The engine shuts off after it warms up. This can happen at any time and any speed. After waiting approx. 2 minutes it will start again and run fine for the rest of the day. No check engine lights or diagnostic codes are available. There is a recall for the 2001 models (campaign id # 07v521000). This problem also extends into newer model years. Mine was manufactured in 1/02

Consumer complains of premature stalling at idle.the vehicle lacks sufficient power, it surges and at times refuses to accelerate.the transmission doesn't shift down properly out of 4th gear and the air conditioning unit does not cool properly and makes whistling noises.*jg

Our 2002 sierra 3500 gmc pickup truck is equipped with an 8.1l v8 engine and the crankshaft position sensor causes the truck's engine to operate intermittently which in turn causes the engine to fail completely.when the engine operates intermittently, the message light illuminates 'reduced engine power' and the vehicle runs rough and ultimately stalls.the engine may re-start immediately or after a period of time.because this sensor has failed on the expressway at a high rate of speed (70 mph) on several occasions, we were very fortunate that we (or someone else) were not seriously injured.because nhtsa recalled the 2001 gmc suvs/trucks that had this defective crankshaft position sensor and because there are numerous other 2002 suvs/trucks that are also having their engines fail due to this same defect, the nhtsa should immediately investigate having gmc recall the 2002 models as well.there are several complaints listed on nhtsa's website that deal with this same issue (e.g., complaint numbers 10038110, 10009727, 1009569, 10009556, 10001480, 10054217, 10069780, etc.) that are identified under various 2002 gmc models (i.e., sierra, gmc truck, c series).additionally, since consumers frequently purchase gmc trucks with the 8.1l v8 engine to tow large trailers, this situation can create a serious hazard on the highways that nhtsa must address expeditiously.thus, since we are a consumer that purchased our truck to tow a large trailer and our truck has stalled on the highway on numerous occasions, we had no choice but to replace the crankshaft position sensor out-of-pocket.

Dt vehicle stalls and does not restart, it could be sitting an hour or day and it will not restart. Dealer has had the vehicle, and they could not pin point the problem. Every 2000 miles the vehicle burned a quart of oil, the dealer stated it was normal.

Gmc serria 2002.our truck has rust on the bumper behind the painted cover.the dealer suggested this is normal and polished it, within one week the bumper showed rust again.the driver's side door is not lined up correctly, the dealer tried to adjust it, the result is the door must be slammed to close it.the motor makes knocking sounds at the start as if it has no oil.the oil has been changed every three thousand miles. We have had the truck this since it was new and have had the dealer do all the regular maintenance including tire rotations and oil changes.

On cold starts the engine produces loud rapping sound as if running on no oil. Gmc has been notified, but it is deemed a normal operating sound, and will not shorten the engine life.they never made any attempt to fix problem, just offered an extended warranty on certain parts.it really makes me wonder how they know what parts to cover on the extended warranty if there is nothing wrong with the engine?dt

Vehicle stalls on take off, dealer cannot remedy problem. Consumer states the problem of the vehicle stalling was solved by using high octane gasoline. The clutch does not engage properly, also sometimes sounds so loose.

The oil light illuminated after 2500 miles. The consumer found out that the vehicle had consumed over 2 quarts of oil and emitted blue smoke when started cold. The dealer replaced the pcv valve as a cause but the vehicle continued smoking and consuming more oil, the dealer informed the consumer that eventually they would have a redesigned valve cover to prevent the problem, but that they could do no more at this time.

The vehicles muffler was covered with metal that impacted the drive shaft and caused it to wear when the vehicle went over bumps.*nlm *nlm

Dear sir or ma'am, i have a 2002 gmc sierra truck that i bought new in 2002. The brakes recently failed completely while my wife was driving on or about september 26, 2014. The brake pedal went to the floor without significant braking action.fortunately she was able to stop safely and was not involved in an accident. Upon examination, the brake line to the left rear wheel was completely rusted through. I examined the rest of the lines and noticed that the brake lines, the transmission cooler line and the fuel line all show signs of major corrosion, especially along the frame. I have less than 43,000 miles on this truck and it was garage-kept the first nine years i owned it. I live in ky where the roads are only salted a few times a year. The rest of the vehicle is relatively rust free. The truck is unsafe to drive now. Even if i patch the leak, the rest of the lines could fail at any time. I could suffer catastrophic brake failure while towing my boat or horse trailer or simply going down a hill. Furthermore, the fuel lines are under considerable pressure and if they rupture, there could be a very dangerous fire hazard. If the transmission cooler lines rupture, i could have a complete transmission failure.i have read that this is a known issue with chevrolet and gmc trucks for years 1999 to 2003 and that the nthsa has looked into this in the past.if other trucks are in the same condition as mine (and i believe there are), there is a major safety problem on the roads right now. Yet, to date no recall has been issued. I think this is courting disaster. It is my opinion that lines made with inferior steel were used in the construction of this vehicle, yet gm refuses to acknowledge the fact. I urge you to look further into this matter.this is nthsa case number:[xxx]information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

My 2002 gmc sierra 1500 ext cab pickup failed safety inspection due to the parking brake not holding. It has 66000 miles on it. I rarely use the brake living on flat land. This is a common problem according to the inspector requiring appx. $180 to repair. Gmc has a service advisory to replace a part thatshould solve the problem but why does the consumer have to pay for a failed safety item?

When the vehicle was parked on a hill, the emergency brake didn't hold the vehicle.the dealer was notified.the dealer informed the consumer, per gm, that the trucks with disc brakes needed the parking brakes adjusted at 15k miles at the consumers expense. The vehicle was still under warranty.*scc *nlm

Dt: the contact states there isnhtsa recall campaign 05v161000 concerning the parking brake. This vehicle has the sameproblems as indicated in the recall, but itis not included in the recall due to vin. Updated 1/11/2006 - the vehicle's parking brake failed at approximately 30000 miles.

Recently took my truck in for routine tire rotation and alignment and i was told that my parking brake was wore out. I only have 55,000 miles on my truck and i have never used the parking brake.i was told that it was common wear by the dealer and gmc customer service will not do anything either.if it has to work to pass inspectionthen it should be a saftey issue. I was also told by the service tech that it is very common for theses trucks and he thinks the cable is too short and the brake wears going down the road.

Parking brake doesn't hold vehicle. Adjuster is maxed out and gm customer service states there is nothing they can do since it's out of warranty. Truck only has 61,000 miles. The parking brake has never been used. I'm the original owner.

The contact owns a 2002 gmc sierra. The contact stated that while parked on an incline the contact activated the parking brake and noticed it would not engage. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. There was a recall under nhtsa campaign id number: 05v161000 (parking brake) that may be related to the failure. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated the vin was not included in the recall. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 40,000. Updated 12/14/12*lj

Dt*:the contact stated the parking brake will not hold properly.the failure gradually became more severe, now the parking brake only holds on small inclines.upon inspection at an inspection station it was determined that the problem was caused by a defective clip in the parking brake.the dealer found a service bulletin # 02-05-26-001 for the parking brake.although the dealer was able to determine the cause of the problem the contact elected not to have the repairs completed.updated 3/3/2006 -

Ineffective parking brake, premature-unwarranted parking brake friction liner wear. Similar gm recall 05042 and nhtsa action number pe03057 but only applies to vehicles with manual transmissions. This problem also applies to my vehicle with an automatic transmission.

The parking brake liners have become worn to such a point that the parking brake will not hold the vehicle stationary. I have had to replace the liners twice to receive a state inspection. Each liner replacement has cost me $40/wheel for a total of $160. I never use my parking brake, yet it continues to wear. I feel that this is a design defect and should be repaired by the manufacturer.

2002 gmc extended cab failed state inspection today due to ineffective parking brakes. They have been ineffective for years. Today, i took the brakes apart and the left rear shoe was worn out. The shoe was not held in place very well. Same problem on right rear, but brake lining materialws still present. This seemed like a badly designed system. I am original owner, have 56,000 miles on truck, never been abused. Am taking to dealer tomorrow and fear huge bill.

I brought my truck to my dealer because the parking brake would not hold.i had 30,000 miles on the truck and had owned it for 25 months.the dealer gave me a receipt showing they had adjusted the brake and replaced the calipers & rotors.12 months later i tested the parking brake and it would not hold.i called the dealer and was informed that they made a mistake on my receipt - they never replaced any parts, they only cleaned the parking brake.i found out there was a technical service bulletin in place (02-05-26-001) when i originally brought the truck in under warranty but the dealership did not repair my truck according to the tsb.there is also an open nhtsa investigation (ea04011) on this matter.i think the dealer should fix the problem at their cost.

Emergency brake failure / left rear rotor damage.

2002 gmc extended cab failed state inspection today due to ineffective parking brakes. They have been ineffective for years. The consumer took the brakes apart and the left rear shoe was worn out**ccthe consumer stated the shoe was not held in place very well. The same problem occurred with the right rear but the brake lining material was still present.the consumer states that the parking brake wears prematurely on the automatic transmission just as well as the manual transmission. The consumer also states that in north carlolina parking brake effectiveness is a part of annual safety inspection. The consumer stated he will take the vehicle in to get a quote to apply the appropriate recall procedure. Update 05/09/07

I am concerned about my parking brake wearing out prematurely again and possibly rolling and colliding with another object.the parking brake shoes were replaced with only 38,000 miles on the vehicle.the dealer said they were wore down to metal and that it was my fault for not having the brakes totally disassembled and then adjusted.

Hand brake failure! hand brake was noticed to not be functioning at 30k warranty service. Service department replaced brake shoes. Brake only functioned for 3 months and began to fail again. I then replaced the brake shoes again myself so that i could pass inspection and have again been worn out in just a few months. I was then made aware of tsb #02-05-26-002 which eventually became tsb# 02-05-002a. It seems that gm is aware that there is a problem with their retainer clip design and have developed a replacement, but i believe that the cost should be theirs and not the consumers. I have placed notes in forums so that others do the same.

The contact stated that the vehicle was taken to a private mechanic for service and the mechanic stated that there was rust found in the drivers side brake baking plate and brake line. The private mechanic also stated that there may be safety related failures involving the suspension and brake pedal because the pedal had to be depressed all the way to the floor before the brakes functioned properly. The accident happened in a parking lot. As i was turning at the end of row of parked vehicles ,a pick-up truck was backing out of a parking place. I applied the brakes but there was no response only a ratcheting noise coming from the front end of my pick-up. I put the truck in neutral but it continued to go forward until my truck ran into the other one. This happened at a very low speed but there was still quite a bit of damage to the trucks. It almost felt like the truck was being pulled forward on its own. I got my truck in to a mechanic and he replaced the left front wheel speed sensor. This accident was small but i could just as easily run into someone in a wheelchair or someone that could not get out of the way. I found out later that the truck was recalled before i owned it (at 43000 miles) for the same problem. The truck now has 103000 miles on it and it appears that the original problem has not been solved.

I stepped on the brake pedal to shift the truck from out of park and the pedal went to the floor. I got out of the truck and found a puddle of fluid in the area in front of the drivers side rear tire. It appeared as though the brake line going to the back brakes ruptured in the area behind the gas tank.

While driving my 2002 gmc sierra i depressed the brake peddle to stop at a red light. The brake peddle went all the way to the floor and the truck continued forward. I swerved off the road to miss hitting the car in front of me. After inspecting under the truck i noticed one of my brake lines had rusted completely threw and the rest didn't look much better.

I was slowing to a stop light from residential street, into a main road, and brake pedal went to the floor.i pumped brakes and recovered pressure and stopped. I then proceeded on the main road to next light. After being at the light with my foot on the pedal for approx. 15 sec. The pedal went to the floor and truck began rolling forward. I let pedal go and pumped and pressure came back and held for about 15 more sec. Then failed again with truck rolling forward.i then drove the truck directly to the shop about 4 miles away.i was informed that a very alarming and common occurrence with 99-06 gm trucks occurred.my brake lines had rusted out completely.650.00 bucks later i'm back on the road.i was told to look at this site and i was amazed at how many other vehicles have reported this problem.i was wondering if gm would be so kind as to at least pick up the cost of the parts which i was told around 100.00.wishful thinking i guess.

On the morning of friday august 21, 2015, my wife went to move my 2002 gmc sierra. She pulled out of our driveway and proceeded up-hill about 300-400 feet, and then turned around in a neighbor's driveway, when coming back down the hill she tried to brake to stop in front of our house, but the brakes totally failed without any warning. She then went up a slight hill on the other side of our house, but still couldn't stop, and didn't think to put the truck in park as she slowed. She rolled backwards down the hill and was able to steer into a neighbor's yard where the truck came to rest on a berm.at the time she said there were cars parked on both sides of the street and had a car been coming the opposite direction she would have crashed into it. Had there been pedestrians they could have been hit as well. When i came home that afternoon, i added brake fluid to the reservoir, and then pushed on the brake pedal. I saw a huge stream of fluid pour from below the driver's side door. I looked under the truck and found the brake lines surprisingly corroded. If sudden, immediate loss of brakes without any warning is not cause for a recall i do not know what is.

The contact owns a 2002 gmc sierra. While driving 45 mph, the brake pedal was depressed, but the vehicle failed to stop. The contact veered into a ditch to avoid a collision. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the brake lines were corroded and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 100,000.

6/5/12after only 54k miles on my 2002 gmc sierra 1500 2wd pickup, i experienced an instantaneous and complete brake system failure as a direct result of a corroded brake line(s), which burst, causing a complete loss of brake fluid and pressure.the failure occurred one brake application after exiting the off-ramp of a highway; i was very fortunate that the failure occurred at low speed (approx. 15mph) while entering a parking lot. There was no collateral damage or injuries involved. Further inspection by the gm dealer reveled that all of the associated brake lines were heavily corroded and prone to failure at some point in the near term. The gm dealer offered to repair the one brake line that had failed for $600.00 and indicated to me that replacing all necessary brake lines would be cost prohibitive. I elected not to have gm repair my vehicle; since the cost for replacing one brake line @ $600.00 is ridiculous!further, replacing the failed brake line only was not acceptable to me since the associated brake lines are close to failing as well. I took the vehicle to a local reputable auto repair facility, who offered a much more reasonable quotation and who performed a comprehensive inspection/repair of multiple suspect brake lines in order to make the vehicle truly safe. I am not happy with gm due to their non-responsiveness of this very serious mechanical problem and associated risk to public safety. I do not believe it is reasonable for brake lines to fail due to corrosion within the first ten years of operation; especially, for a vehicle with only 54k miles. This is truly a public safety issue that needs to be addressed, however, i have no confidence that gm will act without federal intervention. Disappointed in gm -

As many other gmc/chevrolet truck owners, i am experiencing premature brake line rust issues. Luckily i was not involved in an accident, but a rusted brake line failed coming to an intersection. When the brake pedal was pushed, i felt a slight resistance and the brake pedal went straight to the floor.

The contact owns a 2002 gmc sierra 1500. The contact stated that when he applied the brakes, the brake pedal went to the floor. The contact was able to avoid a crash and cruise to a stop. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who determined that all of the brake lines were corroded. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileage was 140,000.

Brake line burst when brakes were applied.according to multiple repair facilities all brake lines are extremely rusted and must be replaced.rear brake components also rusted and must be replaced.cost of repairs exceeds $3000.00.i've had several vehicles the same age ( with more miles ) that don't have nearly the same amount rust even though they too have spent their winters in michigan.stopping a vehicle has to be the most important aspect of a vehicle to get correct.how is it that manufactures are not required to use the best product available for brake lines?

The contact owns a 2002 gmc sierra 1500.the contact stated that while traveling 55 mph, the brake pedal sank abormally into the floorboard and failed to stop the vehicle. The brake light illuminated on the instrument panel.the vehicle was merged to the side of the road where the vehicle was turned off and restarted.the manufacturer was not notified. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic. The technician diagnosed that the brake lines needed to be replaced.the failure and current mileage was 127,000.

Xmas tree shopping w/family very long stopping distance, then no brakes. I made repair at holding bracket near left front wheel on frame. Then on 2/25/2014 another brake line rust failure near but in back of abs module to back wheels. I replaced that section . Today 3/15/2014 another failure at the first spot, holding bracket near left front wheel on frame. All this on 2002 gmc sierra, funny i have a 2002 ford taurus almost the same mileage no brake problems.

When is there going to be a recall on the rusted brake lines, i already crashed in 2006 with the abs system which failed and was a failure to start with and when they fixed, the fix only lasted for 14 months and since then i have be driving with conventional brakes,so are they waiting for me and others to crash again with these rusty brake lines. P.s. Going on 3rd. Set of rotors in the rear, only 65,000 mi.

Left house and abs brake light came on, shut the truck off and abs brake pump under truck would not stop running even with key off. So had to take fuse out. At that time i drove back home, but if you push down on brake it will go to the floor. June 2014 had truck in shop to have all brake lines replaced and fixed at auffenberg in carbondale illinois due to brakes all of a sudden going out and all lines rusted and now 2,500 miles later this happens also the emgerency brake is not working either. So was there more damage done from all this that should be on recall and us not paying the bill for these defects.

The brake lines in my 2002 gmc sierra truck have corroded to the point that fluid is being lost and braking is being negatively affected. This was found during a routine oil change, luckily there was not a incident on the road. My truck is well maintained, i understand there are thousands of other complaints.

This is an old incident; however, until just recently, i did not realize there was a website such as yours.also, i am reporting a specific incident, but also want to include other general information.the incident which occurred was related to my brake fluid lines rusting completely through while i was driving down the road with my two small grandchildren.when a vehicle stopped in front of me, i pushed on my brakes only to find icould not stop.fortunately, there was a field on the right side of the road and i drove into it, rather than hitting the vehicle.when my husband checked the brakes, the lines literally fell apart.we still have this truck, but the entire underside of it (frame, spring hangers, front drive shaft, etc) are all rusted.another issue that happened earlier this summer - the spare tire carrier had become so rusted, my spare tire actually came lose while driving down the road.fortunately it was held up by a chain. Upon learning that this is a problem with most all gm trucks, i felt obligated to base my complaint in the hopes that something can be done.toyota faced similar problems, but fortunately stood behind their products and made it right with their customers and i feel gm should be required to do likewise.we have tried to trade this truck in for another vehicle, but are being offered way below kelly blue book price because of the rust issue.

While traveling out of state, the brake pedal suddenly went completely to the floor.fortunately, the truck was stopped at the time.repairs estimated by sears indicated that all lines should be replaced as well as parking brake parts due to severe corrosion.had the ruptured line replaced along with caliper at the affected wheel.will have to have all remaining lines replaced to be sure the vehicle can be driven safely.the technicians who worked on the vehicle indicated it is extremely corroded compared to other vehicles of it's age and mileage.

I was driving and my brakes went to the floor. I got it to a repair shop and they said my rear and front drivers side brake lines had rusted out and had holes in them. I had them replaced. Then on february 2013 i had the same problem again. It turned out that now the driver side and the two lines to the master cylinder have rusted through. I have never had a brake line rust through. On this truck i have had to replace everything at the cost of over $500.00. This is not rite....

Driving 30 mph in traffic. Light turns red . Cars in front of me apply brakes .i applied my brakes. Brakes instantly felt spongy and abnormal. Applied more pressure with 2 feet and brake pedal went to the floor with no warning at all. No brake light on dash came on just went to floor. Was determined by my mechanic that the brake lines had rotted and i had a catastrophic brake failure loosing major brake fluid at the accident site.

Started vehicle and began driving on street.brake pedal went to the floor and brakes were not normal.stopped vehicle and saw large puddle of brake fluid under vehicle.had vehicle towed to repair shop and was told brake line rusted and all brake lines were corroded and that gm has had problems with this in many vehicles. Fortunate that failure had not occurred at highway speeds. Repair estimate was $3200 for replacement of brake lines and associated parts.

I have a 2002 gmc sierra and just pulled out of my driveway going down the street to stop sign and brake peddle went all the way to the floor causing me to go thru stop sign. Lucky no one was going the other way!managed to make it back home and noticed driveway all wet .looked under truck and noticed the break lines all rotted! i cant believe that general motors would make steel brake lines knowing that steel will rot !did they just figure that out? i thought they should know better!!!! why don't i here about other vehiclemakes don't have this problem. Did they just learn about steel? this is and important safety item and breaks need to work all the time. I also noticed the my fuel lines are showing the same signs. Gm should repair and learn from this bad choice to install inferior equipment for such an important system in any vehicle. I have since repaired my break lines at a very expensive $1,500 !

I was lucky and not moving when this occurred for the second time. Once again i was getting ready to leave in my truck when i stepped on the brake pedal to shift out of park and the brake pedal went to the floor. Should i take my chances on this happening a third time? perhaps i won't be so lucky and there may be an accident involved along with possible injury or death. I did find a recall for tailgate straps for this truck but not for corroded brake lines that are bursting? i find that to be unacceptable. What are the chances of someone dying from corroded tailgate straps? this is an incredible safety issue affecting millions of trucks and there needs to be a recall issued to have these brake lines replaced with stainless steel so as not to have this problem repeated in the future.

Made a left hand turn at a traffic light after it turned green. I was the only vehicle at the time making the turn, nobody in front or behind me. Drove about 1/10th a mile to the next light, when it turned yellow, i immediately hit the brakes to stop. At first the brakes worked then my foot went to the floor, i had no brakes. I came to a stop in the middle of the intersection. I then backed up, to get behind the light. As i stated at the beginning, there was nobody in front or behind me at the other light making the turn with me, so when i was approaching the next light, i had nobody in front of me, behind me or to my right. The roadway was four lanes, two in each direction, with a center medium. I was driving in the left lane. So i am looking to drive another day and someone else too. The cause of the problem is that the brake line that goes from the front to the rear, running along side the frame, on the driver side, rusted out and broke. I contacted gm about this, and after talking and complaining about what happened, they said there was nothing they could do for me. My problem is that, this is a safety issue, and they take no responsibility for it. I should have been at least notified in some way as an owner that my life may be in danger if i do not have my brake lines checked and replaced if needed. They no about the problem and are not contacting owners of my vehicle and others with the same problem. I am looking to have not been hurt or killed or hurting and killing someone else. I did not know of the problem until after it happened. I am now faced with doing the work myself, which is a major undertaking, or having the local gmc dealership doing it for 1500+, which is where it is right now, waiting for my call. Thank you.

Applied brakes at 35mph and pedal went to floor, causing vehicle to rear end another vehicle stopped at traffic light. Drivers side rear break line had ruptured due to rust. No warning light or backup system activated. Further inspection shows all break lines are severely rusted and require replacement. On line search indicates this is a common safety problem with this vehicle. It is miraculous that there are not deaths associated with this manufacturers defect.

Applied brakes to stop and brake peddle went to floor do to rotted brake line.

The rear brake line failed when trying to stop for a red light.the brake pedal went to the floor and i was not able to stop the truck before entering the intersection.fortunately, there was no traffic crossing the intersection at the time.i got the truck home, and a puddle of brake fluid formed in the rear of the truck.upon inspection, all of the brake lines are badly corroded.

The contact owns a 2002 gmc sierra. The contact stated that while driving 35 mph, he applied the brakes and the pedal depressed to the floor. The contact maneuvered to the shoulder and then applied the emergency brake to stop the vehicle. Upon exiting the vehicle, the contact noticed that brake fluid was leaking from the brake lines. The vehicle was taken to an independent repair shop and the contact was informed that the brake lines were fractured. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer offered no assistance. The failure mileage was 40,000.

Description: 2002 gmc sierra?82,xxx.00 miles.while dropping my daughter off at school, i stopped at a light, accelerated to make it up the hill, and as i came over the horizon i proceeded to stop, when i depressed my brake pedal to slow down, the pedal went right to the floor. I almost ran into another vehicle and had i not thrown the car into low gear, and depressed my emergency brake, i am certain that we would have smashed into the school bus in front of us. My wife called aaa, and had the car towed to the local gmc dealer. It seems that the entire brake line system is rusted out, and that this was the first line to blow. They had the audacity to tell my wife that the repairs would start at $3,300.00 and would not guaranty that it could not be more expensive than that!. We take good care of the truck, last year we had all the brakes done, new tires, and recently had a new head gasket installed, and the oil changed, so it is obvious that the dealer does not ever do a thorough vehicle inspection. We cannot afford the shell out the money for these repairs, and i am hopeful that there has been some kind of a recall for this, since i see so many complaints about the same subject? please help!

Brakes failed in drive way due to corroded line on top of frame rail under drivers seat.

I was driving approx 35 mph when a dog ran in front of my vehicle. I applied the brakes to avoid hitting the dog. A moment later i went to apply brakes to slow down for an unfamiliar turn and my pedal went to the floor. I managed to downshift to come to a stop and upon inspection, noticed a hole in my drivers side rear brake line. All of the brake lines have a severe amount of rust. The bundle of lines running along the frame on the driver's side are the worst.

Brake abs system is activating at low speeds. Often when i come to a stop from 5-20mph the abs system activates for no reason on dry, clean roads. Several times i've narrowly exscaped an accident. The truck doesn't want to stop at all when the abs activates.

Anti lock brakes kick in and vehicle doesn't stop!

Possible brake speed sensor failure 2002 gmc siera denali pickup

When you are going 3 to 6 miles per hour going slow or coming to a stop the abs system fails causing the brakes not to work, you have to push really hard on the pedal just to get it to slow down. I,ve talked to other people who have gmc and chevy pick-ups and they have had the same problem.this is something the should be repaired by gm before someone is killed.i also found out today that canada has issussed a recall for this problem. Does it take someone to get killed or injured be the nhtsa does something?

The brakes on my 2002 gmc sierra are not working right. When i approach a stop the brake pedal goes all the way down and then the abs engages.

Rusted anti lock brakes are wearing out hubcaps and brake assembly. Consumer will need to take vehicle to dealership to be replaced. *sbthe front brakes wore out and damage on rotor.the front brake pads and right rotor were replaced.the rear brakes wore out.the rear pads were replaced and the rotors were resurfaced.

The contact owns a 2002 gmc sierra. In addition, the contact also stated that the safety belts failed to open and close properly. The vehicle was not taken to an authorized dealer and the manufacturer was not notified. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileages were 101,950. The consumer stated to pleases disregard notice. He called the safety line to report a complaint against a vehicle inspection station, not knowing the hotline was to report safety defects. Updated 10/07/11

2002 gmc sierra. Just as the vehicle is about to stop the anti-lock brakes seem to release and the vehicle travels around 10 to 15 feet without being able to stop. Very disconcerning.

The brakes locked up when pulling into parking lot of store.

The rear brakes had to be replaced every seven months.

While driving at any speed and when brakes were hot there was a problem with stopping.this condition occurredsix times.dealer claimed that this was normal for this vehicle.

Stepped on the brake to put the truck in gear when it was noticed that the brake pedal went all the way to the floor!backed up, pulled forward, there were no brakes!vehicle was carefully driven home using back roads and transmission braking along with limited pedal braking. Brake light came on just before arriving athome, 10 miles down the road.the truck is presently in an independent repair facility. All metal brake lines are to be replaced at significant cost to me.upon inspection it is apparent that the brake lines are more of substandard material. All metal lines show excessive corrosion and deterioration for a vehicle of this age and mileage.the truck is my wife's and was rarely driven during winter months.

The contact owns a 2002 gmc sierra 2500hd. The contact stated that the front brake lines failed and the rear lines were very close to failing. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer for service and was informed of the failures. The failure and current mileages were 108,000. The vin was not available.

Hydraulic brake line corrosion: the brake lines became so corroded that i was losing approximately 16 oz.of fluid every 1000 miles.the corrosion was so bad that the bleeders on the front calipers had rusted off and had to be replaced as well as all of the brake lines.this resulted in a repair bill of $701.31.only time will tell when the remaining lines and calipers will need replacing.only a few weeks ago the service mgr. At this location told me i probably had the best looking 2002 gmc pick-up in the u.s. So neglect is not at fault here.

Brake lines are rusted out badly and one rear left line rotted through and began to leak. When the brake lines were inspected all the brake lines were found to be severely rusted.

When the consumer backed out of a parking space, the brake pedal traveled to thefloor.

While driving in the city while it was rainingat 10 mph, the vehicle in front of the consumer stopped and the consumers brakes failed and hit the vehicle in front.(4/24/05) while in the rain the consumer had come off of the interstate going 20 mph and the brakes failed again.the vehicle was regularly serviced by the dealer.the vehicle was taken to the dealer on 4/28/05.the dealer reported that the vehicle needed front and rear pads, the front rotors need machining, the rear rotors needed replacing , and four wheel calipers needed to be serviced.the dealer stated that the pads were 70% worn. The consumer stated that the rear brakes have pad squeakers but they could not be heard.the consumer had taken the rear wheel off and saw the rear pad was completely metal to, and rear.the consumer made the repairs as well serviced the calipers. *sc

Brake lines from master cylinder to abs unitfailed due torust on my 2002 gmc sierra pickup truck with less than 35,000 miles on it. Have not driven nor can i safely drive truck since the incident happened. Haven not repaired as of yet as i am exploring my options.

The brakes squeaked when applied. The dealer replaced the rear brake shoes and clips.

The contact owns a 2002 gmc sierra. The contact stated that while driving approximately 5 mph and entering a car port at her residence when the brakes failed and she crashed into the front corner of her house. No one was injured. The contact stated that no warning lights illuminated on the instrumental panel prior or after the failure. The police were not called to the scene. The vehicle was not inspected by a dealer nor had it been repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 35,000. The vin was unavailable.

The metallic brakeline tubing ruptured causing brake failure while traveling 50 mph on a downgrade. The metal line above the rear axle, passenger side, corroded through and spewed brake fluid all over.the corrosion point is about 7-10 inches forward of the junction where the brake line transitions torubber hose that goes to the rear axle junction.there is also an unusual amount of corrosion on the gas fuel filter fittings located just forward of the gasoline tank.i was able to slow and stop by downshifting and using the emergency brake.brake lines should not corrode and fail in any climate on a 9 year old truck! they should not corrode period.

Brake line tubing.

Both the driver side and rear brake lines, because of rust, burst at the same time. It was lucky the car was not on the road.i have replaced all the lines and had to replace the front calipers because the bleeding nippled were completely gone due to rust. The rear calipers were in good shape.over the course of ownership, i have had to forcefully remove the tires from the hub because they were rusted to the hub. Again i was lucky that i did this work at home and would have been in serious trouble had i been forced to change tires due to a flat. It also appears the truck frame is showing advance rusting for its age and mileage.

Backing up to the garage put brake on didn't stop,i thought i would hit the garage put i did get stop in time. Steel line rusted, blown line on back brakes.

2002 sierra rearbrakesrusted. Front brake system had to have the rotors resurfaced due to rust and the speed sensors were corroded, calipers also rusted.

The contact owns a 2002 gmc sierra.the contact was driving 10 mph and applied the brakes but the vehicle began to lose braking power abnormally. The contact took the vehicle to a local mechanic to have the brake system bled and the pads replaced yet the repairs only resolved the failure temporary and the failure recurred.the contact referenced nhtsa campaign id number: 05v379000 (service brakes, hydraulic:antilock) but the contacts vin was not included due to the state in which he lived.the failure was not further repaired. The failure mileage was 49,986.updated 06/07/11*lj updated 2/03/2012 *ln

There was a loud noise when the brakes were applied.the vehicle was taken to the dealer and the dealer felt that the brakes had a manufacturers defect due to open drums. *nlm

Brake line burst open while applying brake to park vehicle on an incline.brake pedal went straight to the floor.line was leaking where lines run along the frame under the drivers side front door.after further inspection all brake lines are extremely corroded and near rusted through.

Brake failure. Sudden brake pedal to floor. Brake fluid on ground in area under driver. Towed to dealer. Dealer replaced rusted out front brake lines from ebcm to both front wheels.

My antilocking brakes have been activating during slow turning stops and i am not able to stop.i ran over a curve pulling into a packing lot.i almost hit another car pulling into the gas station.i called the gm dealer who said it was not covered under warranty and this has not been under a recall.so i disconnected the antilocking brakes and now the problem is gone.and good thing i did because that same day i was pulling into traffic and did not see an oncoming car because it did not have it's light on (dusk) and i had to stop fast while turning.if i did not disconnect the antilock i would have coasted it to the on coming car.gm needs to correct this problem.

Low speed application of brakes on mixed traction surface ( bare road on left side ice and snow on right side). Lead to unwanted activation of anti-locks. Resulting in loss of control of truck and subsequent crash with personal injury and substantial property damage. Police were notified but no report because it was in a subdivision.

Dt*:the contact stated the abs engages at speeds of 10mph and below.the stopping distance was increased as a result.there is a nhtsa recall, # 05v379000, regarding the abs system.the vehicle has the same problems as indicated in the recall; however it is not included in the recall due to the vin.the vehicle was not taken to a local dealership for repairs.

Consumer complaint regarding 2002 sierra brake rotors were bad and needed to be replaced, this almost caused consumer to go over a hill.the consumer received recall 05v379000 after the repairs were made.the dealer had to replace the hub and speed sensor.the consumer requested reimbursement but the claim was denied.

Unwanted abs activation.

Dt*:the contact stated the antilock brakes engage at low speeds.there is a nhtsa recall, # 05v379000, regarding the antilock brakes.the vehicle has the same problems as indicated in the recall; however it is not included in the recall due to the vin.

The vehicle was experiencing intermittent brake failure.the vehicle was takento the dealer at least 6 times, however, the dealer was not able to duplicate or solve the problem.the brakes would momentarily pause in stopping action, along with intermittent grabbing, then repeat itself.brake pulsation was also present. *sc

Anti lock brakes activated by themselves at low speeds.when depressing the brakes theypulsated and chattered. At low speed consumer's vehicle collided with the back door of the garage due to brake failure.no injuries were reported.sensors were replaced by dealership.*la

Consumer complained about a brake problem. The brake pedal goes to the floor, and it feels mushy. It takes an additional 50 feet to stop. Owner is afraid he won't stop in time.the consumer stated that the brakes have never been good.vehicle has been in the shop 4 times for brakes.*tc

2002 gmc sierra 1500 low speed abs failure.currently under recall # 05v37900 and gm recall 05-068.after recall was performed the abs is still failing and this vehicle will not stop when under 5 mph.the true failure mode is not the abs sensor corroding, it is the wheel bearing having extreme wear and it renders the hall effect signal that the sensor reads bad.details:at 50k miles i had the same low speed abs failure.the truck was out of warranty at this time and i had to purchase genuine gm replacement parts and replace both front wheel bearing and sensors on my own dime.this fixed the first abs failure.then the recall came out for just the wheel sensor, not the bearing.now 12k miles later (truck has 66k miles) the driver side wheel bearing is now so sloppy that the abs sensor will not read the hall effect.this causes the low speed abs failure mode again.i have pulled the abs fuse under the hood so that the low speed failures stop, but now the truck has non functioning abs.lastly, after 12k miles on the replacement gm bearings there is so much slop in the bearing that the dealer has suggested that i should not drive this vehicle due to safety reasons.the driver side wheel is close to falling off the vehicle.i contacted gm customer service at 1-800 gmc truck by the recommendation of my dealer and gm customer service is has yet to contact the dealer for resolution in this matter.my only choice it to replace the wheel bearing at my own cost and i have already done that once 12k miles ago only to have the failure occur again.i will have to continue replacing the wheel bearings for the remainder of this vehicles service life to maintain a vehicle that can safely transport my family.i have no confidence is this vehicle remaining safe for any extended period of time.what can nhsta do about this problem?

Dt*:the contact stated while driving less than 10 mph and applying the brakes the abs pulsates.the vehicle veers to the left and the stopping distance is increased.upon inspection the dealership determined there is corrosion on the left abs sensor.there is a nhtsa recall, # 05v379000, regarding the abs.the vehicle has the same problems as indicated in the recall; however it is not included in the recall due to the vin.the vehicle is a 2002 gmc sierra k3500.updated 04/17/06.

Dt*:the contact stated while entering a driveway at 3 mph, the brakes did not stop the vehicle from hitting a light pole.this incident occurred after repairs indicated in recall # 05v379000 regarding service brakes, hydraulic:antilock were performed at the dealership.the absence of braking action at low speed happened due to malfunctioning of the speed sensors.the manufacturer was contacted and the outcome was a referral to customer service where a representative was supposed to be called back in 48 hours however no return call was received.the contact expressed dissatisfaction with the recall performed in the vehicle because the dealership indicated in the job order inspection or replacement of the affected sensors but no replacement were performed.

Dt: the contact stateshad recall work completed, andthe dealer discovered the rotors wereseverely corroded, and the brake pads needed to be replaced. The recall work was completed under nhtsa recall campaign05v379000, concerning the anti-lock brakes. The service dealer suggested the metal contained in the rotors was defective. While the dealer acknowledged the fact that rotors should have a life span of more than 14,000 miles they refused to offer a free replacement. Therefore, the rotors and brake pads have not been replaced. The contact felt the recall should be expanded to include replacement of the corroded rotors. Updated 09/05/07

Dt: shortly after the purchase of the truck while traveling over a bump the abskicked in and there was a slow pulsation of brakes. Vehicle went through a stop sign. Thisoccurred on dry pavement. While traveling over inch bump or larger.the owner experienced the same thing as listed above.vehicle was seen by the service dealer, and they found no codes on the computer, they were unable to duplicate the problem. The owner was advised that brakes were operating properly. Owner found that pressing the brake pedal very fast and hard or pressing and then releasing it was the only way to gain affective braking. The owner unplugged the abs fuse, and was able to have the brakes operate normally.

My 2002 gmc sierra 4wd p/u with 28,570 miles had "abs brake" failure. I came close to going through my garage door because of this and am glad it didn't happen at a busy intersection!! there is a recall on my vehicle for this problem, however it only applies to the "salt belt" states and wisconsin is not included!! unbelievable!! the dealership (von holzen) in ashland wi. Replaced abs sensors p/n 15112379 ($225) also they had to replace both front brake rotors which could not be refaced as they would have been below specs. The whole bill came to $513.61!! i can't believe gmc doesn't have a recall for all states on the abs problem before there are abs caused fatalities!! von holzen dealership phone # 8003415440 has the old part.

Low speed anti-lock activation.

Dt: the contact states there isnhtsa recall campaign 05v379000 concerning the anti- lock brakes.this vehicle hasthe sameproblems as indicated in the recall, butit is not included in the recall due to vin.the vehicle has not been repaired.the failure of the wheel speed sensor occurred at a low speed. Updated 12/27/05.

Dt:2002 gmc sierra.the consumer states the abs brakes started pulsating, and consumer's vehiclehit another vehicle.this caused the brakes to go out.the vehicle was taken to the dealership, they told him the abs sensors failed.they were cleaned and now they seem to be okay.this problem has not happened since.there was no warning light on when this happened.

Dt: the contact states the abs system is bad. It almost caused an accident on 8-20-05 becausebrakes went to the floor. There wasno braking power. Had to shift the car into park to get the vehicle to stop.the contact was going very slowly when this happened.this was the first incident of this kind. The dealer repaired the vehicle. They replaced the wheel bearings, the hub, the rotors, and a cable that was attached to the wheel bearing on 8-22-05. It seems to be fixed as of now.

Abs system isnot working properly, there is a grinding noise when applying brakes. Contacted dealer, and the dealer is not willing to do anything.

My truck is a 2002 gmc sierra, and is having the same problems as the antilock braking system recall. I was told that since i don't live in the eastern states that i don't fall into the recall. It is having purging problems on the antilock, and is having problems with stopping at different speeds, the brakes don't seem to want to stop it.

Have 2002 gmc sierra and the anti lock brakes are freezing or working at a slow speed or a stop. Have called garages and they don't have the recall numbers. So i have to wait until released. How long must i wait!!!

Dt: the contact states there is a nhtsa recall, campaign05v379000 regarding the anti lock brakes. The vehicle has the same problems as indicated in the recall; however, it is not included in the recall due to the vin. No repairs weremade.

While pullingvehicle into the garage the steering and brakes failed . As a result, vehicle collided into the side of the garage.

The contact owns a 2002 gmc sierra.while applying the brakes at 10 mph, the brake pedal extended all the way to the floor.the road conditions were dry.the vehicle was serviced for nhtsa recall number 05v379000 (service brakes, hydraulic:antilock) at 33,725miles.the vehicle has not been inspected by a dealer.the current mileage was 39,600 and failure mileage was 39,000.the consumer stated the front rotors were replaced by the dealer due to the fact the rotors were damaged while performing the recall. The consumer stated replaced the rear rotors and pads at 35,000 miles due to corrosion and the consumer had to pull the fuse to the anti-lock system to properly drive vehicle home. Updated 09/12/07

Dt:the consumer complained about the abs braking system at low speeds. The dealer toldhim that there was nothing else they could do for the vehicle because thewarranty expired.this was thesecond time that the hubs have been replaced at the consumersexpense. Heheard there will be a recall in november, but they wereonly going to clean the sensors and not replace the hubs. His vehicle was purchased in pennsylvania. In august of 2004 the first hub was replaced, and in november 2004 he replaced the second hub. On october 26, 2005 the vehicle was takento the dealership and both hubs need to be replaced again. Updated 11/29/05.

Gmc sierra 2002the vehicle's antilock braking system engaged while being driven on dry pavement.*scas a result i took the truck considerable time and distance to come to a complete stop. This braking problem had been occurring repeatedly over the past 6 months.

At slow speeds (below 10 mph) the anti lock brakes mess up and truck can not be stopped. Would happen once in a while, now it happens every time i try to stop. Almost ran into several people. I can not believe this problem has not been a recall considering that all the people i have talked to that have had the same problem and that i am sure there has had to been several accidents involving this. A dealer told me to pull the anti-lock fuse until i get it fixed which i have. Truck now stops but i no longer have anti-lock brakes.

When applying the brakes fromlow speed brake pedal pulsated, resulting inextended stopping distance .dealer stated the rotors were rusted and flaking.

Dt: 2002 sierra gmc had absbrake problems. The vehicle didnot coming to a stop while consumer was at the gas pump. When vehicle operated at a slow speed the abs kicked in, making stopping difficult. The problem was erratic.consumer tookvehicle to the dealer, and the dealer stated thatthere was a problem with abs system.consumer almost was involved in a crash yesterday because the vehicle would not stop. Consumer had not done anything to correct this, and had been in contact with gmc.they said not to fix it, that there might be a recall.

Abs system failed, sensor faulty causing abs to engage at 3-4 mph, preventing vehicle from coming to a stop easily. The consumer noticed that all four rotors were rusted to the point of necessary replacement.*tc

This complaint is to support investigation pe050201 - events leading to failure:my truck has been driven in ny state since it was purchased in late 2001. It has been properly maintained and serviced.2 - failure and its consequences:after 40,000 miles, every time i came to a stop the anti-lock brakes would kick in (under 10 mph in completely dry conditions).this made the vehicle extremely difficult if not impossible to stop.i almost became involved in an accident on 3 or 4 separate occasions until i pulled the fuse for the abs system.pulling the fuse disables the system so i'm now driving without anti-lock brakes.certainly better than the alternative.3 - corrective measures and availability of partsi brought the vehicle in for service to patrick gmc in rochester, ny.paid $85.73 to have it diagnosed.they indicated both front speed sensors were bad and both hub assemblies would need to be replaced at a cost of $432 per side plus tax.the sensor itself is not available - it must be purchased with an entire hub assembly.i did not have the work done and continue to drive the vehicle with the abs fuse pulled.the vehicle is unsafe to drive in any other condition (except if the hubs were replaced).the defective parts are still on my truck.

The anti lock brakes on a 2002 gmc sierra extended cab pickup turn on (when they normally should not - dry stopping conditions) at low speed stops <10 mph.when they came on they would make stopping the vehicle very difficult.the last time the truck could not be stopped at a stop sign and went into a busy intersection, luckily with out an accident.to prevent the problem over the last six months i have had the fuse for the anti lock brakes removed to disable the anti lock feature completley.

I have a 2002 gmc sierra with abs which falsely activates at slow speeds.many friends have had similar complaints, one of which connected me to you folks.the situation is as known in pe05020.the "fix" is temporary and typically lasts 9 - 12 months.

Consumer stated when driving slow the abs kicked in. It caused the consumer to have no brakes.the consumer could hear the abs kick in and no hadlights come on.the consumer took the vehicle to the shop. The dealer informed the consumer the sensor had failed and she should contact gm.

The brakes on my gmc sierra were recalled because they can fail between 3 and 10 miles an hour.i took the truck in to be fix, however, i am still having trouble with the brakes- (i believe it is with the front wheel speed sensor -this is how it was listed on the recall paper).they seem to fail more under damp/moist/slippery conditions.when i called the dealership to tell them that the truck was still having problems after they had worked on the brakes their response was "deal with it".i am sorry but i cannot just deal with brakes that you cannot trust.what kind of help can i get with this.they have worked on the brakes four times....and they are still not good. Yesterday they took it and drove it....it was a nice and not bad conditions and they brought it back and said there was not a problem.i am sorry but there is a problem!they are very temperamental brakes!

Dt: the consumer complained aboutthe abs system engaging at low speeds of5-10 mph, and whencoming to a stop , the braking would go away completely. The consumer had it temporally repaired. The consumer had not contacted the dealer where it was bought, butwas planning to do that. The manufacturer has not been contacted. The vehicle is a 2002, gmc sierra pickup. The consumer has not checked with gm about recall information.

Dealer claims they cannot duplicate problem. Brake pedal will travel excessively when applied suddenly; so far, occurrence has been at slower speeds and intermittently.

On 01 nov, i was pulling into a parking spot when my brakes totally failed causing me to crash into a parked car. I was entering the parking spot below 5 mph when the brakes failed. I dropped my truck off at a repair center on 03 nov and they informed me that both the left front hub bearing was shot and the anti-lock brakes sensor was shot. Both items were replaced.

While driving at 5 mphtheantilock brakes (abs) malfunctioned and vehicle failed to stop. Consumer called the dealer, and was informed there was flaw with the abs.

Vehicle exhibiting same systems as nhtsa campaign id number:05v379000.took vehicle to dealership to investigate, but was informed that because my vehicle was not on the list of states affected, there was nothing they could do.they could, however, charge me $120 for a diagnosis of the vehicle.i declined.there has been more than one occasion in which other vehicles have almost been hit from the rear as a result of vehicle not being able to stop.

1. Loss of brakes at low speeds, which caused me to back into a ditch while backing out of my driveway. It feels like the abs is kicking in, but you loose all control of the brakes.2.have had to replace the brakes -- pads and rotors twice at my own expense in 46,000 miles.

2002 gmc sierra anti lock brakes engaged when consumer attempted to stop. *mr on another occasion the anti lock brakes would not allow the vehicle to stop.the service department informed the consumer that the vehicles hub on the drivers side needed replaced.there was no light indication.rust would get under the sensors and lift them. *sc

Dt: contact stated there was recall 05v379000 concerningthe abs system.a local service dealer performed the recall repairs.after the repairs were done the contactapplied the brakes, but the vehicle would not stop.upon inspection, the dealer stated the front left hub needed to be replaced.the dealer replaced the hub, and this corrected the problem.he had to cover the cost of the repairs. Updated 11/29/05.

The consumer owns a 2002 gmc sierra in which the anti-lock brakes activate at low speeds increasing the stopping distance. *mr gm was awareof the problem in the northern states that the problem was caused by corrosion by winter road salt. *sc

While driving on dry surfacesabs system engaged, fresulting inextended stopping distance. The part was replaced twice. However, problem recurred. Second occurance resulted in collision 'garage door'; return true;" onmouseout="window.status=''; return true;">garage door</a>.abs senser replaced a second time. *tc

Anti lock brakes would activate for for no reason at all once and a while at slow speeds conditiongot worse until i could not stop for a stop sign and also hit a curb i had to remove the fuse to disable the anti lock brakes to avoid a bad crash.

Dt:the consumer's vehicle had brake problems.the vehicle was taken to the dealer on sept. 3, 2004.all 4 brakes and rotors were replaced.the rotors broke on removal due to all the corrosion.new rotors were install but they have corroded again.consumer heard clunking noise when turning steering wheel, dealership technician lubed the intermediate steering wheel and clunking was gone. After getting the rotors and brakes replaced about 2,026 miles later they have to be replaced again because of corroding.*sb

Steady braking performance degradation since new, in conjuction with premature rear brake failure @ 28000 mi (2.5 yrs old), while front brakes still had over 50% remaining pad life. Dealer stated that rear rotor rust caused rear pad failure. Inspection of rear pads indicate other problems-uneven front to rear wear on lr inner pad .018" -.044", while lr outer pad had no brake material left. Rr outer pad had slight grooving across top with thickness between .110-.118", rr inner pad had grooving top and bottom, with between .122-.151" thicknesspad material left.

Dt: consumer heard something pop ping and fell into the street.consumer had no brakes in the rear. In the front the brake disc wasbadly pitted because of the poor quality of alloy. Consumer was driving up to a stop, trying stop, when the brakes failed.consumer sailed on through the stop sign. The front brakes were grinding due to the metal on the disc. The consumer had to replace with a whole new braking system with aftermarket products. Consumer did not feel safe with the gm brakes. Thishappened all of a sudden, there were no prior problems. This vehicle only has 8,000 miles on it. This happened while slowing down between 10 and 15 mph.

While having the tires rotated a technician noticed a groove cut from a rock between the brake caliper and the rim.

2002 gmc sierra developed serious brake problems.*mrwhile driving 70 mph the right front brake caliper froze.this resulted in extreme heat and casued the hub and bearing assembly to come apart.

Premature brake wear required brakes and rotors to be replaced at 32,000 miles.service order indicated "delamination" of brake rotor caused the wear.this is contrary to the "long life" brakes that were indicated to me during the sale of this vehicle.bought new.

The disc brake pads jam and fail to make proper contact with the rotors when dirt gets in the area that the brake pads ride on 'runners (stainless steel sheet metal covers the mounting frame where it rides . The clearance is so close and road it will jam the pads.this requires disassembly of all of the brake caliper and grinding of the rotor frequently.the pads not pressing on the rotors properly allow the rotor to rust further degrading the brake performance and causes uneven braking and greatly increased stopping distance -- i have had to overhaul the brakes three times and the repair mechanic says all gm trucks have the same problem

Dt:2002 gmc sierra.the consumer states the steering shaft bounced up and down, it was not correctly put in.this caused the front end bounce from the steering box to the steering wheel.this problem has been corrected, but the dealership stated they were having a lot of these problems.this has been happening since the purchase of the vehicle.the consumer thought the vehicle was out of alignment.also, the rotors a had to be replaced because of the shaft bouncing up and down.the right tie rod was also replaced. The problem was constant with the vehicle.

Dt: consumer stated brake failure resulted in extended stopping distance. Took to a dealer for this issue 3 times.dealer's general manager said there was some type of problem but he did not know what caused it. No repairs or parts replaced.on oct 18, 2004 the rear rotors were turned.even after the rotors were turned the brakes still performed poorly.the right fog light fell off while driving.

Our 2002 gmc sierra was being inspected for state inspection when it was discovered that the rotors had completely rusted out. Contacted gmc and they told us that theyknew there was a problem, but that it would only be covered if reoprted during warranty period our warranty had expired as the vehicle had 36,800 miles on it and warranty wasonly for 36,000 miles.rotors had to be replaced because vehicle was unsafe.

Consumer tookvehicle to the dealer for a tire rotation, and was told that the rotors were eating up the brake pads. Dealership repaired the braking system by resurfacing the rotors and providing new pads. However, because of the steel being used the rotors will continue to eat up the pads, and this operation will need to be resolved every 10,000 miles. Manufacturer stated that the climate where consumer lived was the reason why the problem occurred.

My 2002 gmc sierra has a braking problem when stopping from a slow speed. I took my concern to the dealer and they said the rear rotors were rusted and may need to be replaced. I think this should be a warranty issue as the truck has 32,000 miles and is less than 3 years old, it is unsafe to drive as it is. They tell me it is because i live in the northeast and is not a defect in materials. In 2002 at a brake symposium, sponsered by the manufacturers, it was noted that gmc took the metal chromium ouof the rotor alloy to save money. Chromium resists rust.is there any help available?

Dt:while driving vehicle experienced extended stopping distance but no noises.there was no accident or any other problems.took car to dealer ,they stated rotors were rusted and worn out, and needed to be replaced.no problems since.

Dt:the brake rotors are warping.there is rusting in the brake area.the consumer first noticed the problem on september 10, 2005.the consumer had the rotors cut to take off the bad metal.there have been no accidents.

I took my truck in for an oil change and the dealer told me that my truck (50,000 miles) needed new front rotors because mine were "de-laminated" i asked how this could happen and the mechanic could not give me a clear answer. The gm assistance center told me that the dealership told them the reason for this was i refused some dealer recommended maintenance, although the dealership service manager said that was not the case. I spoke to a metalurgist and he stated the problem was most likely from the manufacturing process caused by not cooling the rotors properly after the were cast, since both rotors are only defective on the inside face. I also own a 1990 chevy truck with 270,000 miles that still has the original rotors. I am afraid this defect could cause an occurrence of brake failure and i am afraid to drive the truck under highway conditions. Also, after asking numerous others, no one (other than gm) has heard of this phenomenon.

Dt:the front and rear rotors fell apart. The mechanic had to replace the rotors at 47,000 miles. He said it wasa common problem. The consumer went to the dealer and they said it was normal. The consumer sent letters to gmc and they are returning letters.

Vehicle has 19000 miles on it and the brake rotors are badly scored and rusted, resulting in a pulsating brake pedal and the requirement of greater brake pedal pressure to stop the vehicle. The problem is primarily with the rear brakes, but the front brakes are starting to show the same signs. A recent brake inspection indicates that the brake pads are well within tolerance for wear, but the rotors will not pass pennsylvania state safety inspection in their current condition. I have consulted with at least four other individuals with similar vehicles that have encountered the same problem.

While my 17 year old son was driving, the truck suddenly lost all power steering and brake capability. My son was traveling with his younger brother and a friend in the vehicle.

Vehicle is a 2002 gmc 6.0l 2500hd sierra truck.it has the gm hydroboost braking system (brake assist is from the power steering pump).the pressure line running from the brake booster to the steering rack was incorrectly routed, resulting in a very sharp bend in the flexible part of hose.the hose cracked at this point, and leaked some.the failure was caught early, and there was no accident or fire.however, if this leak had not been noticed, at some point all power assist braking and steering could have been lost.i have pictures of the incorrect routing, and the old hose if needed.

Front steering tie rods folded in half on two occassions while climbing a hill off road. All steering was lost mid way up the hill, with no way to steer the vehicle. This was covered under manufacturer warranty. I am affraid to drive the vehicle. It is in the shop as we speak for the second time.

The contact owns a 2002 gmc sierra. While driving 60 mph, the wheels went in a different direction than the steering wheel. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the issue, but there was no response. The approximate failure mileage was 216,000. The contact owns a 2002 gmc sierra. While driving 20 mph the vehicle swerved from side to side twice for approximately two seconds. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and they stated that they were unable to diagnose the failure. The gm manufacturer was called and stated that he had to pay for a diagnostic test and the contact refused to do so. The failure mileage was 48,000.

There is rattle/vibration in my truck's steering column.any time i go over an uneven surface i hear an annoying rattle coming from under the hood in front the steering wheel, and i feel a consistent vibration in the steering wheel.this rattle started with about 35,000 miles on the vehicle, just in time for the warranty to expire.my truck now has 60,000 miles on it with the same annoying problem.my dealer keeps telling me there is probably going to be a recall on it, so i don't want to pay to repair it (whatever may be wrong with it).

Hasn't failed yet, but there is a rattle in the steering colum which dealer states is normal, sure doesn't feel normal to me. Happens any time the steering wheel is turned. "while driving"

Dt: the contact stated that the intermediate steering shaft was replaced in february 2005 as suggested by a technical service recommendation.the nhtsa item number is 10005165.the technical service bulletin suggested repair has again failed.there was looseness within the steering and a grinding feeling.he took the vehicle to the same dealership that completed the previous repair work.the dealer said the failure was normal, and no real explanation was offered.the second repair was made at the contact'sexpense.

While my 17 year old son was driving, the truck suddenly lost all power steering and brake capability. My son was traveling with his younger brother and a friend in the vehicle.

Front suspension/ steering 'rattles' excessively when in a turn and road rough to the point i must accommodate it in how i driven turns.the rattle almost goes away after the front suspension is lubed but is back in about 500 miles of driving.

When the vehicle made a left or right turn the double cabin made rattling noises.the dealer inspected the vehicle but could not duplicate or correct the problem.*nlm

When traveling between 40 and 50 mph the pickup has a vibration that has been deemed "normal" by the service tech. This determination was by a factory rep.not the local rep as he was unaware of any noise at this speed in any other vehicle. The tech. Did hear and feel this vibration. This continues to be an everyday occurrence.

The vehicle experienced a rough vibration when traveling between 20 mph and 40 mph.

The contact owns a 2002 gmc sierra.

The knock started after the truck turned four thousand miles. The dealer told us that gm reports the knock is normal.it is the first time i''ve heard of a gas motor having an intentional knock. We have had the truck this since it was new and have had the dealer do all the regular maintenance including tire rotations and oil changes.

Doors not mounted correctly, hinges need to be pulled out with framing machine to correct the problem.common problem with gmc trucks is what the autobody shop states.

(1) defective catch on tailgate would not always keep gate closed(2) gate unexpectedly opened traveling 35mph, loosing several pieces of furniture. Also, tailgate dropped onto highway damaging it badly. Discovered both cables rusted thru also.could have caused accident or worse.(3) will bring into gmc dlr on first chance, 10/25/04.

My 2002 gmc 2500hd truck this past weekend had a failure in the tailgate cable system. I was driving my atv into the bed when the left cable broke and the tailgate suddenly lowered a few inches. Fortunately, the right cable didn't break or serious injury would have occurred. After looking at the broken cable, there was evidence of rust inside the plastic covering on the wire strands that make up the cable. There is no way to inspect the cables for a potential hazard prior to a catastrophic occurrence. I will be replacing mine with a stainless strap system so this dangerous defect won't happen again.

The tailgate straps on my 2002 gmc seirra both broke at the same time and the tailgate fell down to the bumper. My local gm dealer knew of a problem but stated that no new item had been made to correct the strap problem, so they just put new straps back on my truck, just like the ones that broke.

While loading the vehicle, the tailgate support cables broke without warning. As a result the owner was thrown to the ground. The owner sustained hand injuries. Please provide additional information.

Consumer stated whilevehicle standingatastop tailgatesteel strapsbroke, causing tailgate to drop. *mr

The tail gate cable snapped in half when the passenger was exiting the back of the pick up. The passenger hit his/her head on the driveway. The cause of the cable failure was undetermined. Consumer noted both cables snapped sending his assistant face first to the ground. His knees were first to make contact with the concrete and he laid there several minutes before trying to move. *ph

When opening the tailgate two support brackets broke.as a result, the tailgate fell to the ground.both supports were replaced.there were broken cables. *sc

Vehicle pulls to the left at highway speeds.2 attempts by the dealer have failed to remedy the situation. Consumer feels this condition presents a danger to himself and the general public whenever his full attention is diverted from trying to keep the vehicle going straight.

Front suspension/ steering 'rattles' excessively when in a turn and road rough to the point i must accommodate it in how i driven turns.the rattle almost goes away after the front suspension is lubed but is back in about 500 miles of driving.

I have a 2002 3/4 ton crew cab sierra with duramax diesel and allison transmission.the truck has 17000 miles.over the last two weeks, i have had two shock absorbers fail catastrophically due to a weld at the bottom attachment point.in the first case, the shock was lodged in the bottom a arm assembly.this caused the steering to behave strangely.upon servicing the other shock, a crack in the weld was found.my dealer says that shocks are a maintenance item and refuses do anything about this the customer assistance is also not concerned, though they filed a case..1-204723707

2002 gmc sierra denali wheel bearing failure left & right side as well as front differential trouble.

2002 gmc sierra experienced extended stopping distance.*mrthe vehicle's front end bounced and made noise.it was later determined that the problem was a faulty driver's side front hub bearing assembly.after many phone calls and letter the consumer received a check from the manufacturer.the check covered the part not the labor.the consumer wants to know why this part was recalled in canada but not in the us.

Rear axle unstable when cornering over moderate bumps. Loses lateral traction. Dealer failed to make a genuine effort to replicate the problem. I replaced rear shocks at my own expense, problem was reduced but not eliminated.

The rear end of vehicle skips back and forth when i hit a bump/when i'm going on a ramp turning right with the weight of the vehicle on the left side and hit a bump or wash board it is the worst.

After a long trip the rear end will vibrate and shifts when taking off from a stop. Dealer drove vehicle on long trip but could not duplicate the problem.nlm

The vehicle tire pressure was 38-40 psi in all four tires. The proper psi should be 60-psi front 80-psi rear. Consumer stated that the tire pressure was incorrect in all four tires.

Dealer has replaced general, ameri-tech tires size 25570r16,three times because they would not balance. The consumer stated that there was still vibration of tires after they were replaced and balanced because the tires were poor quality.

I was towing my 33 ft 2000 thor travel trailer, using my 2002 gmc sierra 2500 hd crew cab diesel truck.as i pulled into my storage lot the trailer hitch receiver that was supposed to be welded to a factory installed load leveler trailer hitch completely broke off.the safety chains and the safety brake pull wire were all attached to the hitch receiver.subsequently the trailer separated from the truck with no safety equipment attached.the trailer crashed to the ground damaging the front towing part of the trailer, slide out hydraulics and air conditioner so far.i took the gmc truck and the broken hitch to rydel gmc in van nuys, california.they said that it looked like the weld had never taken because there was paint between the weld and the truck body. Rydel said that they would have to contact the factory rep to get an ok to fix the hitch.the factory rep told them that my ''good will time'' was used, whatever that means, and that i had too many miles on the truck (67,000), as if mileage had something to do with it.i asked if their towing hitches had a limited mileage warranty, i got no answer.i took the part of the hitch that broke off and the truck to a certified weld shop for a second opinion on the quality of the weld.i was told that most of the weld had never adhered to the metal and the part of the weld that broke never bonded to the steel.the certified hitch weld shop said it will cost $550.00 to remove the old hitch and install a new one.i feel that the defective weld on the hitch could cause a serious road hazard and potential loss of life.i just pray that the thousands of trailers that break off their towing vehicles are not the result of defective welds.

The rubber gram was missing.

On two separate occasions over the past few years, this truck has had frame damage caused by rust / corrosion to the extent that it either would not pass inspection or it compromised the operation of the vehicle.more specifically, the frame cross-members have had holes rotted through them and the shock mounts have rotted from the frame.presently, the two cross-members that go over the fuel tank have large rust holes over the fuel tank.also, the rear crossmember has rotted areas on the top left side.

I started the vehicle after vehicle was sitting for about 4 hours.while backing out of my driveway, the vehicle started accelerating, even though i had not yet pressed the accelerator.even with my foot pressing the brake pedal as hard as i could, the vehicle stopped briefly, but then the rear tires briefly spun and the vehicle started moving in reverse again, dragging the locked front tires.after 25 feet, vehicle hit parked vehicle on other side of street.vehicle stopped, but rear wheels continued to spin until i put the vehicle in park.it seemed like throttle was stuck open, even though i had not once hit the accelerator.

When the brake was applied the consumers foot also pressed the gas pedal.the dealer inspected the vehicle but could not duplicate or correct the problem.*nlm

Rough idle, vehicle runs poorly. Contacted dealer. Please provide more information.

While driving with the cruise control set to 70 mph the vehicle acceleratedto 90 mph without warning. The consumer stated she disengaged the cruise control, however the vehicle continued to accelerate. The vehicle was thrown into neutral in order to slow it down.please provide additional information.

When jacknifed in a uturn the trailer broke the rear window which exploded into razor sharp shards of glass cutting me on the hand from the drivers seat.

Gmc sierra. I have had it in for the mirrors vibrating 4 times. I can not see 200 feet behind my vehicle at times as required by california vc 26709. Gmc has called it a safety issue and blames it on the following in an email i received 12/23/03.after much discussion with technical sources, we have come to the following conclusions.the vibration in your mirrors is a characteristic of the vehicle.therefore, swapping out the mirror with one of the same type, which is the only type your vehicle can accommodate, will not solve that problem.i think there should be a recall.

After a total of 19 visits to the gmc service department with no results mirror still vibrates arbitration through the bbb was attempted on 10-4-02. Results in favor of gmc arbitrator agreed mirror is mfg defect, but provided no assistance in getting it repaired. Other 2002 like vehicles were tested and found to have the same problem. This defect is make/model wide!all i want is the mirror vibration to stop.i really don't even use the mirror anymore creating a safety hazard.dt

The mirrors on my gmc 1500 z71 truck keep breaking. I've only taken it through the car wash, when the attendent folds in the mirrors on both sides, when finished i fold them back and then they break. It has happened 2 times and the cost is $200 per mirror. Very unreasonable for a mirror. I have called gm(case 1-328469134) and they refuse to do antthing for me.

Exterior driver side rear view mirror had to be replaced 3 times because of severe vibration.the vibration was so severe that the driver was unable to see oncoming vehicles.

While having the tires rotated a technician noticed a groove cut from a rock between the brake caliper and the rim.
