My 2002 gmc sonoma's running lights go off when the turn signals are used. My dealer & gm tells me that this is normal. The whole purpose of running lights is to been seen. This is most important when changing lanes or turning. Gm should recall these pickup trucks an correct this situation.

The contact owns a 2002 gmc sonoma. The contact stated that the ignition key disengaged from the ignition switch when in the on position. In addition, the contact stated that when the key was in the off position, the vehicle remained powered on. As a result, the battery became inoperable. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 72,000.updated 03/30/15*lj updated 6/22/2015

Vehicle would not start 7am. Had driven night before. Original battery seem dead however the original battery in vehicle displayed green light to determine if charge held or not. Tow truck driver tried to jumpstart vehicle. Unable. Had vehicle toweddealer replaced with 6yr battery. He never mention a electrical short or anyother issues.he advised me that it was normal for the battery to go out with 32500 miles, had the truck since 12-29-2002. This doesnt seem normal to me, had previous issue with vehicle engine shutting down, headlights, daytime running lites, cd/radio(i'm on my 3d radio) abs problem not solved also my vehicle seems to run hot, once it reaches the center mark. Brought this up to the tech during the test drive he told me it a fan comes on. . feel a great change in the vehicle driving experience until it cools down. It seems it takes a long time for my vehicle to cool off per gauges in panel . If this is the norm i dont know what to think.trust the dealer, orchange service center. I like my truck. It is the reason i bought it.but it has become a monster, see my other complaints.

No summary listed for above vehicle.

Nar 03-24-2003mr.the consumer stated the vehicle ran out of gas on 3 occasions.the first 2 timed the gas gauge rear 1/8th of a tank and the last time it read 1/4th of a tank.t he dealership determined it was not repairable and was a design flaw.

I ran over a pice of a tire in the road. The steel belt apparently penetrated the upper side toward the front of the vehicle, of thin plastic fuel tank. There is a shroud between the drive shaft and the tank, but it does not extend to the front end of the tank "its 2 inches too short" and there is no protection for the front or bottem. The tank was barely scratched but was leaking through a pin hole. These tanks should be protected better or made if thicker plactic. A single strand of wire should not cause a hole in the fuel tank. The dealership stated it was not covered under the warranty and sugested i should patch the hole with "jb weld" epoxy as the new tank was $800.00.

2002 gmc sonoma zr-2 extended cab door entry handle has failed 5 times over past 6 years. Part has been replaced. Old part is available.

Door latch for my extended cab door has broken for the 2nd time since i've owned it, which is 2004 and the lasy one lasted only 2 years.

I have owned this vehicle since 2002, bought it brand new.the third door handle has been replaced 4 times, today it broke again.if someone were in the back of the cab and had to get out, they could not.this handle is plastic and breaks continuously.the chevy house informed me that they have this part in stock all the time because it happens quite often.they replaced it 4 times while it was under warranty.it is not under warranty now, so i will have to pay for it.this item should be corrected and made into a heavier material and made a recall.

Third door latch broke. Contacted dealer and gmc customer service. Told no recalls on latch. I would have to pay dealer to determine what caused latch to break if part defective gmc would pay for fix but not for dealers labor for diagnosing problem. Dealer said it would take 30 minutes minimum to 1 hour and half at 75 dollars a hour. Talked to another dealer service manager, told "repair them all the time".took vehicle to local body shop who also said"repair them all the time".read on internet auto bulletin boards that other people having same problems.

(1) loading parcels into bed of truck.(2) tailgate support cable broke, causing tailgate to fall on rear bumper for support, this caused damage to tailgate and parcels to fall on ground.person loading parcels received minor bruises and cuts. (2a) tailgate latch handle broke and fell on ground, tailgate can not be opened.(3) tailgate closed waiting research on how to repair latch and replace cables.

The clutch failed which caused the vehicle to accelerate when engaged.*nlm

- the contact was driving on the freeway at approximately 65 mph when his clutch failed on his 2002 gmc sonoma.the road conditions were wet.the clutch stopped engaging, the engine was revving but none of the gears would engage.the contact had the vehicle towed to his home.the tow driver said he could smell the clutch burning.the contact checked the clutch fluid the next morning and 3/4 of it was missing.the contact had the vehicle towed to a clutch repair shop.the vehicle was repaired.the contact was shown theflyheel that melted.the ford dealer told the contact the clutch burned out due to normal wear and tear.

The transfer case leaked, which caused the actuator to short andleaked oil internally.oil was seen in the lighter, ash tray and on the passenger side floor.

I currently own a 2002 gmc sonoma zr5 4wd pickup. Shortly after purchase the vent controls for the a/c unit started to malfunction. This did not seem to be a big deal until last week when i was told the problem had been traced to a vacuum module on the transfer case that controls switching in and out of 4wd. The dealer replaced to defective part and returned the vehicle to me. On monday, i was driving home on the interstate, took my foot of the gas and started braking for the off ramp. As i was coming around the sharp curve on ramp, the transfer case tried to switch from 2wd to 4wd. As you may be aware, trucks do not handle the same in 4wd. My concern is the fact that had the roads been wet, it very possible that the jerk of switching to 4wd on a sharp curve would cause the truck to lose traction and spin out of control. It should also be noted that dealer has informed me that it may take up to three weeks to obtain the parts and repair damage to my transfer case and a/c controls caused by this defect but the factory has made no modifications to the control module and this may happen again at any time. I have informed the dealer that i will not accept the truck back until gmc can assure me that this defect has been corrected and warranty any future problems that may arise. The truck currently has 24,000 miles but only had about 12,000 when the first module started malfunctioning. *nlm

Consumer was about to enter the vehicle, put the seat belt on, and was about to put the key in the ignition when the seat back failed completely back, laying the consumer down on his back. Contacted the dealer, and was told the he should contact the better business bureau.

Problem-i dont feel safe in my truck-abs brakes is not working properly when coming in contact with a bump in the road or pothole cover at times.on going incident since purchasing the vehicle new with 127 miles. Despite what the dealer service department has told me, this is normal for abs brakes, this is a problem for me.they have either incorrectly documented or did not document at all my complaint. When stopping at a light and the right brake hit a pothole cover or bump in the road, at times, the rt brake will release and the left brake will "brake". The vehicle will jerk on the rt side causing the vehicle to move forward and swerve. As my vehicle comes to a stop, mybrakepedal pushes down to the floor i find myself stopped at an angle. This is as exact as i can get with what happens. This is a persistent problem. I try to avoid objects on the road but cannot see them all. My vehicle has been serviced and they cannot find anything they say except bulletin for cleaning brake sensors. This visit is the only time my problem has been documented. When i picked up my truck the last visit, i advised the service tech i do not want this problem anymore and reexplain the problems. Please be advised on march 20,04, i filed previous complaint at this site and complained about the abs brakes. Please note when i first had my truck oil servicedi complained about the brakes, i was told abs worked this way. The pedal goes down to the floor.i stopped by the dealership 05/24/04 to file a complaint.tony wrote the problem on scratchpaper, i got a copy i cannot continue to avoid potholes or bumps, especially at night. I will either rearend some one, get injured or lose my life. I dont feel safe in my truck. I had to explain to my daughter about the problem to avoid an accident.she experience the same problem.my vehicle is still under warranty.ineed my situation investigated.

Letter informing of the poor, irresponsible service the consumer received at a pontiac-gmc dealership service center.(nar)*ph

While braking for a yield intersection on 3/30/2012, approx. 10am, in dry and clear conditions, brakes on 2002 gmc sonoma failed. Vehicle would not stop despite hard pressure on the brake pedal and ran through intersection almost colliding with another vehicle. When managed to get vehicle stopped and pulled to side of road, both the abs and brake failure warning lights were illuminated on the dash. Upon turning the ignition off and restarting, both the abs and brake failure warning lights cleared and were no longer illuminated. Check engine light never illuminated. Took vehicle to both independent mechanic and gm dealership mechanic and both confirmed an odb ii trouble code of c0265 had been generated.this code, i was told, indicates failure of the ebcm (electronic brake control module) of the abs system.apparently, this problem is well-known to gm and it has issued several technical service bulletins on the problem, but no recalls.independent mechanic could not replace the ebcm as lacked the proprietary gm software needed to program it.gm dealership mechanic--while confirming generation of the c0265 trouble code--refused to replace the ebcm instead saying i should "just drive it around and see if the problem happens again." this seemed a very dismissive approach by gm to a known problem on certain of their abs vehicles as the first brake failure on 3/20/2012 almost caused a wreck.not anxious to find out what the second failure the gm dealer wants me to "wait for" would result in.

The contact owns a 2002 gmc sonoma.while driving approximately 15 mph and approaching a stop light, the vehicle did not stop when the brake pedal was depressed.the brake pedal extended to the floor and the contact rear ended another vehicle.there were no injuries.the contact's son diagnosed the vehicle as having brake line failure.the air bags did not deploy at the time of impact.the current and failure mileages were 30,000.

While driving. The consumer heard a squeaking sound. The consumer found that the vehicle needed brakes at 29000 miles on the driver's side. The consumer took the vehicle in for an inspection and found that the vehicle needed new brakes on both sides. However, the dealer did not want to put factory brakes on the vehicle they want to use a product call dura stop. Please provide any further information.

The contact owns a 2002 gmc sonoma. The contact noticed that the brake lines were corroded while inspecting the vehicle. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer for a diagnostic test. The contact had not experienced brake failure, but was concerned it could suddenly occur. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 75,000.

Dt:contact owns a 2002 gmc sonoma. Last week the abs light came on.at the first stop sign the car veered to the right as he was pressing on the brakes. He went to a service station that was about a half mile down the road. They indicated it was a sensor for the abs brakes.he went to his dealership and told them his story and they said that vehiclewas not under warranty and there was norecall. The dealership indicated it was normal for the vehicle to pull to the right.theowner's manual stated that if theabsfailed there would benormal braking capabilities, but consumer's vehicle did not have it. Updated 01/10/06.

Tonight, a rainynight in texas i had to brakes suddenly.finally my abs brakes worked properly .there was no heavy pull to the left swerving into the next lane, as it did from 2003-2005. There was pulsation from the braking mechanism that i never felt before like i told it should work. I didn't have to fight with the wheel to keep control. It never swerved like numerous timesbefore out of the over 100 times my abs brakes malfunctioned , this time finally it worked the way abs should work during a wet bumpy road.last year after many phone calls about my many issues,gm corp and the dealer finally was willing to check out my vehicle again with abs brakes and other issues. I drove my vehicle at my cost from texas to georgia. The dealer reported my vehicle's issues were repaired.the drl issue (turns off while using the turn signal, stupid defect that they have in the manual. As if it normal. I still don't know any other car that does this ) the problem is still there but the electrical issue is gone. When i had the electrical problem it affected the entire vehicle over the time i had the truck. I even had my radio replaced over nine times. My last issue was the system not recognizing the check engine light being on and driving from ga to tx and back before it would go out. I drove 2000 miles. ....abs brakes."what ever the dealer did to my car to repair the swerving issues. They need to do a recall for those people who have malfunctioning abs brakes on the sonoma vehicle.there is a defect and it should be acknowledged.mine was fixed after 3 years.these brakes were defective and dangerous until repaired.i have avoided many accidents by beingvery careful ; offensive and defensive driving. Have gm fix those faulty abs brakes. Please note you can find my many complaints under gmc sonoma 2002.

Dt: 2002 gmc sonoma. Consumer complained aboutabs brake problem. Whiledriving 30 mphonsilver spring drive in milwaukee, wisconsin consumerapplied brakes and the vehicle slid due to the wheels locking up. The road was dry and it was day time. This happenedonjuly 12, 2005. Consumerdid not believe that speed of the vehicle had to be slow or fast for this to happen. He had no idea what caused abs failure.

On my 2002 gmc sonoma truck the front driver side brake pad was worn off and the rotor severely scored and ruined by 14,000 miles, to the extent that the gmc dealer declared it unsafe to drive. Mean while the passenger side front brake pad was largely intact and the rotor perfect. Also the abs system failed to stop truck promptly or smoothly on several occasions.

Abs light comes on when coming to a full stop. The vehicle performs as normal until the first full stop after starting engine. Vehicle will not stop properly as antilock brake computer will not let the driver fully apply the brakes.after a few stopping attempts the abs light comes on indicating the computer cannot sense a signal from the speed sensor. The computer then turns off antilock function and allows normal braking until engne is turned off and computer is reset. The process repeats at each vehicle startup. This condition could pose a safety hazard upon coming to a full stop and cause an accident. Suggest manufacturer look into product assembly and/or manufacturing defects for brake speed sensors on all sonoma/s-10 or equivalently equipped vehicles.

The front/rear brake rotors wearout prematurely, causing extended stopping distance.dealership repaired the problem.

On 1/25/06 i took my 2002 gmc sonoma pickup truck to allen gmc in laguna niguel, ca to have them check out a clicking noise i was hearing in the steering system.in addition, the steering wheel had excessive play in it.the dealership called me and informed me that the intermediate steering shaft (gmc p/n 26056116)needed to be replaced at a cost of 244.90 plus 188.00 for labor.i had the repair done and the problem was resolved for a while but in december 2007 i noticed that the same symptoms (clicking noise as well as excessive play in the steering wheel) were back.i took the truck to allen gmc with a copy of the invoice (inv # gccs358357)forthe original repair.the service writer acknowledged that the problem had returned but said that the repair and parts were out of the 12 month warranty period.i told him i was dissatisfied with their inability to fix the problem at their cost and was given the phone number to their national customer satisfaction line (800 gmc-truc).i called this number on 2/15/08 and told the customer service rep (terri at ext 21714) about the problem that i had fixed and that it had returned less than 2 years later.she gave me a file number of 71-607365535 and told me i would hear back from her in a few days.on 2/18/08, terri called back to inform me that due to the age of the vehicle and the amount of time that elapsed since the repair that there was nothing that gmc would do for me.i explained to her that it is unreasonable to expect a customer to pay numerous times for a gmc part that clearly was poorly designed.i told her that i found several incidences on the internet of other people having this same problem with the same part and that gmc needs to acknowledge that they have a defective part they need to fix at their expense.since this defective part is an integral part of the steering system, i think it is is imperative that gmc fix it and not cause the consumer to pay for their poor design.

This vehicle is equipped with tilt steering.consumer states that the steering wheel cannot be used in the full tilt position because it obstructs full extension of the right foot to the brake pedal, making braking difficult.consuemr feels this is a dangerous situation.the only reply from the dealer and gmc is don't use the steering wheel in its full tilt.*jg

The 3rd door on ext cab. The door does not open.was told by dealer this is major complaints for these 3rd models. Have to replace pins or something, but it keeps happening.this a a life & death hazard & defect. Why hasn't this been recalled? in an accident, (rear ended) the door could not be opened.

Support cables broken on tailgate. Both have rusted away on 2002 gmc sonoma truck.

Tailgate support cables broken.

Both tailgate cables rotted and broke in half on my 2002 gmc sonoma, on 05/09/2005.there was no load on the tailgate at the time, but both brokat at the same time (simply lowering the tailgate).

I own a 2002 gmc sonoma pick-up. I had the cables on the tailgate break when climbing into the back of the truck. I have found articles on this subject on the internet from news agencies that say gmc would be sending out a letter to owners of the gmc sonoma's and s10 that would warn of the problem and offer an inspection of the cables and replacement of the cables. I never received the letter and the dealerships seem to know nothing about it.

Dt:consumer complainedabouttailgate support straps.he owned a gmc sonoma 2002. On august 4, 2005 consumer lettailgate down and discovered that one ofsupport strapsbroke , and the other onerusted andwas about to break. He thoughtthat wasthe way the straps were bending when tailgate was locked in the up position. This caused the coating to collapse, allowing the cables to rust.

On 30 oct. 05, i was preparing to load a motorcycle on the back of my gmc sonoma.after opening-up the tailgate on my gmc sonoma, i proceeded to step on the tailgate. Both tailgate cables snapped causing the tailgate to slam down on the bumper causing me to fall to the ground.i was not injured, but was thankful that it broke before and not during the loading of the truck.both cables snapped exactly in the same spot.cables showed signs of corrosion inside the cable.

Dt*:the contact stated while standing on the tailgate, both cables fractured.there is a nhtsa recall, # 06v066000, regarding the tailgate cable; however, it is not included in the recall due to the vin.

My spare tire on my 2002 gmc sonoma pickup fell out of its carrier. It rolled across two lanes of traffic, luckily traffic was light and no one was struck by the run away wheel. I appears the cable that secures the spare on the truck parted.this is the first time the spare has been off the truck.

The spare tire fell off while driving.the wire cable snapped.

I noticed in a reflection off the vehicle in front of me that when i turned my turn signal (doesn't matter which one, right or left), that my day time running lights go off.this started out as only happening on occasion and then proceed to get worse.by february 17, 2003, the day time running lights would go off every time i used my turn signal.i took my vehicle into the dealer on that date and was informed after they had contacted gm, that it was normal for it to do that.i bought the truck in julyof 2002 and it had not done it up until that point, i know because i have followed my husband's vehicle several times and he would have noticed it.anyway, the dealer showed me in the owners manual where it says some vehicles may do this and they refused to do anything about it although it had never done this before.i find this unsafe as it would be very distracting to oncoming drivers plus the fact that i worry something is wrong in the electrical system.

While driving in a slow rain, the drivers side wiper arm came loose and flew all the way past the windshield to the left of the vehicle.although it was still attached, it would not move.fortunately i was less that a mile from home and drove the vehicle home.my husband got a wrench, repositioned the wiper arm and tightened it down.i was able to then go to work.i contacted my dealer about what had happened and he told me that they have that happen quite often with this model and that i should carry a 13 mm wrench with me so if it happened again i could fix it like my husband had.he didn't want to see the vehicle in his shop or write a ticket for it.they told me it was considered normal because a lot of these vehicles did this.my concern is for safety,if this had been a hard rain storm and i had been going 60 or 65 mph when this occurred, it could have caused a terrible accident.i believe this needs to be looked into as the dealer says that this problem if very common for this model.
