Consumer was involved in an accident and the air bags did not deploy, front end sustained significant damage, consumer states it is obvious that the impact was higher than what the impact sensors needed for air bags to deploy, one person was injured in the accident.

Due to the defective airbag sensorairbag light stayed on while driving, indicating a problem with the airbag system, which may deploy unexpectedly or won't deploy in event of a crash and won't protectoccupant.please provide further information.

While driving airbags deployed suddenly and unexpectedlywhenvehicle hit apothole, resulting in minor injuries. Dealer has inspectedvehicle, and felt that gmcwas not liable for the incident.

Going 65mph south bound; tractor north bound; front rear tire bolts came off; tire came off tractor & hit van on bumper; air bags did not deploy upon impact; vehicle filled up w/white cloud that smelled; seat belts & abs worked fine.

The brake reservoir had a hole in it causing the consumer to rear end another vehicle, violent deployment of the drivers side air bag broke drivers hand.nlm

Air bag failure.

1997 gmc safaricomplete power failure which negates power steering, power brakes, and is a danger to me and my family! i never know when the power will go out. It has gone out on at least 10 occasions since i purchased the vehicle. Also, the transmission "slams" into gear on occasion at no specific interval. There can be several days seperating the incidents; no logical pattern. I have taken the vehicle to martin cadillac in los angeles at least 4 times to have these problems fixed and so far they have been unable to duplicate the problems and make the fix.

Battery that came with the vehicle is leaking acid from the postive power post which is melting paint from the inner fender, and possibly damaging lines underneath battery.vehicle repaired at owner's cost, gm to reimburse.*ml

Battery failed.

The battery cable line hanging over the the top of the transmission cooling line going into the intake/outtake maniford, which cut it in half.the transmission caught on fire.contacted the dealer.

Alternator failed twice.

Ongoing problems with defective components on consumer's two vans.each van has had problems with it's transmission, alternator, motors for door and windows, catalytic converter, fuel pump, oxygen sensors and windshield wiper motor.*lathe consumer has two gmc safari's both 1997 models.their vin's are [xxx] and [xxx].information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

At 90000 miles, windshield wipers on my 97 gmc safari suddenly started to fail while driving in the rain.10 minutes later they might work for a while. This started happening regularly. I had several near accidents on the freeways of los angeles as a result. I was told by one web forum it was faulty leads due to wire harness stress. I have not been able to afford to fix the problem and now avoid the freeways in the rain.

A malfunctioning wiring harness causing loss of all instrumentpanel lights. Also, turn signal becameinoperative, consumer has contacteddealer. Dealer has pulled all types of wires out of the engine compartment, problem still occurs.*ml

While driving consumer smelled smoke coming from the vents, and underneath hood from the windshield.consumer pulled over, lifted up the hood, andvehicle caught on fire.consumer was able to extinguishe the fire.consumer had the vehicle towed to the dealer for inspection.

All the gauges do not work due to electrical problems.dealer cannot determine the cause of the problem. Previously, dealer replaced gas gauge. Also, transmissin malfunctioned.

September 1, 1999:ac problem (not cooling) repaired under warranty.november 3, 1999:left drivers door window motor replaced under warranty (not passenger side as documented on the invoice).january 31, 2003:i wrote to gmc customer service via email, detailing some problems that had developed with my van.i complained that the drivers window motor was intermittent at best. I mentioned was the windshield wipers worked erratically.my low setting on the ac fan was inoperable, and eventually all 3 levels stopped.i had been living with it for over a year, because i am a single mom, work full time and couldnt afford to be without my transportation.the reply i got was that my van was too old, and things break.three months later, i received a recall campaign in the mail for the windshield wiper motor.may 8, 2003:i took my van into the closest gmc dealer to have my drivers window motor ($329.38) and the ac resistor replaced ($103.24), and perform the campaign to replace the windshield motor.july 22, 2003:returned to gmc dealer to repair ac problem (ac blows from defroster and not from vents) that developed may 10, 2003.($132.50)september 24, 2003:returned to gmc dealer for same ac problem that returned july 30, 2003.that van was in the service department all day, and was never repaired.i had to have my car for work and could not leave it.needless to say, i was very unhappy with them.i had been unable to leave the van again until just recently, choosing instead to live with the problem until such time i could afford to be without the car for a day.april 20, 2004:returned to gmc dealer for ac problem.was told the hose was broken in a different place than before.(169.24). During the drive home, the ac problem returned.april 29, 2004:van wont start due to a dead battery.i replaced the battery, and still same problem returns.now i have an electrical problem somewhere that is killing my battery, and i cant find it.

A/c/heating: rear heat went out and had to be rewired engine: the water pump went out and had to replace it, that was covered by warranty. But still has a front oil leak some where in the front. Other: i heard a grinding noise while going down the road i took it in to the dealer i bought it from and they looked it over and said nothing was wrong. Shortly after warranty ran out the transfer case went out so we had a used one put in and it only lasted four months now it sits in the garage there should be something to do about the transfer case they should last longer.brakes: been having trouble with the abs brakes since we bought it took it in to a dealer and they said nothing was wrong with it. I ended up doing the brakes and found they had cracked pads causing the noise in the brakes. Found out that all wheel drive is not what it is made out to be, i have had a lot of issues with this 1997 gmc safari all wheel drive van.

Consumer disappointed in some of the problems he had with the chassis and other auxiliary systems.(nar)*phtransmission, engine,ac/ heater, gas gauge, windshield wiper motor, electric window.

Starting to back out of driveway heard a loud noise, the engine pulley popped off which effected the brakes and steering.

Oil circulation tube (part # 15996928) has ruptured, causing oil to spill all over engine.this failure also resulted in engine damage that could not be fixed therefore the engine needed to be replaced.

Vehicle stalls at a slow speed or whenapplying accelerator pedal from a stop position. Vehicle been in/out of dealer shop on 12 occasions, andattwo different dealers.problem isstill unresolved. Rotors repaired/out of round, master power window switch failed, headlamp switch replaced. *ml

Vehicle lost steering and brakes (belt did not brake and fluid ok)

Intermittently when the vehicle is accelerating it loses power.thedealer has inspected the vehicle and could not duplicate the problem.

Vehicle will stop/it completely dies intermittenly without warning.dealer claims cannot determine cause of defect.please provide further information.

Possible engine failure causes the engine light to illuminate, the engine to loose power, gauges to act erratically and the vehicle to buck and vibrate.nlm

Engine has rough idle/check engine light previously, dealer performed engine tune-up.next problem of rough engine/check engine light, still waiting from dealer as to the cause.tsb 00-06-04-003 has been issued concerning this problem, the question is, this should be a recall item, since this is a safety hazard while travelling at freeway speeds.

The throttle body on our 1997 gmc safari came apart sending pieces into the engine and failing in a wide open throttle condition that was not controllable by the driver.this occurred when the driver entered the freeway and the car accelerated through 85 miles per hour without any depression of the accelertor.the driver had to continuously apply brake pressure to keep speed somewhat under control.the only means to control the engine was to turn it off.

Emission system problem.yh

Vehicle makes rattling noise.muffler and catalytic converter replaced but noise still exists.

When vehicle is stopped, a loud popping noise comes from exhaust system.

Catalytic converter failed.

The honeycomb catalyst material is broken and can be heard to be rattling around within the catalytic converter.the catalyst within the housing will further deteriorate, break apart, and migrate into the muffler.since the muffler is not shielded as well as the catalytic converter, this presents a very real fire hazard.

The fuel gauge was inoperative. The cause of the problem was undetermined.

The baffle on the throttle body came loose, causing the throttle to remain wide open.this was a very dangerous situation and could have resulted in a serious accident.

While driving 40 mphengine stalled. Dealer replaced fuel pump. On july 1 while driving 50 mphengine stalled again. Fuel pump needed to be replaced again.

Fuel leak in safari supplied fuel line that goes to the generator.

Smelled gasoline. Checked for leaks. Found gasoline leaking from the fitting where the supply line transitions form a plastic hose that originates at the fuel pump to the 3/8 inch steel fuel line. This leak was very close to the hot exhaust muffler. This is obviously a very dangerous situation and should prompt a recall.

My fuel guage shows full regardless how much fuel is in the tank, rear door handle broke this is third gmc with this problem, sliding door does not work properly,

This problem rless than 30 days after purchasing the van, it was supposed to have been fixed at the original dealership 12k ago, but this problem has reocurred. In addition, have had a power window motor go out, blower fan burn up, transmission fluid leaks after being serviced by dealership and lastly a fuel gauge that refuses to work.

Transmission malfunctioning since december 1997, resulted in its failure. Yh

Transmission over-pressurized and forced fluid out of the dip stick tube onto the engine and exhaust causing a large amount of smoke and creating a fire hazard.after rebuilding the transmission at my expense the same problem has occured 4 more times.the dealer has been very accomodating at trying to remedy this ongoing problem but has not been able to cure it.

I have repeatly taken this car to a gm dealer for the problem. They charged me twice and finally admitted they could not find problem. Therefore, it left me no choice but to go to any independent transmission dealer, who advised me this is a ongoing gmc problem due to poor techancial design. Gm realizes this problem, yet has turned me down for reinbursement due to my having it fixed by independent. All my service work had been previously done by dealer. Dealer told me he was working with gm techs but could not find problem, yet the independent immediately knew of this problem and has serviced over 200 gm cars with same problem..gmc supervisor tiffany baker denied payment.valve body design problem. Converter slips when hot and driven over 50 miles. I have spent over $600.00 on this problem and feel gm is responsible for the repair and should reimburse me.

When starting up from park, the engine roars and looses power, sometimes only for a short distance but sometimes 500 to 600 feet.also after starting up from a stopped position, the rear of the van gives off a very loud thud and van lurches at the same time as if someone rearended the vehicle.sometimes, the van after being just started (still in park and not touching the brake or anything other than starting the engine) and sitting for a short while, the van will have a loud thud from the rear of the van and you can also feel movement at the same time.

97 safari consistently sets p1870 code, transmission slips when warmed up.the vehicle shift extremely hard (actually slip)1st-2nd-3rd.hard enough a significant chance of u-joint breakage, uncontrolled tire spinning on ice/slick roads, (i have experienced),whiplash type experience under moderate acceleration.this sudden shift also attributed to causing interior components such as center console to shake loose.several instances have caused items in center column cup holder to fall out and spill.gm has tsb on record and recognizes this affects 96-02 gm vehicles with the 4l60e trans(vans, suv's, rear wheel drive cars and front wheel drive cars with similar transmission).gm recognizes in their tsb of an ineffective valve body and that this is a "possible" problem and goes on to state it was corrected in late '02 mfg vehicles and there are no "recalls".it provides exact information regarding the above problem (tsb says "customer complaint")gm dealers are charging customers "outrageous" figures for trans replace only for the customer to have the same problem as soon as 10k miles as the new trans is still the "old" model with the defective valve body.gm further acknowledges that a replacement trans is not necessary(unless "proven" failure)gm further acknowledges the code p1870 in a gm stc class (#17040.01), how to determine the fault even though a simple tsb exists for this.several tsb's as reference (there are more)#01-07-30-012,020 #99-07-30-005 #77-71-75#02-07-30-001,030,042.simply searching the web for p1870 will result in confirmation of said complaint.

Transmission jerks between first/ second and third gears.with no prior warning engine will started up when the vehicle is warmed up. Consumer took vehicle to the dealership.

The transmission failed and required replacement. *mjs

Additionally, upon repair of failed powertrain transmission and after spekaing to another safari owner who had similair faiure, it is also apparnet that the heat sensor to the transmission failed to evoke the check engine light etc.. But the failure code was stored into the onboard computer system. This potentially hazardous situation may be occurring more frequently. I do not have any way of obtaining any "failure" data so that i can run some regression analysis. But if i can just pick up the phone and call another owner who is selling the same year safari and within 5minutes share with me the same problems.well, just do the math! let me know what i can do. Thank you.

Gears can be shifted withoutbrake pedal being depressed. Consumer realized it after child shifted gears while engine was idling. Dealer has been contacted. Please provide further details.

Seat belt failure.

The seat belts are designed very short. *mjs

My daughter was attempting to hook her seatbelt before we left a parking lot and the buckle literally fell apart in her hand.this was a rear belt with no doors nearby so it had not been damaged in any way prior to its failure.our concern is that had we been in an accident it would not have protected our child.the dealer says that we are responsible for the cost of the replacement as well.

Safety belt in back of vehicle does not latch. Had repaired once.also, seat latchbroke.

Seatbelts fail to retract.

The seat belt on the passenger's sidewill not pull out of the retractor. The dealer is aware of the problem. Part was ordered to correct seat belt problem. Consumer also experiencing a problem with sticking of the accelerator pedal. Please describe details.

Brakes fail at speeds less than 5 mph

This van belongs to my mother.my sister was driving the day of the accident.she is 60 yrs of age and a very good driver.her description: "just pulling away from one light & coming up to another.wasn't going more than 20 mph.step on the brakes & they weren't there."the accident caused about $500 in damage to the honda auto that was struck, and similar light damage to the bumper of the safari.i inspected system and found no leaks, and concluded that master cylinder may be failing, so i replaced it.after that repair, had excellent pedal.i borrowed the van a few days later, and while driving it, i experienced the same no brake condition 3 times, once which left the front end out into an intersection (luckily, no collision).i recognized that the anti-lock braking system was erroneously keeping the front brakes from applying, and that was what caused the no brake condition.a gm mechanic advised me to pull the abs fuse.i did so, and now the van has great brakes, every time.i have done the same to another family vehicle also equipped with this dangerous system; i'm not waiting until it causes another accident.this condition screams for your attention.no one was hurt by this particular failure incident (except financially), but it is just a matter of time before someone ends up gliding into a busy intersection, or over a crosswalk, and does cause a death or two.please have all these dangerous abs vehicles recalled, and have these safety features-turned-safety hazards defeated, before someone does become a victim.

No brakes, no power steering.is such catastrophic failure common at 40.832 miles?

The consumer stated that the brakes failed causing the vehicle to hit a parked vehicle.the vehicle was towed to a mecahnics garage where they found that all the mechanical linkages and hydraulics were intact, however the abs interface on the computer board was faulty, thereby disabling the entire braking system.*scc

While driving 55 mph consumer applied the brakes and pedal went to the floor. This caused aloss of braking power.consumer pumped the brakes three or more times and was able to maintain control of the vehicle. Thendrove it to the dealer for inspection, but mechanic was not able to resolve the problem.

Idler arms should not go bad at 36k miles. The dealer where we purchased has been sold. The problem was discovered when we took the vehicle for pa state inspection (annual). Obviously the idler arms did not go bad from mile 36000 to 36900. We are still within the three years and only over the mileage by 900 miles. But the dealer we took it to would not cover the problem, and charged$525.44 to replace front brakes and idler arms.

Anti-lock brakes failed.

Hydraulic pump failed, there was no steering or brakes. Consumer totalled van.

Abs braking system malfunctioned, causing the wheels to lock up and the vehicle to skid, which may have resulted in a crash.please provide further information.

Antilock brakes fail when coming to a complete stop. The antilock system starts to function and then at about 2 mph the pedal goes down completelyto the floor. You could only regain braking ability if you took your foot off the brakes while the abs system reset itself.i took the vehicle to the dealer for repairs and the left front hub bearing assembly (part cost $864) was replaced. The dealer's service invoice indicated a test drive found the left front abs sensor "dropping out" and "tested circuit sensor open". The service advisor said that the speed sensor was an integral part of the front hub bearing assembly.the dealer service invoice no. Is gccs56017. I have the hub at my home address.

While driving steering system malfunctioned, and the vehicle experienced no braking ability. Driver had to apply the emergency parking brake in order to stop the vehicle.currently, vehicle at the dealer.please provide further information.

Idler arms that position steering tie rod were extremely loose.this allowed loss of steering control when applying brakes rapidly.also resulted in violent side-to-side shimmy when applying brakes or when driving on grooved highway surfaces.close inspection of idler arms revealed that bushings were extremely worn.idler arms (gm part number 26018165) had been regularly lubricated, yet appeared dry and dirty around bushing.replacement part procured from gm dealer (part number 12471302) was a different design, with grease fitting on side of arm, with an extended bushing surface.this type of part should normally last the life of the vehicle if properly maintained.my failure occurred at about 40,000 miles.dealer states that a service bulletin had been issued, yet no recall or owner notification of problem, despite obvious safety hazard inherent in a loss of control.

Intermittently windshield wipers will not work when turned on.dealerwas notified, and stated it was not a common problem.

Windshield wiper motor began to perform erratic, now wiper system does not work at all.please describe details.

Since last november, have noted unfortunatley when it start to rain that the windsheild wipers don't always activate when they are turned on.this creates a safety hazard when the car is in motion and there is no way to clear the windshield.the problem can be rectified by getting out of the van, opening the hood and pressing the wire conections together.however, that does not guarantee that the wipers will continue to operate.all of the electrical contacts have power amd the plug connection is tight and does not appear to loosen.thought it might be just my problem, but a neighbor who owns a 94 suburban states he has the same problem.i just contacted the dealer to determine if there was a recall on this and they said no.have asked that the zone rep give me a call.

Understand gmc is aware of motor/circuit controlwindshied failure(what causes wipers not to work) because at the dealer they said gmc had issue a replacement kit but since there was no recall on it i had to pay around $300 for it.i think gmc should go ahead a pay for it since they know is a problem.
