2002 hyundai sonata 82,000 miles on it, air bag lite on all the time manufacture no help in resolving problem, there was a recall for the airbags but not for this vehicle.

Was in accident airbag did not deploy.

Air bag lite stays on, had no accidents, or crashes, dealer wanted me, to spend a arm and leg to replace the module control unit. I sensed, that that may not be the problem, i took it to a independent shop, and had it diagnosed, with a scanner, and the scanner showed a code bd1406 ppd.which stands for passenger presence detector, and showed that it was defective. So its a faulty sensor.which translates to a manufacturer defect. I cannot afford, to spend $1.500 for a module, when it should only be thedefective sensor under the passenger seat, which should total around $360.00 including labor, and the hyundai manufacturer should be responsible for the fix. Before i get involved in a accident, and my life is at stake, including my children, and wife. I contacted, hyundai, and stated that i have a defect, and they wanted proof, as from, a dealership, or otherwise. Please let me know how to resolve thisdangerous daily task.

Dt*:the contact stated the airbag light illuminated indicating a problem.the vehicle has already been to the dealership twice for the airbag light.the vehicle was taken to the dealership again.this time the dealership offereddiagnostic testing to determine the problem.

The contact owned a 2002 hyundai sonata.while driving approximately 15 mph the vehicle was involved in a crash in which the air bags did not deploy.a police report was filed and the driver was reported injured.the vehicle was destroyed and towed to a junk lot. The failure wasnot diagnosed or repaired. The failure and current mileages were 80,000.

I have a hyundai sonata 2002.the 'airbag' light has been on constantly for over 4 years.just recently i want to sell the car and started to look up how to fix this problem, since i could never afford it before.i found out that thousands of other hyundai sonata owners are having the same problem, and that the air bag does not work as long as this light is on.this is a defect from hyundai and should not be the burden of the consumer.hyundai needs to fix this problem for all of its vehicles years 2000 - 2008 whether the warranty has expired or not.it is a travesty!!

Consumer states that after closing driver side door the side air bagdeployed, smoke started coming from under the seat, a few seconds later the entire seat was on fire. Their is a recall for this, but doesn't state it can cause a fire per consumer.ts

While cleaning out the vehicle, i had the front passenger side door open and when i went to shut the door, the wind took it and it slammed shut. As a result, the air bag on the side of the seat deployed. After researching, i found that models of my vehicle had similar recalls with the same summary of incidents. I spoke with the national dealer hotline and i was told that the vehicle missed the recall by 3 days. I am now waiting to hear back from a serviceman to see if they can do anything about it.

My air bag light came on. It stays on while driving now.updated03/10/11

My hyunday sonata had an accident, hiiting a parked suv and the sonata was totalled but the air bag didn't deploy (inflate).

I have had the sonata at the arapahoe hyundai dealer on two different occasions having the airbag light reset/fixed they told me it was a connection problem and they had to use a special grace to fix it now it's the third time the light has come on and i'm having to take it back to the dealer again not knowing what they're going to find this time.looking on the internet there's hundreds and hundreds of people with problems with sonata airbag lights looks like this is a problem that hyundaineeds to recall. I've been told by the dealer that the airbag system will not work if the air bag light is onthank you

I was involved in a car crash in which the entire front end of my car was smashed from the left front fender shoving the hood and front end so far to the right and in that the passenger door would not open and the side and front air bags did not deploy at all. I was injured by the door post.it was a 2002 hundai sonata..we are afraid that it may be a child involved next time there is a failure of the side and front airbags on the sonata..please bring this to someones attention tks lrw

Air bag light stays on my 2002 hyundai sonata. This has been a problem on and off for the past four years. The car was checked out by hyundai dealers in staten island and new jersey four different times. Every time with a code b1738,high resistance driver side air bag, repairs were made by them but problem still came back. I made a complaint to hyundai customer relations, case #3292132 about the on going problem with the air bag system, their reply was this was caused by debris under the drivers side seat. They also said if i wasn't happy with their answer i could take them to small claims court. The person iwas in contact with at hyundai was a misty 1800 633 5151 ext. 329 2132. On july 18 2007 hyundai of freehold charged me $211.86 to make repairs (poor connection under drivers side seat)codeb1378 at this time my car had 14,315 miles on it. Then on may 08 2008 atmileage of 18,895 i had to take it back for the same problem code b1378, at this time the dealer reset the srs at no charge but would deduct the $211.86 they charged me towards the cost of a new wire harness if needed. Even though this car is six years old it has very low mileage on it,so it hasn't been abused .i feel there is a serious problem with the srs systemin this make and model car. If the srs system isn't working this means the air bag will fail if there is an accident. All i want is to get this failure repaired properly, but it appears hyundai will not admit to having problems with their air bag wiring.

My roommate got into a t bone type accident she was going at least 25mph and the air bag did not deploy but it hit hard enough to rip the core support off, we have pictures. She did not take the ambulance but she's will probably go to the er later

Was in accident airbag did not deploy.

We were informed that the airbag would not deploy in the event of an accident and was not covered since the warranty had expired.the vehicle had never been in an accident and the airbag had not ever deployed so it must have been defective from the beginning.the vehicle was brought into napleton hyundai in west palm beach, fl in september of 2006 with the same airbag light problem and we were told by the service tech. That it was normal for the light to come on and there was nothing wrong with the airbag.

We recentlty purchased a used but showroom condition hyundai sonata with somewhere around 29,000 miles on it from a dealership.after about three weeks my son had to leave it in a parking lot.the throttle/cruise control cable (even tho he did not have the cruise control on) was stuck. Ever since i bought my car on halloween 2007, my 2002 hyundai sonata has had electrical problems.i would put the wipers on and my radio would turn on.my alarm randomly goes off and i can't disconnect it because it is tied in with the main computer for the vehicle ( i was told by mechanic).the doors used to lock by themselves, now they just don't work altogether.the radio cuts out and randomly tries to play a cd regardless of whether or not there is one in it.from the time i test drove the vehicle, the backlight on the radio never worked.approximately one year later, it all of a sudden began working and works to this day.i have brought this vehicle to the dealer i bought it from for these reasons among others, and he refused to fix them because he didn't know how.

- the contact stated that while drivingthe 2002 hyundai sonata at45 mph the vehicle lost power without warning. The contact was able to restart the vehicle after waiting approximately ten minutes. The vehicle was taken to a mechanic ,who advised the contact that the failure was due to the crank sensor, cam sensor, and the timing belt. The mechanic made the repairs.however, the same problem occurred the next day. The contact stated that the vehicle was then taken to the dealership, and they informed the contact the problem was due to the crank sensor, cam sensor and the timing belt. The dealership made the repairs however, the same problem continued to occur. The dealership then advised the contact that the module assy- timing and alarm system were faulty and needed to be replaced. The dealership repaired the module assy- timing and alarm system. The contact stated she has not had a problem with the vehicle since this replacement. The vehicle currently had 74000 miles.

Electrical system. I have already filed one complaint on the check engine light and the sensors. It has been in the dealership 9 times prior to this one. Now it is a cam sensor and i believe a speed sensor. Not only that but both wheel bearings are bad. It has roughly78,000 miles. You can only get parts at a dealership. The parts are not only overpriced, but the dealership charges outrageous prices to do anything. You can unhook the battery and the light will stay off for a couple of months and then it comes back on. I take it to the dealership and they supposedly fix it and the light comes back on in a shorter amount of time than unhooking the battery. I have spoke with hyundai when the problems started and all you get is we'll fix it until the warranty is up then you are out of luck. I can't keep the check engine light off long enough to even sell it.

Onsumer stated every time she exited the vehicle she was being shocked.dealer indicated there wasan electrical short, but hds not determined where it was coming from.

While driving at an undetermined speed, the battery light came onand the vehicle stalled.the problem was caused by alternator failure.the dealership indicated that there was a tsb for this issue. Houser dealership replaced the alternator with a different type and configuration. Another dealer replaced the battery, alternator and drive belt. All work was covered under warranty. *ph

Right front speaker pops on and off at a stop or moving. When you use the ac button, windshield wiper, windows, and turn signals the speaker either shuts off or turns on. The radio was replaced three times, the speaker twice and the wiring and wiring harnesses were replaced. The car has been in and out of the shop with and without repairs for the same problem at least 12 times.the problem started the first night when i bought the vehicle in october of 2001. The car has had other problems with the power window motors, battery, and remote door locks. I feel as though i have spent more time at the dealer trying to get the car fixed then actually enjoying the car. I have filed cases with the hyundai corporate office, a factory representative looked at the car, heard the problem, in formed the dealer on how to fix it. I received a phone call 6 days later saying the chief mechanic could not duplicate the problem so he did not touch it. Even though the factory representative heard the problem and told them what to fix. I have taken the first step in the lemon law, i have sent a certified defect complaint to the dealer. The received it april 11 2003 at 12:00 pm. I am just waiting on there response. This car has been a nightmare to my self and my family. Two visits ago the dealer had the car for one week. When i received the car back, the car was covered with an unknown substance (maybe tree sap) all over the hood, roof, and trunk. I brought this to the dealers attention while the factory rep was there. The rep told them to compound the car out and rectify this issue. When i picked up the car, the car was washed but the substance was still there, now with swirl scratches in the paint where they tried to up the substance off the car. Dealer and corporate will not take responsibility for this. This will be the final case for my lawyer against hyundai. *nlm

Dt:thespeedometer intermittingly stops working without warning. The consumer says she has tried to see if speed or distance affects it. She says there is no reason that she can see to make it stop working.the consumer has taken the vehicle to the dealer for the 5th time today. The manufacturer called the dealer to get it fixed. She said other electric components are not working as well. The doors, windows, and clock are slowly getting worse. The consumer has concerns that it might lead to something more serious, like a fire.

Headlight wire harness on drivers side is melted.pictures taken and uploaded.

I have a 2002 hyundai sonata that i bought new in april of 2002. As of march of this year at 27,700 miles, it has been in the shop for the check engine light 5 separate times. The first time it showed an oxygen sensor. Within the next 100 miles it was on again, this time it was an evap code and they said it was the fuel pump seal so they tightened it. Within another 100 miles it came on again and was another oxygen sensor. It came on again after about 3 months (and around 9,000 miles) and this time it was the evap code again and they said that it was the fuel cap. This had to be ordered and i called back after three weeks and someone had forgot to order it so it after all took 3 months to replace it. In the meantime the car was detailed and the company unhooked the battery, the check engine light stayed off for a little over a month (the light was on when it went to the detail company). So the fuel cap was eventually replaced and the light came on again within 100 miles after. This time it was 3 different codes. One for another oxygen sensor, one for a throttle positioning sensor, and one for a fuel increment sensor. I am at 47,800 miles now and i am told that it could take a few months to get the oxygen sensor due to hyundai updating the sensor due to a defect. By the time my car is fixed, this time the warranty will more than likely be up or close to it and all i can get from hyundai is that they will fix it up to the 60,000 mile warranty and if the light comes on after that it is my problem.they say it is not a concern due to something different every time.*la

Corrosion of subframe, causing it to break and then catch fire to the car under the hood, destroying wiring and hoses.

On november 30, 2020 after shopping in food store, starting the cat and coming out of a parking lot and driving the car forward, i smell something burning. Stop & open the front hood and saw smoke coming out of the air filter housing and started to burn. Somebody helped and put out the fire with a fire extinguisher. The car was running hood and my daily driver before the incident.

My car started getting erratic idling and then the engine light started to turn on. I got the spark plugs and spark plug wires replaced and then it mild down after around 1wk after, then the erratic idling while on drive or on reverse started again. Left it like that thinking it was maybe the fuel pump or something like that. Had my brother that is a mechanic check it and said he found the spark plug wires out of sequence, but after he made sure all were the correct orderthe same problem started again, same erratic idling and this time it really did feel like sometimes loosing power. It has gotten worse since then that i was driving, don't recall the mph, but it must of been around 50 - 60 mph cause i was on the freeway.the whole engine sporadically, in less than a split second, turns off then on. All the electric panel and the front dashboard and the whole car's electrical system turns off/on in a "blink of an eye". It made the car make an erratic and sudden stop, like if i had put the brakes completely or the engine just stopped that split second. Then it went back on and still driving. After that it did it about 2 more times like around those mins i was driving, about mins apart. After this happened, it's been getting worse and now the power shuts off completely and i have to drive to the side with no power on car. Then suddenly gets power again and i just start it again. I've checked the cables of batteries and they keep telling me i can't get the car checked for codes cause the engine light keeps getting reset since it looses power completely and they can't get any codes unless the engine light is lit up. Sometimes turning signal or putting the brakes or lights on make itstop or loose power completely.

The battery is often drained and continues to do so all the timei've researched it on the internet and many owners of the 2002 have the same problem, possibly the ignition switch relay. Many have replaced battery, alternator and problems continue. My car is currently draining and dying all the timei have purchased a jump starter for my car. I have to jump my car every time i use it.

Alot of problems with this car.

1) engine light seems to come on at least once a month2)fan knob for heating/air conditioner does not work on 1 or 2, it will only work on 3 or 4.this is a new problem.

Speedometer on 2002 hyundai is defective, the dial just stops working dropping to zero for periods of time - i spoke to the dealership if my car had under 65,000 miles they would fix it free (which seemed to be an awareness of the issue in may car & others).

Doors lock remote wont unlock car if i use the key to the door alarm goes off and i cant shut it off.

Computer failed three times.mechanics could not diagnose.finally was replaced.

My 2002 hundai sonata blk 4 door automatic. I started to get in the car thurs morning 2/15/07 at 4am. The key in the ignition would not go in. I had the car towed to my local mechanic. He did advice to put a new battery in the car. He said it was time for a replacement. I have been going to him for some time. And find him very reputable in the area. However, the tow man also could not put the key in the ignition. When i picked up the car at his shop the key went in. Battery works great. So the next morning2-16-07 the ignition would not go in again.i called my dealer and had the vehicle towed there. They said it didn't do that for them that the car was fine. They tried the key all day. They said they would repair the vehicle if the problem occurred at the time of testing the situation there.the car is under a policy of warranty for 60,000.00 miles. However, i could give them $160.00 to open up the ignition to the tumbler. I feel that if its under warranty that they should repair the problem. There only suggestion was to tow it again if it persists. I said what if i get stranded, and yes, i have nocell phone. They said just call the 800# anways for tow. So i wasn't satisfied at grapponies in concord nh. So i asked auto fair in manchester, they said the same thing. I think that its hard to believe that the tow man had the same problem as myself. And that we have to see if it happens for them, that they will repair at no cost at that time. When its' under the warranty. My feeling is that both dealerships that are local don't want to eat the part for inventory, if there is nothing wrong w/the chip in the tumbler. So i guess i have to just cross my fingers to make sure it doesn't happen. Grappine did make me a new key for the ignition. So i'm a frustrated consumer in manchester, nh.

My car started getting erratic idling and then the engine light started to turn on. I got the spark plugs and spark plug wires replaced and then it mild down after around 1wk after, then the erratic idling while on drive or on reverse started again. I own a 2002 hyundai sonata which has severe passenger side engine cradle rust. It would not pass vehicle inspection. The mechanic has suggested welding the frame to "bandage" the problem. I have read the other stories from owners of the same car and believe something should be done before there are deaths related to this defect. I am afraid to drive my car, it's like waiting for something to happen. My son also drives my car on occasion.

The contact owns a 2002 hyundai sonata.while driving 40 mph, the service engine soon light illuminated.on hot days (90 degree weather), the light illuminates and remains lit.however, in cooler weather, once the vehicle is turned off and restarted, the service engine soon light dims.the dealer stated that the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign id number 04v178000 (fuel system, gasoline:storage:tank assembly).the current mileage was 40,300 and failure mileage was 40,000.

Subject:2002 hyundai sonata.i have two problems ones the airbag light the other is engine light on.these could lead to a serios injury accident, if airbags dont work or if i cant stop car because engine dies!i know someone else that has the same problems with hers.my warranty has expired, but they should be responsible to fix both problems!anyway my main problem is the engine light that stays on,the car dies whenever it wants.i think this is a common problem with these cars and they dont want to fix .please look into it for all sonata owners, this should be a recall fix!thank you!

I recently took my 2002 hyundai sonata to kroger gas station to fill up my tank that was on 1/4 full.however, when i got there and started to pump my gas it started out by only pumping out $0.05 of gas before the pump clicked off.then it only was pumping $0.03 of gas before it clicked off.i tried to gingerly squeeze the handle to make it pretty much drip out, but that was not working either because it kept shutting off.i ended up going to a bp gas station bc i thought maybe it could have been the kroger pump, but the same thing happened.i ended up pumping $16 of gas which took me about 10 minutes to do!i have 71,000 miles on my car and just started having this problem 2 days ago.gas will not pump more then a few cents before it shuts off and i am worried that i will run out of gas as well because i don't want to fill it up either if people have problem with gas spewing out.

Fuel tank has split in half due to poor welding. Seems to be very similar to the issue with 1998 hyundai sonata. 3-4 gallons of gas leaked onto the ground within a few hours.

We had our vehicle warrantied for the rotten frame on our vehicle last year. At that point you would think hyundai would have warned us that our brake lines were swiss cheese just like our frame, these cars rot out, the entire vehicle is a death trap. The brake lines broke 3 times in the past 6 months after sections were already replaced. These vehicles need all the brake and fuel lines replaced immediately!!! this is not routine maintenance and should be recalled immediately!! the power steering line rotted out 5 years ago, this car was made out of really crappy metal. Dangerous vehicle. Everything on this vehicle is rotted out beyond what is normal, the wheels, the brake drums, everything on these vehicles rot to the point of swiss cheese. After 10 years these vehicles are very unsafe. Our vehicle only has 50,000 miles on it.

My vehicle had a recall on it in 2004 for the fuel system, gasoline storage and fuel system, gasoline: storage: tank assembly.according to the home office the valve fix was installed on my vehicle in 2005, i have no record of the installation.in 2011 my vehicle broke down and i had it towed to a shop.it turned out to be the fuel pump, so i had it replaced with a new fuel pump i purchased at an auto supply shop. After the installation of the new fuel pump my vehicle would hesitate to start, the gas was taking to long to get to the injectors.after researching i found out about the recall not remembering anything about it or having a valve installed.my question is on such an important recall why isn't there notice at the auto supply stores on vehicles and parts on recall.a raised flag if you will, so when i(someone) go to purchase the new fuel pump a notice would have come up about the recall.now the hyundai corporation refuse to fix this very serious problem without cost to me. I think it is hyundai responsibility to get the word out in every avenue available out there about the recall.they knew the fuel pump was bound to fail one day and had to be replaced.going back to the dealer (who was the only one who knew about the recall) is an option not the only option.

Was driving 2002 sonata with child in car daughter got dizzy from gas fumesgas tank was leaking from top of tank, called hyundai motor corp said car wasn't covered out of warranty, took it to the dealer was told car gas tank had to be dropped to find the problem, hyundai refused to pay for tank to be dropped, finally took it to be fixed at a local service person ,found the gas tank was leaking from the middle of the tank at the half way mark,he found the tank was leaking to a stress crack on the tank,i find this to be a safety issue regarding thismatter, there is a safety regarding stress cracks on the sonata please call me at [xxx].information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

Not many seem to know the solution here.after much research online and going to a mechanic site... I spent $250 on a canister,,, valve... And filter... That was suppose to fix the problem.no go there. So now i much contact hyundai again.... After their only advice was to bring it to a dealer.the dealer sold me the parts and said that this would fix it. Just want to point out that there are many consumer's online that are searching for an answer.imagine all of a sudden.... Your car that you have maintained and kept in good shape... No longer lets you put gas in the tank.

2002 hyundai sonata, when fueling vec constantly cut off the fueling takes about 10 - 15 min's to fuel with a 1/4 tank of gas in the vec before re-fueling. This happens no matter what station i'm re-fueling.

Problem filling gas to the gas tank.it shuts off several times when i put gas.

Engine light keeps coming on.took for repair and the code states there is a problem with the air/fuel mixture.auto repair shop asked if we turned the gas cap atleast 3 turns after last fill--yes we did.we previously were not able to pump gas the pump would shut off everytime we tried to pump.auto repair replaced charcoal filters in the neck of the fuel tank has run fine since this engine light started.

We have been having the car 4 years when we first got the car there was a strong gas smell and still does when we took it to dealership. They couldn't find problem. Know i find this so now i know what the problem is and i'mtrying to take care of it.

No concern with incident. Concern with defects with fuel tanks and fuel tank functions.

On 10/10/07 my wife drove approximately 8 miles home from work and parked her 2002 hyundai sonata in the garage.about 5 minutes later she noticed the smell of gasoline in the house, and returned to the garage to investigate.gas was pouring from the gas tank fill door on the car.the garage floor had a 6' diameter puddle under the car.she opened the garage door and backed the car out onto the driveway and positioned a catch pan under the car.approximately 1/2 gallon of gas was in the pan after she opened the filler cap to relieve the pressure.the car had less than 3/4 tank of gas at the time.we delivered the car thedealer that night for repair.they returned the car on 10/12 after replacing a canister and valve assembly under warranty.this is the second time this has happened, with the first time being approximately 18 months earlier, also covered under warranty.we feel very lucky that we didn't have an explosion or fire, which would have been a likely event with the amount of raw gas and fumes in the garage had we had a gas water heater.it is now four days later and we still have not gotten the smell of gasoline out of the house and garage.my wife is also afraid to park the car in the garage.just to add to the whole experience, the service writer was rude to my wife when she picked up the car, and we now have a dent in the left rear door.

Can't put gas in my tank, i would have to slowly put it in and sometimes i only can get 4-6 dollars although i have driven all day and my gas hand states that i am on empty. I really feel that this is a safety hazard, i could possible run out of gas while driving and cause a collision, or just over flow my gas tank, this i am very, very concern about. Please help me.

Vehicle was taken to dealer for fuel cut valve recall. Since new fuel cut valve was installed vehicle will not start after refueling. Dealer replaced new fuel cut valve, problem recurred. Dealer can not duplicate failure. Failure has occurred with the consumer after every refuel with no exceptions.

When attempting to fill gas tank the pump continues to shut off after pumping only small amounts of gasoline. Which prevents me from filling my vehicle. I have made no attempts to repair attempted to fill the vehicle at several service stations with the same results.

Gas tank will not normally accept gas and clicks off every 5 cents worth that is pumped. After 3 gallons and 15 minutes later, the tank spits out the gas.this problem is so chronic the attendants at costco gas told me many sonatas have this issue.recall or class action lawsuit?

The door handle on my 2002 hyundai sonata cut my hand when getting out of the vehicle and once when i put my arm up on it while driving.i eventually filed down the sharp edge of the chrome to prevent it from happening again. I realize that this has been recalled.

The contact owns a 2002 hyundai sonata. The contact stated that the driver front door handle failed and the chrome coating fractured and separated from the door handle. The vehicle was recently repaired under nhtsa campaign number: 09v171000 (latches/locks/linkages) but the failure recurred. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure and current mileage was 180,000.

I have a sonata 2.7 v6 (2002 model) automatic transmission. The major 2 problems that i have faced with the car are:1. The front door latches are badly lacerated and i have already injured my finger once. The parts need to be replaced.2. The tcs display comes on and stays on forever and the gear does not move beyond the first. This is in spite of switching the tcs lever off. This is used to happen twice a day earlier. But now it is a permanent feature.

Passenger inside door handle peeling and leaving jagged edges that cut the hands.two people have suffered cuts from this door handle.

The contact owns a 2002 hyundai sonata.the vehicle was parked when the contact observed that the front passenger and rear driver side interior door handles were defective.the chrome handles exhibited excessive cracks, peeling and sharp edges as a result of continuous use.the contact received a recall notification letter, nhtsa campaign id number 09v171000 (latches/locks/linkages;doors;latch). An authorized dealer performed the recall repairs. The front passenger and rear driver side door handles were replaced. The other two door handles were not defective and the technician affixed chrome tape on the handles, possibly to avoid the consequence. The contact was displeased with the tape remedy. The failure mileage was 25,000 and the current mileage was 54,000. Updated 9/23/09 updated 09/28/09.

Both front doors inside handles have chrome plating peeling at seam.this presents a hazard because the seam is at the top portion of the handle and cut my wife's finger.

The metallic tape finish on the passenger door handle is peeling off, creating sharp edges. This has resulted in several cuts to hand as it slides over the razor sharp edge when opening the door.

Single vehicle rollover; drivers' door unlatched and came open during the rollover.

The contact owns a 2002 hyundai sonata.the vehicle was parked when the contact observed the interior front driver chrome door handle exhibited a cracking and separation. There was a sharp edge on the chrome plate surface.the driver injured a finger on the defective door handle. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer for inspection. There was a recall under nhtsa campaign id number 09v171000. The contact experienced the identicalfailures as mentioned in the recall defect. However, the vin was excluded from the recall. The vehicle has not been repaired at this time.the failure mileage was unknown. The current mileage was 124,000.js

My son was operating the vehicle and was making a left turn. During the turn, the right front wheel buckled under and the vehicle became inoperable. Vehicle was towed to a repair facility. They found that there was significant corrosion in the sub-frame which caused it to fail. I have done some research on nhtsa site and it appears that campaign 09v124000 describes the issue.i have contacted hyundai. They have instructed me to have to vehicle delivered to local dealer for inspection to determine if it is covered under a recall program. Their first response was to tell me that the recall was only covering certain states, kentucky not being one of them. When i told them i had purchased the car used and had no way of knowing what other states the vehicle had been in, they agreed to examine the vehicle. I believe the vehicle repair should be covered since the damage is as described in the recall notice.

The contact owns a 2002 hyundai sonata. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle would veer to the right and would also fail to shift into gear. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who diagnosed that the front passenger side axle was fractured due to corrosion of the frame. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. Traveling north on interstate 15 at 75 mph, with the car on cruise control.at the start of a curve the car started to accelerate.it reached over 5,000 rpms.stepping on the brake accomplished nothing.i shut off the cruise control it continued to accelerate over 6,000 rpms i shut the engine and finally got control of the car.during this time i had gone off the highway down a ravine hitting boulders and rocks and into the desert and damaging my car.i re-started the car and the engine sounded weird.i shut the engine again and waited for a longer period before restarting.it sounded better so i shifted the car into gear and started forward slowly.there was a transmission firm nearby.they put the car up on a computer, and i was told that the code read p.o. 12.the mechanic told me that he unwound the cruise cable by hand and it should be safe to drive as long as i did not use the cruise control.i brought the car to the nearest hyundai dealer and they said that the code had been erased.later during hyundai investigation i was told that the mechanic said he had removed the code in order to test the cruise control.on my return home i brought the car back to hyundai and they said they could do nothing.i am thankful that my wife and i were not harmed. All i want is hyundai to accept the responsibility of fixing the car.hyundai was not helpful in anyway and instead acted as if i made up the entire incident.they told me a decision would be made in 4-6 weeks.after the 6 week period i contacted hyundai it is still under investigation. Now t hey tell me there is no time period for a decision.can you please advise me what i should do next.

The contact owns a 2002 hyundai sonata. The contact stated that entire rear subframe had rusted. The contact called the dealership and was advised to take the vehicle in for diagnosis. The vehicle had not been repaired for the problem at the time the complaint was filed. Also, while driving at 40 mph, the vehicle would drop from fourth gear to first gear suddenly. The vehicle was taken to the dealership and repairs were performed on the censors; however, the problem was not fixed. The failure mileage was approximately 95,000. The current mileage was approximately 112,000.

Transmission failed causing semi to almost rear end my vehicle due to a faulty sensor. Manufacturer refuses to fix problem although it is warranted. Similar failures will cause deaths. I have notified and requested assistance through hyundia's consumer complaint department to no avail. There will no doubt be a death caused by this malfunction in the powertrain.

While sitting invehicle with the seat belt on, if consumer makes any kind of movementseat belt tighten up. Consumer has to unhook the seat belt and fasten it.this is very unsafe whendriving or in an emergency situation.ts.

The button on the safety belt latch is large and right at the position where your elbow rests by your side, and when it hits the latch, it pops open the latch. Many times on the road, my wife has accidently been unlatched from her safety belt. It shouldn't be that easy to open the latch. If it does it when you're just driving along, i'd be afraid of what would happen if a passenger was jarred in an accident.

I have a hyundai sonata.its 2002 with 50,000 miles on it.the first time it gave me trouble, it was making a grinding sound while driving to work.the mechanic changed my caliber on one side of the car and replaced my hoses.next month same sound started again.my mechanic changed the other caliber.six months later.i started hearing that same sound and the brakes started locking.the mechanic didn't see anything wrong.two weeks later, i lost my brakes while driving on interstate 10.i was able to coast to a stop without any incidents.i had my car towed to my mechanic.i was told i damaged the master cylinder.he put all new parts in my car (brake shoes, pads, calibers, master cylinder, etc.) and tested it.the next day while driving on i-10, it started locking up again.it has baffled my mechanic.my car is still in the shop.i have spent over $1500.00 on repairs of these brakes, not to mention the rental fees of cars for transportation.there must be an answer to what is causing my brakes to no function properly.

Brake lights does not go off. Been repaired by hyundiadealership and still does not work.

I was going straight on a little street when i stepped on the brakes... I felt the brake pad move out of place... And couldn't brake so i used the emergency brake to stop...but still don't know what to do...?

Problems with brake equipment on hyundai sonata.*mrwhile braking the consumer heard a noise front he rear of the vehicle.over time the noise progressed into a grinding noise.the vehicle was taken to the dealer at 19400 miles and the consumer was informed that the rear brake pads needed to be replaced.the technician showed the consumer the corroded and dirty surfaces that the brake pad holder rested on.this surface is horizontal and does not allow the surface to drain or clean itself.the brake rotors were replaced by the dealer but the consumer was charged $160.for the labors and brake pads. The consumer believes that having the brake replaced at 19000 miles is unreasonable and request reimbursement.

Car makes a loud screeching sound when coming to a stop.dealer has inspected the brakes, and says they are at 90%.dealer has been unwilling to investigate the source of the screeching sound.

The brake lines from engine to the back of the car need to be replaced because one of the attachments (holding the brake lines in place underneath the car) got rusted and corrosion. Then it caused the brake line to get rusted and brake fluid started to leak pretty bad.is it normal for the brake lines to get rusted??should i report to hyundai?the brake fluid reservoir went empty so quickly and i found the leaking spot. It squirts pretty bad when i apply the brake pedal.the leaking spot is underneath the car where the back seats are located.i need some advise before i start doing something. Thank you.

I was driving my vehicle under normal conditions on a major highway.upon approaching an exit i applied the brakes to reduce my speed.the brake pedal went all the way to the floor and consequently i engaged my emergency brake to stop the vehicle.the brake warning light did not come on until i brought the vehicle to a complete stop.no accident ensured as a result.i had my vehicle towed to a repair facility where repairs were made.repairs consisted of a complete replacement of all brakes lines since they were all rusted and corroded.old parts are not available.a few months prior to this incident all the power steering lines required replacement due to rust and corrosion.the complete exhaust system currently requires replacement due to rust and corrosion (system is leaking).

When the brake was applied a drumming sound was heard in the rear.the next occurrence a drumming sound was heard with a grinding sound.*tc the was a lot of corrosion and dirt collected on the brake assembly due to salt and sand applied to the roads in the winter. *sc

Consumer is having problems with the braking system.*jg

Vehicle has problems with front vibration. *mrthe vehicle veered left and the consumer lost control of steering. The cause was found to be broken u-bolt. The vehicle began to vibrate from front end while the consumer was driving and the cause was determined to be front left axle failure, which was replaced. Brakes constantly squeak and pulsate, but the dealer could not duplicate the problem.

When movingconsumer foot off brake pedal it would pulsate. Driver has made contact with the dealership.

During inspection dealership informed the consumer of corroded front/rear brake rotors.dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem.

Dt: rotors have gone bad.the brakes pump back when brakes are depressed.the dealer turned the rotors at 13624 miles and within 1000 miles the rotors warped again.the dealer was unable to find the cause of the problem.another service center indicated that eh rotors needed to be replaced.

Hyundai sonota 2002 had front rotors replaced at 10,500 miles due to warping.front pads were in excellent condition.at 43,500, was told by dealership all 4 rotors were warped during state inspection.so, only 33,000 miles on new front rotors.both front and rear brake pads were still in excellent condition (virtiually new).this documented on the cars state inspection report done by the dealership.dealership contacted local hyundai rep who refused to replace rotors.reason, excessive braking by driver so not faulty materials from hyundai.two reports don't coincide.excessive braking and excellent brake pasds.local rep did not come into dealership to view condition of car or do any investigating into potential faulty manufacturing materials. Owner filed a complaint with hyundai consumer affairs. Credit the dealership for complimentary cutting of rotors but history shows rotors will warp again after cutting.

2002 hyundai, sonata has 28,000 miles.have had to have rotors replaced 3 times since 11000 miles.car shakes after rotors have been on car for about 4 or 5 thousand miles.

Front disc brake rotorswe have two 2002 hyundai sonatas, model gls 6 cylinder.both cars have had ongoing problems with front rotors warping and having difficulty braking to an emergency stop.the dealer has replaced rotors on each vehicle once, and within an 18 month period, the problem re-occurs.

The brakes make an extremely loud screeching sound, mainly when breaking. It is loud enough to attract quite a bit of attention. It scares pedestrians and other vehicles. It sounds similar to the warning sound made by worn brakes. We have made complaints to the dealer on 6 separate occasions. They said that they have glazed our brakes and replaced our brake pads and that the problem cannot be fixed. They advised us that all hyundais do this because of government regulations on the content of brake pads. I've also called the hyundai customer service number and they also told me that nothing can be done and that this is normal. The brakes make a noise that sounds like they need to be replaced- they can't be safe. It is very stressful driving a vehicle with brakes that sound like they could quit at any time.mr

Dt: the contact owns a 2002 hyundai sonata lx. The brake line was attached to where it was suppose to be attached and it rubbedagainst thecv boot, causing the brake line and the cv boot to fail. The contactbrought car last octoberto dealer because the cv boot failed and it was replaced under warranty. Currently, the brake line and the cv boot failed, causing vehicle to hit a garage. The dealership said it lookedas if the brake line came loose from where it was suppose to be, andit was not covered under warranty.the consumer had to replaced the brake line with a temporary one in order to take the vehicle to the dealer for repair.the delaer claimed that whoeverr replaced it installed in improperly.the contact feltthat this happened because of the brake line was rubbing against the cv boot. She replaced the brake line out of pocket. Her husband felt that this was a design problem. Thebrake line was securely fastened even after the brake failure.two bootsand one brake line were replaced.

On cold mornings where the temperature would drop below 30, i was experiencing a loss of brake ability. This would only happen the first time i drove the car in the morning and always on the second or third tap of the brake pedal. I went to my dealership in november/december 2002 and they drained the brake line and told me it was fixed. It was not and i had to go back. This last time i could not stop in traffic and had to roll thru a busy intersection. The brake pedal would actually freeze up or lock in the "up" position in the car, therefore not allowing me to press down to stop. The emergency brake would work. My dealer had the car for more than a week before he was able to find the problem and fix it this second time. I believe he said it was a defect in a specific part. He told me "booster vacuum line check valve frozen shut" and he replaced the booster hose. If this was a manufacturers defect, i am concerned other sonata owners may experience this problem and i felt i should report this to your agency.

Subframe is rotten and broken

Corrosion of subframe, causing it to break and then catch fire to the car under the hood, destroying wiring and hoses.

2002 hyundai sonata failed at 6 mph turning a city street corner. The axle and ball joint fell off, taking the right front wheel with it. This car was 'repaired' a few years earlier when it was recalled for undercarriage rust. They sprayed a rubberized coating on the undercarriage, and told me i was good to go! we all know, there is no way to stop rust.

The power steering line on the under side of the car that runs by the frame of the car rotted away and caused a power steering failure.about one month after having this repaired i received a recall letter that the frame needed to be inspected due to corrosion.i asked about the power steering line being part of this and was told no.this power steering line runs right along the side of the part of the frame that was inspected and sprayed for the recall, how can this power steering line not be covered by the recall?

On 11/3/08 i filed odi#10248441 regarding rotted right side sub-frame on my 2002 hyundai sonata which was repaired by dealer on 11/11/08 as a 1 time "goodwill" replacement.during replacement of sub-frame dealer damaged and replaced flexpipe and bolts.car was returned and started leaking fluid which was found to be power steering fluid.we monitored and replaced fluid but steering was difficult and made noise mostly on start-up and turning corners.on 12/1/08 we had to have the car towed - we lost the power steering completely and it would no longer hold fluid.dealer stated that power steering rack mount was completely cracked and had to be replace at a cost of over $1,000.we are refusing to pay for repair stating that cracked steering mount is related to rot problem and is the dealers responsibility.12/3/08 we opened a case with hyundai consumer complaints . Based on information researched on this site and other related sites the cracked power steering mount is common and related torot problem. Currently waiting for a response from hyundai.car only has 41,400 miles and we have already had to replace brakes, tires, heat sensor, and sub-frame in addition to normal maintenance.

I backed out of the driveway and the subframe on the passenger side collapsed and the tie rod and cv joint came loose. The steering went out. A certified frame mechanic said the sub frame rusted out.

Was driving down the when i heard a pop sound that had came from the curbside of the vehicle then the car started pulling to the right side of the road and did not really think to much about because thought needed to just have alignment done to the vehicle then next friday i had take the car to have the alignment done on the vehiclethey called me and said that the sub-frame of the vehicle was rusted in half and that it was unsafe to drive. I looked up the recalls on the vehicle and seen where it had a recall for the sub-frame rusting and set up a apt . To have it taken care of but they are saying that since my car is not registeredin one of the salt-belt states that they are not going to honor the recall even though the rust is there and the sub-frame is rusted in half and the lower control arm is rusted off. Ref #[xxx].information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

My son was driving the vehicle at 45 mph and heard a loud pop in the right front end of the vehicle and immediately afterwards the vehicle veered of to the right and on to the side of the road he was able to maintain control somewhat but if there had been pedestrians in that area i am not sure there would have not been serious consequences, the car was driven slowly to the nearest hyundai dealer for assessment and after assessment the dealer stated that the sub-frame has rusted out to the point that the right front wheel could become detached thereby possibly causing a potential catastrophic failure or loss of control of the vehicle and unknown consequences, dealer has submitted information to hyundai corp, the vehicle has an active recall on this particular safety defect. Recall #089 issued in april 2008. We are awaiting hyundais response as to the status of our recall request as of 08/01/12.

Steering problem.the car would difficult to turn and then it would steer fine.this went on for a couple of days.i moved the car one morning and there was a bolt on the ground which looked as if it was from the car.had the car towed to a repair shop.the diagnosis was the bolts on the rack and pinion were loose and one of the bolts was the one i found on the ground.the rack and pinion coming loose is a serious problem.

The contact owns a 2002 hyundai sonata. The contact stated while driving at 5 mph, the power steering stop working and as a result, the vehicle crashed into a barrier. There were no injuries. The driver side air bag deployed and the air bag warning lamp illuminated. Also, the contact mentioned that the vehicle was filled with smoke and there was no pressure on the air bag. The vehicle was towed to her resident. The vehicle had not been repaired. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who stated that there was nothing wrong with the air bag. The manufacturer was not made aware of the problem. The approximate failure mileage was 156,000.

1st week of june 2014, noticed steering was making noises when turning. Checked psf and was low. Added and worked fine for about tree weeks. Then bam !!something busted behind engine. Lots of fluid between engine and firewall. Psf of coarse. Steering became extremely stiff and barely got the vehicle home. Lucky i didn't have an accident. Car wouldn't turn except with excessive force. And i'm 76 yr f. I could have injured or killed myself or others under certain conditions like much higher speeds. How's anyone to know something like will occur at any given totally unexpected moment. I know of a recall about under carriage or sub-frame rust and serious parts breaking off. Something gave and something broke down there and the vehicle is now inoperable.

Our son who was driving our hyundai 2002 sonata noticed that the steering wheel was loose and it felt like the car was pulling and needed an alignment.we took it in to have an alignment and the mechanic called us and told us they were unable to do an alignment and that the problem was much more serious than that; they told us that the cradle rusted through and that it was unsafe to drive.because of this it also did damage to the tires.we now have a vehicle that is unable to be driven because it is not safe.i shutter every time i think what may have happened to him or his friends if he had been on the road or god forbid driving down the interstate.we live in a state where snow is a part of our lives; we always worry about driving on snow and ice but we should not also have to worry that our vehicle's cradle will rust through potentially causing harm or even death.

The contact owns a 2002 hyundai sonata.while driving at an unknown speed, the vehicle would not drive straight and kept pulling to the left and right.the vehicle was taken to the dealer and they stated that the frame needed to be replaced.prior to the failure, the contact noticed that the vehicle had numerous alignment issues.the current and failure mileages were 144,000.

My wife was driving home from work on a county road doing approx. 45 mph.the front right tire suddenly tilted 50 degrees inward and she lost control of the auto.after nearly missing a telephone pole, she plowed into a corn field and came to a sudden stop.she suffered a sprained wrist from steering wheel "whip" and bruised her knee in the accident.upon examination by the mechanic ,he found that the a frame on the right side had broke in half.the metal in the frame had rusted from the inside out making it difficult to see by previous under-carriage repairs, such as tire change, oil change etc.the car has had superb maintenance throughout its historyand has been bought and sold within the same family since being bought new by the son in 2002.we love the car and have enjoyed the 123,000 miles of driving but are very disappointed with hyundai because we have no record of ever receiving a recall on this vehicle.hyundai has decided to repair the vehicle free of charge but has not said whether they will repair the body damage or the transmission if damaged from the incident.we could not get move the shifter after the incident.

On monday evening 01/18/2010 my wife and i left our home with our 2002 hyundai sonata we drove no more then 3 tenths of a mile when the steering wheel starting pulling very hard to the right we then turned around and drove back toward home but only made it about 2 tenths of a mile before the front right wheel collapsed bringing us to a dead stop in the middle of the road. Thankfully we were only going about 20-25 mph the police were called for traffic and the car was towed to r.j shore automotive branford ct 06405 the next morning the owner of r.j.auto informed me that my front engine sub-frame had failed due to corrosion, and showed me a print-out of a recall from hyundai dated april 14, 2009 then stated he called the hyundai dealer in branford ct 06405 but the dealer refused to pick up the car so i had to pay $81.41 to have the car towed to branford hyundai. The staff at the hyundai had no answers and continued to state you will have to call the corporate office, so i did. The employee chris stated that there were 200.000 vehicles involved in this recall campaign #089 or #09v124000 and we have not mailed out all of the notices (shame on them because it's been almost a year and if we were on the highway we could have died) the employee then called the branford hyundai and was told that the car would take 1 or 2 weeks to fix and no loaner or rental vehicle will be provided i said that is unacceptable and demanded a loaner still the answer was no but somehow they managed to fix my car on 01/20/2010 when i picked my vehicle up at 420pm on 01/20/2010 my wife and i were not allowed to view what was repaired and was told that they bent over backwards to fix this car quickly because of my call to hyundai corporate i stated (bent over backwards, someone could have died, from this accident) the manager bob guevera, and a chris vailette then called the police and told us to never come back again, to have the corporate office fix my car next time.

I was driving on a highway with my 2002 hyundai sonata with a 2.7 ltr. 6 cyl. Engine, when i got off at my exit i took a right turn with no problem but when i went to take an immediate left turn i totally lost my power steering making it very hard to steer. When i looked under the hood i found that the metal linehad rusted through and burst. This is only a 4 year old car.it was towed to garvey hyundai where they replaced the line.so i checked my wife's car which is identical except the color and found that her line is in the same rusted condition but had not yet burst so she called lia hyundai by our house ,told them what happened to mine and that hers is in the same corroded condition and they said they will not replace it under warranty until it also burst even if it is corroded. I feel this is a potentially dangerous situation as she may not be able to steer the car if it does burst and when mine burst it sprayed all over under the car, getting on the converter, muffler and tailpipe creating a potential fire hazard. I do not have the old part but the line runs along the frame and where it rotted they have a piece of rubber hose to protect the line but it also caused it to prematurely rot the metal line under the rubber hose so the line burst. Due to the fact the car is only 4 years old and both are identical carsrotting the same way, i feel this is a potentially dangerous defect that is going to happen to others because of the design and if someone can't steer the car after it blows they could have an accident or a fire could start due to it getting on the exhaust. I would like to get a response soon as my wife is concerned about it happening to her. Thank you.

Power steering line rusted out and blew. Under a protective rubber sleeve. It blew out while driving.

Theinsulated piece of tubing that covers a small portion of the power steering lineshould be replaced with a breathable type of product. My power steering fluid is leaking and it is not due to wear and tear on the vehicle. That portion of insulation on the power steering line retains moisture, therefore it causes that portion of the power steering line to rust and the fluid leaks out. This seems to be a manufacturing defect especially when the car has only59,200 miles on it.every two days i put in power steering fluid until i get an answer in reference to the warranty.this line has to be replaced.

Power steering loss during operation caused by power steering line failue. Power steering line failed due to oxidation. Oxidation was caused by design flaw that traps water draining from airconditioner evaporator in rubber tube designed to protect power steering line from road hazard damage.

My car made a loud thud while i was driving and then i heard my tire rubbing the wheel well.i had a very hard time steering and called my local garage.i looked on the internet and saw the specs on the recall and called my complaint into hyundai.i then had my vehicle towed to the nearest dealer where it sits awaiting repair.

Corrosion of the front sub-frame. Ea08016 front sub-frame corrosion. You issued a recall for "salt-belt" states, i live in northern virginia with the same salt issue as dc and west virginia.

The chrome plating on the interior door handles peeled away and cut passenger's hands.in 2009 the handles were "repaired" by a hyundai dealer, but by 2013 the chrome plating was again beginning to peel away and cut passenger hands.hyundai america and the dealer both claim the problem is resolved, and there is only a 12 month warranty.i believe it is improper to claim an issue subject to a recall would be "fixed" by creating the same hazard with the same parts.this issue is referred to as "hyundai recall no. 093" in http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/owners/searchresults?searchtype=id&targetcategory=r&searchcriteria.nhtsa_ids=09v171000.

On july 26th, 2005, i was meeting a co-worker for lunch when i noticed that the paint on the front facia covering the bumper on my 2002 hyundai sonata was bubbling and starting to peel.after work that same day, i attempted to contact the salesperson who sold me the vehicle at the dealership.i spoke the service manager and had him walk out to inspect the facia.his first question to me was whether i had the vehicle repainted.i told him i had not!he then asked me if i have ever brought my car to a touchless car wash, which i have for many, many years here in town.he then stated that because of the 7500 psi caused by the high pressure water that they were not at fault and that it was not a manufacturer defect.i asked why this was not occurring on the body of the car or on the rear facia, and he stated that he did not know.dissatisfied with this response, i called hyundai motor america in fountain valley, ca at 800-633-5151 that evening (8/5/05) and spoke with a gentleman.after telling him of the situation, he then stated that i should try to get the car fixed at another dealership!on monday, august 8th, i received a phone call from hyundai motor america representative, who stated that the dealership was not going to remedy this situation. I received a response from the bbb auto line dated august 30th, stating that my vehicle exceeded the mileage requirements for filing with their program.my vehicle had 27,500 miles at the time of the complaint.apparently, the bbb auto line agreement with hyundai is to only accept claims within two years or 24,000 miles, whichever comes first (see document hyundai-ny 8/2000).hyundai warranty expressly states warranty against paint defects for 3 years, 36,000 miles.i have submitted a complaint to the nys attorney generals office as of 9/7/2005.

The vehicle started making a noise and driving weird. It looked like one tire was pointed straight and the other tire turned slightly. I stopped at a gas station to see what was wrong and they said the a frame was almost rusted into. I had already had the metal in the rear of the car replaced from being rusted out near were the shock attaches. I have researched and seen where several sonatas have been recalled due to severe rust issues. The body even has been rusting badly. The bigger concern is the frame. I am afraid to drive it now. Do not know what recourse i have. This happened while driving. The car is now parked and am afraid to move it, even to a garage.

Severe crack in the rear subframe which is corroded and rusted throughout. The rear tire is sticking out and the car swerves and is dangerous to drive.

Paint is flaking off of all the door handles on my 2001 sonata gold color. When it was only happening on one door, my dealer said it was not there problem. Now that it is happening on all of them, it is obvious to me that it is a defect. Has anyone else had this problem and could they get it resolved?

Repeated use of interior door handles on my 2002 hyundai sonata caused wear of the chrome plating and handles cracked and then had sharp edges which cut myself and some of my passengers and then i had to tape them.i took car back to 2 dealers, 1 didn't respond and the other fixed the problem with a bandaid, literally.they fixed it by putting a chrome adhesive pad over each of them, when i drove the car out of the lot and it was parked in the sun, the chrome plated adhesive strips came loose.i feel the need to fully replace all the defective door handles.this didn't resolve the problem and only made it worse with the doorhandles being sticky and unable to open at times until you stick the adhesive strip back on.i love my car and hyundai but don't think they did the right thing with just masking the problem to save a little money. Please help!no deaths, but there were three people who were injured by cutting through the skin and would have been in bad shape had i taken a hemophiliac with me at some point.

Dt*: the consumer stated the interior material on the passenger's door handle of the vehicle caused minor injuries to a child. The vehicle was taken to the dealership where they replaced the door handles. The consumer is now having the same typeof problem with the driver's side door. Updated 3/9/2006 -

Hyundai sonata 2002 outside and inside painted door handle peeling causing injury to hands. Injury more cause by inside door handles due to sliver painted door handles. Becomes very sharp once peeling.

Chrome plated interior door handle on driver's side began peeling, leaving very sharp edges, which cut my finger. We covered the handle with tape to protect from future cuts. I looked for a recall notice on this part and found one and called the dealership and was toldthat i would have to pay for this repair myself. I filed a complaint with nhtsa and was toldto contact hyundai. I did nothing since i couldn't afford the repair. In thepast 9 months, i have been the passenger more often than before and now the interior handle on the passenger side has same problem-peeling off, leaving sharp edges. Once again i nicked my finger onit. Recently had a repair done at the dealership andasked the adviser about the problemhe said he had no record of a recall. I found the recall online & showed him.he said i should call hyundai,.i spoke to a rep @ hyundai who told me that even though i may have a problem described in the recall my vehicle was manufactured in 10/2001, which means i don't really have the problem described in the recalli was furious. This is not an imaginary problem - i have cut my fingers twice.she said she would have someone call me back to discus further & that never happened. That was about 3 weeks ago. I don't care what the recall date says - my car has the exact problem described in the recall notice. The rep also told me the recall goes by the date the car was put into service, not the date manufactured of 10/01; she said the car was not put into service until 3/03-after the recall date.the recall says 1/28/02-3/22/03. Also i the car had to be put into service earlier than 03 because i bought it on 10/16/02.i don't understand why this isn't covered by the recall/campaign - whatever you want to call it. Both handles are peeling & unsafe! we are keeping this car so it is important. Just bought a new sonata.to replace another car.

While openingthe driver's door consumer noticed that the door handle was sharp. Consumer's hand was cut. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection, and mechanic determined that the door handle needed to be replaced, and he replaced it.however, the problem recurred.

My 2002 hyundai sonata failed stare inspection due to right front rot on subframe. I contacted my local hyundai dealer and they are going to repair problem. Until then, it will not pass inspection. I have already received a citation for it not being inspected . I am left with an uninspected and rotted car until they can take it in. Hyundai does notgive out loaner cars!

As i write this letter, my 2002 sonata is currently in the shop for repair of severe rusting and detachment of the sub frame. I was advised a week ago by the mechanic performing an inspection of the vehicle that my front drivers side axle bolt was cracked and needed repair. Having the extended hpp warranty, i brought it to the dealer whose eyes were wide with absolute terror when he told me how close to death i would have been had i not brought it in. He advised me that if i had driven the car another day, i would have been seriously injured or killed. Needless to say, i will be without my car for the next 2 weeks.my dealer is offering me a 'dealer rental rate' for a loaner car of $35 a day which i believe is adding insult to injury in light of the fact that i could have been killed. Are there any plans to recall this vehicle so that i may be eligible for a free rental car for my inconvenience?

Front sub frame broke againfor 2nd time on 2002 sonata.just stops abruptly and wheel collapses in an steering locks.hasbeen fixed by dealer twice now.

2002 hyundai sonata sub frame corrosion and front rt wheel collapsed. Local dealer covered cost of sub frame replacement, but charged me for a new sway bar. Front fender was pushed against passenger door, which hyundai would not fix, and car now has severe wobbling when driven, unlike before the corrosion. Hyundai says it's an alignment problem and my responsibility. I am wondering what recourse i have against hyundai, as the car was well maintained and drove smoothly before this damaged occurred. Lucky no one was hurt, since the wheel let go at a low speed.

My frame on my car rusted through leaving my car sitting on my tires literally! while driving through town.i have called the hyundai manufacturer and they took down information,i am now waiting on the decision if it will cost me anything or not.

The contact owns a 2002 hyundai sonata.while the vehicle was being inspected by the dealer, the contact was informed that there was a rust hole near the front passenger side subframe.the dealer stated that the hole needed to be repaired in order for the vehicle to pass inspection.the contact did not notice any differences beforehand.the vin was unknown.the current and failure mileages were 100,000.

I had my 2002 hyundai sonata in to repair a power steering line that had rusted out and was leaking when the shop discovered that the cradle had a fist sized hole in the right side of the cradle.

I own a 2002 hyundai sonata,on monday september 21st2009 i took my car in for a leaking power steering line.the mechanic who worked on my car told me i better get a new car,he told me my subframe was rotted and the car was unsafe to drive.

2002 hyundai sonata subframe failure.

2002 hyundai sonata, severe rot in the front passenger subframe.58,000 miles on car.it was not driveable so was towed to dealer.was not in accident but had severe alignment issues and power steering hose breakage as a result of the rot.was told by dealer that subframe would be replaced under warranty but all other repairs were my responsibility.

During an annual safety inspection a large hole was found in the front sub frame. The mechanic believed it was caused by the outflow of water from the air conditioning unit which ran over that area.

Engine cradle / cross member rusted through on passenger - side [right side] of undercarriage [3 inches?] .apparent engine leak from air conditioner despite regular [hyundai] maintenance.

Went to dealer for check engine light. I was told my subframe was rotting out. The dealer states they would replace the subframe under a " goodwill warranty" when asked if there was a recall or problems with the subframe of these cars i was told no.

The contact owns a 2002 hyundai sonata. While driving approximately 33 mph, the contact's vehicle struck a pothole. As a result, the contact veered to the right and crashed into another vehicle. The air bags deployed. The contact sustained a neck injury that required medical attention. A police report was filed. 1. Hit a pothole, day or two later noticed car was pulling to the right and making noise when turning.took it to a mechanic because i thought it needed an alignment2. Mechanic noticed large hole (2"+ diameter) with significant cracking in the right side subframe behind the wheel by lower control arm3. Attempting to contact hyundai motor america.

My 2002 hyundai sonata lx has the common problem of the subframe rotting out on the passenger side where the control arm mounts.i noticed the problem during an oil change and have taken the car off the road due to safety issues.the control arm has not let go yet, but i do not dare to drive the car due to the extent of the rust.i am going to be contacting hyundai to see about a warranty.

In a recent visit to hyundai dealer related to another matter i learned that my 2002 sonata was unsafe to drive due to a rusted out engine cradle on the passenger side.i have yet to get this fixed due to the price (est. $2500) and yet at the same time i realize the situation will only get worse.i have read on the internet where your agency is investigated this matter and also on the internet i learned of many other owners who have had accidents due engine cradle failure.the suspension gives way and wheels fall off, etc. In my opinion hyundai used inferior metal in their engine cradle and incorrectly designed the engine cradle system.i have been driving for more than 40 years and owned many makes and models of vehicles but never have i been faced with such a situation.i realize many parts have a limited life span but the engine cradle should have an extended life.my wife has a 1999 subaru with more miles than our sonata and which has been driven on the same road conditions with less care than we have given the sonata and yet her car does not have such an obvious and commonsafety issue.thank you for considering this important matter.i trust that you will move quickly to require hyundai to correct this matter before more lives are put in jeopardy and lost due to their oversight.

The contact owns a 2002 hyundai sonata. While driving approximately 5 mph, the engine fell through the cradle assembly and crushed the axle. There was no warning indicator illuminated. Prior to the failure, the contact heard a lot of squeaking while driving various speeds and making turns. The dealer was not called. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that there was no recall. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 155,000.

My right front wheel didn't feel right , took it to a service station to be looked at. They brought me in to see that the whole frame under the car is rusted. The bolts that hold up the axle and suspension were completely gone and there was a hole in the under carriage. The wheel was tilted and the inside of the tire was worn all the way down . There was nothing there to support the wheel.

My 2002 hyundai sonata began pulling hard to the right on 8/6/09 so i called the dealership to schedule maintenance thinking that there was a problem with my alignment. I was able to get an appointment on 8/10/09. When driving in traffic on 8/9/09 my car started to get out of control and then crashed into the curb. I was unable to drive it so i had to have it towed to the dealership. I found out that the subframe and axel were broken and that i would be expected to pay for the axel and labor.

The contact noticed that the front passenger side wheel was pointing outward. The vehicle was towed to an authorized dealer who stated that the subframe had rusted. The vehicle had not been repaired. The current and failure mileages were 122,050.

During vehicle routine maintenance of 2002 hyundai sonata, it was discovered that significant corrosion was observed in engine cradle. This corrosion presents a safety issue and hyundai refuses to replace the component because its out of warranty.

Brought my wife's car in for an oil change and she had complained there was a funny noise that had just started coming from under the car. I was informed when we went to pick it up that the frame close to the front right tire was rusted with a hole and looked it was cracking. My wife is a very cautious driver and we told that it was not due to any kind if impact, but it had just rusted at that spot.

The contact owns a 2002 hyundai sonata. While driving approximately 35 mph, the subframe fractured without warning. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The vehicle was serviced per nhtsa campaign number: 09v124000 (suspension); however, the remedy failed to repair the vehicle. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 133,000. The vin was not available.

While changing the ball bearing, the mechanic noticed that there was severe rusting on the front right side frame. He warned that the car would just collapse. There were 3-4 inch big holes in the frame. This could have caused fatal injury. The car is less than 7 year old for such severe rusting to occur.

Subframe rusted completely through. Luckily this was discovered during a repair of a power steering failure. This is a common complaint regarding the 1999-2004 sonata in high salt areas and hyundai is apparently replacing the frame out of warrant (mine was under an extended warranty anyway). I believe this should be a full recall to protect those who are otherwise unaware of this defect which has caused, in some cases, wheel separations. Dealer told me that the part had a large hole completely through the frame.

I am the original owner of this vehicle and i purchased this car from the dealer brand new. I always have my vehicles serviced per the manufacturermaintenance schedule. As iwas getting my90,000 mile service workon my vehicle, the service tech noticed / stated the engine cradle was coming apart ( holes ) due to rust; per the service tech, the cradle needs replacing andthe vehicle is unsafe to drive. I had the dealership replace the cradle ( cross-member); and perform a wheel alignment which i had to pay the dealership $2,200.00.

Took my car to shop today because the power steering was leaking, hard to turn on corners - this first appeared yesterday.i was hearing odd noises from under the car on the way to the shop.mechanic put car on lift and showed me how the engine cradle/frame is rusted through.they suspect the problem started above and worked through as i have been a fanatic about regular maintenance on this car - always with the same shop so they know me and the vehicle.now i'm waiting to see if hyundai will cover this.

I own a 2002 hyundai sonata with the engine cradle frame completely rusting out. Vehicle failed nh state inspection and is considered unsafe to drive at this point. Mileage: 123,000.

I have an 2002 hyundai sonata. My complete subframe rusted out a few years ago. The car was only 3 or 4 years old at the time. The complete subframe was replaced on a hush hush bases. I have the pics to prove it. Never will i buy another hyundai or kia never. My god my family could have been killed. But what do they care it's not their family.

2002 hyundai sonata/4dr sedan/2.4l au - right front sub-frame completely rotted out. Car was being checked for a leak and mechanic found damage.car was taken off the road until repaired. No injury or damage to person or property.

Purchased a 2002 hyundai sonata in 2006. On 6/25/2008 i received an oil change and when inspecting the undercarriage it was noted of a server rust hole on the sub frame assembly on the front of the car. The rust hole (while only about 1/4 to 1/8 of an inch across) stretches across the whole bottom of the sub-frame assembly. This is a very serious problem with a vehicle if the sub-frame is damaged.

The contact owns a 2002 hyundai sonata.while driving approximately 25 mph, the contact heard a noise while turning the vehicle.the passenger's side tire dislodged from the vehicle and the vehicle began smoking.a police report was filed.the vehicle was towed to the dealer and they stated that the failure was due to the subframe being corroded.the manufacturer informed her that nothing could be done until they received a diagnosis from the dealer.the vehicle is currently at the dealer awaiting repairs.the vin was unknown.the current and failure mileages were 97,000.

The contact owns a 2002 hyundai sonata. The contact stated that there was rust under the frame of his vehicle. The dealer stated that they have never seen any other vehicles with rust under the frame. The contact welded the rusted frame onto to the vehicle over a year ago. The contact received a recall notice; however, the dealer informed him that since he did such a good job welding the frame back together they didn't have to work on it. They also informed him that they are not going to replace the frame. The contact asked the dealer for a guarantee in writing that the frame would not break again. He also asked the dealer to replace the frame with a new frame. The vin is not available.the failure mileage was 63,000.

Corrosion of subframe, causing it to break and then catch fire to the car under the hood, destroying wiring and hoses.

Engine cradle rusted causing an safe situation should it fail while driving.

A rusted right front subframe separation on my 2002 hyundai sonata caused tire failure and a blowout.this happened one time and the car ran off the road.the car has been taken for repair where the mechanic is going to try and replace the frame in this area.

Vehicle failed state inspection due to the passenger side front subframe being severely rusted in on specific area. Frame failure at that point is likely to cause a wheel/suspension failure, most likely while being put under the strain of turning/braking. Dealer will not repair without charge. I have photos of the defect if needed.

Front subframe rusting out.

I own 2 ,2002 hyundai sonatas with 48,000 on one and 56,000 on the other. They are both developing severe rust under both vehicles. The worst one appears to be starting to crack by the pass. Side frame in front. Where the ac leaks onto. This area is part of the welded frame which will be expensive to fix and i do not think it should be this bad on a 6 year old car. I have already had to replace other parts that have rotted away so bad that there was not much left of them. The upper control arms are also starting to develop a flaking rust on them . I will have to replace them also soon. I even had these cars rustproofed when new.

My daughter was driving my 2002 sonata, when it basically just fell apart.it sounded like she was driving on the tire rim, but all 4 tires were still inflated.the front passenger-side tire did look tilted out.it had to be towed from that site.an insurance adjuster inspected it and stated he was sure that the car had gone off the road at some point because the axle was broken, that tire was bent and the engine cradle was scuffed "shiny".it had not gone off the road, so my mechanic took a closer look and found that the engine cradle was rusted right though and what had happened (to my 16 year-old daughter while driving on a busy road at night) was that the engine cradle was so rusted that it crumbled, causing the engine and transmission to fall and break the axle and bend the wheel!thankfully, she had only just driven onto the road from a driveway, so she wasn't going fast and the lane she entered was clear.i'd hate to think what would have happened had she made it to the highway before this happened!when we discovered on line that so many others hadsimilar problems with their 1999-2002 sonatas, we contacted our local dealer.he said we needed to have the car towed (15 miles) to his service dept where they would have a hyundai rep take a look at it.he said his manager had been known to replace the engine cradle free of charge, but he doubted very much that they'd pay for the axle, wheel, and any other damage incurred.after reading all these other similar incidents, i don't know if i want to bother going to the trouble of having my car towed to hyundai.i definitely feel that the public needs to be made aware of this problem and that a recall should be issued asap before someone is killed.(i bought this car used from the hyundai dealer in jan '05 with 50,000 miles on it. I have had it serviced regularly by a reputable mechanic these past 3+ years, and it now has a little over 100,000 miles on it).

Excessive sub frame rust caused it to brake, and as a result practically disabled driving and almost led to an accident on highway. Control of the vehicle is very dangerous, as the wheels are angled differently because of the sub frame bent.

2002 hyundai sonata right passenger side wheel went sideways while driving at full speed. Luckily no one was seriously injured but the car will need to be repaired. I believe hyundai should be responsible for repairs. From reading information online this seems to be a very common problem.

The contact discovered that the lower control arm on the passenger side had separated because the subframe was rusted. An independent mechanic diagnosed the vehicle and confirmed the cause of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired and the manufacturer was notified. The failure mileage was 206,341.

Took my 2002 hyundai sonata to our local repair shop for state inspection and he told my husband that my subframe was completely rusted out...he could stick his fingers all the way through the frame.he said it was very dangerous and to call our local hyundai dealer. I did and the service guy there said to bring it in for inspection. That they have identified the rusting out of sonata subframes as a problem and under "goodwill"....they will fix it for free, unless the car has been wrecked. Told him my car was not wrecked....in for state inspection only. I have just recently noticed when driving my sonata the steering wheel shaking very bad....especially when breaking on a hill.i thought maybe my brakes were going bad. No!!!it was my rusted out subframe. I believe there should be a class-action lawsuit filed. I have to take my sonata to the dealership in 5 days so they can order a new subframe. Thankfully, none of my family has been injured because of this. What i want to know is.....why hasn't their been a recall on this for sonatas????is hyundai going to wait for fatalities before they take action??? our mechanic told us the engine could fall off and/or our tires could break off while driving.and we don't do alot of city driving....mainly highway driving and my 17-year old son has been driving this sonata. I thank god nothing happened while he was driving the sonata.please respond to me asap. There needs to be a recall now!!i am contacting other sonata owners who've had the same problem and we are getting a class-action lawsuit together.

I purchased a pre-owned hyundai sonata in january 2008 from a dealer. This past tuesday, the frame of my car broke while i was on the road. Luckily for me, i was not on the highway. After some research i found out that 1999-2002 sonata had problem with the car frame. I contacted the company and was asked to take the car to a hyundai dealer who would fix the frame for me. Although the company is fixing the frame at no cost, i had to rent a car and i still have it. The total charges for it till now have been $700. I also paid twice for getting my car towed. I requested the company to reimburse me for the rental car charges which they deny doing. I would have driven my sonata for another 3-4 yrs. As i am a recent graduate and looking for a job, i cannot afford to buy a new car and pay huge rental fee. But at the same time, i am concerned about my safety even after the front frame is fixed. I would appreciate if you can guide me about how to approach this situation with hyundai. I am spending a lot of money on rental and at the same time i will have to buy a new car. I look forward to hearing from you.

The right side sub-frame of my 02 hyundai sonata we just found out has rusted through and the lower control arm has separated causing the axle to pop out, this happened as i was driving and almost caused a wreck...the car is very well maintained and even though it was once in a northern state (that's where i bought it..in s.dakota) i do not think this uneven rusting of the subframe is normal. I checked and found that there was actually a recall of this vehicle for the exact this same reason, i called hyundai and the representative lied to my ear that it was not covered by that recall and that i should take to the hyundai dealership and pay for the repair myself.this is unconscionable and shouldn't be so. I wish i can get some help.

Wheel collapsed into wheel well - repaired under campaign 089 sub frame corrosion by hyundai.still had to replace axle and axle boot - 500.00 dealer repair.

The contact owns a 2002 hyundai sonata. While making a right turn, the contact heard an abnormal noise underneath the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the subframe was corroded and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact called lancaster hyundai at (866) 528-2534 (located at 5260 main st, east petersburg, pa 17520) and was informed that the vin was not included in a recall.

After having repairs done under campaign 089 sub frame corrosion by hyundai and paying 500.00 for axle repair, 2wks later the opposite wheel collapsed out of the ball joint. 900.00 repair bill and dealer indicated this was not related to the sub-frame recall.this is now 2 incidents where the wheels fell off the car while the driver was driving the car. Both were thankfully at low speeds in a parking lot.

Noticed pulling to right as driving, along with rattling in front end.found that driver front subframe near lower suspension mountis completely rusted through.discovered that this is a noted issue with these model vehicles and that a recall has been issued by the manufacturer.due to obvious safety concerns i would like to know how to proceed with this concern.

The contact owns a 2002 hyundai sonata.after driving 55 mph, the driver arrived at her destination and discovered that the wheel was at a 45 degree angle.the driver had to use excessive force to turn the steering wheel to the right.she noticed that the frame on the front end, which houses the supports for the wheels, was rusted out completely.the contact took the vehicle to a tire dealer for an alignment inspection.the results indicated that there were holes in the frame holding the steering, which had to be replaced at the cost of $1,600.the vehicle was repaired and is currently able to be driven.the vin was unknown.the current and failure mileages were 125,000.

My car had been experiencing pulling to the right and i was replacing the right front tire every week.it felt as if the tire was going to fall off.i took it to my dad whom in turn got a mechanic to look at it.the mechanic said that the k frame was broken.he tried welding it.the weld held for about two weeks.after researching the problem i found that there is a recall and settlement from hyundai.i called the customer service department who in turn gave me a case number and had be take the car to the dealership.they inspected the car and determined that my car didn't fit the criteria.i'm confused by the fact that so many vehicles like mine have the same problem but they don't fit the "criteria".something is wrong.and it's more than corrosion or the lack of.

After having increased difficulty controlling the car, i took it to my tire dealer for an alignment and was told that they could not help me because the frame was "broken" and was shredding my rear tires. I called hyundai corporate and was told that there was a recall on the subframe and was advised to take the car to my local dealer for inspection. Upon inspection, i was told that it was covered on the recall and left it with them for two days for repair. When i picked the car up, i was told that the front was repaired at no cost to me, however, the rear (which is what i went in for) was in very bad shape but it was not covered and would cost me $1,500 to repair it. I cannot understand how the front of a frame can be part of a recall, but the rear is not. ?????and i cannot understand why the local dealer didn't call to tell me this before he did the work on the front. Had i known how much it was going to cost me, i would have told him not to bother. Should i choose to keep the car,in addition to $1,500 to repair the rear frame, i will also need to buy two tires to replace the two which this rear frame is shredding. Unbelievable.

My wife owns a 2002 hyundai sonata, and last week she noticed that the car was pulling hard to the right. She drives 60 miles round trip to her job 5 days a week.

Vehicle has problems with front vibration. *mrthe vehicle veered left and the consumer lost control of steering. The cause was found to be broken u-bolt. The vehicle began to vibrate from front end while the consumer was driving and the cause was determined to be front left axle failure, which was replaced. I backed out of the driveway and the subframe on the passenger side collapsed and the tie rod and cv joint came loose. The steering went out. A certified frame mechanic said the sub frame rusted out.

The contact owns a 2002 hyundai sonata. While driving 65 mph, the rear passenger side tire buckled and ended up under the vehicle. The upper control arm rusted in half, which caused the vehicle to spin out of control. There was no crash. The vehicle was towed, but was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 260,000.

Rear upper control arms (passenger and driver) had broken during normal driving conditions. The break is where the extensions connect to the bushings. Corrosion seems to be the culprit because the metal had rotted very thin and became perforated.

2002 hyundai sonata. Having problem putting fuel in the vehicle*cwthe consumer stated it seemed as though the pressure valve was not opening correctly when fuel was added.

The contact owns a 2002 hyundai sonata. The contact stated that premature rust and corrosion occurred on the front subframe. The rust went through the front subframe, causing it to fracture. The vehicle was serviced by checkered flag hyundai (3033 virginia beach blvd, virginia beach, va 23452, (757) 687-3462) for nhtsa campaign number: 09v124000 (suspension). The dealer had to disassemble the vehicle. Other parts were damaged. The dealer refused to replace the damaged parts and stated that they would only service the recall, which was completed. Also, the vehicle was included in nhtsa campaign number: 09v317000 (latches/locks/linkages). The contact was not notified by the manufacturer of the two recalls. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The parts were damaged from the completion of the recall repair. The manufacturer refused to provide coverage for the replacement of the damaged parts, stating that the dealer provided the remedy for the recall repair. The dealer and the manufacturer expected the contact to replace the parts that were damaged. The approximate failure mileage was 94,724.

Monday, 11-07-11, right front tire blew out while driving 45 mph.the inside inch of tread and sidewall of the tire had extreme wear down to the metal wires. This condition was not observable from the front or side of the car.the remaining tread showed normal wear.the left tire shows some of the same abnormal wear pattern as the right, leaving me to believe there was an alignment problem.tuesday, 11-09-11, replaced front right tire. Wednesday, 11-10-11, scheduled an alignment with firestone complete auto care. However, after examining the vehicle, i was told by their mechanic that the front right frame was cracked and separating, and the car was not safe to drive.contacted myrtle beach hyundai (mbh)to explain problem, and to schedule a service appointment.thursday, 11-11-11, mbh confirmed that the frame is cracked and separating.told us that it would be replaced at no cost to us because of a recall, and that currently the car is not drivable.however, we were told that a new replacement frame part would not be available until the end of next week.also, we would have to pay for any associated parts to replace the broken frame, such as bolts, bushings, and etc. If they needed to be replaced.furthermore, we were told that mbh would not provide us with a loaner vehicle during this recall repairs, and we would have to rent a vehicle for at least a week. We are on extended vacation at myrtle beach, sc and only have this car as our onlymeans oftransportation.rented a car from enterprise rent-a-car for the week at $156.99 plus taxes, etc.if car rental is necessary longer than the week, the cost is $29.99 plus taxes, etc. Per day.in conclusion, the recall remedy of this potentially serious situation, as may be stated to be free or no charge to the vehicle owner, it is not inclusive of all the related expenses associated with the repairs.

All four original equipment struts factory installed on a 2002 hyundai sonata 4 cylinder, have failed. Vehicle has 51,000 miles and the struts have not been doing their job for 15000 miles. When looked into, at the dealership (vehicle has extended warranty) the dealerships position is they will not replace the struts unless they are leaking. And if 1 was leaking they would only replace that one strut.... Have the same issue with a 2004 hyundai santa fe 2.7 awd vehicle also. That vehicle has 79,000 miles and have the same drivibilty condition. And was told the same exact thing about the dealership/ manufacturer's position.

Wheel collapsed into wheel well - repaired under campaign 089 sub frame corrosion by hyundai.still had to replace axle and axle boot - 500.00 dealer repair.

My wife owns a 2002 hyundai sonata, and last week she noticed that the car was pulling hard to the right. She drives 60 miles round trip to her job 5 days a week. Once she told me about it, i took it in for service thinking it was in need of a wheel alignment. My technicians called me back to the service area andshowed me where the sub frame had rusted completely through on the right front side. Also the right front wheel as tilted to the side slightly. I told them to begin repairs immediately, as my wife's safety is my top priority. I called hyundai on 2/3/09 and informed them of the problem. I was given a case number, and told thatthey would contact me in 3 to 4 business days. I expect full reimbursement, as i now understand that this a common problem on this particular vehicle.

While driving to maryland to visit my daughter, the right front end of my car began to vibrate so hard that i thought i had a flat tire.i was going about 65 mph and as soon as i could i pulled over to look at the car.there was no flat however, the vibration continued.it was vibrating so hard my glove compartment came open.i took the car to a dealership in maryland only to be told that my tires had dead spots in them and i should return them to the store.i have been driving on these tires for six months without a problem.when i returned home i went to the store where i purchased the tires.they examined them and said there was nothing wrong with the tires.i had the car completely checked out by the dealer before i took this trip.they told me there was nothing wrong with the car.the vibration continues but it is especially bad when driving a higher rates of speed.i am worried now about taking the car on trips. Believe me, you do not want to have a sudden breakdown or control loss on the dc beltway. Although the car is 4 years old i only have 29500 miles on it.i should not be having major problems with so few miles on the car.

Vibration in front right wheel at high speeds.i took my 2002 sonata to the repair shop and they told me my cradle that involves the half shaft/control arm in the suspension was rusted through with fist size holes.i took it to the auto dealer and they charged me over $500.00 to replace the half shaft and cradle, also they stated that it would have been covered had my wheel fallen off.that was the most ridiculous thing i've ever heard. After they replaced the half shaft, within 2 days i had a grinding/rattle on the same right side.i took it back to the auto dealer and they told me now it was the bushings in the suspension and they would have to be replaced but it was safe to drive..this problem was not there until they worked on the car originally. It will now cost me over $300.00 tohave the bushings replaced.i believe they should have done this with the original work.there is a federal probe going on with the nhtsa, it is stated that this is a very serious and dangerous situation.the manufacturer of this car should be standing behind they're product, but instead they are refusing to cover this problem and make the appropriate changesthat could in turn save somebody's life if their car would fail due to this flaw.

The contact owns a 2002 hyundai sonata. While making a right turn at 5 mph he noticed a loud popping sound from under the vehicle.after examining the vehicle henoticed that the outer arm assembly had separated from the passenger side tire. 5 days prior, recallcampaign id number# 09v124000 wasperformed on his vehicle. After the repairthe steering wheel had became more difficult to steer. The contact owns a 2002 hyundai sonata. While the vehicle was being serviced at an independent mechanic's workshop, it was observed that the front lower control arms were perforated. The vehicle was not repaired. The vin was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 09v125000 (suspension). The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 82,000.

The contact owns a 2002 hyundai sonata. While driving approximately 35 mph, the contact heard a loud banging noise near the front end of the vehicle. The contact discovered that the lower control arm on the passenger side had separated because the subframe was rusted. An independent mechanic diagnosed the vehicle and confirmed the cause of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired and the manufacturer was notified. The failure mileage was 206,341.

I have had numerous complaints that i have filed with this vehicle. The latest complaint i have is with the drivers side upper control arm. My son could have been killed when this broke. I have talked to several garages including the dealership and no one has ever replaced an upper control arm except on a vehicle that is very old and then very seldom. My son was turning a corner when the drivers side wheel fell sideways. Upon looking at the problem we discovered that the upper control arm broke. This should have definitely should have not happened on a 2002 vehicle.

Consumer states while driving the vehicle would vibrate at any speed, causing by the upper ball joint and the lower ball joint. Dealer has inspected the vehicle several time, and could not duplicate or correct the problem. Please provide further information.ts

Dt: contact stated the front right wheel bearing was replaced. Currently, the right left wheel bearing is being replaced.

In 2004, at approx 45k miles, vehicle developed creaking noise in driver side rear suspension.dealer repaired for "loose tranverse cross member".problem re-developed after 3 months.separate dealer repaired for "worn bushings".problem re-developed after one week and has worsened to a clunking noise at low speed. Hesitant to return to dealer until properly diagnosed due to consistent repair delays resulting in excessive loss of vehicle use. (current total 7 days for this problem).

Right rear wheel was making a rubbing noise.took vehicle in for service and the dealer discovered the bearing needed replaced.

While traveling about 65mph on the highwayand without prior warning driver side tire thread separated from the wheel.

I replaced my tires with the correct type called for my car, 205/65r15 h94 bf goodrich traction t/a and now i keep getting flat tires from the factory installed hud caps shifting on my weehls and pressing on the valve stem. So far the car was not moving when this happened, but i am affraid of what will happen when i am at highway speed and it happenes. The dealer says that it is a problem with the tires, but how so if they are the correct tires for my car. The dealer will jnot do anything about this problem at all!

Valve stems have been pulled from tire by shifting hub caps.this has happened after tires were recently replaced.once while the car was stopped and once while backing out of a driveway.

Recall #089 from 2009 / fairfield superior hyundai reported that the owner had this "sub-frame" corrosion taken care of and it was not - owner did not receive a recall notice in the mail at current address since 2004- owner (me) was informed by another certified mechanic before major brake work was performed -

Made right hand turn passenger wheel cocked dead stop. When checked out was told sub frame rust apart on passenger side.

You did a recall a number of years ago on the chrome on the interior door handles peeling off and being hazardous. Now the same thing is happening to the chrome on the gear shift handle. It is very sharp and has made minor cuts to the right hand while shifting the vehicle. The vehicle was stationary. It is an ongoing problem as the chrome keeps peeling off a little at a time.

I had reported my vehicle stolen since jan of 2017 but the el paso, tx said i couldn't actually report it stolen since i knew who took it however after that month passed i couldn't locate my vehicle and i've called every where in nm where it was taken and not one agency had information if my vehicles where abouts now i had purchased the vehicle sometime last year for my son and getting things fixed before being financially able to get registered under his or my namei currently still obtain the original title and registration docs and can also provide a notorized letter from my ex's aunt who sold it to us i also had downloaded several apps in regards to being able to locate my vehicle and months later i typed in the vin and my vehicle pops up registered to a jorge scott in el paso and i'm at a loss of words wondering how he gained access to my vehicle and what steps can i take in regards to recovery it i can be contacted [xxx]/ [xxx]information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).'

My door handle has became sharp and cut my friends finger. Called dealership they said my vin number wasnt on the list for the recall about door handles.

The paint is peeling off of all 4 door handle assemblies of my 39 month old hyundai sonata.hyundai refuses to cover the obvious failure.

The door handles are peeling (silver coating) and it has causedsevere cuts to anyone getting out of the car, both on the passenger and driversfront side.

My 2002 hyundaisonata the finishis peeling off the door handles and people have been cut as it peels it is very sharp.

1) engine light seems to come on at least once a month2)fan knob for heating/air conditioner does not work on 1 or 2, it will only work on 3 or 4.this is a new problem.

*nlm

The contact owns a 2002 hyundai sonata. The contact stated that while braking, the vehicle suddenly accelerated without warning. The contact was unable to maneuver the vehicle when it then crashed and traveled up the side support wires for a telephone pole. The contact was not injured. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and hired a third-party agency to further inspect the vehicle to determine the cause of the failure. The manufacturer would not provide a cause for the failure to the contact. The vehicle was not repaired.the failure and current mileage was 200,000.

Dt: caller got into car, pulled it out of garage and got out of it. When she got back into vehicleand put it in gear it made a screaming noise and accelerated. She hit the brakes, but they did not work. She tried to stop the car by going up a hill insteadvehicle hit a house three doors away. Upon impact, air bags did not deploy.insurance claimed that dealer saidthere nothing was wrong with car. Manufacturer has not been contacted yet.

Throttle body got stuck wide open there us a pic of this in gettysburg times i got video of the car going wild my car drove into a support line and there was nothing i could do. On 09/04/07 i bought a used 2002 hyundai sonata and on 09/05/07 the car lost 1st and 4th gearit seemed as if the transmission were going out , but when i started reviewing other consumer related issues i noticed over 900 consumers had the same problems with their hyundai's , but the cause ended up being the output speed sensor. Which in some cases took consumers up to 6 months to locate one. Unfortunately i financed the car as is with no warranty.

The contact owns a 2002 hyundai sonata. When fueling the vehicle, gasolineregurgitates from the fuel tank.also the check engine warning light was illuminated on the instrument control panel. Sometimes the vehicle will hesitate when attempting to accelerate, as if there was no fuel available. The dealer was notified, and a technician concluded that she would have to pay $900.00 to repair the vehicle. No repairs were made.. The failure mileage was unknown and the current mileage was 82878.

While applying the accelerator pedal it went to the floor.this caused the vehicle to accelerate uncontrollably.the driver was able to maintain control of the vehicle, and pulled over. Vehicle was towed to a dealer for inspection, andmechanic determined that the accelerator cableneeded to be replaced.

We recentlty purchased a used but showroom condition hyundai sonata with somewhere around 29,000 miles on it from a dealership.after about three weeks my son had to leave it in a parking lot.the throttle/cruise control cable (even tho he did not have the cruise control on) was stuck. He thought the problem was fixed so hedrove the car a few more weeks and was on his way home when the same thing happened again only this time he ran into a utility pole.the car was damaged pretty baddly but thank the lord he was not.he could have been killed.the utility company is charging us about $4000.00 or more dollars for the work they had to do to the pole.i called hyundai consumer affairs.the car is at a hyundai dealership.consumer affairs is mailing me a form to fill out.i do not know if hyundai is going to claim responsiblity or not.i feel that this problem needs to be researched to see if there have been any other problems with the throttle/cruise control sticking making it impossible to stop or causing any other problem.i hate to see someone die from this.

The contact owns a 2002 hyundai sonata. While driving, the sun visor inadvertently fell and blocked the contact's view. The contact stated that the sun visor failed to stay up. The vehicle was taken to blaise alexander hyundai (1703 w college ave, state college, pa 16801, (814) 234-2886) could not determine the cause of the failure and advised that the sun visor needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and did not assist. The approximate failure mileage was 79,000.

2002 hyundai sonata windshield wiper blades have had to be replace frequently since purchase. Windshield wipers go off the side of the windshield making it hard for driver to see.***no answer required***the wiper failed while the consumer was driving in a bad snowstorm.the left wiper overshot the windshield and hung over the left side of the vehicle.the right wiper continued to work properly.the consumer pulled to the side of the road and manually brought the wiper back onto the windshield.once she resumed driving the wiper would not function properly.the vehicle was towed to a local dealer who explained that the wiper system was designed that way to prevent motor burn out.

Whenever windshield wipers are in use they fail to work properly. Had taken vehicle to dealer at least 4 times. Mechanic finally replaced wiper motor from new vehicle. This resolved problem.

I backed out of the driveway and the subframe on the passenger side collapsed and the tie rod and cv joint came loose. The steering went out. A certified frame mechanic said the sub frame rusted out.

Factory installed hub caps turn on wheels with acceleration and braking, causing pressure on tire valve stems.this leads to piercing of tire valve stem and rapid deflation of tire.hub caps have jagged edges on hub cap where contact is made with tire valve stem.there is no mechanism to prevent the hub caps from moving.

2002 hyundai sonata experienced a flat tire due to a leaky valve.two days after the tires were replaced the driver's side front tire went flat due to a leaky stem valve.the vehicle was taken back to the tire dealer and the tire was remounted with a new stem valve.three days later the same tire was flat again and a few days later the front passenger's side tire was flat also.after inspecting the wheels the consumer observed that the tire bulge was causing the wheel cover to spin.the cover would spin until the stem valve was pressed against the edge of the access holein the wheel cover.eventually the wheel cover would cut into the stem valve and cause a flat tire.it was later determined that the hub caps had been installed incorrectly.after removing all four hub caps the vehicle had no more flat tires.
