Driver was going approx. 40mph down the rural highway in heavy rain and the truck in front of her came to a stop. By the time the driver of the sonoma saw the truck it was too late to stop and not hit the stopped vehicle. The driver of the sonoma hit the stopped truck and totaled the sonoma. At no point did the driver airbag deploy.

While driving all electrical shuts down engine , everything!!!!!!!!!

Positive battery terminal on ac delco side post 72month battery popped out of battery, resulting in an acid spill. I returned to the dealership that last performed warranty work on the truck to inform them of my concerns. I feel the technician that worked on the vehicle over-tightened the bolt, causing the lead terminal to come loose. Because the gm warranty was expired, ac delco informed me that the 5 year warranty on the battery had also expired(at 3 years), so this wasn't their problem. I feel this is more than just a problem for me, this should be looked at as a problem for everyone. First as a potential fire and safety issue, and secondly as an enviromental issue, sulfuric acid and it's fumes can cause fire and death. Ac delco didn't seem to care about any of this, i was only told that they would sue me for slander if i was to talk about this problem.

Ignition coil has a pronounced "white strip" by the coil core that is obviously insulation that is decayed and opening up to expose the windings. Factory tells the dealer it is normal. It is obvious to the untrained eye that the windings are just under the surface of the insulation. It is a suspected problem that hascaused erratic engine running characteristics.

Ignition failed, left consumer stranded

Consumer states during the last sixth months on several occasions the windshield wipers, when activated, work for a few seconds and then stop, causing a visibility problem, consumer has roated the wiper knob to high, turned it off, and slowed it down, neither of which relieve the problem, dealer stated motor needed replaced, however consumer feels that the motor was not the problem, so he is continuing to drive the vehicle as is.serpentine belt failed and was replaced.

The system that holds the spare tire broke at the spring bolt/cable connection. Many cars and trucks had to swerve to avaoid the tire once it came out from under the truck! gmc says they won't fix it, they don't have enough history with the pick up. I bought it used from a friend . That tire came out at 25 mph!!! it was a real scary situation!

I bought this truck off wally armour in alliance ohio.after getting it home we found out there was front end trouble,it shook real bad, also head light did not come on all the time and the mirror on drivers door shimmied bad and mirror on window was falling off.this vehicle is a 1998 sonoma gmc.i took the vehicle back as a lemon and now they are charging me over a thousand dollars worth of taxes besides ruining my credit to nearly zero.what can i do?is there defaults on this vehicle?

The vehicle stalled, consumer was informed the fuel pump and fuel filter needed to be replaced.

1998 gmc sonoma pick up with 4 cylinder automatic transmission. The fuel line mounting bracket located on the bell housing rubbed a hole in the fuel line allowing gasoline to drip on the hot exhaust pipe. It took three dealers and a couple of months to find the leak. General motors stated this was normal wear and refused to repair or assist in repair with estimated cost of $400-$600. This leak presented an extreme fire/explosion hazard. I have never seen or heard of a gas line rubbing through on any vehicle. There is no way this is anything but a design/manufacturing problem.

I have had two of the six injectors on this truck replaced. Each at a different time, now, it seems as if more than one has gone on the blink. Not sure what the heck is happening, but it is rather expensive to keep replacing these one at a time. I also dug up a website that shows there is a known issue with the injectors; however, i believe it may only apply to california vehicles. The article is at the following address: http://www.arb.ca.gov/newsrel/nr021103.htm*la

While driving 65 mph and without warningthe driver's side door latch failed, causing the driver's side door to open.the consumer was able to maintain control of the vehicleand pulled over.the consumer took the vehicle to the dealer for inspection, and the mechanic could not duplicate the problem.the mechanic suggested that the problem was the factory's fault.the consumer was also told that this vehicle was known for a knocking noise around the tires in which the consumer's vehicle had experienced. *sc

While traveling about 55mph andhood flew off and hit rear windshield.

Hood has released by itself while driving at 45 mph, causing hood to fly open and obstruct consumer's view. Dealer notified, and informed consumer nothing could be found.

I own a 1998 gmc sonoma pickup.both tailgate cables failed by breaking in half because of rust.i have not replaced them and am currently not using my tailgate because each one costs $42.00 (they are part of the latch assembly).gm has recalled tailgate cables on full size trucks - does anybody beleive the cables on their smaller trucks were any better?i am a beleiver the same problem exists but they sell less small trucks so there are fewer complaints.i would like to see mine corrected like many other gm truck owners have.

Parking brake spring return failed.yh

Whenever the parking brake was pressed it would come back up.the parking brake has not been repaired.

The complaint is about my transmission in my 1998 gmc sonoma.engine service light came on so i took the truck in for service. I was told that the transmission needed to be rebuilt or replaced as per the service bulletin. A $2,200-dollar fix. The truck is not quite 3years old though i have 59000 miles on it. I can tell you that im the only one that has driven this truck and it has hauled no more than groceries i called the customer care center and gm has said they would pay 40 percent of the repair ref case number:c05710638. At first i thought this was better than nothing. But i believe there is a major problem with thetransmission and general motors should stand behind the product due to the nature of the failure, warranty or not. This is not right. This is a major part of the vehicle and should not have gone bad this quickly. I will continue to do all the research i can to show that this failure is not normal. If a service bulletin was issued then i think it was a known problem, gm has admitted that they have seen this problem before but because the vehicle is out of warranty this is all will do.

While driving, the consumer heard a windingnoise coming from the front of the vehicle.while shifting the transmission hesitated, then down shifted on its own.the consumerdrove it to a transmission shop.the mechanic informed the driver that the transmission needed to be replaced.please fill in additional information.

Transmission is slipping out of gear and drops into neutral for 1-2 seconds, and then goes back into gear, causing a revving inengine. Consumer contacted dealer in july 2000, but could not determine cause.currently, consumer is having problems with transmission sticking in gear. Same dealerclaims transmission needs to be replaced.consumer states stuck gear resulted in an engine brake condition in a reduced speed zone where vehicle speed is suddenly reduced with no brake lights on, consumer found tsb 99-07-30-005 regarding this problem and stated the recommendation was to replace the valve body assembly, however this was not been done until the valve body assembly failed which caused 3rd gear to lock on the highway, consume rwants gm to take responsibility for this problem.

Transmission was noisy at any speed, dealer determined a bearing needed to be replaced in transmission. Mileage at repair was 30000.at this time bearing neeed to be replaced again.

I am the original owner of a 1998 gmc sonoma purchased new in february of 1999. Vehicle properly maintained driven as a commuter vehicle approximately 7,400 miles per year. It is equipped with the 4l60e transmission, which is clearly defective. 59,000 miles begins to surge and slip. Acceleration is greatly reduced with harsh shifting. Greatly compromising my safety. Entire transmission needs to be replaced at a cost of $3100.00 gmc will not reimburse repairs to my vehicle. My claims were "denied" by the district representative.

Vehicle shakes as to be unsafe to drive.repair center says that the clutch plate is binding.extended warrenty does not cover as it is a "wear" component.seems unreasonable to me that a clutch plate would wear out after only 50,000 miles.

Unccceptable maintenance required., unsatisfactory dealer repairs, service, and satisfaction.no safety efects listed in the summary.

Tansmission problem...whinning, not able to shift into gear/ transmission replaced twice/pilot bearing bushing replaced/crank shaft replaced twice/ now refuses to perform maintenance on truck.have pregnant daughter driving vehicle cannot shift again.this is the seventh time i have taken in for said repairs.worried about safety of pregnant daughter.

Passenger seat does not lock into place.passengers slide forward and backward with almost every press of the gas and brake.along with the broken recliner lever(both sides) which has left the seat in a semi-reclined position, my passengers are in for a not so pleasant ride.

The driver's seat recliner handle broke off inside the joint; had to drive in a very uncomfortable position until it was replaced! very expensive to replace; $300.00 at the dealership. The metal seemed to be soft and fairly easy to break; i do not change the seat position often.8jb

On our 1998 gmc sonomawe have replaced the windshield wiper motor and board. The wipers still have a ghost in them and delay does not work most of the time and high speed when on low speed, erratic behavior on wipers. Won't turn on or off on occasion. Was there a recall on also on the passenger seat? the lever broke right off the first time we used it. Cheaply built handles. Please send me a list of recalls on this vehicle please for our own safety as this vehicle is driven daily on open highways.

Handle to adj. Driver seatback broke off at metalic hub with very little pressure, seat locked in forward upright postion while driving and could not be returned to driving position

The handles that recline both the driver and passenger seats broke off with very little force.my passenger seat is always slightly reclined now and my driver's seat is straight up and down.the dealership refuses to replace them because there is not a recall and according to them its normal wear and tear.my warranty is up but i feel this goes beyond warranty and is a defect from the manufacturer.

Seat handle fell off when consumer pushed it to recline the seat.nlm

Handle to change seat position broke.with so many documented reports of this happening to other consumers why is this not recalled?

Driver pushed handle to move driver's seatback forward, pushed handle to return seatback to sitting position when handle broke off locking the seatback in a forward position.

The recliner seatback handle is attached to a sub-standard metal part which has broken on this truck twice since november 1999. In both instances it appears the metal portion that the handle is screwed into is not a high grade metal and thus can be broken in two pieces from regular use.per our service advisors at the pontiac/gmc dealership, they've indicated this was the part that used the lowest grade material thus they have seen more of this part break on this truck than anything else.also, the service representative indicated this was the second truck with this problem this week.i definately need to know if this could be a problem in the long run with these trucks in question.i may not be the first, but i am certainly not the last to report this problem.

My 1998 gmc sonoma developed a braking problem - pulling hard right.the vehicle (under warranty - 15,000 miles) was taken to the dealership to correct the problem.the front rotors were turned, pads deglazed, wheel bearings repacked, rear drums turned and shoes adjusted to correct the problem.the cost to me was $217.i have never experienced brake problems at such low milage on any vehicle i have ever owned.i am convinced that a defect exists in the braking system that gm is attempting to blame on the consumer.

In april 2006, a brake line on my 1998 gmc sonoma pickup broke when i applied the brakes at approx 50 mph.i had to stop rather quickly due to traffic backing up on an interstate highway.when the brake line burst, my brake pedal went to the floor and i had no brakes.prior to this happening, the brakes were working fine.fortunately, i was able to swerve into another lane and downshift (std shift) to avoid an accident.my mechanic replaced the broken line (from hydraulic abs to junction) and also the rear brake pads and rotors.the truck had 107,000 miles on it when this occurred.i decided to report this because i am concerned that it might happen to others, resulting in a serious accident.

Truck makes popping noise in front end when turning or stopping hard.vehicle has had 6 service orders for this same problem.this amounts to about 15 visits to the shop.i have tried three different gmc service centers. To date they have still not succeeded at solving the problem.the problem 1st occurred 3-20-99 with 6045 miles.every time they have either tighten, lubed or replaced something.the problem always reoccurs shortly after service.currently they are ordering some more parts to replace.between this and other problems i have had this truck in the shop so much that i have had to purchase a second vehicle (not a gm product!)so i have something to drive when this one is in the shop. I truly feel i have a lemon in my driveway.i can submit full dealer documentation upon request.

The consumer has been experiencing problems with rear sway bar.while drivingvehicle would sway from side to side.the manufacturer has been contacted.

I was driving home on the hwy, drivingbetween 35-60 mph because of icy, snowy, slushy, 35 mph windy conditions.my steering wheel started vibrating crazily and my truck kept wanting to pull itselfto the left.i felt bumping every time the front left wheel made a revolution.with 1 1/2 hours of driving time left i kept hoping i would make it home safely, which i did.i took my truck in the next day only for them to tell me all four tires of mine were shot - cords in two tires snapped, and bubbling and thread/treadwear in the other two. Granted, i had the tires for 7 years.however, they were 70,000 miles tires that lasted 31,000 miles.premature treadwear was evident after driving the first 10,000 miles and became progressively worse.i maintained regular tire rotation schedule throughout.not one time did my mechanic mention any problems, even when asked.kumho 205/75 tires are crap, they are going to kill somebody and the company knows it.do minimal research and you'll discover this yourself. Tire places who don't know this haven't done enough research or don't care. Is that who you want to take your recommendations from?not one, not two, but all four tires of mine needed replacing at the same time.when i complained to the ones who highly recommended these tires, they blamed me - 7 years is too long, didn't rotate tires enough, didn't inspect them myself every time i hopped in my truck, my truck sat too long without be driven, alignments not done every year, nobody has ever complained about kumho tires (big fat lie!), they were not aware of any recalls (bigger, fattest lie), blah blah blah!sounds like a conspiracy to me.get kumho tires off the shelves before someone gets killed!

Decals on front bumper and drivers side door were pealing off.these were both replaced on service order dated 6-25-98.this however took 3 trips, 3 different days and about 2 weeks time to complete.decals are now beginning to peal off again.this time the passenger's side door is joining in on the pealing. I took the truck to the dealer where i purchased it from and they said, "stone chips on frt, pass. Door has ding from another vehicles door stone chips -damage not warrantable-striped are well adhered". I found this rather amusing because i can take a hose and spray them off.i assume they must have a high power microscope to see a ding in the door.i still can not find one in this area.i now have another gmc dealer working on replacing them for the second time.they have them on order.7-26-99

Started off with a sudden failure to accelerate on highway then corrected itself; on and off for a few weeks. Discovered that brake pedal was soft and was failing to return to starting position; replaced master cylinder to eliminate soft pedal but still sticking and not returning to starting position. Cannot find cause. *nlm

This truck is a safety hazard in the summer to drive. It will without warning in hot weather, failed to accellerate. As the pedal is pushed further to the floor the engine will lose rpm. It will run at an idle and die if accelerator is pushed all the way to the floor. It only does it in warm weather and if allowed to stabilize at an idle can sometimes be driven away. It has done this with passengers in the vehicle and is unsafe. Gm has refused to replace parts and i have been told by the vendor that provides the 1-800 line sevice that no parts will be replaced until it logs a code. It does not log a code so i am unable toprove this condition exists. I am not happy and gm is not inclined to take care of the problem. This truck is a lemon and needs to be taken care of. The dealer is ignorant and needs to be shut down. I am not impressed with the gm approach to repair. Ignore a pissed off customer and he will go away. When this truck kills someone it will be to late.

Interior components break easily: driver's recliner handle sheared off, driver's visor hinge snapped, windshield defrost grille fractured.

Dt: the electric wiring from the main trunk that comes from the firewall and the motor system. Branched off from the main branch to the windshield wipers, who only worked 67% of the time.

My wipers on my 1998 sonoma pick-up stopped on me in the middle of a rain storm while i was driving a 70mph. I luckily was able to get off the road without crashing.after waiting for thirty minuites i could get them to operate on low speed in order to get home. This is not the first problem i have experienced with these wipers.on other occassions i have turned them on to wipe intermittently and they go to constant wiping and i cannot get them to turn off. I heard of a recall, but have recieved no notice of this recall and when investigating it on the web, i have come across several postings where gmc does not want to take responsibility for sell faulty equipment. I am posting this in the hopes of getting the problem fixed before there is a serious crash and lawsuit.

The windshield wipers have only worked intermittently whenever they are run.in the heaviest rain you cannot count on them and sometimes they won't come on at all.this is very dangerous problem when they quit working in the middle of the road in the middle of a rain.they have not made it a whole trip in the rain and stayed working- always only intermittent.sometimes you just have to pull over until they decide to come on again.

Windshield wipers just stop working without warning.

Windshield wipers fail to operate on occasion during inclement weather. Recall issued for other gm vehicles citing problem circuit control boards to wiper motors. Very hazardous condition when driving in heavy rain conditions and wipers fail to operate.

Windshield wipers have been sporadic for last two months; was able to get them started by getting out of truck and moving the blades by hand; last week, in heavy down pour, the wipers would not work at all; stopped at an autobody shop, the guy smacked the motor with a wrench and got them working well enough for me to get home. They are still not working.

A few month after i bought my 1998 gmc sonoma the windshield wipers stopped working.sometime they come on and work for a few minutes and then stop but many times they never work.my dealer says the 97 sonomas were recalled for the same problem that continues on to the 98 model.this makes it extremely dangerous to drive in the rain.

Windshield wiper motor failure due to cracked solder joints.*mr

Consumer stateswindshield wipers work intermittently. Dealer notified.

Windshield wipers do not work correctly. If they work, they will stop mid-wipe blocking the drivers view. Half of the time, however, the wipers fail to even come on. This is a very wide-spread problem for many gm trucks and suvs built throughout the 1990's.

When driving the vehicle in the rainwindshield wipers failed, causing the driver to pull off the road. Consumer contacted the dealership, but problem persisted.

Certain gm trucks have been recalled but the others have not but the same component was used in other models and the same isue occurs.i had a 1997 isuzu hombre that had this problem and now i have a 1998 gmc sonoma nad the same problem occurs.the 1997chevy s-10s were recalled for this issue but the recall should be extended to other yeas as well.listed below is the issue with the 1997 s10s.the exact same problem occurs on 98 gmc sonomas as well.make:chevroletmodel:s10year:1997recall number:03v159000summary: on certain minivans, pickup trucks, and sport utility vehicles with certain model-engine combinations, the windshield wiper motor may fail due to cracked solder joints on the controller circuit board. The windshield wipers could work intermittently or not at all.consequence: if this were to occur during bad weather, driver visibility would be reduced, which could result in a crash.remedy: dealers will replace the wiper motor circuit board and cover. My 98 gmc sonoma's windshield wiper module failed causing poor visibility during rain. Initially, i was able to tap the module to regain wiper use, but the problem has become unmanageable. I have taken my vehicle to be repaired at neil twinter motors costing $95.81.

Windshield wiper system is faulty. Usually the wipers continue running after being turned off, sometimes they stop while running, frequently they run continuously when in the "interval" settings, a few times they have failed to operate at all.

On several occasions the windshield wipers stop working.was traveling through downtown dallas in heavy rain and traffic at a high rate of speed when the wipers stopped and i had to stop immediately on the interstate and wait for them to start working again.took to a repair shop in oklahoma and had the connections cleaned and eventually re-soldered.was told this is a common problem with this type of vehicle and will probably need to replace the wiper motor.has there been a recall on this model and year?*nlm

Intermittently the windshield wipers malfunctioned. Thewindshield wipers engaged by themselves to the fastest speed setting when in the slow speed setting. On 3 separate occasions the windshieldwipers quit working, but engaged again within seconds on two occasions. Then, failed to come back on the third occasion. This failure was due to a defect described in the windshield wiper recall 03v159000, but this vehicle was not included in the recall due to vin.

When driving in the rain the windshield wipers failed, causingconsumer to pull off the road. Consumer contacted the dealership, butproblem recurred.

Windshield wipers come on and off intermittently without warning .

Windshield wipers fail when it rains.

1998 gmc sonoma 2wd has identical windshield wiper motor malfunction to already recalled 1997 sonomas. Cracked solder joints in the wiper motor circuit board causes wiper failure. The 1998 sonoma's need to be included in the gm recall.

Had a problem with windshield wipers not working or working intermittently.i found problem to be the electrical plug on wiper motor circuit board to have fractured soldier connections.resoldier connections cure problem.

My windshield wipers on my truck will work for a while and then lock up, today i was driving on the interstate and it was raining and the wipers were workingfine and then it began pouring suddenly the wipers stopped about halfway almost causing me to lose control.

At first instance of failurewindshield wipers would intermitently stop working.it has now progressed to total failure.got under hood and traced to wiring plug in at wiper motor.if plug is jiggled the wipers will work for a short period of time.vehicle cannot be driven during possible rain conditions due to safety issues.we are in the process of getting an estimate for repairs from a dealer.

Wipers broken - work occassionally when wiring harness "jiggled" - then stop again.

Windshield wipers run for a while (5 to 15 min) then just stop. After a variable period of time (1min-10 min) they will come back on only to quit again after a short period of time. Last night it was raining hard and the failure caused a serious loss of visibilty, luckly no accident ensued.this was not the first time this failure occurred and i saw two other similar complaints on your web site.

This started as an occasional failure in 2002 when the intermittent wipers would suddenly start wiping at full speed "on their own" and would only go back to intermittent speed after i would turn off the wipers and re-turn them on. In august 2005 this changed to where the intermittent wipers would go to full speed and then just stop. They would not resume wiping when i would turn the switch on and off several times (thus i was driving in the rain with no wipers).however - they would just as suddenly begin wiping.in october 2005 i had the local gm dealer replace the wiper module circuit board which it turned out was cracked.this is the same piece of equipment that gmc did a recall forvehicles between 1994 and 1997. I have registered this issue with the gm claims department - but they will not take any action for a recall nor reimburse the cost of the part.

Windshield wipers fail to come on after been turned. Will restart only after tutrning vehicle completing off. Has happen several times. Unable to duplicate for dealer. He cant fix it if he cant duplicate.dt
