I purchased my 2001 goldwing 1800 used from a local dealer in plainfield, ct. The goldwing was sold to me with the stereo system installed which included the 5 disc cd changer under the rear trunk. From day 1 i had problems with this cd changer not working correctly, becoming jammed up with all 5discs in one slot, etc. I had taken out the extended warranty from the dealership but all they ever told me was that they were looking into the problem. They did provide me with a print out of all of the work done for the previous owner which also showed the same issue with the cd changer but they replaced it twice for him yet nothing was ever done to help with my problem except " we are looking into the problem." since then the dealership has folded and a new owner is running the place and of course they are not backing anything that the old dealership did or said ( can not blame them there though!) i was told by someone that therewas some kind of a recall on the cd changer which is made by pioneer, can someone please tell me how to get this fixed, repaired, replaced, anything??
Engine stop switch is overly sensitive.if motorcycle hits a bump the engine may shut off. If switch is touched it will stop engine.
While drivingfuse box will move around due toboxbeing attached with one screw. When moving motorcycle will stall untilbox is moved back to position.please provide more information.
Consumer states when vehicle is in stop and go traffic or in first or second gear, temperture gauge will be in the red zone, water temperture will be 265. Causing vehicle to overheat.nlm
Temperature guage moves to red zone and engine appears to overheat when traveling 12-17 mph.
Temperature gauge will climb if drove at speed's 10 to 15 mph if in a traffic jam cooling system does not work properly engine will heatup with possible over heating if rode slow for very long.
Coolant temperature went to red mark several times under slow moving conditions. Bike was stopped to cool it down. Safety concern.
During rush hour traffic my motorcycle's temperature guage began rising into the 'red' area after about 10 mins of 5-15 mph stop and go traffic - this is a well know issue on the www.gl1800riders.com general message board.
Occurred during trips up hill, behind slow traffic 20 mph or less, or in slow traffic in national parks, speed again less than 20 mph.temperature crept into the red or hot.vehicle had to be stopped and let cool down.
Temperature guage moves to red zone and engine appears to overheat when traveling 12-17 mph.
Engine overheats when riding in stop and go traffic at ambient temperatures at or above approx. 80 deg. Fahrenheit. Coolant may escape the recovery tank, and land on the road just ahead of the rear tire.dt
Engine overheats in slow traffic. Temp gauge goes into red zone, no cooland loss but coolant smell is strong, honda says there is no proplem
Coolant temperature went to red mark several times under slow moving conditions. Bike was stopped to cool it down. Safety concern.
Design of cooling system is that fans pull air through radiators. Fans designed to turn of at speeds over 15 mph. When you encounter stop and go traffic at speeds above 15 but less than 25,motorcycle will overheat. When i discussed this with the dealer & manufacturer i was told thisisn't an issue just don't drive in those condidtions. I was also asked if it got hot enough to spit out antu-freeze. I stated no, i didn't want to damage the engine and becaue of their design if it did spill out anti-freeze it comes out in front of the rear tire which could cause an accident. Not too safe. The fix is to reverse the dirrection of the fans and change the operation to where the fans come on and stay on at a certain tempature until the engine falls below that tempaturer. So far the manufacture refuses to acknowledge this is a safety issue.
During slow speed operation the motorcycle overheats this condition has been reported to my purchasing dealer several times and no remedy has been provided.
While this failure never caused the vehicle to stop completely, honda does not recognize the overheating as a problem. This has occurred to me and many other gl1800 owners. It is a problem in the basic design which creates a terrible condition when it occurs in stop and go traffic.honda needs to address it before it causes injury or death, not after.it may not seem to be the biggest problem, but it does exists and should be resolved by honda.
Motorcycle has gone into the "red zone" on the gauge numerous times since the first time that i expereinced it last summer. It definitely is getting hot, as the heat is noticeable and the motorcyc will also "miss shifts" while running hot. Originally it only occured when i would get trapped in traffic and was unable to either stop or go fast enough to cool down the motorcycle. It has progressed and i have experienced it under other conditions, such as climbing the hill to cave of the winds in colorado springs and on a grade at 40 - 50 mph sustained speed in utah. Once motorcycle has cooled down the shifting returns to normal, but the missed shifting seems to be getting more and more pronounced when hot. (or maybe the bike is getting hotter.) i asked my dealer about this situation last summer and at that time they said they had no previous reports of this occuring. I have not "puked coolant" that i know of, but since the bike does have an overflow reservoir i am not sure that it has not occured. I also have not stopped or watched the highway behind me as this was occuring. I was able to get a picture of the bike near the red zone at about 45 mph, but i was not able to get any at the red zone at that speed because the day that i tried was also one of the days that my speedometer was sticking. Since the bike was showing 50 mph while stoppped - according to the speedo - it seemed pointless to try to take a picture. I have never tried to get the bike to oh, a my desire is (was?) to own this bike for many years and many miles. I am very disappointed that honda refuses to acknowlegde the problem. The survey asked me if i contacted honda and i answered yes. The reality is that i tried last summer and got tired of waiting on the phone - so i did contact honda, but never actually spoke to a human being. There have been numerous reports of this occuring to other owners, so i have not tried again. I did fill out a report on this site last summer, but i do not see it posted.

Motorcycle overheats in slow traffic conditions caused by a design flaw.potential safety hazzard from coolant being expelled in front of the rear tire.
Motorcycle has a overheating problem at slow 15 to 25 mph.i have lost coolant .my main concern is for my passenger and my safety. I ride in los angles traffic and sometimes can't get to the side of the road.and when moving slow in traffic u can't be looking down to c if it puking coolant on the ground .this is one safety issue the other is the safety of trying to get off to the side of the road safely when there are four lanes of bumper to bumper traffic.i'm very disappointed with honda untimely manner of taking care of this safety issue.

Coolant dump happened after short ride on cool morning. Gauge does not go above the half mark now even in high temperature conditions. Dealer did not perform service for new harness. Indicated that was not required. Indicated that has not heard of this happening before.

This vehicle has a long history of heating temperatures that go into the red on temp gauge frequently. Two times the motorcycle heated to a temperature that causedthe cooling system to loose coolant and to cause a very dangerous slick condition at the real tire. I have spoken with several dealers and a honda rep in ca. They all seem to quietly acknowledge that a problem exists but refuse to recommend a repair or fix for this real problem. In my opinion, it is going to take a fatal accident or severalpersonal injury lawsuits before honda accepts responsibility. The problem is real, and wide spread. The fix is distant and not on the horizon. Please do something before someone gets burned or worse yet killed.dt
Engine overheats at slow speeds in any gear.this causes vehicle to have to be pulled over in heavy traffic which could result in injury. Mr

While driving my 2001 honda goldwing in city traffic proceeding at approx. 15-20 mph the temperature gauge on the cooling system goes into the red zone, indicating it is too hot. The bike has to be stopped and allowed to cool down, to proceed. This has happened approx. 4 times since i have owned the bike and all under the same traffic conditions. Coolant fluid level has been checked and is okay, the cooling fans do come on under 15 mph only. I have been to four honda motorcycle dealers and been told, there is no problem with the cooling system and to just drive it. Nlm
Motorcycle overheats when stuck in stop and go traffic, reported to dealer service dept. And was told that honda said this was not a problem.
Under slow traffic conditions the vehicle will overheat and has happened to many owners of this vehicle.it is reproducable on any motorcycle of this model.
1-motorcycle engines reaches extreme temps. When conditions are:road construction, accident, assembly/activity gathering or rush hour traffic limits traffic speed to between 0 and 20 mph. With frequent change in speed and few full stops. The radiator fans do activate, but are unable to maintain a 'safe" operating temp as indicated by the engine temp. Gauge going fully into the red and large amount of radiant heat being felt by the operator. This condition causes the operator to seek a safe place to pull off the roadway, sometimes on interstate highways. Thereby cutting across other lanes of traffic and becoming potentially to unlawful "shoulder riders" (this has occured resulting in a near miss while "cooling down" on the shoulder of i-287 in northern new jersey enroute home from lake george, ny from americade 2001) honda dealer was advised of this and two additional incidents, they don't know how to fix the problem. Speedometer:has stuck at 45mph on two occasions when i was traveling a both lessor and greater speeds. On both occasions the ambient air temps were high, in the mid 90's.complaint was filed with cooper's honda service manager. His reply was bring the bike in with the speedometer stuck and we'll look at it".speedometer has not yet stuck long enough for me to show the dealer i am truthful !dt

Honda gold wing overheated at low speeds.
Many honda goldwing gl 1800 owners have expressed concern about their motorcyles overheating while inching along in traffic and/or being in situations where low speeds are necessary, such as parades.it appears that the engine cooling fans/system is not designedto ride this bike in all driving situations safely without the possiblility of overheating and causing injury.
Engine overheats at low speed in second and third gear, causing operator to have to disrupt traffic and pull off to the side of the highway.also coolant is dispersed from the cooling system overflow.
Honda goldwing overheats in stop and go traffic less than 15 mph, regardless of the weather conditions, the motorcycle traveling at just 10-15 mph will begin to overheat. On two occasions within the last year, the temperture gage went all the way to the red zone , fearing engine damage, i pulled over until bike cooled down. I got off the freeway and drove surface streets until freeway traffic resumed an acceptable speed.
Vehicle overheated, in slow traffic, doing damage to o2 sensors, resulting in reduced gas mileage of 26 - 32 mpg, which is 10 - 12 mpg below original mileage and other gl1800's i ride with.dealer and manufacturer both know of the problem, but will not replace the o2 sensors unless the fi light on the dash comes on.fuel mileage should be a concern to motorcycle mfrs. Just as it is with cars.now i get mileage that is near what my 3200 lb., v6, 200hp sedan does and honda thinks this is ok?

Initial encounter of problem when for first time placed in heavy stop and go traffic on 8/16/2001. Has repeatedly failed approx 10 times since. Honda has been given three attempts to fix with no positive results. Engine has stalled on numerous events. Rear wheel seizing once while moving at about 22 mph. Boilover of coolant on several occasions also, coolant dumps right in front of rear wheel creating a possible loss of control. Known "tech fact" as per honda factory service manual, cooling fans will never ever come on above 15 mph regardless of temp.seeking legal recourse under magnuson moss warranty act.
This is a manufacturer's defect. The cooling fans are designed to stop functioning at speeds in excess of 15 mph. When i ride in stop and go traffic, or slow traffic.this motorcycle is certain to overheat (temperature gauge is in the red section). I must pull to the side of the road to allow the fans to come on and cool the motorcycle down obviously this is a dangerous situation.dt
Coolingfans are designed to cut off at 15 mph no matter what the engine temp is this can get real serious when on a 3 or 4 laneroad in heavy trafic and you have to pull over because the computer cut off the fansthis was brought to honda attention with not responce i listed the selling dealer but he is not the one doing the serviceed.
Initial problem discovered when first time placed in heavy slow moving traffic on 8/16/01. Has happened 8 times since first event. Manuf was informed within 5 mins of first occurence by cell phone. Dealer attempted to fix with failed results bike kept 1 week. At my request and constant complaining, regional rep then attempted kept bike 3 weeks. Faulty thermostat found and replaced, but problem still exists. Engine will run into and above red zone on guage, has on a few occasions dumped coolant, has shut off 3 times, entire drive train stopped moving once, possible engine seizure.honda and its reps now know nothing else to do.note* tech data that is fact not a defect* cooling fans will not run at any speed above 15mph regardless of how hot the engine may get. Problem still exists as of 10/19/01. Persuing legal advice and recourse as i feel my product has been damaged and i am not satified with outcome of how the manufacturer is handling the matter.
Recall 01v162000 on engine stop switch. Consumer made appointment at dealer on 24 may 2001, dropped vehicle off on 11 june. Then, called on 12 june 2001 to ask if vehicle was ready for pick up. At that time, dealer informed him recall would not be done because vehicle was not purchased at dealership.
Consumer was notified about recall 01v133000/pulse rotor in early may 2001. Contacted dealer , gn gonzales in baton rouge, la, and was told parts were on backorder. Since then, consumer has been in contact with dealer and honda co., still being told parts on backorder.
Recall 01v133000.consumer madeappointment to have recall done. Dropped vehicle off on 11 june 2001. Called dealer on 12 june 2001 to inquire if vehicle was ready to be picked up, was told recall would not be done because vehicle was not purchased at this dealership.
Overheat/spewing of coolant on rear brakes and rear tire of my gl 1800/a honda motorcycle. Situation was on the washington dc beltway, no shoulder to pull over onto, stop and go traffic. Motorcycle was spewing coolant on the the brakes and rear wheel, causing a very hot steam to rise on our legs and lower torso, also causing the rear wheel & brakes to become extremely slippery, as well as uncontrollable under existing traffic conditions. Honda has not fullfilled it's promis to repair these motorcycles as of yet!

While driving at an unknown speed, the engine stalled unexpectedly and it coasted before coming to a stop, dealership has not examined motorcycle for this problem, the dealership serviced motorcycle prior to the incident for an over-sensitive "engine stop switch.".

The problem is that the bike overheats beyond red line & loss of coolant occures when the bike is operated b/t 15& 25 mph for a period of 5 min. Or more in heavy traffic or other reason. The loss ofcoolantoccurs at the front of bike which means the wheel will likely pass thru which is unsafe. Also it is potentially damaging to the engine. Have discussed the problem with my servicing dealer and they state that honda doesn't admit the problem exists.the apparent cause of the problem is that the cooling fans are designed to go off at 15 mph regardless of engine temp. & the bike is not movingfast enough to cool by natural air flow. The problem is big enough that a class action suit is being started. Thank you for any help you can bring forth. Gordondt
Consumer states there is a constant phosphorous smell when riding at sustained speeds for extended periods.
This bike does not seem to pass emmissions as stated by the honda of america. They have refused to have it checked, or serviced.
Dt*: the contact stated while traveling 40 mph, the motorcycle stalled suddenly without warning.the dealership determined the fuel injector failed which caused the fuel pump to shut down automatically.the dealership informed the contact an fi light was supposed to illuminate on the motorcycle prior to failure of the fuel injector; however the contact did not notice a light illuminated.
While waiting at a stop sign or light speedometer would become stuck at a certain speed, even if motorcycle was not moving or doing that particular speed. Would suddenly jump back to normal speed. Contacted dealer, and was informed parts for speedometer were on back order. Another dealership indicated that manufacturer was trying to fix speedometer.consumer states the speedometer has been replaced, however had been limited due to lack of parts from honda.
Speedometer sticks/freezes, wont register speed. Notified dealer of failure, still no response on corrective actions.

On 06/26/2021, approx 4pm. Traffic heavy. Speed 20 mph or less. This caused consistent brake use. Rear brakes locked up. I was very close to the right edge of the road and bike stopped. I quickly activated emergency flashers and avoided any incident. This bike has abs. There was a service recall performed about 4 yrs ago- at barneys mc shop, st petersburg- related to brakes. I was able to shut off the bike twice. Pumped/tapped fr/r brakes twice and the brakes finally released. No further incident. Will have bike inspected tomorrow. No warning lamps. This bike has very low mileage at 21,000.
I bought a 1800 honda goldwing touring bike 2-3 years ago had a brake recall and still do? mine was worked on twice? after i bought i drove it 54 miles the rear wheel locked up pulling me in the ditch? flipping the bike and sending it end over end total? that was all don,t before i got out of the er and hospitol....updated 06/21/17 the consumer stated the vehicle was totaled and sold.updated 08/04/2017
Had brake recall work done at honda dealership. After that & has temp got hotter i developed a extremely violent brake shutter.returned it to the dealership. They notified honda and attempted to rework the brakes but did not fix the problem. I did some research on the internet goldwing brake shuddering & found out i was not the only one having this problem & honda is aware of it.called honda cs told them what it was doing. They inform me if i read my owner manual on brake operations that it's operator error .i have owned this bike since it was new. It does not matter what brake combination you use front/rear /simultaneously it creates the shutter. This starts when the temp gets above 80 degrees it does not matter slow or high speeds in curves or turning a corner or onto a parking lot you have to release the brake to get it to stop. This problem did not start until after the recall work was done.there is still some kind of brake problem with the goldwing gl 1800. I guess it will take someone getting killed before honda does something about. I wish you'd do some research on the brake shuttering. Just look up goldwing brake shutter it started 2002 and goes to 2015. I don't know if anyone else has filed a complaint?

The speedometer quits working randomly and at different speeds. Honda knows about this problem but has failed to repair it. This is a dangerous situation as far as i'm concerned when you can't accurately tell how fast you are going.i've been waiting for them to fix it for over ten months and am still waiting. I'd really hate to get a speeding ticket because of a faulty speedometer.
On my 2001 honda goldwing gl1800 my frame is cracked on the left side above the passenger footrest. This crack was found today sept.22 2008. I was told to go ahead and report this problem with your department. I will be contacting american honda as soon as i go to my dealer and let them inspect my motorcycle. I do not want my frame patched up. This is an ongoing problem that honda is aware of on all of their 2001 through 2004 honda goldwings. The only repair is a frame replacement with an updated frame. This repair should be covered under warranty, even though the vehicle is out of warranty. This vehicle had a frame recall in 2002 which honda did a patch repair reweld on the underneath crossmember.
I've been keeping a close eye on the frame issues since i have an early '01 standard. During the one recall the dealer found that the welds were too small and had them repaired per the service bulletin. Then later they found a crack on the left crossmember above the battery where we've seen others cracked. The dealer checked with honda to see if they would replace the frame and honda said no. The dealer did repair the frame by welding and sprayed silver paint over the repair under warranty. Now three years later and out of both the original and extended warranties i found another crack. This one extends from the weld aft of left side rear floor board. It is just starting to grow with several cracks extending aft about an inch. There are actually two cracks extending from the weld on the subframe. I have contacted the local dealer and honda customer service with no comment from either.
Motorcycle, honda goldwing, 2001 left frame crack:there have been numerous instances of frames being cracked and upon inspection of my motorcycle frame i noticed that i have the identical crack in my frame. The crack is located adjacent to the left passenger footrest and is visible by removing the rear tire and viewing it from under the bike. The crack extends down from a weld that attaches the lower left rear support tube to the center section of the frame.

The vehicle is a 2001 honda gl1800 motorcycle with 56300 miles. Vehicle was recalled for possible weld defects in the frame several years ago.vehicle passed inspection.no weld defects or cracks were found at that time.upon doing cleaning and maintenance on the vehicle over the past 10 days i discovered a crack in a frame weld.the crack is located in the middle of a weld and extends approximately 1.5 inches.the crack is at the junction of a tubular protrubance off the main frame and tubular support for the motorcycle seat. The aluminum tubular support is on the left side of the motorcycle.i have notified american honda in california.the motorcycle is at the fox valley honda dealership in aurora, illinois. Fox valley honda is notifying the district manager who will evaluate the frame problem.
Frame tubbing fracture in the rear triangle of the main frame on the edge of a weld.note that this is a known failure point on this model of honda goldwing which occurs in the tubing at the edge of the weld to a frame casting.no repair is recomended on this 7003 type of aluminum when the failure is outside of the weld

Consumer states motorcycle wobbles and vibrates between speeds of 40-50 mph. Dealer aligned handlebars, replaced and balanced tires, aligned front forks and replaced steering head bearings, but vibrations still exist. Bike under warranty.
Front brake antilocked up. When hitting a severe bump in the road, not a pothole, the left fork seal blew outward, releasing a massive amout of suspension oil covering the left front of the bike including saturating the left front brake pads and rotors.i replaced the failed seal with a new one and examined the anti dive valve for operation. It operated normaly at that time, but on further examanation at a later date was found to again be locked up, and at that time i replaces the deffective plunger mechanism on the top of the anti dive unit that operates it with front brake pressure. Not sure of the exact dates. Initial failure was in late 2003, and the second was in late 2004.
Motorcylcle has a speed wobble, which is unastable at approximately at 40 mph, the dealer says that front tire was the possible cause, consumer does not believe that it is the tire causing the problem, and if it is it should be replaced under warranty, but the warranty was refused by manufacturer.
There is an air leak between the tire and rim along the tire bead.the tire leaks 3 psi in an 8 hour period.the leak occurs in along a line approximately 1/2 way around the wheel on one side and in two places on the other side of the rim. (dot number: enb9tiresize: 180/60r16)
The tire has severe wear (cupping). This wear is occurring after only 5000 miles. After i reported the problem in december, honda has made a policy of not replacing tires for premature wear. This condition causes poor handling.
Within the first 3000 miles abnormal tire wear started showing up, now at 5000 miles the tire is cupped to where it causes safety problems with handling. I don't think a tire should be worn and causing wobbles at so low of a mileage. I am seeing this on all the new 2001 goldwings that i see and talk to the owners. (tiresize: 130/70r18)
Front tire is cupping, and hasflat spots all overthat is causing vibration whenvehicle is being driven. Consumer has contactedmanufacturer. Tire only has 6000 miles on it.
Front tire on this motorcycle is severely cupped.i have contacted the manufacturer and received nothing but double talk.this tire is the origial equipment on a near-$20k motorcycle.to date there are no other manufacturers of this specific tire size for this motorcycle.at speeds below 30 mph the front end shakes/wobbles creating what i feel is an unsafe condition.both honda and bridgestone/firestone are aware of the problem.nearly every owner of this new motorcycle has been affected by this problem.the manufacturer is telling me to inflate the tires to a higher pressure than my owner's manual states.i don't have a problem with this except for the fact that the damage has already been done.over inflation will not correct the problem.i have an email response from bridgestone/firestone if you would like me to forward it.thank you. Motorcycle wobbled at 40 mph when decelerating.also, problemwith tires.had not contacted dealer.
The front tire cups severely by 3500 to 4000miles.my air pressure is checked very oftenand is kept between 38 & 40 lbs cold. If you check gl1800 web sites you will find lots of discussion about this problem and the front end wobble this causes. Honda denies there is a problem and says 4000 miles is acceptable mileage.the tires will wear longer than 4000 miles but are unstable. I have replaced my tires 3 times and they all have severe cupping by 3500 miles. Looking at other 2001 goldwings i have yet to see one that did not have a cupped front tire.(tiresize: 130/70 r18)

Front tire on motorcycle developed cupping condition at 3000miles. Operating pressures always maintained at 40psi. Honda's reply (without checking the tire) was "nothing defective with tire--no replacement is authorized". Cupping on a motorcycle can lead to serious handling condition resulting in accident. Honda should be responsible for correction of (design) problem. Other riders contacted reported similair problem with same model motorcycle and tire.
This motorcycle radial tire has developed "squirm" ( the front end wobbles left/right) as though the radial plies have separated. I have not experienced this on any vehicle since the very first radials appeared on cars. I previously had radial michelins on another machine and had no such experience. Can you help?
On 3/27/17 during routine maintenance and cleaning in my garage, i removed the side covers and found the frame was broken completely apart on both sides of the motorcycle.frame brake was in the lower tube section of the rear triangle of main frame directly aft of the weld.this is a known weak spot, since honda reinforced this area of the aluminum frame in mid-2004.this break was reported to honda powersports customer service in torrance, ca on 3/28/17.had the broken frame inspected and photographed by authorized honda service manager 3/31/17.now waiting to hear from honda.
The factory set idle speed of approximately 700 rpm is too slow resulting in the motorcycle slowing down when the clutch is let out instead of maintaining or increasing speed, this condition has resulted in the driver severely pulling shoulder muscles while trying to hold the bike up.nlm
While driving at 65 mph something let go inengine, causingrear wheel andbrakes to malfunction.dealer wasinspecting vehicle.also, the clutch plate clip and ring seal failed causing smoke from tail pipes.
The motorcycle developed a knocking in the drive. The dealer , after contacting honda, said it was the rear brake rotor and not covered under warranty. I checked it myself and found all of the lug nuts loose on the rear wheel. From the difference in handling, and the fact the rear wheel has never been off the motorcycle, i'd guess it's been loose since i bought it new.
