Back in 2011, our 2009 hyundai elantra airbag light would stay on intermittently when the passenger seat was slid back. The light would go off when the seat was slid forward. Hyundai issued a recall in 2011 adding a cover to a sensor that seemed to fix the issue. Now, july 2015 and the airbag warning light is on and stays on. It started again when i: entered the vehicle, started it up, the airbag light went off. I then dropped two rental dvd movie cases on the passenger seat cushion, the weight of the two meager plastic cases triggered the light to come on the instant the cases landed on the cushion. It has stayed on since.

Srs light came on (airbag) when vehicle moving or stationary, contact dealer and oem for problem but no help. Dealer is asking more than $100 for just reading codes.

Takata recall about 2 months ago or 3 months ago my air bag light came on when i started the car and never went off the passenger air bag light that says off gos out when someone sit in the passenger seat but the light on the dash stays on i replaced the battery a month later because someone said to try that it did not work i looked up recalls and you do have them for 2009 elantras only for certain manufacturers months i belive my vehicle was affected too

My passenger sideairbag light is on

I just bought this car a few days ago, the airbag light was on all the time even before i purchased, the ex-owner got the car from his grand-ma as a gift and he said it had been like that since he started to drive, i searched online to find out about the problem, noticed that it's a common problem faced by many hyudai elantra owners.

My son was driving to church on a city street and both driver and passenger airbags had deployed and seat belts stopped working.

My daughter was driving this car...."while driving the above car at 50-55 mph, i saw cars slamming on their brakes, i hit my brakes to avoid the cars, i hit a construction cement wall and then hit a car in front of me." major front end damage, hood buckled, bumper detactched, battery exploded with impact. The car make was unidentifiable due tofront end damage. Steering wheel air bag nor side bags and curtain did not deploy. Car was written as totalled as the estimated repair bill amounted to over $15,000 damage.

In january 2017 i was involved in a accident. I hit another car in the rear at 65 mph. The air bag failed to deploy i have been trying to get information from hyundia for over two years and they will not give any information they finally looked at my vehicle and said that the air bag failed to deploy because it was not designed to deployin that type of accident .i assume there is a manufacture design problem. I was traveling on the freeway and a young girl crossed four lanes of traffic right in front of me and i hit her dielectricin the rear at 65 mph. Hyundia would provide me any documentation to confirm there assessment i am a texas licensedinsurance appraiser and have a lot of experience with accident reconstruction. I believe this is a serious manufacture design problem and should be investigated. I have saved the car for inspection if needed. I was permanent disabled in the accident and hyundia wwill do nothing

Airbag sensor passenger seat assembly reads that there is someone sitting in passenger seat when no one is in seat.

Airbag warning light on the dash came on, was reset, and came back on constantly and reported to likely not work properly. It's expected to cost almost $2000 to replace. This began to happen only when i was driving and now is constant. Now it's essentially unsafe for anyone to sit in my front passenger seat. In addition, my tire pressure monitoring light has also come on constantly and the dealer has reportedly attempted to replace and reset and switch out the monitors in all of the tires and that indicator light has yet to be fixed. This started when the car was just turned on, stationary. I am starting to get a christmas tree looking dashboard. In addition, the door behind the driver's side has become stuck and won't open, due to reportedly allowing water in for the handle to rust. As well as about a year ago my driver's side visor just suddenly fell out of the ceiling while i was driving. This is literally the worst car i've ever owned.

My vehicle the elantra ( aprox sp 40mph) rear ended a chevy tahoe( aprx sp 30mph) my elantra was a total loss and my lower back was injured as well as my right hand. I had to be taken from the vehicle from ems and transported to the hospital. The occupant of the tahoe didn't receive any injury.this is the second accident in this vehicle that the air bags did not deploy .in 2011 my vehicle moving aprox 55mph struck 3 deer at once on the passenger front of the vehicle, my son experience a shoulder injury who was my passenger.

The light of the airbag used to turn on and off constantly i have taken it to the mechanic and finds no problem.now the car has a week with the air bag light on.i haven't had any colitions

I hit a deer on highway 890 in rotterdam ny, spun out of control and hit the guardrail, car had damage all around, the most damage was in the front resulting in a totaled vehicle, my whole front end is gone, and no airbags deployed,we were traveling doing about 60 miles per hour

Srs air bag light on. Gurnee hyundai and hyundai usa 1(800)633-5151 said this does not fall under nhtsa campaign id : 11v143000 because my car is a gls not an se. Srs is always on and dealer said sensor was contaminated just like the campaign stated could happen on 2009 elantras. Hyundai wants over $2000 to replace this sensor.

I drove my 2009 hyundai elantra gls (5 speed manual transmission) into my friend's driveway, came to a complete stop, after being stopped for apprixmatley 30 seconds i pulled the car out of gear, pulled up the hand brake, and turned off the car with the key. As i turned off the car/pulled out the key, the passanger and driver side airbags deployed while my passenger and i were sitting in the front seats. No severe injuries were sustained by my passenger or me. However, days later the loud explosion of the air bag deployment has left a ringing in our ears.it is important to understand that there was no front collision or abrupt stop that should have caused a deployment. The vehicle was at a stable zero speed. Also, i am the origional owner of the vehicle and the vehicle has never been involved in an accident or had the air bags deploy previously. The dealership has reported to me that the vehicle computer codes identified that the vehicle had a front collision, as well as a passenger air bag failure. The service rep agreed with me that there was clearly no impact and agreed with me that the front collision was some sort of false signal.i have filed a report with hyundai and it is under investigation, but i want to make sure that this is publically recorded due to the danger of the incident.

I took my vehicle to wilson hyundai for the recalls to be corrected. I was also having issues with an air bag light and a clicking noise in the steering wheel. I received a call telling me my steering column needed to be replaced because there was a short in the sensors to a module.i was then told that the sensor to my passenger seat had malfunctioned and that i needed to replace the entire bottom portion of the seat. They were wanting to charge me over $6,000.00 to repair these two issues.there are recalls on both of these issues:nhtsa 15v100000 addresses issues with the steering and the fix does not include or require the replacement of the entire steering column.the solution for this recall is to reprogram the computer. This does not address the clicking noise in the column where a gear/cog disintegrates over time.... A $12.00 part is estimated to cost over $500 in labor to replace. The issue with the air bag malfunctioning is addressed in 2009 hyundai elantra air bags: frontal: sensor/ control module nhtsa campaign #11v143000. I am being told that this issue is only for certain 2007-2009 elantras manufactured before nov 1, 2008.my vehicle was manufactured april 30, 2009 so they dont want to fix the problem even though it is the exact same problem addressed in recall. I would greatly appreciate it if you would look into this matter and expand the manufacturing date to address those of us whoown a 2009 manufactured after november 1, 2008 hyundai elantras whose air bags are malfunctioning.

Drivinghome with no passanger and passenger air bag deployed breaking windshield .

The indicator light for air bags came on and i have no idea what might have caused it as my wife and i are very careful with our assets...we are both 75.

I purchased a car from al at island auto sales, (631) 569-5050, 330 east main street, suite b, patchogue, ny 11772. 1-air bag light was/is on at all the time.2-car was out of alignment/worn inside tires all times.3-car transmission all of the sudden slows and then jumps, very frequently, while drivingal said he will fix the issues. He aligned the car, but is still pulling to the side.i took it to a mechanic shop and he said: "tires are worn out from inside and can cause serious damage. Airbag speed detection sensor is missing all together and can be very dangerous.i have contacted al, via phone, email and fax, and asked him to correct the two issues.he is not responding. That is why i am contacting you for help. I have a record of my communications with island auto sales.

The contact owned a 2009 hyundai elantra. While driving approximately 35 mph, the driver lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a ditch. During the crash, the vehicle sustained significant damage and was destroyed. The air bags did not deploy. The vehicle was towed. The driver sustained head trauma, which required medical attention. A police report was filed. The manufacturer and local dealer were not notified. The vin was not available. The failure mileage was 113,000.

The contact owned a 2009 hyundai elantra. While driving approximately 10 mph and making a right turn, the power steering seized without warning. As a result, the vehicle crashed into a medium concrete divider. The frontal air bags did not deploy. No injuries were sustained. A police report was filed. The vehicle was destroyed and towed to an impound yard. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 45,000.updated 6/8/15updated 10/06/2017

Airbag warning light on the dashboard would turn on when the passenger seat was moved forward. We received a recall on the issue and it "appeared" to fix the issue once completed, but the issue has been happening intermittently throughout the past four years. Today, the airbag warning light stays on at all times as of july 5, 2015.

In september 2017 my vehicle's airbag light came on (driver's side) and i called the dealership, made an appointment, and whatever they did corrected the problem until yesterday when the sensor flickered on and off during the day and eventually stayed on. I was told by the dealership if it came on again i would require a new drivers front impact sensor, which is quite costly. I did notice when it came on this second time i had been adjusting my seat prior to starting the car. In an attempt to see if this was something i could correct myself (online) i noticed a couple of blogs that mentioned nhtsa.

I was driving from workand my airbag light come on so i got it tested and they said it was my passenger seat is it safe to drivemy car

Air bag light went on and stayed lit after starting car, begining in october 2018.problem seemed intermittent; stayed off after start up when there wasweight in passenger seat. Took to local mechanic and a diagnosis was ran. Codes showed either the battery or the passenger air bag sensor. Had the 3 1/2 year old battery replaced to rule that out. No air bag light issue for about ten days, but problem began again. A few more weeks pass and the air bag light is on at all times.i understand that the air bags will not deploy when that light is on. I was told by hyundi that air bag problems would be paid by them, but not for related sensor issues.seems the sensor is equally as dangerous. No air bags, are no air bags. I bought the car(used) because of its high safety ratings for my two teens to drive.i think any item effecting the air bags should be recalled asap.thank you for your research into this issue.

Airbag light on dash stays illuminated.this is a safety issue many people are having and it should be a recall.

I was in a front end collision on 7/30/10. The car of the driver who hit me had her airbags deploy, while mine did not. The impact to my car was severe enough that the radiator support had to be replaced along with the bumper headlight and hood. I was going 20 - 25 mph and the other diver was doing approximately the same speed.

I was driving a new hyundai elantra and the front end of the vehicle started to veer back and forth.i was waiting for the abs to do what it was designed to do , it then pulled sharply to the right over an embankment and rolled over twice.my head hit the roof twice my neck and back were twisted, my left arm and shoulder were twistedand knees hit the dash i believe.when the car came to a stop there was glass everywhere including all over me.this car was equipped with front and side airbags and side air bag curtains.none of these safety devices were activated.my granddaughter and great grandson would have been in this car twenty minutes later, my granddaughter would not have survived this accident.the passenger side window was completely gone, shattered inside the car.i have asked hyundai of america to retrieve this vehicle to find out why none of these devices activated.this car was a total loss.i had just purchased it on october 27, 2009. Two weeks before this accident i was attempting to enter traffic,i was completely stopped, my foot on the brake.the car started to slowly move into the oncoming traffic no matter how hard i pressed on the brake.the road i was on was flat so it was not sliding. It should have been at a complete standstill.this car has very dangerous defects.it must be recalled and analyzed, or many people will be seriously injured or killed by these cars.thank you

On 09/17/2018 i woke up around 5 am to find the elantra fully engulfed in flames in the front end. It wasn't running, nothing left on, it had not been run for 4 hours so the engine should have been cold. No drivabilityproblems before. Police and fire department responded, put the fire out and stated that they saw nothing suspicious about the fire and that i should check on problems with hyundai. This car only had 70000 miles on it with a 10 year 100000 mile warrantee .i went to the dealer, they told me it was not covered without even looking at it. This car was cold, parked, nothing on, no keys in it, i don't see any reason it should have caught fire. It was a total loss. Thank you.

Backing out of a "fast food" drive thru lane , car did not turn, as normal, and struck a pole with the passenger side back panel. At the time i had no explanation for why car didn't follow the driveway curve. I have never as an adult had an at fault accident, and had no explanation for this. The part has been recalled on my car. I am on a fixed income & could not afford to get car repaired. I put report into hyundai, but need to know liability for "accident" & repairs. I called your phone line & was put in touch with hyundai & have case #[xxx]. This form won't allow me to enter "eps control unit".information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

The sensitivity on the alarm system is way off. I can't even set the alarm because if a semi drives passed it, the alarm goes off. If a cat jumps on it, the alarm goes off. If a strong breeze goes by and a twig drops, it goes off. Even though the local hyundai repair people know what is wrong, they still want to charge an arm and a leg. For something that isn't my fault. Just recalibrate your equipment. You have the computers to do so because your equipment has done it before. Maybe fix it?

When driving the vehicle, the eps light would arbitrarily turn on and go away when the ignition key is cycled off and back on. When the light comes on, it immediately becomes difficult to steer. The car reverts to manual steering mode and requires significant amount of effort to control. We have had the eps light turn on multiple times without warning while driving and putting us in dangerous, unsafe conditions on the road. Recently, the eps light is staying on and not going away. We visited the local dealer to report this issue and their diagnosis resulted in error codes related to the steering angle sensor-electrical, torque sensor main signal fault, ecu (brake system) hardware error, can time-out ems, and motor. When asked, they were not willing to perform an evaluation as per the technical service bulletin. They recalibrated the steering angle sensor and stated that if the problem reoccurs, we would need to return to the dealership to replace the steering column (part number 56310-2h250 as1) and pay full cost of repair (part and labor). This part number is listed as a replaceable item per the technical service bulletin. Please note that the dealership performed an eps s/w chk/ecu upgrade in 2015 when no issues were present and refuse to further assist when the issue is present when the recall campaign information letter in march 2015 clearly states that the final remedy has not been developed at this time. The diagnosis shows that a faulty part was installed by the car manufacturer, as stated in the recall, and the dealership is refusing to address the actual issue. Instead of solving the problem, they insist that we drive this potentially unsafe vehicle until the issue reoccurs. This is a safety related concern as there is no warning to when this issue will occur. Their recall notice states that the eps problems could result in an increased risk of a crash.

The abs module just started smoking today.smell of burning breaks. We was driving in the city and stopped at a mall and noticed the smoke coming from behind the driver side wheel.

Brake lights(all three) stopped working at the same time. Despite changing fuses and bulbs, they still will not work. Wires appear to connect properly.

My hyundai elantra touring 2009 eps light coming on.

On my way to work on august 8, 2013, i was on the freeway in the early morning rush hour traffic driving approximately 50 mph when my power steering went complete out and the eps light came.i took the vehicle to the hyundai dealership and after they inspected the vehicle, they indicated that it was a known issue and they had developed an update that they could upload it to to the computer responsible for the power steering in the vehicle.once the update was run, the vehicle was driving like normal. This morning on july 4, 2014, i went to start my vehicle and was driving again in the early morning rush hour traffic, and low and behold the eps light came on again.i will be contacting the dealership first thing in the morning and asking they inspect the vehicle.i doubt that this time an update will fix the problem as it has occurred twice now and expect that it will cost tons to fix the vehicle. This time i have done research on various hyundai forums and just googling the term "eps light hyundai elantra 2009" and found that many individuals are experiencing the same issue with the eps light.this is a hazard and is something that needs to be investigated.it could cause someone serious injury if their power steering unexpectedly goes out on the freeway or in the middle of a turn.

Panic alarm engages on its own (while parked) in driveway or work parking lot. Checked all doors, hood, trunk to ensure they were closed. Has not happened while car is in motion. When using key fob(manuf supplied) problem still persist. Press lock dr button(30-40 min later) alarm sounds, press unlock button(40-60 min later) alarm sounds or does not come on again. Press lock button to secure car, doors click twice but alarm engagement sound or light verification does not happen. This happens at random so i am sure if taken to dealer it will not happen or they will not confirm it is happening. I can not see any loose wires, blocked contacts or anything that might cause problem. Don't think it is the battery. Its has to be a short or a computer problem.

Car alarm activates at random when parked, incessant noise and work problem. Car gear stuck-stop lamp switch repaired-later recall, cd malfunction-ate disc, door sensor indicator lights stuck on, battery dies despite diagnostic tests on battery and alternator revealing no problems.

The contact owned a 2009 hyundai elantra. The contact stated that while driving approximately 30 mph, the trunk lid opened independently, the alarm activated, and all the doors locked and unlocked. The contact mentioned that there was smoke coming from inside the vehicle, which failed to shift into the park position. The fire department extinguished the fire and diagnosed the fire as an electrical fire. The vehicle was destroyed. A police report was not filed. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 105,000.

Esc switch failure causing brake lights to go off.

Started the car and motor/engine caught fire. It was the morning of 12/18/18. It was parked in front of my moms house (on the street).

I am concerned about why my vin was not put in with the recent recall of the abs and esc and has been shorted or drained battery and my vehicle has shut off and the electrical has caused problems with my break lights at one point. I have replaced my abs sensory 2 times already and the light still apears.

The contact owns a 2009 hyundai elantra. While driving approximately 45 mph, the power steering failed without warning. The contact stated that it was difficult to maneuver the vehicle safely. Taylor hyundai (located at 3233 washington rd, augusta, ga 30907, (706) 868-1200) was contacted by phone and the contact was informed that the vehicle was subjected to nhtsa campaign number: 15v100000 (steering). Additionally, while attempting to drive to the dealer to have the recall repair performed, the power steering failed. The vehicle was towed to the dealer and the recall repair was performed. After the failure recurred, the vehicle experienced several electrical issues pertaining to the interior lighting being activated when the headlight switch was turned to the on position. Additionally, the battery would drain overnight while the vehicle was parked. The vehicle was towed back to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the battery needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was informed of the failure and provided case number: 15936968. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 149,000.

Airbag sensor passenger seat assembly reads that there is someone sitting in passenger seat when no one is in seat.

The contact owns a 2009 hyundai elantra. While driving approximately 35 mph, the transmission exhibited hesitation. The failure recurred numerous times. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who flushed the transmission. The failure persisted after the service was performed.in addition, the horn failed to operate intermittently. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified. The approximate failure mileage was 20,000.

Engine start vibrating at low speed

Took car in for safety recall campaign 127 electronic power steering . Took over 1 month to get car back. The steering felt loose and worse than before. Went to 2 dealers both said steering is loose but safe. I did not feel safe. The regional manager at hyundai said there is noting they can do about it.updated 10/9/15 *lnan independent mechanic stated the steering was set to race car when the electronic power steering was change due to a recall that was issued. Updated 12/28/15.

My eps warning light came on one day and it hasn't turned off ever since. Several times while driving the power steering has turned off and i've had to pull over and restart the car to fix it. The steering wheel also makes a clunking sound when i turn it left and right.

I was driving home from work on sun night prior to my accident went around a curve and car started loosing control was able to regain control and headed home. Next morning was driving vehicle noticed esc light was on and would not reset even after shutting car off.driving down another road at approx. 40-45 mph went to negotiate a slight turn to the left when car started sliding out from under me tapped brakes trying to get them to grad and car under control but had no response car did a 180 and slammed in a telephone pole on passenger side vehicle seemed to hit with more force than 40 miles an hour. Thankfully i had no passenger because they may not have made it.

I am concerned about why my vin was not put in with the recent recall of the abs and esc and has been shorted or drained battery and my vehicle has shut off and the electrical has caused problems with my break lights at one point. I have replaced my abs sensory 2 times already and the light still apears.

Driving my car on the highway when out of no where my eps light came on and my steering locked up. I cannot turn the wheel and almost caused an accident. After pulling over i turned car on and off but the power steering will not return. I see that hyundai already issued a recall for this for my car year, but my vin wasn't included. The hyundai dealership wants to replace the entire steering shaft and column and says that it doesn't apply to the recall.

While driving on a rural road at low speed, vehicle shut down without warning. Rolled to the side of the road. Restarted vehicle but had no power steering. Both esc and eps lights were on dash display. Vehicle has remained in this condition since then.

Esc sensor malfunction caused one or more brakes to be applied andthe engine to shut down in heavy freeway traffic. Esc lamp remained illuminated on the instrument panel. I was required to put the car in neutral with a foot on the gas to keep the car running. This problem is the same explained in a recall of later models, the 2011-2012 models, recall #137. My year is not covered under the recall but has the same issues.

I was returning home one evening home about a week ago, and i was trying to parking my car in parking lot when theesc light appeared on dash board and the steering wheel locked.i could not park the car, so i put it in park and pulled out the car manual, afterreading it, i turned the ignition off and then turn it back on.the esc light went out and the steering was back and iwasthenable to park the car.the next day it happened twice before i was able to get on the highway and the only way i could correct it each time was turning off the ignition. At one point someone was coming out of a parking space and i had to try and move out of the waywith the steering wheel locked.i was scared and praying, that i get home safely. I took the car home and haven't driven it since.towed car to dealer and was told it needed a new power steering column and total cost with labor and tax was over $3,000.00 and not covered in the power train warranty.the car is barely used how could that be? they are dealers selling lemons as new cars. This car is just over 5 years old, no one shouldhave to pay out that type of money to replace parts so early in the life of the car.there should be a recall this is a dangerous problem and others are having the same issue with this make and model.

Esc switch failure causing brake lights to go off.

Receive service campaign notification to apply rust-proofing materials to underbody to arrest the corrosion process. Took car to local hyundai dealer for rust-proofing and was informed that the oil pan is rusted and needs replaced at a cost to me over $600 - i have written estimate from hyundai dealer. Informed that oil pan needs replaced because if it fails that oil will leak out and damage\ruin engine.told hyundai would not cover oil pan replacement under warranty as i am not the original owner even though mileage was under 100,000 at time of service. If i was the original owner, then it would have been covered under the 100,000 mile bumper to bumper coverage.i also have a 2010 hyundai elantra that received same service campaign notice for rust proofing underbody and oil pan is looking its like heading into same direction in need of replacement due to rust.this should not be happening to the oil pan even after 10 years of age.

The contact owns a 2009 hyundai elantra. The contact stated that after the vehicle was exited and parked in the owners garage, a fire erupted under the hood of the vehicle. A neighbor alerted the contact, the fire department extinguished the flames and provided an inspection report. A dealer had not diagnosed the vehicle yet to determine the cause of the fire. The insurance company was notified and was to investigate the vehicle. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The front of the vehicle was extensively damaged because of the failure so the contact was uncertain if the vehicle may be repaired. The vehicle was still parked at the owners residence. The manufacturer was notified to determine if they may investigate the cause of the fire. The approximate failure mileage was 74,000.

Was driving home on interstate and all of sudden all my dash lights came on without warning, car died. Pulled over and parked it . Didn't overheat or anything. I'm confused why now my car won't start . Or attempt to turn over . Help!!

I hit a deer on highway 890 in rotterdam ny, spun out of control and hit the guardrail, car had damage all around, the most damage was in the front resulting in a totaled vehicle, my whole front end is gone, and no airbags deployed,we were traveling doing about 60 miles per hour

Engine start vibrating at low speed

Sudden acceleration while in slow traffic.seemed like it went full rpm. I held the brakes and put it in neutral. Rpms came down and i drive off.kinda scary though.

2009 elantra gas pedal gets stuck under floor mat. What should ido?

Rear brake caliper problem! the rear's only have to be lubricated every 15k miles or annually. A manufacturing problem that should be listed on a recall problem to replaced with a redesign that does not require this lubraction. (please note: people and as myself do not know this, and do not do this. Therefore, the caliper becomes frozen, and the wheel is not braking when it should be. This is a safety hassard. The repair is a new caliper and disk. Conclusion: other manufactures do not have this problem.

Fuel injection and computer failure at approximately 5,600 miles. Car stalled in the middle of the highway without warning.

My car is accelerating even when i'm not pressing the gas and it shoots up when i shift. The rpms are going up to seven and eight thousand.

I have 2009 elantra, september 2017 i noticed a lag in the shifting always at 25-32mph most of the time i had to remove my foot from accelerator to manually shift. Whether i 'manually shifted' or stayed on the accelerator, there would always be a hard jerk during the shifting of that gear.on deaccereration, the car would always jerk on the downshift almost always at the same 25-32mph. I had to avoid highways due to safety concerns of merging due to the lack of acceleration.i decided to have the transmission serviced at a hyundai dealer. The day i picked my car up, i couldn't drive over parking lot speeds. I immediately drove it to the dealership i purchased an extended service warranty through and my transmission was replaced with a used elantra transmission with 72,000miles. The car shifted great for first 2months, now second transmission has been doing the exact same thing as original transmission.i have not reached out to service warranty company as it will just be a waste of time and effort.i can't afford to be without transportation for 5-7days and they do not offer rental or loaner car, just to get yet another used transmission just to have the problem reoccur.i would like hyundai's assistance to get a new transmission that will reduce safety issues and prolong the life of the car.

2009 hyundai elantra brand new bought.1. When the car is put on 'parking' on a hill, it slips back about couple of feet.it seem like gears were not working properly (not in position) because i felt and heard clicking noise that sounded like gears slipping by not being in correct position.2. It doesn't happen all the time but quite often when it's parked on a hill.about 1-2 times a week.when it happens and i try to see if it repeats, by going back and forth the car and put on parking again, it does not seem to repeat.3. I haven't done anything to fix the problem because it works after the slippage.but i am thinking to take it to the dealer as in worry of further transmission failure.only concern is that because it doesn't happen all the time, not sure if dealer will be able to fix it because they usually don't care unless they see them with their own eyes.

My son was driving to church on a city street and both driver and passenger airbags had deployed and seat belts stopped working.

The abs module just started smoking today.smell of burning breaks. We was driving in the city and stopped at a mall and noticed the smoke coming from behind the driver side wheel.

Driving car on wet roads at 45 mph, applied brakes to slow down for a street light and the abs was gone.car slid into the opposing lane and made a grinding noise due to the failure.then the eps light came on and the power steering was gone.close-call accident, very scary, and a lot of pain in my neck and arms from driving without the power steering.

This has happened to me 2 times, upon driving the car it randomly accelerates all on its own. Its as if someone is putting the pedal to the metal and trying to brake at the same time.. Slamming on the brakes only slows it down but not enough then i proceed to pull the emergency brake all the way which only assits a little.. So at this point i am at the complete mercy of a vechicle with a mind of its own.. Im stuck driving a car that wont stop for 3 exits in the breakdown lane and 2 seconds away from calling the state police for assistance... Putting it into neutral didnt stop it either it kept going!!! took it immediatly to the hyundai dealership and after putting 100 miles on it to try and recreate the issue ( which thats a very dangerous issue to recreate ) it didnt occor for them so i was handed my keys and told to drive off in a possible death machine with a mind of its own. I take my car for the scheduled maitinece and do my part so hyundai should not want thier loyal consumers driving such hazards.... Ive read several simailar stories and people have had no luck in getting this matter resolved thier soulution was to get a new car ... If only it was that easy.

I was driving down he road about 25 miles per hour and my bakes went outi was fortunate to be in slow moving area with little traffic. If i had been in the freeway it could have been fatal. Dealer showed me and explained that the manufacturer hyundai had put a plastic cover over the brake line. After years of salt and winter weather the enclosure of this brake line was rusting away unknowingly. Moisture, wet and winter eliminates were trapped within this plastic cover causing the brake line to rust.the car is now 8 years old so it took 8 years for this to happen.i fear there are many cars in this situation and the drivers do not know what is about to happen. The brake line broke at the rusted area and the brake fluid leaked out causing the loss of my brakes.the dealer permanentlyremovedthe plastic cover and sealed the brake line. This cover should not be covering the brake line, the dealer stated that the manufacturers intentions were good, but this was not a good way to protect the bake line for those who live inclement winter weather. Not only was i at risk and this could have cause a fatal situation for others. This repair also cost me $400.00.please do something this is not just about the money cost, but this was a terrifying situation. I was also very fortunate that there were no children in the car and i was moving slowly. Please help before someone is killed. I do not have the means to upload the invoice from the dealer, but will be happy to mail this to you.

I am concerned about why my vin was not put in with the recent recall of the abs and esc and has been shorted or drained battery and my vehicle has shut off and the electrical has caused problems with my break lights at one point. I have replaced my abs sensory 2 times already and the light still apears.

The contact owned a 2009 hyundai elantra. While driving 70 mph with the cruise control activated, the brakes malfunctioned. The contact swerved into the shoulder lane, turned off the cruise control, and engaged the emergency handbrake. The contact stated that the vehicle skidded and crashed into a light pole, and stopped in an embankment in a heavy brush wooded area. There were no injuries and a police report was filed. The vehicle was towed to a tow yard and deemed a total loss by the insurance company. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer for determination of the failure. The manufacturer was contacted hyundai motor america case #11488507. The failure mileage was 43,587. Updated 01/31/18

Car alarm activates at random when parked, incessant noise and work problem. Car gear stuck-stop lamp switch repaired-later recall, cd malfunction-ate disc, door sensor indicator lights stuck on, battery dies despite diagnostic tests on battery and alternator revealing no problems.

Traveling on interstate, using cruise control (as i had the day previously and for approx 150 miles this day) attempted to stop vehicle due to vehicles slowing down in front of me. Could not get out of cruise control - in fact, the vehicle accelerated -- and brakes did not work. Fortunately, i was in the right lane and was able to exit the highway without hitting the guardrail (approx. 20 feet away when i left the highway), traveled at a high rate of speed down a slight embankment and into a field, where fortunately there were no obstacles, and was able to stop the vehicle approx. 500 feet from leaving the highway. The engine was still running, now at a normal rate.i attempted to returnto the interstate but was not successful due to the embankment. I drove through my previous tracks in the field and was able to get onto a nearby exit ramp. The vehicle functioned normally after that. Please note, this vehicle has a manual transmission. I did not attempt to engage the clutch to put the transmission in neutral because i had both hands on the steering wheel trying to maneuver through the field, which was quite green, actively growing, and approximately 15 inches high. The crop scraped the underside of the vehicle, which is now in the shop waiting to have the new part replaced. The mechanic will check for damage on the underside. I am not sure if the vehicle stopped b/c the brakes finally kicked in or the vegetative growth slowed me down.

When there is snowfall and brakes are applied, there is a horrendous grinding sound-brakes lock up,will not work and i have gone through several intersections, and almost into parked cars, oncoming traffic and street poles. Thankfully no pedestrians.

Winter of 2009 i noticed that brakes on my 2009 hyundai elantra would lock up and not work whenever driving on loose wet snow.the car would just slide as if on ice and there would be no feeling as of pads on steel from the brake pedal.took car into fairfax hyundai in fairfax, va.they inspected brakes and deemed that nothing was broken.however they weren't able to test drive the vehicle under the same snow conditions.vehicle's brakes work fine when snow is plowed and compacted.on 16 december 2010 we had similar snowfall and vehicle behaved the same dangerous way.this time however i was able to clear the brakes of snow by rapidly stomping on the brake pedal until i could feel pad on steel and stop the vehicle from sliding.haven't bothered to take vehicle in to fairfax hyundai since they found nothing last year.have sent notification, however, to hyundai usa and to consumer reports.i don't want anyone to be hurt by this brake failure in snowy conditions.at the least drivers should be alerted that they can stop the vehicle by rapidly stomping on the brakes to clear the snow that seems to build up between the pads and the rotors.

This car was recalled twice forintermittent eps issues but the problem is still ongoing, it never went away. Today i was almost in a car accident because it was hard to turn the steering wheeel.i was turning right to get on the road and loss steering and went too far out into the opposite lane.

The contact owns a 2009 hyundai elantra. The contact stated that the steering wheel made a clunking noise while driving and while stopped at a traffic light. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to ebersole hyundai (2101 cumberland st, lebanon, pa 17042) and was informed that the gear coupling needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 80,000.

The eps light went on and i lost power steering. Luckily i was not on the highway or i could have been severe. Hyundai did a recall for this issue back in 2015 but it was just a system update for the steering module but it seemslike a short term solution. I have found over a hundred complaints where other customers are having th same safety issue and i really think hyundai needs to do something about it. The steering in the '09 elantras are unsafe and will eventually possibly kill someone.

Lost power steering. First time it was reset. This time i am informed it needs steering column. Cost of $2700 car was parked in driveway.

I brought my 2009 elantra (driven less than 42,000 miles) to a local hyundai dealership mid july because eps was light on and i had been notified of a recall pertaining to the power steering system.the recall was reported addressed through software reset/update and eps light was off when i picked the car back up.earlier this month the eps light came back on and i noted a brief clicking/knocking sound with temporary increased resistance as i turned the steering wheel in either direction both while moving or at a stop.the car was reassessed at the dealership aug 23rd, i was told that an "internal failure of steering column" had been identified and that i would need to replace the full steering assembly for an estimated $2,244.40.i asked for further details regarding the failure and was informed that the steering coupler needs replacement but also that the "hologram sensor" has malfunctioned, necessitating a full steering assembly replacement, and that this is unrelated to the previously serviced power steering recall.i have not had the repair yet but am warned that the car is at risk of unpredictable power steering failure.

While driving on a rural road at low speed, vehicle shut down without warning. Rolled to the side of the road. Restarted vehicle but had no power steering. Both esc and eps lights were on dash display. Vehicle has remained in this condition since then.

After having my power steering fixed at the local hyundai dealership because of the recall, the steering wheel began to make a clicking sound when it was turned in either direction. When i called hyundai, the mechanic was able to tell me exactly what it was without even looking at my car but still wanted 110 dollars just to inspect it. Informed me that the issue, which is the coupling device, is not covered under warranty from recall. My steering wheel never made this sound before the recall and if this is such a common problem that he's able to tell me what's wrong without even looking at the car, why is it not covered under warranty? dealership wants 400 dollars to fix the coupling device on top of the 110 dollars to inspect it. Local mechanix charged me 15 dollars to inspect it and verified that it is the coupling device. Informed me that he felt it should be covered under warranty.

My daughter received a shock upon placing her hand to the steering wheel. Thinking nothing of this she started the car and started to back out of the car port. When she needed to turn the steering wheel in order to exit the driveway the steering did not move or respond. Looking at the dash, a warning light was on "eps". The owner's manual had little to nothing to say about the eps warning. I decided to look at all the fuses, first inside the car and then in the engine compartment. None of the fuses were blown. I replaced the fuse compartment covers and started the car. The eps warning light went out this time and normal steering abilities are okay. What if this "shock" had happened when travelling at a high rate of speed? in the old days when power steering failed the driver could still turn the wheel with great effort, however i could not even turn the steering wheel 1/2 inch in either direction.

Making hard left turn after backing out of driveway, power steering fails.restarted car to restore power steering.also failed on a rough road with no turn.reproduced problem with a hard left turn while standing still.in all cases, restarting the car resolves the problem.

In the last 2 weeks, the eps light has come on my dashboard 3 times, accompanied by the power steering failing. The first time it happened, i was in the middle of an intersection, turning left, and my power steering failed. The second time i was in my driveway, luckily not yet pulled out into the busy street on which i live. The third time was just today on the highway, and as i was going 65 mph, the power steering failed. The only way i've found to "fix" it is to turn off my car and start it again. Had i been going over the bridge near my house where there is no shoulder to pull onto where i could restart my engine, today i would have been unable to steer around the curves of the highway. This is not just a minor problem. This is a safety liability on the part of the manufacturer and needs to be addressed. I have read about many other people with the same car having this issue and hyundai doing nothing about it. So far, only a handful of 2015 sonatas have been recalled for the exact same issue, but nothing has been done about the elantras. I have contacted hyundai regarding this, and they say that my vin is not part of a recall, even though it clearly has the same problem as the recalled sonatas occurring repeatedly, and therefore i must absorb the cost of whatever it will take to remedy this problem. Again, this is a liability on hyundai's part, and they should be responsible for fixing it at no cost to the consumer. Thank you for your time.

The contact owns a 2009 hyundai elantra. The contact stated that there was a sudden power steering failure while driving the vehicle. The vehicle was repaired by the dealer in less than three months per nhtsa campaign number: 15v100000 (steering), but the failure recurred. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and provided no solution other than to have the contact take the vehicle to the dealer for further testing. The failure mileage was not available.

Eps light came on dash 3-1313/2019-19 .filled out vin # online and was told vehicle was covered under recall and to make appointment at bob king dealership for friday at 5 pm 3-15-19 in winston salem n.c.so we drove 27 miles one way to have it checked out . 1 hour later was told it was fixed . Got in vehicle to leave and noticed light was still on and went back in to tell them . Was told to bring back next day 3-16-19 sat at 8 am . Was there when opened up and after approx.1 hr. Was told i would have to pay $120.00 per hr. To have it checked out , so we agreed to have it checked out and was told it would cost $ 2390.00 for replacement of part that is or should be covered under recall .tech said he would see if hyundai would cover cost and would let us know the following mon. Or tues. . did not hear from bob king till we called them back on 3-21-19 and was told they have not heard from hyundai . Called them back 3-28-19 and was told hyundai would not cover replacement . That is two trips each way . I do not know if hyundai or bob king is responsible , but now the vin # is not under recall . I suspect under handed dealings from oneor the other or both . I could understand if car has been fixed under recall before , but was told this vin # was valid and now the hyundai coorp. Refuses to honor their recall ! so far light is only sign of problem, but steering may lock up why vehicle is being driven and possibility of an accident . Recall # 127

Today my steering wheel was very "loose" to the touch. In other words it was far easier to turn the steering wheel than usual. It seemed that i was required to turn the steering wheel much more than usual to even make the simpliest of turns.i recently had air conditioning work done by a local auto shop. It seems very coincidental that all of a sudden my steering mechanism is working so poorly that my life may be in danger.

The contact owns a 2009 hyundai elantra. While the vehicle was in reverse, the steering wheel became difficult to turn. The contact had to turn the steering wheel with force. In addition, the electronic power steering indicator illuminated while the failure occurred. The failure was experienced several times. However, when the contact restarted the engine, the steering wheel regained normal function. The vehicle was taken to joe machens hyundai (1300 vandiver drive, columbia, mo 65202, (573) 474-7400) where it was diagnosed that the steering motor failed and the steering column needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer stated that the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 15v100000 (steering). The failure mileage was 182,000.

2009 hyundai elantra.consumer writes in regards to electrical power steering recall.the consumer stated it took the dealer more time to fix the recall, than what was stated. Recall # 15v100000.

Cost of $1600.00.per pearson, this is a safety issue and vehicle shouldn't be driven until repaired.need information on any and all recalls on this vehicle for this safety issue.

The contact owns a 2009 hyundai elantra. The contact stated that the vehicle was repaired per nhtsa campaign number: 15v100000 (steering) in 2015. Four years later, while driving at an unknown speed, the eps indicator illuminated and the steering lost power and became stiff. The vehicle was shut off and restarted, but the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken tolynnes hyundai (877-358-9715, located at 401 bloomfield ave, bloomfield, nj 07003) where it was determined that since the recall repair was previously performed, the contact would have to pay for the repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and did not assist. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 90,000.

It happened twice: aroundjune 2018,and today 12/20/2019. Today, while driving at normal speed at 40 miles/hr in a city road , suddenly the epswarning light is illuminated, then the steering wheel was locked up. I almost got hit by other cars. Luckily i managed to go to theside road, turned off the car and turned on again , then the the car was working normally. Back in 2018,this eps warning light happened, same thing. Steering wheel was locked , restartedthen the car working fine , i thought it was a battery then i changed it and i thought may be the battery caused it.

When driving the vehicle the power steering suddenly turns and stays off until the car is turned off and is allowed to sit for a while (hour or more). This may put me in danger. It has happened a number of times. If i am turning or driving on a curve (highway of city street) the steering wheel will suddenly want to go straight. It seems to be a common problem with the car. I was told by the dealership thatthe steering angle sensor built into the eps column assembly is at fault and to fix it the whole column needs to be replaced.

The contact owns a 2009 hyundai elantra. The contact stated that the vehicle was hesitant upon accelerating from a stop sign. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnosis. Additionally, the steering wheel detached from the vehicle while parked. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 53,000. Updated 3/12/14

While driving on the freeway, i tried to steer off to the left to avoid a car from hitting me from the right. This led to the steering wheel locking and the car spinning out. I tried to get control of the wheel but could not. The car continued to spin until it crashed into the guard railing, smashing the right side and right front. The right front wheel was dented into the car making it undriveable.

A steady "eps" light came onmy hyundai elantra 2009.the first time this happened was about 9/2018. There were no noticeable malfunctions while driving.a few weeks later, however, thelight started flashing when i started the car, and when trying to reverse from driveway, the steering wheel became very hard and i initially could not turn it. When i turned the car off and on, i was able to move the wheel and the light went off. However, a week of two later, i was driving on the highway when the light came on again, this time flashing, and the steering wheel kind of got stuck. I could hardly handled it.that situation was very scary.then, the light became steady, and i was able to steer the wheel without difficulty. But last week, i was driving on the highway, and same thing happened -the steering wheel became too hard to turn.on 12/15/2018, i took the car to hyundai service and a diagnosis was done (paid $128.00 refundable only if repairs were needed and done at their shop). My car has 79,909 miles, but i told it is no longer under warranty because it is past 60k miles). The diagnosis was an "internal failure of motor driven power steering motor," whichwould cost $2,188.21 to repair. This car had been recalled twice for power steering issues (recall 127 electronic power steering software and campaign "elantra and sonata steering coupling".in searching the internet, i have found multiple complaints about power steering malfunctions on 2009 hyundai elantra and later models, as well as other hyundai vehicles, which had also involved malfunctions while driving on the highway.this is a very serious, life-threatening malfunction, which should be promptly investigated.i hope hyundai and brand/maker vehicles with this problem are recalled and repaired before a life is lost due to this malfunction.

The contact owns a 2009 hyundai elantra. While driving 35 mph and attempting to make a right turn, the power steering failed and the esc indicator illuminated on the instrument panel. The contact maneuvered the vehicle to the side of the road where the vehicle was turned off and restarted. The contact stated that the power steering returned to normal. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, but was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 52,000.

02/22/2018 "eps" light came on in my car and now when i drive it makes it very difficult to steer.i did some research and i can see that there is a recall for this same issue back in 2015.does that still cover my car?

Eps light came on, couldn't steer it.i see there is no recall on this per my vin#, but noticed there are bulletins pertaining to this as a safety issue for my year car.not sure what that means.

We have had the recall for the eps repaired a few years ago. A few years later the eps came on again and almost crashed the car/no power steering. We again took it to a dealer in laurel, md and they said we had another recall and they downloaded the fix/no charge. Well about 2 years later/today the eps came on and again almost crashed the car. It is intermittent, i was able to get it home no problem. We made an appointment to a bowie, md dealer who can't get to it for 10 days! we are concerned it is the same recalled issue and can not be fixed. Now we are afraid to drive the car in fear there is no solution and we can not afford another car at this time. Please help! thanks! regards, [xxx]information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

The contact owns a 2009 hyundai elantra. The contact statedthe front tires were wearing prematurely and in an uneven manner. The inside of the tires exhibited more wear than the outside and the vehicle was taken to the dealer. The dealer advised that the alignment was off and performed an alignment on the vehicle. The front tires were also replaced. Within 5,000 miles the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer where the contact was awaiting repairs. The failure mileage was 10,000 and the current mileage was 26,000. Updated 10/27/10. *lj

Eps light came on.

March 2012 the eps indicator light came on and the steering became very difficult.this happened intermittently at first, very scary when driving, and would sometimes resolve itself if the car was restarted.the dealership performed an update and repaired a loose connection, which seemed to correct the problem. In jan 2013 the eps light came on & again steering became almost impossible. This time the dealership recommended replacing the steering column & motor to the tune of $2,312.as this is 1/4 the total value of the car, it seems astronomically high.as a highly paid public school teacher, i cannot afford this and am forced to drive the car as it is. I contacted hyundai customer service who said there was nothing they could do as my warranty had expired.with so many complaints of this type, i am surprised hyundai has not looked into it.i will never buy another hyundai.

The contact owns a 2009 hyundai elantra. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the eps and the esc warning lights illuminated. In addition, the steering wheel was extremely difficult to turn. The vehicle was restarted and the vehicle resumed to normal. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who repaired the vehicle under nhtsa campaign number: 15v10000 (power steering). However, two weeks after the vehicle was repaired under the recall the failure recurred. The manufacturer was notified of the failures. The failure mileage was 83,000.

The contact owns a 2009 hyundai elantra. The contact stated that while driving at a low speed, the steering wheel became very difficult to turn. The contact had to apply force to the steering wheel in order to steer the vehicle. The electric power steering (eps) warning light illuminated. The failure recurred on numerous occasions. The vehicle was taken to a dealer who diagnosed that the steering column needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The vehicle was previously repaired under nhtsa campaign number: 15v100000 (steering). The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 64,900.

I was driving home from work when my eps light came on and my power steering completely went out.at a stop light i turned my car off and turned it back on.the light went off and the power steering was restored.a couple of minutes later the light came back on and the steering again went out.i was on a busy street and was very nervous when attempting to turn.when i made it home i looked in the owner's manual and it stated if the eps light came on during normal operation to take it to the dealer.i drove the car to the nearest hyundai dealer and left it overnight.the next morning i was informed that my entire steering column/eps motor had to be replaced and the cost was $2,400.my car is just over 5 years old and only has 49,000 miles on it.to have to replace something this major, this early in the life of the car, was a huge shock to me.when researching the matter online i saw multiple examples of the same exact thing happening to other owners of the 2009 hyundai elantra.i asked the dealer if there was a recall for this and they informed me there was not.this is very troubling to me as something as serious as losing your steering unexpectedly is a huge safety hazard and needs to be remedied.

Lost power steering while driving. Extremely hard to steer. Repair estimate more than car worth it seemscalled hyundai, they said i am out of luck as there are no recalls on this condition. Many many complaints anout this condition online however.

The contact owns a 2009 hyundai elantra. The contact stated that while driving at 35 mph, the steering wheel ceased without warning. The contact managed to veer to the shoulder of the road turn the vehicle off and back on as the eps warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to (myrtle beach hyundai 1887 us-501, myrtle beach, sc 29577 (843) 626-3657) where it was diagnosed and determined that the electric power steering (eps) needed to be replaced. The dealer recalibrated power steering module however the failure recurred. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure however, no further assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 77,300.

Steering column problem started 2 weeks ago. Every time that you steer or move the steering wheel a knocking sound resonates from the power steering column. I have checked if i was having a problem with the tie rod ends but both are fine. I trace back the problem going from the firewall heading towards up and i have isolated the sound coming form the electronic power steering (eps) motor just right above the universal joint. The steering once seize to operate when park but i have not duplicated it yet since that incidence. No codes have reflected on the dashboard. This is a vehicle being driven by a senior adult woman.

Please note that my vehicle has already been serviced at the dealership for nhtsa campaign 15v100000 (hyundai recall 127). While driving between 34-45 mph, i heard a subtle click from either my steering column or behind the dash, which was immediately followed by illumination of the eps warning light and complete loss of power steering assistance.the vehicle became very difficult to steer, and remained in this condition until i reached my destination , which was about another 30 minutes worth of driving time.i imagine that some younger/weaker drivers might not be able to physically steer the car while in this condition, but i was able to manage.the car was left in a parking lot for about 8 hours, at which point upon starting the engine, the eps warning light turned off and power steering was again fully functional.the dealership said my car had already been serviced for the power steering recall 127, and it would cost $120 to investigate. I did not bring the vehicle in for this diagnostic.the problem appears to be an intermittent problem, and has not yet recurred.

Comments: my eps electronic power has ceased to function twice. Once a year ago - i got into start the car and the eps light came on and there was no steering - could not turn the wheel. I reported to hyundai and was ignored. There are others reporting the same thing on the internet. Tonight, we came out of the theater late late show - and the same thing occurred. A year ago- i put the key in and out 3 times the light went off and the steering came back. Tonight it did not.i believe to be electrical in nature and a result of a faulty design.the only thing we did tonight differently than before was to turn on the rear overhead light before going in the theater.

The contact owns a 2009 hyundai elantra. While driving 20 mph, the steering seized and the eps warning indicator illuminated on the instrument panel. The vehicle was serviced under nhtsa campaign number: 15v100000 (steering), but the remedy failed to repair the vehicle. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 87,000.

The contact owns a 2009 hyundai elantra. The contact stated that while driving 70 mph, the steering pulled toward the right on its own. No warning lights illuminated during the failure. The vehicle was taken to the dealer five times to be aligned. The failure continued. The failure mileage was 300 and the current mileage is 23,000. Updated 7/18/12 updated 07/25/12

While driving on the road, completely lost power steering.tried to turn down the street where i live and almost didn't make the turn.the eps light is on and will not go off, there is no power steering.i let the car sit in the driveway over the weekend, started it up and there is still no power steering.

The contact owns a 2009 hyundai elantra. The contact had taken the vehicle to a dealer to have her a/c unit serviced; but upon return of the vehicle, the contact stated that her eps(electronic power steering) warning light had illuminated on the instrument panel. The contact stated that her steering wheel would jerk upon turning the steering wheel in either direction. The dealer was notified of the matter and informed her that the warning light was illuminated prior to service. The contact contested that claim and stated that she would have brought the warning light to their attention if the light had illuminated prior to service. The manufacturer was notified of the matter and gave the contact a case number. The contact was also notified that her vehicle was placed under nhtsa campaign number: 15v100000(steering) back in 2015; however, the recall was serviced that same year. The vehicle had yet to be repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 37,000.

Front end making a noise upon a slow to medium front or back-up turn. Also, at various times the esp light came on and i lost power steering(very dangerous while on the road at speed). Also, the front tires were wearing very unevenly(rear tires fine).they replaced the steering angle sensor and steering shaft assembly on 24dec 2010 with mileage at 35,791. They offered to sell me two front tires, alignment and balance at a steep price, i declined and had my mechanic do it for less. Istrongly feel that the defect caused my tires to wear out too soon. This is a potentially fatal defect because if it happens while at highway speed you will suffer injuries. This is my third hyundai, the two werefine.

The manufacturer was contacted. The failure mileage was 71,000 and the current mileage was 71,243.

The car's key pulls out of the ignition when the gear is still in drive position, while the engine is on or off mode. This creates a safety issue, if unintentionally the driver turns off the engine and pulls out the key off the ignition, while the gear is still on drive position. This can make the car moves while unattended. Also, i had an incident where the key fell off the ignition while driving the vehicle. The vehicle is hyundai elantra 2009 with 78,051 miles.

The contact owned a 2009 hyundai elantra. While driving approximately 10 mph and making a right turn, the power steering seized without warning. The vehicle was destroyed and towed to an impound yard. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 45,000.updated 6/8/15updated 10/06/2017

As i was driving the vehicle the power steering stopped working making it very difficult to maneuver vehicle.i took it to dealer and they said it was either a software update needed or if that doesn't work the steering column.will need to be replaced..the software update was installed and appeared to work. Approximately one week later as i was turning a corner and it went out again nearly causing me to have an accident. It nowneeds a steering column which would cost around $3000.00.i contacted consumer department at hyundai corporate offices requesting a warranty decision review as i am unable to financially have this work done at this time.i told them it should be a recall since it is a very serious issue and sure to cause an accident.i went on line and there are multiple statements from others with this vehicle that have the same issues with the power steering failing while driving. I feel this is a very serious situation and a recall should be on this vehicle before injuries are caused.the response from hyundai consumer department was they will not include it in the warranty and they are unable to help me.

My teenage daughter nearly got into an accident when the power steering completely stopped working while she was driving.we see that hyundai has had recalls on the torque sensor/steering column but informed us that our car was not covered under recall. Hyundai advised our hyundai dealership to completely replace electric power steering column and eps column in order to insure safe driving.this cost us $2,260.75 on a car with only 28,000 miles. We cannot believe that hyundai is not standing by its product and only doing "selective recall".we avoided a very serious accident which would have resulted in dire consequences for hyundai. Please help us expand this recall and recoup some of our expense. We will never purchase another hyundai.a company that manufacturers and sells dangerous vehicles should not be allowed to continue.

Eps light is on, i have absolutely no power steering. I almost ended up in a wreck because i was unable to properly make a turn. I have been in contact with consumer affairs since march 2018 and not getting anywhere, but a response of"we have forwarded your complaint to a case worker"i have serveral emails i have sent and my call record. I have gone to a dealership, they want to replace the entire steering column at over a $2,000 cost to me. Then proceeded in trying to sell me another car. I will never buy another hyundai, customer service is terrible. I work for a kia dealership and i understand recalls. If i were to receive a customer satisfaction survey, it would not be a good rating. I am not pleased with hyundai...the recall was only a reprogramming of the steering software...that did not work for my hyundai. If i don"t get some kind of resolve in this matter i will be obtaining legal counsel. Replacement of the steering column (which is recommended by hyundai dealership) should be included in the recall. The link at the bottom says when did this happen...12/05/17 it will only let me enter today's date.

I see hyundai sonata are being recalled for a steering problem.i suggest someone check 2009 elantras.i find the steering over respondswhen i have attempted to avoid another vehicle that cut me off, etc.ifi need to quickly steer hard, i feel the vehicle fishtales or turns in unexpectedways.i have driven for over 35 years, in many different cars.this is theonly car that does this.i was told the problem with my new car was thetire/wheel balance.it is better, but still something that i would like to seeinvestigated by knowledgeable, independent professionals.much thanks

Driving at a speed of about 45mph when the eps light came on and it became hard to steer the car. I did a search to find many complaints for the same problem, but no recalls as of yet. This problem needs to be addressed before a life is lost! not after! i am currently at the dealership and afraid to hear what it will cost me cause i'm no longer under warranty. Hyundai needs to do right to the customers or risk developing a bad rap.

The electronic steering dampener went on my 2009 hyundai elantra.the dealership said it had been under recall but they only did a computer reset.the steering wheel started to make a clicking noise.when i took it to the mechanic the next day the power steering went out.the rubber part had completely disintegrated.this is a known issue and hyundai would not cover my 2009 elantra with only 36000 miles on it.it was only covered for 5 year 50000 miles.the picture shows the new part on the left and on the right is the old part.the actual part was $11.75 but labor cost 585.00 due to the entire front interior of the car had to be removed.i would like a refund.

I have been in contact with hyundai customer service about this issue since june 5th and i still have not gotten anywhere. Description of events leading up to accident on or about may 14, 2018, i noticed the eps light was lit up on my dashboardon may 21, 2018 my car was serviced by __________ to correct recall #127- eps module failure. I was not aware of the other two recalls until the dealer informed me that day!when i left the dealership the car was fine and the eps light was no longer lit up.on may 25th/26th i noticed that the eps light was lit up again on my dashboard. I called _____________ to let them know about this and they simply told me to bring the car back in to be looked at. Date, location and details of accidenton tuesday, may 29th, 2018 i was driving in the vicinity of ______________. It was around 7:00 pm. I was the last of several cars in my lane, our green light was turning yellow so i began to reduce my speed. I glance down then look up to see that the car ahead, a couple of feet in front of me had come to a premature complete stop. I tried to change/switch lanes but did not have the ability to steer and/or turn or move the wheel. As a result, i had no choice but to forcefully hit the brake and came to an abrupt stop, stopping short which caused me to bang directly into the rear end of the car in front of me.as it stands right now the eps light is still lit and i have no choice but to continue to drive my carto get to and from work. I notified hyundai about this and they still have not gotten back to me since my original complaint on june 5th and they have not offered me the use of a loaner car for the time being. I warned them that i was afraid i would have another accident and they are still not taking action.

While driving approximately 60 mph on i-35, my electronic power steering went out. I took it to dealership and i was told the whole steering column needs to be replaced in order to remedy the problem. The cost is $2,400.00. The car is only five years old, three years old when it occurred. I have been dealing with driving the car without power steering for over a year and a half. I cannot afford a new car, nor can i afford the cost to replace the steering column. I have heard of several other people who own hyundai vehicles that have had the same problem. It would be nice if hyundai would replace the steering column for me with no charge due to the fact the car is not very old, i'm still making payments on it, it has never been wrecked and i'm not the only one that has had this issue with their product. Thank you

Steering wheel is clunking and the eps light is constantly on. It initially blinks when vehicle is turned on and then stays on shortly after. There have been many other recalls regarding steering wheel eps related faults and the steering suddenly stiffening up, causing loss of control on the vehicle either on local roadways or even on the highways (not only on the elantra, but also on sonata models from this manufacturer.)

The contact owns a 2009 hyundai elantra. While driving 55 mph, the steering wheel became loose and the contact lost control of the vehicle. The vehicle spun around and crashed into a median on the driver side and struck a guardrail. A police report was filed. The driver sustained injuries to the head and ribs. The front passenger sustained chest pains. The driver and the passenger both received medical treatment. The vehicle was towed to a collision center. The cause of the failure was not diagnosed. Only the front driver and passenger side air bags deployed. The manufacturer was notified. The approximate failure mileage was 62,000.

The contact owns a 2009 hyundai elantra. While driving 55 mph, the power steering seized and the electronic power steering and electronic stability control warning lights illuminated. The power steering assist failed and the steering wheel seized.the contact spoke to the dealer, but was not able to have the vehicle inspected. The failure and the current mileages were 113,153.

I have seen many other complaints online about this. My steering has play in it, and makes a clicking noise when slightly turned. I'm told there is a plastic cog in the power steering unit that breaks. It does this anytime the steering wheel is turned, regardless of whether the vehicle is moving.

The contact owns a 2009 hyundai elantra. The contact stated while driving approximately 10 mph out of a parking space, there was a complete loss of power steering. The engine was turned off and upon restarting, the vehicle resumed normally. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer for diagnosis where a trouble code was detected. The power steering software was updated. The manufacturer was notified of the problem. The approximate failure mileage was 79,384.

Power steering keeps turning off even when the car is running in park. Have to keep pulling over to turn car off to reset it. I travel major highway on a daily basis and fear i will cause an accident due to steering locking up.

Driving 25 mph the eps indicator light came on and i had no power steering so i pulled over and after turning the car off it worked fine. After many more of the same deals the steering would not come back.i took it to the dealer and they had to replace the steering column to fix the problem.

I brought my car into a hyundai dealership because the eps light was on and the power steering was not working.this started happening intermittently over the past few months.at first they updated the software and it worked for a week.when it happened again, they said that i needed a new steering column at the cost of $2200.00.on 8/1/2015, i brought my car to a different dealership for a recall on this specific problem.recall 127.supposedly, this problem was taken care of, but it was just postponed.i believe the current incident is related to the recall.i would like hyundai to pay for the repairs.there are many complaints about this that i found in the internet.

09' elantra gls approx. 66k miles 6/18/2020. I lost power steering and the eps light came on while accelerating through a light that had just turned green. Ever since then i randomly loose power steering and the eps light comes on. I've lost power steering while driving, right after shifting into gear (reverse and drive), and after i start to accelerate from a stopped position. There does not seem to be a pattern. The weather has been in the 70s/80s. Vehicle is all stock, fairly low mileage and has undergone routine maintenance. The previous owner reported this same issue at 35k miles which hyundai fixed by adjusting the steering angle sensor. That wasn't a permanent fix, as im learning the best permanent fix is to replace the whole steering column.

I was driving down the road, coming back from gym, when my eps light went on--seconds after the light appeared, my power steering shut down.i struggled with the steering wheel, thenran off the road afterpulling with both arms to pull the car over.i eventually drove the car home with my hazards at a very slow speed since i had great difficulty turning the car etc. I can't imagine what would have happened hadi been on the highway. I called hyundai (customer connect ) my case number is[xxx]. They have only responded that they will not reimburse me any of the 2400 dollars it cost to replace.information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

My eps warning light came on one day and it hasn't turned off ever since. Several times while driving the power steering has turned off and i've had to pull over and restart the car to fix it. The steering wheel also makes a clunking sound when i turn it left and right.

The contact owns a 2009 hyundai elantra. The contact stated while driving 35 mph, the vehicle lost power steering assist and it became difficult to steer the vehicle. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure and declined to offer any additional assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 34,900.

Eps system failed.repairs included whole new steering column.

Steering wheel function is strained and a clicking noise of the steering wheel while the car is in motion on turns. Nhtsa records steering electric power assist system recall no 15v100000 but the hyundai claims no recall

The electronic power steering stopped working as the eps indicator light came on.i had difficulty steeringso i pulled over and restarted the car which temporarily fixed the problem.the rest of the way home (apprx 5 miles) it stopped working about 6 more times.again this morning (5/20) on the way to work it stopped working.each time it stops i am able to temporarily "fix it" by restarting the engine.to be safe i'm keeping off the highway. Prior to this incident my eps indicator light would come on periodically but without the eps itself failing.during these prior incidents my mechanic couldn't find a problem and turned the light off, but found it troubling.i took it to hyundai at one point and they claimed nothing was wrong and turned the light off.

My daughter and i purchased this car august 30th 2013. In good faith from joyce koons in manassas virginia.less than 90 days after purchase the vehicle has lost power steering ability twice.on nov 11th the car was serviced(total charge $172.50) and now the entire column shaft assembly needs replacing part # 56310-2h50. $2105.56 + parts $600.00 + alignment $99.95my inquiry is two fold #1is there any history of this being a faulty "part" on this vehicle?#2 the human element (because i know i human will be reading this) we purchased an extended warranty on this vehicle because my daughter's father passed away and he always took care of the vehicles. Now we are being told that this isn't a covered part even though steering issues are supposed to be covered.

Steering wheel sticking while driving at any speed. I was told today steering column needs to be replaced and possibly the rack too. In addition, hearing a noise while turning or backing up before warranty expired and took the car in. First time, stated bad axle and replaced. Second time, still heard noise again and told everything is fine at 53,000 miles. Third time, at about 67,000 told it was the shaft due to being worn out along with the steering column and possible the rack too. I see several steering column complaints for this make and model. I don't understand why this is not being looked into?

After having the car in the shop, for stearing recal, the car still while driving the power stearing goes out.

While the vehicle was in motion the power steering failed. The eps light turned on and the steering wheel became difficult to turn. The mechanic i took it to said the power steering motor failed and that the entire unit needs to be replaced.

Had car in shop for power steering / eps light issue on 3/21/14 (81431 miles).they did an update #c1290 to recalibrate the esp and had to do a front wheel alignment too.the power steering went out again while i was on a busy road around 4pm. I took it back to the hyundai dealership on 4/8/14 and they re-did the update #c1290.they told me that it is an electrical 'shortage' causing the problem and i would need to replace the entire steering column shaft assembly - costing $1600.i saved up the money and called to get the work done (5/8/14) and the price went up to $1920 now!!!!they told me they can put in a used steering column for $350 - but would only guarantee the work/part for 90 days.meanwhile i am driving without power steering causing more injury to my arms and neck and very difficult to drive & dangerous in traffic. The sonata was recalled for the same issues....why won't they recall the elantra's also?

I was driving home last night in my 2009 hyundai elantra and my eps light came on and it was very difficult to steer the car.i had it towed in to the alan vines automotive in jackson, tn and they said there was nothing wrong with it.i have read other complaints on the net and it is a safety issue.

I have a 2009 hyundai elantra with just over 100,000 miles on it. Around a year ago i had an issue with the eps light coming on. I took it to the dealer, and they had to do something to the computer. Yesterday i was driving and the eps light came on again. I then realized the power steering had completely went out in my car. I got into a parking lot and turned it off and then back on and it worked fine. Took it to the dealer and they told me that the entire steering column has to be replaced for $2,400. I am very upset because i do not have the money, and my extended warranty that i paid $4,000 for just ended. I am still paying on it. I decided to do some research and found out that it is very common in the hyundai elantra to have steering issues. As far back as 07 and as recently as the 2013 model.i had my baby and two other passengers in the car with me when it happened, and the thought of if i had been going 70 on the freeway when this happened makes me never want to get into the car again. I do not think that it is normal for so many cars to have the same issue. I think it should be looked into and recalled. It took every bit of strength i had to turn the car. I think this is a very serious issue and with so many complaints it should be looked into. Hopefully hyundai does not wait until lives are lost to fix this. I have added the links with the complaints similar to mine. It seems that the steering columns are defective. With so many repairs having to be made, i am sure hyundai is aware by now.http://www.aboutautomobile.com/complaint/2009/hyundai/elantra/steeringhttp://forums.edmunds.com/discussion/14787/hyundai/elantra/elantra-2013-steering-column-issueshttp://www.faqs.org/car/hyundai-elantra-2009/steering/http://www.hyundaiforum.com/forum/hyundai-elantra-touring-i30-45/eps-12111/http://www.arfc.org/complaints/2009/hyundai/elantra/

My electric power steering light is on. At first it would flash and has caused my car to drive slowly twice. It's been on for about a month now. I've been to many mechanics and none of them seem to know how to fix it. I would like to know if the problem has to do with the recall in 2016.

Steering makes clicking sounds, when moved from a center position, either left or right. Steering seems to 'stick' i.e. Does not move smoothly. The culprit is a "steering coupling" made out of plastic that couples the steering motor to the steering column. Knowing this is a defect, hyundai quietly extended the warranty on its replacement to 100,000 miles. However they did not send out a notification letter to vehicle owners. Myself and many other hyundai vehicle owners are very concerned that this would lead to loosing control of the vehicle while driving, leading to accidents and loss of life. This is clearly a defective design, and incorrect choice of coupling material, which is bound to get worn off often, since it is a plastic part sitting between two metallic parts moving against each other. This should be a defect that should be fixed regardless of mileage of the vehicle. Instead nhtsa has apparently allowed the company to just extend the warranty on fixing this; so it doesn't need to bear the expenses as vehicles go beyond 100,000 miles. It takes $400-$500 to fix mainly due to labor expenses, to replace a $5 part which is hard to reach.nhtsa has to do a better job at protecting the consumers against issues which are a result of defective design which can lead to accidents and loss of life. Power steering will fail, eps light comes on. This started at about 90,000 miles. Turn off car and turn back on, it works fine.

I was driving to work and there had been loose gravel on the road. Trying to keep the car steady i lost control and at 50 mph hit a tree head on.jaws of life were used to remove me from the vehicle.had anyone been in the passenger seat they would have died instantly.i suffered broken ribs, fractured vertebrae in my back, fractured pelvis, major contusions and hematoma.was out of work for almost 3 months and then returned part time for months.began the year 2015 full time which has been verydifficult. Wore a back brace and now use a cane all the time.

Started the car and motor/engine caught fire. It was the morning of 12/18/18. It was parked in front of my moms house (on the street).

Passenger side exterior handlefell off when passenger attempted to open door to my car on august 10, 2018.i occasionally drivemy 92 year old cousin to church or doctor visits and seldom have anyone else in the car with me.i need to help buckle in as well as unbuckle my elder cousin.i see this broken handle as a serious safety concern as i am 80 years old and not able to crawl around the inside of the car to open the door when the handle breaks.eleven months ago the back passenger door handle broke off in my hand , the repair bill was $125.00 at the local dealer.my car has 37,000 miles on it and i cannot afford to replace it.serious consequences may happen if there is an accident and outside help cannot get the passenger door opened from the outside because the handle breaks off in their hand. So now it will cost me again to replace the handle as i wait to see which handle will fall off next!i have chosen multiple cars over the years for my seven children and myself and never before had a car door handle fall off.please give serious consideration to this problem and demand a recall fromhyundai so they are required to fix this cheap component.

Thank you.

I hit a deer on highway 890 in rotterdam ny, spun out of control and hit the guardrail, car had damage all around, the most damage was in the front resulting in a totaled vehicle, my whole front end is gone, and no airbags deployed,we were traveling doing about 60 miles per hour

The contact owns a 2009 hyundai elantra. The contact stated that while driving 70 mph, the steering pulled toward the right on its own. No warning lights illuminated during the failure. While driving, the air circulation system turns off automatically even when it is turned on and then after a while it turns back on again on its own.again while driving, when the air circulation is turned off, it turns on sporadically and turns back off again.so far this has been happening only for a short duration but the concern is that if it turns off for prolonged periods of time during winter driving or during rain then the windshield defogger will not work which will end up being a safety hazard.not sure if this is an electrical problem - may be a loose contact in the electrical system or a wiring issue.not clear if this will end up affecting other devices such as lights, etc. Later.this has been happening for the past several months.i bought this vehicle second hand in summer of 2015.

Was driving home on interstate and all of sudden all my dash lights came on without warning, car died. Pulled over and parked it . Didn't overheat or anything. I'm confused why now my car won't start . Or attempt to turn over . Help!!

2009 hyundai elantra.consumer writes in regards to vehicle cover assembly air filter and recall issues.

Driver side visor doesn't stay in position and drops on its own. Thus it block the driver's ability to see the road. When i searched the google, i encountered several thousand owns have reported similar issues.

Acceleration faulty cruse control

I was driving home from work on sun night prior to my accident went around a curve and car started loosing control was able to regain control and headed home. I was pulling out of a parking lot today going about 20mph when my car started speeding up. I started braking, but the engine seemed to just want to go. Car accilerater gets stuck and will accelerate when caris first started, whether stationary or in motion.gas pedal will stick. Seems to function normally after the car has warmed up. I tapped on the gas pedal to see if it would un-stick and it accelerated at very high speed and was stuck until i pulled over and turned the car off. Acceleration dropped down slowly after i turned the car back on and left it in park. Resumed normally after.

Sudden acceleration while in slow traffic.seemed like it went full rpm. I held the brakes and put it in neutral. Rpms came down and i drive off.kinda scary though.

The contact owns a 2009 hyundai elantra. While driving approximately 20 mph, the accelerator pedal became stuck underneath the floor mat without warning. The vehicle's speed increased causing the contact to depress the brake pedal to the floorboard. The accelerator pedal released and the vehicle was able to be slowed down. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 87,000. Updated 04/16/15*ljupdated 11/2/2015

While driving the driver's side sun visor dropped down and dangled obstructing my view. It was held on only by the wires to the mirror lamp. It appears the plastic retaining tip on the visor mounting arm broke off (it is separated but still threaded through the mirror lamp wire).i was about to replace the entire visor ($174.00) as there is no option to replace the individual retaining assembly.however, yesterday the passenger side visor broke in the same manner. Hyundai was contacted, issued me a case number but said there is no recall and i should get with the dealer.

Sun visor driver side broke during drive (remained hanged on a wire) and blocked window.

Driver side visor doesn't stay in position and drops on its own. Thus it block the driver's ability to see the road. When i searched the google, i encountered several thousand owns have reported similar issues.

I went to move my visor and it broke off the hinge, i can't seem to find a way to fix it. When i am driving it sometime will fall out of the hinge hole ( i can get it into the hole but i can't get it to stay very long) and swing back and forth. It has hit me in the head a couple times already. This is a safety hazard.

The contact owns a 2009 hyundai elantra. The contact stated that the rear window rattles and seemed like it would fall out; the failure was worse in cold weather. Also, the dome light had material covering it that created fire hazard. The manfacturer, when called, stated that an independent company installed the dome light and they should be called. The failure mileage was approximately 4,000. The current mileage was approximately 4,500.
