I was the driver of a honda element that was rear ended while i was stationary waiting to make a left turn into my driveway. The impact from the other car had broken the drivers seat and repositioned my head just a few inches from the floor and by then the spare tire securing mechanism had broken and the spare tire flew forward hitting me in the head and eventually coming to a rest in the passengers seat. With the back impact from the other car and then the front impact hitting the trees along side of the road did not release the airbags when the other car that hit the element had its airbags deployed.

There were no warning indicators illuminated prior to the collision. The contact sustained minor injuries, which required medical attention. A police report was filed. Air bags: recall 2005 honda element, announced: june 20 2014honda: a message to our customers about takata airbags 10/28/2014revised 02/11/2015on tuesday, april 28, 2015, nhtsa convened a one-day workshop. Appearing on behalf of honda was [xxx] smith, senior vice president, parts, service and technical division. Following is smith'??s statement.getting to 100% recall completion rates: incentives and innovative ideas"due to the size of the campaigns to replace takata inflators, we also worked to increase the supply of replacement parts, and succeeded in securing three additional suppliers -- trw, [xxx] and autoliv -- that are now supplying us with inflators. This will help accelerate the pace of repairs in the coming months."i received my recall notice in april 2015. The dealership set an appointment 3 weeks later, may 4, 2015. I received three emails, and one voicemail, to remind me of the appointment. 43 minutes after i brought the car, the dealer told me that they did not have the new airbag. I got them to provide me with a rental car. They offered no time-frame for when the part will arrive or when i will get my element back.[xxx], how can you get to 100% recall completion rates if you cannot provide the replacement part?to quote you from the above statement, "completion rates of about 33 percent in the 9th and 10th year of ownership. To amplify this point, let me explain that we have enlisted a special investigative firm as part of our effort to contact hard-to-reach owners of older model vehicles affected by the takata airbag inflator recall. On a number of occasions, the investigators succeeded in locating the owner, but despite best efforts to persuade them, the customer refused to bring in their car for repair."i brought you my car seven months after the start of recall. Now what?information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

I was driving around 12:15 in am, a vehicle from right came out of street and i could not avoid hitting the car. My honda hit the car, described as a t bone hit. I had no passengers, and was wearing seat belt. My passenger side front air bag activated, my driver side air bag did not activate. My honda car had severe damage on the left driver side, less on the right side. My head light was gone from the left side and right side was intact. My car was totaled as a loss by insurance company. The sensor located on my driver side did not react to deploy the air bag. The frame bar was bent and damage right next to the sensor. I received neck bruises, swelling and neck pain. My knee was cut and swollen. There are significant breaks in the plastic on both sides of the interior steering column, proving the intense of the force of the hit. The car was towed to an independent repair shop.my questions were not answered by honda as to why my driver side air bag did not employ. I spoke to honda customer service, with no satisfactory results. Thank you, with much appreciation.
My 2005 honda element constantly display airbag off, when it's inaccurate, dashboard light doesn't work. There's some kind of shortage because it blinks, come on and go off and stay off. It shows the same information, rather driving or stationary.are there recalls on this car? it's been one problem after another.

My honda 2005 element's side air bag inadvertently deployed. I was exiting a parking lot and partially drove over a curb with the left front tire. As the tire rolled off the curb the driver's side air bag deployed. I heard a loud explosion sound and was completely freaked out.i looked to my left side and the driver side airbag had exploded out. It wasn't even inflated. Fortunately, i was not injured.

Airbag light illuminated, reset and checked codes. It is telling me that the drivers airbag is faulty. The car was not involved in an accident.
Dt*: the contact stated while driving 2 mph over a speed bump through a parking lot in the rain, the front passenger side curtain airbag deployed from within the seat without warning.the passenger was not wearing a seat belt, and sustained minor injuries.the vehicle was inspected by a dealer who determined the airbag deployed due to impact of one of the airbag sensors underneath the vehicle.the manufacturer was notified.
Repeated (7 shop visits) attempts to resolve srs (airbag) indicator activating.two seat belt clasp replacements, i can recall.honda refuses to honor vehicle occupant safety warranty to remedy repeated faults tied possibly to defective seat belt harness wiring estimated to cost $400-$1,100.
I do not have this vehicle any longer. It was totalled in 2015 and sold to a salvage company in janesville, wisconsin. I have tried many, many times to report this to various entities in variety of ways, but i keep getting notices. It has been 4 years, and i keep getting these letters/notices.i was told that there was nothing that i can do about it. Stop the mailings, i no longer own the vehicle.
I swerved to avoid hitting a car and hit an embankment.my car lifted off the ground and rolled 3 times.i got the element because it had very high safety ratings.it also had side airbags which i found especially important for an suv however none of them deployed.
We brought our 2005 element into the dealer on nov 3d in ukiah cal for replacement of the airbags per the recall of october 28th, 2014.the dealer replaced the driver takata airbag but told us the passenger airbag was not made by takata and therefore they would not replace it under the recall, but would charge us.i entered the vin in the honda recall web site. It did gave no information on line about the recall but told me to call them at 800 999 1009.was a recall issued on the 28th of oct that also applies to the passenger side?
Air bag indicator ligjht came on when i started car.
The car slipped on ice and hit an embankment head on and the airbags did not deploy.

While waiting for over 9 months for the parts for my airbag to be fixed, the airbag light came on. I was told by honda this would be fixed when the airbag was replaced. The dealer told me the light sensor was a separate issue and not covered under warranty.i do not have $800 dollars to fix this issue. I was told the airbag will not work as long as the light is on.what was the point in fixing my airbag if it does not work anyways. Is this not a safety issue?

I was driving into the bank drive in teller and my left side airbag went off.
Air bag replaced around aug. 1, 2016. I believe the air bag was not installed properly as it rattles inside the dashboard. Rattles while in motion.
Driving down a straight major hi way, moving 60 mph, driver seat airbag deploys for no reason. Vehicle was not involved in accident, hit anything in road, orhave any other vehicles near. Loud bang occurred with airbag hitting left arm. Vehicle went to honda dealership next day, diagnosed from computer as air bag deployed to unknown reason an replacement of airbag an control panel need replacement at owners expense. Auto insurance will be notified as soon as possible, memorial day weekend closed.
Airbag warning lights will come on for no reason saying passenger airbag is off and it is not off. This happens at least once a week. This happens at various times, cranking vehicle, driving vehicle, there is really no specific situation . It's sporadic.headlights have always been dim. Sometimes i can't even tell if they are on.the cargo lights, front middle and back work sometimes and most times they don't. Also brake lights seem to have a mind of there own and work when they want to but definitely not when i want them to.in fact i am pretty sure there is an electrical shortage somewhere.
My son rolled our 2005 honda element in a relatively low speed crash, about 30 mph. Although the roof was smashed in and windshield broken, the airbags did not deploy. Luckily he was wearing a seatbelt and escaped harm, but it seems like in a wreck in which the car ended up resting on its roof, that the side curtain airbags should have deployed.
While i was turning into a parking lot i cut the turn too short and went over the curb. The airbag deployed. No damage. I didn't hit anything. Just went over the curb and the airbag deployed. I think this is a defect. This should be a recall item. I don't feel the airbag should deploy just for going over a curb. My arm was injured. Something needs to be done about this. I sent it to the dealer for repair and they said i was in an accident. Of course i knew they wouldn't say it's a common problem that the airbag deploys for no good reason.

While driving through parking lot approaching exit, the passenger side seat airbag deployed without reason. Loud bang, ringing ears, and crying kids. No bumps, potholes, curbs or accident. So far everyone from honda, the dealer and insurance are allpointing the finger at each other. As seen on this and other sites this seems common however everyone acts like it's the first time they've heard of such a thing.
My passenger side airbag deployed while the car was not moving. This is the airbag that located on the side of the seat.

My daughter was driving her 2005 honda element around 50mph and hit a small pot hole and then heard a loud bang.after seeing smoke she immediately pulled over and checked the car and found no outside damage.when getting back in still seen and smelled smoke and noticed passenger front airbag was deployed.how does an airbag deploy without a front or side impact?

Takata recallhello, after taking my vehicle for the takata recall for the third time on 9/3.the srs sensor light came on and it is still on.honda refuses to take a look at the vehicle without charging me first.my main concern is how do i know if the airbags are fully functional after honda fixed the recall and now the srs light is on.honda also refuses to test the vehicle to make sure airbags and seat belts are fully functional.
I was driving my honda element down a fairly busy street at 45 miles an hour. A man pulled out of a strip mall parking lot right in front of me. Although i honked my horn and slammed on the brakes, i could not avoid hitting him. My car has extreme front end damage and it was a high impact crash, however the air bags did not deploy. I am still waiting to hear if it will be determined to be totaled, but if it isn't, i do not feel safe driving this car in the future.
I received a recall notice from honda ,nhtsa recall 16v-344. Dated june 2016i called hendrick honda in bradenton, florida , i was told they have no information on the recall nor the parts to repair the car.
2005 honda element's air bag inadvertently deployed.*ccthe consumer was exiting a parking lot and partially drove over a curb with the right front tire.as the tire rolled off the curb the passenger's side air bag deployed.there were no injuries.the consumer drove the vehicle tot he closest honda dealer.after running the diagnostic test the technician informed the consumer that the air bags should not have deployed.the vehicle was taken back to the sales dealer who claimed that when the vehicle whet over the curd, the vehicle scraped the bracket for the step rail, which activated the sensor and the air bag,.the dealer denied any responsibility.
Driver seat belt buckle switch for srs air bag system shuts off srs system - red warning light comes on.this has happened several times after resetting, system may work okay for several weeks.repair shop says common problem seen may times .cost to fix $350+.
The air bag stays on even after a the left air bag assembly replaced. There is a loud knocking front end which is worse when it is going about 15-30 miles.
The srs light came on. I've determined the cause for the light is a defective clock-spring. This is a safety defect and should be covered by honda.
2005 honda element. Consumer writes in regards to air bag indicator light illuminating. The dealer informed the consumer, she would have to pay a $100 diagnostic test fee. In addition to that charge, she was informed there could be an additional fee to fix the problem after diagnosing it.
Started with pass. Air bag light & pass. Seatbelt beeper & light. Have had it repaired 4 times but pass. Beeper & light has not been fixed. Spoke with honda america in ca regional mgr morris said it doesn't exist in the2005 honda element the manual is a misprint. This is a safety issue which honda does not want to correct. It had worked before so my wife & i spoke to people with 1996 to 2008 honda elements and they all have a seatbelt light & beeper for the passenger front seat. Could you please help with this safety issue that has been going on for four long years. I believe honda america is trying to deceive us. I even asked morris to put it in writing that it is a misprint in the manual but he said he could not do that. I also told him that i had spoken to other 2005 element owners who stated their passenger seatbelts have a light & beeper but still insists that my car does not.
I rolled my 2005 honda element (2x drive) on i-95 at least four times according to fhp.my front airbag did not deploy, although my windshield was crushed in.and my drivers' side airbag deployed only partially (1/4).i was extracted from the vehicle and life-flighted to shand's emergency room in jacksonville, florida.i suffered multiple contusions; internal bleeding and severely fractured sternum.had my drivers side airbag deployed, i probably would have been spared much of this trauma.i have thoroughly documented with pictures to support my claim, and my insurance adjuster also confirms this. I am awaiting the florida highway patrol's report.
Accident involving a 2005 honda element. A front end crash when another vehicle ran a stop sign and we hit the vehicle in the drivers side causing major damage to both vehicles. Our honda element sustained front end damage approximate speed 30mph. The airbag on the element did not deploy. Have you had any other complaints on element airbags not deploying? we only sustained minor injuries.
Airbag self check light never lit in the time that we had car. Driver only- with seatbelt. Car hit pole with l front causing approximately $10k damage to car. Right airbag deployed, left did not. Sensors and control module replaced by body shop during damage repair. Concerned that if there is another more serious accident, same thing will happen.
The contact owns a 2005 honda element. While driving at 62 mph with the cruise control activated, the front driver side air bag suddenly deployed. The air bag did not inflate when it deployed. The vehicle was towed to a repair shop. The current and failure mileages were approximately 60,300.
A week ago i was in a parking lot going 5-7 mph i had to swerve to the left to avoid a collision and when i did my left front tire hit a cement pole at which time my steering wheel air bag and passenger (i had 0 passengers) air bag deployed.i didn't know what happened.i had my seat belt on and it threw me towards the passenger seat causing back pain and it burned my arm so bad it was bleeding.it is in the shop right now getting the front end fixed and the air bags are costing $1500.00 to repair.i contacted the dealer the next day and i have not heard back from them.i wanted to know what kind of an impact would make the air bags deploy.
We purchased a new 2005 honda element ex 4wd and after driving it for only 200 miles, the srs airbag warning light came on indicating that the system was malfunctioning.when we took the car to the dealer, we were told that honda knows that when a cell phone or laptop is placed on the passenger seat this triggers the malfunction.we were then told by the service manager at poway honda, in poway, ca that this information was in the owner's manual, which it is not.they also did not know if this led to air bag malfunction.they only reset the sensor.when confronted about being told that this was in the manual, the manager of the dealership hung up on me.
The contact owns a 2005 honda element.the contact stated that the air bag srs light remains illuminated.the dealer stated that the vehicle is not under warranty and could not perform the repair.the contact stated that the entire system has failed.the engine size was unknown.the current mileage is 43,705 and failure mileage was 43,605.
I was driving my 2005 honda element on a smooth gravel road around 25mph when the drivers-sideairbag in the chair deployed bruising the back of my left arm. It deployed fully and tore my seat. My vehicle is no longer under warranty, but i feel this could be a safety hazard if i was driving down the highway and something like this happened and could easily cause a serious accident. I would like to see honda acknowledge that they have a problem with the airbag system and take responsibility in fixing it, as i stand now i have to replace my airbag, airbag ecu, and have my seat repaired.
My wife, mother in-law, and 8 month old son were driving on a gravel driveway to someones house when suddenly the drivers side airbag in my 2005 honda element deployed.there was no collision, no reckless driving, nothing to provoke an airbag to suddenly deploy.it only happened once, however, due to fighting w/ dealerships and honda's customer service center over the repairs; my wife is still driving the vehicle, as it is her only means of transportation.my 8 month old son also rides in this vehicle and i am very thankful that he and my wife were not hurt in the incident; my mother in-law however, received a severely bruised elbow as she was the one driving the vehicle. I took it to the dealership to have it repaired and was told that only the faulty sensor is covered under my warranty.they will not pay for replacement of the physical airbag, they will not pay to have the seat stitched back together were the airbag deployed from, and they will not pay to reset all of the other airbag sensors that apparently no longer work.it has been over a month since this occurred and the best advice honda has given me is to have my insurance company inspect the vehicle-pay for the repairs-and then contact honda for reimbursement.this is an outrage-my insurance company should have nothing to do with this-as there was no collision.my warranty should pay for this repair in full.i am so very thankful that my family was on a gravel road traveling under 10mph.it horrifies me to think of what would have happened if this occurred on the freeway-at freeway speeds.i feel that if something is not done to correct this problem-that someone will be seriously hurt or killed.honda needs to take responsibility for this and take the proper steps now to fix it before it's too late.
The passenger air bag, in the front passenger seatback, deployed accidentally in my 2005 honda element.we were driving very slowly on a gravel road.we thought we had been shot at, with the loud bang and my passenger's swearing and grabbing his arm.i am going to click below to say there was an injury, but it was only bruising to the upper arm.it was painful.
While driving, the side impact airbag deployed for no reason.the vehicle was 6 months old at the time and still under warranty. I contacted the dealer and they have refused to replace the airbag because of the possibility that something may have hit the underside of the vehicle causing the side impact airbag to deploy.
The passenger side airbag in my 2005 honda element deployed, but i was not in an accident.
I was driving to work on march 26, 2011 on the freeway and it was early and a clear day. I was on the highway and out of no where i heard a loud explosion sound and was completely freaked out. My right ear was ringing and i started to smell smoke. I looked to my right side and the passenger side airbag had exploded out. It wasn't even inflated and there was no one sitting on the seat thankfully. But since no one was on the seat the airbags should have been off, the honda element has a sensor on the seat. I called the honda customer service department and they told me i was responsible for the problem. That i should take my vehicle to a honda dealership and report it to my insurance so that they can take care of it for me.
Driving to work at 6:20am on 08/27/2010, while exiting the 91 freeway (going eastbound) and entering the 71n towards chino hills, my driver side airbag deployed out of nowhere.the deployment (or better, the explosion) hit the left side of my face, my left arm and jerked my head towards the other side (to the right/passenger seat).for a couple of seconds i had no idea what had happened and was partially deaf for about an hour.now my face and arm sting a little, my neck is a little stiff and i'm still hearing a little ring in my left ear.i contacted honda's corporate office in torrance, ca and was told that it was very likely honda would not be responsible for the financial burden since my car is a 2005 element, past the warranty.to that, all i have to say (or ask) is: once the car is out of the warranty, does the manufacturer cease to have responsibility over the overall safety of it's vehicles? to me it seems that is there was no accident, my car wasn't hit or it didn't hit anything, that my airbag shouldn't deploy.nobody has ever told me there is an expiration date on an airbag and my seats are in great condition (as is the rest of my car).ultimately, this deployment could have cost me my life, and i am not exaggerating.i was blown in the face on a major freeway, if i had lost control due to the explosion i could have slammed my car into a wall or another car.
While driving on i95 northbound at approx. 60 miles per hour, my 2005 honda element side-driver's side airbag deployed unexpectedly; it felt like a bomb went off.my 12 month old daughter in the back car seat was completely traumatized by the severity of the event.my ears were ringing and my left rear shoulder was hit by the bag.nothing hit my car to cause the deployment.after regaining my composure i contacted honda usa who told me to contact my insurance company.my insurance company said they do not cover an event such as this because there was no apparent collision.honda usa then said to take it to a honda dealership for an inspection.the honda dealership inspected the element and found no problems or reason as to why the airbag deployed unexpectedly.honda usa assigned me a case #, but has yet to contact me.the honda dealership also refused to release my car because they now deem the car "unsafe to drive".i can get the car if i sign a waiver stating that i will not sue the honda dealership if i get into an accident.my attorney has been contacted.also, my extended warranty does not cover deployed airbags.the situation still remains unresolved.
Driver side airbag deployed with for no reason.
I was leaving work, driving about 10 miles an hour and without warning there was a huge boom in my ear, powder was in the air, the left side of my face was numb (later, red from heated air), my left side was shoved forward and my left ear was ringing. My side impact airbag went off as i was taking a left turn! i thought i had been hit by a car...except there was no other cars around. I pulled over and couldn't figure out what had happened until i opened my door, stepped out and saw the airbag hanging out of the seat. Scared the crap out of me! i am glad i wasn't on the freeway at a faster speed, i probably would have crashed! very sore now though. Left side is sore, neck is very sore! i drove to the honda dealership afterward and spoke to the manager (neff) of the maintenance department. They had a technician (tim) hook up some data machine to my 2005 honda element 4wd - ex. I was advised to come back on monday and drop the car off so they could contact honda corporate hq and get a direction to proceed.the technician (tim), and manager (neff) advised me that until it was repaired, my other airbags would not work. They also stated that they had never seen something happen like this. After a google search of 'honda element airbag defects' it appears that it is a pretty prevalentproblem.i have temporarily parked the car at my house until monday's maintenance appointment.
The driver's side airbag in 2005 honda element deployed while driving on driveway.no accident, nothing hit, no traveling through water, just deployed without cause and the dealer wants $2100 to repair.
On 3/31/09, i rolled my honda element four times (according to fhp report) on i-95, to avoid a construction ladder.no other vehicles were involved.among other injuries, i suffered two full-width rotator cuff tears to my left shoulder. This was a direct result of the drivers side airbag only partially deploying.i have documented with several picturesor the bag still folded inside the seat fabric panel.the passenger side deployed fully, and you can clearly see the difference in deployment size difference of drivers side vs. Passengers side.honda was notified, and denied any responsibility.
I was driving down the road, and for no reason at all, my passenger sideairbag deployed!!!!! scared me to death, glad i wasn't going very fast or i might have gotten into an accident! i am also lucky that it wasn't the driversside airbag, or it could have broken my arm!
From about march of 2007 we started having problems with our brakes, they had been changed about twice a year. We thought cause we drive around in a city, the brakes wear out faster than normal. Then 2 years later we were having problems starting the car. We had to get it jumped start- it several times, before we purchased a new battery. Though it has been a year from the time we got a new battery, we still had problems starting the vehicle. We have taken it in to the auto shop several time, and they could not find the problem. Then the gear would not shift into drive and we took it in to get that fixed, and now it does not start all. It is not the battery, because the dash board lights still come on. At 74,0000 miles we should not be having so many failures with this vehicle!
My 2005 honda element constantly display airbag off, when it's inaccurate, dashboard light doesn't work. There's some kind of shortage because it blinks, come on and go off and stay off. It shows the same information, rather driving or stationary.are there recalls on this car? it's been one problem after another.
On saturday, september 10, 2011, upon starting the ignition of my 2005 honda element, i noticed smoke emitting from the power window switch on the driver's side door. After hearing some crackling noises from the power window switch, it soon popped into a small fire which went out on it's own, proceeded by more continuous smoke.

The contact owns a 2005 honda element. While the vehicle was parked the contact turned the ignition on and noticed smoke and heard a cracking sound coming from the master power window switch on the front drivers side door. The smoke was followed by a small flame. The fire extinguished on its own and caused the door panel to melt. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. The technicians were unable to determine the cause offire and stated the wiring harness and driver side door panel had to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 80,962.

Driver seat belt buckle switch for srs air bag system shuts off srs system - red warning light comes on.this has happened several times after resetting, system may work okay for several weeks.repair shop says common problem seen may times .cost to fix $350+.
I was driving on a busy street, quite slow (about 20-25 mph) and smoke started to billow out of my drivers side door.the smoke was coming from underneath the switches which control my windows.the smoke got progressively worse in a very short amount of time (30 seconds - 1 minute).i was unable to open my windows to let the black smoke out.i opened my car door while i drove into the first parking lot i saw.as soon as i parked, i could see flames under the window switches, which melted the plastic and caused the flames to get larger.i was able to smolder the fire with a jacket while waiting for the fire department.a fire claim was filed.my car was towed, since the fire department advised me not to drive it.i am now awaiting word from the mechanic it was towed to.i work for a home health care agency, and have to transport small oxygen tanks on occasion.i had one in my car at the time and this electrical malfunction could have been deadly.
Dt*: the contact stated the engine would not start after multiple attempts.the battery was recharged, and afterwards, the engine started.the vehicle was inspected by a dealer, who determined the battery needed to be replaced.afterwards, the problem persisted.the vehicle was inspected by a dealer, who was unable to duplicate the problem.

Have a 2005 honda element covered under the nhtsa campaign #05e035000.trailer hitch was installed by the dealer on a new vehicle.was made aware of the recall through consumers reports magazine.checked the nhtsa web site to learn more.called honda dealer who didn't even know about the recall.called american honda number from the nhtsa recall notice, they said my element was not covered as the trailer hitch was not factory installed but dealer installed.honda doesn't mention any factory installed options in the catalog, just dealer installed accessories.my complaint is that honda didn't notify me or anybody else with a dealer installed trailer hitch of the recall.as far as their concerned, i don't have the problem, even though my car exhibited all of the symptoms the recall notice described.what's the point of a recall if they don't notify anybody?
Steering and/or vsa system i bought a new honda element february 12th, 2005. Between then and near the end of 2006, i experienced a total loss of steering on at least 8 occasions. The car would continue in the direction that it was headed. There was no steering at all. The occurrences only lasted for seconds but felt like minutes. This occurred most often in the early mornings (6-7am) and between 15 and 20 minutes after leaving home. There was another problem with the steering during the same period of time. In specific situations, it was hard to control and felt as though the real time four wheel drive would kick-in. This happened mostly behind semi-trucks.after the last occurrence over three years ago when the loss of steering control headed me in the direction of the median and oncoming traffic, i became so fearful of driving the vehicle that i parked it in my garage. After taking in the element on 8 occasions and not having been satisfied with the service department of roebuck honda, i began to explore solutions with other local honda dealerships and with american honda motor company. The dealerships' service centers could not duplicate the steering failure. I have been to dealerships' over 11 times with this problem with no solution. American honda would not take actions to resolve the problem. I have found other reports on steering issues with the element.friends and relatives have suggested that i trade the car in, but i cannot in clear conscience do this. I could not live with myself knowing i had put an unsafe vehicle in someone else's hands. However, i can not afford this. Please contact me at [xxx] .information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).
This issue has occurred multiple times over the course of a two month time frame. On cold mornings, within the first five minutes of driving the car, the car just shuts off, leaving me without brakes, steering, or acceleration. This would require me to take out the key and restart the engine. No error codes are being generated and the air/heat as well as radio continues to work. This has become quite a dangerous situation because the other vehicles are unaware i cannot move the car and the randomness of when this occurs. There is no pattern to it, although it will only happen within the first 5 minutes of driving the car and it will happen when in acceleration or deceleration. My dealership was unable to recreate this issue even after keeping it a couple days. I hope this issue can be figured out, fixed, and recalled so that i can feel safe again when driving my car.
The contact owns a 2005 honda element. While driving at 50 mph, the vehicle accelerated independently and the engine stalled without warning. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 208,000.
The car will stall when in motion and turning the steering wheel to make a turn.the car will stall at a stop sign , the car will stall and brake, fuel and brake lights wil come on but battery is fine and lights stay on. This is been an ongoing problem honda will not honor the recall for the 2005 stalling auto transimission they have replaced the aic , the throttle , the cruise control , o2 sensor.the problem is going over a year since 2014 now worse.
Car dies when driving.no prior warning before it dies (such as illumination on panel).car rpm's rev up and down while in park.windshield cracks.
The bolts to the exhaust flangesand flangesbefore and after the catalytic converter aretotally rusted. The vehicle has been serviced according to the maintenance schedule. I am concerned that if the bolts break this may cause the rear of the car to become airborne . Furthermore the rusting of the bolts and flanges should have been picked up by the honda techs long before the bolts and flanges got to this hazardous condition.

2005 honda element (2 wd) has no heat at all while a/c system is working fine..come to find out, honda released an original tsb of 07-076, and since then replaced it with tsb 08-097 which was "failed heater core".it seems the manufacturer used wrong coolant and so it cloggs up heater core.my car has been in local dealer for 5 days and they tried to blame on everything outside of the heater core and also changed everything except heater core, and still no heat. Finally, they acknowledged the heater core is plugged up and it has to be changed out; however; they now tell me that my vin number does not fit into their tsb and therefore, they won't honor the tsb.called honda america and spoke to 1st level, 2nd, and up to 3rd which [xxx] and eventhough this is a common manufacturer defect (also cannot be introduce failure by the consumer), they still won't honor the repairs.tsb calls for 10 hrs and parts which could run into thousands for common identified and confirmed by honda. It's absolutely absorb that they used wrong products and now causing problems down the road which they are making consumer to pay them for repairs.this clogged heater core not only gives no heat but also could causing car over-heating problem which can damage the engine and transmission at the same time. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).
2005 honda element began running warmer than normal. Car has approximately 53k miles. Internet research found numerous complaints and indication that faulty coolant was used by honda at the factory. Problems include overheating, poor heat in winter. Indicated solutions range from cooling system flush up to replacing the radiator, heater core, and engine. Honda admits no fault. Problems/repairs still be evaluated.
In march of 2007 we had a cold spell.i turned on the heat but it didn't work.i forgot about it as the seasons changed and it warmed up.since the weather has started to turn cold i've tried to turn the heat on.it still doesn't work.i took it to the dealership to get looked at and the heater core has been messed up.my car is a 2005 and has only 52k miles.i've received regular scheduled maintenance on my vehicle.i believe the coolant put in the car at the factory was a bad batch and has therefore messed up the heater core.
The contact owns a 2005 honda element.the contact stated that the vehicle would stall while driving various speeds.there were no warning lights illuminated on the instrument panel.the vehicle has not been repaired.the current and failure mileages were less than 68,800.
There are no events leading to the failure.. No warning at all... The car, a 2004 honda element stalls while driving... In one weekend it did it three times once at 62 mph, once on a ramp between two high speed roads, and once in the middle of a heavily traffic and busy road in the middle lane.i have taken it to the dealership twice.it is there yet, they are trying to duplicate it and cannot.. It is dangerous... To me and to people in my car with me and to others around me in other cars.
I have a 2005 honda element. When the engine is cold it dies on a regular basis. I can start the car and let it warm up but it is very rough and still has a tendency to die when coming to a stop. I have taken it to a mechanic and they can find nothing wrong but i have looked at many honda element owner forums and it seems to be a very common and dangerous issue with the element. Once the engine dies, there is still battery power, but limited steering control. It happens nearly every morning 2-3 times and i live in california where it doesn't get nearly as cold as other parts of the country. This is a safety hazard with these cars.
Takata recall. The contact owns a 2005 honda element. The contact received notification of nhtsa campaign numbers:16v344000 (air bags) and 05e035000 (equipment). The part to do the repair was not available. The contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue.the contact had not experienced a failure.

While driving down the county road at 60 mph at night the headlights turned off. I turned the headlight switch off and then back on and everything was fine for a couple days.this happened 5 or 6 more times and now the headlights will not turn back on unless i switch to high beams. High beam works fine, this is an electrical issue not bulb failure. "this could have been deadly".
This occurred while vehicle was being fueled at gas pump.whenever the gas tank is filled completely by auto-shut off at pump, gasoline leaks from vehicle. I believe this is a repeated failure mode for this vehicle due to vent system failure requiring a replacement of fuel tank system by dealer to render safe. Given the number of vehicles extant under 15 years, believe some sort of safety notice is warranted.
Sometimes the automatic transmission slams hard when shifting from first gear into second gear causing the vehicle to lunge.also when the vehicle is first started and placed in gear it will take off and go 20mph with out depressing excelerator. When engine runs about 10 minutes it will operate as it should .this vehicle had a transmission recall eariler and wonder if the problems were truly resolved or not even though the vehicle was serviced.
Turned on vehicle and put it in first gear and was good and semiconductors then notice got stuck in gear and wouldn't come out. Standard transmission
Hello and thank you for this forum, just bought my daughter an 05 honda element for her graduation, with a little over 100k miles.she loves it, and thought we were getting a straight deal from the sellers, but not the case.when we drove the car, unfortunatly, after buying, we noticed a rumbling noise in the car, so drove to an empty parking lot to try and figure out the source.we nailed it to the rear end by one driving and one walking outside the car.took to my mechanic the next day and was immediatly diagnosed with the 4wd rear differential being the source.he called his transmission contact who immediatly confirmed that the problem is very common for the honda 4wd and that there needs to be a recall because his business has fixed many of these 'unsafe' gear boxes that transer power to the rear wheels.being a concerned father, i'm not going to wait for the right thing to be done by honda, because my daughter and any cars on the road around her, need to be as safe as possible. Your attention to this matter would be greatly appreciated by myself and the other 431 posts i briefly scanned through regarding this defect with the honda cr-v and the element.thank you

Car keeps stalling. In 2011 car noted to be recalled never revived notice car doing exactly what recalls says parts replaced so far by dealer o2 sensor pcv valve and bearing i had to pay for .

Driver seat belt buckle switch for srs air bag system shuts off srs system - red warning light comes on.this has happened several times after resetting, system may work okay for several weeks.repair shop says common problem seen may times .cost to fix $350+.
Air bag indicator ligjht came on when i started car.
Repeated (7 shop visits) attempts to resolve srs (airbag) indicator activating.two seat belt clasp replacements, i can recall.honda refuses to honor vehicle occupant safety warranty to remedy repeated faults tied possibly to defective seat belt harness wiring estimated to cost $400-$1,100.
The air bag stays on even after a the left air bag assembly replaced. There is a loud knocking front end which is worse when it is going about 15-30 miles.
I get a dtc 4-1 code for open or increased resistance in front passenger seat belt tensioner. The seat belt is loose and does not thread itself back once unbuckled. I am trying to get honda to look at this.
The seat belts for the driver and front passenger in the 2005 honda element are attached to the forward edge of the rear door, therefore the rear doors cannot be opened unless the front doors are opened.
Driver's seat rocks when accelerating or braking.honda has issued tsb but refuses to cover cost of fix if vehicle is out of warranty.my car is a 2005 but the tsb covers all vehicles from 2003-2006.
Owner of a 2005 honda element.the driver's seat rocks back and forth, getting progressively worse and now rocking left and rock.this presents a danger when trying to accelerate and brake during driving.since the problem is worsening i feel that at some point my seat will definitely come unmounted causing an accident.honda's local dealership and corporate office refuse to fix this issue for free.this could result in a multitude of injuries - even whiplash from jerking of the vehicle.a service bulletins was issued yet honda claims they do not see this as an issue even though there have been numerous reports and complaints.this is a constant issue for me when driving especially during stop and start and turning.
The contact owns a 2004 honda element. The contact stated that the drivers seat would excessively move forward. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired.the manufacturer was not aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 124,238.
2005 honda element.front seat loose.was told by mechanic that a part was holding the front driver seat that is welded has some problem where it came loose.the front driver seat literally rocks back and forth. When discussed with dealership, they did say "it is not wear and tear" and that it was a mechanical problem.
The contact owns a 2005 honda element. The contact stated thatthe driver's seat brackets became loose and caused the seat to rock back and forth. The failure was progressive.the vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection where they stated that the bushings and the bracket needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 100,000.
Driver's seat rocks during acceleration and deceleration. This is possibly a safety issue in an accident if the seat fixtures were to break. Also the seat belt configuration makes egress impossible from the rear seats only. There is no interior handle for a rear seat passenger to open the door in an emergency.
The contact owns a 2005 honda element. The contact stated that the driver side seat rocked back and forth every single time it was used. The failure occurred for approximately one year. I was driving into the bank drive in teller and my left side airbag went off.
Own a 2005 honda element.at 13k miles both the front seats side seams have torn. We are not hard on this car and are shocked how soon the seats have worn out. We took the car back to honda and they did change the seats, but deny there is a problem overall with the seats.at www.elementownersclub.com there are page after page of complaints about seats tearing with low miles.
The driver side seat rocks back and forth when decelerating at a stop light or at astop sign and/or when performing a turn . It also happens when accelerating after a stop or turn. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection where they stated that the bushings needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. A service bulletin (tsb 03-032) was issued yet honda claims they do not see this as an issue even though there have been numerous reports and complaints. A quick google search informally verifies this happens with other models of honda vehicles (civic, crv, element). This is a constant issue for me when driving especially during stop and start and turning. This presents a danger when trying to accelerate and brake during driving.
I put on my brakes in the middle of rush hour traffic the day before thanksgiving.made rubbing sound and then continued to rub all the way to my daughters.minimal 2 hours in traffic in chicago at rush hour.afraid to drive but no way to get off and nowhere to go.took to midas on fri.over $500.00 now my back brakes are doing the same thing.help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!now 52,0000.the dealer had told me at least another year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!very dangerous.

I bought the 2005 honda element in october 2006, as a new 4 wheel drive, standard transmission.after using it for a short period i noticed the brakes were like putty.they pressed nearly to the floor, and not too effective.the dealer fixed the brakes for free, they told me at the same time another customer had their honda element there for brake problems.after about 2 weeks, the brakes were like putty again.i drove it till the brakes squealed. ( i learned to drive with little use of brakes, shifting down and slowing down at stops and turns.) i had my local mechanic fix the brakes the second time.again the brakes worked about 2 weeks before they were like putty again.i was at the honda dealer last month for 60000 mile transmission fluid change.they told me the brakes were bad.i told them i know they are bad, they are always bad.
My 2005 honda element brake pedal feels soft. They have felt this way for the last year. Please have honda include 2005 elements in their recall.
Ever since i purchased my '06 honda element i have had problems wit my foot touching the accelerator pedal when i go to apply the brake.add heavy boots and a bit of winter ice and it all added up to sudden acceleration and sliding into the front gate on my property while i was trying to apply the brake causing major damage to the car and my property. Thebrake and accelerator are too close to one another!!!i knew some day that this would happen, guess i should be thankful that no one was injured.this is a major design problem.
The srs light came on. I've determined the cause for the light is a defective clock-spring. This is a safety defect and should be covered by honda.
The contact owns a 2005 honda element. The contact was driving 35 mph when the vehicle started to jerk violently from side to side. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer and the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileage was 48,000.
Ltr fwd fm re 2005 honda element steering column defect, reply to birmingham, al ofc.*tgwthe consumer stated she has lost steering on several occasions. When the steering failed the last time, the consumer ended up facing oncoming traffic. The vehicle was taken to several different dealerships and none of them could duplicate the problem.
Dt:the consumer believes that there is a possibility of a rollover with the vehicle.she is concerned because the capacity of the vehicle is 675 lbs.this includes the passengers and cargo limit.she was not made aware of this issue when she purchased the vehicle.she feels that the manufacturer should not sell a vehicle of this size, that has the weight limit as stated above.the vehicle was purchased on 8-21-05.the vehicle's max capacity is 25 pounds less than a honda civic.
The underbody frame is rusted severely causing left rear wheel to be loose making it unfit to drive as is. Due to the significant rust and corrosion discover when took to my mechanic to evaluate poor handling and looseness when driving told me unsafe to drive away
The contact owns a 2005 honda element. When the vehicle was parked on an incline, it independently rolled backwards without warning. As a result, the vehicle failed to shift out of the park position. The contact stated that the ignition key failed to start the vehicle without warning. The contact also stated that the ignition key failed to lock the front driver and passenger side doors. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failures. The failure mileage was 127,000. Updated 7/14/15
I have recently purchased a honda element vin# [xxx]. Not until last week did i or a passenger sit in the back seat. We became aware of the potential danger that the door design presents. You can not open the back door unless the front door is opened first.the "suicide doors" do not allow exit from the back seats (not the original "suicide door" design). This design flaw is a major safety concern. I was not made aware of this design flaw at the time of purchase....scroll down....the system is not working properly...1. How could anyone get out of the back seat in an emergency?2. What would a child do in case of driver incapacitation? an adult might be able to crawl over the driver to the front door, but a child would be at a disadvantage in the back.3. There is no emergency release handle on the back hatch door to access from the inside.4. The little wing windows on the back doors could be kicked out in an emergency, but a child would never be able to do so.5.what would passengers do if the car were to plummet into a waterway? how could anyone escape from the back....which is what is left floating...6. There is no warning sign in the car indicating that the back doors do not open unless the front door is open. How much time, valuable time might be lost as a passer-by attempts a rescue and does not know the doors do not open? perhaps then, a sign, like in airplanes, could be posted both inside the vehicle and outside the vehicle indicating that there is no exit through the back doors. Or, a recal put inplace to put in a quick release emergency access window. Please address this concern to the appropriate departments. I look forward to a reply. The air bag stays on even after a the left air bag assembly replaced. There is a loud knocking front end which is worse when it is going about 15-30 miles.
Since the purchase of my new 2005 honda element ex, there has been a really loud noise coming from the suspension, both front and back. It mostly makes this noise when hitting a dip in the road, or coming into my driveway. It sounds as though someone is hitting there hands down on the keys of a piano. Also, this vehicle has been wearing tires at an alarming rate, for this is the second set of tires it has gone through within 27,000 miles. They were rotated as scheduled by the manufacturer, and the vehicle is in alignment. Also, i had a 2006 honda accord lx which was making the same noise, which the dealership failed to acknowledge. Also, i have friends with the honda odyssey van, ridgeline truck, all which are making the same noise and are wearing tires abnormally.
The bushing that holds the left rear axel to the frame of my 2005 honda element fell apart and dropped the axel causing damage to the tire and wheel axel and other parts.looking at the bushing after the fact, i can see where the two 1" stub bolts have worn the bushing in a oblong hole causing the bushing to fail. I do feel this is a design issue with all elements.please check into this, as i'm almost afraid to drive this car as for it happening again.
Driver's door lock has broken at around 83,000 miles. I was having to unlock and go through passenger's door. Now at 150,000 miles the passenger door lock has broken. Door locks should never break and now i face either climbing through the back of the car or leaving it unlocked, which is a huge safety issue.
While making a left turn in my 2005 honda element, i turned too sharply, causing the left front wheel to drive over a large piece of a previously broken street lamp that was on the corner of the street. Though i was only traveling at 10-15 mph, the car overturned and fell on its side. There were no other vehicles involved. There was some body damage and two broken windows, and some damage to the front wheels/axle of the vehicle. The car is currently being repaired.

I contacted honda, after of some struggles they set me an apt, at 1st they told me is a free recall, then they called me telling me it has other issues that needs to be repair before they work on the recall, it would cost me $4,110.13, i said no, i would go pick up the car, my car was in great working conditions, i have done extensive work on it $$$ is why i find hard to believe honda returned my car broken, i have to tow it to my mechanic. The contact owns a 2005 honda element. While driving at 50 mph, the vehicle accelerated independently and the engine stalled without warning. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 208,000.

Windshield cracked after using defroster. Honda dealer in albany, ny said it was cracked due to a tiny nick in the glass resulting from a stone.
3-5-08, in morning, when i got into my element, i noticed two long cracks in the windshield, starting at the lower right- and left-hand corners, traveling upwards at an angle, toward the center, approx 15 inches long, each. I called the honda dealer, and they said i should check my warranty. I did. Windshield damage not covered. I called honda motor company. They tried to tell me it was not a design defect (as i believed). After telling them i knew of many reports to the nhtsa, they finally agreed to replace the windshield, as "...a one-time goodwill gesture." (i bit my tongue, as i knew that the phone rep knew it was, in fact, a design flaw.)
The contact owns a 2005 honda element. The contact stated that both the driver and passenger side windows collapsed into the door without warning. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic. The technician diagnosed that the window regulator was defective and needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was repaired. The failure mileage was 50,000.
While driving in traffic at 40 mph on paved city streets, the passenger side window suddenly fell into the door cavity and was left inoperable.had to continue to drive the car in cold weather without a side window.took to dealer for repair of window regulator. Dealer had vehicle for 24 hours.repair was it appears this premature failure could occur at any time, leaving the car vulnerable to weather and break ins.this should not happen to a car of this age.repair was $244.32.
Windshield on my 2 month old honda element has a crack and we do not think it was hit by a rock.
I have owned my honda element for two weeks now....first time on the freeway going around 65-70 miles per hour.at a substantial following distance recieved one chip and one large ding/crack in my windshield from oncoming debris--all within the space of one half hour.researched internet only to find that among other complaints there is a class action lawsuit pending right now about this very design flaw in the honda element--many suggest it can be fixed by honda simply reinforcing the glass and flattening the flanges around the windshield to prevent the inordinate amount of dings and cracking. I contacted my dealer and they said it was my problem--but ive done more research only to find that honda has sent tsb's out to many dealers advising them to fix this problem for the 2003-2004 models. My dealer tells me they can't help me.
The contact owns a 2005 honda element.while driving 65 mph,the contact observed a crack in the front windshield 7 or 8 months after the vehicle was purchased.the vehicle was purchasedin 10/2005. The current mileage was 35,000 ,and the failure mileage was 15,000.the windshieldhas not been repaired.
