I have several complaints:1) the srs light came on.the dealer claimed that i needed a new computer at a cost of $900.i researched possible problems on this and other websites and had listed the technical service bulletins that were relevant.the dealer was not so thorough.my research showed that honda had been having problem with these computers already for several years and done nothing about it.the problem was with a sensor on the passenger side air bag which was malfunctioning in such a way as to leave in doubt whether or not the air bag would deploy.it is ridiculous that consumers have to pay nearly 1,000.00 to fix systemic problems in a safety system that have repeatedly not been addressed.2) my abs light started coming on.when starting the engine the pump motor for the abs system would activate and attempt to pump fluid in the system.it could be heard from inside the car as a grinding noise.it would cycle on and off for about 6 or so times then the relay would trip, turn off motor and illuminate the abs light.the dealer claimed that the ams module was malfunctioning and needed replacement at a cost of 1,700.00.ridiculous.after doing some research online it seems that this is also a common failure for this make and model of car.3) wireless entry system failed.4) a/c evaporator sprung a leak5) driver side passenger door auto lock does not work.this car is far from reliable, as advertised to be, and very questionable in the safety department.i am finished with honda!
While operating vehicle airbag light illuminatedondashboard, it has been areoccurring problem. Consumer has contacted dealer.dealer performed diagnostic testing, but could not remedy problem. Manufacturer was contacted.
While drivingvehicledash lights for air bag illuminates. Tookvehicle todealer. Please provide any further information.
The srs control unit had failed and was replaced.*scc
While driving air bag light illuminates on dashboard.spoke with dealer.
The srs dash lights came on and stayed on.*nlm
Just finished washing car at the touchless car wash.put the car in drive, went over a metal bump at the endof the car wash and the airbags deployed.i wasn't even going 1 mph.
The contact owns a 1997 honda accord. The contact stated that while parked, the air bag warning light illuminated on the instrument panel. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for diagnostic testing. The mechanic reset the air bag light and stated that if the failure persisted, the srs module would have to be replaced. Approximately one week later the air bag warning light re-illuminated. The vehicle was not further repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 70,000.
Supplemental restraint system indicator light always goes on when we drive the car, which means the system has a problem and we will not be able to benefit from the srs if there were a crash. The manufacturertold owners to have the srs checked after 10 years old of the car. My car is only 5 years old and has only 42000 miles on it. I guess the manufacturer should be responsible for this failure.
The srs (airbags) light has been on for over 2 years. It indicates the airbags are malfunction. Initially, i attempted to re-set the light twice, but it came back shortly after resetting. After searching through internet and nhtsa website here, i realize that this is a widespread problem with 1997 honda accord model. Since this is a serious safety issue and is not drivers fault, honda should hold the responsibility and issue a recall to repair it.
I am exactly in the same situation as complaint number 566928. Srs light came on one day and stayed on, so i took the car to the dealer and reset the system. With in 2 weeks, srs light came back on stayed on again. I brought it back to the honda dealer and was told the srs control unit was defective and it costs $825.50 at owner's expense. It wasn't simply fair and i am not happy to pay for this. It is nothing that i did wrong, simply one of their safety features was defective. Since there was another case exist on this. It needs to be investigated and may need to recall this. If the srs system become defective, it is very dangerous and honda should be responsible for the repair.*nlm
The srs light randomly came on. Took to mechanic and he said there is a problem with the srs module computer which means the airbags will not deploy.
While driving air bag light stays on. Dealer notified.
Consumer srs light came on and air condition was leaking. The consumer contacted the dealer about the air bag light.she made an appointment and was told that it would take 7-10 days for the part to arrive.when the ac leaked the carpet, front and rear, became soaked.
Airbag sensor light stays illuminated while vehicle is in motion.dealer and manufacturer have been notified.
Airbag light comes on intermittently. Dealer has replaced airbag, airbag assembly and wire harness. But, has not remedied problem.
I was driving home from work and my srs light came on and has not went off. I have not hit anything and i was just driving on the interstate when it just came on.
Air bag sos control unit broke, causing the air bag system to become inoperable.contacted both dealer and honda, part not available, waiting for shipment from japan. *ml
Srs dash board light is 'on' and will not turn-off.this is the second time that this has happened.the f dealer repaired it for free because the car was still under warrenty.when i approached the dealer about the second failure i was told that they only warrenty the repair for one year - this failure occurred after the one year warrenty expired.given the number of registered complaints with nhtsa about this problem honda should be forced to repair the problem free of charge.
The srs indicator light keeps coming on in vehicle. It's faulty defective piece. Airbags needed to be replaced. Manufacture felt not responsible for repairs. The vehicle has not been in accident.the failure of the air bag is factory defect.
I took my vehicle in to the dealership to have the srs light checked out.i was told it was a system unit failure.i was given a price $852.63 to get this repaired.by getting this repaired/replaced i would have a 1 year warranty; but no guarantee that it won't happen again within or after a year.after researching your website (nhtsa), i saw a huge number of complaints on the same matter.i then decided to wait to get it replaced; this is too much money to have it continually replaced.i wanted to know if honda will be sending out a recall. Or is this a lost cause.
Air bag are defect. Also the transmission was defective until we paid $800.00 to repair it.
Srs control unit failed on the second diagnostic test at the dealer.
When vehichle started the srs light did not go off.took it in and they reset it, but said that there was a defect in the part.light came back one day when the car was started after about two weeks.i have a problem with having to pay to replace a defective part.the drivers manual says that the air bags do not need to be serviced until the vehicle is ten years old.dt
Srs light came on and has stayed on.dealer advised that warranty is expired and bring it in to have them diagnose the problem cost $75.00.more than likely $500.00 - 600.00 to correct.i advised that i read an article where in most cased the bushings counld be cleaned and replaced at a charge of $50.00 - 75.00.service clerk claims not to have ever heard that.i have read, on your web site, many complaints of this malfunction on many honda's.dt
Airbag light came on in jan 2001, was reset by dealer. On 9 july 2001, airbag light came on again. Consumer has appointment to take vehicle back to dealer.
Srs light illuminated, dealer cleared the fault code, however informed the consumer that the air bags may or may not deploy in an accident, manufacturer declined to make any necessary corrections to insure that the air bags will work properly.
The airbag control unit failed spontaneously (no accident or tampering) in a very well maintained and relatively new vehicle.failed control unit means the airbag won't deploy when needed.my complaint concerns honda's predatory pricing for this component - $580 for the part, more than $700 with dealer installation.this would seem to lead most owners (possibly myself included) to ignore a problem in a critical safety system.
My srs has come on for the third time in my car.the dealer told me while the srs light is on, the air bags won't deploy in the event of an accident.the first two times this has happen, the dealer reset the light.they told me it would cost $800 to fix.i don't have $800 sitting around, therefore i had them reset the light.this is a major safety concern honda needs to address.i bought a car with air bags, and right now my air bags won't deploy.if the seatbelts in my car are covered under a lifetime warranty then why aren't the air bags (it's all part of the srs).i have done absolutely nothing to the car to cause this.i don't feel i should have to sacrifice my life as well as any of my passenger's lives because i don't have $800 to fix honda's problem.i've checked other resources on the internet and have found numerous honda owners with the same problem.i think this should prompt an immediate recall.
The srs indicator light appears on the dashboard. Light stays on until vehicle is shut off. Dealership is aware of the problem. *mrwhile the consumer was driving the srs light came on due to a faulty air bag system which needed to be repaired. The consumer wanted the repair cost to be covered by extended warranty, but the dealer denied repair under warranty.
The "srs" system warning light came on and stayed lit. I took it to my mechanic (a honda specialist) whose computer testing indicated that the srs control unit was defective.he stated that he had seen this problem numerous times and suggested i speak to honda headquarters, which idid. Please note that a friend with the same model car had the same problem with srs light staying on.having explained the problem and concerns over safety issues, i was told that my warranty had expired and that i must take it to the dealer and pay for this very costly part ($600+), and that they must make diagnosis there for honda to consider "good will" reimbursement. When i called the service dept., the woman answering the phone said she had the same problem with her honda and had to have this part replaced! upon bring car into dealership, the diagnosis was confirmed that the srs control unit needed replacement,as the airbags were not functional. I presented documentation as to my meticulous service record with this vehicle and argued that this part should not fail, not having been a regular use part and certainly should last more than 50,000 miles. They finally agreed to pay half of the part, but not tax or labor. My total expense for the diagnosis and service cost $450.00. I was quite dissatisfied and attempted to pursue this with honda america on numerous occasions, expressing my concerns that this seems to be a problematic part in numerous honda vehicles, from anecdotal accounts, and that i felt this is a real safety issue and one that they should be responsible for. They did not wish to pursue the issue with my mechanic or study the old part to evaluate the defective mechanism. The rep at honda america said "you didn't have all your maintenance at the dealership"which in my view should not affect this particular part's failure and which disregards the careful and timely service this car has gotten. They simply said, "it's past your warranty period and it is a 5 year old car!".*
Srs light has been reset several times on my 1997 honda accord lx.. There seems not to be a problem with the airbags. This is extremely frustrating!
The srs light stays on constantly, no problem has been found.
The srs light in my 1997 accord wagon is on for the second time. The first time honda simply turned it off (and charged me). Now i will be paying $1,000 to have the system replaced. This seems to be very common in hondas and it is something that the dealer should pay for or have honda recall. I have always been satisfied with honda - this is my third honda - and it will surely be my last.
As with the others srs light came on in 2004 when i purchased the car from a private owner.before i purchased the car he took it to a honda dealer for a complete inspection and nothing was noted that the srs light was on.i took it into a honda dealer and they didn't run any checks they just told me that it was going to cost $1200.00 to fix.they took the car to do some other minor repairs and when i picked it up the light was off.it came back on within months of being off.it has been on to this day.it sounds fishy to me that they can diagnose by the lamp on when i read that it could be a number of less expensive fixes.

S.r.s light malfuncting on 97 honda accord and honda motor company refuses to acknowdledge it has a problem with this system. Articles on the internetreport that honda airbags at times do not deploy when involved in accidents where they should have. Honda motor company states in the owners manual that this system does not require maintenance and that be checked in 10 years. I feel the the honda motor company should held accountable for this problem and made liable to repair this safety problem when contacted.

Airbag warning light is on. Due to a malfunction. Company refuses to repair. Honda co. The srs light on our 1997 honda ex-v6 model will not go off.we complained to the dealer, willey honda, (where the automobile was purchased new and all service work has been done) and they simply turned the light off saying there must be a "short" in the light. The first complaint was before the warranty was up on the vehicle.several times since when it has come back on - they would turn it off.now they are telling us it must be the computer system and they want us to pay $750.+ to have it repaired properly as the air bags might not be working right!we feel this is a safety issue and they should have taken care of the problem the first time instead of "guessing". This should not be our problem no matter how many miles are on the car!we are, now, afraid to drive it in case they inflate when they "shouldn't" or when they "should". I filed a complaint with customer service honda and they said the warranty was up and i would need to pay.i just heard about your agency or i would have contacted you when it first happened!thanks so much for whatever you can do for me! there isn't really an "incident date" but the program wouldn't let me go on without a "date".i put the date the "news of the cost" was given to me at willey honda!
Consumer stated the airbag light illuminated. Took vehicle to dealer and dealer stated the airbag may not deploy.tsairbag module had to be replaced.problem resolved.
Cjonsumerwasdriving at approximately 35-45mph when the srs light cameon . Consumer had the recall #98-v-321 for air conditioner wiring harness, repairedearly in november 98.
Srs light/sensor unit.we own a 1997 accord.in 2002, the srs light came on, and we brought it to honda dealer.they were able to get the light to turn off.the light came on again recently, and as last year they were able to turn the light off.they said if it comes on again, we will have to replace the defective sensor for $825.well, a week later, the light came on again.we only have 39k miles on the car.according to honda, it's not the age, or mileage, but how many times you start your vehicle that wears away at this expensive unit.i probably start my car 2 times a day, sometimes less.if we don't replace the unit. In the event of an accident, the air bags will not deeply (according to honda).numerous honda owners have been faced with this problem.why are honda owners being sacked with the cost of a defective part?what is being done to make this part more durable?my friend bought a new 2002 odyssey, and already had the light go on after 7 months.obviously, not much has changed.
I recently purchased a used honda accord and noticed the srs light was on.subsequent research revealed that the control module is defective and honda does not cover its replacement.this is a safety issue, as the airbags will not deploy with the srs light on.honda should be responsible for this.please issue a recall.this problem has been occurring for several years--obviously, they are not interested in meeting the safety standards that the nhtsa or dot sets and do not care about the safety of their passengers.please do something about this before people die unnecessarily.
The complaint is regarding the srs module. The unit malfunctioned, giving a red dashboard alarm light. The local honda dealer attempted to reset the trouble light, but couldn't. The dealer indicated the part number on my service invoice as honda part # 06772-sv4-a71 for a 1997 honda accord. I queried several salvage yards for a used part as the oem part was in excess of $500. I was sent the srs module from a salvage yard only to discover that the srs module was indeed from a 1997 honda, however, my srs module (the original defective srs module) was from a 1996 honda.obviously, i purchased a new 1997 honda with a 1996 electronic part. This part was or could have been on the shelf for about 2 years before it was installed in my vehicle.my srs part number taken from my vehicle has part # model 77960-sv4-a93. What is a 1996 part doing in my "new" 1997 vehicle? moreover, this is a critical safety issue that is a direct reflection on life or death..............namely mine and my family. Electronic parts are not like engine parts that have indefinite shelf life. A crank shaft can sit on a shelf for 30 years and still work properly when installed. Try the same thing with an electronic component. Thanks, steve chludzinski.
Consumer complained aboutair bag light coming on/off.vehicle was assessed by honda. The control unit in the steering malfunctioned, thus disabling the air bags to function properly.
The srs warning light came on at about 107000 miles.it was checked and reset at honda service.within 100-200 miles it came on again.when taken to honda service for the next oil service the light-on was checked again and could not be reset.i was told the sensor needed to be replaced at a cost of $715.00.needless to say, i am driving with the light on.i bought the veh. New and it has never been in an accident.replacement of parts for normal wear and tear is understandable, but not for parts that are never activated.this should be a honda responsibility.i am not sure if the air bags will deploy if i am in an accident and the light is a constant nusance.i have aslo had the service engine on light reset a number of time during ownership with no fault present.the day i was at honda service there were 2 other owners requesting service for a srs on light.jenkins and wynne honda of clarksville, tn services my veh. (931-647-3353) .
The vehicle had a defective air bag module which caused the srs light to illuminate. *tc

As others have stated, the srs light recently came on for no apparent reason. My 97 accord lx wagon has 72000 miles. This same problem happened a year ago (at about 65,000), and i paid about $40 to have them check it out, and reset the light.they said nothing was wrong with the air bag system.this shouldn't be an expense the owner should have to bear.obviously, i am not alone in having this problem.*la
Dt: the srs air bag control module failed, however, the light illuminated in early february 2005.broughtvehicle to dealer, anddealer diagnosed it as a defective control module. Consumer statedthis was a common problem.no replacement because it would cost $800.
The "srs" light has repeatedly come on.honda service says the sensor/module is bad and needs to be replace at a cost of $715.00.the air bags have never been deployed.honda should warrant this safety equipment item at no cast to the owner.the warning light is currently "on" and cannot be reset according to honda service department.*la
When starting the vehicle the air bag light comes on and while driving it stays on. Please provide any additional information. Ts
Srs computer failed. Air bag system will not operate. Dealer advised that the defect is in the computer module.
I have honda accord 1997 v6 model and have continuous problem with srs light. I have spent hundreds of dollars to fix this problem and in the end i am told about computer replacement need which costs $750. I am driving with srs light on all the time. My car has never been in accident and airbags were never deployed. Today i saw same complaints on your web site.was there any solution found for this complaint please help me what can i do to fix this srs problem in my car. Third time light came on, taken to dealer to have it reset, told the control unit is bad requiring replacement at $800 +.told the airbag may not deploy in an accident or may deploy without being in an accident. No recall or service bulletins found dealing with this issue.
Consumer was involved in a frontal collision in whichdriver's air bag did not deploy.please give any further details.
The driver side airbag in my car is defective, causing the srs system to be inactive.honda states that this is an isolated incident and that it is not their responsibility to replace this faulty part.i was wondering if anyone else around the country may have experienced this same problem.what good is a safety feature if the manufacturer won't warrant it for more than 4 years?
While drivingdriver side air bag deployed. Vehicle was not involved in any type of collision, did not run over anything in the road.however, consumer sustained knee, neck, and back injuries.vehicle was towed to the dealer.
Driver's 2 year oldchild is able to get out of the safety harness becausechild is not properly restrained.
Honda dealership replaced ignition switch.the original ignition switch was replaced in the 2002 recall.the replacement switch was replaced in 2016 after exhibiting the same symptoms that led to the original recall: silent stall.the faulty switch led to a stall at a stop light and when the light turned green i was rear ended as i was attempting to restart the car.i had to reach out to honda asking them to verify the problem and replace at no charge.
I am hearing electrical sparking sound when i turn ignition switch to start position. The car starts only after several attempts. Car was stationary.
My 1997 honda accord dies while driving.
Engine stalled suddenly, without warning, while driving on highway. Since first occurrence it has been happening more frequently, sometimes on the highway and sometimes while stopped at traffic lights. Is very difficult to restart.
The car dies while driving, sometimes in motion, sometimes stopped in traffic. The mechanic said it is the ignition switch. This was the subject of a recall previously in 2002. I can't tell if my car was listed or repaired then.
I was backing up. I put the car in drive then it died and started to smoke i got out of the car and looked under hood, saw flames from bottom of car, told my daughter the car is on fire. We got our things and out and i called the fire department to put out the fire.
The vehicle was stop and the horn started with areally loud noise that hurt my ears then i tried to stopped when i opened the door it was full of smoke it really smelled bad my head felt kind of wear with the smoke it made me kind of dizzy and sleepy from then my car doesn't work.
1997 honda accord coupe, 2.2l, dx trim ignition switch failure.fiance' and her daughter were driving this vehicle when the engine just "died", no power, no warning light illuminations, etc.vehicle did/does restart at this time.this is identical to the honda campaign recall #02v120000 which covers some hondas of this year/model.i contacted honda and was basically blown off..."sorry, this recall doesn't cover your particular vehicle's vin."failure occurs frequently, at random, no particular indicators that it was going to happen.consequences could be fatal if this fault occurred in an intersection, while passing another vehicle, etc.because honda would not make safe their faulty ignition switch, i replaced the switch at my expense at approximately $60/part, plus my time.honda charges $211 to repair this, so the "total" repair cost with my parts/labor is $211.i did not save the part unfortunately, not thinking of notifying you until too late.the final "dying" that occurred on 9/18/2010 was the last straw.it would be great if others suffering from this obvious fault could be reimbursed or prevented from having to deal with this issue.

My 1997 honda accord would occasionally not start. Then while driving, the engine will quietly shutoff without stalling or misfiring. Now car will shut off after starting when ignition switch goes back to "run' or "on" position.
The contact owns a 1997 honda accord se (na). The contact stated that when the vehicle was set on cruise control and the temperature was below 45 degrees, the vehicle would continuously accelerate. The contact also mentioned that he was unable to remove the key out of the ignition. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who stated that they were unable to duplicate the failure. The manufacturer was contacted who stated that the vehicle was not covered under warranty and was not included in any recalls. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileages were 180,000.
I had to split up my complaint because of the size restriction on the description field.in addition to the ignition coil problem described below i have also had problems with the srs system, abs system, wireless entry system, air conditioner, and the auto door locks (all of which are described in another complaint).for a long time the tachometer behaved randomly.it would surge then fall to zero.for periods of time it behaved normally.there was no pattern to the behavior.initially the engine performance was nominal.over time the engine began surging and stalling, not necessarily in rhythm with the tachometer, nor exhibiting such behavior when the tach was acting up.again there was no obvious pattern.finally the check engine light came on referencing a transmission code that referred to the ignition coil.interestingly once the code was cleared the check engine light when out and did not illuminate for some time.the next time it illuminated it eventually turned itself out.i finally took the car to the detailer.the dealer said that the ignition coil was not talking to the tach and the computer could not read the engine idle speed.consequently it was recommended to replace the ignition coil as it evidently had an electrical failure.i am still researching this problem, but it appears that other owners have had experiences with their 1997 honda accords' engines surging and stalling and in some cases causing accidents.this is definitely not safe and definitely unacceptable. As i mentioned before, i am through with honda!!!!!
I noticed the problem once just by accident. I was stopped at a grocery parking lot with a slight slope. I was in a rush and i took the key out of the ignition and as i was getting out of the door, the car began to roll. I realized that the car was still in drive but the key had come out of the ignition.i thought this is very dangerous and so i am reporting this issue. Please investigate.
Engine just turns off.i am able to restart it immediately by shifting to neutral.this happens 2-3 times in a week and then it stops occurring for a couple weeks and the repeats the cycle.now it is happening more frequently.the local dealer says this particular vehicle has already had the "recall completed".my question is what is my recourse if the problem is still happening even after the recall has been completed.
My car spontaneously blew up on monday. Hadn't driven it in over 2 hours. Believe it falls under recall number 98v231000. No check engine lights and regularly maintenanced.
The contact owns a 1997 honda accord. The contact stated that the vehicle would not start when prompted. A dealer was not made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The contact referenced nhtsa campaign number: 02v120000 (electrical system) as the source of the failure. The failure mileage was 131,000.
This car randomly shuts down as i am driving have taken it to numerous places and nothing is found. Shut down 6 times in a row last time with my child in the car on a dark highway cold and raining. Very dangerous!!! the inside lights flash on and off all of the time mostly turning curves, wasting battery. Noise in the front wheels/tires/axles like something is waiting to break off as you are driving. Overheated last year for no apparent reason costing ton of money. I have replaced thecompressor twice and still the air conditioner doesn't cool. I leave the "air" button on to keep the fans running so it doesn't overheat as i'm driving. Not to mention in the summer it is blowing out heat and all the windows do not roll down. This car is a mess and i will never purchase another honda. Thanks-
I have noted that i can remove the key from the ignition of my 1997 honda accord without being in park.the safety issue is that the driver turn off the engine, remove the key (not in park), leave the car and the car can then roll away.this is the same safety defect that is now being recalled on the 2003 honda.
The contact owns a 1997 honda accord. The contact stated that while traveling 70 mph, the vehicle stalled and was able to restart. The contact stated that the vehicle was previously repaired under nhtsa campaign id number: 02v120000 (electrical system) but the failure recurred two days after the repair. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 15,000.
I have had my 1997 honda accord lx 4cyl for about 4 years.i have searched this problem just about everywhere, and while i've seen the problem reported in hundreds of honda owners, i have yet to see a solid solution.problem: car shutting off while driving, strong fuel/gas smell when this happens, dash lights shutting off and going black, door locks jumping up and downmy car is shutting off while driving - whether i'm on a residential street, or going 75 mph on the highway. I have been blessed not to be hit by another car when this happens.it sometimes starts right back up, but after a few times, it takes about 20 minutes to be able to start. The engine will stir around, but it won't fire up and actually start. Twenty minutes later or so, it starts.. And then we may make it to our destination without stalling again. Oh, and i can't forget the strong scent of fuel in the air when this happens.it started as a sporadic thing that happened whenever i drove long distance (an hour or more) or whenever i was at 1/4 of a tank. More recently, i can hardly drive at all.i tried to leave today, and i didn't make it down the street without the car shutting off twice. The car is not overheating, there's plenty of gas in the tank...yet when i drive, the dash lights go out, the rpm jumps all over the place and finally to 0. The car works fine when the engine is cold (first thing in the morning), but as soon as the engine warms to a normal level, this happens. I've been stranded on the highway more times then i care to admit... By myself, with my children, in 101 degree heat.. Etc. What we've done (unsuccessfully):* i already called the dealership, they ran my vin and said that the recalls have all been taken care of and replaced on my car prior to me purchasing the vehicle.* replaced spark plugs and wires* major tune-up* replaced relay switch* replaced fuel filter.
Consumer stated that the battery died and was replaced.the consumer feels that the problem was with the ignition switch.*scc
On my way home on i-295 my car lost all power and was hard to steer and brakes did not work. I was able to coast to a stop in the emergency lane. I had the car towed to a local mechanic who informed me that it was a bad ignition switch. I took the car to the honda dealership and the part was under recall. The honda tech called me yesterday and tried to tell me that the problem was in the fuse box. My mechanic already knew it was the switch and honda told me the same thing when i dropped the car off. Im not sure if they were trying to upsell me or deny responsibility.
The contact owns a 1997 honda accord. After starting the vehicle, it stalled without warning. The vehicle was able to restart. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The contact was not aware if the vehicle was serviced under nhtsa campaign number: 02v120000 (electrical system). The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.
The contact owns a 1997 honda accord.while driving, the vehicle completely shut off as if the contact turned the vehicle off herself.she steered the vehicle into the emergency lane and restarted it after a few minutes.the first failures occurred 1-2 months apart.most recently, the failure has been occurring every other day.she took the vehicle to a mechanic friend, who stated that the issue may have been caused by nhtsa campaign id number 02v120000 regarding the ignition; however, a formal diagnosis was never received.the latest occurrence was on april 16, 2009 while driving 15 mph.the dealer and manufacturer have not been notified.the current mileage was approximately 183,400 and failure mileage was approximately 175,000.
My car engine some times used to suddenly shut off and stop abruptly, while slowing or braking. At times, it will start right away after cranking the ignition switch, but, some times, required several tries.abrupt stopping caused extremely dangerous situation, as the drivers behind had to make very hard stops and narrowly missed hitting rear end of my honda. Since the problem was occurring intermittently, it was very difficult to diagnose and took almost one year.first my mechanic thought it was caused by defective idling speed control relay, then due to bad ignition related relay, which was replaced, but the fault persisted and stalling became more frequent.actually, the defect was due to worn or defective ignition switch, which use to shut the engine off while slowing or braking.after replacing the ignition switch approximately one year ago, car has never stalled.
Due to an investigation by the nhtsa honda is recalling some of their vehicles for faulty ignition interlocks. My vehicle is not included in this recall but does have this exact problem. The keys will come out of the ignition when the car is not in park. I have had a couple of incidences where my car has rolled away but i've been able to get in and stop it before it has struck anything. This is dangerous. I have talked to honda but they will not fix the ignition interlock in my car since it is not included in the recall. I feel that since they are recalling some models for this safety concern they should be responsible to replace the ignition interlock my vehicle as well. Is there anything nhtsa can do to help with this issue?
The vehicle power steering failed.
The contact owns a 1997 honda accord. The contact stated the vehicle stalled without warning numerous times. The dealer advised the contact that nhtsa campaign id number 02v120000 electrical system: ignition: switch repair was performed; however the failure was not corrected. The contact stated the ignition failure caused the muffler to fail. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired.the failure mileage was 120,000 and the current mileage was 140,000.
Vehicle stalled without warning.continued to stall at low speeds high speeds cold engine hot engine. Since it was intermittent, mechanic had trouble diagnosing. I found a recall on nhtsa regarding this problem in which the ignition switch module was to blame. Honda refused to honor the recall given the length of time that had passed so i had it repaired at my mechanics.
Battery failed.
Consumer stated the battery died and was replaced.
Battery went out, and two fuses had to be replaced.also, the air conditioner is blowing out heat, making the vehicle hot, and the dealer can't found the problem.
Horn starts blowing while driving, without you touching the horn buttons. This happens without warning. The dealers does not know the cause. When the horn starts blowing it deprograms the alarm and keyless alarm remotes.
While driving the engine just quits.
The contact owns a 1997 honda accord. The contact stated the keys became lodged in the ignition and would not release unless the vehicle was in park. The dealer advised that the vehicle was not under recall and any repairs would be at the expense of the contact. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 131,000.
Heared a loud banging noise under the shift lever while driving 40+ mph accelerating onto the interstate.after several days, car stalled while turning corner.experienced sluggish and intermittent loss of power (with frequent stalling driving betweeen 10 to 65 mph on residential area or on a highway).honda service technician removed and replaced the ignition coil & main relay, and advised me to disconnect a non-honda car theft alarm system for further troubleshooting of the ignition system.problem got worst after disconnecting car theft alarm system.car lost power, (sometimes power comes back on when foot was lift off the gas pedal), more than 15 times within 8 miles of driving at 4:30am and had difficulty restarting.experienced hard start later that day at 3:30pm.today, christmas day, i disconnected the battery, cleaned the terminals, checked the wires under the dashboard for cut or loose connections, reconnect the battrey, test drived, and car stalled with some weird noise (like a noise made by an electrical component lossing power) by front/lower of the front passenger floor.this problem had already cost me a little over $500.00 and i just don't have that kind of money to spend just to guess what will correct the problem.
Honda missed a recall on an ignition switch that could have caused me a fatal accident as the car was stopping on the freeway once at full speed 65+ mphi brought the car in with detail of the problem "the car dying' and they misdiagnosed it and failed to see the recall which they would have had access to once they input the vin - honda then refused to reimburse me the money i paid for the unnecessary and unsuccessful work that they did.

While driving on the highway the car stalled (no power) without warning.this occurred several times between three visits to the dealership before being repaired.i was informed that my ignition was bad on the last visit (the mechanic had trouble starting the car). No problem except that i never had a problem starting the car, even after having to start the car and move it at the dealership on the day of the repair.when i initially declined the repair solution (unbelievable) i asked to talk to the manager.the manager never spoke to me but did adjust the price down better than $50 and made the repair without my consent.i paid reluctantly informing them that if this happened again they have a serious problem on their hands.i thought only to use the internet to find if this was a common problem without having been recalled.someone may have lostlost their life or will loose their life.my car has not stalled since being repaired. My last three cars were honda accords.i don't think future purchases will be.
Engine died without any warning lights. Took vehicle to dealer. Dealerlooked at it and could not find cause ofproblem.consumer had this problem about 3 more times. Took vehicle back to dealer, and they saidigniter needed to be changed.consumer could not afford, and distributor was changed. But,problem still exists. Whenvehicle dies consumer loses power steering, andbrakes get hard.

I drove to a restaurant about one mile from my house and parked nose-in to a curb in a parking lot. I placed the car in first gear, as always, and engaged the emergency brake. As i and my three companions left the car, i clicked the remote keyless lock, as i usually do.after dinner, we came out to return home.my husband was to drive back, so i again used my remote keyless entry clicker and the car unlocked.my husband held open the passenger-side front door for me, and i sat in the front seat, the clicker in my hand, but no button activated.before my husband could shut the door, the car started (note:no key in the ignition), and climbed the curb in front.it stalled, then started again and continued up and over the bushes in front.i was the only one in the car.there was no key in the ignition.i was on the passenger side of the front seat.the car does not have a remote ignition.the car is a manual transmission.the emergency brake was still on.the front bumper of the car separated as we backed off the bush.

A couple of months back i read about a recall on various honda and acura vehicles with regard to an ignition switch problem in consumer reports. The recall affected some 19'97 models, but 1998 and newer accords. I own a '97 accord that is experiencing the same problem. I contacted a local dealer and after almost 3 weeks of aggravating phone calls redirecting me to everyone from the corporate office to the janitor, i was denied inclusion in the recall. Some of the excuses were that my vehicle has too many miles on it to be included, that i don't maintain a service relationship with any particular dealer, and that it may just be my key has worn out (both of them at the same time?). I was wondering if it is customary to make such arbitrary decisions when determining inclusion in a safety recall. All those factors listed do not change the fact that my car can roll away after i remove my key.

While vehicle was being stolen, the alarm did not sound off. Manufacturer was contacted.
Concerning the iginition switch recall on honda vehicles - why should consumers be made to pay almost one hundred dollars to have an alarm system rewired for the vehicle???the recall was not the fault of the consumer, and honda dealerships are charging exorbitant prices to have the alarm system rewired. Even if the alarm is not a honda part, the 1997 model did not come with an alarm, so obviously one had to be bought, and if the honda has to remove the wires because of their recall, then there should be no reason to have to pay such high fees to have those wires replaced.
When starting vehiclesrs warning light came on and stayed on.dealer says a computer chip has to be replaced.
The onboard computer/brain is malfunctioning.a certified mechanic has advised me that the abs/brake system and the srs/air bag system could deploy at any time due to the computer malfunction.i am concered that a serious accident could result if the brakes fail or the air bags prematurely deploy while i am driving.

I have a 1997 honda accord.i have been having serious problems with the car turning off while i am driving.it looks as if the problem should have been covered in nhtsa campaign id number 02v120000 but was not. I consulted the honda dealer and they said that my car was not covered by this recall and therefore i must pay for the repairs to the ignition switch.
The contact owns a 1997 honda accord. The contact stated that while driving approximately 75 mph with the cruise control activated, the vehicle suddenly stalled. Dt:1997 honda accord. Dealership was not honoring extended warranty.american honda sent the consumercampaign i 98-081 for extended warranty.went online for a recall that nhtsa had for lower ball joints.american honda ran consumer's vin on website and they said that the lower ball joints did not need to be replaced, but they were going to replace the oil.vehicle would be ready on tomorrow by noon.the lower ball joint was confirmed and there was no issue with them.the issue was for the dealership to honor the extended warranty that honda issued.the service manager said it was not in their interest to let other customers know about safety needs.*sc.
Honda recommends replacing timing belt, balancer belt and water pump at 7 years or 105,000 miles on the 1997 honda accord. I had the dealer replace them all at 7 years and 36,139 miles, in 2004.the replacement water pump failed prematurely in just over five years and 39,618 miles later. Earlier this year i kept seeing coolant under the car.i had the dealer install new belts and a new water pump. The new pump failed right out of the box spilling coolant on the new belts. So, the dealer removed the new belts, installed another new water pump and then reinstalled the same belts. I don't know how this will affect to the longevity of the new belts.also, my main concern is that the timing belt is driving the water pump, and the whole assembly is hidden under a cover.if the water pumps starts failing, hot coolant will spill on the timing andthe balancer belts causing them to weaken over time, and they can either slip or break causing catastrophic engine failure and an accident.please see related photos:http://www.honda-tech.com/showthread.php?t=1908944i believe this is a poor design that can cause the engine to fail suddenly. It seems that hondas from 1992 to 2002 use the same basic concealed pump design. Note: the waterpump was replaced at 36,139 (preventive measure) and it failed at 75,757 or less than 40,00 later!!!updated 05/11/10.8jb

The contact owns a 1997 honda accord. While driving above 40mph, the vehicle suddenly temporarily shut off and then back on. The vehicle has not been diagnosed by the dealer. The current and failure mileages were 118000.
There was an oil leak due to an engine block crack.the consumer states that there was a small porous crack and developed a special bracket to hold the exhaust manifold away from the engine block because the vibration of the manifold exhaust is against the engine caused the crack.*scc
Design of the oil filter (location) which is over exhaust system and catalytic converter allows oil to be released onto the exhaust system and catalytic converter while changing filter. This results in smoke from burning off of unit.

Consumer took vehicle to the dealer due to smoke coming from the exhaust during acceleration, the dealer could not find any problems, the vehicle was taken back a second time in which the dealer removed the heads and found that there was excessive sludge in the engine in which the engine would need replaced, the dealer would not make repairs under warranty.
While driving at 75mph vehiclestalled.consumerpulled off, put vehicle in park, and restartedvehicle.took to dealer on two occasions and dealer still couldn't correct the problem. Please provide any further information.
Oil seal blown out at very low mileage; garage informs that problem is occurring at high frequency among hondas of similar age, although not mileage, and that honda is avoiding or delaying sending out notices of defect.
No summary listed for above vehicle.
Have taken my car in 4 times and they just reset it.they keep on telling that there's no solution to the problem yet. They contacted the headquarters, and they didn't do anything to satisfy me.i do not feel confortable about my car because i have to miss work and school so much for this problem, and yet they do not do anything.they don't seem to care about this problem.i think i have a lemon and i don't like the way they are treating this situation.
Oil seal blew, lost almost all of the oil. No warning. Honda dealer in alhambra, ca said that the engine had ceased, wanted over $8,000 to replace engine. Took it to another local mechanic who said that the engine had not ceased. He had 2 other honda accords there with the same problem.
While traveling at any speed vehicle would die intermittently. Please provide further information.
Vehicle has stalled 8 times at 30-65 mph. Dealer was contacted, said a recall was forthcoming on this issue.
I lost more than half of the oil on 2 mile drive to school- broken seal, with no warning whatsoever. My luck it did not happen on the interstate highway- the car would've been gone. A mechanic at firestoneservice center was not surprised - he had seen this happen on many other accords.
Same exact incident happened to another car i owned, honda accord lx 96, at the same mileage range (59k-60k). Only with accord 96, i was fortunate enough to stop on time, and was able to save the engine. Whereas, in this car - accord 97 situation, i was too late, all of the oil came out, and engine was irreparably damaged. According to the honda accord manuals, maintenance (change of timing belts, etc.) on the car should be done at around 90k miles, excluding the regular oil changes. Therefore, both incidents were not related to a delayed maintenance, but to an irregular failure of the oil pump and the oil seal. Both cases are identical on similar cars and deserve to be investigated.
While starting vehicle engine check light remains on.also, while driving problem has occurred five times.engine misfires, but dealer cannot correct problem.
Cruise control failed to turn off when brake pedal was depressed, cruise control button turned off. Braking system failed to slow or stop vehicle.only when parking brake was applied did vehicle slow.
While driving the car (approx. 50 mph) the balancer shaft oil seal backed out. The engine oil was pumped out. The warning lights came on and my wife pulled the car off the road. But it was too late the engine seized. Honda was willing to replace the seal but said they would not repair the engine. Honda knows that this seal is a problem and has sent a service bulletin out telling people so. (we did not receive a notice from honda on this) instead of recalling the faulty part honda has figured out that they can put the responsibility for their design mistakes on their customers by simply sending out a service bulletin. If you don't get a letter from honda --oh well. Honda should replace the seals in all of the affected cars and honda should be required to repair/replace any engines destroyed by the faulty seal.
Intermittent stalling.
While backing out of the driveway, consumer saw black smoke coming from under the hood. Consumer stopped vehicle, looked underneath the car and saw that oil was pouring onto the ground. Dealer has not been contacted.the balance shaft seal was replaced along with a new retainer, balance belt and timing belt.
Vehicle was taken in for a recall repairs fora balancer shaft oil seal leak. Honda refused to pay for the repairs. Honda insistedtheir responsibility ended in january 2003. However, consumer called in september 2002 to get this work done. It wasn't mentioned at that time. File wasn't updated, resulting in refusal of recall repairs.
Road water gotinto the engine compartment and was picked up by fan belt. Consumer contacted the dealer and manufacturer.
Exhaust shield rattles, dealer responded that there are ways to minimize the noise, but never fix it permanently.
Emissions recall on vehicle.the engine light came on.*tceach time the vehicle was taken tot he dealer for this problem they replaced the evap canister vent valve.the consumer's vehicle is close to it's 150,000 mile warranty and is concerned that the problem will persist after the warranty expires.

The engine light illuminated on the dashboard. The dealer replaced the egr valve.
Consumer took vehicle into the dealer for regular maintenance, mr. Dan olson, floor manager, indicated that manufacturer has send a bulletin #100 containing information on the seal crack block exhaust manifold.so he had to pay for this repair over $400.00.
Exhaust pipe had a hole and rust, and muffler was comptetely hollow too.yh
The muffler failed at 33,695 miles.dealer said original muffler is not covered under warranty.
I have noticed this problem for the past 2+ winters on my car. The first time it happened, i was going home from work on a cold winter night. I got the freeway and accelerated to 55 mph. I then set the cruise control (as i normally do in light traffic). I noticed that the car's engine was still revving a lot more than it should. I looked down and noticed that i was doing 70 mph. I immediately stepped on the brake to deactivate the cruise control. I continued to notice this issue all winter. I set the cruise at 40 mph and noticed that it went up by about 20 mph above the setting before it finally stopped accelerating and settled back to the cruise set speed (or close to it). In the warm weather this problem disappears.
Water leaked into front flooring, caused by "leaf buildup" in a/c.
I paid $467.32 to replace a part that should not have failed during life of vehicle;this was a defective part and honda should reimburse me. No safety defect listed in summary.
Srs airbag light came onpanel.consumer took vehicle to dealership.she needs a srs control unit, anddealership doesn't have them in stock.water has gooten inside ofradio.drainage coming from air conditioner leakage.dealership is aware of problem.the consumer believes possibly the water corroded srs computer module as the result of faulty water drainage which should have been the responsibility of the dealer or manufacturer.

Not to mention in the summer it is blowing out heat and all the windows do not roll down. This car is a mess and i will never purchase another honda. Thanks-
I purchased the vehicle in june 2000. As certified vehicle from dealership,, certified for safety inspections 150 point?i noticed when test driving vehicle. Front of vehicle had severe vibration, i noticed that the tires were low on air pressure.problem continued,i contacted the dealership numerous time to resolve the matter. At the time of sale the inspection was to be final.i later found out the inspection was never completed properly, ther are two active titles currently on vehicle, ohio and california california is now salvaged title as of 2/04/2001.contacted dealership numerous time regarding the findings on the bumper cover that had medical tape holding the side secure fastners together. And bumper cover out of allignment.radiator support had been buckled and not repaired correctly, primer on the inside of right front hood, head l ight assembly unit not complete and out of allignment, uneven tire wear, no owners manual, tires switched at time allignment was performed by dealership, dealership rented vehicle for 10 days., dealership represented preferred body shop american autobody and paint as boar official that was misrepresentation, contacted american honda as well as honda care regarding this vehicle and dealership?i asked the dealership what the certification applied to?it was to be warrantied just like a new vehicle..vehicle warranty docs were incomplete and not voluntarily submitted?dealership employee pushed husband against wall?no owners manual?michellon warranty came with vehicle docs. But at time of allignment federal tires were replaced without warranty?i was told the new tires were magical?i totalled the vehicle and later found on ccc report from the insurance company, that vehicle had previous damage done.. And all the above problem pertaining to previous damage?

The contact owns a 1997 honda accord. While reversing, there was a loud metallic noise coming from the hood of the vehicle. The failure recurred numerous times. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 170,000.
I have noted that i can remove the key from the ignition of my 1997 honda accord without being in park.the safety issue is that the driver turn off the engine, remove the key (not in park), leave the car and the car can then roll away.this is the same safety defect that is now being recalled on the 2003 honda.
Speedometer unit.
Four speed automatic transmission completely failed for my 1997 honda accord lx, 4-door, with only 69,550 miles. The "check engine" light illuminated, while the "d4" automatic transmission indicator flashed off and on at same time. Honda wouldn't drive in fourth gear and acted as it was slipping. Vehicle was brought to ed voyles honda, marietta, georgia on september 13, 2011 for diagnosis. Honda technician(s) advised that the "ecm code" disclosed that the transmission had completely failed and required replacement. I was not notified and/or offered any information regarding honda extending the transmission warranty for this 1997 honda accord lx. At time of incident, was interstate 285 on ramp when vehicle transmission started slipping, allowing maximum speed of approximately 15 to 20 mph. Vehicle immediately in the backof my vehicle had to take evasive action to prevent rear end collision. Premature transmission failure created a significant safety hazard to myself and other vehicles to my rear.please note, honda accord within several years before and after the 1997 year model has a significant history of early transmission failures in which honda has failed to initiate a product recall, despite numerous website posts..
While driving uphill in the mountains of nc on i-26, without prior warning, transmission slipping of my 97 honda accord with 88,000 original miles, caused traffic to back-up behind me in the rain.was finally able to remove from freeway out of danger.

Hi,several years ago i reported to nhtsa (and corporate honda)that my honda accord had serious transmission problems. A nhtsa engineer telephoned me and did in fact go out to a dealer to investigate my allegation. No action was taken by nhtsa and honda did nothing to fix the transmission defect. Today, some years after my complaint, i have been informed that transmission repair shops are experiencing a large and unusual increase in transmission failures of the honda accord, 4 and 6-cylinder. Failures are occurring at 40,000to 60,000 miles.honda dealerships here in southern california are not paying for these premature failures, instead owners are paying $6,000.000 for new tranmissions. Please investigate.yours very truly, peter reiter/[email protected]

Complete honda accord automatic transmission failure at 69,550 milesbelow incident almost resulted in rear end collision on interstate highway when attempting to accelerate onto entrance ramp and vehicle behind required evasive action to prevent rear end collision with my vehicle due to automatic transmission failure, failing to accelerate more than 20 mph.four speed automatic transmission completely failed for my 1997 honda accord lx, 4-door, with only 69,550 miles.
The contact owns a 1999 honda accord.the contact stated that the vehicle would hesitate when shifting gears.the vehicle would also lunge forward sporadically and without warning.the dealer diagnosed that the transmission would need to be replaced.the manufacturer was not notified of the failure.the vehicle was not repaired.the failure mileage was 65,000 and the current mileage was 87,000. The vin was unavailable.
On 7/27/03, sunday the check engine light showed up, i decided to take the car to my mechanic right away the next day, but on monday morning, i couldn't even get out to the main road from my development and the car just lost the gear. This happened without any warning sign, and the incident could have turned fatal at highway traffic and speeds. Car just has 58k miles and honda refuses to help in any way, even though they have history of such problems and they even have an extended warrenty for such problems on newer honda and acura branded vehicles. The reason for refusal is that they don't provide goodwill assistance to vehicles more than 5 years old. But the bottomline is that i have maintained this vehicle well and generally the usage habits affect manual transmissions not the automatic ones.we have driven other cars to death and nothing had happened to their automatic transmissions, so this is a manufacturer defect. There is certain quality and durability that is expected from any product, and the manufecturer should be held liable for any product that fails, even if it happens outside of warrenty. The fact that they provide 7 years/100000 miles extended warrenty on newer vehicles, sets up a precedent, that is they expect a defect free transmission to last at least that long.honda just thinks that they can get away without fixing older cars because they think oweners won't pursue their case in the court, but i am going to the small claims court for sure on this one.
1997 honda accord lx, 4-door, 4-speed automatic transmission. Automatic transmission failure at 69,500 miles, september 09, 2011.transmission slipping in fourth/third gear, with little acceleration. The "check engine" light came "on," while at the same time the "d4" automatic transmission shift indicator was "blinking" on and off. Vehicle was brought to ed voyles honda, marietta, georgia on september 13, 2011, where honda technician(s) checked diagnostic code(s) for "ecm." honda technician(s) stated that the transmission, with only 69,500 miles had completely failed and required a new and/or rebuilt transmission, despite all preventative maintenance having been performed on the vehicle. Replacement cost expected to be $2,400.00 for a rebuilt transmission, or $5,500.00 for a new oem honda replacement transmission. According to honda service advisor, honda has had previous automatic transmission failures involving this model and year. However, no mention of any extended warranty by honda was mentioned, if any.

I have a 1997 honda accord, model lx-v6, vin [xxx] with automatic transmission. I was driving home from philadelphia and nearing home when after starting from a stop light in d4(auto) the car vibrated vigorously and stalled. (the vibration and stallingwas like what happens when operating a manual transmission car and releasing the clutch suddenly.) i pulled over and started the engine from park to d4 and again i had the same problem. I repeated with d2 and the car did not stall although the engine was making some noise. I drove the car to a nearby honda dealer, planet honda in union, nj and explained the problem. The car was left at the dealer for 2 days but they were unable to give a reason for this. The noise in the engine still appears and the dealer is suggesting replacing the whole transmission. This is a safety hazard and if the problem occurred on the highway instead of a local road it could have been hazardous.information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6)
After coming to a stop at a stop sign, the car would not move when i pressed on the gas pedal.was forced to downshift to make the car move; d3/d4 were not working and engine merely revved as though i was in neutral.problem occurs intermittently.dealer was unable to find problem and did not repair.two months later, the transmission has blown out completely and most gears do not work or produce loud griding noises along with severe jolting.dt
Automatic transmission needs to be replaced at 80,000 miles.service performed prior to normal cycle per owners manual at 45,000 miles.local honda car dealer performed service noted on a service bulletin (5 flushings) and did not work.

The contact owns a 1997 honda accord.while driving at high speeds for longer than 30 minutes, the contact noticed that the rpm's were higher than normal and the check engine light was on.the vehicle was taken to a transmission mechanic and it was discovered that the transmission was slipping.the vehicle has not been diagnosed by the dealer.the current and failure mileages were 108,000. Updated 09/25/08the torque converter was replaced. Updated 09/26/08.
While driving transmission would slip when changing gears. Had taken vehicle to dealership, and mechanic indicated that oil was leaking onto the transmission which caused the gears to slip.
Automatic transmission needs replacing @ 85,000 miles.all mileage services as noted in manual have been followed.honda dealer has done a multiple flushing service -- problem still exists.
Honda accord 1997, automatic transmission loosing gears, unable to maintain safe highway speed and associated high risk maneuvers to exit the drive lanes onto a shoulder. Third incident, third replacement transmission for the same reason. All had suggested manufactures maintenance and service performed.
After coming to a stop at a traffic light, the car would not move when pressed on the gas pedal.dealer said that the car needs a new transmission.this car has only 35,000 miles when this transmission failed and the cost is not cover under warranty..
The brakes make a loud clicking noise (similar to the sound heard when cars running over the sewer manhole cover) during the first brake when the vehicle has been parked for a while (2-3 hours) or after the gear has been shifted to reverse and back to drive.dealer cannot find the problem.
The contact owned a 1997 honda accord.the contact stated that the key should not be removed from the vehicle unless the gear shift selector was in park. He stated that the key came out of the ignition when the vehicle was moving which caused unsafe conditions. Updated 08/24/10. *ljupdated 08/25/10

I removed ignition key , thinking transmission was in park, and exited from car.the car rolled away.i discovered it was in drive. Honda has a recall # 03v423000 for this identical problem.the problem on my car has been verified by the dealer.i am being told that the recall does not include 1997s , only 1998-1999.i am hereby informing you that the problem also exists on 1997s (demonstratable on my vehical with 59k miles.)1997's should also be included in the recall.my case number with honda is no12003-12-1000057.i would like to get this resolved immediately so that i can get a fix to a potentially dangerous situation.thank you.
Transmission on my 1997 honda accord lx v4 failed prematurely at 58000 miles, and honda refused to help in any way, even though they had history of such problems, andeven had an extended warranty for such problems on newer honda and acura branded vehicles.the reason for refusalwas that they didn't provide goodwill assistance to vehicles more than 5 years old.but the bottom line was that i have maintained this vehicle well so this was a manufecturing defect, and there was certain quality and durability that was expected from any product, and the manufecturer should be held liable for any product that failed, even if it happend outside of warranty.the fact that they provided 7 years/100000 miles extended warranty on newer vehicles, set up a precedent, that was that they expected a defect free transmission to last at least that long.also alarming is the way in which failure occured.on 7/27/03, sunday the "check engine" light showed up, i decided to take the car to my mechanic right away, and so on monday morning i couldn't even get out to the main road from my development and the car just lost the gear.this happened without any warning sign, and the incident could have turned fatal, if the failure occured at freeway traffic and speeds.
Consumer was driving vehicle into a parking lot when bumper hit the pole that posts handicap signs, very slightly dented the bumper of vehicle.also both air bags deployed.consumer was wearing seat belt.also burned her right armand broke her glasses. Consumer stated there was also a problem with the torque converter and catalytic converter.
I am having an issue with my automatic transmission on my 1997 honda accord ex coupe. I had my transmission serviced recently and apparently the code p0740 came up which is related to the torque converter. With many hours or research and speaking with american honda there is an issue with all the automatic transmissions on hondas 1997 and newer. This problem results in the transmission needing replacement. The clutch slips and takes shards of metal off leading to a clog in the filter. The problem will cause total transmission failure at any time. When i called american honda they were unwilling to help me with this issue. They stated that it was a known issue but there was nothing that they would do for me. My only option now is to spend 3000.00 to replace the transmission which seems unfair since the car is in otherwise fantastic shape.
Consumer was driving at 30 mph when the right front passenger wheel came off. Vehicle was towed, and it was determined thatthe lower ball joints separated, and the axlecracked. Manufacturer stated that thisvehicle was not included in the ball joint nhtsarecall 99v069000.....as aresult, of broken lower ball joint right front wheel detached and was lodged undeneaththe body of the vehicle. The front end wason the ground, and fluid was leaking all over the road. Consumer called aaa and vehicle was towedt a local mechanic, who identified the problem as a broken right side lower ball joint. However, it was obvious to the mechanic that this wasnot a typical problen, and was not the result of naural wear. There was a technical servic ebulletin which applied to this vehicle. Mechanic replaced lower ball joint and cracked axle. In addition, had the ball joint on the other side replaced, even though it seemed to be tight, as a precaution so that this would not happen again.
Balance shaft seal broke, causing oil spillage.the dealer has been notified, and repaired the problem at owner's expense.honda is aware of the problem. *ml
Air bag are defect. Also the transmission was defective until we paid $800.00 to repair it.
Seatbelt failure
I had filed a report with the bar about a seat belt on the driver side of my honda accord starting to frey and they had spoke with honda in poway ca and they will not cover the seat belt because it is not broken. To me it seems like a safety issue because if i am involved in an accident will the seat belt be working 100%? there are tear marks on the belt were it clicks to the belt buckle and i feel this is not safe. I feel honda should cover this.
One of the seat belt at the back doesnt retract. Its just dangling. I have hardly used this seat belt however when used sparingly the seat belt got stuck didnt retract.
The contact owns a 1997 honda accord. The contact stated that the seat belt failed to latch in place without warning. In addition, the contact stated that the ignition key disengaged while in the on position. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.
Left side seat belt inertia reels failed to retract the seat belt to the stowed position.
While driving the front passenger's side seat belt locks up for no apparent reason.please provide details.
Front and rear shoulder belts fail to properly retract, causing inadequate protection when belts are needed. Consumer has yet to contact dealer. The rear seat belt is not usable at all and the driver seat belt does not retract properly.
Front passenger side seat belt locks up intermittently for not apparent reason.

Passenger side front seat belt gets stuck.passenger must unbuckle seat belt and retract it completely and then rebuckle it.this always happens whenever a passenger is in the vehicle since the vehicle was new.
The seat belt is not big enough. The dealer has inform me that honda does not have an extension for the seat belt, it is illegle to drive anywhere but my state without the seat belt fasten.
Seat belt design allows for continued tightening when movement is felt, causing a very uncomfortable tight feeling on consumer.
Vehicle was involved in a collision. Upon impact, rear lap belt unbuckled where an unoccupied child restraint was located. Dealer has been notified. Feel free to provide any further information.
Passenger side front seat belt gets stuck.passenger must unbuckle seat belt and retract it completely and then rebuckle it.this always happens whenever a passenger is in the vehicle since the vehicle was new.
Passenger's front seat belt buckle will not stay fastened.belt will lock but can easily become undone.dealer will be contacted.
This is a general complaint for the front seat belt buckles used on a wide variety of honda vehicles over multiple production years being able to unlatch during a collision.to keep this complaint form brief, only the main topics will be discussed.the defect consists of the seatbelt failing to fully latch in place if a small amount of a beverage (usually soda pop) is spilled into the seatbelt housing.after drying, the beverage residue becomes sticky and the design of the seatbelt buckle prevents the buckle from latching securely.the failure mode can be either the seatbelt not latching at all or the buckle giving a 'false latch' condition meaning that the seatbelt tongue clicks and seems to hold in place normally to the occupant but if pulled firmly it will release.obviously, this is a major safety concern to occupants.honda has known about this defect and even has returned warranty parts (estimate over 1000 failures have been returned by customers) that it has categorized as bsr (brown sticky residue).this problem goes back at least as far as 1994 (with the 1994 style design being especially prone to this failure). As stated, honda has received many failures of this type back but has taken no action to correct the problem.it is unknown how many people may have been wearing their seat belt but when in a collision it unlatched and allowed them to be injured.furthermore, with honda placing a cupholder just inches away from the seatbelt buckle (and with the buckle designed in a funnel shape), it is obvious that honda knew beverages would be in close proximity to the buckle.this is a very serious problem and i hope that an investigation will be conducted to help save lives.forcing honda to present the information about the warranty claims it has received for seat belt buckles over the past several years would show that honda has known of the defect but has taken no steps to correct it or inform its customers of the danger.
Driver's seat belt buckle will not release from locking mechanism, cause unknown. Please give any further details.
Right front seat belt retractor gradually tightens until belt is disconnected.
The passenger seat belt locks up holding the passenger tightly against the seat and can only be released if the seat belt is completely retracted. This can be done manually without the car driving. I have contacted our dealer and it says all is well.looking at your database indicates having similar problems.
Design: right frnt shoulder belt only retracts after it's fully extended, becomes tighter and tighter unil occupant is forced to unlatch seat belt. Occupant continues to ride unrestrained.
Seat belt will not retract or come out.

My 1997 honda accord ex with 107,000 miles that i had owned since brand new and had serviced routinely developed an abs braking problem. My brakes were determined to be ok and the abs light did not come on, but when i stepped on the brakes they would make a loud and slow "click click" sound, the abs buzzing sound occurred, the brakes would push up and the car would lurch forward. Dealer replicated the issue and determined that it was likely the modulator needing to be replaced. This seems to be a common issue on here- please look into this!
Abssystem wasl leaking cost$ 640 to repair. Then found that abs modulator had failed which cost over $940 to replace. What kind of brake design is this? total ripoff. Never again honda.
Consumer states that the abs system failed. Please provide any information.
Brakes becoming less effective and that they emitted grind and screech when applied, front bake pads cracked right down the centerall four of them.
1997 honda accord ex failed abs modulator.it seems there are several complaints of this part being a high failure item.honda just sits back and charges 1300 dollars to replace a safety item.please honda make this a recall and start taking care of your customers.
When engine is started i hear a noise coming from the abs modulator.the noise repeatedly occurs approx every 2-3 minutes. After approx 5 miles of driving the abs light comes on.i went to the dealership and they said that 2 parts needed to be changed, the modulator and ?.the cost of repair was 1200 with a dealer discount.
I purchased this 1997 honda accord from my mom (she was the only owner) it only had 18,000 miles at the time.currently the auto has a little more than 40,000 and there is noticable tire wear and the brakes make a strange clicking noise when braking.

I recently about 1 1/2 months ago had my brake pads replaced, 2 days ago the abs and brake light has come on and will not go off, i have done all the checks and everything is fine...estimated repair runs from $900-$1500..i have also noticed several complaints from other honda owners for the same thing i feel that honda needs to do a recall and get this issue corrected..it should not be placed on the consumer honda needs to stand up and take ownership of the fact they have vehicles with defective parts.
Took car to dealership after abs warning light came on.diagnosed problem is that abs modulator needs to be replaced.part cost $963.50 and labor at dealership is $189.60.that is in addition to $59.00 i had to pay to have problem diagnosed.

When applying the brakes a clicking noise occurs. Dealer says the brake pads are shifting in their sockets, causing the noise, which is normal.
Brake pads failed causing noise.
Vehicle lost braking ability and stopped by scratching the front right wheel to the road divider. The cause was a faulty master cylinder.
The steering has for 4 stems to the central shaft. The horn is a small button on 2 of these stems (the upper stems when the steering is not turned; when the steering is turned, it is anybody's guess). Can't find horn quickly enough.

On april 9, 2002 as i was parking into my apartment complex drive, going about 5 mph parking in a space.my 1997 honda accord se accelerated forward instead of stopping.the car jumped the parking median and i ended up in some brushes and on one of the apartment patio balconies.praise god, the brushes was there which slowed the speed and did not cause more damage than it did.the car picked accelerated at a high speed, i would say about 30-45 or more mph.it sounded loud like an accelerator just picked up very high speed.
Pressed the gas pedal on my car, and the car kept accelerating and the gas pedal got hard i had to put the car in park to stop it from hitting a car in front of me all while the engine kept revving, i then turned of the car and when i turned it on it was still doing the same thing until i pressed on the gas pedal again it went back to normal.
I put the car in reverse on my driveway to go to work. I gently pushed the gas pedal like i do every day. The trunk of the car was totaly destroid and the passenger side was badly damaged when the car spun the second time and hit another tree in my front yard. I think when i pushed the gas pedal somehow it got stuck and caused the rapid uncontrol acceleration of the car.
Called honda re: campaign #99i002000 & was told that this is an error and does not apply to the accord but only to the 96 civic. My accord's accelerator seems to have the same problem of "the accelerator pedal feels rough or notchy when you press it" and "and "are required to move the accelerator pedal to make slight speed adjustments". You can really feel this when accelerating from a stopped position and the car either accelerates too slow and/or when adjusting for more acceleration it then accelerates too fast and not smoothly. Find that i have to really focus my attention on the use of the accelerator for fear the car will advance too quickly on ice and/or run into the car ahead of me. Dealer states this is the way the car operates.( dot number: y7lx 00l tire size: 185/65r15 )
Accelerator got stuck for the second time, first while pulling in to park engine revved and brake was applied, vehicle ran into large boulder, causing $ 4000.00 damage.also, on 5 april 2002 at slow speed engine revved, brake was applied, and consumer was not able to stop vehicle. On 3/26/01 monday, while traveling from hwy 80 from fairfield, ca to vallejo ca.my honda accord began to display "unintended acceleration".my foot was not on the accelerator and the cruise control was "off".however, the accord was accelerating by itself.it felt the car was on cruise control.while going uphill, it began to speed up instead of slowing down.the only way i can slow my vehicle was to downshift at 2nd or 3rd gear.my accord is an automatic.i had to periodically press the brakes because the car was approachings speeds up to 80 mph.after 5 miles of sheer terror, i decided to exit on an offramp and while the accord was stopped, the accord began idlingvery high.applying the brakes took effort.because, once i let go, the car began to accelerate by itself.finally, i reached the honda dealership-avery green motors. Until now, the car is still there, because the throttle cable is in back order.the nhtsa campaign id 99i002000 for fuel throttle linkages and control is what i suspect is the defect that is occuring with the accord.originally, the dealer quoted an estimate of $90.00.then, i received a call that i have a bad throttle cable and it should be replaced.the esitmate was approximately $500.00.the manufactuer/dealer should/must fix this problem without any cost to me.according to office of defects investigation-recall database 888-327-4236dealers will replace the throttle cable.honda has decided to conduct a product improvement campaign to replace the throttle cable.owners can contact honda at 800-999-1009.my main question is this.why was i not notified of this defect?i did not receive any written notification or calls for this type of problem occuring to my accord.however, i experienced this firsthand on 3/26/01.a potential accident was in a making, especially during rush hour in the morning - 5:30am pst.if advance warning was given to me, the inconveniece and danger would have been averted.
