I was driving down a highway at 65 mph when i began to smell smoke. At first i thought that it was just oil spilled on exhaust system. Then the smoke got worse and had a terrible odor. I looked down at the center console and smoke was coming out from around the edges and the ash tray area. I started looking for a pulloff as i was on a country road. As i found one fire started coming up through the gaps. My first thought was that i had a fire that was going to destroy the vehicle. So, once i was stopped i looked for my fire extinguisher but couldn't find it and then i remembered that i had bottled water in the vehicle. I grabbed 4 of them and went back to the drivers side and began to pour water down through the opening in the console that had been caused by the fire melting it. The fire was put out quickly. I then put on gloves and removed the top part of the console that had been mostly destroyed by the fire. In looking into the bottom it appears that small bits of paper, receipts, etc. Had fallen down onto the wiring harness below. My guess is that since i had plugged my xm radio into the cigarette lighter it had heated up the wires which had heated up the papers until they began to burn. I consider this a flaw in the design of the console, the cause being the cracks in the console/ash tray which would allow paper objects to fall onto the wiring harness below and cause a fire. The fire melted about six inches of insulation off the wiring harness and the wires touching each other resulted in fuses being blown. The vehicle is still drivable but as of this writing does not have overhead lights and dashboard lighting available & their is an intermittent ignition issue. I haven't been able to find a replacement wiring harness but suspect that when i do it will cost an arm and a leg. I am trying to repair the wiring by reinsulating each wire and then re-bundling them.
I recently noticed that my spare tire was missing. I took it back to the sear auto center that has been servicing it. When they looked under the car they said that it was common for the yukon spare tire cable to rust and snap off. So i lost the spare tire, spare wheel, and cable system to hold the spare under the vehicle.not sure where or when it happened, but it was in the last 2 years. Just found out about this complaint service. Have also had to replace the brakes and rotors a number of times (an excessive amount), and have had to have the a/c unit repaired twice. The first time i was told that it had the wrong control head.also, whenever i hit a bump i momentarily lose power steering.
Consumer startedvehicle early in the morning andheard a loudnoise. After fifteenminuteswhenvehicle warmed upthere wasno noise. Dealer statedthat this typeofnoisewas common to any vehicle beingstartedearly in the morning.2001 gmc yukon xl denali experiences knocking during cold start up of the engine.the knocking last for about 15 minutes until engine is warmed up.*mr
I purchased my 2001 yukon denali xl on november 22, 2006 and when i was driving it home from the dealership it died at a red light. It started right back up so i didn't think much about it. The very next day the vehicle died during acceleration when i was at about 20 mph. I had a hard time restarting the vehicle. It spit and sputtered. When i did get it started i tried to drive and when i used the brakes it wanted to die or it would idle up and make braking difficult. I could not maintain a constant speed and the engine kept dying. There is no way i could drive this vehicle without crashing it. At this point i decided the vehicle is unsafe to drive. I had it towed to the dealership. The next business day, they could not find anything wrong with it. Its obvious there is a serious safety concern that is intermittent. It is now sitting at a different mechanics shop trying to find the problem. I have read so many complaints about these similar vehicles with similar problems. However, they have been broken down into different categories like yukon, yukon xl, yukon denali, yukon denali xl, or just denali. The complaints are also listed in different categories of "complaint type". Nobody knows what "complaint type" to list it under because they don't know exactly what is causing it. Obviously there is an issue with unknown origin and resolution. And with the complaints being broken down into different vehicle and type categories, maybe it isn't realized these vehicles are all built on the same platform and have the same problem. This is a serious safety problem and something needs to be done. I can't even drive my new vehicle.
While driving at 70 mph consumer heard a sound, and vehicle lost power and stalled.dealer examined the vehicle, and determined that the timing beltbroke.
Vehicle rolls while in park. Had parking pawl replaced, problem persisted. Problem is more obvious the greater the incline. Vehicle is not freewheeling but has some resistance.
The contact owns a 2001 gmc yukon xl denali. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 15 mph, there was a grinding noise emerging from the front end differential of the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and the diagnosis was that the front differential failed, but the dealer would not repair the vehicle and informed that the vehicle needed to be inspected by a transmission specialist. The failure reoccurred on three occasions. The approximate failure mileage was 200,000. The vin was not available.
My complaint pertains to heated seats - i was driving home from pa on 3/16/08 in the early am.my 17 yr old son was in the front passenger seat and a friend of his, mike was asleep on the middle row of seats.he had a blanket wrapped up to make a pillow and laid it on the seat.my son and i begin to smell a foul odor and assumed it was the manf. Plants that we were passing by.it wasn't until mike was awakened by the heat on his hand, that we realized the seat was smoldering.mike did receive minor burns on his hand/arm.when mike moved the blanket, it was burnt all the way through and resembled "swiss cheese".the seat has a burn in it the size of a softball.we were able to extinguish the smoldering with water bottles that we had in the car. Had the blanket not been flame retardant, i hate to think what could have happened to mike's face and head!also, the thought of a baby or small child sitting in that back seat, makes me ill.
Coming to a stop sign the brake line blew out on the left rear resulting in the truck not stopping and rolling through a stop sign.had there been a child on a bike, a person walking or another vehicle coming there would have been an accident.upon inspection by a mechanic informed me that all my brake lines are rusted out and need to be changed.im still waiting for a quote but its said to be over $1500!gm should be accountable and these trucks should be recalled!
We were traveling north up the saw mill parkway from bronx ny. This parkway is two lanes with 3-4 lights depending where you get on, so i had 3 lights going north. At the first light i notice the brakes were week. Second light had the same no pressure brake peddle, and then the third light i had no pressure on the brake peddle couldn't stop at the red light and had seen the cars coming from the left into the intersection so that made me swerve hard to the right and finally came to a stop. The right front brake line blew and fluid was leakingall over. I had both of my daughters, brother in-law, and a friends son in the truck going to a family party in connecticut around 12pm.i had a couple things going for me other than being lucky, a good driver and knowing the highway very well. I made it to the mechanic shop and saw that all my brake lines are rusted up that the mechanic didn't want to touch the others cause they might be very brittle and will break very easy. This truck is not my main vehicle and is in very good shape till i looked underneath.

The motor on the antilock brakes would not shut off when denali when the engine was not running. I had to disconnect battery for it to stop running
While driving my 2001 denali xl my brakes failed and was fortunate that i was not in traffic.once i crept home i was able to see the under carriage and there were large amount of corrosion on all the equipment.car is still laid up until i can afford repaired.
(recall 05v-379) abs light has been coming on intermittently for about 4 years now. We have taken to numerous mechanics to no avail. Now after looking into recalls, i find that there actually was a solution, but we were never notified because we don't live in the correct area of the country. But we do live close to the affected area. I purchased the car used only 3 years after it was made. This vehicle could have been in the affected area prior to our purchase. We would like to be included in the recall. My teenage daughter drove this vehicle to school and dropped off our 8 year old to school for two years. This recall should have been expanded so that i was aware of it to keep my family safe.
The contact owns a 2001 gmc yukon xl denali.while driving 25 mph, the contact noticed that the abs and brake indicators were illuminated on the instrument panel.the vehicle had not experienced any braking failure while driving.the vehicle was taken to a local repair shop and the technician stated that the abs was malfunctioning, the speed sensor was failing, and the speed connectors were corroded.the vehicle was not repaired.the contact called the manufacturer and was informed that the vehicle was included in a recall pertaining to the speed sensor and advised her to take the vehicle to the dealer for repair.once at the dealer, they refused to make the repairs because her vin was not included in the recall.the contact called the manufacturer back and they confirmed that the vehicle was not included and stated that no repairs would be made.the nhtsa campaign id number was unknown.the failure mileage was 140,000 and current mileage was 146,000.
I have a 2001 gmc / yukon xl denaliwhich has the same issue as the nhtsa recall campaign 05v379000/ nhtsa action number: pe05020 the brakes are exhibiting this issue.when brought to the dealer, my vin does not "fall" into recall.my concerns is that my vehicle cannot bake safely and should be part of this recall.
Problems with 2001 denali xl/ suv died and there was loss of brakes, steering and acceleration.*mrvehicle was at idle when it died the first time. Dealership couldn't diagnose the problem but knew it had to do with the fuse. Consumer was given fuses but they all failed within 50 miles. Vehicle returned to the dealership. It was diagnosed and the electronic throttle control module was replaced. Third failure occurred while traveling 65 mph on a highway when the brakes, steering and acceleration failed. The consumers escaped unharmed. They requested an investigation and recall on the vehicle.*ph
On june 11, 2011 i drove my 2001 gmc yukon xl from carle place ny to summit nj. The trip consisted of mainly highway mileage. Everything seemed fine until i reached my destination. I made a left into a parking lot and the brake pedal became unresponsive.i pulled into a spot and jammed on the brakes. The vehicle rolled and hopped the curb and bumped into a fence. I broke a few boards.i put the truck in neutral, rolled back into the spot, and used the parking\emergency break to stop. I got out, open the hood and saw i was low on brake fluid. I looked down and there was a large puddle of brake fluid under my vehicle. I looked under and saw brake fluid dripping out. I reached under to see where the drip was coming from. It appears the line burst.called aaa and had the truck towed back to ny.upon further inspection, i noticed all the break lines completely rusted. It was a matter of time the other lines would fail. If i drove another mile in nj i would have been in an accident. Thank god i was not on the highway when this happened. This definitely need to be investigated. There should be a high standard when it comes to brakes. Stopping a vehicle is more critical than making it move.i called gmc and they said no recalls exist for my vehicle. They're solution is to visit a service center for repair. 99% sure i will be eating this expense.
As vehicle is slowing to a stop, the abs engages lifts the brake pedal, essentially allowing the vehicle to roll forward, and requiring a quick reaction to strongly depress the brake pedal to stop the vehicle. This is caused by a faulty and corroded abs speed sensor, which has been recalled on these vehicles from 2002, but the recall does not include the 2001 year.another known issue is faulty abs modules in these vehicles which turn on the dashboard brake and abs warning lights periodically although there is nothing wrong with the brakes or abs.
Low speed brake failure resulting in a rear end collision.i was approaching a stop light as the 5 vehicle in line to travel through the light.i was braking lightly to control my speed as to assume my positionin line to travel through the intersection.as the light turned green i did not need to come to a completestop and was approaching the fourth car.the third car in the line suddenly braked hard in the intersection causing the fourth car in front of me to brake hard. I attempted to perform an emergency stop but i experienced a hard brake pedal with no brakes and the inability to slow down.this resulted in a rear end collision for which i was at fault.i have spoken to several other owners of vehicle similar to mine which also have experienced similarfailure but without the crash.i have failedin several attempts to bring this to the attention of gm through the dealership and a product allocation request.my only avenue now is through your organization or a legal class action matter.

01 gmc yukon denali xl - spare tire hoist cable broke and spare tire fell from vehicle while in operation. Luckily i was not on the highway and nobody was hurt but this could have potentially been very serious.
