I have a 99 hyundai elantra 4 door. Last week the steering column caught on fire while it was being driven. More specifically, i was at the time in the hardee's drive thru when the smoke and flames started.i was able to get my car to roll out of the drive thru and into the parking lot. I have spoken to a few mechanics who say that it seems like it was a short in the electrical system in the steering wheel. It melted all of the steering column, dash, cracked the windshield with the heat, and other fire damage. The car is now totaled and undriveable.i am a single mother of 2 kids and this was my only means of transportation. Also about a year ago, i was in a head on collision that was not my fault, and the airbags did not deploy in the steering wheel. I had contacted hyundai afterwards, but they said that the car was fine and not to worry. I have no way to scan my documents, but i have a police report as well as several emails from hyundai from last year, as well as pictures of the damage.

Consumer felt as though airbags weretoo forceful, consumer was unable to see out of right eye bucause of airbag deployment.

While driving about 35 mphrear ended another vehicle in front, and air bags did notdeploy.vehicle was totaled.

I was involved in a front end collision (i hit the back bumper of a pickup truck).although no damage occurred to the truck, my car ended up with almost $5,000 worth of damage.neither my air bags nor shoulder restraints worked.i ended up hitting my forehead on the front windshield causing some moderate to severe neck trauma.i reported the failure to hyundai and seem to be getting no help.they insist that there is no problem.i still can sit in my car and move my chest forward against the shoulder restraints as fast as i can and never have the even slow me down.however, if i use my hand to move the straps forward, they lock up immediately as they should.i spoke again to hyundai(1-800-633-5151 file #[xxx]) and they insist that it is normal to move forward like my restraints do.all i know is that my shoulder restraints do notand did not move forward in any other car i have driven in.something is wrong here.i would appreciate any help you can offer as i am very nervous about driving a vehicle that has proven to me to be unsafe.i look forward to any help you can offer.sincerely, [xxx]. My 1999 hyundai elantra gl sedan has been experiencing intermittent (but with increasing frequency) low/"idle" speed engine stalling. This presents a dangerous situation when the car stalls at a stoplight or when slowing to turn in a residential neighborhood. Most stalls are occurring at less than 25mph. I have also experienced intermittent "check engine light" episodes during these occurrences. I have taken the car to my mechanic for diagnosis/repair...the computer history show maf sensor but no failure. Additionally, the 'check engine light" does not remain "on".i took the car to the local hyundai dealership after reading recall/service bulletins related to the maf sensor wiring. They also performed the computer diagnostic that indicated maf sensor issues in the computer history. They also informed me that my vehicle is not one of the hyundai elantra/sonata vin codes. I would appreciate some information from you regarding the resolution to this problem. The hyundai recall/campaign id is 039 and the nhtsa/odf campaign is 00v259001.

At 23,000 miles a/c burned out, replaced auto transmission, spark plug wiring and many leaks. Front end vibrating, tires and brake lining failed.the consumer stated that the brake shoes for the front and back do not match.*tc

The contact owns a 1999 hyundai elantra. The contact stated that the vehicle jerked, lunged, and lost power. The failure occurred without warning. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where the technician diagnosed the issue as an electrical failure. The vehicle was repaired; however, the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken back to the mechanic who diagnosed that the maf sensor connector needed to be re-routed. The contact referenced nhtsa campaign number: 00v259001 (electrical system), but the vin was not included. The manufacturer was not notified. The failure mileage was approximately 91,000.

Compaign id 00v259001 is for low speed stalling on 1999 hyundai elantra models with certain vin numbers and relates to the wiring with the mass air flow censor. I have a 1999 hyundai elantra that is having the exact same problem but does not fit within the vin range so they are not covering it. I feel this campaign should be expanded further to cover all of these models with the same problem.

The contact owns a 1999 hyundai elantra. While driving 30 mph, the contact stated that the vehicle stalled. The failure mileage was approximately 100,000.

My vehicle has been stalling for more than a year. The mass airflow sensor read as bad and i have replaced it twice. I just found out that there was a recall sep 11, 2000.nhtsa campaign id number: 00v259001 .i purchased the vehicle used several years after the recall was in effect.when i e-mailed hyundai, they responded back that there no open campaigns on my vehicle.how do i get the problem resolved before there is a serious accident from the vehicle stalling.

Causeunknown, the consumer checked the nhtsa website and found the hyundai appeared to have a recall for this problem, the dealer advised that this was not a recall and that hyundai does not have to honor the warranty.*nlm *dt

Consumer took the vehicle to the dealer to have recall repair 00v-259 performed on 11/22/00 which was supposed take a half day to complete, the mechanic resigned that day and the vehicle was not aurhorized to be picked up until dec. 6, the consumer picked up the vehicle because she felt she was getting the run around, vehicle still has not been repaired and continues to stall.nlm

(1) on december 20,2004, the first cold day of the year, my 1999 elantra would not start.(2) the next day, december 21, 2004, the car started, but as i would come to a stop at a traffic light, the engine would begin to shake violently and the car would stall out.this also occurred while traveling at speeds under 20 mph.(3) i drove directly to my hyundai dealership which assessed the car and told me the mass airflow sensor had gone bad and needed to be replaced, which was not covered under my warranty.the part was replaced that afternoon at 275.00 plus labor= 391.00.this evening, december 23,2004 after searching the nhtsa website, i realized that the 1999 hyundai elantra had been recalled on sept 7, 2000 (nhtsa campaign # 00v259001/hyundai recall # 040.)i immediately contacted hyundai consumer complaint division and was told my a representative that my vehicle vin # was not one of those included in the recall campaign because it had been manufactured on may 24, 1999 and the campaign only included 1999 elantras manufactured between june 1, 1999-june 6, 2000.i find it extremely hard to believe that a 7 day period between the date my car was manufactured and the date the recall began should be the reason why this costly repair would not be covered.i am looking to have this complaint investigated, and be reimbursed for the cost of parts/labor for this defect, which hyundai will not allow.

I have read many of the complaints about the hyundai. I've eliminated practically all the same complaints about the engine performance by tuning the engine every 30 to 35 thousand miles. The gas mileage and performance has been very acceptable. Yes i too have had to replace the manifold, mas air sensor, and other small maintenance parts. The only thing i haven't been able to repair is when i'm setting at a stop and idling, the engine tends to overheat. But when i began to drive it quickly cools back down. My hyundai now has approximately 230,000 miles and is still in service but still overheats. Any suggestions?

I was having problems with my car wanting to stall at take offs.when i took it in for servicing i was told i would needthe mass air flow sensor fixed.i found that this was a recall issue campaign # 00v259 for all 1999 elantras.my car however does not qualify for the quick fix unless i want to pay for it. This is already an issue with the 1999's apparently hyundai needs to go back farther then the manufacture date of july 1998. Why mine does not fall under the "all 1999 elantra" catagory is beyond me.

I took my 1999 hyundai elantra in to obrien auto park in fort myers service center to get looked at and fixed. I had trouble codes that i had checked prior going there at autozone that were codes po747, po743, po442. The first to are codes involving my automatic transmission. I viewed on your website that there were recalls on the pressure control solenoid that involved code po747 which states it was in the stuck on position! i told the service manager all of this there and he told me there were no recalls on the solenoid and that he couldn't do anything for me! i had 2 other codes that were,po732, and po734 pertaining to the 2nd and 4th gear ratio being incorrect! i explained that at first there was a electrical issue which change the codes to the state it's in now and he told me we'll look at it and call you when we find out anything. I said ok, he called a few hours later and told me the service tech said i needed a new transmission. I said no, i am not an idiot! there was an electrical problem and this is why i brought it in. He stated to me that, he could not go by the codes i had from autozone because they were generic codes and hyundai wouldn't except them. My only option was to have the transmission replaced. This guy is lying and i know it! even the guy at autozone told me it was a electrical malfunction caused by the solenoid!!! please help. Now i am out of work 2 days now and even may loose my job over this! nothing was done to correct this problem and i would never buy a hyundai again!!!!!!!!

I purchase my car a 1999 hyundai elantra, sept 0f 1999, since the purchase of this car i've had a problem with the car not accelerating when pressing on the accelerator and the car decelerating while driving, i've contacted hyundai numerous times over the past 4 years and have not been able to get hyundai to fix this problem even though i've told them about the recall nhtsa campaign number 99v178000, they refuse to acknowledge that my car should have been part of this recall, even after telling hyundai my car is experiencing all the problems mention in this recall, i informed hynudai that this problem is putting my families life at risk, and this problem is now accurring every time i drive. I done all the things hyundai recommended which was having a diagnostic, which so far i've had 2 done, and gettting a complete tune-up, the problem is still there .after the first diagnotic i was told that the computer reset itself, so that now no problem shows, and they claim they cannot go in and check without the diagnostic showing a problem, i think this is a despective practice since the computer resetting now hides any pre-extisting problems. This situation is causing me a considerable amount of stress and fear for my family safety and i feel i am now stuck with a car that is now undrivable and that hyundai is putting my families life at risk.

I bought the car brand new. After about 8 months the car would get stuck in second gear when slow down. The car also kicks very hard while it does this. One time i was rounding a turn after it rained and as i slowed down around the corner the car kicked and the rear end of the car slid out into the plastic divider poles between the lanes. The poles caused a ding in the car an cracked a window. At the time it happened so fast i thought i had hit something and only a week later when the car kicked again did i realize that was probably what happened.i brought the car down to the dealer and was told i would be given a new pulse generator under warranty.then there was a recall on a part in the transmission and that was fixed. The problem still persisted and i have had the pulse generator changed four more times. My warranty is now up and the problem has come back.i have even installed a brand knew transmission.

The automatic transmission slips and jumps out of gear, causing the engine to climb in rpm. At other times the transmission the trans waits to grab then jerks the car forward. As of this time the car has been in for the same problem at 12000, 39000, 42000 and it is going back in. The last time this happened the car was in the shop on 8/24/2000, after picking the car up from repairs the same problem returned on the way home and the car is going back in on 8/28/2000.
