When turning the windsheild wipers on, the motor makes a lot of noise.the manufacturer has yet to be contacted.vehicle also has the following problems: engine coolant tank and brake master cylinder are leaking, brakes and fuel pump are noisy, and passenger side defroster does not flow enough air.*ml
The engine started to lose power on a hill and by the time we got to the top the engine was making a trerrible sound. All the guages were reading normal. The gmc dealer or even head office are not willing to replace the motor. I feel that they should replace the motor for it is not our fault that this happen. We maimtained the truck to the highest standards.

This problem occured first in october 1998 and courtesy pontiac, where the vehicle was purchased did not find the problem! last week upon returning from new mexico the engine lost power in missouri and i stopped at a gasstation and found that there was no coolant in the tank. This was refilled and one exit further the oil was checked after the problem did not appear to be corrected. This time no oil was in the engine. Before the travel a gmc dealer in shelbyville ky did the maintenance on it, filling 5 quarts of oil in!
Oil is leaking from the engine compartment.nlm

Problem with fuel system evac canister. The canister, located in left front of engine compartment has a fresh air vent opening for partial venting of vacum directed towards fuel vapor control. It is covered by a loose fitting cap. This un-protected opening allows dirt to enter the top of the canister and eventually clog the opening. When this occurs the entire vacum force is apparently directed to the fuel tank causing fuel tank to collapse. An older model truck (i believe it was a 1997) was examined and a similar canister fresh air vent was stamped with the words "air cleaner" though it too was not connected to the air cleaner but was only covered by a loose fitting cap. This problem is probably not evident in vehicles operated on highway only. A local service station, john melhiser's amoco, petersburg indiana, related to me that he knew of 3 other area pickups (farm use) that experienced this problem. Symptoms of emminent fuel tank collapse based on my own experience are: 1-increased vacum in fuel tank as noticed when removing the fuel cap; 2 fuel gage begins to malfunction (caused by bottom of tank being pushed upward on the sending unit). I suspect that the effect is more pronounced at lower fuel levels. I contacted gm's customer service # jan 26 this year. I contacted them again march 16. They indicated that the problem had been noted but that no firther action was planned. Gm indicated that a "product allegation report" could be filed if the problem caused significant property damage or bodily harm. I suggested that they should at least produce a maintenance insert for the owners manual and service bulletins since dealers i checked with were not aware of the potential for plugging of the vent and collapse of the fuel tank.a more secure fix would be to vent the suction to the air cleaner (as was apparently intended on the earlier model) to ensure that foreign matter does not clog the vent.
Consumer found fluid on the passenger's floorboard.a mechanic inspected the vehicle, and informed the consumer that the fluid was condensation from the air conditioner . Air conditioningfluid caused the blower motor to short out, causing condensationto accumulate faster than normal.
Dt: contact stated the jack failed during use on 7-22-2005. Contact had no problems with jack prior to today. Dealer said they appreciated him called them.as he began to apply pressure the threads stripped. He has not talked to the manufacturer.

Intermittently windshield wipers became inoperable, obstructing the driver's view. A recall had been issued on similar makes and models. However, this vehicle wasnot included due to vin.the consumer turned the switch off then onagain and the wipers would work again. As time went on the problem worsened. The consumer had to turn the switch on and off several times. Sometimes they wouldn't come on for 15 minutes or until the next day. The recall stopped at the 1997 model year. The consumer was the only driver of the vehicle and has since paid to the have the module replaced.*phalso the tailgate did not aloways lock into place.
Don't have my vin handy at the moment b/c my truck is in the shop having $1400 of transmission work done on it.it's a 1998 gmc sierra 2wd, and the transmission went out 8/21/03.the tranny had 84,000 miles before comlete failure.the truck was driven by anexceptionally gentle driver, never used for towing (even though it came with a towing "package") and never abused in any way.yesterday, it wouldn't reverse or go into 1st gear.two weeks prior it began shifting hard, emitting a loud "clank" sound...we knew the end was near!
While driving vehicle transmission stopped shifting, also odometer/speedometer stopped working.in addition, the abs light came on while driving.cause has not been determined.
The transmission failed while driving.
The contact owns a 1998 gmc sierra. The contact stated there was a transmission leak. The failure was not diagnosed nor was the vehicle repaired. The manufacturer was contacted about the failure. The failure mileage and vin were unavailable.
Transmission went out while consumer was traveling at 55mph, and thenvehicle slowed down, and could not shift gears anymore.vehicle was undriveable.
Consumer was downshifting from 5th to 4th and vehicle went into reverse.
While driving vehicle transmission stopped shifting, also odometer/speedometer stopped working.in addition, the abs light came on while driving.cause has not been determined.
Transmission made grinding noises in low and high gears, and shifting was rough. Drove directly to transmission shop. Called service manager at local dealership about manufacturer responsibility and was told they could offer no assistance. Vehicle was only 4,000 over warranty.
The transmision has a harsh shift almost as if the engine mis-fires as it changes from gear to gear.cronic has reset the electronic memory valves with no results.i am now being smoothed over by them because i don't believe they know of anything else to do.i trust that a gmc truck, number one in my book, this expensive would perform more smoothly than the competitor's truck (ford, which outshifts gmc hands down) would.your response as to what it is will be appreciated!!let me here from youmike brock
I have a 1998 gmc z71 with 61,000 miles that i bough new and just had to have a new transmission put in at a cost of $2000.00. When i told the serviceman what the transmission was doing he automatically new what the problem was. He said that it was the shaft housing that had busted and it messed up the whole transmission. It sounded like it was a problem that happens quite often by the way he responded. He said that the shaft housing was not as heavily built as the new one they installed. Does this mean that other owners will have the same problem with there truck around 60,000 miles? it sounds like a deffect to me if the shaft housing was not built strong enough to take the use that a truck is put through. I tow a small 5x10 utility trailer and have hauled a 27 travel trailer one time with this truck so it does not haul a lot of weight. I just hope that i do not have to have another one in about 60,000 miles. I like my truck and have payed a lot of money for it and plan tokeep it.
Leaks in transmission.
Problems with transmission shifting incorrectly.while driving, the transmission became hot, and disengaged from overdrive to lock up mode, and blew 2 quarts of automatic transmission fluid out the vents*mr
Front end shook while braking.braking distance seemed normal.vehicle was taken to dealer numerous times, and dealer replaced and turned front rotors four times. In may 2003, mechanic noticed rear axle seal was leaking grease onto rear brake drums, causing rear brakes to fail, seal was replaced. Currently, seal is leaking again, rear brake drums need to be replaced.
Initial problem09/02/98 was both rear axle seals leaking causing brakes to fade.again on 11/04/98 rear axle seals leaking, adjusted brakes. 11/06/98 brakes locking-up.11/13/98 brakes grabbing, replaced both rear brake shoes, abs light on-module not activating brake release-replaced anti-lock brake module-master cyl bypassing-replaced master cyl. 01/20/99 abs light comes on-brake peddle hard to push-replaced abs brake valve.03/23/99 brakes failed to slow vehicle-involved in accident-replaced abs pressure modulating valve.

Consumer states that when they hit the brakes the seatbelt will not lock up, which causes seatbelt to be useless in a crash. Cause unknown dealer notified.
Seatbelt retractor gets jammed and will not move on the track . Dealer says vehicle needs a new belt.
Seat belt not retracting.yh
Driver's seatbelt system malfunctioned. Consumer needs to pull hard in order for the seatbelt to come out of the housing. It retracts "too hard," and not enough slack in the seatbelt system.dealer said seatbelt system is used for child seat protection.
The passenger side seat belt fails to retract back into it's holster. The vehicle was taken to the dealership where the mechanic had to replace the entire retractor mechanism.the problem was caused by a failure in the system. *ph *sc
When applying the brakes in a sudden stop, the middle lapseat belt did not lock, causing passenger to move forward near the dash area. Also, car seat in middle rear belt, doesn't lock, causing car seat to fall over, resulting in 2-year old hitting his head. Abs brakes fail, fad eon some stops, will not stop.
Brakes failed while backing up and hit a tree. Found brake line was severely rusted and replaced brake line.
Catastrophic brake failure on state highway. No accident or injuries, but repairs included brake lines, calipers and pads due to corrosion of said lines and caliper assemblies. Shop said this is a common occurrence for gm products regardless of age of the vehicle.
The contact owns a 1998 gmc sierra. The contact stated that the abs warning light illuminated after depressing the brake pedal. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where the technician was unable to rectify the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. When applying the brakes, the abs kicks on.this occurs when the vehicle is traveling less than 8 mph.no codes are set and the abs light is not illuminated.this matches your nhtsa action number pe05020.the dealership states it is the exact problem gm is monitoring with the 1999 - 2002.however, they are not including the 1998 models.
Vehicle has been to shop several times.first time:front calipers rebuilt.no change.second time:front calipers replaced.rear brake shoes replaced with a type not originally meant for my truck.entire front suspension removed and jacks installed so that alignment could be performed to specs from some gm engineers that were contacted.still pulls, but much better.after some time, noticed ds front tire wearing on the outside edge.third time:informed them of abnormal wear and that truck still pulls under braking.they realigned it and the "gmc area service manager" road tested it ok.it still pulls under braking and now it pulls to the right constantly.i called the owner of the dealership, he has me contact the service manager for a meeting with the gmc area service manager.we take it for a road test.he claims he cannot feel a brake pull, but agrees that it needs aligned.i asked him to replace or repurchase the truck.he would not but offered a 5 year/75k mile warranty.i accepted.fourth time:front end aligned again.truck drives normally again, but now it pulls to the right, while braking, worse than ever.i was looking for the lemon law when i found this site.i cannot find any tsb's or recalls on my truck, but i understand that my truck is not the only truck they have found with this problem.so there must be many more out there, why isn't gmc addressing the problem?i hope you can help me with [email protected]
Abs braking system not engaging. Hub damage. Continuous need for new brakes.finally an accident in nov 2002.after 7 months the repairs complete but i had to pay for new hubs even though this is a brake issue.after research i find that the hubs may be made improperly. The wreck was caused by a misaligned tone ring or abs sensor.i believe the hubs are a part of this but the dealer denies it.my insurance covered most of the repairs weaver auto repaired many hoses and the engine oil coolant linesand on the 18th of june 2003,first day driving the truck after the repairs my engine acted like it blew. Now they claim that it may have spun 2 bearings.( i learned this can be caused by oil/radiator damage) ( i drove the truck 80 miles total after the repairs.)i have been in contact with the dealer as well as gmc since the original purchase of the truck in 1998 when i had to replace the first set of brakes prematurely, they denied any problems. A while down the road i learned of a recall on this year and model truck due to the abs system. I contacted them and was told my truck was not included in the recall. This truck does have a brake problem i have complained and takenm it in to be checked constantly.financially drained, i am at my wits end. *nlm
When applying the abs brakes onwet pavement the rear brakes locks up, causing extended stopping distance, cause unknown.
While driving and trying to make sudden stops the brake pedal goes all the way to the floor. Also, abs light comes on, and the truck won't stop.
Front brakes heated up, melted wheel weights off and burned abs wires. Truck would not stop. Was there a recall on brakes on this truck. Please let me know and is there anything we could do to keep this from happening again. Thanks
Dt: consumer states: have problem with abs system. Had front brakes replaced twice by gm. When got vehicle back drove it home, and took it right back.the brake pedal felt low, and dealer said it was normal. When ycoming to a stop abs system kicked in, got worse and worse. Coming to a normal intersectionabs would kick in, took vehicle back dealer, kept vehicle and dealer said it was known for having low brake pressure. Took back again, replaced left and right side abs sensor. Still haingsame problem.
Dt:the contact states there is nhtsarecall 05v379000l for the abs system. However, the recall does not include this model year vehicle although it hasexperienced the same problemas indicated on the recall.while he was pulling into a parking garage the brakes would not stopthevehicle.the brake failure caused vehicle to bump into a wall.the vehicle has not been to a service dealer to determine the cause of the problem.
No summary listed for above vehicle.
Abs failed, causing extended stopping distance.contacted dealer and they replaced the abs front hubs.
Dt: when consumer used brakes and was going at least 30-40 mph and ran over a seem/pothole, or manhole the abs brakes completely shut off.took the vehicle to a gmc dealer, and was told they couldn't find anything wrong.
On repeated times braking at lights and stop signs with an rough road surface the rear tires will skip, the abs system will buzz, the brake pedal will go down below the pressure i am applying and it feels like the truck will not stop. Once the truck has stopped the brake pedal is on the floor. When released it slowly comes back up. When accelerating away from this stop, it feels like the brakes are still applied. I have learned after many times of this happening i have to stop the truck, back up a bit and i can feel them release. I can drive normally then. When this happens, it is a intermittent problem, and i have reached my destination i can smell the brakes in the front as if they have been applied while driving. The rotors are now blue and the pads are now worn down to less than 30% of factory thickness. The dealer on three occasions has said they can not duplicate this problem. It is my driving habits on the brake wear and is common for this model to wear brakes like this at this mileage. I also can not stop this vehicle on a panic stop situation. Last month i had to stop the vehicle in a panic at 2-3 mph. I hit the brakes, the vehicle nosed down, the abs buzzed and the truck continued to roll into the car in front of me. The brake pedal was on the floor with no further travel left. I was standing on the pedal pulling up on the steering wheel and the truck would not stop. The next morning i took it back to the selling dealer durant autoplex. I could demonstrate this condition as could the service manager. He said this is not uncommon for this vehicle. He even said his demo was worse than mine. I filed a complaint with him and gmc. I had my truck fixed and ron bayers the service manager said he had the abs system check and double checked and found no fault with any component in the abs system. He said there have been many complaints from owners with similar vehicle that can not stop them under a panic stop even at hwy speeds. What do i do? please advise.
Dt: abs will not engage at low speeds on slippery surfaces.
Dt:there is a problem with the abs sensors.the abskicks in when slowing down for stopping.the problemoccurred since october of 2003.he has to push hard on the brake to get it to stop the vehicle.when he applies pressure to the brake it pushes back against his foot.the contact is concerned that someone could be hurt due to the delayed stopping.the contact had taken vehicleto a dealer, and they said that the sensors were dirty, andhad major corrosionwhich causedthem to work improperly, andboth sensors to fail.the contact had them cleaned.the problem has not occurred since he had them cleaned.the contact feared that the problem will come back.
During low speed breaking my antilock brakes kick in causing the my truck not to stop when intended.
Anti- lock brakes activate at low speeds when not needed making stopping difficult.this occurs due to problems with the wheel hub speed sensors. The 1999and up models have been recalled for this problem but the 1998 have not. I have had this problem repaired twice.
Anit lock brakes grab, and sometimes they don't work. This could cause an accident because brakes don't hold when applied. Contacted dealer, connot find cause of problem.
Vehicle jumps lanes when using brakes.brakes appear to be undersized for vehicle. Also, consumer has had 3 front pads replacements within 20,000 miles. If consumerwas taking a triphe would have to replace brakes.
My wife and i own a 1998 gmc k1500 4x4 pickup truck.this vehicles suffers from the stopping problemdue to fouling of the speed sensors in the wheel hubs that was the subject of a recall for similar 1999-2002 vehicles. The nhtsa has encouraged gm/gmc to recall similar 1999-2002 vehicles.the 1998vehicles with the same brake system design was not included in the recall - you guys missed the boat.why didn't you suggest that gm/gmc recall all vehicles regardless of year with the sameproblem?
While driving under wet conditions only, when applying the back brakes, they react as if they aregoing to lock up.but the anti-lock sytem reacts, and prevents lockage. Also, causes the back brakes to go out. Dealer has been contaced. Vehicle has been to the dealer three times*ml
I was driving on a dirt road ( luckily) the ground was wet and it had been raining, another vehicle appeared and i applied the brakes. There were no brakes. I kept trying but nothing happened until a few moments later. To avoid the other person i turned the truck and the rear end hit a tree. I paid for the repairs myself. There was a recall on the braking systems of my truck in that time period, but gmc said my truck was not included. ( the same exact problem was occurring in the recalled vehicles.) this is not the first time a recall has excluded us. Both of our vehicles have had problems identical to defects on recalled autos, but for some reason they will not check our vehicles. I believe the problems are the same, but due to financial implications the manufacturer is trying to limit the known autos as much as possible.
Abs braking system malfunctioned, causingabs to activate when it was not suppose to do soon dry pavement or even when not braking.please provide further information.
1998 gmc sierra experiencing problems with the front abs sensors. *mr red grease was inside of the sensor area.the brakes would pulsate just below 15 mph.the vehicle would shake and pull to the left each time the brakes were applied below 15 mph.the brake pedal would bounce up and down creating an uneasy feeling to everyone in the vehicle.the abs would activate prematurely.the consumer felt that he should not be charged for a faulty brake system. *sc
Both front brake abs sensors on my 1998 gmc sierra 4 wheel drive half ton pickup truck failed during a 90 day period in 2005. This caused the abs to activate at low speed stops nearly resulting in accidents and requiring the replacement of both front wheel bearing/abs sensor assemblies at the cost of about $800. This vehicle was purchased new in august 1998 and has about 65,000 miles of use. The local gm rep and gmc's customer relations tells me that there is nothing gm will do about it. The local dealer tells me it is a common problem and has been for many years!.
I have a 1998 gmc sierra pick-up truck.i have experienced ongoing anti lock brake sensor issues since last spring.they engage at low speed and make it hard to stop if you are not prepared for the failure at low speed.the dealer i took the vehicle to (capitol cadillac-lansing mich.)said they "couldn't recreate the problem".this was a ridiculous statement because it "recreated" itself twice as i was leaving the dealership parking lot.they were just not interested in dealing with it. There is an active recall for this problem.why does it not include my truck??i don't see why i should have to spend hundreds of dollars to have this fixed if gm is taking care of other owners with the same problem.i am very disappointed.

Ongoing / intermittent problem with abs system. Rear wheels permaturely lock up, causing extended stopping distance. Dealer notified, but unable to correct this problem. Seeking help from nhtsa tin this matter.

I have had a anti-locking brake problem for the last 12 months. I have to have one side repaired already. I am going to have the other side fixed shortly. I read a aricle in the local paper that this was a gm problem. I contacted the service center at the dealership that i bought the truck. They told me to call gm customer support that they could not fix this problem without gm approval. I called gm and was told after reviewing my situation that the truck was to old and had to many miles. This is a 1998 gmc sierra pickup with 93,000 miles. It had 78,000 miles at the time this was discovered. I would like to have this paid for by gm and reimbursed for the repair i paid for already.

*sc
Brake design is inadequate for size of vehicle, one ton 4wd truck also most3/4 suburbans and trucks have the same problem. In the past the truck has pull hard leftacross the road with no prior warning, brake pads are required to be replaced depending on pads every 5000-10000 miles. This truck has been in under warranty three times to replace pads, once to replace rotors, once to rebuild calipers, and once to replace rear drums with 21000 miles on the vehicle. It appears that normal passenger design size brakes were used on a light truck and that the proportioning between front and rear utilize the rear brakes very little. This brake life is with out any towing or heavy hauling. Given the life which is abnormally low, during steep mountian driving on a long trip the front pads could fail without warning and the front appears to be doing all the braking on under designed size pads. Why else will the 2000 models crew cab 4wd have hugh 4 wheel disc brake setups?? gm has done nothing to retrofitor resolve issues except replace parts over and over, reference gm file # 99063603...thanks in advance for any assistance you can provide.
When driving vehicle itdrives very rough, meaning the vehilce vibrates and shakesconsumer took the vehicle to the dealership, and they replaced the rotors/pads andshoes, rear axle, and hubs. But vehicle still shakes.
When braking front calipers stay engaged and do not retract.consumer is very concerned about brakes reliability.
Vehicle jumps lanes when using brakes.brakes appear to be undersized for vehicle. Also, consumer has had 3 front pads replacements within 20,000 miles. If consumerwas taking a triphe would have to replace brakes.
When applying the brakes it feels as if there is pulsation from one side to the other. Dealer says there are heat cracks in rotors and need to be replaced for 3rd or 4th time.
There issevere vibration when braking due to rotors that are prematurely wharping. Cause in unknown.
1998 gmc sierra. Gmc brake line corrosion investigation.the consumer stated he experienced a corrosion related failure of the line supplying the rear brakes.the failed line went from a fitting over the gas tank to a bracket on the frame over the rear axle.from the bracket, a hose went to the differential, where the lines went out to the rear brake cylinder. An inspection showed no other corrosion.
Dt:noticed while underneath the truck thatframe was wet. Could see the brake lines corroded. Noticed this onaugust 29, 2005. Had not contacted gmc. When pushing the brakes they work, but doesn't feel like it should, it's like stepping on a grape.

Gmc 1998 sierra p/u- steering suddenly becomes loose and steering wheel jerks to the right while decelerating and turning right. Problem also occurs when making left turns although not a drastic. There are several complaints, however no solutions from gmc or dealership. I have had many close calls while highway driving when the steering suddenly jerks to the right. Gm dealer has no clue as to what the problem is.
While making slow right hand turns consumer notice surging in the steering wheel intermittently. Dealer has been contacted.
Windshield wiper partial failure.works sometimes...sometimes not.perhaps a short in the switch. Steering problem is hard to discribe.at low engine rpm's, expecially at idle its as if there is no power steering at all.steering wheel is extremely hard to turn.then, at road speed, at times when youturn the wheel to about the two o'clock position the steering wheel will suddenly loose all 'feel' and will 'fall' to about the four o'clock position.the steering is still operational as the truck will veer if you don't catch it first and correct.the steering system just looses all feel and there is little or no effort involved with turning the wheel.we've had one shop look at it but they could find nothing wrong.
Complaint received via e-mail."my pickup has occasional resistance when moving the steering wheel while driving. It feels like something is catching and then letting go. The steering wheel jerks a little when this happens. It's more annoying that anything. The truck has 130,000 miles on it. I bought it with 44,000 miles. The truck has been into three different shops without the problem corrected. "

We had the two rear windows open travling for app 36miles -55mph.thangot on i75 south app25miles -70mph when the window closed creating a presure sounding pop.glass spred through the truck spraying glass on the passager side rear seat and down the side of the truck.if a child or passager were in that seat it could have been a real safety proplem.some may try to say it was a stone but we were in the left lane going south and there we no cars next to us.the sound was a presure sound.i feel this is a defect and if it happened to us it will happen to others.
The tailgate on our vehicle fell off, while driving, after the support cables had broken.luckily this occurred on a lightly traveled road so that no vehicles behind the truck hit the tailgate.the tailgate is gone.all that remains are half of the broken support cables.

The frame resonant vibration frequency on this truck precisely matches the tire rotation freauency at about 45 mph.this causes very anoying bouncing of the rear end at 45 mph.when brakin at 45 mph, the rear end jumps about uncontrolably and could easily lead to an accident.i believe it is a design flaw.only the extended cab models have this problem.if one uses the exact same frame that is on the regular cab model for the extended cab model and simply makes it longer, the stiffness will be less and could lead to this problem.i believe it is the result of inadequate frame stiffness, and i believe gmc knows (and has known) this and has made a business decision to put up with the complaints rather than fix the problem.all owners of similar models of gmc and chevy that i have talked to have told me they have the same problem.gm should not be allowed to ignore a potential safety problem.
Within 10,000 miles the rear end of the vehicle has been replaced three times.cause unknown.please give any further details.

The consumer stated that while driving there's was a sizzling noise coming from the engine compartment.
