My son was driving with 3 other young people in the car at low speed and the car began making a loud knocking noise and stopped in the middle of an overpass. He had to coast backward off the overpass. Thank god no one was behind them or they could have been killed! when i called hyundai customer service they said the 2012 had 'no recalls' but when i reviewed the information on other recalled vehicles different year but same issues. My question is are people going to have to die for something to be done about this? why aren't these 2012 santa fe's being recalled like the others? please make this a mandatory recall so no one is killed before it's too late. Please! mother's love for her child and his friends. Recall this car!! he has not had the chance to bring the car to the dealership yet as he was afraid to drive the car. It was towed to his apartmentbecause it was 9:30pm. He is not familiar with the area because he's in college for his masters degree. What are we supposed to do? help please! electrical lights came onvehicle made a loud knocking noise and stopped in the middle of the roadthe car starts but makes the loud noise
Right rear brake light assembly leaks water shorting out the right rear brake light, this should be a product recall
At 2 times in the last few months the car engine has suddenly stopped while driving slowly on level ground. Lost power steering and power brakes. Car restarted immediately. So far dealership unable to reproduce or help with problem.
While driving the car all the gages started to flicker on and off. The radio started to come on and off and while driving on the highway it just stopped. We replaced the battery and everything.
This is my latest issue with my 2012 santa fe (the previous being a bad transfer case which made it sputter, a bad 4wd coupling assembly which made it clunk while turning & a bad transmission range shaft which caused it to not start occasionally)...it now just turns off while driving. Happened twice in the past few weeks. The first time, 2/5/14, i was turning across 2 lanes of cross traffic around 20 mph and it just turned off and drifted! at first i didn't even realize what happened... Thank goodness i wasn't hit by oncoming traffic! on 2/22/14 it happened again as we were driving down a hill coming to a stop! fortunately the brakes still worked but again it just turned off with no warning... Both times there was sufficient gas in the vehicle and it started right back up. It is going to the shop this week, but i really feel like i got a lemon of a vehicle! i owned 3 other hyundais previously and never any problem and now it is constant!!! i don't want this vehicle as i do not feel safe in it at all but the dealership says that there's no way to get out of this lease!
This is the fourth time since the purchase in april, 2012.the engine just shuts off while driving normally at a low speed.the dealer shop obviously could not find any issues.i cannot understand why this type of highly dangerous problem is not being addressed by nhtsa urgently.i see that there are other complaints of this nature reported.i cannot believe that i have to risk our family lives to prove that there is a serious fault with this vehicle!
After driving to work (approximately 27 minutes at speeds up to 70+) i pulled into my work parking lot like i have down thousands of times before.i proceeded to make a right turn and all power failed on vehicle.the radio display went dead and the car stopped mid turn.it was almost like when your power goes out at home during a storm.i tried shift the car to see if it would want to start back up but it didn't let the key go all the way to the right like you would to normally crank a vehicle.the panel illuminated all icons and lights (similar to a power outage).i tried to start the car a few more times when finally it turned over and i pulled to the nearest parking space.i immediately called the dealership and explain what happened.i had roadside tow it to the dealership (sport durst).after having the vehicle all day, i arrived there slightly before 5pm to discuss what was found.they proceeded to show me a print out of the computer reading where it had no "codes" present.i was then told if they don't have a code, they don't know where to look for the issue.i then explained that i was lucky this time that i was not in traffic or that another car wasn't behind me or that it wasn't at night in an unsafe area but as a car owner why am i expected to roll the dice with my safety??why can't they do what it takes to get to the bottom of the issue.i don't like being at any dealership wasting my evening haggling with them more then they do.therefore i have no reason to make it up.the service manager tried to explain that his hands were tied and that for the warranty to be used to check all potential issues (without any "codes")i would have to be responsible for the bill unless they find something which i feel is unfair when the car is 2 years old with 40,000 miles.i was then told when it happens next time... Record it...
Loud noise, front right, right front axle box. Also 3 warning lights are on including abs,
While driving i smelled electrical smoke, parked car shut off engine, opened hood and found an electrical motor of sorts on fire.
Whether the vehicle is running idle or driving at any speed, the ac is manually turned off within 30 to 60 seconds the ac will turn on by itself. This is an electrical issue that could cause a fire, property damage, a crash, or fatality and should be address by the manufacture.
All three lights abs, esc, and dbc on dash came on same time after replacing drivers side head light bulb. Wheel speed sensor and traction control impacting the driveability.
The contact owns a 2012 hyundai santa fe. The contact stated that while attempting to park, the vehicle stalled with no warning. The contact was able to restart the vehicle. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 51,000.
While driving a/c turned itself on, would not turn off with the off button, had to select head/foot airflow button to get system to turn off.second incident on march 30th a/c would not turn off while vehicle was in park prior to engine shut off, had to select several different settings before a/c would shut off. Third incident today again a/c turned itself on and would not turn off prior to engine shut off - had to again select several different settings to turn off a/c.
Door locks keep locking and unlocking. Has not stop doing this
When a bluetooth device is plugged into the available plug(auxillary plug) in the front dash of the vehicle the radio/cd/phone connections work on and off(mostly off) if lucky you might hear the stereo for a few minutes then it goes off again for days. When unplugged the radio keeps working. My drivers side power window has not worked a few times. The available connection for the cell phone does not work all the time. There is some kind of electrical problem in my vehicle. These ongoing problems have been going on for about 1 1/2 years after i bought the vehicle.
The contact owns a 2012 hyundai santa fe. While driving various speeds, the vehicle would suddenly shut off without warning. The contact was able to restart the engine and the vehicle would resume normal operation. The failure occurred on multiple occasions and the vehicle was taken to the dealer several times. The technician was unable to duplicate the failure and no repairs were performed. The vehicle continued to experience the failure. The manufacturer was notified, but no solution was offered. The failure mileage was 8,000.
On 2/4/15, my 2012 santa fe had an unexpected sudden acceleration, resulting in extensive damage to the vehicle and me, the driver.i had backed into my parking space at work facing a busy road and while re-positioning vehicle, going from reverse to drive, with my foot on the brake, the car propelled forward, going through a 4 foot snow bank and into a stone wall. The driver air bag deployed and hit me direct in center chest. All of this occurred in about 2 seconds and i had my foot down hard on the brake and was attempting to put my left foot on the emergency brake.it was a miracle that i did not hit a pedestrian or other vehicle, which when i later processed this, was the most frightening part..after googling this complaint, i was stunned to see how many people have had similar incidents.
Car has stalled while driving three times, all at low speeds. 3/4 tank of gas, no less. Car also won't start at times unless you move shift lever. Car is under warranty and dealer keeps saying nothing wrong.not starting is very minor. Car stalling in traffic is a major safety issue.
The vehicle stops running in the road without warning and is unable be restarted. Attempts to charge the battery fail. When taken to be evaluated by the brand dealership, they only change the battery and say that it has been fixed. Within 3-4 weeks, it will shut down in the road again. This has occurred four times, and each time, i take to be serviced and they are unable to reproduce the failing issue. I have reached out to corporate, and have quickly dismissed my case. There was a class action lawsuit in 2016 concerning the exact issues i am experiencing with the vehicle. I would think with this type of documented liability, there would have been a recall on the vehicles or a warningnotice dealerships were required to present with the sale. I do not feel comfortable trading the car in as the issue will be transferred to another consumer.
I was at a four way-year-old and stop where i had to yield as i was doing the santa fe cut off and i lost all power steering wheel locked up and i couldn't control vehicle turn the key off and then turn the key back on the truck started 20 minutes later the truck would not start it when you return on the antitheft alarm keeps beeping
My esc, dbc, and abs warning lights all illuminated at the same time this morning. There are many complaints of this happening on numerous hyundai forms.folks have been told to replace hubs, sensors and assorted other pieces.most do not work costing hundreds of dollars.my particular vehicle had the lights come on maybe 6 or 8 months ago. Go off and come on again and off again. I've ignored them not noticing any driving impact.but the car is warning me that it isn't safe to drive the car.this is not a one of or two or three issue. This from another owner;all three light illuminated on my 2011 santa fe so i changed my front right abs speed sensor which was the cause of the lights, but the dash lights are still illuminated. Took it to the dealer and they said there is a short in the abs system wiring harness. What's the cost to fix? $4500.00 really! i think a recall is due for this problem.
When making a right hand turn at slow speed the cars stalls out. Today 7/16 is the 3rd time this has happened. The same event happened twice in the same week about 6 months ago then not again. This sounds too similar to the problems w/ gm cars.
Vehicle stalled as turning into driveway of shopping complex.the steering wheel froze as i was trying to turn left. In the dashboard, no lights on except "malfunction indicator" light was lit.restarted car and drove on, the "malfunction light" got turned off, came home and then called dealer.drove to dealer but they could not diagnose the issue since the light was not on and so no code can be found.car is less than 3 months old and not even 3000 miles on the car.i feel this car is not safe unless hyundai takes care of the problem.not diagnosing and addressing the issue makes me concerned.if car stalls while driving then that is very dangerous as it can cause an accident such as car hitting from behind.i am very much concern with such a problem for car as new as mine.
Vehicle inexplicably lurched ahead when foot on brake, went over a curb, through some grass and into and over a fire hydrant.was unable to stop/control the vehicle,. Vehicle is currently undriveable and at the body shop for repairs.
When driving the vehicle, the vehicle will lurch forward. This could be done as i am accelerating, as i am breaking, or as i am coasting. The dashboard lights will then all come on including the check engine light. The vehicle will start to shake and unable to accelerate. Forcing you to pull off and park the vehicle. When you turn the vehicle off and turn it back on it's like nothing ever happened. The vehicle has also has instances where the rpm gage registers zero, even after you are accelerating. We have had the spark plugs replaced, the fuel system line cleaned out, we started noticing the problem in february is 2020 and the frequency of the problem has only increased. This now happens about every 3-4 days. I have 2 children and i do not feel safe driving in this car with them. I believe that my vehicle should be a part of the recall number 20v746000, or from hyaundai's recall number 198.
Was making left hand turn, car just died, no warning and no lights came on.coasted to stop and car started right up[.another time leaving parking lot car started was runing fine then lost speed, couldn't go over 25 mphtook car to hyundai shop and they ckeck car and they did all the checks and repairs and said car should be ok.ticket #[xxx].also called hyundai company and reported the incident to them,, case #[xxx]information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).
On feb. 2, 2013 after pulling out after a stop light the car ran normally for a very short time and then all power left.it would go only in idle speed.after turning the car off and then restarting it the car would run normally for a while and then do the same thing.a throttle body was replaced.on, jan. 28, 2014 the same thing happened again.another throttle body was installed.the service department at the hyundai dealership nor hyundai could tell us why this throttle body was defective nor could they guarantee that it wouldn't happen again.we could not feel save driving it down an interstate or in heavy traffic and have the car just basically stop with no warning.
Came home 8 pm.son came home shortly after 10 pm.just after midnight my car alarm started going off (car locked and parked in driveway), i got out of bed looked through blinds and saw my car was on fire.i ran to kitchen grabbed fire extinguisher attempted to put out fire and called 911.fire dept determined fire started inside car at wiring area.
While driving at freeway speed, car shut down unexpectedly, and restarted. During interim 20 seconds, attempted to pull vehicle to left shoulder as i was driving in far left lane. I felt "engine drop" or a feeling whereas the car no longer felt powered, cue that the engine had went off. Power steering went manual along with other power assist devices like power steering. On dirt shoulder of freeway attempting with manual brakes and steering to bring vehicle off roadway. Vehicle restarted during maneuver. Still moving at safe speed attempted to merge back onto the freeway, having not yet decelerated enough yet to continue to pull over....clear and dry conditions in north la county. This vehicle however has always had "overly responsive" or "very tight" steering, for lack of better terminology. I leased the vehicle and did not fully realize, until some time passed, what this 'steering characteristic' would mean in the future, in an event requiring accurate and responsive steering combined with the ability to maintain control. The sudden engine power resuming, combined with, what this writer would describe as "tight steering" to begin with, made the vehicle roll. The vehicle, with what felt like a "high center of gravity" always felt like it would roll if one were to have to move quickly to avoid something in the road for example. I did not realize this feature during my test drive.being a lessee i was obligated to keep the vehicle for 3 years.the vehicle rolled several times while crossing 3 lanes of an occupied northbound highway 14. A sudden jolt resulted in a fracture of l1 vertebrae. During roll, jack became undone from where it was factory mounted underneath lift up cover, and had never been removed. Flailing around in the vehicle now was this heavy scissor jack bouncing around in the vehicle compartment with me. I am glad to be alive.
The contact owns a 2012 hyundai santa fe. While attempting to start the vehicle, it caught on fire. The fire department was able to extinguish the fire. There were no injuries. The vehicle was towed to chapman scottsdale hyundai (6601 e mcdowell rd #3, scottsdale, az 85257, (480) 424-3558) where it was diagnosed that the starter caused the fire. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 48,143.
2012 hyundai santa fe. Consumer writes in regard to safety recall due to fires and meltng wires and questions if vehicle falls uder recall.*as
On two separate occasions, my 2012 hyundai santa fe stalled, for no apparent reason, causing loss of steering, wheel control, and brakes.on the first occasion, i was driving through a mall parking lot.while making a left turn and attempting to drive down a row of parking spots, my car stalled and i was unable to turn the steering wheel, brake or guide the vehicle.on the second occasion, i was turning left down the street to my home.again, without warning, the car stalled, various light eliminated on the dash, and i lost complete control of the vehicle.i had no advanced warning and the car otherwise seemed to be running normally.
Started car, noticed the following dash lights were on:absescdownhill braking checked online and found that hyundai recalled 1.7 million vehicles for this problem (defective brake lamp switch) up to 2011. I'm concerned that my 2012 car has the same issue, even though my vin is not included in the recall. These lights stay on no matter if moving or stationary.
Driver was pulling into a parking space when santa fe suddenly surged or lunged forward and to the right causing car to jump over a concrete bumper and into another car parked at a 90-degree angle. After the accident investigation was cleared driver proceeded to the local dealership. Enroute the santa fe would not shift out of low gear. Dealer claimed the events could not be duplicated.
Drove the vehicle to an even with no issues.parked in the event venue garage. Car ran perfectly up to this point.after the event as we where leaving the garage we heard knocking in the engine and had trouble accelerating.we thought we may have gotten a bad batch of gasoline as we filled the car up on our way to the event.we drove the vehicle home with very carefully and had the vehicle towed to the dealer the next monday.we where told the engine needed to be replaced to he tune of $10,000.as stated before the car ran perfectly on our way to our event and the engine was knocking when we started it back up.the car has 104000 miles and has had very minor issues up to this point. The car is still at the dealer so i do not have any documentation as of yet.
During the past 6 months, our vehicle has stalled three times. The most recent incident occurred while we were exiting the freeway. The vehicle just stalled and we almost lost total control of the car ( very scary). The following day, we took the car to the local hyundai dealer and their service department replaced the throttle body and cleaned all the grounds in the engine compartment. We hope this was an isolated incident and their repair solves the problem.
Driving my 2012 hyundai santa fe,on harris blvd. In charlottea multi 6 lane road.tried to speed up to move into the center lane when everything died.motor shut down with traffic zooming by.no warning of any kind. Was able to coast into far right lane, where we sat scared to death someone was going to plow into us. Car would not restart. Called police to sit behind us with blue light, and called tow truck. Had car towed to hyundai dealer, who later reported engine was seized, and would cost $7600 for a used engine. I had received a recallcampaign 198, id 20v746000 notice just days before this mishap, but dealer knew nothing about a recall. Even though it is all over the internet. My wife and i came very close to a disaster that day because of a knownmotor defect for this model and hyundai continues to state remedy not availlable. Guess they're waiting on someone to get killed, which is going to happen.
This is the 6th engine stalling during driving. The engine light, engine oil pressure and charging system lights were on. The dealer could not diagnose or fix it.
The contact owns a 2012 hyundai santa fe. The contact stated that an abnormal humming noise would intermittently emit from the engine upon start-up, without warning. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who was unable to duplicate the failure. The contact then received notification of nhtsa campaign number: 20v746000 (engine) however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The failure mileage was unknown. Vin tool confirms parts not available.
The contact owns a 2012 hyundai santa fe. While driving 55 mph, the vehicle stalled and smoke came from the engine compartment. The contact also mentioned that the engine made an abnormal noise. The vehicle was taken to southtowne hyundai (7665 us hwy 85, riverdale, ga 30274, (770) 471-1000) where the contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 121,000. Consumer stated car is undrivable, engine failure or smoke coming out of the tail pipe. It should be recalled.
Was driving my 2012 santa fe on rt 565 when the car started making a loud banging sound in the engine and the car just died. I was able to roll the car off to the shoulder before causing an accident. I had the car towed to my house where a mechanic looked at it and informed me the engine was shot and told me about this web site so i could see that there are multiple incidents similar to the one i experienced. I purchased this vehicle new from sussex hyundai it currently has 108,000 miles i plan on going in tomorrow and speaking with them. With all the engine complaints and scenarios that could have resulted in accidents listed on this web site you would think that nhtsa or hyundai would implement an engine recall. Hoping the dealer will go to bat for me and contact hyundai america to fix my engine.
My 2012 hyundi santa fe stalled on me as i was approaching a traffic light 3 weeks ago.. Last week my check engine oil light came on my dashboard.i took it to a certified mechanic and he said the problem was a rear crankshaft main bearing seal. He has seen this before regarding hyundai engine problems as well as with the kia brand. I learned that there will be a recall for my car but it will not begin until 1/22/21. My vehicle is not listed with this recall, yet i am having the same problem.i need hyundai to ad my vin number to this recall list.
July 17, 2017 - while travelling from angier, nc to fayetteville, nc; i started hearing a noise coming from my engine, had car towed to aaa car care center. Informed of recall on engine by aaa representative. Called johnson hyundai of cary located in cary, nc to confirm car can go there.july 18, 2017 ' car towed to johnson hyundai of cary located in cary, nc. My issue is that my 2012 santa fe died while i was driving at about 55 miles per hour. I was somehow able to muscle the steering wheel a bit to the right to get out of heavy traffic and get to the side ofthe road. This took place on saturday, may 5th, 2018. I came very close to suffering physical harm and even death. I had the car towed to a mechanic. The charge was $800 and they then told me my engine was blown due to a rod lodging or going through the engine. I also incurred about $50 in uber fees to go back and forth. I know that there is not a recall for the santa fe in 2012 though i also know that hyundai lost a class action suit covering this same issue among others for the 2012 santa fe. I was advised to have the car taken to the dealer for evaluation and then the dealer will contact hyundai. I will have to have the car towed again. This will be the 3rd tow. Each tow cost about $50. I am confident that the issue was a timing chain being loose or malfunctioning causing the destruction of the engine. I would like hyundai to provide me with a replacement engine free of charge and reimburse me for my expenses. I would also like to express that this event has been very upsetting and that it was just good fortune that my wife or 2 daughters were not driving the vehicle at the time.
Began making loud knocking sound. And engine died. Oil came out of the bottom of the car. The car was traveling at approximately 55 miles per hour when it broke down. It was on a busy highway traveling straight.
This has occurred twice(5900 miles and 7000 miles). At a red light, the engine will shut off with no symptoms. It is only when the light turns green and the gas pedal is pressed do you notice the engine has stopped. I see as a dangerous situation. Dealer says with no check engine " on"there is no way to find the problem.
The rod bearing went out in my 2012 hyundai santa fe with no warning.
The vehicle shut itself off when driving locally and on high way. The dealership could not even make a diagnosis. Hyundai headquarters refused to investigate it.
Engine died whenslowing down - coming to a stop or making turnsapproximately 8 times since the time of purchase. First time was when coming down an incline to a stop sign. The next time happened whenmaking a turn around a corner on a residential street.since that first time, service dealer checked for recalls, but there were none., it randomly happens, normally when slowing down from traveling speeds of 45 mi/hr or slower. I have been doing more highway driving and i am starting to get scared that this could be a real safety issue. The next time i brought this up to the dealer, may 2013, the service dealer check computer for codes but didn't find any. Now, when i brought in for maintenance in august 2013, same thing, mentioned it had died 2 times since may 2013, all in similar situations and randomly/computer checked and no codes.. Today, september 7, 2013. It just happened again and this time as i was making a right handturn from a busy street(45 miles/hr when it died- no power steering. Good thing i was able to come to a stop before crossing the median into oncoming trafficand no one was right behind me. I was able to restart the engine and drove very cautiously home! plan on bringing it in and leaving it with the dealer asap.
Driving down the road and a clicking noise started. It got louder as we went along.took it to get diagnosed and was advised that the engine in these vehicles was bad and the only thing we could do was put in a new engine.none of the area used part stores will sell an engine from a 2012 because it is defective so cannot get a used engine and they want over 5k for a new one to fix a problem that is known by the hyundai company to be a problem.
The contact owns a 2012 hyundai santa fe. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle stalled without warning. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the alternator and engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle wasrepaired. The dealer and the manufacturer were made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 70,000. Consumer stated engine was replaced.
The contact owns a 2012 hyundai santa fe. While driving approximately 40 mph, the vehicle shut off without warning. The vehicle was towed to hanlees hilltop hyundai (510-222-8882, located at 3285 auto plaza, richmond, ca 94806) where it was diagnosed that the engine needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and provided case number: 16263442. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 58,000.
Was driving on the highway and heard a loud knocking. Pulled off exit ramp and continued to find a safe place to pull over. After pulling over into a parking lot, the knocking in the engine was much worse. Called for a tow and was towed to a garage. The repair garage stated the motor had spun a main bearing. ( the oil filter was safed). After they did there work i decided to attempt to drive it to a dealer ship. On my there the piston arm broke and went through the side of the block.now the vehicle is no good.
As i was driving vehicle lost all power on a highway very dangerous situation. Again this has happened a second time now with 17000 miles. Dealership said computer update the first time now throttle body i don't think there is an answer very dangerous.
I called huyndai and told them that my santa fe had an engine problem, which is the same problem with all of the ones recalled.they said that that vin did not have a recall. I ended up spending a lot of money fixing the vehicle but i think that it should have been recalled.
The contact owns a 2012 hyundai santa fe. While driving approximately 25 mph, there was a tapping noise occurring from the engine. There were no warning indicators illuminated. The vehicle was driven to the contact's residence and then later taken to ettleson hyundai (6420 joliet rd, countryside, il 60525, phone number: (708) 231-4586) where it was diagnosed that the engine failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer informed the contact that the dealer placed a title brand on the vehicle and would not repair the vehicle due to the expiration of the warranty. The approximate failure mileage was 65,000.
After 104,000 miles,my santa fe 2012 engine died on the road. Heard a knocking sound, and then the gears locked, and i was stuck in the middle of a busy street. The santa fe was towed to the dealership, and told there was a huge hole in the engine. Told i would need a new engine. Price $8,000 for the repair. Went to my local mechanic, and paid $5,000 for a new engine. I need to know where i can file with hyundai, for i heard of a possible recall on 2012 santa fe's in the near future. Any suggestions?
I was stopped in heavy traffic and suddenly the engine raced to maximum and the car lurched forward. Fortunately, i had left enough space back from the vehicle in front of me to avoid an accident.i had to put both feet on the brake and attempted to shut off the engine to stop the engine from racing.
In stop and go traffic, i took my foot off the brake to coast towards the car in front of me. This pattern had been going on for several miles. I was not touching the accelerator and in fact, my foot was not on the brake either, and the car suddenly accelerated full throttle. I had just a couple of seconds to try to avoid hitting the vehicle in front of me. I swerved to the right, towards the shoulder, but i hit the truck in front of me. I was braking the entire time, but it was not enough to stop the sudden unintended acceleration. My left bumper hit his truck on the right hand side of his bumper. My radiator was damaged and leaked all the fluid out onto the highway. The car was not drivable because of the radiator.
We experience a feeling of loss of power and almost stalls while trying to make left or right hand turns from a complete stop.it has happened since we purchased car in 2012 but so intermediately that wewould just try and explain it away (we came up with oh - we are traveling in the mountains, gotbad gas, weather hot, weather cold, maybe i imagined it) but when i almost got hit in the side took it in to dealer again.they have had it 4 times for the same trouble and until the last visit could not duplicate it - dealer in june 2014 kept car many days and then i received a call from service manager who asked if i braked left footed - well yes i do as my husband does.he said they could duplicate the problem only when they left footed braked and their solution was to not do that.i asked some more questions, basically why that would make a difference since we have always done it.he said since the toyota problems the sensors in cars are more sensitive?i told him there are over 80 complaints with the odi for same problem in 2012 santa fe - he said oh that is a different problem - i read all of them - trouble sounds the same to me.we researched this car before buying - nothing in their advertisements, paperwork or on the net said left footed braking will cause your car to stall - we would not have purchased it however, i am not even positive that is the problem.i did also open a complaint with hyundai - they denied a claim of a lemon car and said to just to stop braking left footed.the letter said they drove it 200 miles with no duplication of trouble which is not what the service manager told me - they were able to duplicate it.we now have a car i will not drive because it is dangerous and who would buy it since we would have to disclose this hesitationproblem.just rec. Letter from lawyer asking us to call him - have not yet.

We bought our 2012 santa fe with 68k on 8/29/16 from the hyundai dealer. On saturday (8/19/17) the vehicle completly shut off while driving onto the highway (92k). This experience was terrifying. Once the vehicle came to a complete stop, i put it in park and managed to start the vehicle again (the dash board didn't display any light) and drive it home without any further issues. On sunday 8/20, the vehicle shut off when accelerating from a complete stop, again the vehicle started and we were able to take it home. First thing monday 8/21, i drove the vehicle to the hyundai dealer for troubleshooting. They spent 2 hours and weren't able to to find anything wrong with the vehicle. As i was drive off from the dealer, the vehicle shut offonce again. I went back to the service area and stated that this vehicle was not safe to drive. They proposed that the crankshaft would be a good starting point for the shutting off issues. They kept the vehicle from 8/21 thru 8/24. They wanted to test the vehicle after doing the repairs. I picked up the vehicle on 8/24 at 4:30pm. I was told the vehicle was all set and safe to drive.i was charged $357 for parts and labor. On friday august 25th about 6am, i was driving this vehicle to work, while the car was on the freeway (about 50mph)i heard a loud noise coming from the engine compartment and the vehicle lost power and i pulled over to the side of the freeway. The vehicle was making a lot of noise and did not wanted to move at all. I turned it off and had the vehicle towed back to the dealer once again that morning. I just recieved a phone call today (8/29) that the engine was blown on a perfectly well maintained vehicle. There is no warranty coverage from neither the manufacturer or dealer and we are being ask to pay 5.5k plus taxes for a replacement engine in need.this bad engine should be cover by the dealer or manufacturing.
Intake manifold runner code p200amakes car bog down went to dealer the part is not avail for 8 weeks seems to bea big problem they have several cars at dealership that dont run now mine does notwarranted part but cannot get please help bogs down cant go over 20 mph
First time the incident happened i was driving about 20 mph, and as i made a left turn the car died completely. No control of steering and had to brake very hard to get the car to stop. Put it in park and car started right up again. Luckily no other cars were around me. It happened again about 1 month later after making a left turn again. Took the car to the hyundai service dealer and he replaced the throttle body and cleaned all the grounds. The car ran great for about 6 months and about 3 months ago i was driving on a freeway off ramp going about 25 mph and the car completely died again. I put the car in neutral and turned ignition on and it started right up. One more incident occurred, 2 weeks ago, while slowing to a stop sign the car died again. I even changed to a higher grade gas. But i am still having the same problem. I feel unsafe and insecure driving this vehicle. I don't think hyundai can figure out how to solve this problem with these santa fe's.we will be taking the car back to the hyundai service center again next week.
Same thing thats happened in 90% of the other complaints... Driving, loud knocking sound and engine and power steering died on highway traveling 70mph... You're obviously very aware as i have just sat through and read the complaints all having the same issue with the engine some dying at 58,000 miles which is unheard of. I work at a mechanic shop. This is obviously a manufacturer defect and you refuse to take responsibility and are allowing people to drive around in unsafe cars.. We own 3 hyundais right now. My grandparents own 4 themsleves... We are all going to sell them as fast as we possibly can and will never buy from your thieving dealerships again. Shame as we've been a hyundai family for 30 years but you're all about greed now and failing to take responsibility or reimburse all of these families who are out of vehicles during this pandemic truly shows what you're company is all about. Dont buy from hyundai if you're reading this. They'll recall something with the same issue as yours but claim it's a year behind or ahead of yours and refuse to cover it.. Even with 238 complaints absolutely zero responsibility. Just read the complaints yourself.
I see there is a recall for 2013-2014 for the same engine problems i am having with my 2012. Is anyone else having the same issue? the engine has shut off on me a few times and i had to have it towed. Now i am hearing a tapping and it just seems like the engine is struggling to work. It seems like it doesn't want to go up hill. I don't know what to do. I have to take my car home today if i make it there and park it. I still owe on it until next year. My fiancee who is a disabled veteran and i live on a fixed income. I don't know how i am going to get to work tomorrow.

Nhtsa representative,i am writing to inform the nhtsa that other hyundai's engines outside of hyundai's 2012 and 2013 engine recall are experiencing the same engine failure due to rod knock, which poses a severe safety risk and that hyundai is not helpful in any way when reporting this. Our vehicle which failed on us 40 in the smoky mountains is a 2012 hyundai santa fe vin # #[xxx].on april 10th at 6 pm while traveling on us 40 in the smoky mountains near chandler, north carolina in our 2012 hyundai santa fe towards our home in downers grove, il.,we began to hear a knocking in the engine at any speed greater than 65 mph. Since we were traveling on the highway with no place to safely pull off so we slowed the vehicle to 60mph however the knocking sound became worst and then the car would not go above 55 mph without a terrible loud knocking. This was of course very scary and unsafe. With hazard lights on, we were able to exit us 40 in chandler nc only able to do <30 mph and the vehicle died in entrance of the sunoco gas station in chandler north carolina. During this whole time no check engine or any emergency light warned us of the engine malfunctioning and the safety risk we had encountered with the engine dying. The santa fe was towed to the hyundai dealership of asheville, nc and dropped off at 11pm where it was found to have bad rod knock and needing a new engine.hyundai should be held responsible for their engines that put their customers at risk and 2012 santa fe engine should be on the current engine recall for engine failure due to rod knock. Several mechanics at various shops have stated this is happening regularly to hyundai's engines.please assist us in holding hyundai responsible and modifying the engine recall to correctly encompass our model (2012 santa fe engines) before serious harm comes to someone. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).
2012 hyundai santa fe. Consumer writes in regards to engine malfunction. *asthe consumer stated the engine failed while driving. The consumer were stranded out of state. The manufacturer was contacted but, did not offer any assistance.
The contact owns a 2012 hyundai santa fe. The contact received notification of nhtsa campaign number: 20v746000 (engine) however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The contact experienced a knocking sound and oil leaking from the engine. The vehicle was not repaired. Vin tool confirms parts not available.
While driving on a busy street, i slowly turned a corner and suddenly lost my power steering and brakes and the engine stalled out. I immediately turned off the engine, sat briefly blocking the heavy traffic, after being slightly shaken in the incident, started it up again and proceeded to park and get lunch. After lunch, the car started up ok, i got on the road and shortly after, i noticed the engine light come on so i immediately limped into a nearby car repair place . They determined that there was very heavy sludge clogging the oil filter, even though we had regular maintenance on the vehicle and never had any engine indicators ever come on before. They cleaned out the sludge in the engine and replaced the filter and pump. Now that i am reading about everyone's engine problems with oil not getting into the engine, and after hearing on tv about hyundai refusing to recall my particular car, i am very afraid to continue driving it, since recently i have experienced twice a certain sluggishness/draggingwith a slight knocking feeling in the steering wheel. I noticed this effect twice after having driven the car at speeds of 60-70 mph for a long period of time. Each instance, i slowed to the side of the road, checked to see if i could see anything obvious, which i didn't, started up again onto the highway. The weird dragging and shimmy continued, so i drove at or under 50 mph until it slowly dissipated and went back to what felt normal. I was very disappointed to find out that there is no recall on my hyundai santafe 2012, we bought it second-hand from enterprise car sales. I rely heavily on this vehicle to drive 2 1/2 hours each way at highway speeds to care for my elderly mom's needs in baltimore. I don't want to die on the highway before my mom dies in the nursing home!
I was driving on the interstate at speed when my 2012 santa fe began making a loud rattling sound and losing power. I was able to safely move to the shoulder and stop. The engine then stopped. I was towed to a local garage where a technician inspected the engine. It was found that one cylinder failed and filled up with oil causing a total engine failure. The engine has to be replaced. My vehicle has 101,000 miles on it. Very expensive $6000.00 engine replacement. Car has run wonderful up till this point.
This complaint involves the intermittent total lack of engine power with no throttle response. Please note that the engine does not stall nor do any instrument panel lights come on. For two to four seconds, there is absolute silence and then all of a sudden the engine springs to life and, depending on where you have your foot on the accelerator, the vehicle proceeds or lurches forward. All three incidents were while driving slowly in grocery store parking lots, involving several stop and go incidents through slow moving traffic. The first incident took me by surprise and i thought the engine stalled. I was going to shift to neutral for a restart, but before i could, the engine came back to life and i nearly rear-ended the car in front of me.the second incident was when leaving this same parking lot, except i was entering a divided highway, expecting to merge into 55+mphtraffic, when the loss of engine occurred again. Luckily i avoided being hit by oncoming vehicles and was able to get in to the next opening after the engine again came back to life on it's own. The latest incident took place in a different market parking lot. I was in a line of vehicles stopped at the stop sign at the entrance to the market where pedestrians cross.the truck ahead of me proceeded through and when i started to come up to the stop sign, the engine died, but restarted it self as before. My foot was approximately half way down on the accelerator and when everything engaged, the front tires screeched and startled several people in the cross walk, along with myself. Fortunately i was able to brake quickly and avert a possible disaster. This situation is extremely dangerous and i can foresee the potential for serious injury due to this problem. Internet research shows many more of these same vehicles are prone to this same defect. Thank you.
Engine would intermittently run rough, sputter and choke while driving.
My wife was driving at highway speeds on the beltway around dc when the engine seized and the car shut down.she was able to coast to shoulder where aaa then came and towed her to a shop.shop said it was the engine and we had to take it to a hyundai dealer.dealer said it was a battery issues, replaced the battery and charged us for it.four days later at highway speeds on i-95 north the engine locked up again.the dealer is telling us it is now an engine issue, which was somehow not the problem the first time.the check engine and warning lights did not come on before the failure and all of the fluids are full to standard levels.the dealer is saying they have to replace the engine and hyundai corporate is saying there is nothing they will do for us.vehicle was built only 5 years ago, and only has 72,000 miles on it.because we are the second owner, the original 75,000 mile warranty now only goes to 62,000.she or anybody else around her could have been killed.
While driving down the highway wednesday afternoon i heard a loud bang and i assumed that a rock had hit the side of my car. When i got home i checked but did not see any dents or scratches on that side. That evening i drove my car again on the highway and it stalled out while i was driving. I pulled over to the break down lane and turned it off. After about a minute i turned it back on and it started up fine and drove just fine the rest of the night and the next day. On friday when i started driving down the road it made a very loud noise, which was a constant loud noise. I turned around and brought it home and called my mechanic. He checked the car and said that the engine needed to be replaced, which would cost more than what the car is currently worth. The car has less than 130,000 miles on it. I bring it in every 3 months for oil changes and make sure to do all of the recommended repairs.
Driving on the highway heard abnormal knocking coming from engine. Engine started to over heat pulled over immediately. Took it to the mechanic, he said sounds like a bearing going out. Not driveable
Driving down the tollway at 75 mph the engine made a knocking sound and then completely shut down.my husband was able to coast if off the tollway . It was towed to the dealership where they came to the conclusion that the engine blew and recommended getting a new engine.however, with it being just at 102k miles its right outside of warranty.the dealership is telling me corporate wont cover it but i have filed a formal complaint with hyundai corporate and they are in the process of reviewing the claim.after reading all of the other horror stories, i believe they will come back with some excuse.this has got to stop.they said it would be 3-5k just for a new engine alone... This is outrageous.
Just got out of a shopping center and onto mira mesa blvd, san diego.car stalled!i was going @ 30 miles/hour or so.total miles on the car when this happened were 5177 miles. When it stalls, it behaves as if key is moved to on position but car has not been started.this is the 4th time car has stalled since i bought new in august (yes, in 5 months and within @ 5,000 miles).prior two times were just a before christmas on 12/23/2012 (on the same day, @ 1 minute apart).at this time i was going slow speed @ 25 miles/hour on a windy down hill road.fortunately, there were no fast moving cars behind me in all 4 cases. I am afraid that someone may hit me from behind when car stalls like this.car has been to dealer twice for the same issue.they seems to have no clue.last time i went, just after christmas, that changed throttle body.i was hopping that it will fix the issue but i am not that lucky as it came back in just 3 weeks!i have opened a case with hyundai already right after the first incident, will have to follow up with them again.
I went grocery shopping on wed april 21,2021 came out tried starting my 2012 hyundaisanta fe and it wouldn't start i proceeded to try again and it started making this high pitched noise ,peaked out really loud a puff of smoke came out from underneath my hood and the car was completely dead. I had it towed to my mechanic where he replaced the starter thinking that was theproblem which it wasn't he informed me the engine was seized up . I then had the santa fe towed to the hyundai dealership where it was purchasednew from theoriginal owner all service from day one has been done at this hyundai dealership we bought this car knowing the service records and history of car we also knew it came with a 10 year 100000 mile drive train warranty.motor failed at 96128, would of been covered under manufactures drive train warranty if i was original owner i was told. After doing research we have discovered this is a common problem with the hyundaisanta fe motors locking up. Service writer advised us to contact hyundai directly which i did my case #18222696was told someone would call me within 3-5 business days which i haven't heard from anyone.
The engine stalled while driving. I was driving at a low speed and making a right-hand turn, and the engine shut off. The check engine light illuminated. I lost power steering and wound up on the opposite side of the road; fortunately, there was no oncoming traffic or it could have been an even more dangerous situation. I was able to restart the car and continue driving. The dealership did not see a diagnostic code recorded. They were also not able to recreate the problem. No repairs were made. This incident happened again at approximately 9,000 miles, and most recently at 24,184 miles. In all cases the scenario is similar: driving at a low speed, either turning or on a curvy road. The vehicle has restarted without incident, but the complete loss of power steering and braking makes this an incredibly dangerous defect. The dealership was unable to find a diagnostic code for the most recent incident.
It starting slowing down while driving and a really loud noise and then shut down.. Had to have it towed to auto lenders thatwhere i purchase the truck and they said the engine was done... Second opinion and the mechanic indicated the same "needs a new engine"
The contact owns a 2012 hyundai santa fe. The contact received nhtsa campaign number: 20v746000 (engine). The contact stated while starting the vehicle there was an abnormal odor of smoke. The detected local dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 144,000. Vin tools confirms parts not available.
2012 hyundai santa fe purchased at 89,000 miles from the dealer with clean carfac. Maintained with oil changes regularly, every 2-3k miles. No issues. Went to start the car 90 days after purchasing it and the engine failed, rumbled loudly and shut off. Engine lights came on. Mechanic told me it was tension timing chain & replaced it for $2,000. 2 months later (now) the same thing is happening, only now it's a loud knocking noise and blue indigo smoke coming out of the exhaust. I have not even driven this car for 6 months and i do not drive very often (live and work in the city). This same engine is in the 2013-2014 which have officially been recalled, so we all need to place a lawsuit on hyundai for the 2012 santa fe! my mechanic told me this engine is defective and the manufacturer did not seal the oil pan properly so the oil leaks out constantly while the car is idle. I was told it needs a new engine, and am currently fighting with hyundai corporate to get them to replace it free of charge! can anyone help!
While traveling home from vacation on i75s we heard a strange rattling sound and immediately lost all power. Had to coast to the left which put us in a very dangerous situation. Highway patrol had to stop traffic and we were able to get car to the right side. Barely.was towed to the nearest chevy dealership because no one else was open. Was told i needed a new engine.i've owned this car for 2 years with no warning of any problems.there are no recalls.i'm having the car towed to my home in ms. Car has 90,000 miles. There are no recalls but there should be! this problem could have caused a serious accident !
All events occurred while vehicle was stationary.began to have a intermittent no start condition around the third week of january 2016. Theta 2.4 engine #165130 would not turn over. A jump start with 2nd vehicle battery supply and jumper cables were needed for engine to run.tested thebattery voltage output on santa fe with engine cold 12.65 and engine running 13.96 to 14.02 range all starting and charging components were operating in normal conditions and no check engine or battery indicators illuminating. No signs of engine malfunction was evident. On 01/29/2016 after having two more no starts went ahead and replaced the battery with brand new one. Engine would crank but not start.tested voltage on battery, alternator, starter, ignition and fuel pump relays.had spark on all coils and fuel. Air filter was new. Felt confident there was no need to check compression as there were no mechanical signs present. At certain times some engine components due wear out so i had a mechanic inspect the engine and asked him to replace the crankshaft sensor. Engine would not turnover after several attempts and he could not determine the cause. On 01/30/2016 connected my obd2 and got a total of 11 codes, p0445,261,267,270,264,448. Five out of first eleven were displayed twice except p0448.i had the car towed to a hyundai authorized service dept on 02/02/2016 the service adviser at frank hyundai advised me his mechanic performed a compression and leak down test and informed me engine had low compression in 3 out of 4 cylinders with active codes p0223 p0445 and p2106.one cylinders was said to be blowing air up towards valve cover.i was told they suspected piston rings or cylinder head was cause of engine failure.had car towed home. After finding blown fuse i was able to start car but shut it down immediately from loud noise coming from valve train rotating assembly.unknown symptoms.
I had just merged onto the interstate i-90 at rush hour, at about 55-60 mph when the steering froze and the car totally stopped.fortunately i was able to get the car into the breakdown lane and get out of traffic. The car was towed to the dealer where i purchased it & maintained it regularly. Their mechanics checked it out.i was told the problem was the bearing material went first, causing a seized crankshaft.need a new engine at 105,000 miles !!! dealer cost of new engine was stated at $8000.they also gave me the alternative of buying a used engine for $6000 but only with a 3 yr warranty. At my normal usage, assuming i continue to drive about 17,500 mi/year, it will cost me $8000 plus regular maintenance to get another 52,500 miles out of this car. This is a totally unacceptable issue that the manufacturer is not handling in a pro-active manner. At least hyundai could extend the warranty for my car to allow this fix to be done at no cost to me. They obviously kept the scope of their recall too narrow because pages and pages of complaints exist on nhtsa website are describing the same problem that i had. This is a dangerous problem that needs to be addressed.
The engine stalls while driving on the free way and the check engine light comes on.just like the one that's being recalled.
The contact owns a 2012 hyundai santa fe. The contact stated his son was driving 55 mph when he heard a knocking sound coming from the vehicle. The driver pulled the vehicle over to the side of the roadway and had the vehicle towed to findlay hyundai st. George (1405 south, sunland dr, st. George, ut 84790, (435) 688-7272) to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the connecting rod failure caused the engine to be damaged. The contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 106,000.

I was simply turning off a city street on hh hwy only got up to 20 to 25 when ticking began. (i have video so you can hear noise but wouldntlet me send)
My car started to randomly stall without any notice or check engine light. I brought my vehicle to a mechanic and was told all i needed was an oil change. Then one day my car stalled on the highway. The police were notified by another vehicle because they thought my car was on fire. I cannot believe they havent recalled this engine yet. I could have been killed. I sat on the highway in the police car until the tow truck arrived because my car stalled in a bad location and was smoking. My car was towed to the nearest hyundai dealership and is now going through diagnostic testing. Hyundai manufacturer was directly engaged and they are asking for photos of the engine. How about keeping people safe hyundai and recall this engine as well and pay for the repairs as the next person this happens to may not make it out of their car to tell their story.... Terrible horrifying incident.
While stopped at a red light on an incline, vehicle did not move when gas pedal was pressed.it felt like the car had stalled out but the rpm's were still between 1 and 2.when i pressed harder on the gas the car lurched forward.this has happened several times and is now happening more often, not always on an incline or when temperature or engine is cold.taking to dealer for repair but told if they can't duplicate they can't do anything about it.i have only owned this car 4 months and want to get rid of it because i'm afraid to drive it now. Not sure if its a problem with the transmission or fuel system but something is definitely not right.hope it happens for the dealer so it can be fixed.
My vehicle suddenly shut off while turning down a city street at slow speed. No safety/warning lights came on. I cranked it back up and it ran fine for a few weeks.it seems to run fine on open highway but at a stop or slower speed it will cut off leaving me in danger of a collision at busy intersections. With no warning again it did the same thing at a red light. I cannot drive my vehicle now because of the safety hazard. I had my truck towed to a garage-then was advised that a hyundai dealership would need to fix it so i had the expense of two towings. The hyundai dealership has now informed me that the computer check shows a timing tooth may be off and that with the expense in will incur i am better letting them put an entire new motor in. I am so upset this is happening due it being my only means of transportation.
The contact called on behalf of her mother who owns a 2012 hyundai santa fe. While driving 55 mph, an abnormal noise was detected from the vehicle and the engine stalled. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic where the contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer and dealer were not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 96,000.
My family has a 2012 hyundai santa fe.we started experiencing problems with the vehicle stalling while driving in 2013.the car stalled multiple times on city streets and once on the highway.when the car stalls, the driver loses power steering and brakes.it is a very dangerous situation.after the third time the car stalled we took it in for service in april of 2013 to the local hyundai dealership.the technician ran a complete diagnostic and said he could not find anything wrong with the vehicle.we refused to take the car at that time and insisted on more testing.they did find a problem.they replaced/repaired the etc-actuator and gasket-throttle body.the car ran fine until last week when it started the same problems again.it has stalled four times in the last week. The latest stall happened today when my girlfriend was driving the car at around 30 mph.it also stalled last night when i was driving it home at about 25 mph.i was able to get to the side of the road and put the car in park.i turned the key and it started right up again.when it stalled on me, i lost power steering and power brakes. The time of the incident was 9:48pm and the mileage on the car was 72,917.it was very scary.we are taking car to hyundai dealership today for repairs.we do not want to drive this car anymore.it is unsafe and a hazard.
The contact owns a 2012 hyundai santa fe. The contact stated that while driving 30 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. The contact was able to restart the vehicle after the failure. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 5,000 and the current mileage was 6,520.updated 09/02/14*lj
While driving up hill yesterday my car just died.the engine light went on and the car stopped.i am now learning that hyundai engines have a default.they do not let enough oil in the engine regardless of oil levels and thus as you drive, the engine is disintegrating.the engines usually die a little after 100000 miles.my car has approximately 116000 miles.this is dangerous.lucky this happened on a small back road so no one got hurt, but what if this happens on a major hwy? accidents/death even.we own another 2012 sante fe and i am scared to drive it now.
The contact owns a 2012 hyundai santa fe. The contact stated that while driving 55 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning and could not be restarted. Due to the failure, the contact had the vehicle towed to an independent mechanic who informed him that the engine had thrown a rod. The mechanic immediately linked the failure to nhtsa campaign number: 20v746000 (engine). The contact called lakeland hyundai (1500 w. Memorial blvd, lakeland, fl 33815) and holler hyundai (1150 orlando ave, winter park, fl 32789) and was informed that the vin was not under recall. The contact was then referred to the manufacturer who also informed him that the vehicle was not under recall. The contact was then referred to nhtsa for assistance. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 116,125.*dt
Without any warning, the engine shut off with the gear in d - driving on a flat road normally.this also happened around 3500 miles around july 20, 2012.
The contact owns a 2012 hyundai santa fe. The contact stated that the vehicle stalled without warning while sitting at a traffic stop. The failure was experienced several times.the vehicle was taken to the dealer to have a diagnostic performed but the dealer was unable to generate a failure code. The dealer also test drove the vehicle but was unable to duplicate the failure. The dealer reset the electronic control module as a precaution. The failure was not corrected however, and the vehicle continued to stall when stopped.the failure mileage was 2,766 and the approximate failure mileage was 3,000.
Driving down the street and without warning the car just died.i didn't know what was going on as no lights appeared but the steering was very difficult and i realized the car just stopped running for no reason.it was very alarming since i was in the middle of the road driving.not stopped or turning.luckily there were no cars behind me but had i been on a busier road or going at a higher speed, it could have been extremely dangerous and even more so for an inexperienced driver.i am very concerned about the safety of this car now.
The contact owns a 2012 hyundai santa fe. The contact received notification of nhtsa campaign number: 20v746000 (engine) however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The contact stated while driving 30 mph, the vehicle stalled. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed that a rod had gone through the engine block and the engine needed to be replaced. The contact notified the manufacturer of the failure and was informed to take the vehicle to a hyundai dealer as the vehicle was impacted by the recall. The contact contacted conicelli hyundai (1208 ridge pike, conshohocken, pa 19428) and was informed that the remedy was not yet available. The failure mileage was 90,000.
I was driving in colorado on i-70 and as i slowed down to exit, heard a clicking sound.the sound got louder/quicker when i accelerated.i pulled over and checked but saw nothing.i checked the oil and had a service guy at a superstore check it too.he saw no metal parts in the oil.no indicator lights were on. It was a sunday and nothing was open. I tried to drive farther and was going 35 miles per hour up a hill behind a truck but as soon as i tried to accelerate to pass, i heard a pop.the engine light and the oil light came up.i pulled over and tried to at least accelerate to the freeway exit, but had an immediate loss of power.i had to have the car towed twice - once to the closest town and then back to denver to the dealership (which was again closed on sunday).the tow truck driver told me there was oil everywhere under the engine.the dealership looked at it a week later and said there was a hole in the side of the engine block.
The car turns off while driving. It has happened randomly. The engine dies. I almost got hit by a big rig cause my car stalled while driving on the freeway.
Very recently, the car has been stalling out with no warning, no odd sounds and no obvious reason as to why. I took the car to a well-known, trusted mechanic who was unable to find the cause, as the vehicle presented 0 fault codes.i was informed that i would have to drop the car off for a couple of days so that they could diagnose what the issue could be, and hopefully catch it happening. After doing so, i was then informed that it showed 0 signs of stalling while in their possession. In order to possibly find the issue, the car would have to be kept for more than just a couple of days, which would affect my job and the bill would most definitely be more than i could afford.the symptoms include the following...engine stalls while in idle at a stoplight.engine stalls while stopping at stop signs.engine stalls while driving in low speeds.engine has a rough idle in morning and stalls within first mile of driving the vehicle.this has all been occuring for the past month.every mechanic i speak to for help agrees it's a mystery issue and that the vehicle would have to be kept for a period of time for diagnostic measures. I'm not sure where else to turn.i use my vehicle daily for work and have never experienced anything like this before.not only is it a very unsafe and dangerous issue, it literally scares the crap out of me, because when it happens, it's sudden with no warning. Tired of fearing for my life if stalled outin heavy traffic. It usually starts right back up, but at times it takes a minute or a few tries at times.any assistance in this matter would be greatly appreciated. Dg
We have had 3 separate instances when our suv stalled and the engine shut down when proceeding to drive once a stop signal changed.the most recent occurred yesterday when we made a right turn onto us 101 from steiner street in sf.the power steering went out, the brakes failed and the engine shut down.the car restarted once i got it back into park. It was a harrowing experience on this busy street
Bought the car with 139,000 miles on it. Had a clean car vin report. Drove it for 3 months with no issues. Slowed down on a dangerous 2 lane highway for a car turning left in front of me and suddenly couldn't accelerate and the engine lost all power, making a loud grinding noise. I was stuck with no steering, no power and no hazard lights half way off of the highway. Luckily a truck pulled in behind me for safety and 2 passengers helped me get it off the highway.had it towed to the auto shop to fund the engine needed to be completely replaced. The dealership was kind enough to eat the costs of labor, but we are out another $3,500 for an engine replacement on a car we've only had for 3 months. Further research shows multiple dangerous situations of engine failures on this specific model yet no recall has occurred. Will it take death's for hyundai to take responsibility for knowingly keeping cars on the road where engines can completely fail with zero warning?
Riding on a 6 lane very busy highway when engine on my 2012 hyundai santa fe just quit. Only very lucky we were able to move over to the right lane. Cars were flying past, and right lane traffic had to stop to keep from rear ending us. I called police dept to send a car with blue light to help keep us from being hit. Also called tow truck to move us to dealership. Received a letter from hyundai corp. Stating my car was in the recall for bearing damage. Informed the hyundai dealership, modern hyundai of concord ,n.c.of receiving this letter. That was (10 )weeks ago. Still waiting on modern hyundai to service my car. They keep telling me the corp officeis requesting more photos of the damage. Been hearing that same line for over 3 weeks now. Just keep giving us the runaround. Theyshould have enough pictures to make a movie by now.this has been the most scariest situation, and the most disparagingi have ever dealt with.
Engine light comes on.has happened three consecutive days.within initial 10-minutes of driving, car bucked/surged and engine light appears.car would not accelerate in one instance.pressing gas pedal had no effect.could only coast to dealership maintaining whatever speed i had by having the car in drive and idling.very unsafe to be unable to accelerate.hyundai dealer 'fixed' problem by doing a software update.in no case would it seem plausible that the software is coded to disable the acceleration.the software update did not make the issue go away.following day, the car bucked/surged again and the light came on.car now left at dealership again for the third time.
My daughter was traveling on thefreeway i-80 and 60 miles outside of laramie wyoming, the engine made clunking noises the the car slowed down and she pulled over to side of i 80 this was 18 feb 2021. She was towed to laramie tire and auto repair. They let us know they found metal shaving in the oil and oil filter and thought it was the lower engine berring that failed. And the engine would need to replaced or rebuilt at a cost of $5500 to $45000. We had the oil changed before she left on the trip to ca. After i complained to hyundai by email then they sent me a notice of safety recall for her car. Which i got on the 3 april 2021. We owned the car since may of 2019 and did not get this notice in the 2 years we owned it. Now after a totalloss of the car we paid 7,000.00 in may 2019, she traded it in, they would only give her $65.00trade in to get another used car. If we would have had this safety recall before the engine failed all thiscould have been avoided. I am very disapointed in hyundai and their notification of the safety recall.
Driving on interstate highway the engine had a failure and a rod went through the engine block and the oil dump started a fire.
The contact owns a 2012 hyundai santa fe. The contact received notification of nhtsa campaign number: 20v746000 (engine) however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. Neither the dealer nor the manufacturer were contacted. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The contact had not experienced a failure. Vin tool confirms parts not available.
Was driving on the highway and heard a rattling/clunking, my rpm's shot up and i couldn't accelerate past 60. The check engine light came on and then shut off briefly. Then all of the lights on my dashboard came on and i pulled over but had no power steering. Once i pulled over the car began to smoke so i turned it off. I then heard a loud pop and saw a thick black smoke coming from the hood and within 30 seconds the front of my car was in flames. It is believed to be an issue with the engine and there is the start of a class action law suit on this engine.
Car had 79000 miles. When driving, motor started making ticking sound. I stopped the car and checked the oil. It was full. 2 miles later, the engine started knocking, no warning lights of any kind came on on the dash. Before i could park it off the road, a rod went through the block. The broke rod had a number 4 stamped on it.
Was driving on i 5 in california when engine began to knock loudly. Pulled over and had the car towed to the dealer. Dealer could not visually find any reason for engine malfunction & said hyundai should cover it due to it only had 63,000 miles. They submitted my claim and it was denied. I tried to appeal but was told their decision was finale. The dealership was astonished as was i. I was told at the dealer it was an oil issue and was told it was not a lack of oil but clearly a manufacturer defect, and yet hyundai refused to help.
Thankfully i was not on the highway... Was traveling about 40mph and the check engine light came on.so i did what appears everyone else has done - pulled over shut the car off for a few minutes was able to restart the car with power to the accelerator (light was still on).made it to work - called the dealership to bring the car in that afternoon.of course the light goes off on my way there.the dealer runs diagnostics to tell me that the computer just needed an update... Wth???an update causes me the ability to accelerate???
Without any warning, the engine shut off while driving normally.this is the third time since the purchase, and please advise any way to take action on this dangerous issue.i just know that the dealer will just say that they will look into it, and they will not be able to fix this.do i have to go through all the visits to the dealer and build a case for a lemon?where can i get help?
This vehicle has a problem with stalling and hesitation whencoming out of turns and at speeds between 60-80 mph. I have mention this to the dealer several times and they continue to say they cannot find anything wrong. Because there is never any lights on and no codes.this is a very bad problem someone is going to get hurt from this or die from this.but no one will know because the symptom will not show up as a code on the system, if they die the story cannot be told.please look into this, i bet if you check with owners of this vehicle you will find the same problem not only the same yr of mine but newer ones. This problem has been happening ever since i have owned this vehicle. I have now a 109,000 miles on it now. On 01/28/2018 it done it several times on the highway.
We were traveling on i-70 west accelerating uphill when we heard a sound from the engine. We stopped to check and then continued our travel when a part came off the engine. We were on the east side of the eisenhower tunnel and had to be towed to our destination in frisco. The engine is blown and will be costly to replace. We have 149,465 miles on the engine. Ths is awd.10
Mileage around 82,000 miles | always had routine, on time, maintenance | no engine light on (or any others) | on a trip driving down the highway going around 65mph with cruise control set (2 adults and 1 child in the car, not towing anything), our suv started making a strange noise when accelerating, then progressed to a consistent noise whether accelerating or not. We decided we needed to stop in the next town (about 20 miles away) to take a look, but before we could reach the next town the car without warning shut down, started smoking, and pieces of the car fell from below the car. My husband raised the hood and noticed the engine was on fire, and quickly put it out. We had the car towed to a hyundai dealership and just by raising the hood the mechanic knew the engine exploded, and informed us it would be around $6500 for a used engine. From the time the noise first started until the engine blew up we drove 12 miles. We have tried contacting hyundai to notify them of the issue, after waiting on hold for 30+minutes all they can say is there is nothing they can do since we are out of warranty, when we ask to speak to a manager one is never there and they promise that will have the manager call us back, but we have not received a phone call. After researching this issue, it seems we are not the only ones having issues with the engine. My husband used to sell hyundai's and knows for a fact that the santa fe and sonata's have the same engine - the 2011-12 sonata engine had a recall, why didn't the santa fe have a recall? the santa fe is my second hyundai to own, i will not buy another due to the issues with my santa fe and lack of customer service. Side note, why would i spend $6500 on another engine, when there seems to be an exploding pattern.
A connecting rod bearings in the engine wore out prematurely and damaged the engine while driving with my family. The car was not responding almost causing a catastrophe, i experienced mental distress and triggered my ptsd. When taken to the mechanic for inspection the damage showed a connecting rod cause a hole in the engine spilling and burning oil. There was no sound or warning lights until after the car's engine was damaged by this manufacturer fail. I did my research and i found others with the same engine issue.what's hyundai next step in this case?
When driving at approximately 40 mph, the engine seized causing the steering wheel to lock and the brakes became extremely difficult to push in.the vehicle was entering a turn on lake shore drive in chicago il.the vehicle had to be towed off the road and will not start.
While driving 45 mph there was a loud knocking sound coming from the engine. Additionally, the vehicle decelerated without warning. The vehicle was towed to two independent mechanics who stated that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was towed to coconut creek hyundai 4960 north, fl-7, coconut creek, fl 33073 (888) 441-7737 where it was diagnosed that metal shaving were in the engine and that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired the manufacturer was contacted and informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 90,000.
My santa fe has only 78,000 miles on it and has been maintained very well. Despite this, during our evacuation for hurricane irma, the engine completely locked up on the highway, driving about 70 mph with cruise control. The vehicle was not under strain, we were not towing anythingand only had 2 persons in the car. We were left having to get the vehicle towed to a repair shop where i was informed the the theta ii 2.4l engine that was in my vehicle was on recall. However the recall only covered this engine in the hyundai sonata models and for some reason was not covered in the santa fe. I can't imagine why an identical engine would be recalled for this problem in one model vehicle but not in another. I had even had the oil changed 3 weeks prior, which the mechanic confirmed that everything appeared fully functional and in good working order with the oil, transmission and cooling system.
The contact owns a 2012 hyundai santa fe. The contact stated that while driving on a highway and she heard a rattling sound at 60 mph. The entire dashboard lights illuminated and the engine seized. The contact was able brake the vehicle and cruise over to the shoulder off the highway. The contact had the vehicle towed to an independent mechanic. The mechanic found the engine to be internally damaged causing a slow to no crank. The serpentine belt was removed and the mechanic attempted to rotate the crank by hand but got the same result. The mechanic recommended that the engine be replaced.the dealer autonation hyundai 104 (759 west 104th avenue, northglenn, co 80234, (303) 578-6114) was called and attempted to schedule an appointment to have the vehicle diagnosed. The manufacturer was informed by the dealer to help with the contact's repairs under their certified preowned warranty. The manufacturer determined that there was a defect and provided two options either a new engine or a buyback offer. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 83,000.
I own a 2012 santa fe., my engine seized out of blue on a well maintained vehicle. The 2012 kia sorento engine was recalled (which is the same engine as mine), and 2013 & 2014 santa fe engines recalled. Can you please tell me why the 2012 santa fe with same engine as the sorento and the 2013 santa fe, has not been recalled. I have found multiple reports of same problem on the internet and on this site!
Car engine completely died while on highway without any warnings i am chocked my car has been perfect until now my car barely passed 100,000 and both warranties expired also body pant is chipping off.
I was driving on a city street, heard a loud noise and then the engine completely shut off.i have done research and found similar issues in other hyundai vehicles with the same engine which is why this is a huge safety concern
My vehicle is a 2012 hyundai santa fe with 131,000 miles.i was driving on the highway traveling about 65 mph and lost power steering, power breaks, and speed control.my car began to slow and would not accelerate and was difficult to steer.fortunately i had enough power/speed still to get over into the breakdown lane.i was able to use my directionals and hazard lights once on the side of the road.i shut off the car and attempted to start it again several times without success.the check engine light was on, as was the oil light and battery light.there was no discernible warning that would have indicated an impending engine failure.i had already driven 75 miles of my trip and it simply stopped running. In the middle of the highway!the cause of the problem is unknown to me and currently unknown to my mechanic. I had to have my car towed 50 miles to the mechanic.getting it to a dealer would have been even father.
My car does not ever stop when itry to stop. I can be stopped on anincline andthe car will roll out in the main road and will not go in oncoming traffic. Then all at once it will take off at a fast speed andi have almost been hit many times by oncoming traffic. I have had my car inthe dealer several timesand they say they cant find the problem with the car. My car has 28,000 miles on it now, this problem has been occurring since the car was new. The problem is happening more often now. It is very dangerous for my family to drive.i need your help.[xxx]information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).
Clicking from engine but does not start crankshaft failed/broken upper oil pan broken due to crankshaft failure while driving there was a clicking sound then it froze up the steering wheel locked and had to pull over on side of road. Tried to restart the radio came on but the engine never started up
I was on a freeway on ramp that goes downhill and involves a curve to the right. About halfway down the on ramp my engine stalled. I had to turn my wheel as far right as i could to avoid going off embankment and could not accelerate to try to move away from the edge of the embankment or attain a safe speed to merge onto freeway. My oil light and malfunction light both came on. I was able to get to the side of the road and turn car off. When i turned it back on all indicator lights were off and car drove fine. I was informed by dealership there has been a recent software fix for this that has to do with the throttle.
The contact owns a 2012 hyundai santa fe. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, there was a loud knocking and screeching noise coming from the engine and the vehicle struggled to accelerate and then stalled. The vehicle was taken to the dealer. The dealer and the manufacturer's insurance agent diagnosed that metal shavings from the ball bearings had gotten into the engine, causing engine failure. The vehicle was not repaired and remained at the dealer waiting for a complete engine tear down to verify the failure. The contact related the failure to nhtsa campaign number: 20v746000 (engine). The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 64,268.
While driving the engine would decelerator then cut out.i can be on the highway going speed limits of 70 or on a side street going 30 or under.it even happened when i pulled out of my drive way and drove down my street (4 houses down) and got to my cul-de-sac and all power shut down.neighbor had to stop to avoid hitting me because i was rolling and could not stop.all power to steering wheel and brakes would be non operational.i have to manually pull the wheel to one side to avoid traffic, causing an accident, or from being hit by head on traffic.the first occurrence was in february of 2017 and the most recent was january 18th on my way home from work.it has happened to us over a dozen times and found blogs that state that hyundai denies that this is happening.
I was driving down the highway when the car cut off.after coasting to a stop, the engine wouldn't restart. Towed it to the hyundai dealership in spartanburg, sc. They charged me $110 for diagnostics after which they told me it was my battery.i was driving home (nc) when it started making a horrible noise.i drove it to the closest hyundai dealership where they told me the motor was blown.

While driving straight at highway speed, the engine warning light came on and within 30 seconds the engine completely shut down. The vehicle lost all power and control so abruptly that i was not able to get it out of the traffic lane. After having it towed, two separate mechanics advised that the engine has seized due to lower engine failure, likely a defect in the oil sending unit. The vehicle has 116,000 miles, just being the factory warranty limit, and had had regular documented maintenance and shows no sign of abnormal wear or neglect. I an having a complete and costly engine replacement. I have contacted hyundai and they refuse to take any responsibility for the defective engine.

While driving on the highway, the car sputtered and then lost the ability to accelerate.the car did not shut down, but the check engine light was on.i was able to pull the car to the side of the road without incident.the car, even after being shut down and re-started, would not gain the ability to accelerate, so the vehicle was towed to the dealer.the dealer stated the car needed a software update, which was performed.two days after picking the vehicle up from the dealer, the same circumstances occurred.this time, however, after turning off the vehicle and re-starting, the car was drivable, however the check engine light remained illuminated.heading back to the dealership tonite. As i do all highway driving, and this is a clearly unsafe situation.
On monday, november 12, 2018 i was driving at 60 mph on interstate 64 in newport news, va.i started hearing a clanging noise from the front of the car.i thought a fender had come loose.the noise persisted and i realized it was coming from the engine compartment.my vehicle, with 140,527 miles also had a burning smell although there was no fire.i pulled over to the side of the road and was towed to williamsburg hyundai dealership in williamsburg, va.they called me later that day and told me that "something had come loose in the engine and made a hole in the engine block".i was told i needed a replacement engine at a cost of $7,200 when the vehicle is only worth about that on the private market.the dealer did not inform me about the issues with the theta ii engines in the 2011-2014 hyundai sonatas which has the same engine and has been recalled.i called hyundai customer care and opened a case with them on november 15, 2018.they advised me to have the dealer submit a claim request form concerning the incident and they would determine what to do.nhtsa needs to recall all 2012 santa fe's with the theta ii engine now before someone is killed from a crash caused by an engine malfunction at high speed.my hyundai case number is 12401191.
1st incident occurred while driving approximately 20 mph in morning rush hour traffic.the rpms dropped to idle and the engine malfunction light came on.the accelerator would not respond to increase speed or rpms.i rolled to the shoulder of the road and turned off the car.when i re-started it, the engine malfunction light was still on but i was able to drive off the road and to the dealer.same thing happened two additional times on my way to the dealer.dealer advised that a computer update was needed.i was told the repair was made.next morning i drove approximately 5 miles and the same issue happened, except this time i was traveling 55 mph. Re-started the car and was able to drive back to the dealer.i am now being told that the throttle body is being replaced as per instructions from hyundai and that i was not the only person having this repeat problem.
Faulty theta ii engine. Driving on the freeway, heard knocking noise in the engine. Took the car directly to the dealer, service advisor heard the same noise, said the car was unsafe to drive. He said some of their engines have this known problem & he'd check for a recall. Said mine was not recalled, i'd have to pay for a new engine. He sent the car back to the mechanic who put it on a lift, heard the noise, brought it right back down, agreeing it was the known problem. The sa said he would submit a request to corporate to pay for the engine. The fact that he recognized the problem immediately and knew to do a corp. Approval request to pay to replace the engine proves he knew it was a faulty engine & hma should pay for it. I rented a car to drive the 2 hours home.my car has been there 10 weeks. Hma denied my claim 3 times (once after the dealer escalated through his district manager).after much research i realized this engine has been recalled for millions of cars - hyundai & kia, different models, different years. Mine is not recalled - yet. The engine was manufactured so that shavings drop on to the engine and eventually cause the failure (it is much more detailed & technical that that). If i had continued driving, the result would have been the engine seizing while driving or throwing a rod out of the engine while driving. Hyundai has this engine on the road right now in millions of cars, it is extremely dangerous , they refuse to take responsibility (except in the lawsuit they lost). They are under nhtsainvestigation for the delayed recalls. The other 2 excuses given to me by hma were: my car is 1k mi out of warranty & i did not buy it from a hyundai dealer. All 3 reasons (no recall being the first) are completely invalid. They manufactured a faulty engine. When the defect appears, where the car was purchased and whether it is recalled yet, are not valid excuses.
Purchased vehicle new 6/15/12. We changed oil at proper intervals. I noticed when we first started cara tappet noise coming from engine. No lights shown on dash.i immediately took it to the nearest hyundai dealer in fear of causing damage to engine. They kept car for about 4 hours . They called and told us engine was gone. We purchased extended warranty at time of purchase. They told us sludge was in engine. This was caused by owner neglect. Found numerous owner testimonies on line which the same thing. Hyundai has numerous class actions suits on them. They have major manufacturing problems with the cleaning process with metal filings left in engine. Look on line under hyundai engine failures there are numerous websites regarding this issue. Consumer needs to be made aware of this if they don't already. Word of advice , stay far away from hyundai. They don't stand behind their so called warranty. The extended warranty is not even worth the paper its printed on. The best thing they could do is take care of all complaints against them and then go bankrupt.
Engine failure on interstate while travelling 70 mph. Knocking noise and complete loss of power. Would not restart. Dealership advised the motor locked up.
The contact owns a 2012 hyundai santa fe. The contact stated that the check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was towed to a local dealer and was diagnosed with needing the throttle body module to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. When going up a hill the engine lost power and had no throttle response, i got it off the road and parked and shut off the engine, waited a few min. And restarted the engine and drove home with out any more power loss but the check engine light was on and engine was surging, took it to the dealer on 5-21-13 for repair, left dealer and drove home, on 5-23-13 the check engine light came back on with power loss and no throttle again, shut off and restarted and had throttle response and power but engine light is on, now today 5-24-13 the same thing happened, check engine light came on and no throttle, i called dealer and now have an appointment for tuesday due to the holiday, if this would happen in traffic there could be an accident and someone could get hurt. This will happen anytime when the check engine light is on, and the dealer states its ok to drive.
Motor started knocking while driving, took to shop and was told motor is no good. Needs to be replaced. Cost 6100.00
My 2012 hyundai santa fe has lost power twice while driving. The first time this occurred was on april 11, 2013.it happened again on march 1, 2014.both times the vehicle shut off while driving at a slow speed.the first time was on a roadway, the second time was in a parking lot.i have read of similar experiences on the internet.i have notified the dealer and hyundai customer service of both incidents.hyundai has advised there is nothing they can really do unless they are able to duplicate the issue.
The contact owned a 2012 hyundai santa fe. The contact stated while driving 50 mph, the vehicle start to make an abnormally loud sound coming from the engine. The vehicle started shaking. The contact pulled the vehicle to side of the roadway, turned off and restarted the vehicle however, the failure persisted. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact drove the vehicle to an independent mechanic who diagnosed the vehicle with engine failure, and stated that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacture was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 120,000.
Was driving 65 mph heading south to key largo. The car started vibrating and knocking. The car began to labor, i was able to pull it off the road before it quit completely.the motor died and wouldn't turn over.the battery appeared fine as radio, lights etc., were still working.there was no indication that the car overheated. I popped the, hood, checked my fluids which all seemed to be fine. I did note some oil on the ground and it appeared to have a drip from above. I towed the car to my mechanic.after looking it over, he told me to tow it to the dealer. I'm at just over 119,000 miles; he felt this may be covered.upon initial diagnosis, the dealerdetermined that i have a hole in my engine block and it looks like the rod shot out of the block.the manufacturer said they are willing to pick up 60% of the repair which would leave me with a repair bill over the value of the vehicle.my insurance company did an investigation, today, and determined that the damage was mechanical and noted the crankshaft was broken.mechanical failure is not covered by my insurance.the 2012 santa fe with the theta ii engines should have been included in the theta ii recall regardless of where it was manufactured.i feel for the hyundai and kia owners who continue to suffer through these continued engine problems making the car worthless.
The contact owns a 2012 hyundai santa fe. The contact stated while driving 50 mph, there was an abnormal sound and the vehicle hesitated to accelerate above 35 mph. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact pulled over to the side of the roadway, turned of the vehicle, and had the vehicle towed to the residence. An independent mechanic was contacted and arrived at the residence to inspect the vehicle. The contact was informed that there was an internal failure within the engine. There were no leaks found by the mechanic. Sterling mccall hyundai (10505 southwest freeway, houston, tx 77074, (713) 981-4400) was contacted. The contact was informed that the vin was not under recall. The vehicle has not been diagnosed. The contact felt unsafe driving the vehicle. The contact referenced nhtsa campaign number: 20v746000 (engine) as possible solution to the failure however, the vin was not included. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact to take the vehicle to the dealer to be diagnosed. The failure mileage was unknown.
The vehicle was stationary in a private parking lot at a doctor's office. I tried many times to start the vehicle. The engine sounded like it would kick over but did not. I then heard a kind of whirring sound when attempting to start the engine and noticed smoke coming from under the hood. I exited the vehicle and opened the hood. A significant amount of smoke was coming from the lower part of the engine. The smell was kind of electrical in nature. I was concerned that the engine would catch fire so i went into the doctor's office, asked for a bottle of water, then doused the left side of the engine. I left my car in the parking lot and was picked up by my family. I am quite afraid to even attempt to start the car again. I will have to call a tow truck to take the car to a mechanic. There is no reason for the engine to have smoked like that.
The contact owns a 2012 hyundai santa fe. Without warning, the engine seized. The dealer and manufacturer indicated that the vehicle was excluded from nhtsa campaign number: 17v226000 (engine and engine cooling), although the vehicle was exhibiting the same condition in the recall. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where the engine assembly was replaced. The contact was uncertain if the oem part would fail again. The approximate failure mileage was 85,155. Updated 06/21/17*lj
The engine went out at 50,000 miles and was replaced and then went out again at 105,000 miles. Same issue. Have contacted hyundai and they will not do anything to help me. Engine stalled on freeway first time and almost caused a collision, 2nd time on freeway stalled at freeway speed and almost caused another collision.
Our 2012 hyundai sante fe has suddenly lost power on three occasions. The first two times we were driving at highway speeds, lost power and managed to get to the side of the road without being hit from behind. The dealer initially did an ecm upgrade and after the second incident replaced the throttle body assembly. A year later (march 2014) the same thing happened while driving about 15 mph. Unlike the previous episodes, there was no code and the dealership couldn't replicate the problem. They told me to take the car but i refused because it was such a safety problem. After two weeks with the car they replaced the throttle body assembly again. I am concerned that this is going to happen again and tried to work with the dealer to replace the car but without luck. I've seen on the internet that this problem is common with this particular car and can't understand why there isn't a recall. Many people experienced the same scenario as i did and also believe the next time they could be killed.
The contact owns a 2012 hyundai santa fe.the contact stated that while traveling 60 mph, the vehicle stalled as all indicators lights illuminated on the instrument panel.the vehicle was towed to the dealer.the technician diagnosed that the ecm carburetor was defective and needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was not contacted. The vehicle was repaired but the failure has recurred several times.the failure and current mileage was 24,741.
Engine knock that caused engine to fail with less than 95,000 miles despite defaults maintenance.
This is the second incident.the first was in september 2013.both times i was traveling at 15 mph when the car engine stalled and i lost steering power and braking power.i was able to pull over to side of road and put car in park it then restarted.engine warning light came on both times.i call hyundai customer service and was told to have car towed to closest dealer which is over 60 miles from me.they are not sure if i will be reimbursed for towing fees this far.
While driving the 2012 hyundai santa fe to tennessee from atlanta, with my wife and daughter as passengers, i felt a heavy bump on the interstate, and wondered if a tire had gone flat. Shortly after this, i saw heavy smoke in my rearview mirror, letting me know that there was a problem with my car. A person driving in a lane to my left told me the car was on fire, so i pulled over immediately. I got my wife and daughter out of the car, and walked them to a safe distance about 150 feet from the car. I had the car towed to a repair shop. The mechanic told me that a piston (or pistons) had blown through the bottom of the engine, and i would need to replace the entire engine. It was towed back to my house, and will no longer start. This was the final friday in april 2018. The vehicle was in motion, at a speed near 60 mph, on i-75 north from atlanta, driving straight ahead.
While turning into a parking lot, engine died without warning. This is the third time the engine has died without warning while driving at low speeds. When the engine dies, the car loses steering and brakes and is very unsafe.
2012 hyundai santa fe. Consumer writes in regards to engine problems. *ldthe consumer stated that the vehicle stalled with no warning. The vehicle would not start and the shift lock froze. The engine needed to be replaced.
On may 12th, 2018 i was driving down the highway when the car started to jerk, i keep my foot on the gas but could feel the car slowing down. I was passing a vehicle at about 60mph and another car was behind me. This car has about 140,000 miles on it. And now it's knocking. I had it towed to texan hyundai in rosenberg, texas. I was told i need a new motor. This one has internal problems. I was also told these motors are no longer made and one was found with 75,000 miles on it. Total repairs was close to $8000. I have kept it well maintained and never had problems with it.
On september 1, 2020,the engine started to slow down and make a crunching cracking noise about a mile later we came to a complete stop, on a main hwy.we had to call aaa to come get us. We had the police stay behind us until the tow truck came. It took 45 minutes due to the heavy traffic and time of day.
Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).driving car at 25 mph - loud bang in engine area followed by short burst of banging. Car thru a connecting rod thru the motor block. This is a 2012 awd sante fe model - here is the connection this engine was made in alabama the 2.4 ltr four cylinder and was recalled due to debris in engine crankcases.....the sonata was the recall. This same engine is in my sante fe. My mileage is only 59+ k miles. They wont replace it.your nhtsa reported this on september 25, 2015, a report written by [xxx] of consumer reports, this same engine was produced for sante fe, kia optima, kia sorrento etc. Don't you think that this 2.0 ltr and 2.4 ltr "theta ii" engine, which in sonatas alone was a 470,000 car recall... Is the very same engine that is failing in other models of kia and hyundai. This catastrophic engine failure at only 59k miles could have killed my daughter if she was on the freeway. Your report states this engine is the same engine built in the same us mfgr plant in alabama and that it was also used in the hyundai sante fe my vehicle- between their production of 2009 and 2012 - still a coincidence --- i don't think so. There are numerous reports of this engine failure in the internet and the pricing gauging of the consumer from $4,500 to over $8,000 when this defective engine should be replaced from hyundai for free. They are hiding the truth here look at this nhtsa written report. I don't have specific photos but can get them. Today the hyundai dealership on rt 130 burlington looked at my vehicle and declared that i need a new engine and then suggested a used low mileage engine. I want a new replacement just like they replaced in the sonatas with the very same engine, if you can help me at all or reopen this can of worms that hyundai is leaving under the rug it would help other people who have been hurt by hyundai. My contact [xxx]- cell [xxx] *dl
The contact owns a 2012 hyundai santa fe. While driving 65 mph, the contact heard an abnormal noise and noticed black smoke coming from the hood. Was driving around 20mph on a service road, when i heard a loud noise from under the hood. All the dash lights turned on and the truck shut off. No power steering and no power brakes. I put transmission in neutral and coasted towards side of the road. Tried to start, but nothing happened when i turned the key. Had towed to dealership. They said total engine failure. 2012 hyundai santa fe 3.5 liter 2wd. 69,900 miles. 10year/100k mile warranty. Original owner. All maint. Has been performed. They are declining warranty due to "exceptional maintenance neglect". We have provided them with all the documation. They declined it twice. Now i'm being shoved off to hyundai lawyers.
Driving aprox 20 mph, with no warning engine shuts down, unable to steer. Second time was driving at 40 mph. This has happened three times. Dealer cannot find or reproduce problem.
I was driving my vehicle on the highway at 60mph. I was on a slight incline and proceeded to pass the vehicle in front of me. Upon arriving to the upcoming town i noticed a distinct loud knock in the engine compartment and loss of power, i immediately pulled in to a service station. The mechanic informed me that is sounded like a connecting rod and driving it any further would not be recommended. I was quite a distance from home and so with a tow service and rental car i paid almost $700.00 to get home with the vehicle.
Vehicle picked up after inspection at dealer and driven approx. 1 mile when vehicle experienced sudden loss of power.took back to dealer, miller hyundai, and they advised nothing wrong.then on 11/11/13 same thing occurred.miller hyundai advised they completed an ecm upgrade.left dealer lot and drove approx. 1/2 mile and same thing occurred.miller hyundai then replace the throttle body on 11/14/13.on 12/19/13 the same thing occurred, sudden lost of power.this is the 4th time in 8 months that this has occurred.
Driving ca i580 westbound, bright sunny day (2:45pm 9/24/19) in 2012 santa fe with 111k miles on it.going highway speed, without warning (no knocking, no acceleration issues) the engine shut down: oil, battery and engine lights illuminated.having no power steering, i muscled the car down the nearest off-ramp (coasting 3/4 mile, i was lucky to be in the far right lane).i had also owned a 2011 sonata that went thru 3 engine failures with symptoms (each time, acceleration issues, gearing hesitation and knocking occurred).with the santa fe, no such symptoms, it just shut down after running perfectly.i called roadside assistance and they tried to jump start the car -- no luck.a tow truck took the car to a local hyundai dealership in dublin, ca.they determined that the crankshaft was frozen causing an engine seizure.i asked if this car was covered under the various engine recalls that have plagued numerous other hyundai models and they said "no".so it seems i am another victim(4 times over; the sonata was lemon lawed) of hyundai's engine shoddy manufacturing issues.i am awaiting the hyundai service department's official report and cost analysis.i will be contacting hyundai america's customer service tomorrow.
When making a right hand turn at slow speed the cars stalls out. Today 7/16 is the 3rd time this has happened. The same event happened twice in the same week about 6 months ago then not again. This sounds too similar to the problems w/ gm cars.
2012 hyundai santa fe. Consumer writes in regard to nhtsa safety recall 20v-746.the consumer stated the vehicle sputtered as if it were running out of gas. The failure has occured on multiple occasions. The dealer was unable todetermine the cause of the failure.
The contact's sister-in-law owns a 2012 hyundai santa fe. The contact stated while driving at various speeds, there was an abnormal knocking sound coming from the engine. The contact also stated that the vehicle would shut-off intermittently while driving at various speeds without warning. Neither the contact nor his sister-in-law had taken the vehicle to be serviced or diagnosed for the failure. Upon investigation, the contact discovered nhtsa campaign number: 20v746000 (engine) which he linked to the failure. The contact called a local dealer who informed him that her vehicle was not included in the recall due to the date the engine was manufactured. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 202,000
Well maintained engine with 128,000 miles failed catastrophically without warning at highway speed. Oil pressure, rpm and temperature gauges did not indicate a problem.piston apparently shattered and blew through the bottom of the engine.
I was informed by hyundai in december 2020 that their was an important safety recall on my 2012 hyundai santa fe (vin: [xxx]). The notice stated that his was very important and needed to be fixed because it could cause a crash. It is now the end of february and i have still not been contacted with a remedy. This is unacceptable. They should just replace the whole motor rather than risking our lives unnecessarily. We purchased the car new expecting that hyundai would use the highest quality parts. Apparently they did not. We want hyundai to resolve this safety risk immediately. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).
At 2 times in the last few months the car engine has suddenly stopped while driving slowly on level ground. Lost power steering and power brakes. Car restarted immediately. So far dealership unable to reproduce or help with problem.
Had just left the house and was a few blocks down the road when check engine light came on and engine lost acceleration power. Engine had idle speed and was able to make it back home under idle speed. Turned engine off and when i restarted the engine it seemed to have regained acceleration and drove around the block with a little more power but check engine light is still on. This is the 2nd time in the last two months for the same problem. Taking it to the dealer when they open tomorrow, but last occurence they stated carbon build up on the injectors as the problem. Wife is now scared to drive the car as this problem creates a dangerous driving situation if it happens during heavy traffic.
Driving on a 2 lane highway about 40mph & the car just stalled.lost power steering & brakes & was almost hit from behind.i was able to pull over without incident.second time, i was turning into my driveway & vehicle stalled again.i was unable to complete turn because of loss of power steering & came within inches of hitting my mailbox.both times i took the vehicle into the hyundai dealer & was told that they could not replicate the problem & the car was driving fine.i will be following up with hyundai complaints department.

I pulled off the interstate and had to have vehicle towed to the mechanic. I learned the engine blew a rod and needs to be replaced. 114,000 miles on it.
The engine stalled the 5th time during driving! almost caused another accident!
Engine started making a popping sound clow to fast contingent on throttle. Engine threw a rod. Needs new engine at 77,000
I was driving on the freeway, and noticed a ticking sound. Over 2 miles it became progressively worse until it was a loud knocking. I had to exit one freeway, and merge to another, before i could get to an actual exit. Upon trying to accelerate to speed to merge, the knock became severe, i lost compression, and the suv died. There was a puff of smoke out of the exhaust and i rolled to the shoulder. After being towed to the dealership i found out that the #4 rocker arm had shot through the engine block causing a hole in the engine.

I was driving 65 mph on the highway. I heard a clunk in the engine and my oil light and check engine light came on. The car lost all power and now i'm told i need a new engine. Car only has 108,000 miles on it.
The contact owns a 2012 hyundai santa fe. While driving approximately 70 mph, the vehicle shut down without warning. The engine was restarted and the vehicle was towed to an unknown dealer in jackson, tn. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated there was no recall. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The vin was unknown. The failure mileage was 100,000.
While driving on the highway, without any warning, an internal piece of my engine shot a hole through my engine block.fire started shooting out of my engine and thankfully i was able to pull over and get out without the fire getting worse.the driver behind me pulled over and told me that he could see the fire under the car while driving behind me.he stopped traffic until we confirmed that the fire was out. The fire was still visible from the underside of my vehicle for a couple minutes but it stopped without the whole car igniting.i reported this incident to hyundai usa.they assigned a case number to me but told me that the hyundai dealership, that my car was towed to, did not see evidence of fire so they dropped the case.i told them that i had a witness, the driver behind me from the national guard, and they told me that it didn't matter because they didn't see fire damage and therefore couldn't validate my claim regardless of the witness.the car had no check engine light on, the oil was changed regularly, and there was no reason for the engine to suddenly, without warning, blow out the block and shoot fire.i can only assume that this was a very dangerous and potentially deadly manufacturing defect.my attempts to pressure hyundai to check my engine again has only led to them to telling me that in 30 days they could get someone else to look at the engine to validate my claim.
For the second time oil pressure switch has failed and needs to be replacedcar only has 58456 miles on it another 420 bucks
My 2012 hyundai santa fe i was driving home on the freeway, all of a sudden the oil light went on. So i immediately changed lanes to get off the freeway. I thought i need to get oil, than the engine light came on!i realized that i was losing power so got to the side of the road out of harms way. I tried to turn on the engine. There was nothing. I got towed to a auto repair shop. And left the car over night. It was so late to look at car. In the morning i called two different hyundai dealerships to get help on perhaps an engine recall. At both places the forward me to someone to help me, but both location hung up on me.so i paid a $500 fee to the repair shop to look at my car. They had to remove the engine and finally said it would need a rebuilt engine and labor at a cost of $6000.so i could afford that.a friend looked up my vin number and that there was a recall on my car. Now i have to find a hyundai service who will fix my recall problem.i need to know what to do next. I'm 75 an my husband is 85. Looking to rent a car today.
Car has stalled while driving three times, all at low speeds. 3/4 tank of gas, no less. Car also won't start at times unless you move shift lever. Car is under warranty and dealer keeps saying nothing wrong.not starting is very minor. Car stalling in traffic is a major safety issue.
Takata recall i brought my car 1 year ago i've been doing maintenance oil change, tune up on my car, however it started making some type of ticking noise when i brought it back to the dealership i was told i could pay for a new engine or drive the car until it breaks down. I don't have any money for a new engine. I put 5000 dollars on the car for a down payment. Im also financin it at this time. Also the breaks making a squeaky sound in i know my breals are good.
Vehicle began producing a loud knocking sound while accelerating. Mechanic advised that connecting rod bearing was damaged. Vehicle had approximately 100,000 miles and had received regular oil changes. Mechanic recommended replacing engine.
I was driving on the highway when the engine began to make a noise. It is an engine failure and has to be replaced.
Catastrophic engine failure on the highway at 112k miles. Connecting rod through the block. This same engine has been recalled in sonatas and kia sorentos of the same year, but for some reason not the santa fe.the sonata and sorentos were recalled due to manufacturing processes leaving metal debris in oil passages, which eventually blocks oil from reaching the rod bearings leading to the same failure our santa fe experienced. Hyundai needs to expand the recall to all effected models.
1) historical details / event:when i bought the car (august, 2012) i noticed the occasional sticking of the throttle and when pressing the break the car would seem to want to accelerate - this would happen once every three months: the dealer said they couldn't find anything.2) recent event:on 07/07 while driving at 45mph the car immediately started slowing down to less then 10mph and the check-engine-light came on.after pulling over and sitting for a while the car would go up to 30mph - 40mph: over that and it would occur again.per the dealer - drove it to them.on the way - this slow down occurred multiple times between 30-40mph, once while slowing / breaking - the car immediately accelerated (rpm over 2500) and i almost had a major accident.dealer diagnosed it as a known issue related to tsb: 13 fl 002 (throttle body bore carbon fouling / p2106/p2110 limphome mode / p0638 throttle actuator control range and that the break issue was due to excessive break booster air causing the throttle assembly to lock open.dealer claimed issue was known but not seen often and never repeated.had car all day to fix (finished: 07/08).asked dealer about other tsbs in the database and was told none of them applied or were applicable.3) recent event:on 07/08 after leaving the dealer, got 9 miles of driving when it occurred again after making a 25mph right turn and accelerating to 40mph [almost was read-ended by a truck].dealer now closed for the evening.will be contacting dealer first thing on 07/09 and demanding fix and/or replacement - as this is now multiple times with the dealer denying the severity of this.

The engine stalled the 4th time. Dealership could not reach a diagnosis and unable to fix it..
While driving on the hyway at 65 the engine seized and broke the engine blockspraying oil onto the hot exhaust almost catching fire. This engine has been very well maintained and gave no warning signs of haveing a problem. A connecting rod bearing starved for oil and broke the rod.hyundai was contacted and declined to inspect or investigate this engine failure and almost catching fire. They also declined to help with the repairs or costsi spoke to maria at hyundai corporate and my case number with hyundai was 17260696also the avaliabillity of the replacement engine is limited to a short block because hyundai does not have enough engines to replace them all that are going badsadly my car is one year off from falling under the engine recall so im stuck footing the bill
The contact owns a 2012 hyundai santa fe. The contact stated that while pulling into a parking space, she heard an abnormal banging sound coming from the engine with the check engine warning light illuminated. Upon inspection, the contact became aware that the rod bearing fractured and pierced through the engine block. The contact had the vehicle towed to an independent mechanic where the vehicle was left in the possession of the mechanic. The manufacturer had been notified of the failure and offered no assistance. Recently, the contact received notification of nhtsa campaign number: 20v746000 (engine) which she linked to the failure. A dealer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 180,000. Vin tool confirms parts not available.
2012 hyundai santa fe had complete power loss on interstate while moving at 65mph in the left most lane.engine shuttered, check engine light came on and engine power went to idle rpm.there was no throttle responce and steering became heavy.managed to cross two lanes and get the vehicle to the shoulder.shut vehicle off and restarted it.check engine light stayed on and engine appeared to function normally.accelerated from shoulder into traffic.drove for 1/4 mile and incident again repeated itself as described above.fearing for my safety, i parked the vehicle and had it towed to dealer whom i purchased vehicle from.i called (on 5-2-13) the dealer and told them what was happening.the next morning (5-3-12) i called them at 9am to find status of repair.they stated it was already repaired.they stated it is related to the trottle position sensor.they stated they were well aware of the problem.they stated they were having many of the same issues with this type of vehilce.they stated there was a tsb on the problem.does someone have to be injured or killed before a manufacture has the obligation to correct a known problem that repeats itself?look at all the other reports and complaints!i have a wife and 2 children that ride in this vehicle.what now?
Engine rattle one day, engine seize up during downshift getting off expressway the next day. Crankshaft bolt will not rotate.
The vehicle engine stalled randomly during driving, total 4 times, almost causing 4 accidents. The dealer mechanic inspected the vehicle but could not find the causes for this problem and therefore was unable to fix it, leaving the vehicle in a status with tremendous safety concerns.
4/1/2016: driving on interstate i-40 westbound in las cruces in a construction zone, the car engine died, but i was able to get to shoulder. Car towed to auto repair shop, but problem could not be diagnosed; car eventually restarted. 2nd attempt to diagnose on 4/11/16; none could be found. Car started to make occasional loud engine noise over ensuing months. I contacted hyundai, and in october 2016 was told to bring car 100 miles back to las cruces, nm (borman autoplex) for further diagnosis. Borman diagnosed metal shavings in engine (similar or identical to problem for the 470,000 sonatas with metal shavings in the engine). A full engine failure and engine replacement was recommended. I contended that the engine should be replaced free of charge, as it was a manufacturing defect and the vehicle dying without notice while being driven could prove dangerous or fatal to the driver/passengers. The engine failed fully, and the vehicle is not drivable. Again, issue began 4/1/2016; engine failed completely 12/28/2016.
On thursday mar 22 2012 i was driving my hyundai santa fe se awd with 2400 miles on it in two way down hill road with a speed of 20 to 25 miles per hour than all of sudden without any warning or any sign the car just die on me i tried to turn it back on it did turn on so next day i took it to hyundai delear in san jose california theey checked it and said they couldn't find nothing wrong with so i am kind of concern about my safety and my family if this does happen again.
Highway driving at 55mph, complete and total loss of drive train and engine power, check engine light illuminates. No throttle capability. Engine reduces to idling speed, but transmission stays engaged. Vehicle slows down and driver pulls off road.all electronics appear to work.gas pedal has no interaction with engine throttle.required tow off highway to hyundai dealer. Hyundai dealer repaired problem with computer revision update. Tsb unknown.
This incident has happened 3 times so far.while driving i start to reduce speed.the speed gets down to about 20-25 mph and the vehicle completely loses all power.it just shuts down in the middle of driving.there is no power steering or anything.i turn the ignition to start the car again and it starts no problem.i may not have the problem again for another month or so.this is a very dangerous and scary situation.i pray to god that it doesn't happen while i'm traveling down the highway.i asked hyundai about it and they didn't seem to be too concerned.they said there weren't any recalls but i could bring it in to get checked out.
1st of many total engine de-powerments happened at a stop sign, going approx.15 mph. I had filled the gas tank and at the first stop sign i came to, the engine check light came on; and it died, powerless.i coasted to my destination (less than a block away) and called my service rep at danbury hyundai (ct). She told me it was due to an incorrect gas cap replacement, to undo the gas cap and start the car. It worked. After the first episode, this absolute powering down of everything, brake, steering, control; happened so often, it became routine. Gas tank filling had no bearing-but it happened at stop lights or stop signs, so i was able to coast to the side of the road, put the car in park and restart it. All that confidence evaporated yesterday. I was due to get on the highway and drive about 45 minutes on a combination of highway and thruway to my daughter's. I was on a busy local road that passes through danbury when the car's engine light came on, without me being at a stop sign or red light, or even braking for any reason, and i lost all control of the vehicle. This happens so suddenly, i might add, that you have no time to even activate the emergency flashers, or do anything besides grab the wheel with both hands and try to get over as far to the right as possible to avoid being hit from behind. I narrowly escaped being rear ended by a dump trunk directly behind me. I put the car into park, started it up, and called my service dept. At hyundai. I explained that this happened again, since i had originally told them when i had the car serviced in may of 2014, and they had told me then, thatthey couldn't duplicate it, so they couldn't fix it. I explained that had i been already on the thruway i would be dead instead of on the phone. I came home called my lawyer and found his advice so helpful, i'm sharing it. Go to bbb.com, auto line. They offer arbitration at 0$.
Was traveling on interstate at 70 mph. Exited and slowed to about 35 mph, at which time the engine shut down. Engine started right back up and ran ok rest of way home. The next day when driving up a hill, engine began to knock and check engine light came on. I continued on to an autozone where i had it checked with a code reader. Code retrieved was p0014 which is b camshaft timing over-advanced or system performance bank 1. Removed valve cover and front cover and inspected the camshaft and timing components. These checked ok, removed oil pan and discovered that the #4 rod bearing had spun on crankshaft. I then found that hyundai had had this problem with many of their 2.4l engines and that there was actually a recall on some. I contacted hyundai by email and was informed that my vin# was not included. So now i am stuck with a vehicle that i owe on and that will cost me at least $5,000 to have a new engine installed, which i can not afford.
We were on a an extended trip and had programmed the gps to take us to a remotepoint we had never been to before.suddenly the gps screen went blank, except for the vehicle marker icon - this lasted for several minutes. It then flashed multiple directions for future turns (which were incorrect), it went blank again, and then reflashed other multiple directions for future terms.this happened several times.ultimately, the gps said we had arrived at our destination, but we were at least 30 miles from one of the points along the way to where we were going. Had i not known generally where to go, i would have been lost in a remote area with little or no other people on the highway to help.
Moisture inside both tail light assemblies
Add my rear tail light assemblies filling with water and condensation to the list of complaints. Back up and brake light bulbs must be replaced after any heavy rain event.
Rear drivers tail light filling up with water.
Right rear brake light assembly leaks water shorting out the right rear brake light, this should be a product recall
Driver tail light assembly is collecting condensation in it.

Driver tail light assembly is collecting condensation in it, causing tail light bulbs to crack and blow out.several youtube videos show fixes, so this is obviously an issue.
While driving home from work, it got dark, so i turned on the lights ( the low beams) i was on the freeway, they seemed fine but when i exited the freeway onto a dark surface road, i was unable to see more than 30 feet ahead of me . There was total blackness above the lights. They are not set properly.i looked online to research if others have had this problem and i found out that it is common and people are just driving with their highbeams on to correct this the low beams areset at a terrible angle, it's crazy how bad they are. I live in a rural area and can not use the low beams at all. They do not illuminate far enough into the distance to make driving at night , safe. I purchased this car from a dealer 11 days ago. I did not test drive the car at night, had i done so i would have asked to have the lights adjusted.i would like you to look into this, as i believe this model vehicle should be recalled to have the head light adjustment fixed in order to drive safely at night and as not to blind other drivers by driving with the high beams on.
A safety accident has not happen with my vehicle but i do not feel safe driving somewhere at night since my front dome lights have quit working when i open my door. I don't have any warranty because y'all took away the good warranty since the car was originally my mother's.please recall

Just bought this car two months ago.at random, and when making a left onto a busy street, accelerating from a stop light, there is a hesitation and a very quick shut down when accelerating. It re-engages just in time to prevent a potential crash.i talked to the hyundai mechanic about this.they test drove it, but since the problem is random, it would make sense that they weren't able to detect it during the test drive. The problem isn't major for now but all it takes is one event to make it so.i was relieved to see other complaints of the same problem on this website.

While driving i smelled electrical smoke, parked car shut off engine, opened hood and found an electrical motor of sorts on fire.
As i was driving vehicle lost all power on a highway very dangerous situation. Again this has happened a second time now with 17000 miles. Dealership said computer update the first time now throttle body i don't think there is an answer very dangerous.
Since purchase (new), the vehicle has intermittently exhibited a issue with its transmission.when cold (originally in the winter months but now in the warmer months as well), backing the car up and placing it in drive causes a 'hard drop or lock into forward gear after the vehicle has started moving.this has been reported to the dealer and inspection of the computer memory shows no issues.the problem is increasing infrequency and regularity.
The vehicle shut itself off when driving locally and on high way. The dealership could not even make a diagnosis. Hyundai headquarters refused to investigate it.
Both cv axle boots torn due to failed lower control arms.
The contact owns a 2012 hyundai santa fe. The contact stated that while driving at 65 mph, the vehicle lost acceleration power and did not accelerate over 30 mph. The engine had to be shut off for the vehicle to regain acceleration. The dealer replaced the throttle body and the computer system was updated. Less than two weeks later, the failure recurred. The vehicle was returned to the dealer and the throttle body was again replaced and the contact was awaiting the results of more testing. The manufacturer was notified and advised her to take the vehicle to a different dealer. The vehicle had not been repaired. The failure was 9,805 according to the invoice, the check engine light illuminated several times, and each time the vehicle was taken to the dealer.updated 02/27/13

While backing out of a parking space the car slowed down and then stopped on its own, i pressed the gas and nothing happened, i then shifted to forward and the transmission slammed into gear violently, but appeared to function normally.i did notice afterward that the "eco" indicator did not work while driving at any speed.i later stopped and restarted the engine and it appeared to function normally and the "eco" light came back on.i previously have had problems with sudden acceleration when stopped and the dealer has not found any problems or made any repairs.
Car with less than 39,000 miles and proper oil checks and changes: oil leaking from the oil pressure sensing unit. Per auto body shop- multiple hours of labor for fix with hefty cost. How is it that a component to the powertrain with this low of mileage is breaking down?
The contact owns a 2012 hyundai santa fe. The contact stated that while attempting to park, the vehicle stalled with no warning. The contact was able to restart the vehicle. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 51,000.
My car is shaking when the vehicle gets up to around 60 miles an hour.
The contact owns a 2012 hyundai santa fe. While driving, the transmission downshifted into a lower gear on its own and the vehicle stopped. An independent mechanic inspected the vehicle and stated that it was still under the 100,000 mile warranty and referred the contact to the dealer. Pohanka hyundai (1770 ritchie station court, capitol heights, md 20743, (240) 788-4240)determined the cause of the failure was not the transmission. The dealer initially found codes related to the abs speed sensor and stated that there appeared to be an electrical failure with the electronic stability control. The dealer further stated that the abs modular was activating on its own, which caused the failure. The repairs would cost $2,900 and the dealer stated that it was not covered under the warranty; however, they offered to cover a part of the labor costs. The dealer had the vehicle for over a month and test drove the vehicle. The dealer stated that the failure recurred after all the repairs and concluded that the transmission may be the cause of the failure. The dealer stated that the original warranty would not cover the repairs because the contact's mother passed away; therefore, the original power train warranty was voided. The manufacturer called the dealer and offered to contribute $630 towards the repair. The failure mileage was 79,000.
The car was parked on a sloping driveway. The keys were removed from the ignition and the car was shifted to park. A 2 year old child alone in the car managed to shift from park to neutral without the key being in the ignition or applying any brake pressure. The car then rolled down the driveway and into traffic. By sheer luck and adrenaline, i managed to run after the car, get the door open, dive in, and stop the car by depressing the brake pedal with my hand before an accident occurred. After this event, i was able to reproduce the shift-from-park-to-neutral-without-key-or-brake behavior 100% of the time. This is extremely dangerous.... My kid could have been hurt or worse. This car should be recalled.
Car has stalled while driving three times, all at low speeds. 3/4 tank of gas, no less. Car also won't start at times unless you move shift lever. Car is under warranty and dealer keeps saying nothing wrong.not starting is very minor. Car stalling in traffic is a major safety issue.
First time at a traffic light waiting to make a left turn off a major roadway.power shut off, engine and battery light went on.unable to put gear shift in park.after a minute was able to turn the engine off and then re-start car.made a complaint to the dealership.a few months after it happened again.this time on the highway. Took it straight into the dealership.they kept it for a couple of days. Diagnosis a loose connection.again same scenario a couple of months after.was told they couldn't find anything wrong it.again - a few monthsafter same thing.this time the battery was changed.again it happened. This past 2 weeks it has been occurring more often.took it in and was told they upgraded the system.exactly 5 days after while making a right turn on a one-way street, the power went off.i barely avoided an accident.by sheer force i was able to avoid running right into another vehicle which was park by steering the car into the opposite direction.what was most upsetting there was a child in the car with me.this is a lease vehicle and i can't get out of the contract.
I pulled into a parking lot, in front of a bakery, and stopped to allow a car to leave a parking spot. I then proceeded to pull into the vacant parking spot and when i applied the brakes, the vehicle sounded like it was actually gunning into a higher gear, and as i was pushing harder down on the brake with my right foot the vehicle jumped the sidewalk in front of the bakery. I proceeded to apply both my feet to the brakes in hopes that the vehicle would stop, and it did. Thankfully no one was injured and the vehicle stopped before entering the bakery window. I called the dealership and arranged for them to tow it to their mechanics department.
The middle seat (passenger) driver's side shoulder seat belt came apart when a passenger tried to buckle up.the passenger pulled the shoulder strap out to pull around and buckle to the seat latch when the latch plate just slide right off of the belt.there was nothing securing the shoulder strap.it just came apart.i went to the dealership to have the problem checked out and fixed as i was certain it would be covered under the car's warranty.i was shocked to find out that i would have to pay a couple of hundred dollars to have the seat-belt fixed!how could the dealer/manufacturer not be responsible for a seat-belt malfunction? i still have the seat-belt problem as i believe that hyundai should fix it and not charge me.if this happened to me, then i feel that it probably has happened to other vehicle owners so i am trying to find out if this is a wider spread problem than just a fluke with me.
A passenger in the back seat went to put on her seatbelt and found that the shoulder harness just came apart making it completely unusable and unsafe. I went to the dealer, fitzgerald hyundai and reported the problem, expecting them to fix it but i was told it was my problem and i would have to pay to have it fixed. I was shocked as i believed that a seat belt malfunction was a safety issue that any dealer would take immediate responsibility for. When i insisted that the i did absolutely nothing to cause the malfunction and the dealership should fix it i was told that they would have to check it out with a higher management level and would get back to me. I have had no follow up from fitzgerald. I followed up twice by email once using their own website form hoping that would get a response, but still nothing.i am now concerned that this issue with the seatbelt may be a problem with other hyundai owners so i am reporting the problem. I do not use my back seat for passengers very often but nevertheless i feel a seatbelt malfunction is a safety concern of high priority and something that a dealer should take care of immediately and there should be no dispute!
Impossible to sit with back fully up against the seat back because the headrest pushes my head forward so that i am looking down at my lap instead of straight ahead. Painful and unsafe.i have removed the headrests and turned them around.
While traveling on state park road greenville sc, a mail truck was stopped in road. As i applied the brakes, the brake pedal went all the way to the floor. I swerved off the road to avoid hitting the truck. I side swiped several trees causing approx. $5000.00 worth of damage.
Today april 28, 2015, my mother, daughter and i were coming home from running an errand, when we came to are house we pulled up and went in reverse to pull into the drive way like normal so we can park the car in the garage. When we pulled in we were going just 5mph. Then suddenly when my mom was pushing the brake the stop and put the car into park. The car out of no where lurched and crashed into are washer, water heater , and caused the back windshield to shatter. An we have had this car for 3 years and its always the same routine, so were very shook up on how this could happen. Even though this happened at a resident im filing this since it could happen anywhere to another car.
I was stopped in a left turn lane and i believe i was the 8th or 9th vehicle in line.i had my foot on the brake pedal and the pedal went to the floor!i turned my steering wheel to the left as far as i could, but i tapped the bumper of the vehicle in front of me.there were no injuries and very minor damage to the rear bumper of the vehicle in front of me, and very minor damage to my front bumper.no othervehicles were involved.i called the hyundai dealership and told them that my brakes had failed and had caused an accident.i was told thatit was probably not the brakes, but the master brake cylinder.i had the vehicle towed to the dealership (carl gregory hyundai, at northlake, columbus, ga)this morning i called to check on the status of the vehicle and was told that they had driven the vehicle for 200 miles and could not reproduce the problem.i had already told them that i was stopped in a turn lane when the brakes failed!!i was told that the hyundai representative told them to replace the master cylinder.
Please investigate the hyundai line of cars.i was driving this car that i owned.i had just driven 140 miles, and i was on city streets making my way to the inlaws.i stopped at a stop sign and as i accelerated and proceeded to make a right turn on to another city street, the engine completely died.i noticed it when my power steering locked up, i had no brakes and i was headed right toward a home's front door.i was able to stop the car when it hit the curb dead on.i then put the car in to park and turned the car back on and it fired up right away.i really believe that hyundai has the same problem as gm.there was nothing wrong with the car after that and i could not duplicate the incident.i traded the car in a few days later because i refuse to drive it.if you google the problem, i was able to trace it back at least 11 years.how can you trust a car that where the engine will just turn off sporadically.dealership claims "they've never heard of such a thing..." lies.the know about it, they just haven't done anything about it.i seriously think there needs to be an investigation in to this vehicle.i saw stories of peoples hyundais dying on the freeway.they could have been killed.one lady said that she was told next time it happens to leave the car as is and they will tow it and check it out.they towed it after it died and nothing.that's what leads to me believe that in this vehicle, the key can also become disengaged while driving.similar if not exactly to the problems with the gm.i beg of you to investigate!!!
As early as last summer, my 2012 hyundai santa fe started to (intermittently) accelerate when i stepped on the brake.frankly, i thought it was related to the sandals i was wearing. I thought i was occasionally stepping on the gas and the brake at the same time (i have very big feet -- size fifteen).the problem stopped when i switched shoes (which also corresponded to the end of summer).the problem came back intermittently this summer and is now repeatable. When i am going down a steep hill at speeds over about 20 mph, the engine rpm's increase when i step on the brake.it does that while in gear and while in neutral.obviously, if the drive train is in gear, the engine "fights against" the brake; if the drive train is in neutral, the engine revs.if the engine is in neutral or is shifted into neutral after the acceleration starts, the engine races until i let off the brake.it has gone as high as 4-5 k rpm before i let off the brake.all that's required to get the car to return to normal idle is that i pump the brake (let off the brake all the way -- i can immediately re-apply the brake and the problem won't happen again).i have identified a stretch of road near my house where the problem always occurs.driving east at the end of walnut street at the intersection of walnut and boston hill circle, near south street in shrewsbury, ma 01545, it problems always replicates.it also always happens at the bend in the road while going down hill on boston hill circle... Updated10/13/16...video available
Stopped at a red light the brakes failed to work.
All three lights abs, esc, and dbc on dash came on same time after replacing drivers side head light bulb. Wheel speed sensor and traction control impacting the driveability.
My abs lights are on and won't go off. I had it checked for 80$ to get told it is a sensor in the rear hub of tire that is not reading the tire speed. They want 500$ to repair it.
After performing a brake inspection i notice deep grooves within the rear brake rotors. This is not only premature brake wear but this is due to the rear brake calipers locking up.
I was turning right into a parking space, applied the brakes and the vehicle surged/accelerated.it went over a curb and hit another vehicle.when it stopped i looked down and my foot was indeed on the brakes, to the floor. A similar thing happened twice before.i was turning onto another street and the car felt like it surged.fortunately both times there was no one in the other lane or in front of me.
Tl- the contact owns a 2012 hyundai santa fe. The contact stated that while driving approximately 35 mph and coming upon a red light, the contact attempted to stop the vehicle by applying the brakes. The contact indicated that while pressing the break pedal the vehicle initially slowed down but the vehicle would not stop causing the vehicle to crash into the rear of a second vehicle. No injuries were reported. A police report was taken at the scene. The contact also indicated that the airbags did not deploy during the crash. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified and no solution was offered. The failure mileage was 15,000. Jft

"takata recall" my abs lights are on and will not go off as well as the downhill light moving and stationary. The mechanic said it is a sensor in the left rear hub that needs to be replaced.
The contact owns a 2012 hyundai santa fe. The contact was driving approximately 35 mph when the brake pedal was engaged; there was a delayed response and she also heard a squeaky noise.in addition, the pedal extended to the floor abruptly and the vehicle eventually came to a stop. The failure occurred intermittently at any given speed. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer who was unable to determine the cause of failure. The technician stated the defect was a common issue. There was a recall related to the brake malfunction associated with the 2011 model year vehicles under nhtsa recall campaign number 10v613000 (service brakes, hydraulic: foundation disc: caliper). The manufacturer was notified of the problem. The approximate failure mileage was 3,100.
While driving on an overpass and turning to the left, i had just applied the brakes and was applying the gas as i had to get onto the interstate. I noticed the car decelerated, i had no braking power and it was very difficult to steer the car so i coasted to the side of the road. I almost got rear ended by several cars behind me. All the lights were on the car but it seemed dead. I turned the key off and put the car in park. While talking to my husband, i turned the car on and it started and off i drove off with no further problems.what's worse is that day i had my two little girls and my mother in the car. I had to continue to driving since we were on our way to an important doctors appointment. I can't imagine if i were on the interstate at 70 miles an hour.when i called to make an appointment with hyundai service they acted like it has never happened before.
All three lights abs, esc, and dbc on dash came on same time after replacing drivers side head light bulb. Wheel speed sensor and traction control impacting the driveability.
When making a right hand turn at slow speed the cars stalls out. Today 7/16 is the 3rd time this has happened. The same event happened twice in the same week about 6 months ago then not again. This sounds too similar to the problems w/ gm cars.
Twice as i was driving it mid turn the steering wheel locked on the regular street.
Driving aprox 20 mph, with no warning engine shuts down, unable to steer. Second time was driving at 40 mph. This has happened three times. Dealer cannot find or reproduce problem.
Vehicle driven shopping center (approximately 15 mi.)upon leaving vehicle stalled going approximately 15 mph.steering cut out and difficult, but was able to get to the side of the road.was able to restart vehicle after approximately 3 minutes.gas was purchased approximately 1 week prior and vehicle ran fine.will take to the dealer, but based on other reports i do not expect them to find any problems.
The steering wheel makes a "scraping" noise when turned.hyundai says this is "normal"; however, up until a few months ago, the car never made this noise.my wife and i do not feel safe driving the car anymore; however, hyundai refuses to address the problem.my wife and i own a second vehicle that is the exact same make and model and it does not make this sound.since the steering column is critical to the safety of the vehicle -and includes the air bag components, etc., we are very concerned that this could cause premature detonation of the airbag and/or some kind of steering failure.hyundai refuses to fix the problem and we are concerned not just for our own safety but for the safety of all hyundai owners driving with this problem.also, when i tried to escalate the complaint to hyundai's customer care, the supervisor (mr. Julio o.) refused to escalate the complaint -which causes me grave concern that hyundai is obstructing the complaint process in an effort to protect profit margins.
Hi, i am sending this paper due to the unexpected flattened tire accident on 81 i highway in may 26, 2013 2 pm. The tire was suddenly flattened while i was driving in 65~75 mph, so it was a life threatening accident. I really didn't expect this to happen because i had an inspection in maguire a week before the accident occurred. At first, i thought that my tire got impaled by the nail; however, the inspector in maguire couldn't find any nail. Surprisingly, the tire wasn''t leaking anymore after it was refilled again. He and his co-worker tried it several times to make sure it wasn't leaking, and it sure wasn't leaking according to their several attempts. I asked maguire to take responsibility for this weird accident, but they said that the fault is to hyundai not them, while hyundai customer service told me that the responsibility is kumho tire's. Therefore, i asked kumho to take responsibility for my accident and asked the money for the repairing cost of my car. They first claimed that the tire has no technical problem since there is no more air leaking, so they can't pay the repairment cost. Nonetheless, the tire was flattened, which is an unchangeable fact, so i asked once more to take responsibility of my accident. After several attempts, they finally agreed to inspect the tire and send two tires to me. I also agreed at first, but i figured that i can''t really trust them for an honest inspection. I found similar 'flattened tire cases in the internet, so i decided to send it to nhsta for accurate and through inspection. Please help me and many other people who have similar cases to find a reason for a "'no hole, yet somehow flattened tire.thank you.p.s i have inspection papers that i got before an accident and after the accident. I will attach these papers and send a tire if you need a close inspection.
I was turning into a parking lot doing about 5mph when the vehicle suddenly accelerated to a high rate of speed, took me over a cement barrier, a curb, went airborne, landed in a bush which it tore in half and took with me, across the sidewalk and spun in the middle of a busy intersection before the tire blew off the rim and i got it to stop. It was towed to the dealership where it has been for one month as hyundai dragged their heels until i got angry and emailed them. Two days after i emailed them i got the following leaving me with the repairs as well as paying for the rental for a month.thank you for your recent correspondence.we have thoroughly reviewed your comments and regret the circumstances you have experienced.we have reviewed the materials provided and inspected your santa fe.the entire acceleration system, including the pedals and throttle, the brake system, and the transmission were thoroughly reviewed and checked.we were unable to find any malfunctions or defects that would have resulted in the condition you claim caused your accident.
Car engine completely died while on highway without any warnings i am chocked my car has been perfect until now my car barely passed 100,000 and both warranties expired also body pant is chipping off.
After driving the vehicle for approximately 7500 miles i notice an unpleasant odor that smells like melted plastic.it's not the new car smell and at times it can make one nauseous.it is intensified when accelerated.august 2012 (purchased the vehicle june 2012) reported the smell to the hyundai service department at sport durst.i was informed that possibly a "plastic bag" has gotten stuck on the bottom of the car and will burn off.december 2012, i once again informed them of this uncomfortable smell.i can not ride in the vehicle with the outside air coming in because i can smell the melted plastic no matter what state, city, or time of day the nauseating smell is there.the cabin air filter has been changed, the oil has been changed and the way i drive has been changed and even under very slow acceleration the smell is there.the vehicle was taken in june 2013 and still nothing has been done.i nor other passengers or other drivers should not have to smell this burnt smell.

Loud noise, front right, right front axle box. Also 3 warning lights are on including abs,
Noticed my vehicle was pulling to the right and just felt wrong when i drove, took it to a mechanic to check the alignment and brakes (because it was time for pads). The mechanic was shocked to find the strut on the passenger side had rusted and broken completely. Hyundai was going to charge me to check it out and repair because i was outside of my warranty. The mechanic told me to check for a recall since it was not a common issue, there was not a recall so he suggested i file a complaint.
Had my 2012 santa fe towed in to a local repair shop for a horrible noise, and was advised not only did i need new brakes at only 43,159 miles (seems early for this too) but that both front coil springs and strut mounts were extremely rusty and completely broken.these springs already had the 'boot' from the factory which was their 'fix' for prior model years with this same problem.there have been recalls for this problem up to 2011 model year - but not the 2012.my vehicle was just out of warranty. --- note - i still have the broken coil springs as proof.
After hearing a metal rubbing sound when turning right, took the 2012 santa fe into the shop. The mechanic discovered that the front right strut ruined was ruined, the plate it was attached to was broken, and both front coils rusted and broken at the same spot. This seems like a major defect for both coils to be broken at the same spot.this greatly jeopardized me, my wife and the three children in the back seat.
I was driving home on a rural street and heard a long clanking sound and then starting to smell rubber.i drove about 1.5 miles like this and when i got home, the strut/coil spring on the right front was broken off and scraping my tire on the inside.had i been on the beltway, my tire could have blown and a major accident would have occurred.hyundia refuses to cover even though they have recalls for other models/years.i no longer trust this car.
Frontcoil spring rusted and broke; it rubbed against my tire. Not sure how tire did not rupture while i was driving on i-95.the other front coil spring was rusted, but it did not break yet. Clearly this part is defective. Coil had plastic sleeve on it, water must collect underneath and rust it out.created case number 11066195 with hyundai, but they have not acknowledged any responsibility, despite my repeated concerns about safety.they also would not reimburse me for repair because 'it was outside warranty' and that i went to my family mechanic (due to lack of responsiveness from hyundai). I saw online that hyundai has had a history of defective front coil springs (even as recent of 2018), yet they have not taken my complaint seriously.
Broken right front coil spring foiund during routine auot inspection by service mechanic
Loud clanking noise on right front side. Strut is broken. Popping cover off under hood. Lot of movement. I read there are a lot of issues with right front suspension on 2012 santa fe. If this is true where is the recall. Parts are very expensive
Front springs rusted, call recalled due to undercarriage rust, rub against tire, very dangerous hyndai of turnersville has vehicle now waiting to see if hyundai corporate will fix this issue free of charge
There have been numerous incidents that have occurred over the past few months.is intermittent - can happen 2 days in a row or weeks apart.symptomswhen moving forward at a low rate of speed (stop and go traffic on expressway) stop to 10 miles per hour... Every now and then hear a "clunk" sound from the rear of the vehicle - from above the spare tire area. Intermittent - can happen minutes apart or a week apart.have read same type of complaints on internet.took it to multiple mechanics ( hyundai & non-hyundai ) - neither of them could "reproduce" the problem....which is the "problem".... As i told them and have posted here.... This can happen twice in one day and then not re-occur for a week or two..... The mechanics look at me like i'm nuts after they've driven it around and not been able to "reproduce" the problem... Scenarios#1 the vehicle was in motion; at a very low rate of speed (0-7mph); on an upward incline; stop & go traffic#2the vehicle was in reverse, at a very low rate of speed (0-7mph); on a downward incline with sharp turn to the right - backing out of driveway to street#3the vehicle was in reverse, at a very low rate of speed (0-7mph) straight back
Very recently, the car has been stalling out with no warning, no odd sounds and no obvious reason as to why. Dg
To whom it may concern ,i currently own santa fe the problem is hyundai is not recognize the problem with the vechicle i expiain to the service dpt,i absorb a jerk loses acceleration power next escindicator dbc lights comes on tachometer goes 0.the vechicle isstill in motion .i turn the ignitionoff restart the vechicle thevechicle return back in normal state service replied i have to wait for a service lights.iam aware that santafe fires begins in the eng also in the rear.hyundai dont have an answer they want me to drive in danger.i dont need a tragedy.please help [xxx] thx you.information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).
I have been having continuous issues with a loud "clunk" when my car is placed in reverse, turning, shifting gears.it's intermittent, but loud and hard enough that it feels as though the vehicle has been hit.the car does not kick off any codes, however a number of other santa fe owners have has the same issue and eventually needed to have the transmission replaced.
Exiting a parking lot on a slight decline coming to a stop between 0-7 mph without any warning the engine just stops. It starts right back up and have taken to a few different mechanics and they can't find any problems.this has happened 3 times within a two week period. I am just over 100,000 miles on the car. I'm thankful this has not caused and accident yet but scared that it will.
Engine would intermittently run rough, sputter and choke while driving.
The airbag light stays on even after it was reset by the dealership.
Water keep getting into my rear light casing. I had them replaced once but there is water in them again and i understand this might short out my rear lights. We are getti g a lot of rain this season
Accelerating away from stop light, accelerator pedal detached from firewall.the vehicle was 15-20 ft. Into a five lane intersection.the vehicle idled through the intersection safely into a parking lot.fortunately this happened at 0610 on 26 june 2016 when traffic was lite.
I was at a major interstate interchange, over 6 hours from home when i heard a slight noise and the check engine light came on. The car decelerated, but i was able to pull over to the side of the road. As i put the car in park, i heard the engine suddenly revving, as if i were pressing on the accelerator. Car was towed to the closest hyundai dealership, where it sat for a week, waiting for repairs because (i was told) the part could not be located anywhere in the u.s. On monday morning, i called the service department to inquire about my car and i was told it would be fixed by tuesday afternoon at the latest. On tuesday, i called to check on the status of my car and was told that they expected the part to be in on the next truck. This scenario was repeated twice more. At the end of the 3rd day, i was told that the part could not be located and that my car would not be repaired.the warranty covers up to 3 days of trip interruption service, so i asked what i was supposed to do to get home for work and how to get back to my car. Hyundai consumer affairs told me my situation was a unique case and they set up another case # and told me to keep the rental and file the remainder of the cost to the second case after the trip interruption case was settled. I drove the rental car home and back to the service department again the next saturday, when my car was finally repaired. I was out over $600, had a botched vacation, lost my trust in the safety of my vehicle and, as the icing on the cake, hyundai has refused to reimburse me for the second claim. It scares me to know, now, that the throttle position sensor has been a problem since the 2007 model of the santa fe, causing unintended acceleration and sudden deceleration, putting innocent people at risk. It also scares me that this company conducts themselves in such a deceptive manner when dealing with vulnerable people.
Submission from congressman thompson on behalf of constituent re 2012 hyundai santa fe defects.the consumer stated on two separate occasions, the vehicle behaved as if, it were in neutral, although the gear shift was in drive and the check engine light illuminated.the consumer was able to find a dealer, where they applied an approved update to the computer board. The vehicle performed as designed for the next 500 miles. The consumer experienced four similar failures, while driving on the parkway.the consumer went to another dealer, and they replaced the throttle. The consumer has since driven 1,000 miles, with no problem.
The contact owns a 2012 hyundai santa fe. The contact stated that while waiting at a traffic light, the vehicle accelerated independently causing the vehicle to crash into another vehicle. The vehicle was not destroyed and there were not injuries. A police report was filed. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who that there was static electricity built up causingthe failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure who advised to take the vehicle back to the dealer.the failure mileage was 6,210.
The contact owns a 2012 hyundai santa fe. The contact stated that the vehicle failed to accelerate from a brief stop. The contact had to disengage the traction control, turn off the vehicle and restart in order to resolve the failure. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnostic and the computer was reprogrammed. The failure recurred. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure, but offered no further assistance. The failure mileage was 11,000. The current mileage was 12,243....updated 06-19-13the consumer stated the failure occurred three times. During each occurrence the vehicle would fail to accelerate, then the vehicle would shut off and the engine light turned on. Updated 06/28/2013
The contact owns a 2012 hyundai santa fe. While driving 45 mph, the vehicle inadvertently accelerated without warning. The vehicle was taken to capitol hyundai (1050 capitol expressway auto mall, san jose, ca 95136, (408)-340-7321), but was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 61,429. The vin was not available.
While driving my 2012 hyundai santa fe (mileage approx. 13366) on the highway in fairly heavy traffic at around 70 mph and applying pressure to the accelerator, suddenly the vehicle failed to accelerate.i heard a little "blip" noise and felt a very slight jerk, kind of like a sudden gear change or something like that, then the car suddenly started decelerating. I barely missed getting rear-ended by another vehicle and managed to coast across two lanes of traffic to the shoulder of the road without getting hit.i stopped the car and turned it off and called the hyundai dealership and asked them what i should do.i told them the engine malfunction light was on. They indicated that they had never heard of a vehicle doing this before.they said if the malfunction light wasn't blinking, the car was safe to drive and to bring it in at my earliest convenience.on the way home, the deceleration issue happened approximately 3 or 4 more times.this is an incredibly dangerous issue with the vehicle. Took it to a local dealership and the paperwork said they foundissue via tsb.they did an ecm upgrade.vehicle worked just fine for a month and a half and then the exact same problem occurred again.this time i was able to make it home, fortunatelywithout getting into a major accident.had to stop and start the car about 3 times to get home.called roadside assistance and had it towed to a different dealership to see if they can find the real problem this time.at this point, i'm not sure if i will ever feel safe driving this vehicle again. How will i know if the issue has really been fixed?this is a very serious, dangerous problem that could potentially lead to a tragic accident.it's hard to believe that there hasn't been a recall issued to fix this problem.
My car is shaking when the vehicle gets up to around 60 miles an hour.
The contact owns a 2012 hyundai santa fe. The contact stated the vehicle suddenly accelerated after she made a right turn. The failure caused the contact to crash into another vehicle. No one was injured. The contact had to continue to applying the brakes in order to stop the vehicle after it crashed into the other vehicle. The vehicle was towed to the dealer and it was not determined whether or not the vehicle was destroyed. A police report was filed. The vin was not available. The failure and current mileage was 22,000.
This is the third time this has happened but by far, the most significant.this incident occurred 9/8/13 - driving down nys interstate and was passing another vehicle when the car began to lose power.i was traveling at 70 mph and before i knew it was down to 35. I immediately pulled over onto the median, turned the car off and re-started it. (this is what i was told to do on 8/19/13 during the first incident). Prior to that, i put on my emergency flashers, waved my hand frantically out the window for the cars behind me to get over, as there was nothing i could do.after restarting my car i ultimately removed myself from the highway and took the back road home.needless to say, i an quite anxious to get back on the highway and drive my vehicle.i called the dealership again and they told me to bring it in for a software upgrade.i asked if in fact they could just put in a new throttle actuator and they said it cost between $600-$1,000.apparently this condition causing accidents or even possible injuries still does not warrant the new equipment.
The contact owns a 2012 hyundai santa fe. The contact stated while driving approximately 45 mph, the engine stalled with the illumination of the warning indicator. The vehicle was merged to the side of the road. Upon restarting, the vehicle resumed normally. The failure recurred two times and the vehicle was towed to an authorized dealer each time. The computerized system went into the limp mode which caused the throttle body sensor to fail. The vehicle was repaired on the two separate occasions. The manufacturer was not notified of the defect. The approximate failure mileage was 38,000.updated 08-20-14 updated 09/3/2014
The contact owns a 2012 hyundai santa fe. The contact stated that while driving approximately 20 mph, the engine rpms increased excessively as the vehicle suddenly accelerated. The contact mentioned that the failure recurred intermittently. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where the failure was unable to be replicated. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 12,000 and the current mileage was 16,000.
We started the vehicle and the check engine light came on.we then checked the manual and it stated there might be an emissions problem so we checked to make sure the gas cap was tight. We started it again, but the light came on again. We backed up the car, but it would barely move. We called the dealership to have it towed and checked.the dealer called us the next day and said someone cut the wires above the accelerator pedal.that claim was suspicious because the vehicle is locked inside the garage and our house has a security system and a large dog. We also had 6 family member staying with us. Opening the garage door would have woke someone up.also, the vehicles outside the garage were unlocked and untouched.after reading some complaints on here, i see there is an ongoing issue that may have been covered up by the dealership by cutting the wires.the location of the wires would have been extremely difficult to get to inside my garage.they also were cut and not chewed based on the pictures that were taken by the dealership for my insurance company.
The contact owns a 2012 hyundai santa fe. The contact stated that while driving approximately 3 mph and making a right turn into a parking spot the vehicle lunged forward and suddenly accelerated independently. The vehicle crashed into a bush and went through a fence. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a complaint was filed. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 5,000.
The contact owns a 2012 hyundai santa fe. The contact stated that while attempting to drive with both the accelerator and break pedal engaged the vehicle lunge forward. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who stated that the vehicle was operating up to standards. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure who did not offer any assistance. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 4,000 and the current mileage was 14,000. Updated 12/20/12
The contact owns a 2012 honda santa fe. The contact stated that while driving 40 mph, the vehicle decelerated rapidly without warning as the check engine warning light illuminated. The failure recurred on three different occasions. The vehicle was towed to the dealer for diagnosis however, the dealer was unable to duplicate the failure. The vehicle was repaired but the problem persisted. The manufacturer was not notified of the issue. The approximate failure mileage was 1,100. The vin was not available.
While changing lanes, there was a sudden lack of response while i was pressing on the accelerator. This only lasted a millisecond but was enough that i started to press down to complete the change when throttle response returned.i have had this happen about a dozen times in the 3 months since purchasing this auto.
Stopped at a red light. Stepped on gas to move and the engine revved up and it just took off.had to use both feet on brake pedal to stop the car. Going about 1 mph after the light turned green.the engine accelerated and wouldn't stop.nearly hit the car in front of us.may be computer or throttle positioning sensor. And it happened again later. Same day.going straight, up a hill about 2mph and once again the engine sped up and the car took off.it was very difficult to stop.
My santa fe hyundai 2012 accelerated unintentionally when i was turning intoa parking spot.i was making a right turn into the parking spot when it lurched full throttle over two bushes and knocked down a black iron fence and i pressed on the brakes and i was on the side walk.i could have hit a pedestrian!it was very frightening.
February 20,2015 about 7:30 in the evening as i was going up a grade towards a red light , my car surged forward when i was braking.i applied more pressure but the car did not stop until i threw it into park and had hit the car in front of me.i called 911 to report the accident.the car in front had some gate crack.my car had cracked plastic under the bumper and marks on the plastic part of the bumper.
I was at the hyundai dealership in staten island the day after my tire warning light came on. They said that i had to leave the car overnight to see what was wrong with the right front passenger tire. When i returned the next day they said that the tire needed air. My tire warning light came on two more times during the time period that proceeded the service. I filled my tire again with air the second time. Then the third time the tire was completely flat! i called roadside assistance the next morning and they sent someone to come and put the doughnut on the car. I then drove the car to charley's tire a local tire repair shop to see what was wrong with the tire. Sure enough there was a nail in my tire. The tire was non repairable due to the treads being extremely worn, so $180 dollars later i had a new comparable tire put on my car.the treads on the other three tires are also at risk according the mechanic that replaced my tire at the tire shop. The crap condition of the roads on staten island is no help neither for condition was caused by a massive pothole the formed in a sewer manhole cover. Tires are a safety issue and they should be taken care of the first time by the mechanics at the dealership since most car owners bring their cars there to be maintained and fixed, not three times and $180 later by an independent mechanic. If dealership mechanics and service people continue to be lazy in this practice, more and more people are going to be put in danger and going elsewhere to have their automotive problems taken care of properly.
My abs lights are on and won't go off. I had it checked for 80$ to get told it is a sensor in the rear hub of tire that is not reading the tire speed. They want 500$ to repair it.

Lights appeared on dashboard on my vehicle on morning of 8/21/2019, on my way to work. After work, i stopped by bachman hyundai in jeffersonville, in to get diagnostic of what was going on with my vehicle. I met with the service person i would normally see. I was told me that my wheel speed sensor rear lh open/short, part #c1206 and wheel speed sensor rear rh open/short, part #c1209 + she told me i would need to replace my rear rotors as well, i stated i had my rear rotors replacesabout a year &a half ago. She quoted the job more than $1200.00 including parts, labor + taxes. I purchased my hyundai santafe from jim ellis hyundai in atlanta, ga. I reached out to a service tech i trust at jim e. Hyundai/atlanta, he informed me that this was a recall part and hyundai should do a pa replace free of charge. I went back to bachman hyundai, in, told her what was told to me. Pa was done, pa was declined. She stated yes she knew of the recall & why didn't she mention to me. She stated i had not had all of my vehicle serviced at there location and that i was not the original owner and it had more than 13k miles. I asked what did all of this have to do with repairing my vehicle? i contacted atlanta back, was given # for hyundai usa. They could see that pa was done & declined, i asked why, he didn't understand why. He updated a new case # and escalated my complaint and sent new case # hyundai, in to get job done. I received call from hyundai usa today, only toe told that my vehicle is out of warranty is why they cannot repair this recall issue. Please ! i need your help in resolving this simple issue. Today the lady told me, well take your car back to atlanta and have them repair it because they were not approving repairs. So unfair! i have received so many conflicting stories not to repair this recall. Please help me! thank you, [xxx]information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).
