New hyundai sonata purchased in 2000.motor vehicle recall notice received regarding air bag wiring harness.car was taken in for recall.the recall was "fixed" according to the dealer.the air bag wiring harness connector has not been fixed correctly.the air bag light still goes off, because the connector must be loose and disconnects.dealer states that ownermust be disconnecting the wiring by placing objects under the seat.the owner does not put objects under the seat.the recall issue has not been fixed so that the wiring harness is securely fastened.

Vehicle stalled without prior warning, and then engine check light/ air bag lightcame on dashboard. Dealershipwas aware ofproblem.

I was heading eastbound going about 40 mph. An suv was heading westbound and about to make a left turn. The suv struck my vehicle and totaled the entire front of the vehicle. My airbags did not deploy. I am supposed to have side and front airbags. I am lucky i was wearing a seat belt because other than that, i had no other protection. This could have been fatal.

I had my bearings replaced, my rear hub bearings. Now it is making to same noise and they now say it is not the bearings-they do not know what it is! my car idle sounds like is going to stall all the time when i am stopped. The car pulls around 5,20 and 50 mph like it just cannot get gas or the transmission is bad. I brought it in 2xs. They say they do not know what it is and cannot get anything on the diag machines. Now i am passed 60,000 miles. After having my car for 2 days (giving me no lender or rental) they found a problem at the last minute. Oil leaked from the valves into the spark plug wires into the coil pack and that is the car pulling problem. They say i have to pay $600 to fix it. This was on june 6,2003. I brought the car in for the idle which was not fixed and brought it in for this engine hesitation 2xs. Both times they did not and couldnot fix these problems. I have the receipts that they could not fix nor repeat these problems, but they are noted. I should not have to pay for these repairs!!!! this is not daily upkeep!! this must be defect!! i have a real problem with this car! i need to be contacted on this matter for hyundai to pay for these repairs! i am having a difficult time on this matter. These parts need to be replaced now and i cannot and shouldn't have to pay for these parts or labor! i alsohave had my front driver window regulator fixed 4 times, my front passenger side regulator fixed once, my rear regulator fixed once. I had to buy a new battery for my car and a new headlight in the first year(hyundai said i had to submit paperwork to see if they would vote to repay me for my cost of the battery). I had my air bag light going off(which now i never trust for it to go off when needed or even go off when not ). My paint is chipping everywhere! my front passenger window leaks all over my carpet inside floor. And many more problems! thank you, darlene [email protected]

Consumer states air bag warning light is on for the fifth time.dealer replaced entire wiring harness. However, this did not fix the problem and the air bag light is on again.

I understand there is an airbag recall on some model cars, i drive a 2000 hyundai sonata gls that has an airbag light activated on the dashboard. I don't know if the airbag is defective, i should not drive it, or what to do, please advise.this airbag lite on the dashboard goes on as soon as i start the engine, and stays on all the time the engine is running, this airbag light does not go off until i turn the engine off.

Air bag light came on and stayed on. Dealer (taylor hyundai) denied that there was an air bag recall on this model.

Air bag senor light comes on and stays on all day.contacted dealer.found nothing wrong.i

The airbag light comes on.the district manger, jeff westland out of n.j., (609) 395-7308 stated that hyundai is aware of a defect in the right passenger seat (late 1999's & early 2000's that rolled off the assembly) which makes the light come on if a person moves around in the seat, excessive weight of a passenger, or putting any object under the seat.what i find outrageous about this, is the last two times i've taken my vehicle in,i've been told that the airbag light was not on.when i spoke with mr. Westland, he wanted me to leave the car for several days at the dealship, first team, so they could go over it bumper to bumper.on january 8, 2001 i took the car into the dealer so they could look at thetransmission and the airbag light which was on again.on that evening, at approximately 5:00, i received a call from the dealship, asking if i could come into the dealership the next morning to drive with one of their mechanics because they could not duplicate the problem with the transmission.i was unable to do so because of work.i was also told that the airbag light had not been on .i picked up the car that evening since, "nothing was wrong with it" and would be unable to test drive it with a mechanic..i do not understand why the dealership is saying that the airbag light has not been on the last several times when it has been. The transmission sporatically downshifts when i am driving on the freeway on a straight and level surface at a constant speed.it also hesitates sometimes when starting off from a dead stop. If you would like any of the invoices stating the repairs that have been done to these two problems, please contact me.thank you for your help.

My son was in an accident where he "t-boned a truck and the air bag did not deploy.

I purchased a new 2000 hyundai sonata gls from schaumburg hyundai (il) in november 2000, and had existing damage or traffic crashes with the vehicle until on 10/07/2002, when i was forced off the roadway by a truck and struck the side of a rocky mountain head-on. The force was enough to bend the middle of the car's frame and total the car. I was thrust violently forward at impact, and suffered minor neck and back injuries, and had been properly using the seatbelt. However, none of the car's front or side air bags deflated at time of impact. This concerns me greatly since i am a police officer and aware of product defects, and recalls which effect public safety. I brought this to the attention of the schaumburg hyundai dealer and also hyundai motor finance, neither of which responded favorably to this concern. I guess it must actually take a death to get their proper attention! i checked the nhtsa website and regretablly located similar complaints by other consumers.

I bought a hyundai sonata in december.i just got my car out of the service department for the third time. Air bag light keeps activating on our car and the dealer and manufacturer will do nothing about it.we checked into the lemon law and understood that we fall into that category.the dealership agrees, but now will not refund our money.i do not feel safe with my children in that car.there are duel front air bags, along with side impact air bags.one of the first times we had it serviced, the service department said the light kept coming on because there was a problem with the air bag.i want to know what i can do about it, since the dealer will not cooperate.thank you for your time on this matter.

While driving 35 mph braking system malfunctioned, causing no braking ability, and resulting in a crash. Also, airbag deployed, causing the driver to hit the head restraint which flew into the rear seat.please provide further information.

Dt*: the contact stated the airbag warning illuminated constantly.the vehicle was taken to the service dealer for recall #01v347000 but the airbag warning light continued to illuminate.

On may 21, 2005 after a trip to austin, txto funeral with daughter-in-law from ky. Next morning, i started engine in sons yard for trip home to il. Air bag light came on. I drove home to il (350 miles) and told husband of problem. Hetook car to dealership on 6/17/05. They said it was the front passenger sensor and gave estimate $829.79 and said car out of warranty.hyundai said "goodwill" repair possible.talked to dealership 3 times..still waiting for decision as of 7-29-05. I am on disability and do not drive much. Now,i am afraid of air bags deploying accidentally or not at all. This is a safety issue and i am disappointed in lack of concern . Do i have to be in accident before acknowledge of this potential problem with many of the sonatas on the road?40,019 mileage at time of problem.

After starting the vehicle the air bag warning light would remain illuminated until the vehicle was shut off. The dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem. The air bag harness was replaced once in july 2002 under warranty. Now the sensor has to be replaced.

Dt: the contact statedthat once a year the air bag warning light cameon. He took the vehicle to dealership, and they adjusted the harness and the light went off. Car stalls out in low speed driving, idling, and or when back up. I have been able to avoid an accident with passengers in the vehicle or not in the vehicle while i was driving. I have had oil changed, fluids checked, alternator changed, spark plugs and wires also checked. The car has also had fuel system flushed and problem with stalling persist.

Vehicle has beento dealer 5 times for stalling, recall on stalling performednovember 2000.dealer cannot remedy problem. The vehicle stalls intermnittently at stop sign, red lights, low speed driving, while backing out and on highways, dealer has attempted to fix this problem several times however has not been successful, even with recall 00v259001 repair the vehicle is not fixed, dealer has also replaced the air flow sensor connection, purge valve (on 6 occasions), tps sensor and extension, and other sensor assemblies.lumbar support would not hold, dealer replaced.trunk would not stay open on incline.

My hyundai dealer has refused to honor their 100,000miles, 10 years warranty" many times that i bring the car to be fixed under the warranty since the car was only 8years old and 76,000 miles since 2008. They refuse to fix the problems that i experienced by saying my car is not listed in any recall campaign.unfortunately this year, on 10/11/12, i took my car for an annual state inspection for 2000 hyundai sonata and it fails the safety inspection. Here is what it says: ***vehicle memo***vehicle is unsafe to drive...rear sub-frame has hole rotted through...due to the current financial situation, i don't know how i will get this car fixed because the car is now 115,000miles and 12 years old and i don't know if they will fix it. They have continuously refused to fix my car under warranty even when it was clearly within the warranty period and i was lucky then that i have been able to pay the fixes out of pocket but i don't have the luxury of paying out of pocket this time. I am in need of miracles now.

Two big problems, first the currentthe entire frame on the ride side has completely rusted out and the bottom fell out of the car - before this happened the car was pulling to the rightthe car was unable to be driven and a frame is hard to locate because i was told this is a common problem with these cars - a 2000 hyundai shouldn't completely rust from the inside - there is no rust on the car and it was kept in a garage i am in communication with the company to see what will be done, judging from pas experiences - nothingsecond issue:we had many problems involving the electric systemthe car would go dead for no apparent reasonthe car alarm would get stuck and you couldn't get in the car or start it the dashboard lights go in and out (mostly out now).

I am totally disgusted with my car. I have a 2000 hyundai sonata. I bought it in 2002. In 2002 i had to have 2 of myoxygen sensors replaced due to a recall. Then the following year my check engine light came on and i had to have another oxygen sensor replaced. Two weeks after that my check engine light came on again and i had to have my fourth oxygen sensor replaced. Now this year august 2005 my check engine light is on again and now this time my rpm's are sticking and idling high, my transmission is not going into gear right, and my car is stalling. Since i have had this car i have also had to have my pulley replaced, my airbag harness fixed, two of my windows have broke, and my stereo broke when i first bought my car. Now i can't drive my car at all and i don't have the money to get it fixed. I have seen a lot of complaints about the 2000 hyundai sonata and i think the manufacturer better do something for all of us quick or they are going to have a lot of lawsuits on their hands.

Engine stalled as i was turning in an intersection, i avoided a crash. Reported to dealer as it happened 3 more times. They replaced my battery and gave me a carfax report and denied any recalls, even though i showed them a printout of one on this website. Check engine light on several times ,taken to auto store and put on diagnostic machine, maf sensor defective as stated on printout x2 separate occasions .still stalls at lights, and also stalls when either changing to reverse or vise versa. My kids are scared to ride with me. This stalling is happening on approx an every other day basis.dealer has been made aware and denies anything is wrong according to "their" diagnostic computer, yet will not allow me visual confirmation of such. I think i am unfortunately the victim of a lemon, and if i could afford to i would just drop it off at their doorstep and let the finance company know. By the way, finance co is aware of these problems and are not pleased at all of how the dealer is handling this because they got ripped off too. No parts have been replaced except for the battery which was unnecessary and they know it. Below i will give latest date of incident of stalling in intersection.

I have made five trips to the dealer with the same problem with my 2000 hyundai sonata which was purchased from allen turner hyundai in pensacola, fl and is serviced by them due to it is still in warranty.my car makes a loud clonking sound and then stops and all power goes off. This happens normally when i go over 30-40 mph and has happened while driving 70 on the interstate and almost caused me to wreck on a bridge because i had no shoulder to go off on and cars almost slammed into the back of me.after it shuts down, it takes anywhere from 10 minutes to one hour to start again. It turns over but will not start after this happens.as said i have taken this 5 times to the dealer, this last time they kept it 5 days and found nothing. I had them drive it home.prior they told me it was a computer error and was fixed, at first they said it was the computer board but then said the boss said it was just "bad battery cables." and cleaned off the cables. I had a new battery put in.they told me it was the air filter had jumped off the track and just needed put back on.the last 2 times they said the computer read nothing. I asked them about the gas line or water in the gas and they said they check all this, checked crank sensor, changed mass air flow sensor, "bad connection", tightened cable ends per tech line.the last time the invoice just tells me the computer reads ok. I had them drive it for 5 days for 218 miles but it did not reproduce per tech.i am going to get killed in this car and they honestly just don't take it seriously. I am a female and drive by myself alot and it scares me to lose control of my vehicle and for this to happen at night.i just can't seem to get the dealership to take it seriously.help me.

I have a 2000 hyundai sonata.i have had several sensors replaced in this car already. It is something electrical or another sensor, go figure.my wipers stopped working, and my wiper fluid pump also went out.had local auto shop replace wiper fluid pump, they tried whatever they could, then the wipers would not stop working,so they took out the relay switch.then my wipers start working and i can turn them off/on with out the relay switch in. My car power locks are not working either, which they did before. Then my car would not start for next three/four days, had to have it jumped each day. So i thought it was my battery or alternator, had those tested, it is not either of them. Then my car the next couple of day starts a little better, but still barely starting, and sometimes when i start my car, the power locks lock automatically. My radio has always acted up by turning off and on when it wants and not saving the stations i save everyday, but now it goes from a station to my cd turning on, just by itself. I have seen other complaints about this on the internet, there is seriously something wrong with the electrical wiring or the sensors of this car, there needs to be a recall this could be real dangerous.you never know what is going to happen. Please help!

Vehicle will stall without prior warning.also, electrical system was failing. Consumer had one headlight. Dealership was aware ofproblem.vehicle stalls while driving.leaving the driver in very dangerous situations. *jg

The vehicle caught fire while consumer was driving, the flames originated from the dashboard area, possible electrical problems. Ts

Transmission input speed sensor failure, this problem is shockingly all over the internet, the sensor fails and if your on the highway, you suddenly slam down in speed to almost half your previous speed with a loud bang as the transaxle jumps from 4th gear to 2nd gear and the engine redlines.due to the failed sensor telling the transaxle to downshift improperly.a inexperienced or less capable driver may have been thrown out of control from the sheer force of the impact when the transaxle mis-shifts from 4th to 2nd when the sensor malfunctions.

I pulled out into the road from a stop sign and my car loss power as there was oncoming traffic almost coming to a complete stop. I had to come completely off the gas pedal and stop, as i resumed the car began jerking and slowing resuming speed. I was almost rear ended with my kids sitting in the back seat. The also did the same thing again as i begin to drive up a incline/hill, it loss power. I experience this problem at least 3-4 times a week. I have researched that there was an electrical problem in 2000 hyundai sonata, v-6 cars and contacted the dealership and that stated that my car was not included in the recall. I was also told that i hadseveral repairs done from previous recalls. I informed the customer service personnel that i had not received any notifications in the mail regarding recalls. I am very concerned for the safety of my family while driving the vehicle as well as my own. Could someone please help me in resolving this issue? i did let capital hyundai look at my vehicle a while backand was told that my car need to have some sensors replaced at my own expense. If there was a recall on the 2000 model, should they not cover this matter? if the company is showing that there are possible repairs that have already been done based on recalls regarding sensors and electrical issues, are they responsible for making sure the problem is remedied if it didn't correct the problem?

Gas light don't work, the odometer don't work, when it rains the car lights dime and the car almost dies...

When consumer shut vehicle off, there emitted a long grunting noise.approximately 20 minutes later the interior of the vehicle had burst into flames.the cause is unknown.*jg

.on 9/16/05 after coming home from work in the evening, my hyundai 2000 sonata had a electrical fire. Luckily i was getting out of the car when everything under the hood exploded into flames.i was able to move the car away from the house.the fire department came quickly and put the fire out.the car was totaled.before this i didn't have any electrical or engine problems.

Consumer states engine slow to start, turns over very slowly.dealer replaced battery.

The contact owns a 2000 hyundai sonata.the contact has been experiencing failure with the sensor plug on her vehicle.she has had to pay $200 each time the vehicle has been repaired.she stated that she is also experiencing failure with the powertrain automatic transmission, which caused her vehicle to stall.she has had to replace her engine and the battery approximately two to three times.the powertrain was unknown.the current mileage is 118,000 and failure mileage was 67,000.the consumer stated replaced the engine 1 time and the battery twice. The dealer stated radio jumping channels. Updated 09/05/07

Car had a recall for the oxygen sensors and was taken care of. However, it has been in the shop 3 other times to have the oxygen sensors replaced and i just had another go out past the warranty period. I have also had the car 'slam' into a lower gear while on the expressway and the check engine light came on. When i take it they say it is a transmission sensor and replace it. This has doneit five times!! it is very scary when it does this. The car is on it's fourth battery and it has 80,000 on the odometer. I have had numerous other problems too. Now it just will not start, it is going to an independent shop this time. This car has been one big headache!!!

There was an erratic operation when the acceleratorpedal is applied.the dealer could not duplicate the problem.the horn malfunctioned, the door(s) closed by themselves, and when the vehicle was driven pass the 40 mph mark, the transmission operated as if were catching up. Scc

Consumer complained about an intermittent startingproblem dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem.

While driving at about 35 mph the engine stalled then restarted while in motion. Then the vehicle started hesitating form a stand still and felt like it did not want to accelerate. I contacted the dealer and the following day they found a faulty cam sensor which they replaced. Two days later the vehicle started hesitating from a standstill and then started stalling when at a stop i.e.red lights. I contacted the dealer on 6/28 and they checked the car the next day. They agreed with the hesitation problem and said the history code for the cam sensor failure had not been cleared. Seemed a little fishy to me. I asked if this would remedy the problem. The response was if it didn't give them another call. I said what if i am on the highway and it fails. The dealer said " call the road service number and have the car towed to them" that seemed to me to be a very short sighted view of a very dangerous condition. I cannot call if i am killed because the car stalls on the highway or it is in the middle of the night and i don't have a cell phone?. They designed, manufactured and warranted t the car. Seems to me it should be emcumbent on them to backup their warranty and not leave it to the risk of the consumer's life and limb until the car finally fails at a very inopportune moment. As an observation, this problem fits the description of nhtsa campaign id # 00v259000 which i complied with.

The contact owns a 2000 hyundai sonata.while driving 25 mph, the front passenger side tire assembly was falling off the vehicle due to a rusted engine cradle on the front passenger side.the vehicle was taken to a service station and they replaced the passenger side driveshaft assembly.after the repair was made, the contact still heard noises.the vehicle was returned to the shop and, upon further inspection, the engine cradle wheel hub assembly was found to be out of place due to rust.the entire wheel rotated while the driver side remained stationary.the failure caused the engine cradle to rust.there is a current investigation (pe08029) for this failure.the current and failure mileages were 129,358.

While driving engine warning light illuminated, then, vehicle stalled. Consumer was able to restart the vehicle.dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem.

The crankshaft position sensor is faulty. I don't understand how hyundai can have a recall for this item in their kia optimas and santa fe 2.5l v-6 engines, but not in the 2.5l v-6 sonatas. The least of the problems is difficulty starting, which seems to be the culmination of the problem. The beginning of the problem is the loss of power and stalling, incredibly dangerous while on the highway traveling at 60 mph and without warning the car loses power. Last year i spent over $500 for a tune up and spark plug wires. The check engine just came on today after having trouble getting started and had it diagnosed as a p0335 crankshaft position sensor a circuit malfunction. I called several dealerships and the repair is in excess of $400 for labor plus parts.

I was traveling down the highway when without warning my engine simply shut off, and the power assist to the brakes and steering was stopped.i tried moving from the center lane over to the shoulder and was almost rear-ended by a vehicle in the right lane.i was able to pull the car off on the right shoulder and stop.the vehicle would not restart and i had to have it towed to the nearest dealer in the area, pugi hyundai in downers grove, il.they took the vehicle in for service and later in the morning informed me that the crankshaft position sensor had failed.the cost of repair will be a minimum of $600, and possibly more, depending if they determine the engine needs additional repair parts.

Air bags light keeps coming back on after i have taken it to the dealership.check engine light comes on and off at randum.air/heating unit stop working, put the car on the machine and no light/signs showing anything was wrong with the car. Had the force feed blower motor changed and still not work.

Frame of 2000 hyundai sonata was found during oil change to be severely rusted to the point where vehicle was unsafe to drive.went to dealership where we were told to contact hyundai corp.after 2 week period we were told hyundai would do nothing to correct problem.went back to dealership and after 3 days were again told nothing would be done to fix problem.the car only had 88,000 miles on it when problem was discovered and still had original muffler.does frame usually rust out before muffler?eventually because of need for vehicle were forced to have vehicle fixed out of pocket.repair shop told us they had repaired several hyundai sonatas over the last year with rust all in the same spot on the frame and that some couldn't even make it to the shop without a tow.we paid to have a refurbished frame put on the car, at the cost of $1150, not to mention the inconvenience caused over the course of 3 months it took to get it fixed. We had pictures taken of the frame on the car and as it came off.

When i try to fill the vehicle with gas it stops every few cents, simular to when the gas tank is full, even when it is on empty.it takes upwards of 30-45 minutes to fill the gas tank.sometimes the gas gauge is on low when i try to fill it up but it stops filling so often that i have to change pumps to be able to fill my tank to full.i have also had the gas spill out the top of the tank just by trying to put enough gas in my vehicle to make it home. I have done quite a bit of research on the issue and have found it to be a common problem among hyundai vehicle.we bought this car to have a good, reliable vehicle for our daughter to drive.i do not feel safe allowing her to go on a long road trip when she has to spend so long filling the car with gas.

The fuel tank on 2000 hyundai sonata is cracked and leaking gasoline. There is a strong gas odor in the cabin. The fire department and hazmat team responded.

Scc

While driving and upon acceleration, vehicle remains in drive, but does not accelerate properly. Vehicle shifts into netural, at times becoming stuck in between gears. Cause unknown. . consumer stated when vehicle is moving to shift from low to high it sits in between gears and makes a loud noise, the vehicle has been in the shop on several occasions and the transmission has been replaced twice, dealer stated there is no problem.

I have a 2000 hyundai sonata. When the car was first purchased in february of 2006 the car had transmission problems where the car would not accelerate past 25 mph. I had to have the transmission replaced. Then later in that year while driving on the highway at about 65 mph i noticed the car would sway dramatically when you turned the will right. Taking the car back to the dealer they claimed to be just that the car needed an aliment. Now in 2008 i have had to have the right axle of the car replaced because while pulling away from a stop light the right wheel fell from the car at a 45 degree angle. Taking it to a tire shop to have the car inspected they informed me that the whole front underside of the frame was drastically rusted and that driving the car in the state would lead to a wreck or worse. Now i am lost and don't know what to do i have done research on the problem and i have found over 20 reports of this car model having this problem and it is very upsetting that no recall has been placed on these death traps on wheels. Someone needs to take responsibility for this before some dies.

My 2000 sonatastalls and or flutters intermittenly when shifting from first to second and sometimes from 2nd to third. Transmission was replaced but still is doing the same thing. It has been in the the service department many times but i am told "nothing is wrong with it" there was a loud clank when shifting gears even when parked. One of the main rep from hyundai came and checked it out and said it was fine. He also drove the car, but the way he drove it was like at being at an indy 500. I asked him to compare my car with any other car on the lot to see if the noise was normal, he refused. I took the car to another hyundai dealer and was told the car was unsafe to drive because 3 bolts had backed out of the housing thus causing the clanking noise. It still flutters. I have been dealing with this problem since 11-2001. I bought the car in 3-2000. New. The sensoralso had to be replaced twice.

Consumer states that while driving vehicle will not shift correctly.caused by transmission failure.had it replaced 3 times. Mr

I had my vehicle checked for transmission fluid befor sending it to dealership pohanaka hundai subaru. This vehicle sat for 3 days before it was looked at. I told them it was a transmission problem. They said there was no transmission fluid in vehicle. No fluid on ground. They said it was a line that was broke or had a hole in it. About a hour later i was told it was not the line but the radiator.asked if there was any fluid on undercarriage could not answer. Nothing has been done yet to vehicle. This is the problem i have had with them. I would like to know how many transmissions have gone out on the 2000 hundai sonata.

I first heard a whineing coming from the rear of car, it gradually got louder. Dealer says it is rear wheel hub bearings.

Dt*:the contact stated intermittently, the vehicle would not shift out of first gear.the vehicle had to be turned off and the clutch pumped for the vehicle to shift.the vehicle was taken to an independent repair shop where the clutch assembly was replaced.the problem persisted and the repair shop suggested the transmission be inspected by the dealership.

The vehicle had a faulty restraint/harness belt that went underneath both front seats. When the belt loosened it caused the air bag senor to malfunction.

We purchased a brand new 2000 hyundai sonata. Prior to purchase we noticed that my son, who weighs 350 lbs. Could not get either of the rear passenger seat belts to latch and the only way the front seat belt would latch is if the seat was tilted back and slide all the way back, even at that the seat /shoulder harness would press deeply into his body making it very uncomfortable. We asked if factory seat belt extensions were available. They stated that the parts department had them but they were closed (we bought the car on a saturady afternoon). They said we could pick them up on monday.we contacted the dealer on monday and were told that the parts department didn't have them and would have to get them from hyundai. We again contacted the dealer on tuesday and they said that hyundai no longer provided seat belt extensions because of numereous liabilities suits that have been file due to their failure. They stated that they would research other avenues. On 5/17/00 we were informed that the dealer would have a trim shop take care of the problem and we needed to call them to set up an appointment. In discussions with my wife, the trim shop stated that they could fix the problem, but they were not sure that they could match the color.it turns out that they were planned to splice a piece of seat belt material into the exsiting seat belt.i explained to the dealer that i did not believe that, what was presented as "a fix" was neither safe or acceptable.on 5/18/00 the dealer stated that they have "researched all known sources" and their was nothing furture that they could (would) do. The dealer is will to give us our trade back and cancel the deal, but as i explained to the dealer, i believe that hyundai has a legal responsiblity to provide funtioning seat belts for all occupants or they should not be permitted to maket and sell cars in the u.s.a.. As a result my wife has noway to tranport our disabled son. Can someone please help us?

Rear passenger's side seatbelt will no longer retract.

While driving my 2000 hyundai sonata on good road and approaching a traffic light in the left through-lane of a multilane street, i made a quick stop (not and emergency stop) when the light turned yellow. The road was in good condition and dry, and the outside temperature was about about 80 degrees f. Upon making this stop the car pulled unusually sharply to the right - if there had been a car in the right lane, i would have hit it. After this stop, the front tire(s) made unusual squeeling noises upon turning, and the steering felt unusual and shakey.i drove the car directly (about a mile) to the place we were visiting in las vegas and the next morning took the car directly to a hyundai dealer.upon inspection the dealer found that the front suspension frame crossmember (front subframe) had a corrosion hole through the front subbframe and the front subframe had failed, causing the right front (passenger) tire to move out of position and sitting at an angle. The dealer's advice was that this was a safety problem, and it could further fail and result in loss of steering control. They advised that i do not drive the car until this this front subframe was replaced. This is a replaceable piece - which was ordered, and replacement planned. The car was left with the hyundai dealer, and not driven further.this situation is essentially identical to nhtsa reference number 13v354000 for the real suspension for some hyundai vehicles that led to hyundai recall campaign 113 approved in sept 2013. Hyundai records show this car was purchased in illinois (one of the approved 113-recall states) and it was driven there for about 4 years or so. I am the second owner. Hyundai has issued technical service bulletin campaign number 12-01-029 dated october 2012 (supersedes bulletin 09-01-020-2) which addresses this front subframe problem, but, i am told, it is not an approved recall.

Brake rotors are warpped and causing a low brake pedel and a dangerous shimmy in the wheel when ever i try to stop. They resurfaced both front rotors on 4/11/01 with 12,400 miles. At 29,000 miles the problem came back and they refused to fix the problem.first they stated it was caused by my driving, then i was told it was caused by going thru puddles. Then i was told that it was caused by heat and they do not cover heat related problems. The rotors are covered for 5 years, 60,000 miles, but not for the above reasons.

The contact owns a 2000 hyundai sonata. The contact stated that while driving at any speed, the brakes would make a grinding noise and while she attempted to slow down, the vehicle did not respond. The vehicle was taken to an automotive center for repairs. The failure continued a short while later. The brakes were replaced three times including replacement of pads and rotors but the problem continued. The vin was unavailable at the time of the complaint. The failure mileage was approximately 100,000. The current mileage was approximately 113,000.

Both power steering and power brakes failed at the same time in my teenagers sonata.fortunately my son was only going around 25 mph at the time and used the parking brake to stop.the hyundai dealer says there is no connection between the two systems.is there a nhtsa record of this occurring previously in the sonata?

Brakes would not stop the car, the pedal pumped hard five times and then went to the floor, the brakes do not seem to hold in a panic situation, the only thing that stopped me was the car in front of me, this is the second time this has happened to me once resulting in an accident the other time a close call. I do not feel safe in this car and will not allow my wife to drive it and i will not drive this car with my family in the car, the dealer ship said that there is nothing wrong, but i actually was standing there wwhen anothe man complained about the same thing , he only had 1500 miles on his car, a hyundai, also the counter man assistant service person also told me about another man brought his car in just prior to me. Go figure???

While driving 35 mph braking system malfunctioned, causing no braking ability, and resulting in a crash. Also, airbag deployed, causing the driver to hit the head restraint which flew into the rear seat.please provide further information.

While driving wheels locked as ifthe consumer was jamming the brakes.transmission was replaced three times, but vehicle slowed downon its own.then, vehicle accelerated without the pedal being depressed.

When brakes are applied and vehicle is not warmed up, they squeal, problem occurs for 1/2 mile.dealer was contacted and problem can't be duplicated.*jg

When applying brakes during emergency stop, pedal goes to floor, resulting in extended stopping distance. Dealer replaced brake master cylinder, however this did not remedy the problem.. Consumer states unable to lock brakes, the dealer stated this is normal for this type of vehicle.

The front brake rotors on my vehicle have warped, and are getting worse with the more miles i drive. I noted the problem began when the vehicle had approximately 12,000 miles. Whenever i brake from highway speeds the steering wheel shimmies quite badly. Coincidentally, 2 friendsown the 1999 sonata. They, too, have the same problem.one has already had to replace the rotors because the shimmy was so bad he almost lost control of the vehicle while braking to pay a toll. I truly believe the original equipment rotors on the 1999/2000 sonata's are defective in design and purpose.

Brakeswill squeal very loudly when slowing down or coming to a complete stop. Hadbrakes checked and everything was fine. Dealer contacted.

Violent vibration occurs whenbrakes are applied. Dealer has been contacted, andreplaced rotors twice.replacement of rotors did not remedy the problem. Please provide further details.

The contact owns a 2000 hyundai sonata.while driving between 44-55 mph, the vehicle began pulling to the left without assistance.the contact experienced difficulty steering the vehicle and had to exert great effort to turn the steering wheel.the vehicle steered only in one direction without warning.the contact made several attempts to correct the steering before it resumed normal operation.in addition, the contact heard a metal noise outside of the vehicle.the vehicle was towed to an authorized dealer and they stated that the front subframe detached from the body due to rust corrosion.nhtsa campaign id number 09v124000 (suspension) was referenced.the vehicle is in the process of being repaired.the contact was displeased to know that a wheel alignment was required in conjunction to the recall repair.the authorized dealer would not assume financial responsibility for the wheel alignment.the failure mileage was 105,000 and the current mileage was unavailable.updated 10/21/09. *ljthe consumer stated the remedy was not sufficient without a front wheel alignment. The consumer stated the vehicle was fine until the frame broke. The consumer paid for the alignment out of pocket. Updated 10/20/09

No signs of possible problem prior to being unable to drive the vehicle. The driver lost control of the vehicle when driving in a parking lot and was able to avoid additional damage and injury. The vehicle was then towed to a local auto repair shop that diagnosed the problem as a subframe rust issue on the driver's side, which did not allow the control arms to function.

I am the owner of a 2000 hyundai sonata gls v6 and on november 1, 2008 i was traveling home with my cousin when while negotiating a left turn my steering became very difficult and i heard a very loud screeching sound coming from my car. I narrowly escaped an accident as my car began dangerously careening towards a ditch on the right side of the road i was turning onto. From that point on, my steering was severely compromised and i was required to hold the steering wheel almost a full rotation to the left in order to drive in a relatively straight line. When i arrived home, i noticed that my front right wheel was resting at a strange angle, pointing slightly outwards to the right even when all of the other wheels were straight. My uncle, a car mechanic, took a look at the car and informed me that the entire sub frame had rotted and that my front right wheel was on the verge of coming off as the control arm was rusting off of the frame and that the car was not able to be fixed. After further researching the problem, i came across many online articles highlighting problems with 1999-2004 hyundai sonatas and eventually found your defect page that described exactly what had happened to i and many other owners of earlier hyundai sonatas. I feel that hyundai should take responsibility for its faulty models that could have severely injured my passenger and i and could eventually prove to be fatal to others unaware of the problem with their abnormally rotting sub frames. I appreciate your time and effort and hope you can assist others and i in finding a solution to this urgent problem.

I have a 2000 hyundai sonata which i purchased used in 2003 from koeppel hyunda idealer in long island city new york.i have not had any major problems with the car at all.this week i began to notice something not feeling right in the front end, so i brought it to my mechanic.he said the struts needed to be replaced, but that i have a bigger problem than that.it seems that the entire subframe of the car is rusted and rotting away.he tried to locate a used frame from a junkyard,(because this is not covered by the warrenty), but was unable to get one.each person he spoke to at various junk yards knew exactly what he needed , but informed him that a used subframe forthe sonata was impossible to come by because on all the sonatas that were junked, the subframes were rotted through from rust. I'm betting that some of these cars were junked for that very reason.apparently there's a problem here, but hyundai is unwilling to acknowledge it.when i call they tell me they've never heard of this problem before.hard to believe.i was told a new frame would cost me1300 dollars.the only thing the mechanic can offer to do for me is to weld steel to the parts of the frame that are still solid and try to reinforce the frame.at this point i am very frustrated, because i work at night and need a car to get back and forth.i have been paying for a rental for the past 3 days and it's getting expensive.hyundai needs to address this problem before somebody gets seriously hurt.

After taking my 2000 sonata to town fair tires to replace a damaged tire i was told "you have a hole in your frame...you should get that looked at" ...so the following monday i took it in to my mechanic who told me that townfair tires never should have let me leave the lot. My a-frame had a 6" piece completely rotted and missing, near my front right tire. He said one good pothole and my wheel would have come off. I'm told it will cost $1,000 to fix. And if i decide to do this, i'm out of a car for a week!! and while i wait i'm still out of a car anyway! i'm hearing more and more stories of other sonata owners having this very same problem. I'm lucky that i wasn't on the highway doing 60mph and had my wheel fall off.

I took my car to my personal mechanic on 3/19/2008 because the car was making a squeaking noise on an irregular basis and it was not steering properly. He took it for a drive w/ myself in the car. It made no noise and it did not "pull". He reassured that everything was ok at that time, however, if it became a problem to let him know. The squeaking returned intermittently. A little over a week later on 3/28/2008, i was driving from my home in scranton, pa to my son's dr's appointment in philadelphia, pa. I was on the pa turnpike for a little over an hour, during which time i noted to my mother (driving with me) that the car was going straight, however the steering wheel was turned left. Upon getting onto the schuylkill expressway i heard a squeal on the tight left turn (a very dangerous, high traffic highway) and stayed on that for approx another 10miles. I turned onto another highway. Immediately after getting off the highway i stopped at the first intersection. After stopping i tried to pull out and there was a loud clunking noise, smoke from under the hood and the car would not move at all. While i was stuck in the middle of a dangerous intersection (the cops even drove right on by), i was frantic considering the fact that if had happened seconds sooner, it would no doubt have been tragic accident involving not only myself, my mother and my eight year old son but also others on the highway. The mechanic, who evaluated the car the previous week, stated that the sub-frame was "rotted and rusted out" which resulted in the axle dropping out of the transmission. He couldn't find used parts. The junk yards said all of the '99 and '00 sonatas have this problem. This lack of knowledge put my family's safety in grave danger.no there was no crash and no there was no property damage. That was only due to the fortunate timing of this incident. Please contact hyundai to recall this part no one should be put in this life threatening situation.

The contact owns a 2000 hyundai sonata.while making a turn at approximately 5 mph, the vehicle jerked to the right and then completely shut off.the contact exited the vehicle and discovered that the front passenger side tire was shredded and the subframe failed.the vehicle would start, but it did not move.the vin is not included in the recall.the recall number was unknown.the current and failure mileages were 140,000.

Frame rusted out on right front passenger side. Right front wheel came loose collapsed, breaking trans axle.....repair costs over $2000.00...not...including possible damage to transmission, if i did get framerepaired...many conversations with hyundai, never told there was a recall on this problem with this vehicle... Junked car....found out about recall nbr-78622 after getting rid of the car....hyundai told me, since i no longer own the car....i am out of luck....

This complaint involves a 2000 hyundai sonata. I was having routine maintenance done on the vehicle and was notified during service that the entire front end suspension and frame on my car is rusted out. When i looked at it, there were large rust holes apparent in the crossmembers and every weld i could see is completely covered in rust. My mechanic advised me that this is not normal for an eight year old car and that it may be unsafe to drive it much longer for fear that the suspension or frame will collapse.

I am writing in regard to my 2000 hyundai sonata and its sub frame corrosion and the frustration i am feeling from this situation. I was driving to work on friday august 27th around 520 a.m. And had been on the i-10 freeway about 5 miles going around 65 miles an hour, the road soon has a speed limit of 75 mph ' it's a 25 mile stretch of desert and very heavily traveled by 18 wheelers making the haul to california (los angeles).anyway, i had just passed a semi and was about to pass another (with one behind me) when i felt something like metal on pavement and thought something was terribly wrong with my front right tire... I did all i could to get off the freeway (on the left hand side) the semi behind me almost rear ended me along with several other vehicles on their way to work ' all i heard was horns, tires squealing, and saw people flipping me off all while i was trying to get off the freeway.i was somehow able to get the car off the road (barely over the yellow line).i tried to look at the front right side but the car was so close to the freeway i would have gotten hit.i didn't know whether to stay in the car or stand outside (if the car would have been hit either way would have been deadly).a police man came by about 10 minutes later and asked if i was okay and had me try to start the car ' the car would not move as if the gears were gone ' he used his patrol car to move the car from the roadway and down into the desert median.it was at this point that we took a look and could see that the right front tire was facing out approximately 45 degrees with wheel housing and fender damage.i called a friend, and a tow truck and went to work. The car was taken to a mechanic's house and i was toldafter his inspection that the lower control arm completely separated/detached from the sub frame, with chunks of the frame still attached to the control arm hardware (noticeable severe rust/corrosion) when the lower control arm detached from the sub frame.

On 2/22/09 i noticed the front tires on my 2000 hyundai sonata were very worn and the wires were showing . The tires were in good shape when they were rotated to the front 1/29/09. After getting several quotes on new tires, i choose our local hyundai dealer to replace the tires.the car was taken in on 2/25/09 to the local hyundai dealer to have tires replaced. After thetech had replaced the tires, he was going to check the alignment. Upon checking the alignment he notice that the frame by the front passenger tire was rusted out and cracked. He recommended not doing the alignment and stated the car wasn't safe to drive.the next day 2/26/09 i contacted dealership by phone about an estimate to fixthe problem, they gave me a quote of $ 1300.00 for new subframe and to replace it then do an alignment.after deciding i really didn't want to pay that much money, i went to a local body shop later that morning to get an estimate. The body shop owner gave me an estimate of $ 1035.00 to replace with a newsubframe and recommended possibly using a used part froma salvage yard, if he could find one. The car was taken to the body shop and left there the next day 2/27/09. When i went to pick the car up the owner stated that " he had tried several savage yards to find a used subframe and couldn' t find one because the 1999 and 2000 hyundai sonata were notorious for rusting out on the subframe and my only choice was getting a new subframe and replacing it for $ 1035.87". Later that evening i done some more research on the internet about subframes on 2000 hyundai sonatas. Ilearned that it was very common problem that the subframe rusted out on the 1999-2002 hyundai sonatas from your web site and many others. I learned that n.h.t.s.ahas began an investigation into the matter and i wanted to notify n.h.t.s.a about the problem that i am also having with my vehicle. I notified hyundai on 2/27/09 by phone about my problem and i am waiting for a response.

On august 25th, 2007,my wife and i were driving home on the southern state parkway. There was quite some traffic (stop-and-go kind of thing) so we weren't at a high speed. When the person in front of me had to stop short, i stepped on the brakes, and the front right wheel of my car sunk, and there was a loud noise like metal scratching against the pavement . After i finally managed to stop the car without getting hit by another driver, and checking to see if my wife was ok, i got out of the car just to find out that my front right wheel was in an almost horizontal position.after towing the car to the repair shop, my mechanic found out that the axle and the lower control arm broke because the engine cradle was severely rusted, and therefore there was no support for the axle and the control arm to sustain the weight and pressure of the sudden stop. Needless to say, i believe that my wife and i are very lucky to not have been injured, or to cause somebody else an injury. The repairs were costly, but i had to do it. I need the car to work, and we live in a place were the car is an everyday necessity.the cradle for this vehicle was damaged and completely rusted away and needed to be replaced completely at a cost of $2,897.22. We also incurred the following expenses due to the cradle failing while we were driving the car on the southern state parkway on august 25th, 2007: towing charge of $168.37, car rental charges of $164.53. A written estimate from a local body shop for $996.59 should be added to cover the body damage sustained when the right side axle and right side lower control arm cracked, causing the front right side wheel to bend the right side bumper cover. My mechanic kept the old cradle up to a couple of months ago, when after dealing with the local dmv office and explaining the situation they informed us that "a dmv judge wouldn't even look at this case". I do still have pictures of the rusted cradle where you can see the fist-sized holes in it.

Noise noted when attempting right turn. Drove & came to stop-heard loud noise from right front end - car pulled right & tire popped out. Car undriveable. After exam by mechanic, it was noted the right front car frame had snapped in half. Car has never been involved in car crash - i am the original owner. With that particular defect, had it gone over a pothole on the interstate hwy @ hwy speed, it could have very likely caused a fatality accident.

The contact owns a 2000 hyundai sonata. While driving 5 mph, the front passenger side wheel detached from the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to an auto shop where the failure was diagnosed as a control arm failure and rusted subframe. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 140,000.

Steering and stability unstable. Mechanic tells me that the rear sub frame is rusty and cracked. The entire frame was replaced around 2010 because of a recall.when you hit a bump lose traction and becomes unstable. Want to know if the replacement frame has a warranty. Want to keep the car still runs great. 170,000 miles

Rustrear control arm broke from subframe, made noise enough to take to mechanic who found problemwhy is it that only front subframe & front control arms were included in recall? the rear parts are also rusting.... Parts are made from same material = same problem ... The recall should include both the front and the back. Why would only one side of the car rust and not the other ridiculous!!

There was an erratic operation when the acceleratorpedal is applied.the dealer could not duplicate the problem.the horn malfunctioned, the door(s) closed by themselves, and when the vehicle was driven pass the 40 mph mark, the transmission operated as if were catching up. Scc

2000 hyundai sonata- front subframe was recalled due to deterioration from ice and salt. I live in maine. My entire subframe, front and rear is completely rusted and deteriorated.nothing has been done to fix it, but is very dangerous and i was told by the dealership this car is unsafe to drive and could cause an accident at any time.

Hello.i own a 2000 hyundai sonata.i took it for an inspection in april of 2008.it failed due to the subframe being rusted.the mechanic showed me the rust.it was a 'fist-sized' rust hole on the subframe. I believe it was on the driver's side (not sure).i got a quote for $1400 from a hyundai dealership to replace the subframe.hyundai representatives then made a 'good will' gesture and decided to pay for the replacement of the subframe in full.it took six weeks for the subframe to arrive at the shop.also, i was told the bolts that hold the subframe to frame of the car were rusted as well, they are being replaced.the car has 85,300 miles on it and i am the second owner.i believe the first owner lived in new york, i live in pennsylvania. I've been reading about this issue and some people have mentioned how their tires went bald quickly and seemed out of alignment.i had a similar issue in that the tires wore unevenly and caused the car to veer significantly to the right.i don't know if this could be an early sign of the weakening of the subframe, i just wanted to mention it.i believe there is an ongoing investigation to this problem.it is nhtsa action # pe08029.

Sub-frame corrosion resulted in a loss of control and vehicle disablement due to wheel collapse.

Rusting on sub frame, right front location of car.

Hyundai 2000 sonata subframe rust caused wheel failure.

I own a 2000 hyundai sonata. I took it for an inspection on july 24th of 2008. It failed due to the front cross member being rusted out. The mechanic showed me the rust. It was a 'fist-sized' rust hole on the subframe. The car has 61,800 miles on it and i am the second owner. Both the first owner and i live in pennsylvania. I have been reading about this issue and some people have experienced terrible accidents. I believe there is an ongoing investigation to this problem. It is nhtsa action # pe08029. The hyundai should take the action for this severe defect.

While driving my 2000 hyundai sonata my left front wheel fell off. My father and the tow truck operator said the lower control arm had come off after looking further we noticed the sub frame had broken apart due to rot. This car was well cared for and im finding it hard to accept this as normal. After looking online i have seen this to be common on this model. My daughter and myself were exiting a highway and the car seemed to be pulling. When i got on a secondary road it got worse. Within a few miles the car just stopped. This happened saturday and im calling hyundai monday. With luck they will deal with it.

The contact owns a 2000 hyundai sonata. The contact statedwhile driving at approximately 10 mph, he heard a loud thump. The vehicle began to independently decrease in speed before coming to a stop. The vehicle did not stall and the engine continued to run. The vehicle was towed to local repair facility where the contact was informed that the sub frame was corroded and had fractured from the vehicle. The vehicle was repaired at the contact's expense. The manufacturer was not contacted. The vin was not available. The failure mileage was approximately 159,150 and the current mileage was approximately 159,200.

The subframe on my 2000 hyundai sonata has rusted and broke in half causing my half shaft to brake apart and causing the right side front tire to come detached and my car was stuck and not drivable!

I have a 2000 hyundai sonata and took it to meineke, they told me the whole front subframe was rotted out and needed to be replaced, which would cost 1750.00.the car us no longer under warranty but from what i have read, there is a defect with the metal hyundai has used with some of its models, especially the sonata.if it is a defect, is the car going to be recalled.i feel the dealership should fix this without any cost to me.what is the status of the complaint, is there a recall on the horizon.i don't have 1750.00 to fix my car and have to take it off the road because it is to dangerous to drive.the engine is literally falling out of the bottom of the car, the mechanic at meineke showed me that both sides of the sub frame was rusted and the tires were slanted out because of the stress of the engine on the rusted frame.i literally could have been in a serious accident.please let me know if hyundai is responsible for fixing this defect.

Our 17 yr old daughter was driving 35-40 mph when all of the sudden the car started shaking violently and the ability to steer the car was non existent.she fought with the steering to try to get it off the very busy road without success.car had to be towed to our mechanic who found the sub frame had rusted out.the car then had to be towed at our expense to the dealer.we now have to rent a car for the duration the sonata is in the shop.hyundai is not taking any responsibility for towing or rental expenses, or any other damage to the car.this recall was issued in april of 2009, it is now october 2009, why were we not notified of this very serious recall?thank heavens nothing serious happened to our daughter.hyundai needs to take more responsibility for this i for one feel there should be a class action suit brought upon hyundai and cover every car in all states regardless of "salt" and make restitution for all expenses incurred, such as towing, car rental and all other vehicle expenses that were caused as a result of too little too late.bottom line, they are negligent by not sending all owners of record a recall notice!!!!we are the original owners of this car, same address and phone number that they have on record in their database... Why were we not notified????they need to be held accountable.

The contact owns a 2000 hyundai sonata. The contact stated that the vehicle began pulling to the right while driving approximately 35 mph. She was only able to drive straight when she forced the steering wheel in that direction. She expected the failure to be related to the alignment; however, a local mechanic stated that the subframe was covered with rust, and completely broken in half on both the driver and passenger side. The passenger side control arms were also separated from the frame. She has been unable to notify the dealer and the manufacturer of the failure.photos are available upon request. The current and failure mileages were approximately 130,000.

My son went over a speed bump and had his right front tire fold in at the top. It was found out by a repair shop that the right control arm had separated from the sub-frame which was very corroded. Two attempts at getting a used sub-frame at a salvage yard also revealed corroded sub-frames. The sub-frame had to be replace new. A power steering return line lying against the sub-frame was also corroded and leaking and had to be repaired. The old sub-frame is being held at the repair shop so that i can document the damage with photographs.

I have a 2000 sonata with 140,000. On a trip this past summer i noticed rust flakes in my parking space. Upon further inspection i found almost a softball sized hole in the frame on the passenger side. I took it to a hyundai dealer, they told me the warranty had expired and there was nothing they could do. I took it to a local shop and had the hole cleaned out and a piece of metal welded in so i could feel some what safe getting home. Once home i called hyundai america who said they have never heard of such a thing.

Rusted subframe on hyundai sonata gls caused cv joint to come off while driving 10 mph, company only paying to fix subframe, hyundai not paying for tow or rental car.

I am unable to get my car inspected due to drivers side front fame is rotted.my car was due for inspection in april.i don't feel i can sell the car .and i am still paying on a car loan which i owe $2000.00.

We talk to consumer affair and gave them the vin # and they told us that the car was not cover in the usa that the car was made out side the usa and that we needed to call canada or new mexico to see what they will do, sub frame rust under our 2000 hyundai sonata right wheel is almost off and we have not fixed the car we are needing to find what we need to do on this matter please email me to let us know what needs to be done.

Son was driving vehicle and another vehicle had suddenly stopped in front of him and he had to apply the brakes suddenly and turn his wheel. Right front lower control arm pulled completely out of the of the engine cradle causing damage to fender and suspension and drive train. Insurance company has totaled vehicle because of this. No correction has been done as of yet.

The sub frame has rusted out on my 2000 hyundai sonata. I have been told it is very dangerous to drive. I purchased this car 5 yrs ago from a dealer in lexington, ky. I have been told it is highly unusual that a car that is 8 yrs. Old would have such a severe problem and that i should not keep the car, or that i should replace the frame which will be very expensive to do.

2000 hyundai sonata sub frame rusted out, this vehicle is used by my son to commute to college daily and it's a miracle that he didn't have an accident.the right front tire also needs replacing even though it is almost new due to the damage caused by the sub-frame literally falling apart .i see this has been investigated before, why was no recall issued?

Ref: nhtsa number pe08029 i am the original owner of my 2000 hyundai sonata and have a rusted cross member have 140,000 miles.

The contact owns a 2000 hyundai sonata.the contact stated while driving 5 mph and the front passenger side control arm broke off the sub frame due to corrosion on the sub frame, causing the vehicle to come to a complete stop.the contact had the vehicle towed to a dealer to have the sub frame repaired under the suspension recall (09v124000).previously the contact took the vehicle to alocal mechanic to have the sub frame inspected, at the time the mechanic did not find any rust or corrosion on the frame.the contact stated the manufacturer never informed her about the suspension recall.the failure mileage was 140,000.

I'm seeking help getting hyundai usa motor co. To pay for the repairs necessary to make my 2000 sonata safe to drive and to try and start an investigation of the need of a recall on all similar sonata models 1999 ' 2001 and possibly 2002 ' 2005 as well.the problem is the front sub-frame was not designed with sufficient corrosion resistance and is rotting away.hyundai customer affairs (1-800-633-5151) states that because the vehicle is 8 years old and has 120k miles on it that it is out of warranty.i believe that an automobile manufacturer has certain liabilities for safety and the structural integrity of the vehicles they produce beyond the normal warranty period.the first i new of the issue was when i hit a pothole in a parking lot and the car immediately started pulling to the right.the next morning i jacked the front of the car up thinking a wheel bearing was gone or something.i was shocked when i looked under the car and saw the 'elbow' that comes from the floorboard area to the wheel was rotted through on the corner and splitting down the seam.the driver's side is also corroded but not nearly as bad.i called hyundai consumer affairs and was instructed to take it to the nearest dealer for evaluation.they informed me that the sub-frame needed to be replaced and would cost $2300.after several phone calls back to consumer affairs they won't change their opinion that because it's out of warranty they are not responsible. Since they have had to fix this on other vehicles shouldn't the dealers be on the lookout for the corroded sub-frame.my sonata was at the dealer several times between 2003 -2006 and the vehicle was still under warranty.my main concern is there are people out there driving cars that the frame has been weakened by corrosion and could have a catastrophic failure.if i had hit a pothole on the interstate instead of in a parking lot, my wife's lawyer could very well be addressing this issue instead of me.

I was driving my 2000 hyundai sonata at 15 miles/hr on good-condition road when i heard a cracking noise andfelt the front right side sink to the ground. I discovered that the front right wheel was completely detached from the frame, and the front axle was displaced. There was serious corrosion on the right side of the frame where the point of breaking was.no one was hurt since the speed was slow. But it could be very serious if driving on the freeway. The frame / axle are original parts and have never been repaired previously. I found similar reports online (see the following link: http://www.motorauthority.com/news/industry/hyundai-sonata-frames-rust-us-nhtsa-investigates/ ). I think this could be something that needs to be recalled.

I've had a 2000 hyundai sonata for a little over a year, and recently i had to take it in for what i thought was just an alignment problem because the inside of my tires where wearing out too fast. So i took it to a local shop to have it looked at, and they told me that the engine/trans cradle(sub-frame) was almost totally rust out and that it has been that way for a very long time(which also meant that the dealer i got the loan from sold me the car knowing it was in bad shape). It was rusted out so bad that the control arms where about to fall off and that the car was very unsafe to drive. The dealer i got the car from does not cover those parts under the service agreement(the car is out of manufacturer's warranty with over 137000 miles). So i took the car to a frame shop that wanted over $1800 to install the cradle and control arms. The end of the story is that i'm still drive the car, because its my only way to work, and still trying to save money to get the thing fixed. I'm just wandering which pot hole i hit is going to knock the control arms off the rest of the way.

My seventeen year old daughter was traveling 10-15 m/hr returning home from work and has she turned onto our street our 2000 hyundai sonata had a completed right front wheel collapse/separation from the car. Upon inspection at our local garage it was determined that this wasa result of complete subframe rusting of my sonata. This was a very expense repair (mat'l costs alone were $1,600.00) and more important i feel this is a safety issue that should be addressed by hyundai.i'm not sure what action i can take on this (looking for guidance) because of the high mileage (117,049 miles), but a car subframe should not rust out like this in 8 years.

2000 hyundai sonatafront sub frame passenger side, large hole rusted through sub frame assembly right behind lower control arm. Car just aligned and is now out of alignment, took it back to mechanic and he showed me the hole in sub frame, right wheel is now about 2 inches set back and caster is kicked out at bottom of tire, looks very dangerous, am taking car to dealer to se if they will repair, i am original owner car has 88,000 milesdealer seems to be aware of the problem, i believe i have just caught the problem in time before injuries may have occurred, i am reporting this problem only in the hope others may be so lucky, the wheel could separate and create a real problem for anyone driving the car, i feel the manufacturer should recall the car to fix issue before someone gets killed.

My wife was driving to work on june 9, 2008.she had to stop suddenly and heard a pop in front end of car.car swerved to right and she thought she was going to hit another car.drove car slowly to hatfield hyundai.they had a long wait for the part, and we got the car back on june 26, 2008.the service order said "replace the sub-frame it was very rusty."the car is a 2000 sonata and had 116,844 miles on it when this incident occurred.this is in line with your investigation pe08029.they did not charge us for the repair.

The contact owns a 2000 hyundai sonata.the contact took his vehicle to a local mechanic due to a noise caused by the wheel bearings.the mechanic informed him that the frame of the vehicle, which supported the engine, was rusting.the mechanic also noticed a hole in the right front side of the subframe behind the right front wheel.the failures are nearly identical to the ones noted in investigation number pe08029.the dealer has not been notified and the vehicle has not been repaired.the failure and current mileages were 148,000. When i brought car in for inspection, was told front sub-frame was rotted out. There is a six inch hole in it. The car has always been well maintained, it has low miles, and it should not have rotted out like it has already. If i had kept driving it the entire wheel could have fallen off, possibly hurting or killing me and my family. Have not corrected it, as it's at least a thousand dollar fix.

The car wouldn't pass inspection.i was told the subframe was rotted and needed to be replaced.luckily it is a bolt on part, but cost well over $1,000 for parts and labor. I was told the replacement part was of heavier metal and had more drainage holes than the original.

My mechanic found a fist-sized hole in the subframe of my 2000 hyundai sonata v6.there are 125,000 miles on the car.my mechanic told me that this should not occur and it is very dangerous.at this point it has not been repaired, because it is very expensive and i can not be without my car for the time of the repair.

Took my 2000 hyundai sonata to have tires alignedon a friday morning and was total the frame was rusted but i had a bent tie rod and it needed fixed first. Left the tire shop and before going 10 miles i was stopped at a traffic light and when the light turned green i pressed on the gas and then i heard a loud pop and the car did not move. Luckily the vehicle was not moving when this happened or i could have been hurt and i could have hurt someone else. When i got out to see what happened , my right side tire was bent out i had the car towed to a garage to have what i thought was to have the tie rod fixed, the mechanic called me on monday to tell me that it was not the tie rod that it was the sub frame that was rusted out on both sides, and i should take it back to the dealer because this should never happen.i then had the car towed to the dealership to have them check it. On wednesday when i checked on the car i was told that the parts were ordered, that it would be considered a policy adjustment, i then wanted to know if i could be given a car since this was nothing that i did to the car and i was without transportation. Of course i was told that, that was not policy and no loaner car would be given.

I was called by my local mechanic this evening to come look at my 2000 sonata while it was on the rack to replace the alternator and belts.he told me i had a serious problem and needed to come see it for myself. There is a rusted out section of the unibody subframe on the right front just under where the swaybar attaches. You can push the metal and it falls apart.it goes around, almost like a seam, but has not made it all the way, yet.the left front is also showing signs of spot rusting. I was going to contact a body shop to see if it could be repaired and was searching online for advise when i began noticing that i am not the only person with this problem.i was looking for information on repairing this before someone got hurt. While researching online i noticed that there is an nhtsa odi preliminary evaluation that has just begun concerning reports similar to mine.i contacted hyundai consumer affairs and they advised me to have the car towed to my local hyundai dealer for evaluation and not to drive the vehicle until it has been seen by a hyundai dealer.i was told that the regional department of hyundai would contact me after that.i am taking it to them on may 2.my hyundai case # is 3282801.

When i was at the grade school picking up my daughter, the car started to lurch and then stopped.i got out and the front tire on the passenger side was twisted to the side.the right axle had blown out. I could no longer drive the car.i was in the process of moving back to illinois at the end of may i had to rent a car dolly to tow the car behind the u-haul.upon taking it to our automotive repair shop, he called us the next day to say that the front right frame cradle had rusted in half.we went to take a look and yes it was rusted through the cradle with a spot the size of an orange the frame had broken in half.we have finally gotten to the hyundai dealer.they have said that they will fix the axle and the frame.but the 2 front tires are now not any good 1 of which was new, they will not replace either of them.they said that tire dealer that put the new one on should of noticed the problem and so it is their fault.also when the tow truck went to pull the car up on the flat bed the front right tire gave way and bent under the car in the process doing damage to the front fender, this also hyundai said that it was the fault of the tow truck driver and that they would not pay to fixed it.as of today july 9, 2008 i am not sure what is going to be fixed or not.

The engine cradle has a fist sized hole rusted out of it causing the passenger side wheel to bow outward and the alignment is completely out.this car has less than 100,000 miles and is less than 10 years old, the frame should not be rusted out already.

Pulling up to a left turn into the daytona sam's club, the right front wheel and lower wishbone assembly completely separated from the vehicle's sub-frame and my wheel came off the car.my mechanic determined that the sub-frame had completely rusted out from the inside.there is not a speck of rust anywhere else on the car!it was by god's grace that i was only going about 15mph for just moments earlier i was doing 70mph on i95!my mechanic told me that this would have been catastrophically deadly!it only had about 58,500 miles on it at the time of the separation.i have been told by someone who used to work for hyundai that this is a know defect because hyundai used recycled metal to manufacture these frames without using rust inhibitors.i have the defective parts in storage and i have clear photographs showing the rust holes where the wishbone bolts pulled out of the sub-frame and i would like to make them available to you.there are thousands of these cars on the road with this potentially catastrophic defect and hyundai is burying its head in the sand.i contacted them and their attitude was that it was not their problem since i was the second owner.i contacted them twice, and they said they would investigate, but they never called me again.i have over $2000 in repairs to replace this sub-frame and make the vehicle drivable; not including the body damage caused by the wheel hitting the right fender.hyundai is conducting itself in a wholly reckless manor as this defect can, and probably will, take human lives as these sub-frames rust apart!this car has been a nightmare with other problems, but none i would contact nhtsa over these since they are not-safety related, but however, this issue has a huge potential for loss of life and must be addressed!

I was driving down the road when i had to suddenly turn my steering wheel quickly to the right. Upon doing so, i heard a loud noise, and was unable to steer my car.it was taken to a hyundai service department, and i was told that the sub frame had rusted out and let everything come down on my suspension.the cost of the repairs would be $1,883.00.the service department gave me the number of hyundai consumer affairs (1-800-633-5151).i called them and was told that there was a problem, and they were handling them on a case by case basis.they gave me a case number and forwarded my case to the regional investigator.within 2 days, i was called by the service department and told that hyundai agreed that it was a major rust problem and agreed to pay for the repairs to be done on my car.

After failing a new york state inspection, i was shocked to discover that my 2000 hyundai sonata gls had a rusted engine cradle the size of a fist on the right hand side.no previous inspections had indicated that there was this impending hazard.consequently, i can no longer drive my vehicle, and according to the mechanic, it was a mere matter of days or a simple rough road that would have caused my subframe to detach without any prior warning.i have contacted hyundai and am awaiting a response and fully expect them to not only repair the engine cradle, but make owners aware that models manufactured between 1999 and 2002 face this hazard to themselves and others on the road due to their own manufacturing defects.

Subframe rusted out on 2000 hyundai sonata.

Rust hole in sub frame found while doing an oil change.

I was on my way to work, when i drove over a pot hole and the front end on my car is now resting on my tires due to severe rust in the frame.

We have a 2000 hyundai sonata. The steering went out of control and nearly threw my stepson (age 23) under a tractor trailer. Upon taking the vehicle to the shop to see what was wrong, the new tires were completely wore out with metal sticking out. It was discovered that the subframe of the sonata was rusted completely in two. This is a devastating concern because this could have cost my child a life. The sonata actually belonged to my sixteen year old daughter! after looking on the internet to see if there has been a problem, i find that there is and has been an ongoing problem in which no one has bothered to recall the vehicles and get them off he road! very concerning!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! my daughter or stepson could have lost their life!!!!! nothing has been done to correct the problem and i have researched to find there is many accidents resulting from same problem!

Backing out of drive, right front fell. I am told the sub frame is rusted

I recently bought a 2000 hyundai sonata and was told that there was an alignment problem. At first it wasn't too bad but i took it in to get the alignment fixed. The mechanic asked me to come look at the car. When i went under the vehicle the mechanic pointed out to me that there was a gaping hole in the sub frame of this vehicle. I was told that if hadn't come in when i did this problem could have killed me. Worst off is that this vehicle only has 68,000 miles on it. I don't know what i am going to do now that i have a vehicle that i can't use and not enough money to fix it.

My son was getting on the on ramp to i-35 turning to the right. He was going about 20 mph and the car made a noise and started grinding. He pulled it off to the side and called me. I called my other son who is a mechanic to go and take a look at it, he said that it looked like a bearing had worn out and came apart and it needed towed. We had it towed to a trusted service station that put it on the lift and said the front subframe/crossmember had rusted through causing the control arm and cv axle to come apart. I called hyundai and they said the car was out of warranty. Well our car has been sitting at the service station for eight months waiting for a used subframe that isn't rusted through. They the service station has ordered 4 used subframes and all have been rusted through. My brother runs a body shop in n.c. And has been looking for one for us and cant find any that aren't rusted. Supposedly as soon as there is one that isn't rusted its sent to "the salt belt" for a thousand dollars to repair a car that should not need it. Our family has 2 cars one 13 years older than this sonata and one 16 years older than this sonata. Their frames aren't rusted through both have been outside in the salt and snow more than this sonata. This is a major problem this part should be the last thing to rust through on a car. From the complaints i've read on this site and others hyundai is not doing anything about this.hyundai wants 13 hundred dollars just for the subframe and its about the same for labor. It is just a matter of time before someone gets hurt because of this.

The alignment appeared to be off on my 2000 hyundai sonata. On oct. 1, 2006, the vehicle was inspected at a local firestone station. The manager showed me the cause of the mis-alignment: the original engine cradle had nearly rusted through on the passenger side of the car. There was a rusted out hole in the engine cradle that my hand could have fit through. The vehicle was subsequently towed to a hyundai dealer's service center. Due to the price of the repairs compared to the value of the car, i elected to forgo repairs. The car will be sold to a salvage yard for parts. The car had been at a hyundai dealer for repairs in ohio in march and may 2006. At neither time was rust identified as a threat to the integrity of the vehicle. Thankfully, the defect was discovered before accidents or injuries occurred.

I had to replace my subframe in june 2007 (2000 hundai sonata gls v6).luckily it was caught before an accident happened.it very obviously was due to problems the same problems listed in campaign 089.why am i not being offered a full refund for my damage as well?because i bought the car from my sister, they would not honor the warrantee.i bought this car in 2005 and it had 28,000 miles on it.

2000 hyundai sonata gls v6rust and corrosion on subframe (about the size of a basketball)front suspension problems -we recently brought our car into a local strauss auto to have a basic check up before state inspection. They spotted the rust and warned it is very severe and needs to be taken care of asap!- they also stated the suspension problems are most likely occurring because of the subframe not supporting the car 100%-we feel this is truly a defect by hyundai and should be taken care of by them!

Rusted frame, unsafe to drive.

Subframe on the front chasis was severely rusted through, on the verge of losing the wheel.discovered during a routine oil change.mechanic advised driving the car due to the dangerous condition and imminent probability of losing the wheel.

I was approaching a red light and when i pressed my brakes my driving axle separated from my front driver's side tire. After that happened a mechanic lifted my car up and we saw that the frame was almost completely covered with rust. I called the customer service number for the company that makes the vehicle where i was informed that the vehicle frame is under recall and is to be replaced. Once the vehicle was taken to the car dealership, the service department informed me that the bolts had seized to the frame because of the rust and the only way to replace the frame would be to cut the bolts off. By doing so other parts would have to be replaced resulting in fees coming to a total of $3500, which is more than the value of the car. Because the frame was under recall, i was under the assumption that all damage to the car resulting from the recalled frame would be covered but the dealership refuses to cover the parts and labor resulting from the rusty frame.

I currently own a year 2000 hyundai sonata v6 gls.on the morning of july 17th, 2008 at approx. 3:45 am i was driving my vehicle on a newspaper route for a local distribution company.i was making a right hand turn off a main street onto a side street as i my steering wheel jearked to the right very quickly, and my car out of the blue went out of allignment, to a degree that it would appear that i must have crashed into something.but i did not.as time went on, my tires began shreading themselves onto the area surrounding the actual two front tires.when i went to a local firestone to get a allignment and two new front tires, they lifted it up and informed me that the problem was a part called the "subframe" and it was extremely rusted on the right hand side.after reading various reports on the internet, i decided to write a formal complaint on this vehicle.i have yet to contact hyundai directly as it is the weekend, but my intent is to inform them on monday morning.the approx. Mileage on this vehicle is 122,000 miles.

Right front wheel became detached and car skidded to a halt on busy road.the same thing happened 8 weeks ago to the left front wheel. I have since seen on the internet that this is a known issue with this make/model of hyundai.

The contact's spouse owns a 2000 hyundai sonata.while driving 5 mph out of a parking lot, the contact heard a snap and the vehicle stopped moving.she exited the vehicle and discovered that the front passenger side tire was laying inward.the vehicle was towed to a mechanic, who stated that the subframe failed.the current and failure mileages were 110,000.

Went for oil change and technician noticed extreme rot on the front sub frame which holds up the engine and holds the tires and struts. It is currently in the shop awaiting parts which i was told were on backorder since may 19, 2008.this is a major safety issue and have researched and found that the defect is a known issue with the 2000 hyundai sonatas.

2000 hyundai sonata gls v6 - subframe is cracked and rusted with large holes in it. No longer driving it due to safety concern. Read about nhtsa investigating this issue and possible recall. Found it when had oil changed - the mechanic was shocked and said not to drive it - too dangerous.

The contact owns a 2000 hyundai sonata. Whenever the vehicle struck bumps in the roadway at speeds below 50 mph, he would hear an extremely loud noise outside of the vehicle.the driver inspected the vehicle and detected that the frame which connects the rear tires axle had severe corrosion.the authorized dealer was notified of the failure.the vehicle has not been repaired at this time.the failure mileage was 172,000. The vin was unavailable.

Frame has rusted out can no longer drive my car andi need it to get to work.

Car has never been in an accident ,and has had 1 owner.vechicle is housed in central n.j. ,vechicle has been serviced as to hyundai's service manual recomendations.also vechicle has recently been serviced just before manufacturers warranty expired for defective transmission servos (car was on liftat time of service ).also this vechicle still has orginal exhaust system including muffler.onaugust30,2007 my self my child and my nephews were driving on the parkway at 65 mph at approximatly 9 pm when the transmission exploded and left me stranded intraffic lanewith vechicles approaching at high rates of speed and swerving around me there was no way to get out of harms way i was trapped in car with children we called 911 and the state police had to push vechicle to a safe zone where we waitedfor a tow truck.uponfurther inspectionof vechicle it was found to be caused by a severly rotted subframe which caused the motor and transmission to drop causing the axle to be torn through transmission housing and the lower control arm to break away from rotted subframe also(as stated earlier the vechicle was never invloved in an accident and has no body or undercarrriage rust including the exhaust system. This is a serious structual problem as subframe carries entire drivetrain (motor and transmission and all stering components).at this time nothing has been done by hyundai to rectify this situation we were toldits not covered by warranty we were nerer made aware of any problem at time of service at authorized hyundai dealer. Still waiting to hear from a supervisor from hyundai consumer affairs.

Front subframe corrosion.

Got the sonata in 2006.was diligent with the oil changing and the works.it got to 127k miles so we took it in for the 120mi service as we intend to have the car in its good condition .. Seemed ok.. After driving it for 2 weeks my wife resumed to useit to go to work.she said about it needing another alignment check coz it was driving funny.said we'll have it check on her next day off work.my wife drives 39 miles to work on freeway (i-70; 670. Us-315), it is no laughing matter when someone is driving 65 mph merging and changing lanes during rush hour and start losing control of the car. She was trying to get to the shoulder but she couldn't even steer it and one big clunk sound the car stopped, the front right tear was off.luckily she wasn't injured, but she was so shaken up, she didn't even reach the side road, and she could easilyb struck by other cars, police had to push the car off the road.as with the other complaints here, my mechanic said its the subframe and we contacted hyundai and was told to have it towed to their dealers while they review the incident.im so shocked about the complaints on here, this should b put out and not let people go through this. I was thinking what if she has our child with her like she usually does...

I am posting this to complain about my 2000 hyundai sonata. The front sub-frame is completely rusted out. The car is not drivable and is unsafe. I was driving on u.s rt 19 in wv and the front tire became so far out of alignment that the inner tread worn complete through the belt resulting in deflation.

While driving straight down a newly paved access road at approximately 20mph, the control arm broke free of my rotted/rusted out subframe. I have recently had the car in for an alignment, and brake work and no problem was detected with the rusted subframe. The car immediately seized up as the wheel slammed into the wheel housing and the car came to an immediate stop and was immobilized. The car is now in the shop and i am contacting hyundai directly regarding the unlikely fact that many drivers are experiencing this very dangerous problem. I suspect that this problem will be increasing dramatically in the near future as the hyundai sonata's 1999-2001 continue to age. I have noted at least a dozen instances of complaints regarding this issue online and almost all instances appear to be very dangerous.

The car was not steering correctly and was taken to a mechanic to have the alignment fixed.the mechanic said the problem was not the alignment but that the engine cradle was rusted.the car has less than 100,000 miles on it, but because we are not the original owners we are not covered under the warranty.it will cost us around $2000 to have fixed, and we are not sure it will even be able to be fixed.the mechanic said we are lucky that the engine did not fall out, the cradle was so rusted.at this point it is not safe to drive the car and, again we are unsure it can even be fixed.

While my car was on lift for unrelated repair, mechanic spotted severe subframe rot/corrosion and advised me to monitor its advancement.the subframe is rotted through the metal in a size slightly larger than a golf ball at this time (approx. 4 sq. In) on the right front side of the vehicle.

Front passenger side sub frame totally rusted resulting in suspension and steering rack coming apart.

I have a 2000 hyundai sonata with severe subframe rusting which was discovered when car was inspected. I was told that my car is not inspectable.

2000 hyundai sonata, vin: [xxx]mfg date: 06/18/1999sub-frame failure.condition found by tire retailer during installation and alignment. Lower control arm separated from sub-frame.fortunately, condition found before catastrophic failure occurred while driving.less than 1 week prior to discovery, experienced drive axle failure. Right drive axle replaced but technician failed to notice or make me aware for separation of sub-frame. This was the apparent cause of the drive axle failure. The sub-frame separation allowed the drive axle to shift and slip from transmission case.lower connection for control arm separated from sub frame.the condition that occurred is identical to recall on 2001-2004 hyundai sonata models and the recall issued for 1999 and 2000 models in the "salt belt" states.we have experienced heavy winter weather here in va over the past 10 years. Large amounts of salt have been used on our roads. The richmond area has exceeded salt use several times since i have owned this vehicle! but salt isn't a requirement for a condition such as this. The build up of water alone will create this condition! rust occurs any time that water with no drainage combines with steel/iron.my vehicle is currently in dealer service having the sub-frame replaced!had i been notified of this potential condition, i would have taken steps to resolve it before it threatened personal injury to me. I can only thank the staff at merchant's tire for finding it before it failed on the road!information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

Tires started squealing about 9/12; got worse, driving very, very loosely so took to shop on 9/25. Shop said there was 'frame damage." towed to frame shop same day. 9/29 frame shop advised the engine cradle and a-frame were nearly rusted through completely and car was 99% failed. 9/30 received information via web blog regarding numerous occurrences of this specific failure in a narrow range of years/models for mfgr. Called hyundai to open a case to get them to repair, although vehicle is not under warranty, they have repaired numerous others out of warranty for the same issue.

2000 hyundai sonata, subframe rotted out and lower control arm mounts broke off, it was discovered during a pre-alignment inspection after the car started pulling to the right.

Suspension system suddenly collapsed on right side while i was driving in parking lot in fairfax, va.car would not move. Had to be towed to hyundai dealer. Dealer stated that tie rod and engine cradle damaged. I had originally thought that i had hit something during a recent thunderstorm when tree branches fell, but now i know otherwise.have read reports on the internet of numerous incidences like this one.i was lucky i was not on the road.

I have a 2000 sonata with 128,165 miles with a sub-frame rust problem. The right side lower control a-arm is separating from the sub-frame with more than one rust hole evident in the sub-frame.it was discovered by our local alignment shop.took the car to them for an alignment because the car pulls to the right and tires squeal while negotiating right turns. Upon their inspection they pointed out the rust and a-arm separation from the sub-frame as well as pointed out how the wheel actually was sitting more than an inch rearward. After they pointed that out it was very obvious the wheel was not even close to being centered in the wheel well.nothing has been repaired as i am researching options available; specifically to see if hyundai will correct this safety issue.

My right front tire pulled away from the frame. Upon examination i found that the engine cradle had completely rusted apart.it wasn't drivable, had a mechanic friend look at it and he showed me where it was completely rusted out.luckily he was able to fix it himself by taking off the arm and completely redoing it.not sure of details but he welded it back together and fixed it.

On nov.6th 2008. I was driving my 2000 hyundai sonata gls. I was approaching a red light when i heard a loud,"boom". The car stopped and the engine dropped. At first i thought i had blown my tire. I got out of my car and checked the tires, they weren't flat but my right front time laid slightly titled inward. I couldn't move my car. My daughter, grandson and i were shaken. There was rust and a baring lying in the road. They came from my car. I had the car towed to my house. My mechanic said the right axle had broken. After he checked the car,he told me the subframe had rusted through and was cracked badly. He said that's why i heard the boom and the drop. I researched this on the internet and discovered that hyundai has a safety issues with these subframes.this is a life-threatening issue! the potential for grave harm is immense. I can't drive my car now. It will have to towed to a garage. I feel that hyundai is responsible for this. All 3 of us could've been injured if i had been going the speed limit. I want corrective action taken. The public is at risk as well. The subframe is a manufacturers defect.thank you

2 weeks ago i noticed the car pulling to the right as if the alignment was off. As i was driving the car started pulling very hard to the right and could hear the tire squealing. I slowed down to turn into a parking lot and the car dropped slightly and wouldn't move. It was making a grinding sound. I noticed the tire on the passenger side wasn't aligned properly. It was broken. After having the car towed to a auto shop. (cv pros)ed told me that the problem happened because the frame rusted out. He showed me where the rust broke the front suspension bar is what i think he called it. He said that was the reason that the wheel came loose and that a car of only 9 years old should not rust completely through in that amount of time. After checking the web sight "lemon laws" i found where there were many complaint of 1999 through 2002 hyundai sonatas prompted a federal probe because of the same problem.

I own a 2000 hyundai sonata. While driving my car at about 20-30 mph my sub-frame collapsed which caused my front drivers side tire to come completely off.when the subframe collapsed it fell on my axle which damaged. While there was a recall on the subframe my axle was not covered even thought thesubframe collapsing is a direct result of my tire and axle detaching from my car. After voicing my concern hyundai stated to me that they do not coversubsequently damage and that was nothing else to be said or done. This to me is a bunch of crap! if the subframe was not defective i would of never endured these problems with my vehicle. I have not had any major problems with my car until now. I have contacted hyundai's consumer relations and they have done nothing no one is taking responsibility. I will contact my attorney general about this. This is not fair! thank god i was not seriously hurt because i would have been on my own. As they said they do not cover subsequently damages.

When driving to work the wheel start to pull. When i got to work i took a look at the frame there was a 2 inch crack in one side and a 1/4 inch by 20 inch crack in the other side. When i touch it the frame was rotten.

The contact owns a 2000 hyundai sonata.the contact stated that her vehicle rusted through the a frame, which supports the front passenger side wheel.on may 29, 2008, the cv joints failed.while pulling out of a parking lot at 10 mph, the failure recurred.the vin was unknown.the failure mileage was 21,000.

Vehicle began knocking as if something hit it from underneath.also, steering suddenly was out of alignment and front end felt very loose.mechanic discovered a hole in subframe approx. One foot in size due to excessive rust/corrosion on passenger side.as a result motor is loose and vehicle is very out of alignment.mechanic said he has seen this three times on this model only; also said that frame design is such that water collects on top and cannot drain.vehicle is 2000 and only has 66,000 miles.apparently this is happening to this make/model of certain years, yet no tsb's or recalls have been issued.

While slowing down to make a turn on side road, the lower left control arm pulled completely out of the frame. Inspection after found large hole rusted completely through the frame rail. Inspected right side and frame has same type of rusted and missing frame segments. Thankfully this happened at low speed and not on the interstate where outcome could have been very bad. Doing some research i have found that this appears to have been a known problem with this model for several years beginning with 1999 model.

Noticed at last oil change, potential structural failure of front sub frame/engine cradle due to rust out caused by design that allows water to enter and be trapped in sub frame.cars in "snow belt" areas (ohio) are affected by road salt.sub frame has 2.5" rust hole and surrounding area shows fatigue and cracking. Car appears to be one "chuck hole" away from failure.

The contact owns a 2000 hyundai sonata.the contact stated that the front subframe of the vehicle is completely rusted from the inside.the dealer suggested that he call the hyundai dealer.hyundai has been unable to correct the failure.the vin was invalid.the current mileage was 112,000 and the failure mileage was unknown.

The contact owns a 2000 hyundai sonata.the contact stated that the front end of the vehicle pulls hard to the right.he noticed that the wheel was bent at a 45 degree angle.the vehicle was taken to a tire shop and the technician noticed holes in the frame next to the wheel.the tire shop replaced the entire front end of the vehicle.the contact feels that there are other vehicles experiencing this same failure and are unsafe to drive.the vin was unknown.the current and failure mileages were 100,000.

The contact owns a 2000 hyundai sonata.the contact was driving approximately 7 mph on normal road conditions and heard a loud noise outside of the vehicle.suddenly, the front end of the vehicle collapsed with the detachment of the front passenger tire.the subframe exhibited severe rust corrosion. The vehicle was towed to the residence.nhtsa recall campaign id number 09v124000, suspension was related to the failure and the vin was included. The manufacturer will not take the responsibility of the towing and repair cost of damages associated to the consequence of the recall defect. The failure mileage was 140,000.

2000 hyundai sonata. Nhtsa campaign no. 09v124000 hyundai campaign no. 089.*njthe consumer's daughter was driving when the front frame broke causing the body of the vehicle to fall to the pavement, which also caused the front wheel to become disconnected from the transaxle. The vehicle was towed to a collision center. The collision center contacted the dealership to get an estimate for the repair of the vehicle and it was determined that the estimate was roughly equal to the value of the vehicle and therefore, repairs were not recommended. The vehicle was subsequently scrapped. The consumer purchased another vehicle on march 14,2009.on january 12, 2010, the consumer received a recall notice for the vehicle that had previously been deemed as not cost effective to repair.the consumer is seeking reimbursement under the recall noting the vehicle was not repaired because the damage caused by the frame collapse while driving caused more damage to the vehicle than its value. Updated 04/02/10.

2000 hyundai sonata.consumer writes in regards to vehicle rusted rear cross member.the consumer stated in december 2008, the front cross member became rusted. The dealer replaced the front cross member as it was under recall due to rust.the consumer stated the rear cross member frame rusted and about to break apart. When the consumer went to the dealer, he was informed the rear cross member was not under recall. And the cost to replace it, was $3,000.

Consumer states there is vibration between 45 - 50 mph and 55 - 60 mph.dealer stated tires needed balanced.

The contact owns a 2000 hyundai sonata. The contact was driving approximately between 10-12 mph attempting to make a left turn, suddenly the vehicle stopped without warning. The contact inspected the vehicle and observed that the front driver side axle completely separated. Also, the sub-frame exhibited excessive corrosion. The vehicle was towed to an authorized dealer for diagnosis. There was a recall associated with the nhtsa campaign id number 09v124000 (suspension). The vin was not included in the recall. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 193,165.

While driving our 2000 hyundai sonata my husband's sonata came to an screeching halt in which he almost lost complete control of the vehicle. Fortunately, he was able to pull the vehicle over to the side of the road. Once out of the vehicle, it was very apparent that the axle had broken and the drivers front wheel had detached from the vehicle.the vehicle was relocated to the nearest hyundai dealer. It was determined that the damage was fromhyundai's front sub frame corrosion treatment (corrosion class action cc1) group-campaign, number 11-01-038 date-october, 2011. The dealer could not find any record that this recall notice was sent to our home of address.

When driving to work the wheel start to pull. When i got to work i took a look at the frame there was a 2 inch crack in one side and a 1/4 inch by 20 inch crack in the other side. When i touch it the frame was rotten.

Car has bad rust out problems. On the metal frame and suspension parts. Total rust out on rear frame, also the upper control arms. The front cradle frame was repaired previously. Updated 10/20/11

The vehicle started rattling in the steering column and randomly jerking to the right slightly. Over a period of 2 days the jerking to the right frequently (about every 30 seconds or less) made the car almost uncontrollable. The wheel has shifted about 1 inch back on the passenger side.the car is in the shop now and the engine cradle has almost completely rotted out on the passenger side. If it had gone on for any more time, people could have been killed. The fix costs well over $800.00 and i am absolutely outraged to see that this has happened in the same year and model of my vehicle to many other people.

This car was wrecked prior to purchase i was just told this after having reported that the car has pulled to the right since the day i bought it. They did repairs to rear wheels, front end alignment, car continues to pull and hard to keep on road. I don't know what to do about it, i was not informed i purchased a previously wrecked car or i would not have purchased it. Don't really know where to go or what to do but the car is dangerous and difficult to keep on the road. I need suggestions on how to proceed. Just had a 30,000 service and asked why car can't be fixed was told it has been wrecked and frame is bent, it cannot be fixed. Please advise me as to what i should do. Thank you wanda king.

2000 hyundai sonata, subframe rotted out and lower control arm mounts broke off, it was discovered during a pre-alignment inspection after the car started pulling to the right.

Backing out of drive, right front fell. I am told the sub frame is rusted

2000 hyundai sonata engine cradle rusted out,no accident, one owner, nj. Hyundai covers repair for years 2001-2004 for the same exact defect but will not cover the year 2000.

I was pulling out of a gas station into a very busy intersection during rush hour traffic in my 2000 hyundai sonata.i then heard a snap, a grinding noise, and i could no longer accelerate my car.i was almost hit by several cars passing by at high speeds that did not see my car because they were coming around a corner.two men stopped behind me and pushed my car back into the parking lot of the gas station.i called a tow truck, and they looked at my car the next morning.the mechanic said that it was due to my front subframe being completely rusted away.it resulted in almost a complete suspension control arm detachment from the vehicle, and wheel separation.they are currently waiting for the new part to come in, in order to fix the car, but the bill is estimated to be $1,500.

Right front wheel became detached and car skidded to a halt on busy road.the same thing happened 8 weeks ago to the left front wheel. I have since seen on the internet that this is a known issue with this make/model of hyundai.

2000 hyundai sonata, 1200000 miles noticed car was pulling to the right ion snow covered roads, did not drive to work next day on highway, son was taking to repair facility, right front wheel collapsed. Lucky was not on highway, repair facility says front suspension/frame was rusted through.

I have a 2000 hyundai sonata v-6, and during a mechanic's inspection of a worn rear strut he noticed that two, large holes had rusted through the sub frame, engine mount.the mechanic stated that this is a dangerous condition and poses serious threat.

Hi i'm an owner of a 2000 hyundai sonata who resides in the state of iowa. I'm writing in regards to the hyundai recall #089. The lower control arm hasdetached from the sub-frame on my vehicle rendering it undriveable. I haven't received a notification letter about the recall yet. Do i need to actually receive the letter before i can contact a dealer/service center for repairs?

Frame rusted out on right front passenger side. Right front wheel came loose collapsed, breaking trans axle.....repair costs over $2000.00...not...including possible damage to transmission, if i did get framerepaired...many conversations with hyundai, never told there was a recall on this problem with this vehicle... Junked car....found out about recall nbr-78622 after getting rid of the car....hyundai told me, since i no longer own the car....i am out of luck....

Rusted frame, unsafe to drive.

My husband was driving the car and suddenly, he heard a unusual sound coming from passenger side; being very far from home he could not stop but the noise gradually became serious. He pulled over, get off the car and realized that the front tire, passenger side was went behind the normal position and touched the body of the car. Later at the garage the mechanic put the car up and discovered that the engine cradle was cur and it took out the axle. (the car had been towed to get there). He told me that i need a new part that cost $850 and the labor could cost $500. My surprisecame when i went online to search for a cheaper price: first of all i did not find one but instead, i found thousands of complaints from people around the nation, having experienced the same problem with the same car, same model, same year. This defection has caused problem to my family: renting car, towing, we still going through difficulties and we can not afford the repair neither drive the car.

I have a 2000 hyundai sonata that the front right subframe has completely rusted through and there is another huge hole on the other side as well.i know hyundai has issued a recall, but it does not affect my state-tn.i am a single mother and student who has put a lot of money in that car.transmission, axles, timing belt, alternator, starter, both ball joints, both tie rod ends, both wheel bearings, air flow sensor - twice.this problem is one hyundai needs to fix.even for those not in the salt belt states.

I was using the as normal, then the car began to pull to the right.my first thought was that i needed an alignment, but as i was pulling into a store i heard a pop and then the right wheel would not roll.i then contacted a tow truck to have it towed.i got the car a hyundai sonata lifted on jacks and jack stands an noticed rust and corrosion on the subframe and seen that the arms connecting the wheel components to the frame had broken.

I own a 2000 hyundai sonata. While driving my car at about 20-30 mph my sub-frame collapsed which caused my front drivers side tire to come completely off.when the subframe collapsed it fell on my axle which damaged.

I was on my way to work, when i drove over a pot hole and the front end on my car is now resting on my tires due to severe rust in the frame.

While driving approx 30 mph my front right wheel folded back against the fender, bring me to an abrupt stop.once i had the vehicle towed to a local shop we found that the sub frame had rusted through and that the control arm had completely broken off of the sub frame.i had to replace the complete subframe on this 6 year old vehicle with only 77000 miles on it.

Dt: while driving on interstate at about 55 mph suddenly vehicle began to spin out of control in rush hour traffic.the car spun around and struck a guard rail and stopped in traffic. No previous problems with the car.it was towed to pep boys for repairs, serviceman noted the rear driver's side control armbroke in half.no explanation as to why this happened, noted this was rare.car is currently at pep boys for repairs.contacted hyundai , who claimed there were no recalls on that car and they could not help.

There was a grinding noise coming the rear wheel bearing on the driver's side.

Rear crossmember rusted out.passenger rear tire turned out to right and cause me to veer into the right lane, nearly causing an accident.

From 10 mph to stop very bad screaching sound comming from rear of car.dealer say's normal but does it every time you stop just can't be . Just can't.

The contact owns a 2000 hyundai sonata.while driving approximately 45 mph, the engine began to rev excessively high and the vehicle lunged forward unexpectedly.when the accelerator pedal was depressed, the vehicle hesitated and vibrated.in addition, the automatic transmission shifted violently into gear.there was no power response during acceleration, which resulted in the engine stalling intermittently.the warning indicator also illuminated on the instrument panel intermittently.the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer for inspection, but they were unable to duplicate the failures.the mass damper was replaced.the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer on six separate occasionsfor identical failures.the repairs consisted of a complete tune up, replacement of the "output" speed sensor, and the battery was replaced twice; however, the failures continued.the extended warranty on the vehicle expired at 60,000 miles.the vehicle has not been repaired.the failure mileage was 13,559 and current mileage was 82,505.

2000 hyundai sonata with 42,000 miles stalls intermittently at red lights, stop signs, low speed deceleration, and at acceleration.also, during accelleration, the car intermittently "lurches" or "jerks" as if it's going to stall.septemer 1 2003, whiletraveling about 35mph it stalled and had to be towed to the dealership.the power steering won't work when it stalls.on 8/29/03 the vehicle had been taken to the first team auto mall dealership for stalling 8-10 times the previous week.i was told there was nothing wrong with the car. The dealership service department claimed that their diagnostic equipment did not detect any "codes" and the car never stalled during test drives.i was told that i could pick the car up.i did so 8/29/03 anddrove it without incident until 9/ 1, when it stalled again.iknow from researching nhtsathat a recall was done on 2000 hyundai sonata's with 6 cylinder engines for this. (complaint # 880356, recall # 00v259001).my 4 cylinder sonata is doing the same thing.8/29,i spoke with gary baber, the dealership manager, chris clowser, the service dept manager and eric adams, advisor.they all sounded like a broken record: "if the car doesn't do anything while we have it, then there's no way we can do anything to fix it; our diagnostic equipment did not pick up any codes".i wouldn't be surprised if the car starts fine tomorrow and i get a call from the dealership saying the car is fine and they couldn't find anything wrong with it.i am afraid to drive this car; it is unsafe, dangerous and could get someone killed.in addition, it is a practically new car that cannot be taken outside of the city limits due to its unreliability. I was very touched by the complaint i read (#880356) and could relate somewhat to the anguish that consumer endured at the hands of hyundai.their struggle seemed very long and arduous ; i don't know how it ended for them, but this merits investigation because lives are at stake.

There was an erratic operation when the acceleratorpedal is applied.the dealer could not duplicate the problem.the horn malfunctioned, the door(s) closed by themselves, and when the vehicle was driven pass the 40 mph mark, the transmission operated as if were catching up. Scc

When driving to work the wheel start to pull. When i got to work i took a look at the frame there was a 2 inch crack in one side and a 1/4 inch by 20 inch crack in the other side. When i touch it the frame was rotten.

Right front wheel bearing has had to be replace 2 times in under 110k miles! first time at approximately 85k miles and now at 108k. A period of less that 8 months has passed since having the bearing replaced the first time. Now, since its been more than 12k miles since the replacement - i am stuck with the repair bill! shouldnt a wheel bearing last a little longer than 23k miles?!?!

Sub-frame corrosion resulted in a loss of control and vehicle disablement due to wheel collapse.
