Battery failed causing damage to the wiring to the brake lights due to corrosion.

The contact owns a 1991 jeep cherokee. While driving at various speeds and attempting to stop the vehicle, the contact had to depress the brake pedal with extreme pressure to stop the vehicle. When the contact filled the vehicle with brake fluid, the fluid leaked out quicker than anticipated. As a result, the manual braking system had to be used instead of the power assist braking system. The brake warning light illuminated. Also, the horn sounded without warning and the power steering seized. The failure recurred. The contact took the vehicle to a certified mechanic who diagnosed that the power assist brake unit failed and needed to be replaced. The power steering failure was not diagnosed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failures. The approximate failure mileage was 184,000.

My car had been parked and 30 minutes later after returning to my car the fire department was putting out an engine fire.still awaiting the fire department report.

While driving, the dash lights went out. I turned the dimmer control and the dash lights would only be on full brightness or off, there was no dimmer control. Approximately 60 seconds later we could smell something hot. Approximately 2 minutes later we noticed a glow coming from under the left side of the dash board. We were close to our home and turned into the driveway, at which time i was forced to open the driver's side window due to black smoke coming from the left air conditioning vent. I pulled up to the garage, shut off the ignition, pulled the hood release and exited the car. My wife got out of the passengers side and immediatly headed for the house to get water. I hurried into the garage to retrive a pair of pliersto pull the battery ground cable. As i exited the garage flames were visable above the dash inside the jeep. I popped the hood and pulled the ground cable off, by this time the flames were reaching the top of the windshield. I moved around to the drivers door and opened it as my wife arrived with a bucket of water and we were successful; in extinguishing the flames. Thereostat for the dash lights had shorted out and did not blow the fuse. The light switch became hot enough to ignite the plastic surrounding the main wiring harness above it, melting the air conditioner vent, the left side of the dash and burning the headliner and sun visor. Had we not been close to home i believe the vehicle would have burned completely as we would have had no means of putting out the fire.a fellow employee told me he had a similar experiance with a 1989 jeep cherokee. I have removed the dash and was able to determine the cause and would have it available if anyone would be interested in looking at the vehicle. Have there been any other complaints of a similar nature?

I was driving in freeway traffic on my way to work at 6:45am and was on the road for approx. 10 mins.i smelled a strong burning smell, then noticed dark black smoke coming out of the dashboard by the front window on the driver's side.by the time i was able to pull over to a safety zone, a fire had started and flames and melted plastic started dripping to the floorboard.within 20-30 seconds, the flames had engulfed the entire driver side and was shooting up from the ceiling of the car.i was able to get out and run up the embankment on the freeway.in this very short period of time, the jeep was completely engulfed in flames and the entire car burnt to the frame. Total time of visable smoke to fire in the dash was less than a minute.

The jeep cherokee equipped with the aw4 automatic transmission which is all auto vehicles manufactured since the begining of the 1987 model year have a serious design defect in the transmission that will cause unwanted and dangerous automatic downshifting into first gear from second gear at an unacceptable high rate of speed.if the operator has moved the shift lever into the 1-2 gear shift position for better control and engine braking and the vehicle speed drops below 28 to 23 mph the transmission will without warning abruptly downshift to first gear.if the vehicle is on wet, icy or gravel covered roads it will go into a skid condition usually with loss of vehicle control.when i took the vehicle into the dealer to have them fix the problem, they said they had never heard of the problem and contacted chrysler.chrysler replyed that this was normal operation as per its design.over the next year or two i contacted chrysler directly including their engineers.the said they were aware of the design defect, however not enough customers had complained about the condition to warrant them taking care of the problem.of course it is not mentioned in their operators manual, and if someone lost control they would probably not have a clue as to what had caused it.i then came up with electronic circuitry that could be incorporated in the vehicles transmission control unit that fixed the problem.i offered it to the company in 1992 so they could make it either available to their past customers and to re-design the circuitry into the new cherokees produced since that time.they declined the offer.the design change would not have cost them more than $10.00 per vehicle for retrofitting past vehicles and less than $5.00 per vehicle to incorporate the circuitry into newly manufactured vehicles.you can find more info and chryslers response to the problem at http://www.cherokee-jeep.comthank you.

The contact lost brake functionality while being operated on the highway and the abs warning indicator illuminated. The contact was able to stop the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to ryan auto mall (located at 1000 highway 55 e, buffalo, mn) where it was diagnosed that the pump motor assembly was defective and needed to be replaced. The contact stated that the vehicle was previously repaired per nhtsa campaign number: 96v260000 (service brakes, hydraulic), which stated that the component had a lifetime warranty. I replaced my abs pump motor on my 1991 jeep cherokee in october 2006. Mopar part number r2007515.the part has a lifetime warranty under nhtsa campaign number 96v260000. I have sent numerous submissions to be reimbursed and everytime they find some excuse not to pay. They claim it was repaired in 2001, i have the dealer invoice stating that abs actuator was replaced. Mopar part number r4746415, not the above mentioned pump. The last time i submitted my paper work in september. They claimed not to be able to find this recall despite me giving them the recall number both the nhtsa # and chrysler recall #702. This is getting ridiculous. Any help i can receive from you would be most advantageous. Thank you.

Letter from congressman hunter on behalf of constituent regarding abs brake issues on his 1991 jeep cherokee.the consumer stated the brakes failed and the dealer could not find the pump to repair the abs brakes. The consumer requested the to have the vehicle repaired or replaced. The consumer referenced recall #96v260000

My abs pump has failed, and chrysler is failing to comply with nhtsa recall #96v260000 having to do with the abs pump.the recall clearly states that "the brake actuator piston assembly and the pump-motor assembly which will have a lifetime coverage".i called the chrysler recall center today, and at 5:01pm pst, sasha told me that there is no warranty on that part, and i was denied help. The nhtsa recall clearly states otherwise.trying to find answers on the internet, i have found that other people are experiencing the same issue with chrysler denying and refusing service, because apparently this part can no longer be had.why is their direct conflict with the stated lifetime coverage on the recall? i also learned that last year chrysler was fined $105 million by the nhtsa for mishandling recalls. If the nhtsa allows chrysler to deny this, legal responsibility may fall on both parties, as i will be continuing with legal action.

Brake failure, when braking wheels will lock up at low speeds.tt

Thank you.

Abs system continually failing.

Anti lock brakes failed prior to recall.

The one problem i have had is with the abs not being able to stop. It happened early december 2001. It was replaced free of charge as it is under lifetime warranty. Thinking all is ok i drive my car and on march 30, 2002 my brakes again failed. Had it fixed up from the dealer and drove it about a mile only to have no brakes again. This is the 3rd time the part has been replaced. I believe it is a safety issue.****dims 11 ivoq entry posted after 12/12/02 cut-over to artemis****7650836.

When the jeep hits a hard bump the right rear bump stop will contact the brake fluid line on the passenger side. I had the jeep loaded and when i got home i looked under the jeep and i feel if the jouce bumper its the brake line hard enough it will cut off fluid to the brake on that side. That would cause partial loss of brakes and could kill me.

I recently installed new bumpstops on the rear of my jeep and noticed a decrease in braking ability.today while driving i had a sudden loss of braking power and rear ended another vehicle.while inspecting my braking system and my jeep for damage.i noticed that i had a rear brake line collapsed.i remember reading about recall 90v206000.it stated that "contact at full jounce may cause the brake tube to collapse and restrict the hydraulic brake fluid pressure to the left rear brake which affects the braking capability of the vehicle."this was quoted from this site.i read the documents that were linked, and even though my vin does not pull up the recall, which i have gone to a dealer upon buying my vehicle and had them make sure all recalls were performed.they did not say i needed the recall referenced.my jeep does meet all the other parts of the recall in terms of what vehicles were affected.
