While driving down my residential street, my passenger side air bag detonated for no reason. The car was not in an accident of any kind. I immediately contacted hyundai, who made me do all sorts of paperwork, saying they would investigate and have an answer as to whether they would replace the airbag, ripped upholstery and now broken seat belts. They claimed they would have an answer within 6-8 weeks of receiving my paperwork. They received it on october 3, 2011. I still do not have an answer, and now hyundai will not respond to my emails.

Several weeks ago, i filed a complaint on this site 10049365.i have seen no responses of any type. Now to take that complaint a step further. Many of the problems that i have encountered with this hyundai death trap, and the unwillingness of hma to look into the problems ,or the dealers to rectify the problems is well documented on this web site. As i mentioned in my previous complaint, i went through the lemon law process in my state. They require arbitration with the bbb autoline. The arbitration was a joke and the hma representative accused my wife of driving the vehicle as a commercial vehicle and put all of the car woes on her. She drives the car for work, mostly highway.also, the arbitrator accused us of having a tow hitch on the car, which is legal, but not recommended. Well, we have no trailer or hitch. The bbb autoline is rigged against the consumer and they should not associated with any state or federal laws whatsoever. Hyundais of this model are certain death traps and i feel that the federal government should order hma to repair everyone of them now. The consumer is stuck between a global conglomerate andlocal dealers who will not repair these vehicles.*la

The vehicle was impacted on the passenger side door yet the air bags did not deploy. *nlm*nlm

The air bag light on the dashboard illuminated.this marked the third such incident since the vehicle was recalled for an airbags defect and received a replacement airbag wire kit and vinyl cover on 12/12/2008 at 60,414 miles.when i took the vehicle in to the local hyundai dealership, they found that the side airbag for the front passenger seat had too much resistance because the wiring harness had fallen from the protective bracket.to address the issue, the dealership tightened the connector and secured it to a protective bracket with a zip tie.the dealership performed the work under the twelve-month/ 12,000-mile service and parts guarantee stemming from the repair for the previous incident in which the airbags became inoperable because of a poor connection at the psab connector under the front passenger seat.

Hi, my daughter has an 02 hyundai elantra gls.i brought the car in to our local torrington ct, dealer who performed "two recalls" but not the one needed because it isn't showing up as a recall.my vin# is [xxx]and the recall i am looking to have done is number 088 which is listed everywhere from motor trend to automotive.com as the exact problem on my daughters vehicle for 2001 and 2002 elantras. They only have recall 080125 listed which was completed.this is a very serious problem because neither air bag will work. Air bags activated causing driver to lose control of visibility and vehicle. Abl.pco***dimsii ivoq entry posted after 12/12/02 cut-over to artemis*****769299

Air bag light comes on due to loose connection under drivers seat.

While traveling at 35 to 40 mph driver lost control of vehicle and slammed head on into a street pole.upon impact, none of the airbags deployed.then, air bag light illuminated shortly after.the vehicle was towed to dealer.

Was traveling home at 6 pm and i was coming over a hill and a car stoped short i swerved to avoid collission and side swiped a telephone pole.the airbags went off and i was hit with a piece of sharpnal that went into my lip causing me to get stitches and has left my face disfigured.

My 2002 huyndai elantra gls suddently the airbag is on soon engine running, and i have been told by technician that the airbag defective and it is under a recall.

From day of purchase, i noticed a vibration in the steering, starting about 42 mph. Took the vehicle to dealer, who rotated and balanced tires. Vibration then started about 50 mph, back to the dealer rotated and balanced tires again along with alignment. Vibration about 58 mph back to dealer again, rotation, forced balancing, rotor turned down, still had vibration. Filed under lemon law, final attempt by service department involved hma regional chief mechanic trouble shooter. He claimed they loosened motor mounts and let engine center itself, changed tires, balanced and aligned again. After a week i picked up car which he said was fine. Vibration still noticeable. Gave up on hma and drove car about 20,000 more miles till vibration got so bad i had to go to a brake shop because it was almost impossible to stop. They changed pads, adjusted brakes and rebuilt right front caliper. No more vibration. Hyundai won't pay for the repair, so following thru with lemon law and hoping to get out of this death trap. Air bag light comes on some days, and stays on all day, some days it's not on. Do the air bags work. Also having problems with paint finish, door seals and seat belt retractors. Real piece of junk and i would never recommend this car to any one. Also had to have brake dust removed from rear brakes at about 7000 miles and the dealer charged me 60.00$ excessive dust accumulation is a design defect and at the least should have been covered by hyundai. *laabl.pco

2002 hyundai elantra.srs airbag light came on instrument console.the passanger seatbelt tensioner detonated about a month later.about two months after that the driver side seat airbag deployed on its own while i was driving..no impact whatsoever.car now in dealer for module replacement and aribag replacement.

Dash board air bag light comes on - no crash, etc. Light stays on. Appointment at local dealer to diagnose.

Air bag light is on. Currently there is a safety recall in effect describing movement of the air bag wiring harness underneath the front seat. I visually confirmed the airbag wiring harness underneath the front passenger seat has been dislodged. I spoke with hyundai 112 [631-758-2200] and hyundai [800-633-5151]. Both times i've been informed there's nothing they can do because my car is not within the vin range of the recall.

Air bag light comes on when you move the seat forward or backward.should be covered by a recall, but when i call the dealer i am told that there are not open recalls on my vehicle.yet, the recall list for fixing the air bag system lists 2002 hyundai.

The airbag light illuminated.i took the vehicle to lakeland automall hyundai and was charged $101.93 for an assessment that the airbags were inoperable due to a faulty airbag control module.this hyundai dealership then quoted me $693.31 plus tax to perform the repair.i asked whether this issue should be covered by the recent airbag recall under which the vehicle had received a replacement airbag wire kit and vinyl cover on 12/12/2008 at 60,414 miles.lakeland automall hyundai claimed that the faulty airbag control module was not subject to recall.eventually, this dealership and hyundai agreed to replace the airbag control module on 2/13/2009 as a "warranty extension" for the $101.93 fee that i had already paid.

Srs light in instrument cluster would come on and off then, stayed off.i took vehicle to dealer and was advised the wiring harness under the passenger front seat needed to be replaced. I declined to replace as the cost was very high. I later checked the nhtsadata base and found this problem listed for the 2002 hyundaielantra;nhtsa campaign id number: 08v533000.i called the dealer in regards to the recall and was informed my car was not included and the stated recall, was a different problem. I later called hyundai usa and they advised me my car was not included in the recall as it was manufactured 6 months later then the recall group.my vehicle has the same problem as that listed in the above recall. If there is a side impact the side air bags will not deploy, a definite safety issue! i think hyundia should make and pay for the repair!

Car involved in a collison, air bags failed to open, driver injured, car struck on passenger side, car was a total lost.

On the evening of 6/27, my son was driving our 2002 hyundai elantra.there were three other passengers in the vehicle.a deer ran in front of the vehicle, and my son veered off to the right (in an attempt to avoid hitting the deer), ran off the shoulder of the road, and into a ditch.the vehicle did not roll over, but it came to rest on it's right side.the two front and two side airbags did not deploy.a fire ignited (almost immediately) in the engine compartment area of the vehicle.all passengers were wearing seat belts, and through the grace of god, all were able to escape the vehicle before it became thoroughly engulfed in flames.this is related to the fuel tank assembly recall 04v178000

While driving 35 mph consumer's vehicle wasinvolved in a frontal collision.upon impact, both frontal air bags failed to deploy.this caused the driver to sustain major injuries, andwas transported to the hospital.the vehicle was towed to a dealer for inspection.

The car hyundai 2002 elantra used to be very good car .it did not give me complain during 4 years. But when 80,000 miles covered the air bags lights keep on and off during high speed. But then problem come to normal and engine light does not go away.

On board computer failed to deploy airbag and seat belt did not hold during an accident which resulted in injury to my neck and back.*la

Brakes locked up and skidded for approximately 50 ft. At below speed limit causing rear end collision. Car bumper was punctured by tail pipe of vehicle in front and air bags did not deploy.

During a 35 mph direct frontal collision with another vehicle, both front air bags (driver's side and passenger's side) failed to deploy.

I currently own a 2002 hyundai elantra.the airbag light came on one day for no apparent reason. I took it to a local hyundai dealership service garage and they explained that the wiring underneath the front passenger seat had become disconnected due to a few items that were under the seat.i called hyundai consumer affairs to see if there had been a recall on this, as it seemed odd to me that this could happen simply due to an object being underneath a car seat, and they indicated there was indeed a recall for this same exact situation for my year, make and model, but that the manufacture date on my vehicle was approximately 6 months outside of the range of the recall, so there was nothing they could do about it.i find it suspect that they cannot cover the cost to fix this issue, which is exactly the same as the current recall description, just because they determined that my vehicle is outside the manufacturing date range. I would like my vehicle included in this recall so that this does not happen again, causing a potential safety issue.the recall information can be found on your website.the nhtsa action number is ea08012.

Airbags on my 2002 hyundai elantra gt did not go off when i had a head on collision with a guardrail at high speed.no injuries except whiplash, luckily!

My daughter was driving our 2002 hyundai elantra when she hit someone from behind.all of the injuries from this accident were minor, but the rear seatbelt became a major concern.our grandson, who is almost 2 years old, was in his carseat in the back seat on the passengers side.his seatbelt did not hold his seat.he and the carseat were thrown forward against the back of the front seat.he had some bruising on his knee and struggled to walk for a day or two and this seems to be the extent of his inbjuries.however, i am concerned about what would happen if this had been a more serious crash.i spoke with the local dealer, hunters chevrolet, and they gave me some crap about sometimes they work and sometimes they don't.it all depended on the amount of enertia the car seat generated when it flew forward.this doesn't sound right or safe to me.also, i am interested in finding out why the driver's airbag did not deploy.

I owned 1 2002 hyundai elantra, in which i was involved in a serious accident on the freeway. My car was only 5 months old when this accident occurred. This car was purchased because it had been equipped with 4 airbags, which included head protection. This accident occurred on february 19, 2003. I was hit by a semi truck, mainly on the drivers side, to which none of the 4 airbags deployed. Hyundai had been contacted, to which they claim there was no possible fault of the manufacturer. I am permanently disabled due to this accident, which left me with a brain injury as well as numerous permanent issues. We are working with senator timothy grindell in the state of ohio, to make "road rage" (which had been the reason for this accident), in trying to make road rage a punishable crime in the state of ohio. We have not been compensated in any way from hyundai motor company, not even another vehicle, since my car had been totaled. Can you please tell me if anything can be done since i recently found out that there has been a recall on the exact part that they found to be faulty, in that none of the air bags deployed. I am eager to get some kind of information, with the hopes of helping others in the future, in that these cars are unsafe, and that hyundai will not take any kind of responsibility in this case. I appreciate any kind of help in my case, thank you very much!

The airbag sensor in my 2002 hyundai elantra gt does not work.the dealer says this is because the module got wet due to coffee being spilled onto it.the sensor sits somewhere under the cup holder.liquid can get into it via the gear selector.dealer says this is owner abuse and wants $1200 to repair.to me, this is a design defect because it should be expected that some liquid may spill from a cup in the cup holder.even if we replace the module, since it is not sealed, there is noguarantee that something won't spill on it in the future.abl.pco

Complaint regarding the tether locks attached to the back seat of the car that holds the car seat.*mr while taking a turn, consumer's son fell off from car seat.upon inspection of consumer, it was found that tether lock which hold car seat had broken.*la

My clock in the dashboard blinks and loses time.i took the car to the dealership and was told that the wiring harnesses in the doors of the car had corroded and caused shortages occasionally in the dashboard.i was told this could affect the clock, the dashboard lights, and possibly the headlights.we have also had problems with our headlights staying on after they were turned off and the key was removed from the ignition.the cost of this job would be $900.i'm just very concerned that i will be driving at night and my headlights or dashboard lights will fail, causing a very dangerous situation.

Not long after purchasing the car from jones junction hyundai bel air, i noticed that the headlight/windshield wiper stalk was having problems.sometime the headlights and the dashboard lights would not work properly. At night, the lights for the dashboard would go out. The stalk had problems. Also, the windshield wipers, the fluids would not squirt properly to effectively clean my windshield as it should.these are 2 separate problems that i have noticed over the years.

I have replaced my headlights approximately nine times since purchase.

February 2009 i received a recall notice pertaining to my hyundai elantra 2002-the electrical wiring under the drivers seat having something to do with the airbag deployment. I took my car in and they did the recall work and no problem. Next morning, i go out to my car and turn the key and it is dead!!! nothing !!! so i gave it the all or nothing jiggle of this that and the other thing-and alas! it started. I brushed it off as a fluke-this has now happened four times within a month and today it is still sitting where i parked it this morning. I called the hyundai dealer twice today just to pick his brains and give me some idea as to what it might be causing this-the battery is new, tried jumping it earlier today. The shifter does not seem like it wants to move at all even depressing the brake pedal-the mechanic suggested it might be the electronic switch for the shifter-this made sense since the wiring correction is located in the same general area. Perhaps others are experiencing this same thing.

Very dangerous: the vehicles shutsdown while driving without any warning.dashboardblinks and engine shuts down causing lost of steering and power, slowing car in heavy traffic with vehicles behind.this has happened several times.mechanics can't solve issues. On the internet, similar incidents have beenreported by other hyundai drivers . The crankshaft position sensor, idle control valves, and in/out output sensor transmission are reported as possible problems.in any event is a very dangerous condition.problem should be studied and reported.it happens not only to this model, but on other hyundai vehicles.

The contact owns a 2002 hyundai elantra. While driving approximately 20 mph, the vehicle stalled, lost power steering and there were no warning lights illuminated on the dashboard. The fuel gauge also failed to operate normally. The vehicle was towed to an authorized dealer. The technician performed diagnostic testing and was unable to detect the failure; however, the vehicle began operating normally. On two separate occasions an independent mechanic tightened a component on the computer system and adjusted the relay switch. The vehicle currently is not operable and has not been repaired. The failure mileage was 48,200 and the current mileage was unavailable.

I noticed some time in 2014 that my driver's side power windows began to falter after it had rained or precipitated in some form.the driver's side power window assembly would get wet when the door was open during normal operating use, such as entering or exiting the 2002 hyundai elantra gls.this should not have occurred.the manufacturer should have, in my opinion, produced vehicles which could tolerate a measure of precipitation in the interior of the car through normal use, such as entering and exiting the vehicle.i complained to hyundai usa about the problem, but they will not fix the problem at no cost to me.i believe that this is a known manufacturing defect.i will seek to know what the nhtsa will do about the problem. I think that the car should be recalled for hyundai to fix the problem.

2002 elantra has been blowing bulbs since the car was 2wks.i have replaced all bulbs in the car appox. 40times.hyundai has replaced bulbs and now even charges me for bulbs i have beenfighting this for 3 years now.hyundai says there is no short.meanwhile my trunk alarm has never worked.manfrediy where i bought the car new said the factory installed alarm does not alarm the trunk.guiffre hyundai said the trunk was alarmed and just doesn't work.give me a break, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to know that there is a [xxx] short in the car.the regional office did nothing and did not even meet with me.i was told to call an arbitration comp. The contact owns a 2002 hyundai elantra. The contact stated that the traction control sensor warning light flickered and the bcd player would not stop operating unless there was a bcd inside. The vehicle was taken to a dealer, but was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 91,000. The vin was not provided.

Brought 2002 hyundai elantra-july of 2002-in a little less than a year after losing 3 days of work due to my car stalling and not being able to start i was told the battery was bad, they put in new battery-in a little less than a year car die i was told the battery was shot, there was a lot of white battery acid all over the battery post and cables, and was told my battery cables were coroded and fried the length of the cables and had to be replaced, and they only had 1 cable in stock, when i asked the service tech why no cables in stock he said they do about 5 of these a day because the batterys are that bad.

I have replaced the headlights and/or flood lights 7 times, within the last 3 years.i've questioned the service representativerepeatedly, believing therewas a short in the car.finally, the last service representativeadmitted that there wasa defect particular to this make and model car. I've researched to see if there wasa recall, as i believed this wasa severe safety hazard.if this was a common occurrence to this car what guaranteewas there that both headlights won't go out at the same time. Found several references to other owners havingsimilar problems with the electrical system.i have foundinformation of a recall.

While driving in the rain the door light and door chime came on for no reason. Went into the ditch trying to find what was happening. Every time i washed the car or drovein the rain the same things happened . Had to disconnect the battery and wait a day or two until something dried. Heard that hyundai had a manufacturing flaw in that they have not sealed the pillar and fender area ,thus water just ranto the electrical wiring. It shorted out thebattery, which i had to replace ,and could not drive in the rain or washthecar.

Vehicle shuts down without prior sign of malfunction. Has occurred several times.

Oil pan drain plug stripped. I have been changing oil by myself. I have a toyota camry also which i change oil myself. So there is no abuse regarding oil pan drain plug. It has stripped completely. I had to replace the oil pan which cost almost $400.00.

Dt:2002 hyundai elantra, consumer took vehicle to a local garage for an inspection, on 6-20-05, andmechanic rotated/ balanced tires, andreplaced two tires with new ones. Also, replaced fuel injection system/ replaced a gasket/ front wheels were aligned/ steering wheel was centered, and they checked caster and camber angles.thenmechanictold consumer that vehicle passed ny state inspection.the consumer started traveling from ny to va on 6-30, and on 7-2 vehicle stalled, check engine light came on, vehicle had completely stopped although engine was still running, oil gauge warning light came on, it went up to highest point. This was first time vehicle stalled.the consumer had the vehicle towed to a mechanic whoran a diagnostic test on the vehicle and told consumer that he should take it to a dealership because of the warranty.dealership ran a diagnostic and then replaced radiator and radiator pump. They told consumer that was reason for vehicle overheating and stalling.this was after consumer was told by dealership that vehicle was safe to drive.so consumertraveled back home, roads were wet and it was late in da. The check engine light came on again.as soon as light came on the speed reduced but the engine itself was still on but, the vehicle was not able to move at a safe speed and stalled. Consumer's and his family lives were in dangered although there were no actual accidents.vehicle was towed to the dealership. They told consumer that problem was with transmission. There was a hose not connected properly which caused vehicle to leak transmission fluid.

Vehicle "surges" to very high rpm without warning. Has been to dealer x3 for repair/adjustment. Already a recall on 2002 hyundai elantra, but the 2002 elantra that i have is past the recall date of jan. 31, 2002.my car, #was built in march 2002 so not covered on recall campaign #05-01-001-1. Crack between port #3 and #4 on the manifold.the part has been installed on the car so i expect to be reimbursed cost of part and labor to install.

My 02 hyundai elantra has two bad cracks in the exhaust manifold.i know that other 02 elantra's had a recall, and i think it should be extended to include all the bad manifolds.this is a major safety hazard because it can lead to carbon monoxide poisoning.within a short period of time when the vehicle is stopped in traffic, or stuck in winter conditions carbon monoxide can build up inside the vehicle leading to death of the driver and passengers.

I own a 2002 hyundai elantra. When i bought it used in 2005 it ran very quiet. A few months ago i noticed it seemed a little louder. Last week the check engine light came on so i took it to my mechanic to have a diagnostic. Found out there is a crack in the manifold. I am aware that many other 2002 elantras have this problem, and that there was actually a recall on some of them. My car however was not included in this recall. I contacted hyundai consumer assistance dept. And was sent to their dealership to have the car checked out after which i was told that the crack in my manifold did not match the ones that the recall covered. How ridiculous. Obviously their is a problem with all of the manifolds in these 2002 elantras other wise they would not all be cracking. The repair is very expensive and i think it isunfair that any vehicle owner should be made to pay for the repair being told the crack is due to wear and tear.

2002 hyundai elantra. Consumer writes in regards to recall notice concerning front steering or control mechanisms, rust and potential failures *tgwthe consumer stated on march 10, 2010, she went to the dealer after receiving a recall notice.upon inspection, it was determined the parts did not need to be replaced.on january 31, 2012, the same parts that were the subject of the recall failed. The consumer stated when the steering failed, the vehicle was violently forced into oncoming traffic which nearly resulted in a head-on collision and was then violently forced back across the lane in which she had been traveling, narrowly missing another vehicle. The vehicle had to be towed as it could not be driven.the consumer had other problems such as the engine light illuminating, due to an internal failure of the catalytic converter and a broken rear spring, as well as weak struts.

Whenthe air conditionerselector was set on floor, air blewon the floor andwindshield, causing windshield to fog up, obstructing driver's view. Dealer had inspected vehicle six times, and denied there wasany problem with the air conditioner. Consumer applied for lemon law.

I have had to replace the low beam headlights 4 times in the past 3 years.

I have replaced my headlights approximately nine times since purchase.

The inside of the headlight assembly has fogged up causing the brightness of the lamp to diminish to the point where i feel it is dangerous and i need to replace the entire assembly. I have spoken with hyundai at the corporate level and they basically said that there is no way to clean the inside of the assembly and i would have to replace them at my expense. This is a major safety issue.as with other elantra owners i have complaints about the headlights constantly needing replacement.

Short headlight bulb life (less than 12 months).

While driving in a thunder storm interior and dimmer headlights went out at same time. There was no warning. Dealer was not notified.

Airbag light came on and remains on steady as i was driving in residential section today, around 10pm. It has been 104 degrees with humidity factor the last couple of days.

2002 elantra headlight bulbs burn out every two months. First one then two weeks later the other, just like clockwork. I have never seen anything like this, auto headlamps generally last for years! very expensive and annoying problem.

The contact owns a 2002 hyundai elantra.both of the headlights continue to burn out and have been replaced five times.the dealer stated that the vehicle was no longer under warranty and is the contacts responsibility.the current mileage was 53,247 and failure mileage was 12,000.updated 3/25/08 the consumer stated replaced 5 times for each headlight fora total of 10 headlights. Updated 03/25/08

I have to continually replace my headlights.since purchasing the car in 2002 i have had to replace the bulbs at least 3 times a piece.dealer told me it was the bulbs i was buying but i am buying hyundai bulbs.this problem is very annoying.it is hard to replace driver side by myself.very expensive to take to dealership to be changed.also there is no way of knowing when the bulb burns out, had to wait for cops to pull me over to find out.

Headlights burn out excessively.every 1-2 months, one burns out and alternates between left and right side.

I have had to replace the bulbs in the headlights of my 2002 hyundai elantra gt at least 4 times (this will be the 5th) as they continue to burn out on a regular basis. In comparison to older cars that i have previously owned, i have never had to replace the lamps with such frequency.

Dt*:the contact stated upon inspection of the vehicle it was noticed the headlights were cloudy.the dealership determined this was not a manufacturer defect.the manufacturer was alerted.

Headlights on my vehicle keep burning out to rapidly. This will be the 4th time i have replaced them so far. I have used hyundai bulbs to very expensive bulbs and the result is the same and the driver side bulb is very difficult to change.

I've had to replace both headlights twice since i bought the car in 2002.

The headlights on the car keep failing which prevents me from driving safely or driving at all.as of this date the headlights have failed 4 times now; twice on each side with the latest occurring this past week.i contacted the dealership (rowe, 207-854-2555) that has been replacing the lamps and asked for an explanation as to why the headlights keep failing.they said they didnt know but insinuated the lamps were cheap.he then stated the dealership would continue to replace the bulbs at no cost until the warranty expires.this is obviously not an acceptable situation.if the real problem is as simple as the lamps being defective or cheap they need to be replaced with a quality product before someone gets hurt or killed.

My headlights keep burning out. The driver's side bulb is very difficult to change - not room for fingers to rotate bulb in and out. Replacement lights are expensive. Had never had this problem with any other car.

Headlight bulbs on my 2002 hyundai elantra burn out every few months. Most recently had to be replaced in september 2006 and again in december 2006. When i contacted the dealer, gary rome hyundai, holyoke, ma, (413) 536-4328, i was told that they would charge $90/hour to look at the problem and could not guarantee that they would find it.they suggested that the bulbs were being installed improperly, and also offered to limit work to 1/2 hour.

The contact owns a 2002 hyundai elantra.the fuel rail is leaking gas onto the engine and the check engine light remains illuminated.the dealer stated that this was a common failure and was caused by a manufacturer defect.the dealer performed a diagnostic, which showed that two sensors failed.the dealer stated that this was a very serious issue that could result in a fire.the contact was not allowed to take her vehicle home due to the risk of fire and the severity of the gas leak.hyundai stated that nothing more could be done because the part was out of warranty.the contact stated that they were not even interested in looking at the part.the vehicle has a 100,000 mile powertrain warranty; however, the manufacturer stated that this particular incident was not covered for that warranty.as a result, other components, such as the gasket, have blown.the manufacturer stated that there was no recall for this particular defect; however, there were recalls listed for similar fuel defects of the same presence of fuel leakage.those nhtsa campaign id numbers are 04v369000 and 04v178000.the failure and current mileages were 86,000.

(1) events leading up to the failurefuel tank was filled at local station the afternoon of 7/18/05.temperature was 102 f.(2) failure and its consequences, and car was at work between 7 am and 3 pm on 7/19/05 where it sat all day in the parking lot of my work location.temperature was 107 f.i noticed the back left rear corner leaking fuel at a fast drip rate.it appeared the fuel had been dripping for some time since the spill was around 1 foot in diameter.car was taken to local dealership after leak noticed. (3) what was done to correct the failure; i.e, parts repaired or replaced (and if old part is available)dealership told me the tank was overfilled and fuel had flooded a chorcoal canister that filters emissions from the gasoline.the canister required replacement.the tank had not been overfilled the day prior since the nozzle was left with the trigger locked back and clicked off when tank was full.i have used the same station and refill station for months now and this has never been an issue before.

My 2002 hyundai elantra gt developed a fuel leak which dripped just behind the left rear wheel. Associsted with this problem the engine began to stall and die. I took the car to my local dealer to have the problem investigated. The service department said that the leak could have been a result of my overfilling the fuel tank. I had just refuled the car but did not "top-off" the tank during the process. Since i am the original owner and the car has over 100,000 miles, i feel that i know how to put gas in it by now. The following hyundai part#s were replaced: 31420, 31430, 31453, 31135, 31155, 31190 (basically all of the fuel valves/canisters in the system). When i spoke to the service manager, after calling hyundai customer affairs, he informed me that the valves were replaced due to fuel saturation and as a prevenative measure.he also informed me, during our conversation, that overfilling of the fuel tank can and has resulted in similar failures in the past. I feel this damage to a fuel system as a result of normal fueling or component failure is a extreme fire hazard and safety concern.

I believe my vehicle should be eligible for a campaign acknowledged by hyundai to correct a defective fuel valve assembly. Consequence fuel spillage in the presence of an ignition source may result in a fire. Remedy dealers will install an additional fuel tank assembly valve. Owner notification began on june 30, 2004. Owners should contact hyundai at 1-800-633-5151 i took my 2002 elantra to the hyundai dealer to get my fuel valve assembly fixed however the dealer stated that my vin did not show up in the recall. My car has not rolled over and caught on fire yet but it does take me about 30 mins to fill my fuel tank from empty to full due to a defective fuel assembly valve. No matter what gas station i choose i can only put 1/2 gal of fuel at a time and the pump shuts off as if the tank is full. So i sit there forever filling my tank a little at a time.

My elantra's issue is with the gas tank getting over-filled at the gas pump due to a system failure that allows the pump to fill the car until the gas reaches the fuel spigot and then shutting off.not only does this result in gasoline pouring out of the filler cap, but it also floods the entire gas tank evaporation system.as a result of this, after the car has sat for several hours gas starts draining from the emission canister, leaving a 1 to 2 gallon fuel spill and causing the car to stall or run rough.the entire system ,including the canister, sensor, and solenoid wasreplaced in august 2008.on september 3 2008 i filled the car up with fuel and the car repeated the same symptoms.the dealership is replacing the parts but insist that the problem is filling the car with fuel too quickly.i strongly feel that this is a serious design flaw if the car cannot handle getting fuel at a pump without causing serious and expensive damage, and is an extreme safety hazard to allow these cars to be driven with the likelihood of a sizable flammable spill in spite of having all maintenance done on schedule by the dealership.i contacted hyundai's corporate office and they consider this a previously unreported issue.

We own a 2002 elantra and when pumping gas, it constantly shuts off after about 50 cents worth of gas and it takes forever to fill up the tank.pretty aggravating to say the least.

The vehicle's fuel pressure regulator failed and as a result fuel leaked into the engine compartment.*mr

When pumping gas, there seems to be a blockage of some sort.the gas pump keeps kicking off as if the tank were full.it takes a very long time to put a few gallons of gas in the tank.this happens at all service stations, every time gas is pumped.

We have a 2002 elantra and whenever you try to fill the tank up with gas, it constantly stops after just 25 cents or so and then you keep trying to fill it up and it stops every few seconds.it takes forever to pump a tank or even a half a tank of gas.very frustrating to say the least. *"tr

The contact owns a 2002 hyundai elantra . The contact stated that the fuel tank will not fill up with fuel and the fuel pump willshut off after5 seconds of less. The dealer was informed about the failure and they stated that the vapor canister must be clogged with gravel. The vehicle was taken to a private mechanic, whostatedthat it must be a design flaw. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 33000 and the current mileage was 33796.

While driving vehicle about 25 mph, the engine lights come on,power steering is removed and the engine turns off.while trying to restart the vehicle, the driver must press on the accelerator once which allows engine power to return and regain forward movement, however the rpm gauge fluctuates from below 500 to above 2000 and the engine shuts off again.the engine shutdown occurs every time the automobile is re-fueled.once the vehicle has started running and comes to a complete stop, fuel leaks out of the safety canister at an alarming rate.this problem occurs due to the tank's inability to alert the gas station fuel gun of the fuel level inside of the tank.in other words, the tank accepts more fuel than it is designed to assume (approximately 2 gallons) during every refuel.this is not only a safety or fire hazard for the current driver and passengers, but it affects any other vehicle or object surrounding the fuel spill.the fuel vapor is also an environmental and safety issue.the scent in the vehicle alone has caused nausea on several occasions.hyundai has replaced both oil valve cover gaskets, oil seal, exhaust manifold and gasket and various other warranty recall items...however the problem still exists and hyundai has stated that "i have to continue driving with this problem".they will not cover any further replacements (including a faulty fuel tank which their customer service representative in duluth claims is the irritant) even though i have purchased a 10yr/100,000mi plan b warranty to cover such items while purchasing my new 2002 hyundai elantra.the vehicle is 8 yrs old with less than 70,000 miles.

As i attempt to pump gas, the pump continuously stops as if my tank is full even when the gas gage reads empty.it takes 20 minutes to pump a full tank of gas.

In addition, the gasoline would intermittently spill back out from the filler tube. Each time i am going to fill up the gasoline tank, the machine stops and it acts as if the gasoline tank is full.i have to put one dollar at a time until the tank is full.

There is a terrible howling noise coming from the front end of the vehicle while driving on the highway.the rim's on the car are so flimsy that i have had to rims bent in the last 3 months.they can not handle non paved roads.th front seat belt does not retract properly causing the seal on the door to be torn when the door is shut.the gas mileage is terrible.supposed to be upwards of 35+ mpg on the highway and i only get approximately 24 - 26 mpg.the insurance on this vehicle is ridiculous!!you think that i had an audi.the cost of the insurance is the same.i have brought up my concerns with the dealer that i purchased the car from and they don't seem to think that there is a problem with the howling since they couldn't get it to do it while they were driving the car.the gas mileage they said would improve when the engine was broke in at about 20,000 miles.well i am past the 20,000 and the mileage has not improved.i am not at all happy with this car.i would get rid of it in a minute if i could get out from under the payments.

The engine would die and not restart while the vehicle was in motion.the vehicle would then be coasting down the road with no power brakes or steering.this made controlling and stopping the vehicle very difficult and dangerous.numerous visits to the hyundai dealership, thousands of dollars, and many replaced parts later, the hyundai dealership finally determined that an apparent defect to the charcoal canister assembly and canister close valve in the fuel system were causing the issue.

Filled the tank on saturday april8 2005 tank was not over filled car sat the rest of saturday and sunday ,just started leaking sunday afternoon left side of tank .this is a very dangerous situation for a gas tankto just start leaking for no apparent reason, after less than four years. After refueling, the car has difficulty starting. The car stall like it has flooded. After numerous attempts trying to start the car (the car sputters), it finally starts. There are several other hyundai elantra owners in this area have the same problem. The car initial started with difficulty refueling. After putting in 0.25 - $1.00 worth of gasoline, the pump would click off. Refueling could take up to 5-10 minutes to fill the tank. I have spent over $500.00 dollars trying to fix the problem. I have called hyundai of america and received little to no assistance.

The contact owns 2002 hyundai elantra. The contact stated whenever refueling the vehicle, the fuel would overflow and spray out of the filler neck onto the side of the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer who stated the failure was contributed to the fuel tank carbon canister. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the problem. The approximate failure mileage was 66,500.

My fuel tank assembly valve. It takes me a very long time to pump gas because the car shuts the pump off like my tank is already full. I even had gas spill out while i was still pumping.i started to become very concerned when i did a little research on this particular incident.what really got me concerned is when it said if this problem is not taken care of, if i were to get into an accident and my car overturned,it could potentially catch a fire! i have two children, and god forbid something like this happen when im in my car with my children.

Engine stops suddenly almost creating accident.cause ?

It is hard to fill the gas tank up. The fuel pump keeps shutting off and you have to slowly fill the gas tank up. You have to hold the pump to even get gas to fill the tank.

When pumping gas i can only pump about $1.50 worth of gas at a time before it starts coming back out and spilling everywhere.i have tried pumping gas with the car on, not safe i know, and it still only takes about $1.50 before it comes back out. I have spoken to multiple elantra owners and they all have the same issue. It takes about 20 minutes to fill up. The more gas you get in your tank, the less you can pump.from the research i have done online it's that the evap canistor has failed and it's pushing charcoal thru the fuel lines. What if that gets into the fuel tank and the pump sucks it up?don't think that would be a good thing.but the gas that comes out is starting to eat away the paint because it does it multiple times each time i'm refueling.my vehicle has high miles but alot of people that have this issue say they have below 100k miles.

The contact owns a 2002 hyundai elantra. The contact stated that while refueling, gasoline spewed out of the filler neck. The failure recurred numerous times. The vehicle had not been repaired. The failure and current mileage was 90,000.

While driving dashboard lights illuminated, causing vehicle to become inoperable. Dealer has serviced vehicle forsame problem several times; however, could not not remedyproblem.

The weather stripping on the front doors are losing the seal around both doors. Consumer is afraid that carbon monoxide may seep into the vehicle and cause health problems.this problem has occurred twice since owning the vehicle.

While driving 50 mph the hood became unlatched and flew open.the dealer was notified.*nlm

On 4/8/10 i took my 02 elantra in for the recall control arm rust they replaced both control arms on 5/17/10 my wife was driving down the road when the right tire fell off,the car came to rest in the middle of the road, the control arm fell apart we had it towed back to hyundai were we found out that the bolt was bad it also pulled the axle out of the transmission and to top that off they are refusing to pay for towing.

The contact owns 2002 hyundai elantra. The contact heard a clicking noise while driving approximately 60 mph. The vehicle stalled as transmission fluid spilled to the ground. The contact was able to coast unto the road shoulder and the vehicle was towed to a local repair shop where it was diagnosed as a hole in the transmission. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and would not assist with the repair due to the age of the vehicle. The failure and current mileage was 47,000.

Problems with vehicle severely pulling to the right. *mr there was a squealing noise, the tire in the right rear had worn, the left rear tire treads were gone (not wearing evenly), the belts squealed, the front wheel drive would cause the front to spin, but not in the rear, when the a/c was on high, the loud noise would be exhibited in the front, the vehicle pulled to the right, and the vehicle hesitated when the a/c was on. *sc

Dt*:the contact stated when recall work was performed on the manifold, the dealership determined the timing chain and transmission fluid needed to be changed soon.four days after the repair work, the vehicle was going 25 mph and the transmission would not respond.the vehicle coasted to the side of the road, smoke came from under the hood, and fluid was leaking under the engine.a tow truck was called, when the vehicle was moved, parts were on the ground.the dealership determined the transmission needed to be replaced.

The contact owns a 2002 hyundai elantra.the contact inspectedunderneath the vehicle and noticed oil leaking from the transmission.in addition, the control arms on both sides of the vehicle had holes and were corroded.the vehicle was taken to the authorized dealer for inspection and they stated that the control arm and subframe failed.the vehicle has not been repaired according to nhtsa campaign id number 09v125000 (suspension:front:control arm) due to the unavailability of the necessary parts for the repair.there is a massive back order for the parts.the technician recommended that the vehicle not be driven due to the safety risk involved.the failure and current mileages were 111,000.

While driving automatic transmission stuck between gears, andvehicle lurched forward, causingdriver to lose control.vehicle ran off the road due to this problem.

The car hesitates to go into second gear and revs really high in order to go into third gear.the car has been looked at twice from the dealer in which it was purchased and they reset a code the first time but it failed to fix the problem. The second time it wasn't able to be reset.but the mechanic finds no problems.

While driving, vehicle often gets stuck in first gear and revs excessively as if gears are not properly shifting out of 1st gear.dealer has seen vehicle twice. Third time dealer indicated that a program had to be established in order to fix vehicle.

Engine dies at anytime. Gear shifter will not go from park to drive. Vehicle was towed to dealer.dealer saidgear shifterbroke.

Dt: the contact's vehicle wasin an accident on march 3, 2005, the vehicle received damage to the right front wheel. Afterwards, the contact received nhtsarecall campaign 03v496000 onaugust 10, 2005. Since the vehicle was in an accident the insurance company advised the body shop to install an after market axleto correctthe problem. There have been no recall repairs madedue to the after-market parts being installed, andthe sensors were installed wrongly. The manufacturer has been contacted, and they didnot provide assistance.

My 2002 hyundai elantra's clutch has failed again after just 25000 miles.i have had the clutch replaced once, at which point the mileage was only 22000.i do not have bad driving habits, to which my entire family will attest.no one else has ever driven my car.the cost to me of this problem was $800 the first time and has been estimated to be between $1150 and $1250.i broke down on the highway and was lucky to make it to the side of the road before the vehicle stopped moving.i have researched this particular vehicle and found that many others have suffered similar problems with the clutch, yet hyundai has made no attempt to assume blame for the problem or to help with repair costs.the only way they have ever provided reimbursement is if the owner threatens legal action.

Consumer hyundai elantra clutch failed while driving. Consumer had vehicle towed to dealer where they told consumer that it was not included in warranty.the primary reason the consumer purchased the vehicle was for it's 10 year/100000 mile warranty.

Clutch failurei purchased the car new and at 42,196 miles the clutch went out, dealer claims normal wear. The car now has 73,026 miles and againthe clutch needed replaced. This started when the replaced clutch had less then 29,000 miles on it. Again they claim normal wear. The clutch pedal has no pressure when engaged and there is no adjustment. Customer service or dealer will do nothing and i had to pay for another clutch. If you look at the list of complaints on this problem it has to be a defective clutch or transmission. I had over 130,000 miles on my other car with no problem. I also taught driving and know how to operate a clutch.thank you.

2002 hyundai elantra gt manual transmission - replaced clutch on 10/13/09 after clutch went.replaced master cylinder a couple of months ago after no grab on clutch again!!on way to job interview last night and clutch pedal stuck, fluid leaking from under car, lost all control of vehicle & had to have someone pick me up!!!!i see i am not only one with this problem as your website it riddled with similar complaints!!someone has to do something soon before someone is seriously injured and/or killed if not already!!!!!!!hyundai needs to make this serious situation right!!!!!

Dealer attempted multiple times to fix gear shifting problems.engine revs very high before shifting gears.sometimed won't shift at all.problem is intermittent.check engine light comes on during problem but goes away before i can get to the dealer.

2002 hyundai elantra.srs airbag light came on instrument console.the passanger seatbelt tensioner detonated about a month later.about two months after that the driver side seat airbag deployed on its own while i was driving..no impact whatsoever.car now in dealer for module replacement and aribag replacement.

Dt*:the contact stated while driving down a hill at 60mph in icy conditions, the brake pedal was depressed.however, the vehicle did not slow down and as a result, the vehicle struck a guard rail with minor damage sustained.the police were notified and a written report was provided.the vehicle was towed to an impound yard to await inspection from the insurance company.additionally, while attempting to use the latch system, the seat belt covered the latch bracket.

The driver's side seat belt would not retract.the defect was repaired under the factory warranty on 1/14/04.

Dt*: the contact stated the driver's side front seat belt would not retract or hold correctly. If the vehicle were in an accident it would not protect the occupant properly.the service dealer stated the spring would not catch and the seat belt needed to be replaced.

The contact owns a 2002 hyundai elantra. The contact stated the front driver's side seat belt failed to retract. The dealer and manufacturer were notified; however, they provided no assistance. The contact expressed concern for the safety issue involved. The approximate failure mileage was 91,000. The consumer was informed the seat belts were not covered under the extended warranty plan. Mva 7/27/04 passenger side impact to my cardriver seat belt did not lock i hit the steering wheel passenger side airbag did not deploy.

Seat belt failure.

Accident on 4/13/05 drivers side seat belt did not restrain driver causing driver to slam into steering wheel hitting head first and then chest area.the results were severe bruising to the chest area.the seat belt has not been repaired because hyundai says that there is nothing wrong with it.

While driving seatbelt locked up and would not release until unlockingthe seatbelt. Dealer has been notified, repairedand replaced it.

*laabl.pco

When braking or accelerating, the driver's seat slides forward and backward slightly.i have been told this is "normal", but none of my previous cars had this problem and, frankly, it makes me feel unsafe.

The driver seat was loose.the manufacturer and thedealer refused to fix this problem, and stated that this was normal.scc

The vehicle was in a rear end collision.the driver side seat back had reclined backwards upon impact, whichresulted in the driver sustaining neck and back injuries.tsscc

Driver seat position lock comes loose while driving and seat slides back on its own. Near miss or crash.

The contact owns a 2002 hyundai elantra. The contact stated that while driving at unknown speeds, the vehicle would lose brake fluid. In addition, the contact stated that the brakes would fail to respond. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 165,000.

Consumer complained about abrake problem.a recall notice was mailed toconsumeroneyear after vehicle was in an accident and the original owner was killed. The owner'sfather wanted to know why did itso long to be notified about the recall.

My husband and i are the owners of a 2002 hyundai elantra gt, and are the only owners of record and have maintained the vehicle in a reasonable manner.on friday, december 4 2009, i was driving the vehicle at approximately 30 mph approaching a left turn light, when i needed to stop suddenly to avoid hitting a car that stopped abruptly in front of me.when i applied the brakes, i heard a loud noise and the car began to pull to the left, placing my vehicle into the on-coming traffic lane.fortunately, my vehicle did not hit any other vehicles or roadside obstacles.after coming to a full stop, i managed to negotiate the left turn, in order to move the vehicle out of a 5-point intersection and into a safer area. Once the vehicle was engaged in the turn, i heard metal grinding against metal.i pulled the car off of the road immediately into the first available turn off, which happened to be a church parking lot.upon inspection of the vehicle, it became apparent that the vehicle was no longer in a serviceable condition and would need to be towed.the lower control arm on the passenger side of the car was significantly torn between the shock mount and the ball joint.the corrosion damage is significant on the interior of the arm.it looks as if it blew up.there is still a small portion that is still attached but it is completely immobile.the tire is pushed up against the wheel well.we are very concerned about the lack of cooperation that we have received from hyundai corporate office recall division.they have not agreed to fix any damage to the car as a result or reimburse expenses incurred due to the incident.to make matters worse, they claim the reason we didn't get a notice about the recall is because they didn't want everyone to come in at the same time so they are spacing it out!it's completely irresponsible of them to not notify the consumer of this defective product!i am 6 months pregnant and often drive my 2 yr old!

Brakeswore out at 5,568 miles.dealer stated that it was normal procedure. The consumer heard a rattling sound in the rear of the vehicle when the brakes were applied.the dealer's technician resurfaced both rear drums and adjusted the brakes.

Brakes locked up and skidded for approximately 50 ft. At below speed limit causing rear end collision. Car bumper was punctured by tail pipe of vehicle in front and air bags did not deploy.

Brake problems, consumer doesn't exactly the problem, but will provide further information.

When the brakes were applied, the vehicle experienced extended stopping distance. On several occasions, while parked the engine revved up, which caused the consumer to hit another vehicle.

Since the purchase of my car (i bought it new), it has a problem in which in cold weather (below about 35 degrees fahr), the brakes are very tight and do not work properly for the 1st 2-3 minutes.as the car warms, brake function returns to normal.an internet search showed multiple owners of hyundai's and other vehicles with similar complaints, and your office issued a recall of saturn sky and pontiac solstice vehicles in 2008 for an identical problem (recall number pe08016).please investigate--it appears to me that hyundai elantras such as mine should receive a similar recall.

Vehicle brakes continuously squeal, when they are depressed.the brake pads are not worn per the dealership. The dealership replaced the master cylinder, cause the brake pedal was going all the way to the floor. The cause of the squealing noise is unknown.ts

Driving 25 mph - approached stop sign - brakes failed completely, no pedal, pumped brakes, no petal and no stopping - no warning, no brake light on dash - ran through a stop sign unable to stop - no one was coming fortunately - pulled over to side of road - has vehicle towed to dealership.was advised my vehicle was 3 months out of warranty and repairs would cost $1400.00 to replace a leaking abs anti lock brake module.i questioned why all brakes failed at once without warning since this is a dual master cylinder system which should segregate braking front from rear.i also questioned why such a serious defect would not be covered since this car only has 40,000 miles, is 3 months beyond the 5 year applied warranty, and reportedly has a 10 year, 100,000 warranty.i am concerned because we have another exact same year and model car in our family.i called the hyundai 800 line for customer support.they advised me they would look at it and get back to me within 2 business days.

Consumer states that when trying to apply the anti lock brakes brakes will lock up, causing extended stopping distance. Dealer notified.

No matter how much pressure is applied to brakes, pedal descends to the firewall.dealership is unable to detect cause after several repairs.these brakes are hydraulic, no abs.they have been bled to see if that would increase the pressure.consumer says that when applying the brakes, it feels like your pushing on a sponge with air in the system.*scc

At less than 11,000 miles, my elantra's front brake rotors had to be turned and machined.new brake pads were also installed.now at 22,000 the front rotors are warped again and are too thin to machine again.they have to be replaced.we feel these are defected from the manufacturer because of the alloy used in these rotors being poor quality.if a dealership has 40 rotors sets in stock, there must be a heavy demand for these.i am in process of working w/ hyundai on this issue.this is a huge safety concern.

I had the vehicle inspected on march 3, 2007, itpassed inspection. On march 23, 2007lost thebrakes. Upon dealer'sinspection of thebrakes, they found the pads came completely detached from the shoes. Also, the wheel cylinderswere leaking. The brakes and wheel cylinders were fine3 weeks prior to them blowing apart. On 11/03/05 i had an accident where i rear ended another vehicle.i did not realize exactly what happened at the time of the accident, but did tell the police something was wrong with either the brakes or the tires. I just had a very uncomfortable feeling when attempting to stop!i felt as though the vehicle was coasting. The damage to my vehicle was $1,385.00 and i have no idea of the damage to the other vehicle.i subsequently discovered, after duplicating the incident, my foot was on both the brake and accelerator.the brake pedal, on the hyundai elantra, is 2.25 inches from the accelerator.a similar incident resulted in a 424,000 vehicle recall and correction by ford motor co. In their case the relationship was 1.95 inchesthis distance to the accelerator, on the elantra, was not the major issue, the brake pedal is only one inch above the accelerator and when fully braking the brake is one inch below the accelerator.when you combine the two the end result may be devastating. I have a second vehicle, a hyundai sonata, in this one the brake is 3.25 inches from the accelerator and also is 2.25 inches above the accelerator.upon braking the brake pedal remains .50 inches above the accelerator.no problem!

On october 28th, 2016 the lower, driver's side, front control arm disintegrated while my wife was driving her elantra in a parking lot. She was making a right turn to leave the lot when she lost control of the car as it made a "terrible grinding noise."the next day i removed the wheel and discovered the control arm was torn in two sections and badly corroded. I went to two hyundai dealers to track down a new part. Neither dealer mentioned the fact that this model hyundai had been recalled for precisely this problem. When i learned of this problem i contacted hyundai motors. They informed me that the recall only applied to vehicles purchased or registered in the so-called "salt belt" states. My wife bought this car new in colorado and has never driven it in the "salt belt." yet it suffered the same corrosion and failure as described in the recall bulletin. This is a very dangerous failure because the corrosion is inside the control arm and cannot be detected by a normal visual inspection. I suspect that the failure that showed up years ago in the "salt belt" cars is now appearing in older cars in other parts of the country. Hyundai apparently does not give a [xxx]. I suggest the nhsta impose a nationwide mandatory recall of these vehicles. If it occurred at highway speeds this failure would result in immediate loss of control, resulting in severe injury or death for passengers in the car. This vehicle is a one owner car that was garaged all its life. It was regularly serviced by a hyundai dealer. It shows no signs of excessive corrosion in any other area or part.i am outraged that hyundai chose to limit the recall of these vehicles to select states. This incident clearly demonstrates the problem is not limited to vehicles exposed to corrosive chemicals.information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

2002 hyundaielantra driver side ball joint noisy and lower control arms rusted. Repair shop states needs replacement asap a is not safe. I know of three others with same problem. Took to dealership for complaint as i thought is was a recall. They inspected and said not rusted through and was not covered. However they replaced some fuel cut valve that had a recall. Please note i can see day light through control arms. This is a major issue and someone is going to get hurt.

As i exited a freeway ramp i was coming to a stop to make a turn. My front lower control arm on the driver side broke and it popped my driver side cv axle. My whole tire castered in against the wheel well and cambered outward. My car was barely movable. My control arm had completely corroded through.

I am an owner of a 2002 hyundai elantra. In 2009 the passenger side lower control arm of my car rusted and broke in half, which i had repaired at my expense. Shortly afterward, i received a recall notice about the lower control arms and took my car in to have it serviced. Instead of replacing the defective parts, hyundai drilled a hole for water to escape and put a wax coating on the control arms, which would later wear off. After receiving my car back, i was under the assumption that there would no longer be an issue with the lower control arms, as i do not recall being told in person nor in writing that i should continue to monitor the status of said parts. Additionally, after reviewing my receipt, it does not state anything about further maintenance of the lower control arms. On march 5, 2013 while traveling on the pennsylvania turnpike, a major highway, my driver side lower control arm broke in half, almost causing me to get into an accident. I was lucky enough to get off to the side of the highway without an accident. After having my car towed to my mechanic, he diagnosed the problem with the control arm and recommended that i have it towed to the hyundai dealership to be repaired. In my conversations with hyundai employees, hyundai dealership employees, and my own mechanic, i have discovered that this is not an isolated incident. Thus it is very disconcerting as a consumer and a human being to know that hyundaihas known about the defect and the fact that the recall was not a complete fix, and has done nothing to rectify the situation, whereby putting many peoples' lives in danger.i think it is imperative that all owners of these cars be contacted to warn them about the safety hazards they possess.

I've owned my current 2002 hyundai elantra since 2002 (i'm the original owner) and my previous car was also a hyundai. I've told many people what good cars they are. Last week i noticed some "play" in my wheel and planned to get an alignment done this week. On thursday night on my way home from work my car spun out of control and my wheels went in different directions.luckily i was turning down a road very close to my home so i was only going about 15 mph, my 6 and 3 yr olds weren't with me, and no other cars were coming in the opposite direction or this could have been extremely dangerous. I had my car towed to the local guy who informed me that my lower control arms were bad (one rusted and broken, the other with holes) and that this was likely a recall item and i should contact my dealership rather than pay him for repairs that might be covered (very nice guy). I found out this is a recall item.both hyundai consumer affairs and grappone hyundai let me know i was responsible for paying for the tow (it was $125) to get my car there, and for a rental vehicle while my car was out of commission. I had the car towed there on friday as quickly as i could. I called this morning at 9am to find out how long i need to get a rental for and after waiting for about 20 rings someone finally picked up the phone and let me know that nobody would even look at my car until monday and that i should plan on paying for a rental for at least a week. This will be the last hyundai i own and i'm very unhappy with the fact that a defect that could have killed me (i take the highway home most nights and just lost a sister in a car accident in june) now is going go cost me hundreds of dollars.i no longer feel safe in my hyundai and am very disappointed that a defect is costing me so much time and money.

The contact owns a 2002 hyundai elantra. While driving at approximate speeds of 35 mph, the contact noticed that the wheels were abnormally shaking. Upon further inspection, she found one of the drivers side tires was destroyed. The contact contributed the failure to an improper alignment performed on the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to the dealer for repairs. The current and failure mileages were 55,253. Updated 05/11/10.*lj

On jan16th,2010 my car became disabled while driving. Luckily, i was only driving about 5 miles an hour when i suddenly lost control of steering my car. After stopping on the road, i tried to drive to the side of the road and was unable to get the car to move. At that point, i called a local towing company and they towed my car to a local auto shop. When the shop opened on monday january 18th they called me to inform me that the part that failed on my car, the lower control arm, was actually under a manufacturer recall from april 2009 (hyundai recall #091).they then gave me a copy of the recall notice from alldatapro.com.i was never informed of this recall. I am the original owner of this car and have lived at my current address since april 2000. I have been notified of other recalls in the past by mail.at this point, the shop did a full safetyinspection of the car and i had the car towed to the dealership at which i purchased the car in 2002, mike kelly hyundai, butler pa.since the parts where on backorder, i waited almost 2 weeks for my car to be repaired.had i been informed of the recall, i would have been able to schedule this repair at a mutually convenient time, and before the worst of winter, which seemed to be a contributing factor to the corrosion that led to the failure of the control arm and only by luck was i not hurt or killed.the car was repaired by hyundai free of charge , as it was a recall. I am awaiting reimbursement for the towing charges.

Collapse of control arm and loss of steering while driving, never received recall notice.they need to get the recall out before someone is hurt badly.

The contact owns a 2002 hyundai elantra.the contact took the vehicle to a local repair shop for routine inspection.a technician stated that the power steering lines were leaking and needed to be replaced.the power steering pressure lines were replaced at the cost of $338.01.the manufacturer stated that they would only partially reimburse him for the repairs in the amount $173.46.the failure and current mileages were 29,438. Updated 10-07-08updated 10/15/08.

The contact owns a 2002 hyundai elantra. The contact stated that while driving at 25 mph, there was an abnormal noise as the vehicle veered from left to right. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The vin was unavailable. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 110,000.

I was traveling at 35 mph on a secondary road when all of a sudden i heard a snap and i lost my steering. Luckily i was able to safely navigate my car to the side of the road without further incident. My vehicle was towed to my mechanic, who said the right front lower control arm and ball joint were completely rusted and collapsed. Hyundai had issued a recall (#09v125000) for my vehicle due to reported complaints about this same condition, and i took my vehicle to a hyundai dealer in july 2009. After inspection, the only action they took was to install a plug kit and apply rust preventative and undercoating. Obviously this did not work in the long term. This is an extremely dangerous condition and if i had been on the highway or making a turn, this design and mechanical defect could have caused an accident resulting in serious injury or death. My repairs cost $590. I will contact hyundai directly to request reimbursement. I feel they should have been proactive in july 2009 and replaced the parts at that time.

The contact owns a 2002 hyundai elantra.the contact noticed erratic steering behavior while driving approximately 40 mph.after exiting the vehicle, he noticed leaking underneath the vehicle.the dealer stated that the failure was due to the power steering line.the vehicle was repaired.the manufacturer offered no assistance.the current mileage was approximately 47,700 and failure mileage was 46,155. Updated 10/14/08the dealer replace the power steering return pressure line. Updated 10/15/08.

The front lower control arm on my vehicle is rusted out, and is cracked on both sides. Local mechanic says it doesn't have long before it will fail. Researched price on internet and found there was a recall for that part. Dealer says that my vin isn't included in the recall, even though my car was sold and driven in the "snow belt" states that are listed, and kentucky also salts the roads during winter.my vehicle is obviously affected, but the dealer tells me to call hyundai, and hyundai tells me to go to the dealer. There are several other complaints about similar treatment, and there is little recourse offered. I was told that the nhtsa decided the details of the recall, but it was insufficient. This is a priority, my car could have a catastrophic failure any day (and thousands of other people too). The recall is campaign 091 front lower control arm corrosion.

While driving between 25 to 30 mphand going downand a curb the steering wheel failed to respond and remainedin the same position.this caused the vehicleto veer into oncoming truck.upon impact, neither of the air bags deployed.according to the consumer, under puerto rican law, vehicle would bereturned to the bank if dealerwas notified.

10/2008, i was driving down a steep hill and began to downshift, while braking. My car jerked and skidded at the bottom. I was able to get it to the side of the road. A flatbed towed it and determined that the front drivers side wheel/tie rod had broken. The mechanic noted some corrosion, but repaired what needed to be done. March 2009, i had new front tires placed and balanced. Shortly afterwards, i got a flat tire, had the spare put on and brought it back for replacement. The front end seemed out of alignment, so it was brought back to the mechanic for realignment. It was then they saw that the entire subframe was corroded and "dangerous" to drive. The front arms were bent and subsequently collapsed. The repairs at this time would exceed the value of the car and i am reduced to "junking" my 7 year old vehicle.

The driver side door leaked when it rained. The vehicle has been to the dealer four times for this same problem, but the water still leaks into the vehicle.the manufacturer is not aware of the problem. *nlm

2002 hyundai elantra with 69,692 miles, original owner; driving in school parking lot, the driver-side lower control arm broke in two, subsequent inspection shows it to have rotted through.tire was perpendicular to the vehicle.towed to hyundai dealer in natick, ma.have not heard back from dealer yet, but obviously need a new lower control arm and at least an inspection of passenger-side lower control arm.i have pictures of the damage.i expect this to be covered under 100,000 mile transaxle warranty; we'll see.this would have been catastrophic at highway speed. Updated 04/22/09.

I was coming up on a traffic light and was slowing down when the left lower control arm broke in half. Lost all steering, car had to be towed.

There is rust coming through the quarter panels in the front

While driving down a highway the hood simply popped open coming back smashing the windshield.

The whole frame is rusty.

*laabl.pco

Was traveling home at 6 pm and i was coming over a hill and a car stoped short i swerved to avoid collission and side swiped a telephone pole.the airbags went off and i was hit with a piece of sharpnal that went into my lip causing me to get stitches and has left my face disfigured.

Something hit car over driverside windshield and door during transport. Insurance totaled. Airbag light already on. Before settling with insurance co, bought tag and insurance. Bought car back from ins co. Drove until tag expired.can"t get salvage title until airbag light is fixed. Took it to hyundai dealership in montgomery al. Diagnosis (air bag control module), which is recall part. Talked with hyundai supervisor [xxx]. He told me that my car wasn"t in the recall number, but coincidentally my car needs the same recall part. Maybe they made mistake and left my car out.information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

My car paint started chipping it's been doing this since i bought the car in 2010. I've researched and many people have complained about there cars paint chipping. But unfortunately the dealership would do anything about it.

Hyundai elantra 2002 lower under carriage corrosion. Plus excessive body corrosion similar to toyota pickups.

My vehicle has control arm rust and perforations in the subframe, covered under an existing recall. Hyundai has admitted that the parts are covered under the recall, but states that they are unable to replace the subframe and control arms due to rust damage on the frame itself. Replacing the damaged portions of the frame will cost well over the price of the vehicle. If the subframe did not have to be replaced, the frame would likely hold for some time and not require replacement in the near future. The frame damage is only an immediate issue because the recall repair needs to be done.hyundai has offered me to either replace the frame damage at my own expense so they can complete the recall repair, or take a buyout equal to the kelly blue book value of the vehicle. Other compensation such as rental fees was refused. It has taken them ~25 days since receiving the vehicle to make this offer.

Car recalled for "salt belt corrosion" repairs in 2002. Original owner sold car back to hyundai dealership. Repairs were never done.when i bought this used hyundai elantra in late 2002, it had less than 13k miles on its odometer. It was serviced at a 2nd hyundai dealership until 2012, when its 10 yr/ 100 k mi warranty expired. Today, even though it still has < 100 k on its odometer, the entire underside of the vehicle is so badly rusted that i've been told by two different sources that the corrosion on the underside is so bad that, during a 50 mph or greater accident, it is likely the entire inside ofthe car could fall onto the highway, while it kept moving forward, decapitating everyone inside.jpg images of the extent of the corrosion on this vehicle are available at: www.hyundaidcm.com/web/activitydetails.aspx?activityid=7738650-4.my hyundai is unsafe to drive because hyundai never performed the mandated nhtsa service in 2002. Please take my case on..i've filled out the when did this happen? box below with the date when hyundai america had my elantra inspected by manly hyundai (2702 corby ave, santa rosa, ca 95402). Ever since this inspection, hyundai america has offered to pay me $ 1k to "take my car away". When i asked them why not $ 3k (it's high kelly blue book value), they informed me it "was a rust bucket".yes, my elantra is a "rust bucket", but only because of hyundai's failure to perform the repairs required in nhtsa's 2002 recall, that never got done.

I have a 2002 hyundai elantra with a recall of corrosion problem of the front lower control arm. I called one month ago for a appointment got a date of may 17 for inspection. April 16 my car broke down due to corrosion of the front lower control arm. I towed my car to hyundai they inspected my car both lower control arms one already bad the other no good and also the front subframe has to be replaced. They tell me there is a national parts shortage and will take up to a month to repair my car. Meanwhile i have no car.

I was driving in my town and i went to take a left turn and the next thing i knew my steering wheel jolted further to the left than i had turned it and i was in oncoming traffic. Luckily the oncoming car had enough time to stop and swerve out of the way to avoid a head on collision. At first i thought i had a flat tire, but upon closer inspection i noticed the bottom of the front right wheel was tilted inward on almost a 45 degree angle so that the hub cap was almost in contact with the pavement. I was about a mile from my house and was barely able to get the car back home with out swerving all over the road trying to steer. Upon inspection by a mechanic, who had to come to my home, there was a lot of rust underneath the car, especially on the lower control arms. I went online to research how much it might cost to fix and found that it had been a recall with hyundai, however i never got the recall notice. When i called hyundai consumer affairs to inquire, they claimed they didn't have my address and therefore i never received the recall. I bought the car used in 2004, it is now 2009, i do not believe there is any excuse as to why they should not have had my address and to why i did not receive a recall. Someone could have gotten seriously injured or killed. Hyundai will only cover the lower control arms and nothing else. None of the damage caused because of their negligence is covered and i can't even get a rental. I need new tires and new hub caps, there is a hole in my resonator from hitting the curb when i veered off the road, there are scratches on my rear and a cracked back headlight from the oncoming car brushing against my rear. Had i gotten the recall notice, none of this would have happened! the root cause is poor manufacturing, all other damages due to this should be reimbursed with out any hassle because hyundai should be grateful they have not killed anyone yet.

While driving at 30 mph, the front of my 2002 hyundai elantra collapsed. Transmission fluid everywhere, driver's front wheel at a right angle, and the subframe was broken completely in half. Lucky to be alive.

On 08/06/10 while driving my car in a residential area, i heard a loud "pop" sound come from the front passenger side of my vehicle.i immediately lost control of my car, but was able to pull into a parking lot.at that time, i discovered the front axle had actually broken (passenger side) and was dragging the ground.i called the dealership i bought my car from (a 2002 hyundai elantra- i contacted first team auto mall where i had bought it new), and advised the service personnel of what had just happened.they advised they would not be able to look at my car for several days, so i had it towed to another repair shop.i paid $632.89 to replace the lower control arm, including sway bar/link kit and re-alignment.on 09/28/10 i found a link online to a website detailing multiple recalls for 2002-2003 hyundai elantras- recalls had been recommended in several areas near me, but not in my particular state.the recall involved road salt causing corrosion to the lower control arm, which could contribute to breakage.the repair shop i took my car to that day could not tell me how the damage had occurred; they said they had never seen anything like that before.i also noticed on 09/28/10 a recall regarding leakage of brake fluid; i have had to refill the brake fluid in my car twice in the last 6 months (i had never had to do this before may of this year and i've had the car since 2002).i again called the dealership, who advised me there are no recalls associated with my particular vehicle.obviously, the problems described in the recalls are happening/have happened to my car, and possibly other cars in the state of virginia.i ask that you please re-evaluate the recall criteria and expand the recall to include any and all vehicles that could possibly be affected.if i had been on the interstate on the day my lower control arm broke, the damage would very likely have killed me and any other motorist unfortunate enough to be near me at the time.

Received recall notice 1 week ago from hyundai..on thursday night while driving home from work wheel "broke" off left front passenger side.. Called a hyundai dealership on fri. Morn and arranged a tow..vehicle arrived at dealership, dealership refused to take vehicle as there is a 4 week backorder. Called a second hyundai dealership was told that if the car was down hyundai has emergency stock to fix the vehicle..now have to pay for a second tow tothis dealership and also have to wait 1-2 weeks to have this fixed.

The contact owns a 2002 hyundai elantra. The contact stated the vehicle would not move as she attempted to accelerate from a traffic stop. The vehicle was towed to a local repair facility. Themechanic advised that the lower a frame assembly was defective and would need to be replaced. The vehicle frame was replaced at the contacts expense. Later, she received notification of nhtsa recall campaign id number: 09v125000 (suspension: front: control arm) and contact the manufacturer to advise the recall remedy was performed at her expense. The manufacturer advised she would be reimbursed for the repair but would need to submit all receipts and take the vehicle to the dealer for verification inspection. The dealer advised the front sub frame would need to be replaced. The contact advised the frame was already replaced. The contact was not reimbursed for the repair. No further repairs were made to the vehicle. The failure mileage was approximately 48,000 and the current mileage was approximately 52,000.

2002 hyundai elantra recall never received until 3/1/10.wheel fell off and went in ditch.had to have towed to garage and hyundai refused paymentof towing bill as towing was not included in recall.how was i supposed to get it to the garage.thank goodness no one was hurt; it could have been a serious accident.

Received safety recall notice regarding control arm & subframe on our 2002 hyundai elantra on wed. Mar 3,2010. Plan was to contact dealership on sat.(mar 6,2010) to schedule appointment for the following week. Received a panic call from my wife that something had snapped as she was crossing the rhinecliff bridge . Fortunately this occurred just as she was exiting the toll booth. Booth operator assisted her in getting car out of main flow of traffic and calling a tow truck. Tow truck driver confirmed that control arm had snapped as did the hyunadi dealer (where car was purchased). Dealer also said there were numerous other recalls concerning this vehicle that they would also be repairing. We were never notified of any of these with the exception of the control arm issue and in that case it failed within a few days of our notice. My question is why is it that were only notified a few days ago regarding such as serious issue when the original recall notice was dated nearly 11 months ago. And never notified regarding other recalls. By the way the dealer had the nerve to charge my wife for a loaner vehicle and said parts will need to be ordered. Obviously i am very thankful that neither my wife or anyone else were injured. But i remain furious that this ever happened in the first place.

The contact owns a 2002 hyundai elantra.while attempting to park the vehicle, the contact noticed that the frame shifted to the front tires.he also noticed that the control arm snapped when he attempted to stop the vehicle.prior to the failures, the vehicle would shake whenever the brakes were be applied.the vehicle was taken to the dealer and they stated that the control arm and the subframe needed to be replaced.the current and failure mileages were 130,000.

I heard a noise in the rear of my hyundai elantra 02 and upon bringing it to a service station was informed that the left rear cross member was corrode. Vehicle was towed to dealership and i was informed that the vehicle was not repairable. There was a current recall for this same issue, however the 02 elantra was not included in this recall. This left me with an 11 year old vehicle that had never been in an accident and had been housed inside a garage in inclement weather that was a total loss. This is an extreme safety issue.

While driving suspension broke.as a result, vehicle rolled over at least nine times.driver sustained major injuries.

I applied brakes at a stop sign and front driver side control arm collapsed. I had it inspected and treated under recall in 2009.

The contact owns a 2002 hyundai elantra. When the accelerator or brake pedals were depressed, a loud abnormal clunking noise emitted from the front end of the vehicle and the vehicle veered to the right. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic. The technician diagnosed that the lower control arm and ball joint failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 195,000.

When driving at highway speeds steering wheel violently shook. Dealer attempted to repairvehicle eleven times by doing an alignment and changing the tires. Cause of the problem had not been determined.

The contact owns a 2002 hyundai elantra. While driving at 25 mph, the passenger side control arm fractured. The steering wheel became difficult to steer. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed that the control arm fractured and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 115,000. Updated 07/27/16*lj

I was coming up on a traffic light and was slowing down when the left lower control arm broke in half. Lost all steering, car had to be towed.

I was driving the car and the moment i tried to stop at the traffic stop sign the lower arm control from the driver side broke and the wheel broke and the car slid. Thanks god it was at night and no cars were there. I remember the night before i was driving on the highway and nothing happened.i called my insurance and they sent me a towing truck to move the car. I didn't repair the car because it was a big mess. I took some pictures of it and the towing company guy also. I remember i went to hyundai dealer and i was looking for a part their and they took my vin number to check for the part but never told me about the recall. Can hyundai company give me some money back that i spent for towing and loosing my car because of this incident. I even paid for the car registration weeks before.

I recently bought a used 2002 hyundai elantra and discovered an abnormal amount of rust on the front control arms. In some places, holes had rusted through the control arms. Hyundai did a recall for over 150,000 of my exact model including those in the state which i live back in 2009. The recall was for this exact problem. When i took the car to the dealer, they inspected the vehicle and saw that my cars problem exactly matched all those others recalled. However, they informed me that my particular car was not under this recall despite having this identical problem. They gave me an estimate of $585 to replace the arms that were a manufacturer's defect. The arms have not broken yet but they very easily could break in the near future, potentially causing a fatal accident. The recall sent out in 2009 needs to be expanded since it did not include allthe cars having this problem.

Rear suspension cross member rotted out

The contact owns a 2002 hyundai elantra. The contact stated that while driving approximately 30 mph, the rear end of the vehicle swayed uncontrollably. The contact maneuvered to the side of the road. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic who stated that the rear driver's side lower control arm fractured. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the problem. The approximate failure mileage was 110,000.

*sc

There is a rust hole in my right lower front suspension control arm, related to hyundai recall# 091. I contacted hyundai customer assistance case#[xxx]. I was told i would have to pay for the repairs and then attempt to seek reimbursement but was told there is no promise of a refund. I said their recall clearly states vehicles being recalled are in the salt belt states or cars that are registered in these states. My car came from virginia but has been registered and driven here in michigan for two years and should be included in this recall. My request for assistance was denied. All these vehicles were built with poor quality metal components, there are no vin. Break points and should not matter where vehicle is located as vehicles move from state to state. I should not and will not wait for an incident to occur. I will pay for this repair to assure my families safety. I contacted my local dealer ann arbor automotive and talked to bethany patterson in service and emailed here pictures of the defective component(we have the email confirmation). She stated the service manager would review and get back to me. Three weeks later and no contact. I also took the car to them at ann arbor automotive which is my closest hyundai dealer in ann arbor michigan just to show them the failure which is visible with the steering turned without putting on a lift. The service manager would not come out to look at, they asked me if i had an appointment and then told me i would have to leave the car for at least 3-5 days just to look and contact hyundai with no assurance of anything being done. What a joke. I have tried to contact you buy phone but the calls will not go through, do you still have a phone? there are more procedures that have to be done related to this recall but right now i have to replace this one part to make the car safe for my family. Please help everyone with this.information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

The contact owns a 2002 hyundai elantra. The contact stated that while driving 55 mph and attempting to decelerate, the vehicle exhibited a loud banging noise. Suddenly and without warning, the steering seized and the front passenger side dropped to the ground.the contact inspected the vehicle and discovered that the control arm was severely corroded and fractured in two pieces. The manufacturer advised the contact that the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign id number: 09v125000 (suspension: front: control arm) and also, the extended warranty would not cover the corrosion failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and the current mileage was 66,026.

The contact owns a 2002 hyundai elantra. While at an independent mechanic for routine repair. The mechanic stated that the front lower control arm bushings were corroded and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vin was invalid. The failure mileage was 153,248.

The contact owns a 2002 hyundai elantra. The contact stated that while driving 35 mph, there was a loud abnormal noise coming from the front driver side tire. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 165,000.

The contact owns a 2002 hyundai elantra gt. The contact received a recall notice for recall 09v125000 (suspension: front:control arm). The contact was concerned because two dealerships did not have the parts available for the recall repair. The failure mileage was approximately 78,300. The current mileage was approximately 80,000.

I applied the brakes at a stop sign and the front driver side control arm collapsed . I had it inspected and treated under recall in 2009.

2002 hyundai elantra. Consumer states vehicle has faulty lower control arms *tgwthe consumer stated the lower control arm failed twice.the consumer became of aware of recall and the dealer replaced the lower control arm free of charge the second time.the first time, the consumer went to a repair shop and paid at his expense. The consumer was also informed the air bag light was on, all four struts needed to be replaced as well as the rims and tires.

The steering wheel and front end shakes at speeds over 65 miles/hr and the vibration can be felt in the car. *nlm

2002 hyundai elantra.consumer writes in regards to salt belt corrosion recall problems.the consumer stated she was never notified of the recall. Hyundai claimed it was because she was not the original owner. The dealer inspected the vehicle and determined the corrosion was too severe for her to drive the vehicle.

Collapse of control arm and loss of steering while driving, never received recall notice.they need to get the recall out before someone is hurt badly.

I have noted a recall #09v125000 related to this make/model/year but for some reason my car with the exact problem is not part of the recall.my right front control arm colapsed. It was completely rusted through.with that side fixed i traveled about 3 miles and my left side control arm broke.my mechanic and iwere complexed, but after research i found this problem exist and recalls issued.after contacting hyunda they said this vehicle vin# was not covered.i don't understand how this life threatening problem was not part of the recall.something in the records of this car must be in error.

I had to put on the brakes hard to stop from hitting a car that stopped short.the car jerked and when i began to proceed there was clearly something wrong with the front end.i got the car to our local dealer who is just a mile away from where this occurred and after the car was inspected was told that the front end came within 1/2" of corroded metal from breaking off.there was only 1/2" of metal left holding it in place. I was told the front control arms were both "annhilated" and were completed rusted out.i have to replace both of them at a cost of more than $1000.this car was purchased in new hampshire and spent 2002-2008 in new hampshire subject to the salt and winter conditions.it only has less than 85,000 miles on it and was treated well and serviced routinely.like other consumers, who have reported this issue, i feel that this should not have happened and that there is clearly a defect on the front control arms which allows them to become subject to corrosion.luckily i was able to drive just 1 mile to the dealer who will be performing service, but should this have happened while further away, i was told i was one pothole away from the whole front end falling off.it goes without saying that severe damage and potential personal harm could have occurred if the car had been in a collision or worse, if the control arms had broken free while on the highway or at increased speeds.this is clearly dangerous and i had no reason to think that a car that's 7 years old could suffer something like this under normal conditions.

I have a 2002 hyundai elantra gls that has been garage kept since i purchased it brand new off the dealer lot. I am currently having my mechanic repair a right (passenger side) suspension control arm for my from wheel. It was rusted almost completely through and according to my mechanic would have caused a catastrophic failure where i would not have been able to control my car. I noticed this yesterday while changing my oil in preparation for taking my wife and 2 young daughters on a 1400 mile round trip vacation from cincinnati to minneapolis. The chances of my entire family getting killed in a car wreck on this trip would have been extremely high. I checked some internet forums and found several people complaining about this same thing. Of course, hyundai claims no responsibility for this. I have 78k miles on my car.

Left front lower control arm rusted through and while turning into gas station experienced severe grinding noise and collapse of wheel.upon investigation found vehicle undrivable and had flat bedded to garage.my mechanic replaced both lower control arms that had rusted completely through using hyundai replacement parts.contacted hyundai directly and complained and have case number and hope for reimbursement of monies spent.

The steering wheel and front wheels shake above 65 mph which can also be felt throughout the front of the car. I feel the excessive shake could lead to a loss of control of the vehicle.

2002 hyundai elantra-great car no major problems. Memorial day coming home on a secondary road approaching a stop sign-bang! couldn't move the car.a driver going by tells me don't move-the wheel is off the car! had to be towed from scene-the lower control bar had completely rusted through and let go. The metal used on this particular part is so thin it is scary! you would expect the metal used for this part would be rather thick due to the serious purpose it serves and the constant stress it must endure.at seven years old it should not be rusted away to the point of breaking in two.the only symptoms i experienced was a high pitched sound which occurred every once in a while-sounded like chain jingling, and a somewhat smoother ride like my tires were low on air. I have numerous people look at this -they walk away in disbelief when i tell them the car is seven years old, considering the ruston this control arm it is unbelievable-i am now wondering if thereare others out there having the same experience. I am a school bus driver -having driven school busses for over twenty years but this experience has enlightened me to the importance of the circle check on our vehicles!!!!

I stopped at a red light and something under my car snapped and the car swerved to the right. I had the car towed to a mechanic who determined the lower right control arm had rusted through and broke.

The contact owns a 2002 hyundai elantra. While driving approximately 70 mph the front control arms failed and the driver lost control of the vehicle which resulted in a fatal crash. The police and fire department arrived on the scene. The vehicle was destroyed and towed to a collision center. The vin is a part of recall nhtsa id number 09v12500 (suspension front: control arm). An appointment was previously scheduled before the crash occurred. The current and failure mileages were 118,000.

Left (driver's side) front control arm failure on 4/16/09.vehicle was purchased new in june of 2002.currently has approximately 93,000 miles.all routine maintenance has been performed on vehicle (i.e., oil changes, 30k service, 60k service, 90k service).control arm failed while traveling on interstate highway at a speed of approximately 30 miles per hour.

The contact owns a 2002 hyundai elantra. The contact stated that the right control arm broke while the contact was driving.the dealer and manufacturer made the contact aware of nhtsa campaign id number: 09v125000 (suspension front control arm), but the vin was not a part of the recall. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileage was 134,000.

While performing routine maintenance on our 2002 hyundai elantra gt, i discovered a rust hole in the drivers side lower control arm. The hole is approximately 1.5 inches in diameter located about 4 inches inward of ball joint on the upper portion of the control arm. The area surrounding the hole appeared to be very thin and brittle. The vehicle had 138000 miles at the time the issue was noticed. We have concerns about the safety of the vehicle and the structural integrity of the control arm. It seems that this is too early in the cars life to have a major structural component begin to deteriorate due to rust. Of the other cars we have owned, none have displayed similar rust to this, even after 10+ years of usage.

Going approximately 20 mph approaching stop sign.car came to complete stop.could not exit drivers side door.exited passenger side to find front left tire turned out at 90 degree angle.front lower control arm rusted through and broken.

After braking, my elantra jerk, made and awful grinding sound, and was extremely difficult to steer. Upon visual inspection, i could see that a part had broken off. I had it towed to a local mechanic who said that the right front control arm was "rotted through"and that this is often seen in hyundais.the left side also shows signs of deterioration.the mechanic recommended replacing both sides, as the left side might only last a few months given the degree of deterioration.parts are being replaced.

Lower left control arm rusted through and was very weak and had to be replaced on my wife's hyundai 2002 elantra gls.

On my way to work one morning, i applied the brakes for stopped traffic. I heard something crack, and the car swerved to the right. After backing, and checking under the car to see if i hit something, which i didn't i proceeded, and it seemed normal until i hit the brakes again to have the same thing happen. I called a tow truck, when he arrived he looked under and told me that my lower right control arm had broken. I had it towed in at a cost of $61.00. The repair shop called and told me i was lucky i hadn't been on the turnpike, as i could have had a serious accident. The lower control arm had completely rusted through, and they hadn't seen this before. The repair cost $324.85. I called hyundai, and they issued me a case#3271798. After faxing them the bills, i waited about a week, when they called me back, they denied the claim, saying (a) the car was some 30,000 miles and a year and a half out of warranty, and (b) that this was normal wear and tear. Imagine how i felt with that statement when my wife and son also are driving hyundai's. Until this happened i would have bought 10 more of them, they have been great cars, but i have searched other complaints , and i t seems to be a problem that hyundai has not addressed. When mine was repaired, they looked for a used part, and were told this they were all in the same shape, and when buying the part from the dealer they had several on the shelf, indicating a problem. I would have been satisfied if they had reimbursed me, but they chose to ignore the problem. Was this the only year it affects?or are there other potentialaccidents out there waiting to happen?

The front passenger side control arm of my 2002 hyundai elantra broke. The wheel could have flown off, but luckily it didn't. This happened on a 2 lane road. If it had happened on a highway, it could have been catastrophic. The car was towed to my mechanic and is still there. I did research online and found information about a recall dated april 2009. I called hyundai consumer affairs hotline and was told the recall is not officially released and dealerships won't acknowledge it. I was also told my car won't qualify for the recall because the mileage is too high.

On november 27th, 2009 i was coming to a stop at the bottom of an interstate off-ramp, when i heard a loud noise in the front of my 2002 hyundai elantra gt. I tried to move forward and it felt like i had a flat tire, but when i got out of the car the left front wheel was turned inward. I was able to get the vehicle to the side of the road and inspect the under carriage, the left front control arm had rusted to the point that it had crumpled when i tried to stop.the vehicle was towed to a hyundai dealership and was repaired by replacing both front control arms (the right arm was also rusted). The reason i'm sending this message is because my state (kentucky) is not involved in the hyundai recall (id #58993) that was investigated by the nhtsa, action number pe09011.

The contact owns a 2002 hyundai elantra.while driving approximately 10 mph, the front driver's side of the vehicle collapsed without warning.the vehicle was towed to the dealer and they stated that the front driver's side control arm fractured.the dealer made the replacement, including the tie rods at the cost of $700.the manufacturer did not assist.the failure and current mileages were 64,000.

2002 hyundai elantra front right lower control arm snapped while driving. Dealer told us it was not covered under 10yr/100,000 warranty and that there is no recall. Called hyundai directly and told the same thing. Also left side lower control arm is rusted through and needs to be replaced also.

2002 elantra gt made r turn from full stop onto chester pike.heard grinding from passenger front wheel.car came to complete stop.front wheel fell off. Fractured suspension arm was seen.axle failure was found when care was inspected. Recall was issued 7/10/09.i am the original owner and have not received a recall notice.i do receive weekly ads from hyundai suggesting trade in, so they know where i am. I now need to jump through hoops to get hyundai to pay, as i did not find out about the recall until my car was towed to and repaired by an independent garage. Police were on scene with lights flashing to protect disabled vehicle until tow truck arrived.no report was filled as there was no accident or injury.

I was driving at around 40 mph when the vehicle in front of me stopped short to let a police car cross our lane. I had to slam on the brakes to avoid hitting this car. I pulled over to the side of the road because i heard a strange sound, as though i had a flat tire. After being towed to my mechanic, i was told that the passenger side control arm had snapped because it was completely rusted out. I have about 40,000 miles on the car.i was also told that i was very lucky this didn't happen on the highway at high speed.

Air bag light is on when car is on and started. Also when turning left or right my car is making cranking noises up in the front of the car. *dt

The right lower control arm bent in half while stopping my 2002 hyundai elantra gt, and the left lower control arm on my wife's 2002 hyundai elantra gls began to sag. Both had to be replaced in the last 90 days.

The contact owns a 2002 hyundai elantra.the contact stated that the control arm was rusty in the front end of the vehicle.while driving approximately 5 mph over a speed bump, it felt as if the passenger side collapsed.he exited the vehicle and did not see any visible signs of damage.after the incident, the contact noticed steering, grinding, and rubbing issues with the vehicle.he took the vehicle to a repair shop and they identified the rusted control arm.the vehicle was towed to the dealer, but the contact has not yet received a response.the manufacturer was not notified and the vehicle has not been repaired.the current and failure mileages were approximately 75,000.

2002 hyundai elantra left control arm broken.

Car was riding normal as always, then made left turn and left front wheel was pushed into the rear of the wheel well. Slid off road, resulting in minor cosmetic damage. Cause of failure was a snapped left front control arm due to rust . Part was personally replaced at great expense. Broken part is available.

To whom this concerns, regarding nhtsa "campaign id number" 09v125000.while driving my 2002 elantra the front left wheel moved (slipped/snapped) out of place to the point that it was rubbing against the back of the wheel well when trying to stop in traffic.the car did not stop as it normally would (it felt like there was no stopping power).my vehicle hit another vehicle from behind which caused significant damage to the front end of my car. I took the vehicle to moon twp auto body to get an estimate for the damage.part of the estimate was to replace thelower control arm and the adjuster wrote on the drivers side window that anyone handling the car should take caution as the control arm is "ripped" out.for consideration i pose this question "why would the body shop estimate replacing the control arm if it wasn't broken?"i've just received an invoice from the hyundai dealership (falconi's 412-269-1234) itemizing that they replaced both control arms per their campaign number 091, but that the control arm was not broken.additionally, i received pictures taken by the dealership showing significant rotting on both sides of control arm.i contend that the accident would not have occurred if the control arm had not slipped out of place.i've been in contact with hyundai corporation at 800-633-5151 and asked them to complete all repairs for the damage directly related to the accident.they continue to claim that the control arm was not rotted and displaced and will not fix the damage.my case number with hyundai is #3711968.at the time of the accident i was unaware of the recall as the previous/original owner (my father) nor myself had received a recall letter.note:a recall letter has still not been received by either of us.i moved forward as if i had no claims against anyone or any company.i have more info/photos if required.

A control arm failed causing the vehicle to swerve wildly into oncoming traffic and then back across the original lane.collisions with other vehicles and a wheelchair-bound pedestrian were barely avoided. This was supposed to have been corrected through a recall when the car was returned to the dealer for issues of rotting control arms.the recall "repairs" were supposed to have been done on march 12, 2011, at which time the mileage was 60,380.

The contact owns a 2002 hyundai elantra. While driving 30 mph the control arm fractured in half, and then knocked the stabilizer links out.the vehicle was taken to a local mechanic, and he was informed of the control arm failure. She contacted the dealer in reference to recall #09v125000 (suspension:front:control arm). A technician stated that she would have to make a commitment to pay $1000 in order for him to repair the vehicle according to recall. He then added thatin order to perform the remedy referenced in the recall, he would have to take the muffler down. She then contacted themanufacturer, and a representative told her that the dealer was going to create another estimate for the repair. The current and failure mileages were approximately 180,000.

The contact owns a 2002 hyundai elantra. The contact was traveling 65 mph when she heard what sounded like a tire blowout. The contact was able to maneuver the vehicle to the shoulder and noticed that the front driver's wheel was turned outward.

I own a 2002 hyundai elantra. While driving in a neighborhood my daughter hit her brakes to avoid a dog. Upon braking the left lower control arm of the vehicles suspension broke and as a result the left front tire was thrown into the back of the wheel well. If this had happened on the highway my daughter would have most certainly died. Upon notifying hyundai i was told with 92,000 miles the car was out of warranty and they would do nothing to fix it. I then tried to present them with the failed part and was told that the hyundai representative would be at the dealership during the week of jan. 1 and i would receive a call. To this date (feb. 8)i have heard nothing. My calls to the dealership have gone unreturned. I am concerned that someone else driving a 4 year old vehicle may be killed by an unexpected rust through of a 4 year old part.

Backlick road in springfield va. I gently pressed on the brakes because of slowing traffic, my car immediately slid to the left and with out warning came to a sudden halt. Called 911 for police assistance in directing traffic and also aaa for towing. The car was towed to a service garage and was informed that the right control arm of my hyundai elantra 2002 was completely rusted through and broke off jamming itself into the wheel of my car causing it to not move at all.ironically, my car was just serviced by my dealership 6 days prior to this happening for an oil change, tires rotated and alignment. They never mentioned a rusty control arm.hyundai was going to charge $400 to have the control arm repaired. Then i asked them for pictures of the control arm and was told that they could not do that because the camera belonged to hyundai and they did know how to get pictures to me. I told them that i would like to come in and take pictures of the control arm myself. With in minutes - they told me not to worry about it because they are going to have it covered under warranty!they did cover it under good will warranty and the part was replaced. Never did the dealership acknowledge the severity this could have turned into had i been traveling on an interstate at that time. I picked up my car on monday 2/18. They brought out the rusted control arm from my car but they also brought out another one that was replaced on saturday, just as rusted through as mine had been.i took pictures of the one from my car.they would not let me keep the part because they said it had to be sent back to the manufacturer. When i called to report this problem to hyundai of america (via 800 #) they said they were closing my case because the dealership had resolved the problem and that i should be grateful for the goodwill service.i'm expecting a call from a supervisor w/in the next 24 hours.

The lower control arm on my 2002 hyundai elantra broke during driving due to corrosion. Thank god i was coming to a stop and driving slowly.the vehicle was towed to the dealership where i was told there was no recall and that they would not cover the repair. After some heated discussion i was told the would warranty the control arm. When i asked if they would replace the other defective control arm that did not break i was told only the failed part would be replaced. I indicated that the car was not safe an i would not drive without the other control arm being replaced. They have not indicated if they will warranty the other.i believe hyundai is trying to keep a major problem hidden from the public.

The steering wheel and front wheels shake above 65 mph which can also be felt throughout the front of the car. I feel the excessive shake could lead to a loss of control of the vehicle.

The whole frame is rusty.

2002 elantra surged forward when brakes were applied.the dealer attributed the violent acceleration as possibly being due to the thick rubber floor mat which may have been wedge under the accelerator, however the consumer disagreed with that theory stating when he started the vehicle, the floor mat was at least 6-9 inches away from the accelerator. The consumer, his wife and the mechanic all experienced the sudden acceleration.

In july 2008, the control arm of my 2002 hyundai elantra broke off while i was driving approx. 10 mph and approaching a stop light.i lost control of the car and skidded off the rode, but did not hit any other car or barrier.i had the car fixed at the closest auto shop.i received a recall notice yesterday from hyundai related to corrosion of the control arm.knowing that if i had been traveling any faster or on a busier road when my control arm broke that there would have been serious issues, i tried to schedule the soonest appointment to get the other control arm checked and verify the work.the soonest available appt. The shop gave me was mid-june.this resolution leaves me and my family at risk until that date and i believe that that is entirely unacceptable.

2002 hyundai elantra with mats that curl under the accelerator customer states that his car suddenly accelerated out of control causing a accident**ccthe consumer provided an article that details the same problem he was having with his vehicle.

While driving automatic transmission stuck between gears, andvehicle lurched forward, causingdriver to lose control.vehicle ran off the road due to this problem.

2002 hyundai elantra. Consumer describes unexpected acceleration issues *grthe consumer stated she experienced sudden acceleration on three separate occasions which resulted in accidents.

Dt: consumer's mother drove this vehicle. On 5 separateoccasions, the vehicle accelerated on its own.one incident was in a store parking lot, the consumer had the vehicle in reverse and it revved up like a jet engine, and did 2 1/2 circles.the vehicle was turned off to stop it.

When the brakes were applied, the vehicle experienced extended stopping distance. On several occasions, while parked the engine revved up, which caused the consumer to hit another vehicle.

After about 4,000 miles the engine developed a flat spot in the engine right at about 4000 rpm.it is annoying and potentially dangerous when trying to pass on the freeway. I have to reset the ecm about every 1500-2000 miles. After i resetthe ecm. The flat spot,or lag, is gone for about 1500-2000 miles. I have had to reset it about 5 times so far. Two different dealers have beem able to locate ,or correct the problem.

While coming to a stop the rpms temporally raced at a high rate. Consumer continued to drive. Dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem.*tc

When i started my car the engine was revving super high. This is the third time.its happened since april 2004 purchase date.i almost hit a parked car the first time it occured. The car lurched forward when i shifted out of "park"

The accelerator pedal became stuck, which caused the vehicle to accelerate faster.

Consumer is hearing a whistling noise while driving the vehicle. Vehicle would not accelerate ,and had to be towed. Vehicle has been in several times for the same problem.

Brake/gas pedals are too close, causing driver to pushgas/brake at the same time.*mj

Dt:2002 hyundai elantra.the cruise control cable stuck at full throttle.the vehicle was towed to the dealership.the cruise control cable had to be ordered.when the consumer started the vehicle the throttle went all the way to the floor, the only way to stop it was to turn the vehicle off.looking under the hood, there was no visible problem.the accelerator was not stuck either.

While at a complete stop, the vehiclelurched forward.the dealer replaced the throttle piston twice, but the problem continued.*sc

When at a stand still and foot on the brake the vehicle automatically surged forward. Ts

Consumer can't get windows open if power is off.vehicle has all power with no manual crank.if there is an accident and the doors are pinned shut, there's no way to get out.vehicle should have manual crank on both doors for emergency escape.*jg

Sun roof leaks, advisor say built that way.

I arrived home around 4:00pm, saturday jan 31, 2015 and parked my car in the parking lot outside my condo building. I unloaded my car trunk, then closed the trunk and heard a rattling noise. I was not sure what it was at first but i knew it came from the car. I walked around the vehicle and opened the driver door to look inside. I did not see anything unusual, but when i closed the driver door i heard the rattle again on top of my car, when i looked at the roof i noticed the sunroof glass was warped upward and a hole was in the middle of the glass. When i looked closer at the sunroof the glass was shattered with a hole about 3-4 inched wide and the edges of the glass were pointing upward. It looked like the sunroof exploded from within. The rest of the sunroof was cracked and splintered being held together simply by the safety glass or i think it would have all fallen in ward.

Here is a loudhowling noise coming from the front of the vehicle. The dealership indicated that it was cause by the mold on the windshield. Dealership replaced mold, but howling noise still exist. Ts

Any time it is very cold, the washer solvent freezes in the lines and you cannot squirt to clean the windows.this has been a problem on several occassions, but i guessed at 5.

Windshield wipers froze up while driving in storm.the car had to be pulled off the road.the linkage had to be replaced.this was the second time the linkage has frozen up.in between the two linkage failures the wiper motor also had to be replaced.all parts were hyundai oem.

Lug nuts frozen and bolts have to be broken to take the tire off. This is the fifth time this has happened when i take the car in for service.my other car is a ford and i take it to the same place and have no problems.i owned other cars and never had the problem i have with this car.

The contact owns a 2002 hyundai elantra.the contact stated that the vehicle vibrated because the rimswere bent.the rims were replaced, but the vehicle continued to vibrate because the rims did not fit the hub.currently, the vehicle continued to vibrate.the contact was concerned about spending money on the vehicle ,only for it not to be properly repaired.the current mileagewas 55,100 and failure mileage was 53,767.
