Recall 98 v 150 001/windshield wiper wiring:windshield wipers work intermittently. Dealer/mfr's have not been notified at this time. Consumer states the solid state electronic card failed when the vehicle was one year old, the wipers stayed off and would not restart until the solid state card was taped on.
Battery acidleaked on the brake line. The acid ate through the brake line, causing brake fluid leakage. Driver experienced complete brake failure when this happened. The vehicle was towed to the dealership. The brake lines were replaced under warranty.

Both high and low beam headlights failed to work while driving vehicle at night. Dealer found wiring burned up on dimmer switch in steering column. No fire occurred. Dealer charge to replace defective switch was $502.65. This is a safety problem when headlights fail while driving vehicle at night. Incident could have caused an accident or fire. Why didn't fuse or circuit breaker protect wiring? please contact us if you would like to examine the failed dimmer switch assembly. We have the failed switch which the dealer here in frankenmuth, michigan replaced.

Windshield wipers failed numerous times. I had to physically move the wipers to make them move again. Gm recall on this problem does not include my vehicle only because of vin #. I'm experiencing all the problems the recalled vehicles have./ on the second problem. I was having smoke coming out of my column due to the multi-function switch going bad. This switch controls the cruise control, turn signal, wipers, hazard lights etc. The turn signal relay kept going off , sounding like the hazards were on all the time. I notified the dealer and they confirmed other people were having similar problems with this type of vehicle.
Problem in fuel system(likely the fuel pump or related component)in 1996 gmc sierra with 6.5 l diesel. Causes engine to shut down completely. Tell me that this is a common problem with the vortex motor, when i tell the mechanic that my truck is leaking anti-freeze ,every mechanic has said that he knows just where it is leaking and they are right every time; is this a defect in this motor and what can i do about it? thanks r. Hello, purchased vehicle new 7/96, in 9/96 in conversation with a fleet mechanic since fuel pump is located in gas tank i was advised to not go below 3/4 tank of fuel to prevent fuel pump failuer any thing lower than 3/4 will not keep pump cool and lead to failure i followed the advise. Failure #1 occured in 1997 "original pump" dont remember exact date but dealer repaired.failure # 2 (of the pump that replaced the first one), occurd mar. Or may 1999 dealer replaced. Both failures resulted in total shut down. #1 occured while parked and#2 occured while driving in the city.related issue: in june 1999 fuel filter replaced after failure.in july 99 while driving in california at hi way speeds and heavy traffic truck would temporarily shut down (no fuel no power) 6 times in a 100 mile span, resembled fuel pump again however it no longer acted up after parking for 24hours. I am scheduled to take vehicle in for search of problem next week.excellent dealer service for repairs , and good truck, but am concearned with the fuel delivery system seems to be typical problem (fuel pump failure) with other gmc and chevy truck owners i was fortunate not to get into an accident but the potential is there, ie congested traffic etc.

While driving the vehicle, the engine died.when taken to the dealership we were told the fuel pump had burnt up and the wiring boot had also burnt up.the technician implied that we were lucky that there had not been a fire.this is the second time that a fuel pump has failed in three years.*la
As fuel pump began to fail (intermittent starting problems), it caused wires going to fuel pump (wires are inside the gas tank) to overheat.the fuel pump connector was completely melted, and three inches of insulation on each wire was burned off.bare wires could spark and ignite fuel vapors.

Since purchasing my truck, there has been an ongoing problem with it simply shutting down mid motion, causing brake and steering failure.three months after purchase this problem was directly responsible for an accident (on an icy roadway) in nh.i have taken the truck to countless garages in an attempt to remedy the problem, to no avail.i continue hearing from several mechanics; "fuel injection problem - a bad year for gmc ..."the problem was only occasional at the start, and tolerable, but has gotten progressively worse - to the point where i no longer am comfortable taking it out of the yard - yet i continue paying off a loan for a truck i cannot trust.again, i have dealt with three different garages (diesel), with competent mechanics, and after having various parts replaced - eventually find myself with the same problem occurring, again and again.

As i was entering florida i had just pased several cars and trucks at about 7 pm sunday night . I was relaxing and pulled my left foot back to the seat when i bumped the hood release with my foot.the hood imediatly opened all the way back to the wind shield.i immediatel started watching the road beside the truck, put on my turn signal .the man behind me saw what had happened and flashed his lights at me and slowed down the trafic behinde me so i could safely pull off the road. Luckily we were not hurt and the windshield did not get broken.i had a strap with me that i used to hold down the hood so we were able to proseed to our destination.i called the local gmc dealer to see if there was a recall on hood latch, and they said there was not.i went to the dealership to get an estimate.i then went to the chevy dealer to check on a new truck, and found that in 2000 they changed the hood latch to a stile that could not come all the way open the way mine did.the release lever is still in the same place and can be cought by your foot and cause the hood to unlatch, but with the new safety that is part of the hood latch it can not open all the way.i can not beleave that there has been noone else that has had this happen to them and that they would have changed the latch in 2000 unless they had problems.i did not trust the truck anymorethinking of how easily we could have been killed if the conditions had been diferent, so i traded it in on a 97 ford f150 before i left.i had called the gmc hotline and reported this to them. They said that they would put it in my records.i have contacted an atturney who said if i can find if more people have had this problem that he would consider a class action sute aginst gmc for this problem.it could have been eliminated by simply putting a shield over the inside release so your foot could not catch it. The tailgate latch will not unlock the tailgate.the windshield wipers will not work, or will only work on high speed. Will sometimes work if turned to high first then to low speed. While starting to move from a stop sign the drivers seat broke from the adjustment rails, allowing the seat to fall to the rear, resulting in not being able to control the vehicle.

While towing trailer with 2 quads (4 wheelers) on expressway with a group of co-workers, i was attempting to pass another vehicle when my truck would not shift into passing gear.it made a loud "reving" noise and began rapidly decreasing in speed.i pulled off the expressway bringing the vehicle to a complete stop.i then gradually accelerated and shifted manually, but was only able to acheive 1st gear.i had to have the vehicle towed 150 miles to my house where it still sits three months later with only reverse and 1st gear operable at this time.

When returning from a trip the transmission started to slip when engaging overdirve..over the next 150 to 200 miles it progressively got worse and now overdirve and 3rd gear are entirely gone and the engine just freely revs..only 1st and 2nd gear are usable.
Transmission will not go into reverse.the dealer and manufacturer will be notified.

Vehicle was parked on a hill and the key was removed, the vehicle was then placed into a gear while off without key and rolled down hill. It was stopped with the emergency brake and placed back into park, all this was done while the vehicle was shut off.gmc has been contacted.
Left rear axle seal failed to hold grease in axle, grease dripped all over left rear wheel & brake pads, potential for fire/brake failure, dealer replaced seal & brake pads, refilled axle with grease.

C1500 differential over heated & failed while towing a 5,000 lb rv.2nd differential failed after only 100 miles of replacing the 1st differential.

Automatic transmission is leaking fluid, dealer replaced clutch slave, cylinder assembly seal and found that the fluid was leaking at the shifter on top of the transmission, transmission mount is also weak which is causing problems shifting.nlm
Transmission mounting bolts became loose and worked their way out resulting in transmission shimmy and shaking as well as rattling.

The defective passenger'sseat belttightens too much;and when the seat is up the passenger seatbelt is not long enough to latch on.
Driver's side seat belt will not lock during panic stops.
The consumer was unable to install a child seat in the rear of the vehicle, due to the improper installation of the rear seat belt, which contained a twist.

This has been a major problem since day one. I have contacted nhtsa several times by e-mail and fax to frank borris to keep him up to date with my problem. There are 100's of thousands of trucks with unsafe seats-my fear is having my seat-or-wifes seat- breaking loose during a crash, and causing permanent disabilities. I certainly hope that nhtsa can get this problem solved-asap---thanks for listening.
Seat track spring defective.
I contacted nhtsa several years ago and i was informed that gm had a large problem with the seat rails in their various vehicles. I understand that nhtsa has many-many vehicles to inspect. I have been fighting my gm dealer for the last 4 years with various problems-broken interior dor handle-failure(s) with the fuel injectors-fuel pump failures-burned wiring harnass(where i had to show them where the wiring harness was located-trained techs??-alternator failure-ac compressor failure-atc... The biggest problem of course is the seat rails. They could have been redisned and the metal should have been heat treated, the seat rails have a poor quality metal-heat treatment would have splved their problem{s}. I have taught auto repair for 30+ years and i have never dealt with such a bunch of non-caring ass holes. Made in america-purhaps i should purchase something from japan-at least they treat their customers correctly-driving a vehicle with loose seats makes me feel like im driving a found on the road dead car-ford (pinto). . i hope that nhtsawill take action on gm and stick it to them. Right front bucket seat mounts loose, constantly makes noise when it is sat in, replace seat riser twice.
While backing the vehicle the seat cushion frame fractured at the left forward attach point. This caused the seat to rock and possibly could cause remaining three fasteners to become overloaded and fail. Failure of the primary structural seat attachment could cause serious injury during an accident. *nlm

I was out in the back country, 40 miles from paved roads, when i heard the rotors being torn up by what was left of the brake pads. It ruined both rotors. I was told at an independant shop that the calipers failed.i went to the dealer and the service advisor insisted that the calipers didn't fail . It was just cheap brake pads.i know for a fact that wasn't the case.

Dt*:the contact stated the abs activated at various low speeds and there were increased stopping distances.there is a nhtsa recall, # 05v379000, regarding the antilock brakes.the vehicle has the same problems as indicated in the recall; however it is not included in the recall due to the vin.although these problems persisted, the vehicle was not seen by a dealer.

My truck has experienced brake problems for some time and were attributed to various things over the past few years.since purchase my truck has been serviced by franks truck center 325 orient way lyndhurst, nj 07071 #201-939-7790.the pulling problem seemed to become apparent in feb. 1999.the problem i experienced was that when braking the truck pulled to the right--sometimes sharply, sometimes it was a "gentle" pull and many times the problem wasn't there at all.last february and at franks, the front rotor assemblies were replaced and an alignment done.the problem went away for about one week.the took the truck back for another try and it seemed good for another week or so and then the problem was back.they keep the truck for -5- days and did various thing to solve the problem ie: another alighnment, balance the tires, adjust the brakes.all attempts were obvious but the problem was back within a week or two.at this point and date, the truck is constantly pulling slightly to the front-right whenever i brake.on occassion it pulls sharply.i have notified franks.they have told me that there is a problem with the braking system on my truck and chevy suburbans (which have the same braking system).although my full warrantly expired aftermy february visit to franks, they have been attempting to resolve my problem.while this is appreciated, it doesn't solve what they have told me is an engineering problem.i bought my truck in order to tow a fifth wheel trailer (which i haven;t donemuch).at this point i am afraid to tow--and sometimes drive the vehicle for fear of the braking problem causeing an accident.

When applying brakes, they vibrate/ braking distance is extended. Dealer has turned, and then replaced front rotors every 5000 miles. Also, rear wheel cylinders were replaced due to fluidleak.

When stopped with light pressure on the brake pedal, it will bleed off down to the floor and is always spongy. Two dealers said there was nothing wrong, but beeing a mechanic for the federal governmenti can tell there is something wrong.

Brake system is defective. When brakes are needed suddenly the brake pedal would go the floor.at other times, when brake are used the brake would only brake on one wheel. My truck has experienced brake problems for some time and were attributed to various things over the past few years.since purchase my truck has been serviced by franks truck center 325 orient way lyndhurst, nj 07071 #201-939-7790.the pulling problem seemed to become apparent in feb. 1999.the problem i experienced was that when braking the truck pulled to the right--sometimes sharply, sometimes it was a "gentle" pull and many times the problem wasn't there at all.last february and at franks, the front rotor assemblies were replaced and an alignment done.the problem went away for about one week.the took the truck back for another try and it seemed good for another week or so and then the problem was back.they keep the truck for -5- days and did various thing to solve the problem ie: another alighnment, balance the tires, adjust the brakes.all attempts were obvious but the problem was back within a week or two.at this point and date, the truck is constantly pulling slightly to the front-right whenever i brake.on occassion it pulls sharply.i have notified franks.they have told me that there is a problem with the braking system on my truck and chevy suburbans (which have the same braking system).although my full warrantly expired aftermy february visit to franks, they have been attempting to resolve my problem.while this is appreciated, it doesn't solve what they have told me is an engineering problem.i bought my truck in order to tow a fifth wheel trailer (which i haven;t donemuch).at this point i am afraid to tow--and sometimes drive the vehicle for fear of the braking problem causeing an accident.

Severe surface corrosion on rear brake line led to line bursting during an emergency stop to avoid a collision. Burst occured at ninety degree bend in line by bracket leading to the flexible line to rear axle. Surface corrosion appears along brake lines at other places. I think it is unusual that the brake lines on a seven year old vehicle would exhibit such severe corrosion. Unless you were looking for this you would not normally see it since the line runs inside the frame rail.
Battery acidleaked on the brake line. The acid ate through the brake line, causing brake fluid leakage. Driver experienced complete brake failure when this happened. The vehicle was towed to the dealership. The brake lines were replaced under warranty.

On the evening of june 15,2004, my husband was driving our 1996 gmc sierra 2500 deisel pickup truck home. I'm experiencing all the problems the recalled vehicles have./ on the second problem. I was having smoke coming out of my column due to the multi-function switch going bad. This switch controls the cruise control, turn signal, wipers, hazard lights etc. The turn signal relay kept going off , sounding like the hazards were on all the time. I notified the dealer and they confirmed other people were having similar problems with this type of vehicle.

My problem exists (exactly) as described in your recall database, nhtsa campaign id number: 98v150001. I inspected the circuit card and found the cracked solder joints as you described. Gmc customer assistance advises that my vin is not covered by the recall. Perhaps there are more vehicles on the road with this dangerous problem than gmc admitted.

Recall 98v150000/001.windshield wipers do not work properly, motor on and will not work. Dealer states the circuit board is defective. Vehicle is not included in recall. Problem still exists. Provide further information.

Consumer states the solid state electronic card failed when the vehicle was one year old, the wipers stayed off and would not restart until the solid state card was taped on.
