On 12-27-00 we were driving down the freeway when i noticed flames coming from the readin light/dome light behind the front seat.i blew out the flames, them my husband pushed the light fixture up and blew out the flames still burning inside. The fire damaged the light fixute, the headliner, and my 7-month-old son's carseat (which he was in at the time).on 12-29-00, my husband took the yukon to tri-valley gmc.he spoke with the service directore, patrick madrazo, and showed him the damages.mr. Madrazo said he had to speak with his area service manager, wendell weigel.on 1-8-01, mr madrazo called to say that mr. Weigel determined that the fire was caused by the light being left on too long.my husband had told mr. Madrazo on 12-29-00 and again on 1-8-01 that the light was not on, but he said that gmc was not responsible for the damages.we are sure the light was not on because that light was not even working.on 2-2-98, we took the yukon to herrera gmc (same dealership, different name and location) because that reading light would stop working when moved in the socket.they looked at the yukon and "found the white wire feeding power to the reading light was not making contactat all times."they "removed the light contact and stripped the wire back and reinstalled."the light worked for about a year, then stopped working altogether.we did not take it back for repair because the yukon was out of warranty.on 1-8-01, my husband contacted gm.he explained the situation.on 1-11-01, maja pruden (customer relationship manager) called.i explained the entire situation.she asked if the light was on, and i said no.she wanted me to take the yukon to another dealership to be looked at.i asked if all the dealerships in the area would have the same area service manager, because if so, that would not help.on 1-16-01, ms. Pruden called to say that since there was no one else who could look at it, that gm would have to go with mr. Weigel's determination

Inside the rear axle assembly, the carrier part # 12471391 completly sheared from the pumpkin.the only thing holding the axle and wheel in place was a c-clamp.i did not notice anything wrong with the suspension other than a pulling to the right which i had taken it to the dealer for previously only to be told that there is nothing wrong with it. It finally took out the front bearing and started to make a howling noise upon acceleration.i quit driving the vehicle at this point.if i had not quit driving the vehicle the tire and axle would of completely walked away from the vehicle and could of caused great harm to me and my family.the manufactor was not willing to pay to replace this defective part at first.according to the dealer the carrier was a defective part from the manufactor due to a bad casting.the vehicle was just 85 days outside an extended warrenty purchased with the truck.the dealer did buy a new carrier and had it installed at a 50/50 cost on the labor.i had to buy the new bearings, have the axles checked for tru-ness, have the vehicle towed to the dealer, and find alternative transportation for a month at my expense.i work for the manufactor gm in janesville wisconsin where the truck was built and they did back in this model year have a shipment of defective rear axles come into the plant some were fixed because of a howling noise before they left the manufactor, i believe some were not.the rear carrier shows signs of fractures in the metal that have been there a long timeand also shows new fractures that are rough and where the part finally let loose and sheared completely.i believe that gmc should of covered this defective part 100%.please call me if you need additional info.i still do have the defective part in my possesion.thank you, [xxx]parts of this document have been redacted to protect personally identifiable information pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

Seat track failure.

Front seat fails to lock in place.

The cable release for the rear seats freeze up and the cables break. This could trap someone in the back if riding in rear, or 3rd row seats. If the car catches on fire and a person who can't climb forward over the seats, it would be devastating on what could happen. I feel as this should be a recall on general motors. Mine broke and i am unable to fold my seats forward. This is a bad design and the cables rust and snap when bottom of seat is folded forward, which is supposed to release this way.

No braking action is experienced for over 1 second after emergency hard braking.try brakes hard, with full body weight, when moving 3 mph in simulated emergency and then letting of--the vehicle will not show down.i had a accident last year in which a additional 3-5' of stopping distance would have prevented the accident.i avoided an accident last week by swerving after an elderly lady rolled in front of me while i was traveling 25mph.i avoided it by swering, the brakes did not start slowing the vehicle until it was to late.i have demonstrated this same problem in a friends yukon also.the dealer told me that this was the way the vehicle was designed and that there was nothing that could be done to correct the problem.
