I was in an accident with my 1998 gmc jimmy. I t-boned a little volkswagen going appx. 35 mph. Neither my driver side or my passenger side air bags deployed. I was informed that the air bags should have deployed after 15 mph. I bought the vehicle used in 2002, and i was not informed about any recalls or any thing. I felt that the impact was severe enough to deploy the air bags. Instead i ended up smacking my head on the steering wheel.
Consumer stated whiletraveling 25-35 mph vehicle was involved in ahead on collision. Upon impact,air bags did not deploy. Two passengers sustained injuries.consumer was told byinsurance company to call nhtsa.
1998 gmc jimmy was involved in a frontal impact at 6:35 a.m. On friday, february 7, 2003. The vehicle impacted an embankment at approximately 55 mph, causing it to roll twice and eventually rest on the passenger side. The vehicle's air bags did not deploy at the time of impact.
Dt: the front and rear windshield wipers began to intermittently work.this was over a period of three months and later stopped working all together.consumerdid not take the vehicle to a dealer for any repairs because it was no longer under warranty.the transmission did not shift properly after acceleration for a period of about thirty seconds,and then itshifted into gear.the abs was delayed when applying brake pressure.the brakes locked,and then the vehicle slid.the brakes pads werereplaced every three months, this has been ongoing for the last two years.the steering wheel pulled to the right continuously, an alignment was performed a year ago but it did not correct the problem.in january 2004 the vehicle was involved in an accident, it struck a parked car at a speed of about 30 mph and the air bags did not deploy.this was front impact.the consumer has numerous complaints about the vehicle..

The steering wheel abruptly pulled to the right.when i tried to steer the vehicle back on the road, the steering did not respond well.the steering was out of control.this caused my vehicle to do a 180 and go off the road.the vehicle subsequently flipped 4 or 5 times.also the airbags did not deploy even though there was front end damage.

Both police officers agreed that with the type of accident there should have been a deployment of the airbags. Because of no deployment i was injured and had to go to the hospital to determine the extent of my injuries.

I was driving a 1998gmc jimmy from oklahoma city, ok to walters, ok.everything was great and the car was driving perfectly.i was on the he bailey turnpike on highway marker 30 - i could see the sign and pull off for the faxon exit and the big sign for walters.a few wisps of white smoke appeared and then heavy grey smoke started to billow into my face through the right side vent of the driver's seat.i started to cough and couldn't see so i pulled over to the shoulder of the road.as i got out of the car, i pulled the hood release and ran to the front of the vehicles.under the hood, half of the engine bay was already burned away - like the bottle for anti-freeze and hoses.... The whole engine bay was on fire.the car was gone at that point - there was no way to save it.i ran to the passenger front seat and grabbed a basket that had my census id and i threw it away from the car.i grabbed some cds then too, but they were on fire.the dash was on fire and was spreading into the front seat.i threw the cds in the dirt to extinguish the fire.i grabbed the passenger side door of the back seat and grabbed a hamper with presents for my daughter.i ran to the other side back seat and grabbed the legal papers of census applicants - they were on fire and i snuffed out the fire in the dirt.i grabbed my jean jacket with my military id and driver's license - the back seat and front seat were on fire and i ran away from the vehicle and it fireballed and exploded.two men from the turnpike maintenance saw me driving - smoking pouring out front he vehicle; they saw me pull out on the shoulder and saw me running to salvage what i could from the burning vehicle.they came to help me and called the fire department and highway patrol.minor injuries i had smoke inhalation, minor burns to face - soot on hands & feet. The engine continually misfires. There is a tsb bulletin #00-06-04-003b. Deposit buildup on popped valve ball &/or seat, causing it to stick. There is a recall because of this but only in california. I live in alaska. I got an estimate of $1200 bucks to fix this problem.because of this, i only get 5-7 mpg, and have little power. Also, my abs light turns on and the abs activates at low speeds on dry ground. My electrical system is totally messed up. My right clicker just the sound not light) goes off when driving. It iscompletely erratic and unpredictable. My speakers turn off and on sporadically. My driver side seat adjuster broke off with little pressure. My steering wheel continuously pulls to the right. This many problems in a vehicle is ridiculous. What a lemon. Especially since i haveseen the same exact complaints all over this sight about this specific vehicle.
Drive an 1998 gmc jimmy with around 172,000 miles on it (i know this is a lot of miles).had the local gm dealer work on my rear defroster (one of the clips fell off).after receiving the vehicle back from the dealer i turned my defroster on about two weeks later.the back window exploded like a shotgun after about 15-20 seconds.dealer says rear defroster voltage regulator must have went bad.i argued that a fuse should had blown before an explosion took place.gm complaint department also disagrees, saying that the vehicle is old and things like this happen.luckily,no one was standing by the rear window when it exploded because it probably would have killed them. If i'm wrong tell me i'm wrong but i believe gm is responsible for no only replacing the window but fixing the rear defroster voltage regulator.i hope this is an isolated case but maybe by reporting this i can prevent someone from getting hurt (including a gm technician).

The first time it happened, i started the vehicle and left the parking lot, stopped at a stop sign, proceeded into the roadway and engine died.everything went off - all power all electrical.i had just purchased the vehicle second hand and the owner told me later that she had battery problems, but she put in a new battery.the dealer could not fix it.my husband figured it was the ignition switch.i kept the car for twelve years and had to change it twice, plus the initial repair was warrantied.when it first occurred in 2000 i looked for a recall, but there was none.i remember the previous owner had a very large keychain, and we did figure out on our own to carry a single key, but after about 5-6 years you still need to change the ignition, you can tell cause the electronics start going wacky in the vehicle.then it won't start, like you think its the battery.it is sad that people died from this and that gmc cannot admit that this has been going on, i know since 1998. I now know why i got such a good deal on the vehicle, that person could have killed me, by not telling me the truth!
Turn signal and hazard light failure, electric window control failure off and on.
Since owning this vehicle, two problems have been chronic. #1 the drivers side window does not fully open nor close without assistance. #2 the blinker sound comes on for no reason and stays on for random lengths of time. Tapping on the brake will turn off the blinker noise for a short time, but it comes back on often. Yes, i have replaced the fuses multiple times.
The fuel pump failed.a new fuel pump and fuel filter were installed.consumer is dissatisfied with this failure.*jgthe battery and the alternator failed as well.
I have a gmc jimmy that is experiencing multiple dashboard failures. When i fill the gas tank the gauge goes to empty, then when i drive a while it goes to full and then back to empty. I never have a partially full reading. Also the air bag light comes off and on. My oil pressure gauge reves up and down like i am out of oil. I pull off the road and check and the oil is fine. I am not sure what to do about this. I took it to the gm dealer and they want more than i can afford just to look at it and can't guarantee anything. I did pay $85 to put it on the diagnostic tester but this never showed up. Please help!
Auto transmission in twice before failed,battery leak damaged elec sys, rear defog stopped working (glass had to be replaced), dealer unable to stop front suspension popping noises, pass seat recliner handle keeps breaking off.
I have had two instances of battery failure - acdelco 75-6yr, the first at the above date and the second on 08/05/2002.both failures were the same - the positive battery pole broke out of the battery spilling the acid out of the batteryand onto the components below the battery. The acid could spill onto critical components such as brake lines, fluid hoses and electrical wires as well as eating away mounts that secure the battery and nearby components.the tow operators and service writers have indicated that this is a common failure of this battery, yet the dealer mentioned above has been arrogantly unresponsive to this known manufacturing defect.

1) instrument cluster intermittently shuts off while driving, then pops back on. On two occasions, it happens while crossing traffic lanes and also lost power - almost struck by oncoming traffic. Service engine light also comes on after such an occurence 2) exhaust noise during accelleration. Gets more pronounced as vehicle comes to normal operatoring temperature (3) driver side seat recliner lever broke off without much pressure being applied (4) air conditioner compressor went out during family vacation. Compressor squeeked for months before it finally quit (5) alternator died.
Last week truck lost all power and i could not get my key out of the ignition,once all power was back key came loose.i have had a problem with muffler since 1st month sounds like a hole in the exhaust and makes a loud ping sound ,dealer just told me i needed to replace muffler.when in reverse and backing out of driveway a loud clunk sound from front passenger side.have lost power 2 times while driving down the street.have also noticed that when i turn anything on in the car i am losing a significant amount of power .this includes blinkers,radio,a/c ,if they are all on my volts drop to almost 11.
Right rear ignition coil connector disconnected causing failure.
My 1998 gmc jimmy has a defect where the key get stuck in the ignition and will not come out.i had this problem looked at 18 months ago and the ignition cylinder was replaced. I understand from the dealer that this is a common problem with the floor shifter, if this is a common problem why isn't there a recall. This is dangerous keys left in the ignition can lead to someone taking the car without permission especially a child.

Noted issues with my 98 jimmy (purchased 12/97)that i have had to repair which i believe were defective parts: 1) 10/00 mileage=57248 replaced faulty ignition switch due to dash board lights not working2) not repaired to date:wipers have had occasions they did not work. I usually can get them working by turning them on/off a few times. Intermittent mode takes a long time(3-10 seconds) to start running in best scenario.3) both front reclining seat levers broke off(brittle metal rod)within first 3 years of usage. I have not replaced due to cost of replacing complete seat assemblies is only fix.4) 12/04 mileage=129,518throttle choke plate assembly disintegrated partially and jammed throttle open. This almost caused an accident as could not come to a complete stop while car was running. After broken piece worked its way past the valves i needed $1900 in cylinder head repairs.
Ignition switch: gauges went to zero, all idiot lights came on, car would not accelerate pulling into traffic on busy highway, narrowly escaped accident when gauges came back on, idiot lights went out, and engine accelerated normally. Did this again in our driveway twice the next week. Took to dealer, mack brown inc., in boone, nc, not the selling dealer, car was under warranty at the time. They kept it several days and called to say it was fixed. When went to pick up vehicle, i asked what they had replaced, and they admitted they had done nothing, and said the diagnosis computer showed so many potential problems they didn't know what to replace first. I told them to keep it until it was fixed, that i wasn't putting my kids in it until it was fixed, and got in my older and higher mileage mercedes which has never had a single problem, and left. They kept it a couple more days and decided to replace the ignition switch, which they said had caused similar symptoms in many full size gm pickups they had seen, but they had never seen a jimmy with the problem. They said the ignition switch in both models was the same part, though. The car has never had the problem since. Unrelated brake problem, brake pedal would suddenly be hard, as if with no power assist. Back to mack brown, inc., who diagnosed it as a clogged pcv valve. Problem has not recurred. Also, for a year the emergency brake will not hold the vehicle on even the slightest incline, despite mack brown, inc. And two independent garages adjusting it on three different occasions.
Truck would not run at full power due to the ignition switch lights would also fail on the dash . Key would also get stuck in the ignition do to a problem with the ignition .the exhaust problem was the baffels were busted inside the muffler .windshield had a void between the upper frame and the windshield causing it to leak.belt tensioner broke during a start up .air conditioner compressor went out duringmy travel home from work.ak
The key will not release from the ignition which may potentially cause anti-theft problems.the only way the key can be removed is to take the vehicle to a repair shop.
I have 86,000 miles on my 1998 jimmy and dropped my granddaughter off at the my other daughters place, the key turned off no problem.i drove to work and could not turn the key to the acc or off position and could not get the key out.i checked the website and noticed that this happened to a couple of other owners who ended up paying over $700.00 for the repair, which included replacing the ignition module and reprogramming. This happened at a time when i am going through a divorce, my other daughter is in the hospital and my father is having heart problems, so it really is inconvenient and with all that is going on, has changed my attitude regarding gmc's. I used to swear by them, now i am thinking of looking at other dealers.i had the head gasket blow on this model, when they repaired it, they dropped a bolt down inside the piston, which they did not catch until it cracked the piston, which delayed me getting my vehicle back.they misdiagnosed a control module that would sound like the signal kept turning on by itself, they replaced my brake pads stating that goodyear installed them wrong, because they kept squeaking.i paid $200.00 to have them replaced and they still squeak.this was done at jim lupient in st. Louis park.the technician after repairing the engine forgot to tighten the air intake clamp down and it vibrated against the air-conditioning hose, which cut a hold in the hose and drained all the freon.when they repaired the hose, they did not evacuate the lines, so the air-conditiioner sounds like it gurgles at startup or when you step on the gas.
Ignition switch on my 1998 gmc jimmy has had to be replaced each year since i purchased it - the dealer repair sheet shows that they replaced it at around 30k miles. I am a single mother with no additional income and no "extra" vehicle i need assistance in this matter.

I have a gmc jimmy and the electrical switch keeps going on it. For two years now this is the thrid one i had to replace. When the switch goes, you no longer have any dash lights and your transmission does not work properly. You only have 2nd, and 3rd gear which causes a hazard because you have very little power when you are at a complete stop and then proceed to go. You better make sure nothing is coming as far as you can see because you start out very very slowly and it takes a while to get going at a faster rate to keep up with traffic. You also do not know on how fast you are traveling for a safe speed. I find this problem to be very dangerous for the driver and others out there on the road and considering it has happened 3 times within 2 years, i believe something should be looked into further on this.
Key gets locked in the ignition and i can't remove it, the dash lights and gauges do not work and transmission doesn't start off in 1st gear. This has happened 4 other times and everytime i have had to have the ignition switch replaced and this is in a 3 year period. This has got to be the worth problem on these vehicles.
Ignition switch failed three times, causingvehicle to automatically shut off. The car while driving at a high speed, lost power, the transmission dropped into low gear, and would only proceed at a slow speed, this happened more than once, the service engine malfunction light came on and stayed on.i was told by the dealer that they could not detect the problem.the problem occured near, for the third time, near coral springs gmc and i tookthe car intothem immediately and they came up with transmissions codes on the computer.i was told to take the car back to king since the other dealer did not have a tranmission mechanic.king was contacted and i was told to bring the car in later , the engine malfunction light went off and it drove normally.the day i brought the car to king it occured again, and this time the symptoms were the same, but the instrument also went dead.king reported to me that the problem was not the transmission but the ignition switch which caused the computer to loose power, creating the transmission to downshift and, the car to loose engine power, and the instruments to fail.at high speed this creates some concern as you can imagine.they indicated it has happen on other vechiles.i contacted general motors since i consideredit a safety problem.i feel owners and other dealers should be notified, since apparently it is not easily recognized.thank you.

I think this should be a call back.i was told the part was hard to come by because they had to purge inventory of the old part.if the new upgraded part is so hard to get i would suspect that the problem is larger than is being let on.at this point i have a rental, waiting for the car to be fixed.this is similar to the ford recall with the ignition switches that caused fires only they say this problem won't cause a fire. But what happens if it goes while driving at highway speeds,or any speed at that matter?
Everytime i start my vehicle, all the panel lights comes on. I took it to the dealer and they stated the vehicle has a bad wiring problem. The vehicle have trouble cranking most times and the compressor has died for no apparent reason. This problem needs to be addressed before someone ends up in a fatal accident.

Consumer recently had vehicle serviced concerning collant corrosion, consumer was advised that the reservoir for the collant was rusted and instead of an orange color it was a greenish color, therefore coolant had to be flushed out and new coolant added.
The problem as described in bulletin #990602012d occured with my coolant system on the incident date.i had the whole system flushed and new coolant added.on 5/21/03, i had the coolant system flushed again and new dex-cool added.as of today's date 7/14/03, i noticed while having problems with my air conditioning, which may be related, that the dex-cool is almost completly emptied out of the over-flow.i think there is something significantly wrong with the coolant system and needs to be recalled!!!a 5-year antifreeze shouldn't only last 2 months.

The serpentine belt tensioner is an item requiring no maintenance. When it fails the vehicle is completely disabled. The transmissin cooling line failed where it connects to the transmission. This connection point is directly above the exhaust system so when it fails transmission oil is spewed all over the hot exhaust pipes/catalytic converter.

Engine stalls while driving usually at low speeds or turning. Also, idling causing a loss of power. Consumer has taken it to dealer 4 times, but dealer cannot duplicate defect.

Noted issues with my 98 jimmy (purchased 12/97)that i have had to repair which i believe were defective parts: 1) 10/00 mileage=57248 replaced faulty ignition switch due to dash board lights not working2) not repaired to date:wipers have had occasions they did not work. I usually can get them working by turning them on/off a few times. Intermittent mode takes a long time(3-10 seconds) to start running in best scenario.3) both front reclining seat levers broke off(brittle metal rod)within first 3 years of usage. I have not replaced due to cost of replacing complete seat assemblies is only fix.4) 12/04 mileage=129,518throttle choke plate assembly disintegrated partially and jammed throttle open. This almost caused an accident as could not come to a complete stop while car was running. After broken piece worked its way past the valves i needed $1900 in cylinder head repairs.

The engine continually misfires. There is a tsb bulletin #00-06-04-003b. Deposit buildup on popped valve ball &/or seat, causing it to stick. There is a recall because of this but only in california. I live in alaska. I got an estimate of $1200 bucks to fix this problem.because of this, i only get 5-7 mpg, and have little power. Also, my abs light turns on and the abs activates at low speeds on dry ground. My electrical system is totally messed up. My right clicker just the sound not light) goes off when driving. It iscompletely erratic and unpredictable. My speakers turn off and on sporadically. My driver side seat adjuster broke off with little pressure. My steering wheel continuously pulls to the right. This many problems in a vehicle is ridiculous. What a lemon. Especially since i haveseen the same exact complaints all over this sight about this specific vehicle.

Last week truck lost all power and i could not get my key out of the ignition,once all power was back key came loose.i have had a problem with muffler since 1st month sounds like a hole in the exhaust and makes a loud ping sound ,dealer just told me i needed to replace muffler.when in reverse and backing out of driveway a loud clunk sound from front passenger side.have lost power 2 times while driving down the street.have also noticed that when i turn anything on in the car i am losing a significant amount of power .this includes blinkers,radio,a/c ,if they are all on my volts drop to almost 11.
Vehicle pulls to the right and after three attempts to correct the problem the vehicle now exhibits uneven tire wear and a popping noise from front right suspension.also, after several attempts to correct the air conditioning problem, it continues to cool the interior down well below selected temperature.
I have a 1998, gmc jimmy. In the summer of 2002 we began to have problems with the car's ac unit. It would go out for a while, then it would work for a day or so. Then it went out again, until finally it went out all together. Just recently we took it to two separate mechanics to see what the problem was. When the air conditioner control is turned to the highest setting, it does not work. About the transmission, often it roars after being started up until it gets to 3rd gear, then it stops.don't know why.
1) instrument cluster intermittently shuts off while driving, then pops back on. On two occasions, it happens while crossing traffic lanes and also lost power - almost struck by oncoming traffic. Dt:the contact stated the rearwindshield wipers have not been working for approximately one year.the frontwindshield wipers worked only when the weather was cold, butstill did not work properly.the delay ranas though it was on normal.no repairs have been madeto the windshield wipers .also, the rear brake lights have not worked for approximately one month.she has replaced the bulbs, fuse, and checked the electronic sensor.the problem still existed. The blinker sound comes on for no reason and stays on for random lengths of time. Tapping on the brake will turn off the blinker noise for a short time, but it comes back on often. I replaced the turn signal relay, but the problem remained.
Whenturninghazard warning signal smoke comes from the lens. There is no sign of a shortage in either blinker.dealer will be contacted. Please provide more information.

Mrthe windshield wiper motor failed prior to the expiration of the warranty.the dealer was unable to duplicate the problem and declined to replace the module.the complete failure of the wiper motor occurred during a severe rainstorm.the turn signal module/switch failed, and the driver side seat belt did not retract.dealer was unable to duplicate the seat belt problem.scc

I was driving a 1998gmc jimmy from oklahoma city, ok to walters, ok.everything was great and the car was driving perfectly.i was on the he bailey turnpike on highway marker 30 - i could see the sign and pull off for the faxon exit and the big sign for walters.a few wisps of white smoke appeared and then heavy grey smoke started to billow into my face through the right side vent of the driver's seat.i started to cough and couldn't see so i pulled over to the shoulder of the road.as i got out of the car, i pulled the hood release and ran to the front of the vehicles.under the hood, half of the engine bay was already burned away - like the bottle for anti-freeze and hoses.... The whole engine bay was on fire.the car was gone at that point - there was no way to save it.i ran to the passenger front seat and grabbed a basket that had my census id and i threw it away from the car.i grabbed some cds then too, but they were on fire.the dash was on fire and was spreading into the front seat.i threw the cds in the dirt to extinguish the fire.i grabbed the passenger side door of the back seat and grabbed a hamper with presents for my daughter.i ran to the other side back seat and grabbed the legal papers of census applicants - they were on fire and i snuffed out the fire in the dirt.i grabbed my jean jacket with my military id and driver's license - the back seat and front seat were on fire and i ran away from the vehicle and it fireballed and exploded.two men from the turnpike maintenance saw me driving - smoking pouring out front he vehicle; they saw me pull out on the shoulder and saw me running to salvage what i could from the burning vehicle.they came to help me and called the fire department and highway patrol.minor injuries i had smoke inhalation, minor burns to face - soot on hands & feet. Engine check light on intermittently.suv accelelerate slowly, rpms reach 3000 before vehicles moves. Instrumentpanel lights going on and off, including the fuel gauge indicator.over head dash light won't work.took my suv to the dealership on a friday 11/09/01.all problems were occuring at thattime and they could see for themselves.i was informed the the diagnosistic test showed 5 trans codes.and that wire to the transmission was loose and they reconnected that wire and all codes were now clear.the very next day my suv began doing the same thing all over again.i called the dealership and reported the problem on monday 11/12/01.i was then told that the problem may be caused be a wire leading from my ignition to transmission.and that i mightneed an ignition switch.and that to do the work it would cost me $400 to $500.and that they didn't think that the fuel gauge problem was related to this problems.there are time thati am unable to control my windshield wipers.i have read over 12 simularcompliants & incidents.gmc need to repair these malfunction before someone is seriously injuried. I have almost been rear ender several times because my suv won'taccelerate properly.and to be driving along and suddenly haveyour instrument panel fails, this is distracting and unsafe.also, my emergency brake will not hold. Your form would not allow me to correctly fill out the information for my problems. The car can be off or running at any speed for me to have lock problems. I first noticed the problems shortly after i bought the car and they have continued for over two years in spite of the dealer having repeatedly tried to fix the problems. All my door and rear hatch locks have failed hundreds of times in spite of my returning the car to the dealership many times.the hatch can pop open if i merely close another door.it can pop open if i am driving down the road.frequently when i am driving the locks will pop back open if i try to lock them.the locks fail many times when the car is running in spite of my having taken the car to the dealership many times and the dealer havingtried to fix it many times.the dealer does not appear capable of fixing the locks.supposedly the rear hatch lock has been changed several times but it still pops open on its own.
Both of these latches have been replaced previously.after talking to other jimmy owners and dealers, we find this is a common problem.

I didn't bring the vehicle to the dealership because they told me it was out of warranty.figures...it went out of warranty in may 2001. I don't think that a vehicle should need new ball joints at 28,916 miles.it is my understanding that the ball joints are being replaced on other gm jimmy's that are older than mine. I aslo, included the emergency brake which i was told was frozen in place.this emergency/parking brake was not used. How would it be frozen in place????

1998 gmc s15 jimmy truck,defective encoder motor. On 3 separate occasions during snow storms the consumer had to rely on the 2-wheel drive to navigate on the roads covered in snow and ice without the benefit of the added traction of 4-wheel drive.once the consumer was unable to shift from 4-wheel drive back to 2-wheel drive. This past winter, the consumer lost traction and skidded out of control. The dealer replaced the wheel cover.

Transmission slipped and lost power while towing 4200 pound rv, a unit well under the towing capacity of the gmc jimmy.transmission got hot and slipped with noticable loss of power.odd odor came from engine compartment, also."service engine soon" light came on during fuel stop.we thought it was due to fuel cap or gasoline used.contacted dealer upon return from trip and had item scheduled for check on mon 6/7/1998.had transmission oil and filter changed and mechanic noted oil excessively black.check engine light monitor indicated tranmisssion had overheated twice.recommendation was to drive slower, change oil and filter more often, get a wind resistance deflector for towing vehicle.vehicle has towing package with extra transmission oil coller rated at over 10,000 pounds towing capacity.salesman, who was a previous rv dealer/salesman, assured us when we purchased the vehicle that it was more than adequate to handle the towing of the rv (26 foot dutchman lite, rated at 4200 pounds).afraid that transmission will fail again and we will become stranded.wife, who drives vehicle daily, also noted that transmission felt like it was slipping periodically when driving without any load attached to the veheicle.am overly concerned now that i also have a 1998 gmc sonoma with same engine, trnasmission, and towing capacity for alternate for towing rv, and that it's transmission may experience the same symptoms.

Transmission would not shift out of park when vehicle was parked in driveway. Vehicle was towed to dealership. Dealer says that some sticky substance was spilled in the console by the automatic transmission shifter and caused the transmission shift assy to lock up. The only thing that was spilled in that area was a covered cup filled with sweet tea that tipped over the cup holder. I don't know how the liquid could've leaked underneath the console and cause my transmission to freeze up. People drink in cars all the time, and this should not happen. This is a default with the transmission console. Because it locked up my transmission, my vehicle was inoperable and could have put me in a serious risk while i was driving on the road or parked in an unsafe area. Fortunately the incident occurred at my parents house and there were no incidents.
The transmission on my vehicle has been slipping-for lack of a better word-when it gets warm.it began at 50000 miles and the transmission had to be rebuilt-with gm parts at 85000 miles.it has begun to slip again.i understand from reviewing a site called complaint station that this is not an isolated problem. *nlm
Dealer repair center states that there were several clutches that were burnt and that a broken band was found as well as having the housing scalded.said that an aftermarket transmission filter was found in the unit and that a subpar fluid was used to refill it.this car was picked up brand new off of the lot and the transmission was never serviced by anyone since we have owned it.all repairs and maintenance have been done at this same dealer as we had a warranty on this unit until 4 months ago when we hit 36,000 miles.
Transmission makes loud roaring noise usually when starting from a stop (5-10 mph) and won't shift into next gear - have to decelerate and try again and sometimes takes 3-5 attempts before will shift - had to pull to side of road on several occasions during rush hour.almost in accident on one occasion due to this problem.occasionally transmission has roared when traveling 50 mph and had to decelerate.no transmission light warning me of problem illuminates.had serviced twice and still same problem and dealership fixed oil leak on first service (vehicle had to be towed to dealership) and replaced part 2nd service and still is a problem, last occuring on 7/15/99, following 2nd service.i am going to request a 3rd service.dealership has not had a transmission service/repair man on staff the last 3 attempts to get repair.both services have been completed by adams chevrolet/gmc in raytown, mo because dave cross has not had a transmission man.however, for the 2nd service (july 1999), dave cross accepted the jimmy for service but had adams do the service.dave cross service mgr (i believe is mgr) told me when i picked up jimmy following 2nd repair that there had been a recent "bulletin" that required a piece be replaced which they did and supposedly fixed the problem. However, the problem still exists, so i will have to take the jimmy in again.also, i requested to see the bulletin and the mgr refused.he said it was not for customer use.
Failure was intermittent. Gauges would fail,and all dash gauge lamps would light up. Stopped at dealer and asked if they knew of the problem. I was told its a known problem but if it wasn't fixed at any time it could go,and i would be stuck. Would not be able to shift the transmission, it would fail to start and all the gauges would fail. The problem is with a bad ground in the electrical asm behind the keylock and it would cost around $500 to fix. I think this should be a call back.i was told the part was hard to come by because they had to purge inventory of the old part.if the new upgraded part is so hard to get i would suspect that the problem is larger than is being let on.at this point i have a rental, waiting for the car to be fixed.this is similar to the ford recall with the ignition switches that caused fires only they say this problem won't cause a fire. But what happens if it goes while driving at highway speeds,or any speed at that matter?

Dt: the front and rear windshield wipers began to intermittently work.this was over a period of three months and later stopped working all together.consumerdid not take the vehicle to a dealer for any repairs because it was no longer under warranty.the transmission did not shift properly after acceleration for a period of about thirty seconds,and then itshifted into gear.the abs was delayed when applying brake pressure.the brakes locked,and then the vehicle slid.the brakes pads werereplaced every three months, this has been ongoing for the last two years.the steering wheel pulled to the right continuously, an alignment was performed a year ago but it did not correct the problem.in january 2004 the vehicle was involved in an accident, it struck a parked car at a speed of about 30 mph and the air bags did not deploy.this was front impact.the consumer has numerous complaints about the vehicle..
Windshield wipers fail to actuate on an intermittent basis with no discernable pattern. Frequency of failure is increasing. When the wipers do fail sometimes they will activate after 15-20 attempts to turn them on. At times only stopping and turning off the ignition swithch and restarting the vehicle will get the wipers to activate. Transmission fbegan failing with occassional but noticable late and hard shifts from first to second gear . Engine light code scan indicated a failure of the valve body. Replacement of the valve body fixed the problem , but the addtional torque put on the drivetrain from the hard shifts most probably caused the failure of the rear u-joint as well.

Front wheel bearings failed. This causedwheels to become loose. Vehicle made a loud terrible grinding noise. Took vehicle to mechanic who indicatedbearings could have sheared off. Abs brake failed.also, u-joint failed causing grinding noise and vibration.
Consumer stated it was determined by a mechanic that the transmission must be replaced. The extended warranty inspector found salt water in the transmission and determined that the damage to the transmission was not covered.consumer is filing a dispute of a claim.

Drivers seat slid forward forcing my knee into the dash. I sustained a cut to my left eyelid, which may have been caused by hitting the stearing column. The air bags did not deploy though i hit the rear of another suv, a blazer. Seat belt did not seem to hold me in place or restrain me.
Manual recline bar on both driver and passenger front seats broke.the first incidence happened on driver's side seat before vehicle was purchased (pre-owned vehicle).vehicle was under warranty and so bar was replaced.the driver's side recline bar broke a second time approximately 3-4 years later.the passenger's side recline bar also broke approximately 6 months to a year after that.because the seat was in an upright position when the recline bar broke on any of the occasions, had the seat been in a reclined position, the seat possibly would not have been usable.the recline bars on both side have not been replaced, as the cost is over $200 for each part.

Drivers seat slid forward forcing my knee into the dash. I sustained a cut to my left eyelid, which may have been caused by hitting the stearing column. The air bags did not deploy though i hit the rear of another suv, a blazer. Seat belt did not seem to hold me in place or restrain me.

1) instrument cluster intermittently shuts off while driving, then pops back on. On two occasions, it happens while crossing traffic lanes and also lost power - almost struck by oncoming traffic. Service engine light also comes on after such an occurence 2) exhaust noise during accelleration. Gets more pronounced as vehicle comes to normal operatoring temperature (3) driver side seat recliner lever broke off without much pressure being applied (4) air conditioner compressor went out during family vacation. Compressor squeeked for months before it finally quit (5) alternator died.
Noted issues with my 98 jimmy (purchased 12/97)that i have had to repair which i believe were defective parts: 1) 10/00 mileage=57248 replaced faulty ignition switch due to dash board lights not working2) not repaired to date:wipers have had occasions they did not work. I usually can get them working by turning them on/off a few times. Intermittent mode takes a long time(3-10 seconds) to start running in best scenario.3) both front reclining seat levers broke off(brittle metal rod)within first 3 years of usage. I have not replaced due to cost of replacing complete seat assemblies is only fix.4) 12/04 mileage=129,518throttle choke plate assembly disintegrated partially and jammed throttle open. This almost caused an accident as could not come to a complete stop while car was running. After broken piece worked its way past the valves i needed $1900 in cylinder head repairs.
Vehicle was parked and consumer'swife went inside ofvehicle to adjustseat, lever recliner level snapped, anddriver's seat went back.there were no injuries.the lever mechanism are constructed of brittle material and easily snap off.the manufacturerpointed out that the failures are common but not recalled.

Passenger seat handle broke on my 1998 gmc jimmy. I understand this is a common problem on gmc jimmy/chevorlet blazers. Seat handles should not break; a recall is in order. There are safety issues; if the seat falls it can effect the driver and/or crush rear passengers.
The engine continually misfires. There is a tsb bulletin #00-06-04-003b. Deposit buildup on popped valve ball &/or seat, causing it to stick. There is a recall because of this but only in california. I live in alaska. I got an estimate of $1200 bucks to fix this problem.because of this, i only get 5-7 mpg, and have little power. Also, my abs light turns on and the abs activates at low speeds on dry ground. My electrical system is totally messed up. My right clicker just the sound not light) goes off when driving. The contact owns a 1998 gmc jimmy.while driving less than 15 mph down a steep, wet road, the brakes failed and the vehicle crashed into a guardrail.the bumper and headlamps were damaged.the vehicle is currently at the body shop and will be taken to the dealer for an abs diagnosis.the manufacturer stated that the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign id number 97v218000 (service brakes, hydraulic:foundation components:hoses, lines/piping, and fittings).the dealer information was unavailable.the current and failure mileages were 113,000.

Ignition switch: gauges went to zero, all idiot lights came on, car would not accelerate pulling into traffic on busy highway, narrowly escaped accident when gauges came back on, idiot lights went out, and engine accelerated normally. Did this again in our driveway twice the next week. Took to dealer, mack brown inc., in boone, nc, not the selling dealer, car was under warranty at the time. They kept it several days and called to say it was fixed. When went to pick up vehicle, i asked what they had replaced, and they admitted they had done nothing, and said the diagnosis computer showed so many potential problems they didn't know what to replace first. I told them to keep it until it was fixed, that i wasn't putting my kids in it until it was fixed, and got in my older and higher mileage mercedes which has never had a single problem, and left. They kept it a couple more days and decided to replace the ignition switch, which they said had caused similar symptoms in many full size gm pickups they had seen, but they had never seen a jimmy with the problem. They said the ignition switch in both models was the same part, though. The car has never had the problem since. Unrelated brake problem, brake pedal would suddenly be hard, as if with no power assist. Back to mack brown, inc., who diagnosed it as a clogged pcv valve. Problem has not recurred. Also, for a year the emergency brake will not hold the vehicle on even the slightest incline, despite mack brown, inc. And two independent garages adjusting it on three different occasions.

I was driving in mexico last nov 18th 2004 -jan 1st 2005 i was driving on bumpy roads and high usage of brakes on poor roads . Abs failed and when i hit paved roads the brakes came back to like new system, then in july of this year i was driving down dirt road and went around a corner and it was like i had no brakes again i want the abs removed from all of my cars now it is a bad system . I am a trained driver i have sub contracted to kelly haze as a abs recorder for new vehicle.

Gmc jimmy 1998 cars reached 34000 miles anti- lock brake light comes on.at low speed sometimes (5-10 mph) anti-lock comes on and truck take a while to stop. This problem is same as nhtsa campaign id number : 05v379000 gm recall no. 05068 and should also include 1998 gmc jimmy also. Spoke to gmc and was told this car is covered for this recall.

The abs light is on in my 1998 gmc jimmy.i have heard about a recall about this particular item, but my truck isn't qualified for it.i'm wondering why and if there is anything i can do to get it to.there is something with the sensor and corroding in the recall.i believe that may be my problem.i haven't fixed it yet because i was hoping it would be under the recall.what happens is if the light were to come off, my brakes lock up.in the recall, it mentions that this sensor getting corroded causes slow traffic accidents.i haven't gotten into any accidents, but i would like to know if it would be under the recall before i have to spend the money to get it fixed.
I was kind of upset for a vehicle i bought used with only 19216 miles and numerous things went wrong from day i purchased, already brought in to dealer right after purchasing for other things, but i had to purchase all 4 brakes and rotors all the way around and replace them myself since it would have cost me big bucks.i can't understand why they all went bad so fast.

Dt: the front and rear windshield wipers began to intermittently work.this was over a period of three months and later stopped working all together.consumerdid not take the vehicle to a dealer for any repairs because it was no longer under warranty.the transmission did not shift properly after acceleration for a period of about thirty seconds,and then itshifted into gear.the abs was delayed when applying brake pressure.the brakes locked,and then the vehicle slid.the brakes pads werereplaced every three months, this has been ongoing for the last two years.the steering wheel pulled to the right continuously, an alignment was performed a year ago but it did not correct the problem.in january 2004 the vehicle was involved in an accident, it struck a parked car at a speed of about 30 mph and the air bags did not deploy.this was front impact.the consumer has numerous complaints about the vehicle..
The rotor rusted, which caused the vehicle to experience limited braking ability.
When applying brakes there was pulsating and noise, dealer determined rotors had to be replaced, they were disintegrated. Could not be turned, all 4 rotors were replaced.
While going downhill and applying the brakes, the pedal went to the floor and there was no braking ability.consumer used emergency brakes and went into aditch to avoid a crash.problem believed to be caused by part of the brake hose line missingbecause it hit the exhaust manifold and melted.

When you let go of steering wheel, car goes immediately right.the first time the dealer did a wheel alignment and it was okay for a while but then it did it again and we took it back.the second time we took it back to dealer they charged us for a wheel alignment and said we had "curbed" the vehicle but we had not.now it is doing the same thing again and we do not want to have to pay for another wheel alignment.

When releasing the steering wheel the vehicle immediately begins pulling to the right.
After getting an oil change i was informed of a leak in my oil pan, as i got home the next morning i noticed that my car leaked out all the oil in the car resulting from a fault o-ring seal, also now having problems with the suspension as my idler arm is about to snap at any moment resulting in the lose of steering for the car.the car was taken to a mechanicbefore i purchased it and only one bushing was replaced instead of all of them at the same time, also the mechanic improperly replaced the front shocks as instead of replacing the grease bearings the mechanic used bolts to assemble and hold them in place resulting in an annoying sqeak in the front end of the car since the shocks cant be properly greased as there are not grease fittings.

Vehicle pulls to the right and after three attempts to correct the problem the vehicle now exhibits uneven tire wear and a popping noise from front right suspension.also, after several attempts to correct the air conditioning problem, it continues to cool the interior down well below selected temperature.

I had surgury on my right hand and could not drive it for about 5 weeks afterward. When i did drive the car,i told her it needed a front end alignment and to get the oil changed. Of course, mom (me) ended up taking it into monroe muffler and brakes, where we always get are cars routine maintenence taken care of. They called me about an hour later and asked who i bought this car off of. I told them. They said they could not believe they sold me this death trap. 3 of the 4 balljoints holding the front up where broken and the pin cracked.plus he thought there was a recall on them. I checked with gmc and they stated there was no recall on the ball joints for this vehicle. The mechanic saidthese ball joints were way to small to support this kind of vehicle. I took the ball joints and have thenm now as proof. My daughter, son or i could have been hurt or worse-which was very possible probability in the shape the under body of that car was in. We were very luck we did not have a major accident. I called the nissan company and talked to bruce bright. He sounded very concerned and would call right back after checking into it. He never called and it has been a week. I called today and left a message. Still no call. My questionand complaint to you, is it legal for a car company(a major named company) to sell a car that is very unsafe to a person? i am a woman who doesn't know about cars, and my daughter doesn't. I didn't bring the vehicle to the dealership because they told me it was out of warranty.figures...it went out of warranty in may 2001. I don't think that a vehicle should need new ball joints at 28,916 miles.it is my understanding that the ball joints are being replaced on other gm jimmy's that are older than mine. I aslo, included the emergency brake which i was told was frozen in place.this emergency/parking brake was not used. How would it be frozen in place????

The lower control arm was defective, which caused the vehicle to sway to the right.
Purchased new tires and went to have the front alligned, and they advised they could not align due to the needed replacement of thelower ball joints. The vehile had around 64000 miles and i returned it to the dealer who said it did not nned the repair only allignment.prior to allignment the vehicle always drifted to the right side of the raod if the steering was released, it always seemed to be a strugle from drifting or pulling even with both hands of wheel to the right. The dealer alignment took care of the problem for about a month or two , but the problem has returned. Now i am wondering if the front end ball joints and arms are worn. This is a 1998 gmc jimmy 4wd 2 door sport utility it now has 77,000 miles has there been similar complaints?

While driving at any speed vehicle vibrated and a roaring noise was heard. Consumer, stated the problem was thepremature wear of front wheel bearing.consumerreplaced three sets of front wheel bearings within 70,000 miles of wear. The dealer andmanufacturer werenotified.
This is the 3rd wheel bearing replaced on this vehicle - 1 at 59,657 and 2 at 71460 miles.

Front wheel bearings failed. This causedwheels to become loose. Vehicle made a loud terrible grinding noise. Took vehicle to mechanic who indicatedbearings could have sheared off. Abs brake failed.also, u-joint failed causing grinding noise and vibration.

My foot with shoes or boots is 6 inches wide and i get stuck under the brake pedal (and against the console) when switching from gas to brake. Several times, i had to avoid the cars in front of me and hit the ditch. Now, i brake with my left foot in emergencies.

The contact owns a 1998 gmc jimmy. While driving approximately 25 mph the spare tire detached from the vehicle. The contact inspected the vehicle and noticed the hoist that held the spare tire in place underneath the vehicle was corroded and caused the spare tire to disengage. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing; however, the dealer was called and stated the spare tire hoist would need to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 105,000.
I purchased 4 new le mans brand (made by and warranted by firestone) replacement tires for my 1998 gmc jimmy. Thes tires are of the same size and have the same dot manufacturing code stamped upon them as do the tires involved in the firestone/ford recall. While no falure of these 4 tires has occurred has the investigators at nhtsa deturmined all of the different brand name tires manufactured by firestone (and there will be many). I have seen no media information detailing the specific defect (what material or manufacturing process went wrong) that allows the tread to separate from the tire body. How can i be assured that my vehicle is presently equipped with tires that are not defective?

After getting an oil change i was informed of a leak in my oil pan, as i got home the next morning i noticed that my car leaked out all the oil in the car resulting from a fault o-ring seal, also now having problems with the suspension as my idler arm is about to snap at any moment resulting in the lose of steering for the car.the car was taken to a mechanicbefore i purchased it and only one bushing was replaced instead of all of them at the same time, also the mechanic improperly replaced the front shocks as instead of replacing the grease bearings the mechanic used bolts to assemble and hold them in place resulting in an annoying sqeak in the front end of the car since the shocks cant be properly greased as there are not grease fittings.

The car while driving at a high speed, lost power, the transmission dropped into low gear, and would only proceed at a slow speed, this happened more than once, the service engine malfunction light came on and stayed on.i was told by the dealer that they could not detect the problem.the problem occured near, for the third time, near coral springs gmc and i tookthe car intothem immediately and they came up with transmissions codes on the computer.i was told to take the car back to king since the other dealer did not have a tranmission mechanic.king was contacted and i was told to bring the car in later , the engine malfunction light went off and it drove normally.the day i brought the car to king it occured again, and this time the symptoms were the same, but the instrument also went dead.king reported to me that the problem was not the transmission but the ignition switch which caused the computer to loose power, creating the transmission to downshift and, the car to loose engine power, and the instruments to fail.at high speed this creates some concern as you can imagine.they indicated it has happen on other vechiles.i contacted general motors since i consideredit a safety problem.i feel owners and other dealers should be notified, since apparently it is not easily recognized.thank you.
Last week truck lost all power and i could not get my key out of the ignition,once all power was back key came loose.i have had a problem with muffler since 1st month sounds like a hole in the exhaust and makes a loud ping sound ,dealer just told me i needed to replace muffler.when in reverse and backing out of driveway a loud clunk sound from front passenger side.have lost power 2 times while driving down the street.have also noticed that when i turn anything on in the car i am losing a significant amount of power .this includes blinkers,radio,a/c ,if they are all on my volts drop to almost 11.
Serious safety concern: tachometer and speedometer gauges are faulty. The needle for both gauges erratically goes from left to right and then back to left and stays at 0. This happened several times randomly while driving the vehicle. Currently it appears as if these gauges no longer function at all except with a brief on and then off again surge. The vehicle has lossed noticeable power during acceleration since the instrument cluster failure. Additionally, the ignition key remains stuck in the ignition, also since the failure of the instrument cluster panel. The service engine soon light appeared when the gauges ceased to function. Problem occurred after vehicle passed 65,000 miles on odometer. Vehicle unsafe to drive due to random faliure of instrument gauges and subsequent loss of power. Recall recommended due to safety concern.

The throttle mechanism sticks on all starts from zero mph when you try to start. Operates freely from that point.problem starts again when you come to a stop and need to get going again.sometimes the throttle sticks open.

Drive an 1998 gmc jimmy with around 172,000 miles on it (i know this is a lot of miles).had the local gm dealer work on my rear defroster (one of the clips fell off).after receiving the vehicle back from the dealer i turned my defroster on about two weeks later.the back window exploded like a shotgun after about 15-20 seconds.dealer says rear defroster voltage regulator must have went bad.i argued that a fuse should had blown before an explosion took place.gm complaint department also disagrees, saying that the vehicle is old and things like this happen.luckily,no one was standing by the rear window when it exploded because it probably would have killed them. If i'm wrong tell me i'm wrong but i believe gm is responsible for no only replacing the window but fixing the rear defroster voltage regulator.i hope this is an isolated case but maybe by reporting this i can prevent someone from getting hurt (including a gm technician).

My winshield wiper/washer fails without notice. I took it to my regular repair shop and was referred to the local gmc dealer account recall code #3023 from gm. When the dealer ran the computer check it was found that my specific vehicle was not listee for this recall even if it was on a different data base. Now they want $65 for the relay and $55 to install it. This sounds like bull to me. Once again gm puts out defective parts and when they get caught they want the consumer to pay for it.ak

98 gmc jimmy windshield wiper failure.
When windshield wipers are on intermitent wipe they will automatically just keep wiping as if they were on low/no intermitent. When i try to turn them off, they just keep on going for a good 10 wipes, or sometimes even more. Vehicle has 50,000 miles on it.

Noted issues with my 98 jimmy (purchased 12/97)that i have had to repair which i believe were defective parts: 1) 10/00 mileage=57248 replaced faulty ignition switch due to dash board lights not working2) not repaired to date:wipers have had occasions they did not work. I usually can get them working by turning them on/off a few times. Intermittent mode takes a long time(3-10 seconds) to start running in best scenario.3) both front reclining seat levers broke off(brittle metal rod)within first 3 years of usage. I have not replaced due to cost of replacing complete seat assemblies is only fix.4) 12/04 mileage=129,518throttle choke plate assembly disintegrated partially and jammed throttle open. This almost caused an accident as could not come to a complete stop while car was running. After broken piece worked its way past the valves i needed $1900 in cylinder head repairs.

I have a 1998 gmc s-15 jimmy.i've had a periodic problem with my windshield wipers not working.sometimes they won't come on at all when i need them; at other times they're working and stop working while i'm driving in the rain.this is extremely dangerous and has left me stranded in places waiting for them to start working again.at other times i've had to continue driving without wipers until i could find a place to pull over.i see from internet forums that this appears to be a common problem.in fact, gm recalled 1994-1997 models to replace the circuit board.however, the 1998 model has the same parts and the same problem, but they will not do anything.the dealer will not acknowledge that there's a problem with them, nor will gm customer service.i'm having this repaired at my own expense, but that does not address the issue of a known problem that could have more serious consequences before a person has an opportunity to get it repaired.
The windshield wipers, front and back, stop working with no warning. They can be on and stop working all together or not work at all.i have tried the different relay speeds and they still won't come on or continue working.it is a very seriuos driving hazard especially if it is raining heavy. You are required to pull over and wait until either the rain stops or the wipers start working again.

Windshield wipers fail to actuate on an intermittent basis with no discernable pattern. Frequency of failure is increasing. When the wipers do fail sometimes they will activate after 15-20 attempts to turn them on. At times only stopping and turning off the ignition swithch and restarting the vehicle will get the wipers to activate. Transmission fbegan failing with occassional but noticable late and hard shifts from first to second gear . Engine light code scan indicated a failure of the valve body. Replacement of the valve body fixed the problem , but the addtional torque put on the drivetrain from the hard shifts most probably caused the failure of the rear u-joint as well.
Windshield wipers will quit in the middle of a rainstorm.they do this quite often.i pull off the road, open the hood of the car and wiggle the gray wire leading into the windshield motor which seems to get them working again, all the while getting soaked.i proceed down the road a few miles and it does it again. How come the recall is only for gmc jimmy's through 1997?

The windshield wipers do not work most of the time, occasionally work intermittently, andthe few times they do work, will stop in mid-cycle blocking view through the windshield. Gmc has recalled all jimmys from 1993-1997 with the same problem. However, they have not included the 1998 in the same recall. I checked the certificate on my door - my car was manufactured in 02/1998.this problem is creating a safety concern for my daughter and i while in the car. I live in florida where it rains daily during the summer. I called gmc on 5/12/03 to check into the recall on the 1993-1997 jimmy's. I spoke to two customer service representatives. Defective windshield wiper controller board, 1998 gmc jimmy.this item was recalled on all similar suv's for several years and ended in 1997.my windshield wipers have the same symptoms as those noted in the recall for the previous models.intermittent functioning of the windshield wipers.often the wipers fail to operate at all.wiggling the socket connector on the windshield wiper motor will restore function for short durations (1 to 2 days at most).

Dt;the contact owns a 1998 gmc jimmy. The contact states that the wiper module makes the wipers freeze up and quit working when it's raining. Gmc did conduct recalls on other vehicles for this problem just not for his vin.

Driving in heavy rains on the interstate when my wipers just stopped.i had to break heavy and get off the side of the road in heavy traffic.i waited until the rain subsided and then drove home. The next morning they worked okay and after about 20 miles stopped again.this happens constantly and i don't know if and when or how long they will work.

I'm not sure if this is moot, but i thought i'd alert you to a problem i had in the past.i had intermittent failure with my windshield wipers for my 1998 gmc jimmy, vin = [xxx].i noticed there had been a wiper recall for gmc's with other years, but not for my year or my vin.i called the dealer and was told my wipers were not recalled.i ended up getting the wiper motor replaced, but that cost me over $200.00. The windshield wipers on my 1998 gmc jimmy are sporadically not working. When they are turned on they will wipe half my windshield then stop then i have to turn off my wiper blades and turn them back on to wipe to the full extent of my windshield which is where they will stop again and must repeat this process several times to get a complete wipe. My wipers too will fail to stop wiping even though i have turned the switch to the off position. It has become more and more of a safety issue as time as worn on. I have had to pull off to the side of the road at times and completely turn my jimmy off to get the blades to stop. This is a recurring problem, the blades will also fail to stop when i clean my windshield with the washer fluid. I have done some research and found that gm did a recall on 1994-1997 jimmys for this issue, i have also read that several other people have been experiencing the same problems with their 1998 jimmys. I believe that gm need to extend the recall to include 1998 jimmys as this is a serious safety issue. I found myself stuck between an 18 wheeler and a cement bumper right after it had rained and my wipers failed to work which caused my vision to be extremely impaired and i was trying to get the wipers to work so that i could see and near slammed into the cement bumper. While this didn't result in an accident it very easily could have. I am requesting for some assistance with this issues as i feel this is a manufacturer related problem, and since their has also been a recall for this same issue for the model year earlier.
I have experienced problems w/my windshield wipers since last year. They will stop in the middle of operating and then sometimes not turn off at all. I was not aware of the recall occuring on the models w/the year ending in 1997. So i contacted gmc and they denied that my vehicle could be repaired under the recall since the year is 1yr later. Now i work for a major countertop kitchen appliance co. And i know that there could be a cut off in months not just years. I am very upset to see that my vehicle has the same problem as the recall states and the manufactuer is not willing to fix the problem. They directed me to a dealer that wants to charge me for the diagnois test and the repair which i am unwilling to do. I believe that gmc needs to look further into the recall again on the year 1998 gmc jimmys
While driving in rain windshield wipers failed. This was an intermittent problem.the truck was taken to a dealership, andmechanic informed the owner that truck is not covered under recall 98v150000. Windshield wipers could be repaired but at owner's expense.

Rear windshield wiper quits intermittently until eventually it stopped working altogether.this is a safety concern since you can't see out of the rear window when it rains or when the vehicle gets dirty (we live on back roads)

In a bad rain storm this morning, and not for the first time my wipers just stopped. I almost wrecked and had to pull over to the left side of a four lane highwaybecause i couldn't see until they just started up again. I was very late for work. I never know when they are going to stop. My sister has the same model , make and year car. Her wipers had been stopping on her for two years off and on. Hers finally just quit completely. Even after all the times of taking it in to be fixed. One of my work associates has the same trouble with his gmc van.
The windshield wipers sporatically will not operate. If it should rain, the wiper may or may not operate. A recall on this problem has been issued for vehicles up to 1997. However, i have a 1998 with an identical problem.

My son was driving his 1998 gmc jimmy. Vin [xxx]in a heavy rain when suddenly the wipers came to a complete stop while driving on the highway at 55 mph causing a near zero visibility condition. I've checked nhtsa for complaints and find many reports for this situation. My mechanic called a gm dealer and was told there was a recall to replace a defective circuit board. I contacted a gm dealership and was told the recall extended only out to 1997 vehicles. My complaint is similar to one submitted to this forum under odi id number 10016222. 1998 gmc s15 jimmy truck,defective encoder motor. On 3 separate occasions during snow storms the consumer had to rely on the 2-wheel drive to navigate on the roads covered in snow and ice without the benefit of the added traction of 4-wheel drive.once the consumer was unable to shift from 4-wheel drive back to 2-wheel drive. This past winter, the consumer lost traction and skidded out of control. The dealer replaced the wheel cover.
