Six (6) of the eight (8) internal wrenching bolts the hold the rotor section of the alternator system on my 2006 harley davidson fxdwgi worked loose and two sheered off of the compensator drive assembly causing it to lock my rear wheel and start to send me to the side of the road due to rear wheel lock and a for sure crash into the ditch. I was however able to pull the clutch in and unlock the rear wheel thus regaining control of the motorcycle.i feel,a rider of lesser experience may well have been in a vary serious wreck !i'm told that harley davidson is aware of this defect in the alternator rotor drive system and has done nothing to recall the motorcycles that have this defect.i feel that this is a life threatening defect, because if the rear wheel locks up in a corner and or curve it would cause a total loss of control of the motorcycle. Harley davidson now sells only an up-dated replacement part that is now welded with no retaining bolts but there are still more bikes out there with this same defect and like myself the rider has no idea that there is a poetical life threatening flaw with their motorcycle.i only hope that this will call attention to this defect before someone dies because of it ....there should be a recall on this!!!!
I own a 2006 harley davidson dyna wide glide which i purchased brand new, 25 months later the stator and stator rotor went out. The stator broke away from the spring cover which was held together with 8 screws, the screws then tore up the stator. I talked to many harley davidson dealers and was told it was a bad part as the company changed the part to a new one, the new part has no more screws to hold the part onto the stator rotor, i was also told i was lucky that when it came apart that it did not lock up or i would have been thrown off the bike. I don't know why the company did not do a recall on this part, and the company told me my bike was not covered anymore. I see this part as a factory defect which can end up killing people. I had to fix it myself and it cost me over $600.00. I do have the parts if you would like to see them. This should be listed as a safety recall, thank you.
The contact owns a 2006 harley davidson fxdwgi motorcycle. The contact stated that while riding 70 mph, the check engine and battery warning indicators illuminated as the engine stalled. The contact was able to recharge the batteries and restart the motorcycle. The contactremoved the rotor and the bolts that held the compensating spring were laying inside the rotor, stuck to the magnets. The boltswere spinning and pulled the stator apart, disabling the charging system. The contact was able to replace the rotor and the stator himself. The manufacturer was made aware of the problem. The approximate failure mileage was 37,000.
The contact owns a 2006 harley davis fxdwg motorcycle. The contact stated that while driving, the contact noticed noise coming from the primary. Upon further inspection, found screws loose or imbedded into the alternator.the vehicle was not taken to the dealer. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure and current mileage was 2,000.updated 02-13-13updated 02/19/2013
While ridding rear wheel locked up and than released followed by a grinding noise that seem to come from the left side of the engine.i removed the side cover and found broken wires in the bottom of the cover. These look to be stator wires.i removed the alternator rotor and found loose bolts and a torn up stator.
Screws holding 2 piece rotor assembly came loose on fwy on way to work.heard a faint metallic knock on left side by primary cover. After work fired it up and headed to mechanic shop (non hd). Check engine light and battery light came on so to avoid more damage and poss accident i had aaa tow it to bike shop. They had to replace rotor, stator, volt reg and battery when stator windings shorted out. Hd extremely lucky i did not have an accident because of their faulty design/engineering/quality control issues. Really , a 3 cent screw comes undone at fwy speeds ??? if hd is gonna put out product like this and not issue recalls for known defects, they should prob not keep selling bikes in ca, too many high-priced and hungry personal injury attorneys here. And one of the best just happens to be my neighbor :)))

- the contact stated that the2006 harley davidson wide glidewith 4 failure mileage had a bad vibration in the engine, which seemedto be a transmission problem.he could no longer find neutral, and the handle bars were underrecall 06v474000.the motorcycle was taken to a dealer eight times, with no resolution.
Rear tail light fills with water when riding in wet weather. This causes the taillight bulb to burn out so there are no taillights or brake light working. The back of the bike is completely dark. Also later it affected the turn signals because the contacts corroded and failed to work also. Talked to 3 harley dealers and they said it was a common problem with no real fix. Maybe caulk it or buy a new or different taillight. Or they told me to drill some holes in the bottom of the taillight to let the water drain out. Still not fixing the problem.

06 harley-davidson fxdwgi (still under warr).inner primary bearing fails due to the imperfect alignment of the 06 primary case.h-d is aware of this problem and will not install the new improved '07 primary case (perm. Fix) until the bearing fails twice.when the bearing fails, a loud grinding noise emanates from the primary cover area, and ultimately the bearing will seize or blow which, in a catastrophic case, could result in injury or death. H-d knows this is a recurring problem, but will not fix the problem permanently until there are two breakdowns. This is unacceptable and unsafe.this should be a recall.i know this is a problem because i own an06 fxdwgi and so does my boyfriend.we have the same mileage (within 55 miles).we recently rode from nj to wi.his bike starting making a loud noise in the primary case. The mechanic knew the exact problem.they asked "how many times has it happened"? we answered "this is the first time".dealer indicated that the first time this happens hd will replace the bearing only.we were totally unaware that this was an issue with these bikes at that time. This dealer told me "it probably won't happen to yours - - it's hit and miss". The next day- -approx. 50 miles later (approx. 12,500 mi)my bike had the exact problem (2 out of 2).since we were now ina different city we went to a different hd shop for repair.we told this dealer we lost a full day of vaca the day before dealing with this problem, and because we were so upset, this dealership was willing to install the "07 fix" (entirely new primary case); however, they needed 2 or 3 days to order the parts and complete the work.we had to return to nj the next day, so i didn't have enough time.they suggested i limp home with this fix and then request that my local hd mechanic give us the "07 fix".home now & hd is unwilling to fix the bike until the bearing goes again.this is completely ludicrous. This "patch" is unsafe and unsatisfactory. Updated 10/23/08.
Noise on primary side that changes when clutch pulled in. Dealer replaced inner primary and clutch hub bearings under extended warranty in compliance with harley d's tsb regarding this known defect.

Driving in traffic went to use the brake pushed on it. It went to the ground with the foot peg, my foot hit the ground the rod dug in locked up rear wheel and let go 3 times at 40 mph (messed the car that stopped at last minute for turn). Then i looked down at the pedal and push rodstill connected to mastercylender was bouncing on the ground i was afraid that it was going to lock up again or dig in and flip me off ihe bike. I leaned bike way off to the left to krrp rod off the ground that made it almost impossible to stop with front brake.

The contact owns a 2006 harley davidson fxdwgi.the contact received a recall notice in january of 2006.the contact immediately brought the letter to the dealer, but the vehicle has still not been repaired.one week ago, the dealer claimed to have eight orders pending for the handle bars, but the manufacturer had not sent any to the dealer.the contact stated that this was a safety issue and would like a resolution for this failure.the contact citedrecall campaign # 06v474000 for steering: wheel and handle bar.the current mileage was 5,500 ,and failure mileage was 5,100.

Rear sprocket bolts are known to back out and harley davidson has multiple occurrences regarding the dynas and has yet to inform the public. My bolts backed out twice.once last night and once about 6 months ago.i have photos and documents regarding the 1st occurrence. My harley is now back at the harley dealership with the same exact issue.the service manager knows it is an. Issue but by harley contract he is not able to disclose the issue to the nhtsa which could have cost multiple deaths.
