Dear nhtsa,i was involved in a three car mva on 2 feb on i-95 southbound near mile marker 131.2.i was traveling in the slow lane during the evening traffic commute when my vehicle was struck from behind from an infinity suv which collided and impacted with the rear of my vehicle and pushed my vehicle gmc 2003 sierra ext cab into a late model ford fusion.the impact and force from the suv behind me caused rear and frontal damage to my vehicle and is est to cost over $8900.00 for repairs.my airbags did not deploy and after seeing the photos of my full size pick-up truck it seems that their must have been some sort of malfunction that the airbags did not deploy on impact.my whole front bumper is completely damaged and the frame holding the bumper in place appears to be bent.the rear bumper to is completely destroyed and pressed under the bed of the truck and their is extensive damage to the bed itself having been bent upward as if it looks like an upside down letter "v" and the right side of the bed also is flared outward where it absorbed the impact.the bed of the truck also impacted into the rightside of my cab and also left significant damage.the impact was so violent that the inside wire connection to the rear window defroster had actually separated from the window where it was spot soldered.i received severe whip lash, upper and lower muscle strain, 2 broken ribs and a severe head injury from my head striking the steering wheel.had the airbags deployed i strongly believe that the head injury or other injuries sustained would have been mitigated substantially.

The contact owns a 2003 gmc sierra 1500. While driving 40 mph, the contact's vehicle crashed into the passenger side of another vehicle. The air bags failed to deploy. The contact sustained injuries to the face, knee, and back that required medical attention. In addition, the passenger sustained hip and shoulder injuries that required medical attention. A police report was filed. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 177,000.

Non deployment of airbag in gmc sierra extended cab p/u truck 1500c series 2003 yr.

Dt*: the contact stated while accelerating from a stop sign at 3 mph, the vehicle collided with the front left door of another vehicle. The other vehicle ran the stop sign. Both the front air bags failed to deploy. The contact was wearing the seat belt, but fractured a bone in the neck and incurred bruising to the body. The contact was taken to the hospital and a police report was filed. The service dealer and manufacturer was notnotified.updated 10/31/2006 -

Speedometer does not work correctly, sometimes shows over 100 mph when the vehicle is stopped.

My 2003 gmc sierra 1500 speedometer doesn't work.it shows high speeds after the truck is shut off.it seems to work in warm weather but doesn't work in cold weather.not sure when the speedometer is accurate.

2003 gmc sierra truck, steering, has a clunking noise started about 5,000 miles, told by mechanic to take to a dealer, was not the first time he had heard of this problem and was not something he wanted to undertake due to liability, another problem with to much play or (slap) in the drive shaft, took it to dealer they replaced drive shaft, did not solve problem , so apparently they did not know how to solve problem and basically were grabbing at straws, i still have problem, front running lights keep burning out (electrical problem).

Speedometer and instrument cluster shut off onits own all guages and warning lights fail.

Started vehicle in morning and noticedno readings from any gages, (oil press., temp., tach., fuel, speed) nor could i read odometer.surrounding dash lights functional.while driving, i hit a bump in the road .... Everything began to work.at end of day leaving work, no problem ..... Stopped on way home, restarted, problem returned.turned steering wheel, problem gone.arrived home, turned vehicle off ..... Restart, problem back again.search on net says it is the instrument cluster.what is the cost for new/used cluster?is it easy to install?

While going down the road my speedometer was showing 120mph and i was only running 75mph. When i stop and shut off my vehical the speedometer reads 45mph instead of 0mph. If you switch the ignistion off and on several times it will eventually go back to 0mph. I was doing some research on it and found this web site www.topix.net. I found out pretty quick this is nothing new. There were so many listings on there for the same problem that it was unrealistic. I have always owned chrysler products unitll i purchased my gmc. I have done nothing but bragg about howw i don't never have problems with this truck but now seeing all of these complaints for the same thing i kinda feel like an idiot. This is a very big safety issue exspecially when traveling the interstates. This could cause some prety serious wrecks when your showing your running 100mph and only doing 60mph. Thats asking for a major rear end collision. If any one is listening and is conserned about the consumers safety then something needs to be done pretty quick. I have read where consumers have spent thousands of dollars to make this repair. With as many complaints i have read there should be something done pretty quick before someone gets injured or even killed. So if any one cares do something about it.

Speedometer sticking and going crazy ,cluster lighting in/out then gauges stopped working then whole cluster shorted and had dash fire.

Vehicle repeatedly goes into "reduced engine power" without warning.very dangerous when you are on the highway and suddenly lose power.has been happening infrequently for the last two years.now happens almost daily.

The speedometer, the heat gauge, and my battery gauge are all pegged and do not work at all on my 2003 gmc sierra 1500 with 50k miles...i've read numerous message boards and i am not the only one...there are thousands of people who have the same problem with their gmc's...

2003 gmc sierra with several problems. Consumer states that the transmission failed.passenger side window motor broke, speedometer failed due to stepper motor failure, truck is on the third set of front brake rotors, and upper support column bearings, and more problems.the consumer stated the dealer refused to replace the upper support bearing, but replaced the intermediate shaft instead. The rear planatery forward clutch was burnt, which caused the transmission to fail.

Speedometer on 2003 gmc sie failed constantly and when it works, it works very erratically, tested actual speed on police radar and speed was never consistent and sometimes out by 15km/h. More often than not it does not work at all.

The speedometer stopped working in my 2003 gmc sierra, it just stopped one day going down the road, hasn't been fixed i think gm should something about i'm not the only on that has the problem.

Intermittent and erratic speedometer problem.speedometer will sometimes appear to register correctly, other times will be inoperative, and at other times will register the wrong speed.this has been especially dangerous at night when it is difficult to use exterior visual cues of actual speed to know that the speedometer is giving the wrong information.this has led to several near accidents due to inaccurate knowledge of speed when approaching intersections and curves.

Out of the blue, the speedometer on our 2003 gmc sierra started acting erratically.at rest, it reads ~50 mph, and over 120 mph when driving.

Odometer failure. Began showing erratic, incorrect speeds, starting around 80,000 miles. At +/-85,000 miles the odometer is stuck at 120mph and completely inoperative.

Speedometer in my 2003 gmc sierra suddenly quit working.

Upon purchasing the vehicle i noticed prior to purchase that the fuel gauge did not read accuratly. The dealership agreed to reimburse me for the cost of the fix. After a day or two durring a short in town drive i noticed my speedometer was acting "jerky". I arrived at my destination, but when i left the speedometer was reading 60mph at a stop. At what i estimated to be 65mph the speedometer read 120mph. Gm has been aware of this wide spread problem for almost a year but they refuse to issue a recall on a obviously flawed product.

Erratic speedometer.

The speedometer on my 2003 gmc sierra sle is faulty. It began at approximately 37,000 miles and reads between 20-60 mph higher than my actual speed. The problem was initially isolated to the speedometer, but now my tachometer is now reading 800-2000 rpm higher than actual and the amp meter has also started to reading high. I contacted a local gmc dealership and got an estimate of around $600 dollars to fix the problem. The technician i spoke to at the gmc dealership informed me that there have been many similar complaints from gmc owners but no recall has been initiated. I did some research online and found discussion forums where many other gmc owners are experiencing the same problems. I believe this to be a safety issue that needs to be addressed and gmc confronted with a solution.

2003 gmc sierra 1500 speedometer failed -- drifted fully upscale.no precursor - was driving steady at 45 mph.93000 miles on vehicle.first time failure - but it is a hard failure - reading >120 mph with car shutoff in driveway.i adjusted my speed down to be below what i hoped would meet the speed limit.it appears gmc has issued service notices on this ... I found the following on the internet:subject:bulletin gmp07-174 - special coverage adjustment #07187 --- some customers of 2003-2004 model year cadillac escalade, escalade esv, and escalade ext; chevrolet avalanche, silverado, suburban, and tahoe; and gmc sierra, envoy, yukon, and yukon xl vehicles have reported that the instrument panel (ip) cluster gauges stick, flutter, or become inoperative. This may cause inaccurate readings, including the speedometer and fuel gauge.

Speedometer has failed and the truck is out of warranty.however, i see that this is a very big problem in these vehicles and general motors is aware of it.

Received letter from gmc about cluster panel gauges sticking or fluttering. I did nothave any problems at that time and mileage was over the 70,000 stated in letter. Later the oil gauge started fluttering and battery gauge registers battery as dead. Contacted gmc on 1/17/08, was told the instrument panel had be diagnosed by certified gmc service personal. I was given a reference number to use when contacting gmc. I had hpr automotive in sulllivan,il. Diagnose the panel.-cost $85. Diagnosis was cluster panel defective. Gmc contacted hpr to verify panel was defective. The cost would be $600 plus for the repair. After several conversations with two gmc service representatives .i was told on 2/29/08 by a third representative that gmc would not cover the panel replacement. I have read several forums on the defective cluster panel. Most state gmc refused the repairs, others state dealership where vehicle was purchased did repair for no cost even though the mileage was over 70,000. I feel that gmc should be held accountable for the defective part no matter what the mileage is, since they state in writing they know the part is defective, thanks m.g.

The contact owns a 2003 gmc sierra 1500.while driving approximately 60 mph, the speedometer and oil gauges stopped reading oil pressure, speed, and temperature gaugethe vehicle was taken to a mechanic and the sensor was replaced; however, this did not correct the failure.the vehicle was taken to a dealer and they stated that the repair would be expensive.as a result, the contact did not have the repair performed.the contact received a recall notice in august of 2007, but the vehicle exceeded the mileage requirement.the recall number was unavailable.the current mileage was 76,000 and failure mileage was 45,000. Drove 2003 gmc sierra pickup to mountains, stayed 5 days. Got in truck to come home and speedometer was erratic at times and didn't move at all at other times.have not had it repaired. Problem 3 mounths old.

Speedometer was working fine and then just completely stopped working. Checked on recalls to see if this was another defect but saw that there is a lawsuit going on with several people with the same complaint. Have not corrected the problem.

My speedo was acting erratically and finally has stop working at all. It happened out of nowhere and i am hearing alot of complaints from friends and the company i work for who has several of these vehicles they are all going bad. My vehicle is 03 gmc sierra and most the others i know of are similar trucks and suvs. I have been pulled over for speeding twice now but have never been pulled over for speeding until my speedo quit working. I would like to see a recall i here this is a expensive problem to fix .

Was driving on express way and speedometer went to zero while i was traveling approximately 65 mph.have not taken in yet, will this week to the local dealer.over past 2 days since incident occurred, has happened numerous times at various speed levels.

The contact owns a 2003 gmc sierra 1500.the contact stated that the speedometer stopped working.he took the vehicle to the dealer and was informed that he was no longer eligible to receive a free repair.the qualifications for the free repair were seven years or 70,000 miles.the contact stated that he was never notified and, when he brought his vehicle in for repair, it was too late.the manufacturer stated that they would not cover the repair, even though the vehicle is only five years old.the contact stated that he had been to the dealer about the failure before the vehicle exceeded the mileage, but the failure had not been diagnosed until february 11, 2008.the vin was invalid.the current and failure mileages were 110,000.

My speedometer on my 2003 gmc speedometer has not worked properly for over a year. I now have 75,000 miles on my truck and gmc says it will not cover the expense of repairing it. This is an extremely dangerous situation that is occurring across the country and general motors is screwing its loyal customers. After numerous calls to customer service i was told that the company extended its warranty to seven years or 70000 miles in sept. And all gm owners were notified. I then asked them when they mailed my notification because i have not received a letter from gm notifying me of the extended coverage as of nov. 8 2007. They were not able to tell me when they mailed a notification to me. My point is that if the company had notified me in sept. I would not be over the 70000 limit and would not have to pay for the repairs. I find it extremely hard to believe that a corporation as large os gm does not keep records of when they notify customers about potentially dangerous components on their vehicles. It appears as though gm is trying to get by with out having to pay for their mistakes. I have searched the internet and found many lawsuits over this matter and i fully intend to pursue my legal rights as well.

The contact owns a 2003 gmc sierra 1500.while driving 65 mph, the speedometer failed and the needle became stuck on 40 mph.the fuel gauge needle also failed.as of october 31, 2007, the dealer had not inspected the vehicle.the contact felt that the instrument panel cluster caused the failure.the powertrain was unknown.the failure mileage was 68,000 and current mileage was 74,700.

Instrument cluster failure.

Dt*: the contact stated the vehicles speedometer began to stick and did not show the accurate speed traveled.the other gauges worked as normal.the vehicle had not been to a service dealer to address the issue.

Speedometer on my 03 gmc sierra truck stops working then works erratically, shows im going 120 when only traveling at 35 or so. I have been reading post on forum sites and seems to be a chronic problem from gm.

The contact owns a 2003 gmc sierra 1500.on september 27, 2005, the speedometer began displaying inaccurate readings.the speedometer sporadically failed for the next couple of years.on october 5, 2007, the speedometer displayed an inaccurate speed of 125 mph.the contact received a notice regarding a voluntary recall for the speedometer.only vehicles less than six years old or with fewer than 70,000 miles would receive a free remedy.the contact's mileage was 115,000; therefore, he was ineligible for the free remedy.no repairs were made.the contact filed a complaint with the manufacturer.the purchase date, recall number, and speed were unknown.the failure mileage was 64,999 and current mileage was 115,000. Updated 3/25/08

Speedometer does not work.

The contact owns a 2003 gmc sierra 1500. The contact stated that while operating the vehicle, the instrument panel would not function properly. The contact indicated that the fuel gauge and speedometer were both inoperable. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who diagnosed that the instrument panel was faulty and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 135,000.

My speedometer sticks, flutters, or dosen't work at all. I have taken my truck into the dealer multiple times over a two year period and was told they could not pin point the problem. I was recently told that there are multiple complaints about this problem and there is a defective part in gm vehicles.this is a saftey hazard and there should be a recall for this and it should be fixed at no charge to me.

1 driving on highway at limit2 speedometer jumps up to 1003 speedometer at 30 when stopped, still not working.

My 2003 gmc sierra pick-up has erratic speedometer reading.speedometer reads various speeds while vehicle is at a stop.impossible to determine actual speed due to this problem.gm issued a service bulletin and offered free replacement to all effected vehicles.no notice was sent to owners.when i found out about the service bulletin, it was too late.there was a time restriction on it.apparently my speedometer lasted a bit longer than many.however my problem is exactly the one referenced in the bulletin.i think gm should pay for the repair.the local dealer said it would cost me $470.00.i've owned many vehicles, and never once has a speedometer failed due to "normal wear and tear."

The instrument cluster on a 2003 gmc sierra 1500 pickup truck fails unexpectedly.there are problems with the stepper motors and the manufacturer knows about it.certainly, one has to know the speed they are traveling, especially in school and construction zones.mark these words "someone is going to get killed"there are several complaints filed with the manufacturer and you and yet noting is done to correct the problem. Is it going to have to take a fatality before a recall is issued.no wonder the car companies are in so much trouble!!!

I was driving along and all of a sudden the truck sorta hesitated and lost all engine power at which point i noticed the reduced engine power warning came on and i tried accelerating to try and maybe travel along to pull over at a safe place and come to find i could not accelerate at all, i had to coast to the side onto the grass alongside the road but my fear is that i live close to orlando, fl and travel there at times luckily this has not occurred while there as there are 3-4 lane highways potentially putting me & others in a fatal position if i am caught in a center lane but i try to avoid this for the most part, i either travel on the far left or far right giving me access to the emergency shoulder if needed, but not sure what to do in regards to this problem as i bought this vehicle used and not sure how to go about checking if this is a safety recall issue or not as i am not able to afford a problem like this right now financially...and this has occurred like after i bought the vehicle like in three months following the purchase and continued like every other week for like three months straight it has now cut down to like once every three months or so, the latest occurring nov 21, 2014.

The contact owns a 2003 gmc sierra. The contact stated that while driving 65 mph, a fire erupted from the undercarriage area. The local fire department was called to extinguish the fire. The vehicle was then towed to the contact's residence and had not been repaired or diagnosed to determine the cause of the fire. The manufacturer was not made aware of the incident. The approximate failure mileage was 150,000.

My 2003 gmc sierra 1500 presently has 67,631 miles on it.with about 46,000 miles on my truck at the end of 2011, i noticed low coolant, but could not find a noticeable leak.i continued to add coolant, but could never find the leak. While having my oil changed in june 2016, the dealer (where vehiclehad been purchased and serviced) said coolant had leaked into the oil due to a cracked cylinder head, and estimated approx $3500 to fix it.in dec 2016, they recommended replacing the engine at $6600.in researching this problem, i found gm service bulletin #06-06-01-019b, 12 june 2007, subject information on gradual coolant loss over time with no evidence of leak found. It discusses a known manufacturing defect with castech heads used in the 5.3l vortec engine as i have in my truck.subsequent online searches indicated this was a common problem among such gm engines.i went back to the dealer with the service bulletin and asked what gm would do to assist in the repair of this known manufacturing defect.the dealer said the vehicle wasn't under warranty so they wouldn't do help.i requested assistance through the gm regional rep, and was also told they would do nothing.in march 2017, i wrote a letter to gm customer assistance center requesting assistance. Gm responded with a letter two weeks later stating that for service request number 8-2815264552, they "cannot provide any cost assistance on the engine issue on the vehicle."further they stated there is no recall or special coverage for the issue.the faulty casting of the castech cylinder head in the 5.3l vortec engine is a known defect in about 5 years of gm vehicles which gm refuses to acknowledge to customers, but clearly acknowledges through its service bulletin.gm should provide a recall or at least financial assistance to correct this known defect.

The contact owns a 2003 gmc sierra 1500.the headlights dim and the engine shuts off when the contact depresses the brake pedal.the steering wheel does not move and the contact was almost involved in a crash.the dealer could not determine the cause of the failure.the manufacturer would not assist the dealer in locating the failure.the current and failure mileages were 80,845.updated 4/2/08 the consumer stated when the engine shuts off and vehicle is still, the steering wheel becomes inoperable. Updated 04/02/08

I was on my way home from work and i smelled a weird smell.i thought my air conditioning may be messing up so i turned off my air and opened my window.i still smelled the weird smell with the window down so i assumed it was an odor from the car in front or just generally outside.i noticed in my rearview mirror the car behind me was flagging me down.i pulled over and she told me my truck was smoking and she thought she saw a flame out the back.i pulled off the road better and got out to look.i looked in the area between the cab and the bed and i saw flames.within a few seconds the flames got bigger and flared up over the bed of the truck.a passing motorist stopped and had a cooler of water and poured it on the area and put the fire out.i had called 911 and the fire truck arrived after the fire was put out.the police did not accompany the fire truck.an insurance adjustor has not been to the mechanic to look at the truck yet so i do not know the extent of the damage.

The contact owns a 2003 gmc sierra 1500. When the vehicle was started, exhaust fumes entered the vehicle. There were no warning indicators illuminated. The vehicle was taken to john paul's buick gmc (3615 s 108th st, greenfield, wi 53228 (414) 482-6246) where it was diagnosed that there was a fractured exhaust manifold gasket. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer stated that they could not assist the contact because there was no recall issued for the vehicle. The failure mileage was 80,000. .consumer stated wife smelled exhaust fumes, consumer cannot smell and was getting headaches after driving. Problem is from the exhaust fumes. Updated 8/15/18

While having my vehicle check over for the winter, the mechanic inform me that the front brake lines are very rusty as well as the fuel lines and the cooling lines going to the transmission. This situation is very disturbing since i have very low mileage. The tubing used for the brake as well as the fuel lines should be able to withstand rusting for the life of the vehicle. If the material used by gm was not up to specification as far as corrosion protection either compensation to repair it is in order a recall should be made.

Fuel line corrosion resulting in multiple leaks in pressurized fuel line.fuel dripped continuously onto the transmission, including some electrical connections, as well as onto the exhaust system, clearly representing a fire hazard.when problem first started, gasoline vapor was noticeable in the cabin.2003 gmc sierra 2wd ext cabfuel line assembly was replace by local mechanic ~$640 parts and labor.

Check engine light investigated, and cause found to be loss of fuel tank pressure due to rotted out fuel filler neck.original part made of non-corrosion resistant steel.other corrosion problems with this vehicle have involved brake lines.the first line was replaced in 2007, when the vehicle was only 4 years old.a more extensive replacement of corroded lines was done in 2008 or 2009.these are serious safety and emissions related problems, and these vehicles should be recalled as a result of them.owners who have paid for repairs in the past should be compensated by a reasonable amount.

A brake line burst underneath the truck when i applied the brakes with substantial pressure (not enough to engage abs on the dry pavement). Was able to swerve to avoid vehicle that cut us off and use emergency brake to slow/stop vehicle in a safe place. All brake lines were severely rusted/corroded and needed to be replaced. Fuel lines were replaced as well at the same time, due to severe corrosion.

Brake line failure complete loss of brakes while driving on hwy off ramp.

I was driving home from work on i-75 and started detecting a strong smell of gasoline.i pulled over and inspected the vehicle.i found that the fuel line had rusted and was spraying gas everywhere.upon further inspection, i found that all the lines for the fuel and brake system were severely rusted and will need to be replaced to avoid catastrophic failure that could result in serious injuries to myself and others on the highway.i have researched and found that there have been thousands of complaints filed, but no action taken.as an added note...i bought the truck new, it is kept in the garage most of the time, and i do not live in a state that is known for heavy snow fall or salt usage.i also have a 1965 model car that has never had the fuel lines or brake lines replaced.

2003 gmc sierra 1500 pu truck - corroded and failing hydraulic brake lines.this truck was purchased new by me in october 2003, and now has only 23,700 miles on it.a line near the fuel tank, which feeds the rear wheel calipers, rusted through in january 2009.other lines in numerous locations also show signs of corrosion which will lead to future failures.mechanics in this area tell me this is very common, even on some newer gmc (and similar chevrolet) vehicles.some of these mechanics replace the faulty lines with tubing which is more corrosion-resistant than provided by the manufacturer.a couple of weeks ago, one of the rear, rear wheel emergency brake cables on this vehicle also failed due to corrosion, and the other one showed signs of the same failure impending.both were replaced.a serious, fundamental and compound hazard exists under this scenario.the manufacturer should be required to recall thee vehicles and replace all critical brake components subject to corrosive failures with corrosion-proof (or at least highly corrosion-resistant) parts.

Starting at <5k miles the vehicle power train clunked when shifting from 2nd to 3rd gear.now at 70k miles it clunks when shifting between all gears except final drive.the dealership replaced the output shaft on the tranny, then the u-joints, and modified the electrical shift patern.it still clunks. Power steering intermittently locks up at slow speed turns, especially when braking.light bulbs burn out almost every three months.had to pay ($486.00) for replacing the intake manifold gasket when vehicle had little over 40k miles. Brakes fade and the pedal almost goes to the floor, again intermittent.i have almost caused several accidents due to the steering and brake issues. Gmc issued a letter stating "this is a normal occurance and will not cause damage."well, it's getting worse in sound and clunking harder during shifting.

The contact owns a 2003 gmc sierra 1500.while driving at an unknown speed, the contact crashed into a tree.the vehicle was completely destroyed and none of the air bags deployed.the seat belt system also failed to properly secure her in the vehicle.the impact ejected her from the vehicle.the contact sustained major injuries, such as a punctured kidney and lungs, broken ribs, multiple contusions to the head, a broken left hand, and a broken right finger.a police report was filed.she is in the process of filing arbitration against the manufacturer.the vin and powertrain were unknown.the failure and current mileages were 45,000.

The contact owns a 2003 gmc sierra 1500. While driving approximately 40 mph, the brake pedal was depressed and traveled to the floorboard. The contact noticed brake fluid leaking from the vehicle. In addition, the rear seat belt latch failed to function. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the brake line needed to be repaired. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 144,917.

The brake lines ruptured and all breaking power stopped.i nearly slid into the intersecting street with traffic coming.the roads were icy/snowy, but no storm was occurring on this night.the temp. Outside was around 0 degrees in nh.i had it repaired and the technician noticed the entire rear brake lines were extremely rusted out and the spot just under the driver side door was the first part to rupture.

Pedal went to the floor on exit ramp. No warning. Truck went off road to avoid cars stopped at ramp end.

My son was driving my gmc pickup ( always dealer maintained ) to a friends house. While driving in traffic, he went to apply the brakes and the peddle went to the floor. He was not injured but it was a very scary situation. When looking into the problem, i find the brake lines rusted through. I also have found that gm is aware of this problem and has done nothing to correct a very serious problem. Thank god my son was not injured. I hope other people who allow their children to drive will be as lucky.

Attempted to stop at red light.brake pedal went to floor.swerved to not rear-end car in front.ran red light because unable to stop. Pulled into residential side street and slammed into park.brakes would not stop the truck.not towing any load.no load in truck bed.upon investigation after stopping, brake fluid spraying out left rear brake line near axle when pedal depressed.

I was on my way home running 45 mph in light traffic. When i went to make a left hand turn and my brake pedal went to the floor. Scared the hell out of me. I was able to pump them enough to make the turn and luckily i was only three blocks from my home. I was able to coast it home. I raised the hood and all the brake lines are so rusty. I had my wife step on the brake and you can see one line busted. I checked with dealer and they don't offer replacement parts. You have pay someone to make the lines for you.

The contact owns a 2003 gmc sierra 1500. While driving at 65 mph, the brake pedal was depressed but the vehicle failed to stop. The contact had to engage the emergency brake in order to stop the vehicle. In addition, the contact stated that brake failure was displayed across the message board and a chime was heard. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic. The mechanic diagnosed that the brake lines were corroded and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 112,000. ..updated 05-26-15the consumer stated both brake lines failed. Updated 11/20/2015

After starting the truck, i stepped on the brake pedal to shift out of park. Upon pressing the brake pedal, my foot went to the floor and a loud pop/snap noise was heard. The rear steel brake line had corroded and burst. After being towed to the mechanic and being inspected, i was told that all steel brake lines were corroded and had to be replaced. The mechanic also noted the extremely high failure rate of the brake lines in full size gm vehicles from that time period. This is the second gm truck i have owned that a brake line failure has occurred; experiencing the same failure with my 1992 chevrolet silverado.

Hydraulic brake lines corroded causing leaks and brake failure

Applied brakes when a deer ran in front of the truck. Steel brake line feeding the left front brake ruptured as a result of corrosion just above the fitting where the steel line connects to the brake hose. Pedal immediately went to the floor, both braking circuits failed. Had to use the emergency/parking brake to bring the truck to a stop. Vehicle is not a southern vehicle - was in vermont from purchase in early 2003 until moving to virginia in august of 2013.

On 8/9/15 at approximately 3:25pm an individual pull out in front of me. When i applied the brakes to keep from hitting him, the brake pedal went all the way to the floor board. I noticed at the time the "service brake system" indication was showing on the driver cid. I was able to drive the truck to a safe location and park it. I looked under the vehicle and noticed brake fluid on the ground under the right front wheel. The tow truck driver also checked and noticed brake fluid shooting up when the hood was up. At that time, he noticed the right front brake line had rusted through. The truck was then towed to cunningham gmc in springfield, tn.

During major snow fall after new year 2014, upon arriving home from work, with my wife and another passenger, i attempted to stop and my brake pedal sunk to the floor, nothing, no brakes. I nearly drove through garage door. I had to cut the wheel and punch the gas to perform a "half doughnut" to avoid hitting my house. Had there not been signifigant snow on the ground, this maneuver would have been impossible. The following day while navigating vehicle into garage, we had an incident , causing minor damage to truck & garage. Upon inspection, i discovered the steel brake lines were extremely fragile do to rust. 2 lines from proportioning valve to abs unit, & 2 lines from abs unit to front wheels deteriorated under body near chasis. One of the lines from prop valve to abs failed, leaking brake fluid. I went to abeloff gmc where i was informed only lines from prop valve to abs where available. I purchased and changed them. However, as i suspected the front lines would leak due to the fact they would be disturbed while changing prop v. To abs lines. They failed before i got the truck out of the garage, causing a minor accident in garage . I then found a company online, classic tube, which provided me with a kit containing all brake lines made from stainless steel. So, not only could we have quite possibly been killed, but i now have [2] extra brake lines that cost me $125.00 that i don't need. Gm could at least had the decency to make all the lines availeable. I also discovered that this problem is not uncommon. Had these brakes failed a few minutes earlier, say on rte 80 w in pa, it could have been tragic for me, my wife ,my passenger, and anyone in the way!

I was leaving my driveway when i applied the brakes there was nothing... No brakes at all, peddle went to the floor. I managed to steer the vehicle away from on coming traffic, narrowly avoiding a serious or possible fatal accident. After inspecting the vehicle i was astonished to see that one of the brake lines was completely rotted out.this vehicle has 78000 mi. And is garage kept. From what i have read this is not a freak occurrence many other gm owners have complained of similar problems. The issue here is complete failure of the brake system. I though modern brake systems are designed to eliminate a complete failure? this is an extremely dangerous condition. Shouldn't the system work in a way that partial brake function remains possible with the loss of a brake line. I thought the system is partitioned to prevent this from occurring. If the current safety standard is to prevent this from happening, clearly the standardhas not been meet!gm needs to correct this problem. At the very least why isn't gm required to use a higher quality brake line to avoid this dangerous condition!!!!!

Truck was being driven in traffic and as approaching stop light and brakes were applied petal went all the way to floor and had to swerve to miss stopped traffic. Upon inspection brake line on drivers front side of truck and laying on top of the frame was rusted almost completely in half! quick thinking avoided accident .this truck has only been driven on city streets and never off road four wheeling and feel this is manufacturing defect as stainless steels lines should not rust in half if in fact they are stainless steel to begin with.truck is at gmc now to be repaired.

While driving approximately 35 mph in town, the vehicle in front of me signaled to make a left hand turn.i began to slow down the vehicle and then i lost all brake pressure. I was unable to stop the truck to avoid an accident due to complete brake failure! there were no previous lights or warning signals notifying of a brake problem prior to this.the warning light came on after the accident.the brake fluid reservoir was full.after further investigation, it appears that the brake lines were corroded causing the brake failure.

The contact owns a 2003 gmc sierra 1500. The contact stated that while driving 30 mph, the vehicle failed to respond to deceleration attempts and that the brake warning light illuminated. The contact inspected the brakes and noticed that the failure was due to corrosion. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the problem. The approximate failure mileage was 150,000. Updated 8/19/14

82k miles, original owner, well maintained and garaged. Had to stop at a red light and the pedal went to the floor as i went into the intersection.luckily no other cars were ahead of me and nobody was hurt. Dic lights came on and brakes have not worked since limping my vehicle back home.

Brake line failure.

The contact owns a 2003 gmc sierra 1500. The contact stated that while driving approximately 30 mph, the brake pedal was depressed and there was no response. In addition, the brake pedal traveled to the floor upon engaging. The vehicle accelerated through an intersection after repeatedly applying the brake pedal. The emergency brake was engaged in order for the vehicle to stop. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic who stated the brake lines were completely corroded. The vehicle was in the process of being repaired. There was an investigation associated with nhtsa action number pe10010 (service brakes, hydraulic: power assist: hydraulic: hoses, lines/piping, and fittings). The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 155,000. The vin was not available.

I was backing up a trailer with my 2003 gmc sierra and tried to stop when the brake pedal went to the floor and did not stop. Checked out the brakes and found that the brake lines are rusted bad and one had failed. I found out this is a common problem with this truck for that time period. Reading about other complaints and there are a lot of them . This is not normal and very dangerous and there needs to be a recall for these vehicles. This is a safety issue and warrants a recall to replace these brake lines. This is a serious issue! there are no warnings, and most owners of these vehicles, like myself are not aware of this problem. It makes me sick to know that gm is aware ofthe poor choice of materials they used to make these brake lines and by doing so putting our love ones in danger and put money first.

Entered 1st lane of traffic , accelerated and entered second lane. At that time traffic slowed abruptly. Applied pressure to brake, brake pedal went to the floor--pumped brake, total failure causing me to hit vehicle in front of me. Applied emergency brake to stop vehicle, however tractor trailer was behind honking horn , came within inches of hitting me. With emergency brake applied, forced truck to breakdown lane. Luckily no injuries--just car damage including a new front bumper that had just been replaced due to chronic gm rusting. Tow truck arrived--driver notices severe brake fluid drainage on ground and on truck bed when raised up. Truck brought to repair shop, where mechanic reported all brake lines burst due to severe corrosion. Mechanic stated--no wonder you didn't have any brakes because all lines failed--not surprised due to gmc having brake line issues. Needless to say--traumatic experience that could have been a lot worse under different traffic conditions. Think about child running across road--tractor trailer not being able to stop in time....higher speed on the highway-- think about it--i certainly am!!!

Dear sirs;we own a 2003 gmc sierra 1500 extra cab truck. It was purchased in june of 2003. It has just over 100,000 miles on it.it has been maintained throughout and garaged. On sunday, august 26, 2012, our son was driving the truck in our neighborhood and the brakes failed without warning. (this vehicle is primarily driven by my husband to work and back daily. No indicator light ever came on.)there were children playing in the street. After avoiding a ball that had rolled down a driveway and into the street, he pressed on the brake and the pedal went to the floor.he then pressed on the emergency brake, the emergency brake did not stop the truck. On his third attempt was able to steer to the curb and throw the truck into park to stop.thankfully, there were no kids in his path. He would not have been able to stop and his life would be altered forever. Not to mention our lives and that of an innocent bystander/ child.looking online to see if there have been problems reported, we found the nhtsa has an investigation on this gmc trucks and suv?s.the brakes on this truck were done between 70,000 and 80,000. All pads were replaced, 2 new rotors and 2 rotors were cut. No mention of brake line deterioration, corrosion, or visible problems were brought to our attention at that time.this vehicle is used mainly by my husband who drives it 6 miles one way to work daily. No problems, squeaking, or pedal changes had been noted.we were all really quite shaken by this incident. We had it towed to a dealership for repair. It went there during the labor day holiday thus delaying the repair. We were informed that the brake lines had rotted out.any information or direction will be greatly appreciated.

The contact owns a 2003 gmc sierra 1500. The contact observed an abnormal sound from the rear brakes without warning. The contact took the vehicle to the local dealer (betten baker gmc located at 749 w mainst, lowell, mi, 49331) where it was diagnosed that the rear brakes had failed. The vehicle was repaired. Two weeks later, the contact observed a puddle under the front driver door and realized it was brake fluid. In addition, the contact observed that the paint on the frame was failing and was wet due to the excessive leakage of the brake fluid. The contact researched online to see the complaints on his vehicle and found a closed investigation due to brake line corrosion under nhtsa action number: ea11001 (brakes). The vehicle was not diagnosed again. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 117,000.

I put my truck in reverse to back out of the shop and my brake pedal went to the floor. I quickly threw it in park an turned the truck off. I then pushed the brake pedal again and it again went to the floor and i heard brake fluid squirting out. I put the truck on the lift and raised it up to inspect the issue. After doing so i found very rusted brake lines and components. After research i found this to be a very common issue with these trucks. Seems maybe gm should be fixing the issue. I wouldn't think a truck less than 10 years old should have such rusted brake parts. Especially since the exhaust is made from stainless, why not brake lines?

76000 miles; issue ongoing beginning in november 2018on dry pavement at low speed (under 10 mph) braking is compromised by abs system engagement issue.below 10 mph, the abs system engages causing dry pavement braking to be double or triple the normal distance to stop prior to the abs issue. This is a safety issue since abs system pulsing of the brakes at slow speeds on dry pavement is unexpected.at a stop sign/crosswalk, this has caused a very close encounter.vehicle has less than 80000 miles and has been serviced routinely by a certified mechanic. Replacement/service of abs speed sensors and rust issue did not correct the problem. I have never been contacted regarding the recall that exists for this issue. Require assistance to determine why a vehicle with this mileage has this obvious safety issue and gm has provided no relief.

My truck hadn't been driven for a couple of weeks, but there was no indication of anything amiss the last time i drove it. The truck is parked at the top of a approx. 40ft. Long driveway that is moderately steep. I started the truck and slowly began backing down the driveway and the brake pedal went all the way to the floor. It flew down the driveway, going between a parked car and another steep hill, winding up in my neighbors front yard, where i managed to abruptly turn it and bring it to a stop before going thru his living room. Frequently, there are as many as 6to8 kids playing there, but being a bad weather day(cold),, luckily, there was nobody there. The possibilities of a terrible disaster are frightening. As it stands, the only 'disasters' are the ruts in my neighbors yard, a destroyed recycling container and my bank account,-to a tune of just over 1700$.my mechanic says he has done over a half dozen of these repairs lately.to my way of thinking, gm is seriously negligent regarding this problem, which i have discovered is fairly common. Arethey waiting to see how many horrific events occur before addressing this? at the very least, they should give reimbursement to those of us that have gone thru this. And where is nhtsa's action on this issue???

A vehicle pulled out in front of my son last night on his way to a boy scout meeting. The speed limit was 45. My son hit the brakes which locked up then let loose. Pedal went to the floor . He avoided hitting the car that pulled out on him and when i arrived found that the metal brake line running along the frame had ruptured as it bent to go across the frame behind the cab.this truck has only 70,000 miles on it and this is a premature failure due to premature rust. I own and 1971 dodge dart and a 1978 pontiac firebird with original metal brake lines on both with no rust on lines at all and i live in ohio and they are driven in the winter.i feel fortunate my son and no one else was injured due to the catastrophic failure of the gm metal brake line. Hope others will be just as fortunate.toyota was forced into a recall of there truck line due to premature rusting problems and gm should be made to follow suite. These vehicles are accidents waiting to happen.i also own a 1994 gmc c2500suburban that has no visible rust on the brake lines either with 170,000 miles that i have owned for 15 years. . the 2003 gmc chassis is truly sub standard to say the least.please look into these issues i have read the forums out there and i know i am not alone.thanks.

Backing up toward 60 ft dropoff to unload debris.when i hit the brakes the pedal went to the floor.stopped with e-brake or i would have been down that 60 ft drop.checked under truck and fluid was running out a break in the line from rusting through in the middle of the line, not at a fitting.was very lucky that i stopped in time.that would have left a mark!

When attempting to use brakes at highway speeds (70-75 mph), pedal went immediately to floor with very little effort. Pedal had held firm moments before. No reduction in speed from pumping pedal. No warning of malfunction until danger was imminent. A certain crash was avoided if evasive driving was not implemented with a combination of shifting to neutral, kicking on the emergency brake, and shifting to the berm. Stopping distance estimated to be at least a half mile to 3/4.vehicle suffered minor front end damage from using the berm to avoid other vehicles. Upon further investigation, a hard steel rear brake line above frame had fully rusted through. It had come apart with a large window, rather than a small perforation which would have allowed some brake modulation.

You must take action on the gm brake lines in the early 2000 trucks.the corrosion is not normal compared to other vehicles.either the metal is thinner or there is something in the metallurgy allowing increase corrosion.with the worst winter in recent memory, these brake lines were subjected to more salt than ever.i realize that there are two sets of brake lines and if one of them fails the vehicle still may stop albeit at an increase distance.while this may be fine for a small car.the vehicles we are dealing with are large vehicles.the brake lines are subjected to the most pressure when the beds are loaded and/or pulling a trailer.that also is the worst time for the brake lines to fail.these vehicles are also the least maneuverable in case evasive action needs to be taken.are we just waiting for a few deaths first??

Complete brake failure. All brake lines rusted out. Had to use the emergency brake to stop. Brake pedal went all the way to the floor. All the brake fluid was gone. Spent $1008 to fix the vehicle. No previous warning, no message until there was the complete brake failure.

Loss of brakes due to rusted through brake lines. While pulling a trailer with pontoon boat, all of a sudden when stopping i suddenly had no brakes. Just came off the freeway but was going slow when the failure occurred. Need to replace now.also, rusted through power steering lines. Already replaced.also, rusted trans cooler lines. Will need to replace soon.

Started my vehicle applied the brake to shift to drive and the brake pedal went to the floor. I got out of the vehicle and there was a puddle of brake fluid on the ground on the driver side under where the drivers seat is. There was brake fluid dripping from a rusted brake line. I'm lucky this happened when the vehicle was stopped and not while i needed stop because it was a complete loss of brakes.

Pulling to a stop in my driveway my brakes slowed the truck and then completely gave way with the pedal hitting the floor.i stomped on the emergency brake pedal to keep from hitting the porch. I am so lucky to have that happen at low speed off the road.that could have been a tragedy on the highway.turns out that my brake lines are severely rusted and one of the 2 lines coming off the master cylinder now has a pinhole leak immediately above the frame where it bends 90 degrees to go back to the abs manifold.applying the brakes just squirts fluid out of the line.i thought a single failure was supposed to result in reduced braking power, not complete loss of brakes.note that my truck is in otherwise great shape and i simply had no idea.it is clear that the nhtsa has been bamboozled by gm.brake lines are a critical life safety system, installed on and in some places in the chassis before the vehicle body and bed are attached.it is not routine maintenance to rinse the brake lines let alone replace them.gm pushing this back on the customer is complete bs.you can buy nylon coated or stainless steel brake lines for less than 100 $.the incremental cost to go from steel to something that would last the operational life of the vehicle is less than 50 $.i'm waiting on an estimate from my non-dealer shop, but a dealer charging 3600 $ is not surprising considering the amount of labor that must be involved.the nhtsa decision on the issue is unconscionable.guess it might have been different if they had run over a child at a crosswalk or if their child was mowed down by corporate greed.hopefully that never happens, but with so many rotting gm trucks on the road, we will have to keep our fingers crossed.

I was pulling up to a busy intersection i went to step on the brakes they were gone. Lucky i was able to jump the curb and come to a stop, before hitting any one. Upon inspection the brakes lines were rusted through!!!!!!! note!!! i had my truck in for a oil change and 27 point inspection the day before. At the dealer.

Turning into an auto parts store, from the highway, when i applied the brakes the pedal went clear to the floor. My truck slowed but not enough if anyone walking or a car had been there i would have hit them.i was very lucky. Of the four brake lines one burst, two were seeping, but not dripping and the rear line was almost as bad as the other lines and its a wonder it didn't break at the same time.going home i would have gone down a very steep hill with a stoplight and a very busy intersection.it could have been a disaster. This is a low mileage truck, seldom driven in snow.

On may 20, 2012 when moving my gmc 1500 pick up truck from my driveway at low speed i stepped on the brake only to have the pedalgo all the way to the floor.this is the second time this occurred in about six months.on or about october 21, 2011 i also lost my brakes when parking the truck at a local strip mall.the required repair was for a corroded brake line.thank god that both times i was traveling slowly.at highway speed i could easily have be killed.please check this out!!

The abs activates at low speed braking under dry road conditions without the tires locking up. The brake pedal vibrates as if i were on ice with the tires locked up.braking effect is reduced under these conditions. This happens randomly and when it does i cannot be sure if i can stop in time before hitting the vehicle or object in front of me.

I was towing my 33' travel trailer with my very well maintained 2003 gmc sierra 1500 pick up truck. After a four and a half hour trip on the interstate highway doing 65 mph, i arrived at my campground. As i was backing my trailer into my camp site, my brake pedal went to the floor and my dashboard lit up with warning lights. I had complete brake failure. I put the truck in park and got out to look under the truck. Right below the driver seat, brake fluid was pouring out of the brake line which had burst open. I had no brakes. Thank god this happened while i was backing the trailer in at 2 mph. Minutes prior to this i was going 65 mph on the highway, towing a 33' trailer. I shutter to think what could have happened if this line burst while at highway speeds. My wife and i were freaked out for days thinking about what could have happened. We had to have the truck towed to a repair shop and endure a very expensive replacement of all the brake lines, which were completely corroded. While the truck was being fixed i did some research on this problem and found that there were many, many, complaints about this exact same problem concerning 1999 - 2003 gmc and chevy pick up trucks and other models. Gm claims that you would still have some brakes because there are separate brake lines to the front and rear brakes. This is true, but i lost so much fluid, so fast, i had no brakes. Does someone always have to die before they force a recall? there are so many complaints on this matter and i know there is an on going investigation by the nhtsa. Enough investigating, force the recall before someone dies if they haven't already.

Brakes failed while on boat ramp causing boat to knock me down under trailer as i was pulling drain plug .driver was able to apply parking brake and putting truck in drive . Brake lines failed brake petal when to floor rusted lines . Then found out that is very common with gm trucks in this year . Result i am pissed , a notice from gm would have been nice . What would happen if i had to stop at a intersection or on the interstate.

Driving down middlebelt road coming up to a red light i hit the brakes and the brake pedal went to floor, truck finally came to stop, looked under hood and could see brake fluid leaking out of right front brake line.

My wife was parking and brake pedal went to floor.

While slowing down for a light on a 4 lane highway my brake lines burst in two places failed from being weaken by rust....i had no chance to stop or advert the car and crashed into and totaled a new buick.....the driver was taken to the hospital...the front of my truck need repair....gm made the lines out of steel even thought the exhaust system and fuel line were made out of rust resistant material ( go figure)....i have my truck serviced at the local gm dealers and they never mentioned the potential hazard....when searching the internet i found that many other owners had the same experience.....i had also been on the local and national news yet gm but they never advise me of this condition, and i'm the original owner....under different circumstances it could of been much worse...my insurance went up 1000.00 and the agent said the break lines on her gm truck had just burst and crashed in a ditch...people are driving their cars longer and theres going to be a bad accident...i see on the net your department has been investigating it for several years, yet no action....you could at the very least advise owners of the danger....i filed a claim with gm for help in this matter and was denied because i already had the brake lined repaired....

Was traveling at 50 mph when brakes were applied and brake pedal went all the way to the floor, unable to slow vehicle with pumping brakes. Parking brake was applied with no success, ultimately slowed down with putting truck in low gear and costing to a stop. Was informed by dealer of rusted and blown brake lines.

Slowing for turn brake line rupture due to heavy rust. Complete repair needed for lines from master cyl. To wheels.$400.00 repair cost. Very scary situation.from what i have read gm says it will stop. It did,but they omitted how [xxx]far it takes.thank youinformation redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

The contact owns a 2003 gmc sierra 1500. The contact stated that while he approached a stop with the brake pedal depressed, the brake failed to engage and caused the contact to drive through the intersection. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who inspected and advised that the brake lines were corroded. The vehicle was repaired and the brake lines were replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure.the failure mileage was 113,635 and the current mileage was 115,599.

Our truck was at collision shop for a repair from a hit and run in a lowe's parking lot..when they finished, they took the truck out of the garage to take for a car wash.when pulling out of their business the truck would not stop.they pushed it back into the parking lot and restarted and tested the brakes. There were no brakes.they looked under the truck and saw the brake fluid flowing out on the ground.we had the truck towed to our mechanic and one of the lines was broke.he replaced it ($298.00).he told us the other lines were also in bad shape.we became aware that gm had a problem after seeing a television news story.we took copies of this story to our local gmc dealer, the collision shop and our mechanic. Our gmc dealer said they knew nothing about this problem.on september 25, 2013 we had the remainder of the lines replaced.($984.80).we have since encountered two additional people who have had the same problem.this truck was purchased in michigan, but we spend out winters in florida, so it has limited exposure to salt used during the winter.what scares us about this is:on the day before we took the truck to the collision shop, we were going to drive 45 miles to ann arbor, mi for a birthday party.we decided at the last minute not to go.if we had gone that day, this would have happened to us traveling on the expressway at 70 mph!this is a scary thing.to quote the news story:"gm, in a statement to 7 action news states this is 'not a safety issue' as thebrakes still operate with a broken brake line and admit that rusty brake lines are a problem that 'can happen over time', presumably from liquid salt used incold weather states. Gm has a solution.the company is offering what they call a deeply discounted brake repair kit that runs $2-thousand dollars for only $500".gm needs to step up to the plate and let owners know.

While backing in my driveway sloped downhill, applied brake peddle to slow before stopping. Brake peddle went to the floor. Luckily i had mind enough to apply the emergency brake to come to a stop before running through my garage. Upon inspection, i noticed fluid running off the frame rail onto driveway. I noticed brake lines in frame rail were corroded bad. Called dealer, they say they replace brake lines all the time in these vehicles. They wanted $1100. A local garage replaced all the lines for $800. I am the original owner and take good care of vehicle.is this a class problem? should this be covered under a recall? happy to supply vin if needed, just don't have it with me.

The contact owns a 2003 gmc sierra 1500. While driving approximately 15 mph in a parking lot, the contact slammed on the brake pedal to avoid another vehicle that abruptly pulled in front of his vehicle. The brake pedal traveled to the floor without stopping the vehicle immediately. There were no warning indicators illuminated. The dealer was not called; however, the contact spoke to a technician who stated that he could repair the failure by cutting out the rotted section of the brake line and replacing it with a new section. The failure was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and did not assist. The failure mileage was 127,600. The vin was not available.

While driving to the store i applied the brake and it went straight to floor without any pre-warning of a brake issue.i was able to stop without crashing and found that the brake line routed over the gas tank rusted through spilling out brake fluid which caused the brake reservoir to empty.after doing some research nhtsa is well aware of the rusted brake lines on gm models, so i am not telling you anything new.i expect alternators, starter motors, and other mechanical components to fail and need replaced but brake lines should be manufactured using stainless steel.how can this be any different than a car ignition turning off causing potential crashes and loss of life.nhtsa should have gm recall vehicles and/or reimburse owners for this highly potential safety issue.

Brake line failure complete loss of brakes while driving on hwy off ramp.

Brake line corrosion caused rear drivers side steel line to burst and lose most of the truck's braking ability.luckily i was driving slowly at the time. In addition to the line that rusted through, all lines will need replacing after further inspection.

I went to put it in dr and the brake pedal went to the floor the metal line blue . They had to replace the caliper too. It cost me $475.89 to get it fix. Not happy. I had chevy with 200,000 miles on it and never replace any brake parts. I under stand this a bad parts on the 1999 to 2003 models[xxx]information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

Brake lines rusting out. Vehicle not drivable.

Premature failure of brake lines due to accelerated corrosion.all metallic portions of brake lines exhibiting severe corrosion along total length and loss of thickness to the point of failure.have inspected 6 other trucks of same year and model and all exhibited similar degree of corrosion.it is obvious that brake line material of construction is deficient.

Total brake failure on a 2003 gmc sierra pickup truck 62,000 miles.

The contact owns a 2003 gmc sierra 1500. The contact stated that while stopped, the brake pedal was abnormally depressed to the floorboard. The contact was able to safely drive the vehicle home and park. Upon examining the vehicle, the contact noticed that the brakes lines were fractured and corroded. The vehicle was not taken to have the failure diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 80,000.

The braking system failed when the pedal went to the floor. Investigation revealed that the steel brake line had rusted and ruptured. The only precursor to this was noise from the abs unit at low speed. It appears that all of the brake lines are badly corroded and will need to be replaced.

This truck and i reside in wisconsin but were in florida at the time of the incident.my travel on 2/21 was to pick up my young granddaughter at her school.i was traveling at around 40 mph in fairly heavy afternoon traffic, i had crossed a controlled intersection about a mile from the school and applied the brakes to slow down, the pedal went to the floor. I pumped the brakes and was able to slow the truck down. I proceeded to the school at a very reduced speed using the parking brake and pumping the brakes. I was able to safely get to the school. I exited the school yard and parked the truck. Called a tow truck for the rest of the trip.the mechanic that repaired the brake lines said there has been a partial recall on gmc and chevrolet trucks for faulty brake lines but my truck was not included. He said the worst rust was at the abs control but there were other area's involved also. This vehicle is only 9 years old. I have owned vehicles much older than this one and have never had a brake line rust through. I urge you to do a deeper study and recall if necessary, into what appears to be the use of inferior brake lines and/ or poor placement of the abs control on a wider range of this vehicle.it was fortunate that this incident did not cause an accident or injury or take place as we were returning home through the mountains in tennessee a few weeks later.i again urge you to extend the recall further into this trucks production.thank you for your attention to this dangerous and extremely unsafe condition.

Purchased 2003 gmc sierra 1500 used from private party on sept 10, 2010 and upon nys safety inspection all steel brake lines were discovered to be completely rotted out.cost to repair exceeded $700.00.

Low speed crash in driveway due to sudden rupture of rt. Front brake line metal section at banjo bolt. After inspection of the truck by a mechanic i was informed that 4 other steel lines are leaking due to severe corrosion and that every steel line on the truck is in danger of failure due to severe corrosion. Estimate to repair is near $1000.00 body damage from crash is around $900.00.

Brakes failed because of corroded brake lines that failed on the way to work .it was fixed, and another broke when being tested! because of this were afraid to drive vehicle until recall is in effect !

Corroded brake lines on 2003 gm sierra 1500 long box pickup truck.first failure was in january 2009.second failure in february 2010.when truck was inspected in nov. 2009, inspector indicated that gm truck brake lines are a known safety hazard.he looked over mine, but did see evidence of need for immediate repair.truck was bought new in oct. 2003 by me, and now has only 24,500 original miles on it.gm should most definitely be required to recall these vehicles and replace all corrosion-prone brake lines with corrosion-proof ones.there is no greater safety concern than braking.i am taking truck to have all lines replaced at my expense, in the interest of my and others' safety.but, gm should not be allowed to foist junk with massive safety consequences upon consumers and get to walk away from it.the potential here makes the toyota gas pedal problem seem like a trivial joke!

Brakes blew out coming down a very steep hill. I was lucky because i had a toyota in font of me slowing down because of a squirrel crossing the street. I had also slowed down but then the toyota stoppedand i went to stop my brake lines both front and back blew out and my pedal went to the floor and i had no brakes at all. Thanks to the toyota being there to stop me other wise i would had a very bad crash into crossing traffic or head on into a guard rail or trees. I had to pay for all new brakelines installed on my truck and the damage to the toyota and my truck costing around 2000.00 dollars plus the insurance over 2300.00 for the toyota and my front end. Now im afraid to drive my truck.

I entered my vehicle to drive home and realized that i had no brakes.after looking underneath i realized that my brake lines were rotted and leaking.one line is currently leaking but they are all in very bad condition.i was left with no option but to have the vehicle towed home.i am going to have to replace all the brake lines as even the ones that aren't currently leaking are in very poor condition.it would be unsafe to drive the vehicle without replacing them.i am very fortunate that the failure didn't occur while i was driving at a high speed.when i parked the vehicle the brakes were fine and when i came out 20 minutes later i had absolutely no brakes.

While driving home from work, i tried to stop at a stop light. Pushed the brake pedal and it went to the floor. Got it stopped by using the parking brake. Service brake light on.after parking the truck, noticed liquid on driveway. Traced the liquid back to a rusted brake line.

I own a 2003 gmc sierra 1500 hd.this past winter i almost hit a snow plow due to a brake line rupture.upon inspection it was found that all the brake lines were severely rusted and very brittle.i had the one line replace which cost me nearly $300.no this past week another rupture almost caused me to rear end another vehicle.this time i'm going to have to replace every line in the braking system.also the abs system kicks in when traveling at slower speeds (5-10 mph).the cause of this is unknown to me at this time.upon doing a little research online i find that there are thousands of people with the same model and nearly the same year vehicles, having exactly the same problems. Then i find on your site where you have started an investigation into the problem. Nhtsa action number:pe10010this truck has been very well taken care of and there is no excuse for these lines to be faulty in only 6-7 years time. It's likely to cost me nearly a $1,000 to have all of these lines changed.my question is if the nhtsa finds gm responsible for these faulty lines and they issue a recall, will i be reimbursed for having already paid for the repair?

The contact owns a 2003 gmc sierra 1500.while driving 25 mph, the contact applied pressure to the brakes when the pedal was depressed into the floorboard and the vehicle did not stop.he activated the emergency brake and was able to idle the vehicle.the dealer advised the contact to bring the vehicle in for diagnostic testing.the manufacturer was made aware of the failure but did not offer any assistance since the vehicle was no longer under warranty.the vehicle was taken to a private mechanic who informed the contact that the brake lines were rusted and needed to be replaced.the contact was awaiting repairs.the current and the failure mileages were 40,000.

Luckily there was no accident as i have been teaching my 16 year old daughter to drive. The brakes felt spongy and not as responsive as normal on my way home from work. When i stopped in my driveway, i looked under the vehicle and brake fluid was pouring out of an apparently ruptured line to the back brakes. There was no warning light on. Regardless of the miles, this truck is barely 8 years old.a quick internet search shows that this model year and nearby years of the same type of truck have experienced this problem. Had this been on a highway trip with all fluid draining out, there certainly would have been an accident.

Lost approximately 80% of braking power in a 2003 gmc sierra 1500 with 60,000 miles.small leak developed in the metal brake lines.there was no sensor indication that fluid was low despite brake fluid being one quart low.

Regarding nhtsa investigation pe10010. I have a 2003 gmc sierra and the steel brake lines are corroded beyond recognition. A recall to replace these lines needs to be instituted.

Had dealership replace driver side front wheel bearing because it was making a grinding noise.a couple months later the front brake pads and rotors were replaced.after the brakes were serviced, i started noticing that the brakes were pulsating, which was felt in the pedal, at low speeds.took vehicle to the dealership and they said during the test drive that the abs system was activating unnecessarily.they then put it on the diagnostic machine for some reasons.i was told i needed to replace both wheel abs sensors.the dealership said that the abs has nothing to do with the brake pads and rotors.when the pads and rotors were replaced, again the vehicle was put on the diagnostic machine, but didn't pick up that the sensors were firing.i'm doubting it is coincidence that these things are happening at random.there has to be some kind of correlation between the wheel bearing being replaced, the pads and rotors being replaced, and now the sensors needing to be replaced.my vehicle is a 2003 gmc sierra and has 47000 miles on it.all this happened within the last 6 months and 1500 miles.

I took my 2003 gmc sierra in for an inspection, inspection failed due to corroded brake lines.was informed that all brake lines need to be replaced.is this normal?i live in the north..there seems to be a lot of rust/corrosion on the underside of my truck as well as starting around the body..am facing spending $400-$600 to replace the lines..looking for info regarding this type of problem..

On september 29, 2010, i was driving my truck on rt. 66 west approaching linden va. At approximately 65 mph when traffic began to stop abruptly because of roadwork. I was in the left lane and applied my brakes. At this time my brake pedal went to the floor. I had begun my stop far enough away from traffic ahead of me that i was able to slow down without hitting anyone in front of me. I moved my truck over to the right shoulder, then onto the ramp for the linden va. Exit and then parked on the shoulder there. When i got out of the truck i found a puddle of brake fluid quickly forming under my truck, below the left frame rail behind the left front wheel. When i looked up to see where the fluid was coming from, i found the leak coming from a bundle orfour brake lines, that were heavily corroded, that ran beside the frame rail. At this time i made arrangements to have the truck towed to my residence. At the time i was towing a single axle utility trailer. The truck has not yet been repaired. This truck is a 2003 gmc sierra 1500 hd crew cab short bed, 8600 gvw. It is nearly identical in equipment to a 2500 hdcrew cab short bed. I purchased this vehicle new.

Main brake line blew while my wife was backing up in a parking lot, the only way to stop was to put the car in park while moving. We had it towed to our local mechanic who had to replace every brake line.the truck only has 68k miles on it. The mechanic said they were very bad and we were lucky to be safe. I cannot believe this issue has not been addressed and recalled by gmc. Our bill was an unexpected $1,300. I'm expecting a call back from a district gmc contact monday about the issue. I'm fighting to be reimbursed as this is a known deadly issue and needs to be recalled. How have they not been sued from this problem yet?

A brake line burst underneath the truck when i applied the brakes with substantial pressure (not enough to engage abs on the dry pavement). Was able to swerve to avoid vehicle that cut us off and use emergency brake to slow/stop vehicle in a safe place. All brake lines were severely rusted/corroded and needed to be replaced. Fuel lines were replaced as well at the same time, due to severe corrosion.

2003 gmc half ton sierra truck.3 time since 2003 that i've had to take it in for clunking noise felt thru steering wheel.lubed a couple times then replaced the intermediate steering shaft.still no guarantees that it won't happen again.also very hard to steer when braking and brakes don't respond well when applied quickly.the first time the intermediate steering shaft needed attention the truck only had 15,000 miles on it.the second time was 30,000 miles and the last time was 45,000 miles and occurred in march 2010.

2003 gmc truck failed safety inspection dew to extremely rusted brake lines.

When attempting to stop truck, brake pedal faded to floor. Upon inspection, the brake lines exhibited severe corrosion and rusted thru allowing fluid to leak out. The truck has less than 90,000 miles.

Traveling to work and vehicle cut out infront of my truck. Applied brakes to avoid collision and heard pop and brake pedal went to floor. Upon arriving at work a few moments later found rear brake line corroded and perforation went through causing leak. Replaced the rear brake line to correct but brakes still inop. Old piece of corroded line is available.

I previously had to have the power steering cooler replaced because of leaking corroded lines. Just recently had to have trans cooler replaced because of leaking corroded lines. Mechanic said all lines underneath (brake, steering, etc) are terribly corroded and we will definitely pay attention to all corroded lines, etc in future oil change visits. The undercarriage of my truck is a corroded disaster. The rocker panels are gone. Corroded railer hitch was replaced. Luckily nothing has totally failed yet to cause an accident.

Clunking noise and vibration in steering column at low speeds on bumpy roads, especially when turning corners. Feels like serious front-end mechanical problems. Current mileageon my 2003 gmc sierra is 60,000.i learned from gm that the intermediate steering shaft had already been replaced at 24,000 miles under warranty, but it needed replacing again. $207 for new shaft and $92 labor. New, improved part # is 19153614. If gm knew the original shaft was defective, why didn't they have to recall it?

I have a 2003 gmc sierra 1500. When turning at low speed at times the power steering goes out for a few seconds then comes back. Yesterday i almost hit a car head on due to this problem. I was turning into a gas station and the steering went out. A car was pulling out of the station as i was pulling in and the power steering went out. I was going straight at and i struggled through it to make the truck turn. If my wife would have been driving the truck, there would have been an accident. This needs to be recalled and fixed before someone gets killed. This has been going on for the last 6 months but yesterday was a close call.

2003 gmc sierra 1500 truck. Consumer states problems with rust and rot *tgwthe consumer stated the dealer rectified the rust problems.

The contact owns a 2003 gmc sierra 1500. The vehicle was taken to a state inspection station where the contact was informed by the technician that the brake lines exhibited severe rust. The dealer was notified of the failure but because the vehicle was outside of warranty, the vehicle was not repaired. In addition, the contact stated that the main frame also exhibited rust and corrosion. The contact was in the process of taking the vehicle to an independent mechanic for repair. The vin was unavailable. The failure mileage was 72,000.

Loud noises from left rear wheel, like a loose part, then a grinding sound. Suspect it was not fixed in recall.

Speedometer acts all erratic, sometimes will show i am going 30 mph more then i really am, may sometimes show the needle being buried and not going over 20 mph actually, sometimes doesn't register at all, needle is jumpy, and at other times it will go back to normal for a few days without any incidents.this all started happening once my vehicle hit 51k miles.the dealership stated it may be the instrument cluster and could cost upwards of $1300 to replace.

Over one year ago i noticedthespeedometer making noise and giving erratic readings. About 6 months ago it went out completely with the needle past the 120 mph mark. This is a safety hazard.gmc has been notified with no results.

The contact owns 2003 gmc sierra. The contact stated thatwhile driving, a burning odor emitted and the heater blower motor failed. The dealer informed the contact that the vehicle was not included in the manufacturer's heater special coverage adjustment. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 134,000 and the current mileage was 136,000.

The contact owns a 2003 gmc sierra 1500.the contact heard a grinding noise coming from the front driver side of the vehicle.the noise was heard when the vehicle was shut off.he also felt a vibration coming from the abs unit.the dealer has not inspected the vehicle to determine the cause of failure.the contact stated that he was unable to deactivate the windshield wipers.the dealer stated that the wiper pulse module should be replaced.the dealer made the replacement and no other failures have occurred.the current mileage is 34,025 and failure mileage was 33,000.

Windsheild wipers won't turn off...possible wiper pulse module.
