Started motorcycle as normal went in reverse then to destination, could not shut bike down even with kill switch. Caused me to dump the bike with me on itmotorcycle is a 2002 honda goldwing 1800. Purchased in 2001, no other drivers.

My f1 light came on while driving.since my goldwing is a conversion to a trike, the kickstand was fixed and is inoperable.on the public highway, trike was running very rough and smelled of a very lean fuel mixture and stalling at every traffic light and had to be restarted.a very unsafe condition. I took it to my licensed honda mechanic and he knew immediately that it was the computer.he stated if i would have driven it in that condition the catalytic converter would have melted and really caused problems.another unsafe condition.my mechanic said it was a problem with the location of the o2 sensor being placed too far back in the exhaust in 2001-2005 models.the problem was fixed by honda in 2006 and following.the computer and installation cost $997.23 and the problem should have been subject of a recall.honda apparently knew it but didn't do anything about it.

The contact owns a 2002 honda goldwing 1800.while driving 60 mph, the vehicle shut off in traffic.the vehicle was taken to the shop and several parts were replaced.however, the failure continued.the vehicle has been back in the shop now for five weeks and the dealer is unable to determine the cause of failure.the current and failure mileages were 16,732.

2002 goldwing radio will lose power 2 or 3 times while driving. Then when stopped and turned off, upon trying to restart there is no power to the digital control console or starter. Have to remove positive battery cable and re-attached to regain power to crank bike.

This motorcycle pegs the temperature gauge in the red whenever it is in slow moving traffic. It has overflowed coolant on one occasion. This is very scary and unsafe due to the coolant overflow being in front of the rear tire. Honda of america refuses to admit this is a problem and will not repair it.i have read many many reports of the same problem with other owners of the same vehicle. It seems to be an inherent problem with this model supose it will take someone having an accident before honda will take notice. I hope not.

The bike pegs the water temp gauge when you travel between 10 and 30 mph in low gear.reported to honda and my dealer.they state they know of the problem but have no fix.they say the bike was not made to be in stop and go traffic. Something has to be done to force honda to fix the problem

Temperature gauge has a tendency to go into the red while being driven.the owner was instructed by honda motor company to pull off the road and check the anti-freeze, fans are running, etc.,the problem also exsisted with the 2001 models but was modified.honda motor company is telling him that they can not do anything at this time.nlm

Driver, passenger, and general motoring public safety is compromised with the honda gl1800 model motorcycle. Engine temperature rises to an unsafe condition as indicated on the manufacturers temperature gauge when vehicle is driven at city speeds of less than approx. 30 mph, or when detained in stop and go congestion traffic with the same speed example. The condition severly distracts and impedes the safe operation of the vehicle and effects not only the driver and passenger but other motorist as well, when the motorcycle operator is trying to relocate themselves into a place that would allow engine temp. To return to normal ie: ( find a place to park, out of traffic, to allow the foward designed air flow of fans to return coolant temp to normal after time, or speed up enough to facilitate additional air flow thru radiators to allow engine temps to return to normal. ) either situation can and does place people in a dangerous unsafe situation. Should the repeatable and predictable low mph high engine temp. Reach the point of coolant overflow, either by not being able to relocate the machine to allow cooling as stated above, or go unnoticed by normal driving distractions, the drain tube is located in such a manner as to allow coolant to be expelled in the proximity of the rear tire, thus causing an additional unsafe condition whereby traction would be compromised. This model machine is safety compromised with its inability to properly deal with engine temperatures under normal everyday low speed, and or stop and go driving conditions at speeds below 30 mph. The potential situation(s) whereby someone is going to be injured or killed by trying to avoid or remedy high engine temperatures and or loss of traction due to engine coolant overflow at the speeds i have spoken about severly compromise the safe operation of these models.

On the day that i bought my motorcycle i rode home through the "mixmaster" in dallas, tx at a time when, due to an accident, traffic was stop and go for many miles.i soon noticed my temperature guage rising to the hot point on the indicator.i pulled over and let the motorcycle cool down and waited for traffic to clear to procede home.i have not puut myself in the same or similar situation as yet although i could find myself there at any time.the over heating of the engine is a problem that honda will not address in a recall to repair the problem.

The contact owns a 2002 honda gl1800 motorcycle.while traveling 14 mph, the motorcycle would overheat and shut off.the dealer stated that the ecm was failing.the estimated repair cost was $1,000.the vehicle has not been repaired.the contact called the manufacturer and was informed that no compensation would be provided because the motorcycle was not under recall.the failure mileage was 19,000 and current mileage was 21,000.

When riding my goldwing between 5 and 15 miles an hour, the temperature guage quickly goes to full red and pins there until i stop or go faster. Niether option is a safe one in todays traffic. If i were to boil over, the fluid will pour out in front of my rear tire causing an accident. This problem is wide spread and honda has done nothing to fix it in the three years they have been making this goldwing.

Temperature gauge rises whenever motorcycle is driven at slow speeds, regardless of outside temp.driving in 1st or 2nd gear through a neighborhood or a county park causes temp gauge to rise toward red danger mark. Driving through mountains, steep uphills with no place to pull over, temp gauge rises to red mark. Owner's manual says to pull over if temp gauge rises to red mark. This is not always possible without possible injury if there is no place to pull over without stopping traffic or falling off edge of road if there is no shoulder. Coolant can spill out from overheating, causing rear tire to skid or slip, causing injury of rider or passenger.

When operating motorcycle in heavy traffic or other slow operating condtions, between 10-18 miles per hour, the temperature will immediately rise into the red zone causing sever overheating conditions. The overflow tank will then deposit antifreeze on the ground, ahead of the rear tire. On a motorcycle this can be a deadly condition. Honda denies problem exists and advises riders to either ignore gauge or do not ride under those conditions. This is completly unacceptable and the honda motorcycle company should recall and repaior this dangerous condition.

Driving slower in heavy traffic causes engine temperature gauge to go in the red.

My motorcycle was subject to the june 2003 engine cooling campaign which included replacement of the ecm and other adjustments. I had my bike repaired on july 30, 2003 at honda of milpitas (r/o 94030949). Since the campaign repairs were done, the bike has had a surging problem at 1500 rpm. When riding, or if the bike is stationary, when i open the throttle to 1500 rpm, the engine speed drops to 1000 rpm and then jumps back to 1500 rpm. This will go on for as long as i hold the throttle at 1500 rpm. While this is not a problem when the bike is stationary, it is a big problem when riding. When riding in parking lots, in traffic or when making low speed turns, i frequently run the engine around 1500 rpm and when i hit that rpm, the engine speed drops without warning. On several occasions i have almost dropped the bike in a sharp turn when the engine speed dropped. Since i cannot safely watch the tachometer and the road at the same time, it's very hard to drive around that engine speed. Not only is this behavior annoying while riding, it's also dangerous as i could be injured if the bike fell when the engine speed dropped. I took the bike back to honda of milpitas in june 2004 to have them look at the problem. Both the service manager and the technician confirmed the problem but said it was an ecm mapping problem and that american honda would not authorize them any time to troubleshoot and repair the problem (r/o 94034826).

My 2002 gl1800a has a cracked weld on the frame under the seat area and is not safe to ride.the motorcycle also overheats in slow traffic on warm days, causing me to have to pull over and let it cool down.

I have ridden the motorcycle four times in traffic and each time the temperature gauge indicated a reading that according to the manual was unsafe to the operation of the engine. Upon contacting the manufacturer they claimed that the temperature gauge was innaccurate and that overheating actually occurred only when coolant was dispersed from the cooling tank, contrary to what is stated in the manual. The motorcycle operates entirely different when running in the red zone, it is hard to shift and extremely hot. I cannot believe that riding at these constant elevated temperatures is safe for the engine or the rider. Additionally, independant testing of the coolant temperature confirms the degree at which the engine is operating at potential prolonged periods is indeed excessive and damaging. This causes one to have to find any shoulder, grass area or curb to pull over everytime one is stuck in traffic which is a normal occurance in everyday riding. There is no reason that this problem should occur on a regular basis in traffic where any other vehicle fairs just fine.

I have a 2002 honda goldwing. It has a recall for a over heating problem and a frame breaking problem. I do not at all feel safe on this motorcycle or would i if someone were to weld on an aluminum frame. This frame breakage is more thanjust something that will leave you standing beside the road. Honda needs to be made to replace these bikes, not modify them. My frame is not broken but is under recall and i do not feel safe with or with out the fix. *la

While riding brand new motorcycle in traffic my temperature guage "redlined".i was able to pull off the road fairly quickly where i waited 30 minutes for temp to come down.i then proceeded when motorcycler cooled enough.i have been unable to contact dealer at this time because they are closed sundays and mondays.i am a member of a large "goldwing club" and have read about others having the same problem.honda's reply is that the bike is not overheating it is just a "perception" that it is.ths was no perception ... The guage pegged out over the redline and there was much heat coming from the engine area.the gl1800 has an al block and i am concerned that damage may be done by the "perceived" overheating.honda will not do anything to fix the situation as i have seen many others with same problem and the answers they receive from honda.hopefully the nhtsa will be able to force honda to fix this very real problem.the vent tube is directly in front of rear tire!if the bike starts to spew coolant in front of tire this will be a very scary, slippery ride!help.

Bike will over heat when stuck in traffic for as little time as 5 minutes. Coolant does get blown out of bike and it does go on back of tire. This is a serious safety hazzard.dt

Engine overheating - i purchased the bike in july of 2002.i experienced overheating almost immediately.i took it to an authorized dealer in temecula california and had it checked out.they kept it for approximately one week and determined that there was no problem.i then contacted the honda cooperation and was told to take it back in.i did.again nothing.i am not overseas and have been here since oct 2002.i haven't ridden the bike and won't ride again as i am in the marine corps stationed abroad until 2005.i finally discovered this site and realized that there are many, many others having the self-same problems as i am having.i haven't ridden it enough to determine if there is anything else wrong with it as others have.i have not received any recall notices or anything.honda has my address stateside and overseas as i do receive my bill here.what is being done to remedy these matters/concerns of us who have paid in excess of $15,000.00?when one spends his/her hard earned money on "toys," we expect much better than this.*la

This water cooled motorcycle overheats every time it is riden slower than 20mph stop & go over a distance of about 1 mile or in about 8 minutes.the radiator overflows and gauge readings are in the red.both times this has happen the air tempature was less than 80 degress outside.i am concerned with having to stop in traffic with an overheating motorcycle.dealer does not know of a fix, waiting for honda of americato come out with a fix, which doe not appear to be avialable.

My concern with this 1 month old motorcycle is that it easily runs to the top of the temperature guage when operated at around 10-15 mph regardless of ambient temperature. It also should be stated how this defect relates to the issue of safety:for example, having to monitor the engine temperature gauge while driving could be hazardous ...this is proven with cell phone use while driving--very distracting and even more so if you are concerned that the engine may get too hot and seize, causing death or injury. I called honda motor corporation; who has acknowledged this condition, but i was advised that they do not have a fix for this condition.

This motorcycle has a constant and continual history of overheating.i have taken it to honda dealers and they all say there is awareness of the overheating problem but honda has elected to do nothing to correct the problem.i was told by my local honda dealer, pelham powersports, to continue to ride the motorcycle and don't be concerned with the problem.i feel it is a big problem and honda should do something to correct the problem or refund my purchase money.dt

Overheating at low speeds.

Engine consistently overheats,dropping fluids. Fluid overflow is directly in front of rear tire, and coolant loss could cause loss of traction and loss of control of cycle. Honda has not repaired and says it is not a problem i have talked via internet to hundread of people with same complaint and honda refuses to fix. Dealer told me not to both him anymore. Motorcycle has overheated 4 times and lost coolant 4 times in 2k miles. Honda says it is not overheated until coolant is lost ( right in front of rear tire).

If forced to travel at constant speeds of 10 to 15 mph the engine will quickly overheat into the red zone. This happens in slow severe traffic conditions unless i can either just stop or speed up to above 25 mph. I have reported this to my dealer but since it has not loss fluid i was told it is not a problem. This has occurred about five different times.

This problem shows up each time i find myself in stop-and-go traffic. Basically, whenever i am moving between 15-25 mph for a sustained period,motorcycle'stemperature guage rises to the redline indicating an overtemp problem ,and causing me to pull over and let it cool or, if possible, speed up over 30mph to cause airflow to bring the temperature down. When i reported the problem to my dealer, their response was that honda told them that they designed the bike for touring, not stop and go traffic.

This motorcyle will rapidly show overheating to the redline when exposed to standard urban traffic situations such as 10-15 mph city traffic. Have as yet to have coolant overflow, but coolant over flow tank is loacted in front of rar wheel which could cause injury if coolant leak went onto pavement on front of rear tire. Just wanted to get my name on the list of people who have had this specific pronblem with this model; so maybe honda will get it together and let us owners know of and enact a solution to this potentially dangerous problem. Many have reparted dealers and honda denying a problem even exists, so i hope to shoew that this condition is not an isolated few machines in a large produstion run. Thanks, john.

I now know that the gl 1800 has had over heating problems since they came out in 2001.this motor cycle over heats in stop and go traffic.the shop personnel told me to, not pay attention to the gauge...take off in third gear...run the motor cycle until it boils over.this is further reflected by the honda representative that contacted me.the shop, nor honda will put anything in writing.this issue is especially dangerous in freeway traffic and you can not get off of the road.

Numerous times the engine has overheated at 15 mph.it is sometimes very dangerous when you can't get out of heavy traffic to prevent overheating.if you can't get out of heavy traffic the temperature continues to climb until it dumps coolant on the ground, which of course is very dangerous on a motorcycle.i have had this problem since i purchased the unit in july of 2001.i have had it repeat the overheating several times a day up to several weeks in a row.it is time they do something to make the motorcycle safer to ride.any help you can provide will be greatly appreciated by myself and many other owners who are faced with this same problem.thank you.dt

The cooling system has overheated to the danger zone 3 times while riding a slow speeds. I owned the previous model ( a gl 1500 gold wing) and it never overheated under the same circumstances. In facton 2 of the overheating events i was riding in the company of 2 of the older 1500's who had no trouble at all. My concern, and it should be yours as well, is the overheatedcooling system dumping coolant on the road in front of my rear wheel. That could lead to serious injury. It appears that the factory has changed the airflow direction at low speeds in this model.

Came upon road construction where traffic was stop and go with in about three to four minutes the temperature gauge had moved into the red zone the second time the gauge was completely pegged. This was on 7/26/02 with about 1870 miles on the motorcycle. This just happened again on 8/24/02 and again it was in slow moving constructoin area thi is the third time now that it has over heated. The motorcycle only has 3871 miles on it. Thank you in advance for looking into this issue that honda has with the 2002 goldwing.

This new generation honda goldwing motorcyle released for model year 2001 has a cooling design defect that causes the engine to dangerously overheat when caught in stop and go traffic conditions.yesterday, (june 30, 2002) myself and two others also having 2002 goldwings were returning from a trip and found ourselves in a major traffic backup in a road construction area on us interstate 35 south of minneapolis, minnesota.all 3 goldwings overheated in the stop and go, single lane conditions.there was nowhere for any of us to safely pull over to shut the motorcycles off to cool.we were ultimately forced to drive on the narroe temporary right shoulder at high enough speeds to allow the rushing air to cool the engine enough to keep it from blowing up.this was extremely dangerous as those caught in the traffic backup thought we were trying to drive on the shoulder to ellude the congestion and people started pulling their vehicles out in front of us as we proceeded along the shoulder strip.this is a widespread condition with this specific model bike that honda is fully aware of yet refuses to do anything about.they won't even acknowledge that there is a problem.honda's customer service personnel have been instructed to tell everyone calling in about this issue to not worry about riding it with the temperature needle in the red zone unless it spews coolant...even though the coolant overflow tube discharges the coolant on the ground directly in front of the rear wheel, which is also a huge safety issue as the antifreeze can cause the rear tire to lose grip on the roadway.by officiallty advising us all to just keep riding with the temperature needle in the red zone, honda is directly contradicting the directive in the owners manual that states if the temperature needle enters the red to zone to immediately pull over and shut the vehicle off.continuing to drive will void the warranty.i hope you will help us all.it's hard to fight a big co without help!*

The traffic conditions warranted speeds under 20 mph max, with little stopped time. Motorcycle indicated overheated condition but did not spill coolant. Engine is entirely made of aluminum and will eventually fail if constantly subjected to overheated conditions. This is due to a defect in the design of the coolant system. The cooling fans cannot overcome ducted air when the bike is run between 10-35 mph for continual periods.

Vehicle's front end wobbles between 35 and 40 mph.* mrwhen the dealer was notified they stated that the front end wobbledbecause of the tires used. However they did not pay to have tires replaced on bike because they claimed that the consumer should have left the originals on. The consumer feels that the bike is unsafe to ride and it could cause an accident if not repaired.(when the cruise was set and if the vehicle was going 40 mph without a firm grip on the handle bars, the vehicle would shake)the bike also had an overheating problem. The consumer was told that was how the bike was designed.

This overheat problem will occur any time my speeds are at 10 to 15mph, such as stuck in slow traffic, regardless of the ambiant air temperature. The temp. Gauge will rise into the "red" zone very quickly. I have pulled over to let it cool off or when traffic allows,i can get back up to speed and it will cool off.

This is a motorcycle related problem. There are a number of owners of 2001-2002 goldwings that are experiencing overheating problems. This is a potentially serious problem. Spewed coolant could cause loss of control. A seized engine on the expressway could spell disaster. There is a design flaw with this m/c. The cooling fans blow forward at speeds around 10 or 15 miles per hour. If these speeds are sustained (traffic problems related to dot or accident), the bike overheats because the incoming air is cancelled out by the forward blowing fans causing stagnant air around around the radiators. Honda basically refuses to acknowledge a design flaw and blames it on the gauge. The nhtsa needs to go beyond honda's stonewalling and check this situation out before someone riding this m/c is hurt as a result of the overheating engine and cooling system. Thanks.

Overheated first time into red, no coolant loss because i was able to pull to side of road and allow engine to cool;overheated second time with coolant loss, not able to safely pull off side of road to allow engine to cool; engine temp gage has climbed to almost red zone numerous other times while cruising neighborhoods looking at real estate or while being caught in slow moving traffic. Only dumped coolant one time when not able to safely pull to side of road to allow engine to cool down, otherwise, it would have lost coolant several more times.

This motorcycle continues to over heat under specific conditions which honda corp refuses to address and primarily blames the operator for improper use.honda states that unless the motorcycle coolant overflows there's no problem and that the motorcycle was not designed to be ridden at less than 30mph.aluminum heads on the motor will not take constant 260deg heat without eventually failing.this should not be happening on an 18k+$ bike and hondas response has been horrible.he motorcycle will.

Motorcycle temperature climbed into the red/ fluid leak.mr. While riding the motorcycle, the consumer noticed the temperature gauge had raised, the consumer was able to pull over and discovered 1/2 of fluid coming from the top of the radiator, after 10 minutes the motorcycle was restarted and the temperature gauge went down.

Pulling off road on interstate to cool down is not safe.when traffic back up and causes me to drive as a very slow speed the motorcycle overheats into the read zone on the temperature. Gauge.dealer said that there is no service bulletin on a fix of this problem.i have checked on the internet and found many owners that are having the same problem.

While searching for parking location in large mall, approx. 5-8 min., the temperature gauge suddenly shot up to the red line.i quickly found spot to park motorcycle.i am very concerned about the potential of this motorcycle to overheat intraffic, parking situations and future long distance traveling trips!

My apologies for not reporting sooner.after the incident within a few hundred miles of buying the motorcycle new, cooling system overheating has happened numerous times.the first was most dangerour in that i was going up mt washington on a very narrow road.near the top i finally exceeded temperature redline in spite of using all recommended procedures.the manual said to stop and let fans cool.on a 12' wide road with no barrier to going over, this was difficult.i kept having to do this.finally had to turn around on dirt portion trying to balance m/c while doing u-turn at walking speed-forward, back, forward, until turned around.nearly lost balance several times in front of cars anxious to pass.in boston commuter traffic, it happens whenever congested with speeds 15-20 mph for more than a few minutes.very nerve-racking to be watching guage head for red and maneuver toward breakdown lane side as it gets to redline to preserve warranty in midst of angry traffic.otherwise, manual says we void warranty by mistreating.report to dealer resulted in mfr saying not designed for those traffic conditions.dealer said cooling system checked out perfectly.continues to happen regularly in hot and heavy traffic.if overheating is only when coolant comes out (according to mfr), then slippery coolant dumps straight to rear tire. Can't afford to test traction!

Vehicle gets very hot when traveling at speeds of 10-15 mph.higher speeds alleviate problem. Boil over of coolant could cause safety hazard if coolant contacts rear wheel.

While riding brand new motorcycle in traffic my temperature guage "redlined".i was able to pull off the road fairly quickly where i waited 30 minutes for temp to come down.i then proceeded when motorcycler cooled enough.i have been unable to contact dealer at this time because they are closed sundays and mondays.i am a member of a large "goldwing club" and have read about others having the same problem.honda's reply is that the bike is not overheating it is just a "perception" that it is.ths was no perception ... The guage pegged out over the redline and there was much heat coming from the engine area.the gl1800 has an al block and i am concerned that damage may be done by the "perceived" overheating.honda will not do anything to fix the situation as i have seen many others with same problem and the answers they receive from honda.hopefully the nhtsa will be able to force honda to fix this very real problem.the vent tube is directly in front of rear tire!if the bike starts to spew coolant in front of tire this will be a very scary, slippery ride!help.

Overheats to red line below 20 mph (heavy traffic).must pull over to side of road to cool which has led to near misses by other vehicles.

When operating motorcycle in heavy traffic or other slow operating condtions, between 10-18 miles per hour, the temperature will immediately rise into the red zone causing sever overheating conditions. The overflow tank will then deposit antifreeze on the ground, ahead of the rear tire. On a motorcycle this can be a deadly condition. Honda denies problem exists and advises riders to either ignore gauge or do not ride under those conditions. This is completly unacceptable and the honda motorcycle company should recall and repaior this dangerous condition.

At speeds between 15-25mph over a constant 5 to 10 minutes period (traffic situations) results in the overheating condition (the guage reads in the red zone).i am concerned because if the an overheat condition results in the bike discharging anti-freeze, it is discharged in front of the rear tire which could cause reduced road traction.this condition is causing riders to pull to the side of the road in sometimes dangerous situtations.honda response is to ignore the gauge and ride on even though the owners manual says otherwise.

When stuck in slow moving traffic going into the city the coolant temp gauge went deep into the red. With nowhere safe to pull off the road i was forced to proceed with the fear of the engine boiling over. After looking online at the gl1800 web sites it appears that this is caused by faulty manufacturing. Honda designed the radiator fans to blow the air foward up to a speed of 15 mph. Any faster than that they are designed to shut off and allow the ambient air to push through the radiators in the normal direction. Apparently this was done to try to keep some heat off of the rider at low speeds. However, when you are in travelling 10mph in warm conditions the 10mph incoming air is fighting against the air from the fans. This causes little or no air going across the radiator fins, thus causing the overheating condition.if the bike is stopped on the shoulder, the fans will push the air foward and allow the bike to slowly cool down. There is not always a shoulder to pull onto, and if the bike overheats the coolant overflow from the radiators is aimed directly in front of the rear wheel. A situation that can certainly cause loss of control and possible serious injury or death. The fans need to be mounted on the other side of the radiators so they can pull the air through. In the direction that nature intended. Will it take someone getting killed for them to remedy this. I certainly hope not, but so far they are in denial that this is a problem. I feel that this vehicle is unsafe to ride. I am not willing to risk me and my wifes life. This vehicle was bought with pleasure in mind. If nothing is done to alleviate this i will have honda buy the bike back from me with new jerseys tough lemon law.

Time motorcycle overheated at slow speed in bumper to bumper traffic.it overheated another time in bumper to bumper traffic and i was forced to split lanes and accelerate to drop the temperature.dt

I have ridden the motorcycle four times in traffic and each time the temperature gauge indicated a reading that according to the manual was unsafe to the operation of the engine. Upon contacting the manufacturer they claimed that the temperature gauge was innaccurate and that overheating actually occurred only when coolant was dispersed from the cooling tank, contrary to what is stated in the manual. The motorcycle operates entirely different when running in the red zone, it is hard to shift and extremely hot. I cannot believe that riding at these constant elevated temperatures is safe for the engine or the rider. Additionally, independant testing of the coolant temperature confirms the degree at which the engine is operating at potential prolonged periods is indeed excessive and damaging. This causes one to have to find any shoulder, grass area or curb to pull over everytime one is stuck in traffic which is a normal occurance in everyday riding. There is no reason that this problem should occur on a regular basis in traffic where any other vehicle fairs just fine.

This motorcycle pegs the temperature gauge in the red whenever it is in slow moving traffic. It has overflowed coolant on one occasion. This is very scary and unsafe due to the coolant overflow being in front of the rear tire. Honda of america refuses to admit this is a problem and will not repair it.i have read many many reports of the same problem with other owners of the same vehicle. It seems to be an inherent problem with this model supose it will take someone having an accident before honda will take notice. I hope not.

Engine overheats when travelling at low speed -- about 10- 15 mph.i have taken the bike to the dealer three times as well as called honda and they cannot fix it.when motorcycle is overheated, you have to stop or run the risk of ruining the engine.since this occurs in traffic conditions, it is very dangerous to stop, sometimes impossible.if you don't stop and the engine seizes, that will be even a greater danger.i have been told that it is not really overheating but merely a gauge problem.however, the motorcycle clearly is running very hot which causes other problems such as surging, difficulties shifting, difficulties in accelerating, etc.it is my understanding that this problem has existed in the 2001 models as well.

This provides a very dangerous environment for the rider and others on the highway due to the slippery nature of anti-freeze.

Driver, passenger, and general motoring public safety is compromised with the honda gl1800 model motorcycle. Engine temperature rises to an unsafe condition as indicated on the manufacturers temperature gauge when vehicle is driven at city speeds of less than approx. 30 mph, or when detained in stop and go congestion traffic with the same speed example. The condition severly distracts and impedes the safe operation of the vehicle and effects not only the driver and passenger but other motorist as well, when the motorcycle operator is trying to relocate themselves into a place that would allow engine temp. To return to normal ie: ( find a place to park, out of traffic, to allow the foward designed air flow of fans to return coolant temp to normal after time, or speed up enough to facilitate additional air flow thru radiators to allow engine temps to return to normal. ) either situation can and does place people in a dangerous unsafe situation. Should the repeatable and predictable low mph high engine temp. Reach the point of coolant overflow, either by not being able to relocate the machine to allow cooling as stated above, or go unnoticed by normal driving distractions, the drain tube is located in such a manner as to allow coolant to be expelled in the proximity of the rear tire, thus causing an additional unsafe condition whereby traction would be compromised. This model machine is safety compromised with its inability to properly deal with engine temperatures under normal everyday low speed, and or stop and go driving conditions at speeds below 30 mph. The potential situation(s) whereby someone is going to be injured or killed by trying to avoid or remedy high engine temperatures and or loss of traction due to engine coolant overflow at the speeds i have spoken about severly compromise the safe operation of these models.

I have an over heating problem with my gold wing motorcycle. Dealer has done all he can do to resolve the problem. He has been great. Bike will give a indication of overheating by the temperature dial going into the red or hot zone. Has been reported to honda as the dealer says he can do nothing more for me. I have lost coolant fluid on 2 occasions. Response to me from honda is that the bike will do that and to drive it and not worry about it unless there has been fluid loss. It occurs when driving at 10-15 mph in slow moving traffic. Once speed goes up to 30 mph or so, gauge will slowly come down. Have also been told by honda that when it occurs that i should "pull over and let bike cool down". Many other 01-02 gold wings have this problem and the other oners are given the same answers that i got. If there is coolant lost it goes down overflow tube directly in front of rear wheel and is a safety hazard. Also in many places you cannot just "pull over and stop" due to lack of shoulders and traffic conditions. This is a known problem among gold wing owners. Honda refuses to admit there is a design problem. Fans blow air out front of bike until speeds reach 15 mph than fans turn off. If you are driving at 15 mph in slow moving traffic and there is a 15 mph tailwind there is no air flow and bike overheats. If you are on a hill and due to traffic are forced to remain in 1st gear, bike will overheat in about 5 minutes can be duplicated on any 01-02 honda goldwing.

Motorcycle consistently overheats when driving at 10-15 mph for 3-5 minutes. This appears to be caused by a cooling fan which blows air forward instead of backward. When the cooling fan forward air speed equals the ambient front-to-back airflow speed, there is a net zero airflow over the radiator which causes the motorcycle to overheat.this overheating could cause injury if the overheating causes coolant to escape through the vent tube which would expel coolant directly in front of the rear tire.

These new generation honda gl1800 goldwings (2001-2002) appear to have a congenital design defect in the engine cooling system.the engine has two side mounted fans that are controlled to come on when the bike is travelling at 15mph or slower because the rush of ambient air is too slow to cool the engine by itself at those slow speeds.the problem exists when the bike is traveling between approximately 16 mph and 25 mph.the speeds in between the point where the fans are controlled to kick in (15mph or below) and the point where the ambient air is flowing over the engine fast enough to cool it without the assistance from the fans. (25mph)after about 10-15 minutes of driving in these conditions such as one regularly finds in heavy slow moving traffic, the temperature gauge starts to rapidly climb into the red "danger" zone.boilover can occur depending upon whether one immediately pulls the bike to the side of the road to let it cool,(which can be very dangerous on urban expressways) or find a way to get on to another road somehow where speed can be increased to cool it down.the cooling system does an adequate job in all other circumstances i've encountered so far...outside of what occurs from being in these conditions that require an ongoing speed of between 16-25 mph.to this point, honda seems content to dismiss the issue as not being a problem.they need to thermostatically trigger when the fans come on, based on temperature not speed of travel,just like the design they had on previous generations of goldwing motorcycles.they worked just great.

Dealership indicated the switch that turns the fans on are not working properly, they are faulty, and don't come on when they are suppose to because of a factory defect.

I recently purchased a new 2002 honda gl1800 motorcycle, and now have 4500 miles showing on the odometer.this motorcycle is experiencing the same overheating condition that has been well documented with the nhtsa.most recently, it overheated while stuck in traffic on the interstate with an ambient temperature of about 89 degrees.honda has recently begun a campaign to replace the engine control module and inspect/replace the heads and radiators.questions are being raised on many of the gl1800 web sites as to the effectiveness of replacing the ecm.there are some owners who have seen poor results from the ecm replacement and some have reported performance and gas mileage reductions with the new ecm.some owners state that this service campaign may just mask the effects of high temperature by recalibrating the temperature guage.as stated in previous complaints, this is a major safety hazard to have the motorcycle overheat in heavy traffic.please add this complaint to thegl1800 overheating population and continue to monitor honda's actions to ensure proper corrective actions are implemted to resolve the issue completely.

Motorcycle overheats, forcing driver to pull over in traffic, most usually, heavy traffic conditions.

At speeds of 5-20 in slow traffic or slow mountain roads it over heats, loses fluid reported to honda not sure whetherhonda wrote down information since they claim it is not over heating. With a closed system i should not have to refillwith antifreeze solution, since buy the motorcycle i've had to fill it twice. The first1 pint and two weeks ago 1/2 pint. The first time was last on a light ride it over heated on me, i was with a group driving slow to see lights, i don't know how long it was in the red before i noticed it.dt

My 2002 honda gl1800 has been into the dealer 6 times for repair of engine overheating.i have had the engine overheating recall work conducted twice on the bike.the first repair under the recall actually actually acerbated the overheating problem.the second recall repair only slightly improved the bike over its original delivered state.american honda refuses to do any further repairs that could rectify the problem.it appears that some of the gl1800 motorcycles have this inherent defect and others do not.honda apparent refuses to acknowledge that some people have an overheating problem which is not rectified by their ecm recall.the overheating makes the vehicle undrivable in heavy, congested traffic at low speeds.honda says to pull over to the side of the road when it overheats.sitting on the shoulder of the l.a. Various problems with 2002 honda goldwing motorcycle.*mr consumer's wife burned the leg on the exhaust due to a poor location of the exhaust. She sustained 2nd degree burns. They decided to sell the bike for safety reasons. Other problems include: wobbly handlebar, the repeated cupping of the front tire, overheating, and the breaking of swing arm frames without notice. *ph

I echo the same concerns as many other gl1800 goldwing owners.i have experianced many problems with this motorcycle(failed radio system, failed saddle bag control cams,,,,,front tire deflation )but by far the most frustrating and flat out disappointing experience is a failed coolentsystem-(pegging past red line on several ocassions in traffic. Extreme overheating,fan problems)on this bike and honda's obviouse lack ofacceptance and concern for this potentially dangerouse problem to its gl1800 owners . Engine consistently overheats,dropping fluids. Fluid overflow is directly in front of rear tire, and coolant loss could cause loss of traction and loss of control of cycle. Motorcycle has overheated 4 times and lost coolant 4 times in 2k miles. Honda says it is not overheated until coolant is lost ( right in front of rear tire).

2002 honda gl 1800 gold wing motorcycle. Drive shaft rubber boot came apart and sliced into electrical harness which in turn shut down engine at highway speed on busy road and stranded my wife and i on side of road until help arrived. Vehicle had 8,700 miles at time of failure.

The contact owns a 2002 honda gl1800 (goldwing) motorcycle. While driving 25 mph, the rear brakes failed. The contact pulled over and had the bike towed to his residence. There were no warning indicators illuminated.an unknown dealer was notified, but was not able to assist. The contact repaired the rear master brake cylinder sub-assembly himself. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 186,000.

The rear braking system on the motorcycle has completely failed three times since april 18, 2009.when the rear brake pedal is depressed, it quickly sinks down, and the braking system does nothing to slow or stop the motorcycle.a honda dealership was first notified of problem on april 19, 2009.the master cylinder for the rear braking system was replaced under warranty, and the motorcycle was returned to me as 'repaired' on may 8, 2009.the rear braking system failed for the second time, 72 days after being 'repaired', on july 19, 2009 when i was 500 miles from home.the motorcycle was returned to same honda dealership for repair on july 21, 2009. I contacted american honda customer support about this issue on august 7, 2009, and a case was opened. A district service manager from honda worked with the honda dealership on this issue.the rear master cylinder was replaced for a second time, and a proportional control valve was also replaced.the motorcycle was again determined to be 'repaired', and was returned to me on august 21, 2009.the rear braking system failed for the third time, 45 days after being 'repaired', on october 5, 2009, this time while i was riding the motorcycle.american honda customer support, as well as the honda dealership, were notified of the third failure on october 6, 2009. I have requested of honda customer support that the honda district service manager be notified of this issue, and that he be involved again. American honda has requested that i return the motorcycle to the same honda dealership that worked on it the first two times.this is a safety concern, which could easily lead to a crash and injury.

Low speed wobble, defective steering head bearing, excessive front tire wear, un-steady braking.

Consumer had a honda goldwing,2002. When using the rear brakes it set up a bad grabbing vibration in the front of the motorcycle. Consumercontacted the manufacturer, who said there was nosolution for the current defect.everything in the front end has been replaced yet the problem persist.the customer service center explained that there was nothing more they could do.

Stuck in traffic ,stop and go for 30 min at low speed , brakes when applied suddendly chattered like abs would , speed was about 5 miles an hr, brake pedal was right to the top and hard , thru out day came and went , cooled down while parked was ok later till i went to park and started again ,off and on on ride home.

Front wheel wobble when reducing speed between 55 and 20 mph. Induced also by the use of cruise control when it decreases speed. Near loss of control when it happens unexpected. Much worse on rough surfaces. Dealer unable to repair under warrenty because factory will not pay as a authorized fix ????

I bought this motorcycle with 1530 miles on it, and the problem was occurring from the beginning.it continues and i feel it is a clear safety issue.the motorcycle front forks wobble when less than a firm grip is held on the handle bars.the wobble begins small, and left unchecked increases in intensity to where within about 20 seconds the motorcycle would become unstable and crash.

Consumer put 7 sets of tires on his motorcycle to eliminate the shake/shimmy in the steering but to no avail.*phnew bearings in the head shaft at 34,000 miles.shaking and shimmying occurs when accelerating or decelerating motorcycle.*la

The motorcycle steering failed while the driver was driving 35 mph on the highway. Driver was able to maintain control, and drove to the dealer.mechanic determined that the steering bearing needed to be replaced.

Gl1800 motorcycles have had frame failures while riding.*mr frame appears to fail all around the welds that hold the lower cross member around the bike.

2002 goldwing gl1800 broken frame on the bottom or the rear frame tubes can result in separation and the rear of the bike will come off including driver, passenger,saddlebags and rear trunk!honda will do nothing to fix it!if the damage goes unseen by a tech the owner will never know the frame is broken because it is not in hondas recall of the welded centerstand area.the replacement frames have gussettes welded in the affected areas, so honda knows there is a problem. Affected frames are in 2001-2004 honda gl1800 motorcycles and was updated in letter 2004 models!honda service rep virtualla says too bad!

My 2002 gl1800a has a cracked weld on the frame under the seat area and is not safe to ride.the motorcycle also overheats in slow traffic on warm days, causing me to have to pull over and let it cool down.

I have been made aware of several incidents of main frame failure on honda goldwing (gl1800's).to this point, all reports i've received have involved 2002 models.i'm working on getting more details and information, but am concerned because i own a 2003 model, and have seen/heard nothing about this - nor does your website indicate any such reports.i have photographs of the failed frame on one of the failures, and am working on obtaining further information and pictures of the other failures i've heard of (at least 4 to date).these have all be reported as low-speed, low-impact failures, and it concerns me greatly.i can email copies of the pictures if you'd like, and share whatever additional information you may want that i uncover.

I have a 2002 honda goldwing. It has a recall for a over heating problem and a frame breaking problem. I do not at all feel safe on this motorcycle or would i if someone were to weld on an aluminum frame. This frame breakage is more thanjust something that will leave you standing beside the road. Honda needs to be made to replace these bikes, not modify them. My frame is not broken but is under recall and i do not feel safe with or with out the fix. *la

Upon inspection, the rear frame tubes have cracked on both sides of my '02 honda gl1800 bike.the tubes have not completely separated yet, but the cracks extend about 1/3 around the tube beginning at the weld area.bike-handling irregularity has been reported by others with this failure when the cracks have opened further.

2002 honda goldwing gl1800 frame cracks. Found while servicing at home, the frame cracked on both lower sides near the rear suspension mount. Reported it to the dealer, they picked up the bike for inspection & warranty claim on sat 10/4. I am waiting to hear from honda on the matter.

Discovered frame crack on my 2002 honda gl 1800.the crack is located behind the left passenger foot rest and below the battery.the 2002 goldwing has 105,000 miles and is normally ridden two up.the bike has never been in an accident.the bike is currently at the honda dealer waiting for american honda to ok replacing the frame.

In the past month mulitple honda gl1800 frame breakages have occurred. The breakage causes the vehicle to drop down with the lowest protion contacting the ground and the rear wheel contacting the fender. If this were to happen while cornering, an accident is likely to occur. 7 breakages have been documented to date with vin numbers and photographs. Others have been mentioned, but are not verifiable at this time. Honda corp. Has been quietly replacing the motorcycles so the actual number of breakages could be much higher. I feel at this time that i can no longer trust the integrity of my motorcycle and instead will find another mode of transportation. Unfortunately, i spent 17000.00 on this bike a year ago and now it is merely a liability. I especially would not allow any riders which defeats the core design of this motorcycle as a two-up touring bike. I feel honda has known about this issue for some time and has chosen to try to cover it up, indicating the corporations contempt for honest and fair business practices.

2002 honda gl1800 motorcycle.the rear suspension adjustment motor does not engage until the number on the indicator display reaches 7 or 8.this means that there is no suspension lift until that point, (7 or 8), is reached.honda maintains the unit is working properly.if it were working properly the bike should begin rising when the display reads 1.i have read that there have been many complaints of this defect, but honda will not repair the item, i suspect because it is a costly repair, and obviously widespread.aiken motorcycle sales & service will not repair, saying that the suspension mechanism is within honda specs.

The contact owns a 2002 honda goldwing equipped with a 2015 rally wagon prl. While driving at approximately 60 mph, the axle for the trailer fractured and the tires detached. The trailer was taken to an independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed that the material used was defective. The trailer was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 3,000.

Since new i have complained about a wobbling when braking my gold wing. The various dealerships have stated time and again that "the problem was not evident". On january 3, 2003 i was riding my 2002 gl1800a at highway speed when i lightly applied my rear brake pedal to "check my speed" and the bike wobbled violently causing me to crash and subsequently cause almost $10,000 damage to my bike, as well as personal injury. The bike was "fixed" only to have the problem resurface several times. Honda has stated they "have no clue" as to how to repair the motorcycle.

Front wheel wobble when reducing speed between 55 and 20 mph. Induced also by the use of cruise control when it decreases speed. Near loss of control when it happens unexpected. Much worse on rough surfaces. Dealer unable to repair under warrenty because factory will not pay as a authorized fix ????

I echo the same concerns as many other gl1800 goldwing owners.i have experianced many problems with this motorcycle(failed radio system, failed saddle bag control cams,,,,,front tire deflation )but by far the most frustrating and flat out disappointing experience is a failed coolentsystem-(pegging past red line on several ocassions in traffic. Extreme overheating,fan problems)on this bike and honda's obviouse lack ofacceptance and concern for this potentially dangerouse problem to its gl1800 owners . The dealership and sevicepersonell are simply left with advising customers with no solution???? ....i am one voice of certainly many who have experianced engine coolent problems and i wish to expresse my sincere concern to you and who ever will listen, in the hope that a recall be forced.

I purchased a 2002 honda gl1800 goldwing.since then, the speedometer has read 10% faster than my actual speed.i brought this to the attention of my dealer and i got honda's standard answer of, 'it's within acceptable limits.'how far does a speedometer have to be off before it is unacceptable?*la

Throttle stuck open in the matter of full throttle very high rpms . Driver left the roadway . A grass and dirt shoulder in attempts to slow vehicle down causing 12 points of initial contact until vehicle and driver landed off roadway not entering a trafficway ahead . The contact owns a 2002 honda goldwing gl 1800.while driving at various speeds, the windshield does not adjust and locks in an upward position.the failure reduces the contacts visibility.the dealer repaired the body adjuster, cam b adjuster, cam a adjuster, cir-clip, and the holder adjuster; however, the failure recurred a year later.he took the vehicle back to the dealer and they stated that the cam b and cam a adjusters failed again and they disabled the center lock.the contact filed a formal complaint with the manufacturer.the engine size, number of cylinders, and powertrain were unknown.the failure mileage was 52,000 and current mileage was 62,000.updated 02-19-08 the consumer stated the windshield is designed to adjust up and down a few inches. The adjustment procedures "to lower: move the windshield up to the upper mark, lower it all the way, then raise to the desired position". The consumer stated the failure occurred when windshield moved to the upper mark and locked in that position. The first failure occurred at about 53,000 and the second was 61,000. Updated 02/19/08

Windshield has a rainbow effect, it's very difficult to see through. Dealer replaced windshield, andnew one was of the same design. Honda stated all windshields were designed this way.
