During frontal collision the frontal air bags did not deploy, consumer was injured in accident.nlm
My car is totaled by another drivers negligence; i was told by a lawyer that because my son and i were not killed in the accident we could not file a claim against the manufactor for the airbags not deploying even though it was a head on colllison. I called the manufactor and all the lady told me was that she would send me a "brochure" on how the airbags worked. I know my son and i were extremely lucky in this accident, however i still think something is wrong with the attitude i have received. I still have to live with the pain of hearing my sons voice scream in terror over and over again in my head and i think its one of the worst things a mother has to go through with her child.

No fix available for recall on drivers air bag and srs light on due to drivers airbag
We were on a city street, approached an unknown dip in the road. The airbags deployed, the headliner is shredded.there is no structural damage to the bumper, fenders or hood.the srs system light is on.the door locks won't work from the fob.the seatbelts do appear to be functioning correctly.i have waited for the recall to include 98's knowing that they would have to be included because of what happened to mine.i don't have pictures at this time but will provide.
I own a 1998 honda civic lx, and the srs light on. It cost me 64.00 to tell me there was nothing wrong. The honda dealership said if goes on again they will replace the computer chip and will cost $500.00 to $700.00 to do that. They don't know what's causing it. I went on the internet and found lots of other people with honda's with the same problem. It appears honda is not taking the blame for it. How safe is it for me to drive my car with knowing the airbags won't go off?i feel this is a very unsafe situation driving my car, knowing the light can be set off at any time, and the dealership has no idea what's causing this? i'm a little skeptical about the honda dealership. After reading all the complaints, many people seem to be having the same problem. *la

Driving at 55 mph a ford focus pulled straight out in front of me and came to a stop.i was approximately 1 car length away when they did this so i did not have time to stop and could not pull out around them because i would have been in oncoming traffic.i t-boned this vehicle doing 55 mph and they were stopped.my front end hit directly on their front drivers side.their front left fender and tire were bent in and both of their front air bags deployed.my whole front end was crushed in and the center of my hood looked like i hit a tree.none of my air bags deployed. If i had not been wearing my seat belt i would have been more seriously injured than i was.where are the sensors for air bag deployment?shouldn't mine have deployed?

While drivingin traffic car would cut off with no warning. Ignition switch would not catch right away and cars rpm was down to three notches from zero when idling. Took car to mechanic 3/22/04 and then again 3/24/04 for car to go on diagnostic machine. Diagnostic testing showed electrical problem coming from distributor assembly. Mechanic contacted honda and this was not a recall.i contacted geico for car to be fixed under mechanical breakdown that is included in my policy. Geico contacted mechanic concerning electrical problem and then authorized for car to be fixed which took from 3/25/04 - 4/1/04.
My car cut off for no reason while i was in motion. I had just got a new distributor. I need to make sure my vin is on the list so i can get my ignition switched replaced. It was a issue when i called honda. Honda said that my car was never fixed previous but they couldn't help me. I would appreciate it if this matter can be resolved.
Car shuts down at random intervals while being driven. This is an ignition switch failure. Usually restarts immediately. Very dangerous!! has died in oncoming traffic!! ignition switch replaced previously due to recall, evidently this is a recurring defect.
Electical problem not fixed yet, engine timing prob caused valve damage, head work required...paid by owner, honda notified.
Car stalls without warning. Have to wait 5 to 10 minutes to restart. Mechanic tried several repairs and finally concluded it's a faulty ignition switch. Nhtsa recall # 02v-120. Today, i almost got hit and parked it until problem is fixed. Lucky to have a backup car. Honda customer service line said they won't fix it, because it has 220 miles. I want honda to act responsibly and fix it. This problem is a recipe for roads disasters especially for people who don't have multiple carsor just taking it for granted. Today, i could have been killed or hurt an innocent person .i am sure there are a lot ofhonda owners struggling with the same problem and fear to come out of the shadows with this scary problem and just driving as if everything is ok. Sometimes when accidents happen because of this, the whole truth is unknown.
Electical problem not fixed yet, engine timing prob caused valve damage, head work required...paid by owner, honda notified.
My car falls under the recall for the honda ignition switch. My vin# says otherwise. However, my car is having all the same problems. I almost hit a wall on the interstate today because my car "quit". My car has done this a couple times. If it dies with out warning, usually i can put it in neutral and start it again... If it starts. I am having trouble talking with the honda dealerships around here trying to get this figured out. I drive interstate everyday to work and back. I am worried that this could cause a serious and deadly crash with me and/or my children in the car.
Bought used june 2011 with about 169,000ish, was assured that everything was checked out.drove back home with no problems, and then the problems began.within two months the battery died, had to replace.in jan of 2012 car began to overheat and i noticed a 2" crack on the top of the radiator, replaced. Now transmission hesitates and rpms go way up when shifting into fourth gear.i drained and changed the fluid with the recommended honda fluid, and now the high rpms and slipping are occurring in all forward gears.i feel like a voice in a freaking tornado when it come to any reasonable solution to my problem.this has been a major blow to honda's reputation for me.this seems to be an issue that needs to be addressed and an immediate safety recall needs to be taken out.
In compliance with nhtsa campaign id number 02v120000, a technician in the service department of an authorized dealer replaced the ignition switch in 2003.however, due to worn contacts, now this switch causes the engine to stall without warning and thereby increases the risk of a collision.
Just recently purchased my 1998 honda civic cx hatchback about 2 months ago, it had 112,608 miles, while reversing out of the dealership it stalled. First sign, i did not no it had a recall the car and just thought it was a fluke . It started right back up.2nd sign, while entering the highway it just quietly stopped running .. This was in february...on april 26, 2011 tuesday , needed to crank the car two times to get it to started in the mourning, in the afternoon after work at 1:30 pm it needed to be started two times to start. At 5:00 pm car started up fine, six houses down to the stop sign and the car stopped again, parked the car and started the car right up. April 27 2011. Wednesday. 4:30 am car started right up. Stopped at sheetz gas station before work, motor stopped running but all the lights and radio were still on, parked and started it once.went to work. 1:30 pm started car up and was heading home. On the highway driving about 60 - 65 miles an hour car motor stops.first time it ever died while driving at highway speeds..put hazards on and parked on the side.parked and then started it once. Drove home. ..it is getting scary, i've put new spark plugs, ignition wires, to correct the problem of the motor stopping before i knew about the recalls on this year civics. Went to honda web sight and typed in my vin number. This car had a recall. It said it was fixed. There has been three owners of this car. 1st. The person who bought it . 2nd. The cleveland honda dealership. 3rd .me. Does a honda dealership have to fix the recall in order for it to say fixed ?cause it wasn't in the car fax that they gave me..i would really like to know who fixed the ignition problem because it seems like this car is having the same symptoms again...electrical part of the ignition switch...
There is a recall on 1998 honda civics for the ignition. I am beingtold my car is not in the recall . My car shouldbe part of the recall it is stalling in the middle of traffic due to the ignition losing it'sconnection . It has almostcost me my life a few times . The car has become unusable due to this problem.when i was driving on the hi way doing 67 miles a hour the car just stopped.luckily i was able to get it to the side beforei was hit . It has done this now every time i try to drive . The mechanictold me what was wrong and told me to check about the recall . I was told my vin was not covered . It should be.
My honda civic 1998 engine stalled two times in the past several months while driving. It is showing exact symptoms as the 2002 ignition switch recall. Over the last year it has also hiccupped several times like it was going to stall. I checked with honda and they said my car was not included in the recall. While drving the vehicle, the engine just quits. There is no stuttering, stalling, or engine misfires, it quietly just quits. The radio, heater fan, brake lights still work but not the signal lights. This has happened many times, including while driving on the highway and busy state roads, creating havoc and extremely dangerous stituations as other cars swerve and angrily honk horns to avoid a collision.when i finally come a stop and try to re-start, it immediately re-starts and runs okay. It is impossible to predict when it will quit - weather and road conditions are not consistent when it fails each time.my mechanic first replaced the alternator but the problem continues.i did a web search and saw that there is a honda recall for this exact same problemand other worktwo honda dealers had no idea what to do other than to with honda civics and other models, including 1998.unfortunately, my honda dealer said that my vin number is not included in the recall, even though the potentially fatal defect my car has with the ignition switch is the same basis for the honda ignition switch recall issued in 2002.
My car stalls without warning. Speed doesn't matter. All dash lights go out. Headlights barely light at night when it occurs. You lose all power. One day it might do it 4 times, the next it might not do it all. If you turn the key off and try starting it again sometimes it starts right up, other times you might have to sit for a few minutes. I just worry about someone hitting me when it happens. Please let me know something.

Complained of i removed the heat shield from the engine to investigate the source of the exhaust leak.i found the exhaust manifold had split approx. On each side of the "y" for a total crack of 6 inches.this was allowing large amounts of exhaust gas to enter the cabin when using the heater or a/c.i was informed by four honda dealers locally that the problem was well known and all 7 local dealers had many manifolds in stock in their parts department.this was an indication to me that many of these were breaking and i was far from alone on this issue.the replacement manifold part number is- 18160-p2e-a12. At ken garff honda in ogden utah, i was told that an extended warranty was in effect for the problem for 8 years or 80k miles.(my civic has 93,000 miles) they stated this was a very common problem for 96,97 and 98 honda civics to have.my concern is if i had sufficient exhaust gas in my cabin to make me ill and the problem was widespread that this could be a serious safety / health issue.a person sitting in their closed, idling car with the ac/heater on they could potentially succumb to carbon monoxide poisoning.withthe above in mind, i contacted american honda motor co. Customer service at 800-999-1009 to relay my information and discuss the issue.i spoke with a woman named [xxx] who told me she would record my concern.i am also concerned that were no symptoms to alert me to the problem other than odor.a non "auto savvy" person could easily overlook the gradually worsening problem just like i did until they died.please investigate the scope of this issue further and i am convinced that this is a widespread issue due to the feedback i got.thank you.information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (f
Cracked exhaust manifold which leads to exhaust gases being blown into the car when in traffic or at idle. These gases create a danger of carbon monoxide poisoning.
Year 2003: 1 o2 sensor replacedyear 2007: engine light on. Was informed due tooxygen o2 sensor bad and also a cracked exhaust manifold. Car acts like it will stall when stopped at a light. I am very concerned. According to the dealership, only some honda civics with a particular vin # qualify for replacement of oxygen/o2 sensor and exhaust manifold. They stated that mine did not (only up to 1997 qualify) and there is no recall for 1998. According to the internet, there are other complaints for this problemfor 1998 honda civics. Please investigate .
I took my car in for service and they told me the exhaust manifold was cracked.this is the third time this part has cracked.i had it replaced twice already at the dealership- they did not cover the part under warranty and i paid $1000 each time to have it replaced.i tried to contact american honda and they refused to compensate me for it.
My car has been stalling our for a period of over two months almost every time i drive it. I recently took it into honda and they said it had something to do with my o2 sensor. Why didn't they notify me when i was in the office that there was a recall notice for my faulty ignition switch and that was the problem?they told me nothing about the problems with my car, never offering the information about my ignition switch. I even went over with the honda service department that my car kept stalling out while driving. When i would sit a stop sigh it would cut off as soon as i attempted to pull out. I feel these people were rude to me because i am a girl and do not know much about cars, but they should have told me the truth no matter what gender. Does honda not know about their recall notices?*ph**dimsii ivoq entry posted after 12/12/02 cut over to artemis**770818
Possible problems with exhaust system.*mr. The exhaust system made a loud noise.
I have a 98 honda civic lx, it seems the exhaust manifold on these cars are defective they crack and the gas emissions are circulated to the cabin of the automobile.the exhaust manifold should not crack on normal use.carbon monoxide co could leak to the cabin of the car, and is poisonous to humans and children.there are a lot of honda civics out here with crack exhaust manifold, it is hard to find the culprit, because the exhaust manifold is covered with ametal cover, but you will notice the smell inside the cabin of the car, when the car is at running.the nhtsa should investigate on this defective.
Had taken car to get inspection.would not pass due to the exhaust manifold having a crack in.this car had59827miles on it!naturallyi was very upset.this car was only used minimally as witnessed by the year vs miles.hardly any hwy use.contacted the dealership and they put up their hands.can't fix because i don't have$ 2,000. Car will not pass insp. Due to strict codes in texas. I now have my fifth honda.honda just dropped the big one on a loyal cust.!!!!!!!
1998 honda crv, with about 100,000 milage, engine light came on. Repaired the distributor sensor. Took it back four more times and the engine light continue to stay on. A week later, took it in to deale for a diagnostic, valve #3 & 4, needed to be replaced, they recommended a new cylinder head. Notified honda manufacturer and they decided to pay half of the cost. I have always taken good care of my car, and have the invoices to proof it. I think honda knows there is a manufacturing problem and should be responsible forthe complete repair cost. I am still paying on my car and this is a financial burden for me and my family.
While traveling 55-60 mph engine would stall, engine indicator light would flash on. Dealer has been contacted, and technician noticed thatoxygen sensor needed to be replaced. Please provide further information.
I have a 1998 honda shadow aero (vt1100-c3) vin[xxx] that has developed an oil guide plug leak.this leak results in oil being pumped out of the lower portion of the engine directly in front of the rear tire while riding the motorcycle.it has been a proven inherent design problem in model years 1998 through 2001.honda has issueda warning and the repair instructions in their september 1999 issue of the honda wrench publication.the dealerships that i have contacted do not claim knowledge of this problem or the article from honda.my understanding is honda still refuses to issue a recall for this defect.i stay in contact with a large group of people who own this same style motorcycle via the internet and this problem is widespread.i am going to have this problem repaired at my own expense as i do not consider the motorcycle safe to operate in it's current condition. I would like to go on record and file a formal complaint and will encourage fellow aero owners who have experiencedthis problem to do the same.i will keep a file with my repair information in the event honda comes forward and acknowledges this flaw in their design and issues a recall.information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6)

I have been driving for over 35 years and never had to replace an exhaust manifold on any of my vehicles. Today my mechanic told me that mine was the second one in less than a month that he has replaced on a honda. There is obviously something wrong here.
I began the process ofhaving the car repaired on august 14, 2000.by today, august 18th, the honda dealer had mentioned to the repair shop that iam having the work done at that they had ordered 6 of these manifolds. On monday when i had called the dealer for parts, they did not have the manifold in stock. I belive thatthis could be a sign of a major defect. Although it does not directly pose a threat to me physically, it could allow exhuaust fumes into the vehicle.i would like to presue the manufacture and attempt to have them replace the part.

While driving there was a loud noise like the muffler had gone bad.upon inspection of the vehicle, the consumer noticed a large crack in the exhaust manifold.the dealership indicated this was a common problem on earlier model years, and the manufacturer extended the warranty on this part. The dealer replaced the manifold with a reinforced part.
In regards to the exhaust manifold crack--- i noticed an exhaust smell coming into passenger compartment and noticed that the engine compartment was slightly louder than usual. I got used to the smell but now i just get headaches. I figured it needed a new exhaust manifold gasket but upon further inspection before buying a gasket,i noticed a crack in the exhaust manifold where the pipes come together under the heat shield. The crack looks like it stems out in different ways from the oxygen sensor; it is probably due to poor design.i figure that it probably impairs the functionality of the oxygen sensor thus altering emmissions.i contacted honda and found out that a new exhaust manifold costs over $700 dollars just in parts, which i cant afford.i found that honda extended the warranties on the 1997 models due to the same problem and found that the 2002 honda civics' are equipped with stainless steel manifolds rather than the cast iron found on my car, therefore i know honda is aware of the problems and they should fix the problems before the crack stems all around and my exhaust system falls off causing further damage or causes me to fail a smog check.in regards to the rear passenger windows, the buttons don't work thus not allowing rear windows to be rolled up or down.
I noticed a loud noise and odor, took car to honda mechanic, manifold was cracked and had to pay $500+ to fix. My sister has the same vehicle and she had the same problem at about the same time. Inquired with honda to see about recall...there wasn't one?? we both fixed the problem, which was over 1 year ago. The problem has recently recurred...now i am seeking answers??

Dealer stated that a/c system needed to be totally replaced. Stated that car had "black death".. When i called other honda dealer , they stated that they were aware of a number of these instances, and that 1998 civic needed the entire a/c system replaced in many cars that they have seen.. Also,my roommate , with a 1999 civic , had to replace her a/c unit last year also.. And with considerably less miles at the time.. When i described my symtoms, she said it was exactly what happened to her car also.. Called honda customer relations line.. Was told that "i needed to take responsibility for repair".. If it is happening to my car, and my roommates car, isnt it happening to other civics too?i also am a repeat honda owner, and got 200,000 miles of wear out of my last civic with very minimal repair....i feel that honda should recall this problem..and that it might be something affecting those of us with civics in the southern parts of the country.. Air conditioner failed.
My a/c unit has gone out on my car with an estimate of the repair to cost $1000.although my car has high miles, i've taken good care of the car and the a/c unit has hardly been used.i've contacted honda to no avail.numerous other parts have failed.those repairs were done either under warranty or goodwill.
I was driving and i had on the a.c. On low. I heard a loud poof sound then i saw a cloud of smoke come from behind my car. I stopped and found little pieces laying on the ground at the point i heard the noise. Until then i had no warning noices, just the poof. Then my car started blowing hot air. I went and had my a.c. Checked, and i was told my compressor completely blew off. Now i need to replace my whole a.c. In a car thats just barely over four years old.
I was driving my honda civic from fortworth, texas to new mexico on a trip when i heard a strange noise. Soon after i noticed my air conditioner was not blowing cold air anymore. When my mechanic looked at it, he said the compressor had exploded and had a large hole in it. I think this is a safety hazard because when the compressor explodes it is sending shrapnel into the engine compartment. Could the refrigerant catch fire? i found two reports of 1998 honda civics with exploding compressors at the nhtsa website and none for any other make. When i contacted honda, they said tough luck, you should have been a good customer and bought an extended warranty.
While drivingair conditioner started making noise, and then stopped cooling completely. Problem was making vehicle runs roughly.contacted dealer, and dealer stated that compressorhad exploded and shot pieces of metal into the air conditioner system.

My !998 honda civic ex stalled on freeway while going at 50mph. It was due to failure of ignition switch. Honda had a recall on certain van models only and my vehicle is not on the list. My safety is at stake here so are others who drives a honda. Although i have 162,000 miles on the vehicle, the switch as far as i know is not an item called out for replacement as part of the vehicle maintenance. So how would i know when to replace ifit is not an item that is a required attentionwhen vehicle is brought in for service, this is a safety hazard and life endangering problem. I could have been killed on the freeway when the car stalled.
While driving, the vehicle needed to make a hard stop.on stopping the vehicle brakes failed and the brake pedal hit the floor. Very lucky that no vehicle or pedestrian were hit. Car was approximately two miles from home.drove remaining distance at 5 mph with parking brake only. On inspection discovered the two brake lines under the protective plastic were corroded.in addition, the three fuel lines are also severely rusted, and fuel is leaking from the return line. The corroded brake lines are lines 9 and 11 in the 1998 honda civic lx brake diagram.line 11 is currently leaking leaving no brake pressure for the entire system. The fuel lines are pipes 15, 16 and 19 in the fuel line diagram with fuel line 19 leaking. The vehicle is currently awaiting to be serviced. Based on searches online for honda vehicles, this is a fairly common occurrence especially in areas with high usage of salt such as the mid-west. Vehicle owners need to be notified of the dangerous and potentially deadly symptom. Why is there no recall or notification from honda?in addition, the repair of all of these lines is very costly to the owners.

The passenger side door and window mechanism is not working properly.the door can not be unlocked with a key, with keyless entry remote or from unlock handle on the inside of the car.the door will not stay unlocked even after turning key in key slot.the only way to open passenger side door is to insert key in key slot, turn key and pull door handle at the same time.the passenger can not open door from the inside.when opening or closing window, the window would get stuck.the window switch would have to be switched between open or close several times before window will continue moving. Both of these malfunctions are potential safety issues.what if the passenger(s) need to get out during an emergency?
Driver side door is inoperative, and is unable to open the door from the outside or inside.
This and other hondas i own consistently misrepresent the speed at which the car is actually travelling.i used to be inadvertently caught in the passing lane going what i thought was the legal speed limit, only to have other drivers ride on my rear bumper.i finally had the speedometer checked on this car when i took it in for an emissions test.i feel this is a safety issue; in addition it smacks of outright fraud since it appears that hondas get better gasoline mileage than they do, and they run out of warranty several thousand miles sooner than they should.it also causes extra mileage fees to kick in sooner for those who lease.
Transmission doesn't shift properly vehicle slips while driving causing the rpms to go up. Dealer said nothing wrong would not put on computer went to them 3 times same complaint same reply went to aamco transmissionthey put on computer said there was a problem, went to auto repair shop they found a code bad solenoidtook to dealer 4th visit they replaced a solenoid problem still there. In the first incident the steering hose and rack were leaking (at 10,000 miles).i was told at my appt. For an oil change and steering inspection that they didn't have time to do both, so they wanted to change the oil and look at the steering later.i insisted they do the opposite and half an hour later i was told that i could not safely drive my car home.currently, my transmission computer was found to be faulty after i reported a severe vibration accompanied by a constant sound.this too was shrugged off over the phone as being typical of the cvt automobiles.twenty minutes after i had picked the car up after it was "repaired" i returned it to the dealer as it was shuddering and idling down to 0 rpm's, almost dying at stoplights.this has yet to be resolved as they don't seem to know what to do in regard to these transmissions.

I have a honda civic dx 1998, with 60000 miles now presenting with a failed transmission. Several trips to the dealershipfor that very same complaint resulted in no problemsdetected with the transmission.the problem began two days after the manufacturers warranty expired.

Honda, civic lx, 1998, transmission problems. Transmission refuses to smoothly operate sometimes when you are shifting from first gear over to second to third, and to fourth, the rpms's speed up between gears.sometimes it will go completely out of gear.if i drive very cautiously and carefully this most of the time will not happen.it started happening a few days after buying the car.i'm a senior citizen, that checked consumer reports and thought this was a reliable car.i'm now receiving all sorts of estimates such as completely replacing at $2500 .any guidance on this matter would be greatly appreciated.this is happening in city driving, only once on freeway.thank you.

Transmission failed causing vehicle to surge.
Transmission is intermittently not changing gears.when it reaches high gear transmission would stay in low gear. Dealer notified, and condition has been resolved.
Since the day we bought it, the transmission intermittently jerked (sometimes violently) when downshifting, especially around 40 mph.it also downshifted at odd times, like going down hills.i took the car to the dealer on 12/12 & they reported "no problem found."on dec 27 the engine made lots of noise but had little speed & my family had to drive the handicapped car the short distance home.the dealer said the computer reported that the transmission ration was wrong.they said the more they worked on it, the worse it became.they couldn't fix it even with the help of honda experts, so they intended to replaced the transmission.unfortunately, the dealer wrecked the car & they have had the car a month.we want a new car because we don't trust the reliability of the car but honda & the dealer aren't cooperating.
Transmission will grind when putting it into reverse and at times will slip. Contacted dealer.
Going off the honda brand name, we purchased a 1998 honda accord in november of 2004. At the time, the vehicle had 101,000 miles on it. Less than a week after purchasing the vehicle, my wife noticed that it hesitated and then shifted hard into second gear. She aslo noticed that there was a severe hesitation when accelerating after slowing down for a turn or when trying to merge into traffic. This causes an unsafe condition of a vehicle trying to get into the flow of traffic and being unable to accelerate; she's almost been hit several times. We've been on the phone with honda, and been told that they won't pay for anything. I don't have an estimate yet, but, after doing some research, this problem seems to cost anywhere from $2000-4000 to fix. If honda continues to refuse to replace what is obviously a defective component, i've resolved to do two things: contact a lawyer and never waste my money on one of their vehicles again.
98 honda civic dxtransmission slippagemy car has been having this transmission slippage problem intermittently for about 4 years.it recently started doing it for about 2 weeks straight so i tried to go online and find out if there was some type of solution.i found other complaints about transmission problems in honda accords/civics/odyssey's and even acuras.i called honda corp. And their only response was you're not on the recall list so you'll have to go to the dealer and get it repaired.i did that and they told me i needed to get a refurbished trans at 5k a pop!that'sa rip off.so i researched it some more and found out on about.com that you can basically just drain the transmission fluid and replace it with honda atp fluid and replace a piece called the solenoid assembly and a washer.if this is the case why isn't honda doing a general recall and have everyone pay a certain price or have everyone with certain vin numbers come in and have their trans checked out.this is a rip off through honda corp.they're trying to make money and so are the dealerships!
I have a cluth problem with my automatic transmission. I was told that this is unusual at 70,000 miles. I have seen similar complaints about this. The check engine light came on a few months after i bought the car and i was told by the dealer that nothing was wrong. I now wonder if that might have been an error.
Design of transmission allows engine to downshift, when this happens it feels as if the brakes and engaging.
Transmission continually experiences slippage when trying to accelerate, unable to be fixed by dealership at this time until honda can find resolution.mjs
1) transmission failure in a 1998 honda civic lx for the second time and with only 115,000 miles. 2) transmission was replaced prior when car had 59,000 miles.3) transmission (third one now) replaced for the second time.
1998 honda civic ex w/ 55,000 miles. Vehicle began shifting harshly @ 53k. Brought to dealership, reported dtc p0730. Dealer recommended replacing automatic transmission for over $4000. Found tsb 00-012 which recommended flushing transmission & replacing linear solenoid.followed tsb recommendation.helped for 2 days but problem returned. Tsb 00-012 suggested honda might offer goodwill consideration for cars out of warranty.i asked dealer to split the cost with me which i have heard has worked for some other people with this same problem.they referred me to centralized honda cust srv which denied my request.meanwhile i have found the following information on several transmission rebuilder sites regardingmy transmission model (b4ra):"common complaints in the a4ra, b4ra, and m4ra transmissions are harsh upshifts, downshifts and forward engagements, while reverse engagement is fine. These problems can be caused by a broken cpc (clutch pressure control) valve spring. The spring is located in the secondary valve body, and not available from honda. Sonnax has developed a replacement spring 88894 that has a wire diameter larger than the oem design. This significantly reduces the stress on the spring, preventing future breakage."to me, this suggests that this model of honda transmissions contains a faulty part, resulting in much higher than normal transmission failures.i believe that honda should stand behind their products & extend the warranty for the automatic transmissions affected by this problem & not just provide random goodwill assistance to a select few who complain the loudest.honda's denial that this is even a problem (even though there is a tsb identifying a huge group of potentially affected cars & transmission rebuilders have seen the problem so often that another company has actually seen fit to create a better replacement part) has turned me from a virtual honda evangelist to a very dissatisfied customer who would be hard-pressed to purchase another honda.

Two screws loosened, allowing the handle used to shift between park, reverse, n, drive, etc. To come off while driving on interstate highway 490.i drove to a gas station, applied the parking brake, and reattached the handle myself.however, if this happened while the vehicle was backing out of a driveway, it would have been difficult or impossible to get into "drive" and traffic would be blocked or an accident would have happened.if vehicle was in "drive" in an urban area where only parallel parking (no lots) exists, shifting into reverse (to properly back into space) would have been difficult or impossible and vehicle might have to stop in a traffic lane for to be repaired in the street or to be towed.

Front lap seat belts do not retract after releasing buckets.belts hang loose along side outerseat area door. Dealer notified.
There is no seatbelt extender available for my honda civic--i have been stopped and given a warning--the next is a 150.00 ticket--i have 5 honda cars...i need a seatbelt extender--seatbelts are the law in this state and surrounding states.
Daughter involved in head-on collision.attempting to turn left, hit by oncoming car going approximately 45-50 mph.wearing seatbelt at the time of the accident, but seat belt failed to work properly, was flung into passenger's side of car.both airbags deployed, neither striking her.was flung back to drivers side of car.ambulanced to hospital with a fractured left radius, severely displaced fracture of leftclavicle and scrapes and contusions to left knee.3/25/99 wrist fracture has healed, clavicle still not healed and neither is knee.car totalled.would like to know why seatbelt did not work.i am however very grateful that my daughter was not more seriously injured.i would gratefully appreciate some kind of response from my complaint.how can i get a response from honda?
Rearleft and right side seatbelt buckle will become undone, causing css to become loose, resulting in loss of protection.
Vehicle struck rear of another vehicle, brakes were locked at 40 mph, seat belt did not lock, allowing drivers face to hit steering wheel, air bags did not deploy, honda contacted, and has shown no interest in investigating or checking the car. Stated to take it to the dealer after it was repaired, and if anything was wrong, they would replace parts.
Front seat belts do not retract when unbuckled.ratchet mechanism seems flimsy.
Failure of the front passenger side safety belt.it will latch, but if one pulls on the belt, the latch does not hold.
The front passenger safety belt does not always securely "latch" into the buckle.within the past several months, the seatbelt has "unlatched" without warning on the person sitting in the front passenger seat.i've figured out that after inserting the safety belt into the buckle, it'll "stay secure" if i push down on it one more time until i hear a solid click.i have not had to do this in the past, but i am very concerned for any passengers that may be seated in my car while in motion.those unaware of the "double click" trick (to get it "safely secured") are definitely at the highest risk of injury...they assume that when they insert the safety belt into the buckle (and hear the initial click) they are appropriately protected by the seat belt.however, several passengers have been alarmingly surprised to have their seatbelt "automatically" unlatch itself while the vehicle is in motion!although this problem does not occur every time the belt is inserted into the buckle, it still causes me great concern for the safety of those sitting in that front passenger seat!
Rear seat belt does not tighten up when the belt is activated. Also, bolt that holds the seat in place failed whenchild safety seat was placed in the rear seat.seat belt has been replaced once, and has failed again.dealer has been contacted. *ml
The vehicle was at an exit whena truck rear ended thevehicle, throwing the car 69 feet into another vehicle. Airbag did not deploy, and the front seat broke. Dealer contacted.one person was injured in accident.

After letting someone in rear seat.the front goes to reclining postion, not the upright, driving position.
After being rear ended at approximately 50 mph , the consumer struckthe vehicle infront of his vehicle and the driver seat back broke. The air bag did not deploy.
The driver's side seat latch mechanism fails to lock the seat in position.the seat will lock from going forward or backwards along the floor, although it will not lock when tilting to lean back or lean forward causing a very dangerous driving situation.
The contact owns a 1998 honda civic. The contact stated that while parked, the brake pedal abnormally traveled to the floorboard. The contact inspected the vehicle and noticed that the brake line was leaking brake fluid from under the plastic housing. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 200,015.
The consumer has experiencing problems with anti-lock brakes.when the consumerwas driving during inclement weather, slammed on the brakes andcar refused to stop.as a result, carslid across the road.the consumer slid off of the road into a ditch.the manufacturer was not contacted.
May 9, 1998 when the first occurence happened.i was driving at 25-30 mph and when i needed to brake, it didn't work at the first time.i had to pump several times and still it didn't work at all, so i used the emergency hand brakes, and so it stopped. This happened when my mileage was prior to 1479.the next day, i contact paragon honda to schedule the check-up. May 13, 1998 - i took the car to paragon honda and relate them my complain.they test drive it and found all ok at that time(i have the invoice no. 85016 dtd. 5/14/98).the weekend (may 17, 1998) when i used the car, the same problem happened again.i feel very very scared because i almost got into accident.i had to pump several times and still it didn't work at all.same remedy, i used the handbrakes to stop it. May 18, 1998 -this time i talked and insisted with the paragon manager that they should really test and check the car brakes for several days.they roadtested the car for 163 miles, and found everything normal.after couple of months, it happened again.this time i was hesitant to take the car back to honda dealer because they were not able to solve the problem.i was so busy with my business that i had no time to go to the dealer and fight for my right to have my car fixed.i decided later on to go to a consumer complaint bureau to ask for advise as to what to do, till i tried to check you on the internet.last month of november, it happened at least once a week when i'm driving at 25-30 mph.this time, i decided to take a serious action on this problem. Please if you have any question, call us at 212-594-2988.i appreciate your immediate action on my complaint.thank you.janos papai
While driving at 45 mph on wet pavement went to apply the brakes and the vehicle rear ended another vehicle. Driver's air bag failed to deploy.
A noise come from the brakes whenconsumer was not braking or accelerating. Could hear noise at any speed.
Consumer statesthat when the brakes were appliedduring an emergency stop, the wheels lockedand vehicle tilted to the left. The dealer has been notified.

Brake pads noisy.
I completely lost by brakes on my 98 honda civic with no warning.i lost my front brakes and rear brakes at the same time and my foot completely went to the floor without any resistance.i down shifted and used my hand brake to get to the honda dealer.the honda dealer cleaned and repaired the brakes (they did not replace the brakes).the mechanic told me that my car only has one master cylinder.when one of the pistons in my rear brake popped out, i lost all 4 brakes.
The contact owns a 1998 honda civic. While driving 10 mph, the engine stalled and the steering wheel became difficult to turn. The failure occurred numerous times. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 96,702.
This vehicle was in a rollover accident which occurred at 55-60 mph,and the air bags did not deploy after hitting a highway rail. Manufacturer has been contacted.
Vehicle keeps pulling to the right, causing steering wheel to become very difficult to manage. Dealer cannot correct defect.
While driving the defective steering column malfunctioned, causing the vehicle not to have steering ability which caused an accident.
While drivingat about 45mphignitor failed, and the engine shut completely off. Also, power steering failed.
Consumer stated thatgranddaughter bought a certified honda civic and had nothing but trouble since she purchased the vehicle. One month after the vehicle was purchased the head gasket blew out, and needed to be replaced.this was done by the dealer that sold her the vehicle.then, power steering pump leaked, and it was repaired 2 months later.in may of this year the same thing happenedpower steering pump leaked again.the engine had to be replaced again at 89440 miles.the transmission was replaced due to shifting problems at 90552 miles.

The paint on my 98 civic is fading....there are "white chalky patches" all over the hood.it looks absolutely terrible; the delamination defect is quite obvious.sunlight fades the paint!
The contact owns a 1998 honda civic. The contact stated that the dashboard on the front passengers side near the steering wheel was cracked. As a result, the air bags were exposed. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 173,000.
White "chalky spots" appear on hood, front panels, and front roof panels when exposed to sunlight.
Defective reaction to sunlight. White "chalky spots" appear on hood/front panels and front roof panels when exposed to sunlight.
On may 20, 2011, around 5:45 -6:00 in the morning. I was traveling south on i-95 near the rest area in glynn county just a little after exits 42. It appeared that i had ran over a semi-truck tire that was in the far right lane. It was later confirm after getting a little closer to the rest area a semi-truck was on the side of the road getting a tire replace by an towing company. While on my lunch break i notice the left drivers of my vehicle had been damage due the object in the road this morning.
Consumer got into accident, claims that 2/3 of the damage could have been prevented if the bumpers were made out of a more crush resistant material.
Bumper failed.yh
I had the bumper replaced by honda of hollywood through the other partys insurance, however it took almost 2months to have done because they were giving me the run around.i had the bumper replaced 9/11/00 and richard in the hollywood honda autobody shop tells me that there should be an opening where the bumper and body of the car meet.i told him when i purchased the car it was like that the two met closely and now he is trying to convince me that its was never like that and to look at all the other hondas they are not close together. At this point 2 months of being dumped on, the farmers insurance adjuster from the guilty party made a deal with richard from my initial precise estimate of $895.00 to honda's $413.00 and the bumper is worse off. I need a lawyer can someone help me out?
Right front fender edge next to front edge of the door pushes in during normal use, this has bent the fender and interfacing from normal opening of the door. Yh
Fabric on left and right door panel worn excessively.
Both rear doors are inaccessible from the exterior of the vehicle.first occurrence was with the passenger side rear door approx. 1 month ago.the most recent occurrence is with the driver side rear door < 1 week ago.
On-going / intermittent problem of electrical shorts / statistic electricity received from either side of the doors; dealer notified and informed that nothing could be done. Unless consumer is willing to pay for electrical diagnostic or rewiring.
Rear passenger door handle gets loose even after repair.yh
Front door does not stay open while the passenger wishes to exit.
Defective reaction to sunlight. White "chalky spots" appear on hood/front panels and front roof panels when exposed to sunlight.
The support rod for the hood is approximately 1 ft. In length, and is located approximately one foot from the hood hinge. The support rod also contains a manufactured bend in the center that is meant to fold under pressure. It failed. Slight pressure was applied to the hood while in the raised position between 1.5 and 3.5 inches . The hood bent on the rod. There was no extra reinforcement in the manufactured placementarea provided for the rod. The damage is minimal.....only a 1/4 inch dimple in the hood, but the hood is so thin that the only manufacturer recommended repair is complete replacement of the hood.i feel that this is a definite design flaw; the entire weight of the hood pivots on the rod at only one foot in distance from the fulcrum(hinge). Physically it is a certainty that damage is inevitable.
Defect in the hood support rod caused the hood to come crashing down, almost resulting in injuries, support rod broke in half in the middle of rod.the hood came down with enough force to buckle it.
While openingtrucklid falls immediately on occupant which may cause injuries.honda said it's a poor design oftruck.please provide further information.
Rear trunk lid will not stay open if vehicle is on an incline, on one occasion consumer opened the trunk lid, bent over and reached inside the trunk, the lid came down on his head injurying him.
Trunk lift springs are totally ineffective and allow trunk lid to drop suddenly striking any person or object in its path
Trunk lid won't stay open.
Air leakage into structure due to possible alignment problems along front bumper/hood enclosure, causing pollutants to enter vehicle and consumer discomfort (headache).mjs

I have had problems with my vehicle rolling back on inclines.now my transmission must be replaced.
When making a turn vehiclemakes a loud clunking noise and pulls to the side.consumer notified the dealer , but the dealer will not inspect the vehicle until it is broken.

During 2000 (est) i brought my car to honda dealer to replace the ignition switch.and get a new set of keys i think i paid about $800i never receive any recall notice until this year my mechanic check and he said my car had recall. .i further refer to internet that some car were repaired free in changing ignition switch.in this regard i would like to know if my car is a recall in spite of same problem.with other carsthank you, jaime
Recall # 99e015000 honda/accessory floor mats; the recall required honda to fasten floor mats to prevent intrusion on the gas pedal, which could cause it to stick in the down position. Consumer writes that a satisfactory solution has been provided by the local dealer, and the issue is now closed. *ml
While traveling 55-60 mph engine would stall, engine indicator light would flash on. Dealer has been contacted, and technician noticed thatoxygen sensor needed to be replaced. Please provide further information.
1998 honda civic with safety concern. Consumer states that he noticed this safety concern. He would like to know what is considered a safe vehicle.
This is an expensive item to fix and dispite the purchase of an extended warrenty it's not covered. Shouldn't this be a safety concern and covered by the manufacturer? no safety defec tlisted within summary.

Intermittent problems, with centeral computer contorl, battery sometimes completely drains, sometimes does not, transmission does not engage sometimes , dealer uncooperative.
Engine check light has been on since april and won't go off.dealer can't determine the cause of the problem.
While approaching a stop sign andapplying the brake pedal there was no response due to the floor mat getting caught up under the accelerator ,causing vehicle to almost be in an accident. Dealer has not been contacted.
Rcall 99e015000,floormat recall is not "broad" enough for the owner who already replaced the orginial floor mat with an aftermarket floor mat because of a safety defect in the orginial floor mat.manufacturer will not do the recall for an aftermarket floor mat.please provide further information.
While accelerating the mat jammed on accelerater and got stuck. Consumer had to go under steering whell to release mat. Consumer took vehicle to dealer, and they corrected the problem. However, problem has been reoccurring.
Takata recall so i w on my way to work ad s involved in an accident at the time all i knew was after trying to apply the brakes the vehicle did not stop. The car was toed and considered a total loss i was ticketed for careless driving. After paying to get the vehicle back in my possession i was looking threw the car and realized the floor mat was stuck under the peddles i then when and ran the vin on car facts and found an open recall for this same problem . I was never once notified about a recall on this vehicle i am now having to pay for others car repair and medical bills due to a problem that should never have happened i am at a loss and dont know what to do.

Response letter to consumers complaint letter address to consumer protection division**nar**ccconsumer complained that his vehicle was damaged while in transit.
As the consumer was pulling away from the inside of the garage, the vehicle suddenly accelerated with out touching the gas pedal.the brakes were not functionaland the vehicle went through the wall.finally, the vehicle stopped when it hit the wall.the dealer was notified.*scthe consumer stated there was an open recall regarding this issue.
Cruise control was set at 55 mph. Consumer went to apply the brakes, and theydid not disengage cruise control, causingvehiclenot stop.also, brakes were totally inoperative, causing loss of control.
Vehicle experinced sudden acceleration resulting in vehicle collision.
Due to a defective transmission system, vehicle slips while driving which causes rpms to go up. This may cause a crash.dealer said they need to replace transmission.please provide further information.
While parking, car suddenly accelerated up over two curbs and a grass hill (one curb on each side of the hill), sideswiping another car until the engine finally cut off. Dealer could not duplicate problem and denies that the car could have caused this acceleration.
While driving on and approaching one of if not the largest socal freeway interchanges, driving at about 70mph or so, back to la from san diego; our 1998 civic lx took control of itself and the speed increased to over 105mph, shaking and thumping.after weaving around pockets of traffic, including using the small shoulders, and all 5 or so lanes, as we approached the massive merging of freeways, panicked, we stomped and banged the floor, dash, everything. As shock wore off we thought we were dead, somehow put car (auto trans) into neutral, i believe we may have turned off the car at some point, the brakes finally started to work.gas pedal was absolutely not stuck (this model was already repaired due to a floor matt recall), feet were not even on the gas as it started to happen (not in cruise, just shock). The car simply took off.we are forever traumatized by this experience and never thought to report until recent news reports. Approx date is really unknown but the year was 2002 as i soon after bought another car.*cw
While accelerating on to a highway, the accelerator pedal felt as though it was pulled to the floor and the car began accelerating out of control.i was in 5th gear and put the car into neutral, but it kept accelerating.i finally turned the ignition off [key] and coasted to the shoulder.took car to dealer and was told no problem, that they were 99% sure the car mat must have gotten stuck under the pedal.i don't think so.
Regarding my 1998 honda passport - stop and go traffic.put foot on brake and car suddenly accelerated.put both feet on brake, engine sounded like it had been kicked into passing gear.brakes were squealing.rear ended vehicle in front of me.vehicle i hit jumped forward and my passport continued to rev and lurch forward striking the vehicle again.after the 2nd strike the engine kicked back down.i'm seeing similar reports regarding the passport and it's sister/brother the rodeo.this is dangerous.thankfully no one was injured this time.this car can't be trusted.
While driving 10 mph vehiclecontinued to accelerate without any warning.occupant applied the brakes which were inoperative.itresulted in a crash.
While driving the vehicle at 60mph in march, the vehicle would not decelerate after brakes were applied. Checkedcruise control which was not on. Checked gas pedal to see if stuck. Had guided vehicle to off ramp & manged to turn it off. Shifted into neutral & nothing worked. Took vehicle to dealer & mechanic could not duplicate problem. Vehicle is now jerking also, 6 months later.
While driving, cruise control failed to disengage.consumer attempted to disengage cruise control with the brake pedal several times, consumer finally came to a stop on the side of a road, dealer states there is no problem with the vehicle.
While driving in a parking space, vehicle accelerated and went over concrete in space and hit a wall. Repairs done, both airbags deployed.dealer cannot duplicate the problem.
While driving at 45 mphaccelerator got stuck, and the consumer had to pull the accelerator up by hand.
Gas pedal keep getting stuck. Consumer had to hit emergency brakes to stop vehicle.
I was traveling on a wet road at 40mph. When applied brakes, the body of the vehicle jerked forward abruptly and the brakes locked up on me, causing the vehicle to skid off road. The vehicle hit concrete blocks and totaled the front end. The air bags failed to deploy. Ts
Vehicle was in the parking lot when consumer was backing out of a space, shifted gear into drive and accelerator pedal went to the floor , causing the vehicle to hit another vehicle and a light pole. Reason unknown. Dealer notified.
Vehicle accelerator stuck widely open. The vehicle did not slow down when depressing the brake pedal.speed increased from 67 to 100 mph. Consumer turned the ignition off to stop vehicle. Vehicle is being checked by dealer.
My accelerator pedal gets stuck and cannot be pressed unless a lot of force is used.when the pedal comes unstuck the car then jumps forward.this makes it very difficult and dangerous to drive, especially in slow traffic and when it rains.i have taken the car to the dealer eight times to repair from june 1998 to november 2002, but they could not repair it, even though honda had a safety recall for this problem.the floor mat never caused the sticking.now honda says there is nothing wrong with the car and that any possible problems are due to lack of proper maintenance (improper oil and transmission fluids used).
Two separate incidents of accelerator pedal sticking and brakes not working.accelerator pedal stuck when pulling out of parking lot.i was pushing on brakes with no response. Had to use emergency brake, and the car continued to "rev" trying to accelerate.turned car off.restarted car, and again the car engine was trying to accelerate even though brakes were pushed.was not using floormat.dealership cannot duplicate.in october 99, turned into parking lot and accelerator pedal stuck and car increased speed.again brakes did not work.had to use emergency brake to get car to stop.
When accelerating, pedal left drivers' foot and went down to the floor into a full open position. Vehicle continue to accelerate, even after brakes were applied. After vehicle was put into park, the accelerator went to a close position.
While driving the vehicle accelerator cable got around the cruise control, causing the vehicle to accelerate and almost caused an accident. Had to break a part aroundthe cruise control in order to stop the vehicle.
Accelerator pedal sticks, several cables mounted too tight and needed adjustment.
When at idle engine revs from 500rpm up to 1500 -2000rpm also when on a hill at a stop the car will roll backwards before engaging and going forward.on above date the car revved up to 4000 rpm before finally engaging and i was able to proceed from the stop.when the car was taken in for servicing i discovered that there had been a "service bulletin" mailed to dealers about this very problem.honda knew about this particular problem and not made it public.if i had known that this was a symptom of a faulty transmission i would have certainly brought the car in.my waranty has expired 6 mos ago and the repair will not be covered.i have been accused of faulty maintenance because i did not bring in the car to the dealership for oil changes.i feel that this is a potentially dangerous situation as well as costly and that since honda knows that it exists that there should be a recall or at least information made public about this problem.

My daughter set the cruise control at 65/67 mph and the car continued to accelerate. After attempting to tap the brakes and turn the cruise control button off, the car was traveling at 90 mph.when trying to stop the vehicle she had to desperately press on the brakes using two feet to bring the car to a stop.after the car was stopped, she put the car in neutral with rpm's racing at 7500, she then disengaged the power. She then attempted to restart the vehicle 4 times and the rpm's were still racing at the same level.she had to to be towed for the amount of $325.00 from nj to pa.it was towed to the dealership.piazza honda told me that she got dirty fuel and it caused a deposit on the throttle body and stretched the cable.they also told me that is she turned the car off it would reset.that was not the case because as stated before the car produced the same response whenever the vehicle was turned on. No deaths - no injuries - no crash but she could of been killed if there was a lot of traffic.thank god this happened after 8:20 p.m. When there was not much traffic.
The vehicle sticks in full throttle and accelerates at a high speed when cruise control is engaged.the dealership replaced a part (part unknown), but the problem recurred. Please provide more details. *ph
While driving on the highway at approximately 55 mph driver applied the cruise control and set it on 55 mph. However, when applying, cruise control vehicle continued to accelerate. Driver had to turn the key off in order to get the vehicle to slow to a stop. Owner contacted the manufacturer, who urged consumer to takevehicle into a dealership. There may or may not be a charge.
Transmission intermittently slips,in motion and idle position--idle speed is erratic--in reverse, car makes a whining noise-windows don't always work
While driving at 40 mph, the throttle stuck, causing engine to race and vehicle would not decrease speed when applying brakes.
Accelerator pedal sticks slightly at intial acceleration.yh
