The contact owns a 2008 jeep compass 4x4. When the vehicle was started, the air bag warning indicator was continuously illuminated. The failure recurred each time the vehicle was started. While driving at various speeds, the contact began to hear static coming from the radio that caused the radio to power off. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, but the failure was unable to be determined. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 80,000.
The contact owns a 2008 jeep compass.she stated that the air bag light illuminated intermitently off and onand there was asmell of wire melting.the vehicle was taken to the dealer who advised that the airbag detonator was defective and needed to be replaced.the vehicle had not been repaired.the manufacturer was contacted andadvised the contact that there was no recall for the failure.the failure and current mileages were 72,000.
I bought the vehicle in 5/2014, the following day i noticed odometer jumped up about 300 miles and i live only about 20 miles away from thedealer. I also noticed that tpm light came on and half the radio was lit. I took it back the very next day and said that they would need it to order a new cluster panel and replace the radio. They also claimed they replaced all 4 tire pressure sensors as well as tpm module. They kept the car for about 2 weeks. It worked fine for about 2 days then i started getting even more lights to turn on from the cluster panel. Now i have the 4x4 amber light, trac control, tpm maint, and the abs lights to turn on, i feel i had nothing but problems since day 1. I need help. Total i paid about 13,000 for the car. I need answers. I strongly believe that the main computer is defective. Its not recognizing a chasis ground. It shouldn't take a fatality to get chrysler to look into this. I will never buy another chrysler product again. I feel the chrysler dealer also kept information private to try and make a sale. M going to the local media if this isn't resolved.

Car has ~79,000 miles. It stalls after filling up every time. After about 5-10 mins of keeping the idle up by pushing the gas the problem seems to go away. I've read that this is becoming a common problem with this line of vehicles (including patriot).
I stopped at a stop light, began to accelerate when light turned green and the car started shaking. I pulled into a gas station, at that point my car would no longer move while pressing on the gas pedal. I had to be towed to a local mechanic and was informed my transmission had failed.
The contact owns a 2008 jeep compass. The contact stated that while driving 55 mph the vehicle stalled. Whenever the vehicle stalled, the contact was forced to coast onto the emergency lane and wait a few minutes in order to restart it. The vehicle stalled five times within the last year. When the dealer performed a diagnostic test, there were no error codes displayed. The warranty remained current. The manufacturer was contacted and referred her case to a case manager. The failure mileage was 17,817 and the current mileage was 36,100.

Within 2 minutes after pumping gas car stalls and steering wheel locks and car shuts off. This happens at any situation after pumping whether stationary, in motion, on a city street or a highway, turning. This has happened on multiple occasions.
The gas tank will not take gas.i had the catalyt. Coverter fixed. The valve inside the gas tank does not work properly, and my research online shows this is a common problem with jeep compasses.
Gas tank want take gas when filling tank keep shutting off, i was told by dealer it was a valve in the tank.
Recently my 2008 jeep compass started having trouble with refueling. It would spit fuel back out anytime i tried to fill the tank. The dealer cleaned the check valve in the fuel tank, but it only lasted for one fill up. This is a safety issue! today, fuel came gushing back out and soaked my pants leg and shoes. Chrysler has recalled other jeep models (and other chrysler vehicles) for this problem. However, mine is not being recalled because there have not been enough complaints for my model. Yet i look online and see many complaints of this issue with other jeep compass owners! this is unacceptable!!! chrysler is aware of the faulty fuel tanks and regardless of recall status, they should be replacing fuel tanks for anyone experiencing this problem! my jeep only has 68,000 miles on it. This should not be happening. I had to drive home today in fuel soaked pants and now the interior of my jeep stinks of fuel! there is no telling what could happen with this fuel tank in an accident. When the heat of summer gets here and my fuel tank isn't venting properly it could be an even bigger safety risk! please investigate this issue asap! i can't afford $1,000 to replace a faulty plastic fuel tank!
Every time i fill my car with gas i expect the car to stall and turn off while i'm driving down the road.it's extremely dangerous and it happens every time. This is a known issue which jeep needs to issue a recall for and refuses to. It is extremely dangerous to have people driving on the road whose engines can shut off at any moment causing them to come to a complete standstill even in the middle of the highway.the problem is the vapor/liquid separator valve located at the top of the fuel tank. The valve is designed to prevent liquid fuel from entering the charcoal canister/emissions system. When the valve fails, liquid gas can enter the line and fill the charcoal canister. After refueling the pcm on the vehicle detects a change in fuel level. Then, when the engine meets certain temperature and driving criteria, the pcm issues a purge command to the charcoal canister to remove the stored gas vapors. It's at that point that all the liquid gas in the line gets sucked into the charcoal canister. The pcm expects to see gas vapors entering the intake manifold and it is prepared to adjust air/fuel mixtures to compensate. However, it is not prepared to see liquid gas coming into the intake. That's what causes the engine to stall. Unfortunately, the only fix is to replace the entire gas tank.
When the gas tank is filled/topped off the car randomly stalls while driving.the carsteering locks up and is very dangerous in traffic.it happens until the gas tank is less than full.

While me and fiance drive down the interstate at about 65-70mph on a hot day, the transmission fluid temperature light turns on and we lose almost all power and cant get it to go. We had it looked at by a dealership and they replaced the trans cooler, trans lines, and trans fluid. But the issue is still happening. It is almost getting to the point of whether we should even try to get it fixed or what we need to do to fix it. When the problem first occurred we had only had the car for two weeks.

On freeway, suddenly felt no power.car lost power and would not go over 20 mph.got off freeway, put car into park, would not go in reverse, started up again, same problem. Rpms go up, but no momentum to car even with foot on floor on gas pedal.after car was turned off and key was taken out, it started up like nothing was wrong. Car repair could find nothing wrong. Has happened about half a dozen times since then, as long as key is taken out, it will work fine. Until this last time, last week.car died again on freeway, going from 70 mph to 20 mph quickly. Limped it to car shop, who finally was able to diagnose the electronic control module - for an almost $800 repair. Called and complained to chrysler who said because i was the second owner and it had too many miles on it and was out of warranty and not in the recall....that there was nothing they could do!will fix and sell - along with my other two jeeps - wrangler and cherokee sport, which i told chrysler as well.
The contact owns a 2008 jeep compass. The contact stated that on any incline in the drive position when she took her foot off of the brake pedal the vehicle rolled backwards instead of forward or remaining steady. The vehicle was taken to the dealer. They failure was not diagnosed but the owner told her that they reprogrammed "it" but did not identify what component was reprogrammed. The failure and current mileages were approximately 13,000.

The contact owns a 2008 jeep compass 4x4. While driving approximately 10 mph, the contact applied pressure to the brake pedal but the brakes would not respond. The contact stated the failure occurred three times. The contact stated there wasapproximately an inch of snow on the ground when the failure occurred the first time and she had activated her four wheel drive. The failure only occurred when there was snow on the ground. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the technicians checked the codes but were unable to diagnose the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 22,000.
The contact owns a 2008 jeep compass sport 4x4. The contact stated that when attempting to decelerate in snowy weather, the brakes would not function properly and would exhibit an abnormal noise. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection but the technician was unable to diagnose the failure. The failure recurred and the dealer advised that the rear lower ball joints, which were fractured and causing the tires to wear prematurely, would need replacing. The manufacturer was contacted and offered no assistance. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 20,000.updated 03/24/11*ljthe consumer was informed both lower ball joints were bad. Updated 04/29/11
The crossmember (subframe) is rotting away and when this part fails a serious crash may result. Jeep issued a bulletin (23-012-14) for 2007 compass for this same problem authorizing an extension to warranty for 10 years and if found to repair without cost to owner.just call jeep about my 2008 compass and they told me since original factory warranty has experied i would be 100% responsible for repair cost. First off, the crossmember should not rot away after onlky 8 yrs, second since they acknowledge 2007 had a problem , my 2008 should be included. Most importantly, since the failure of this part could result in lack of control and may cause a crash resulting in injury or death there should be a recall for all jeeps to inspectand replace any parts showing severe rust and rotting.
The steering began to pull sharply to the side. When the jeep was taken to the shop, the mechanic was able to get the part immediately from the dealer because the part was kept in stock because it is so often replaced. The mechanic said that lower ball joints typically last at least twice as long as these and that continued driving without replacement could have resulted in losing complete steering control. He said he believed the lower ball joints to have a serious design flaw. Upon researching online, i found that many other owners had the same problem, having to replace their lower ball joints with even fewer miles and more frequently. This could easily result in an accident. There should at least be a safety notification sent out to alert other drivers of the danger caused by this design flaw. When i wrote to chrysler, i received a letter asking me to call to discuss the matter. When i called the customer service representative was unwilling to admit to a fault in the product.
The clock spring was going in the steering column. It started as a clicking noise when i turned the wheel. I was told it was the axle shaft and replaced it and still had the same noise. I took it to a garage and they found the clock spring was bad. He said that when these go your steering wheel will lock up. Also, upon calling jeep for the part he found that this is a common problem.
I bought my compass new in june, 2008. I complained about a cracking noise coming from the right front end the 2nd day i had the car. I brought it back to the dealer & they replaced the r/f axle. It still made the same cracking noise. I took it back & the dealer said the bolts on the control arm weren't tightened properly. Still the same noise, so i went on line looking for any tsbs. I read about front end problems with 2007 dodge calibers & 2007 jeep compasses & patriots particularly with the ball joints.turns out that undersized bolts were installed in the control arms.by now i felt that the car was not safe to drive & when i took it back to the dealer & the service tech said let's take a test drive, i refused & told him to drive it himself, as i wasn't going to get back behind the wheeluntil they solved the problem (reminding them of the lemon law, as this was the 3rd time i was there for the same problem). While thedealer insisted that my car was not one of the cars listed in the tsb, they did replace the control arm bolts with new ones & replaced the stabilizer links. In feb. Of 2009 my dad purchased a 2008 compass & it had the same noise. I took it to the dealer & they replaced the control arm bolts. Since then there have been no problems or noises, although my jeep only has 17k miles. Do your homework & check out tsbs. You just might solve your own problem.
Left front tie rod failed while turning out of a driveway.
The vehicle was bought brand new in 2010. Went to the dealership to get one of the tires replaced. The automotive mechanics found multiple problems in the control arm and the ball joint of the wheel. The mechanic told me that the problem is very common to jeep compass. I just want to file a complaint because the problem is not suppose to occur unless the vehicle is driven all the time or always driven to very far destinations. In this case, it is not. I understand that this type of problem might be cause by something else, like bumps on the road, or a heavy object hit on the road. I do not recall any incidents with my jeep compass that could cause this problem. The vehicle was brand new and not suppose to have that kind of problem that could potentially harm my family and myself.
Front sub frame rusted out.
39000 miles and so many suspension problems control arms, ball joints, tie rods, struts hopingmy family doesn't die in this vehicle what i see in the news about chrysler lately scares the hell out of me trying to keep this vehicle off freeway don't know where to turn chrysler says there is no problem but going on line there are so many others having the same experience with their jeeps i don't believe what they say they tell me it's 4000 mi over warranty nothing can be done i'm afraid the wheels will fall off what the $#%^ can i do i don't have the l money to buy a new car or keep fixing this one i think it's a faulty design and so do numerous mechanics in the usa and canada something's messed up when parts prematurely go bad and if you look into it i'm sure you will see a pattern i babied this car since new hoping it would last twenty years don't know if any one has died but i think to myself its probable being so many complaints i have read any kind of help available this is my forth jeep and i never have seen anything like this with the ten or so cars i have owned hope you can help! before something bad happens where can i turn driving this is frightening and i couldn't sell this to another family after what my mechanic has told me about these kind of jeeps please help! what would you do what should i do thanks
Our 2008 jeep compass has ball joint and tie rod end failure.
The contact owns a 2008 jeep compass. When attempting to start the vehicle it stalled and a red symbol would illuminate on the instrument panel. A red light bulb also illuminated on the left hand corner of the instrument panel.in addition, when the vehicle was in motion, he would experience a loss of power steering. The contact was unable to restart the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where they performed a diagnostic test which concluded that the control module needed to be reprogrammed. He performed the repairs on the vehicle; however, approximately two days later, the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken to a second dealer who awaited inspection. The manufacturer was aware of the issue and filed a complaint on the contacts behalf. The current and failure mileage was 53,000.
My 2008 jeep compass, with approximately 32,000 miles, required the lower ball joints to both be replaced or risk a serious potential safety hazard. These parts should have lasted at least twice as long as they actually did and the technician at the jeep dealership i spoke with said this is a recurring problem on this model of jeep with this specific part. We took the vehicle in to have it inspected because it was riding rough. If we had not taken this vehicle to the dealership for inspection at the time we did then there was a strong possibility that the parts failure (lower ball joints) could have caused a catastrophic failure of the front end resulting in the wheel and tire separating from the vehicle. This is a definite safety concern for any family who owns this model of jeep. We have written a letter directly to chrysler customer care describing the problem and telling them of our dissatisfaction with the part both needing replaced well before this part should normally be due for inspection. We feel this is a serious safety concern and should be considered for a parts recall by chrysler. We solely wish to forward on our safety concern to your organization for further review. We suspect that this issue might be a trend and we want to make sure our concern is voiced; mainly in order to prevent a future incident in which a family is driving down the road and their wheel separates from the vehicle causing a serious collision or possibly a death. Thank you for your consideration.
My compass creaks and rattles loudly over bumps. Took it to a garage and they notified me that the subframes were rotted requiring replacement of the subframes, but also replacement of the control arms, links, as well as the need for an alignment.this car is only 7 years old and should not have this problem.i have seen the recall for the same problem with the 2007 compass and have seen many instances for the 2008 jeep compass on safercar.gov and elsewhere on the internet. It is clear that the issue that plagued the 2007 model year is the same with the 2008's. I would like to know if the 2008 jeep compass subframe is the same component used in the 2007 model. If yes, i can't understand why they would not have also recalled the 2008 models.

Severe noise and frame rusted out!
The rear end was making a clunking noise. Took it into a mechanic who informed me the rear frame was rusted through and was close to breaking. He had to secure the rear end to the frame with ratchet straps to allow me to drive it to a mechanic who could fix it. Only one bolt secured the rear end to the frame it was so damaged. Had it broken off while i was driving, i probably would have been severely injured if not killed.
The contact owns a 2008 jeep compass 4x4. The contact stated that while having the vehicle serviced for an oil change, it was discovered that the front sub frame was partially rotted. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the entire front sub frame needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 128,000.
The contact owns a 2008 jeep compass 4x4. When the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for a wheel alignment, the technician discovered that the frame of the vehicle was completely rusted. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer for diagnostic testing or repairs. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.
The contact owns a 2008 jeep compass 4x4. The contact stated that while having the vehicle serviced by an authorized dealer for routine maintenance, she was informed that the lower control arm on the driver's side needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 18,970.
I purchased my car new in 2007 with 98 miles on it. In 2011, with nearly 40,000 miles, both my front control arms needed replaced. I have since needed them (along with the tires) replaced at least 5 times. Granted, i now have over 140k miles on my car, but this is not something that should happen on a regular basis. I've had at least 3 mechanics tell me they have had numerous repairs made on other compass vehicles and to "hold on to my receipts" if there is a recall.

The gas tank will not take gas.i had the catalyt. Coverter fixed. The valve inside the gas tank does not work properly, and my research online shows this is a common problem with jeep compasses.
The rear crossmember/kframe is completly rotted thru. Almost all of the suspension parts are very rusty and needs replaced. I did not find out it was this bad until i heard a thumping sound coming from the rear of the vechicle. Did research on the internet and discovered that this is a common and major problem.i was driving at highway speed when the thumping began. This is one of my family cars and i am scared to death to drive. I am parking it until i can get it fixed. I contacted chrysler about the problem and they blew me off. They said that the extended warranty only covers 2007 models but this is a problem up to 2009.

Was under our 2008 compass while changing the serpentine belt and notice severe rust rot on the subframe. Can actually push my fingers through it. I see that the 2005 through 2007 models have a recall on the subframe but not the 2008 model even though they have the same problems.

Received the february 15, 2017 letter about the warranty extended to 10 years/ unlimited miles on the front and rear crossmembers. At the time of the letter the condition mentioned had not been experienced. The condition did present itself and the vehicle was taken in for inspection. Both the front and rear were recommended be replaced however was informed the warranty period is from the build date which was in october 2007 therefor missing the warranty period by a month. If the letter stated the date of manufacture an inspection could have been scheduled before it expired.

I was putting a set of rear brake pads on the vechicle when i noticed that the rear crossmember is rotted out. I did some research and found out this is a known problem with these vechicle. Chrysler has to promised to fix the 2007 models, when the 2007, 2008, and 2009 all suffer from the same problem. I have to pay$1500.00 out of my pocket for an 8 year old vechicle that should not be this rusted out.

Ball joints needed to be replaced.... I purchased 4 brand new tires around the end of 2012. The front two tires were so bad due to the ball joint/bearings i had to purchase two new front tires in april 2014. That's when i actually noticed it. I'm sure they needed replacement sooner than that.i was toldboth ball bearings and something called a hub barring to both the left and right wheel were so bad they were surprised i made it this long without the wheel locking up on me. I'm $1800.00 in the hole due the this problem. I'm now seeing this is a serious problem with jeep compass. They need to do something to accommodate all of their customers for this ongoing problem. I want some answers!!!
Our 2008 jeep compass has ball joint and tie rod end failure.
Ball joint on the 2008 jeep compass is has gone bad after just 50,000 miles.over 1/2 " of play in the joint that could cause separation of the wheel from the vehicle causing a driver to lose control of the vehicle.
Ball joints went bad at 44000 miles!
After driving 311 miles form ocean city md, we stopped for a rest at 179 n plaza access rd, somerset, pa 15501.after an estimated 30 minute break, we returned to the jeep filled with smoke.upon getting my family to safety, clearing the driver's around the jeep, calling 9-11, and pulling our luggage out of the jeep, i determined the rear carpet under neath the rear compartment was on fire.i removed it and extinguished it.what was found at my local garage was a corroded hole on top of the muffler (which can only be diagnosed by reaching in and over the muffler) was venting exhaust and was so hot it caused the rear frame to reach a temperature that ignited the carpet around the spare tire.there are visible burn marks in the rear as well.thankfully this did not heat the gas tank to the point of ignition.my jeep does not have a heat shield between the frame and the muffler.my insurance company will not repair the muffler as they say it a defect from the manufacture.i am concerned for other jeep compass owners or jeeps in general that have no heat shield and could have this type of corrosion.
Severe noise and frame rusted out!
