The contact mentioned that the air bags had a delayed deployment. A police report was filed. The contact sustained some broken ribs and injuries to the neck, which required medical attention. The vehicle was towed to a salvage yard. The vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign numbers: 99v340000 (service brakes, hydraulic) and 95v057000 (air bags). The contact owns a 1995 jeep cherokee. The contact was driving 20 mph when a child ran in front of the contact's vehicle. In an attempt to avoid crashing into the child, the contact swerved and crashed into a ditch. One of the tires ruptured and the air bags also deployed. The air bag struck the contact in the face, causing injury to the contact's eye. The contact was able to replace the tire with a spare and drive the vehicle home. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer. The manufacture was not contacted. The failure mileage was not available and the current was 240,778.

The second impact, caused driver to hit her chin and neck on the steering wheel; driver was stunned and was able to get some assistance. Police arrived and driver went to the doctors.

I was leaving my parking space in the second line of cars and was proceeding to move forward and then to make a right hand turn. As i placed my hands, my left hand at noon and my right hand at 6 and just initiated the turn, i heard a 'click' that came from the steering column. At that point the air bag deployed causing me to turn left instead of right and then into the first row of cars. The impact forced my hands off the wheel and the position of the car from turning right to a left. As i was propelled forward the air bag dropped and i hit my chin and neck on the steering wheel because the air bag was down. Luckily i had my seat belt on.

Dear sirs,i have discovered a very dangerous electrical hazard that is occurring on all the 1990's jeep cherokee se models. On the 4.0 liter 242 cubic inch models, the dashboard switch that controls the airflow after only a few years of use shorts out melting and causing a severe danger problem. When this brown plug melts it also shorts out the 30 amp fuse that is connected to this area. After investigating several of these same models it is a dangerous design fault that needs to be addressed. Can you please take some corrective action before someone gets injured or killed from this?the next email will show an example of two different 1990's jeep cherokee's with several pics and both vehicle's v.i.n.# information.my 1995 jeep was purchased brand new by my late father and after 23 years of use it only has 113k original miles on it. This jeep remains a strong garage kept o.e.m. Matching numbers #3 car not a #1 concours. I am afraid if i use the switch sooner or later it will catch on fire as a result of this flaw design. I have every maintenance receipt including the original sales sticker and all documents from its birth in 1995. The vehicle since birth has had zero modifications done to it and has been kept in it's original condition just as it rolled off the assembly line in 1995.on june 10, 2018 at 9.15 pm e.s.t. I spoke to a customer care jeep rep at 877-426-5337 who did issue a case # for this of 345-103-88. She did advise it will be sent up thru the company's chain of communication. I am hoping jeep usa will take note of this and follow up as i do not want to loose my jeep that is and has been a keepsake sacred family heirloom that must be passed on. I can only hope and pray that nobody else has already had serious injury or death as a result of this design flaw.

Smoke starts coming from steering column, the vehicle will shut off while in motion.radio would turn on when vehicle was shut off.the windows would not work or lock.the last time it started to smoke the underside of steering column melted.
I have a 1995 jeep cherokee.when replacing the environmental control light, i noticed that the connector the blower switch was burnt to a crisp.i proceeded to replace the connector by obtaining a connecters from a salvage yard.i was able to obtain several connectors, however these connectors were also burnt and melted.i am curious if whether a defect complaint has ever been logged concerning the a/c, heater blower switch or the connector.
While starting the vehiclebattery blew up, cauising the acids to spill onto the engine. Replaced battery and problem occurred again.dealer cannot determine problem. While replacing battery it was noted that the negative cable jump was somewhat loose causing possible arcing, the weather was very hotand engine area and hood were very hot, explosion caused battery to separate and may have loosened clamp.
I purchased a replacement battery for my wife's car from napa, manufactured by exide.i placed the battery on my front seat, and left it there overnight to return the next day.sulfuric acid leaked from the battery and ruined the seat upholstery.the manufacturer claims it is not defective after performing a pressure test on it.do i have any other recourse, or are their findings final??as the unit was never put into use, i feel the manufacturer has to have some responsibility in this matter.are batteries intended to leak sulfuric acid at any time after manufacture, either in service or delivery??please advise me regarding my situation and whether i have any basis for my claim.thank you.

On the evening of 11-15-99, my jeep cherokee sport would not stay started, we check all the fuses which were o.k., tilted the steering column up and down, the jeep started when the steering column is in the down tilt, i do remember a light smell of electricalthe morning of the 15 of november, since then i had a friend of a friend contact someone over in the chrysler corporation to have them contact me. Today is friday, 11-19-99 i have not heard from any one over atthe chrysler corporation. I contacted the friend of the friend over at chrysler this morning. He forwarded my concerns onto someone else.this morning 11-19-99 , the very strong smell of hot electrical wiring was present in the interior of my jeep when i opened the door this morning (11-19-99), after letting the jeep idlefor 10 minutes, the heat source/smell seems to be coming from the lower plastic steering column under the ignition switch,very hot to touch, and partially melted, i am very, veryconcerned for the safety of my family. I contacted the service department as to where i will be taking my jeep for service can not get me in until 11-23-99. Please advise me as to what i should do.thank you very much. Suzie peterson.

On 9/30/03 wiring terminations at ignition switch in steering column failed. Evidence of previous arcing and deformation of wiring, connector, and plastic cover over steering column were present. Dealership was aware of this problem happening as they have seen it before and have prescribed a fix for the situation that deviates from replacing the entire wiring harness. If this is the case they there must be quite a few cherokees that are out there that are having this problem. I my self have noticed quitea few burnt up interiors at local salvage yards where i do business my self. Immediate attention to this issue before some one dies in a fire caused by electiral wiring inside of the steering column should be given.i have contaced dcx and they gave me claim numnber 11700403 for my complaint within there organization
Dash indicator lights failed.

On two separate occasions while driving one time on the hwy at 60 mph & another at 20 mph in a school zone heard a loud noise like a blown out tire & the fan blade hitting the fan guard.

While driving at 25 mph, consumer hit a small bump (culvert under road) and it sounded like a large pot hole had been hit. Looking in the rear view mirror, the driver saw (and later retrieved) a bolt bouncing down the road. Engine sounded deeper initially, and then a louder knocking sound started. The driver stopped and noticed that the fan was hitting the shroud and called a wrecker. The bolts to the motor mount had broken and the engine had dropped several inches. The problem was fixed.16 days later the top weld on the driver's-side door hinge broke away, leaving only the bottom hinge holding the door in place.
Three bolts to the engine mount broke while on freeway, andengine popped. Also,cooling fan cut transmission hose so that fan could not turn, and car overheated. Consumer had to exit immediately, and almost had an accident.

I heard there had been problems with the bolts connecting the engine to the motor mount shearing off, and was told i should check for a recall.the car was not under any extraordinary stress, but the engine fell when i hit a bump in the road.the repair of the bolts alone was expensive, plus there was damage to the casing around my clutch fan and minor fluid leaks as a result.

While driving my jeep cherokee last friday, april 6, 2000, i heard a sudden and drastic change in engine noise. The three bolts securing the front passenger side engine mount to the engine block had sheared off in the engine block. The engine had shifted so far in the engine compartment that the fan blades had struck the fan housing and seized up, breaking one of the blades off. Since friday, i have done some research on the problem on the internet, and found many people who have experienced the same problem with their cherokees - the passenger side engine mount bolts shearing off under normal use.what is being done about this issue? i have been in contact with other jeep owners who have used this form to submit a complaint. The dept. Of natural resources, wa state has a fleet of just over 100 units of this description both 2 and 4 wheel drive. The date of manufacture ranges from 3-94 to 8-98. We have experienced approx. 20 cases of this defect with the vehicles in the earlier models. The dealership / manufacturer denies there is a problem. The mount retaining bolt breaks allowing engine movement and possible damage to other components.
While driving at 25 mph, consumer hit a small bump (culvert under road) and it sounded like a large pot hole had been hit. Looking in the rear view mirror, the driver saw (and later retrieved) a bolt bouncing down the road. Engine sounded deeper initially, and then a louder knocking sound started. The driver stopped and noticed that the fan was hitting the shroud and called a wrecker. The bolts to the motor mount had broken and the engine had dropped several inches. The problem was fixed.16 days later the top weld on the driver's-side door hinge broke away, leaving only the bottom hinge holding the door in place.

I have now had to replace the motor mounts on my 1995 jeep cherokee 3 times in 4 years. Each time i was driving less than 40 mph and on paved roads in good condition. Fortunately, no injuries have occurred at this point, but the possiblilty is there. I have contacted the nhtsa site which contains many other reports (<100) of this exact same problem occurring to other people, in many cases happening multiple times like my case. There is obviously a design flaw that is casuing this problem.

This is a safety issue with this 95 cherokee, the three mount bolts for the engine mount have sheared twice in the last four years, i read in the newspaper a lady wrote in who had a similar problem and lost control of her vehicle. I believe a research of jeep's inventory and service records for these bolts i wll show a high level of activity that should warrant a recall to install stronger bolts. These bolts could fail in a intersted crusing scenario and seriously injury or kill the occupants. The dealer said this is an ongoing problem with certain cherokees. I believe jeep has swept this serious problem under the rug, and now the vehicle is out of production, but a huge number are still on the road. Over all this vehicle has been one of the best we have ever owned, except for this dangerous safety issue that until has not been rectified by the factory. Fyi, the second set of bolts installed the dealer went with non-oem bolts due to a lack of confidence in the jeep bolts called out in the parts catalog! regards,george kaseydt

Put in shop again, dealership said they replaced the brain in the computer and replaced 3 motor mounts and said this would cure the problem.after that have had to have in shop at least once a month with miss getting worse and occuring on accleration.vehicle jumps up to 10 to 12 times when this occurs.dealership now says does not know what is wrong and is going through the wiring.a flight recorder was hooked up and dealership said the reading was clean even though vehicle malfuncioned 3 times.also a/c keeps malfunctioning and blowing warm air.dealership said was a loose wire but problem still occurs.

I recently purchased a 2015 jeep cherokee with only 14,500 miles on it. I noticed that the transmission did not shift properly. The dealer reprogrammed the software that week. A few days after pick up, i noticed the same problem: down shifting, not shifting, transmission reving up and not engaging when the vehicle is in motion.
While driving at any speed without any prior warning and trying to switch gears the vehicle will lose speed, and even when trying to pick up speed the vehicle will slow down.

Consmuer put the jeep in park and got out to put something in the back hatch leaving the drivers' door open. Jeep popped out of gear going in reverse at a very high speed. Consumer was knocked down by door and front wheel ran over consumers' foot and part of leg. Jeep continued to roll in reverse until it smashed into a building.

Said they had same type transfercase. They fixed other jeeps by replacing transfercase. Also notice slight rear wobble when accel and thumping noise. U-joints ok. Got new wheels, aligned & balanced & new steering dampener(old one leaking). Problem barely noticable but was still there. More noticable around feb. Contacted dealer at that time. Said they would call if found a solution but hasn't called yet. Not under warranty anymore. Dealer said expensive to fix and hard to find parts.

The front differential froze up after vehicle on road long distance.ttconsumer states vehicle seems to drag, there is a grinding noise and wheels grab, wheels grabbed while going up a hill and on flat road after driving long distance.

Driving 1-95n to baltimore,heard a clunk as if something had hit car from beneath, lost 5th gear. Got off at next exit, lost reverse gear in parking lot of hotel. Next morning tow operator started car, enormous clattering, severed piece of plastic had jammed radiator fan. Towed to aaa approved garage. They temorarily fiked car by holding engine up with a chain. Got back to boston. Ideal garage, somerville ma identified the problem. The attachment of engine to engine blocked has failed. The engine was attached on left side and angled downwards, making 5th and reverse unattainable. This is the second jeep cherokee, same year that he had seen in a week - same problem. Approx.6 months after purchasing the vehicle noticed when hitting a slight bump in the road the engine would jump. Not a constant problem but happens at unexpected times. At first thought it might be transmission but after tech from dealer checked seemed to think might be coil distributor and plug wires and clean throttle body. Problem continued then was told was pick up plate in transaxel. Miss in engine continued and started getting worse. Put in shop again, dealership said they replaced the brain in the computer and replaced 3 motor mounts and said this would cure the problem.after that have had to have in shop at least once a month with miss getting worse and occuring on accleration.vehicle jumps up to 10 to 12 times when this occurs.dealership now says does not know what is wrong and is going through the wiring.a flight recorder was hooked up and dealership said the reading was clean even though vehicle malfuncioned 3 times.also a/c keeps malfunctioning and blowing warm air.dealership said was a loose wire but problem still occurs.

After my accident back in april 2000 exiting the express was i was slowing due to a red light, a car from behind rear ended my 1995 chrysler jeep .at the time i had not related the failure of the seat belt control latches to anything.i knew my body had gone forward i didn't think anything of it at the time.until my, daughter later died from skull damage.i was 5 months into my first pregnancy about two months later the baby died.the sonogram showed skull damage.i still at the time had not but the connection to the seat belt being unsecured latches, i had notice it but really wasn't concern at the time.i later filed a complaint with daimler chrysler concerning the seat belt they gave me a case number however, i never heard from them.then i came across the case where the lady was suiting over the seat belts, however the attorney did not want to take the case at the time.i was in florida and they werefrom texas.nor could i find anyone who would take the case to pursuit the daimler chrysler company at the time.the complaints with the seat belts where not so plentiful as they are now, i still feel to this day (serria) would be alive if the security of the seat belt harness where locking properly, my daughter would be alive today. My back would not have 2 disk out of place, and the need of back surgery.

Seatbelt gets caught up on sharp corner of guide causing belt to tear in several places.compressor of air conditioner makes loud squeel noise.both reported to jeep of ontario.air conditioner never fixed after 4 reports to dealer in ontario.seatbelt fixed at my expense with the dealer claiming belt's damage caused by slamming in door, i have the belt assembly showing no evidence of being slammed in door; but evidence of being torn by sharp point in guide.

While on vacation we suddenly lost our front brakes on both sides of our jeep cherokee sport.when a local mechanic looked at it, he discovered that both front rotors had rusted and completely separated from themselves.the flat larger part that the brake pads clings to, were not attached to the smaller part that the wheel is hooked to.luckily we were able to stop the vehicle with the emergency brake and were unhurt.the mechanic said that he had never seen both rotors go at the same time.upon questioning the dealership where we bought the vehicle, they relunctently said that there was a recall, but people were not notified.after searching your sight, i found such a recall, but for older models.our's is a 1995 jeep cherokee and we could have been killed by such a safety hazard.we are currently trying to come to some resolution with the dealership, regarding our repair bill.why are owners not being notified of these safety hazards?? please update the recall to extend to newer vehicles!!please contact us with further information.thank you.shanon albee

The contact owns a 1995 jeep cherokee. While driving 20 mph, the brakes failed to respond when the pedal was depressed. As a result, the vehicle crashed into the rear of another vehicle. The contact mentioned that the air bags had a delayed deployment. A police report was filed. The contact sustained some broken ribs and injuries to the neck, which required medical attention. The vehicle was towed to a salvage yard. The vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign numbers: 99v340000 (service brakes, hydraulic) and 95v057000 (air bags). I acquired this vehicle specifically because it had 4-wheel anti-lock brakes. A few weeks ago, for the first time, i had to perform a "hard brake" to avoid hitting three deer. Much to my surprise, i had "hard pedal"but virtually no brakes! i narrowly avoided oncoming traffic and limped into my driveway. Noone could understand how i could have hard pedal without brakes. (all relays proved to be okay.) i had the car towed to a local tire dealer to see if they could determine what was wrong. They were astonished to find that both rotors had separated from their hubs as the result of the hard brake. They advised that they thought it had to be a defect in the metal and advised me to take it to my local jeep dealer, cooper motors, in stevens point, wisconsin. The service manager at cooper motors was so astonished to see the separated parts, that he called all the service technicians to the counter to see the parts. However, most of them acknowledged that they had seen this before on a routine basis. If jeep rotor are separating from their hubs and causinig accidents, who would know? if it were discovered during a crash investigation, it would be assumed that it was the consequence of the accident, while, in fact it may actually be the cause! jeep's comments were to advise me that rotors were only warranteed to 10,000 miles; no mention that one should expect rotors to dis-attach!

The contact wasan automobile technician for thirty years.there was no warning or noise prior. Put brakes on this vehicle about a year or so ago.this was not something one could see happening. .the metal was so thin that after a period of time it just came apart and was just from normal braking.when it came apart apart it put all of the pressure on the other brake which wason one brake.this will cause the steering wheel to jerk and could cause the vehicle to flip.*sc.

Brought jeep into lawless for recall they said the rotors were ok on aug 28,2000.after 2 weeks and 400 miles the front left rotor split during a stop at intersection which made vehicle not stop. Luckily for my wife and daughter the other car was able to stop.the mechanic who inspected rotors 2 weeks prior should be reprimanded.

I have been having numerous problems with front end, tried numerous cures, and am still having same problem. While driving, the front end will begin to shake, when i slow down to 30-35mph, it will go away. It is not a constant problem, but will happen at least once a day. I have replaced front rotors due to excessive vibration while driving. The dealer has replaced several times, had an independent change this time. Now am experiencing a constant noise from front end.

Driving over a speed bump at about 5 mph. Passenger side engine mount bolts sheer off the block. I was able to pull out one bolt, but the two outside bolts are still stuck in the block. I will try to extract these tomorrow. All that is required to repair the problem is 3 bolts.

The fact is that there are hundereds of cherokees out there with this rust and in the event of a crash the structure of the unitiezed body will not be as ridged because the floor is basically separated from the frame. Obviosuly some corrosion might be expected over a 5 year period but due to excessive moisture leaks and the heat/cool cycle of the catalytic converter and exhaust under the passenger side floor pan the corossion on the passenger side in even worse. A few weeks ago the drivers side door on my 1995 jeep cherokee started to be difficult to close. It quickly got worse and then i noticed that the top door hinge had separated from the frame. It looked like the manufacturer's weld had failed. Soon the entire upper hinge came off and the door was hanging on by the lower hinge only. I called the daimler chrysler customer service and was provided a copy of their tech service bulletin 23-030-01, which provided dealers with instructions on how to fix this defect. I took it to the local dealer and 2 separate local body shops. All the technicians that i talked to expressed disbelief that chrysler-jeep had not issued a recall. They had repaired many similar defects previously. I believe it is a safety concern because the door is impossible to secure when the defect starts and could possibly fall off the vehicle whicle on the highway. Chrysler customer service said they would not reimburse me for the cost of repair, which was $280.00. I think chrysler-jeep should be forced to recall and pay for repairs to this defect. One hinge of driver's side front door is completely detached, the other is coming loose. I understand that this has been a recurring problem in this model year of the cherokee. At moderate to high speeds, the door shakes and rattles, and the nise is deafening. Door also leaks now when it is raining, there now is water damage to the inside of the vehicle as a result of this failure. Also, i have been forced to prop up the tailgate door with a broom handle since that piece failed, this handle could easily become dislodged during loading and severely injure anyone standing beneath the door.

I have been having numerous problems with front end, tried numerous cures, and am still having same problem. While driving, the front end will begin to shake, when i slow down to 30-35mph, it will go away. It is not a constant problem, but will happen at least once a day. I have replaced front rotors due to excessive vibration while driving. The dealer has replaced several times, had an independent change this time. Now am experiencing a constant noise from front end.

Towing a horse trailer plus 2 heavy horses full fuel load. Vehicle sweaved out of control round a roundabout .damage was slight as vehicle jack knifed.the local jeep dealer informed me i had the early soft springs on the vehicle not recommended fortowing. I contacted jeep who informed me that jeep had stiffened the springs to prevent sagging leaf springs.and if i ordered a new part it would reduce the problem of unstable towing . I noted that the replacement spring has stronger clamps longer and stonger locating pegs.i asked if their had being a recall as the vehicle was not fit for purpose (uk law)if the original springs were inadaquate to prevent severe swaying .i was told i should have brought a1997 car or a diesel version introduced in 1995 in the uk which had being fitted with stronger springs .i asked the uk if they could find out why jeep had lowered the recommended "tongue wt" on the 1997 vehicleby 30 kgs was it because the earlier recommendations wer to high for the "soft springs to cope with no reply .i asked why the only difference between the 1995 and 1997 owners hand book was a longer trailer towing section including the addition of the words "strongly "sway from side to side ,why had they changed the warnings had theri being any reported accidents while towing on the "sagging springs" ..they now refuse to answer any more questions in the uk can you help in the us ?i believe if the uk 4.0 jeep is fully loaded to its makimum wt it will not be stabel due to the agreed fault that 1992/3/4/5 springs "sag due to early fatigue problems.
"rotational thumping" sound during accel from stop. Especially noticable during accel uphill from stop. Thumping sound until 15mph or so. Sound from below drivers side. Originally noticed problem mid to late last year. Dealer had other jeeps with similar problem. Said they tried replacing steering dampener, u-joints...etc but problem came back. Said they had same type transfercase. They fixed other jeeps by replacing transfercase. Also notice slight rear wobble when accel and thumping noise. U-joints ok. Got new wheels, aligned & balanced & new steering dampener(old one leaking). Problem barely noticable but was still there. More noticable around feb. Contacted dealer at that time. Said they would call if found a solution but hasn't called yet. Not under warranty anymore. Dealer said expensive to fix and hard to find parts.

I have a 1995 cherokee 4x4 "sport" model... I've managed to break at least 4 sets of motor mount bolts since i bought (new) the vehicle... I'm not saying that the vehicle is a lemon, but the motor mount bolts do have a certain citrus flavor to them... Up until the most recent incident, chrysler has been covering them as a waranty repair, so it has just been inconvenient and i have been willing to live with their design defect... This time, they say that since i had over 40k miles on the last set of bolts, then they would not cover them... Don't know how many miles i've been driving with them broken since the center one was still in there, so the engine did not drop down like it normally does after the bolts shear off... I only noticed it this time when i discovered that the radiator is leaking... I'm looking at a $800-900 repair for both items... When this last occurred, i called the chrysler service line and started up a "care" issue with them, giving them all the information that i had on the problem... They didn't seem all that concerned with finding the cause of the problem and since it had been less than 12 months / 12,000 miles since the last motor mount bolt replacement, they would cover it as a warranty repair... I suspect that chrysler believes that it is cheaper to just keep repairing the symptoms instead of determining the actual problem... Unfortunately, this time, they are making me pay for their design defect.
