"takata recall" on 02/17/2015 i [xxx]was involved in a single passenger (me) mva at "the macinac bridge" on the north side of the mackinac bridge rolling my truck into the toll booths located on the north end of the macinac bridge in the city of st ignace, mackinac county, michigan. The weather conditions that day were horrible. There were high winds, snow, sleet, rain, and i black ice ! 100% humidity ! after the accident came to a complete stop i opened my eyes and an inflator was launched directly at my head. If it had hit me there i would be dead right now. I reacted quickly by tilting my head to the right and the inflator hit the left side of my head using it as glide path thus changing the trajectory next is what i call the most horrific thing to ever happen in my entire 51 year life span thus far on earth, the inflator blew up off the back-side of my head point blank, changing my life as i know it forever. That day on 02/17/2015 the [xxx] everyone knows and loves actually died. What i can't believe is there is this survivor of one the most horrific recalls in modern day auto history and they label it a "silent recall" that just blows my mind, who ever heard of a "silent recall" and nobody wants to talk with him (me) for some strange reason or else know one who should know has been properly informed? nor has anyone from gmc or takata called to at least apologize for the lifetime (closed head injury) inconvenience; why? :-((( sincerely,[xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

The contact owns a 1998 gmc sierra 1500. While driving approximately 35 mph, a deer ran in front of the vehicle. The contact crashed into the deer. The air bags did not deploy. A police report was not filed. The vehicle was taken to a certified mechanic who diagnosed that the vehicle needed a front end alignment due to the collision. The contact received injuries to the head and knee, which required medical attention. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.

The contact owns a 1998 gmc sierra 1500. While the contact was seated in the vehicle, the passenger side air bag deployed inadvertently. When the contact exited the vehicle, the driver's side air bag deployed without warning or an impact. There were no injuries. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer and dealer were not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 230,000.

Several months ago, my airbag light came on and didn't extinguish.i took my 1998 gmc extd. Cab pickup to the dealer and they completed repairs ($755.14, even at a discounted rate).the problem was the sir coil intermittently was grounding, causing a short in the sdm module. My airbag has never deployed and the truck has never been involved in an accident.since airbags were mandated back in 1998, i would have hoped that i would never have had a problem with that system! seems to me this should be warranted for the life of the car, barring deployment from an accident.

The contact owns a 1998 gmc 1500. The contact attempted to start the vehicle and discovered there was little to no power. None of the electrical components were operable. The contact inspected the vehicle and as he removed the covering from a plate under the steering column, he found that there were several burned wires. He then spliced the wires together and used a rubber protector to protect the wires from rubbing against the metal.the vehicle was not taken to the dealer for repairs.the vin was not available.the failure and current mileage was 64,000.

Gas gauge acted erratically.warming up vehicle while sitting in idling position for about 10 minutes and all of sudden heard a loud noise.vehicle stopped running, smoke was coming out from around the fuel tank.contacted dealer.still under warranty, was told that the wiring harness that is attached to the fuel tank had a short,it was melted. *ml

Had a antifreeze leak for months.started looking around and noticed the fitting from the heater core return line into the engine block was corroded and ready to fall of.i barely touched the return line and it the fitting snapped off.i'm the 3rd person i know with this same problem, same vehicle.there is obviously a problem here gm needs to address.

Gm has admitted it has faulty seals on the coolent system and has claimed dex cool is fine but the radiator caps are faulty as they corode.if the dex cool corodes the caps will it not follow it may corode other parts of the system?and if gm has admitted installing faulty seals why won't they at least recall this part and fix it instead of making the consumer fix it for them.i have been experiancing cooling system problems and wish the company would at least fix the problems they admit to.i do not want to go to the garage one day and find all the coolant on the floor.

Service request # filed at general motors regional office #(71-448842107)intake manifold gasket leaking in all 4 corners on my gmc sierra pick up truck. Loss of anti-freeze, and possible seizure of engine. Backorder of gm intake manifold gaskets. A petition has been created and sent to gm and the better business bureau explaining ....as of april 10, 2002, there is a nationwide backorder of the intake manifold gasket. At this time, is it not even known when the part will become available. Being aware of this proves there is a serious problem to be addressed. Because of apparent poor engineering, gm can not manufacturer replacements fast enough for all the vehicles in which they are needed. Intake manifold leaks can lead to any number of very serious, and expensive, problems. While the part itself isn't costly, the labor to repair it is very intensive, and has been quoted around $800 usd (give or take a couple hundred depending on the vehicle). This is in addition to any other costly problem(s) the intake manifold gasket leak may have produced. We are demanding accountability from general motors. A nationwide backorder should be reason enough for gm to assemble a recall. We can only hope that the world's largest vehicle manufacturer who has been the world's automotive sales leader since 1931 will stand up and claim responsibility for a problem that is so prevalent among their vehicles. Recalls should be mandated in all cases of incompetence, not solely when it affects public safety. Sincerely,13,000 signatures http://www.petitiononline.com/gmcnsmrs/petition.html

When i bought truck (120,000 miles) the previous owner informed me that the gas tank was full.after 200 miles i wondered why the gas gauge was still on full.talked to several people with the same problem, same vehicle who had to replace the sending unit on the fuel pump.this corrected the problem.gm needs to start taking responsibility for vehicle defects.

My 1998 gmc 1500 pickup has 121,000 miles vin#[xxx]. Within the last 50,00 miles and/or 2 years i have had to replace the fuel pump and sender three times andat a cost of $1000.00 each time. I spoke with firestone service manager and he informs me he has a similar model andhas had the same difficulty and has also had other repairs to same year models that he has serviced. I cannot find any recalls or service issues, nor complaints on your web site. I feel therefore it is important to log on this serious problem on this gmc year model.updated 07/26/2012information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6)

Fuel injectors have failed 10 times so far , replaced twice , cleaned, resultingunable to mantian speed and stalling in intersections.

I was standing on the tailgate unloading oil and the driver's side cable on the tailgate broke.i was not injured but was upset because i thought maybe there would be damage to my tailgate, that it may may dented or sprung.i purchased a new cable and installed.i questioned the cable as to how it looked when broken.it almost looks as though it was cut.the cable being covered did not show any signs of wear.i would have thought the cable should have broken in strands.it just seems to be an unusual break.

My dashboard became brittle, and falls apart if you touch it!also my transmission has had to be rebuilt three times. But im only worried about my dash.

Transmission shop stated he has seen many failures with this model. Keeps new parts in stock and ready for more to come.

My transmission has failed 3 times, each time losing reverse, 2nd and 4th. The first time between 40k -50k the second time about 65k and the third at about 95k miles. I rarely pull heavy loads in this truck.

While driving through a stop light i heard and felt a metallic bang. The transmission dropped into 1st gear and wouldn't shift up. I lost reverse too.

Events leading up to the failure are unknnow, at no time was adverse stress or strain placed on this vehicle.the problems began in november 2003 when i lost first gear in my automatic transmission.i dropped the pan to replace the filter and fluid, there were metal roller bearings and metal debree in the pan.i had to have the transmission replaced.80,000 miles is way too young for a transmission to fail.march, my water pump began leaking, i replaced it.april, my heater core began leaking, i by passed it.may, my radiator began leaking, i had to have it replaced.the radiator and heater core are being stored for a short time for me until i can decide if i am going to begin legal class actions on the faulty cooling system on this gmc serria 1500 pickup.gmc offered no assistance.

While driving through a stop light i heard and felt a metallic bang. The transmission dropped into 1st gear and wouldn't shift up. I lost reverse too.

1998 extended cab gmc sierra 1/2 ton.rear differential exploded at 60,000 miles.transmission was rebuilt and now it is acting up again at 80,000 miles.this truck has never been driven by anyone other than myself.this truck has never been abused and i followed the maintenance suggestions in the book.is there some problem with this make/model.i have always owned gmc products and never had any trouble like this.

Driver's side seat tracks wear out every 3-4 months - causes loose seat - when stopping causes driver to slide forward makiing it difficult to control vehicle.the release levers on both sides of front seat have torn holes in sides of the seat.the passenger side seat belt continues to tighten up when going over bumps...so person released belt to put back onwhich can cause injury ifan accident happens at this time.i was told that too bad this is a safety feature so if you want to put in a baby seat.unless the belt is pulled all the way out it is not suppose to tighten up on its own.,but rough roads will make this happen.

Applied break to start truck.foot went to floor, very weak pedal.checked brake fluid level, found front reservoir empty.traced brake lines for leaks.found portion of rear hard brake line between gas tank and rear axle rusted through at bend where brake line leaves frame rail and heads to connect to flexible line at rear differential.entire area around leak, bottom of bed, frame rail, shock, spring, etc. Dripping with brake fluid.replaced a previous section of rear brake linearound 125k miles prior to finding out this was a common problem with gmc / chevy trucks.

No summary listed for above vehicle.

I have had multiple incidents where the brakes have to be applied quick and hard in traffic or on turns where the road is somewhat slightly bumpy or rough and the brakes will chatter and buzz, the pedal goes to the floor and the truck will not stop. On the april 1999 incident the car in front of me stopped in a turn lane to enter a freeway and i had to hit the brakes quick and hard. Well they again rattled and buzzed, the pedal went to the floor and the truck did not stop. I in turn bumped the car in front of me. There was little damage to the car. My truck instead suffered to an overinflated body shop bill to the tune of #3,000.00. The selling dealer did the body repairs and checked the brakes. Mr. Ron byars service manager told me the brakes, after we both test drove the truck and duplicated the no stop condition on hard brake application at slow speeds, that this is a normal condition with abs brakes on these pick ups. Mr. Byars also said his demo was worse than my truck. He also stated there was a check out done where he found no codes or problems. I had also explained to mr. Byars that on most occasions where i had to hit the brakes hard and the pedal went to the floor the front brakes would drag. To release them i had to stop, back up hitting the brakes and they would release. This condition has damaged my brake pads and rotors. He is telling me gm can do nothing to fix my truck. What needs to happen, someone killed or badly injured before gm opens their eyes. I need help.

The contact owns a 1998 gmc sierra 1500.while driving at any speed, the rear brakes shake.the vehicle was taken to a service station and the tires were replaced and balanced, the brakes were adjusted, and the brake shoes and rear brake pads were replaced.however, the rear of the vehicle continues to shake.the contact was informed that the brake shoes move about and there was no way they could be repaired.the contact also stated that the abs light and the service engine soon light were illuminated and have been since april of 2006.the current mileage was 161,000 and failure mileage was 147,625. Updated 3/5/08 updated 03/05/08

I was approaching a busy intersection at a normal speed. When i used the brake it instantly went to the floor. No brakes! i went through the intersection into an empty lot. Thank god no accident. The brake line rotted because gm routed cheap steel lines in areas where sand, salt and water collect. Gmc refused to cover the repair and it cost me 500.00.

The abs pulsates at low speeds, usually at 10 mph or slower. I've almost hit several vehicles because my '98 gmc sierra wouldn't stop. I see where they had a recall on 99 and newer trucks, but they need to go back further. This happens everytimei go to slow down.

Component: service brakes, hydraulicdetails: the abs pulsates at low speeds, usually at 10 mph or slower. I've almost hit several vehicles because my '98 gmc sierra wouldn't stop. I see where they had a recall on 99 and newer trucks, but they need to go back further. This happens everytime i go to slow down.gmc refuses to acknowledge problem prior to 1999.

When the consumer applied the brakes he felt a pulsation.the problem occurred not matter the weather conditions.

While driving consumer stepped onbrake pedal to stop or reduce speed, instead, itresulted in extended stopping distance.also, frontbrakes prematurely wore out,and had to be replaced at 18000 miles.

Dt:the contact stated the absactivated at low speeds.he believed it is due to corrosion on the abs sensors.the problem recurredmore often. No repairs were made.

Since i have owned this vehicle, the antilock brakes seem to engage for no reason on dry pavement.when this happens, you have the feeling that you will not be able to stop. This started after is was out of warranty so the dealer has not looked at this problem.my son is a gmc certified mechanic, and we have investigated this problem and been unable to determine it's cause.i understand that this is a common problem with this make and model of truck, however i can find no detailed reports on this.please advise as to whether you are aware of any problems concerning the braking systems on the gmc and it's sister vehicle the chevy. Thanks, steve varley.

The contact owns a 1998 gmc sierra 1500.while approaching a stop between 1-5 mph, the brakes vibrated, made a hissing sound, and lunged forward.the mechanic diagnosed a failure with the service brakes, hydraulic: antilock.the contact's vehicle year was not included in nhtsa campaign id number 05v379000 (service brakes, hydraulic).the contact filed a complaint with gmc on march 10, 2008 and was issued confirmation number 71-1609860847.the purchase date was unknown.the current mileage was 111,500 and failure mileage was 111,000.

Dt: the contact stated while drivinghe depressed the brake pedal to stop the vehicle andthe anti lock brakes kicked in and out. Instead of stopping it will just slow the vehicle down. Repairs have been made.the consumer was told the wheel speed sensor malfunctioned. Updated 01/25/06.

Vehicle has abs brakes.while pulling vehicle into garagewent to apply brakes and vehicle did not stop. Pedal went to floor. Cause of problem unknown.

When driving below 10 miles per hour my vehicle abs breaks are vibrating . So you have to pump the brakes and then you get a soft break pedal and you need to keep pumping the break pedal to stop the vibration.

When applying the brakes in emergency stoppingit appears as if the pressure applied is insufficient and the pedal nearly goes to the floor, cause unknown.

While driving consumer stepped onbrake pedal to stop or reduce speed, instead, itresulted in extended stopping distance.also, frontbrakes prematurely wore out,and had to be replaced at 18000 miles.

Steering becomes loose when driving into curves. This could cause you to lose control of vehicle.came close to have an accident!!! had went to the nearest gmc dealership, their response was, there's no recall and nothing to worry about.

Dt: steering position sensor failed for the third time when making a turn.the resistance went away, it turned free. The consumer told the dealer it happened frequently.the sensor was replaced twice and this was third time.this caused the operator to make an uncontrolled over-steer turn. *sc

While traversing a freeway overpass going 60 to 65 mph the truck suddenly lurched to the left. Fortunately no immediate traffic on my left. Really frightened me.after much research i discovered that a component (circuit board) of the new "speed sensitive" power steering could fail, making the truck think it was going slower and increase the power steering assist, causing the lurch to the left. This was after having the entire front end of the vehicle checked for alignment, faulty or damaged parts, any adjustments out of spec. They found no cause. I don't actually remember the date and have estimated the date below. I eventually solved the problem (after further research indicating that replacing the circuit board sometimes was only a temporary fix. The solution was installing a "kit" i found online that completely removed the new speed controlled power assistance.i probably had 4 or 5 instances of this occurring, and consider myself extremely fortunate not to have an accident or injury. This was the result of extreme vigilance once i had determined what was happening. During my research i found many reports of the problem, many tried fixes that didn't resolve the problem. One man spent $4000 to have the entire front end of his vehicle replaced, only to have the problem recur. What really bothers me is both why this did not result in a recall, and the fact that this happened so frequently and dealers would not recommend an actual fix, but let customers waste a lot of money "trying to fix" the problem, leaving this safety hazard in place.

While driving at almost any speed the steering seems to "slip" especially when turning left, however this also occurs when turning to the right.this on a couple of occasions has almost got me in an accident.dealer does not seem to either find or recognize that the problem exists.

Intermittently steering wheel becomes loose, and it will steer either to the left or to the right.the dealer has been notified.

My dashboard became brittle, and falls apart if you touch it!also my transmission has had to be rebuilt three times. But im only worried about my dash.

Tailgate straps snapped in half while unloading 4wheeler while using a ramp.

Tailgate support cable rusted through and broke.

While drivingsteering would be free wheeling(oversteering) when making turns. Had lost control of vehcle and hit a post. Managed to take vehicle to dealership, andwas informed by the mechanic that therewas a defective sensor insteering.

Gas pedal sticksall the time when you first step on pedal. You then accelerate in a jerky manner as you have to press it hard to get it to unstick!!! also dos it on our 2001 grand prix and my fathers 1999 chevroletpickup.

The contact owns a 1998 gmc sierra 1500. The contact stated that the windshield wipers would fail sporadically. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 103,000 and the current mileage was 107,000.

I own a 1998 gmc sierra and the windshield wipers work only part of the time. Upon searching the internet it seems to be a widespread problem among these vehicles, but the recall doesn't include this year even though the circuit board is the same .

The switch for the remote control outside mirrors caught fire.ruining the switch, associated harness and the door panel.i have discussed this with my dealer quoting nhtsa campaign number 03v093000.he refuses to honor the recall saying my vin was not included in the recall.i hope this complaint will help getting my vehicle included in the recall.

The contact owns a 1998 gmc sierra 1500. The contact stated that the windshield wipers would stop working sporadically. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure who did not offer any assistance. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage 90,000 and the current mileage is 139,000.updated 10/21/11 the wiper was repaired at a cost of $ 311.00. Update 10/26/11

On a 1998 gmc sierra 1/2 ton pickup. Faulty windshield wiper control board. Solder joints pn control board will crack causing wipers to fail at random times, creating an unsafe situation when in traffic. Tapping or jerking on the wipers will temporarily reactivate them.this is a known issue by gm for over 15 years and recalls have been made on previous vehicles, but are not offered on vehicles after 1997.

Windshield wipers will not always work. When raining they go off or stall. Pulling on wippers manually will retart them occationaly.

Windshield wipers would quit while using them while raining or not. It's lucky i have rainx in my wiper fluid and on the wipers which gave me enough visibility to see, but this could be a very hazardous situation.

Windshield wipers will stop working during intermittent setting with out warning. Sometimes the wipers will not turn off. Sometimes the wipers will stop and the blades will be in the line of sight causing a major distraction.

Windshield wipers fail to work intermittently, obviously i only attempt to use my wipers when it is raining. The last time i was driving in heavy rain on the interstate. I managed to get to the shoulder without incedent. This is a very dangerous situation.

Windshield wipers would come on or go off on their own whether it would be raining or not. Would lift hood and touch wiring harness, and windshield wipers would work fine for a while. This would cause a great deal of havoc ondriver's visibility.
