The contact owns a 2001 gmc jimmy. While driving 65 mph, the brakes failed to respond without warning and the contact crashed into the preceding vehicle. The air bags failed to deploy. There were no injuries and a police report was not filed. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and the entire front end was replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 100,000.updated 06/02/2017
Front driver side door hinges unsafe design replace them 38 times no kidding. Airbag light has been on not blinking steady on for 5 years. Abs kicks in on dry road when turning sometimes. And yes all new hubs are on it. Other than these things the car is bullet proof and love it.
While driving at 45 mphvehicle went off the road and crashed into a tree head-on but none of the air bags deployed.
While traveling on highway another vehicle was in front of consumer's vehicle.to avoid vehicle, consumer pulled over to the shoulder, hit an enbankment, and went into a ditch. Upon impact, dual airbags didn't go off.consumer sustained minor injuries.
Gmc never done a investigation on vehicle in site only by phone.this was a frontal accident an neither airbag deployed.
Dt: contact statesair bags did not deploy during a front end collision.contactwas driving approximately 30-40 mph.
The vehicle was involved in a frontal collision.the vehicle flipped over and landed on its roof, and none of the air bags deployed. *nlm ph
The contact owns a 2001 gmc jimmy. While examining the vehicle, she noticed that the rear brake lights were inoperable. The vehicle was taken to a local mechanic who stated that the multi-function switch needed to be replaced. There were no prior warnings. The current and failure mileages were 135,000.updated 05/12/10the consumer stated there was smoke coming from the steering column and the turn signals were inoperative.updated 05/17/10.
Dt*: the contact stated while driving 30 mph on normal road conditions, smoke started coming out of the steering column.no warning lights were illuminated.the vehicle was pulled over and the engine was turned off, however it kept running and the engine warning light illuminated.all the exterior lights failed except the head lights.the dealer appointed the vehicle for inspection on october 18th 2006.the manufacturer was contacted who promised to call back october 19th (didnt call back) after the results of the dealership inspection had been delivered to them.the contact expressed concern because the safety risk involved in this electrical failure should be the manufacturer's responsibility.updated 11/9/2006 -
While driving on highway or up hill rpm dropped, and loss of power, service engine light comes on and stays on. Replaced distributor cap and rotor button, helped for one day then happened again.
While driving on interstate smoke started coming out from the steering wheel and i smelled something burning, i pulled over to make sure the vehicle was not going to start on fire, and found the bottom brake lights were not working but the top center brake light was working. After getting home i researched and found that my gmc vin# had been included in a recall. But what was replaced and when it was replaced i do not know. It only stated that my vin # was included, and that no other recalls were in affect at this time. So according to gmc web site there were 2 different recalls for this issue and 3 different parts could be the problem. 1- the brake switch, 2- the multifunction switch and 3- the flasher switch, and to determine which part is the faulty one you have to take it to a mechanic then pay him in this instance between 300.00 to 400.00 (which i have not done yet do to i can not afford it) for the new part and his time to replace it. So how can a car manufacturer only have to be responsible for fixing the issue only 1 time when apparently the replacement parts are not any better or redesigned to be better than the original part? i feel that gm or any other car manufacturer should have to replace for free any recalled part for the life of the vehicle. If they would fix the problem the first time it would only have to be fixed 1 time, and would never be an issue again.(and i would not be using my time to file this safety complaint). Better yet how about better engineering and quality control and testing to eliminate recalls all together.
My son asked me if i could tell what was making a clicking sound inside the 2001 gmc jimmy.when checking for turn signals, lights, etc, i noticed the brake lights were not working. We have discovered that what least when the clicking noise is heard, there are no brake lights. Other times they work.davis stanley dealershipsaid all recalls had been fixed.if the recalls were fixed, the replacements apparently have the same problem as the originals. I really do not like the idea that my granddaughter is being driven around in a car that may or may not have brake lights because of a safety engineering problem that gm only had to worry about repairing once even though the same problem happens again after the original repair. Is there a site that will tell who andwhen the recalls were fixed.thanks
I purchased our 2001 jimmy on 2/05/01 (new).we experienced the first of 7 electrical system failures on 10/12/01.on 10/12/01 the brake light switch failed and was replaced.on each of the three following dates; 7/26/02, 6/18/03 and 7/02/03 the ignition switch was replaced after the vehicle failed to start or stopped running during operation.it was towed to a gmc dealer on each of those occasions.on 8/08/03 the vehicle again would not start and was towed to the dealer. We were told the problem this time was the battery.on 8/23/03 the fuse block was replaced after the vehicle stopped running during operation.again towed to a dealer. My vehicle has two problems that i am aware of. There's heat coming from the floor heater while the heater is off, and it burns my feet.the other problem is that when i activate my left/right blinker my day lights go out, and sometimes when i'm driving my day lights are not activated. I have to play with my blinkers to make then come on. My car is still under warranty, but the dealership where i purchased this vehicle refuses to fix either problem. They told me that my car is designed this way. *la

Was told by state farm this was a design defect.the oil lines leak from the enginedown to the filter that is on the front bumper instead of on the engine.
I purchased a used 2001 gmc jimmy from performance (lemon dealer) pontiac in syracuse n.y..the vehicle had 36,000 miles on it and 7 months later (purchased 6/03) the engine is shot.it had a leak through either a head gasket or head/block and antifreeze had been leaking into the engine oil.my vehicle now needs another engine or a complete rebuild!
The contact owns a 2001 gmc jimmy.the contact noticed that the on-board diagnostic system warning indicator would consistently illuminate on the instrument panel.the vehicle frequently misfired, which caused it to be inoperable.the dealer stated that he needed to replace the scpi fuel injector and the mass air flow sensors at the cost of $1,150.he is in the process of having the vehicle repaired.he called the manufacturer in reference to a voluntary recall for the state of california for 1996 to 2001 suv's, but was not provided any assistance because the recall was not applicable for his state.the current and failure mileages were 72,000.
Vehicle has non-engaging transmission as at times it will not shift though it is an automatic and sometimes it starts out in 2nd and then drops down to 1st.service engine soon light illuminated on 3 occasions as there were emissions problems.front end makes constant popping noise.problem has been lubed on 3 or more occasions as well as coil springs have been replaced and lubed.brakes went completely out while trying to stop at an intersection.there was a rupture in the brake booster.
Service engine light has come on a total of 7 times in 8 weeks (all with in 2 months).i was told by dealer secondary air pump was bad.part was replaced a number of times.i called gm's customer assistance center.they offered no help other than to call a gmc dealer and have them take a look.
Really bad exhaust smell. Not eggs. Not your standard stink. Bad smell since 6 months after purchase in 2001.keeps the following traffic way behind me. Had oxygen sensor checked many times. But i think its the cat. Converter.everytime i take it in for service, i request a fix. Still not fixed. Service center can't dup problem, why?i smell it !!also flux gas gauge movement in park.also no horn.had fixed once in summer 2005, and 5 months later it doesn't work again.the fuse is fine.could have used it the other day.:-(
There have been a number of recalls for the 2001 gmc jimmy, mainly recall #01073a & b stating ext. Lighting brake switch/ no rear brake lights. I'm told that the service was apparently completed on my vehicle in 2002, but another recall came out in 2008 stating the same problem. Gm canada is refusing to do the necessary recall on my truck stating that it was previously completed and that my vehicle is over a decade old, so it's my problem. I won't be purchasing another gmc in the future due to this issue. My rear brake lights stop working and its the switch that needs replacing. Thanks for nothing gm! you just lost a long term customer over a recall part. Dec 2001 - recall #01v364000may 2008 - recall #01v364 / 01073b

Nhtsa campaign #01v364000 addressed a problem with the brake lights on my vehicle.my vehicle received the service specified by the recall on 4-30-02.now my vehicle has the condition (failure of the right and left brake lights but not the center brake light) which led to the recall.my position is that the failure is due to a known design flaw which was addressed in a recall.the recall repair did not remedy the problem as evidenced by the current failure.the dealers position is that they did the recall service and are no longer responsible.

Dt:2001 gmc jimmy, faulty brake lights. The brake lights failed to operate, causingconsumer's vehicleto be rear end, later the consumer found the brake lights had been recalled.manufacturerhad not informed the consumer.the consumer was the original owner.manufacturer fixed the brake light problem, butwould not rememberise the consumer for the other damage caused by the faulty brake lights.
The multi-function switchdeveloped an open circuit condition that resulted in the stop lamps and the rear hazard lamps becoming inoperative.this occurred because the dealership failed to replace the hazard switch carrier as stated in recall 01v364000. They only inspected the part and closed the campaign. Currently, the defect occurred they charged to consumer to replaced the part due to the campaign being closed.
I was pulled over by a police and given a ticket for no brakes lights. I knew that i had checked my brake lights periodically and they had worked. Took it in to be check out and found that the multi-function switch was not operating correctly. My mechanic stated that in the last 6 months that he replaced several of these. I called gmc and spoke with a gentleman and told him that i just paid $394 for this part and he stated that it was recalled and to send my receipts and i could get reimbursed. Now i got a denial letter stating that they are not going to give me my refund and i am very upset. $400 is a whole paycheck to me.

2001 gmc envoy - gas tank neck leaking at grommet. Gm does not offer a fix. The cost of replacing tank with labor is an absurd $600-$800 dollars. This should be cause for recall of all similar models.

Made trip to work from atlanta metro north i-285 south below airport (37 miles). Some road debris must have punctured a hole in thermoplastic fuel tank leading edge. Smelled fuel at work and tightened cap. Parked on hill at work with less than 1/2 tank. After lunch with a co-worker discovered fuel leaking. Vehicle towed home. No luck with gm customer service. Removed tank that week-end. After discussions with composite m&p engineer and distributor began tests on several repairs using a smaller plastic tank.placed repair on fuel tank following week-end using aircraft sealant, 8 fiber glass plies, and final coat of epoxy resin. Conducting sloshing tests on smaller tank which only has sealant over 9 holes. No leaks at 7500 cycles.i consider gmc jimmy tank as temporary repaired until more tests are conducted. Digital pictures available and may be emailed. Incident resulted in an unsafe condition and could have led to fatalities and casualty losses people might not have discovered since it is difficult to determine root cause after a large fuel fire. This incident although somewhat unusual happens occasionally to plastic tanks. I spoke to several people in my office aware of like situations. I am disappointed gm did not use a shield to protect the leading edge as a means to protect the tank from puncture. The fuel tank remains on the vehicle. It is expensive to replace since tank has bonded fittings and no other tanks are available. Its a design defect. No doubt mfgr may have met minimum fmcsa part 393 drop requirements yet requirement is not adequate to resist puncture loads from road debris as shown this instance. Geico ins advised it is rare but it does happen. As structural engineer involved in safety decisions i am appalled at decision not to protect tank better. A small thin steel sheet.
Fuel gauge fluctuates between emty and full while in park or neutral, can't depend on fuel gage for ture information.
Fuel gauge functions erratically. Marks full tank of gas and somewhere in the mid-full point the gauge will read what ever it wants (empty, 1/4, full...etc.).
Regardless of how much fuel (i.e. Full) the gas gauge will frequently jump down to empty and low fuel light come on. This happens in drive and neutral on a daily basis. Constantly jumping back and forth. Sometimes will stay on empty when full
Intermittent issue with the dome lights, they will turn on by themselves while driving and the only way to shut them off is push the dome override button.alarm system has also gone off by itself with no one near the vehicle or trying to enter the vehicle.the cigarette lighter and the two multipurpose plugs work intermittently.intermittent wipers sometimes work and other times may stop while in use.it appears there is a short somewhere in the sytem causing these issues.

Abs module needs to be repaired at estimated 1200.00 and the pedal brake control and mechanism at 160.00 not including labor. This is ridiculous for a 2001 and have lots of others with similar problems.
Lost 2nd gear and reverse. Feels like a broken gear. 56k miles, so far gm is resistant to doing anything. I have owned many gms, this is probably the last.

When i got to work on tuesday morning, went to park car in space, put in reverse, clunk, no reverse, can't get out of first gear. I had to have my car towed 30 miles each way to my mechanic. Turns out the planetary gear went, need a new transmission, costing over $3000.00. After doing some research on the internet i see there are thousands of complaints on something called the sunshell gear 4160e that seems to have been a problem on many of gmc passenger cars and light duty trucks. I even came across a service bulletin they put out about the problem, but never any recall on such a problem. I have a 2001 gmc jimmy. The service bulletin runs in autos from 1993-2005. Now, i wonder, why no recall on such a huge problem. I mean it's the most costly thing to repair and happens without any warning at all. I would suggest this be looked into, i mean now i get a new transmission from gmc which i'm sure the problem is solved, but how many people have shelled out big bucks to fix this problem and mostly at less than 100,000 miles on their vehicles. Tranny's should last longer than that. I am sure i'm not the only complaint received on this subject from what i saw in my research. If it's a defect, recall it and fix it. We, as consumers work hard to have a vehicle we can rely on and to have a major problem like this happen is really not right. Obviously gmc is aware there was a problem for some time now. Thank you for your attention to this matter.
From july of 2002 until august 9, 2003 the following problems have occurred with my 2001 gmc jimmy - which now has 46,000 miles registered:7/02: while driving vehicle slips from 2wd t o 4-wd low. 2001 gmc jimmy sle 47k milesautomatic transmission already needs to be replaced.i am told that their is a seal that is leaking causing the vehicle to hesitate accelaration in first gear when cold.
Abs wheel speed sensor design does not provide an adequate seal with the unitized hub allowing moisture to cause a premature failure of the bearing on a 2001 gmc jimmy.
Abs and 4 wheel drive was not working right took to dealer and they found right front wheel bearing was real bad they said that might be causing the problem and that it would cost 425.00 dollars to fix have not repaired yet vehicle has 63135 miles on now but when it was inspected it had 55512 on it and the garage said there was some play in the front but thought it was idler are play which was in limits for pa now i don't knoe about that know
Vehicle has a loss of power when accelerating. Vehicle doesn't respond immediately whenthrottle is applied. Dealer determined that problem was due toclutch fan. Dealer was aware of problem, but couldn't duplicate to find asolution. Existing problem has progressed since a year. Please provide more information.

Brake failure while driving, vehicle was in motion. Brake line corrosion caused front brakes to fail on 11/30/2015no accident resulted from the failure.
I would like to file a complaint about the abs brake sensor not working. From online search this is a common problem with the 2001 gmc jimmy and no recall has been issued. I have had this issue for the past year that the abs lights on the dash will come sometimes but at other times it will be off. I have been told the sensor is bad and it would cost over $700.00 to fix. Since this is a big issue i wish you would look into this and have gm issue a recall.
Abs module needs to be repaired at estimated 1200.00 and the pedal brake control and mechanism at 160.00 not including labor. This is ridiculous for a 2001 and have lots of others with similar problems.
Dt:the consumer purchased her vehicle in 2001 and has already had to replace the rear brakes.the dealer had to replace the entire braking system because the brakes pads were worn.the consumer was told to bring the vehicle back in about 3000 miles for a recheck. In sept. 2004 she took the vehicle into firestone for an oil change.they checked the brakes and told the consumer that everything was rusted and needed to be replaced. The rear brakes were replaced in march 2005.
The abs system activated while stopping normally at less then 5 mph.the brake pedal becameso hard it washard to stop.
Dt: the contact states the absengaged at low speeds. Causing extended stopping distances during low-speed braking applications. The vehicle has been to a repair shop oncefor inspection. Although an abs problem was recognized no repairs were made. The contactexperienced this problem for the past year and a half.
Problems with my 2001 gmc jimmy have been numerous including ignition switch, wheel bearings, clanking noise, roaring noise, windshield wiper failure, windshield wiper hose failure, battery, a/c, and so on.currently, my vehicle clanks approximately 15 minutes after turning off the engine and my a/c does not work properly at all times.dealership consistently says "there's nothing wrong" however i have had the vehicle for 2+ years and i know my car.*la
Upon applying brakes there was a grinding noise and vehicle would not stop.consumer had to pull into another lane to avoid hitting another car. Cause unknown.please provide any further information.
Consumerhas had to replace brake pads and rotors several times.vehicle checked by dealer, who advised consumer that rotors were defective and being warped.consumer very concerned about brake effectiveness while driving vehicle.
Rough braking that became worse to the point where vehicle control was questionable. Gmc dealer advised that rotors on all 4 wheels needed to be replaced. Inspection of rotors indicated that significant amounts of metal had broken away from the brake pad contact area on the rotors. This caused the brake pads to then be applied over a washboard type surface which almost eliminated functionality. All pads and rotors were replaced on this gmc jimmy vehicle which only has 38,000 miles. Dealer retained parts and billed $725.

The contact owns a 2001 gmc jimmy. The contact stated that while driving approximately 20-25 mph, the steering wheel seized without warning and caused the contact to lose control of the vehicle, crashing into a garage. The contact sustained injuries to the back and neck. The vehicle was towed to a salvage yard. The manufacturer was contacted and was scheduled to further inspect the vehicle. The failure and current mileage was 149,000.
On highway during heavy rain, vehicle left roadway along slight curve by failing to turn front wheels and hydroplaned straight off pavement.vehicle then left the ground flying downhill, smashed front passenger side bumper into and through 10+ inch tree, spun 90 degrees clockwise before side impacting two 25+ inch trees against driver side door and rear wheel, before coming to a stop (on steep hill held by the trees), totaling the jimmy.top of vehicle had to be cut off to free driver.police originally thought accident was fatality.vehicle had previously experienced failure to turn after braking lightly, like before entering driveways or parking spaces.steering would lock in straight position and car had to be shifted to park and restarted before wheel could be turned again.when taken to well known auto shop for this steering issue before accident, shop stated that problem was located in front passenger side and was then repaired.

I own a 2001 gmc jimmy 2 door, 2wd with 34,000 miles.i had to have replaced the idler arm and tie rod and 4 brand new tires because the idler arm was shot.there are only 34,000 miles on this vehicle, less than the 36,000 mile warranty.gm would not repair it because of the vehicle was more than 3 years old.the auto technician at the tire store was amazed that this vehicle had such a bad problem with tire wear and the idler arm mechanism this early.this cost me $550 to fix.

Also had a lot of trouble with it jumping in to 4x4 low. Had it repaired 4 times. Along with other minor problems. As of 5/14/03 i sold it back to the dealer ,and lost $5000.00 on the deal because of a so called smart buy. Which would of been ok. But because of mileage [51000] i was over from 36000[15000] miles x 20cents a mile, and $2000.00 because i turned it in early .just felt i could not trust the vehicle any more. Walked 5 mi. In dark one night and was towed in 3 times. I liked the vehicle, but it cost me $5000.00 to get rid of it which i can't express in words how un happy that makes me!! i work hard for a living ,5k don't come easy.

I have a 2001 gmc jimmy with 37,000 mainly driven in the winter. I am the original owner of the car. Within the past month i heard a very loud sound in the front. When taken to the dealership was told that the right front wheel bearing was so bad that a few more miles and the tire would have come off. They said the left wasn't any better, but could go another month. I only had enough money that day to fix the right. When i called the customer relations of gm, they told me they would investigate and get back to me. I was later told that they would only repair the left, but that i had to pay for the one only fixed (even though it was the worst), because the car was so old! it is no longer under warranty. They told me the dealership was going to pay for the left repair, but when i called the dealership, they said it was the manufacturer. After investigation, i see that canada ordered a recall for this vehicles wheel bearings failing at 70,000km for jimmys 1998-2001, but no similar recall in the us. Both the dealership and gm told me i was lucky they were paying half. I do not believe wheel bearings should fail at 37,000 miles. I see similar owners complaining of multiple replacements for the same problem.
Front tires developed serious wear patterns (cupping). Original factory wheel balancing placed 3 ounces of weight on front right and 2.75 ounces on front left while the rear tires only required .5 ounces of weight. The tires have been balanced three times by different places and according to the tires experts, the tires "don't spin well". One uniroyal dealer suggested i contact the selling dealer of the car and have him replace the tires. This is not a gmc issue but a uniroyal issue. After rotating the defective front tires to the rear, the rear tires now hum and the ride is terrible. These tires were poorly manufactured and even using heavy weights, cannot be balanced properly. Given the fact that my gmc jimmy has a poor rollover rating, i'm afraid these rear tires will cause a serious accident if not replaced.(tiresize: p23570r15)

At 12,270 miles we had no brake lightstaken to the dealer and he replaced the turn signal and said that was the problem. That was in june. On july 6, 2001 the dash board lights flashed several times lighting all of the guagesshowing that the engine was not running, but it was still running.engine light stayed on.took the vehicle to the dealer who found multiple trans dtc's internal failure replace ignition switch and performed relearn. I am concerned that this vehicle will have more defects, please let me know if others are having the same problem.thank you.
Dt:the consumer stated the 2001 gmc jimmy was losing power while driving.the vehicle speed varied. The vehicle will not accelerate. This has been a problem since 2003. The vehicle has been in the shop eight times for repairs. The dealership couldnot find what the problem was.the dealer test drove, scanned and looked through manuals trying to find thecause ofthe problem. The consumer called the manufacturer, whogave her a card so that she would not have to pay for the expenses.
The cruise control wouldn't go off.
When put in drive and gently giving acceleration with no warning, gas pedal will get stuck, causing vehicle to surge forward. Dealer notified.
Cable failure from dead start. Accelerator went to the floor: runaway truck, halted.

While driving in inclement weather the windshield wipers would come on and off on their own. Driver brought vehicle to the dealer for inspection, andmechanic determined that the windshield wiper motor needed to be replaced.
