Airbag light on, dealer replaced inflatable restraint arming sensor and diagnoctic resv. Module.

No deployment of air bag during collision, resulting in injuries.

Airbag light remains illuminated on the dash oncevehicle is running. Dealer has been contacted. Please provide further details.

Airbag light on, dealer replaced inflatable restraint arming sensor and diagnoctic resv. Module.

Air bag light came on and stays on.dealer charged $68.00 for evaluation and advised that an air bag derm module is required to correct the defect at an additional cost of $450.00.the dealer indicates that the air bag probablywould not deploy in a collision and even indicated that they could not rule out that the air bag might deploy while driving without a collisionto trigger deployment.gmc refuses to correct this safety defect at no cost to the owner and has only offered a 50/50 split.i feel that gmc should be replacing this defective system at 100% their cost.your web site says that if a safety-related defect exists in a motor vehicle, the manufacturer must fix it at no cost to the owner.

Have had multiple problems with no brake lights, hazard lights or driving lights. Vehicle also has been in two front end collisions and air bags did not deploy in either wreck. Vehicle was looked at by a dealer and could not be fixed.

Abs brakes failed, vehicle lost control, resulting in a head-on collision. Upon impact, driver's/passenger's air bags failed to deploy, resulting in injuries. In addition, ignition locked up/fuel gauge and alternator failed.

While driving at 40mpha vehicle came out in front suddenly , consumer hit other vehicle head on. Upon impact, dual airbags did not deploy , cause was unknown.

Comsumer's wife was involved in an head-on collision with animpact of approximately 30-35 mph. Driver's air bag did not deploy. Dealer notified and informed consumer that the air bag shouldhave deployed. Manufacturer informed consumer that they sawnothingwrong, and they are closing the investigation.

When hit at 35mph in the front center of the vehicle air bags did not deploy. Dealer notified.

Consumer was involved in a head-on collision traveling 55 mph and the driver side air bag did not deploy.alsothe front end has over $9000of damage.

While driving 35 mph the consumer was involved in a head on collision. The air bags did not deploy upon impact. The driver sustained neck and back injuries. Please provide additional information.

Consumer was waiting at an intersection to make a left turn, controlled by a traffic light, when another vehicle coming from the left side, ran the red light and hit consumer vehicle slightly to the left at approximately25-30 mp. Driver's air bag failed to deploy. Driver sustained injuries.dealer notified.

The contact owns a 1997 gmc jimmy.the contact stated that the air bag failed to deploy when he was involved in a frontal crash.the vehicle was destroyed.the driver sustained minor injuries to his arms.a police report was filed.the dealer had not inspected the vehicle and it was sent to a salvage yard.the speed was unknown and the vin was invalid.the current and failure mileages were 135,000.

The truck i have is 1997 gmc jimmy 4x4 slt model i purchased the truck in 2000 knowing it was a pre owned vehicle for the first two years the vehicle was nice but the next two years i have have had nothing but troubles so far with this vehicle i have replaced 1) ignition switch that costed 700.oo 2) pulley 3) alternator 4) heater core 5) compressor for a/c is gone havent replaced 6) fuel pump is gone havent replaced 7)winshield wipers work when they want to usual on clear days but when its storming they dont work which has resulted in me getting drenched 8) tailgate doenst want to go up i have had two years of problems with my truck and still contine to do so i purchased my truck with 21,252 mi and i now have 70,329 mi i need ball joints which i have not replaced in my opinion this is the worst vehicle i have ever ownmed and i believe ever made.

Air bag light came on and stayed on.dealer said air bag module needed to be replaced or the air bag may not deploy correctly in an accident.

Upper & lower ball joint snapped while driving had to replace both along with idler arm pitman arm & tie rod ends , had received notice about possible failure on these when i called gmc they reported my car was not included in this possible recall. Cost of 1500.00 also fuel pump failed cost of 700.00 now driver side door is defected will not close , probems with electrical system locks ,windows, lights interior & exterior, wipers will only work occasionally, fuel gauge sticks.

Dt: on 5/24/05 caller was driving at 40 mph on level ground on the highway andthe spare tire fell out from underneath the vehicle. The cable that holds the spare onto the vehicle broke and allowed spare to break away and fell onto the highway.the windshield wipers have caused many problems in the past as well. The wipers would start and stop unannounced and had to be repaired and the blinkers would come on and go off on their own.the consumer believed there was a general problem with the electrical system.the car was regularly maintained.each time the consumer filled the vehicle with gas, the inside of the vehicle would smell like gas and for a couple of days, the gas gauge did not work. *sc

Transmission failed on interstate and the emergency flashers failed, transmission has been replaced on two occasions, the electrical system experiences continual malfunctions (emergency flashers, brake lights, warning buzzer).*mjs

The paint of the car is chipping, the electical is not working (brake lights, turn signals, and interior lights), the windshield wipers are not working (motor), and the fuses keep breaking, and the seat beal buckles are not working as well.

1997 gmc jimmy battery drain. After vehicle sits for a couple hours it will not start. Has new (not rebuilt) alternator, starter, battery. Still won't start most of the time. Battery drains completely if vehicle sits overnight. As soon as i jump the vehicle, it starts immediately. Nothing i do will help.vehicle has done this for8years and i can't fix it so i don't even put license it anymore. I can't sell it because nobody wants a broke down car. It still looks and drives great. I would like gm to fix it. There are also other things that appear to be factory defaults like front suspension and more i won't go into now.

Vehicle stalls out while going down the road, i was going sixty miles per hour and vehicle just stalled out, going twenty miles per hour and vehicle stalls out. Have had it hooked up to computer and cannot be diagnosed unless it is happening at time of diagnosis. This is a definate safety issue when you are going down road and vehicle just stalls out without warning. This is a constant occurrence.

Have had multiple problems with no brake lights, hazard lights or driving lights. Vehicle also has been in two front end collisions and air bags did not deploy in either wreck. Vehicle was looked at by a dealer and could not be fixed.

I lost power while driving my 1997 gmc jimmy on the highway.it just stopped running.i pushed it to the side of the road and called for a tow truck.when we got to the dealer, the vehicle started.*nlm

The vehicle caught fire, consumer was informed the fire started near the cigarette lighter.

The vehicle is experiencing multiple electrical problems including the emergengy flasher, brake lights, and warning buzzer.nlm

While driving vehicle stalled.consumer was unable to restart vehicle. It had no power or lights, and was unable to be jumped start by another vehicle. It was towed to the dealer for inspection, andmechanic determined that the alternator and the battery needed to be replaced. Consumer informed the mechanicthat this problemoccurred more than once, and had not been resolved.

My vehicle lost all power while driving down the freeway, losing steering and brakes and almost causing a crash.the vehicle had to be towed in to the dealer and it was determined that the battery leaked from the positive cable, running down the side mount cable to the starter, eating through the starter and alternator.this has happened to 3 other friends of mine as well with the exact same thing happening.my brother in law is a certifed ase master mechanic for ge capital fleet and they have had over 28 of the same reported problems.the dealership has also had several vehicles reported with the same condition.with battery acid blowing all over the engine compartment, i'm wondering if other compnents have been comprimised, espically the frame of the vehicle.

Abs brakes failed, vehicle lost control, resulting in a head-on collision. Upon impact, driver's/passenger's air bags failed to deploy, resulting in injuries. In addition, ignition locked up/fuel gauge and alternator failed.

Alternator failed twice.

This vehicle has been a nightmare...unfortunately it was a spur of the moment purchase.although used, with only 39,000 miles, i thought i would be ok since it had an extended warranty till 72,000.i have replaced both upper and lower ball joints, idler arm, alternator, belt tensioner, ignition switch, 4wd sensors, gas gauge sensor, left rear axle shaft and both rear axle bearings.at least these were all covered under the warranty, but not the rental cars for all the time the truck spent in the shop.now the vehicle has 90,000 miles and the dealership is telling me that the recall for the ball joints does not pertain to my truck (the vin # is not included), the transmission dipstick is rusted (i've seen several complaints but no recall), my accelerator pedal sticks severely (also numerous complaints), and i've already replaced (out of pocket cost of $1700) a complete rear end.i owe more than this vehicle is worth...but will need to get rid of it soon because i do not feel safe driving my son around in it.many of these problems could have caused a serious accident...

Alternator failed.

The engine abruptly quits (as if turned off).this has happened while climbing long grades.altitude has been 7000-10000 feet.outside temperature has ranged from 65-85 degrees.each time after pulling off the road and coming to a stop the engine starts after a brief time and continues normally.dealer has driven the car for extended periods and has been unable to replicate the problem.three times the engine has quit while in heavy high speed traffic which causes some concern about safety.the problem appears to be computer caused as it is so abrupt - no stutter, stumble or cough.

Transmission failure / replaced transmission - upper & lower ball joint failure / replaced upper &lower ball joints - rear window wiper failure / inoperable at this point - extremely expensive replacements with no old parts available at this point. Events leading up to failure i can only attribute to severely poor manufacturing of products, there was no operating misuse or abuse. Also other parts that have failed and have since been replaced are the: alternator, fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator and cooling system failures.

97 jimmy. Electrical ignition failure. 5x at least. Driving along and , for no reason, all power cuts out completely. Drift to side of road, stop, and vehicle usually starts again either right away, or in a couple minutes. [xxx] dangerous. 2 different gmc dealers don't have a clue.information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

The contact owns a 1997 gmc jimmy. While driving approximately 45 mph, the vehicle stalled and restarted after numerous attempts. An independent mechanic stated that the ignition switch needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired and the manufacturer was notified. The vin was unavailable. The approximate failure mileage was 180,000.

Apparently there is a short in the windshield wipers.i was driving my car, and in the middle of a hail storm, suddenly the wipers stopped working.i had to pull over to a covered area, and jiggle the wires to get it going again.now it doesn't work at all.i took it to my mechanic, and he said that many jimmy's and blazers have had to have the wiper module replaced.i haven't been able to repair it yet, b/c apparently the part alone costs over $150.if so many of these suv's are having this problem and it's a very dangerous problem, i was just wondering why there hasn't been a recall for this.

The paint of the car is chipping, the electical is not working (brake lights, turn signals, and interior lights), the windshield wipers are not working (motor), and the fuses keep breaking, and the seat beal buckles are not working as well.

Defective engine and throttle for a 1997 gm jimmy, vin [xxx]. While attempting to deactivate the cruise control, by pressing the brake pedal, the vehicle continued to accelerate.it was later determined that the cruise control module was the cause of the problem.the consumer hadother components of the vehicle replaced which include the brake pad sensor, brake pads, electrical wiring.on the day of delivery the vehicle's left front wheel assembly separated from the vehicle.this failure was due to the loss of four major bolt which held the assembly to the chassis.information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

Power accessory circuit breaker (20) gets extremely hot after power windows and power seat fails to operate. At same time, when hit a bump in road, interior lights flicker. Burned fingers trying to remove breaker before fire may have started. Dealer guessed and replaced driver seat electric switch, but still gets hot and fails.

Have had multiple problems with no brake lights, hazard lights or driving lights. Vehicle also has been in two front end collisions and air bags did not deploy in either wreck. Vehicle was looked at by a dealer and could not be fixed.

Brake lights came on and would not go out until the brake light fuse blew out. Replaced fuse and brake lights would not go out. This happened about 2-3 months ago and i took this vehicle to jones chevrolet in sumter, sc. They said they adjusted the brake light switch and corrected the problem. This time i took the vehicle to tim's auto pro in dalzell, sc to get it checked out. Tim found that the wiring from the fuse block up under and behind the dash had shorted out due to the way it was installed originally at the factory. Part of the wiring harness was chaffed in several places and the wiring melted together keeping our brake lights on. He removed the dash and associated items to get to the harness and repaired it so our brakes work and there are no shorts. My concern is that gmc should be paying for this repair since the harness was not installed properly when the vehicle was built. If by some chance the wiring had caught fire under the dash while mywife was driving her gmcjimmy down the road there could have been serious complications or loss of life. Please check for me with gmc and see if this is a problem that has been reported on other gmc jimmy or blazer products.

Shortly after adjusting the front passenger power seat control i noted a trail of smoke from beneath the seat and the smell of burning plastic. I immediately opened the fuse panel and attempted to remove the main fuse. The upper main buss that controls the power seat motors, power doors, and anti-theft system was so hot that i could not touch it without burning my fingers. I had to use a pen knife to remove it. No other fuses were affected. Following removal of the fuse my turn signals, emergency flashers, and rear stop lights are all inoperative. These elements are on a separate circuit from the main buss i removed. I believe that had i not gotten the fuse removed when i did the electrical short would have resulted in a serious fire.

While driving at night, consumer states' if you pull highbeam switch towards you, the rear brake lights illuminate.but if you push switch in the rear tail lights will go out.please provide any further information.mr

While driving smoke came out of the dashboard. Driver pulled over, and within three minutesvehicle blew up.fire department extinguished the fire.

Problems with vehicle's ball joints.mrthe consumer heard a sound coming fromt the left front tire area.the radiator, power steering pump, oil cooler lines and engine all leaked.

While driving vehicle stalled intermittently.consumerpulled over, and had vehicle towed.dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem.

The 1997 gmc jimmy just shuts off. This occurs at no special times and with no identifiable circumstances preceding the shutdown. The engine and all control systems simply stop. This has happened numerous times and there is no ryhme nor reason for the failure. It has happened many times in a single evening and then gone months before recurring. Computer diagnoses, no codes found by mechanic. Since it has always failed while the vehicle was in motion, usually at highway speeds, controlling the vehicle becomes a real concern. Loss of power steering can easily cause a loss of control and a serious accident. The jimmy always restarts easily after ten seconds or so. Of course at 70-75 miles per hours that can seem like a very long time indeed.*la

Reddish liquid leaking from under engine and engine appeared to be overheating, temperature needle going all the way up, then down, bad smell.mechanic told me he has seen this problem with these vehicles before due to dex-cool used which gunks up the cooling system. Water pump had to be replaced due to the damage from this stuff. I was very disappointed in the response i received from the people from gmc who apparantly know about this problem and are doing nothing about for their customers.

A/c compressor failuresother- intake manifold coolant leak due to use of plastic intake manifoldmaster cylinder failure (loss of pedal/leal). Replaced master cylinder short time later same problem and dealer reported failure of anti lock computer at cost of $1200.00. Repair refused and after a few weeks had them recheck master and they replaced the unit. No problem several months later.

Heater started to fail at about 50,000 miles, no heat at all by about 80,000 miles. Have been told the heater core needs to be replaced; also have been informed that this is a common problem.*la

Water pump failed resulting in leakage.mjs

Vehicle continuously overheats due to corrosion inengine that plugs up the radiatorheater cord.

I have had to replace 1 upper ball joint and two lower ones , i was told my vin numberdid not match for the recall listed on your site.i have also had to replace both of my oil cooling lines that started leaking badly, this is part of the towing package offered by gmc. *nlm

I have had my jimmy serviced per the owners manual maintenance schedule and only at a gmc dealership, martin gmc in lake charles la. In january of 1999 the cooling system started getting a heavy build-up of rust deposits in the coolant reservoir and radiator. I brought it in tomartin gmc on 1/21/99 (30,253 miles) and was told that it was caused by a break down of the dex-cool coolant in the system and that this was normal and would cause no problems later. I brought my jimmy to and independent auto repair shop that same day and was told that the cooling system was badly rusted and it needed to be flushed and refilled. I brought it back to martin gmc and was again told that this rust was normal and would cause no problems. After this the jimmy was serviced by martin gmc 3 more times in 1999.on 5/2/00 (43,773 miles)i brought the jimmy in and had it serviced. I was told that the transmission level couldnt be checked because they were unable to get the dipstick out of the dip stick tube.the rubber/plastic gasket on the dipstick had heated and sealed to the metal dip stick tube. Soon after this, while driving the jimmy, i started hearing loud water flowing sounds inside under the front dash. I brought it back to martin gmc 5/31/00 to have this checked out and was told that the cooling system was clogged with rust and needed to be flushed. They said that they believed the wrong type of coolant was put in the system causing this. I told them that i had made them aware of the rust problem long before now and that i believe that this rust problem also caused poor cooling of the engine which resulted in the problem with the dip stick.

The coolant temperature gauge would rise and fall quickly in an erratic manner.upon inspection the radiator was found to be full of a thick reddish substance.the mechanic said that this is a know issue related to the dex cool coolant.he also said that there is a tsb that instructs the mechanic to flush and replace the fluid.my complaint is with the oem for not informing me of the problem with the coolant.if i would have known of the problem, then i would have had the service performed before damaging my coolant system.the damage cost me about $2000 in repairs to replace the radiator, water pump and sensors. *nlm

Coolant has failed and is gelling up in engine.gm has stated the coollant should last 5 years or 100000 miles.the coolant system now needs an acid flushh and repair parts which will cost $440.gm states this is m=not a flaw , but the dealer states that it is only occurring in the jimmy and chevy s-10 vehicles.they have received a serevice bulletin on how to deal with the problem.

When both back windows are down and driving at approximately55-65 mphvehicle will shake and steering wheel will vibrate . There is nosolution, but vibration will stop if all the windows are up or if all are down.also,at only 48,000 miles rust is developing incooling system possibly due to radiator . Dealer claims rust is normal, and that the cause is due to engine block.but, the engine block is made out of aluminum which does not rust.

My car began leaking a significant amount of oil in front of and behind the left front tire.my local dealer suggested i bring the car in to be inspected.it was diagnosed as having a badly leaking oil cooling line.they said the parts for this repair are on a 7-10 day back order because the problem is so common. I am extremely concerned that this is such a common problem in vehicles of my class, but gmc has not recalled or sent out a service notice.i am really glad that i noticed the leak when i did.i was about an hour away from leaving on a trip.i am 7 months pregnant and would have been traveling with my 3 year old daughter.that would have been a very difficult situation for me to be in, had the oil line blown.i had noticed approximately 12 drips of oil on my garage floor where i park the car, over the last 30 days.that wasn't much oil compared the the grapefruit sized puddles now leaking from my car.i think that gmc is aware that this is a serious problem and they should send a service notice to their patrons.

Engine cooling line to filter andcooling line toradiator are leaking, dealer notified. Feel free to provide any further information.

While driving, transmission malfunctions and will not go into reverse or overdrive.also, transmission fluid became thick.consumer states now she is experiencing problems with the radiator losing coolant.

Transmission has a history of "shifting hard" between 1st and 2nd, especially when warm.during a routine oil change, mechanic noticed a "rusted trans dip stick". Though protested by gm as a defect, extended warenty covered.i had to go elsewhere for trans flush, dealer did not have equipment.problem persists through 2000.trasmission overheated on hwy causing overflow and slipage.dealer found "rust in radiator" and "debrise in trans".had to replace radiator/flush engine and trans. At my expense 1/2001.now, with warmer weather, trans. Oil is "varnished" and shift hard between 1 & 2nd again just 5000 miles later. Engine lite on.found multible simular complaintsat http://www.thecomplaintstation.com/g/gm_toc.htm.gm is not recognizing what appears to be an expensive, chronic problem with transmission and associated cooling components.i am not prepared to spend another $1-$2k on a $30k that has been well cared for when gm knows about these problems.i called gm customer relations and sent letters to gm directors and got no intellect or sympathy assigned to my case. Please read the web site, there are many cases of 1995-1997 jimmy/s10/blazerswith the exact symptoms.

I had complaints of engine knock since purchase new, dealer comment could not duplicate, finally took to another dealer and the could hear knock, dealer installed new crankshaft, vehicle still has knock in engine, also had to have radiator cleaned and coolant jug replaced due to rusty contamination, abs causes skids at slow speeds on wet pavement

The anti-lock brakes activated without warning, which caused the consumer to lose control of the steering, and then the engine stopped.

The engine is defective and the vehicle cuts off while driving with no notification, dealer urges to drive vehicle until it gets worse. Dealer cannot duplicate the problem.

Pan gasket failed causing transmission to leak. Mjs

Consumerwas driving, stopped and heard noise, no steering, no warning, belt tensioner broke, causing the engine belt to come off.dealer replaced the tensioner belt.tensioner breaking wascaused by fatigued metal.manufacturer cannot duplicate the problem.

The vehicle stalled intermittently when accelerating or braking.

Vehicledies when consumer is coming to or taking off from a stop.it also dies when he is not driving at a certain speed.

Oil seal leakage.

While driving consumer looked in the rear view mirror and noticed smoke in the road and pulled over to the side of the road and when he opened the hood, there were flames engulfing the engine, consumer then closed the hood and moved away from the vehicle. Ohio traffic crash report (10-89-383).*yd

Engine shuts off when leaving signal light, turning or changing direction of travel. Also has occurred when traveling at highway speeds.cannot make it happen, it just happens whenever it wants to happen. Numerous complaintshave already been reported;816911, 863413, 825902, 730158, just to list a few.this needs to be corrected before a fatality occurs.in one instance, if i had not been aware of the possiblity of this occuring i would have paniced an d been broadsided!as it was, i was able to steer hard right and paralell the traffic that would have hit me if i had stopped!

Experienced problem with stalling only at higher altitudes. Vehicle been in dealer shop on five occasions, and unable to resolveproblem. Feel free to provide any further details.

The dealer knew about the defects to this vehicle and refused to fix them after receiving 3 separate estimates. 2 days after i repeatedly went back to the dealership to report these safety hazards the dealer continued to refuse to fix the problems and i had a car accident due to the defective vehicle. The dealer compliance board has a current case against the dealer and he has only agreed to take his vehicle back. The dealer has requested the damage from the motor vehicle accident not be fixed by the insurance company. The damage prior to the sale was so extensive from water or flood damage that the engine is completely ruined. It will not pass emissions. My fear is that the next unsuspecting consumer will be deceived by this dealer and this vehicle and i believe the next person will not be as lucky. I should be dead right now. The airbag never deployed and i believe it should have, which may also indicate that their is also something wrong with the airbag system. There may not even be an air bag in this vehicle even though it states there is one. This dealer will get thisvehicle back and i am sure that instead of selling it as a salvage vehicle he will again slap a price tag on it and re-sell it immediately without fixing it.dt

Vehicle suddenly accelerated when idiling. Dealer has been contacted, and has replaced fuel injectors. Please provide further details.the heating system malfunctioned due to heating core failure. The a/c was not blowing warm air. There was a clicking noise from the engine area because the power steering pump was leaking fluid. The vehicle leans to the left due to torsion bar out of adjustment. Front left and right axle seals were leaking. Transmission was leaking. Back window had air leak. The rear wiper sticks due to wiper motor failure. Front end makes clunking noise due to ball joint failure. There was clunk noise when shifting into gear due to rear d-shaft and u-joint failures. The intake gasket was leaking and was replaced. The throttle sticks. The serpentine belt failed and was replaced.

Windshield wipers do not work all the time. I was in a bad rainstorm last night and had to pull off the road because we couldn't see anything. Scary - this is a potential big law suit for gmc if anyone dies in an accident due to this common complaint. My gmc mechanic revealed that this happens on almost all gmc jimmy's, yet there is no recall to replace the defective part to date.transmission - slipped badly. I paid to have it replaced and sometimes it still slips. This transmission repair shop said that this is common with the jimmy, as well as a faulty gas gauge, faulty ball joints and oxygen sensors. I did have to replace the oxygen sensor, but i consider that normal repairs.

Transmission failure / replaced transmission - upper & lower ball joint failure / replaced upper &lower ball joints - rear window wiper failure / inoperable at this point - extremely expensive replacements with no old parts available at this point. Also other parts that have failed and have since been replaced are the: alternator, fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator and cooling system failures.

Carpet--hole. Automatic transmission--leak at pump, replaced.

When applying abs brakes when on a icy surface, power steering locks up until you come to a full stop. Also air bag did not deploy upon direct frontal impact at 30 mph into slate mountain. When changing a tire, jack slipped out of the locked position and dropped the vehicle.

The paint of the car is chipping, the electical is not working (brake lights, turn signals, and interior lights), the windshield wipers are not working (motor), and the fuses keep breaking, and the seat beal buckles are not working as well.

The head lights keep shutting off as you are driving at night time then it will switch over to the day time running lights, this occurs every time you drive at nighttime with the lights on, we do not know what to do to fix this problem so we have not brought it in.

*sc

Consumer states vehicle does not have any rear brake lights and no hazard lights. Dealer notified. Ts

Consumer complained about abrake light problem. Brake lights were operating poorly. Each time consumer's husband put in a fuse it blew out.consumer had not takenvehicle to adealer/mechanic because it cost too much.consumer'shusband went to the weband found a lot of complaints of the same nature.consumer felt that should not have to pay forrepairs because there weremany complaints onweb about the same problem.

Brake light failure, no lower brake lights researched part to repair is at a cost of $340.00 without labor.....

Headlamp dimmer switch failed.mjs

When the headlights are 'on' they compete with the running lights.simply, the lights flash between the headlights and the running lights.this has happened numerous times over the past 2 years.i have replaced the light switch 3 times and when it gets 'hot', this happens again.

Consumer statedmalfunctioned switch was causing the tail lights to fail. Dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem.*tc

I own this 1997 gmc jimmy that i purchased from my mother in december 2004. I had a problem with thesignal lights, they just quit working. I took it to the local gm dealer and at that time no recall had been issued for this reason. I will need toreplace theswitch and assembly.i know that there is a recall for gmc and chevrolet minivans for this same reason. It is my feeling that the 1997 jimmy should also be included in the recall or a separate recall should be made for the models using the same assembly as the 1997 jimmy.

I own this 1997 gmc jimmy that i purchased new.in july 2004 at 51,500 miles, i had a problem with the brake, signal, hazard flasher lights, they just quit working and i had a near collision because of it twice before i realized that they were not working.i carried it to the local gm dealer and at that time no recall had been issued for this reason. I paid them $427.45 for a replacement assy. Installed. Fuel gauge would read full or half full even though tank would be empty.i set my trip mileage for more than a year and would put more gas in about every 300 miles.dealer charged me $400 to remove the tank and replace a sensor that sits on top of the tank.had vapor lock problems a few days after that.

Please be sure and cross-reference gmc jimmy with chevy blazer!! this is the 4th time the fuel pump has failed. I've had related trouble with the fuel gauge and system with no further info from the dealer. The last time it occured, i was driving when the engine failed.good thing it was a side street and not the highway. This time, it was stopped and failed to start again. This situation is not only ridiculous but also dangerous.

Fuel pump on 97 gmc replaced at cost of over $600.this is second fuel pump for gmc jimmy that i replaced...first at crawford gmc in el paso, tx at cost of over $400 back in 1997.the design flaw of this fuel pump is that it is located inside the fuel tank and the gas acts as a "cooling" fluid for the pump...gmc nor chevy ever mention that fuel tanks must be maintained at a minimum of 1/4 tank of gas or the pump will over heat & eventually fail...this item should be a recalled for poor design, faulty engineering, and potential for "over-heating" inside fuel tank!i can be reached anytime to clarify this matter at 915-593-5144...cpt burgess.

The fuel pump was replaced four times.

We, as the purchasers, did not know that the part was defective until we went to put gas and were stranded with a dry tank and the fuel guage reading half full.the estimated cost for repair is $1,000.the defect was present at the moment we drove the vehicle off the dealership lot.i have since discovered many other complaints concerning this compenet and its tendancy to easily fail.i feel this is dangerous beacuse if i run out of gas, through no fault of my own, someone could hit my vehicle causing injury to both parties, one of which would be my two year old son.i have had this car for 5 days and it has not worked properly for all 5 days!

Abs brakes failed, vehicle lost control, resulting in a head-on collision. Upon impact, driver's/passenger's air bags failed to deploy, resulting in injuries. In addition, ignition locked up/fuel gauge and alternator failed.

My gas guage is not working.the mechanics at a local dealership informed me that the computer sensor is not working.my jimmy only has less than 45,000 when this sensor was non-functional.the part runs around $500.00 and to get it installed it was going to cost around $735.00.this faulty sensor could cause me to have a major accident on a freeway because i never know how much gas is in my tank.i have a cousin that has the same problem with his gmc truck.i believe that gmc better look at this sensor in the gas tank and should take action to recall and correct vehicles that have this problem.please report this to gmc and post to see if any other individuals nationwide are having the same problem.thank you.

My gas gauge is not working properly.i was informed today a sensor was needed at a cost of $536.70 for one part.the total cost for installation will be $762.00 + tax.i only have 46,815 miles on this vehicle.i feel this is an excessive amount for a part.with less than 50,000 miles on my jimmy, this gas guage should not have failed so soon.curious to know if other gmc products are having the same problem.i know of one other gmc vehicle with the same problem.i would like to get this repaired, but am unemployed at the present time and cannot afford almost a $1,000. Repair bill.last year i put almost a $1,000 in tires and a tie rod had to be replaced along with break replacements.this vehicle has been driven mostly long distance highway miles with no stopping.i still have sounds in my steering and a loud cluncking sound at times.please respond to inform me if other gmc's are having gas guage problems.thank you.

Fuel gauge does not indicate accurately at low fuel states.as fuel approaches empty (with 1/8 - 1/4 actual fuel remaining in tank), gauge begins to erroneously indicate progressively higher fuel quantities in the tank until a point where the gauge is indicating almost full, when in reality, the tank is almost empty.the obvious implication is that a motorist who is not paying close attention could be left stranded without fuel in the vehicle.

Consumer called complaining about having problems with windshield wipers stopping in the middle of real bad rain storms. Also, gas gauges are not working properly. Manufacturer was not contacted at the time of this call.**new information**consumer called back in on 08/05/03 and advised that dealer serviced vehicle for recall remedy 01i018000/ball joints in 07/03.at that time, dealer was supposed to check wiper problem but did not.consumer also added that vehicle was purchased in the united states.

While driving 70 mphspeedometer was stuck, and did not show the speed that vehicle was traveling, especially whenpassing through a school zone.

Upper ball joint separatedand the wheel was cut through causing the tire to go flat. The vehicle has been well maintained and the front end had been checked a few months earlier by a competent mechanic when new shocks were installed. Two weeks later a friend alerted me to "gm product safety campaign"# 01048. This was an alert to upper ball joints separating without warning on some '96-'97 jimmys, bravadas and blazers. I inquired at my dealer to see if my vehicle qualified and was told "no, there are no open recalls on your vin.". I called the gmc customer assistance center at 1-800-gmc-8782and spoke with "lisa" who assigned me reference number 056 42 894. Gm confirmed they "can do nothing for me, as there are no open recalls on your truck." "it was built at a different plant and a different supplier provided the ball joints than the ones in the recall." sounds like a load of crap to me. If i sound overly angered by a ball joint failure it might be because i have had nothing but grief with this vehicle and am tired of being a victim. The transmission was pulled under warranty at 28000 miles, yet i had to have it pulled again at myexpense ($1474) at 52500miles. Two of the four o2 sensors have failed, the radiator was full of the infamous "missisippi mud" dex-cool sludge, the service engine light comes on at least once a month, the serpentine tensioner fell apart at 37k miles and had to be replaced again at 58k, the wipers frequently won't turn on unless you hit the mist lever as you hit a bump (common according to the edmunds.com site), and last week my abs went out from what the trouble code diagnosed as a bad left front speed sensor. I'll have to drive it with the sensor unplugged for now because i've already put over $2000 in repairs into this thing during calendar year 2001 alone, and i'm tapped out. Same with the wiper condition.

While driving, transmission malfunctions and will not go into reverse or overdrive.also, transmission fluid became thick.consumer states now she is experiencing problems with the radiator losing coolant.

Vehicle unable to shift into reverse because water got intotransmission while parked ingarage. Manufacturer was notified. Feel free to provide any further information.

Dt:the contact stated theupper and lower ball jointson both sidesbroke while driving in a parking lot.the vehicle had to be towed to the dealership, where the ball joints and the anti lock brake sensors were replaced.contacted the manufacturer, there werenhtsa recalls01i018000 and 01v200000, but this vehicle was not included in the recalls due to vin.in addition, this vehicleexperienced several other problems as well.the left door broke offwhile in the driveway, the male joint of the door broke whenshutting the door.also, the transmission and anti lock brakes were replaced. The anti lock brake sensor wasreplaced twice.

Transmission failed.

While driving consumer automatic transmission gears do not engage properly, it also stalls on an intermittent basis. Dealer has been notified of this problem. Please provide further details.

While driving along the pennsylvania turnpike i had my 1997 gmc jimmy in cruise control. I taped to brake to turn off the cruise control.after resuming the cruise control the vehicle began picking up speed much to fast.i again tapped the brake and shut off the cruise control. I then heard what seemed like a flat tire, i began pulling off of the road.as i looked in the passenger side mirror i could see flames coming from the passenger side rear of the vehicle.after stopping the vehicle i said to my mother the passenger "the vehicle is on fire get out"after she opened the door the flames tornadoed and came inside the vehicle and started everything on fire.i then pulled my mother over the console and dragged her away to safety, the vehicle in less than 20 seconds was engulfed in flames.

The transmission intermittently slips into, but not fully, 4wd when the vehicle is put in reverse. There is a very noticable noise that sounds like the transmission is not fully engaged. The only way to eliminate the noise is to shift the vehicle into 4wd and then back into 2wd. The vehicle has been brought back to the dealer on at least 4 occasions with this complaint. They have not been able to duplicate the problem and therefore have not done any research. On december 19th, 2000 the symptom reappeared after backing my car out of the driveway and i immediately brought it to the dealer. The service manager then test drove the vehicle and noted that the problem i described previously does exist and scheduled me to bring in the truck on thursday, december 28, 2000. When i brought the vehicle in the manager who had test drove the vehicle just one week ago did not seem to recall the condition and said they would check it out. I have a problem with the way the whole thing is being handled. I can't believe that my vehicle is the only one that has this problem in the entire country. I would think that gmc should have some information regarding this in their database. At this point i am not convinced that the proper diagnostic methods are being taken to locate the problem and remedy it. I don'tknow where else to turn and i am looking to you for any guidance that you can provide.

Transmission would shift hard and slow, and was hard to pull.dealership aware of problem. There was a lot of play and slippage intransmission.the transmission was defective accordig to the consumer, but the manufacturer did not admit it.

Ea94-038, under any braking and upon depressingbrake pedal abs system kicked in, causing extended stopping distance and poor braking ability. Consumer has contacteddealer. Dealer has yet to replace parts.also, transmission has been replaced three times.please provide any further details.

Vehicle described in this complaint appears to have a flaw in the design of transmission.in addition to what is included in this report, i also had a problem at 28,000 miles where they "repaired" the transmission while it was under warranty.in both cases the vehicle would not go in reverse, the 4x4 would not work, and certain gears failed.i would also like to note that this appears to be a wide spread problem.i would support this notion by the countless tranmission complaints (for the exact same year and make or other vehicles that most likely use the same transmission ie the blazer) noted on the tod complaint web site for general motors, which is where i found a link to this site.

Please make gm take care of transmission problem.i am not alone in my complaint.code 1870.when will this end when my 5 year old and i are stranded on the highway for hours?i want a recall on this problem.i will not give in on this.gm must pay for these repairs.the consumer should not be responsible.

Transmission slipping again...shift with gas pedal...let off on gas & let rpms drop to allow trans to shift.dealership told me that they no longer service transmissions, too much hassle - will sell me a new one for $2500 plus labor @ another $900 to $1200...limited to only 6 months of coverage!i know of at least 10 other blazaer and jimmy owners at fort bliss that have had same tramsmission problems.an investigation should be opened to recall this transmission.i can be reached anytime at 915-593-5144 to further clarify my concerns...cpt burgess.

Carpet--hole. Automatic transmission--leak at pump, replaced.

Transmission failed on interstate and the emergency flashers failed, transmission has been replaced on two occasions, the electrical system experiences continual malfunctions (emergency flashers, brake lights, warning buzzer).*mjs

Ignition switch has failed and been replaced twice in past 4 years (10/2000 & 8/2003).when it fails, the transmission fails to shift properly and the vehicle loses power and/or stalls. This creates a very dangerous situation, especially if you are in heavy traffic with your entire family.i have been told by gm technicians that this is a common problem due to poor design, engineering and mfg quality.

4-wheel drive motor failed, and shorted out the 4-wheel drive relay causing entire system to not operate at all.

Three out of the four axle seals have been replaced due to failure. *mjs

The mileage reported for each incident is approximate, the failed components could have existed at time of vehicle purchase, the vehicle had 33310 miles.that's well under the manufacturer's warranty coverage, however the problems weren't discovered until the vehicle passed the warranty mileage.the opinion of the mechanic who repaired the items stated the rear axle seal usually lasts for the life of a vehicle however, he said gmc jimmy's are known to have this problem.the rear axle seal broke which caused axle oil to leak on the rear brakes which cause the vehicle to have increased stopping distance or appear as though it was not going to stop, depending on the traveling speed when trying to stop the vehicle tended to pull to one side before the problem was identified.the problem with the transmission dip stick was identified when i took the vehicle into get the oil changed at express oil change in marietta ga.when the mechanic put in the vin # a service bulletin appeared indicating the problem with the transmission dip stick.the mechanic inspected my transmission dip stick and it was rusted just as the service bulletin indicated could happen. I called a gmc dealer about the service bulletin and was informed that i could replace the part at my expense approximately $375 - $ 500 parts & labor.then i was told i could call the gmc customer satisfaction line for further assistance.the individual at the gmc customer service line also stated that since i had purchased the vehicle used, and i had an extended warranty, other than the gmc extended warranty plan that gmc would not repair the faulty dip stick.however, the individual indicated that if i didn't have an extended warranty gmc would inspect and possibly repair the faulty part free.my complaint the part has been identified as faulty, why should i have to pay for repairs?when the tsb was released the vehicle was within the mileage.

Transfer will not engage/disengage all of the time. Two gm dealerships have looked at the vehicle and neither can find the cause, suggested that i start replacing parts and hope i get the right one.the first incident occured on snow slickened roads, the transfer case would not engage four wheel drive rendering the vehicle rwd only . Second incident occured while driving down a steep mountain road in low range when i got to hard paved road the transfer case would not disengage.

Nhtsa recall#03v117 regarding possible seatbelt failure and we notified our local gmc dealer but they have not responded.we are concerned of a possible catastrophe in the event of an accident.

Front end components were worn causing front end vibration, these include the upper and lower ball joints, idler arm and pitman arm, this may have caused the tires to fail prematurely.nlm

When pressing on the gas pedal it does not go, and when it does it flies. Consumer almost hit a lady when incident occurred, dealer is aware of the problem, dealer can remedy the problem.

I was driving on ga400 hwy in atlanta, georgia when my car suddenly got faster and faster as if i were pushing the gas pedal to the floor. The faster the speed, my brakes would not stop me. When i mashed the brakes, they would not go down because the engine was wide open at this point. I was able to get into the right lane and keep it under control until i could get off at an exit. I obviously could not pull over on the hwy because it would not stop. I was putting all of my weight on the brakes to keep from flipping as i made the slight turn to the right to exit. Other cars got out of my way as i swerved through traffic. I finally pulled into a pizza hut restaurantand rammed into a parking speed hump as i was pushing in the emergency brake, and standing on the regular brake. The speed hump stopped me. The car was taken to newton chevrolet in chattanooga for repair. A piece of the throttle body actually broke off and went into the manifold. The piece worked its way down into the head and messed up the valves. I called gm customer assistance after i got the repair bill for $1900.00. I was told that gm would not take responsibility for the throttle bottle breaking apart, that there were no bodily or property damages. The week of the incident was spring break for the atlanta school system so the traffic was lighter than usual. If not for this, i am sure i would have caused a major car pile up because of the bumper to bumper traffic in atlanta. I guess at least that would have stopped the car. I told the rep. From gm that i was not satisfied with his answer and wanted to speak to someone higher in authority. He told me that he was the end of the line and that the decision was made and would not be reversed. I was told to have a nice day... I have seen several other complaints on the internet with jimmy throttle problems, but none as severe as mine.

Owner was driving on the parkway at highway speed and the cruise control engaged on its own.the cruise control got stuck, and the vehicle continued to operate. Owner put the vehicle in o neutral, andthe key was stuck into the ignition. Owner had the vehicle towed back to the dealer.

Accellerator sticks and only a gmc dealer had the right stuff to fix, they say it goes on every 30,000 miles and it should not happen, once you fix it you should not have to pay again to fix it.

Windshield wipers are now dependably non-functional, especially when they're needed the most (like when it's raining).they are inoperable about 90% of the time, nothing seems able to coax the wiper system back into operation under these conditions, and the vehicle's operator is simple left soaking wet and wholly irritated for his efforts.if the vehicle is in operation when these failures occur, the driver must negotiate traffic like some jedi knight using "the force" before he can even get safely pulled over.and on an interstate highway, that's no small trick!this is a dangerous problem, and general motors' seemingly cavalier attitude about addressing it is unacceptable!they have already acknowledged this exact problem with previous model year vehicles and corrected the problem, and there are numerous complaints against the 1997 models; why won't they issue the same badly-needed recall on these vehicles?are they waiting for the inevitable traffic fatalities and subsequent class-action lawsuit...?what will get these people to own up to faulty safety equipment on their vehicles and correct it...?if gm thinks examples of this sort of customer service and vehicle reliability is going to make people flock to their dealerships to buy their products, they're in for a very rude awakening...!big mystery why they're losing money...!

I own a 1997 gmc jimmy.the windshield wipers have always only worked when they wanted to.now, they do not work at all.i have been doing some internet research and found that this is happening to alot of the same models.i see there is a recall for 1996 models.why not the 1997 models?the exact same thing is happening to my 1997.i never knew or was notified of this.i want this repair fixed at no cost to me.what can i do?

Accident on abs failure about $2800.$850 out of my pocket for abs repair.

While usingwindshield wipers and when turning them off, windshieldwipers would continue towork aftertheywere turned off. When turned back onwindshield wipers would not work. Please provide further information.

Windshield wipers function intermittently at best; have been this way for almost two years now, but have been getting steadily less reliable.wipers failed recently on i-35s in waco, tx during rain shower; anyone who's driven this stretch of road doesn't have to be told how dangerous a situation that was.windshield washers are only partially effective (passenger side nozzle is almost totally inoperative); this has been the case for approximately 8 years now.have tried blowing out line/nozzle without successful remedy; obviously problem lies with system design and/or fluid pump.this problem is an obvious safety hazard, and the "bean counters" at gm need to start realizing that a recall is less costly than a class-action lawsuit.i understand (from perusing this site) that there are numerous complaints against the windshield wiper system.there have already been recalls issued which apply to previous model-year vehicles for this same problem; obviously the recall needs to be extended to include the 1997 models as well.please pressure gm to do so before someone loses their life because their windshield wipers fail at a critical moment.
