I had taken my car in for service in april 09 for oil change, tire balancing.i had to return it because car was veering to the left.when i picked it up the 2nd time the the airbag light came on and now stays on while driving.on 5/1/09 i took the car back to dealer and they said the cause is "ppd sensor open" which they want to charge me $390 to fix.since the elantra of 2001-2002 had the same issue with an airbag light this may be a defect in the 2003s as well.

Brakes failed, andconsumer's vehicle rear ended another vehicle at 35 mph. Steering failed, andair bags did not deploy.consumer was not notified of any recalls.recall 03v496000 was issued.

I was rushed to the er and had contusions to my sternum area of my chest. *i did wear seat belts.

A few months back i began noticing that my check engine light came on. Would take 10- 15 mins to fill up gas tank. Sensor was triggered every few seconds, suggesting gas tank was full, but it was not. Took it to the dealer and was told there was nothing wrong with the car. With in the last month i have been noticing that rear automatic locking seat belt is not staying locked. Child car seats do not stay secured. Car occasionally stalls when started, and air bag light does not illuminate to determine if air bag will deploy or not.

I was involved in a car accident and the driver's air bag did not deploy and the passenger's did. The dealeship tells me that the driver's side air bag did not deploy because i had my seatbelt on and there was no weight on the seat and that the passenger side deployed because the was no seatbelt on and there was weight on the seat. I don't understand how this makes sense because ther was nothing or no one on the passenger side. I was driving and i would like to know why my air bag did not deploy. I was hit on the driver's side so i just don't understand.

Issues with pumping fuel, i don't know what to call it, but while pumping gas i can pump 15 +/- cents and the handle cuts of ass if the tank is full, takes forever to put $10 in.2nd issue is the electrical, each time i bump the dash at the radio area the lights either comes on or goes out and 2 weeks ago the radio quit working (not the fuse) i have also had to replace both front axles, motor mount broken, these issues have been since day one that i purchased the vehicle , i have also had to replace the plastic piece behind the brake pedal.

My car problems started approximately 6-8 mos after purchasing the vehicle. I was having problems with the car starting, engine, radiator, gasket, alternator, and fuel sector just to name a few issues. Over the years, i had this vehicle in and out of mechanic shop & hyundai dealerships. The vehicle was brand new, and i left off of the lot with no more than 10 miles on it. I am furious because i knew that the vehicle was a lemon, however the hyundai dealership kept fighting me on the claim. After 9 yrs. With this vehicle, i have spend approx. As much the vehicle, just on repair alone. I contacted the bbb and hyundai about my concerns and would like for my claim to be reviewed in its entirety. The car fax report will show every repair on my vehicle. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at[xxx] or [xxx]. Thank you for addressing my concern. Emission control system failure.i just had my vehicle repaired for a failing vapor canister purge valve that causes the check engine light to illuminate. This valve is part of the evaporative (evap) emission control system. According to my mechanic, the faulty valve stays in the open position which also causes the charcoal from the canister to release into the fuel lines, clogging it. The symptom of this problem causes you to start having trouble filling your gas tank. The gas hose keeps shutting off at the beginning of the fill acting as if there is a vapor lock. It won't let me put in much more than 25-50 cents before the gas hose cuts off. This repeats many times. It takes me between 15 to 20 minutes to fill up my gas tank. I went online to see if i could figure out the problem and to my surprise, there are an unbelievable amount of people experiencing this exact same problem with their hyundai's. Many people online made comments about being surprised that hyundai doesn't have a recall for this common problem.my repair bill to have this problem fixed was $399.31.thank you for your consideration to this problem.[xxx]information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

Defective design of engine temperature gauge. Gauge reads normal temperature with no coolant in the engine.

On march 4, 2006 i purchased a pre-owned 2003 hyundai elantra with 33,855 miles from buhler & bitter dodge located on route 35 in hazlet, new jersey.at the time of purchase i was advised that all used cars are certified pre-owned vehicles and are put through a 135 point check prior to being put on the lot.the hyundai that i purchased passed this 135 point check and still had the remainder of the factory warranty which was 5 years or 60,000 miles.the balance of this warranty would be transferred to the new owner.the car ran great and like all of our cars in the past it was garage kept and serviced in accordance with the service schedule issued to us from the dealer upon purchase.on august 22, 2007 i drove to staten island for a doctor?s visit.on my way home- while traveling on the garden state parkway-the car appeared to be losing power as it related to my ability to maintain speed or accelerate.for my safety i began to move over to the shoulder and proceeded to shut off the car.upon restart nothing occurred so i turned the ignition off again.there was no sign of trouble aside from the lack of power (i.e. No indicator lights illuminated, no smoke or noise was coming from the car), it just wouldn't start and then slowly everything appeared to shut off including the electrical power.at that point, i sat and waited for help to arrive.a gentleman from julian?s garage named scott arrived with a tow-truck and after trying to start the car himself stated that the either the timing belt went or the head gasket failed.based on everything shutting down, it appeared that it most likely was the head gasket.he then towed me to a gas station near my home.although disturbed by the situation and the fact that it was clear i would be without a car for a few days, i knew that i had the warranty and was covered.

I purchased my car about 3 months ago. Not long after purchase, the engine line lit up. I noticed when this happened the rpm's dropped and the car would sputter. I had a mechanic look at it. He checked the car by computer and felt it needed 2 sensors. I let him replace these. 2 days after the repair the same issue began occurring again. This time, when i stopped as for a traffic light, the car would stall, all warning lights would go on, and it would take a couple of tries to start.also, i purchased this car at arnold hyundai in roseville, mi. They went out of business not long after i purchased the car. I took the car to another mechanic and they could find nothing wrong. I took the car to a hyundai dealer. They thought a guide wire had come loose and repaired it. A couple days later the car was having the same problems. I took it to the dealership on december 22. They did a thorough inspection and said there is a leak in the vacuum system? also a problem with the exhaust. I'm wondering has there been a recall on this system or do have some sort of recourse?

The contact owns a 2003 hyundai elantra.while driving at any speed, the vehicle hesitated and paused.the vehicle was taken to a dealer approximately five times with no resolution.the current mileage is 31,000 and failure mileage was 31,000.updated 03-04-08 the consumer also stated the vehicle was bucking from the rear. The contact owns a 2003 hyundai elantra. The contact stated that the vehicle began to emit smoke and stalled. There were no prior warnings. The dealer first replaced the head gasket and engine but the failure occurred again. The dealer then replaced the head gasket again. The failure occurred for a third time. The failure mileage was approximately 50,000 and the current mileage was approximately 60,000.

2003 hyundai elantra, 138,000 miles.when driving on highway 9/18/10, suddenly began to smell (burning), white smoke from engine, then check engine light came on and temp gauge showed extremely hot - no warning before the engine overheated.mechanic says problem was clamp in radiator that either corroded or somehow came off.result is that the entire engine is damaged, and we have to replace it.my concerns are (1) this seemed to happen with no warning.there was no leak or symptoms of problems before the engine overheated and was irreparably damaged.(2) we had this exact same problem about 2 years ago.same scenario - driving on highway, engine overheated without warning, caused much engine damage.at that time, we were able to fight for some warranty coverage from the dealership.now, we are well past the limits of the warranty.i just find it extremely strange that this would happen twice to the same vehicle.

My wife was driving on a freeway approx 65 mph when she heard a loud pop, looking at the dash board all gauges reported nothing wrong. Suddenly a large amount of white smoke came from under the hood, blinding her visibility and cars behind her. She was able to veer off to the median and call for assistance. The repair shop noted that a plastic reservoir tank exploded and drained all coolant and damaged the radiator and recommended calling hyundai since car is in warranty and suggests that engine damage (seal damage may result in complete damage of engine and need replacement) the car is currently at dealership. This is a similar report as listed and may cause serious injury or death due to smoke disabling drivers view.

I have a 2003 hyundai elananta gt. There is a whining noise from both sides of the front of the vehicle when driving on the highway at high speeds, sometimes at 55 mph or at 75 mph.the dealer replaced the left front wheel bearing on 4/22/03. Thenoise on the left went away. The same noise surfaced on the on the right side of the car. On 5/22/03 the dealer replaced the right front engine mount, they said it was coming apart. Once i drove the car on the highway again on 5/29/03 the noise was there. I also still heard the whinning noise from the left side of the car again, but for just a couple of seconds. The right side will make noise continuously. Now i have to go back to the dealer again, wasting more of my time, money, and extra miles on my car. I live 130 miles from the nearest hyundai dealer. I have owned this car from 4/08/03 and the car has 2400 miles on it and will now be on my third attempt to have this car repaired.

Ck engine light came on 3 times took it to dealer said no problems just needed to reset codes??? about 2 yrs. Later was driving in my 2003 hyundai elantra in sept. Of 2009-a very hot day101-without warning no temp lights (nothing) i saw white smoke coming from the hood at first thought maybe heat waves- then car started to loose power-pulled over (very dangerous) due to loosing power on the highway quickly with many people due to fri.-labor day weekend 5pm- anyway pulled over to see that car was smoking (white smoke) engine was so hot it melted the radiator-went to dealer (bill dube hyundai) said warranty just ran out- because car engine was seized and did not work plus that fact that i still owed so much money on bank loan they could not possibly trade it in-so i had to replace the engine and radiator and still pay bank loan.

I purchased a defective vehichle, that became dissabled, and towed into the dealership for warranty repairs to the engine with only 2800 miles.i have made numerous calls to the dealer, inquiring about the vehicle.the service manager could not locate my car and couldnt give me any information on its where about's or anything.

Vehicle experienced sudden acceleration after brakes were applied.*mrconsumer applied all his weight onto the pedal and it didn't stop until a couple of feet behind the line.he realized the engine was revving up with his foot on the brake and not the gas. His wife suggested he shift to park. When he did, it sounded like the engine was going to fly out. He shifted back to drive, keeping full pressure on the pedal. After the light changed, he carefully released his foot and the engine returned to normal idling. Consumer planned to get it serviced but wanted a record of the failure on file.*ph

Check engine light was displayed on the dash. 2003 hyundai elantra evap system had a small leak, found purge control.the engine light would constantly illuminate due to the system detecting a small evap leak.the diagnosis would be gas cap was loose, secure the cap, cleared code/operating to specifics and found fuel cap hardly threaded/very loose, found fault code for large vapor leak, purge valve to have internal damage, and evaporative emission system leak detected (small leak).the consumer would ensure that the gas cap fitted tightly.the purge valve had been replaced twice.the consumer requested reimbursement.*sc

The contact owns a 2003 hyundai elantra. While parked therpm's increased to 7000 and would not decrease until the engine was turned off. The vehicle has not been diagnosed by the dealership, and there were no prior warnings. The current and failure mileages were 77246.

2003 hyundai elantra: vehicle completely lost power while entering freeway on-ramp. Had to pull off road to avoid rear-end collision with approaching vehicles. Vehicle returned to dealer where it was "fixed." a second episode occurred after vehicle was examined and fixed by dealer.

Consumer stated that while she was on the freeway driving at about 65-70 mph, she witnessed an object flying by.she stated she looked down and all of her gages were fine, then suddenly she saw smoke, she states she pulled to the side and got herself and her child out of the vehicle.she then looked under the vehicle and saw pieces were hanging from the engine.she states by this time all of the smoke that she had seen was gone.she stated that she called the tow truck and had her vehicle towed to a dealer.she states she could have been killed, along with her infant. At 36,000 miles the valves started tapping. Checked oil level, which was at the "low" line, and then added oil.tapping stopped, then resumed on highway.engine cut out while driving. The car was towed to the dealership and upon inspection it was determined that a crank in the cam had broken, throwing metal chards throughout the engine.entire engine needes replacement.

When pressing on the accelerator pedal vehicle accelerates slowly.vehicle was taken to the dealer on 7/2/2003. Dealer stated the problem was with the reformulated gasoline thatwas used.

Ever since i have bought the 2003 hyundai elantra new 2 years ago, i had nothing but problems. I have had serious exhaust problems, and have been to the dealer several times about this. I have been really sick, breathing in the fumes from the car. My carbon monoxide level is high, and i have been having trouble breathing for a long time now. The dealer refuses to see a problem with the car. I have had people drive in my car, and smell this exhaust. The exhaust smells like a skunk, and backs up through the front inside vents, it smells behind the car, and i cannot open the windows, because the smell is so strong it comes through the windows when opened to. The dealer keeps saying they don't smell anything. This is a very serious matter, and it amazes me that people care about money, instead of someone's health and safety.

Bought a 2003 hyundai elantra- never received a notice from hyundai or the dealer of any recalls-these recalls were dangerous and i drive a handicap gentleman to and from wk. 5 x week- i should have been notified.

The vehicle was taken to the dealer four times because it was not stopping when braking.on 9/9/2003, while trying to stop at a stop sign, thebrakes failed. The vehicle hit a truck and the front air bags did not deploy. Driver sustained injuries to the pelvic area and bruises on the upper legs.front passenger's head broke the windshield, and passenger suffered seizures. Child in the rear, age 11, sustained arm bruises.driver and passengers were transported to the emergency room for treatment.the vehicle was assessed by a repair mechanic, whodeterminedair bag sensors were impacted, and thebrakesfailed.the vehicle would tremble, the a/c did not work, the engine light was intermittent (go on and off), and the seat belts were inoperative.(which occurred 2 weeks after purchase) *sc

I've owned this 2003 elantra since july and have had both headlights replaced. This is uncommon. The car has only 33,000 miles. Something is wrong the lights should last longer than that.

Headlights burning out. I have replaced 10 driver side headlights and 2 passenger headlights since i bought the car in 2003.the dealer says they do not know what is going on.

Head light bulbs keep burning out.i have to replace the headlights in my car about every 3-6 months since i purchased the car new in oct 2002. And the dealership said there was no problem.i have had the dealership replace them, garages replace them, a neighbor who is a mechanic and myself so it's not that it has not been done correctly.i have started buying the 2 pack of bulbs because almost like clockwork once the one bulb goes the other goes within a short period.i have put about 10-15bulbs in each headlight since i bought the car but have never replaced the highbeam bulbs only the low beam.

Headlights will read dim but light will actually be on high beam, causing problem to other drivers. Dealer notified.

I purchased a used 2003 hyundai elantra 4 door sedan in february 2005.in june 2005 i had to have both low beam headlights replaced.now it is january 2006 and i will have to replace them both again.

We purchased a 2003 in february 2006 , since then theheadlights had to been changed 3 times, and now again after being stopped not knowing the passenger side was out,it went out right before we got stopped on api l 7,2007, being charged with aticket. And 3 points off my drivers licensewithout a warning ticket to get it fixed. There needs to be a recall on these cars it shouldnt happen that many times.

The contact owns a 2003 hyundai elantra.the contact stated that the air bag warning light continued to illuminate on the instrument panel.the dealer stated that the module failed and would cost over $600 to repair.there were no recalls for the failure and the manufacturer has not been notified.in addition, the low beam headlights would burn out every 3-6 months.the current and failure mileages were less than 36,700.updated 9/1/09 updated 09/02/09.

Dt*:the contact stated the lenses on the headlights clouded over in less than two years, making it hard to see the road at night.both low and high beams are affected.the dealer has been alerted and determined the headlights need to be replaced.

2003 hyundai elantra has 69,173 miles & has had numerous problems with the headlights burning out.the most recent replacements didn't even last 1,000 miles.7/27/09 - left headlight- 69,173 (mileage)7/5/09 - both headlights - 68,670 (mileage)5/6/08 - left headlight- 57,921(mileage)11/5/07 - right headlight- 52,428(mileage)9/5/07 - left headlight- 50,633(mileage)4/9/07 - right headlight- 45,223(mileage)6/3/06 - left headlight- 36,405(mileage)10/21/05 - 29,192(mileage)i talked to a mechanic- he said there is nothing that can be done to fix the problem other than keep replacing the burned out lights.i find this an unacceptable solution - it is a safety hazard.my son was driving home on 7/5/09 & both headlights burned out.he had to drive home on high beams.there is no reason for a car to keep burning out headlights. Updated 08/04/09.8jb

Since having the car, i bought it used a year ago, while not noticing any major issues, i still continue to have problems with the headlights going out.i have had the headlights changed three times nowwith alternating sides going out every few months.i cannot imagine this being a normal occurrence.

Head lights - i have a 2003 elantra and have to replace headlights every two to six months.i need to know what is causing this problem.dealership only claims that everyone is complaining of the same thing, but offer no explanation.

The contact owns a 2003 hyundai elantra. While activating the turn signals in either direction, the signal lights would either work intermittently or not work at all. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who was unable to determine the cause of the failure. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 80,000.

2003 hyundai elantra. I'm having problems filling the gasoline tank every time i have to put gas. It triggers the nozzle every 30 seconds and it takes me about 10 to 15 minutes to fill up tank. Still working on the problem

Unable to fill gas tank because the gas pump would click off just after pumping a few dollars of gas into car although the gauge indicated the vehicle was near empty.this continued to be a problem over and over again and just started out of the blue. One day it was working fine, then i noticed i was having problems with gas pump clicking off.took vehicle to mechanic and described the problem, they pulled up the recall notice.contacted hyundai and was told that my car "just missed" the recall.recall effected through november 9, 2003 and my car was made december 17, 2003.therefore i would not qualify for the fuel tank assembly valve recall id # 04v369000 - fuel system, gasoline:storage a valve on the fuel tank assembly may not close properly. If a vehicle rolls over and the fuel tank assembly valve is not properly closed, fuel spillage may occur. After being told i did not qualify for the recall i take my car to the dealership that states, found canister assemblycome apart internally restricting valve. The cost was going to be $450.00 plus tax and labor. Tried to find a better deal and all mechanics are telling me hyundai is refusing to fix the fuel tanks on some cars, but all the mechanics are doing is replacing the fuel tank assembly valve and vehicles are running fine with no further complaints.hyundai is ripping off customers by failing to include all cars affected by this recall.after talking to several mechanics they say is oncoming for a canister assembly to come apart (noting it could happen, but rarely). The hyundai people are saying my car is not "sensing" when it is full.which sounds like the exact thing the recall implies.i'm in the process of gathering the money to have this done (not at the dealership) and see if it fixes my problem as well.

During hot weather, above 100 degrees and after several hours of driving, my elantra will feel like someone is pumping the gas peddle.it is hard to maintain a steady speed.it is hard to get to dealer with problem present, because if car is turned off problem goes away. Took to dealer and they replaced spark plugs and wires, problem still there. Parts not available. When this problem happens and the car is pulled into garage, a very strong smell of gas is present. My fear is that the car will catch fire or explode.i have contacted hyundai, but they appear not to care.

Car would not idle or run properly.took car to authorized repair shop and they found that almost the entire gasoline from tank to engine had rusted and was leaking very badly.was told that car could easily have caught on fire and burnt up.

This continues to be a problem over and over again and just started out of the blue. One day it was working fine, then, approx 1 month after i had the car, i noticed i was having problems with gas pump clicking off.

I bought a brand new hyundai elantra on 5-8-03and on 6-30-03 and again on 7-30-03 i have had to take the car back to the dealer to have service for the same problem, which i found out this last service call, had been a knownproblem with that particular car in that yr of model, and no one has a fix for the problem yet.the dealer i purchased the car from made no attempt to inform me of this problem before i purchased it, and the first dealer i took it to did not make any attempt to inform me of this known problem either.i feel that i should have been told, being that it is a major problem, there is a vaper lock problem, which causes the car to shut down while in the middle of driving at unpredictable times.it is very unsafe for me to drive it this way, being that at any given time, the car loses the ability to accelerate, and therefore offers a very high chance of me getting involved in an accident, where i do not have the driving power to move my car out of the way of on coming traffic.i am very , very upset about this, and as of yet, the only thing the dealer service department has told me is, " it is a problem that our company is working on finding a fix for, but as of yet, there is no cure for this problem". That being the case, i do not feel i should have to keep this car.i do not feel safe driving in it alone, let alone aking my 9yr old daughter, and 5yr and 4 yr old sons into this car with me at all.

My fuel pump went out on my 2003 hyundai elantra 40 miles from home on the highway on a day that was near 100 degrees outside. When picking my car up 4 days later (because they did not have the part in stock) i find out that the part was a recalled part on my car. I asked the service person why i was not notified of this and his response was that the recall was "only in colorado". Keep in mind that cheyenne wyoming is only 10 miles from colorado and often dealers in cheyenne get their cars from colorado. I am a consultant and i travel across the state of wyoming-my car is my employment. This put me in a situation where i could have lost my job. I had to borrow a friends car, transfer all my equipment from my car to theirs. Also, i was on the interstate on a very hot day, not only is it dangerous to be stranded on the highway, but it was extremely hot outside and things could have been very bad. I do not understand why i was not notified ahead of time of this, it would have saved me an incredible amount of trouble. Also, my car was full of gas fumes after the repair--i was told this was normal because of how the repair is done and that it would be gone in a couple of days. It took over a week for the stench in my car to disappear. I had to use my car immediately to travel across the state-i had to drive down the highway with my windows open in order to not get sick. I would have liked to have been notified of this defect/recall-believe i should have been notified. I was very frustrated that the service center in cheyenne was "dumbfounded" about the whole event.

The contact owns a 2003 hyundai elantra.when the contact attempted to place fuel in the vehicle, gas spilled onto the ground.fuel will only enter the vehicle 30 cents at a time.the contact spoke with a hyundai dealer and they stated that the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign id number 04v178000 (fuel system, gasoline:storage:tank assembly) and could not assist.the current mileage was 84,000 and failure mileage was 80,000.

While driving vehicle hesitated and slowed down, then it stalled.consumer had the vehicle towed to the dealer for inspection, and mechanic determined that fuel pump needed to be replaced.

I had to replace struts in front

Recall # 03v257000, 09v125000, 03v496000 severe rusting and corrosion under my car which they claim was "fixed" under the recalls. They did not fix this! the front driver side axle is completely corroded and breaking - they claim they sprayed it with anti corrosion compound but this did not stop further corrosion and rust. The brakelines were also sprayed but this also did not work! my brakeline rusted out and all my brake fluid went out while driving. Hyundai is now refusing to correct the problem which by federal law has to be done!

Starting on 6/10/2016, every time i fill up the fuel tank, the fill tube backs up and the pump nozel shuts off.making it take longer to fill the tank.the vehicle is stationary with engine off, at all service stations.

Ongoing problems with fuel filling.it takes almost 1/2 hour to fill a tank.it continues to shut off.this is not getting better, but actually worse.please advise on any recalls or safety issues with the gasoline/tank.thank you.

We bought our 2003 hyundai elantra used but in very good condition. Now after about a year when we try to fill the gas tank the pump shuts off repeatedly. Is there any recall covering this?

A few months back i began noticing that my check engine light came on. Would take 10- 15 mins to fill up gas tank. Sensor was triggered every few seconds, suggesting gas tank was full, but it was not. Took it to the dealer and was told there was nothing wrong with the car. With in the last month i have been noticing that rear automatic locking seat belt is not staying locked. Child car seats do not stay secured. Car occasionally stalls when started, and air bag light does not illuminate to determine if air bag will deploy or not.

While driving the hood popoed up.driver was able to maintain control of the vehicle and pulled over. Then, driver took the vehicle todealer, andmechanic determined thathood lever needed to be replaced.

The calipers on the rear brake do not release when the parking brake is released inside the passenger cabin. In some cases the brake was on so tight that the right rear wheel dragged on the road. I had the vehicle back to the dealer 6 times but they were unable to get the issue corrected. The issue is much worse in the winter but even now in the spring when i put the brake on there is no resistance for the first 4 inches so i know it is still not operating properly.

My daughter was driving home from school and the strut/axle broke and caused her to skid off the rode, luckily she was not injured and was able to come to a stop in an empty lot.the tire was ruined and the fender was also damaged.we were able to get this fixed at the repair shop, for just under $500, however now the vehicle will not pass inspection due to the subframe being deteriorated. Upon researching the cost to replace this, i found that the vehicle has had several recalls, and wow both of these were on the list.my concern is that the vehicle is 2003 and we are not the original owners. I am concerned now that the other recalls may also affect their vehicle.the safety of my daughter and grandson is top priority.what can you help me with.can we still use the recall to have the vehicle repaired?

Front passenger side control arm fractured, allowing wheel to turn 90 degrees to the right resulting in an uncontrolled slide down the highway. This also blew out the tire and separated the axle from the transmission, spilling transmission fluid. Vehicle was uncontrollable, and once stopped immovable, and so stranded in the middle of the highway.

The contact owns a 2003 hyundai elantra. The contact stated that the passenger's side control arm became defective which caused difficulty to steer the vehicle at various speeds. The contact then called superior hyundai south (238 w mitchell ave, cincinnati, oh 45232) where she made an appointment and was informed to check if there were any recalls on her vehicle. Upon investigation, the contact linked the failure to nhtsa campaign number: 09v125000 (suspension) however, the vehicle was not included in the recall. The contact also stated that upon starting the vehicle, the vehicle stalled without warning upon depressing the accelerator pedal. The contact then took the vehicle to an independent mechanic who diagnosed the vehicle with a defective o2 sensor which was then replaced. Despite the o2 sensor being replaced, the failure persisted. The manufacturer had yet to be notified of the failures. The vehicle had yet to be repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 153,000.

I own a 2003 hyundai elantra gt from a month after purchase until 3/10/05 i had brought the car back to motor world (wilkes-barre, pa) for service 4 times for the same problem "check engine light was constantly on".one time the service guy told me to just put black tape over the light and i will not see the light .throughout my ownership of this car i had it service every 3,000 miles for oil changes and 1 time for tires / brakes.i have all documentation for all services. On sunday night 3/20 i was driving my mother and 10 year old brother home when the car started smoking and would not go into gear.monday morning 3/21 i had to take the day off work and arrange for towing down to motor world (hyundai co. In wilkes barre, pa that has been servicing the check engine problems).i received the call on 3/22 that the transmission needed to be replaced and would not be covered under the warranty as i did not have the transmission fluid replaced at 30,000 miles.the owners manual states that it is recommended to have the fluid changed at 30,000 miles if necessary, it was not necessary.the car has 34,000 miles, there was no signs that the transmission was bad.i have made contact several times with motor world and the hyundai rep. Who made the decision and they will not speak to me as i have a case with the lemon law. I have made arrangements to have the car picked up from there location , however i did not have the money to pay for a new transmission engine) and pay $ 300 a month. The last time it was serviced at motor world for the check engine light the rep. I dealt with (mike taylor) told me to relax there was no problem with the engine or the car, this kind of thing is simple and continued on that i was blowing it out of proportion. I asked to speak with that same rep. And for the service manger at motor world to speak with that same rep. And i was told he does not work there any longer.

I own a 2003 hyundai elantra. While stopped at a traffic lightwith the brakes on the rpms increased and the car surged forward.this has happened about 4 times in the last year.i was able to stop the car by breaking again.the current mileage is approximately 97000.i had a 90000 mile check up and maintenance about 2 months ago.this has occurred once since then. If i was any closer to the car in front than 1 car length i would have hit it.i am getting it checked by the dealer this friday.

While driving consumer's vehicle rearended another vehicle. Upon slaming on the brakes gear automatically put itself into neutral, causing the steering to lock up. Also, the air bag did not deploy.

Car would not go in gear.was towed to the dealer.dealer said transmission was shot.would not fix it under warranty because they claim it was because of the wheels spinning in the snow.the car was never spun as it was on cleared roads.they said tires show spinning wear.this is the second time we had transmission problem.dealer replaced under warranty with a rebuild tranny.i think we are getting the run around on this problem.

2003 hyundai elantra : clutch / transmission failure at 28,000 miles.warranty will not cover.hyundai has issue with high failure rates on standard clutchs 2003 2004 models.

We get a wind noise when driving into the wind and other misc times.noise sounds like an alarm clock without the pauses in tone. It sounds to be eminating from front of vehicle, windsheild, or the doors. The dealer thinks its the door seals.waiting to see. Been to the shop 5 times for this problem now!1st time they didn'tknow what it was, never heard of this problem, couldn't duplicate, second time they knew exactly what it was, ordered door seals.3rd time they got the wrong door seals, forth time, they got one wrong door seal again!fift time the have had it for one week three days to this date!also revs up to high during start up.dealer stated that the transmission was at fault????that it had to catch in gear?????this is a manual!what is he talking about!!!!?? also has bent rims!we have baby-ed that car!only 2400 miles and bent rims!this car is a lemon!!what do you [email protected] .

The driver side seat belt was to tight around the drivers neck.

The contact owns a 2003 hyundai elantra. The drivers side seat belt would not retract back to the original position after in was used. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who stated that the seat belt failure was not covered by the warranty and the repairs would cost $391 to replace a part of the seat belt. The manufacturer was not notified. The failure mileage was 31,841.

I had a low speed accident approximately 10-20mph in a parking lot where i hit a cement surrounding of a pole on the driver side and the airbag deployed on the passengers side causing significant damage to the windshield, busted the dash vents, locked my drivers seatbelt and shattered windshield glass all over the car.

Drivers side seat belt fails to retract and does not fit tightly due to failure to retract, leaving driver unprotected.

Consumer states while driving the vehicle at 50mph. The consumer was in a vehicle accident, hitting another vehicle from the rear. Consumer states the passenger side seat belt did not lock. The air bag did deploy.ph

While driving at 35 mph, the consumer's vehicle was involved in a front end collision.upon impact, the air bags did not deploy and theseat beltdid not hold the passenger, no warninglight appeared prior to the crash. *sc

Right front tire blew out while driving 50 mph and caused vehicle to roll over once. Prior to roll over, driver and passenger wore seat belts. .however, the front seat belts disconnected and failed to restrain the occupants. Driver sustained head injuries, and the passenger suffered fromhead and neck pain. Bothwere taken to hospital. Both occupants survived.

The contact owns a 2003 hyundai elantra. The contact stated that while driving 45 mph, he experienced a complete brake failure without warning. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for diagnosis and the contact was informed that all of the brake lines were corroded and caused all the brake fluid to leak from the vehicle. There was also severe sub-frame rust. The manufacturer was notified but offered no assistance. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileage was 82,000.

The contact owned a 2003 hyundai elantra. While driving 30 mph, the brake pedal was depressed and traveled to the floorboard. The brakes failed to respond and another vehicle crashed into the front passenger side of the contact's vehicle. The vehicle spun around several times. Only the passenger side curtain air bags deployed. The contact was taken from the accident by ambulance to a nearby hospital. The contact was treated for neck and lower back pain. A police report was filed. The vehicle was destroyed. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 151,000.

When pressing the brakes it sounds like it's metal to metal, the steering makes a funny noise when you turn the steering wheel. Also car keeps saying 02 sensor but there's nothing wrong with it and the check engine light keeps coming on because of it.*dt

In the past 6 weeks, i have drove my car maybe 5 times because it has been in and out of the shop so many time for default brakes. Once it seems to be fixed, they starting smoking. So it goes back in the shop for another week. Then i get it back, and i don't have any brakes. Goes back in shop, get it back and then my calipers stick again and cause my brakes to smoke. I have not had my car for almost 2 weeks because it has been sitting on my driveway and i do not feel safe driving it, nor is it even drivable because it is probably going to set on fire. I have about $2000 dumped into this car due to default equipment on the car, which the recall people claim it has nothing to do with their campaigns, so they told me to bring it to my local hyundai dealership and have them check it out. They found i need new brake seals, calipers on all 4 sides and new roaders (that we just replace a month ago brand new) because they are worn down so much due to the calipers sticking, locking up and smoking once a week for the past month.i work a full time job and a part time job to pay off my college loans. I cannot keep putting money into a 2003 car that i have only had for a year. It is not worth me spending another $600 to replace the brake system again for a car who has so many recalls on it, i can't count on both of my hands. Since i am a new owner, don't you think i would of received the recall notices in the mail? yeah, that has not happened. I do have a lawyer and i will not be afraid to give her a call because my car is complexly unsafe to drive and by the time i am done fixing all these problems (that are on the list of recalls) this car will be almost a $10,000 car which i only paid $5000 for.

While driving at 50 mph and brake pedal was depressed itwent to the floor and hesitated to engage.this also occurred while parking, and vehicle ran into a building.

I purchased my 2003 elantra in october 2003, since then have needed the rear brakes replaced twice, mechanic cannot explain why the rear brakes go so quickly.

The contact owns a 2003 hyundai elantra.beginning on december 17, 2005 the brake pedal extended to the floor when depressed.the failure occurred intermittently.when the vehicle was inspected by the manager at the dealer, the contact was informed that the brakes should not do that, but there was nothing wrong.the vehicle was towed a month and a half after it was purchased because the contact smelled brake fluid and the brake pedal was extending to the floor.the dealer initially believed that the brake cylinder failed.currently, the front brakes are scraping and still extending to the floor.on october 1, 2007 and october 2, 2007, the vehicle was thoroughly inspected by the dealer and they found no failures.the powertrain was unknown.the current mileage was 38,000 and failure mileage was 21,344.

While driving 55 mph driver applied brakes and pedal went to the floor. Vehicle skidded into a parked vehicle.both airbags did not deploy.the vehicle was towed.

Dt*: the contact stated while driving various speeds and depressing the brake pedal, the vehicle had a longer stopping distance.the vehicle was driven to the dealer on several occasions, however no problems were found.after many attempts to correct the problem, another dealer was contacted and determined the rear brakes were inoperable and the front brakes were doing all the work.the dealer replaced the front brake pads and adjusted the rear brakes.

While driving at 35 mph, the consumer suddenly slammed on the brake pedal, but they failed to stop the vehicle, resultingin a rear end collision. Prior to this incident the brake squeaked.the consumer feels that something should be done about her damaged vehicle.

Driver received nhtsa recall 03v496000 concerningbrake failure. Consumer contacted the dealer for an appointment, but mechanic told consumer that the dealer did not have the machinery to do repairs.

My concern with my 2003 elantrais with the safety of rear braking system on the car.on oct 23, 2003 i had the service performed for the recall 31b03r1 brake campaign 061.at 10,834 miles.on oct 7, 2007 i had regular scheduled maintenance performed complete brake system flush at 45,072 miles.on july 8, 2008 both rear wheel cylinders were leaking an had to be replaced as well as the complete brake system flush again. At 51887 miles.on march 13, 2010 both rear wheel cylinders were found again to be leaking and had to be replaced at 64,638 miles.i have had my car serviced at regular 3,000 mile intervals with all required maintenance done at my dealership. My concern is the safety of the brake system on this car, leaking wheel cylinders that need to be replaced at 13,000 mile intervals seems like a serious safety issue to me.

While the consumer was going 30 mph in the rain, the vehicle skidded.the brakes did not stop the vehicle, causing the consumer's vehicle to collide with another.*sc

The brakes on my 2003 hyundai elantra began grinding at only 39k miles. I contacted the dealership and was told brakes were not covered by my extended warranty. I took the car to midas because of the lifetime warranty and the brakes were not failing due to normal wear and tear. The front pads had a metal plate on the outside which had come lose and was cutting into the hub. The mechanic said this was a defect in the brake pads that occurred when they got hot and the adhesive came loose. During the inspection, they also discovered that the cylinders on the rear brakes were leaking. I ended up with over $600 in brake repairs.

Rear drum brakes producd a squeaky noise. Dealerreplaced the part five times, however the problemrecurred.

The defect stated in the brake hose recall 03 v 257 000 occurred while driving at 50-60 mph. This resulted in an accident.

Power steering failure.2003 hyundai elantra. Corrosion of power steering high pressure hose.

During service on 2003 hyundai elantra gt to repair the subframe and lower control arms due to corrosion damage (this was part of recall campaign), the dealer indicated that the 2 hoses to and from the power steering pump were corroded and leaking. Subsequently, the dealer broke the high pressure line when attempting to determine the location of the leak. Both the high pressure and return hoses had corroded beyond repair and required replacement.

Wife was driving elantra, made hard brake for red light.control arm failed resulting in loss of control of the vehicle, approximate speed at failure was 35 mph.luckily no accident resulted from this incident, total damage to vehicle was approximately 800.researched issue and learned there is a recall out for 2001-2003 elantra control arms, however never received notice of this recall or heard about it.local mechanic and dealership both confirmed severe rust through of control arms.vehicle is driven in nc and not subject to salt, control arms rusted through anyways.this issue needs to be publicized before more people die from high speed control arm failure.i have researched issue online and believe that many elantra fatal crashes attributed to "driver error" actually resulted from control arm failure.

Right front lower control arm and right front axle, broke while driving, causing loss of control. This was a previous recall, which was done at the dealership. Replacement of the control arms were not required at the time. Inspection, undercoating and ,drilled drainage holes were the fix. While stranded on the road, a cross country driver stopped. He informed me that he is seeing this same problem across the country with the 2002 and 2003 elantras. It looks as if the recall fix only postponed the problem. The arms should have been replaced, not holes drilled to let the water drain, the damage was already in the works, and now with so many of these cars still on the road,, we are looking at a disaster waiting to happen. I had just exited from a main highway, onto a local road when the incident happened, no one was injured. A few moments earlier would have been a very different scene.pictures are available, as well as aaa repair shop , invoice for the repair.

When pressing the brakes it sounds like it's metal to metal, the steering makes a funny noise when you turn the steering wheel. Also car keeps saying 02 sensor but there's nothing wrong with it and the check engine light keeps coming on because of it.*dt

When daughter was driving her 2003 hyundai, she had difficulty steering (very difficult to turn wheel)...we took it to a local repair shop who replaced the power steering pressure hose that had deteriorated.we are wondering if others have had this issue as well.it was very dangerous for her.could this be related to other issues under the car related to corrosion???

Power steering line wore hole in line where line crosses over frame. Power steering line should have been protected from frame and elements of road salt and water to keep from wearing out. Very much of a safetymatter, should be recalled & fixed properly to prevent an accident.

While driving my 2003 hyundai electra i lost power steering. I brought it to amechanic shop the power steering pressure line had corroded and was leaking powersterring fluidfortunately i was able to control the car to a safe stop then had it towed home i notified my hyundai dealership they responded byinforming me their were severalsimilar complaints filed iwish the e national highway traffic safety administration would look into this very serious problem.

The vehicle was taken to the dealer several times for wheel alignments but the failure continued. The contact called the manufacturer who stated that the roads were causing the failure. The failure mileage was 38,000.

My lower control arm broke in two away from the body and other drive components due to rust and i'm not sure what else. I was driving at a slow speed heard a pop noise got out looked and the tire was all the way against the wheel well.

During a rapid stop at low speed the passenger side control arm snapped rendering the vehicle unsteerable.had this occured at higher speed it is likely that serious personal injury would have also occured.

While driving consumer's vehicle rearended another vehicle. Upon slaming on the brakes gear automatically put itself into neutral, causing the steering to lock up. Also, the air bag did not deploy.

Extremely loud wind noise when driving into or with a crosswind. Noise seems to emanate from front of vehicle. Dealer has been unable to repair.

I was driving, came to a stop. I then began going around 35 mph the hood on the car came open. I could not see the road. I stopped the car only to realize the hood was damaged. The hood was dented and the fenders were damaged. The windshield was cracked in two places. I had to pound the hood and fenders out just to get the hood closed. When i got home the hood latch was not working. I then noticed that the cracks in the windshield were 5 to 6 inches long. The hood needs replaced, also the windshield needs replaced, the fenders need fixed also.

I was driving downhill to a stop sign (from about 20mph), and pressed the brake pedal, at which point i heard an awful crunch noise, and the front right corner of my car jolted, shook, and sounded like something was grinding together. I got out of the car to look at the front right wheel, and saw that it was turned in towards the center of the car, and bent under the front of the car, about 1/4" away from the back of the wheel well, while my other front wheel was aimed straight ahead. I drove the car 100 feet to a safe place off the street, during which trip the steering wheel tried to spin wildly in various directions, and the crunching, jolting noises and motions continued. The car was not drivable, so i called a flatbed tow truck, who towed it to my mechanic.. When the mechanic was able to look at the vehicle, he determined that the control arm had completely snapped in half, as a result of rust corrosion from the inside out.visual inspection of the control arm confirmed that the metal it is constructed out of was corroded down to a thickness of approximately 5 or 6 sheets of paper.water kicked up from wet roads by the tires had gotten inside the control arm (through a faulty seal) and, as there are no drainage holes in the control arm, it remained inside, eating away at the metal until finally the weight of the car snapped the arm in half.this failure of the control arm also wrecked the suspension of the car, as well as the cv shaft, the right front axle, and the sway bar links.the control arm, the cv shaft, and the sway bar links had to be completely replaced, and the car needed a realignment.

My rear subframe is rusting so badly the rear suspension is falling apart.

Our 2003 hyundai elantra is suffering from severe corrosion on the subframe/unibody, a problem for which a class action settlement was approved (see the following link http://saltbeltcorrosion.hyundaiusa.com/ for details regarding the cirulli v. Hyundai motor america settlement, which reached final approval on may 25, 2011). The settlement provided reimbursement for repairs. Although hyundai performed a "rustproofing/wax" repair in 2010 on this car, as well as a subframe repair/replacement in 2015 (which is considered by hyundai to have solved the problem as originally described in the class action lawsuit), we believe that the defect as described in the class action settlement was in fact not rectified, and thus consists of a failure of recall repair. In fact, it would seem that although hyundai did replace all or a portion of the subframe is 2015, the exact same problem has re-occurred on the car within less than 5 years, and is a serious safety issue (if the subframe collapses under the weight of the car, there would be serious risks of injury to any passengers on board).the deep subframe corrosion itself was only noticed and photographed by a local mechanic more than a year after purchasing this vehicle from its second owner and is evidenced by the attached pictures. In summary, although hyundai motor america considers that the corrosion problem as described in cirulli v. Hyundai motor america settlement was repaired successfully in 2015 on the car corresponding to the vin number attached to this complaint, we believe that it consisted of a failed recall repair, and that it is the responsibility of hyundai motor america to rectify the situation at their expense.also attached is a pdf showing a description of the corrosion within a larger estimate, which was authored by the same shop that took the photos of the vehicle's corroded subframe.

Clear coat on trunk and hood cracking.

While driving from 45 mph or greater with a cross wind across the car (left to right) the car will howl or whistle.the sound is so loud that it drowns out the radio and the road noise.opening the window seems to stop the sound but you can't drive for 8 hours with the windows down in the rain or heat.i have tried the dealers suggestion of using tape on the vents to quiet the noise but to no solution.

I had a wreck today on a highway where i was traveling at 40 mph and i slammed on my brakes and hit the car in front of me when the vehicle in front of me stopped suddenly. My chest rammed into the steering wheel and the bags did not deploy.the car was totally smashed in the front and the door had a hard time opening. I was rushed to the er and had contusions to my sternum area of my chest. *i did wear seat belts.

The car continues to make whistling sound when travel at sppeds in excess of 50 mph.the noise is distracting

Vehicle is low to the ground.when pulling into the driveway the bumper hit the ground at least ten times in the last six months.whenever the bumper hit the ground the bolts holding it fell out.

Front passenger side control arm rusted through on 3-18-09. No warning. Going 30 mph in very light traffic. Felt like we fell into a big pothole and car would not move. Happened very close to police station so they helped but no report made. Was late so car towed to house then to dealership in morning. No injuries (2 adults and 2 small children in vehicle). Other damage- front axle broke, damage to wheel well, front bumper, wiper fluid reservoir and other incidental parts. All fixed by hyundai including body damage and paint under extended warranty. Dealership claims to have examined drivers side arm and stated it was "fine". We do not trust this and are having it looked at by another mechanic.

I own a 2003 hyundai elantra gt that currently has about 58000 miles on it.while driving home, when i was approx 2 miles away i noticed that the car started to pull to one side a bit.thinking it was a flat, i drove slow for the remaining mile or so and when i was about 200 yards from my destination, the front end dropped and the car stopped.upon visual inspection, it looks like the frame where the passenger front tire meets the steering rod completely rotted through and broke.after looking on the web, it seems very similar to investigation pe09011.

As i was driving my 2003 hyundai elantra out of work, the structural metal component that connects to the front, passenger side tire (or referred to as lower arm or a-frame) snapped and the vehicle lost control and stopped moving immediately.the tire was essentially detached from the vehicle and damage to the passenger side door, front bumper and wheel cover.thank goodness i was not on a main road yet in rush hour traffic driving 40-50 mph or i am certain there would have been an accident when i would have lost control of the vehicle due to this latent structural defect.i had the truck towed to the nearest hyundai dealer to be examined and took photos of the condition of the rustedmetal control arm that had snapped.i did some research on recalls with this vehicle and there was a 4/2009 recall in certain states with heavy winters and use of salt to clear roads, etc.my state (nebraska) was not listed as an affected stated but all of the surrounding states (i.e. Iowa, minnesota, missouri, illinois, indiana, colorado, wisconsin) were.nebraska has just as much snow or more snow than iowa in my opinion.the vehicle was originally purchased in omaha, ne which is right on the border of iowa.i believe this will also be a problem in nebraska and surrounding states possibly.if this control arm snaps while someone is driving on the interstate or other roads at higher speeds, someone will be seriously injured.i am even more upset by the fact that my one year old son very well could have been in the vehicle with me when this happened.not good.thankfully, no one was injured and the only damage was to the vehicle itself.the dealer called today and they explained we are not a part of the recall but the evidence is pretty obvious that this is the same identical problem and they are trying to use arbitrary state boundaries to get out of their responsibility.we also carry a full warranty until 2013 on the vehicle so we will see what happens.

In 2009, a recall was issued for rust/corrosion of the front lower control arms of these vehicles (recall 091 per hyundai). We found out about this and took it to our local dealer in 2011. Holes were drilled and the car "passed" without need to replace anything. A "protective coating" was applied.on saturday, may 3, my husband was driving and pulling out of a parking space. He heard a grinding noise as he backed out, then heard something break and the car wouldn't move. We couldn't even push the car back into the parking space, as the tire/arm appeared to be detached. We found out the right control arm had rusted through completely, also causing damage of the axle. The car was taken first to our mechanic and then the dealership and it was determined the same recalled part had rusted through, causing the break. The car was fixed by hyundai, including replacement of both control arms. I'm just very concerned that this could have occurred while driving and caused a crash and serious injury. We had no idea of the risk, although we did have a bad winter with a lot of road salt used so i'm not surprised. I am surprised, though, that it was never advised to return and have this re-checked. I called hyundai's care management dept and the person i spoke with ([xxx]) denied this issue was related to the recall and said it must have been repaired only as a courtesy. I strongly disagree by what i heard from the mechanic. I wanted to make you aware as i'm sure the safety of many is at risk if this a result of a recalled part and they are un-knowingly at risk after this bad winter. Thank you.information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

Thankfully no incident, my mechanic pointed out to me during normal maintenance on the car, the lower control arm had severe corrosion damage that its almost split he advised not to take it on the highway until it was fixed.he printed out the recall notice of the problems with the front lower control arm.hyundai is giving me push back on taking care of it because im not in the salt belt.i am not in a salt free state they salt hear at the threat of flurries.that kind of damage is not normal wear and tear on a car that's under 60k miles.i don't want the world i just want them to fix the defective product, more important than that had my mechanic not pointed it out i could have put myself or others in danger if this snapped and i lost control of the passenger side wheel.i cant be the only one outside of the salt belt that is having this issue and may be in danger if it separates.thank you for taking the time to listen.

I went to have my car looked at because of the rattling noise and the popping when i brake and they told me that i need to replace my subframe. I found out today that my car was recalled for the same problem in 2011 the same year i had bought it.

The contact owns a 2003 hyundai elantra. While driving approximately 50 mph, the contact attempted to stop the vehicle on the shoulder because the steering wheel became slightly uncontrollable. The front driver's side wheel was bent inward, causing the vehicle to slide off the road and into a ditch. The vehicle was towed to the contact's home. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. The contact inspected the vehicle and discovered that the front driver's side control arm was fractured. The vehicle was included in nhtsa campaign id number: 09v125000 (suspension:front:control arm) and was treated with rust proofing material. The contact stated there was already rust present but the dealer refused to replace the front control arm under the recall. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 160,000.

Driving on highway and turning right; a tire blew. On inspection by a mechanic, the front passenger control arm was bent with rust on the exposed metal. The bent control arm allowed the tire to rub against the interior fender, eventually leading to the tire failing. The tire was in great condition before the sudden failure. On researching: there was a recall on 2003 hyundai elantra for front control arm problems. Nhtsa campaign number: 09v125000. This recall cites that road salt used in certain jurisdictions can cause internal degradation of the front control arms: leading to failure. Looking back through this car's history: it was originally registered in ohio, one of the states using road salt.i don't know why this car escaped recall, but it's having the same problems as other 2003 elantras.

As i was pulling out of a stores parking lot to enter a main street, i turned left at the intersection , and as the car was about one fourth in the intersection i heard a noise, such as when a car hits a road hole, and the car stopped but the engine continue to run.the main street was double lane, and the car coming towards my driver side was able to stop.i believe that if he had come faster i would have been hit.the car did not move further , neither forwards or reverse.so i stepped out and saw the passenger wheel pointing to the right instead of theleft, and so a piece of metal frame torn apart. Later that night i understood that it was the passenger side control arm.

The whole rear metal beam holding the rear suspension rusted out and fell off while driving sent csrd into a spin before we got it stopped could have been killed driving on interstate 70 from warrenton to wentzville mo yesterday mourning at 5:30 am.

My lower control arm broke in two away from the body and other drive components due to rust and i'm not sure what else. I was driving at a slow speed heard a pop noise got out looked and the tire was all the way against the wheel well.

On april 1st 2014 the front right lower control arm broke off when i applied the brakes in order to avoid hitting a canadian goose that was sauntering majestically across the road (the goose was unhurt).the right front wheel was rotated about 60 degrees to the horizontal and was moved backwards enough to damage the right fender.some two years ago, hyundai recalled this model to inspect for possible corrosion in the front suspension components.at that time the local hyundai dealer stated that there was no corrosion detected in this vehicle.while it is easy to blame this break on potholes, i would like to state that i am meticulous about avoiding them and i wonder if the suspension components were not weakened by poor quality corrosion protection and gave way when i braked.[xxx]information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

The contact owns a 2003 hyundai elantra. The contact was driving 20 mph and completed a u-turn when he lost control of the vehicle.the vehicle continued to veer into oncoming traffic and the contact was unable to regain steering control. The contact was able to coast to the shoulder, where the vehicle was towed to a local mechanic. The mechanic advised the contact that the front driver's side lower control arm was fractured. The driver's side lower control arm was replaced by the mechanic. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The contact referenced nhtsa campaign id number: 09v125000 (suspension: front lower control arms rusting), however the manufacturer advised that the vin was not included in the recall campaign. The failure and current mileage was 123,000.

As my wife was exiting our driveway the right front lower control arm broke. The vehicle was not operable. It was taken to malloy hyundai in woodbridge, va. I was not advised of any recalls. The vehicle was repaired for $1353.52 out of pocket. I recently learned about the recall on the suspension. Excluding northern virginia drivers places us at risk. It was fortunate my wife was not on interstate 95 and was not injured.

The contact owns a 2003 hyundai elantra. While driving, the rear of the vehicle shook violently. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was discovered that the rear cross member was corroded. The mechanic stated that the vehicle was unsafe to operate. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 130,000.

My rear subframe is rusting so badly the rear suspension is falling apart.

I was behind two vehicles at a traffic light, the light turned green and we all just started to proceed forward when the front vehicle slammed his brakes on.the vehicle directly in front of me slammed his brakes on and i slammed mine also.i felt the front end give a little so i made a right turn and slowed down to around 5 mph.i proceeded to my home about 500 feet away and turned into the driveway.i got out of the vehicle and found the right lower control arm broken just past the ball joint.i forgot to say there wasn't any contact between any of the vehicles, no one was injured.

The right side lower control arm suddenly complete broke in half close to the ball joint causing the tire to dangle and loss of steering and movement.this happened at a very low speed pulling out of our driveway.there was visible rust and corrosion on the inside of the boxed stamped steel control arm near the ball joint. This failure was exactly like nhtsa action number : pe09011 described.this vehicle was registered in va so the car was not subject to that specific recall although other states around us were.we received no notice of this recall in the mail or the potential problem even though we use and travel often to the states that did have the recall and they do put a lot of salt on northern va roads.

The contact owns a 2003 hyundai elantra. While driving 20 mph, the front driver side wheel detached from the vehicle. The contact lost control of the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who stated that the front passenger lower control arm was rusted from the inside out and the axle detached from the transmission. The vehicle was repaired. The vehicle was taken to columbia hyundai (10981 montgomery rd, cincinnati, oh 45249, (513) 489-2000) where it was diagnosed that the front passenger lower control arm was completely safe and had a small amount of rust. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 68,000.

As i was driving out of parking spot at work the front right side of car dropped. Got out and found that the right wheel had folded under car. After further checking found that that control arm had broken and fluid pouring out from under car. Was informed by fellow worker that this car had a recall on control arms.i checked into problem and found that the recall had been addressed but the arms were not replaced.i am the second ower of this car. The arms were waxed and drilled but it looks like it didn't take care of the problem.mileage on the car at time of waxing was 113,715 miles .im just glad that i wasn't out on the highway at the time. Will hyundai take care of this for me and how many more cars are out there with same issue?

8/11/2009, my daughter and i were driving a 2003 hyundai elantra down a small street in chicago when the passenger side front lower control arm fractured at the ball joint attachment . The tire then came away from the assembly and was rendered inoperable. In october of 2009, i became aware of the recall regarding this and filed a complaint here and hyundai motor america reimbursed me for the replacement of the control arm.i then took the car to my local hyundai dealer who simply "added a plug kit and rust preventative." an inspection of the subframe did not occur at that time; which should have occurred since a control arm had already fractured and the recall c/091 calls for this inspection, as well as repair and. Or replacement of any parts attached to these assemblies.on 3/28/2011 , while having some brake and tire work done,a local goodyear dealers service department noticed severe corrosion on the drivers side control arm as well as the subframe. I immediately had the control arm replaced due to my near fatal previous experience. I have the original controldrivers side control arm in my possession, as well as several photos of my subframe.please pass this complaint along to hyundai for review.i have already spoken to the attorneys in the cirulli,d'elia case #[xxx] and they urged me to try to discuss this with hyundai .information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

I was backing out of the driveway when i heard a noise and felt my car jolt.i got out and my passenger side tire snapped off the car.

During a rapid stop at low speed the passenger side control arm snapped rendering the vehicle unsteerable.had this occured at higher speed it is likely that serious personal injury would have also occured.

The vehicle's tires were out of alignment and all four tires had to be replaced. *nlm

2003 hyundai elantra 4dsd vin # [xxx] ....i have had a recall for several months, since 1/1/10, here in selden, ny 11784 for the "suspension: front control arms".i had the vehicle inspected for the recall on 4/1/10.the dealership at husted hyundai at 1752 middle country road centereach 11720 ph# 631-580-0800 informed me it qualified for replacement of said suspension frame, but the "part(s) are not available".they did not offer me a loaner vehicle or any short term replacement plan.being that it is my only vehicle, i cannot leave the vehicle there while they "wait for the parts", andi had no choice but to sign a disclaimer of "taking the car at my own risk" until the part(s) arrive.i have called today,5/3/10, and the part(s) are not in, and they say the do not know when they will be in.i am concerned about my, and my family's, safety in driving this vehicle while it is deemed "unsafe" by the manufacturer.i do not know what to do about this issue as they have given me no options but to wait for the part to come in, while jeopardizing my safety with the current recall due to back order of parts. Is there any authoritative or governing organization that can help me(and other recall customers) promptly rectify this problem with hyundai's obligation to recalls?[xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

Traveling on interstate about 50-60 mph and applied brakes. During braking (not skidding) the right front control arm failed and right front tire turned out skidding the car to a stop.managed to skid the car into the middle median and had it towed back to repair shop near home.replaced broken control arm. Wheel hitting inside of fender also bent fender.this was on a 2003 hyundai elantra with 113,000 miles.control arm was rusting out where it broke.

I had just exited the highway and was on the off ramp when the car came to a sudden stop. The right front tire was at a different angle than the car. I was unable to move the car. I was sitting on a very busy off ramp from the highway and couldn't move the car. I had it towed to a hyundai dealer and found out that i had a right front broken axle and control arm. The car only had 66,953 miles.it was determined that it was caused by corrosion and hyundai agreed to pay for the repairs. Lucky for myself and hyundai no one was hurt. There is still a problem with the exhaust that is a direct result of the failure. It was not a problem before. I have an appointment for repairs, but no guarantee that hyundai will pay for that. I believe this damage may have occurred when trying to get the car onto the tow truck. Since the wheel wouldn't move it caused some other damage. The police were called because the traffic was heavy at the time, but when they saw the tow truck was there by the time they arrived they didn't even stop, so no report was made.

The contact owns a 2003 hyundai elantra.while driving approximately 45-50 mph, the contact attempted to brake for a traffic light and had to apply more pressure to the brake pedal than normal.she pulled over to the side of the road and noticed that the front passenger side tire was out of place.she drove the vehicle to the repair shop and the mechanic stated that the front passenger side control arm failed.the dealer replaced the control arm at the cost of $396.95.the failure mileage was 74,000 and current mileage was 75,000.updated 06/12/09 updated 06/16/09.

2003 hyundai elantra has had issues withhyundai safety recall notice:09v125000: front suspension controlarm failurewhile driving at 21 st and ashland in chicago, the front lower control arm broke away .the control arm was replaced close to the scene , as the vehiclewas rendered inoperable; and had to be towed by allstate motor club to the nearest shop.i have receipts for the tow and the repair.

Driving home from work one day i was coasting down a hill by my house to a stop sign. As i pressed on the brake something obviously happened on the front passenger side of my car. I thought that i had blown a tire. When i got out to look the entire wheel was hanging off of my car, pushed up against and crumpling the wheel well.the car was towed to a service station where they told me that the front passenger side control arm had rusted through and snapped under the weight of the car. I was just lucky because i had been on the highway 10 minutes before this happened. After a few months of calls to hyundai and them conducting an investigation my $300 i paid for the repair was reimbursed.i traded my car in anyway because the mechanic said there was no way to tell if the driver's side control arm was having the same problem because it rusts from the inside out.

The contact owns a 2003 hyundai elantra. The contact stated that while driving 5 mph and making a left turn, the front passenger wheel detached from the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to the dealer who stated that the vin was included in nhtsa campaign id number 09v125000, suspension, front control arm and the part needed to correct the failure was not available. The dealer also confirmed that the front drivers side wheel was corroded and would also need to be replaced. Two months following the failure, the parts were still not available and the vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileages were approximately 89,000.

On june 12, 2009 i purchased a used 2003 hyundai elantra. On july 27, 2009 the lower control arm on my2003 hyundai elantra broke off while driving and the wheel fell off.i contacted the hyundai dealer in kalamazoo, mi about repairs and was told there was no warranty or coverage for repairs.i had the parts repaired by my mechanic at my expense for $484.06. On august 27, 2009 i received a recall campaign 091 notice from the previous owner sent by hyundaimotors advising the lower control arm problems and advising to have it fixed at a dealer or seek reimbursement for repairs made before receiving notice.i then filed a claim with hyundai motors of $484.06 with all paperwork on august 29, 2009 seeking reimbursement.to this date and many calls to hyundai motors i am told they are still reviewing the claim and it will be another 6-8 weeks.i feel i am getting a run around and will not be properly reimbursed under the recall law.

2003 hyundai elantra driven under various but primarily moderate conditions, purchased and originally residing in coastal virginia, traveling occasionally anywhere from new york to florida, residing in eastern england for four years (owner was active duty us military), and now having been in oklahoma for two and a half years, recently exceeding 90,000 miles on the odometer.the car has been primarily highway driven since in oklahoma with some travel on gravel roads.several feet after entering a parking lot, with wheels turned, the right front lower control arm fractured resulting in the tire contacting the car body and coming to a skidding halt.no significant body damage occurred, though loading onto a tow truck without further damage was difficult.vehicle is currently at a hyundai dealership repair facility but they show no recall for the item.at this time i (the owner) am assuming this is because the purchase and registered state are not included in the current recall.

I was driving 11 miles to the airport, involving 8 miles of 60 mph freeway driving; the rest was city driving, 25-45 mph with several stops. After i stopped at the security gate and proceeded forward, i heard a loud crunching thud on the front end; the car screeched to a halt; and i thought i collided with a concrete block or a deep pothole. The right front wheel was turned nearly 90 degrees to the right, while the left wheel was straight. The drive shaft and tie rod were holding the wheel on the car, but the main structural component of the right front end was completely broken off. The lower control arm had snapped, apparently because of rust and corrosion. My car was partially obstructing the parking lot entrance and could not be moved. I informed the airport police of the incident and promised to have the car towed off the lot when i completed my 3-hour shift. I met the airport police and the aaa tow driver at 1:45 am. The broken front end made towing very difficult, and some body damage resulted from the wheel well and fender resting on the tire in transit. The car was taken to the aaa shop at 2am. I researched the front end failure on the internet and found many similar complaints and discovered that there was a product recall on the failed part. I called 800-633-5151 and was told that my vin was not part of the recall. The catastrophic failure of the front end could have killed me, if it happened 5 minutes sooner, so i filed a formal complaint. I was assigned a case number and advised to have the hyundai dealer inspect the damage. The dealer confirmed that i was not included in the recall, but said it was very likely that hyundai would repair the car based on "good will." the recall excluded nebraska cars, although it was purchased in mo and driven to work daily in iowa. My life was placed in jeopardy because i was not included in the recall. Hopefully, hyundai will accept responsibility for correcting an obviously dangerous defect found in all 2003 elantras.

Hyundai elantra--when going 45 mph or faster, i get the same loud scraping noise that others have reported.the dealer has no answer.i get the noise mostly on the passenger side, but have heard it on the driver's side, also. The noise is so annoying that it may be a danger by distracting the driver with its screech. *nlm

I own a 2003 elantra gt and i have never received any information about any of the recalls listed on this site.

Just want to know ifall recall were doneto this car.

The entire steering assemblylocked up. The vehicle was towed to the dealer. The consumer was told to file a claim with the insurance company.this was a result of the floor mat being under the brake/clutch.on another occasion, the vehicle would not come out of gear or reverse because a bolt had loosened and traveled up throughout the gears and was removed by the dealer. *sc

Consumer 2003 hyundai elantra has a design flaw, in the positioning of the brake pedal and its proximity to the gas pedal.***no answer required*** the vehicle suddenly backed down the driveway into the curbside mailbox.on another occasion the consumer stopped the vehicle, but the vehicle bucked and hit a vehicle in front of them.the consumer noticed how the pedal was considerably higher and not as close to the gas pedal.*sc

I started the car in the driveway, put the car in reverse and let the clutch out normally and the car just roared in reverse, down the driveway. I had one foot on the brake and at one point i pushed in the clutch and nothing would slow the car down.i hopped the 8 inch curb across the street and slammed into a 12 ft high bush and then the car finally stopped.the car is really in bad shape. There are skid marks in the driveway and the street.

After driving my 2003 hyundai elantra gls about 60 miles on aug. 18, 2010 my check engine light came on. I took it to be serviced at a shop and waited until the next day for the purge valve and the control valve (both acquired directly from the manufacturer) to be replaced. 2.5 hrs later, approaching a stop sign, my car began accelerating despite my repeatedly hitting the brake. I put the car into n, pulled up the emergency brake & continued to rev/accelerate until i turned the key off and cruised into an empty intersection. About a minute later, i turned the vehicle back on and waited to see if i could feel or hear anything odd. I attempted to drive the vehicle again and the exact same thing happened after driving about 0.5 mile. I contacted the auto shop that replaced the valve and was told it did not sound like it was associated with what was fixed but to let him know after i had another shop look at it (since i was 1.5 hrs away). I called the tow truck driver and explained the situation. While waiting for the truck, about an hour later, i started the engine so my father could listen to the engine and my engine revved to 7000 rpm just turning it on. It was in park at the time. I immediately turned it off and didn't attempt to start it again. Upon the tow truck driver's arrival, i explained what had happened each time. He started the car, reversed it, put it into drive and it accelerated on its own a third time while in drive. He turned the engine off and loaded it onto the truck. Upon investigating any causes, he told me he cleaned out the throttle and it was running fine. He test drove it several times and said there is no indication of the problem happening again but of course cannot guarantee it will not happen again. This is clearly an indication that the problem may not be fixed and noone can tell me whether its safe to drive or not. I'm scared for my own sake and for the sake of my 3 young children. I refuse to drive it for fear another incident may occur.

Car was coming up to speed on the highway when the traffic started to slow down.the brakes were applied with the vehicle speed at approximately 45 mph and then there was a sensation of suddenly being pushed forward.the car speed seemed to increase even though the brakes were being forcefully applied, which resulted in the tires leaving skid marks on the pavement.the car did not come to a stop before rear-ending the vehicle in front of it, which resulted in damage to the front bumper of our car being caused by the other vehicles tow hitch mount.the driver of the other vehicle did not complain of any injuries at the time of the accident investigation by the local police department.

When pressing on the accelerator pedal vehicle accelerates slowly.vehicle was taken to the dealer on 7/2/2003. Dealer stated the problem was with the reformulated gasoline thatwas used.

Defective windshield-2003 hyundai elantra gls. *mr there was a terrible glare from the sun hitting the windshield which made it extremely hard to judge the distance of objects. Thedealer was notified and stated that the glare was a characteristic of the car.the vehicle experienced brake noise.the dealer did some work on the car but is was still noisy.the defroster took 15-20 minutes to clear the windows and heated mirrors.when it rained the water was on the inside the vehicle on the underside of the car door.*scc *nlm

01/10/07windshield wiper failure to clear windshieldwhen using the wipers to clear snowfrom windshield, the middle of both wipers would not clear snow enough to see out in certain spots. Winter blades had just been installed. I stopped the car and wiped them off. Blades continued to skip over certain spots on windshield. This has happened numerous times. I agree with others statement that maybe this car is not meant to be driven in the snow, or at least wipers not meant to clear off snow as it lands on windshield. I too, had previously completely cleared buildup ofwindshield before starting out.

After driving approximately 5 minutes during a snow storm the driver's side windshield wiper quit working. The wiper would not move.of course i could not see to drive in theheavy snow storm.this also happened last winter during a heavy snow storm.both wipers quit working during that storm.last year the dealer who repaired the wipers said they were frozen. This year another dealer stated it was a bolt designed to pop so the motor to the wipers wouldn't burn up.the car was heated up both times, and the windshield was cleaned of snow and ice both times before even attempting to drive during the snow storms.this is a very dangerous thing to have happen while driving.visibility is zero. Luckily i was not on the interstate driving, in which there probably would have been a serious accident.if the dealer is saying it's due to design, then this is a very dangerous design.the dealer is more or less saying this car is not designed to drive when snowing.the car was towed to a dealership and a bolt was replaced.

During a rapid stop at low speed the passenger side control arm snapped rendering the vehicle unsteerable.had this occured at higher speed it is likely that serious personal injury would have also occured.

We get a wind noise when driving into the wind and other misc times.noise sounds like an alarm clock without the pauses in tone. It sounds to be eminating from front of vehicle, windsheild, or the doors. The dealer thinks its the door seals.waiting to see.
