The engine run hotter than usual in heavy traffic and going up hill at higher rpm .all fans are running ok as expected but still when ever stuck in traffic at75 degree temperature outside the engine temperature seem to creep up higher towards the red mark .this is a safety issue as if the engine spill coolant , i and my passage risk getting into an accident due to slippery surface.had it check by the pro and they are pointing at the ecm . This should be fix and ishonda's responsibility . Many other owners had previously complained of similar issues.

The contact owns a 2003 honda goldwing. While idling with the rpms under 1,000, the motorcycle made a loud abnormal noise. The contact stated that when the motorcycle exceeded 1,000 rpms, the noise seized. The vehicle was taken to the dealer. The technician was unable to diagnose the failure. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 66,000.

Recall notice on the frame weld of motorcycle. Dealership welded only about 45 percent of the frame instead of 100 percent. *la recall#03v350000 *sc the consumer also stated the dealer sold him the motorcycle knowing that it had an overheating problem and eventually a recall was issued.

Motorcycle overheats if ridden at slow speeds 100% of the time - could cause coolant overflow which would get on rear wheel causing an unsafe condition

Honda completely redesigned the gold wing motorcycle, including an entirely new engine, beginning with the 2001 model. Overheating has been a stubborn problem with the 2001, 2002, and now the 2003. Honda denies the problem and has told us to continue using the motorcycle regardless of reading of the gauge. Mine has gone beyond the redline, on occasion. I stopped and called dealer. Dealer says honda says not to worry, ignore the gauge. Many other owners have experienced coolant loss when this occurs. Some have had radiator temps measured with ir equipment during these conditions and found to be well above 240 deg. While no immediate damage has been apparent to me, i am concerned of long term effect and unrevealed damage to the engine. Further, the coolant overflow tank is located under and behind the engine, just in front of the rear tire. If coolant leaks, as some have experienced, it places a slick substance on the road just ahead of the rear tire leaving a high risk of loss of control to the driver and others who pass over the spot.

Engine will overheat during sustained low-speed operation, such as slow-moving traffic in a construction zone.temperature guage needle will move all the way to the red mark, unless the motorcycle is either stopped or speeded up.eventually, coolant is expelled onto the ground directly in front of the rear tire and onto the tire, due to the location of the coolant overflow tank and its overflow hose. Ts

Honda gl1800 goldwing.when drivingbetween 10 to 20 mph engine overheats and expends coolant directly in front of the rear tire causing a serious loss of traction which could lead to a crash.additional driver distractions are created. Ts

Vehicle overheats at low speed operation, concern of boiling over, engine failure which while manuevering on a motorcycle could be very dangerous.

Motorcycle has a tendency to overheat when driven slow, ie., in traffic or when going through a construction area. This is very dangerous, as it takes away my concentration to drive, since i have to keep a constant eye on the temp gauge. This happened to me twice so far, once in a traffic jam, and the other in a construction zone. There is also the very real possibilty of loosing coolant in this overheating situation, and getting it on the rear tire, which would result in loosing controi of the bike. If i am forced to pull over due to overheating, i run the risk of me and/or my passenger to be struck by a passing vehicle. Thank you for your time in reviewing this potentially dangerous problem.

No summary listed for above vehicle.

The design of the honda goldwing cooling system fails miserably in heavy, slow moving traffic conditions found at construction sites, metro areas, parades, etc.in my cases as the engine temp rose to the upper limits i was hemmed in by traffic and unable to pull over to allow the engine to cool.serious personal hazards are presented by this design flaw:1) being struck by other vehicles while sitting along the side of the road.2) many side road surfaces not suitable for pulling off onto.3) many roads not having a shoulder.4) coolant vented by bike falls directly in front of rear wheel creating an extremely slippery surface and increasing the potential of serious harm and even death to rider and passenger.

After 15 minutes in stop and go traffic the cycle overheated (the temp gauge was in the red area).the consumer pulled to the side and the cooling fan could not be heard.*nlm

Engine overheats at low speeds, coolant spews onto roadway and rear tire slips in the coolant.must pull to side of road to avoid engine damage, very hazardous.radiator fans are running as designed during overheating situations, occurs at low speeds from 15 to 25 mph.

My 2002 honda goldwing 1800 transmission failed almost causing a wreck. The transmission would jump out of 5th gear on occasion and gradually got worse until the transmission failed completely. I had to have it hauled home and then later on had to take it to the shop and have transmission repaired out of my pocket. $3200 worth. It is a very unsafe issue and needs to be addressed before someone gets injured.there are several cases of this from various people i have talked to and honda has decided to ignore the complaints so we have no other choice but to file a safety complaint. Someone is going to get killed if this issue is not resolved!!!

Transmission on 2003 honda goldwing jumps from 5th to 4th gear. This happens often and has for several occasions. It causes the potential of loss of control and a crash.

My incident with a spontaneous downshift from 5th gear to 4th gear (ghost shift) on my 2003 honda goldwing motorcycle occurred on highway 89 north of flagstaff, arizona in 2007. It was totally independent of any input by me. It actually downshifted and immediately upshifted completely by itself.i am not seeing any pattern of this issue. It has happened three times since the initial occurrence with no known 'trigger' or clue that it is about to happen.

2003 honda goldwing.consumer writes in regards to motorcycles sudden power loss and brake system failure accident.

The contact owned a 2003 honda gl1800 motorcycle. While riding approximately 35 mph, the rider lost control of the motorcycle and crashed off the side of a 25 foot hill while attempting to maneuver a blind hairpin turn. The rider was fatally injured. A police report was filed. The motorcycle was destroyed. Photos from the police report indicated that during the incident, only the front brakes were applied, and the rear brake did not apply. The failure occurred after the rider descended down a winding road for approximately 15 miles, causing the brakes to be used excessively. The cause of the failure was not determined. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The dealer was not contacted. In december 2015 (after the incident), the contact received a recall notice for nhtsa campaign number: 15v700000 (service brakes), which was related to the failure. The failure mileage was 8,000.updated 8/15/18

Back brake fails completely

The contact owns a 2003 honda gl1800. While driving at 65 mph, the brake pedal was applied however failed to respond. The contact noticed there was no brake fluid in the reservoir. The motorcycle was taken to cycle shack north (1101 interstate 45 s, conroe, tx 77301 (936) 756-9711) where it was diagnosed that brake fluid was leaking and the position control valve needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer stated that nhtsa campaign number: 05v01000 (service brakes, hydraulic) was completed in 2005 and no further assistance was provided. The failure mileage was 42,000.

Dt:the contact owns a 2003 honda goldwing. When applyingthe back brake there wasbad vibration which resultedin extendedstopping distances.the contact stated ifthe brake werepressed harder, at that point, themotorcycle would come to a stop.the dealership recommended to bleed the brakes, and this should take care of the problem.the dealership bled the brakes, but this did not resolve the problem.the dealership contacted the manufacturer and suggested they could change the brake fluid, but that was about all that could be done about this.the contact had problems with the brakesfor approximately a year, and the dealership kept tellinghim that he was overheating the brake fluid.they did suggest reading theowner's manual whichrecommended the use of both front and back brakes at the same time.the contact'sconcern was that if the motorcycle had a linked braking system which actuated the back and front brakes then why would oneneed to use both brakes at once.the dealership stated after replacing the fluid, if the problem was solved, the contact will have to cover the cost, but if it didn't remedy the problem, he would not have to pay for the replacement.

Honda goldwings have a problem with a deceleration front end wobble.as you decelerate from around 35 mph with your hands lightly resting on the handle bars, the front end goes into a violent wobble.honda of america claims it is just a characteristic of the 1800 goldwing, however it poses a very serious safety concern.there are several blogs on the internet of people expressing their concern of this problem...apparently there is a fix by replacing the bearing in the front wheel with a tapered bearing, however this should be the responsibility of the manufacturer...thousands of honda goldwing 1800cc bikes have this problem.

I purchased the motorcycle on 11/05/16 from imotorsports in elmhurst ill.from day one it had a very bad wobble in the steering and if i was not holding strongly onto the bike it would definitely crash. After asking for a repair to this wobble imotorsports manager jason said they would install a new set of tires on it and this should solve the problem. The bike only had 15,158 miles on it so i thought for sure this would be the answer. Jason told me that after the bike got used to the new tires that the wobble would go away. The wobble would occur anytime it was in motion from 15-45 mph. The wobble never got any better and being a bit naive to purchasing a vehicle from a dealer the 30 day warranty expired and when i returned on 12/15/16 they said they couldn't help me. Now i have a $13,000 motorcycle that i am afraid to ride. I rode it a few miles in april and may and june of 2017 and because of the wobble, the plastic shroud that is surrounding the timing chain cracked on both sides. I am at a stand still now and dont know what to do. I also dont know if the several recalls on this particular year goldwing have been attended to. I feel so bad about this and i dont know what to do. I saved every penny i could for 6 years to purchase this motorcycle and now i cant and am afraid to ride it.

I own a 2003 honda goldwing motorcycle which i purchased new late in may of 2003, vin#[xxx]. It is still, at this time, within the factory warranty period. Since it was new, the front fork and handlebars have had a strong wobble at speeds of 35 mph-45 mph. I have taken it to several honda motorcycle dealers and am told that many goldwings do this and there is nothing that they can do about it. At my own expense, i have had the front tires re-balanced on several occasions, replaced the front tire and rear tire. Had the steering head bearings readjusted to factory specs, and have added a fork brace, all to no effect. I have called honda's customer service department in california three times about this situation, and each time i am told "it is a trait of the motorcycle, honda will do nothing about it, and that i should keep both hands firmly on the grips at all times to minimize the effect". This is not a solution at all, since even with both hands firmly on the grips, the fork still wobbles strong enough to numb my wrists. As an automotive professional, i know that this wobble can not go on and not effect the performance of the related parts such as the fork tubes, front axle bearings, steering head bearings, front tire and the rest of the motorcycle for that matter. By researching the problem online at gl1800riders.com, i have found that many owners have had great results with replacing the original equipment steering head ball type bearings with aftermarket produced tapered roller type bearings. I, myself, am having this change made at my local dealer, again, at my own expense, as i type this report. Given the number of owners who have this problem, and the fact that honda will do nothing about it, i would respectfully ask that your department look into the situation to see if any corrective action should be taken by honda. I would hate to see someone hurt or killed because this went unresolved.updated 07/19/2012 information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(

I have a honda gl1800 goldwing motorcycle.all these bikes have an issue with front end wobble while decelerating between 35-45 mph.my honda dealer says honda knows about it but haven't recalled it yet because they have so many other recalls currently active.a review of a web site of owners called gl1800.org has hundreds of people talking about this problem and how to fix it.my honda dealer says the bearing in the steering column isn't sufficient and it would cost me about $300 to have it replaced.my bike is still under warranty.honda won't repair it.here's the real problem.last night during a light rain i was traveling home from work.as i was decelerating around a downhill corner, around 40 mph, the wobble became so bad my front wheel literally slipped out from underneath me causing me to go down on the right crash bar for a moment.apparently it wasn't my time to go because as quickly as i went down i came back up and maintained control of the bike.i'm still puzzled how this happened and how i recovered from it.but i know the cause of it.it's the front end wobble due to sub standard bearings being used.these discussions on websites and with honda have been ongoing for well over two years.does honda have to have documented deaths before something can be done?i don't understand how such a safety issue can continue to go on and on with no action by such a reputable company.please help to fix this safety problem before lives are lost.this is a very serious problem.

Front end wobble on a 2003 honda goldwing motorcycle.

At speeds between 30and 35 mph and with hands off or loosely gripping the handlebar, the front wheel of my honda gl 1800 goldwing develops a severe wobble.i have added a superbrace to resolve the issue, but this did not eliminate or reduce the wobble.

Dt*:the contact stated the front tire had excessive wear on the left side.the dealership determined the fork was uneven.the fork and wheel bushings were replaced.

I own a honda motorcycle, goldwing 1800, with 8,153 miles on it.prior to today's date 1 feb 06, i noticed that the inside of the trunk lid was being worn away, the inside of the trunk lid is sustaining noticeable indentations where this wearing away is occurring, by plastic tips on the outside of the trunk edge, which were also being worn away.if this continues there will be a hole in the trunk lid where this wearing is occurring.the honda dealership insists that this is normal wear and tear.i do not understand how a factory part that is destroying another factory part, body panels, can be considered wear and tear.

The contact owns a 2003 honda goldwing gl 1800 motorcycle. The contact stated that while the vehicle was being serviced by the dealer, the dealer advised the contact that the left side of the motorcycle frame was cracked. The manufacturer was contacted but the vehicle was not repaired. The failure and the current mileages were 103,000.

Honda safety recall service bulletin gl1800 #14 revised: september 2008 states that my motorcycle is one of the affected units for the recall (i.e. The frame welds need to be reinforced).that work has never been done.however, the records for doing a vin check only go back 15 years, anda local honda dealer says no fix is needed.

Told by honda the frame recall was done in 2012. In 2020 i inspected the frame and there are cracks in the frame again where the recall stated they would be. The replacement frame is cracking. Both major cracks are at the welds at the rear passenger foot pegs

The contact owns a 2003 honda gl1800. The contact stated that upon inspection it was discovered that the frame was fractured. The contact indicated that the fracture was located at the mid section of the left side of the motorcycle. The cause of the failure was not determined. The local dealer trikes by rodney located at1672 linden ave, zanesville, oh 4370 was notified of the failure. The manufacturer was not yet notified. The contact was informed that the vehicle was not included in the nhtsa campaign number: 05v027000 (structure). The failure mileage was 138,000.

Trunk wear that may create a hazard to other drivers.

Frame crossmember at the shock/center stand is cracked on both sides of the corss member at the location of the welds.these cracks are almost entirely around the welded area.

There was a cracked weld in the frame of the bike which supported the rear suspension. The manufacturer. Suggested that the owner go to an authorized honda dealership and have them to disassembled it and then take it to a contracted welder and have it reassembled. The owner stated it could take up to 60 days and owner did not feel secure of this type work. He preferred to have the frame replaced or given a new bike and not a welding job. Owner stated t he welded frame could brake and cause serious injury, if traveling at high speeds. Provide further detail.

My 2003 honda goldwing (gl1800) has developed two cracks on a frame crossmember below and behind the center stand. This was determined by the mechanic at the dealership where i have my vehicle serviced. When coming in to visit he informed me that he needed to check my frame by direction of the regional honda motorcycle rep. Upon inspection two cracks were discovered on either side of the crossmember. Discussions with the mechanic revealed that 16 other bikes in the texas area also have either one or two cracks in the same location as mine. According to web sites of gl1800 owners texas is not the only vicinity to exhibit the problem. Additionally, the cracks are on a mojority of 2003 gl1800 honda motorcycles. When contacted by honda they indicated that they are aware of the problem and are requesting that i return my motorcycle to them for study. They are replacing my vehicle with a new 2003 in an exact replacement with all options installed etc.

I have a 2003 honda goldwing gl1800 motorcycle with abs, vin number [xxx].on 9/6/03 i took the motorcycle to my dealer, hinshaw's motorcycle store, 1611 west valley hwy, auburn, wa 98001, for service.on 9/9/03 i received a message from the service manager at hinshaw's.when i returned his call on 9/10/03 i was told that my motorcycle was an affected unit in a recall by the manufacturer for a crack in a cross member of the frame.i went to the dealer on 9/10/03 and looked at the frame and took several photos of the crack.i was told by a member of the service department that a meeting was held with a honda representative concerning my motorcycle.i was shown the "repair" that would have been made to the frame under the terms of the recall had there been no crack but that no determination had yet been made as to what would be done with my motorcycle.on 9/13/03 i was told that the motorcycle would be shipped to honda's manufacturing plant in marysville, ohio, the next morning.the service manager said that as far as he knew the frame would either be replaced or placed in a jig for rewelding.i have not heard from a representative of honda, as yet, concerning this matter nor have i given any authorization that i am aware of for these so-called repairs to be made.i have doubts about the quality of any repairs that may be made to the frame of this vehicle and wonder what other options are available in this matter.i've heard that some goldwing owners received new replacement motorcycles, others have had just the frames replaces, and still others have had nothing done by honda because their vin numbers were outside the range stated by the manufacturer even though the same signs of cracking/failure in the frame were evident.my confidence in the quality of this vehicle, and in the customer service of the manufacturer (honda) to this point, has severely diminished.i hope that a satisfactory resolution can and will be achieved.*lainformation redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia)

Problems with vehicle's frame breaking.*mr consumer would like honda held responsible for properly repairing the frame.*ph

The frame in my 2003 honda gold wing has cracked. The bike has been ridden normally two up most of the time and has never been in a accident. The 2003 honda gold wing has only 45,000 miles or so. This motorcycle was already involved in a safely frame recall ordered by the government in late 2003. This frame crack is in a spot on the motorcycles frame that requires that you lay under the bike to inspect.it's very tight and hard to view without a magnifying glass and good light source. This defect will be missed by most ownersunless you have some knowledge about this possible frame defect. Left alone it's only a matter of time and miles before this crack will spread around the entire frame tube and cause separation of the frame member. There have been many reports of this type of frame failure on the honda gold wing message boards on the internet.

I was riding my 2003 goldwing gl1800 motorcycle and came to an area of the road with construction, there where several signs indicating for motorcycles to use caution and bumps.after riding thru this area and getting back to what appeared to be normal road surfaces, i came across a cut out in the road about 2 feet wide with 3 small wash boards potholes. I had no choice but to ride thru this cut-out at a 90 degree angle as to be as smooth as possible and when i came out of this bump it was like i had a flat tire. There was a load bang and grinding as i tried to keep the bike upright and come to a stop.the bike behind me noted a load noise as well as sparks from the bikes suspension and pipes bottoming out.i luckily was able to stop safely without crashing and after further inspection it was determined, that it was not a flat tire, nor a suspension issue. But it turned out to be the frame has broken in 2 places, allowing the rear tire to go up into the fender well of the bike, with the center stand and exhaust pipes dragging on the ground.had this happened at a place other than where i was going perfectly straight, this would have resulted in a terrible crash. I am thankful that i am unhurt but left with a bike that in my estimation is junk and i wonder how i could ever feel safe riding this bike again. I purchased this bike from a private party who had indicated to me that this bike had been in for the frame recall as well as the bike being owned and maintained by a honda employed and trained technician.i currently have the motorcycle at a honda dealer and am awaiting the answer from honda about if they will fix.i have also found out that this bike had never been recalled or inspected or repaired and wonder why i never received a notice that this motorcycle had never been fixed.i have owned it for 3 years now.i am lucky that i was not hurtseriously and honda does right and fixes this bike without any cost to me. How can i know it won't happen again.

Motorcycle frame breaks, allowing rear suspension to drop to roadway.

The frame on my 2003 honda goldwingcracked april of 2008. The frame tubing broke completely on the left side, and the tubing on the right side was cracked 3/4 of the way around. I had a trike kit on the bike, and at first thought was the problem but after checking around, i found this has happened before to other bikes. So anyway the frame was replaced, and upon inspecting the new frame i found a nice good size gusset on the tube that was broken on my original frame. I also notice the part number of the frame had been changed from the original part number. I have pictures of both frames.

I own a honda gl1800 and i received a letter from honda america in reference to possible cracks in my gl1800 frame. I contacted my dealer (rick case) and the service writer informed me that they were going to employ a customers machine shop to weld my frame and that they will need my bike for an extended period of time. This is not satisfactory solution to me because i feel if the welds are cracking in the first place there must be a problem with the metal of the frame.i would like to know what nhtsa findings or suggestions are and who will certify the welder orthe process to which the repairs are made? do i have an option to refuse repair and expect replacement?*la

Honda goldwing 2003,rear suspension crackes/breaks,causing lose of control to turn

I was riding my motorcycle about 45 mph and hit a pot hole when the frame holding the rear suspension broke! droping the rear end down to almost touching the ground. I was able to maintain control of the bike but had i been making a turn a crash would have happened.honda says it would repair the damage by sending the bike back to the factory, but it has been as of now still at dealer for 6 weeks with no results. I cannot seem to get honda to give me any answers as to when the repairs will be made.to me totally unacceptable for a major safety issue.

On my 2003 honda goldwing with 3445 miles as i started around a 20 mph curve in atlas mi the frame separated, the part of the frame that holds the center stand and the rear suspension allowing the bike to drop almost to the pavement. The tire was stopped only by the plastic inner fender that started to melt. Honda's only explanation is that the weld failed. *nlm
