Over the past six (6) months, the vehicle has stalled on the highway approximately 4 times.had to drift onto the shoulder, put vehicle in park to start car again.that is a very dangerous situation to be on an interstate traveling at a speed of 50 and above having to drift across lanes with absolutely no power.as of this past weekend, i started the car, the airbag light would not go off.the next day, the car was making a horrible noise and once again the airbag light was on.the noise sounded as if something was loose underneath the hood.the car sounded so horrible, i had it towed versus driving it to the shop.i got the bad news that the engine has no compression and needs to be replaced.the mechanic has no idea what went caused this.i will have to get another engine or let the mechanic break the current engine down to see what parts can be re-used.i read on another website that a few people had to have engines replaced on the 1998 jaguars for no apparent cause.this is ridiculous and no fault of mine.i have kept up the maintenance.i found this link which suggests possible engine failure causes http://www.jagservice.net/jaguar_v8_secondary_tensioners.htm.
I have had repeated problems with the electrical system on this vehicle.it has been serviced by two different dealers a total of 4 times for the same defects which still remain.the drivers electric seat occasionally moves both forward and back while driving moving you either away from the brake pedal or into the dash.the steering wheel which is tied into the same system sometimes refuses to move out of its retracted position against the dashboard.additionally, the rear doors won't open at all unless the driver first opens their own door or hits a central release button prior to either rear passenger touching their interior handles.up until now the manufacturer has been trying to repair this situation but has now changed their position to being "it's supposed to work thatway".this creates a very hazardous situation in the event of a front end collision where the driver is either rendered unconscious or the airbag deploys.in either case the rear seat passengers are trapped in a potentially burning vehicle.it also creates a very inconvenient situation every time a rear passenger tries to get out before the driver.in those instances, the car must be shut off and restarted several times to reset the system before the rear doors can be opened even from the outside.
Car has stalled on the highway while traveling approx. 65 mph. The car has been into the white allen jaguar dealership in dayton ohio and they have not been able to isolate the issue. Although, i have paid them on each occasion to clean out the throttle body screen. This past wekend i was on i-75 in cincinnati and it stalled nearly causing a serious accident when i had to trail across 4 lanes to reach the side of the road to pull off. I could have been seriously injured or killed. It was a horrendously frightening experience. Something must be done by jaguar to correct this problem. It seems to be rather widespread and of serious danger to the owner and others on the highway at the time the car stalls.
Vehicle has experienced multiple engine stallings while driving at highway speeds. *mron many occasions, the vehicle stalled and felt as if the fuel had been shut off.the ignition was turned off and the consumer restarted the engine. The dealer determined that the throttle body failed and performed tsb # 310-05.the ems relay was replaced, fuel injection relay, throttle motor relay, ignition coil relay, starter relay, fuel pump relay and both ignition positive. *scc
This is the 6th time this car has stalled at highway speed without warning. Prior submittal have been made to nhtsa (see odi 74783 and 76465). I consider this a serious safety issue. I cannot allow my wife to drive the car. Jaguar has made 5 attempts to correct the problem but has failed each time. On average i have sufferedthis safety related failure on average, every 261 days!**** dims 11 ivoq entry posted after 12/12/02 cut-over to artemis****769759.
Car stalled at high speeds from 44,000 until trade-in on sept 4 at 69,000 miles.luckily no one was ever hurt. However, we had expected to keep the car for longer as we did our last car of over 100,000.we kept taking it back to jaguar but they said it was not their problem but the throttle just needed to be cleaned.they even taught my husband how to clean the throttle.during the last 6 months we had the car, we had it to the jaguar dealer and two other independent repair places to try to fix the stalling. No one was able to fix it.after two more very bad scares of stalling at high speeds in two days, we felt we had no choice but to get rid of it before we (and others) were in a terrible accident.approximately 3 weeks later we received a recall notice that there was a throttle problem with our jaguar that caused cars to stall at high speeds and that they would repair it.we asked for reimbursement for all the repairs.jaguar said some were routine maintenance and the others were performed at independent repair centers so not covered.we think they should not only pay our bills for trying to fix the problem, but also should compensate us for having to trade the car in early when they knew the problem existed but had not tried to fix it for us or others having our model.
We have had repeated complete power failures while driving our jaguar xj8 - 1998.the power failures have occurred on the highway and have caused us to pull over to either the inside or outside lanes.have taken the car to the dealership: april 2001 - couldn't replicate the problem in the shop, but replaced the ecm.june 2001 - throttle was adjusted and they replaced 4 relays.jan2002 - replaced a stuck thermostat and cleaned the gaskets. May 2002 - they drove the car 181 miles to replicate, cleaned all parts and replaced the ced sensor. Car returned to service center on 12/17/02 for same problem.
Battery exploded, filled trunk with smoke, blew electrical covers off of fuse and relay blocks which are located too close to the battery under the floor of the trunk..exploded when turned ignition key to start car--very violent--if trunk had been open, acid would have covered anyone nearby. Better shielding of the battery needs to be undertaken.
Car stalled at highway speed without warning while on a bridge. Need to turn ignition switch off to restart. To do this you either have to put the car in neutral and coast while turning vehicle off then back on, or you need to pull off road and come to a complete stop to turn vehicle off then on.(hard to do while on bridge with no shoulder) .
The 1998 xj8 while at highway / interstate speed 55 and up has gone into limp or stall mode at random (6 times in the past 18 months) exposing the occuptants to severe traffic hazards from fast moving vehicles.the vehicle coast to a standstill and must be put in park to restart.the jaguar dealer has changed out parts but the problem continues.many 1998 jaguar owners have reported the same problem. The last incident was may 18, 2003

Secondary timing chain broke destroyed the entire assembly in addition to engine damage
Operating my vehicle, the engine starting running poor. Jaguar dealership explainedpoorly designed timing chain tensioners and arms have failed because jaguar made the components out of a cheap plastic, that is known to crack and cause the valves to contact the pistons. Jaguar updated the tensioners to metal , but refuses to accept responsibility for this design flaw and want to charge several thousand dollars to upgrade to the better designed parts.they refereed me to service bulletin technical service bulletin no. X303-68 , but it states if you haera a rattling noise, however it also states you may not hear a rattling noise, my car did not, and out of no where , thengine stopped running due to this design flaw, that has been updated.in fact, this effect every single 4.0 engine, that's millions!it's time this becomes a recall to replace these parts free and repair any engine component damaged from their failure.a customer should not have to pay thousands for an defective plastic tensioner, some one put inside a hot running engine, that was a very dumb idea, and the failure may even occur as young as 32,000 miles.
The contact owns a 1998 jaguar xj8. The contact stated that the vehicle would stall without warning when driving at higher speeds of approximately 75 mph.the check engine warning light would illuminate after the failure occurred.the vehicle was not inspected or repaired. The failure mileage was 98,000 and the current mileage was 101,000.
Always occurs at highway speeds, once at 60 mph, the engine will completely stall leaving you very dangerously stalled on interstate, have to drift over to emergency lane to restart engine.
Vehicle stalled at highway speeds without warning. No impact reported.dealer cleaned throttle body, but after 9 to 12 months problem recurred.whenever vehicle stalls, ignition has to be turned off and then on to rectify the problem.in addition, when vehicle stalls, accelerator pedal delivered no fuel.vehicle must be pulled over, turn off the engine and turn it on again in order for vehicle to run normal.dealer also performed repair on steering wheel because consumer experienced vibration at highway speed.wiper blades were replaced.*la

Vehicle experienced problem with engine stalling while driving at highway speed at 65 mph. Consumer stated that this problem was repaired under a recall. This recall could not be found in nhtsa/artemis data base. The dealer was notified.
The car has experienced a major safety problem that is characterized by the engine stopping while driving. According to the dealership where the car was repaired, the problem is due to the throttle plate closing for a self-cleaning mode during normal driving operation, this causes the engine to shut-off from lack of air. I believe this to be a major safety issue because the car engine stops when driving the car. I have taken the car (jaguar xj8 vanden plas) into the dealer (bauer jaguar- santa ana, ca) to fix the problem on 3 different occasions. The repairs were made under factory warranty on all occasions. The first time i took it in the mileage was 39,860 (feb 28, 2002) - the second time mileage was 44,898 (dec 3, 2002) and the last time it was 46,746 (march 24, 2003). The service writers at the dealership were aware of the problem and have seen it on several other vehicles. The dealership (bauer jaguar) instituted a fix (see below) which is not factory approved that appears to have solved the problem. My concern is this could cause accidents and possible deaths to other owners who have experienced the same problem because they haven't had the "fix" performed on their cars.the problem as the service writer explained to me, is due to the throttle body going into a"self cleaning" mode while the car is operating. This "self cleaning" mode means the throttle plate closes which shuts-off air to the engine, causing engine shutdown. The "fix" is to install a stop on the throttle plate so that the plate cannot completely close.
Vehicle stalls randomly bringing about a failure of all systems sometimes in the middle of crowded and fast freeways. Doing research on the problem it seems to be common for this type of vehicle and there seems to be a solution with the throttle body assembly design but aparently the manufacturer has not issued a recall for it and many people go to the dealerships spending thousands of dollars in repairs that do not solve the actual problem. The failure ocurrs randomly while driving under normal conditions.

I have a 1998 jaguar xj8. The vehicle stalls at high speeds, generally after i accelerate over 50 mph. The vehicle is extremely difficult to control and can only be restarted if you bring it to a stop. I had this happen while driving the car in ca. I was almost killed when the vehicle stalled. Jaguar dealer, santa monica, repaired as cyl burn out. Mechanic told me stalling happened frequently with this model.a few years later, san antonio tx on the 183 highway rush hour. Car stalled causing me to swerve next to center median ripping off the engine cover on debris.jaguar fixed throttle body not engine cover.service bulletin, defective throttle body. Car ran poorly thereafter. Stalled again year later. Dealer would not repair. $3,000 to fix.. Recently discovered consumers world wide have same problem. Service bulletin repair only short term fix. Jaguar blog in the uk -consumer discovered from a jaguar mechanic , most throttle bodies needed to be cleaned periodically as the lining bad andbuild up or deposits would form on the walls of the throttle body and cause it to malfunction. My mechanic had heard of similar problems. I called severaljaguar dealerships. I was told, off the record, that i couldclean the throttle and get by, but certain cleanerswould cause the lining to deteriorate. I was told the replacement was a rip off,off the record. Using the appropriate cleaner, the assembly was cleaned without removal. When we turned on the vehicle smoke billowed out of the exhaust for several minutes and then subsided. The vehicle now runs perfectly.jaguar is profiting from replacement of parts that could be cleaned and need top be cleaned regularly. Replacements effective short term only. Also , was told that the vehicle was out of warranty, and so the costs of repairs would not be covered.the manufacturerrefused to cover the repairs since the recall problems had already been repaired in 2004.
Engine stalls at highway speeds with no advance warning. Power steering and power brakes are therefore also inoperable. Vehicle must be coasted in this condition to a stop and put in "park" before it will restart. This obviously is a life-threatening maneuver in multiple lanes of 70 mph traffic.dealer has attempted several times to repair vehicle. Condition has occured multiple times; the date below is the most recent.

No summary listed for above vehicle.
Engine stalled at 75 miles per hour on the highway. This happened as i was accelerating and climbing a hill - car just suddenly lost power. I was forced to pull over on the side of the road. The car was difficult to restart after the incident, but eventually started up again and returned to normal. No injuries or accidents, luckily, but i have been driving the car very carefully since the incident in order to avoid trouble. The car has not been serviced, but the cause of the defect is well-known among jaguar owners and dealers.i have spoken with many other owners of the 1998 xj8 who have complained of the same problem. The problem is well-documented by jaguar, and yet no recall has been issued yet. The tendency of the car to stall at highway speeds is a potentially life-threatening defect. I hope you will consider taking action on this case immediately.
98 jaguar xj8. Engine stalls without waring at freeway speeds. Jaguar dealer service rep indicated this was something that is not uncommon. Throttle body stated to be the cause of the failure, according to dealer service rep. Very dangerous situation. It has happened 5 times. Pls advise if this is being investigated. I have copies of previous complaints from web site.
This is the 5th occurrence of this engine stalling at highway speed. Prior stallings occurred on12/8/98, 7/14/99, 10/19/00,11/17/00 and finally today: 7/24/02. Multiple attempts have been made by the dealer to solve this problem, and yet it persists as a safety matter. I do not allow my wife to drive the car. One additional comment, it is no fun to be at freeway speed and find that your car has suddenly stopped running.
While driving on the freeway my car died out even though my pedal was to the floor. It was the most frightening experience of my life and i feared for my safety. I was a miracle i was not killed.
I purchased a 1998 jaguar xj8 from peyton cramer jaguar in july of 1998, vin # [xxx]. Since that time i have had a repeated problems with engine stalling at freeway speeds (55-70 mph). This occurs with no warning, and places my family and me at risk. When the engine stalls i have to drift over to the right lane, against the flow of traffic so that i can park the car. Only then can i restart the engine, since it must be started in the "park" shifter position.information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

Front deflector came off vehicle while traveling at highway speed of 70 mph. This condition almost caused a vehicle crash. Dealer notified. Feel free to provide any further information.
Vehicle recently purchased used from auto broker.since purchase, there has been a vibration seemingly originating from the right front wheel area.during an exceptionally windy day (30+ knot crosswinds on highway), the vibration was strong enough to make me question my ability to control the vehicle.i assumed this was due to tires out of round/balance or vehicle out of alignment so purchased 4 new tires and had vehicle aligned.vibration is still noticeable although not nearly as strong as before.still notice that when strong gusty conditions are in the area that the vibration increases accordingly.possibly related condition is that when sunroof is open and vibration occurs i can hear a strumming sound like there is a problem with the aerodynamics of the vehicle.
While driving 50 mph +vehicle vibrates which may possibly cause a loss of vehicle control.dealer cannot determine cause. Please provide further information.
Vehicle shakes and shimmies above 38 mph. Tires and wheels are involved. Dealer and jaguar engineer tried to fix and cannot. Extreme safety hazard.

Vehicle stalledand coasted to a stop while driving at 65 mph. Pushing the accelerator during this time was totally ineffective.
The contact owns a 1998 jaguar xj8. The contact received a manufacturer notification regarding service action numbers514 (closed throttle operation). The manufacturer provided a no charge remedy under the customer satisfaction program. The letter was received approximately one year ago. The authorized dealer was notified in january 2010 for the service repair. However, the service action numbers514 expiration date was december 30, 2009. The contact was displeased to know the expiration date was not disclosed on the notification letter. The failure mileage was unknown.

While traveling on the freeway at speed ofapprox. 60 miles per hour the vehicle lost the ability to accelerate and coasted to a stop.fortunately i was able to pull over and restart the car. The loss of power resulted in a very dangerous situation on one occasion as i was stuck between a cement truckin front and a car carrier to the rear. I definitely feared for my life. After the third event i contacted rusnak jaguar in pasadena and they told me the problem was due to carbon buildup in the throttle body and the solution is to remove the throttle bodyand clean and readjust. I had this work done on the 50,000 mile service at a cost of $200.i was told this problem is only on the 1998 and 1999 models and that a "fix" came on later models. I believe a recall is in order on this car.*ph
While drivingat low speeds the vehicle stalled three times. It was determined that the stalling was caused by the throttle cable housing.

Recall 98vo22000; cable adjustment bracket nut on the outer sleeve of the throttle cable can become displaced from the cable adjustment bracket.recall remedy did not correct the problem, please give any further details.
The vehicle stalled on several occasions, and the windshield wipers did not turn off.the service dealer told the consumer they needed to clean and adjust the throttle housing, and the vehicle was designed to stall when maintenance was needed.mrscc
I have an 1998 jaguar xj.the inside rear-view mirror, which has a fluid inside that dims the image in the evening.the car has only 40,000 miles and is well-treated.nevertheless, the fluid has leaked out all over the shift console.the mirror of course no longer works properly.the dealer has advised me this is not covered under the car's warranty.this is indeed a safety issue since this necessary piece of equipment should be made in a manner that allows durability and utility for the anticipated life of the car's interior.
