Takata recall?while driving straight through my neighborhood boulevard i fell asleep, causing me to quickly acceleratte and hit a tree head on approximately 40 mph, according to multiple witnesses and emergency responders. No airbags deployed in the car. My face and body hit the steering wheel, resulting in 4 teeth knocked out, 8 spine disc herniations and injuries, a heart contusion, whiplash, concussion, cracked collar bone, and much bruising, and broken eye glasses, retrieved by an attending neighbor witness. I was told by an attending emt that if the air bags deployed these injuries would not have occurred. When i asked my insurance agent how to retrieve my personal items from the car i was told he car was immediately deemed a total loss and, without my knowledge, my insurance co. Transfered my honda to the wrecking yard to be flattened. I spoke to the accident attending rescue responders and firemen. They said based on the way my car hit the tree head on and the impact speed, the airbags should have deployed and if the airbags were present in the car they must have been defective. I have kept all written paperwork resulting from this accident.
Consumer was involved in a rear end collisionwhile traveling at 40 mph.upon impact, none of theairbags deployed. The srs light was on after the accient jbut the manufacutre refused to inspect the air bag. They just indicated by observation that the way the vehcile was hit that it didn't impact the sensor to trigger the air bag to deploy.the vehicle was involved in another head on collision a year later.upon impact the windshield crack and the interiror rear view mirrow detached. Alsoseveral engine components were mangaled upon impact. The vehicle is totaled.
Srs light has come on 3 times. The first two visits petersen motors reset the system, found nothing. The first time petersen motors suggested it was caused by low battery voltage. Nonsense, they didn't find the problem and the battery is new. They cleared the code and charged $72. After the 2nd visit, i was told if it happens again they would have to replace the driver's airbag. After the 2nd visit the light came back on within 2 weeks. After 3rd incident, petersen motors stated over the phone it is the control unit which would cost about $460 to replace. On each of the 3 occasions, i stopped the car briefly. When i restarted my car, the srs light came on and stayed on. At this time i haven't had this problem fixed. 2 of 4 original firestone tires failed. The 1st failure occurred as i drove the car off the lot - it had a radial pull, causing the car to turn upon acceleration. The 2nd firestone tire failure occurred at about 26,000 miles. After driving several hours at 75 mph on a 95 degree day, there was a bulge in the sidewall. At that time i replaced all 4 tires with a different brand.nlm
In a panic traveling at 70 mph on the highway, the brakes were applied causing the vehicle to spin, the vehicle rolled over once landing on the hood. Vehicle experienced no deployment of airbag's. The dealer has been contacted.
While driving the vehicleboth driver and passenger airbags deployed without any impact. Dlr has seen vehicle.
Air bag restraint system (srs) failed.
The airbag deployed without any accident or activity, i reported it to honda and they said it was not there fault, please let us know if we have any recourse in this situation, thanks
Airbag light is on and won't go off. This means thatairbag won't deploy.took to vehicle dealer, and they saidtherewould be a charge. Consuemr feels this is a safety issue and should not have to pay.
The warning lights are on
Air bag warning indicator came on while driving in the city, just prior to entering onto the highway (approx 25 mph). I'm the only owner and have not had an accident with this car. Took it to a honda dealer who said that it was the driver's side curtain air bag, but the service advisor noted "we have no way to tell you what the actual issue is with the side curtain airbag without taking your car apart which will take several hours..even after we take it apart, this work may require special order parts so we couldn't fix it immediately." they said while this light is on, the airbags don't work-how, at 60k miles, could an airbag be faulty? the dealer asked me 3 times if the car had ever been in an accident to which i repeatedly told them no, and that i am the only owner and bought it brand new. I'm concerned that honda has more airbag issues with later models like my 2007 civic ex as there are many complaints online. This same car has the engine block coverage extended due to a honda recall; the sun visor split (33k mi) and wouldn't go all the way up, i hit my head on this when it broke and it impacted visibility-someone brought a civil suit to get honda to address this. Further, this car's windshield wiper motor malfunctions (my vin is covered with a tech service bulletin) and the wipers stop midway on the windshield impacting visibility--according to the tsb, honda decides whether they will absorb the repair cost for that safety issue (honda never proactively informed me that my vin was affected when the car was still under warranty).at only 5 years old, the ac compressor broke due to poor design ($400 absorbed by me). Given what i perceive as a safety issue re: the airbags and the growing complaints online, it would be great if the nhtsa would do something further regarding later model honda civic airbags and make honda accountable to consumers for safety issues.
Air bags did not deploy during auto collison, injuries to consumers.
Srs light is on and the air bag system is disabled. The consumer feels that this is a manufacturing defect.
My honda is over 15 years old.are the airbags safe?
The contact owns a 1997 honda civic.while driving at various speeds, the srs light would remain illuminated on the instrument panel.the contact did not notice any differences in the vehicle prior to the failure.the vehicle had previously been serviced for the srs issue, but it is still occurring.the vehicle has not been diagnosed by the dealer.the current mileage was 127,583 and failure mileage was 75,000.
The srs indicator light flickered on & off for several days, and now remains on all the time. The dealer says it is a malfunctioning unit that will cost $500+ to replace.the car has only 38000 miles on it, and does not fall under the airbag recall from november '97. Has honda looked into this problem for all of its models?
1997 honda civic-srs light remaining ona lot of what could cause this light to come on is not covered under the safety warranty.just resetting it can cost $100 and there is not a guarantee it will stay off to allow the airbag to function.reading others problems with this there seem to be wide spread issues with the srs system.some of these repairs have cost in excess of $1000.after reading so many questions and complaints about it (for example www.carcomplaints.com), i wonder why it is not a safety recall item.the srs light and problems with the system seem to be in civics, accords, and preludes.
I was driving 50 mph when my air bags deployed for no reason. The explosion was horrendous. I put on my brakes which put my car in a sideways slide almost sending it over the cliff into the river. It was a horrifying experience. The windshield broke and my dash split. There was no impact at all. The air bag broke my new prescription glasses, bruised my face, and cut my lip. My son whom was with me is complaining of pain in his stomach where the air bag hit him.i see many other complains concerning faulty air bags but read honda is not taking responsibility. These faulty bags are a life threatening issue and honda should recall and fix this problem now. Updated 07/25/12 updated ivoq 07/26/12
Frontal collision no deployment of air bags.
Srs light stays illuminated whilevehicle is in motion. Dealer has attempted to correctproblem; however, two weeks laterproblem reoccurred.
Srs light came on 1/24/03 and stayed on. Took to dealer, manchester honda, on 1/28/03 for service and was told srs unit failure code 7-2. I have a 1997 honda civi with 71,464 miles on it. The part that needs replacement is #77960-s04-n81. The part costs $368.70 and the installation charge quoted for me was $72.00. It cost me 85.86 to have the problem diagosed. The service repair man insisted this was not a defective part, i would have to pay for repairs. I've researched your web site and found numberous bulletins detailing failure of the srs system with the 1997 honda civic. I also found recent similar complaints regarding the srs system for 2003 honda civics and 2002 honda accords. Clearly this is a safety defect that honda and nhtsa has known about for some time and there has yet to be a recall. This poses a threat to my personal safety. I was explicity told that until i have this repair done, the control system for the srs would not deploy the airbags in my car should i get into an accident. I am forced to make an expensive repair to a defective honda component that the dealer should be paying for and correcting. And yet they are obviously ignoring the problem and selling 2003 models that obviously have the same defective components. Honda needs to be ordered to begin a recall immediately, since they obviously are not interested in fixing the problem voluntarily.
While driving, andupon coming toa complete stop another vehicle rear ended consumer, however the air bagsdid not deploy. There were minor injuries. Please provide any further information. Please provide vehicle identification number.
I got in an accident by myself when a deer jumped out and i swerved and hit a tree. The air bag blew up and i have burns on my face neck and arm and a gash on my head.i went to the hospital to seek medical attention and showed them my arm. They were shocked to sees third degree burn on my arm. Such a burn that it left a large hole through my sweatshirt. A charred holelike i was set on fire. The nurses and doctors said they had never seen that happen before from an airbag. My car never set fire once. I feel the airbags are defective.
Srs control unit failed.
The contact owns a 1997 honda civic. While parked with theengine turned on, the passenger side airbag independently deployed without warning. The air bag shattered the passenger side glass window. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the contact was informed that the vehicle was performing normally and there were no failure found. The current and failure mileages were 137,000.
Srs lights stays on. Cj
Good day:on 17 march 2020, honda advised me that my 1997 civic is included in nhtsa recall 20v-026, which affects the driver frontal airbag module. In the recall notice, honda said the repair parts are unavailable, and promised to notify me when the defective components become available. More than six months later, i am still awaiting word from honda about when my car can be repaired. My honda dealer says they have no idea when the parts will be available. I therefore wish to issue a formal complaint that honda has failed to remedy this defect within the 60-day reasonable time period specified in the recall notice. Thank you for your consideration.
My honda automobile repair business mentioned mine was the 2nd secondary restraint system (srs) computer replacement on a 1997 honda. They had done this year. The srs unit, model77960-s04-n81 failed after 55,000 miles, disabling my air bags.
This is the third time the srs light has come on.the first time i had to pay to get it fixed and was told nothing was wrong and the unit was reset.the second time the reset it when i took the car in for brakes.after 4 months the light is back on.this originally occured 3 months out of warrenty and lynwood honda would not do anything for me.i feel this is a defect in the car system.
There was no accident, only failure of the srs control unit of my 1997 honda civic dx hatchback (3 door) with 46,000 miles. I'd say it's reasonable to demand that safety equipment be covered for the lifetime of the car.for my safety restraint system (srs control unit for the airbags), which i've *never* used, to cost me $760 to repair is outrageous!it's probably an $80 computer part.
The contact owns a 1997 honda civic. The contact stated that the srs light illuminated. The contact stated that the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign id number: 97v193000 (air bags). The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 96,000.updated 9/9/14 updated 1/20/2015
I got a recall letter saying they don't have my part and i have sixty days to reply but with this virus how and when will they have my part
The srs light keeps on! checked 1 time and got cleared off by honda dealer. 10 ten days later, the light was back on. Check it again and light again? 70 bucks for checking every time. What is a juck! now i drove without the air bag working!
Takata recallthe vehicle was involved in a crash where it hit a guard rail, flipped and caughton fire, neither air bags deployed!! my daughter had to be transported to the hospital with injuries.
Air bag light oninstrument panel has come on and has stayed on. Contacted dealer, and dealer noted that potentially air bags will not deploy or deploy unexpectedly.
1997 honda civic air bag light on. Determined air bag module is bad. Searched the web and it seems thousands of accord, civic and prelude owners are having the same problem. Nhtsa does have recall campaign id number: 97v193000 for passenger side airbag not put in right, how about one for a junk module??
The airbag warning light is illuminated on my 1997 honda civic cx. I took it to the dealer and they reset the light. The mechanic told me that if it comes on again only thing they can do is replace the computer that triggers the airbag at a cost of about $500 including parts and labor. After looking online i saw that many honda are having this problem with srs lights.i guy wrote that he had his replaced three times in as many years and still has this same problem. Other people have reported that the airbags have deployed while they were driving less than 5 mph over a speed bump. Another guy reported that his airbag failed to deploy when he hit a car. In both cases no one was seriously injured but the fact remains that the srs system on these cars are not reliable. Honda of america is washing their hands of these cars. They say they are not responsible for systems that are over 10 years old. Please help us get them to do a recall. We would not mind spending the money but honda will only warrant the repair for one year and then we have to pay all over again. Thanks for your time.
Paid for diagnostic on srs system-computer needs replacing.
Srs light stays on. Dealer says bad controller for airbag system and is not covered by any type of warranty, estimate to repair $350. This is a safety componenent of the vehicle. Like a seatbelt it should work as long as the car runs.
"takata recall" my airbags went off when i was turning and went over a a bump, and cracked my windshield really bad on the passenger side. The srs red light had been on for quite some time before this. When this occurred it blew a fuse and i had to have it towed.i did not file a police report because i only have liability insurance for the car so insurance did not need it. I have also had problems with the wiring and the cruise control would not work and would honk the horn when i tried to use it
Srs light is on and the air bag system is disabled. The consumer feels that this is a manufacturing defect.
Takata recall. The contact owns a 1997 honda civic. The contact received notification of nhtsa campaign number: 20v026000 (air bags) however, the part to do the recall repair was not available. The contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was contacted and provided the contact with a case number. The contact had not experienced a failure. The vin tool confirms parts not available.
Takata recall:on 11/21/2012 my son was seriously injured in a collision with another vehicle that pulled out in front of him on a hwy where the speed limit is 50 mph.my son was able to brake and steer to avoid the collision but still impacted the other car's left rear quarter-panel.as a result of the impact, his airbag deployed but with such force that it separated from the steering column and exited the vehicle.he received major facial lacerations and fractures in addition to an gaping wound in his wrist.he was told by several attorneys that since his car had just passed the statute of repose gate of 15 yr, he could not hope to bring suit against honda/takata.to date, there does not appear to be any effort to extend the recall prior to 2002 for honda vehicles.when the external car damage is compared to the damage inside his vehicle, his extensive injuries, and images of the air bag hardware are studied, there is sufficient reason to suspect the honda air bag's detonation rather than deployment was the major contributor to my son's injuries.i understand the reasoning behind a statute of repose but in this case suspect a design deficiency existed prior to the car's age exceeding the arbitrary 15 yr gate.*dt
Air bag sensor light came on and stayed on all day. Took vehicleto dealership, who informed consumer that there was a defect in electrical system, and it will have to be replaced, or air bags will malfunction in a crash.vehicle owner has been sent a free service reminder for technical problems with on board diagnostic, that causes it to not comply with the federal clean air act.*jg
The contact owns a 1997 honda civic. The contact received notification of nhtsa campaign number: 20v026000 (air bags) however, the part to do the recall repair was unavailable. Honda of greeley (4535 w. 29th st, greeley, co 80634) was contacted and confirmed that parts were not yet available. The contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The contact had not experienced a failure. Vin tool confirms parts not available.
Air bag light indicator flashed, then it stayed on the dashboard. Dealer indicated it will cost $75.00 to diagnose what was the cause of the problem.
The srs came on and will not go off.i contacted honda usa and they said that since it was out of warrenty it was at the dealers discreation if this would be covered.i then received a call from my local honda dealer and they stated that i would have to pay for the labor to find the problem and then they would decided if they would cover the rest under warrenty.i feel that since it so close to the warrenty period and something that should never fail it should be covered under the warrenty just like the seat belts are.
Consumer stated the supplemental restraint warning light illuminated, the diagnostic test revealed system failure and the control module would need to be replaced.
While driving, airbag light illuminated, took vehicle to dealer who stated that control unit was bad and needed replaced. .

The approximate failure mileage was 166,000.

Srs light lit up to this date 11/20/2014.
The srs light stay illuminated while driving. The dealership has inspected the vehicle. The dealer stated that the srs light staying illuminated was caused by internal srs unit failure.
Dealer didnot disclose accident damage prior to sail may have caused air bag failure by improper repair from major accdent before my purchase
Srs light on computer malfunction heard same problem from many owners of same vehicle.
Air bag indicatior kept on all the time.
The passenger side air bag light came on and will not go out, the dealer says it is not a recall item .the gas pedal is very roughand hard to push down feels like it is catching on something the dealer said that there is nothing wrong with it.
The srs light comes on and does not go off, the first time it occured dealer replaced the srs control unit under warranty, however it has happened again and dealer states it is no longer under warranty and they will not cover, even though the dealer diagnosed the problem as being the same thing previously.
While exiting a parking lot in an accelerating right-hand turn, vehicle went over a small curb and both air bags deployed, temporarily impairing the driver's vision and knocking his hands from steering wheel. Vehicle lost control, hit cincrete curb of median, bending rims of three wheels and flattening the tires.
Srs control unit is the electrical / computer part that runs the air bag system and has failed twice in the past 14 months.the "srs" light remains lit at start-up.the replacement part is $360+ alone.i believe this is a problem with these parts in hondas, as my parent's accord has a similar problem and i have found other owner's complaints posted across the internet.american honda (as i am sure other manufacturers are the same) won't stand behind these computer/electrical parts for more than 12 months / 12,000 miles.i believe a vital safety component such as this should be designed and built with warrantee to last longer than the headlights and other non-essential electrical parts.i am sure other honda owners have been victimized, as i have been twice now in 5 years, by this faulty component.
Air bag restraint system (srs) failed.
1- car has had problems with srs light for several years now2- number of things done to fix and still not fixed - this is a completely stock vehicle from the factory- no moods!the dealer says with the srs light on the car absolutely has no airbags that will work.3- changed the battery, took it into a dealer and he reset it, still not fixed. Dealer says they can't do anything about it.

The air bag deployed and apparently burst causing severe eye injury a twelve year old child (my son) who was waering his seat belt.from the initial diagnosis of the ambulance crew to his chief cornea & other eye specialist - all of the damage was caused by the deployment of the air bag.we were struck from the driver's side by a speeding vehicle at an intersection in saginaw michigan.because of the intensive injuries to my son, his care was transfered to the kellogg center, the regional eye trauma & care experts in michigan.according to chris surgeons - he sustained the mostmassive injuries (void of a fatality) surgeons has seen at the regional center.every major part ofo his eye was damaged, the cornea- burned, the iris torn in several places, the lend dislocated & erupted (it has since been replaced), retina scarring, occular bone fractures, lost his upper tear duct, torn, seperated eye lid, and several others injuries internal to the eye and the facial area around his left eye,the left eye was the only eye damaged.my son is still undergoing surgeries, and other restorative medical procedures to restore his vision & his apearance.i tried to contact the honda corporation to no avail.i also contacted the u.s. Dept of transp safety to report the accident shortly after the accident - i was sent a form and spoke with a representative.i am filing this report as an assured way of having this case investigated, noted or looked into, this much damage should not have been done to my child.his physicians agree to this given their history of treating air bag injuries.thus, one could conclude the air bad malfunctioned.i have since discovered scores of articles about the dangers of air bags - it bothers me that the public is made aware of thier dangers to infants but not as they relate to young children.i seek some follow-up t o this problem.the car displayed a made in america sticker on the back.i don't think that matters but i have owned hond

While traveling at 45 mph another vehicle turned in front of consumer, consumer's vehicle hit the other vehicle onpassenger's side.upon impact, none of frontairbags deployed. Consumer states the entire front end of vehicle needed to ve replaced.
Consumer was driving east at approx 45 mph, truck jumped out in front, hit head on other vehicle side, bumper was completely pushed in.airbag did not deploy.due to this defect, consumer hit dashboard with head, hit steering wheel with chest.seat belts were not working at time of incident.
Consumer was involved in a 30 mph frontal collisionin which the driver's or passenger's air bags did not deploy.please give any further details.
I own a 97 honda civic lx 4dr and have been in 3 accidents w/o air bag deployment. In 9/98 i was rear-ended at 40 mph which bent the frame of my car and cost several thousand to repair.honda service said that the airbags would not deploy unless there was a sudden decel and/or frontal impact. A few mos later in 01/99, i was in an accident and the police rpt states that i broadsided a 81 cadillac on the front driver's side at approx 35 mph. The front end of the cadillac was detroyed. I injured my neck, back, and shoulder as the seat belt did not lock when i flew forward. After the accident, i went to honda cars of mesa for body repair. It cost several thousand $, w/ significant front end damage and a bent frame. My air bags did not deploy in this accident.i requested an air bag fcheck and my friend and i were told by the mgr of service that the air bags were ok and the srs knows when to deploy the airbags.he said that the collision was not enough to cause the airbags to deploy; however, i had direct frontal impact at 35 mph. My car was also backed over by a garbage truck in5/99 w/o air bag deployment. In 04/03, i began to have probs with the srs light coming on and staying on. The light was staying on until the car was restarted.within2 wks, my srs light stayed on.i took my car to a honda certified mechanic.he said the srs unit was bad and the code given was 7-2, 7-3 which indicates a bad unit and requires replacement.the part cost was $370. And the labor was $75. The day after the repair, the srs light came on and stayed on. Within 2 mos the part went bad and the unit gave the code 7-2, which indicates replacement w/o diagnostics. He felt the initial part may have been bad and replaced it w/ honda's parts warranty, but if it happened again, there was another cause for the malfunction.the prob happened the day after i left the shop and the light is on again during most trips. My mechanic stated that the dealer will need to contact their tac.
Dual airbags deployed during front endcollision.impact from driver's side airbag caused open wounds/burns from chin to chest, force of passenger's airbag shattered front windshield, vehicle at body shop, driver hit another moving vehicle, wet weather.
Consumerwas in an accident and airbags didnot deploy.another vehicle cut in front, and consumer lost control. Vehicle hit sand barrels and side rails.
While stopping at stop sign both front airbags deployed without warning or reason.contacted dealer, and dealer stated anti-freeze dripped on sensor, and made airbag deploy.please add vin.
Vehicle was involved in a rear end collision, it forced vehicle into a 360 degree turn, and head on collision into a concrete barricade. Vehicle swung around again, and neither air bag deployed. Feel free to provide any further information.
The airbag sensor light stays illuminated whilevehicle is in motion. Dealer has set the sensor prior to this incident. Manufacturer will be notified.
The srs light came on and the dealer said my car required a 500 dollar repair. The main unit on my srs failed and honda will not help with the repair cost. I can't afford the repair and honda wont help even though i have fairly low miles.
On august 04, 2004, i visited the honda dealership because the indicator light on the supplemental restraint system (srs) readiness indicator lamp of my honda civic 1997 dx had turned red. When they checked my car, they said that they got a dtc code of 08-5 from the srs module.i was told that it meant srs control unit failure. The dealerships reset the srs unit. A year after, the same condition recurred.i was then told that srs control unit needed to be replaced.if no action were taken, the uncorrected illumination of the srs readiness indicator lamp can hinder the detection of potential vital airbag system operation of components such as airbag module, crash sensor and wiring integrity.the diagnostic service and part costs has deterred me from servicing this recurring problem. The estimated cost of the parts and service is over $800.00.i have never been in any incident or accident wherein the airbags were deployed.i believe that the srs control unit should be guaranteed throughout the life time of the vehicle.i strongly believe that this is a serious safety issue.nowadays, when i drive the car, i do not feel as secure as i did, for i am uncertain if the airbag would deploy at all, in case i get into an accident. When i spoke with american honda's customer representative today, 4/10/2006.i was told that they would do nothing, that i am personally responsible to get it repaired.

Airbag system inoperable. The airbag light came on during routine driving. A check with honda service shows that the airbag module failed. Honda needs to replace the airbag module in order for the airbag system to work at a significant cost to the owner. There are many other people that report a similar problem.
In december 2002, we replaced the air bag sensor/control module in our 1997 after the srs warning system light activated and the computer confirmed the problem.less than two years later, the same problem recurred (august 2004), and american honda is refusing to replace the part ($400+) because the one-year warranty has expired.it took nearly 95,000 miles for the first unit to fail, and less than 20,000 for the second one to fail.this is my third and, will be my last, honda.
The air bag warning light came on while driving, rendering the air bags inoperative in the event of a crash.dealership indicated that this occurred because the srs unit failed. The srs unit needed to be replaced.*sb
My 1997 honda civic srs light has come on 6 times within the past 5 years.each time i brought it to honda service they said it was internal failure and reset it.they claimed it was caused by low battery charge, but then they declared battery was good.finally had to replace the srs module unit. The new unit only has 12 month warranty.isn't the srs unit a safety feature and shouldn't it be covered by lifetime warranty?first incident began in october 2003, followed by oct 2005, nov 2006, jun 2007, sep 2007, and finally in mar 2008.
The srs controller failed and needs to be replaced.
Vehicle has a subtle light that will not go off. It's an indication that the air bags will not deploy. *la
Dt:the contact stated the srs light illuminated on the vehicle.the dealership ran a diagnostic test and determined the srs failed.the contact was the second owner, but stated there have been no prior accidents.
I recently purchased a 1997 honda civic from my sister, who did not realize that the srs light being on was a problem.it has been on for the last 4 years (since about 60k miles).i am looking into having it replaced, but according to my research, honda does not know how to fix it.everything that i have read about this problem indicates that it is a $400+ repair and the repair does not last.they have blamed it on a multitude of things including using a cell phone, a low battery, and a defective part.this makes honda vehicles unreliable and more importantly, unsafe.i have read about this problem on many different makes and models of honda vehicles.
Srs indicator light will not go off.dealer (honda of new rochelle) has seen car on issue three times.first time simply reset it.issue recurred within 10 months. Second time dealer replaced the srs control unit and charged me approximately $550.one week later the issue recurred.dealer now says the battery has a low charge and that is the cause.they want to replace the battery for over $150.*la
Srs light stayed on. Dealer stated "bad unit", cost unit:$495.00labor:$119.25mileage:43,203this is my third honda, but the first to give any problems. Although i could find no recall issued about srs units in honda's, i did find 47 complaints filed with nhtsa(not counting mine). I didn't include numerous reports of failure to deploy airbags, airbags deploying w/o cause and airbags deploying w/o inflating. I find it very disheartening that a company such as honda would hide a obviously dangerous safety defect from it's consumers.
1997 civic dx srs readiness indicator illuminated. ***nar***the vehicle was taken to the dealer.the problem was diagnosed a srs control unit failure.the dealer reset the srs unit.a year later the light illuminated again.the vehicle was taken back tot he dealer who indicated that the srs control unit needed to be replaced.
The air bag light illuminated,a recall97-v-193 had been issued on similar makes and models, however, consumer was informed the damaged part was not involved in the recall.*jg
While driving the srs senor light constantly stays on. Consumer had vehicle diagnoise by dealership who informed her that the srs computer senor was bad which may cause air bags not to deploy in an accident. Ts
The contact owns a 1997 honda civic. The contact stated that the srs sensor illuminated in the vehicle more than once. The dealer remedied the failure. The manufacturer was notified. The approximate failure mileage was 96,102.
The srs (airbag) computer stopped working on my 1997 honda civic ex for no reason and after no incident.i have been told by the service department that this means that the airbags may or may not deploy in case of a crash.the computer part number is 77960-s04-n81.the price for the part alone is $697 and labor is an additional $150.i contacted honda and they offered me a 25% discount because i had maintenance performed by the dealer.they told me that they could not offer any more since records indicate that i only own one honda and because they could only show me going to the dealer for the past two years for maintenance.i was told that there was a limited lifetime warranty on the seat belts, but not the airbags.the case manager (carolyn) told me that they didn't even have to offer me this.when asked why the seat belts were covered and not the airbags (which are an important safety feature of the car and required by federal law), she said that it was a business decision.since honda sells so many civics and since the car is durable enough to be driven for many miles, i believe that there is a substantial safety risk to many people if even a small fraction of these computers go out.combined with the fact that the repair is a third of the trade in value of the car and honda's unwillingness to adequately remedy this problem, i believe that this is an important issue that needs to be addressed immediately.
Srs (airbag) light came on and stays on.his happened about 4 months ago during normal use.i need to get this fixed.
While driving, the vehicle strucka pot hole, and the passenger's side air bag deployed.however, the driver's seat belt did not lock, and passenger struck his face on the steering wheel.the passenger air bag did not open and the check engine and the air bag light remained on. *sc
Erratic operation of air bag depoyment whenvehicle bumped a curve (hard enough to bend the front rim).passenger's side depoyed properly, butdriver's side came out and just hung downsteering wheel.dealer was notified. Feel free to provide any further details on this matter.
I had car computer problems, air conditioning problem and paint on car body is cracking. These problems started to happen gradually, computer problems happened while i was driving on the road in the city;the paint started to crack for many years and the car looks miserable. The air conditioning broke down during a summer time, when i had no money to repair it and had to suffer due to the high heat weather.there is also a crack somewhere in the engine, not sure where, which can make things worse.
The contact owns a 1997 honda civic.while attempting to exit the vehicle, both of the rear electric doors would not open.the contact took the vehicle to the dealer and they stated that an inspection would cost $150 and the repair would cost $500.the vehicle has not been repaired.the dealer information was unavailable.the current mileage was 126,000 and failure mileage was 125,000.updated 01/11/08.*ljupdated
Air bag sensor light came on and stayed on all day. The vtec-e on my 1997 honda civic hx is not engaging at the proper times which is not only an annoyance when driving, but also a safety hazard when it engages at low speeds (which it should not do) in traffic launching you forward into the back ends of other vehicles.has caused (2) rearenders.
I have also had problems with the wiring and the cruise control would not work and would honk the horn when i tried to use it
While driving the vehicle, the engine just quits. There is no stuttering, stalling, or engine misfires, it quietly just quits. The radio, heater fan, brake lights still work but not the signal lights.this also happens when starting the vehicle.the problem started 1-2x a month and over a period of 7 months has now become an everyday occurrence.
Engine light came on now car will not start. No fault or cel codes.
I have a 97 civic dx and several times while driving the car will turn offand is to hard to control the wheels, when turns offthere is no engine lights & the car dies totally andi try to turn the car onbut it wont start i need to wait for about 5 minutes then i can turn the car again. I have been doing some research in the internet and it seems that i'm not the only one who have this problem and it seems to possible could be the ignition switch.

When driving headlights and insturment panal get really bright and go back to normal like they flicker bright have changed both alternator and battery and still does it.
Vehicle would not start in november of 2000. Run channel and regulator for the power window was replaced.hood release snapped off when consumer pulled it.consumer is requesting partial reimbursement for the repairment of the alternator.

Horn button placement design is poor, due to delay in locating button two accidents occurred.
Vehicle was accidentially shut off due to design of ignition key system, easily engaged without knowledge.
The contact owns a 1997 honda civic. The contact stated that when the key was removed from the ignition the engine remained on. The contact had the ignition switch repaired four years ago for the identical failure. When the vehicle was in the park position it would roll backwards if the emergency break was not on. The manufacturer stated that this was an issue with the 1999 through 2004 honda civic not her year, make and model vehicle. The failure mileage was 85000. The current mileage was 134000.
Consumer stated had ignition switch recall 02v120000 remedied on 10/4/02.since then can start vehicle fine, but intermittenly have to use excessive force to turn vehicle off.switch will not turn. Ts
The design/location of the ignition switch almost caused an accident, the vehicle turned off while driving.
Hansel honda stated two months ago when we had the engine check light problem, that it was a faulty engine module.the car has had two start problems for which hansel honda stated it may be due to the module but was still back ordered.with the second start problem, one of the service staff stated it may be the module problem but stated they were having problems getting the part.the other service person that very same day, stated it probably wasn't the module and that the part was still on backorder due to high incidence and requests other than hansel honda for replacement module for the defective part.he stated they couldn't guarantee whether the problems with the engine starting was due to the module or not, but that the car was safe to drive for now. Hansel honda stated the manufacturer was a problem not them and still couldn't determine when the part would be available.i asked them if so many hondas had been reported to the dealers, why they haven't been recalled.he said he didn't know.as mentioned earlier, it has been 2 months since the part was initially ordered.

Scott honda mailed a post card to my home in feb 2ooo for car recall. Upon calling hoinda the lease agent put me on hold and spoke to the service dept.she then proceeded to say that i would not have engine problems until my car reached betwen 60,000-70,000 miles. She stated that the engine would rumble and the engine light woudl come on due to faulty wiring, etc.i expalined that my car was service and the engine lihgt came on during my inspection and that i spent 450.00 on getting my car rewired etc.. She explained that there was something else wiht the car and it would occur at a higher milage and to bring my car in.i asked her waht to due in case i don't experience problems or if i lost my recall postcard .she stated that it was no problem and to call the dealership mgr. And that he would honor the situation and give me a new postcard.. Upon my enigine light turing on...and my contacting honda serive the gentleman was rather scarastic and rude and accused me of not taking car of my car as well as stating that he knew of no recalls for a 1997 civic.would someone be so kind as to investigate this situation?? hondas are reliable cars and the engine should not have probelems @ 3 years old.in addition, my air conditioner and heating system only lasted approx. 2/12/ years.there must be something electronically wrong with this model.thank you for your assistance. Sincerely, deidre l. Adore.
Date and mileage are approximate.this was my wife's car which i very seldom drove.not long after the car was new, i drove it and the following happened (the date i've listed is only approximate):i was driving at about 20mph andhad to stop for a red light.i took my foot off of the accelerator and stepped on the brake pedal.the engine rpm did not slow down to idle, and tried to keep moving the car forward.i turned off the ignition to keep from having a crash.this is not an accelerator pedal problem as i shall explain later.i called the honda dealer and was told that if it happened again to bring the car in.i told my wife what to do if it happened to her.either it never happened to her or it did and she never told me.my wife died at theend of january 2015.since then, i have sometimes driven her civic.about 2-3 weeks ago the same problem occurred:i had driven several miles and had to stop.the engine rpm did not slow!i immediately put the automatic transmission into neutral and the engine rpm immediately slowed to idle.this is not a stuck accelerator problem because, if it were, the engine rpm would have increased when i shifted into neutral.it is not a brake problem unless the brakes are somehow physically or electronically connected to the engine rpm.yesterday, march 4, 2015, the same problem occurred twice again after i had driven only about 3 blocks.in both cases i turned off the ignition to prevent an accident.i had the car towed to the dealer.the dealer could find nothing wrong with the car.i have contacted honda usa about this serious safety problem.note:i have spent almost all of my professional life in the area of safety analysis.
This is car 2. On the 10th of august, i took the saturn in after i had placed the call to [xxx] the gentleman that sold me the saturn, about the car not working properly. I was then given a 1997 honda civic, i resigned what the loan papers and left. I had to pay to transfer the plates from one car to the next. Well it is sad to say that on 8-12-13 the car shut off while i was in the center lane of i95, with 2 children in the car and another adult doing 70 mph. I coasted to the shoulder of the highway, [xxx] is closed on sunday; i waited until monday i placed a call to [xxx]. I spoke with [xxx]and explained what had happened. Today 10-15-2013 i got up and called [xxx]. I then decided to go to the shop. When i got there all of the parties where there, and i asked what would happen with the car. I was informed that they could fix the engine for about $1500-$1800. That was not an option for me as i felt that there is no way that i should have to replace a whole engine after only having it for two months. I was told that the dealers?? hands were tied. I was past my warranty of 30 days or 1000 miles.keep in mind i was past my warranty the first time as well. I was told that there is no way for them to tell if the engine is bad before they put it out there to be sold. The dealer then began to tell me that in a 60 day period i drove the car 4000 miles i replied what does that have to do with anything. I told him there should be no reason that i have to replace a whole engine within a two month period used car or not. All i wanted was a reliable car that is safe. This business didn't provide that. I went in to resolve this matter face to face, as well as emailed the owner. All i wanted was a reliable car that works properly, and i don't want to lose the money that i have already put in to what i thought i was getting in the first place, which is a safe reliable car.information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

After vehicle warms to operating temp. And the rpms are between 2000 and 3000. The vehicle bogs down, releasing the throttle or pushing in the clutch pedal and the vehicle idle is normal. If the throttle is pushed down and the rpms rise, the problem goes away.when this occurs the vehicle can bog down and then straighten out the speed will resume to where it should be.this is an intermittent problem with no rhyme or reason associated with it.i have had the vehicle in the shop several times and have asked countless number of people.internet search had shown that other people are having the same problem and no one has an answer as to the cause or the relief.this has been happening as long as i have owned the car and i noticed it the first time i drove it.i bought is used and it had no warranty.vehicle needed exhaust manifold and tires when i bought it.nothing else was mentioned.i feel this is a hazard, as it is unpredictable and it has occurred in parking lots, as well as on the open road.i have read other people having this problem and it seems to be only with the honda 1.6 liter sohc vtec16y8 engine.this is the engine that i have in my civic ex.*nlm

I had the checked at kolbe honda when the check engine light came on.i thought the porblems related with the check engine would be covered by mfg warranty it was not.after i have learned that three sensors defected as found in diagnostic process.i went on to replace all three sensors and the check engine light still comes on.something is not right, i do plan on making a appointment with kolbe to further more on diagnostic and determine if this is covered by manufactory recall or warranty coverage.i also have a transmission problem, after 45 minutes of driving on city streets.the transmission starts to slip or hesitate at take off, from second gear to fourth shift speed also changes.like in the beginning the shift patterns appears normal, 1st gear (0mph to 25mph) 2 gear (25mph to 35mph) 3 gear (35mph to 45-50 mph) 4 gear (direct drive), after 45 minutes of driving it is reduced by 10mph at gears.i can't afford rental car if the dealership requires to hold the vehicle for more than one day.my wife and i and my kids carpool in this car daily, it is our only transportation. Igniter problem, vehicle is issued emission warranty extension due to problem.yh
Since oct '02, i have had my car in and out of the dealership due to the recall for emissions. Each time, the check engine light has come on, i have taken it to the dealership and had the problem fixed. The first time, the computer went bad and was replaced. The second time, the o2 sensor went bad and the car stalled out on a busy interstate in nc where construction is being done and there are no shoulders to pull off on.i believe honda should replace the entire emissions system covered under the warranty instead of costing their consumers time and a lot of aggravation by fixing the problems one at a time. This will absolutely be the last honda i own due to this one situation. I'm sick of spending time in the dealership having to wait for them to tell me what the current problem is. A car that is 6 years old should not have to have the whole emissions system replaced in the first place. This is ridiculous and someone needs to fix it.
I brought my 1997 honda civic in for a recurring problem which was covered under an warranty issued by honda for resetting an emissions problem in 1997 civics. This is the seventh time i had to have this light reset. The warranty was for up to 150k miles. This time i had 152k miles. I was told from now on i would have to pay a $85 diagnostic fee plus repair. This is unfair as this is a recurring problem that has not been corrected. As this occurs on average every 12,000 miles i could have to pay this diagnostic fee of $85 plus parts for a recurring problem that has not been fixed. Note that a coworker who has the same car had brought the car in nine times. This dealer replaced the catalytic converter on her car and the light has not come back on. When i brought the car in for the repair above i was told that honda would not repair the car until all the non-honda parts in the area affected were replaced. The total of these parts was $227. This would be in addition to the $85 diagnostic fee. I was told by the service manager that they would not even look at the car until the non-honda parts were replaced. I asked if they could reset the engine light as they had in the past and was told no. I asked for the car back and did not replace the parts. I was charged the $85 diagnostic fee. The light is now off and the car runs fine. I have driven another 6,000 miles since that time and the light has not come back on. Theowner's manual states that genuine honda parts are recommended; it does not say they are required. The owner's manual should state explicitly that the use of honda only parts is required or dealer may not service the car. I feel this is a violation of my right to patronize a certified service facility. If extended this type of policy could be ruinous to non-dealer service facilities. I opened a case with american honda and they said that dealers are independently owned and operated and they could do nothing. This whole policy exploitsthe public.
While driving, pipes from catalytic converter fell off, consumer states muffler now needs replaced.firestone tires size 14, dot number wz7jmnb466, replaced under 20000 miles.
Shield at bottom of the catalytic converter is loose and coming apart.dealer states they will be replaced.consumer feel vehicle may overheat and catch fire if shield is removed.
The engine light came on and i took it to the shop to determine the cause.they told me that the exhaust manifold had cracked.they also told me that this is a common occurrence for the honda civic.the cost of repair will be over $600.00 provided that this did not damage the oxygen sensor.if that is the case, then the cost will be an additional $100.00 to $200.00 more.given that this is a common occurence, i felt that it may warrant further reporting to your organization.
My engine light came on due to the fact that i needed to replace my o2 sensor.while attempting to replace it we noticed a crack in the exhaust manifold.when we took it to the shop we were told that this was a common problem with honda civics.apparently they see the manifolds start to crack around 110,000 miles.the cost was nearly $700 to replace it.
Without warning muffler rusted out, dropped down and was dragging on the pavement.this car has been kept in a garage for 2 years and in a carport for 3 years.

Exhaust manifold is cracked and leaks.manifold makes noise and exhaust gas can be smelled in the passenger compartment.this does not comply with fmvss requiring all exhaust gases be vented behind the passenger compartment. *nlm
The check engine light illuminated, the dealer informed consumer the manifold was cracked and it had deteriorated the catalytic converter. Please provide any further information.
The driver of the vehicle had noticed that the output of the air conditioner had been diminishing over several weeks. Then one day, a loud and rattling sound came from under the hood when the air conditioner was on. Several people looked under the hood briefly for the source of the noise with no success. Later in the day the owner of the car parked it in his garage and begin to inverstigate the problem. With the motor on and the hood up, the owner could see no clear source of the noise. He returned to the driver's seat at which time a loud explosion occured accompanied by a cloud of refrigerant. A later investigation revealed a large opening in the forward face of the air compressor that had been the result of an explosion. One large piece remained in the cavity while several other pieces were strewn on the floor. The car was driven to the dealer who obtained permission to replace the a/c system under warranty. The potential for serious injury to anyone peering under the hood at the time ofthis explosion is obvious. The dealer was quick to have the system replaced with no delays.

After highway driving 2.5 hours, smoke appeared from under hood and car misfired repeatedly.air conditioner system non-functional; hall honda attributes to cooling fan failure but is reluctant to repair under extended warranty claiming problem is related to previous accident damage three years ago although another manager from same dealership disagrees.
Headlights have not and will not operate on low beams. Only on highbeams and even after factory replacement. Blinkers do not operate correctly and seem to change timing pattern when rear blubs are changed for a short time. One blinks at a different time than the other except when the flashers are on. It blinks faster in idle at at stop light but as soon as you accelerate it slows down. These are the amber side headlights but on highbeams amber doesn't work correctly. My vin however does not show up onhe recall. How can i get this repaired? i've had the car since 1999 and never received any notification except when my mileage maintenance is due. I'm concerned about the airbag issue as well but have no way of knowing how to get it checked and if needed replacement bags and lights put in.

I have had numerous problems with my power windows in my 1997 honda civic ex.the windown will only go back up halfway and gets off track, it has been in the shop several times.i finally placed the window regulator and it worked for about a week and then got off track again.i am signle female and have to pay everytime to get it back on track.i have spent about $200.00 on getting it looked at, put back together because i do a lot of travel with my job.i know two other people (models 2003 & 1997) who have simialr problems.a mechanic told me that the window regulator has a mal-function.i love my honda and mechanically it has been a great car except for back tires locking up this past winter but i think that was due to cold weather.i plan to purchase another honda but my window is an aggravation.i know so many with similar problems and was wondering if honda has initiated a recall process or if there are any other recalls on that car/model.thanks-lena
Passenger's side door cannot manually or byusing the electronic door locks to be opened.consumer tookvehicle to dealership, and they wanted to replaced everything. The dealer has fixed the door.
Vehicle would not start in november of 2000. Dealership testedbattery to see if this wascause.mechanic replaced battery, and vehicle still would not start.mechanics then replacedentire alternator, and this correcteddefect.there was approximately 28,000 miles onalternator when this occurred. Run channel and regulator for the power window was replaced.hood release snapped off when consumer pulled it.consumer is requesting partial reimbursement for the repairment of the alternator.
This vehicle is a lemon -- defective throughout.major problem is a transmission that has failed twice -- once being replaced by the manufacturer only after two years of complaining about the problem, being unable to drive any distances, and after numerous times i paid to have the problem unresolved.since it was replaced in july 2001, i began complaining again about problems in may of 2002, only to get the same run around again.costing me money out of my pocket for their defective cvt transmission for which they refuse to acknowledge their defect.finally got it fixed and the warranty extended for the second time, but in the meantime, check out the vin numbers on the nhtsa website and you'll many other honda owners with transmission problems and very similar vin numbers.late fall 2002 to winter 2003 driver side door lock failed and almost immediately after that was fixed the driver side window failed.i had to drive down the freeway in the rain to get home with a window i could only pull up half way.but to top things off, i have to replace the alternator this month.worse of all, my car was experience symptoms that were apparently attributed to the alternator back in march 31, 1999service bulletin98-029.however, honda never notified the vehicle owners.they just played the odds that the majority would fail outside of warranty and they wouldn't have to pay a dime.it amazes me that our government allows auto manufacturers to get away with this type of business practice.just because a part failure may not cause an accident doesn't mean it's not dangerous.if i'm commuting 100 miles a day, as i have been for the past several months, and my car broke down who knows where, i could very well be in danger as a single women traveling a lone.i need to be able to count on my vehicle, which i have gone out of my way to insure was always properly serviced.i can not trust honda and will never buy another one.
After the r & r main shaft was replaced, the check engine light illuminated again.*ph months after the vehicle was purchased the check engine light illuminated.it was determined by the computer diagnostic test that the r & r main shaft cam sensor needed to be replaced.the sensor failed three more times after it was initially replaced.upon further inspection the technician found that the oem drum had a crack in it and that was what caused the sensor to fail.
Driving at a speed of 40 mph, then the car went into limp mode and check engine light came on with codes po700 and po715, took to transmission business, could not find the cause of the problem. This problem is still present. Recently found a service bulletin from honda about this defect on the transmission.
Brakes failed to stop car as it was coming to a halt, rolling forward at about 2mph.brake pedal was floored, transmission shifted into park, and engine turned off...still kept rolling forward, as if being pushed.only thing not tried was emergency brake.ended up hitting car in front on both incidents.road was dry the first time, wet the second.cruise control not on in either incident.honda mechanic could find nothing wrong that would cause this.

Transmission problem detected and confirmed by gresham honda.seems to be a major problem for 1997 honda civic owners.honda acknowleged premature tranny failure and offered to pay half for replacement.car was given back to me while part is being ordered and while driving today from a stop light on a hill car would not go into gear and started to slip backwards.luckily by flooring it i was able to prevent backwards slide into vehilce behind me but feel someone needs to contact honda and start a recall on this model for a complete transmission replacement.in my case they have agreed to cover half of the repair cost to install a remanufactured transmission but i am not satisfied with this offer and feel you could be looking at many more accidents and possible injuries by the sudden jerking from stop while car tries to go into gear.please research this immediately and prevent thousands of people from being injured by this known defect that is not being addressed correctly.
When pressing on the gas petal, it feels rough and notchy. It's hard to accelerate smoothly. Started to notice the problem at about 85,000 miles. Then, when i was on the freeway the engine light came on. I took it to scott robinson honda in torrance and they said the problem was probably my diagnostics system. They informed me that is was covered by honda extended warranty. After my car was in the shop all day, the technician informed me that it wasn't my diagnostics system, but my transmission. He said that the computer's diagnosed code was(po715), which means that the mainshaft speed sensor failed. He said that since that part is inside the transmission, they felt i should have it replaced. They wanted me to spend $3,500.00 on a rebuilt one to replace mine. I asked him if my car would be ok to drive around without replacing it, he said he didn't know. It could die on me in a week, or in a year. So far, my car is still running. I have never missed a required service date. My engine light still occasionally comes on, and i have to disconnect the battery each time to reset the computer so it will go off. The gas petal still feels rough when i press on it from a complete stop. I told honda about the recall #99i002000 (vehicle speed control) and asked them if they would replace my throttle cable. Honda informed me that there is no such recall on a 1997 honda civic. I printed out the info from your website and faxed it to them. I am still waiting to hear back. *nlm
Transmission starts slipping at approximately 50 mph.vehicle has a clean history and hasnt been driven hard.i have been contacted by other people with the same car and identical pproblems.this is obviously far to few miles on the car for a problem of this nature since it cannot be repaired and replacement costs are in excess of $5000.honda refuses to assist me with this and i think it warrants a recall or at least some kind of investigation into their product.
Took car in for 60000 service at dealership and within two weeks my v-tech transmission broke down on the freeway. Honda does not want to recognize that this specific part is defective. These v-tech transmissions need to be recalled and replaced at no charge. There are many more honda civic owners that know what i am talking about! justice will prevail!
When the vehicle is in low speed andupon accelerating vehicle jerks. Vehiclewas not included in recall 99i002000 due to vin.*ml
Each time i am stopped and the car is in drive the idle fluctuates rapidly between 0 and 1000 rpm. When the gas is pressed the car will jerk into drive and while driving the transmission will slip.
I own a 1997 civic hx. I did research and there are so many defective cvt transmissions. The transmission was only available for this model. People just don't put the complaints on this site. I was told to do so by honda. 90% of this model on the road have all had their transmissions rebuilt and fail in the early stages of the cars life. Why hasn't honda resolved this issue? it fails to go into reverse and fails to sometimes go into drive. If the percentage were low, then i'd understand that it isn't a wide spread issue. But the number of cars is staggering when i go onto forums and even google the problem. And the ones that have been rebuilt sometimes have a problem with the speed sensor in the transmission and the speedometer fails to read the speed of the car. If i'm the only person who's going to complain about this, i'll make sure to post the link in forums.
Not even thirty days ago i purchased a new/used vehicle from a used car dealership in brattleboro, vt.my 30 day/1,000 mile warranty just ended a few days ago, and i am now having transmission problems with my automatic honda civic ex.i have read several other complaints on this same item in the 97 civics.my whole family owns hondas and they are usually reliable cars.this problem should not be occurring with only 62,000 miles on this car.this is rediculous and i am very upset.i have just started to deal with the problem, but assume i will end up paying for it myself.honda really needs to take care of this issue with this type of car.since it holds it's value i paid a good amount for this car and it's trade in is pretty high, too.this is a problem that needs to be addressed!

I have a 1997 honda civic ex coupe automatic transmission with 95,900 miles when the transmission problem started. One dayi noticed my car was hesitating when i pressed the accelerator but did not put a lot of attention to it. Then soon after i noticed the check engine light turn on. So i decided to take my car to my local honda dealer (rock honda). They reset the check engine light, then told me that theproblemwas the transmission and if it turns on again that i would need to replace the transmission. The light turned on went back to rock honda , they recommended me replace the transmission and mentioned to me there is no recall on the a/t or warranty , the estimate was $2900 for the repair. So i decided to get a second opinion, and they told me the same thing the a/t needs to be repaired! i ended up repairing it costing me $2608.11 ouch. I believe honda should have taken responsibility andnotify the millions of customers that own honda civics andtell them about this major repairby issuing a recall. I feel honda should reimburse all their customers who unknowingly have had to fix their automatic transmission just like i have. Now i'm wondering if i should ever buy a honda again! please help.thank you.*la
I fought for 2 years about a bad ctv transmission in a 1997 honda civic hx which i purchased new. I was in and out of the dealership at my expense on a continual basis.they finally agreed to replace the transmission after many visits and much money out of my pocket for rental cars andunnecessary services that never corrected the problem.honda did agree to give me an extended warranty of 7 years or 75,000 miles.the transmission was replaced with a remanufactured transmission in july 2001.i did not want a remanufactured transmission or a ctv transmission.i believe the design of the transmission is defective, but i was given no choice.in may 2002 i started reporting problems with this replacement transmission -- less then a year after it was installed.like the first transmission, the problem is intermittent, the dealers could not reproduce the problem.i just had to drive the car until it got so bad there was no way they could miss the problem -- just like with the first transmission.well, finally as of august 1, 2003, they confirmed the transmission was the problem and that several parts have to be replaced.in the meantime, while waiting for the parts, i'm stuck driving a car over 100 miles a day to commute to work.ultimately the problem i have is the transmission is bad.period!it's a bad design or i would not have had two of the same transmission type failing in the same car. Wheni was looking at this car to purchase the salesman told me this ctv transmission was so great that it was going to be in all of the honda accords starting the next model year.that never happened, i wonder why!i feel very strongly after reading many similar complaints filed with the nhtsa this model year transmission should be under defect investigation.it won't take much to show that the design itself is defective and honda has hung owners out to dry and refuses to admit their error.

Consumer's passenger's side seat belt does not accomodate her size. The driver side belts fit her just fine. She had to have the vehicle stopped due to the belt tightening up. The belt causes her to lose her breath due to tightness.

1997 honda civic, unit 1 was driving up to lane 5 exit 151 on the ohio turnpike.unit 1 was approaching the toll booth when the brakes on the car failed.unit 1 steered into and struck the crash barrier between the lanes.this action was done to prevent striking another vehicle. Bf according to the police report, the brake pedal went down to the floor. Also, there was fluid leaking from under the vehicle. (ohio traffic crash report # 10-0098-90)updated 04/22/11 updated 06/17/11 the consumer stated he does not own the vehicle. It was a dealer vehicle being transported to an auction. Updated 09/19/11
The front rotors have now twice failed in 21,000 miles, due to excessive warping.the first failure occurred at 9,000 miles; the second began at approximately 20,000 miles and became increasingly more severe.honda has provided no colorable explanation for why this would occur.with respect to driving, the local honda dealer claims that this poses no safety issue.i respectfully disagree.the warping has resulted in severe shimmying in the car (and, at some speeds, a hard and sudden pull) upon application of the brakes, affecting both steering and stopping, and overall handling.despite the car's relatively low mileage, the local honda dealer (sf honda) has deemed this to be a "regular" wear and tear item, and thus only machined down the rotors to resolve the most recent warping.i have never heard of (or experienced) such rotor warping in 15 years of driving.i am also confirming by letter (copied to the dealer and the manufacturer) the substance of this questionnaire.i further note that a technical service bulletin has previously been issued with respect to the 1997 civic's brakes.

Repeated warping of brake rotor with severe vibration at highway speed whenever brakes applied. Turning (resurfacing) rotor only solves problem for 10,000 miles. Dealer wouldn't cover under warranty & insists vibration does not affect safety. I do not believe this, as steering wheel jerks violently at higher speeds.
Brake rotors failed two time in 20,000 miles, first repair at 9,000 miles, rotors warped causing extreme vibration while braking. *mjs
Rotors have warped repeatedly, i only noticed due to the pulsation when i applied the brakes. Seems to be consistently happening every 25,000 to 30,000 miles.i have a co-worker who bought the same make and model 30 days before we did who is experiencing the same problem.he has had to have his turned 3 times, and finally bought replacement rotors at 90,000 miles.if this is not caught by the owner, or during a routing inspection, the brake system may fail to function properly, resulting in crashes and possible fatalities.
Brake rotors needed to be replaced 4 times within 45,000 due to poor rotor design.
While driving, the consumer applied the brakes and they hesitated to stop, which resulted in a front collision.the vehicle was totaled.the dealer had been notified.the problem was diagnosed as the master cylinder. Scc

For last 1-1/2 years (at mileage about 30000) steering wheel bcomes tight and gives click noise only when codl temp about 30. After driving say 1/2 hour and as the temp rises steering returns to normal. Ultimately risky to drive, steering assembly was replaced on 10/12/2000 for the cost of about s1000.00. Per the honda dealership such failures occurs around 100,000 mileage or more. American honda consumer dept does not take responsibility for this manufacturing defect.

I had car computer problems, air conditioning problem and paint on car body is cracking. These problems started to happen gradually, computer problems happened while i was driving on the road in the city;the paint started to crack for many years and the car looks miserable. I was driving on the 101 califonia highway (northbound) in an uphill section near agoura hills, when suddenly we heard a sound like "clack" twice. I was traveling on the middle lane and signaled to my right so i could pull out of the road. Then, there was this huge sound, and i felt the passenger's rear side tire blow up. I almost lost control of the car but was able to pull out of the road. Neither me nor my wife & 7 month old son were injured. When i got out of the car, i found out the tire's tread had separated and it caused the rear bumper to become deattached. I changed the tire and put the spare one.

The accelerator pedal feels rough or notchy when you press it. The car does not respond properly when traveling at low speeds and are required to move the accelerator pedal to make slight speed adjustments. This is the same problem described for 1996 honda civic. I have it on my 1997 civic. Honda will not correct the problem on my 1997 civic. I am concerned that this is a serious saftey hazard. If the throttle cable sticking problem becomes worse, it could cause the throttle to stick wide open.
I am continually experiencing the issue listed in campaign id 99i002000 on my 1997 civic. The defect report indicates that 1997 civics are covered. When i call honda to arrange resolution of defect, they tell me only 1996 civics are covered. This is frustrating considering i am experiencing the issue and 99i002000 lists my year. I'm nervous that the roughness of the accelerator pedal will cause me to rear-end someone eventually. Please convince honda that my 1997 should be covered. Thank you.
In 1987 i purchased a new honda accord. Seven and 1/2 years later this is what occurred. I was pulling into a parking space and all of a sudden the car surged forward at a rapid pace and it hit a building. There was damage to the building and the car. No one was injured. I drove the car 3 years after that. Then i gave the car to my son and in 1999 the same thing happened to him with the same car.in 1997 i bought a honda civic (no bells or whistles). Seven and half years later this is what happened. I was parking the car and all of a sudden it surged forward like the last time. I hit the side of a building, turned the wheel to avoid going through the windows of the building, hit another car, then finally the car slowed down, and i put the car in park. Since this has happened to me two times i am petrified to drive my car again. No one was injured, thank goodness. Please do not think i stepped on the gas. This is ridiculous, when parking a car you slow down and put on your brake. As this car was surging forward, i had my brake to the floor. I could not stop what was happening. Please help me with this situation.thank you very much.
When i accellerated the throttle got stuck.

My newly acquired 1997 honda civic has a problem with the gas pedal.it is impossible for me to smoothly accelerate, the pedal has a choppy feeling and is very jerky at slow speeds.when i go to press on the pedal it wont move and then when it does move it moves too far.i looked up the problem and found there was a recall for the problem, however the dealer i talked to and the honda company stated that my car did not qualify.the nhtsa campaign number is 99i002000.the problem is very dangerous in traffic, and i have nearly rear ended people on numerous occasions.i hope there is some way i can get this problem fixed. The problem happens every time i drive the car so the incident date i am going to put is generally when we acquired the car. Thank you.
In 1987 i purchased a new honda accord. About 7-1/2 years later this what occurred. I was pulling into a parking space and all of a sudden the car surged forward at a rapid pace and it hit a building. There was damage to the building and the car. No one was injured. I drove the car 3 years after that. Then i gave the car to my son and in about 1999 the same thing happened to him with the 1987 honda. In 1997 i bought a honda civic (no bells or whistles). About 7-1/2 years later this is what happened. I was parking the car and all of a sudden it surged forward at an uncontrollable speed the same as it did in the 1987 honda accord. I hit the side of a building, turned the wheel to avoid goinig through the windows of the building, hit another car, then finally the car slowed down some and i put the car in park. Since this has happed to me two times i am petrified to drive my car again. No one was injured. Please do not think i stepped on gas.this is ridiculous, when parking a car you slow down and use the brake. As this car was surging forward, i had my brake to the floor. I could not stop what was happening. Please help me with this situation. Thank you very much. I searched the nhts - office of defects investigation - i found 10 incidents of this happening with the 1987 honda accord. What is to say this can also be true of the 1997 honda civic.
While driving the vehicle at any speed the accelerator pedal sticks intermittently and suddenly accelerates.the dealer inspected the vehicle but couldnotduplicate or correct the problem.the consumer was scared to drive the vehicle.please provide further information.*nlm
Whencruise control is set it speeds up to speed before engaging.cruise control on this model is suppose to work this way.consumer states that the vehicle's speed drops very quickly between five and seven mph causing the distance between her vehicle and the one behind to be very close, dealer states there is nothing that can be done.
Dt*: the contact stated there was an accident that occurred with the vehicle due to the interference of the driver's side floor mat with the accelerator. There isa recall #99e015000 pertaining to the accessory driver-side floor mats. The manufacturer has been alerted who refuses to honor the recall. The contact expressed that themanufacturer should be responsible for the accident because of the recall.
Gas pedal sticks and automobileaccelerates. No accidents yet.
Accelerator pedal feels rough and notchy when pressed.unable to accelerate smoothly.
Aftervehicle started running accelerator pedal became stuck to the floor, causingvehicle to accelerate to speeds over 100 mph.withboth feet on the brakes, driver put vehicle inneutral while pulling over to the shoulder safely. The dealer is aware of the problem. The dealer was not able to find thecause of the problem.
Gas pedal gets stuck under the floor mat during application. Dealer refuses to replace the mats. *
Accelerator pedal is hard to push when moving at low speeds or sitting in traffic, and is very dangerous because you have to push on the pedal so hard, the car jumps forward in traffic.
Vehicle suddenly accelerated at a very high speed because of the gas pedal getting stuck to the floor. Consumer had to keep hitting the pedal until it eventualy released. Dealer has been contacted.
On saturday, may 8th 2004, when i was coming home from my college graduation, i slightly accelerated in my 1997 honda civic ex from 25 to 35 mph on 26th street in minneapolis, mn around 5:30 mph. For some unseen, odd and possessive reason, my gas pedal got stuck to the floor and began to accelerate to 65 mph on a 30 mph road. Normally ive never heard of this happening and have always been a fan of honda automobiles and products. I have never been in an accident and have a clean driving record. Thank god there wasn't any traffic, because for 6 blocks i've never been so scared in my life. While i was driving, my car was red lining (because of the blown speed sensor or throttle gauge according to the dealership that fixed my vehicle), it caused me to question why i drive. As i came across a fairly busy road, i tried to slow the car down by pressing as hard as possible on the brake and putting the automatic transmission into neutral (which did slow the car down slightly), but only to 10-15mph. I was then forced with hitting and possibly injuring/killing people on the forthcoming street in minneapolis (26th and hennepin), but instead was able to use a dumpster in a pre-existing alleyway as a buffer to slow my car down to a safe speed where i could pull the e-brake, put the vehicle into park and then turn the car off. I do have insurance and wasn't injured, but i will need a new bumper, front bumper side skirt and new rim/tire totaling over $2000. I'm trying to find if anyone knows of this problem or of any possible recalls/defects? as this is a manufacturers error as per the company who fixed my honda (town and country dodge in hopkins, mn), i am very nervous about purchasing other honda automobiles as is my family and friends that i have spoken with. My civic was kept in flawless condition, was given all mechanical updates based on scheduled maintenance (as required by honda) and has currently has a youthful 105,000 miles. Thank you for listening.
Intermittentlyaccelerator stuck whendepressed immediately after a stop. A recall has been issued onvehicle's make/ model; however, this vehicle was not included.
The passenger side air bag light came on and will not go out, the dealer says it is not a recall item .the gas pedal is very roughand hard to push down feels like it is catching on something the dealer said that there is nothing wrong with it.
Throttle cable sticks at low speeds - when pressed, it "snaps lose" going to 1/2 throttle, jerking car forward, snapping necks of driver and passengers.is a severe safety problem - could cause an accident by slamming vehicle into back of lead vehicle.ref: campaign id 99i002000.honda dealer says this is not a warranty or product improvement campaign item.
Intermittently vehicle accelerated suddenly and unexpectedly whenaccelerator was applied. Dealer has been notified.

A vehicle speed control recall (nhtsa campaign id number : 99i002000) related to my vehicle is posted on the nhtsa website. I have the specific problem described in this recall. However, both the honda dealer and manufacturer said they did not find such a recall on my vehicle and refuses to pay for the fix.my vehicle make, model and year:make : honda model : civic year : 1997the posted recall make, model and year:make : honda model : civic year : 1997the nhtsa campaign id number is 99i002000i feel the vehicle speed control recall poses a risk to my safety and i would appreciate it if nhtsa would assist me in getting the issue resolved.thank you for your assistance.
Vehicle experiencing problem with speed control which causes vehicle to slow down to 4-6 mph when engaged. Dealer/manufacturer notified, and informed consumer that this condition was normal. Seeking help from nhtsa in this matter, owner believes this is a manufacturing defect. *ml
Each time i am stopped and the car is in drive the idle fluctuates rapidly between 0 and 1000 rpm. When the gas is pressed the car will jerk into drive and while driving the transmission will slip.
Consumer states, can't open the back door from out side. Dealer has been notified. Please provide further information.ts
A design flaw in rear window makes it impossible for the driver to see over the trunk of the vehicle while driving in reverse. Yh
Driver window keeps jumping off track.
I own a 1997 honda civic dx coupe and few weeks ago the driver window collapsed while i was driving on a freeway. The only warning was few days before that the handle was slightly harder then usual. I got really scared and almost crashed hearing this loud noise and not knowing what was happening.
Driver's sideand passenger's side windows were getting stuck down due towindow regulator failure. Dealer has repaired both windows.
Power window broke
I received a new motor for driver's side window, but that seems to be causing me problemsagain.
The power window regulator failed early upon, within warranty.it was repaired by warranty.my power sunroof / moonroof has quit working, i have checked the fuses.i have always had a problem with the front brake rotors warping, part because of my fault i would assume and applying the brakes hard.doesn\\'t help driving on highway 401 in toronto though.all in all, it has been a great car.i have 362,000 km on it now and she still drives like new.
Windows on both sides continue to get off track and will not go up or down.
Power windowfalls off track .
The power windows have failed at least seven times in the five years i have owned the vehicle.the manufacturer persists to put a defective window motor into the vehicle.even though the window has failed so many times, honda nor the service department representatives has corrected this problem.
I had this problem fixed twice in two years..at my expence(over $500)
Driver's side power window has failed twice in 3 months.binds and slips off track.
Driver's side window comes off track and does not have the ability to be rolled up.
Driver's side window kept jumping off the track intermittently. Vehicle been to dealer's shop on three occasions, and problemstill reoccurring.currently informed that track needed replacement due to wear. Please feel free to provide any further details on this matter.
Bad power window regulator and run channel prevented windows from operating correctly.this has happened to the passenger side window as well as the driver side window.
Driver and passenger windows pop off track, bind.
Power windows fail.the incident has occurred at least 7 times in the past five years.service representatives say that one must lubricate the window runners.the owner's manual either fails to mention this maintenance or the existence of such maintenance.the part is always replaced and always fails.
Both windows do not open all the way.in 2000 driver's side window came off the rubber track. Replaced channel and regulator in 2000.11/18/04 driver side window came off the rubber track again.

Design of the sideview mirrors cause visibility problems.
Poor visibility through the left rear view mirror.
Experiencing problem with rearview mirror; whenever mirror is adjusted from day to night and returned back to day, the whole mirror has to be readjusted. Dealer notified, and replaced mirror on two occasions, and problem still occurs. This can lead to a vehicle accident due to adjusting mirror. Asking nhtsa to look into this matter.
Rear view mirror swivels excessively when flipped to reduce headlight glare.mirror needs to be readjusted while driving causing distraction.dealer says it's normal, but i don't think so.this is a serious distraction while driving and causes a potenial hazard.
First the drivers side window would not roll up all the way and it seemed to off of it's track. The vehicle was not in an accident when this problem occured. I notified the dealership i bought it from and was charged almost three hundred dollars to get it fixed. Two months later the same thig happened to the passenger side door and i have had a car mechanic roll the window up for me but it is not fixed.i also know of another person who purchased a 1997 honda civic froma different dealership and his driver side window has done the same thing. I could not find a recall on this model for this problem.
Front end noisy and shakes while driving 65 mph and up. Also, window fell out on driver's side, and door panel is falling off.
Windshield air leak is causing noise.
The window does not roll up or down and seems to be out of its track
Windshield design problem.

I purchased an automobile from equitable car sales approx 2 years ago "as is".recently, i took my vehicle in to a local shop for an oil change and they advised me that all 4 of my wheels on the car were cracking due to someone installing them too tightly. I called the dealership and they won't do anything about it since it was sold "as is".now, i am unable to even drive the car without taking the chance of one or all 4 of the wheels completely coming off.
