I am a senior adjuster at progressive ins and have notice a serious common problem happening with 93 & up jeep grand cherokees with a v8 engine.i'm sure it is due to the harsh environment in the southwest but could very well be possible and just due to age.the problem is that the plastic crossover hose on the fuel rail is rupturing and spraying fuel on the distributor resulting in an immediate engine fire at the rear of engine and can be a serious threat to occupants.i have not been successful in locating any recalls or having chrysler dealers help me in bringing this to chrysler's attention.please assist in bringing some attention to this matter before serious injury results.to date i have had to identical claims within one month-both v8 models 1993 & 1994 with a little over 100k miles well maintained vehicles.

93 jeep grand cherokee car fire (5/7/2001; about 4:15 pm)i have a story to relate; hopefully there might be something to learn from itmy wife and i were traveling to bwi to drop off our son so he could catch a plane back to chicago. A few miles before the i-695 n exit, we started smelling a burnt rubber or perhaps exhaust type of smell. My son was driving and i suggested he get in the outside lane and slow down to see of the smell got worse or went away. All the engine gauges read fine. As we were trying to decide what to do, the car suddenly took a couple of hard jerks and there was a loud bang. The engine was still running, but the car was coming to a quick stop. We were in the outside lane, but right at the i-695 exit so there were 2 more exit lanes on our right. We couldn't get to the shoulder. The car came to stop quickly; it didn't appear to want to coast even when i suggested my son move the transmission lever to neutral. All of a sudden there was a lot of smoke coming out from under the rear of the car. At first i hesitated to get out of the car for fear of being hit by other traffic and we couldn't see toour rear because of the smoke. When i realized there was no traffic coming past us, i got out of the rear seat and looked under the car; there were flames. I yelled at my wife and son to get out of the car and we all went across to the shoulder of the road. The jeep burned totally. . later in speaking to the fire captain, he told us that the rear differential of the car had been cherry red. They had put 700 gallons on the car to put out the fire and cool of the differential. It appears the differential had failed (i believe it was the input bearing where the drive shaft connects), obviously gotten very hot, and locked up causing the drive shaft to break off at the differential (that end of the drive shaft was resting on the ground). When the things started breaking, there must have been some rupture of a fuel line or the fuel tank; then there was fire.*a

I have been having problems ever since i replaced my brakes pads at speed jeep eagle dealer # 718-377-5110. The abs light would come on and when i press the brakes there's no pressure the brake pedal does not spring backup up and the abs lights stays on. The dearler should have known about this defect with the abs system.the dearler has not bee cooperative with me,and would not refund me the money i have spent trying to fix this abs problem.they just want me to spend more money on trying to get it fix.i have aready spend about $1,200. Abs system failure, when stopping at slow speed vehicle will not stop.tt

Abs light stays on, brake pedal kicks back when applying brake, there is a loud noise, andsteering makes noise too. Numerous times to dealer , cannot remedy. Also, vehicle stalls at low speedwhen in reverse.

Anti-lock brake system on five different times (since 1993) failed to work properly. We noticed the problem since we owned the car. We took it to the dealer while it was under warranty but they couldn't find anything wrong.this problem occurs very rarely but it could cause an accident or serious injury. This past december (12/28/98), on a rainy day, i was driving at 30 mile per hour and as i was approaching a stop sign at an intersection i started to brake, i heard the noise of the abs system. When i reached the sign i had my foot all the way down and the car failed to stop. I proceeded against my will and finally the car stopped past the intersection. Fortunately no other car was at the intersection or no people were crossing because i could have caused serious injuries to myself or somebody else. We called the service dept. At the dealer asking if there had been a recall on our brake system or if other owners of '93 jeep grand cherokee complained about their abs brake system but they said no. We didn't take it back to the dealer bacause they failed to find anything wrong the previous times.as a result of that scary event we disabled the abs brake system. I also owned a '95 dodge ram pick-up truck with abs brakes so i'm familiar with this kind of brakes and their operation. The brakes on the grand cherokee behaved erracticly since the beginning. That never happened with the dodge ram. If other jeeps from 1993 have the same problem chrysler should recall the abs brake system and replace them at their expenses and people should be warned of the danger.

Brakes locked up on my wife in heavy traffic (2 police officers witnessed the lock-up since she was blocking traffic).the officers called a wrecker, but she turned the key on and off a few times and the brakes released.we took the vehicle to the local dealer, but they were unable to diagnose the problem.i searched other complaints on nhtsa's website and found several complaints of brake lock-up on this model. I also have investigated an ase website that indicates several people having the same problem.i worry about my wife and 10 month old daughter's safety if there is a problem with the design that makes it prone to lock-up the brakes.i would just ask that it be looked into before someone is hurt.

The parts didn't fail. I notices dents in the slide groves for the front brake pads.was concerned the pads could stick in a heavy breaking situation. Brakes pulsate.

Consumer was applying brakes in traffic, andbrakes were not working. Consumer had to brake again with both feet down onbrakes to stop.consumer hit another car because brakes did not grab in time.

The entire car shakes violently with loud. Horrible vibration sounds when going down my driveway which is on a moderate grade. It is most pronounced the first time i drive the car on a day following a rain fall when my car has been parked in my garage overnight. While attempting to brake,in my driveway, the car sharply swerves to the left.brakes have failed entirely while in 4-wheel drive in snow 2-3 inches deep @ 5-10 mph. Brakes have locked repeatedly after going through a car wash. I have been told repeatedly by the dealer that this is normal for abs and they have given me tips re: putting the car in low gear and using my parking brake when car starts to shake and skid while going down my driveway. A number of times, while raining, when i have put my foot on the brake to stop, on level ground, at 10-15mph, the brakes have grabbed violently. Once,in a shopping center parking lot this caused my son to hit his head on the dashboard while he was fastening his seat belt. I was told by the dealer that i needed to learn to drive differently with abs, that it was a user problem, not a problem with the vehicle. During dry months in california i have no problems with the brakes. I dread the rainy seasons and have even considered selling my house because the jeep service manager said that i wouldn't be having any of these problems if i didn't have a "steep driveway."my kids have been with me a few times when the horrible noise, skidding and shaking have occurred and they were scared to death. My son attempted to jump out of the car once, in the driveway, because he thought we were going to crash. I have saved all of my service records from the dealer but a couple of times they did not enter my brake complaints into the computer, just the normal service i was having done at the time. I have not taken the car in for the brake problem in the last couple of years because the dealer has convinced me that the 1993 gjc has no history of an abs problem, that i am "the problem."

Corrosion of front rotors has caused deep pits.these pits have caused increased stopping distance.there is a current chrysler recall #747 that deals with the pitting, but our vehicle does not meet the exact guidelines.the guidelines are for a recall on all vehicles sold or currently registered in certain states that apply heavy road salt.our vehicle was bought in ia and is now registered in mn.these states are not on the heavy road salt use list.however, we contend that the recall applies to us because this vehicle was registered for over 3 years in il and oh, where the recall does apply.chrysler is declining assistance.we will pursue this issue until chrysler corrects the problem.

When applying brakes, truck pulled to left. After inspecting, one of the front brake rotors was very rusty and other disintegrated. This allowed hub to turn freely.consumer states front rotor rusted from heat and moisture until hub broke out of rotor leaving vehicle without any right front brake, front left rusted through but had not broken loose, consumer states hubs are made from very thin metal and evidently do not withstand heat.

Hub of the brakerotors corroded, causing the hub to separate from the rotors resulting in complete brake failure. Also, vehicle was not included in recall #98v005000.

While applying both feet on the brake pedal in order for the vehicle to stopthe vehicle failed to stop on its own.driver was able to maintain control of the vehicle, and pulled over to the shoulder.driver had the vehicle towed to the dealer, andmechanic determined that the left and right rear rotors needed to be replaced.

#1- concerning rusted rotors.(recall 98v005000/front brake rotors).we purchased this vehicle used 9-16-97.shortly thereafter we discovered that the vehicle had corosion/rusted rotors. We were informed by the service department, that the rusted rotors were not covered by the extended warranty we purchased.that was 4/98.september of 2000 i discovered the recall while doing some research. This time i contacted bobette thomas at jim marsh service about the rusted rotars.she took the information and called me back later that day. I was informed that the recall did not affect my vehicle.we purchased it used and do not know where it originated.we believe the rusted rotars are a product of improper manufacturing processes.i am requesting that jeep repair or replace the defective parts and honor the recall.#2 since purchasing this used vehicle we have had repeated fuel injector problems.we have taken it to be serviced for fuel odors on 8 different occassions in the past 3 years.on three of those occassions we were told nothing was wrong. Yet the smell continued.there is obviously a problem with this vehicle's fuel injector system.again my vehicle is experiencing intermitant fuel odors.it is no longer under warranty and we a failure rate as extensive as ours has been is not acceptable.i believe had the original problemthat is causing this repeated failure, been diagnosed when initially taken to the dealership our warranty would have resolved the issue.i would like this problem addressed in it's entirety.#3 rear hatchback doorlocks and latch.1-12-98 i reported a lock problem and the closure problems i had been having.although i was given a new keyless entry remote.the rear hatch has never closed or locked 100% of the time.i recently discovered this part is also under recall.i would like jeep to repair or replace the parts in question. #4front axle vibration listed on due bill.never corrected.

Problems with steering equipment on 1993 jeep cherokee.*mrthe steering damper has failed on seven different occasions.each time it has happened, the steering wheel shakes uncontrollably and the consumer could barely steer the car off the road to the breakdown lane.

The upper and lower steering shafts separated while the vehicle was parked. This was a problem in chrysler recall #604 (recall 93v210000) where a plastic pin holding the shafts together was sheared in specific jeep models. The plastic pin in my vehicle was not present and there was nothing preventing the upper and lower steering shafts from separating, causing complete loss of control of steering. There could be a fatal accident resulting in this if the shafts separated while driving. The recall should still be pending for all 1993 jeep grand cherokees. It is unreasonable for chrysler to cease this recall, as it is very likely to cause serious injury if would occur.

After driving 125 miles to a sales location, i pulled off of i-85 to make a few cell calls before my meeting.i sat in the car with it idling in a shopping center parking lot making my calls. After about 10 minutes i put the jeep in drive and started rolling through the parking lot. I turned the steering wheel left/right with no response. The front wheels did not respond to the steering wheel at all.had it towed to my mechanic.the 3 bolts holding the steering box to the frame had sheared. Two of three bolt tops were still in the steering box, one had dropped out. The three broken studs were still in the frame with the blue thread locker still in place.no warning, no wandering steering, no pop, no nothing. No service had ever been performed on the steering box.rolled in off i-85 where i was doing 70 mph to this parking lot and that was it.had i waited to get off at the next exit, well, i probably would not be writing this now.

The contact owns a 1993 jeep grand cherokee.the contact stated that the steering suddenly failed in her vehicle while driving away from her residence.the bolt that connects the entire gear box exploded.the vehicle was inspected by a mechanic and the contact was informed that an entirely new gear box and a new steering column were needed.the dealer stated that the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign id number 93v210000 (steering:wheel and handle bar), although the failures were identical.the dealer would not assist.the vehicle will be repaired at the contact's expense.the failure and current mileages were 131,000.

Backing up slowly out of my driveway i heard a loud bang like a bolt breaking. Immediately lost the ability to steer right and somewhat left. While traveling about 15mph on a side roadsteering and brakes lock up.dealership is aware of problem.

Viscous coupling was replaced at 47,000 - 94,000 and now needing replacement at 116,00 miles. This item causes vehicle to have hard steering and even stopping vehicle when turning sharply and slow. Making turns now involve backing up unnecessarily and doing 3 point turns instead or simple turning. A very dangerous situation and costly repairing this failure that was unique to 93 vehicles and corrected the next year. Unfortunally, 1993 owners are left to fare for themselves.

Nhtsa#the molded plastic pin which connects the upper steering column shaft and the lower column shaft may have been sheared prior to installation of the steering column assembly into the vehicle.if this occurred, the upper steering shaft will separate from the lower steering shaft.the consumer has the same problem.however this vehicle was not under recall due tovin.the driver lost control of the vehicle when the steering column failed.it was discovered at the garage that the steering column had come apart and needed to be replaced. *scc

When car drives over a bump or uneven pavement that whole front end of vehicle shakes along with steering column.it takes a few minutes for shaking to stop- braking makes it worse - must slow down to 30 mph.have taken vehicle 4 times to conrad's auto service - first they replaced stabilizer bar, car still shook.then replaced tires-still shook.third visit replaced shocks-still shook. Fourth visit replaced brakes and car still shook. Conrad's checked over entire front end and could not find anything- vehicle is very dangerous to drive on highway-because shaking makes driving uncontrollable.

Jeep dealer said the cause was a "manufacturing defect"and that as such, it was not covered by the extended warrantee at 70,000 miles. Dealer declined to pay for repair, and declined to bill manufacturer for repair. Manufacturer, contacted by owner, did not reply. Vehicle vibratesand bounces from side to side.*skd

I believe that the 1993 jeep grand cherokee has a serious safety defect in the front suspension. When hitting a bump, pothole or other uneven road surface at , say, 45 to 65 mph, the front suspension of the car and the steering column will sometimes go into a violent shake and shimmy that is uncontrollable until you slow the car considerably.this has happened six times since july 28, 2001.it probably occurs when a certain harmonic vibration frequency is developed.i have had the car checked and the stabilizer bar replaced, but the problem persists.i checked the nhtsa complaint file and see that this very same problem has been reported by other drivers.this is a serious safety defect that should be investigated and corrected.while my car is a 1993 model, i am sure that this same suspension was used in cars for some years after 1993.i am interested in possibly buying a new jeep grand cherokee but cannot make that commitment until this matter is corrected and shown to not exist in the new models.

Vehicles suspension not strong enough as indicated to safely tow 5,000 lb trailer, causing vehicle/trailer to loose control/rollover.

When shifting from park to reverse or drive the transmission doesn't always engage. You have to try several times. At 55-60 miles and hour on the freeway, the air conditioner blows warm air. You have to stop the vehicle and let it set before the air conditioner resumes. And the information module shows that the brake lights are out when they aren't. We have had it put on a machine to clear the module and it still flashed an incorrect message. When driving down the highway, and you press the gas to pass a vehicle it doesn't always go into high gear, it drags and you have to let off ot it and keep trying.
