Re: follow-up letter from frank seales, jr., chief counsel, nhtsa, dated4/15/99.my 1996 jeep cherokee is not listed as having an available airbag switch.furthermore, after scanning the list of five middle atlantic states, i found no chrysler corporation dealers listed.

When applying brakes vehicle pulled to the left and did not stop.vehicle crossed the center line, and hit another vehicle head-on. Also, driver's side airbag did not deploy. Dealer did not look at vehicle. There is currentlyrecall 0013600 on the front brake rotors.

Car hydroplaned into an embankment when attempting to stop.luckily the rear window on the liftgate of the jeep popped off on impact to the embankment.first defect:back of drivers seat broke causing driver to be ejected from the vehicle through the rear window of the liftgate.second defect:airbag did not deploy even though there was damage to the front of the vehicle.can't give true estimate for the amount of damage since all medical bills have not been provided by health providers.$ 5,412 worth of personal property (jewelry and other) lost during impact to the embankment.

I was driving down the highway, and all of a sudden i heard a loud noise. So i pulled over to the nearest gas station and realized i was leaking oil profusely. Then i realized the driver side motor mount had broken off of the engine causing a large hole in the engine block. I have taken great care of my vehicle, changed the oil every 3,000 miles, and then this happens at random. I didn't hit anything to cause the motor mount to break, so why would it break for no reason? anyways, the leaking oil caused a fire beneath my vehicle, and inside the engine compartment. But i quickly put out the fire by a container of water i had in my vehicle. I had my 13 year old brother with me and thank god he or myself was not injured. But it caused us great fear and stress.

I have a 1996 jeep cherokee. The heater started making a funny noise so we bought a new blower motor. Then we bought a new resistor. We still could not get the speeds to work in the heater. So we then bought a switch. Well we come to find out that the switch harness was burnt to a crisp. I called the parts store and they don't carry them, so i then called a dealer. The dealer told me they don't just sell that harness i had to buy the entire one for everything in the jeep. Then told me to go cut one out of a junk yard. I called my local junk yard and the guy went and cut three harnesses out. One that was a 1996, one that was a 1995, and both of the ends were burnt just like mine. He then cut one out of an even older one, and the wires were thicker than the ones on mine, and different colors. I tried hooking it up and it doesn't work. I believe that should be a recall and it should have to be replaced by the company. The company should also sell individual harnesses.

The electronic system malfunctions.when this happens driver has no indication of the feul level and has no turn signals .the dealer has repaired the vehiclefour times.the manufacturer has been notified .

- the contact stated that while driving behindthe 1996 jeep cherokee at 60 mph, she noticed smoke coming from under the vehicle.the contact flashedthe lights to get the attention of the driver.the driver pulled to the shoulder, got out of the vehicle and backed away.the vehicle began to burn, and had to be towed.the contact did not know the cause of the fire.the fire department was called and they extinguished the fire. The contacthad not received a police or fire department report.there were no injuries.

The contact owns a 1996 jeep cherokee. While driving various speeds, the speedometer seized without warning and the vehicle began to decelerate. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where the failure could not be determined. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 120,000. The vin was not available.

Four electrical failures.

Vehicle began stalling when coming to an abrupt stop or being jarred by a bump or pot hole. Gradually progressed to randomly stalling when applying any pressure to brakes or any slight jarring. All power is lost at this time along with any control of steering and accelerating until vehicle is turned on again. Recently vehicle repeatedly and intermittently stalls without any pattern during acceleration or deceleration at any speed without any braking or jarring. It then catches on its own and regains power.

Car stalls while driving with no warning. Stalls on freeway or in city driving. This is an infamous manufacturing defect on 96 jeeps. Very hazardous because engine cuts out completely while in motion. Requires pulling over with engine not running to restart engine. Jeep then will repeatedly die after re-starting. Since engine dies while in motion, cars behind are in real danger of colliding with my vehicle. This issue is almost impossible to fix with normal mechanical problem-solving. Engine light does not come on. This issue is well documented in online blogs for jeeps with this problem. This problem with stalling while in motion poses a great threat to public safety. Jeep/chrysler is aware and does not acknowledge the problem.

The contact owns a 1996 jeep cherokee. The contact stated that while driving approximately 30 mph with the air conditioner activated on high, smoke began to emit from the ignition switch. The air conditioner was turned off in order to stop the smoke from emitting. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer for diagnostics. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 61,015.

While operating the vehicle i kept smelling burning plastic.the heater fan quit and when i jiggled the switch it started to operate at high fan only and would not let me set it to low.then it quit working and i removed the switch to replace it.i found that the wiring harness was melted.i am now concerned about the danger of replacing the switch.i am not sure if i can replace the melted part of the wiring harness.i also noticed that the switch has 5 connections but only 4 wires were connected to it.

While driving at aprox. 40-45 mph, the jeep would start to shudder. Eventually it would shut off. The jeep would then crank but not start. I had this problem happen for about four times. Three of the times the jeep was towed to a repair shop. Twice thepcm unit was replaced and twice the crank position sensor was also replaced. The last repair was 1 month and a half ago. Two days ago, the jeep stalled again down the road. I was traveling with my wife and children. We almost lost our lives. A 16 wheeler almost collided with us due that i could barely manipulate the jeep because it turned off on me. I tried to do some visual inspections under the hood. I had one of my sons to wiggle the pcm (computer) while i cranked the starting switch. At one point the jeep managed to start again. Then it stalled the moment my son stopped wiggling the pcm. I had another tow truck pick up the jeep and send it back to the mechanic. Chrysler has not corrected this issue on the pcm and perhaps might not do it until one day someone gets seriously hurt. Videos on youtube show other jeep cherokee owners having the same problem 1996-2001.

The jeep will start to shake whenever you hit a bump really bad shaking . Also whenever you come to a stop after driving 10 miles the most , the car will not turn on again for about 20 minutes.at some point i rocked the car from side to side and after that it will start.also too the steering column seems loose . My shocks like it don't even have any

While leaving home from work, the vehicle started to shutter and fail. I managed to get home at a speed of 40mph since i noticed that at a higher speed, the vehicle would try to stall. The next day i tried to turn on the vehicle but it would not turn on. I called a certified mechanic and received instructions thru cell phone to shake a bit the cables to computer components and cables to distributor components. The vehicle turned on but with problems. I managed to drive to mechanic shop where the cherokee was left for testing and repairs. The diagnostics showed a faulty computer. The computer was replaced. About three months later, the vehicle stalled again at a cross road and turned off. A truck nearly struck me because i couldn't get out on time. The mechanic had to show up at the site and had some problems starting the cherokee. The diagnostics, another blown computer. The mechanic ordered another computer with upgrade (had to wait about a month) original crank shaft sensor was added. All seemed to work well until yesterday oct/2/2013 when i went out for a ride with my son and the cherokee stalled and turned off. The same symptoms as before. I have spent about $1,000.00 trying to get my jeep cherokee to run properly and now i'm afraid to take it out to the street. I have a family of 4 and i worry that the cherokee would fail me by stalling again at a crossroad causing a fatal accident to me or my family because of this electrical failure. All cables were checked for shorts but nothing solves the problem. I did some recall search but nothing official although some jeep grand cherokee users report the same problems for their 4.0l engine (my jeep cherokee is also 4.0l) coincidence? i love my cherokee but feel that i can't rely anymore on it as for safety. Had it for about 6 years without problems the first 5 years.

With time the blower motor wiring harness (which is too small for the amperage) in these vehicles invariably heats up and melts or burns.the melting of the harness and connector behind the blower speed selector switch in the dash and the burning of the switch itself occured in my vehicle, allong with the failure of the blower motor resistor, but in many vehicles the resistor is the first to burn and fail.i have looked at over 20 of these vehicles ranging from 1991 to 1996, and 30000 to 220000 miles, and every single one one them had these components melted and burned to the point of not being usable, and making one wonder how many other vehicles have caught fire and burned because of this fault.some of these vehicles also showed associated wires burned or melted in the steering column.an associated symptom is that the blower motor ceases to function, or (in the case of resistor failure, will usually work only on high speed).this shows a defect that may take time to manifest, but will always occur eventually in every vehicle unless the blower is never used.the blower switch to resistor wiring harness and switch connector/plug are not even available from dealers, but the switch itself and the resistor are available as aftermarket items.however, if replaced, these will fail too, unless the wiring in this circuit is replaced with heavier guage wiring or somehow protected from high amperage.as evidenced by hundreds of related complaints on internet forums, this is a serious problem that could result in fires, and potentially loss of life.luckily my fire was minor, did little damage and was quickly extinguished.however, i'm not sure how to resolve the actual problem properly, since oem replacement parts will sooner or later develop the same problems, and available aftermarket parts are not improved over the originals.

My mother-n-law purchased a 1996 cherokee, and the check engine light was on . So she took it to the emission place to get it checked and it failed the test, so she took the emission papers and the vehicle to the auto shop , and the mechanic stated that the car should have never been sold to her , so what should she do at this point.

While starting vehicle engine would not turn.service technician stated fuel pump needed to be replaced. Also, battery was drained. Problems had return. The replaced fuel pump failed and had to be repaired under warranty.

Battery replaced.*mjs

The vehicle ignited after being parked for approximately 2 hours.fire investigation pinpointed start in the main housing of the electrical, in the firewall.

Battery running low bracket broke in half, no reason for failure.

Refused repairs for recall repairs on alternator. *dsh

Alternator failed.

When driving at any speed with not warning the car dies. Please explain.

1. Electrical short under left side dash, main wire bundle going to fuse box rubbed against bolt and wore through wire causing a short. 2. Neutral safety switch gone bad. 3. Driver's side seat rail broke somewhere and seat rocks around. 4. Rear leaf springs have a negative arch in them causing rear to sag and wheels to rub with minimum weight in vehicle.dt

No summary listed for above vehicle.

Ignition key sticks.

Owner saw smoke coming from igniton area.notes circuits may be overloading. Cause unknown. Please provide further details.

Ignition switch failed.

1996 jeep cherokewhile driving with blower on (air) , steering column started smoking and melting the plastic housing. Cause was determined to be ignition switch was not heavy duty enough to handle blower motor current and the wires in the harness burned and melted. Wires and switch was replaced and 1 year later same thing happened again causing the interior to fill with smoke while driving and the wiring harness to burn up again. A mechanic at a dealer told me this was a not uncommon problem with that jeep model. I was told that the chrysler van used the same switch and harness and there was a safety recall for them but nothing was ever done about the jeep cherokee !!

Electrical short, door locks and also instrumental panel light continues to stay on.

Had parked vehicle. Was informed by another individual that vehicle was on fire. The fire dept called & extinguished flames. Had indicated it was faulty electrical wiring. [xxx]information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

An electrical inadequacy in the fan motor wiring in the steering column, caused wiring to melt.

Been having intermittent electrcal problems, then the steering column started smoking with a burning wires smelling.

Vehicle bursted into flame and exploded while parked outside of home.local fire departmentarrived and extinguishedfire. Also, fire department believed fire was due to an underhood electrical short. Dealer / manufacturer were notified. Feel free to provide any further details on this matter.

A fire started inengine compartment while driving 15 mph.dealer andmanufacturer were notified. Feel free to provide any further information.

Vehicle was parked in gear with engine turned off when it caught on fire inengine carpartment area. Cause unknown. Consuerwas waiting for further information.please provide further information.

The alternator circuit fuse to the power distribution center had an improper clamp load, causing a fire.there was a recall but this vehicle was not involved.please describe.

While vehicle was parked and not running, a fire ignited in the engine compartment, the adjuster and fire company believed the fire was started at the power distribution center, consumer asked dealer about the recall (95v193) that dealt with this component and was told this vehicle does not fall under the recall, after the fire the vehicle was a total loss.

Pdc fuse w/ fuse link recall repair needs to be done, however dealer not able to get part.

While driving, the tail lights and dashboard lights went out due to a short in the fuse system.

1. Electrical short under left side dash, main wire bundle going to fuse box rubbed against bolt and wore through wire causing a short. 2. Neutral safety switch gone bad. 3. While driving, i kept smelling melting plastic. It lasted a couple months before it went out. I looked to see several times to find it and never did. It wound up being the heater control switch and wiring harness melting. I decided to go to the junkyard to get the harness and switch and i found out from looking at 8 different jeep cherokees ranging from 1986 -1997 they all had the harness and switch melted in them. I then realized it was more than just my jeep that had this issue.

Computer failed.

The switch and harness melted from heat of the switch and burned the peice apart.

Electrical short in the passenger compartment resulted in fire that completely destroyed vehicle.fire started behind the dashboard, passenger side.electrical shortage, and burning smell was noted, which resulted in the driver pulling off the side of the road.after quick inspection under the hood, driver walked around the vehicle, at which point the interior dashboard burst into flames.

1996 jeep cherokee caught fire while driving on the westbound side of the ohio turnpike.ohio traffic crash report # 10-0774-91

At a slow roll while the vehicle is in gear the engine will idle down then die. It restarts immediately but will stall again unless more throttle is given. The problem is intermittent making it hard to pinpoint the exact cause.

The entire rear axle was replaced at the advice of jeep service. They claimed that the wheel bearings would not not seat in the axle as the "races" were worn beyond the point of holding them in. Because i needed the vehicle for my business, i had no choice but to have them repair it while they had it apart as i did not have time to do the job myself. It was a three week wait for parts as it was. Then i noticed the "musty" smell. Upon futher investigation i discovered the entire jeep was saturated under the carpets on both sides. Mold everywhere. No wonder my allergies were killing me. I've since gutted the vehicle and bleached the entire floor areas. I am now in the process of coming up with a solution to the problem so i can pass it on to other jeep owners. Chrysler has a bulletin out on a procedeure to clean the a/c drain but it does not work as it comes back each year. I've found that gluing nylon screening in the air intake under the hood keeps all of the debris that clogs this drain tube out of the heater box. Now i am working on a way to stop the water from running back into the dash area through the firewall where it drains out into the frame. Not one dealership would talk to me about this. I know that they know about it because of the bulletin. Also, i found that the "vents" behind the rear fixed glass on the cherokee have a small holding cup and a tube which the water that enters that area drains into, what i couldn't believe was that it drains into the rear of the vehicle, inside, which results in the entire rear of the vehicle becoming wet under the rear rug. This problem is solved by punching a hole through the floor and extending the factoy drain tube through the floor so the water drains outside the vehicle where it belongs.i am a car buff and pretty knowledgeable about repairs and i could not believe my eyes when i saw these design flaws. They are blatantly obvious.

While driving vehicle, the vehicle hit a bump in the road that caused the vehicle to make a loud noise.the dealer stated thatthe front engine mount bolt had sheared into the block causing the motor to drop.tsscc

All of a suden this very bad shaking problem has occured at about 50 mph.very unsafe.my cetified ase mechanic has been trying to find the problem for over a week now - no luck so far.

When getting out of the vehicle someone noticed fuel leaking from the vehicle.dealer determinedthat the water pumpbroke, and the dealer replaced the water pump.

Water pump went, causing the engine coolant sensor to go, tire rod needs to be replaced.told this wasn't usual unless a lot of mileage.could the mileage been altered?was this vehicle in an accident before i purchased it?

Engine fire.

Car has been well-maintained throughout ownership/no abuse of any sort on our part hastened the extensive repairs/overall repair bill was $1500.head gasket and assoc. Problems caused the water pump to seize up, the serpentine belt to slip off/the metal parts to be chewed up which went into the radiator causing the water lines and the radiator to be flushed as well.we are concerned about the extensiveness of this problem and the repair cost. We have contacted chrysler, but they said they will not proceed with a recall until nhtsa reports this problem to them.that file # is 8646708. We previously owned the same make and model(1988 jeep).we sold it at 200,000 miles--never having extensive repair problems such as this.

The water pump went out on way out of town.white smoke poured out from behind the jeep.we immediately pulled over and used our phone to call for help.we were told from a mechanic that it sounded as if the water pump went out.we waited for the jeep to cool off, then added water to the radiator.we were able to drive at 35 mph until we found a service station to pull over at.at that time the technician told us that it was indeed the water pump and there was no more that could be done that day (saturday-5:00p.m.).we got our vehicle towed back home to lafayette, la. The next morning and at that time the towing/service technician also said it looked as if the engine head gasket was blown.is that common for this vehicle with this milage?also, the brakes went out and we had them fixed a month ago at lafayette motors inc.could they have known about the water pump or is that impossible?also, was there supposed to be any warning as a check engine light?we got no warning, but the smoke pouringout.( dot number: )

While driving consumer heard fan hitting housing of the radiator. Also, vehicle would not go in 5 th gear or reverse. Motor had dropped about 3 inches. Motor mount bolts had broken.

Failure of the gas hose, the gas hose rubbed against the axle, causing a hole in the gas line.ak

Engine front motor mounts that screw into the side of the engine have sheared off.dealer has repairedproblem, but has no reason for the cause.

Consumer states that 3 grade 8 engine mount bolts on the left side have sheared off.

The shearing of the right engine mount to engine bolts could have allowed the engine to drop down onto the steering mechanism thereby causing loss of control. Due the the engine droppping down on the right side, the rear transmision mount was torn from the cross member and the transmission shifted right which could have caused a drive shaft disconnection. I don't know if the engine shift could have impacted the throttle linkage. This shearing of the 3 mounting bolts was not caused by normal wear and tear as the bolts failed simultaneously. It is possible that the bolts were not sufficiently hardened, or possibly over tightened at assembly causing premature failure. The vehicle was essentially disabled and the only thing keeping the engine in place was the distributor landing on the chasis mount hanger.

Mounts failed when turning car into parking lot.car is at dealer for repair now.sheared off bolts have to be drilled out.dt

I one day was on my way home from work one day and the check engine light came on and my car suddenly lost all back pressure i could not climb hills and started to smoke but before i could make it home my car began to smoke and eventually caught on fire leaving stranded with no vehicle in site i then called the police dept they had to put out. They said i was lucky to get out.

While driving about 5 to 10 mph heard a loud noise and pulled over to see what the problem was. Took the vehicle to the shop, and dealer noticed that the motor mounts had sheared off.

The right side engine mountbroke, causing the engine to drop out of place while driving.dealer has been contacted.

I crossed a railroad track at approximately 15 mph and came to a stop approximately 1 block away.as soon as i applied the accelerator, a loud bang and the sound of "dragging a muffer" occured.i immediatley pulled over and discovered that the shroud around the primary fan was broken into many pieces.i took the jeep to the dealer the next day they were open (occured on a saturday) and was told that the 3 bolts securing the right engine mount to the block had sheared causing the engine to fall several inches.this requires removing the engine to drill and tap the three holes to install a new bolts.diamler-chrylser is willing to pay for the bolts but not the $1000 labor.the jeep has never been off road and maintained excellently.

On the first occasion the motor mount bolts brokeand the side of the engine collapsed downward.due to the collapse the fan moved down and it hit the fan cover.when the motor mount collapsed it chipped away at the surface of the engine block.the second time the motor mount bolts came out completely and the engine fell to the side again this time wedging fan into the radiator.the first time the dealership repaired the motor mounts, but obviously did not do a good enough job, in order the keep the motor mount secure.

All 3 bolts that hold motor mounts to block broke off while driving, causing engine to drop or fall. Consumer is requesting manufacturer compensate him for damages and also car rental the he had to endure.

Upon hitting a bump on an interstate highway, i noted unusual sounds coming from the undercarriage of my 4-wheel drive vehicle.i immediately took this vehicle to a repair facility where it was discovered that three (3) of the six (6) bolts which attach the engine to the body of the vehicle had broken off, causing the engine to shift.the only reason that the engine did not fall off entirely is that a part of it caught on the chassis of the vehicle, preventing the engine from falling off entirely.the repair facility manager indicated that this type of mishap occurs regularly with jeep vehicles.

Three enginebolts sheared off, leaving the engine hanging low on the front end.this happened while traveling at 60 mph.dealer has replaced the bolts.

When driving vehicle hit a bump in which the enginemount bolts sheared off, causing the engine to drop several inches, resulting in the vehicle driving very rough. Consumer has contacted the dealer, dealer replacing parts. Please provide any further details.

Three engine mount bolts snapped at once while driving 55 mph on palisades parkway in new jersey.there was no warning (vibrating engine, noise, etc) before bolts snapped.according to my mechanic, this is the second jeep cherokee he has seen with this problem.since there is relatively low mileage on the jeep, and since i do not drive it off road, this should not be happening.the only reason the engine remained in the car was due to the distributar cap.it took 4 titanium drill bits to remove all three snapped bolts.were it not for my distributor cap, this problem could have cause a major accident on a major new jersey highway.

This particular model was suppose to come from the manufacturer with a plastic fuel tank.for some reason mine came with a metal fuel tank that corroded very quickly, beyond what would normally be expected for year and mileage.this corrosion led to the failure of the original fuel pump assembly and the failure of the replacement fuel pump assembly.the aaa person who towed my vehicle mentioned that he has towed a number of jeep cherokees with the same problem.

Fuel pump failed and was replaced on 9/5/02.picked up jeep and it broke down on the way home.was towed back to shop. Replaced fuel pump 5 more times in the past 2 months and have been noticing a strong petrol smell. Last time the mechanics told me to pick up the jeep it wouldn't even start and the petrol smell continued.now told by manager at the chrysler shop that an internal memo was issued in 1997 stating that 1996 cherokees had already started having problems with the fuel system, including faulty fuel pump systems and corroded fuel tanks.they said that they don't know what else to do other than replace the fuel tank at my cost.chrysler is holding true to character and insists that a jeep with so many miles (it's a '96 with only 58k miles) will have lots of problems.they do not seem to think it is strange that such a memo was issued detailing corrosion in the tanks of a high percentage of '96 jeeps only one year after manufacturing date.am worried about the smell of fuel in the car and safety in the event of a side impact accident.dt

I own a 1996 jeep cherokee and the sheet metal that connects the drivers seat to the adjustable track under the seat is tearing and coming lose.i feel that this is a extreme safety hazard which could lead to an accident and further increased injury during that accident when the seat becomes disengaged from its anchoring points.while the jeep is 7.5 years old, i am only 5ft 10in195lbsand do not think that the metal should be tearing.this being a safety issue i felt i should contact jeep before taking action myself so if necessary jeep could have the vehicle inspected and see if they had any concerns that needed to be dealt with. I have contacted jeep staff from a local dealership all the way up to susan at chrysler corp customer service (incident # 12175350) without luck in having my safety related issue addressed.

The driver's seat cushion frame broke at the welds.this caused the front mount of the cushion frame to fracture.there was no way of knowing the welds had fractured until the lower mount finnally gave out.i was lucky that this happened when i just got into the jeep.if i had been driving down the freeway, and the seat broke, i would have lost control.i went the my local jeep dealership, showed them the broken seat.there was nothing they could, but were willing to order the part.of which there were only three available in the nation.i tried to locate the part used on the national web of salvage yards.on every jeep of this year at the salvage yard, the front driver's seat was already missing.i believe this is a safety issue and should be looked into.i still have the broken seat cushion frame for further analysis.i just wonder how many accidents this problem has caused, and were blamed onto something or someone else?thank you for reading and considering this note.

I purchased this used vehicle in march 1999 . I have been back to the dealer about this problem 3-5 times . I've even come out of my pocket for the expensive of a new seat because the dealer told me the seat was considered cosmetic and not warranty covered. As it stands right now ,the dealership is supposedly waiting on instructions from chrysler about the specs for my seat. This has been going on for over 5 months .the seat is leaning dangerously to the right and it feels as if it is cracked

The front left corner of the drivers seat has broken loose from the adjustment slide.this causes the seat to tilt back when accelerating.the metal is torn from around the bolt.the bolt is still intact.the upper left door hinge is also coming loose from the body.the weld that secures the hinge to the body is failing.i contacted the local dealer (not the one who i bought the car from) and the service manager told me that he had not seen these problems before.since it is out of warranty he suggested i take it to a body shop.the fellow at the body shop informed me he has seen quite a few door hinge failures.he even had a cherokee in the shop with the same problem.he also said the seat failure is not uncommon.i feel these are safety issues and the manufacturer should at least reimburse part of the cost of repair, if not fix it at no charge.the seat in particular is dangerous because if the other side breaks, i'll be laying down trying to drive!

Getting into my 1996 jeep cherokee the nut which secures the drivers lower seat cushion frame to the seat adjuster pulled through the cushion frame.i am the original owner of this vehicle and it has never been in an accident and has 88932 miles on it.i feel this is a safety issue.if this vehicle is in an accident the forces which would need to be resisted would far exceed those a person could apply getting into the vehicle.therefore, i feel this is obviously either a design problem or a manufacturing problem.i called 1-800-992-1997 and talked to their representative who said that if this was a manufacturing defect the vehicle is out of warranty, i.e. I have to pay to get this fixed.for safety reasons this must be fixed, do i use their products which might have a problem?are there any other reports of this problem? if there are any other reports of this happening add another one to the list.

Weld busted on seat on the back part as well as the piece that connects to front left section of the seat.

The front seat frames are not made strong enough, frame welds broken, bolt pulled through, other frame cracks. I have heard of other seat failures,in jeep xjs, talked about on internet jeep list-serves. Seat was held on by only 2 points. If one more mounting had broken, the seat would have fallen into the back seat area.

Underside of front seat (metal rail connecting to tracks) broke suddenly near retaining bolts on both front connections.metal was flimsy (1/8 in or so) and did not appear to be reinforced against shear (up/down) stress at connection point to accommodate seat motion when drivers got into/out of vehicle.i was just getting in to go to work when it failed, but it could just have easily happened in traffic or at a traffic stop.

Jeep is the only 4 wheel drive vehicle designed without rear headrests.

When drivingvehicleand parking it a stron godor was coming from vehicle.fuseshorted out. Whenfuse was taken out of vehicle odor went away. Contacted dealer, and dealer stated it waspower adjustingseat module that blewout.

While accelerating from a stop one of the attachment bolts holding the front driver seat to the slide rails tore through the sheet metal on the left front attachment point. Upon removal of the seat, broken welds were found on the right rear of the frame and part of the frame was cracked.

The driver's seat frame broke away from the floor, making the seat inoperable.

I was driving on a slick surface, as it was raining, lightly.the person driving in front of me stopped short at a yellow light and i applied my brakes.my brakes failed and i crashed into the vehicle, my airbag deployed, and my front end was smashed.i was told it was a total.my brakes should have done what they were supposed to do - work.

Automatic adjusters are not sufficient in design to keep the rear brake drums adjusted properly, causing extreme pedal pulsation, and causing most braking onto front brakes, resulting in overheating and warping of the rotors.

I had the jeep dealer replace the front rotors on my 96 jeep cherokee country per the recall from chrysler. Within 20k miles the rotors were severely warped, hot spotted and had small cracks in several places on both sides of each rotor. When they were turned,"soft" spots were revealed in the metal and both rotors - even when turned down all the way down to the minimum thickness. They were deemed unsalvageable and i had to get another new set less than a year after recall replacements were installed.the incident date is approximate. I will need to find the receipts to know the exact dates.ts

1. Early this year, just after the new year holiday, '09, our '96 jeep cherokee (152k in excellent condition) began shaking or wobbling violently at speeds between 52 to 56 mph. On inquiring in a handful of web sites on the internet about this problem i learned that this is an extremely common problem with a tremendous amount of jeep cherokee owners and owners of other jeep models in a broad range of manufacture dates between '86 and as recent as '05. Also learned that this dangerous condition is commonly referred to as the "death wobble" or "death shake". Additionally, in my internet research, many jeep owners attempting to remedy this problem have taken their vehicles to professional mechanics including chrysler-jeep dealer/service centers to have the problem resolved, spend hundreds, in some cases well over a thousand $, only to have their vehicle returned with no improvement in the wobblecondition. 2. With our jeep, this wobble has not subsided. It happens on every occasion when driving on the highways while merging into traffic as we accelerate up to the 55 mph range. Upon acceleration, at approximately 51 to 52 mph a vibration begins, then upon accelerating at 53 to 55 mph the vibration becomes a violent wobble to the extreme that we have had instances when we had to decelerate down to approximately 35 mph or less in order to regain control while on the highway. If there is a saving grace out of this problem, it is that we can accelerate out of the wobble by getting beyond 55 mph as quickly as possible, but in phoenix highway driving, this is not always a possibility.though' not in every instance as during acceleration, the same condition exists @ 55 during deceleration as we exit the hi-way.3. Thus far, as we've read and heard of so many jeep owners spending hundreds of dollars at a prof. Auto repair center with no resolution, the possible remedy, and avoiding highway driving as much as possible.

The steering gear to my 1996 jeep cherokee completely came off the frame rail while my wife was driving. Luckily she was only going about five miles per hour. What had happen is that the three bolts that hold the steering gear to the frame rail broke off.

Cherokee began to shake very violently on several occasions recently after hitting minor bumps at 55 mph. Shaking would not stop or even subside until car was pulled over. Shaking so violent it caused an exhaust leak. Never an issue until recently - several recent incidents.

Steering box leak.

While driving on the interstate highway at about 65 to 75 mph vehicle began to shake in the front end so severely we had to slow completely down and pull to the side of the road and to a stop completely.the jeep is not safe to driveand i have read of other incidents that they have named it the death wobble.it could have made us flip over and we could have died in a roll over.this has happened to us before and we thought it was the shocks, but that has evidently not fixed the problem.it appears from what we read and have experienced that this is a problem in the front end and needs to be addressed by the manufacturer.

The contact owns a 1996 jeep cherokee. The contact stated that while driving approximately 40 mph over a pot hole, there was a sudden loss of steering control. The contact was able to regain control and continued driving. There was a recall under nhtsa campaign id number 97v069000 (steering) however, the vin was not included. The contact was a certified mechanic, he noticed a crack in the frame on the driver's side near the steering gear box. The contact planned to repair the vehicle himself. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure.the approximate failure mileage was 146,000.

Was driving about 60 mph on the washington dc beltway when the front end of the vehicle began to shake violently.subsequently diagnosed as the "jeep death wobble".

While traveling a bolt from the steering box sheared off.the steering box fell causing the vehicle to lose all steering.due to the fact that there was no restraint on the steering gear, the steering wheel turned too far, breaking the clock spring which caused a total failure of the cruise control and the air bags. *sc

This is the second time i have had water leakage from under the dash onto the driver's side floor soaking everything.the occurence was 5/2/03, problem fixed at dealer (antwerpen, baltimore) for $766. Now less than a year later the same problem is occuring.i am due to take iit in next week, how much do you want to bet the problem will be diagnoised as leaking in a different place so they won't have to honor the orginial repair warranty. This is almost a given.first of all this problem should not be happening at all.there obviously is a structural problem with the truck when itwas made.i have also read several compliants from other owners and jeep/chrysler refuses to fix the problem.i do not call this customer service at all expecially when it is the second time around.

Water leaking in by the back tail light on drivers side and also in the front floor on drivers side

This is the 3rd time i am complaining about a water leak in my 96 cherokee driver side floor. The problem started 1 year ago and i have spent a over $900 to have it fixed by the dealer (antwerpen, baltimore, md 21228). Since this is the 3rd occurrence in one year, i think the problem is a structural defect and that chrysler should stand behind it and fix it.it goes back to antwerpen on 4/5 for another go around.i concept is they are staling and waiting for the warranty on the 1st repair to run out, but sorry this isn't going to happen, even it i have to take it there weekly until somebody fixes it properly.

The tack weld that holds the hinge side of the door toframe of the jeep, over time became looser and looser. I realized the door didn't seem to fit as tightly, but i didn't appreciate how much it corroded until it collapsed, totally separating that section from the body of the car. The covered hinge is still holding the door in place, but without the uncovered hinge bracing the door, the door closes, but during driving-gusts of wind can separate the top of the door framing the window from the car.

This complaint is for a 1996 jeep cherokee sport.it is a 2-door vehicle with 4 wheel drive. The engine mount studs sheared off between the engine mount and the engine.this is the second time that this has occurred.the first incident occurred while the vehicle was still under warranty and the dealership cured the issue.the event took place on the bay bridge between oakland, ca and san francisco, ca.the second event took place on a busy street in memphis tennessee.i drove over an area that looked like the city had done some street work and had filled the area back in with asphalt.the divet from this work was insignificant and created a few inch difference between the old street concrete and the new asphalt fill and there was no edges.the repair work was curved.my speed was less than 5 miles an hour.the bolts sheered off on theright engine mount and the engine and transmission shifted to the right.this vehicle is has a manual transmission and the shift caused me to not be able to shift into 3rd - 5th gear and reverse.the engine is stock and no aftermarket add-ons have been added to the engine.i feel that these incidents have occurred due to poor engineering or inferior parts were used.

All of a suden this very bad shaking problem has occured at about 50 mph.very unsafe.my cetified ase mechanic has been trying to find the problem for over a week now - no luck so far.

November 13,1998nhtsa,i orignally thought that the right side motor mount had failed.i brought the vehicle to my mechanic for repair.my mechanic informed me that the motor mount looked good(actually brand new), though the bolts for the right side mount bracket had snapped off in the block. The right side motor mount bracket bolts snapped off in the engine block?i worked for 5 years at various dodge dealerships and i have been driving and working on vehicles for 23+ years and i have never heard of the bolts for the motor mount bracket snapping off in the block.i called chrysler (guy molina) and informed them of the problem, file # 5272069.i asked if there was a recall for this problem, chrysler said no.although vehicle is out of warranty, they would assist in the cost of the repairs as long as regular maintenance on that part had been done.i called the jeep dealers(6) in the plainfield nj phone directory.i asked the service departments if they had come across this type of problem.five of the six said they were familiar with this type of problem.i asked the service personnel at the dealership, if i had brought the vehicle in for service would they have checked these bolts, the answer was no, it is not a maintenence check list item.i should not have to pay for these repairs as the bolts mentioned should not fail.these bolts are installed with lock tight, the are not meant to fail or be removed and should last for the life of the vehicle.my last chrysler product was a 1988 dodge dakota, i could have made commercials with where i took that vehicle and never broke a motor mount or any other part on that truck.when i sold that truck it had 112,000+ miles and it was still going strong.the jeep is driven by my wife, back and forth to work, we also use the jeep to tow a pop-up trailer.it has only been in four wheel(high) in snow or heavy rains.i cannot remember if we ever had it in four wheel(low).this vehicle has not been mechanica

We bought an imported right-hand drive jeep from postal pete, galena il, for a mail route.this is not safety maybe: 1. The oil pressure guage, instead of being repaired in the dash, they added an auxillary oil gauge below the dash, which makes it impossible to safely look at the gauge.2. The odometer/speedometer unit doesn't measure correctly i think. 3. The lights on the dash & console don't work.because of the takata recalls, i looked at your site.when we complained with the dealer their attitude was tough you paid for it.also the rear end was bad. My husband went back before he left il for fl.they excused it saying it was tires.my husband knew they were lying (he does work on vehicles for us).we ended up having to replace the rear end.this complaint is more about the importer postal pete than it is about the vehicle.they should not be allowed to do this to customers.also they required a check in advance, thereby making it so we could not refuse the vehicle because they had our money.not nice people. Dis-honesty. I retired dec. 2011.i don't remember purchase date. You require something.picked up 11/02/10 reg. 12/07/2010 thank you.alicia
