Multifunction switchfailure 1999 gmc jimmy.recall on other year(s) 1999 excluded.

Upon starting the vehicle the key would not return from the start position to the run position in the ignition.this led to the starter trying to start the engine continuously with the engine already running until i put the shifter in the drive or reverse position.the engine would not turn off until i took out the fuse for the fuel pump.the starter would not disengage until i took out the fuse for the starter.these fuses are located in the engine compartment.this had to be done with the vehicle in drive and with the parking brakes on.i believe this is related to a problem with the wiring harness that connects the floor shifter to the ignition cylinder lock system.talking to other owners of this model vehicle, several of them have experienced problems with their keys being stuck in the ignition.the vehicle is currently parked with the battery disconnected and the key stuck in the start position until i can get it fixed.

I purchased a 1999 gmc jimmy for my daughter.all through the warranty period, there have been problems that still have not been fixed.the brakes have never worked properly, parts inside the vehicle have fallen off, the antenna has fallen off,the electrical system(heating and cooling) has not worked properly, the outside mirrors and windows have not worked properly, the electrical system has buzzed when the radio is on, there has always been a banging noise underneath the vehicle.the left front hub assembly was replaced-didn't correct the probelm-had it replaced again 2 weeks ago-same condition still exists.they finally found the lower and upper ball joints on the passenger side were coming apart-replaced them-but noise (loud sometimes) is still there.have been taking this vehicle in for repairs since i bought it-have been without the vehicle over 30 days in the warranty perioid.now-after breaking down twice again in the last 2 months (a condition i've been trying to have them fix since 11/01) due to no power when i press on the gas-it's going in again.it is 2 hours one-way to the dealer (silviera, healdsburg, ca) for me.i believe they have been trying-but i think this vehicle is really now, and has always been a lemon.the vehicle has only 50,000 miles on it, and it is not dependable (never has been).after all these times in for service-taking a day off work every time to get it to them, i've had it.my daughter (college student) who i bought the vehicle for (i wanted her to have something reliable for college), now uses my car-so she won't get stuck all the time. I am ready to put the lemon law into effect with this vehicle.

Something keeps draining the battery in vehicle. Has battery replaced3 times. Dealer contacted.

Front upper ball joints breakage causing front wheel to come off and improper aligment-steering, battery problems, front passenger seat recliner handle breakage.

When i try to start the vehicle in cold weather, it has a very hard time starting and when it finally fires up, the stereo resets the time, and automatic tone feature, but the presets are still in tact. Please supply more information regarding the cause and solution.

While driving vehicle losses all gauges and can't get the key out of the ignition. Please provide additional information.

Vehicle shuts off while driving & will not restart. Dealer has been unable to identify the cause. Has replaced ecm & attached a vehicle data recorder in order to hopefully locate the source of trouble. I have been in dangerous situations, traveling at high speeds on busy roadways when the engine failure occurs. I am given no warning, nor am i able to restart the car. I have had the car towed 4 times & i just bought the car a month and a half ago.

Starting from january 13, 2007 ,everytime i turn the ignition off the key cannot be removed from the ignition switch. I have had to jiggle the key, and wait several minutes before the key can be removed. After researching this problem on the internet, i found many others are having/had this problem. Many ways to fix this problem were posted. Finally i found one that works for my truck. At least for now it does. I had to remove a plastic cap under the switch on the steering column, and insert an ink pen pushing against something to get the key to released. This needs to be recalled and fixed before someone dies because they can't remove their key so they can get out of their vehicle, in an emergency situation.

The outside temperature display does not work it reads 0 degrees celsius at all times.

My mother just told me that there is a class action suit at www.dexcoolsettlement.com regarding dexcool coolant corroding the radiator and other parts due to this coolant.according to this complaint, gmc does not admit fault.i have a 1999 jimmy that has 114,000 miles, and in the last month i've had to replace the radiator $1,000.00, water pump $800.00 and now they want me to replace the intake manifold gaskets $700.according to the suit you have to have had this problem within the first seven years of the delivery date.unfortunately i took delivery after the lease was up at 36,000 miles.i purchased it in 2002.is there any recall on this matter so i could be refunded the amount on this defect?

1999 gmc jimmy caught fire under the hood. No one was injured but the vehicle was destroyed in the fire.(ohio traffic crash report)

While driving, consumer heard a loud dragging noise and was later informed that the noise was caused by faulty ball joints, also dealer replaced the front axle shaft to replace the inner tri-pod boot.the passenger front wheel had leanedin at the top, and the engine had an oil leak.the consumer has requested reimbursement for the monies spent on repair.*scc

Vehicle stopped without any reason and was unable to restart it. This is a hazard if it had occurred on a freeway or other fast moving highway. It seems this is a cronic problem with this vehicle as there are several other complaints filed. It is time that gmc determine what causes this problem and corrects it. At this time the vehicle is still at the garage and i don't know what they say wil be the problem.

Vehicle experienced oil leak due to faulty upper and lower cooler lines, serpentine belt was also replaced.

Engine coolant keeps disappearing, causing the engine to overheat.dealership is not able to determine what is causing this problem.*ml

The gas gauge was constantly on full. The tank may be empty but the gauge read full.the dealer stated the fuel pump needed to be replaced.please describe further. We bought a gmc jimmy 3 months ago and 2 weeks ago the bottom of the engine is fried ,,,the dealer said he can't help us ?????

Vehicle shuts off while driving & will not restart. Dealer has been unable to identify the cause. Has replaced ecm & attached a vehicle data recorder in order to hopefully locate the source of trouble. Vehicle cotinously cuts out, causing slow but costly accident.

Date given is the first incident. Engine quits for no apparent reason.it has happened at different speeds and different weather conditions.dealer cannot find reason.contacted gm and they just called the dealer.i am fearful that it will happen on the freeway and will cause an accident and someone will get hurt.dealer says there is nothing they can do because they can't find the reason and they can't replace parts they don't think are broken.

After reaching normal temp., engine will die at random speeds. And requires complete powering down before will restart. This has almost caused many accedents.

Vehicle experienced oil leak due to faulty upper and lower cooler lines, serpentine belt was also replaced.

The engine light illuminated several times, because the air pump froze, the right front wheel bearing, fuel pump, and rear differential bearings were replaced.

1) we were driving from kalamazoo to chicago when the i went to turn on the air conditioner it blew extremely hot air to the point where the dash was too hot to touch. We unplugged the air completely but and even shut the tried to open the vents but it continued to blow hot air we had to keep switching from dash to floor to keep from burning our feet and faces. We try to use the heat now and it blows the same extreme hot air (hotter than a normal heat control) for the winter time. We do not have the 320.00 to replace the climate control panel that everyone is telling us is wrong with it. So we continue to us it sparingly.

Cd player failed.

When i try to start the vehicle in cold weather, it has a very hard time starting and when it finally fires up, the stereo resets the time, and automatic tone feature, but the presets are still in tact. Please supply more information regarding the cause and solution.

While towing there is a loud knocking coming from the rear ended of the vehicle.please furnish additional information dealer is aware of the problem.mr

Datime running lights go out when turn signal is engaged

Multifunction switchfailure 1999 gmc jimmy.recall on other year(s) 1999 excluded.

There are no safety security devices to let consumer know ifinterior doors are open.however, there is a warning light if hatchback is opened. She said that the back passenger side door was open, and she didn't know.

Brake lights become intermittently inoperative.dealer contacted.

Brake lights and the hazard lights were not operating properly.the problem was repaired once by the dealer, but it recurred.

Loss of stop lights and rear hazard lights.this is the third occurrence for this particular vehicle.each time i have had to have the multi-function switch replaced at a cost of $395-439.this defect is addressed in campaign # 01v364000 for 200 and 2001, but not my 1999.all use the same gm part number.

Brake lights and the hazard lights were not operating properly.the problem was repaired once by the dealer, but it recurred.

Daytime running lamps turn off when using signal lights.*la

Daytime running lights go out when turn signals are activated. This goes from a safety feature to an unsafe feature. Why should these daytime running lights go out when your driving down the highway and turn your turn signal on? it seems to me, it defeats it's own purpose.it's very hard for me to accept, that this feature was approved to work in this way.......thank you!

When driving down the road headlights and interior lightsflash on and off which could cause an accident.contacted dealer.

The daytime running lights go off whenever the turn signal is used.when the turn signal is turned off, the daytime running lights turn back on.i consider this a safety defect because to oncoming drivers and also people ahead of you it appears you are signalling them.this is especially pronounced in heavy traffic with many lane changes.here in seattle, this may provoke an act of road rage as to the wrong person this light flashing could be interpreted as a hostile act.

I bought my 1999 gmc jimmy when i was 16, i loved it 4x4 but the transfer case locked up and the engine light came on causing the thing not to read how much gas i have and not allowing it to pass inspection. Vehicle had been intermittently losing power since date of purchase. Consumer contacted dealer, and had fuel injectors replaced. Consumer is still experiencing same problem. Please provide further details.

The fuel tank was replaced after we complained a second time about the inability to fill the tank to capacity without smelling fumes in the garage (oversized 2 car garage with 12 foot ceilings).after the fuel tank was replaced, we experienced no further fumes, but we would like to keep this car for the use ofa new driver and are uncertain whether (1) the repair has been made well; (2) there are otherjimmy suvs with a similar problem.our belief is that a repaired car is often safer than one that has not been repaired.

On july 16th at approximately 3pm we were driving on the pensacola bridge and i ran over something as i had no choice but too. I had 2 friends and there 6month old daughter and my 3 yr old daughter in the vehicle. Not thinking anything was wrong i continued to the airport stayed about and hr with my friends then my daughter and i headed back to niceville. When we arrived at home my husband had to leave for softball so we ran in the house for a few and then left again in the same vehicle. After softball we stopped at the store then proceeded home. Later that night at about 11pm i got up for a glass of water as i opened the bedroom door i could smell gas strongly. I walked through the house and opened the garage door where it was heavily saturated with the smell of gas. I went to get my husband who thought i was crazy after some prodding he went and checked and that was when we discovered the gas tank on our 1999 gmc jimmy was leaking. The next morning he had to be at work at 530 and had no choice but to take the vehicle. When he got home at 6pm wed night we called the dealer we bought it from and they told us to call the service center in ft walton so we did but noone answered. Thurs morning july 18 th i called the preston hood service dept . The vehicle was towed to the service center and i called them to see what the deal ws they said you have a gas leak your gas tank was sliced open by whatever you drove over. I callled general motors to say hey this should not have happend that easy why is there no metal plate covering the gas tank. It should have done damage to my vehicle before it ever got to my gas tank and he was no help he told me if i had not drove over it would not have happend. No kidding. I was trying to tell him it should not have happened that easy and he said you don't even know for sure what you drove over wel l plenty of other cars drove over it too and i am sure it did not split open there gas tank. I wrote them an email and have not heard from .*a

1999 gmc jimmy experiencing problems with the gas tank.*mrthe consumer noticed gas leak coming from the emissions canister by the left rear wheel.the vehicle was tanked to the dealer who explained that the gas tank needed to be replaced.

The contact owns a 1999 gmc jimmy. The contact stated that the fuel gauge failed to display the proper fuel level. The failure recurred multiple times. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for diagnostic testing and stated that the fuel gauge sending unit in the fuel tank needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 110,000. Updated 09/03/15*ljthe consumer stated the vehicle could run out of gas without a warning. Updated 12/8/2015

Living near a salt mine ohio uses salt like crazy i'm fortunate that i do all the work myself rotten brake lines fuel lines that's what happens in the snow belt rot my jimmy is mechanically sound with 190000 miles drive it almost 200 miles a day to and from work unfortunately it will rot to pieces before it dies and i don't think i should have to accept this need to find other ways to get ride of ice on roads in ohio or different alloys to make lines with. A lot of mechanics in the south won't or don't know how to work on corroded parts or some even charge a higher rate.

The contact owns a 1999 gmc jimmy. The contact stated when driving at any speed, the vehicle would stall without warning whenever the fuel tank was less than one quarter full. The failure was recurring. The electric fuel pump was replaced by an authorized dealer but the failure persisted. The vehicle was then taken to an independent mechanic, who replaced the fuel pump three additional times due to the recurring failure. The electric fuel pump was replaced a total of four times but the failure would still recur sporadically.the vehicle would also exhibit a loss of power sporadically after the numerous repairs to the fuel pump. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 34000. The vin was not available.

When under one quarter (1/4) of a tank of fuel the vehicle would stall while decelerating (read: hard braking, braking before a turn) without warning, disabling all powered controls including power steering and power braking. Issue would occasionally resolve itself and then come back at random intervals.

When driving down the road headlights and interior lightsflash on and off which could cause an accident.contacted dealer.

Interior light failed.

The front doors do not stay open when on an incline, such as my driveway.you have to make sure it catches before you get out, but then if you don't get out real slow it will close on you.the catch is not deep enough.i have had my leg slammed in it many times.i never knew there was a place to report it until i came across this site looking for child car seat safety reports.my husband has listened to me complain about it ever since we bought the car.

1-normal care and maintenance of this vehicle.2-the door hinges failed on both front doors, needing expensive replacement.3-both front hub assemblies failed at 85,000 miles, costing $700.00plus to repair. Both failures are unacceptable!

Consumer was traveling about 50mph on the highwayand as she was approaching a gasoline station, she went to pull out of the gasoline parking lot, anddriver's side door swung open.passenger screamed.consumer lost her purse, and also there was no prior warning that door was open.

Front upper ball joints breakage causing front wheel to come off and improper aligment-steering, battery problems, front passenger seat recliner handle breakage.

On monday, april 30,2001, i drove my 1999 gmc jimmy into the driveway of my home.i stopped the car with my foot brake to let my husband get out of the front passenger side.i pushed the button to make the garage door go up so he could get in.he didn't duck far enough and hit the top of his head on the botom of the door.it stunned him and he spun around and back towards the car and slumped over the hood of the car (heavily enough tomake a dent).i put the car in park and got out of the car to help him.i put my back against the car and pushed him up.he seemed ok so i helped him into the house.when i was sure he was fine, i went back out to put the car in the garage.it was still where i left it with the motor running and the door open.i put my right foot up onto the floor of the car as i reached out for the steering wheel to hold onto while i moved the rest of my body into the car.however, before i could do that, the car seemed to jump into reverse. Because the wheels werestill positioned in the same place as they were when i made the right turn into the driveway, the car came towards me quickly.i tried to jump on my left foot far enough away to avoid the car, but t was coming quickly in my direction and kind of collected me inside the door and finally pushed me down onto my bottom and right hip.then my head slammed on the brick pavers.the car was still moving over me and caught my feet under the tire.by now the rear tires had reached the slight culvert at the bottom of the driveway.between that and the shoe that had made a perfect wedge under the tire, the car stopped.my screams brought help to pull me from under the car where i was wedged.i had a trimalleolar fracture of the left ankle, a badly bruised and sprained right leg, two broken ribs, a misplaced pelvis, a hematoma on the head and various other injuries which are reqiring ongoing therapy.

Parking brake failure. Repeated service visits, first three times it was adjusted, this did not help another time i was told i needed calipers (installed). Problem persists. Parking brake fails to hold vehicle from rolling on even the slightest grade.

Drum in hat style parking brake 'wore out' after only about 18 months.the failure occurred incrementally during the period as the pedal gradually had to be depressed further and further to be effective. Dealer replaced only shoes under warranty.one year later, after the same gradual decline in performance mentioned above, the parking brake lost functionality again.dealer claimed neglect on our part by leaving the brake engaged while driving even though the gradual nature of the failure could be considered evidence to the contrary.a cable adjustment was made which did restore partial functionality.yet even though we employed judicious use of the brake from then on, the repair lasted only a few years.we have had no functionality for several years now believing that some flaw in the design made them non-repairable.recently it has come to our attention that this brake system (drum in hat manufactured by trw) has had similar issues in other gmc products in which it has been employed and complaints have been filed (nhtsa item #1006115, service bulletin #020526001b for example).also we discovered that an actual recall had been issued (nhtsa recall campaign #05v161000) apparently for the same trw brake system in the gmc sierra (model years 1999 thru 2005).apparently it has been theorized that these brakes are failing because the shoes are not being adequately disengaged from the drum due to some defect in the return mechanism.we feel that the gradual nature of the failure, the service bulletins which target inadequate return spring tension, the variety of gmc models involved and finally our own (not provable) belief that the cause of these repeated failures is not from driving with the parking brake set warrant further investigation.now that there is a proper fix available for this seemingly obvious defect, i intend to have it done.thank you for your time.

There are several recalls out on my model of vehicle in which my vehicle has the same symptoms but when i run a check on the year vin it comes back with no recalls. How can i make sure that my repairs should be covered under the recalls.

The consumer was unable to drive the vehicle in any gear except first gear at 5 mph. Due to a failed transmission.

1999 gmc jimmy. Transmission issues. New tranny needs to be rebuilt by 80,000 miles. Seats and structure of handles break easily and last for maybe 35,000, new hubs required by 40,000, bail joints fail without warning creating serious road hazards, alternator failure, ujoint failure.all parts replaced between 35,000 and 80,000 to the tune of $11,000 yet no recalls despite mechanics claiming these are recurring problems in these vehicles.never buy a gmc again.

The 4l60e transmission seems to be running hot during warmer summer weather & while driving up hills towing a trailer. The transmission slips from 2nd to 4th gear and yet the 3 automotive shops can not locate a problem!each one has replaced a part or 2 but they all say it is not the transmission nor the computer but none of them can fix it.i just keep getting passed down to another shop so they can get their $200.00 to $300.00 from me.the dealership i purchased it from will not even call me back to discuss the problem and i had paid an extra $1800.00 for an additional warranty on the vehicle.i will never buy another gmc again! *nlm

Both the driver & passenger seat belts prematurely lock when vehicle is moving.this occurs when hitting a bump or making a turn.the seatbelt locks and does not always release immediately;at times stays locked until it is manually removed.the belt will also upon locking activate the ratchet mechanism to continually tighten with every movement of the passenger and driver.this in itself can cause a very dangerous condition because of severe restriction of driver movement.this has been brought to the attention of the dealer who has replaced the seatbelt and mechanism twice.gmc has also been contacted but we were told to use a seatbelt extender of which we did, and the problem still exists.we are concerned that if the seatbelt prematurely locks while moving, will it work in an accident.we requested gmc to send a factory rep which was promised but never acted upon.when gmc was called again, we were told to take it to arbritration.customer service has been notified that we are filing this complaint with nhtsa.their only other solution was to help me make an appointment with another dealer rather than send someone out to look at the seatbelt inertia mechanism.we really feel this is a manufacturing problem that could cause serious consequences if not looked into and corrected.at times to avoid this problem, we do not use the restraints out of frustration!

My 1999 gmc jimmy suv just started having a problem with the abs braking system.this is posing a safety hazard because it lengthens the time it takes for us to stop. Vehicle started making loud noises when turning wheel to left, but because the vehicle wanted to pull to the right, the wheel was almost always turned to the left.thought it was a problem with the alignment, but after i hit a deer, my vehicle was taken in for body repairs and they informed me that the problem was with my hubs and wheel bearings on both sides of the vehicle and that i was very lucky to have hit the deer because my tires would have likely fallen off very soon.i have read many stories on this site almost exactly like mine.gm needs to do something about this as my car has always been well maintained and there is no reason this should have happened so soon.

My vehicle is a 1999 gmc jimmy.it has 65000 miles and i am the original owner and primary driver.the front hubs/bearings have both been replaced in the last 9 months, one at 50,600 miles, and nowone at 65,000 miles.the problem was not fixed by replacing the hub/bearings units.i was told yesterday that both of the front lower ball joints and an idler arm need to be replaced in addition to the hub/bearing.the shop working on the vehicle indicated that this was not normal at 65,000 miles, and that the condition of the ball joints made the vehicle unsafe to drive.i called gm and got absolutely no support from the district service representative since all of my repairs were not done at a gm dealership.the reason i stopped going to gm dealerships was poor service, inflated prices and recommendations for work to be done that wasn't necessary.

The permanently sealed wheel bearing "froze up" causing the wheel to shear off. This was according to the dealer.

Front passenger wheel making loud noise when wheels are turn to the left.had mechanic check, said wheel bearing is going out. Found that manufacturing company had hundred of them back order.

Wheel noise could be heard during normal driving; noise became louder during a right turn especially at 40 mph.mechanic found the right front wheel bearing needed replaced, for a $550 repair cost.this jimmy only has 34,000 miles, but is out of warranty due to time. *nlm

There are several recalls out on my model of vehicle in which my vehicle has the same symptoms but when i run a check on the year vin it comes back with no recalls. How can i make sure that my repairs should be covered under the recalls.

I bought this 1999 gmc jimmy used with 33000 miles. I noticed after buying that when you turned loose of the wheel that the vehicle would swerve to the right. Thinking i had an alignment problem i took it to my tire dealer and that's when he told me that the wheel bearing assembly needed to be replaced. Also he told me that this vehicle was not the only gm vehicle he had seen with that problem. After replacing the humming ,pulling to the right wheel bearing assembly, the problem was corrected. I have noticed on several sites that this is a common problem that gm will not admit to or fix. Bottom line is i should not have to replace that part at 37000 miles. Also the dealers mechanics should have caught it instead of playing dumb like they don't know this problem exist.

I was traveling down rt 33 in pa near near the snydersville exitwhen the car started shaking uncontrolably. It became very difficult to control the car. I pulled off tothe shoulder. I walked around the car & saw that the hub cap was missing. The wheel was barely being held on the car by two posts with none of the nuts on them. Three posts had broken off. I learned from the tow truck driver that this is not an unusual problem with aluminum wheels. I mentioned the incident to my cousin and he told me it had happened to him twice.evidentally, what happens with aluminum wheels is if all nuts are not tightened properly the aluminum vibrates losening the other nuts. I was towed to the dealership and they fixed the car for free. The manager of the dealership acknowledged that this does happen and that there's nothing that can be done to prevent this 100% of the time due to human error. He acknowledged that this does not happen with steel wheels.the wheel could have fallen completely off doing much more damage to the undercarriage. The axel could have dug in and i could have flipped. I could have lost control and hit another vehicle causing damage to that vehicle. More vehicles could have been involved. People could have been hurt or killed.the material needs to be changed to eliminate these vibrations or some system of locking the nuts be devisedso they can't unscrew unless it is intended. This happens way too often and from what learned from the dealership and the tow driver.there is no way to see this coming with the way wheels are designed the nuts are covered.something needs to be done here to take out human error or to make more leeway for such error.changing the materials used or the design could accomplish this.i called 911 anddale chan of dc towing, telephone number 570.992.4311 was sent.i don't remember the date of the incident. I think it was july or august.the date i put in was just to get through the required fields.

For the second time of this vehicle the front wheel assembly on this car needed to be replaced, this time on the other side.somehow, when putting the wheel back on the car not all the nuts were tightened properly both times.according to the tow driver for the first incident, dale chan of dc towing 570.992.4311, the dealership, brown daub in wind gap and for the second incident roberti motors who repaired the wheel assembly the second time. The problem with aluminum wheels is that if not all nuts are tightened properly the material will vibrate and loosen the other nuts.chan said he sees this problem often.after the first front wheel assembly repair about a month later the wheel came almost completely off.all the nuts were gone, 3 of the studs were broken off and the wheel was only hanging on the remaining two studs.the second time, 2-3 weeks after the repair, i caught it a bit earlier.only one nut was missing, one stud was broken off.the other nuts were so loose that i could move them all with my fingers.this also happened to my cousin twice who was a limo driver in chicago.it seems every one in the industry knows about this problem.why is it allowed to continue.why can't we go back to steel wheels where this problem is nonexistent. If we can't why can't it be required that some locking mechanism be designed to keep the nuts from unscrewing as part of the wheel cover?what if the wheel had come off?there could have been much more damage to the undercarriage.i could have gone out of control and involved other vehicles in an accident.the axel could have dug into the road surface and i could have rolled of flipped?people could have been injured or killed.has this already happened?it this what it takes before this problem is addressed?i consider myself to have been lucky.

While driving 40 mph vehicle vibrated. Consumer pulled over and inspected the vehicle. Consumer noticed thatall four wheels were coming off. Vehicle was towed to the dealer for inspection, andmechanic determined that the bolts needed to be replaced.
