On 11/24 i was involved in an accident. I hit someone who lost control of their vehicle and pulled out in front of my car suddenly and without giving me much response time before i hit her car. My isuzu rodeo had extensive engine and body damage and my concern is that the air bags never deployed. I was going at a high rate of speed, being that i was on the highway traveling on the hov lane. Thankfully the injuries have only been soreness and nothing too serious since we were wearing our seatbelts.
Passenger side air bag assembly mounts have come loose which causes air bag assembly to move around behind dash.this rattle is very bothersome and can not allow anyone to ride in the front passenger seat because it might go off.we have been to the dealership twice for repair of this but it keeps coming loose.the dealership has given us several conflicting explainations as to why it keeps coming loose.they have altered the repair documentation saying no work was needed but they tell us the dash was removed and the assemebly reattached and secured.we have asked to speak with a manufacturers rep but they say we will have to what until he is in town.we have been waiting for over a month and a half for an appointment with him.meanwhile we can't allow anyone to ride in the front passenger seat.
My air bag light will not go off...had codes checked and cleared but the light come back on....brakes has been replaced...but breaking distance is extended
While travelingat any speed hearda loud rattling noise was coming from underdashboard. Consumer states the rattling sounds like the whole dash is coming loose or the air bag has come disconnected.
Air bag failure. Also due to design horn has been defective.
While driving at 60 mph, steering wheel locked, and abs brakes did not work at all. Frontal impact into railing, and airbags did not deploy. Dealer contacted and was not aware of the problem. Cannot remedy the vehicle. Problem still exists. Provide further information.
Was traveling 45mph when another vehicle ranstop sign. And hit consumer's vehicle onfront side. Upon impact, air bags failed to deploy. Seat restrained rodeo driver. Received slight injuries.
Vehicle was apparently in a frontal impact due to serious damages to bumper/hood and windshieldthatcrushed i.driver's and passenger's airbags did not deploy.manufacturer contacted.please provide further information.
Vehicle experienced a frontal collisionat 45-50 mph. Upon impact, air bags did not deploy. Dealer / manufacturer were not notified at this time.
While driving at 40 mph, consumer hit another vehicle on the front driver's side, and driver's side/passenger's side air bags didn't deploy.
Very dissatisfied with vehicle. It''s has many problems from start.while driving the vehicle and going into gears the vehicle surges forward. Car shimmy's with no available fix.vehicle has strong suspension vibration and become more pronounced as speed increases.the abs light illuminated and stayed on.the brake pedal never seems to go to the floor, it just gets sponging and you feel the abs pulsating thru the pedal and the vehicle doesnt slow down, causing extended stopping distance.fuel sending unit is operating erratically.gas gauge reads empty nearly all the time regardless of level of fuel.after filling tank gauge will rise to 1/2 then as you drive a few miles it will drop and read empty.passenger side air bag assembly mounts have come loose which causes air bag assembly to move around behind dash. This rattle is very bothersome. Paid a lot of money for the dealership to fix problem, but the rattle was back soon after. The bolts came loose on passenger's side front door.wheel studs on 1998 isuzu rodeo strip off.glove box in 1998 isuzu rodeo sticks and hard to open.
Consumer attempted to step on brakes as he was approaching a stop sign and vehicle did not stop. Rearended vehicle in front. Upon impact, air bags did not deploy. Driver sustained injuries.
Was slowing down for a stop sign. Heard grinding noises. Brake pedal went to floor, rearended another vehicle. Neither air bag deployed upon impact. Been to dealer 5 times or more for brake problem. Has squealing in rotors.
The contact owns a 1998 isuzu rodeo.while driving 30 mph, the contact struck the front of another vehicle.none of the air bags deployed.the vehicle was destroyed.a police report was filed.the purchase date was unknown.the current and failure mileages were 107,326.
Airbags failed to deploy in a 35mph head-on collision with a car and then a wall.
Vehicle was stolen from driveway.vehicle was recovered the next day, but was invovled in an accident inwhich both air bags did not deploy. Also, front windshield was broken. Dealer/manufacturer notified.
The vehicle was being operated at 65 mph under cruise control for a continuous period of three hours in broad daylight. A rainstorm was encountered and the vehicle's exterior lights and windshield wipers were engaged. After approximately three minutes of such operation, the engine and all electrical components suddenly ceased. The same situation occurred the following day (july 10, 1999). A similar complete shutdown occurred in december, 1998 and the vehicle was taken into the dealership for inspection. The vehicle was also inspected by the dealer on july 13, 1999. In each of these inspections, the dealer advised that the source of the problem could not be determined. The initial incident in december, 1998 occurred while driving at night during a severe snowstorm at 35 mph and resulted in being forced onto the shoulder of the road without any lights/power. The latest two incidents occurred in daylight but at high speed on an interstate highway. One of the two recent incidents was a very near miss as a 16 wheel tractor trailer was following about 200 feet behind when all power was unexpectedly lost.
While driving about 60 mph on the highway, smoke was coming from underneath the vehicle.
Dt: the contact stated h vehicle burned to the ground after it stalled. The fire originated from under the hood. The contact had no problems with the vehicle prior to the incident.he tookthe vehicletodealer for an oil change less than twelve hours prior to the fire. A police report was taken. The fire department did respond. The police report indicated the fire was of an electrical nature. Updated 02/24/06.
Do not buy one!have had thevehicle 2 years and has been in shop 10 times for various reasons: electrical, strange noises from everywhere, check engine check light for no reason, valve noise(s) at 15k miles, recalls, etc.
The contact owns a 1998 isuzu rodeo. The contact stated that the electronic door locks intermittently locked the contact out of the vehicle. The front driver's side and rear driver's side doors failed to unlock electronically or manually. The contact mentioned that the key was used in order to unlock the front passengar's and rear passengar's side doors manually. The contact entered the vehicle from the front passengers side ocassionally. In addition, the contact had noticed that the rear end of the frame had rusted and corroded. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer for a diagnostic. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 143,000.
The abs light illuminated. The dealer stated the rear sensor and harness needed to be replaced.
The contact owns a 1998 isuzu rodeo. The contact noticed fuel was leaking from the vehicle and while driving the fumes entered the vehicle.the fuel gauge was inoperable and she was unable to determine how much gasoline was in the vehicle. The dealer nor manufacturer were not notified.the vehicle was taken to a private mechanic who inspected the vehicle and confirmed that there was a hole in the top of the fuel tank and the fuel gauge was faulty.no repairs were performed.the current and failure mileages were 168,000.the vin was unavailable.
Starting the vehicle became difficult because of anti theft.turning the key to start the car would not elicit any reaction at all.the car is designed so that when the car ignition is turned this grounds the anti-theft and the electrical signal then can pass to the starter. To fix the problem we grounded the anti-theft permanently to the body from the engine mounted fuse box.
I have continually replaced major parts on my vehicle since owning it.from the electrical system, transmission, fuel pump, etc.
Dt*: the contact stated, the key would not come out of the ignition after the ignition was turned off and had been lodged there for 5 days.the contact notified the service dealer who determined the problem was with the cable coming from the transmission to the ignition. The manufacturer was notified.
Fuel gauge began reading erroneous. Replaced fuel sending unit located inside fuel tank but still only reads 1/8 of a tank when full. I believe the vehicle must be reprogrammed by the dealer for this particular model year. I have to go by the miles driven to estimate next fuel stop.
Going 55mph when the fog lights flicked on & thenwent off. Stopped vehicle to check. Vehicle failed to start after sitting awhile. Was informed by mechanic that alternator caused a drain on battery & needed repairs.
Alternator failed twice.yh
Air bag failure. Also due to design horn has been defective.
Horn will just start blowing non-stop.once car warms up, it will stop. Consumerdoes not have to be in the vehiclefor the horn to start blowing. Took vehicle todealer. Dealer indicated it was a manufacturer's defect, but since vehicle was out of warranty owner would have to pay for repairs.it was the airbag that was causing the horn to go off. *ml
The contact owns a 1998 isuzu rodeo. When attempting to use the horn the sound, the volume was very low and other vehicles were unable to hear it. The vehicle has not been diagnosed by the dealer. The current mileage was 100,000 and the failure mileage was at 258.
No summary included.
Vehicle hard to start. Sometimes need to hold the key in start position for more than 10 seconds. Happens at least once every week at random times. Have the dealer check it out several times, and couldn't find anything wrong.
Vehicle originally failed summer of 2000 with ~42000 miles.while driving, engine would stall for a few seconds and re-fire.vehicle was taken to the dealer and they stated that until the vehicle failed and would not start again, they could not diagnose the problem.as time went on, the failures became more frequent and more severe.the vehicle will stall and will not start for 5-20 mins.sometimes the vehicle will not start in the morning when it is cold.this problem has been reported the last 6 times the vechicle was taken in for other service and the dealer has been unable to fix the problem.during hot weather, the vehicle stalls at least once per day.same symptoms as 98v170000 recall.dealer claims recall was performed or vehicle was n/a.dealer just kept the vehicle for 11 days, was able to reproduce the problem 1 time.contacted isuzu and cleaned all ground wire contacts.this did not fix the problem.i have been in many dangersous situations with the vechicle stalled on high-speed freeways with no shoulder to pull onto, and in traffic where i have nearly been rear ended multiple times.
Vehicle has many problems from start, car shimmy's with no available fix, rear brakes make noise, bumper paint is very cheap, steering wheel makes rubbing noise when turned, rear cup-holder doesn't stay shut.takes too long to start vehicle.
Rough idle & check engine light, stalling. Large crack dealer says sees many of these.
Engine intermittantly shuts down when coming to a stop. Ie. Happens on highway when slowing down to go thru a toll or in stop and go traffic.takes several attempts to restart vehicle. Vehicle taken to dealer several times problem still exist. This i feel is a definite safety issue if i get caught stopped on the road and get rear ended.
Vehicle was parked and unoccupied in front of owner's home - in first gear with parking break engaged and wheels turned toward the road.there was a clicking noise under the hood and, although parking break was applied, vehicle's wheels were rotating, as if the vehicle was "driving itself".vehicle proceeded to hit another vehicle parked 6+ feet in front of it.when it hit the other vehicle it pushed and held the vehicle's frame about 3 inches forward.the engine started smoking and continued clicking.fire and police were called.when fire and police arrived, firemen removed battery cables to vehicle and pushed vehicle back to the side of the road and the vehicle's body (vehicle that had been hit) swung back over it's frame.this very dangerous occurrence was witnessed by the woman whose vehicle had been hit.also, abs system on the isuzu never worked and the four-wheel drive most times didn't engage or disengage as it should have.0n 7/9/2003 the dealer stated the anti theft module failed which caused the vehicle to start up.
Engine light continually coming on, replaced pcm, however continues to flash. Mjs
The pcm unit on the 1998 isuzu rodeo was recalled in 1998.despite numerous attempts to replace or repair the problem, isuzu is unable to adequately resolve this issue.
Intermittently consumer was unable to remove the key out of the ignition switch. Also, doors unlocked from the inside.the power locks did not work the way they were designed to work.
Vehicle registration was incorrect which caused the recall notice 98 v 170 000 to go to an incorrect address.the defect occurred, andmanufacturer wasrefusing to honor the recall based on the campaign ending.
Front wiring harness failed.nlm
Vehicle experiencing same problem as mentioned in recall98-v-170-000. But this vehicle not included in recall due to vin.
Going 55mph when the fog lights flicked on & thenwent off. Stopped vehicle to check. Vehicle failed to start after sitting awhile. Was informed by mechanic that alternator caused a drain on battery & needed repairs.
Harness clip missing from under dash.
The consumer received a recall notice on march 2003 but the part was sill not available for repair.please identify the part.*nlm

Engine seizure, spun bearings due to no oil.further investigation found that isuzu suggests changing oil at 7500 mile intervals, but also considers 1qt oil usage per 1000 miles is "acceptable" usage for the 3.2l v6 205hp engine.truck holds 6 quarts of oil, and i had oil changed by reputable oil change places every 5000 miles.reports of 1qt oil usage per 800 miles fairly common on internet auto bulletin boards.do the math.
Whenconsumer was driving vehicle shook and rattledalso, engine light came on and off. Temperature gauge would register hot, and cold back in forth. Dealership stated thatwarranty ran out, anddealership had acknowledgement ofproblem with recall.the head gasket and timing chain failed.the consumer had asked the manufacturer to do the repair on warranty.
While driving 50 mphengine was producing a loud knocking noise. Dealer stated that the bearing rodfailed which caused excessive oil burning, and the engine needed to be replaced.
The vehicle does not start, the check engine light and abs light comes on intermittently.after replacing the battery, the consumer was informed that the wiring harness cable is defective.recallfound by the consumer and the manufacture states the repair has been made.
The first incident i reported for the water pump failure, i kept hearing a rattle and air escaping so i took it to the dealership and they said the water pump had failed and leaked onto the timing belt causing it to have to be replaced.the next incident with the timing belt in june, 2000 i was driving home from work and had stopped at a stop light and the rodeo just stopped running and would not start up again.the dealership said it was the timing belt and they had just replaced it 23,000 miles ago.it was covered under my extended warranty and they had to basically rebuild the engine and replaced many items.the dealership was unable to determine the cause of the timing belt breaking.the third incident with the timing belt happened this moring on my way to work i was going approximately 65 mph and the car stopped running and i pulled to the sideof the road and called for a tow truck.isuzu says it is the timing belt again and it is not covered by the extended warranty because of the mileage and i will probably end up paying out of my ouw pocket to have the repair completed this time.
Car loses coolant and overheats. Engine has been pressure-checked and dye-checked. There appear to be no leaks. After further repairs to no avail, it is concluded that coolant is escaping via the exhaust, and the heads need to be replaced. Vehicle has only 88,000 miles, which i am told is very low to have such a major problem.
The vehicle burned oil fast.
Engine blew after less than 60k miles in 1998 isuzu rodeo. Repairman tells me it is a known issue with the engines burning 2 quarts of oil every 1500 miles.
1998 isuzu rodeo used 5 liters of oil in 4000 kms and seized up with out warning on 30 dec 05. The oil light and engine light did not come on isuzu dealers said it won't come on until vehicle is out of oil. So why put sensors on the truck. Only 92000 kms on the rodeo talked to saturn, isuzu in fredricton and gm customer service was told to bad so sad check you oil more but if we do a recall on excessive oil consumption keep your bill and we may refund you. The truck did not smoke or leak oil. The oil was check 14 nov 05. It always used 1 litre every 5000 kms. I was told by dealer it would not get any worse. Guess they were wrong it is going to cost me $3700 to fix. Thanks isuzu and gm.
Whenever vehicle slows down for a stop, it would stall out for no reason. After stalling out & waiting a while, vehicle can be restarted. Hadtaken vehicle to dealer for repairs, butcause not found.right rear brake leaking oil.*mjs
The vehicle was leaking anti-freeze. Service center (non-dealer) reports after analysis that anti-freeze is leaking from spark plugs as a result of a cracked engine head. Parts for repair on back order, perhaps indicating a wide-spread problem.
Engine idle was resolved by dealer. Problem valve cover leak. Shifter on natl backorder.
We have experienced several problems with this vehicle, the major problems have included the muffler system being replaced, front crank and rear main seals leaking and being replaced, transmission being toally replaced at 57k and now our timing belt has snapped causing $4,000 in damage to the motor.owner's manual states that timing belt does not need to be checked until 75k the vehicle only has 67k.we lost the transmission and the motor on i-20 in louisiana going at a rate of 70mph, both times being left stranded on the interstate early in the am.both incidents have put my family in danger and i honestly believe that if either had occurred later in the day it would have resulted in an accident.
My suv ran just fine , then all of a sudden it just stop running, it was taken to the dealer ship the following monday wherein it was checked out and they told me that all the 16 valves were bent, the timing belt still intact , the pistons were still good, but had to look @the head to see they was more damage. They let me know that they was a defect from the factory, now i need a new engine $6620 for parts and labor. I did some research on last week and to my knowlegde there was a recall on last year wherein a part needed replacing or clippedfor if it is not replaced , resultswould be engine failure. While driving along ,the engine would shut down and not start back up, not even jump start. Now the point of the matter is i was not notified of the recall plus i purchaed the vehicle in may 1999 the dealer failed to correct the problem before i bought it, plus failed to notify me of the recall , to bring the rodeo in for repairs. Over 55000 rodeos were recalled. I want justice. Ican't afford to pay out $6620 for a defect caused from the factory. Please help me!!!55.
Prior to recall 01i002, timing belt broke causing vehicle to stall, vehicle would not restart, as a result of the damaged caused consumer had to have the engine rebuilt, consumer is requesting reimbursement for all services completed, time missed from work, transportation, and emotional stress.*et
Every time i took my rodeo for an oil change, i was told there was no oil showing on the stick (even though it was usually changed every 3,000 miles).two weeks ago the engine started making noise and i took it to the dealership and was told i needed a new engine!!($9,000) i think these motors are defective.the manager at my dealership called the factory (to see if they might assume some responsibility-i provided all of my oil change receipts) only to be told that theinformation i received after each oil change should have been enough to send me to a repair facility??!!they didn't feel that they should be held accountable.

When the brakes were appliedvehicle continued to roll.driver had to hit the side of the curb to stop.mechanic replaced the anti lock brake sensor. Also, in june of 2003engine was replaced because the timing belt came off and destroyed the engine.
Invoices list parts replaced as: purge control solenoid valve, solenoid valve, purge canister, convertor purge solenoid, purge canister.reported to isuzu and dealer.neither think failure 5 times is a problem.want us to just 'wait and see if it happens again'.quote from isuzu when trying to resolve problem: "the area/zone manager doesn't need to be involved right now.let's just see if it happens again.as long as the dealer is fixing it under warranty, it's not a problem".
When driving consumer heard a noise coming from the engine compartment.engine check light never came on the dash whenvehicle cut completly off. Consumer contacted the dealer, dealer statedengine needed replacing. Please provide any further details.
The engine of the vehicle has stalled several times in normal driving environments including highway and city street.these incidents that have happened while i am applying brake to slowdown the vehicle due to traffic conditions or changing course to another predetermine direction.occasionally, when i apply brake to slow down the vehicle due to traffic conditions, the tachometer indicates engine rotates abnormally.the engine's speed surges.at times when engine idles at extremely low rpm, it stalls.
2 times vehicle left me & my 6 year old twins stranded on dark dangerous hwys.on 2nd engine- and now possibly 2nd transmission? 1-28-99 incident scary- smoke and burning smell. All of sudden-no warning. Suv rolled to stop on pavement, unable to shift into any gear. Had to allow grade of road to roll me backwards in n off the pavement and into dirt shoulder to safety. Suv out of service to date-23 days. Dealer does not know what is wrong-can't indicate problem. No one hurt, yet.
While driving at 55 mph highway speed vehicle started jerking until it stopped by itself, and consumerwas unable to accelerate.
Piston rod failure.the first incident occurred in or about january, 2003.the engine on my 1998 isuzu rodeo began making a loud clanking noise and the "check oil" light came on.i added a quart and the noise subsided.i had the oil changed the next day.a few months later, the noise returned and i added two quarts of oil.the noise did not subside and i took the vehicle in for its regularly scheduled oil change the next day.the oil change mechanic told me that there were only two quarts of oil in the engine.i took the vehicle to another local mechanic to repair the problem and he told me the no. 1 piston rod had failed.when he called his parts distributor for a quote on a new or rebuilt engine, the distributor said, "'98 rodeo engine?let me guess, it's the no.1 rod" and stated that this was a very common problem.i had the car towed to the isuzu dealer where i had purchased the car and had almost all regular maintenance and repairs performed.the dealer was unable to get the isuzu district manager to offer any "good faith" assistance.the car has approximately 64,000 miles on it.i have generally changed the oil every 3,000 miles, although isuzu recommends changing it every 5,000 miles.i have full service records and almost all maintenance (except for some oil changes) was done at the dealer. *nlm
When evervehicle comes to a stopengine will die.consumer has contacted dealer, and they were not able to duplicate the problem.consumer wasafraid of being rear ended.

After driving for over 200 miles vehicle began to stall out on exit ramps. Isuzu has been contacted. The vehicle stalled many times when shifting to lower gearto bring it to a stop after highway driving.dealer is unable to find the cause.
Very dissatisfied with vehicle, feel extremely endangered in driving vehicle
Consumer states that the vehicle had an oil issue, the dealer stated that an oil change was needed, however consumer had just had an oil change 3 days prior to this.
When stopped at a light or stop sign truck idled and it felt like it would die. Check engine light came on. Took to dealer first time they could not duplicate problem. The next week was on tollway stop and go traffic again it felt like the truck would die and again the check engine light came on. Took to dealer again. Thet ran the car for 2 hours straight and drove car for 8 miles. Could not duplicate problem. The truck only had 10875 miles . Since that time has not happened again .when i stop the truck at lights sometimes it seems like the engine rmps go up and down and truck wants to die but the engine light has not gone on.regardingthe brakes one time when i first bought the car was driving 30 miles and hour to a stoplight. It felt like the brakes had no grip immediately. Took foot of brake and reapplyed and the truck stopped. Has not happened again. At the time i thought maybe this truck has a different feel than a car would have. This is my first suv. I have recently heard on the news about brake problems on this particular model. I drive children around in this car and have become very cautious at intersections. I feel there is a problem with this truck that can cause serious injury.i'm very concerned about my family's safety and about the people i could potentially hit if the brakes went out. I called the dealer to ask about information regarding this problem and was rudely told they had absolutely no idea what i was talking about. Any information about either of these problems would be greatly appreciated. Also i read there was a recall involving paint on the bumper being a problem. Have heard nothing from the dealer regarding this. I am very dissapointed with this vechicle. I am 42 years of age and have never had a vechicle i was afraid to drive.
The recall replacement part for the timing belt recall 01i002000 hasn't been available for over a month, and the dealership doesn't know when the part will be available.
Consumer received nhtsarecall 01i002000 regardingtiming belt failure. Consumer contacted the dealer to schedule anappointment.dealer informed the consumer that the parts were not available.it has been over sixty days anddealer does not have the parts available.
Abs light came on, driving 35 mph could not stop suddenly and slid into another car causing $2700 worth of damage to my car and insurance had lapsed had to pay out of pocket.fuel gauge always shows less than really is even when full.catalictic converter is always rattling.dt
Engine light appeared on the dashboard and remained on. Consumer was able to drive the vehicle to the dealerfor inspection, andmechanic placed the vehicle on the diagnostic machine code401 came on, indicating that egr valve insufficientlyflowed to the engine.mechanic replaced the engine.then, consumer informed the mechanic that this problem occurred more than once, and had not been resolved.

I have some very important issues pertaining to my 1998 isuzu rodeo.i read several blogs on a forum from other rodeo owners that have had some of the same problems that i have with mine.the biggest one is the abs system and the other is the fuel sending unit and gas gauge.these are two of the most reported problems but not the only ones.it seems that isuzu should be doing something to correct these and other problems associated with this vehicle.the abs has been addressed in some but not in others.although the gas gauge does not pose any real safety issues it is one that poses minor safety issue because of the possibility of running out of gas because of not knowing the correct amount of fuel in the car.
Consumer was driving approximately 40-45mph when she began to smell gasoline. The front wheel of driver side started to feel like it was turning to the right. Vehicle began skidding. Driver applied brakes, but brakes failed to stop vehicle. Consumer lost control of wheel and crashed into the gaurdrail, vehicle was towed.
The contact owns a 1998 isuzu rodeo. The contact was driving 40 mph when the rear of the vehicle suddenly began to abruptly sway to the right. The contact merged the vehicle to the shoulder and called a tow truck. The vehicle was towed to the dealer who inspected the failure and advised the contact that the brackets from the frame were fractured and also caused a hole in the fuel tank. The contact referenced nhtsa campaign id number: 10v436000 (suspension: rear) and was advised by the dealer that the rear suspension could be repaired under the recall but not the hole in the fuel tank. The manufacturer was notified of the failure who confirmed to the contact that the recall repair would not cover the damage of the fuel tank. The failure mileage was 160,000.

I note that other owners of this car of similar year have the same problem.(2) stalled in middle of freeway which almost caused crash with cars traveling in adjoining lanes at 65 mph.(3) replaced fuel pump at $500+ with no resolution of problem. The fuel guage still does not work, and car stalled again on freeway.
Fuel pump failed.
I have continually replaced major parts on my vehicle since owning it.from the electrical system, transmission, fuel pump, etc.
Consumer was told there was water in the gas so dealer replaced filter and cleaned gas tank.
Gas gauge failed. Yh
Abs light came on, driving 35 mph could not stop suddenly and slid into another car causing $2700 worth of damage to my car and insurance had lapsed had to pay out of pocket.fuel gauge always shows less than really is even when full.catalictic converter is always rattling.dt
Gas gauge failed, replacement was done on two occasions, problem still exist.
My 1998 isuzu rodeo has been having a problem with a very high idle somewhere between 1800 and 2300 rpm more often than not this can cause the brakes to wear down faster and ofcourse it consumes way too much gas i know that i can own another car but it is not right that i can't even find the right source for this dilemma the official isuzu wed site does not even have a referral or any attachment to make any kind of complains or at least a way out of this problem. I've change many components but still not problem resolve. If you google this issue you will realized that it's been a problem that hasn't been addressed by any meanseveryone's guessing but my biggest fear is that i suspect that there has been many close calls of near proportions to having accidents of serious consequences. Could you please address this issue pronto before anybody gets killed. I'm somewhat of an expert on cars i drive many different types but i've to be honest with you: i'm kind of afraid to drive my own car. I commute at least 50 miles per day. I have no choice in the meantime i need help. My resources are not that abundant as a matter of fact this car is a fine car but the parts are very expensive nonetheless i try to keep up with it as far as maintenance is concern and then some but i feel that in the hands of an average joe believe me they wouldn't be able to afford the repairs let alone the up keep. This is why i try to more than the average person to have my car running fine and care free. Please help. Sign distress driver from nyc.
Fuel guage reading incorrect.
Fuel gauge and rear brake light failure.
Gas gauge failed.
The fuel sending unit has become eratice since the vehicle was purchased used three years ago.at times it is impossible to know how much fuel remains in the tank.even after filling the tank the guage may read empty and the low fuel lamp will flash.i've read that this is a common major repair on this vehicle.
Fuel sending unit defective. Apparently a manufacturing problem after reading other posts. I have evacuated 3 times due to recent hurricanes in florida and have fought huge gas lines only to discover i still had 3/4 of a tank left even though it reads completely empty. I now have to rely on doing the math to determine if i need gas. This needs to be addressed now!!
Fuel tank sending unit failed.
My gas gauge started acting funny, i called my mechanic and told him and he informed me of technical service on the fuel gauge sender. We called bob dance isuzu in sanford, florida and talked to him about the situation. He says that he hasseveral isuzu rodeos coming in with this problem. I can't afford to replace something that is due to manufactures default. Someone needs to step in and make them fix the problem. I just talked to my friend who owns the same vehicle except a 2000 and she already had to replace this part. Do something about this situation!!!
Fuel gauge in 1998 isuzu rodeo.this is clearly malfunctioning/defective and, from reviewing a wide variety of internet newsgroups pervades all isuzu owners from this model year. The manufacture wants to place the blame on sulphur in the fuel.if this was the case, why does this condition not occur in many vehicle models.i believe this warrants a recall and i'm surprised a recall has not been issued.if you have any information about a forthcoming recall or what can be done to resolve this circumstance, it would be greatly appreciated. The dealer will only address this issue if the vehicle is under warranty.i've had the vehicle serviced multiple times but the dealer has never taken the initiative to repair/replace the part.this is unacceptable. *la
Fuel gauge is inaccurate. Filled rodeo twice and gauge shows empty and light comes on in cluster. Have not resolved problem yet.

1998 isuzu rodeo experienced brake failure. *mr the brakes were intermittent.the brake pedal would go to the floor and lock up.a few days later the abs light had come on.the problem was diagnosed as a rear brake sensor and was replaced.the molding on the driver door was loose, the latch on the console had broken, the sunvisor on the passenger side had fallen down, and the center caps on the front wheels had pitted.the consumer requested a buy back and or trade in. *scc

Transmission failed.
Transmission slipping and makesclunking noise whenever consumer shiftsinto drive. Vehicle been in/out of dealer shop on three occasions, and problem still unresolved.
Sway bar broke off while consumer was driving. Contacted dealer, anddealer was not willing to do anything. Consumer states vehicle is jerking backwards while driving.dealer could not find anything, however problem persist.abs light comes on intermittently.dealer could not find a problem.
Transmissionis in winter mode. Transmission can be in standard mode and vehicle will not accelerate, incident occurs intermittently. Dealer contacted several times, and cannot remedy problem. Problem still exists. Provide further information.
When driving at approximately50-55 mph the fifth gear will popinto neutral intermittently which could result in anaccident. Dealer cannot determine defect.
Vehicle has a low and high shifter when traveling. Vehicle will slow down without prior warning.
The two rear tires were warped and threads were coming apart, and 2 rear rims were bent which may have caused a loss of vehicle control.every time the vehicle started or stopped, it would jerk forward. Also, won't go out of park position, and brakes were grinding.please provide further information and vin#.
The transmission begin to skate and only stay in use the reverse and the winter drive form. The car was checked and the oillevel are in good standing. Later after two days all drive forms stay in blank. I put the car in drive 1 andthe car no response in any drive form.
Applied brakes very hard, vehicle did not stop, resulting in a crash, also the transmission sometimes jerksand makes a distrubing noise when changing during acceleration, car also jers when put in reverse.
I have continually replaced major parts on my vehicle since owning it.from the electrical system, transmission, fuel pump, etc.
Transmission failure.cracked output shaft from transmission.replaced with a new 2 piece transmission shaft.however, even though isuzu knows about this, hence the recommendation of the new 2 piece shaft, i had to pay for all repairs myself, over 2000 dollars
I emailed isuzu regarding problem - got form letter saying to contact dealer.dealer has been no help, and that's why i went to isuzu in the first place.hard copy letter being sent to isuzu, dealership, and nhtsa today.4-wd repeatedly fails to engage at any speed. Dealership claims they can not reproduce, though i have driven it into the garage twice this winter with it failing. They did tell me that they had trouble above "parking lot speeds"but "meets manufacturer specifications" since they could get it to engage eventually.when i push the button, at any speed, the light just flashes.this happens almost always first thing in the morning, and about 50% of the time otherwise.(the car is kept in a garage overnight so it isn't a temperature thing).they did mention that it has been a problem for other owners.i believe it is a safety issue since i bought this vehicle to be safe driving in snow, and without the 4wd, it's a rear-wheel drive vehicle and a menace on less-than-perfect roads.the dealership also told me that after i reach 60,000 miles, that there will be no coverage under warranty, even though this has been documented for over a year.
Rear axel leak.
Received recall notice 00v058000 in mail& contacted the dealership. Was informed that no parts were available for the rear axle. The parts were on national back order.
Left rear axle lateral link bolt fell off causing the vehicle to wander while driving.*et

The 1998 isuzu rodeo was purchased infebruary 1998 and began to have problems june 22, 1998. The problem was the driveshaft and a worn/loose internal yoke. The symptoms were/and still are the drive shaft slamming foreward and backward at every stopping of the vehicle or forward motion from a stopped position. Many times at sudden stops the vehicle has violently jerked forward and someday may cause an accident. We ahve ahs the vehicle serviced for this problem at falore lincoln mercury isuzu in san jose, california (twice), dismissed as "no problem at all" at chapman isuzu in tempe, arizona and serviced twice at pitre isuzu in scottsdale, arizona (the first time they admitted there was a problem and the second time they made adjustments and said there was no problem and that what i was experiencing was just a "normal" characteristic of the 1998 rodeos. In 1999 i filed a complaint with the better business bureau - they said i had too many miles on the vehicle (36,000) to have isuzu buy it back or have an isuzu dealer replace. No one associated with isuzu wants to admit to this problem yet they continue to fix it again and again. Today is january 31, 2000 and i need to make another appointment at pitre isuzu in scottsdale, arizona to have this same problem corrected again. Hope you can help.

My seat belt , (it is the shoulder, lap belt all in one,) the lap belt part lays across my stomach region not below my waist, snug at the hips which is standard safety wear.i had contacted my dealer as well as their main devision branch in california to resolve this matter and after numerous telephone calls, e-mails back and forth with the california division, and trips to the local dealer and it still has not been resolved.i was stalled by the dealer while they were waiting for a triplicate form to come in to order what they told me at the time would resolve my problem.a seat belt extension.when the form finally arrived i went down to the dealer once again, to be measured for this extension and at that time was informed that an extension was not the answer to fix the seat belt fit.the service manager told me that extensions were used for extremely overweight people, (which is not my problem) and that all the extension would accomplish for me is making the lap belt longer and even more ill fitting.the service manager frank then proceeded to tell me that even though he can see that my belt doesn't fit me (and volunteered to me that he doesn't bother to wear one) that there was nothing he could do for me.i wasn't satified with his answer and continued pursuing the issue further until he finally suggested having the sales rep steve get in touch with me.the sales rep never did call me and then frank the service manager contacted my husband telling him that they (the local dealer) could not be of assistance in resolving this matter and that we should once again contact isuzu direct in california.to date the matter is still unresolved and as i await for a returned telephone call from the california customer relations office.i am submitting my complaint to you for some needed help in resolving this matter.i am currently 5 1/2 months pregnant and not only is my safety in question but also that of my unborn child.sincerely, mrs. I called isuzu concerning recall number 02i002000 concerning the abs on the 1998 isuzu rodeo.i was informed that isuzu cannot send letters concerning recall because the government would not allow it yet. I called nhtsa and was given a number(1-800-959-3993)this number had been changed to 1-800-726-2700.i was told by this isuzu department that i needed to call customer relationsat 1-800-255-6727, which is where i started!!!
Brakes failed to engage after pulling away from a stoplight at about 10-15 mph. The cars ahead stopped but my rodeo would not even with me literally standing on the brakes. They were non-responsive although the abs grinding took place. I recently had the vehicle in for the algorithm change, but noticed no difference. I initially called isuzu owner relations on 7/8/02 about the msn carpoint recall alert under nhtsa campaign number 021002000, noptification date 6/02/02, affecting 161,927 vehicles. Isuzu owner relations personell vehemently denied there was any cause for alarm or action from isuzu. Dealership and isuzu personnel denied any problem with brakes despite calls to isuzu owner relations and visits to the dealership. This is the 3rd accident (several other near accidents) with this same type of problem occurring resulting in an accident...this time the insurance company totaled the rodeo. I had become so skeptical of this vehicle that i refused to use it on boy scout or family outings. Over the years, i have owned 10 vehicles, managed sales accounts in 11 states requiring me to drive appx 25 rental vehicles per year and yet had a spotless driving record ...from 1966 to 1998, before purchasing the rodeo...go figure. Will isuzu now admit that there is a problem with the rodeo? please investigate.
Truck's brakes seem to fail when travling at slow speed and applying brakes the pedal will lock up and make a reving sound and vehicle will not stop . Contacted isuzu motor after the second instant and the recall was preformed on brakes but was told there is no problem . I do not fell safe driving this vehicle.
Abs light has come on.due to the number of complaints and the open investigation (ea99-008) on the database i want to register this occurance.so far the brakes are working without abs.since warranty is over i will be taking it to an independant repair shop.

I bought a 1998 2wd isuzu rodeo from a private party six months ago. Since i bought it, i have been experiencing a loss of braking capability in some circumstance (every day, mainly when the engine is cold) that resulted in extended stopping distances and continuous illumination of the abs warning lamp.my garage mechanic told me this issue is due to the abs coil integrated module that needs to be replaced and that there is a recall on it for 1998-1999 isuzu rodeo vehicles (campaign no. 02i-002, campaign bulletin sb03-09-s001d, nhtsa campaign id number: 02i002000). I called two isuzu dealers but they told me there are no open recalls for my vehicle vin#. I don't understand why my 1998 isuzu rodeo is not included in this recall.
The contact owns a 1998 isuzu rodeo.while driving 15 mph, the abs indicator illuminated periodically.the brakes failed to stop the vehicle when driving over sand or gravel roads.the failure has occurred on four occasions.an independent mechanic inspected the vehicle, but was unable to determine the cause of the failure.the contact was advised that her vin was included in a recall; however, the manufacturer stated that the closest dealer was in connecticut.the contact lives in new york.a local isuzu dealer stated that they only repaired trucks and could not assist with the recall repair. The vin was confirmed as a part nhtsa campaign id number: 02i002000. The failure mileage was 107,000.
Turning into parking lot, brakes did not stop vehicle - did not lock, did not skid, did not stop, resulting in the vehicle going into the building.

While driving at 45 mph the consumers daughter (who was driving the vehicle alone) was changing lanes moving from the right tothe left.soon after crossing the divider lines she noticed brake lights ahead.the consumer's daughter depressed the brakes and heard a grinding, popping sound and the brake pedal sank to the floor of the vehicle.a few moments passed, then the brakes functioned properly, but not in time.the consumer's daughter collided with the rear end of the vehicle in front.the air bags deployed causing slight injuries to the arms and stomach of the consumer's daughter.the daughter also slightly injured her right leg in the collision.police did arrive on the scene, but no one was cited.the manufacturer and the dealer were notified of the incident. *nlm
While driving 50 mph the brakes failed, causing, the vehicle to collide into a parkbench. As a result, engine exploded. No fire reported. Dealer stated the cause of the explosion was due to lack of oil in the vehicle.
Consumer states when brake pedal is pressedpedal is hard, resulting inextendedstopping distance.
A recall was issued for the brakes, however the problem never was repaired.

Ea99008, abs braking system;when braking during normal braking, on regular road condtions , at slow speed, the truck doesn't stop and travels as though it is on ice.the dealer was not able to find out what caused the problem with the brakes.owner has not experienced any problem after the remote starter was disengaged. Please provide further details.
Abs brake problems; when applying the brakes on regular road surfaces, under normal braking, if hitting a bump or irregulaties in the road, the pedal travels to the floor and there is no braking ability whatsoever. This condition has almost caused a crash. The dealer is not able to correct the prolbem.
Whenbraking and uponencountering a bump brakes released, then locked up when vehicle toucheed the ground again. This caused vehicle to slide into intersections on several occasions, once resulting in an accident.
Rear brakes have been serviced 7 times, replacement of shoes each time. Abs light will not go out, brakes have failed twice at very low speed during stopping.

The brakes seem to go out when applied over bumpy roadways.the problem seems to happen at many different speeds and this has happened numerous times.this has occurred with my wife driving as well as when i am driving.we have had the car checked at two separate brake "specialist" shops, and at a honda dealer when we had the 100,000 mile tune-up and they said the brakes were fine.we have not had an accident yet, but the fact that so many other people have the same problem worries me and makes me think my wife should not be driving this vehicle.

I depressed the break petal and it would not go in. I had no breakes at all. I used the hand break and pulled to the side of the road. I tried again to activat the breaks but the petal would not go in. I turned off the key and immediantly the break petal went in and i had breaks.i started the car up again and knowing the dangerous problem i kept my distance from other vehicles and worked my way home. The same thing happened to me two more times. Each time the same thing happened. I lost brakes completely and had to turn off the key befor i could depress the brakes again.i am very concerned. This could have resulted in a serious accident and others may be at risk if the probem also exists with there rodeo.
At least six times in the past year my braking system has failed to work properly.at speeds of 30 miles per hour and less i've had to brake suddenly.the brakes will grab for a second, release quicky, then grab again.after the third time this happened, i ask the dealer to check the brakes.they found no problems. The brakes have failed many/many times.i have had the vehicle in the dealership over 10 times.they have brought in an isuzu design engineer and a zone manager.they couldn't find anything, and said that they "officially give up".they told me they do not believe that there are problems with the brakes, and that they don't know why i'm having the problems as others are not.they think it is just my lack of understanding about how abs systems work - despite the fact that i have driven vehicles with abs for many years.the zone manager was quite patronizing. The dealership has tried to be helpful, but i believe that they have been limited due to lack of information from isuzu.please contact me asap as this is a serious safety hazard.i would like to know what the status of the investigation is.thank you.karen.
Brakes failed pulling into parking space, jumped curb, brakes locked, vehicle struck building; brakes failed at high speed on highway service road, swerved vehicle onto curb to avoid collision; brakes release when driving over bumps in road at all speeds (e.g., railroad tracks, potholes, speed bumps); recreated this problem with isuzu service manager in the vehicle; brakes have constant metal to metal sound; vehicle lurches when air conditioner compressor starts - brake pedal falls; isuzu has stated many times that brakes meet specs; rear drums have been replaced; brake pedal has been recalibrated; problems persist; consumer safety has been grossly compromised without resolving the issue.

While traveling over any bump or sticky surfacesand depressing thebrake pedal, vehicle goes into exceeding speed while brakes are being applied and it takes longer than expected to come to a complete stop.the vehicle surge when brakes are applied.the dealer could not duplicate the problem, but the consumer is concerned about safety of driving this vehicle.
At any speed if i were to apply the brakes with normal pedal pressure while one or both front wheels is traveling over an imperfection in the road or small hole the brakes seem to fail to the point that the vehicle seems to have no brakes. The vehicle feels like it just loses the effect of the brakes. The pedal feel is that it seems to move a little close to the floor and the feeling of the abs pulsating is felt during the instance but the vehicle isnt proceeding to slow down until the wheel(s) stop bouncing or revbounding from the imperfection in the road then the vehicle tends to slow down. In one instance i let up on the brake pedal and re-applied it firmer and the front wheels locked up. The pedal never seems to go to the floor as in a loss of pressure it just gets sponging and you feel the abs pulsating thru the pedal and the vehicle doesnt slow down. I am just thankfull that this hasnt led to my family and i getting into an accident. Thank you for your timescott.

My brakes have failed on two occasions.i took the vehicle to the dealer, where i purchased it.before inspecting the vehicle, the mechanic assigned to the vehicle suggested it was operating as expected or designed and attributed the incidents to "wheel hop."work on the vehicle was not completed on the 2nd, and the vehicle has not been returned to me at this time.the first incident occurred shortly after i purchased the vehicle.i was at stop sign in a mall parking lot, at the top of a short, steep incline.after i pulled away from the stop sign, i pushed in the clutch, applied light braking pressure as the vehicle begin rolling down the incline, preparing to make a sharp right hand turn at the bottom of the hill.as the vehicle approached the crest of the incline, the right front tire hit a pothole at slow speed. The brake pedal dropped significantly, the brakes felt like they released without vibration or pulsing, and the vehicle rolled approximately one and one-half car lengths before stopping at the bottom of the incline.the second incident happened several weeks ago, after i had been in stop and go traffic for approximately forty minutes, with the headlights, air-conditioning and stereo on.i was creeping along in first or second gear, down an incline overpass, i pushed in the clutch, applied light braking pressure. As the cars stacked up to get off the ramp.my rodeo rolled over an expansion joint, at slow speed, the brake pedal dropped significantly, the brakes felt like they released without vibration or pulsing and the vehicle rolled freely about 3 to 5 ft before coming to a stop.

My elderly father was driving the 1998 isuzu rodeo on i-78 west bound when the breaks failed. My father said it was as if the abs came on and preventedthe brakes from working. The brake faliur resulted in a collision with the the car infront twice. At the time no injuries were reported however my father has experienced pain in his shoulders. After investigating how the brakes could fail on the internet i came to learn that this particular model of isuzu rodeo had been recalled due to abs brake faliur. This was the way i came to learn of the recall. To this date isuzu has never contacted me regarding this recall.i have made mulitple attempts to contact clode at isuzu customer relations his phone number is 1800 255 6727 ext 7417. We have exchanged phone messages but have not bee able to speak. I wish clode would make an effort to reach me.we made an appointment withbuhler isuzu at vall homes njto have the problem resolved. We took the car to this dealer today however they are unable to repair it due to lack of proper equipment on their part. I am filing this comlaint after making multiple good faith attempts to resolve this problem. While driving on a semi-bumpy paved road i attempted to make a quick stop from about 20mph.as i attempted to stop the abs brakes appeared to engage (had abs on my previous car) then totally failed and i rolled out into the intersection.went about 10-15 feet without any braking power.if cars would have been passing through intersection or had been in front of me - would have caused an accident.
Abs brake system failed twice.
Brakes squeal anytime they are applied. Gas pedal broke off. Gas pedal is a piece of flimsy plastic that snaps on and is very dangerous. Car vibrates at all speeds since purchase. The higher the speed the worse the vibration.
If i am decelerating and the front tires hit a bump or dip in the roadway, i lose the brake pedal.i have been told that this is an abs activation, however, i find it hard to believe this is normal abs operation.when i rear ended the vehicle, i was decelerating and rolled over a depressed manhole in the roadway causing the braking failure.i can reproduce the failure anytime.i have had isuzu dealers test drive the vehicle, and they tell me this is normal abs activation.i have driver four-wheel anti-lock break vehicle's and have never experienced this before.it has caused me to roll through red lights on numerous occasions due to rolling over road way defects while breaking.if abs is suppose to shorten my breaking distance in lieu of a skid condition, i'd rather go into a skid. At least then i will have some control over my breaking.please help... I seriously doubt this is normal for abs.***dimsii ivoq entry posted after 12/12/02 cut-over to artemis*****770768

Brakes go to the flooron normal conditions and at any speed making a trrraacckk sound and stopping a few feet away. This has happened 7 times ,luckily no car has been near and i've also pulled onto the sidewalk. Taken to dealer 3 times even have left a mechanic take car to his house for 3 days to check the brakes on the road and i've rented a car and they keep saying " the brakes are perfect, no problem." i fear for my life &others that ride with me or any other car on the street is in jeopardy. I 'm driving with one hand on the wheel and the other on the emergency brakes (that works because they've been used). Please if you can help me i would really be grateful.
75% of the time when i attempt to stop during a rain storm, when driving on bumps or stopping abruptly my brakes "slip". It feels like i'm pressing directly on the metal. When i pump the brakes it goes back to normal. I expressed this problem to a local isuzu dealer when getting my 30,000 mile service. He chekced it out and found that the brakes were in good shape. He could not find any reason for the brakes to disfunction. I took his word for it until it happened again when i tried to brake while driving over a rail road track and the brakes "slipped" again. I, as the main dirver of this vehicle, have gotten used to this and use extreme caution whenever i am in any of the 3 situations mentioned. Unfortunately, i am not the only driver and it is a concern of mine that another person driving my car when this happens may not know how to react and get themselves into a serious, possibly fatal, accident. Besides my local dealer, which hasn't been much help, i don't know where else to go to get this problem fixed. Please help if you can. Thank you.

In october of 1998 i had an incident where i needed to make a left turn on a residential street. When i braked to slow down, i couldn't stop and went through intersection. Luckily no cars were around. I was very confused because suddenly the brakes seemed fine. I told people about this and just figured it was a strange incident. In april of 1999 i was driving with a friend and traveling about 35mph when a tractor trailer stopped in front of me. I went to stop and had the same feeling as before when i had no brakes. I literally drove into the back of the semi at 35 mph. I couldn't go to my right or left because of cars. The car had $8,000 worth of damage. I told the body shop that the brakes went out. They checked and found nothing. I called isuzu and they said there were no complaints. Again, this was very confusing. I know i had no brakes and all of a sudden they were ok. The last incident happened in march of 2000. I was driving alone at about 30 mph and a car slowed in front of me. I hit the brakes and you guessed it, no brakes. I turned right over a curb and hit a tree slightly. This car is very dangerous to say the least. Someone will be killed! i told a friend i haven't seen in a while about this and he said he saw a report on nbc about cars that had suddenly lost their brakes. I checked on the internet and found the exact same situation happened to many others with the 1998-99 rodeo. I was so excited i couldn't sleep. Finally, i figured this would be taken care of. I called nbc and they said to file a complaint with you. This is a major problem that need to be corrected! please do something about this. It's not a coincidence. I've driven over 1,500,000 miles and have owned as many as 50 cars in my life. I know what i'm talking about. I'm afraid to put my kids in the car. Please call for as much info as possible. Thank you.

Turned left at a low rate of speed into an angled parking space in a parking lot; as the vehicle came to a near stop the brake pedal wentall the way to the floor and the car lurched forward, striking another parked car.i clearly remember the brake pedal being depressed completelyto the floor at impact.i put the car in park and then in reverse to back up - the brakes seemed to work at that point.

Received recall notice for 98 isuzu rodeo contacted bell isuzu was told the part was not availableat the time called back several times, was pulling in driveway brakes went all the way to the floor smashed into bedroom of roommate. Called isuzu they replaced part then saidit had nothing to do with my brakes. Said they tested my brake fluid it was contaminated, and that i needed a new master cylinder. The part replaced directly affected the absbrake system from working properly they believe its not failure from this abs module, aligorthamthank you for your time.
I was traveling down the road and when i hit the brakes the vehicle did not respond.i took it to meineke for an ispection and they reported a failure in the master cylinder.when i brought it to the dealer, they claimed the brake pedal should be able to touch the floor and then proceeded with no response.i tried to contact isuzu customer relations and they would not talk to me.

When pressing the brake pedal if my foot is not all the way on the pedal , the accelerator can be pressed at the same time. This has happened on several occasions. The last occurence resulted in a collision. I believe the closeness of the pedals contributes greatly to this happening. I have found that when i have my foot on half of the brake pedal and depress fully, the accelerator is engaged by top of myfoot.
Brakes failed twice while driving on a dirt road going down hill, at a stop light brake pedal went all the way to the floor.

Frame is completely rotted out.brought in for recall on brackets and the dealer, referred to me by the isuzu web site, sent me on my way without warning me of any problems.the next week, my mechanic said it was unsafe to drive and said it looked like it was driven in salt water for a year.i understand things wear out over time, but the structure of the vehicle needs to be strong and last more than 10 years.they are still selling these vehicles at dealerships without warning potential customers of their issues.this to me is a big problem and needs to be resolved before anyone gets hurt.i have two small children and would not drive them in this vehicle, but some people do not have the means to get around some other way.toyota bought their frames from the same manufacturer that provided honda and isuzu with their frames and they offered to buy them all back, realizing that there was a problem.they recently just settled with that manufacturer for the faulty frames.this needs to be addressed swiftly and not by a voluntary recall issued by the company to try to appease or stall a consumer protection agency.
I have a 1998 isuzu rodeo, currently under recall for a failing mounting point bracket on the rear suspension lower link due to excessive corrosion. Under the recall, i qualify to have a reinforcement bracket installed, however the inspection has revealed a deeper issue of extensive and unrepairable frame corrosion. This is not being addressed by the current recall and must be addressed immediately. This vehicle is not safe to operate. It will not pass inspection. Driving it will likely result in an accident and possibly death to the occupants.
October 17, 2011, i took my rodeo to, have it serviced for the suspension:rear recall. After service the mechanics inspection report noted that:"frame corroded badly, r/f hub loose, rear shock hanging, frame rotted thru" and that the front c/v joint had rusted off.the service department, did not advise me to drive the car home, as it was a safety issue. Over the years i have had the exhaust repaired, a number of times due to rust. This vehicle has never been off-road, and has only been used as transportation to work(all highway driving).

I have a 1998 isuzu rodeo jeep. A while back i had a piece of the frame repaired/welded, as it broke and the vehicle was unstable. I spent over $500 in repair costs to bring the vehicle to driving status again. To this day i still wonder if it is good enough to drive, as there is rust all on the under frame of the car. I have put so much time, and money into this vehicle, and i cant afford to just get rid of the car and get a new one. I have once thought that maybe the car had just sat in water before i purchased it, but due to the other stories i have read on this vehicle, i know now that it is not the case. Many people have experienced the same issues with the frame rust as i have. I have two young children that ride in this vehicle as well, and i am concerned for there safety as i hear that the condition of the vehicle can deteriorate over time. I think something should be done about this now before it gets any worse. I am not sure what the dealer is waiting for, maybe a catastrophe, before they do something about this. Please look into this matter as soon as possible before things get out of hand.
Was driving to work one morning doing about 35mph, and all of the sudden the rear end of the rodeo swerved almost hitting a car in the oncoming lane. Came to a stop and again rear end felt strange. Got to work and looked it over. Didn't see anything still little dark out. Called my mechanic he said check the frame. Sure enough the rear trailing bar broke free from the frame. My mechanic is a professional welder he said bring it over he would look at it. Had to tow it to garage where he raised it on a rack. The whole frame had all kinds of rot in various place. Rodeo is now junk. Only has 120,000 miles on it. Looks great on the outside. But its only skin deep!!! the day before this happened i had my daughter and her friends on the pa turnpike doing 55 mph with no idea we could have all been killed.
Drivers side shock separated from the frame, the entire frame is completely rusted out just waiting for something to happen.
1998 isuzu rodeo. Problem rotted frame which caused the torque bar to rot off the frame. I am lucky to be alive. I was going slow enough that i was able to handle the car. When this bar breaks off the car it causes the rearend of the car to start swaying. The car is now unable to be driven so i am filing this complaint to find out what i should do with this car. I honestly believe that some sort of buyback should be done on these vehicles to get them off the road before someone gets killed driving one. Should i keep the car until something is done or do i total it and sell it to a junk yard. Thank you
My 1998 isuzu rodeo, 94,000 mi, has a large (6") hole in the frame behind the right rear wheel. This hole was discovered yesterday when i took my car to liberty mazda in wakefield, ma for a routine oil change. This frame damage was not present on december 20, 2010 when i had work done for safety recall no. 10v-436 at cornerstone mitsubishi in wilmington, ma. The hole in the frame shows extensive rust and a large chunk simply fell out while i was driving. The car needs a new frame or is undrivable as an extreme safety hazard. I was told that it would cost approximately $8000 to repair this vehicle which has an estimated value of less than half that amount. Other than the frame, the car runs great and i have spent thousands of dollars in the past few years (at least 8000) to replace the engine in may, 2008 (cracks in cylinder), replace the radiator (twice; 2007 and 2010), brake work, among other expensive repairs. Now the car is a safety hazard and i am without transportation unless the frame is replaced.
The contact owns a 1998 isuzu rodeo. Due to the actual frame being severely corroded the recall remedy would not be sufficient in correcting the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The vin was unavailable. The failure and current mileage was 90,000.updated 03/08/11updated 03/09/11
I was driving vehicle and went around a curve and it felt like all the wheels were not going in the same direction for a moment. I pulled over and looked at the vehicle, everything looked ok but i was concerned so called a tow truck. The tow driver looked at vehicle before placing onflatbed and found the frame rotted/cracked in front of driver-side rear wheel. The vehicle was not safe to drive and has not been since then. This is not correctable. We purchased a new vehicle. The car was is good shape otherwise with 6 month old tires and well maintained.
While driving at about 30 mph i heard a loud pop from the rear of my vehicle. I immediately lost control, and the truck swerved into oncoming traffic. It was like it had a mind of it's own. I fought the truck back into my lane at which point it appearedto come up on 2 wheels (and it felt like it also), i was able to get stopped and pulled to the side of the road without collision. Upon further inspection i found that the vehicles frame rusted clean through and broke, the rear axle stabilizer arm also dropped off frame, causing the rear tires to lose any direction they had and wobble freely in the wheel well. This is the only time i have experienced anything like this, or ever seen anything like this. Once was enough. I have had it looked at by several frame and body specialists, even boilermakers, all with the same result, and the same answer, no. They say the truck is totaled, and refuse to work on it because of liability issues. The body and interior are in perfect shape, 143k miles, full tank of gas, licensed through next august, insured through april, parked for good. There is nothing that can be done to fix this, what is clearly a flawed design, and manufacturer shortcoming. Prompt attention is greatly appreciated, and necessary before someone gets killed.
In regards to current safety recall no. 10v-436, i own a 1998 isuzu rodeo which has been found unrepairable by the vehicle inspectors i was sent to by isuzu in compliance with the safety recall notice i recieved in december 2010. As the recall notice states, when repair is not possible, an alternative remedy will be provided. My inspection appointment ws march 16, 2010. My vehicle failed the safety and repairable conditions necessary for the vehicle to be driveable. I never got my vehicle back. I is still there. Three weeks have passed, no remedy has been offered. I have no means of transportation. The only communication i have had is one phone call offering a buyback of 1/2 the worth of the vehicle, $2500.00. I declined this offer as it is unfair, unjust, and i believe, illegal. I was told that i would recieve paperwork in the mail and another offer would be made. This has not happened. 2 weeks have passed with no communications. I have made three attempts to call the phone number i was given, have been put on hold for over 30 min each time, at which time i could no longer wait. I believe they are not answering the calls and have no intentions of making this right. They are not in compliance with the safety recall. Please investigate.

Visual inspection revealed the rear passenger side frame was failing.there was no prior warning in either incident.we have filed a complaint with isuzu motors.we consider ourselves very fortunate not to have been injured as this problem is clearly a major safety issue.
1998 isuzu rodeo severe frame corrosion resulting in the rear end almost dropping off of the vehicle.discovered during replacement of cracked rear spring the back half of the frame has completely turned into crystalline rust.repair of the frame has required welding new side plates onto the frame rails to strengthen the rear bumper support.without the added support plates the rear bumper is has no protective properties at all.inspection of this repair indicates that at best this fix will only last for a short period of time before additional structural failure of the frame occurs. Truck is only has 138,000 miles on a 12 year old suv this should not be happening to this vehicle.requesting an investigation into this problem it appears to be systemic to the 1998 to 2002 year models of this suv.requesting a recall and replacement of the vehicle frame.i am the original owner and sole driver of this garage keep suv.i have in the last 2 years had the transmission rebuilt, and a full top end engine job done only to find this problem just prior to getting the 2010 pa state inspection.with out the repairs it won't pass inspection.its costing me a fortune to fix a problem that should not have happened.

I own a 1998 isuzu rodeo.i just received a letter from isuzu stating that there was a recall on this vehicle due to massive amounts of corrosion on the frame.last january, when i went to get my inspection sticker, my mechanic stated how bad the rust was on the underside and advised me to get rid of the vehicle stating that "it is unsafe to drive".i ended up holding on to the rodeo until now and upon looking into this matter have found out that there have been numerous complaints about the same issue(s) i had.let me state that i also get a 1998 ford f-150 repaired by the same mechanic.my mechanic made a statement about how my work truck may look rough, but it is in way better shape structurally than the rodeo.they both have the same manufacturing date, approximately the same amount of miles, and been driven on the same massachusetts roads with the same salt on them.so, my questions to you are, why did it take so long to get this recall in motion?why are they able to state that because the vehicle is over 10 years old they are not responsible for it even though this issue has been going on long before isuzu's recall date, or when they notified the nhtsa?it seems as if they are getting kind of a pass here.my friends toyota tacoma was recalled a few years ago and toyota stood by their product and reimbursed her the value of the truck.there should be some sort of standard set forth on certain types of recalls.this is not an issue of a faulty seat belt or rusting spare tire holder, this is an issue of a car falling apart on the road while driving it possibly injuring the passengers as well as other motorists on the road.no excuses for honda or isuzu, there is no possible way they did not know about the faults years ago while servicing the same vehicles in their garages.toyota got a public lambasting for faults in their vehicles but i have not heard a peep about honda or isuzu's lack of initiative to repair the vehicles.thank you

While driving down rte 9 in framingham ma on 12/05/2008, my 1998 isuzu rodeo started swaying.it felt like the rear end of the vehicle was sliding on ice.i pulled off of the highway and had the vehicle towed.my mechanic determined that the rear sway bar had rotted off the vehicle.a new sway bar was installed, however additional rust was noted and i was told to keep an eye on it for future rot.in march 2010, while completing normal maintenance, my mechanic noted that the frame on the drivers side between the front and rear doors was rotted beyond repair.the vehicle now sits in my driveway.

Well on march 16 2012 we were driving our isuzu. Rodeo on the highway going 55 mph. And they said we had to have the vehicle to one of their repair shops by the next day or they wouldn't do anything about it and we did not have money to have the vehicle towed to them and it was unsafe to drive, so in april we took the isuzu to a body shop locally and he stated the same thing as the first garage but that if we invested $2000 into a new frame it would be good as new and since we haven't had the vehicle fixed due to we don't have the money and we haven't even paid the vehicle off yet,and the major problem is isuzu wont do anything about the problem and the recall was only for the sway bar,and the whole frame is damaged.

I took my vehicle to the certified isuzu dealership for repair during the 2010 recall for premature rust (nhtsa action number : ea09018) according to them my vehicle did not require the bracket to be installed.they treated the part with the preventive compound. During recent maintenance to my truck we notice the entire frame is completely rusted, to a point that you a easily poke your finger through the chasis in multiple areas.i took it back to hyundai of louisville to be inspected. They informed me that the rear suspension lower link bracket (which was the only part recalled) needed to have the bracket installed because it does currently show damage. After contacting isuzu they inform me that since the recall has expired they will not cover installation of the bracket.so i am now stuck with a family vehicle that is unsafe to drive!i did everything required of me during the recall.this is unbelievable!!! what am i to do now???

October 17, 2011, i took my rodeo to, have it serviced for the suspension:rear recall. After service the mechanics inspection report noted that:"frame corroded badly, r/f hub loose, rear shock hanging, frame rotted thru" and that the front c/v joint had rusted off.the service department, did not advise me to drive the car home, as it was a safety issue. Wheni looked under the vehicle, the bracket that holds the rear axle (left side) had broken off.frame is grossly rusted.when isuzu was called regarding the current recall, was told that the nearest service center was over 3 hours away.i am currently in the process of getting the vehicle to the service center, but due to distance this is an issue.
Immense amount of frame rust that has basically made the vehicle useless way before the end of its useful life. Has eaten away at the critical parts of the frame that has made it very unsafe and unusable to me. Had to get a new car as a result and now waiting to see what is going to be done if anything about truck. Would like to see the the frame fixed and the manufacture take responsibility for these malfunctions before someone gets killed or seriously injured!

After purchasing one lug nut and bolt to be replaced by tire kingdom, 15 other lug nuts and bolts broke off.i had to purchase additional lug nuts and bolts to be replaced.when i contacted dealer, (midway isuzu in miami) they informed me that this is a known defect of this vehicle but my basic warranty (3 years) is over and it is no longer covered.i purchased this vehicle used, with almost two years of use.i never received notification from isuzu that this is a common and well known defect of this model.i'm concerned that my safety may have been compromised and other owners of this model are also at risk.dt
While vehicle was being serviced for tire rotation and balancing.the lug bolt that holds the lug nut snapped off.the manager at tire kingdom has informed me that they have this kind of problem with isuzu's.he asked me to purchase the replacement part from the dealer and he will install it for free.i'm writing to you to report this just in case there is defect involved with these lug bolts.i am concerned since this is a key part of the tire and wheel assembly.please let me know if you need additional information or if there is a known defect.dt

I have a 1998 isuzu rodeo that was issued a recall for excessive corrosion on the rear lower link. This is not the only related problem. The rear section of the vehicle frame is rotting out as well. My rodeo has 80,000 miles and has absolutely zero body rust, yet the frame is experiencing excessive frame rot. A conversation with isuzu has lead nowhere. This could can be equally as dangerous because isuzu's remedy for the recall is to install a larger bracket over the original bracket, which is to be attached to an already deteriorating vehicle frame.

On numerous occasions, especially during the winter, the engine of my 5-speed 1998 isuzu rodeo has suddenly revved up to rpms of between 2500 and 4000 in neutral (between shifts and at stop signs and stoplights). It happens randomly; the dealer has not been able to duplicate the problem and claims to have no knowledge of this problem, although i provided them with copies of numerous similar complaints from the nhtsa website. Moreover, on three occasions when taking my foot off the accelerator pedal (twice on exit ramps and once when approaching a stop sign), the engine has died while the vehicle was moving at speeds of around 35 mph.
While driving, if consumer takes foot of the accelerator it feels like the brake is on and vehicle almost comes to a complete stop.

When coming to a stop, instead of the car braking, the engine revved and continued to move forward. This has happened 5 times, the last time i actually hit another car. I have taken it in for service, they never can duplicate the problem and say nothing is wrong. I am aware of the investigation going on into this problem with this make and model of car. Lug nut bolt sheared off.i saw where others had same problem so it may not have been the dealer who broke it.the dealer replaced it but used a lug nut which has already rusted.i haven't tried to take the rusty lug nut off so i don't know if the bolt is rusted too.i will have to replace the lug nut, at least, before it rusts onto bolt.this sounds very dangerous and now i am so paranoid about one of my wheels falling off while i am driving it that i have to check all four tires every time i drive the vehicle.with all the problems i've had with this vehicle, i am afraid to take it any further than the local area and after only 45,000 miles, i feel this vehicle is a money pit that is already used up.

I purchased a 1998 isuzu rodeo from "van trow" motors, in jackson, mississippi, in september 2003.the right rear tire had a lug nut missing.the dealer said to just replace the lug bolt, that it had stripped.on 04 july, 2004, i had a flat on the left rear.replacing the tire, another one lug bolt stripped, and a lug nut from a different lug bolt stripped.i took my flat tire to walmart to have the flat repaired.they refused to work on the tire, stating walmart is not allowed to do any repairs of any kind on rodeos due to lug bolts and lug nuts stripping to such an extent they can not be held liable and this was a safety issue.1998 isuzu rodeos have an inherent defect in the wheel lug bolts.either the lugs or the lug nuts strip out when tightened by air tools or hand tightening, causing the tires to be driven on less then six lugs tightened.isuzu is aware of this, as walmart has a memo at every store, stating not to do any repair work on isuzu rodeos due to the lugs stripping.this is a major safety hazard, and the lugs should be recalled and replaced.
