The contact owns a 2002 gmc sierra 1500. While driving 55 mph, the contact's son crashed into the rear of the preceding vehicle. The air bags failed to deploy. The driver sustained a concussion, a neck injury, nose bruising, and back injuries due to the seat belt tightening. Medical attention was received. A police report was filed. The vehicle was towed to a towing company. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and no repairs were made to the vehicle. The failure mileage was 200,000.

This vehicle was involved in a single vehicle accident hitting a gaurdrail and concrete divider. The 2002 gmc sierra1 1500 ext. Cab truck has been totaled by the insurance company. There was extensive damage to the front end, hood, side panel, bed, and bumper, driver side tire, etc. The air bag failed to deploy. It also appearedthe seat belt jammed upon impact as opposed to locking as it is supposed to. Even though the injurieswere not severe, she hit her head on the steering wheel, and had sustained problems from the excessive impact among other things. Someone should check into why the air bag did not deploy as well as the seat belt.

We were traveling west bound on george bush turnpike in plano, texas at the n central expressway exit a vehicle traveling in the lane to our right came into my lane cutting me off and i swerved to miss said vehicle and corrected to the left and corrected back to the right to miss a vehicle coming up on my left. It had been raining and the roads were slick, we went into a skid and into a concert barrier traveling around 60 to 65 miles an hour. No other vehicle was involved. Myself and my passenger were both injured. We received substantial seatbelt trauma to our upper torso and myself as the drive sustained a broken knee cap and my passenger received deep bruising to her upper torso and shoulder and deep bruise and tissue trauma to her knee.

The contact owns a 2002 gmc sierra 1500. While driving approximately 65 mph,the contact crashed into a concrete wall head first. The air bags did not deploy. The contact sustained injuries to the ribs, shoulder and right knee. The passenger sustained injuries to the right knee and lacerations to the neck from the seat belt. The contact and the passenger were transported to the hospital via ambulance. The police reported to the scene and a report was filed. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The manufacturer had the vehicle inspected by an engineer. The contact stated the manufacturer did not explain the cause of the air bag failure. The vehicle was destroyed and not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 103,000.

While driving down the highway in the far right lane. Going about 60 miles a hour we hit a patch of black ice.the vehicle started to fishtail. The driver kept the vehicle from spinning out and doing a 360. We crossed over 3 lanes of traffic, without hitting another vehicle. When the truck finally griped on to the road we had no way of avoiding the center median, a concret wall divider. Upon impact neither the driverside or the passengerside airbags deployed. We hit the wall at a 70 degree angle so it was pretty much head on. Why didn't the airbags deploy??????? from reading other posts on other sites it sounds like this happens a lot. Why isn't there a recall. Apparently there is something wrong and it's unsafe. ## vin passed ## gmc, sierra, 1500, 2002 ##

Daytime running lights constantly burning out.bulb holder gets melted.90% of chevrolet and gmc truck and blazer have this problem.

The 2002 was in need of front hubs since they were not replaced when they should have been at the time the front differential was rebuilt.this caused the truck to have excessive front wheel friction, and compromised the braking characteristics of the truck.it was difficult to drive, especially in snow, and the front wheel friction would vary based on changes in speed, road contour, temperature, steering input, throttle input, and brake input.while braking the truck would often pitch severely to one side or the other, the abs would activate on dry pavement.on one occasion the abs activated when my foot was off the brake.the truck would also sway from side to side at highway speed as the friction varied from side to side.when the truck was returned to me once from culligan gmc, the power steering effort had increased greatly.the characteristics of the rear locking differential had been changed.the truck was back to the dealer, david cadillac, many times for the same concern with the front differential.on one occasion the truck was returned to me gushing gear lube from the front axle, on another it was returned to me with the front differential empty.i was charged for a 4 wheel alignment when only 2 wheels can be aligned on this truck.the wrong oil filter was installed, the truck was driven abusively by a dealer employee (it was run beyond mechanical limits while cold as i stood in the parking lot), and when i called the service adviser after the truck had been in his shop for over a week without my hearing what it's status was, the service person screamed at me on the phone "when it is finished i will call you!!!", and he slammed the phone down.

The gasoline gauge on my 2002 gmc sierra pickup does not read correctly after it reaches the 1/4 level.

Exhaust leak on drivers side of engine. Broken bolts on exhaust manifold.

Since purchasing my 2002 sierra pickup with a 5.3l v-8i have noticed a ticking sound when you first start up the vehicle. Worse when it is cold out. After a few minutes it stops. I have had the dealer look at it in the past and they didn't seem tooconcerned with it and or said no noise was found. I called gmc and they issued me an extended warranty for 5 years or 100,000 miles. With approximately 68,000 miles on the truck now the noise is getting worse and is quite loud when you start it up in the morning. It also takes longer to disappear now. When you start to drive it, it is quite loud and you wonder if it is doing damage. It sounds like a hydraulic lifter not getting oil. After it warms up in a few minutes in disappears.

My emergency brake doesnt work...my head lights always burn out...my bed liner is wharped...

Daytime running lights constantly burning out.bulb holder gets melted.90% of chevrolet and gmc truck and blazer have this problem.

Dt*:the contact stated while driving various speeds, the daytime running lights overheated and scorched the remaining light bulb sockets without warning.although the vehicle was not inspected by the dealer, the contact continued to replace the light bulbs as this problem persisted.the manufacturer was not contacted.

While traveling at approx. 20-25mph, pulling away from my home, a small animal ran across in front of me. I hit the brakes, hard, and after a momentary feeling of brake pressure, the pedal went straight to the floor with no brakes whatsoever. I backed up into my driveway, jacked up the truck and placed it on jack stands. The underside of the truck was wet and dripping brake fluid around the abs unit beneath the cab. My wife applied the brake while i examined the underside. An approx. 1/8in hole was found in the incredibly rusty and weak steel line running from the abs to the left frontwhere it joins the rubber line to the l/f caliper. Further examination reveals all steel brake lines are incredibly rusty, structurally weak and in danger of failure. This could lead to a very serious, catastrophic crash with the potential of fatalities.further, all of the steel parts of the fuel lines are also very, very rusty and weak and with the high internal pressures and highly flammable and explosive gasoline inside are another serious hazard. I am a licensed master auto/truck and motorcycle mechanic. In nearly 50 years of driving i have never seen a brake line failure from such massive rust on a vehicle with such low mileage. This vehicle has only 68,830 miles on it. It is unsafe to drive. Many, many other owners of similar gmc and chevrolet trucks have reported similar brake line rust and failure. Repair/replacement cost estimates can be as high as $1200 to nearly $2000. Brake line failure can kill. If ever there was justification for a safety related recall, this is certainly it.

Neither the left nor right cargo gate latch bolts failed to engage when the gate was in the full upright position and where it should have latched.this allowed the gate to fall open when accelerating.lubrication with a silicone wax spray did not seem to free the bolts.repeated lifting of the center handle on the gate followed by quick release did not result in the latch bolts engaging and the handle subsequently broke with minimal effort.once the handle was removed, contact points on the remaining handle hardware and latch bolts then allowed free movement of the latch bolts.the handle has not been replaced but the latches on the gate are easily opened by pulling both cables towards the middle.contact surfaces show little or no corrosion or debris.the gate was always tested for closure and it is suspected that the latch bolts were only partially closing at the time of the incident.the gate had been found open and items lost inthe past but it had been thought the gate had just been left open rather having been closed followed by falling open after latch failure.

I have a 2002 gmc sierra z71 4x4 truck, regular cab with an 8 foot bed. It has 75000 miles. The problem i'm having is both of the outside door handles stick open a little after you pull the handle to open the door and get in. Now when you put the truck in gear, or start moving the doors lock automatically. When you stop and put the truck in park the doors automatically unlock. Now since the outside door handle is stuck slightly open the door won't unlock or open with the inside handle, you have to reach outside push the handle in then you can unlock and open the door. I have electric windows, and have to put them down to reset the outside handle. My concern is, if i was in an accident, and my windows were up, and my battery was damaged, and the truck lost electrical power i can't open the windows to reset the handle, so that i can get out? now i'm trapped in the truck!!

The contact owns a 2002 gmc sierra 1500.the contact received a recall notice in september of 2006 for the abs.the dealer kept the vehicle for a month and performed the recall repair.since the repair, the vehicle does not roll back while parked on an incline with the emergency brake engaged; however, it rolls back on level ground.the contact repaired the rotors and the brake system himself in november of 2007 because the rotors were corroding, which caused the brakes to pulsate.the dealer would not state whether the vin was included in nhtsa campaign id number 05v161000 (parking brake).the failure mileage was 24,000 and current mileage was 34,503.updated 05/19/08.*ljthe consumer stated there was an accident and there was damage to his vehicle.updated 05/19/08

Complete emergency brake failure.the e-brake does not hold on even a slight incline.further research shows that this is a common complaint by gmc truck owners on the internet.there was a recall for the vehicles with manual transmissions, but not vehicles with automatic transmissions.this does not make sense...

Failure of parking brake on 2002 gmc sierra pickup. During state inspection it was found to be unable to hold. It was found that the adjustments screws on both rear emergency brakes were fully disengaged, so this meant that they had backed off.they were against the stops.they were adjusted back up, but this will most likely happen again. I am a mechanic and know this is a defect that could cause deaths if this is not corrected. The car inspection center where the truck was inspected said there is a manufacturing defect that the dealers know is bad, but they do nothing to correct the defect.he said they see a large number of gmc truck that the parking brakes is defective. (many of the people also say they never use the parking brake.

Similar to nhtsa: 05v161000 my 2002 gmc sierra with automatic tranny experiences the very same premature parking brake wear.wear is uneven and just in 2 little places instead of even wear on whole shoe.brake wears very quickly then will not hold putting undue stress and causing failure of parking pawl in automatic tranny.gm refused to do anything.gm will not fix my vehicle or apply recall since i do not have manual tranny.if anything, automatic tranny is worse since it damages tranny due to stress on pawl since parking brake does not hold vehicle.when brake shoes were replaced, they worked for very short period of time.$250 to replace and i was told it was a known problem and i would be wasting my money because they would wear out quickly again.odd that shoes wear when vehicle typically is not moving when brake is applied or released.

2002 gmc sierra with automatic transmission has both the abs problems that have a recall only along east coast states and the parking brake problem that has a recall for manual transmissions.

Parking brake failure on 2002 gmc sierra 1500 2wd 4dr ext cab w/ automatic trans. Due to excessive wear of friction linings due to defect in release mechanism. Have 50k miles on vehicle & emergency brake shoes have worn into rotors. The lack of a working parking brake has caused the transmission to lock in park when on an incline, especially when towing. Vehicle will not pass state inspection because of this. Reference nhtsa #pe03057, #ea04011.

Parking brake on 2002 gmc failed repeatedly. The parking brake pedal wentto the floor. First told thiswas normal. Second complaint brakes were adjusted. Third complaint cause was found. The brake failedto completely release. The brakewore outprematurely and overheated. The problem continued after repeated attempts to repair.the rear axlesneeded replacement due to overheating/damage to seals and bearings. Use of four wheel drive with rear brakes locked transferred torque to front steering knuckle which required replacement. A warped rear brake backing plate has been replaced due to excessive heat.the vehicle has 70,000 miles. The parking brakes didnot work again and need repair with the outcome unknown.

Noticed that parking brake doesn't work anymore.(looked on line and noticed that there was a recall for manual transmission but not for automatic.also noticed a lot of people have the same problem.i believe it is a safety issue even with an automatic since people pull trailers and park on inclines setting the parking brake.

The contact owns a 2002 gmc sierra 1500. The contact stated that while parked, the gear could not be moved into drive or reverse. The failure recurred five times. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who diagnosed that the sun gear and planetary gear needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired by the independent mechanic. The manufacturer was made aware of the problem. The approximate failure mileage was 150,000. The vin was not available.

Gm technical bulletin00-07-30-022c(automatic transmission)failure of reaction sun gear with only 36,xxx miles (2002 gmc sierra 1500 4.8l). This appears to have been a problem for at least a decade with continual failures until gm upgraded the defective components in 2003. Repair estimates could be over $2,000. Cash available = $200. Gm should take responsibility for known defective parts.

On dec 8, 2003 i was driving at approx. 45 miles per hour when my transmission shifted out of gear and then after a few secounds it shifted into low gear, all on its own. There was a car traveling behind that almost hit me from behind. I pulled over and put my truck in park. I looked under my truck to see if any thing had come apart. I did not see any fluid leak or any loose parts. I drove my truck to the dealership in low gear. They took my truck in for repairs (38,127 miles). I was 2,127 miles out of warranty. The transmission was repaired and it cost $1,057.19.today 3/30/05 on my way home from work the transmission does the same thing. I only have low gear and no reverse. This time i was lucky that no one was behind me when it happened.

Someone should check into why the air bag did not deploy as well as the seat belt.

Vehicle was parked in garage. Metal support bar in the back upper portion of driver seat broke. Seat was being used as ordinary and snapped when i went to retrieve item from back seat by reach over center console and to back seat to grab purse. I weight 135 pounds and am small person. No extraordinary pressure or weight shift. I have found numerous complaints online from people seeking solutions on how to repair this extremely common issue as to lead me to believe these seats are defective and dangerous .refuse to drive truck as not certain that safety belt will be of any use in an accident as seat flops around now and has awkward tilt back to one side on the console side and lays back to far to clearly see over dash even when fully posturing erect.

The contact owns a 2002 gmc sierra 1500. While driving 25 mph, the brakes failed without warning. The contact stated that the zinc aluminum alloy on the brake lines caused severe corrosion. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that all the brake lines needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vin was invalid. The failure mileage was approximately 60,000.updated 07/18/17*lj

My husband was heading out to drop off my kids to the babysitter.he was traveling highway speeds of 55/60 mph when he needed to hit brakes for slower traffic.he did so and there were no brakes.he was able to use the shoulder of the road and the emergency brake to slow down and stop safely.we had the truck towed back home and apparently the front brake lines are rusted through and need to be replaced.we've already replaced brake lines to the back, now we'll be replacing all the brake lines.

There was almost a crash!a car, from the right side, started to pull out in front of me at an intersection. I hit the brakes hard and felt what i thought was the abs activating. Fortunately the car stopped and i was able to swerve around the car and i avoided a collision. It was close! a 1/4 mile down the road i applied the brakes to turn left into my destination and the brakes were not effective and the pedal went to the floor.we inspected the truck and found brake fluid leaking in the vicinity of the rear axle. We looked underneath and found the main metal brake line that goes over the gas tank to the front of the vehicle has ruptured.we called the local gmc dealer and found no recalls or service campaigns for this problem.the truck is now at a local independent shop for repairs.

Today i was on freeway in bumper to bumper traffic and when i went to stop my brakes fluttered and made a weird noise and i pushed with all my strength on brake pedal to stop and wasn't able to stop like 25 other cars in my life would have stopped and rear ended a minivan, there was minimal damage done to his van, my bumper has a little dent and his van has a small scratch, this i the third time in last week this has happened with the first 2 me thinking it was nothing because it only happens maybe 1 out of every 300 brake applications, i came home today and did some research on google and found out there are 1000s of trucks like mine with the abs activating at low speeds causing crashes, i called gm and asked a few questions and all they said was my vin does not qualify for abs or brake recall gm had on these yr trucks. If my truck is doing the same thing as these trucks that qualified for recall why wont they fix mind because obviously its same problem, the gm guy i spoke with played dumb and act like he has never heard of someone having my issue, he is lying because there is tons of people on these gm forums that have called gm with same problem as mine with same results, please help me or let me know what recourses i have to have gm fix this abs issues before someone gets killed, thank you

The contact owns a 2002 gmc sierra 1500. While driving approximately 30 mph, the contact depressed the brake pedal and the pedal was abnormally depressed into the floorboard. The contact stopped the vehicle and after inspecting, he noticed that all the brake lines were corroded. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer for diagnostics or repairs. The vin was not available. The approximate failure mileage was 78,000.

Was approaching an intersection and light turned yellow, applied brake and peddle went right to the floor, coasted through red light and immediately parked vehicle. Towed to local garage and front brake line in the middle (under rock guard) severely rusted and failed.

The contact owns a 2002 gmc sierra 1500. The contact stated that while driving approximately 5 mph with the vehicle in reverse and depressing the brakes, the brakes went straight to the floor board. The contact engaged the emergency brake to stop the vehicle. The contact stated that the abs warning lights illuminated on the instrumental panel. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and they advised him that the brake lines in the rear of the vehicle were rusted away and they needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired for the rear brake lines. Approximately 4 months later the contact stated that the failure recurred while driving slowly in a parking lot. The contact stated that the mechanic was on site and advised him that the brake fluid was pouring out rapidly. The vehicle was taken to the dealer again and they informed him that brake lines along the door were rusted. The vehicle was repaired for the brake lines. The manufacturer was contacted and they offered no assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 177,000 and the current mileage was approximately 178,000. Updated12/31/12updated 1/4/2013

The contact owns a 2002 gmc sierra 1500. While driving approximately 25 mph, the brakes failed. The vehicle had to be towed to a independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the brake hose needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vin and failure mileage were unknown.

Abs sensor in hub failed this is one of four identical failures of the same part in this vehicle.

Thankfully i was in a parking lot, i was backing up and my brake pedal went right to the floor and i had no brakes at all. The brake line on the driver's side front burst. I have my truck at a local shop and its going to cost around $1500 to replace the brake lines.the cost is mostly labor. If loose the front brakes, i would expect the rear brakes to work but that is not the case.i am thankful i was not on the highway or pulling a trailer.i could of got hurt or hurt someone else. Gm needs to look into the quality of partsused in their vehicle especially something as important as brakes.

I approached a busy intersection and because traffic signal was turning amber, i applied my brakes and there were no brakes.the brake lines had corroded andbroke.although i filed a complaint last year, gm has decided that even though there are numerous incidents regarding the cheap parts they used in these vehicles, they would not issue a recall.in fact, there was a newspaper article 2 weeks ago that stated there would be no recall because most of these accidents were in northern states where salt is used on the roads in winter. However, now they have issued a very limited recall for cadillac ctss for the exact years that our gmc suffered same kind of brake failure.the cost to replace these faulty parts is estimated at $2000 per vehicle. But the danger to life and property is much greater.don't understand how there can be such a limited recall when more than this one model is affected. And yes, i mitigated my damages by having brakes repaired. But feel that i was cheated, now that restricted recall has been issued.

Pulled into a parking space at a store brake pedal went right to the floor, hit building. Brake lines blew out related to poor quality brake lines from manufacturer.

The contact owns a 2002 gmc sierra 1500. The contact stated that the brakes failed to operate without warning. The bowser dealer was contacted and diagnosed that the brake line experienced severe corrosion and would need to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. Seven years prior to the failure, the brake lines were replaced. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and offered to perform the repair at a discount. The failure mileage was approximately 60,000.

I was slowing down to park to unload some recycling and i pressed on my brake pedal and it went all the way to the floor. I was barely able to avoid hitting the person in front of me (outside of their vehicle) and their vehicle. I pumped the brakes but the pedal did not resist at all. My brakes were totally inoperable without using the emergency brake. I got out and had brake fluid streaming out of the lines right below the drivers seat.

Abs system is kicking in at slow speeds,as in a crawl like you were driving next to a walking person.like i am pushing on the brake pedal and it is pushing back and not allowing me to stop truck.very scary

The contact owns a 2002 gmc sierra 1500. The contact stated that while driving 4 mph, the vehicle was unable to stop when the brakes were depressed. The contact stated he felt like the abs system activated and caused the failure but no warning lights were illuminated. The failure recurred numerous times. The dealer was notified and advised the contact to remove the fuse and disable the anti-lock braking system. The contact did not feel that the repair was appropriate. The failure mileage was 92,000 and the current mileage was 93,000.

On monday afternoon 5/11/15 i had just hooked up a small trailer in preparation to go pick up my granddaughter from central michigan university the following day. This was going to require a round trip distance of roughly 400 miles. While turning my truck around to park it for the night i discovered to my horror that the brake pedal on my truck went all the way to the floor with no stopping power at all. This happened suddenly and with absolutely no warning at all. I shudder to think what might have happened if this occurred during the road trip to pick up my granddaughter. I called my son in law who helped me replace a main trunk line for the brakes going to the rear axle. This could have been a disaster and but for the grace of god, did not occur during the trip the next day.

The brake lines arerusted sobadly it will not pass it's next va state inspection. Thistruckhasonly been driven 74000miles. Can this be normal? i am adisabled vet with limited income and can not afford the cost of replacement. There is also more than normal rust of the suspension and other partsunder the body. I believe this has gone on too long and a recall is necessary.

Traveling north on route 28 near chantilly, virginia, a line of cars in front of me came to an abrupt halt.i pressed my brake peddle hard and within three seconds the brake peddle was at the floor.i quickly maneuvered my truck to the right and was able utilize the emergency brake to slow the truck to a stop.incredibly, my son and i were not injured, we did not hit the line if vehicles in front of us, and were all spared a potentially deadly outcome.after coming to a stop, my son and i inspected our truck and brake fluid was leaking from the left supply line to the rear break.the line had burst due to hard braking and corrosion of the fuelline.we were saved for some reason, however, if this had been on a weekday during commuting hours, the outcome would have been entirely different.the nhtsa should continue to hold gm accountable for this poor engineering (fuel lines) and eventual catastrophic situation that will, or probably already has, happened.

2002 gmc sierra 1500-brakes went out suddenly as i was turning into a busy intersection.pedal went right to the floor-no brakes.there was no separate system circuit that brought the truck to a halt, there were no dashboard warning lights engaged, and no brake fluid leak before that would alert me to a failure.had to use emergency brake to pull over to a safe spot- vehicle needed to be towed to repair facility.repair facility stated this is a common problem with these vehicles- but there was no recall or safety bulletins issued that they could locate.

The contact owns a 2002 gmc sierra 1500. While driving approximately 45 mph, the vehicle's braking ability was lost and the brake pedal traveled to the floorboard. The vehicle eventually came to a stop and was towed to the contact's residence. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer or an independent mechanic for diagnostic testing. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 158,000.

A second brake line rusted through causing the pedal to go to the floor unable to stop quickly enough to avoid accident.

While on state highway and driving the legal limit, i was approaching a green traffic signal.an ambulance with emergency lights was approaching from the cross direction.i applied brakes and without warning brakes pressure completely failed.i had absolute minimal brakes and i went completely through the intersection.it appears to be rusted brake lines.when i apply the brakes, brake fluid squirts out of the front passenger side brake line where it crosses over from the driver's side.i have had all my work done at gm dealers and they never have mentioned this issue.i searched the internet and see multiple reports on this issue and that gm states this is a maintenance issue.i am over 60 and have never had a vehicle where the brake lines needed to be replaced.i was fortunate that my lane was clear or this would have resulted in an accident.it is beyond rational thought as to how gm can say this materials defect is not their problem.nhtsa should reevaluate this issue and force gm to recall their product before lives are lost.

While driving at app 50mph i tried to brake to avoid a vehicle which pulled out in front of me and my pedal went all the way to the floor.to my horror i had no brakes!!!!!!luckily my 2002 gmc is a 5 speed manual transmission and i was able to down shift to avoid an accident.using my transmission and finally my emergency brake (which rusted through the year before and cost over $300. To repair)) i was able to pull to the side of the road and safely stop.my auto was towed to a local repair shop where the mechanic showed me the rusted through brake lines.it cost me over $2,000 for repairs.

The contact owns a 2002 gmc sierra 1500. The contact stated that the anti lock system braking system malfunctioned at various speeds. The brakes engaged independently making it difficult to drive the vehicle. The vehicle was inspected by mechanic who found corrosion in the anti lock braking system sensor. The braking system was replaced. The failure recurred several times. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 95,000. The current mileage was 119,000.

While driving in town, i depressed the brake pedal to slow for a stop sign traveling under 25 mph. The pedal pressure felt firm/normal for a brief second and then went nearly to the floor and i was barely able to stop. The brake light on the dash did not illuminate until approximately the 10th time i tried to stop. If there had been someone in front of me or i was traveling in a higher speed zone, i most certainly would not have stopped in time. The diagnosis is the rear brake line rusted through. I've been told by several mechanics that all the brake lines will have to be replaced as they are all so rusted no one line can be replaced without damaging the rest of the lines because of their close proximity to each other. I can't find anyone that will take on the job.

I lost brakes on a return trip from shopping trip at a near by town . I was able to stop by using the emergency brake in time to prevent hitting the vehicle stopped ahead of me at a red light. I was able to get my vehicle home by driving at very low speed and using the emergency brake withwithout any further incident . I attempted to repair the corroded section of the line . While bleeding the brake linesanother section rupture . Upon further inspection i discovered all the lines were corroding and needed to be replaced . Also all the couplings on the fuel lines are corroded . My truck has been sitting in my drive way for lack of the funds to get it repaired .the estimate for the brake lines to be repaired is about $1200.00. I haven't got a clear estimate for the fuel line couplings because the might also have to be replaced if they can't be repaired . The fuel lines other wise are not corroded.

My 16 year old daughter was driving the truck at the time of the failure.she has her temporary license and was driving for the third time.after driving in town and on some rural roads, she started getting too close to other cars at stop lights and stop signs. I began telling her to stop sooner, she said she was trying.it only got worse so we went home.she almost ran into our house as tried to stop in the driveway.because she is a new driver, she did not realize the brakes were going out.after we got out of the truck i noticed a puddle of fluid forming under the driver side. I determined that it was brake fluid.i raised the hood and had her press on the brake pedal.brake fluid started spraying out of a brake line near the frame. The brake lines from the master cylinder to the abs module are very rusty along with every other brake line. This truck may be 12 years old and have 87,000 miles but i have always taken very good care of it and it still looks new inside and out. I do not believe a major safety component like the brakes should be failing at this time. Other critical components have warning systems to alert you to possible failures but when there is no way to tell if something critical will fail i believe those parts should be made to last. If the life expectancy of a part is limited, the manufacturer should recommend service at a reasonable interval.my daughter is now scared to death to drive any of our cars because she feels it could happen again. I am just glad i wasn't pulling my 20 foot boat and had to make a panic stop at highway speeds when the line failed.someone could have got injured or killedi am currently getting quotes to have it repaired. So far i have received prices ranging from $600-1500. I feel gm should cover most to all of these expenses because they used sub-par parts to build a critical component of the brake system.

The contact owns a 2002 gmc sierra 1500. While driving at a low speed, the brake warning indicator illuminated and the brakes failed. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the brake line failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 125,988.updated 02/12/16*lj

Abs sensor in hub failed this is the first of four failures of this part on my vehicle. Each failure cost between $450 to $600 each to repair.

The brake line going to the rear passenger side tire ruptured. The brakes remained barely operable. Was able to drive to dealership by constantly adding brake fluid to tank. All the brake lines needed to be replaced at a cost of about $2000. It was just luck this happened on an empty road and while not carrying a load of material.

The brakes on this truck completely failed without any warning.could not stop the vehicle except for the emergency brake.the brake pedal went all the way to the floor.no warning lights, or any other indications of brake failure until there were suddenly zero brakes.i was very lucky that this didn't happen somewhere else, with my one-year old daughter in the truck.i see that the brake fluid is squirting out of one of the four steel lines just under the master cylinder when the brake pedal is pressed.upon inspection i also see that all the lines look to be corroded.i intend to replace all the brake lines on this vehicle now due to the corrosion seen, as i do not believe it would be safe to drive otherwise.

The contact owns a 2002 gmc sierra 1500. The contact stated that the brakes and abs warning lamp illuminated sporadically. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the technician diagnosed that the abs control module was defective and needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 75,000 and the current mileage was 130,000.

On the morning of friday august 21, 2015, my wife went to move my 2002 gmc sierra. She pulled out of our driveway and proceeded up-hill about 300-400 feet, and then turned around in a neighbor's driveway, when coming back down the hill she tried to brake to stop in front of our house, but the brakes totally failed without any warning. She then went up a slight hill on the other side of our house, but still couldn't stop, and didn't think to put the truck in park as she slowed. She rolled backwards down the hill and was able to steer into a neighbor's yard where the truck came to rest on a berm.at the time she said there were cars parked on both sides of the street and had a car been coming the opposite direction she would have crashed into it. Had there been pedestrians they could have been hit as well. When i came home that afternoon, i added brake fluid to the reservoir, and then pushed on the brake pedal. I saw a huge stream of fluid pour from below the driver's side door. I looked under the truck and found the brake lines surprisingly corroded. If sudden, immediate loss of brakes without any warning is not cause for a recall i do not know what is.

The contact owns a 2002 gmc sierra 1500. The contact shifted into drive and applied pressure to the brakes however, the brake pedal abnormally traveled to the floorboard and the vehicle did not respond to braking attempts. The contact mentioned that the emergency brake was utilized in order for the vehicle to stop. The vehicle was towed to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the brake lines needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The vehicle was repaired. The approximate failure and current mileage was 79,059.

I had a complete brake line failure going up toward intersection yellow light tried to stop almost caused crash,no warning the brake light signal went on after it happened.pulled off into shopping center using emergency brake. Towed to mechanic where i found out the line broke in front of the abs system and all the other lines are just as rusted out and will break if not replaced.

Driving to work one morning, i noticed as i approached a stop sign that i had to push my brake pedal further than i had earlier in my trip.instead of continuing onto the freeway i pulled into a station and tested the brakes only to find that i could push them all the way to the floor and come to a gradual, rolling stop.the truck was towed to a shop where it was found that one of the metal brake lines had rusted through. All 6 lines showed signs of severe rusting.once the lines were replaced the mechanic told me that a second line had rusted to the point that he did not think it would have held pressure if i had only replaced the first failed line.i was advised that the brake lines in this model and year of truck were known to rust and fail early in the life of the vehicle, especially in northern states.

I was at my local coffee shop drive thru. I left the drive thru and as i approached the exit, rolling very slow i experienced the dreaded gm brake failure. My foot went to the floor. Luckily i was able to use the emergency brake before involuntarily merging onto a busy secondary road. I understand rust is inevitable but all of the brake lines are beyond repair according to my mechanic - he will not repair them only replace them. My bigger issue is the fact that since 1967 all cars & light trucks use a dual master cylinder enabling the vehicle to stop incase of brake failure. My gmc and apparently others have the same issue - that even when a line blows the trucks will not stop! the dual master does not do what it is designed to do! this coupled with the fact that i also have been plagued with abs low speed problems since 60k i really feel that gm engineers and bean counters need to agree on safety. Considering that brake lines of thirty years ago are better than late model products would it really be that much for the feds to require stainless steel brake lines? my 2002 sierra looks good but the underside (chassis, suspension parts and brake lines) are not good. This truck is not a good investment and it is definitely full of safety issues. If i was in traffic i am sure that i would not been able to stop without an accident. We as consumers do not need third brake lights and useless abs brakes. We need brakes that work when pressure is applied to the pedal!

Abs sensor in wheel hub failure this is one of four identical failures of this part in this same vehicle.

General motors is aware of an issue with the parking brakes in some model years of their vehicles and have even issued a recall for them to be fixed.they only recalled vehicles with manual transmissions even though vehicles with automatic transmissions have the same brake parts and suffer from the same issue.the parking brakes engage on their own while the vehicle is in motion which causes damage to the pads and drums to the point where they cease to work. This is an unsafe condition especially when towing a vehicle and having to park on an incline.i have contacted them and they just keep telling me that my specific vehicle was not recalled. My vehicle has the same brakes as those that were recalled and have the same issue. 2002 gmc sierra 1500.if you look on the recall website you will see the same make and model year recalled with manual transmissions. Again the transmission is not the issue, its the brakes.

I have a 2002 gmc sierra sle 1500 extended cab pick up. I had the truck on ramps. When i backed off of the ramps, i had total brake failure. Service and parking brakes. I could not stop or even slow down. The truck proceeded down a hill backwards and into a ditch. The brake pedal went straight to the floor. I immediately pushed the parking brake to the floor. No brakes at all. After farther investigation, found the hydraulic brake line that runs along the frame rail to the back brakes completely corroded and all fluid leaking out. Brake line almost corroded into two pieces. The parking brake shoes have worn down to metal on the back of the shoe. This is the second set of parking brake shoes i have replaced in 70,000 miles. The vehicle has been well maintained and these two issues should not be happening.i have read that there is an ongoing investigation into the corroding brake lines and a recall on parking brakes, but only on standard transmission vehicles. Mine is an automatic transmission. How many more damaged vehicles and injuries or deaths does it take for the investigation to turn into a recall?

Brake lines rustedthrough prematurely and without warning pedal goes to floor with no stopping power

While trying to park my vehicle in a parking lot the brakes anti-lock system engaged.i was pulling forward to back into a stall.there was a person walking down the parking lot some distance in front of me.as i applied the brakes to stop going forward and start to back the abs system engaged and i could not stop.the gentleman in front of me thought i was going to hit him, and quite frankly i thought that i was also.the pavement was dry, the temperature was about 62 degrees. This is a dangerous situation.there is nothing wrong with my brakes at higher speeds.i have read some things about issues with the abs speed sensors on the wheels. If this is the case gm needs to recall all of these vehicles before there are serious accidents or deaths!!

My emergency brake doesnt work...my head lights always burn out...my bed liner is wharped...

Slowed down and turned into a parking spot and the abs system kicked in.did get the pickup stopped and noticed brake fluid leaking by the driver real wheel.had almost no brakes getting the pickup home. Upon inspection found the rear brake line had ruptured due to corrosion.the abs system has been kicking for no reason before this.talked to a mechanic and he said there have been a lot of corrosion problems with the 1999 to 2003 gm pickups.

Rear brake line developed leak making vehicle hard to control, very close to having accident. I guest gmwould rather pay out for a few accident deaths than repair this defect. It seems its all about the dollar thansafety.

Was in my driveway about to make a 2 hour drive on the high way.i stepped on the brake to put my truck in reverse and the pedal went to the floor. I inspected the brake lines to see fluid under my truck between the cab and bed.i asked someone to step on the brakes while i saw the brake line shoot fluid very hard. The brake line had burst and was shooting out fluid. I'm lucky this wasn't on the highway as i wouldn't have been able to stop at all.

The contact owns a 2002 gmc sierra 1500. While driving between 3-8 mph, the brake pedal was depressed and the anti-lock brake system engaged, increasing the braking distance. There were no warning indicators illuminated. The contact mentioned that the failure occurred intermittently. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that there was rust between an abs sensor and the hub in the front driver and passenger side wheels. The hub and sensor needed replacement, but the vehicle was not repaired. The gmc dealer (jeff wyler florence buick gmc, 1154 burlington pike, florence, ky 41042 (859) 279-4590) informed the contact that the vin was not included in any service bulletins or recalls. The manufacturer was contacted and confirmed that the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 05v379000 (service brakes, hydraulic). The failure mileage was approximately 165,000.

All brake lines have rotted out

I was driving about 45 miles an hour coming down an overpass. The brake pedal went completely to the floor and i narrowly avoided a crash. I took to my mechanic.they said that the brake lines were completely rusted out. I am not getting this fixed as it is an older truck but i do think that someone could die from this defect.

Brake line failure.. This incident happened today, 10/26/2014

Brake line failure due to rust through. Truck pedal went to floor in heavy expressway traffic almost causing accident.

I recently took my truck off the road to replace the shock absorbers. While replacing the rear shocks,i noticed that the brake pads were worn to less than one eighth inch thick. I then looked at the front brake pads and noted that they had hardly any wear.i understand that the front brakes do 70% of the braking and the rear brakes do 30%.that made my finding abnormal.all the brake pads and rotorswere replaced, at the same time, about one year ago.when i prepared to change the front shocks, i noted that the abs dashboard light was on.i was turning the vehicle around at the time and when i approached the garage i applied the brakes and the pedal went all the way to the floor.a few seconds later, i felt the brakes modulating and the pedal was forcefully pushed back up to the at rest position.the truck continued to roll and the brakes were ineffective.i have always believed that a dual (front/rear) braking system was a safety feature.i was incredulous that this was even possible.i feel fortunate that i was only navigating in my yard.i pull a 27 foot fifth wheel with this truck several times a year.i can only imagine the outcome if this event happened on the highway with the rv attached.i found many anecdotal stories that were similar to mine on several websites.as of now, this truck is grounded until i find a satisfactory explanation for this.the brake fluid reservoir was found to be completely full of brake fluid and an inspection of the brake lines revealed no sign of leakage.i have not yet delved into the trucks abs system, but i have strong reason to believe it is defective.

Anti lock brakes at low speed activated cannot stop vehicle pressing harder brake line blew had no brakes rear ended vehicle stopped at red light.

My husband was leaving our neighborhood in the morning with my kids in the truck.he got to the end of our street to stop and pull out onto very busy road, but the truck failed to stop.he ended up having to hit the emergency brake, but luckily he was not hit, nor did he hit anything.we found that the brake lines to the back brakes were rusted through.

My 15 year old son driving with me in the passenger seat he has a learners permit applys the brake and it went to the floor not being able to stop properly swerves and avoids a collision with limeted brakes i took over and made it home buy the time i got home i had no brakes and no brake fluid i was releived to make it. I work on cars for a living and never replaced brakelines do to rusting out. There will be a fatality if gm dont fix there problem. I dont live in where it snows very often my couny has 2 salt trucks and my roads i drive dont get salt ,we havent got snow besides a dusting in three years. So to say its trucks in the north is a false statement. I bought a ss aftermarket brake line set i will install it myself . I know it will be labour extensive but it has to be donethanks for letting me vent thanks to you you for reading my complaint.

The contact owns a 2002 gmc sierra 1500. While driving 30 mph, the brake pedal traveled to the floorboard when it was depressed and failed to stop the vehicle. The abs and brake system warning indicators illuminated. The vehicle was towed to the contact's residence where the brake lines were replaced due to rust. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer and dealer were not contacted. The failure mileage was 120,000.brake lines were replaced twice same location on the vehicle. Consumer is now having problems with abs brake lighting on dash ( wheel speed sensors on front tone rings).

I was approaching a stop sign at the end of my street and when i applied the brakes the peddle went to the floor. I rolled to a stop in a grassy area and saw brake fluid leaking from the base of the vehicle.i brought it in to my mechanic and he said the brake lines rusted out to the rear brakes.he replaced the lines from the abs pump to the rear axle and the brake lines from the rear axle to the rear calipers. The cost to replace the se lines was $433.46.this is the second time this has happened to this vehicle see odi number 10402034.

On my 2002 gmc sierra 1500 extended cab 2wd the abs and brake lights go on and off. I had my local gm dealer address this on several occasions they have come to the conclusion that the abs brake module is bad. I asked if there were any recalls on this they said their is a bulletin out that the grounds could be bad so i had them do this fix it did not correct the problem also their was a recall to fix the speed sensors in the wheels which they fixed also did not fix the problem. I decided to google this type of problem to see if other people had this same issue i have found hundred of thousands of people with exact same issue or were it has even gotten worse and the lights stay on all the time. It seems to affect gm vehicles made from 1999 to 2007 cars and trucks but mostly trucks. To me this is a big safety issue most people do not know that when both of those lights are on they have no abs. I was lucky to have a good service manager who explained this to me and how often this problem occurs. Thank you.

Failure of fourth abs hub sensor on this same vehicle each costing between $450 - $600. To replace.

I went to apply parking brake on my 2002 gmc sierra 1500 with 40478 miles on it and there was a loud snap (i had already stopped the truck and was going to park it) - emergency brake pedal went to the floor. Release lever works, pedal will go back up.if it is pushed again the pedal will go to the floor and there is no parking brake.

Pulling into my driveway truck started to slow then the pedal went to the floor.tried pumping the brakes but did not stop untill i hit two garbage cans and pushed them into my garage door.i now have a truck i cant drive and a garage door that will have to be replaced.there was no warning i am just fortinate that no one was infront of this truck. One of the lines to the rear of the truck blew out and lost its fluid all over my driveway.i thought if you lost 1 line the truck could still stop with the front brakes but i had nothing.please warn people before this problem kills people.

The contact owns a 2002 gmc sierra 1500. The contact stated that the brake pedal pulsated when applied, but failed to respond. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the brake sensors needed to be cleaned. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 108,000. Updated 06/29/17*lj

Speed sensors in the front wheel of my 2002 gmc 2wd truck have failed every december for the last 4 years the first time i paid to have it fixedthe second time it was fixed on a recallthe third and forth time it was fixed by my extended warranty company.i called customer service at gmc and talked to a stevie snay on two occasions.first she told me she would do some checking and get back to me.when she called me back she told me that gm would not cover any of my expenses.then she suggested that i purchase a new warranty.i feel that i have been more than patient with them on this matter and feel that since this is a factory defect on an mvss part that they should cover my costs.

My issue with my 2002 gmc sierra 1500 regular cab long bed is related to an abs wheel sensor recall.i had my truck serviced in dec 2005 for the recall problem.the nature of the problem is corrosion at the abs wheel sensor which causes the abs braking system to activate at low speeds when stopping which in turn increases the stopping distance.this is a safety issue that cannot be neglected.i had gone to the bob ross buick/gmc dealership in centerville, oh on 4/30/2009 ' original dealer where i purchased the truck. They performed an inspection for $64.95 plus tax and 10% shop supplies charge. They told me that since the truck was already serviced for the recall, that i am not covered to re-repair/rework the truck for the recurrence of the problem.i contacted gm customer care and worked with a representative named al and then after he said he couldn't do anything for me from gm corporate i was connected to gm district specialist donald howell (1-800-790-5700 x41958).donald also eventually said that gm would not help with getting the work performed.the service request # for my case is 71-758818423.my requirement for resolution is that gm repairs the issue at no cost to me, most preferably by replacing the abs wheel sensors with new ones less likely to corrode.i'm sure that the new product design has the corrosion issue in mind and has found a way to avoid it.as the repair history of my vehicle should state, the abs wheel sensors were cleaned and then spray painted with a 'corrosion resistant paint' to fix the issue in dec 2005.as an automotive engineer who worked for gm/delphi for 14 years of my professional career, i know that what was performed previously is not a permanent fix.i also am willing to bet that i am not the only customer with recurrence of this issue.had it been fixed correctly the first time ' with new abs sensors - then the problem would not have recurred.i should also be reimbursed for the $76.46 i had to spend for diagnosis.

Gmc 2002 sierra abs triggered at low speed. Unable to stop within reasonable distance. Happening 90% of the time no longer able to safely drive this vehicle.no corrective action taken yet.

Brake lines rusted through out truck, failed safety inspection due to rusted lines.

Brake failure. Went to stop at a stop sign and no brakes. I was fast enough on the emergency brake to avoid a collision. Was able to make it home. Checked under truck and the metal brake line had ruptured. Brake lines and fuel lines are rusted. Truck in shop now.

While driving home, someone pulled out in front of me. I applied the brakes and the pedal went straight to the floor. I managed to avoid a collision and made it home as this happened luckily around the corner from my house. I looked for the problem, it didn't take long as under the hood the frame was covered with brake fluid. I was amazed to find that one of the metal brake line had rusted through and the others don't look to be in very good condition. Needless to say i will be replacing all the brake lines with stainless steel lines (a cost of $350.00). I can't imagine why stainless steel lines are not original equipment. Rust seems to be a problem with this vehicle not only the brake lines but also parts of the suspension.

Events leading up to failure:none, all was normal and no problems were experienced..the failure:brake line ruptured due to rusting causing loss of all braking ability.vehicle only 8 years old.barely avoided an accident by steering around the vehicle in front of me.corrective procedure:all brake lines replaced by a professional mechanic. .old brake lines not available.i have the receipt of all work performed.

Moments after leaving the driveway at our home, approaching an intersection at about 25 mph, i applied the brakes on my 2002 gmc sierra, and the pedal went to the floor. I couldn't stop the vehicle before going through the intersection. Fortunately no other vehicles were in the intersection and no accident occurred. After returning the vehicle to the driveway i discovered brake fluid under the truck bed and dripping from the frame.i could not see the source of the leak as it was well hidden either in or above the truck frame. I had the vehicle brought by flat bed truck to a local auto repair garage. The mechanics found the brake lines to be heavily rusted and one had rusted through and failed, causing the earlier brake failure. Because the brake line rusting was so heavy, all the brake lines were replaced. Also,, the two front brake calipers were replaced because of heavy rust. The rusted brake lines are available. The consequences of this was a repair bill of $1149.78, and having my truck in the shop for several days. Luckily, nobody was hurt. If this had occurred later in the day in the same location it may not have turned out the same. This is the third major brake repair done on this truck. I am the original owner. I have had to have the brake pads and rotors replaced twice. Both times i was told the rotors were so badly rusted they needed to be replaced. During the first six years of owning the vehicle it was kept in a garage. It has always been well taken care of. With this repair, i have spent over $3000. To keep brakes functioning on this truck.

The contact owns a 2002 gmc sierra 1500. The contact stated the brake light illuminated constantly, the vehicle lost brake fluid prematurely, and a brake line ruptured while driving. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who performed a diagnostic test that located the failure in the brake lines, and calipers due to corrosion. The vehicle was repaired. The dealer replaced the brake lines, and calipers. The failure mileage was 102,000 and the current mileage was 109,963. Updated 12/20/11*ljupdated 01/19/12

2002 gmc sierra brake line blew, follow up shows massive rust including parts of frame - so bad that brake bleeders on rotors are a pile of rust, cannot be opened.all brake line fittings rusted beyond removal with a wrench, therefore repair shop could not provide a remedy.27,000 miles.

2002 gmc sierra, concerning abs. At low speeds ( less than 5mph) brakes release, will not hold..recall in 2005, was fine ,lasted 2 years, then same thing, virtually no braking at low speeds, dealer said it could be $400 or $500 to fix, i don't think so. I asked him to pull the fuse, refused, found location of fuse and yanked it and the trucks brakes work fine. This is a dangerous situation and should be fixed permanently by gmc.

Vehicle brake pedal goes to the floor at low speeds 5-10mph during stop. The abs light does not illuminate. Very close to serious accident (s). This is not a traction or lack of traction issue. This seems to be wheel speed sensors that continually require replacing. Rear calipers on this vehicle with less than 65k miles have been replaced twice. Brakes have been a problem since new. Brake lines rotted with less than 60k miles on vehicle and gm refused to consider this a defect which it was and is.

2002 gmc sierra 1500 brakeline failure due to severe corrosion of hard lines under drivers side . I was backing out of a parking lot when brake pedal went to floor and had severe loss of braking power. Under further investigation one line was rusted through and others severely corroded.

Abs activates at slow speeds when not needed, causing vehicle to be unable to stop in a reasonable distance.this most often occurs when pulling into a parking space at slow speeds with the steering wheel turned to the left or right.

The contact owns a 2002 gmc sierra 1500. The contact statedwhile driving approximately 15 mph and depressing the brakes, there was a loss of 80-90 percent braking power. The abs system independently engaged and would not disengage. The vehicle was carefully driven home. The rotors and brake pads were replaced and the wheel cylinders were bled by the contact. In addition, the contact disconnected the abs fuse and the failure did not recur. The dealer was not contacted. The failure and current mileage was approximately 94,000.

2002 gmc sierra 1500 5.3 std cab sltwhile braking at low speeds the anti lock bracket system triggers causing unsafe stopping distances.luckily, i've not crash into another car or person, but curbs, shopping carts and ditches have been run into due to the truck not stopping.this happens while braking under 10mph and it is rarely possible to get the truck to normally brake, often i have to kick the emergency brake to try and slow the truck.when braking the trucks abs system kicks in the brake pedal goes from soft and mushy to extremely hard and you can't press the brake pedal.i weigh 220plus and when this happens there is really nothing you can do besides steer out of harms way and keep tapingthe brake pedalwaiting for the abs to stop.this happens everyday i've already had changed out the hubs before knowing of this issue and now i have to replace them again .i'm expecting to have to pay more than1000 us dollars for poor design and recall efforts on gm. I've in chicago and suburbs for the entire life of the truck.i can be reached at [xxx] my name is [xxx]in my most recent brake failure, i was turninginto my driveway and the abs activated and brake pedal got extremely tough to press and my truck rolled into my other parked car. Was driving donw sreet in came to stop sign brakes failed, almost was hit by 2 cars, had truck towed to garage, mechanic said he is replacing more brake lines on gm products than ever before, same thing happened to my 93 eldorado. Gm is using very cheap brake lines that corrode very quickly, they are not protected be any anti-corrosive material or spray. Truck is at an auto serv waiting for repair, was told will be between 6-7 hundred to fix! gm should pay for this!information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6)

The contact owns a 2002 gmc sierra 1500.the contact was driving 15 mph when the brake pedal was depressed into the floorboard abnormally. The contact had to utilize the emergency brake in order to stop the vehicle.after the vehicle was parked, the contact discovered that brake fluids were leaking. The vehicle was taken to a local mechanic who inspected the brakes and brake lines and found that the brake line system was rusted. The mechanic stated that all four brake lines would need to be replaced. The manufacturer was notified of the failure who advised that the brake failure was caused by normal wear and tear. The manufacturer then advised that a representative would return the contact's call at a later date.the failure mileage was 114,000.

Abs sensor activation at slow speed.the truck does not stop normally when brakes applied at slow speed.this is a known defect by gm and nhtsa.recalls have been done but not in my state.this is a safety issue and the recall needs to be expanded to all affected vehicles.despite gm saying that this issue is limited to 20 states and canada, this is not true.a search of the internet has shown this defect is nationwide.abs was added to vehicles to help prevent crashes.this defect causes them.

The contact owns a 2002 gmc sierra 1500.while driving 5 mph, the brake pedal extended to the floor when it was depressed.the vehicle would then experience unwanted abs activation.the contact called the dealer in reference to nhtsa campaign id number 05v379000 (service brakes, hydraulic:antilock).a technician stated that his vehicle was included in the recall, but they would only assume responsibility for repairing the reluctor ring.the contact would have to pay for the hub assembly repair at the cost of $800.the vehicle has not been repaired.he called the manufacturer on numerous occasions and is still waiting for a response.the failure and current mileages were 52,500.

The abs system has an open short between the abs pump and the abs module.these components are located under the vehicle mounted to the frame rail.this is safety related equipment and was mounted in a highly corrosive spot, subject to road salt and water.

Brake lines rusted & failed. Brake pedal went to floor and truck could not stop. Fortunately it occurred in a parking lot & no one was hurt. This was a 2002 gmc 1500 extended cab pick up truck which was purchased new in 2003. It turned out all brakes lines are severely rusted and needed to be replaced. This truck had 80,000 miles on it and has been well taken car of. All lines were replaced at considerable cost. There was no warning before the incident. It could have happened at 60 mph. I also own a 2003 gmc yukon which now appears to have the same problem. I went on line and found many other angry owners with the same problems. I have been driving for 40 years and never had this happen to any other car i owned. Someone could get killed!!

Brake line failure do to excessive rust. All brake lines had to be replaced as they we all rusted excessively.

Brake line failure on my 2002 gmc sierra 1500 1/2 ton 4wd pickup. Brake line failed because of rust. My truck has only 47000 miles on it and well cared for. When it happened i was turning intoa parking lot and the brake pedal went to the floor almost hit street sign. I had to get the truck towed. The garage had to replace all brake lines, front hoses and calipers because of rust.the total bill came to $1030 including the tow. The garage told me they have to replace these brake line on these early 2000s gm truck all the time. There has to be a recall on these truck because you haveno warning when this happens. Very scary when it does.

On or about november 12 the brakes on my 2002 gmc sierra 1500 pickup truck failed suddenly when approaching a stop sign and i passed through the intersection, being unable to bring the vehicle to a halt in the distance available.while the intersection was clear, and no accident resulted, my vehicle was completely disabled.a local mechanic said the brakeline had failed - even though there are less than 32,000 on the vehicle.he said he had seen several failures on vehicles of similar vintage and light service.repairs cost over $900.gmc assumed no liability.

1. Anti-lock brakes activation at low speeds 3-5 mph.2. Always the first time applied when cold after that at various times 3. This is the same conditions as nhtsa 05v379000 or gm 05068 which started in 2005. The truck was looked at then when there was no problems but when the problem is happening now gm says that it is only a one time recall. The dealer looked at the truck and said the hub was worn and needed replaced for $500 per side. When i questioned the service rep if the bearing was worn he said no. I then asked what was worn since the hub is the bearing. He said i did not have to have it repaired if i did not want to. I explained that i wanted the recall work done which was cleaning the rust from the sensor. I also stated that there are magnets on the hub that pass the sensor creating an electrical impulse so if the bearing was not worn are the magnets worn? he said the hub was bad and needed replaced. I declined the work. I complained to gm and they said that i was told it was a bad sensor and declined the work or further diagnosis. That was a lie. I then did therecall procedure of removing the sensor and cleaning the rust away. There is also no bearing play so the hub is not worn. The brakes now work fine. So a couple of things here. If there is a safety recall and it comes back as this did should they have done this work. Second the service department at joe ball gmc is running a scam and making money on people that do not know better.

Driving along at approximately 25 mph and tried to stop for red light and brake peddle went to floor. Was able to stop against curb. Checked and found brake fluid leaking from under drivers side door. Vehicle found to have rusted out brake lines. Specifically leaking were the lines to and from the abs unit.all four forward facing lines were rusted in clip in frame. At least two were leaking. Replacedfour lines out of nine may need others replaced in future.took picture of leaking area and have section of old line with leak. Cost to replace the four lines waslines was $515.83. This pick up only has 63k miles.brake lines should last.

2002 gmc sierra, 84,000 miles.driver's side rear metal brake line blew when leaving a garage and i had to use the emergency brake to stop.if it would have happened a minute later, i would have been going down a steep hill into rush hour traffic, potentially hurting or killing others or myself.this happened without warning.mechanic says all lines should be replaced due to excessive rust.i do live in pa, but i have never had a brake line rupture due to rust in a not so old car or truck.regardless of the cost to fix, this is unacceptable and completely unsafe.there are many others that have the same problem, and many more who are not even aware of the time-bomb they are driving.

The contact owns a 2002 gmc sierra 1500. The contact stated that when pulling into his driveway, he noticed that the brake pressure was low and the pedal depressed to the floor. The vehicle was diagnosed by the owner and he noticed that the brake lines fractured and needed to be replaced. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer had not been notified. The failure and current mileages were approximately 66,000. The vin was unavailable.

The contact owns a 2002 gmc 1500.the contact heard a loud grinding noise when the brake pedal was depressed.he noticed that the front brakes were rusted very badly.the rear brakes were rusted as well, but not as badly as the front brakes.the dealer stated that there were no recalls; therefore, they could not assume liability for the failure.the failure mileage was 48,000 and current mileage was 50,800. Abs activating at low speeds was brought in under warranty and repaired once already. Probably 2004. Now same thing again 2008. Very dangerous when you step on brake and abs activates for no reason (other than poor design) at low speed and increases your stopping distance by 10 plus feet.

* 3-may-06: vehicle taken in to dealer at 29 k mi for recall to inspect both front wheel abs speed sensors.total inspection time approx 10 min, no repairs made.one possible braking incident occurred 3.5 yrs earlier.* 24-sep-08, 38 k mi: front brake pads replaced, normal wear patterns. Both rear inner disk brake pads worn to metal and jammed, both rear outer pads little wear, both rear disks heavily scored and replaced.vehicle has been used little fortowing.rear caliper nuts required an estimated 350+ lbs torque to loosen.* 31-jul-09, 39 k mi: near accident on hwy at low speed after very long stop at slow speed, then 3 mi later crash into concrete abutment occurred while parking at idle speed.loud groaning heard fr engine compartment.scan tool info by gm dealer indicated both front abs speed sensors were not sending a signal.body repair to front $800 using used parts and excluding abs sensor replacement. * near total, reproducible brake loss occurs between approx 3 and 7 mph.pressing harder on the brake pedal seems to lengthen the stopping distance.headlamps dim when trying to stop at slow speed while the abs pump is groaning.* problem has yet to be corrected.

Total brake failure due to brake line rust through.no partial system brake was available, the pedal went right to the floor with the only indication being a couple of soft pedal pumps with minimal braking before total failure.vehicle was traveling in city traffic. There had been no panic stops up to this point. No accident occurred.i had to use emergency brake to stop vehicle.vehicle is now parked, waiting for repair. Total brake line replacement needed due to massive rusting.

Recent pre-purchase inspection of 2002 gmc sierra 4wd indicated excessive corrosion of chassis and brake lines which resulted in a recommendation of immediate brake line replacement to pass pennsylvania vehicle safety inspection certification.

Brake pedal goes to floor and is kicked back, no brakes at low speeds 5 to 8 mph. Was subject to recall when still under manufactures warranty. Problem is same now. No brakes at low speeds. Purchased this vehicle new, very low mileage. Gmc will not respond to complaint. This is a serious issue.

2002 gmc sierra brake line failure. I was driving to work today when a school bus stopped in front of me to drop off some children. As i tried to stop my brakepedal went right to the floor and i was unable to stop, i was going down a fairly steep hill and had to steer onto the roads shoulder in order to avoid a collision. My truck traveled about 400 feet before coming to a stop.

2002 gmc sierra pu anti lock brakes failed in 2005. Close encounter when brakes failed to stop vehicle. Brakes were repaired under warranty. Brake failure again in 2009 and paid out of pocket to have repaired. Same brake failure for third time. 2010 anti-lock brakes currently disconnected.

1.brakes were fully operational after the initial recall was completed (10/13/05).recently, january 2010,my anti-lock brake system has triggered at low speeds under 10 mph causing my truck to not come to a complete stop.this is the same problems i was having prior to the initial recall.releasing the brakes and reapplying the brakes have worked to stop the vehicle so far.2. The failure happens about 1 in 5 stops depending on the speed of the vehicle. I have nearly hit several cars in parking lots, because of the slow speed during parking.3.gm had a recall 4 years ago on the wheel speed sensor (05v379000)all they did was clean and lubricate the unit. Not adequate enough, since i am having the same problem over again.

- the contact stated that while drivingthe2002 gmc sierrawith 10,900 failure mileage at 15 mphin thedriveway he put the foot on the brake pedal and the abs system engaged , not allowing the vehicle to stop.the vehicle went through the garage wall. The contact owns a 2002 gmc sierra 1500.while applying pressure to the brakes, the abs activated automatically and the vehicle jerked backwards.he took the vehicle to the dealer and they repaired it according to nhtsa campaign id number 05v379000 (service brakes, hydraulic:antilock).immediately after the repair, the failure recurred and the vehicle was taken back to the dealer.they inspected the vehicle and stated that the passenger side front speed sensor was causing the failure.the speed sensor was replaced.the failure mileage was 36,769 and current mileage was 41,775.

When operating vehicle at slow speed and attempting to stop anti lock brakes engage and increased stopping distance is required. This vehicle was recalled for same problem in 2005. I made an attempt at my local gmc dealer to remedy this continuing problem. However, i was informed that general motors would only make one attempt to remedy issue and that i already had used that. The dealer representative stated that i could pull the fuse on the abs and the vehicle would perform stopping without the aid of abs and would stop normally in dry environment, without the assistance of anti lock brakes. Antilock brakes on 2002 gmc sierra truck activate for no reason at speeds of 5mph or less making the vehicle unsafe to drive.there was a recall on the sensors for this reason.i had my sensors "taken care of" and afterwards started experiencing this exact problem.i was told that the hubs are bad and this is why the anti locks are coming on.the sensors can not read the hub "correctly".the hubs, which are not a wear item, can be replaced for $1000.this is on a 2002 pick up truck with 46,000 miles on it and is garage kept.the hubs are a non wear item.poor engineering is the culprit of this problem.the hubs should be replaced just like the sensors were.i was also told that on my gmc truck i cannot have the antilock brakes deactivated.as a result, i have to spend the $1000 to make my truck safe to drive.probably40,000 miles in the future i can replace the hubs again for $1000.$1000 to replace a non wear item.antilock brakes are on a vehicle to make the vehicle safer.the antilocks on my gmc make the vehicle undrivable because of being unsafe.it should be possible to depend on your brakes to make you stop.with my vehicle i can't stop.this is not a wear item that is causing my problem.this is poor engineering!this should be covered under a recall, same as the sensors were covered under a recall.gmc will cover the sensors but not what the sensors are looking at.

There is abnormal brake rotor deteriation and rusting due to poor manufacturing or steel formulas which rust accerlerates and wears down the pads unevenly. I have worked on brakes on many autos and a few trucks i've owned over the last few decades and never have seen such rusting and surface flaking of the disk rotor on my vihicle. I had my dealer look at the rotors and they agreed it may be a bit excessive. I have to replace all four rotors due to poor quality and unrepairable rotors. The rotors look like they came off a 20 year old truck....this is a safety and quality problem that should be looked into. Thank you

Dt*: the contact stated when the brakes were depressed there was a loud grinding noise. While the vehicle was being inspected, the dealership noticed the rotor had a 1" wide and 3" long gauge in the metal about "deep.the contact determined this was due to porosity.the dealership informed the contact this was normal wear and tear on the rotors.

161131 miles frame rusted real bad body looks great for the year i just bought the truck looked real clean inside and out from origanal owner put it on a lift and the frame is so rusted out did some googleing and found that most all these trucks were built to rot out in 3 years

Spare tire fell off from the cable, unknown, i also had a 2001 gmc yukon and the same thing happened, this is unsafe as it could become detached while moving and needs to be recalled

Under the driver and passenger doors the body has rusted through.this is the only spot on the entire truck that has rust.i took it to the dealer that i originally purchased it from and was told that since it had 103,000 miles in it they were unable to help.

2002 gmc sierrathe galvanized steel support cables that retain the tailgate in the open position corrode through and break where cargo or people on the tailgate may fall.cargo falling of the tailgate very nearly struck a nearby person and injury was luckily avoided.this has occurred twice on the vehicle, the first time gmc replaced the cables under warranty and suggested that this was a random failure.most recently they have refused to correct the problem.gmc was notified of this and refused to take corrective action.

I sat on my tail gate and the tail gate fell down. When i looked i had one broke cable and the other side the bolt was missing. I bought two cables from advance auto replaced one side but i could not get the bolt back in the other side. I was planning to take the truck to the dealer the following weekend for the recall but the gate fell off the truck and i did not know it had fell off and i dragged it down a dirt road for about half mile or more. I tried to get gmc to replace the tail gate but they just wanted to replace the cable saying that the cable did not cause the tail gate to fall off and the damage was not due to the cables. I feel that the cable problem caused the tail gate to fall off.

Frame is completely rotted & any service station i take my truck to for service or inspection refuses to work on my truck due to safety from accelerated frame rust & rot. I found upon further investigation that gm refuses to fix the problem. I now have a vehicle that is not road worthy & unsafe even thou it has low miles & is in excellent condition, i am unable to get a state inspection on this vehicle & i am not able to drive my vehicle in my state due to this problem.

Dear sir,i have a 2002 gmc pickup that has had the spare tire fall out of its mount due to severe rust of the frame. Upon further investigation my frame has severe rust in several other areas. I have contacted gmc and was basically told to have a nice day! i purchased this vehicle new and it has 57,000 miles total. My body shop tells me that the only way to repair this frame is to replace it! i find it appalling that gmc sells a $40,000.00 vehicle that has a life cycle of 8 years. I cannot sell this vehicle to anyone and tradein would be a joke. Is there any way you could make gmc face this problem and resolve it? either replace the pickup or frame? any help would be greatly appreciated!

Broken weld holding right rear shock absorber to rear axle. Gm is denying that this weld was defective. This right rear shock absorber broke loose from the rear axle while driving on hwy 101.

The contact owns a 2002 gmc sierra 1500. While driving 30 mph, the front of the vehicle shook and wobbled so violently that it left the contact disoriented. The contact had no control over the vehicle and had to pull over for a while. When the contact retuned to the road, the vehicle continued to shake. The failure occurred between the speeds of 30-45 mph. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who installed new bearings, which made the failure worse. The vehicle was taken to two other mechanics, but each repair failed. The manufacturer and dealer were not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 177,000.

161131 miles frame rusted real bad body looks great for the year i just bought the truck looked real clean inside and out from origanal owner put it on a lift and the frame is so rusted out did some googleing and found that most all these trucks were built to rot out in 3 years

The contact owns a 2002 gmc sierra 1500. While driving at various speeds, the abs warning indicator illuminated. The contact stated that the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the passenger side front hub assembly failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. Shortly afterwards, the vehicle was taken in for inspection and the contact was notified by the service technician that the driver side front hub assembly failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The vin was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 07e106000 (wheels). The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 169,000.

I have a 2002 gmc sierra 1500 extended cab pickup with 52000 miles on it.the front hub bearings are already require replacement.on consulting with the local garage, i discovered this was not an anomaly, but , rather, a common occurrence.my previous experience over the years with gm products is that front wheel bearings could be packed or replaced at reasonable cost, and the parts provided audible notice of failure.the current design does not provide this safety feature.the entire hub must be replaced when it fails. At a cost just quoted of just below $450 per wheel.the unfortunate fact is that it is unknown how many owners of gm products from 1998 onward are driving with wheel hubs that are so worn that a catastrophic failure could cause loss of a wheel at highway speeds..until the resolution of this design shortfall, highway driving is extremely dangerous.

Truck began to grind and pop as i went around corners. I had it checked out and both of the front wheel bearings went bad within first 70,000 miles. Gm would not back the vehicle. Parts alone cost over $400 to fix the vehicle.

My emergency brake doesnt work...my head lights always burn out...my bed liner is wharped...

The paint job is peeling and the clearcoat is bubbling causing the truck to look horrible. It is a great truck with exception to this.

The spare tire hoist failed causing my spare tire to fall off. Luckily this happened in my driveway. If this had happened on the road it could have caused a fatality to anyone behind me. The cable appears to be the same material that the tailgate cables were made of. The cables were already recalled by gm.

Spare tire fell off from the cable, unknown, i also had a 2001 gmc yukon and the same thing happened, this is unsafe as it could become detached while moving and needs to be recalled

The contact owns a 2002 gmc sierra 1500. The contact was driving approximately 5 mph in rainy weather conditions and pressure was applied to the brake pedal, followed by an activation of the anti-lock brake system.the failure occurred at extremely low speeds. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer who stated that the failure was contributed to severe corrosion in the anti-lock brake sensor. There was a prior recall repair under nhtsa 07e106000 (wheels:cap/cover/hub).however, the remedy failed to correct the safety related defect. The vehicle has not been repaired for the malfunction.the failuremileage was 34,000.the steering shaft was replaced.updated 02/18/10
