One day, it just stopped working in the middle of the street, on my way from work. This incident occurred twice. I only had the car for a year and couldn't understand why this happened. I called jeep customer service who explained that it may have been an issue with the key. The next day, my vehicle completely stopped working. I had it towed and taken to the dealership where it was diagnosed to have an issue with the tipm. I had to pay money i shouldn'thave had to spend to get it fixed. I later discovered so many other complaints about this issue. There's a very recent, august 2014, lawsuit pending in federal court relating to this issue.

The electrical system in 2001 jeep cherokees are awful it starts out as the gauges, then the dome light, then to everything else could be a fire hazard.

I bought my 2001 jeep cherokee sport last year feb 2012 and multiple issues have been occurring. 3 months into ownership the electrical and fuel systems either stopped working or gave me constant issues (all parts factory). Now im bringing my car back into the shop because the windows wont roll down (again), the evap solenoid is leaking and misfires. The carfax is clean with no accidents and i baby this car. Jeeps are cheaply made and not meant to last past 100,000 even after services.

The engine has 150,00 miles.it is losing coolant with no puddles to show for it.the oil pressure gauge shows 0 at idle.the engine constantly overheats.no sign of head gasket leak.coolant overflow tank fills with coolant/oil/rust mixture after running the engine for 5 minutes.door locks don't work sometimes.tail lights work on and off while the lights are off.all problems started within the last year.

Instrument cluster fails which in turn deactivates air bags.

Horn failure.this is not the first occasion of this event. The interstate traffic was at stopped due to a wreck and a semi truck attempted to make a lane change. I attempted to signal that the lane was occupied by blowing the car horn and after pressing on the horn logo in the center of the steering wheel nothing happened. I tried multiple times and still nothing. Luckily the driver of the semi finally looked and stopped before pushing my car into the center concrete divider. It is a very frustrating feeling to see an impending cash and to have no means to alert other drivers.

While turning a cornerthe steering wheel locks up and the engine stalls, jeep replaced distributer.nlm

The vehicle with 10529 miles lost all power during highway driving at about 55 mph.the engine warning light came on.after about 15 minutes, i started the car and drove about one half mile before it lost all power again and the warning light came on again.the car was towed.after considerable time in the dealer's shop during which the problems were apparently difficult enough to warrant consultation with the manufacturer, the drive oil pump, the main computer (module powertra.), camshaft sensor, and crankshaft sensor were replaced.at 10747 miles, the engine warning light came on again.the car was again towed to the garage although it had been running for about 3/4 mile after the light came on.the diagnosis was that the #4 cylinder was misfiring. The synchronization was reset without any parts replacement.

Complaint received via e-mail. I have had a consistent problem with my brakes since i brought it.the first failure occurred at 9012 miles.dealership replaced the front calipers and rotors. Then at 18811 miles dealership resurfaced the front and rear rotors because they were warped. At 24,806 miles the failure recurred. Dealership replaced all 4 brake rotors.currently,at 32,000 miles the failurerecurred, but the vehicle was out of warranty. The manufacturer, dealership, and other jeep owners informed me that this was a design flaw that occurred in the earlier and some later model jeeps, but has been modified in 2005 model.the consumer stated that the vehicle was taken in for repair three times while under warranty.the engine light was on for one week.the low coolant light comes on when the vehicle is started (cold) and goes off when the vehicle is warm.*tc

As i was driving my 2001 jeep cherokee sport down the interstate at 72 mph the vehicles began to shake violently "the death wobble".what had happened is i hit a smallbump in the road causing the vibration.the only way to stop it was to finish passing the semi and pull over on the shoulder and stop( with out getting killed or killing anyone else.)this has happened 3 times over the course of a year.the first time i was told it was my tires.i changed them with goodyear (like the factory had).the second time it happened they told me it was the sway bar.this still did not correct the problem.on the third timethey told me it was my control arms.the control arms were replaced and i still notice a small vibration but it has not had the ("death wobble yet").i am writing this complaint to officially inform the public of this problem.i want to ensure that i am the only one with this problem.thanks

As with many other jeep owners with the 4.0 engine (hundreds that i have seen) my 2001 jeep cherokee's cylinder head cracked. Mine was at 117k miles, and the average mileage for failure seems to be 100k - 120k miles. This is a definite design flaw. My jeep was well maintained and should not have had a cracked cylinder head. I ask nhtsa to contact current owners of jeep 4.0 engines to really see how often this fault occurs. Chrysler seems to take no responsibility for this, which is why i am asking the nhtsa to investigate.

Car will not start on the first try, and when i did get it running the check engine light was on. Took it to a mechanic when we started the car the engine light was out and when he put the tester on it pulled no codes and no monitors.said they had all been erased.i have had the car stall on my when sitting still, the chime works intermittently when you put the key in the ignition, the head lights will sometime stay on and sometimes turn off rightaway when you shut the car off.

Slowly loosing antifreeze, antifreeze mixed with oil.found to be cracked head, apparently a common issue with this vehicle. Replaced head.a few months after replacement of head, started to loose antifreeze again replaced head again in nov 2014. Had vehicle back for one week, lost all antifreeze, mixed with oil again. Have been told that 2000 and 2001 jeep cherokees and grand cherokees have a very high rate of this happening.there should be a recall.

After loosing coolant at about a 1/2 per week, finally decided to pull the head and check to see if it has the famous jeep 4.0l, 0331 head casting and is known to be weak. Yep, i have the bad head with cracks. There should be a recall for this as it has a high failure rate.....

Started noticing loss of oil pressure and then coolant. The engine continues to run fine but has gotten to the point that its losing 1 gallon of anti. Every two weeks or so. When i started to look around on line and other places, (junk yards) everyone i talked to says they have had the same problem with their jeeps. Why if d.c. Produced these faulty heads on their jeeps didn't they recall them to fix?

In the 2000 and 2001 cherokees with the 4.0 engine head casting 0331 chrysler knew about the cylinder heads cracking. In 2002 they contracted with tupy manufacturing in brazil to remake the head casting that ran until the 4.0 was stopped being used by them. Mine has since cracked and chrysler says that no factory recall was done and such i'm stuck with a cracked head that they knew was faulty.

The contact owns a 2001 jeep cherokee. When the vehicle was powered off and restarted within five minutes or longer, the vehicle would hesitate to start or have a rough start and the check engine warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the third cylinder failed. The vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 02v104000 (fuel system, gasoline). The vehicle wasnot repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 155,000.

Head liner has fallen and now it is breaking apart and particles are flying all over the inside of my jeep and i am on oxygen and need to open my windows because the air only works some times and when i use it the car temp get very high and the engine light comes on i have had the radiator flushed twice even replaced the radiator at one point also changed the thermostat i love my jeep but i hate to say it if i have to replace it i doubt if i will buy jeep or dodge again.

Dealer refusingto honor recall because consumer did not buy vehicle from them. Please provide further information.

Dt*:the contact stated while driving at various speeds the vehicle stalled without warning.also, the low beam stopped working.both problems occurred intermittently.the vehicle was taken to the dealer who could not duplicate either problem.

- the contact stated that the week of 1/1/07 the driver went to start a 2001 jeep cherokee sport when a loud noise was heard and vibrations felt.the contact took vehicle to dealership because the vehicle could not be driven.the dealership's service department informed her that the cam shaft was malfunctioning.the contact stated that the cam shaft was replaced and the contact does have the damaged parts.the dealership did inform the contact that this was not an isolated problem.

My daughter called because of a noise in the engine compartment. I went to her work, raised the hood, started the engine, and shortly 1-2 minutes thereafter, a loud popping/grinding occurred. The fan disintegrated sending parts through the radiator, shroud, and toes of my left shoe. And injury could have occurred but did not. I found 1999-2004 jeeps had a recall for this very type of event. However, it missed he vin. I believe all of these vehicles should be included in the recall. My youngest son has a 1999 that the fan came apart damaging the radiator and resulting in engine failure. I have owner 7 jeeps but never seen this before.any assistance in alerting the public will be appreciated.

After driving my vehicle for approx 20 minutes i notice smoke coming from the front of the hood. I opened the hood and found that the hose leading from the engine was very. My temperature gauges all registered normal so i added some engine coolant and did not drive the vehicle until the next am. After a 3 mile drive to work same situation again. I took the car to my mechanic and was told the radiator had rotted and need to be replaced. Odd since there was no indication prior to the smoke.

On freeway, oil pump of my 2001 jeep cherokee failed, drive shaft to oil pump stripped, at only 45,000 miles. All parts needed to be replaced, at a cost of $1000.

First, engine began to loose overheat and loose coolant at 55,000m - 1 qt every 200 - 300 miles.no leak found by mechanic.loss continued.then loss of oil pressure when engine was warmed fully.pressure drops at all rpm but down to 0 when idle is below 1300 rpm( (at idle).cannot find leak but have been advised on several forums that this year (98 - 01) jeep 4.0 engines have a very high failure rate related tothis problem.the problem appears to be a faulty engine casting prone to internal cracking, causing coolant loss and loss of oil pressure.jeep dealer denies and knowledge of this issue.but, jeep sent a special letter to buyers of this year/model jeep cherokee that they were desperate to buy as many of this year make/model as they could and would provide a reasonable trade-in value.they did not specify why they would need to acquire so many of this particular used year/model jeep cherokees.

Consumer states front rotors continue to warp after (2) replacements. When ever the truck hits a bump while traveling 50 mph or above will shake violently.owner is concerned about controlling the truck when this happens.also the upper and lower ball joint was loose which was causing the steering wheel to shake, the transfer case was loose, the gasket and thermostat was replaced due to a coolant leak, cruise control was inoperative, the air condition and heater only blows at defrost vents, the rear luggage rail came out.

2001 jeep cherokee front brake rotors corroded. *mr the rotors also flaked creating a hazardous condition.the dealer was aware of this prior to the end of the warranty period, but did not correct this defect.the consumer also experienced standing water in the foot wells, a/c failure, fan failure and the doors not beingaligned properly.there is a brake recall for this vehicle, but the recall number was not given. *sc

I purchased a new 2001 chrysler cherokee jeep. (4.0 liter in line 6 cylinder.) approx. 2 years after purchase date (50,000 miles driven), the car was out of warranty and i was informed by a registered chrysler dealer that the car needed a new engine.the expense to perform the diagnostic work and install replacement engine and related parts amounted to $4,500.i was a diligent car owner with a very small income, a single parent who has to work, and a 5 year car-payment plan -- in essence, i changed the oil, took the car for any service or repair needed.i gather from calls to chrsyler and my jeep dealership that i just got a "bad" engine and because it's out of the 2-year warranty there is no course open to me to be reimbursed for the repairs done.obviously, since i still have 3 years left on my car payments i could not just walk away and leave the car. I need help.please advise what i can do. Thank you in advance for your time.best regards, genevieve glasson.

The synchronization was reset without any parts replacement.

Consumer states that while driving at any speed the engine light comes on and will stay on the remainder of the time the vehicle is in movement. Dealer notifiedts

1. Vehicle was losing coolant but nothing showing up in the engine oil coolant or burning out the tail pipe. I was going through about a half gallon per week. Vehicle maintained loss of coolant for about 6 months, the added problem of lost oil pressure then became a problem. 2.eventually the head started leaking bad enough that coolant was present in the oil, at which point the problem was present and able to diagnose.3. At that point the main bearings were a complete loss and determined that the cam bearings were gone as well and had to replace the entire motor.

The contact owns a 2001 jeep cherokee.the vehicle was purchased during the winter and the contact did not notice any failures at the time.once the summer began, he noticed that the air conditioning was not producing cold air.during that same summer, he took the vehicle to the dealer for a diagnostic.they found no failures or leaks, but added fluid to the air conditioning system.this repaired the failure for the remainder of the summer.the following year, the failure recurred.a private mechanic was unable to find any failure and added liquid to the air conditioning system again.this remedy lasted towards the end of the summer; however, the failure recurred and progressively worsened the following year.the fluid added to the air conditioning system only remedied the failure for no more than four weeks.the contact could no longer afford to keep going back to the mechanic.he took the vehicle back to the shop that repairs air conditioning in vehicles and the mechanic stated that there was a leak in the evaporation in the air conditioning evaporator.the technician stated that the failure should be under warranty and referred the contact back to the dealer.the vehicle failed inspection and was taken back to the dealer for repair.the dealer stated that the leak from the evaporation in the air conditioning evaporator was not the cause of the failure.the contact believes that there should be a way to determine the cause of the failure and provide a solution.the failure mileage was 2,000 and current mileage was 53,000.

Owners manual stipulates that "end caps should not be used as hold downs.tie down holes are provided at the front and rear ends of the slide rails."the tie down holds are not usable because the holes do not go all the way through slide rails.

It is not possible to secure loads to the roof rack, the tie-down holes are not drilled all the way through the slide rails, it is too short, and the crossbars cover the tie down holes when spread to the last position at each end, consumer states his previous 1993 cherokee had tie down holes that were drilled all the way through the slide rails where he was able to properly secure loads with no problem.

2001 jeep cherokee rear brake and turn signal lights repeatedly burn out.

I have two jeep grand cherokees and have had nothing but problems with both involving the rear tail/brake lights. I have replaced the bulbs on and off for the last 10 years and last year i replace the entire light housing.i am experiencing this with both vehicles and have notice many other jeeps on the road with their tail light or brake lights not properly working. This is an ongoing problem. The tail lights work sometimes but the brake lights may not work at all, very frustrating.when there have been times when the tail lights will work and the brake light will not, both using the same bulb.this is a very dangerous situation when applying the breaks and having the lights on the rear of my vehicle not indicate that i am stopping or in fact making my vehicle less noticeable.i have heard there are numerous complaints for this same problem.i am having the same problem with both vehicles - not a coincident but a manufactures defeat.

No incident yet, just wanting to know when i will receive my recall letter to take to a dealership to get the frame mount hitch to protect my family and gas tank from a rear end crash?

The contact owns a 2001 jeep cherokee. The contact stated while driving 10 mph, the vehicle lost motive power without warning and there was smoke coming from the engine. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic and diagnosed that the top cylinder was faulty. The vehicle was then towed to a dealer, but the dealer informed the contact that they did not repair vehicles older than 2006 and would only order a part to cover the manifold. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The vin was included in nhtsa campaign number: 02v104000 (fuel system, gasoline). The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was opened. The manufacturer informed the contact to take the vehicle to a dealer for diagnosis. The failure mileage was 145,333.

When vehicle is started you can smell gas fumes, within minutes the check engine light comes on.vehicle is taken into dealer.dealer tests it and says it a leak.they can't find it and they reset the light.within 2 weeks the same thing happen.they replaced the gas cap a few times and changed a gasket above the fuel tank.this made no difference.just recently the vehicle has been into the dealer twice in a month. The dealer suggested trading in the vehicle and changed the gas cap again. The last time the vehicle was in they suggested a tune up, which is normally done within suggested times anyways, but did it and charged us for it.again same thing happened. Vehicle was taken to near by service department to be tested.results (large leak)..the problem has been ongoing , nothing is being done to solve it.

Purchased jeep cherokee 4wd 2001 new drove off dealership lot and noticed vibration and wheel shook slightly, technician said this was due to the newness of the tires and that i was not used to driving an suv and it was a "sportier and rougher ride".vibrations increased as time went on. Then steering started to pull to one side. I met with a mechanic (not at the dealership-wanted outside opinion). Mechanic stated front tires needed replaced as they were bubbled on inside , needed new ceramix front brake pads ,new machine rotors, and front end alignment and my right rear rim is bent and left camber is out and their are no kits available at this time to repair my jeep. I paid $846.43 and when i drove home the jeep still vibrates and pulls.i hear a noise when i am driving that sounds like the tires or rims are rubbing. I don't blame my mechanic, he did a fine job however i feel that i got stuck with a lemon and was shocked to see 113 consumer complaints on your site that were all very similar to my own. I think this should be looked into further by someone who has more expertise than myself in this area. I have an appointment with service technician next week to check manifold due to engine fires recall notice i received-one more thing to add to my list of worries for myself and my families safety while driving this lemon.

Jeep purchased 7/19/02.when transmission shifts the second shift, the shift is very ruff and you here a clunk. This does not happen on a consistant basis. Jeep was taken into the shop on 7/26/02a code "65" for transmission and accused me of driving vehicle harshly. While driving during the weekend jeep cont to shift the same way. Took jeep back in on 7/29/02 and got jeep back on7/30/02 stating there was nothing wrong with it. That evening i had the tranny shift harshly 2 x. Jeep is still under warranty and since i am a woman i think they don't believe me. Any help or info would be greatly appreciated.

This jeep has had problems since i first bought it.i questioned the dealer about these problems as they arose.i was made to feel that "all these things" are perfectly natural.this jeep cannot even back up my driveway without squealing, tires and smoking the tires, no matter how slowly i try to go up it. I do not feel safe in this vehicle and would like jeep chrysler to take this vehicle back.i cannot put into 2000 characters all the problems i have had with this vehicle.i have an 11 year old child and thought i was buying reliable transportation.i am very disappointed in the reliablility and the handling of this vehicle.i am afraid to take it on a trip for fear it will quit on me again and strand me in an unsafe place.i have never owned a new vehicle like this before that put the fear of the devil in me like this jeep does.we live in the northeast and should never have to be stranded or put on hold with chrysler emergency roadside assistance for 29 minutes.it took me 31/2 hours to warm up.i had severe frostbite due to the mechanical failure i had to endure.

I own a 2001 jeep cherokee sport. I have had several issues such as brakes/rotors that i have taken care of without complaint. However my jeep was just diagnosed with a front differential failure and needs a complete overhaul. My car has only 60,000 miles on it and i have had the front and rear differentials serviced twice each according to the specs in my owner's manual. I've been told by private mecanics as well as jeep technicians that this should not have occured. Chrysler told me after i had it diagnosed by my personal mechanic to have it checked by my dealership. If the dealership came to the same conclusion i was assured that my warranty would be extended to cover the repair. Now chrysler is refusing the repair and will not return my calls. I have been given at least false information and have most likely been lied to. I've already paid almost $200 for the diagnostics and now am being quoted another $925 for the repair by the dealer. I still have over a year left on the note for this vehicle and am appalled that i am already paying to have a major drivetrain component rebuilt. Chrysler has done nothing to remedy this.

Consumer complained about aboutrear differential.consumertook vehicle to dealer for servicing on 4 occasions, and it was making a grinding noise8 months later. Warranty expired, and consumerwas asked to pay $500.00 for repairs.consumer wastold that there was metal in the bottom ofdifferential.

Consumer was complaining about adifferential problem.the bearings were grinding. Consumer tookvehicle to the dealer on 4 different occasions, but problem recurred.

The stock seat belts located in the rear seat of the vehicle do not lock in order to properly and safely install child safety seats. Safety belt retractors do not function consistently, belts hang in door opening and become caught in the latch/strike assembly when the doors are closed.this causes damage to the belt, requiring replacement.i have owned several chrysler products (dodge dart, plymouth reliant, 2 cherokees and other) and all have exhibited this problem.

The seat belts did not fail, but the belt would catch on the door latch and was rubbing holes into the belt.jeep was contacted about this problem on 2/14/01, they called and said that it was a "design flaw"but until more complaints were received, they would do nothing about it.demontrond was also advised about the problem, but i was told that for them to look at it, it would cost me for them to look at it.the jeep has been "traded.

Jeep caught fire while parked in work parking lot and it was due to faulty seat heaters.

Mounting bracket on the 2001 jeep cherokee driver seat has broken, causing the seat to lean back and to the right.

Bolts on mounting of seat frame broke through the mount when driving.almost wrecked when seat came loose and wobbled!!!

I own a 2001 jeep cherokee. The metal that attaches the seat to the front driver seat mounting has failed in multiple areas leaning the seat back and to the right. The seat is held by one bolt, while the metal is tearing on the others due to the tension.the two drivers are both fit, under 200lbs with good posture - this is clearly a structural defect.the seat angle now causes the driver back and hip pain and in an accident would pose an extreme danger to all passengers. Replacement driver seat is over twice the cost of matching passenger seat indicating that the manufacturer is taking advantage of their defect.

Front seat on my jeep the frame of the seat broke.

Front driver seat broke loose from floor i went to junk yard and bought another seat cost at the time was 75 dollars and then in 2011 the seat broke loose again i have not fixed it as of this date.

Driver side front seat frame broke on 2001 jeep cherokee causing seat back to recline on one side towards the rear. I own two identical jeep cherokees and ithappened to both of them. There are many complaints about this on the internet. I called the dealer and was told there weren't any recalls on this. I think this is dangerous and could very likely cause the driver to lose control of the vehicle and cause a serious accident. Please review and advise. Thank you.

When drivingconsumer noticed thatdriver's side seatbroke off the track. Consumer took the vehicle to the dealership for repairs. The consumer had to pay for the replacement of the seat track because the vehicle was no longer under warranty.

The contact owns a 2001 jeep cherokee. While drivingapproximately 55 mph the contact stated the seat began to wobble and would not stay in place. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. The technicians stated the seat needed to be replaced but the part was no longer available. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 144,000.

Driver seat broke at the track connection on the front left corner. Results in an abnormal driving posture as the seat is permanently semi-reclined. Very difficult to replace as this appears to be a common failure and replacement parts are insufficient.

2001 jeep cherokee limited:drivers seat bracket broke for no apparent reason, seat is now unstable/wobbly. Had this occurred while on the freeway it could have led to a serious crash. While researching a fix for the problem i discovered that this is a common issue. Jeep should recall these vehicles and fix this serious safety problem. Driver's seat lh seat base frame cracked through and broken. Drivers seat became a "rocking chair" with potential to lose control of vehicle.

Had problems w/ front end shaking violently when i hit a bump, changed lanes or put on the brakes at freeway speeds.thought it was a brakes or alignment problem, but after having brakes replaced and the alignment checked, i resorted to going to the jeep dealership.after dealer replicated the symptoms, informed me of a technical service bulletin from last year and then replaced the entire suspension system under warranty.(note: the car had 18,000 miles on it at the time.)the symptoms are returning less than a year later.this should be covered under a recall.

Consumerwas having brake problems. Also s while driving stepped onthe brakes and they did no work. Dealer was contacted and stated that the brakes got too hot and that they could'n do any thing about it.

I usually drive back roads under 50 miles per hour. My husband had taken my 2001 jeep cherokee sport on the interstate and a car switched lanes infront of us causing him to have to brake quickly. The front of my car shook so hard we almost went into a jersey wall. Until that vehicle was under 40 miles per hour the front end was shaking so violently it was barely controlable. If i would have been driving it may very well have caused a serious accident. The problem with my vehicle was covered under service bulletin 0500401. What we experienced was not minor pulsation. The front rotor was visibly warped! when i called jeep customer service about the problem they admitted that they were aware that the front rotors would warp under conditions of high heat or high road salt use. This was not a recall nor did they offer to meet part of the cost of repair ($700). But the composite of the brake rotor has since been changed so that this problem no longer happens. We were lucky to not have a vehicle in the lane next to us and we were lucky not to have hit the jersey wall. I wanted to make you aware of this because the next person may not be so lucky.

This is a serious problem that jeep knows about, but i don't think they know how to fix it.it's commonly referred to as the "death wobble" -- and i gather that it might be more common amongst jeeps that are lifted, though mine has not been lifted. Saturday, may 15, 2004. Driving at freeway speed. Veered into left lane to avoid cars that were slowing in my lane. I stepped on the brake as i moved into the left lane. Steering wheel and whole front of car shook violently to the point it felt that it was going to fall apart.took foot off gas/brake and as the car slowed down it stopped shaking after about 5-10 seconds.pulled into far left shoulder b/c i was shaken up, then proceeded home. I took the car to a brake shop.my car had 18,000 miles on it and yet the rotors were warped, so i had the rotors and brake pads replaced.tuesday, may 25, 2004.same freeway incident from above occurred.did some research on the internet and quickly found "death wobble," on a variety of sites about jeeps.discovered problem might be an alignment problem, so i had my car aligned and the tires balanced.sunday, june 20, 2004.car shook again on freeway. Had been told by a friend that turning the wheel slightly to the right might stop the shaking.i did this and the shaking stopped.saturday, july 03, 2004.car shook while going through 9th st. Tunnel in washington dc.took car to rosenthal jeep. Wrote lengthly description of the problem on the drop-off envelope.asked that they check out the entire front of the car.jeep replaced the steering damper -- which was "leaking." saturday, july 10, 2004.car shook on freeway.called rosenthal jeep at 2:57pm.a woman in the service department listened to my problem, put me on hold and then put me into a male's voicemail. Have yet to receive a return phone call. *la

This is another complaint for 'death wobble'.i have had my jeep taken in several times and have had to live with it because mechanics didn't believe me or just didn't solve my problem.i should have used the la lemon law statutes to return my car but didn't know that back then.driving down the road 45-70 mph and either hitting a bump or going around 70 mph your whole front end will "shimmy/shake/wobble"making it feel like a giant earthquake.i have tried to find a class action suit against this as i find several websites/forums/customers complaining about it.right when it shakes you have to slow down below 40 mph - sometimes on the interstate and have had close calls for a collision!if you want just search for 'death wobble' and you will see a whole new world.i don't know what would happen if you didn't slow down as your immediate response is to hit the brakes.parts replaced have been brake rotors/pads, steering dampener, upper and lower control arms, and tires.it still does it to this day.

When brake pedal is depressed the entire vehicle shakes severely. Cause unknown.

Consumer concern about brakes on 2001 jeep cherokee laredo. When the brakes were applied the vehicle shook.the vehicle has been taken tot he dealer several times for repair but the problem always resurfaces.

Front disc brake rotors are warping approximately every 10,000 miles.this causes the brake pedal to pulse and the steering wheel to rotate a few degrees left and right during braking.jeep's warranty specifically excludes brake rotors after 12,000 miles, leading me to the conclusion that they are aware that there is a design or material problem with the brake rotors.rotors should last longer than the brake pads.*nlm

I have been concerned about the braking system as the shoes were cracked and needed to be replaced at 5745 miles.at 12503 miles the rotors needed to be resurfaced.now at 15, 200 miles i still feel a vibration upon applying the brakes and the service department has been very patronizing.they state it's my tires.the goodyear tire dealer stated that if there is vibration upon applying the brakes it is not the tires but it is the brakes.the service department at action motors has been stalling me so that the car reaches 18000 miles and will be ineligible for the lemon law return.i believe there are other jeep owners with the same problem.i've spoken to several jeep owners and they stated they had the same problem.. Unfortunately i did not get anyone's names and addresses but i believe that the nhtsa should investigate all the service records of the jeep cherokee to ascertain how many persons had problems with the braking system. Thank you rosalie cicogna.

While driving on highway at 70 mph and without warning, headlights went completely out causing poor visibility which resulted in an accident, consumer rearended another vehicle causing one injury, upon impact the airbags did not experience deployment, consumer had been to dealer several times due to taillights inoperable and headlamps inoperable prior to accident, dealer replaced fuses and found connector's loose.consumer states front end pulled to the left while driving, dealer found no problems.consumer states on normal braking, pedal goes to the floor and during above mentioned accident brakes locked causing a block of skid marks, prior to accident when dealer could find no problems with abs or hydraulic brake system.vehicle had stalled on 2 occasions at stops, dealer found no problem and 3000 miles later the stalling occurred again, however dealer still could not find problem, possible engine problem.

While the consumer was driving at 25-30 mph, the brakes locked up suddenly.*dt

Also a brake problem that they said they fixed by rotating and cleaning the rotors.is this fixed?

When brakes are applied the vehicle shakes, and driver can hear metal grinding. The front and rear brakes need replacement every 30,000 miles.

Front rotors and the pads are wearing excessively. Front rotors were turned twice, and replaced once. Brake pads were replaced on three occasions from 15.000 miles topresent. Dealer notified. Consumer stated that while driving the steering and front end shakes.

The rotors and brake pads have been replaced twice.

The brakes seem to pulsate when applied. The steering seems to drift over the yellow line at random times when the brakes are applied and the vehicles front end nose dives after braking. These times are unpredictable and sometimes weeks in between.

While driving felt vibration. Whenapplyingbrakes they felt a pulsation coming from brakepads. Took vehicle to dealership, who hadrotors turned.

Vehicle front end shakes when brakes applied. Rotors are warped and have been turned twice by the dealer, once at 5791 miles and again at 14207 miles and now jeep wants to turn them again at 21500 miles. I have been forced to deal with the manufacture myself because my dealer has been told by jeep that they will not replace the rotors, they will only turn them at my cost because this is a maintenance item and not in warranty eventhough the vehicle was purchased this way when it was new. Also this has been a month long process because i cannot get any answers from anyone because they keep saying they are sending this to their district manager who will return my call but i have not recieved any calls so far.

When applying the brake front end vibrated.dealerdetermined that front and rear rotors were warped.

The rotors were warped, which caused the vehicle to experience extended stopping distance.

While applyingthebrakes vehicle vibrated uncontrollably. Consumerwas able to maintain control of the vehicle.drove the vehicle to dealer for analysis, andmechanic noticed that the brake rotors needed to be replaced.

Front brake rotors and pads are wearing excessively from 26,400 miles to present mileage. Repairs made at a repair shop. Dealer notified. Feel free to provide any further information.

Front brake rotors are warping and causing front end to shake when brakes are applied. Had rotors turned twice.

While driving, the front end shook.the dealer replaced the front rotors eight times, but the problem recurred.the dealer did not know why the rotors were wearing out prematurely.the dealer suggested that the rotors could not be fixed properly because of the substandard parts chrysler used.the vehicle would ride rough and the brakes seemed to squeak only when it rained.*sc

When applying brakes, vehicle vibrates/shakes severely. Dealer notified and informed consumer that front brake rotors were out of round due to overheating.

The rotors on the vehicle were warped.

The rotors are warped on my jeep after less than 20,000 miles.this makes it very difficult to stop when applying the brakes and the entire vehicle shakes violently including the steering wheel.obviously this is a defect that daimler chrysler is aware of.too bad they won't admit it.hopefully it will be become a recall. *nlm

The brakes shimmied and shuddered excessively when applied, since the vehicle purchased.dealer diagnosed cause as defective rotors.

Brakes on a jeep cherokee. The brakes on my 2001 jeep cherokee have started shaking the car rappidly when the brakes are applied at freeway speeds. I have contacted the dealer and have been informed that this is not a warranty issue. I also called a local meineke location and was told that this is a common issue with most cherokee's. The result is that this will cost me $300 for a problem that should be covered under a recall.

At 20,000 miles my jeep cherokee shuttered when braking at highway speeds. It was so violent it almost threw my jeep into the dividing wall. I took this to my dealer and was told it was a $700 repair to replace my rotors and break pads. This is covered under a jeep service bulletin but was not a recall. Jeep knew before my vehicle rolled off the assembly line that the brake rotors warped under conditions of high heat or the use of salt on the highways. This is due to the composite metal of the rotor. I then took my vehicle to my regular mechanic and had the rotors replace with chrysler parts. Once again i am experiencing the vibration at 54,000. I have been told the same thing. I am now keeping a collection of warped jeep rotors in hope that eventually they will be held accountable for this problem.

Front brake rotors wapred after only 5000 miles resulting in steering wheel shudder on braking

Rotorsare pitted less than 20000 miles. When applying brakes vehicle is not stopping properly.vehicle has a pulsating action.contacted dealer, and dealerurged consumer to bring vehicle in .please add vin.

Rotor pulsation when braking. This is the second time having the same problem.

*sc

On the way to the dealership, the brakes locked up and the consumer's vehicle rear ended another vehicle. *phthe dealer replaced the rotors.

Severe vibration when applying brakes at highway speed. Dealer was notified, and replacedfront brake rotors on three occasions within every 3,000 miles. But,problem still occurring. Feel free to provide any further details on this matter.

When braking vehicle starts shimmying with great force at high speeds. Dealer has been contacted and shaved down rotors.consumer had a 1997 grand cherokee that experienced the same problem, consumer states the vehicle shaking upon braking makes vehicle seem unstable.

When brakes are applied the vehicle shakes, and driver can hear metal grinding. The front and rear brakes need replacement every 30,000 miles.

Structure underneath is rusting out. Also, brake line iscorroded/ exhaust is pitted, and steering spindlerusted and corroded. Front and rear suspension are corroded also.

After purchasing the vehile, it was driven for roughtly 3,000 miles before the problem happened. I took it to jeep to have it looked at and they said that the rotors were warped and needed to be resurfaced. After it was fixed and driven it was fine until about another 3000 miles and the problem occured again, so it took it to jeep to complain and they just resurfaced the rotors and ignored my compliants. And again it is still recurring. When you go to slow down at any speed the car violently shakes b/c of the warped rotors and it makes it hard to slow down, especailly at high speeds. This problem really increases the stopping time necessary to slow the car. If i had to make a quick stop it would be very hard. It is obviously a malfunction and jeep is ignoring the problem. I've talked to some people and they say it is either the rotors they give are bad or they were mounted at the plant incorrectly which cause the rotors to warp. It is not my driving which jeep likes to blame it on, and i'm sure many other people get the same response from them. Mr

Death wobble.i've rotated the tires, i've had the wheels balanced, i've had the tie-rods replaced and "unpreditable" death wobble continues. I was literally inches away from being rear ended and causing a multicar wreck today on the 22 freeway in santa ana, ca when i had to brake on the freeway to stop the violent wobble. This is a mfg defect that needs to be addressed (and liability assumed) by the mfg.

Dt*:the contact stated that the steering wheel was making a clicking sound while turning.the tilt steering wheel then locked in the forward position.a service dealer was consulted about the problem, but the vehicle was not inspected.

I have a 2001 jeep cherokee and began to notice the problem toward the end of 2012 or first of 2013.when i would reach a speed of around 55 mph, the front wheels/steering wheel would begin to vibrate, shake or whatever you want to call it.it is a violent vibration that is pretty scary and feels like you cannot control the vehicle.it subsides if you immediately slow way down.the problem has gotten progressively worse.it now would start around 45 miles an hour or so, depending on how smooth or bumpy the road is.the bumpier, the more easily in begins the wobble.when i recently researched it online, it is called the "death wobble".i have never put in "non-conforming" parts, nor have i used my vehicle off-road or abused it.i have maintained my vehicle and it has about 160,000 miles on it.i had just taken it in to see if the shaking can be repaired, and the person working on it, replaced almost every part associated with the front suspension etc.in what he thought had corrected the problem, it has only moderately reduced the symptoms.so far, about $800.00 worth of repairs that have not corrected the problem.i don't think i want any of my tax dollars to bail out chrysler corporation if they do not fix the problem at no cost to the consumer.i saw their forced "acknowledgement" of the problem and i also saw that they will not pick up the cost of trying to fix the defect.very disappointed and will not purchase another chrysler product.

Consumer moved steering wheel forward upon exiting 2001 jeep cherokee.now the steering wheel will not move at all. When the steering wheel was moved forward the consumer heard a funny noise.now the steering wheel cannot be moved back to it's normal driving position.the consumer called the dealerand wa given the manufacturers customer service number.the consumer contacted the manufacturer and was told that since the vehicle was no longer under warranty they would not provide any assistance.

The contact owns a 2001 jeep cherokee sport. The contact stated that while she was turning the steering wheel she heard a noise as if plastic was broken. The air bag light illuminated, the horn, the cruise control malfunctioned, and the check engine light illuminated. The vehicle will be taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. The manufacturer will be contacted. The failure mileage was 138,000 and the current mileage was 138,100.

Consumer states that the steering wheel "shimmers" excessively when driving making it difficult to maintain vehicle control.dealer diagnosed cracked steering column.

Consumer was backing out of the driveway and discovered the steering column had disconnected from the wheel.. Consumer was informed by another dealer that the steering sector shaft was not installed correctly, the bolt was not tight, which caused the loss of steering, also the 4 wheel drive level was vibrating and noisy.

While driving the vehicle at 60mph the boltsof the gear box of the power steering broke and consumer lose control of the steering wheel. Dealer has been notified. Please provide further information . Ts

While traveling on highway vehicle oversteered to the right, without prior warning, vehicle lost control and overturned, dealership was aware of problem. Vehicle was analyzed and was found the cause of the accident was due to an improperly tightened adjusting collar on the drag link, this caused the extra effort having to be applied by the operator to turn the wheel to the left to correct the excessive rightward movement of the vehicle, when the adjusting collar finally moved, it created the abrupt maneuver that resulted in the overturning of the vehicle.

Vehicle was at dealer for brake service.mechanic determined that tie rod sleeve was disconnecting and had to be replaced.

While driving, the cruise control didn't set the speed when engaged. The vehicle was taken to a dealership, who indicated that a clock spring failure caused the cruise control to malfunction. The horn is also not operational.the clock spring will be replaced.the right front door contained rust

I have no doubt that had i been in any but the right hand lane, i would have hit another car.i was able to re-enter the right hand lane but kept my speed at 35 mph and exited immediately.car went back to the dealer who said they didn't know what was wrong with it.they said it could be caused by 10-15 different things and the only way to fix it would be to replace everything, starting with steering dampner (not covered under warranty) but had no idea if that would fix it.i have only owned the car for 6 months and have already spent almost $1,000 on trying to have it fixed (including new tires and a wheel alignment).the dealer was completely indifferent to the problem.the service director said it would cost me a lot of money to have everything replaced, and even then, could not guarantee the problem would be fixed.needless to say, these experiences, especially the one on the freeway, which i would rate a 10 on a scale of 1-10 (the others ranging from 1-4), have shaken me to the very core; i could have been killed.i can never again drive that car and feel safe, especially when the dealer has no idea what the problem is or how to fix it.i checked the internet and found 38,000 websites dealing with this problem; prevalent in jeeps.the problem is aptly dubbed "death wobble".

While driving about 20 mph vehicle started wandering side to side until losing control of vehicle, went off, andavoided crashing. Then, dealer had checked brakes, but did not found the cause.

While traveling over the howard-franklin bridge, (this is a 6 month old 2001 jeep cherokee grand laredo with 13000 miles) heading into tampa, florida at a rate of 65 mph my driverside rear tire outer sidewall failed and instantly went flat and could have caused a fatal accident, not to mention, causing the jeep to drop hard on the road with the rim, thereby damaging my wheel rim and rendering the tire useless.a florida road ranger assisted me and changed my tire with the spare.my tire did not hit any object nor did any object hit my tire.i contacted goodyear and showed them the tire at their goodyear tire center located at 7511 49th street, pinellas park, florida 33782..(727) 547-8422. They would not replace the tire until i gave them my old tire to be shipped, at my expense, to corporate goodyear's test labs.a little like the fox watching the hen house in my opinion.i got alot of bs from goodyear and explainations about the tire failure that with a little common sense didn't add up. This tire is visually a defect from the looks of the tread seperation from the sidewall, just like i have seen on the news with the firestone tires.the local goodyear dealer didn't satisfy me and didn't even care about my needs so, i contacted goodyear corporate by phone.they told me that the sidewall looked all shreded up because the tire rolled on itself deflated at the 65 mph speed as i coasted to at stop ( thank god i didn't panic and use my brakes) ( in heavy rush hour traffic on a four lane bridge traveling in the third lane ).if their theory about shreding is true, why didn't the interior sidewall get shreded?it looks like new. They're full of excuses.i want all of these tires off my truck.if i have my family riding in this vehicle i don't feel safe knowing what might occur. Please take a look at my tire.i know something is very wrong with the way it was constructed and came appart.thank you.this is my second request in 4 months.thomas a. Nervina

The end of 2001 we saw the paint was cracking on our 201 jeep cherokee. We brought it to the dealer we brought it from and they refused to repair the hood and front of our jeep. The refusal was made due to the fact that it has been repainted once. We bought the vehicle new and have not done any work to it.we are currently perparing for small claims court to have it repaired.this is our fourth jeep and our last because of this. This problem should have been taken care of at our dealer and should never have had to go though this hassel.the vehicle was bought at forest lake chrysler/dodge/jeep in forest lake, minnesota. This is suppose to be a five star dealership.

2001 jeep cheerokee evaporator failure in ac system.from internet research this is a very common issue.heard evaporator metal material corrodes (not compatible) with r134 refrigerant.didn't realize the extent of issue until 2009.

I have replaced 3 window regulators in my 2001 jeep cherokee within the past 2 years, each costing me from $250 to $330. I have talked with chrysler about this issue and they are aware of the bad design but are not going to help me pay for the next window regulator. A few months ago when the 2nd window regulator failed, the window slowly slid down and it was raining pretty hard, a truck passed by while we were pulling out onto the street and splashed my 1 year old daughter with mud/debri and water.i feel chrysler needs to step up and take action of their known problems and get this resolved before we see a serious injury.
