The contact owns a 1998 jeep cherokee. The contact stated that the air bag warning light remained illuminated for an extended period of time and the instrument cluster failed to work due to the gauges not functioning properly. The vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 00v105000 (air bags). The contact was unable to pass a vehicle inspection due to the failure. The vehicle was to be taken to a dealer for further inspection. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 130,000.

Nhtsa recall 00v10500/manufacturer's recall 860:air bag modulewas repaired, but the air bag warnig light still came on.dealer has tried to repair the problem several times, but it is still reoccurring. *ml

While driving about 40 mph vehicle ran head on into a tree, andairbags failed to deploy.

As i have reported, i have had numerous serious issues with this vehicle and i do not feel it is a safe car.this vehicle has also been recalled twice, for front brake rotors and defective air bag module, (replaced and moved from under the passanger seat front to under the console).i have contacted chrysler corp. With this same information and my feelings that this vehicle is not safe and am awaiting a reply.i do not expect any monetary or new vehicle etc., i'm just reporting the safety problems i have had with this vehicle to any and all agenciesto have something on record.i wish to state also that the dealership i bought this vehicle from have been very accomodating and there has never been a problem with them at any time.

Got in the vehicle to go to an appointment, and the airbag warning light was illuminated. Also, i no longer have cruise control, or the use of the horn. I was told by chrysler that there may be a future recall on the clockspring mechanism that controls these items. I was also told that while it is highly unlikely, there is a chance that the airbag could inadvertently be deployed for no reason. I am still waiting for a recall to begin. The part to repair the car is over $250. I am still driving the car as i am on social security and can't afford the parts. My hope is that i don't have a takata airbag on top of it all!!

Air bag light is on,we find a recall that is open and active. Bright vehicle to yaklin for repair and they declined the repair because the part has been discontinued.

Jeep developed communication issues, dash displayed "no bus." one morning i started the jeep and went to shift to gear and the passenger air bag deployed. Took it up the road and back thinking i had a communication issue to diagnose, the drivers air bag deployed turning on my road. Seemed to happen when pressing the brake.i learned about the recall corrosion in air bag module may lead to inadvertent deployment. I dropped my vehicle off to nye dodge jeep ram in oneida ny. Repair order was made nov 14th 2019. I was given a 1-800 number to call, placed 4 calls before my case was escalated correctly. Made numerous calls to the 800 number and eventually on 12/5 maybe 12/6 an inspector came and inspected my vehicle. With basically no progress after a month and a half i picked up my vehicle. With a couple more calls to the 800 number and being told were "on hold" with chryslers end my vehicle is still not fixed and the 800 number calls all end with well leave a message for whoever is in charge with your case to call you, they have yet to call going on 3 weeks. I was told the airbags are not available from chrysler. Looking for a solution or to at least get the module installed in the right location and ill source airbags. It has been an absolutely ridiculous amount of time to not have any answers and my recall not completed.

It started with the lights turning off when i hit a bump. The whole jeep would go dark.instrument panel, overhead lights, driving lights, all of them! then after parking the jeep, day or night, the alarm system would go off all by itself.the door switches locking and unlocking while i was driving down the road.then there was the radio that would turn on and off by itself.then the windows decided to stop going up and down. When i would start the jeep the instrument panel gauges wouldn't move, turn on. So, i would turn off the jeep and restart it. Some of the gauges, would turn on but others, would not, like the fuel tank gage, speedometer gage.during the summer months, there would be a puddle of water on the passenger side floor board. I still to this day don't know what caused it to happen every day and each time it was turned on.then there is the transmission and rear endthat started having problems. It started to slip out of gear and the rear end made a noise.i had all the oil levels checked out, but still it would happen. I do recall getting a flyer in the mail, regarding a recall, but it also said that the dealer, did not have the parts to fix the problem. Why would you send out a flyer that you have no way of fixing because you can't get the part's? !and are youeven concerned about the worry you put me through?it became another reason to park the jeep. How could you do.this, to so many people?with all these strange things happening to the jeep, i had to do what was best for my safety, as well as, those who were on the road driving around me. I just couldn't live with myself, knowing that i could have cost someone or myself injury or death,by having the jeep on the road knowing it was having so many problems.it has now been close to three-years since the last time i drove it.

Three months after the purchase of the vehicle, rust marks appeared.the electrical system malfuntioned with out any warning.there have been problems with the air conditioner and the radio. There is a thumping noise in the rotors that was fixed but the noise still remains. *jg

My 1998 cherokee classic is havingthesame issues as many other complaints i have read. The issues involvethe speed and tach gauges dropping to zero, the rest of the dash gauges not responding from whatever position they are in when rest of gauges go south, the "idiot" lights don't work, and the wretched airbag light luminatesthe whole time all this other stuff is going on.the speed is not a factor. It can happen at any speed, even when i first start the vehicle.it can happen once in a while to several times in a mile, cutting in and out. This problem has been going on even longer than what i listed.february of last year is when it started being more than a once in a while, sporadic issue. Before then, it happened less than 10 times, since owning the vehicle late 2007.

Air bag light comes on and all gauges stop working-- pressing hard on the face of the gauge cluster or smacking the top of the dash restores everything.. Owned it for 4 years and previous owner said they experienced it before me.. Now it has started a new additional problem, "check gauges" light comes on and volt meter pegs to the right at 19 volts. Smacking doesn't help this, it just goes away in a few miles...

Airbag light comes on and then the speedometer and tachometer go to zero so i have no idea how fast i am going at the time.

Numerous problems with 1998 jeep cherokee sport.during the first year of owning the vehicle the vehicle was at the dealer 12 times for rust marks on the vehicle which the dealer described as fall out and they insisted it was something the consumer had done to cause it to happen so soon, the electrical system failed, as the consumer was driving all the gauges went out and the vehicle just stopped, the air condition and radio were inoperative and still is, there was a thumping noise which was attributed to the rotors which was supposedly fixed.the most recent problem was with the power windows.

Dt*: the contact stated the air bag light continued to illuminate in the vehicle. As a result the other gauges would not illuminate.when the vehicle went over a bump in the road, the air bag light would go off and the other gauges worked properly.the dealership determined there was a wiring problem with the vehicle and offered to repair the vehicle at the owner's expense. Updated 9/13/2006 -

I own a 1998 jeep cherokee sport. I noticed recently a wiring problem to both the front door speakers. I called the dealer and they told me it was common for there to be shorts in the wires that go from the body into the door. They said they usually see the failures in the door lock wiring or the power window wiring. The speaker wiring travels the same route into the door. I realize that the power in a speaker wire wont probably cause a fire, but the power window motor is 25 amps and it could cause a major fire in the wiring if shorted. I was told by the dealer that the cost to replace just the speaker wiring would be $140 per door in labor alone. If there were ever something that recalls were meant for, this is it. I am having the speaker wiring replaced at an audio store, but i have no idea what to expect from the power windows or door locks at this point. This is an unsafe condition and it should be addressed with a recall. I just cant afford to do it on my dime.

Had driven vehicle homeand parked. Did not smell anything and had no warning. Got out of vehicle. Around 9:00 pmsmelled smoke and checked vehicle. Noticed vehicle was in flames. The fog lamps stopped working. Warranty had expired. Contacted dealer they stated that there was no re-call on this. Six months later when they were replacing the rotors on re-call,i said something to the mechanic about the lights. He stated that they knew about the problem. He asked if i ever used the power outlet for a phone. I stated yes! he said that when using the outlet it was melting the wires to the fog lamp switch making it unoperable. Still the switch has not been replaced. I'mnot the only person here at work that has that problem. Another fire fighters lamps stopped working just after his warranty was up,and his was never replaced either..

Air conditioning evaporators failing in jeep vehicles from 96 on up, cherokees in particular. It is a very expensive repair for a piece of equipment that should never fail through normal use. The evaporator is installed in the heater box behind the dashboard and takes 8 hours of labor to replace. This is a common item to fail but i thought i'd actually file a complaint and see if something could be done. This also results in very poor defrosting of the windshield.

On hot days the front brakes lock up and would not release, causing linings to smoke. When the air conditioner is on, the compressor kicks in at night while driving with the headlights on. When filling the gas tank, the filler pipe makes a slurping sound, causing the gasoline to slush back and forth in the gas tank.

Air conditioner evaporator is leaking, it won't hold any type of fluid.chrysler stated there were other evaopator problems on other chrysler vehicles, but not this specific model.

I was on my way to work headed south on i-69 in fort wayne, indiana.i had just passed the indiana state road 14 underpass when a semi truck tire and rim (the whole thing) came off a semi truck and rolled across three lanes of traffic where my jeep hit it.it hit the front passenger side of my jeep.directly in the front but the right half of the bumper/front end.the tire then went under my car where it forced me to slide in to the cement median in the middle of the highway hitting my driver side front bumper at about 35 miles an hour or so.my airbags did not deploy.

When i called a jeep dealer to report that my 1998 jeep cherokee had just stopped running on a very busy street, he said right away that my fuel sending unit must have failed and that, although my gas gauge showed 1/4 tank of gas remaining, i was out of gas.he was so adament about this that he must have seen the same problem in other 1998 cherokees.i have also heard of other 1998 cherokees with the same problem.since crown chrysler (not the selling dealer) replaced the fuel sending unit, my gas gauge now drops from 1/2 to empty and i'm worried enough to drive right to a service station.the gauge is apparently still defective, as filling up the tank at these times requires only 8 gallons.i'm a single woman who has to drive at night and i don't feel safe with a gas gauge i can't trust.

Standard jeep cherokee (had been maintained by us gvt. 1998 jeep cherokee limited 4.0 - when turning left and the fuel level is below aprox 1/3 full the engine stalls and stops running.this created a very dangerous situation when proceeding through intersections with on coming traffic.i am aware that many jeep owners are experiencing the same problem which leads to a conclusion that this is a manufacturer defect.

The car dies every time a left turn is made, even when the fuel tank is 1/4 full.it is in my opinion that the manufaturer should have placed the fuel pickup in the center of the tank to prevent the loss of power during a turn.it is possible to have a complete loss of power during an evasive manuver, thereby losing both braking and steering ability.furthermore, the manufaturer has installed the fuel pump in such a way that the aftermarket cannot make a replacement part.please contact me for further information.

Gas tankhas a hole ontop of tank and is leakinggasoline. Dealer has been notified.

Fuel tank began to spontaneously leak from the top when filling the tank completely full. Dealership removed tank, inspected, and found no evidence of damage or wear and had no explanation for the leak. Just as with complaint odi id: 755138, dealer could not duplicate the problem. They speculate that the tank may be deforming under load (i.e., a full tank of fuel) causing the leak. If true, this would suggest structural failure or material defect of the tank as suggested in odi id: 755138. In summary, the problem is essentially identical to odi id: 826441.

I had purchased a 1998 jeep cherokee new from the dealer.several times i brought it in while under warranty to have it repaired because the car would cut out, stall and become sluggish.they were never able to rectify the problem, or in some cases they just stated they could not duplicate the problem.of course after the warrantee ran out by time and miles the car went dead on me and i was advised the problem was in the fuel tank.the fuel tank is design such that it deteriorates and plugs the fuel pump over a period of time.i learned this through parts suppliers who were unwilling to give a guarrantee on their pumps knowing the tank would continue to deteriorate and plug the pump.the dealer told me he wanted over one thousand dollars to replace the tank because of the deterioration.he refused to replace only the fuel pump and told me the tank was defective.of course the chrysler corporation refused to warrantee the product after the time and miles were up.my question is this: if the fuel tank is deteriorating because of a design fault is that a safety problem.i myself having a limited mechanical backgroud would think so.these tanks are deteriorating in thousands of vehicles and chrysler is well aware of the problem.i don't think there is any doubt a fuel tank is a critical part of a vehicle, and i don't think jeep is going to con thousands of consumers into changing their fuel tanks.at this time i need a vehicle to drive and i am going to replace my fuel pump not the tank.however if this is a safety concern why isn't jeep voluntarily taking care of it.please let me know where i stand with this issue.thank you.brendan finnerty

Fuel guage reads thattank has a quarter of gas when it was on empty. This caused consumer to run out of gas without notice. Dealer has been contacted.

Ran out of fuel, gauge showed 1/4 tank, narrowly avoided collision on interstate in 65 mph traffic, third failure; also have multiple times when dashboard guages go blank while driving.

When shifting forward one position to overdrive without thumb button pressed, shift lever went forward to reverse, causing vehicle to lose control at high speedwhich resulted in a crash with injuries sustained.this is the second time this happened to the driver.the first incident was aprx 2 months prior and was not reported because driver thought she may have had thumb button pressed in.she changed the way she was shifting to overdrive so that thumb was not resting onbutton and thought that would solve the problem. Apparently it did not.vehicle rolled twice as a result of crash.may also be related to intermittent problem of key being stuck in ignition.solution was to repeatedly press thumb button on shift lever until key would finally release.please advise owner of any findings.

Car amost ran over me, struck another vehicle. Was placed in park and jumped out. Did a moderate amt of damage to the other vehicle.i drove immediately to the dealership.they told me nothing was wrong and it was not the car it was me the driver.told me the jeep passed inspection and that i just thought i put it in park.this also happened on 7/1/01 again, however the jeep was stopped before striking another vehicle.all of this infromation can be verified by a police report and insurance information.this caused a moderate amt of damage. If someone was behind the car, it could have crushed them. I had minor scrapes from trying to get back in vehicle and stop it to avoid a collision. This has cost me an increase in insurance premiums and also a wreck on my record.i have never had any type of accident. This was a very scary incident.however, the dealership convinced me it was operator error.however, after this happened again last week, i am not so sure.thank you for your time.

No specific problem.... Just a general complaint that has been echoed by every mom i've talked to.1.in my jeep, we had to get a different seat belt in order to make the car seat work. 2.here's a cry for simpler more universal designs. We have two different cars and it took us 6 hours to refit both cars to make the car seat work the first time.then, when grandma showed up in her car, we had to do it all over again.it should not take an hour to install a car seat for the first time and then you only hope you've got it right. Of course, you are doing this while holding a child and a diaper bag etc.3.need more places that we can take our cars to see if the seat is in right. Can we just drive over to the highway patrol office at any time to do this? why not?4. These things shouldn't be this hard!... P>s> both my husband and i have college degrees and he's is in engineering.

Recall 00v136000 repairs have not corrected the recall problem. Rotors have been replaced 3 times since first taken into dealer for recall. Battery failed and was replaced. Dash gauges malfunctioned due to cluster harness failure. The air bag light stays on. Fog lamp switch failed. The front pinion seal was leaking. The buckle for rear middle seat belt broke.

When the weather is cold (i.e. Below 25 degrees) the driver side seat belt locks in the home possition. After multiple trys on multiple days the seat belt stays in the home position. When the weather warms up or the heater in the car has been on for a long time, then the seat belt will release so that it may be used.

While driving, consumer turned to the right to avoid another vehicle, however vehicle skidded, hit a guardrail, and then rolled over, the orange button to release the seat belt was pulled up 1/4-1/2 inches, seat belt did not hold, causing driver to be tossed around during vehicle rollover, claim 47-4282-720.

When taking a right turn the seatbelt holding our 6 month old infant in his rear facing car seat unhooked and the entire car seat (including base)tipped over. He is in the center of the back seat. He was not injured, only startled.

Seat belt locks in docking position when temp is below 25 f ,causing driver to not have a restrant if accident occurs.

Intermittently it was hard to unlock the front passenger seat belt.dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem.

Consumer'shusband lost control of the jeepthat rounded overinto atree, the seats belt did not hold him in, nordid side air bags deploy.

There is a travel stop button on the seatbelt that keeps the belt from returning too far into the retraction/locking system.this button keeps the belt from being able to be adjusted to fit a small child by about 4 inches.both mychildren are approximately 40 lbs..the seatbelt at its smallest allowable adjustment is too big.this problem prevents the seatbelt from being worm as per guidlines and is in my opinion a severe safety shortcoming.anyone having children out ofchild seat age has children susceptible to injuries involving even quick stops.

Seat belts are not working properly,left/ right and rear passengers' seat belts do not work properly.ccs will tilt over because thebelts won't retract correctly.this is dangerous because the seat doesn't stay in place.

The seat frame on the front drive side is constantly moving. The vehicle is hard to manuever with a unstable seat to sit in. The seat track was recently repaired. The dealer is aware. Please provide more information.

: front driver's side seat bolt has came through the left part of the frame of the seat which caused the seat to fall back and to the right, consumer strongly believes this to be a safety issue, cust took veh to dlr, dlr stated that this is normal wear and tear, this has happened before to another jeep i saw in this site. Consumer seeks to have the seat repaired at no cost as this is clearly unsafe if veh was to be in an accident.

A drivers seat frame weld has failed, causing the seat to become unstable. This problem is well documented on this make and model of vehicle.

I noticed my seat leaning to the side.looking under the seat, i saw where the metal rails on the bottom of the seat, where it attached to the floor mount, to have completely broken away from the bolts. I now have a rocking drivers chair. It is difficult to drive laying on your back.

1998 jeep cherokee se 2-door - front driver's seat frame broke at the front-left point where it mounts to the rails assembly.the seat had become a little wobbly in bumpy/uneven areas on the road (i live in new england where there are a lot of hills and the roads are not flat and smooth) and one day, coming over the bump at the end of a construction zone the seat made a popping noise and i was jarred toward the middle of the car.now the seat totters from side to side depending on what way i am turning or the angle of the road/bumps.to correct this i will either have to purchase a new seat, which will be pretty difficult considering that this problem is very wide-spread so there are basically none of these seats available, or i will have to weld the seat frame back together where it broke.the last alternative would be to purchase an aftermarket seat, which is a little pricey at $250usd.

Seat back does not adjust in full upright position due to design.

I sat in the drivers seat and it pitched back so bad i felt like i was going to land in the back seat.i checked a few jeep cherokee goups on the web and found out seat frames had a tendancy to break. I then called my jeep dealership and asked about a possible recall. The service writer researched it and told me jeep had no history of seat problems and he had never heard of a problem. I removed the seat and inspected it. At first it looked like the problem was that the seat frame had broken on the front right corner. I removed the seat back, fabric and padding to repair the frame, and found that the seat frame had broken near every weld.

Front driver's side seat bolt has camethrough the middle frame of the seat which could cause the seat to fall backwards in the event the other bolt separates.consumer has replaced parts. Please provide any further details.

Driver's side seat has become unsafe due to bolt securing front left of seat to vehicle being too small for hole and eventually wore through.now due to stress failure from poor design the seat is unrepairable.based on other complaints on this website, it appears fruitless to ask dealer for appropriate repairs at no cost.this poor design should not have resulted in added expense to owner.

Left front attachment of driver's seat tore loose. Hole for attachment bolt was very near edge of part allowing (starting?) tear.

Drivers seat of 1998 jeep cherokee classic failed.left front attachment rail nutworked it's way through the railing causing front left part of seat to dislodge itself from seat track, which allowed seat to fall back and to the right.nuts which attach seat to track are smaller than bolt holes causing nuts to work through bolt holes resulting in seat track and seat base failure. I explained to dealer that this was not normal wear and tear.dealer did not reimburse me for the cost of a new base, which cost $350.00.the new base included larger attachment nuts with a note stating do not use old attachment nuts.the note and larger attachment nuts reinforces the fact that the manufacturer knew they had a problem with these attachment bolts, but refuse to acknowledge it or reimburse consumers for their expenses related to this problem.*nlm

Consumer has had the driver's seat repaired three timesbecause the anchorage broke.also, passenger's front seatbroke.manufacturer repaired the seat the first time.the last couple of times consumer repaired the seat.

I think my jeep is remotely bugged somehow, abs light comes on and my brakes work, abs light goes out and my brakes make noise and pedal goes down further like i have no brakes. Also, temperature gauge is steady then suddenly it goes up and down. I have checked fluids, had brakes inspected (replaced pads and front rotors) i went to police said they had no way of testing for bugs.

The button and spring popped out of the emergency brake lever upon application of the brake.it appears there might have been many similar incidents and possible nhtsa incident number applied for earlier model years.that number 95rv172000 was obtained via internet search of jeep owner websites and commercial automotive magazine information.the emergency brake is inoperable without the release button, however, at this time the brake is in the released position and vehicle is drivable.

Extremely long stopping distances and extremely high pedal effort, added some rebuilt parts.

While driving consumer applied the brakes and pedal went to the floor.consumer swirled in order to avoid a pedestrian and animal.consumer was unable to maintain control of the vehicle and hit a ditch.upon impact, both frontal air bags did not deploy.a medical technician was on duty from the ambulance, and examined the driver, who was okay.the vehicle was towed, and totaledby the insurance company.

Rotors became warped at 19380 miles and 34087 miles and had to be turned due to flat spots on them. The original disc pads are still inuse and there was no excessive slamming of the brakes or sudden stops involved. This is unacceptable. I have been told by my mechanic that this is due to the thinness of the backing on the rotor hub, a problem similiar to that found on certian fords in the past. Problem should be corrected and owners reimbursed for expenses already incurred.

Vehicle has had an on going problem since the 4th day after i bought it,it has a vibration at 55-65 mph.the tires have been balanced countless times, the drive shaft has been replaced the transfercase has been lowered, the wheels have been replaced, the tires were replaced, the transfer case has been overhauled countless times in at dealer to repair and still has not been corrected.additionally brakes pads and rotors were replaced for a pulsation, transfer case output seal was replaced for a leak, and little odds and ends.( dot number: tire size: p225/75/15 )

Rotors warped causing noise.

Rotors were recalled [nhtsa recall no. 00v136/chrysler recall no. 879] and replaced at 20,400 miles. At 32,000, additional noise problems. Replacement rotors are bad with only 16,000 miles on them! dealer says damage to rotors caused by heat from pads, but top of line ceramic pads were used (low-heat). Mechanic says rotors are defective, rotors don't just melt. Replaced rotors at own cost. Took bad rotors back to dealer. They blamed pads, but seemed surprised at the extent of damage to the rotors. According to the complaints filed on this site, i'm not the only one having problems with the replacement rotors used in the recall.

The first incident happen around nov of 2002, while driving on a wet road in tampa, fl, speed about 35 mph. I was attempting to stop at a stop sign. When i apply my brakes, the rear brakes locked up and i slid through the stop sign, missing two cars. The rear brakes lock up at odd times. The brakes have been replaced and the housing has been cleaned, both drums have been turned. Fluid has been drained from system and replaced with new dot 3 brake fluid. No improvement, brakes still lock up.

Brake fluid level drops below add mark in reservoir approximately every 5-6 thousand miles. Vehicle has been to dealership service department twice for this problem. Each time the dealership has said they, can't see any leak, and failed to perform any further investigation. Brake fluid was full when vehicle was delivered new, has been refilled twice (never by dealer), and is currently half way between full and add marks 8 months after delivery.

Brakes lock up when wet or cold.i have had the master cylinder and proportioning valve replaced in june.3 weeks later the car was back at a dealership in petoskey, michigan because the brakes locked up again 4 times.they replaced the shoes and turned the drum on the right rear wheel.the warranty service department told the dealership they have had many complaints about this, "tell her to get a heated garage and live with it."any problems you know of with the brakes locking up on jeep cherokees?i dont' feel safe in this vehicle and if the brakes lock up while traveling at a faster speed in city traffic or on the highway, i dont' think my chances of survival are very good.

The car wanders, and loses the ability to steer. The problem is intermittent, and has been for 5000 miles. The vehicle has been back to the dealership 3 times, and repaired twice. It was in an accident, due to the problem, and was inspected, but they found no problems at the time. It's intermittent, they know that but don't care. Under any speed vehicle will pull toright, anddealership is aware of problem.

At approximately 55mph vehicle began what has been described by other jeep owners as "death wobble', a violent shaking in the front end that only goes away after slowing down. I don't recall hitting any heavy bumps, just the usual road cracks common on highways in southern oregon. After the first occurance, every time the vehicle reaches approx. 55mph the shaking reoccurs.i have been told that this is caused by poorly designed components in the original design of the cherokee (xj) model as well as other jeep models using the same front suspension design. My mechanic told me this is very common, and that chrysler should have addressed this long ago, but did not. When will they finally address this issue?

While driving on the highway if the vehicle hit a small bump on the road vehicle will shake and vibrate uncontrollably.

The right side of the jeep hit a small bump in the road and the entire front of the car began to oscillate at high speed.the only way to make it stop was to slow down on the highway during traffic.i had to slow down to approximately 30 miles per hour.after the oscillation stopped we began travelling again and got up to 55 mph again.a small bump in the road was hit and same situation occurred.this vehicle has a completely stock suspension system and we've only owned it for approximately 2 years.

Recently i have noticed that at speeds of around 50-60 mph my jeep cherokee begins to violently shake when brakes are applied or after passing over a bump.while researching this online i have determined that it is similar to other complaints that are being characterized as "death wobble."this is a very dangerous condition and appears to be directly contributed to faulty front end component design on jeep cherokees/wranglers.i have found that if i am not braced and prepared for this, that this could easily escalate into a very unsafe condition resulting in a possible accident/crash.while researching online, it appears that this is a very common condition among jeep owners.thank you for your time and consideration on this matter.

I purchased some firestone tires wilderness atiii size 30x9.50r15lt for my 1998 jeep cherokee on 9/8/99. Since the day they were purchased, i've experienced problems with the tires. My truck drove differently. My tires gave a knocking sound and the best way i know to describe the problem, it seemed as though they were about to come aloose from my vechicle. I went to my local firestone dealer and they assured me the tires were "ok" each time i went. I visited a firestone dealer on 8/7/00 and he stated as a customer satisfaction gesture, he would allow me to trade my tires in and get some replacement tires. The tires were to be in on thursday 8/10/00 and they would be mounted on my vechicle at that time. Firestone did a recall on 8/9/00 and when i contacted the dealer, he stated he could not replace my tires because they only had instructions to replace a certain tire and my tire was not on the list. I urged him to replace them as we had agreed and allow me to pay the difference but he refused (this was the original plan anyway). He then proceeded to hang up. I took my vechicle in on 8/7 and 8/8 so they could test drive the vechicle to see how the tires performed. Each time they assured me the tires were "ok". To date, i have not had any accidents from these tires. However, i urge your office to investigate the idea of firestone expanding this recall. I plan to purchase some more tires because i tired of fighting with this company about my complaints. I haven't been satisfied with these tires since they were purchased. I sent an e-mail to firestone on 8/8 and on 8/7 i contacted the consumer affairs dept and the receptionist did a 3-way conference call with the manager of my local firestone company on rodney parham rd. In little rock. His name was dave (?) and he told me to bring my truck in and he would do a replacement. After the recall was announced, he change his mind. I have not heard anything from the company, nor do i expect to. I do want this compliant logged.*

The left rear tire side completely shredded;no apparent puncture, only 33000.00 miles on tires/rate of speed was 70 mph, could have very easily resulted in a serious accident for a less experienced driver.several people that looked at the tire commented that it was not your normal flat tire.( dot number: tire size: rt/s )

Consumerwas traveling about 70mph, and left rear tire blew out.later that day right front tire blew out. Tread came off completely six hours after purchasingthe tires. *ml

Due to carbon build up in the insturment panel, the instrument panel malfunctioned, causing loss of gas gauge/odometer and speedometer.dealer cannot determine on how to fix the vehicle.been to dealer 4 times.

Check engine light continually illuminates, unable to determine failure.

Defroster does not work. Antwerpen dealer said something was dropped in there and they had to charge 600 to replace it. I took it to a mechanic who said that the cable was defective and jeep no longer made it and i had to replace the whole system. Since they made a defective part and it is a safety issue they should fix it for free.

Nothing i tried to call dealer and they were not very helpful. I think they feel if they ignore people they won't have to fix our cars.

Front passenger side power window makes noise when raising or lowering. Yh

The motor on the power window failed.

I purchased the 1998 jeep brand new from the dealer (6/22/98). On approximately 2/22/01 the regulator that operates the left front (driver's side) power window failed and needed to be replaced. The dealer performed this and since the vehicle was still under warranty, there was no charge. Now on 1/26/05 the regulator on the right front power window also failed. I took it to my local mechanic who replaced this regulator and i was charged $407.40 for this. It is my contention that this reflects an obvious vehicle part defect. For both to fail completely out of the blue seems to indicate a defective part rather than normal wear and tear. I have a 1989 olds that my father purchased new, and we have never had to replace any parts of the power window units. I request that daimler-chrysler reimburse me for the cost of $407.40 for the second incident.*sc

Power window mechanism failed, presenting a safety issue by immobilizing the window. Upon inspection, it was revealed that jeep has re-designed the mechanism by replacing a failure prone plastic component with a metal component. However, no recall or notice was given to owners of vehicles with the failure prone parts, and jeep also charges for the re-designed replacement assembly. I believe this component is especially likely to fail during an accident, especially a rollover type of accident, where the window assembly would be subjected to a sudden downward force. I have digital pictures of the old and revised components and can email them if desired. I also have retained a failed original component. I know that this is a common failure on jeep cherokees. *nlm
