The check engine light illuminated continuously.the vehicle was inspected by the dealer but they could not duplicate or correct the problem.*nlm
Engine lifters tap loudly for anywhere for 2 mins or 20 miles depending on how long the car set. The lifters had been replaced once. Taken to dealer to have it checked out they says its fine but a friend of mine that also works there says they are boarder line and will need to be taken care of soon. Dealer will not replace.
About: 2002 hyundai accentproblem happens short time after filling the gas tank.check engine light comes on and car has a sudden large loss of power, overdrive cuts out. She just barley escaped.this has happened a total of 5 times in 14,000 miles of driving. 2002 hyundai accent 2 dr sedanthere is a dangerous problem where gas being pumped into the car is being rejected by the fuel system and spitting back out of the fuel pipe without triggering the gasoline pump shut off.the fuel has on many occasions spit back on the person filling the car with gasoline.per the hyundai dealer and consumer affairs this is a common problem yet no recall has been issued or requested.the problem is a charcoal fuel filter canister that contains a bag of charcoal that has burst whereby the charcoal pieces are blocking a valve that regulates the flow of fuel into the gas tank.the cost of the repair at the dealer is $720 plus tax. Gas will eventually be able to be put into the tank very slow if the person pumping the gas is aware of the problem, if not the gasoline sprays everywhere which is where the danger occurs. One spark and the person and vehicle will explode or burst into flames. To answer your question below, was there a death or injury, was there a fire, was there property damage.all of this have a great possibility of incurring if they have not already been incurred by others.thank you for your assistance.i spoke to hyundai consumer affairs and they were not willing to pay for or assist in paying for the repairs in any manner.
This is a very well known problems for the hyundai accent. You can check some web pages describing this problem: http://autoforum.classifieds1000.com/hyundai-accent/gas_tank_shut_offhttp://en.allexperts.com/q/hyundai-repair-815/2002-hyundai-accent-charcoal.htmas soon as i start to pump gas, sometimes it only pumps gas for a few seconds and then the handle shuts off as if the gas tank were already full. I sometimes have some success pumping gas into the tank by holding the handle to pump rather than using the pin to keep the gas pumping, hold the handle at a higher angle and kind of push the nozzle into the gas tank opening with more pressure, but even with these maneuvers it sometimes shuts off after a short time and i have to keep restarting the gas over and over again. Sometimes it shuts off every few seconds, sometimes a little longer but it is very annoying. I asked my dealer and they said it would cost about $200 just to check it out and then extra to repair the problem.
When putting gas in my 2002 hyundai accent, thegas pump keeps shutting off and/or gas leaks out of gas tanks while filling.
The problem i am having is with the vehicles perg flow system. The vehicle has a charcoal canister that filters gas vapors from the gas tank. This canister has become clogged so on fill up the fumes can not vent properly and forces air back up the filler neck of the gas tank and sprays gas all over. This is not only dangerous to myself but also dangerous to every person in the area. I feel this is a danger to everyone and needs to b addressed
For the past 2 years i have had to replace speed sensors and oxygen sensors, several times. I was taking to my mechanic because parts were out of warranty, but my mechanic stated that it is a transmission problem because every time i had chips replaced my trans fluid was dirty and had to flush again and again. Took car to dealer, same conclusion. Hyundai refused to replace. Filed a complaint with hyundai. Hyundai stated they were not contacted by dealer, this statement was later retracted by them. They are still refusing to replace my transmission. Did all scheduled maintenance. My car has about 77000 miles and is almost 10 years. My fuel system began acting up early 2011. Can only fill tank 1/4 gallon every 1min. This takes me a very long time to fil1 tank. Dealer gave me a $1600 repair estimate. I am reading literally 1000's of complaints on both issues and hyundai refuses to speak on them. These are dangerous issues: sensor chips causes cars to stall, particularly at high speeds, imagine being behind someone going 60mph and then suddenly their car stalls....crash waiting to happen and the fueling issue can increase the likelihood of car fires. If the gas is leaking or spilling out due to poor workmanship and/or design and an accident occurs ignition of gas spilling outside increases, not to mention environmental hazards. These cars could not pass emissions testing.the main issue is that hyundai is missing in action and refuses to honor their warranties. Shame shame hyundai. Saying you offer a 10 year warranty and actually honoring it are 2 different things.
Consumer stated when she opened the door to her new vehicle, an odor/chemical odor blasted at her, when she asked the salesman about the odor he infomred her that was just a new car smell, however the odor never went away even with the vehicle being aired out daily, the dealer never resolved the problem, consumer requested to turn vehicle back in, but was informed that if the vehicle was turned in on a trade consumer would get $2000 less that what she paid for it, possible fuel system problem, consumer states that the smell made her dizzy and nauseated.
Can't fill gas tank, pump and nozzle keeps clicking off even at a trickle of gas and tank near empty. This is a very common problem with hyundai and it should be recalled or fixed for free not $700-800 at the dealer!!!

The contact owns a 2002 hyundia accent. When the contactadds fuel to her vehicle it comes back out and spills onto the ground. In order to avoid the fuel spilling out of her vehicle it needs to be added in short intervals. The mechanic and a technician were unable to diagnose the defect. The failure mileage was 115,000.
A few months ago a problem started with my pumping gas. Gas tank/car will not accept more than a few cents worth of gas before clicking off as if full. Tank is confirmed as not full when this happens. This is a constant occurrence ie every time gas is attempted to be pumped. It seems the problem is the charcoal canister. This is scary because in addition to the "click-off" it often overflows spilling/spraying gas all over me, my car and the ground.i am stressed and fear walking around with flammable liquid dried into my clothing!what if the gas got into my eyes!i wish someone could help with getting hyundai to do a recall as this is making me nervous to the point where i will not pump gas while my children are in the car which is extremely inconvenient and is something i should not have to worry and constantly stress about.please help because coming in contact with flammable gasoline is just terrifying and not something i want to continue doing!
My 2002 hyundai accent "clicks off" repeatedly when attempting to refuel the vehicle. Gasoline pools in the chamber between the fuel door and the gas tank causing a serious hazard. Fuel smells are frequently observed within the car after fueling and for a period of days afterward. The "check engine" remains illuminated indicating a fuel line system. I have had the system checked by a full service automotive facility and they have replaced several parts with no success in remedying the problem. Have suggested possibly replacing the entire full line, gas tank, etc but have indicated this is likely a manufacturer defect that should be addressed as such.at the current time it is impossible to put more than a few ounces of gasoline into the car at any one time and failure to closely monitor the chamber while attempting to refuel can lead to gasoline overflow and spills. I have significant concerns as to the safety of fueling this car on a weekly basis as well as the risk of fire hazard should any type of rear-end collision occur with this vehicle. From my research this appears to be a fairly common occurrence with this model/year of hyundai, including at low mileage points. Concerned that hyundai has not addressed what appears to be a serious issue for safety.
The contact owns a 2002 hyundai accent. The contact stated that while attempting to fill the vehicle with fuel, she noticed that the vehicle exhibited an issue with the fuel being pumped in the fuel tank. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealership where the contact was informed that the charcoal canister located in the fuel tank needed to be replaced. The contact called the manufacturer but was offered no assistance because the vehicle was outside the warranty. The current and failure mileages were approximately 55,000. Updated 10/27/10. *lj
For at least a year now, my gas tank shut off valve seems to be defective. The tip on the fuel handle goes in but the handle shuts off after only a few seconds after starting to fill the tank.the switch off sensor inside the fuel intake valve area seems to indicate the tank is full when it is not.the trigger on the handle has to be manually squeezed and even then the problem occurs.on many occasions the gas has overfilled, spit out and spilled out and onto ground, the car, the handle and my hand as the sensor does not indicate the tank is full. This is dangerous.the hyundai dealer service rep said to bring the car in to check and it would cost around $100. If this is a common problem, the dealer should cover this check and correct this dangerous problem.
My hyundai accent 02 refuses to fuel up continually shutting off at the pump 1/4 gal at best, twenty minutes to fill, took it to the dealership they are well aware of the problem,,, without even looking at it they told me 850.00 to fix it. I talked with hyundai and the dealer didn't document the occurrence he and i talked about, soooo i don't have a leg to stand on.. Please help. This vehicle was purchased new by me in 03, problem first occurred in 07.
2002 hyundai accent with 90,000 miles will not accept more than a trickle of gasoline without backing up and shutting off the gas pump.this occurs due to the charcoal in the vapor canister expanding and blocking off the venting from the gas tank.not only is the back up of fuel dangerous, but it appears to be a pollution control system problem as well.
The vehicle accelerates on its own and stalling on highways.cause unknown.tune up and all other attempts to resolve with no improvement in condition.
On may 24, 2006 my husband went to start the car and it wouldn't start.he kept trying to start it and then a smell of gasoline overwhelmed him.he immediately left the car and called a tow truck to take it to the dealer (earnhart hyundai in gilbert arizona).my husband was told later in the day by sam at earnhart that the fuel filter clamp had been "busted" and that gas had inadvertently leaked all over the inside of the car.he (sam) proceeded to tell my husband that "someone" had tampered with the fuel filter and they had no way of proving it was a manufacturer defect.apparently, in this make of hyundai accent, the fuel lines run inside the cab of the car, you need to actually take the driver seat off to work on the fuel filter.we have never had the fuel filter worked on, so this was a surprise to us.my next question is why would hyundai have fuel lines running inside the cab of the car????this is the most bizarre thing i have ever heard of. If he had been a smoker and lit up like most smokers do, he would have been engulfed in flames.we asked for a replacement of the carpet, drivers seat and anything else that was saturated and we were told no.this is a safety hazard for anyone who has a hyundai.
The contact owns 2002 hyundai accent. The contact stated that while refueling the fuel gauge indicated that the fuel tank was full. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who diagnose that the fuel pump and the fuel tank needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure who did not offer any assistance although the vehicle was under warranty. The failure mileage was 69,012 and the current mileage was 69,100.updated 11/01/12the consumer stated that the pump would stop fueling after 0.5 gallons of gas. The canister was replaced. The failure continued. The check engine light illuminated.the dealer then suggested to change the dmtc pump. If the rubber pipe connected to the canister is removed the vehicle can then be fueled as normal. Updated 11/02/2012

Having trouble putting gas in the car, nozzle keeps shutting off about every couple of seconds. Happens every time i get gas. Tried different stations some attendants will try different ways to put the nozzle in or turn it but it still does it .first started at the end of may2010. Car is a 2002 accent with only 52,000 miles on it. Took to dealer saidthe charcoal canister, dmtl motor,& a valve assy-fuel v need to be replaced. Had to prepay for parts to be ordered. Picked car up until parts come in.
Many people have been complaining about this vehicle. You can't put gas into it without the pump stopping approximately every .25 gallons. It's very annoying and it is difficult to pass inspection. I don't understand why hyundai should not be required to fix this problem. It comes up as a 1401 for emissions testing
The contact owns a 2002 hyundai accent. While refueling the vehicle, fuel would leak from the filler neck onto the ground. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 92,000.
The gas tank will not accept fuel at a reasonable flow from a pump. It trips the shut off early. Sometimes fuel splashes out when this happens. Many hyundai cars have this problem. From research, i found the following problems: 1) charcoal bits in the vent lines from the carbon canister- one owner cut open the canister and found a foam filter like in a window a/c that was damaged by gas allowing carbon to go into the vent lines clogging them and not allowing the tank to vent. Incompatable material used. 2) faulty check valve at the inlet of the gas tank does not open fully when refueling causing gas to back up the filler neck. 3) defective "sampling pump". This is in the vent system between the fuel filler pipe and the rear bumper. Pump does not operate when it should. 4) small filler tube. Gas pump nozzles in the uk had to be changed to a smaller size so that there could be some venting.the vent lines in my car seem clear. I am changing the check valve, and i will see if this improves the situation. It also seems that the hyundai dealers do not understand the problem and what causes it.

When putting gas in the car, the fuel pump clicks off every 10 cents or so as if the tank is full but it is not. Sometimes the gas oven runs back out of the tank as if it is overfilled and running over, but it is not. I live in nj, which is one of the two states that have full service gas stations. And gas station attendants constantly tell me that they encounter this problem specifically with hyundai's all the time! they have told me that they have also seen this with brand new hyundai models as well, so it's not a problem that has improved over the years since my dated 2002 model. Even the service tech atmy local hyundai dealership was all too familiar with this defect widely known with hyundai's when i spoke to him. He also quoted me a price around $600, which he said from his experience as a technician doesn't guarantee the problem to be fixed. There are cases of the problem coming back after the repair is done! i contacted hyundai with my concerns and to specifically ask why this widely known defect was not recalled and i did not get a real answer to my question. I have been dealing with this problem for some time. And looking at some of the other complaints filed, plus the people i've talked to (including hyundai employees), they have known about this common problem, but refuse to acknowledge it as a defect and fix the issue. Very frustrating.
Dome light and the door ajar sensor light continued to stay on. The part was replaced eight times.
The contact owns a 2002 hyundai accent. The contact stated that all three door handles, aside from the front drivers side, fractured and she was unable to enter the vehicle from the exterior. The dealer informed the contact that there were no recalls related to the failures. The manufacturer had not been notified. No repairs were performed on the vehicle. The approximate failure mileage was 34,000 and the current mileage was 35,000.

The contact owns a 2002 hyundai accent. The vehicle rolled backwards due to an easy release of theparking brake lever.
Pulled into the parking lot. I went to put it in park, but the car would only go in reverse. I was going forward in drive at the time. It started going in reverse. No matter what gear i tried, it would only go in reverse. I couldn't turn off the car. I kept trying to put it in park and eventually it worked. This car is not safe to drive. There are thousands of complaints about this same problem on line. I don't understand why this has not been recalled.
Problems with brake equipment on 2002 hyundai accent. *mr the passenger side front brake rotor, brake hose and pads were defective.the fluid was not returning to the master cylinder causing the passenger side brake pads wear out.there was a shimmy felt through the steering wheel, the tech found both front brake rotors disc warped, the transmission had a delay shifting, the wheels were out of balance, the front calipers had frozen in the right front wheel, the pads stuck in the holders due to the rust build up and noise could be heard and was traced to the passenger side brake hose and pads. *sc

The dealer has replaced the electrical component that controls the transmission, but it did not fix the problem. I am now being told that they have no idea when they will get a reconditioned one in, but i can get a brand new one in october. Both the dealer and hyundai have been totally unconcerned that i need this car to make a trip to help my disabled family members in ohio. I have now asked for a loaner vehicle to make the trip. And i am waiting to hear from them on that. I am following the steps necessary in case i need to proceed with a lawsuit based on the lemon law.

Dt*:the consumer stated on november 21, 2003 at 46,856 miles the original transmission was replaced; now the second transmission is failing.the failure caused the vehicle to shift hard from low gear to the high gear.while driving at speeds of 10 to 20 mph, it takes longer to shift from first to second gear.there is a vibration when shifting occurs.the manufacturer and dealership have been contacted and determined the transmission needs to be replaced again.

Bucks to drain the transmission and tune up car said that would fix it.it didn't we are still with the same problem,4th time dealership again told us nothing could be detected after three days of driving it.we are at the end of our rope. This was purchased as teen daughters first car to go to college in and it is not safe.what else should we do but try to contact a lawer.anyone have suggestions or good lawers?

April of 2008 our used 2002 hyundai accents transmission failed. The car was out of warranty. We went to a local dealer to get a replacement and a "refurbished" one was put in. The replacement has now failed 4 months after the 1 -year warranty deadline. How is it possible that this company can make such bad transmissions ? no recalls to my knowledge have been awarded.as a safety issue the transmission would stall and drop into 80 km safe mode this is a canadian bought vehicle.
Random idle acceleration (2000=4000rpms when should be idling) leading to surging of car.started a few months ago with a check engine light.dealer replaced transmission sensor, problem has not been solved.i have had car checked out at dealership, but the problem is random, and they have not duplicated it.has been happeining randomly for last few months, at least a couple times every time the car is driven to work--23 miles one way.must push the break as hard as possible to keep car from lunging when the problem occurs.
Intermittently transmission failed to shift/drive in reverse. Dealership was notified, but did nt resolve the problem.
While attempting to merge with traffic at 50 mph consumer depressed the accelerator which became stuck, and the vehicle did not respond. Engine revved, but there was no acceleration. Vehicle was nearly rear ended on three occasions.this vehiclehad three transmissions replaced since 7-2-2003.
Automatic transmission would "buck" during acceleration when vehicle was shifted from reverse into the drive gear.also, states vehicle would make a "clunking" noise when transmission "bucked".dealership examined vehicle, and could not reproduce problem.then, after consultation with manufacturer, dealership replaced transmission.
Was driving along at 60 mph. Stop at light, when ready to go, the car "bogged" and the car would not shift out of low gear, the check engine light came on. I pulled over, tested all auto. Trans. Gears, fine. Got to office. Turned off car for 1-2 hrs. Got back in car, started up, check engine light not on and the problem was gone?? i think the "computer brain" malfunction, is that possible and why???
When accelerating from a stop the transmission would not engage.intermittently the transmission slips between gears braking the vehicle creating wheel spin. The vehicle experienced the problem the first time at 350 miles.the dealer as been notified.nlm
The contact owns a 2002 hyundai accent. Whenever making turns the vehicle will slightly loose power.also whenever the vehicle was shifted into reverse it would still move forward. The vehicle was taken to the dealership , and the technician concluded that the transmission needed to be replaced. The current mileage is 94000, failure mileage was at 98000.updated 12/07/09 the consumer stated this is the second transmission that hasbeen installed in the vehicle. Updated 12/09/09.
This vehicle has been in for service 5 times between 18feb and 3jun of 2002. I am very dissatisfied with this vehicle. I have filled out all information to the best of my ability, as the vehicle is currently in for service. Transmission failed at 54,000 miles, it would not shift into high gear.
Automatic transmission failing.previously revved while in park.took to mechanic, problem seemed to go away.while on highway trying to pass other cars, after stepping on gas - car would jump/clunk/jerk into gear.on back road home, was revving higher than normal but didn't seem to want to go anywhere.sluggish and jittery response to increase in speed.mechanic said it has a whinny noise while test driving.exact mileage 54,854.still paying on car.purchased used.will contact dealer, although not sure still under warranty.
Dt*: the contact stated while driving various speeds a rattling noise was heard in the rear of the vehicle.after being driven to the dealer, it was determined the trans axle needed to be replaced.
While driving 55 mph, suddenly there was a popping noise from the front end of the vehicle. When this occurred the vehicle jerk forward and the motor locked up. This almost resulted in the vehicle flipping over.the clutch had blown up, which caused the motor to lock up. The cause of the clutch blowing up is undetermined.
Horn has broken 3 times in the last 7 months. Clutch went at 11,000 miles.windshield wipers broke at 11,000 miles.rear brakes need to be taken apart and cleaned because of excessive dirt/road material getting into brakes. Gas mileage poor since 9,000 miles.
Transmission clunk from reverse to drive, also when making a turn down a small hill will slip and buck. Dealer replaced internal solenoid 3 weeks ago to resolve, seemed to work, however problem is back. Will be taking back to dealer as soon as time permits.
The contact owned a 2002 hyundai accent. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the contact became unconscious and crashed into the rear of another vehicle. When the driver's side seat belt was fully extended it would not retract.
Motor vehicle crash at 35 miles per hour involving a 2002 hyundai accent 2 door and a minivan. The front end of accent collided with side panel of a minivan between front and rear door.accent was a hatchback style.in the hatchback area was an assortment of small items and a laundry basket filled with items weighing a total of approx 40 pounds.our concern was that upon impact the rear seat back which was in an upright position was "bowed" forward in the center of the seat.if anyone had been sitting in that seat they would have experienced significant trauma to their back.all visible damage to the car was to the front end of the vehicle.the driver's side door opened normally, the passenger side was able to be opened and closed and the hatchback worked normally after the accident.
While i have felt that i have been leading up to the problem that i am about to list for over a year with whining in the front left tire/brake area.i am getting ready for my fourth brakes on my accent in the past 18 months.finally in may of this year (2013) i started noticing that when i would press in the clutch the car would slow as if the brakes were being pressed. We took the car to our shop and they replaced the wheel bearing and brakes, brake lines, master cylinder, or as the mechanic says:, "we have replaced everything that we know to replace or repair for this problem". Well today, 08/15/2013 i managed to get my car to the mechanic for the same problem.this car has never been wrecked, i am the second owner, my sister-in-law and her husband were the original owners.this car was purchased in indianapolis off of the lot by them.

While driving and when brakes were applied they didn't hold, resulting in an accident.
When stopped, if you need to hold the brake pedal down, such as on a hill, pedal sinks slowly to the floor. It is worse when the car is warmed up.

On both 9/27/2004 and 1/13/2006 the rear brake cylinders and shoes had to be replaced because of leaking from the cylinder.on the second occasion, mechanics at doug's lynnwood mazda/hyundai did not notice the problem on the original visit (12/2/2005), and i had to bring it to their attention in order to get it fixed.
Consumer lost control of the steering. Vehicle was taken to the dealer, and it was discovered the spindles were broken, the brake line failed and there was an oil leak, but was unable to locate where the leak was coming from.

I got an alignment andall new tires. I was pulled in the garage to find out there was rust holes in the front end of the frame below the engine. I looked up recalls and there had been over 500,000 counts of damage to multiple different years and models. None of which included mine. I live in ny stage where roads are heavily salted for safety. The car has 158,000 miles on it and shouldn't have 6 inch holes in the frame. I shouldn't have to pay to get my frame rebuilt when this should be taken care of by hyundai. I was toldby multiple people to contact you if the dealership couldn't do anything. I researched enough to also find out it was required by the government to fix any problem relating to the problem i am having.

Having the vehicle stationary, i jacked it up to do some brake work in the front driver's side. The lower control arms (as well as various frame parts underneath) are extremely rusty. When lowering the vehicle using a floor jack (after doing the repair) the lower control broke. I feel very fortunate this happened in my yard on my property. This vehicle has only 84,000 miles.
I had just gotten off interstate 76 at route 14 after driving the posted speed limit of 70 mph. I came down the ramp and as i applied the brakes, the front left wheel locked up. Thank god it didn't happen on interstate 76. The traffic was very heavy with semi's all around along with regular traffic. I come to find out the front left lower control arm collapsed allowing the tire to come back against the left fender wheel well. It pulled the car to the left and i slid off the ramp onto the berm after trying to steer hard to right.i had to have the car towed. I've owned the car since july 14, 2014. I come to find out the right arm has already been replaced. When i bought the car, it had 80,362 miles. In todays world, that is low miles. If this had happened when i was traveling at 70 mph, someone could have gotten killed. How many more are running around like this. The ball joints appear to be good but the control arm rusted out to the point of weakness and collapsed. The car doesn't even have 100,000 miles on it. They need to recall all of these cars and have the control arms inspected. You cannot control the car even at 10 mph.

I was on a side street, thank god. On my way to the highway when i heard a horrible scratching, metal crunching noise. I had a hard time steering when i pulled into a parking lot my car just stopped. I looked, and my tire was sideways, the right lower control arm rotted and broke, the axle came out of the transmission. I spoke to hyundai and there is nothing they can do. I recently lost my job and would like to be reimbursed for this. If i would have been on the highway i could have been killed and caused a huge accident, due to not being able to turn my wheel. I want to know what can be done about this please. There was a recall due to this same exact reason and it is a huge safety issue.

Was driving down the road and heard something scrapping and vehicle quit moving had to be pushed out of a dangerous curve into a parking lot all transmission fluid leak out as the tow truck lifted it onto it's bed. Had to pay for the tow truck, and had only had the car for 6 days. While backing out in reverse, the consumer applied the brakes and the vehicle suddenly accelerated.there was no incident to report.the dealer replaced the sensor assembly.when the vehicle accelerated on its own, the consumer applied the brakes which almost caused her to hit her father.when the vehicle started to rev, it was in park, then the consumer turned off the vehicle. *scc
Vehicle intermittently will not acceleratewhile driving. Dealer contacted, could not fix problem.
Vehicle accelerated at high rpms when starting or 10 minutes after driving at any speed. Dealer was notified andwas unable to duplicate the problem.
The contact owned a 2002 hyundai accent. She stated that while at a service station and driving in reverse less than 5 mph the vehicle accelerated on its own and began to spin in circles. A crash occurred. The vehicle was turned off; however, the engine was still running. There were damages to the vehicle.she also sustained a neck injury. The vehicle was towed to the dealer and when they tried to take the vehicle off of the tow truck, it started accelerating on its own again . They diagnosed it stating that the failure was caused by a broken motor mount. The vehicle was destroyed. No repairs were made. The failure and current mileages were 54,063.updated 4/7/2010updated 09/02/10
Sudden power surges (rpm up to 3000) when putting in park. Occasional surges when trying to drive at normal city speeds (25-35 mph). Sometimes engine starts and then cuts off after having sat for several hours. Second start-up runs fine.when braking, engine sometimes surges and requires heavy pressure to not collide with car in front. Vehicle can take off on its own if i just remove foot from brake. When brought last to dealer, they could find no problem.
Intermittant - engine revs at high rpm's in all gears upon start-up. Engine revved while driving it into a parking lot while in second gear. Kept revving. In 3rd and 4th gears, feels like the car wants to just "take off" without me giving it any more gas.
On a 2002 hyundai, the throttle sensor malfunctioned in 2004. This causes the engine to rev to very high levels (as high as 4-5000 rpm) and the car lunges forward; braking barely seems to hold it back. It is like a car possessed. The first time this happened, my husband was backing out of the garage, and the car shot out of the garage, into the alley, and he nearly hit the garage behind us. The throttle sensor was replaced. In early 2006, it failed again. I was driving in traffic and the car leapt forward; i had to repeatedly tap the brake to avoid hitting the people in front of me. Without using the brake or the gas, the car would move at 20 mph. It happened again the following morning when i started the car. The engine revved very high without me ever touching the gas. It happens when the car has just been started and when it has been running. Putting the car into park and tapping the gas will often cause the rpms to go down. After the 2002 incident, the service center casually mentioned this has happened to other hyundais. During the most recent repair, i made a point of mentioning this was the 2nd time this malfunction had occurred; the mechanic didn't express any feelings or impressions about this. The car is still covered, for the remainder of 2006, under a bumper-to-bumper warranty, so this has been repaired twice by the dealership. However, this is an alarming malfunction that could cause a serious accident, and it seems to be habitual for this car -- every 2 years-- and perhaps for others too. It's made me nervous about owning the car much longer.
The vehicle accelerates on its own and stalling on highways.cause unknown.tune up and all other attempts to resolve with no improvement in condition.
The vehicle accelerates on its own due to the throttle body sensor failure. The sensor was replaced.
