While driving 45 mph consumer's vehicle crashed head oninto a tree.driver's side air bag did not deploy, howeverpassenger's side air bag deployed.driver sustaineddislocated knuckles.

While driving 25-35-mph over some bumps in the road, the driver's and passenger's airbagsdeployed, causing injuries todriver.previously, the airbag light was comingon / off. Dealer said it was a problem with the airbag chip, and they would not deploy.but in this case, they did.

While driving 25-30 mph on a smooth dirt road both frontalairbags deployed. Consumer was able to pull over safely. Gmc will replace airbags free of charge only if consumer will sign release. If it happens again, they will not be liable. Airbag sensor was sent to detroit, no problem found. Vehicle at dealer since incident.

While pulling into a parking space the vehicle struck a light pole at approximately 5-10 mph; both air bags did not deploy. Dealer notified.

Electrical system shuts down at low and high speeds.replaced battery, battery connections, cables and alternator but the problem persists over the years.it is a dangerous hazardous situation.

I was returning to albuquerque, nm from amarillo, tx pulling a trailer with an antique stove in my trailer.immediately before leaving amarillo, i had my friend check all of the trailer lights and their functioning.they all worked fine.i took the scenic route through hereford entering onto interstate highway 40 at santa rosa, nm at about 9:00 pm - it was dark.before long a semi passed me an he flicked his headlights.i wasn't sure what the flicking of his lights meant.about 30 miles later a semi passed me right before a big hill.he immediately lost his speed going up the hill and in a few moments i was right behind him.i did not want to pass him since i was pulling the trailer, so i stayed behind him as he continued to slow down to around 55 mph.another semi approached very fast from behind and there were other cars in the fast lane.at the last second the semi swerved around me to the left and passed me and honked his horn at me.he narrowly missed running into the rear of my trailer.this time i new something was up, so i pulled out at the clines corners exit and stopped as soon as i could.sure enough, all of the lights on the trailer were out.i pushed on the wiring coupler and they all came on.i went about 10 more miles and pulled off at another exit to check the lights.they were still on, but i pushed the coupler together to help ensure it was working loose.all of the trailer lights went out and no matter how much i played with the coupler they would not come back on.i spent the next 45 minutes laying on the cold pavement with a flashlight cutting the wire to the license plate light on my truck and splicing in some wire to get the lights on the rear of the trailer to light up.i also had to create a new ground wire.the coupler system is made by velvac near milwaukee, wi.i would be happy to send you the leftover junk parts. The vehicle stalled 5 times in one morning while driving to work. The weather warmed up outside and the vehicle ran and started fine. The next evening the vehicle started fine, i got 1/2 block down the road it stalled again. I waited for a few minutes and it ran fine.the next morning it started fine and i drove it for miles, had no problems with it stalling. We called gmc to see if there was a recall on windshield wiper motor, because the wipers would work when they wanted to work. Not when you needed them to work. They had told us that there was also an ignition coil problem with this truck-they called the gmc dealer that was to do the recall work. A faulty ignition coil can give the same side effects as a defective fuel pump. We drove the vehicle to the dealer, when we turned the vehicle off it would not restart. The recall work was performed on the vehicle, but still would not start. The gmc dealer told us it was most likely the fuel pump, the dealer told us the fuel pumps in this vehicle go out "frequently."but, he offered us to replace the fuel pump for $450.+ including labor. Or sell us one over the counter for approximately $425.00 + tax. And we could install it ourselves. Needless to say, we had the vehicle towed to our house and now are deciding what type of fuel pump should be bought for a vehicle that the fuel pump goes out frequently in. Our biggest concern is that this truck has 85,066 miles on it, and has been maintained to the highest standards. Why are the vehicles fitted with faulty/defective products. The pump can catch on fire, or go out if you hit too many bumps in the road. That is a manufacturer problem of a faulty product. Please let us know, how many fuel pumps we should plan on replacing in the normal life of this vehicle. *la

The engine rod bearings started making noise at 80,000 miles. The noise progressivly got worse so i was advised to run a 15w-40 oil and run the motor to failure. Gm gave me a price of $2500 for engine replacement saying it would be very costly to just replace rod bearings and the warranty on the new motor was better. As far as the steering problem, the truck started to under-steer at about 4500 miles. As you enter a turn (left or right) sometimes the truck just dives in that dirction and you must compensate in the other direction. It has gotten so bad that i am the only one who drives the truck. A friend of mine has a 97 chevy truck and had the same problem, he had it repaired for the sum of $1000.

Dexcool is coolant used in the system, but it destroys the cooling system when mixed with air.gmc will not recognize the fact that it put dexcool in the system and when the waterpump developed a weephole the air that got in destroyed the cooling system.this is gmc's and dexcool's fault.

I have 5# of paper work on this one,had trouble with thie steering gear box at 1150 miles, had rocker and lifters done at 4407 miles, again at 6344 miles, brakes again at 15986 miles,24116 drive shaft out of balance, i'm still haveing trouble with the brakes some times it is like on brake and some times it's like they lock up the back wheels at the speed of 5mph on dry pavement or what ever surfes, or at the stop sign while holding the brake, you can here the abs. I have tryed dealing with bbb, and gmc put got no where, i wrote to the att gen's of both mn and tx, but got no where.i have all the paper work from day one, i"m paying over 40.000.00 for this.

Was informed by repair shop that this is a common problem with 5.7 liter eng. Factory installed front / rear sealer is weak material. Need to install gasket type seal. Defect can cause engine to overheat and fail. Failure could result in fire or purchase of new engine. Please advise.

I purchased this truck new, and at approximately 23,000 i was driving the vehicle at around 55mph when the engine failed. It did not sputter or knock, it just quit, all the gauges, engine quit instantly. I pulled over to the side of the road and turned the key off, and then re-started the engine.motor started without hesitation, and i proceeded down the road. Two days later, with lots of driving time in between, the same thing happened. It died, i pulled over, turned of ignition, and re-started the motor, and again the motor started without hesitation. About two weeks later, i was driving at about the same speed and again the same thing, except this time the motor would not re-start.vehicle was towed to the dealership, and it was determined that the fuel pump had failed. It was replaced and i had no problems until about a month ago, approximatley 05/15/2001, my vehicle started to behave in the same way. While turning left at an intersection, the vehicle died, and i was in the middle of oncoming traffice that was approaching. I re-started the engine and proceeded to get out of the way of oncoming traffic. This has occured several times over the past two months, with the most recent event occuring yesterday, 07222001, in which i was almost "t-boned" at an intersection when the engine failed. I have kept the fuel filter changed and i not use the same gas station consitantly. The fuel pump has always made a loud buzzing noise, even the first pump that was replaced at the dealership made this same noise. I understand that gmc re-designed this pump for this 1997 model. What realy got me interested in this problem, is not only the fact that i have had some close calls with almost being involved in an accident, but one of my co-workers is having the same apparant problem with her "1997 gmc jimmy." it has the same vortec v6 engine as my truck. The delearshipt stated they can not id the problem, unless it "runs a code, or fails while they have it. Thanks.

Failure of tailgate support cable on my 1997 gmc sierra short bed pick-up.vehicle was primarily used for transportation to work and home.cargo is very rarely transported, but on the day of the failure several dozen 2x4s were transported less than 3 miles with the tailgate down.the left side cable support broke during transport.the load was not lost in the roadway because the right side remained intact.tailgate is no longer used to support any load due to fear of failure ,and remained upright and latched.no replacement part has been located.

I had loaded some lumber into the back of the truck and the tailgate cable snapped.it had rusted inside of the plastic barrier.the lumber slid out of the truck while traveling.no one was injured.i contacted gmc, and they said their was no recall on that problem.i will have to purchase another cable for the tailgate.

Automatic transmission/ overdrive malfunctioned, causing an abrupt forward jumpfrom 1st to 2nd gear which may cause a crash.please provide further information.

I purchased this truck in january 1998. 2 weeks later it was in the shop. This pattern continued each time. The complaint was concerningtransmission. But each time they would replace something else instead. The truck was in the shop for over50 days in a years time.on october 4, 1999 i was on my way to work when the truck going down the highway, jammed in 1st gear.the truck was towed. It took the dealer 10 days to make a decision on repairing the truck. They were well aware of this problem, and it is still a major hassle to get it repaired.contacted gm and had to have them intervene. Had they of fixed the truck the prior 5 times it was in for repair this wouldn't have happened.they continually denied problems existed with the transmission.this is a vortex truck i don't know if there are other existing problems with this year of truck and transmission problems.but i had problems within the first week after purchase and each and every time they would repair something else instead of fixing the transmission.the tranny was in pieces when it arrived to the dealer from the tow truck. They still did not want to take responsibility.they were trying to force me to pay a part of this repair.they were very ruid and incooperative about the whole deal. A total of 16 days they had the truck this time.in october of 98 they had the truck for 19 days and still could not find out what the problem was. Each time i would get the truck back they would show some repair for anything other than my complaints concerning the transmission. Each report reflected complaints about the truck no shifting into gear from 1st to 2nd.they gave me a blow off memo from gm. Stating the whnining noise from this transmission was normal. However, they failed to realize their memo relfected problems from park to gear and from n to reverse. My truck would fail to shift from 1st to 2nd and it would whine. And it would clunk and still they didn't fix it.

While driving about 20 mph consumer heard a noise and vehicle slowed down, transmission had gone out.consumer states while driving there was a nosie and vehicle would not shift into 2nd, 4th, or reverse and had no compression braking on a hill .

Transmission does not shift correctly, causing loud noise and possibly resulting in total failure. Dealer cannot fix defect.

While driving the vehicle experienced sudden acceleration at a high speed without prior warning which almost resulted in an accident. Was able to stop the vehicle with the brakes.also, dealer replaced the transmission.

Early transmission failure (code 1870).

Date is approximate, have since had problem with same model transmission on another 1997 truck.

There is a hard shift between 1 and 2 gears after driving several miles.

After driving for about 1 hour on the highway, we exited and came to a stoplight that is when the transmission started shifting hard from first to second gear. When i got home i went on-line and that is when i realized that i am not the only 1997 gmc sierra owner that has this very same problem, there are literally hundreds if not thousands of us out there with the exact problems with this vehicle. I would like to know if there is a recall being considered at this time?

After a long run the transmission shifts hard from 1st to 2nd,condition leads eventually to transmission failure.

Transmission failed.

Bumps into gear, engine check light, transmission overflow drips, power steering pump needs replacing

Trans started shifting very hard.once in high gear operated well. Dealer would not look at it under warranty even though1yr 10 mos. Old due to over 36000 miles by less than 2000.

No summary listed for above vehicle.

Transmission hard shifts from 1-2nd after driving for several miles.i can turn off the ignition and this will solve the problem for about 10 miles.then it will start shifting hard again.engine light is on.dealer couldn't diagnose the problem.

This truck has worn through 4 sets of front brake pads, including the set on the truck when we purchased it. The original pads were replaced at 8,000 miles.the second set replaced at 15,000 miles.the third set at 23,000 miles.this unacceptable for a vehicle that you've paid nearly $30,000 for!we want gmc forced to repurchase this vehicle.they obviously are unable to fix the problem, and i do not want a vehicle that i am required to replace the brake pads on every 6000 to 8000 miles.gmc has continously told us "to work with the dealer".that has done us no good at all.we want satisfaction from gm!!!

The front brake pads wear out within 12,000 miles on this type of vehicle. Have been told by dealer that these trucks have the same front rotor and calipers that are on the buick lesabra. This could explain the excessive wear of the pad due to the weight difference. The steering on this vehicle will lock up at slow speeds and allow the vehicle to wonder at higher speeds. Dealer has inspected front end and stated was within specs. Vehicle also will pull at times to left or right by self on straight highway.

My brake line failed above the fuel tank, lost pressure to the braking system which resulted in no brakes.why would car manufactures use steel brake lines that can rot out very quickly when exposed to normal driving elements.

The brake failure was at 55 mph.driver braked for slowing traffic ahead, all 4 wheels locked up, vehicle went into a ditch, and right front tire blew out.brakes still do not function properly and driver believes vehicle is unsafe to drive.

When braking, the brake pedal went go to the floor.please provide more information.

When applying the brakes during normal stoppingvehiclecontinued to roll while the brakes were applied.brakes had to be pump several times to get the vehicle to stop.vehicle has been to the dealer on four separate occasions, and they were unable to locate the problem.

When braking a little harder than normal brake pedal went completely to the floorboard, and there was no stopping ability, causing a rear crash.the vehicle is being repaired. Please provide any further information.

Anti-lock brake system fails repeatedly.upon applying brakes the brakes do not engage.the anti-lock system cycles repeatedly and unnecessarily, causing extended stopping distances.narrowly averted accidents a number of times.

Abs brakes would lock up when applied duringrainy weather or heavy dew on the ground. Brakes got worse. Took to dealer 5-6 times. Problem not duplicated.

Antilock brakes continually seize up and the vehicle continues to roll forward at slow rates of speed. Exact same problem we had with our 2002 chevy avalanche that was just fixed under recall12/05.

If vehicle is parked overnight in a rain storm the brakes do not respond in the morning, andvehicle willkeep rolling when brake pedal is applied. Dealer has been contacted.

We have had vehicle back to dealer numerous times with no results they tell us they can not find any thing wrong with the brakes.we told them that numerous times when you apply brakes over ruff surface vehicle brakes fail and do not stop. I have skidded through intersections hoping not to hit anyone and husband has had numerous close calls applying brakes and not being able to stop. Since we have owned vehicle in the last 2 1/2 years we have had to replace the brake pads twice. Once at 22,000 miles and at 70,000 miles. Both times were factory pads. We have also contacted gm they told us that they had not had any complaints against the brakes and in todayspaper 7/22/99 there has been a recall on 91 to 96vehicles will the 97 gmc pu's also be included in this recall? while i am complaining we also had to replace the rear end which blew up after owning it only 2 weeks the dealer replaced carrier bearings only and now it is making noises again. Also the transmission had to be replaced at 6000 because it went out, also last year we had to have the power steering pump replaced because it went out and the battery at the same time because when it left the manufacture some one bolted the battery down and put the screw right through the battery. Could you please let me know if the recall will include the 97's also. Thank you. Glendora wright.

Brakes experience intermittent failures, unable to identify problem.

Vehicle wears out brake pads because the caliper to knuckle clearance was insuffieicent.

Everytime the brakes are pressed a noise is heard and it continues to go for a distance even though the brakes are on.

Consumer has experienced many problems with brakes, a grinding noise was heard in the right front wheel and dealer replaced the brake shoe kit and stated that front brakes were doing all the work, 3 months later a whining noise was heard from the front of vehicle, dealer could not find any problems, in january of 2000 more front noise was heard and dealer installed cylinder, valve kit, drum assembly, spring kit, pin kit, and shoe kit, brakes also caused vehicle to pull to the left, 12-08-00, caliper kit and pad kit were installed and 7 days later all brake fluid was lost because of a faulty caliper kit, dealer replaced a seal which had cracked.

The consumer state's there is a leakage within the hydro- booster and the master cylinder which causes whiledriving at any speed and applying the brakes, the vehicle is pulling to the right. Ak

Brake system does not respond very quickly/fading. Mjs

Consumer states that the brakes pull to the right, dealer states the problem is the oversized tires causing the abs to react wrong, consumer thinks this is incorrect due to disconnection of the abs and the same problems existing, new hoses, calipers, pads, and rotors have been replaced.

While driving at any speed and without warning, the brake pedal would stall.then, seep to the floor.dealer replaced hubs on the front two brakes to remedy the problem.the left front door was inoperative from the inside.the right wheel cylinder was leaking.dealer replaced hub assembly.dealer removed and replaced the brake pads, also resurfaced rotors.*scc

After parking during my work shift, i attempted to leave work at 1530. Applying the brake to shift into "drive",the pedal went completely to the floor, and the abs light came on. I was unable to pump up the brake, and had to have the truck towed to a local dealer. It was determined the brake line had rotted out. The gas tank must be removed to effect repair. I had driven the truck from long island, ny to mays landing , nj (about 145 miles) without incident, but the dealer told me i could have lost braking power at any time.

The brake line hadrusted and leaked fluid.

Booster failed while traveling interstate. This was a class 9 systems failure (loss of power) without warning. Failure was a result of a split diaphram.

Brake line that runs along frame rail severely rusted and failed under braking, causing me to nearly rear end another car. I removed it from the truck and took it by the dealer and the service department said this is common for a vehicle with 78,000 miles to have this type of failure.

Dt:1997 gmc sierra c1500 pick up truck - the consumer complained about steering and brake problems. I bought a 1997 gmc sierra in 1999.the problem i'm having with it, and since i purchased the vehicle, is on occasion, when i make a turn, either to the right or left, the vehicle will lose steering completely.the power steering fluid level is fine.it only does this for a minute portion of a second, and then returns to normal.*la

While driving and when turning steering wheel jerks in the same direction.consumerhas the same problem with a gmc suburban.

Steering becomes irratic when turning. Vehicle suddenly oversteers then returns back to normal ,causing momentary loss of control. Dealer replaced (svs)sensor to correct problem.

While driving steering intermittently gets difficult and then gets easy again.

When driving at high speed, fron wheel steering front sensor malfunctioned, allowing wrong signals into steering. When going around a curb or corner the steering loosens up.

The steering system works intermittently causing the wheel to feel"loose" which may result inloss of control.

Front end steering problems, turns to far to each side.

Abs brakes/locked up intermittently, resulting in extended stopping distance. In addition, steering malfunctioned, causing loss of control.

When making a left or right turnsteering wheel jerks loose into the direction that the wheel is turned, but the vehicle itself does not respond to the jerk. If held in the turning position, wheel pulsates. The dealer has not been contacted.

Vehicle loses it's ability to turn to the left

I have been having a problem with the steering wheel jerking to the left or right when making a slight turn in either direction. It causes me to overcorrect my steering. It has gotten worse in the last year. When this happens, the steering gets very loose. I feel this is something that gm should correct, as mine is far from the only truck with this problem.

There was reduced steering, and steering wandered to one side. Happened at above 25 mph.contacted dealer, anddealerwas not willing to pay for repairs.technical service bulletin 86-32-06 was used by the dealer to fix. Can result in loss of control in steering.

When making turns, primarily right turns, steering will become very loose which could result in loss of control.

This steering sensor malfunction which has happened to me and at least two others that i know of causes the truck to jerk in the direction you are steering. This happens at various speeds. Very dangerous when driving on slippery roads. I'm sure you've had complaints about this problem, just wanted to add mine to the list.

When traveling at speeds greater than 30 miles an hour or so, the steering wheel occasionally loses all resistance and the wheel turns around to the right, causing the truck to swerve. I read that gm had issued a recall for many vehicles that had this problem, but the gmc 1500 truck did not appear to be among them. Please add it.*la

Poor steering causing loss of control.

The steering becomes quite loose and is difficult to keep on the road, mostly during cold weather.this could cause an accident on icy or snowy roads.

Steering becomes hard to turn, and then suddenlywill become light when turning left or right. This usually happens at highway speeds.

Vehicle is sitting and running. The steering is hard to turn. There is no noise whiletraveling.the dealership is aware ofproblem.

Consumer states when traveling upon making a left or a right hand turn consumer notice the steering wheel is loosecausing poor steering control, consumer also having problems with the transmission. Consumer has contacted the dealer. Please provide any further details.

Going down the road all at once you will loose control of your steering wheel. It is like you have no way to turn or anything.it will take a little bit for you to have control of you pickup again. This could be real dangerous if you were to hit some ice or rain slick roads and all at once you couldn't control your pickup. I was told that this has been a problem in these late model pickups and gm has made no recalls on this. It is 1996 threw 1999 that the trouble is in. There is a sensor in the power steering that tells it what to do.there was a lady in the same time i was in getting her pickup fixed on a recall on the wipers and i asked her if she had ever had any trouble like that.she said yes it caused her to go into the ditch before she knew what happened. She didn't know what was wrong. So they had to replace her sensor also. Something needs to be done before someone gets killed.

My truck was in fourteen months later for the same repair-i feel this is a safety issue- the dealership told me that they have replaced many of these sensors - i did not feel safe letting my wife drive my truck, especially at speeds over 45mph. No precise safety defect listed

While driving, intermittently steering wheel will have to much play in it and turn all the way around. This makes it difficult for the driver to steer vehicle, which could result in lost of control and cause an accident. Please provide more details.ts

When traveling at high rate of speed the steering wheel becomes very loose, causing the consumer to lose control of the vehicle for a short period. Consumer has contacted the dealer.

Power steering jerks as if hitting a patch of ice.

I have complained to gmc about my problem with the power steering and they gave me a file # c0344768. Basically, they didn't consider it a safety issue but i was concerned with my gear box freezing on me or something. I had replaced the pump once and all it took to ruin the pump again was a 500 mile trip. I know that things go wrong with vehicles but at 55,000 miles power steering should not be an issue. I am glad that it didn't cause any injuries. *aik

Steering wheel failure.steering wheel suddenly jerked either to the left or the right. When this occurred steering wheel felt like it wasseparating from its linkage. A mechanic determinedthat this happened becausepower steering booster was bad, and needed replacement.

When turning vehicle at speeds above about 35mph steering seems to resist turning and when more steering force is applied, steering becomes very light, causing vehicle to oversteer.problem seems to be worse when vehicle is cold. This is a dangerous situation if you are not accustomed or prepared for it.

Windshield wipers failed during rainstorm, after researching this,i found this to be a common problem in which a recall was issued but i never received notice or my vin wasn't included in recall

*la
