Air bag: driving approximately 45mphand vehicle hit head on and the air bag did not deploy.

Driver's side air-bag did not deploy when consumer was involved in a collision at the speed of 35 mph.collision involved the front end of consumer's vehicle striking the passenger side of another car through no fault of the consumer. Other driver ran a red light.damage was considerable to consumer's vehicle, and consumer can see no reason why the driver's side air bag should not have deployed in the incident.after review of the nhtsa's complaint data base, consumer notes 10 other complaints of this same failure.consumer is extremely glad that she was wearing a seat belt.had she not been wearing a seat belt, the collision was such that she most likely would have been thrown through the windshield since the air bag did not deploy.

Rear ended by truck which propelled vehicle into back of camper.thus a rear end collision, immediately followed by a front end collision.both front seat backs broke causing the driver and passenger to be violently slammed into the back seat area.the driver (only)air bag did not deploy.the abs system failed upon application of the brakes, just prior to being rear ended by the tractor trailer truck which weighed 77,000 pounds and was going approximately 75mph.the truck driver admitted to the police that he never sloed down or applied his brakes.

The wiring on the air bag module had caused problems with the 4wd. Cannot shift from 2wd high to 4wd low or vice versa. Vehicle not functioning properly. Accelerator needs to be pressed very hard to get to 35mph. Had informed dealership of problem. Had informed the mechanic of the 4wd problem, and that the recall remedy had failed. Mechanic claimed problem like that when vehicle first brought in for recall. Mechanic indicated repairs on high mileage vehicle were not done. Recall on wipers and ball joints were not done. Recall repair on air bag module was done but caused problems with 4wd. Recalls 99i006000 and 99v193000.

Have had many smaller problems, took in for alternator they replace battery cost to me $70 month or so later need new alternator . And had gauges checked gas gauge not reading true, next week or so window wipers start acting up and stopping mid- window and wiper fluid wont spray.

I would like to suggest that the entire 1996 gmc- jimmyseries made need to be recalled because the owner has to many repairs to be done on the vehicle. The services engine light comes very often to indicate repairs on the truck and their are to be problems with this 1996 jimmy. Isuggest a total recall of this vehicle and this vehicle is unsafe to be on the road. It has a very bad braking system abs.

Horn operates at half volume on damp mornings.

The abs system has malfunctioned many times.at first i did not pay attention to it, because i thought it was just light brake pressure.then it started to loose pressure and keep going forward when stopping. I took it to the dealer and paid for a new master cylinder.then it started malfunctioning again.i contacted the bbb and was told it wasn't covered under warranty and i had too much milage.went back to dealer and they reprogrammed the computer unit, no charge.the ignition started locking and they repaired that for a fee.it too has gone back to locking when trying to start.safety is a concern, still.

Spark plug failed.

(1)no events leading to failure. (2) dome light quit working when doors are open. Power mirrors quit working. Power seats quit working. I checked the fuse (a 20 amp) and it was burned out. When i replace the fuse it immediately blows the fuse, i've tried multiple 20 amp fuses and all have instantly blown when i try to replace it. I'm not sure if this is a related problem but the rear hatch will also not open by pressing either the button on the dash or the button on the tailgate. (3) haven't had the money to repair the laundry list of problems with this vehicle.

Vehicle was driven and parked for 5 minutes, saw smoke coming from dash compartment and under the seat, electrical short, fire report indicated an electrical short in fuse box.

Complaint received via e-mail. I am writing in regard to my 1996 gmc jimmy. It caught on fire a few days ago, and was totaled. The fire department had to come to put the blaze out. The fire investigator said there was a short in the fuse panel. They claimed it was a factory defect. I am quite aware that the vehicle was 10 years old. However, i do not believe after 10 years it was alright for them to catch fire due to defect. I have been christmas shopping and lost everything that was in the vehicle. I was very upset.. Fire investigator indicated it was a factory defect that took 10 years to surface. Vehicle was totaled, and remained on consumer's property.

The wiring haress under the dash to the power seat had burned together therefor shorting out the battery and the alternator which caused intermittent stalling.nlm

Speedometer sticks when driving with lights on for 15 minutes or more.dash gets very hot unless dash lights are turned to lowest setting.when dash lights are turned to the lowest setting, the speedometer begins to work normally.

Wiring harness that leads to the lumbar support in the front passenger seat caught on fire.

No summary listed for above vehicle.

While idling vehicle caught on fire due to an electrical short under the dash.

My jimmy caught on fire.the fire department stated that it was a defect in the fuse box system.it was a total loss.i am saddened to think that this happened. Just because the vehicle was 10 years old, doesn't mean that it should catch on fire. I had been christmas shopping and lost it all.

While driving, fire started in engine area - total loss.*la

There was a recall of 96 gmc jimmy's for independent front control arm upper: ball joints. We were advised that ours was not included in the recall. We experienced this problem at 53918 miles on jan. 8 2002. The lower ball joints were replaced along with 2 front tires that were worn andvery dangerousbecause of the ball joint problem.also replaced were: the belt tensioner, oil cooler lines, water and belt - at 54,000 miles. We received a 168.98 reimbursement from pontiac gmc as a "goodwill adjustment"(half of the ball joint replacement charge). They never acknowledge that this vehicle should have been included in the recall. Please include this complaint on this vehicle for problems which should have been included in a recall. Documentation of repairs available if needed. Thank you.*nlm*dimsii ivoq entry posted after 12-12-02 cut-over to artemis**761991

Consumer complains of erratice operation of the temperature gauge.

Faulty heater core that is plugged by dexacool antifreeze

I was driving down i-65 going to work, 70 mph.i looked in my rear view mirror and notice a large amount of smoke coming from my 1995, gmc jimmy, 104000 miles.i looked at my gauges and saw that i had no oil pressure and the check engine light was on.fortunately i was right at an exit.i got off the interstate and stop at a gas station.all of these events happen in less than 5 minutes.when i go out i noticed engine oil on the outside of my vehicle, driver's side.i open the hood and checked the oil.no oil on the dip stick.look under the vehicle and notice a large puddle of oil on the parking lot. I call a wrecker and had my truck towed to my mechanic's shop $85.mechanic told me that one of the oil lines running to the filter and cooler had failed where the fitting is crimped to the line and that my engine was almost depleted of oil.my mechanic replaced the line and fill the vehicle back up with oil. He said it took over five minutes for the valves to quit rattling.the repair cost $212.we debated on whetherto change the other set of lines.we decided to wait a few weeks to see if any damage to the vehicle shows up.i am out almost $300 to date, with another $250 repair waiting or a engine trashed from the first event.my after the fact web queries indicate that this is a common failure mode occurring in almost all jimmies and blazers.why hasn't there been a recall on this problem?coated the highway and a parkinglot with engine oil.had i not seen the smoke i was headed for a catastrophic failure at 70 mph.i consider myself extremely lucky to have survived this incident.i' wasvery upset knowing that there manyvehicles on the road every day that will have this problem sometime in the vehicle's life cycle.

Coolant problems with 96 gmc jimmy. Sludge in system. Plugged heater core. Coolant evaporation.

Consumer states that the coolant looks like mud, cooling system was flushed, coolant leaking into right front floor, radiator and thermostat replaced, engine light illuminated, engine is noisy, tension belt and tensioner belt replaced, vehicle was overheating.

My 1996 gmc jimmy began blowing cold air last winter. We had the radiator flushed and refilled with dexcool. The company told us the dexcool had turned to a sludge and damaged the thermostat. The thermostat was replaced as well. Six months later we have had to have the radiator flushed again because of overheating in the summer. Again the fluid had turned to sludge and we have to get the thermostat replaced again. It appears from what i have been reading that the entire system will have to be replaced soon because of these dexcool issues.

Vehicle overheats, then stalls at any speed/ any time. Dealer has flushed cooling system, did not remedyproblem. Please add further details.

Gmc/gm filled my jimmy at the factory with dexcool. Dexcool is invasive and destructive to the vechicle i paid over 35 k for gmc/gm has sent service sheets to their dealerships with instructions to be followed exactly to purge the contamination from the cooling system. Gmc/gm has hidden this problem because of the number of vechicles involved. Gmc/gm has used the consumer as their scapegoat. Blammed the consumer for the 100,000 mile plus coolant they have used. Go to the internet explorer type in dexcool in search. Cooling system is the subject.www.scuderiaciriani. Com is the location. Go to antifreeze then scroll to date:sun 2 apr 2000 23:42:41-0500 the applications engineer is very specfic about the affect. Ford had transmissions, firestone had tires. Will it take someone or someone's wife and children to become at a disadvantage due to the cooling system and be injured attacked or killed for this factory issue to be addressed? the first time i reached my wife the problem was a covered up $700.00 repair. There is a damm good posibility that their have been injuries because this problem hasn't been addressed and the people you are supposed to be saving have no clue the problem could have been avoided if they only knew!

The antifreeze gummed up and the cooling system had to be replaced. Gm is not taking responsibility for it. Mr

The gmc antifreeze keeps breaking down forming sludge so bad i had to replace the radiator . 6months later it happened again the dealer says that some one put the wrong antifreeze in the system my mechanic says that he has seen antifreeze mixed it it doesn't look like what keeps happening in my cooling system is any one else reporting this problem? my radiator has been repaired by the dealer once replaced by my mechanic once and system flushed.i with in the month had to replace the water pump the dealer did that repair and power flushed the system.it makes me wonder if this isn't a gmc problem like the time they filled the faulty cadilac engine blocks with stop leak to be able to sell them.gmc claims that this anti freeze is supposed to be god for 100000 miles what gives.

I noticed heater was not heating to full potential.checked coolant and saw that the dextron orangecoolant was a sludge type substance.i went to a shop to have radiator flushed and replenished with proper coolant.i was informed that the coolant inside radiator could not be replaced by the establishment and that it had turned into something that was not good for the engine.the establishment said they had turned away two othercustomers due to the same reason.dextron orange could only be replaced by the dealership and that at 40000 miles left before replacement it should not look that way.i have talked to other gmc jimmy and chevy blazer owners and they have had the same complaint.this seems to be a repeating complaint among these owners in my region.i request you investigate the dextron orange coolant that needs to be changed every 5 years or 100000 miles.

The dealership had done all the service work since i owned the vehicle,at 47,000 miles the anti-freeze had the consistency of syrup and was clogging up.after much complaining the dealer pulled the radiator had it flushed and refilled.approx. 30,000 miles later the same thing.they flushed and filled again.it's doing the same thing again in less then a year.they refuse to correct the problem.they informed me i had to pay for it myself.it was never corrected to begin with.

When towing my 3000lb travel trailer the engine will make pre-ignition noises and the check engine light comes on.light will stay on for days afterward, then go off.coolant was changed when i purchased it used because it was black.within 25,000 miles it's black again.

We own a 1996 gmc jimmy 4x4.the connecting rod in the engine broke causing extreme damage to the engine making it inoperabletthis vehicle has always been serviced on time or before needed which is every 3000 to 3500 mile.this vehicle was purchased as a gm buy back or as a lemon vehicle in 1998 with almost 15000 miles on it when we purchased it.the salesman recommended that i purchase an extended warranty which i did for an additional 72 months or 75000 miles for $905.00.i was told, along with my wife, that the vehicle would be covered till 90000 miles or until 2004. When the problems started to arise that were going to be costly we were told that it was out of warranty as the extended warranty went back to the first in service date-1996.we have had constant problems that seem to nickel dime us however we have had it in for leaky oil lines, leaky transmisson, new intake manifold gasket, heater problems, air conditioner problems which have been very costly.this engine, the 4.3 v-6 which according to many mechanics under nomal care and driving, should last 150000 miles.this vehicle now has 87000 miles.we,my wife and i don't feel that we should have to also pay this repair of nearly $1880.00.we are in our 50s and are very safe, cautious drivers.my wife is the the driver of this vehicle and certainly does not over work this suv.it was a cold shoulder i recieved when i asked for assistance with this cost.it seems that gm would take care of there long time loyal customers but this is not the case here however.

Defective abs.

I was charged with the accident but was not issued a summons.i believe the accident was due to the brakes.

(1)no events leading to failure. (2)on numerous ocassions while braking the brakes made a buzzing sound and the pedal went to the floor, losing braking power. This problem has almost caused a few major accidents. I've researched and discovered there is a recall on my vehicle for this problem but gmc dealerships says there is not. (3) not fixed, dealership says there is nothing wrong.

On 5/27/98, i was in a vehicle accident in which i rear ended another vehicle, which caused damage to both vehicles.the vehicle i hit was a total loss.at the time of the accident i was traveling approximately 40 mph and when i put on the brakes my vehicle slid three car lengths (leaving skid marks on the pavement) and stopped when i hit the car in front of me.the sliding was intense and the smoke so thick that i thought my vehicle engine was on fire.i felt at the time that the abs system had malfunctioned, and i mentioned this to the police officer at the scene.when i took the vehicle to the local gmc dealer for collision repairs,i asked them to check the brake system.they indicated that there were not any problems with the brakes. The reason i am filing this claim is because i am a very careful driver who has never been involved in a motor vehicle accident.up to this point in time i had a perfect driving record.the police record indicates that i told the police officer that i was "unable to stop in time".this accident has tarnished my perfect driving record and as a result of this my insurance rates have increased.as a side note, i have had the dealer fix the 4 wheel drive switch (under warranty) on two occasions because the vehicle would not switch from 2 wheel drive to 4 wheel drive.

When pushing the brake pedal, in order to stop. It seems to be very soft. Also experiencing a delay when brakes are applied. Brake light came on once. Problem started after rear end was replaced.

Anti-lock brake unit went out.dealer is quoting $1400 to fix.there are several anti-lock brake defects under investigation.this sounds like a recall item.there is only 56,000 miles on my vehicle and i don't feel that something like this should be going out that early.

Driving under normal conditions a brake failure due to abs malfunction, called the gmc number and they said that while they have the problem on record ,it cant be fixed unless i pay out of poket expenses due to there policy limits complaints on this problem tobe repaired by the dealer up to 2002.

Driving north on hy 101 north of bay city , weather clear , road dry at 2:30 pm , new tires. P/u truck stoppeddead in front of me to avoid an accident. No damage to him but his trailer hitch and steel bumper damaged my front end. Contacted local gmc dealer and he said the gmc recall on the absdid not pertain to my vehical. Vehicle experienced sudden acceleration while driver's foot was on the brakes.driver had to press the brake pedal extremely hard in order to stop vehicle.there was no crash and no one was injured.

Consumer is not happy with manufactures recall regarding abs problem has been known and present since 1994 and no solution as of february 14,2000 (99v-193). Yh

Front wheel speed sensors have now failed twice within a one year period.both failures occurred during winter.when the vehicle was parked the previous evening the abs system was apparently functioning, on both ocassions, when the vehicle was started the following morning the abs dash light was on and the abs was inoperable.if this problem is not limited to my vehicle it seems to warrant some re-engineering by gmc.given our road conditions, un-announced failures of the anti-lock braking system could pose a serious danger to motorists who might just end up relying on the system to help avoid an accident.additionally, i am told that as this is technically an electrical failure my warranty does not cover the cost of repair.the manufacturer should be responsible for repairing safety related items on the vehicle that seem to fail repeadtely over a resanably short period of time.

Upon applying brakes, vehicle slowed down, then suddenly accelerated, causing accident.(qcaw)

Windshield wipers work sometimes but more then often do not work. I called gmc as there was a recall but they tell me my vin number was not part of the recall. The recall was a month before i bought the truck. Why do i have the same problem but i'm not part of the recall? on the brakes- it was recalled for the antilock on a volunteer basis. I took it in for the computer adjustment as per the recall fix, they said it was done and a week later, on the same road it first happened to me, a light changed, i hit the brakes (not hard) and antilock kicked in and the pedal went to the floor and i almost crashed as my heart went into my stomach. Long before the recall, i had my truck into gmc many times for brake problems and even wrote letters that describe the recall long before i know there was one! gm says my truck brakes are fixed but they're not. The wipers they won't cover. Other then these problems and that the engine idles rough and is rough at low speeds, i really like my jimmy!!

I am having a problem with my anti-lock brake system. I have a 1996 gmc jimmy and any time that i apply brakes and there is a difference in road conditions (pavement to gravel) while applying brakes there is always an extended stopping distance and no control. We have pine needles that gather on the side of our small road, making small mounds. If i apply my brakes while going across these the car will not stop. It makes a "pong" sound a couple of times, then it will finally stop. Luckily there has been no oncoming traffic. This has been happening every since i have had the vehicle. I have contacted a chevrolet dealer in the past and they informed me there was no recalls on vehicle.

Anti-lock repeatedly engages and pulsates brakes at low speed stops.has caused one collision and at least 15 other close calls.usually occurs when slowing for a traffic signal, etc. At slow enough speeds that the anti-lock should not engage.after this occurs, the abs warning light comes on.when the warning light is on, the brakes work fine.when the warning light goes back off, it is then likely to reoccur at any time.warning light has stayed on since last occurance and i feel safer as long as the warning light stays on.i'm already paying for this safety defect through higher insurance rates and shouldn't have to pay to replace an obviously faulty system.i just received my 2nd abs recall for this vehicle but it appears this problem addresses a different defect in the same abs system.

Soft brake pedal on 1996 jimmy vin[xxx]. Has been an on going problem since 1999 when we inherited the vehicle. There was a recall on the anti-lock brake system . I've had that done .changed front rotors and pads also led brakes changed out fluid etc. Pedal still soft. Can't even get my toe under pedal when pushed to the floor. The city i work for has 1997 blazer that is the same way. I'm a police officer. Most vehicles that i drive including cruisers have better take up then these 2 vehicles. My jimmy is paid for but if i can't find a resolution or new idea on what to do i'm going to sell it. The dealerships and engineers i've talked to said that those particular years had a lot of brake pedal travel before take up. Thanks for your time. I'm out of ideas any suggestions would be great. *lainformation redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

On 12-21-99 as i was driving on the southern tier expressway in western ny, the right upper ball joint broke, causing me to lose control of my 1996 gmc jimmy.thankfully i was slowing down to prepare to exit from the 65 mph speed limit at this time.at the time of the malfunction, i estimated my speed to be 45 mph.i had my vehicle towed to the closest repair garage and on 12-22-99 the head mechanic told me that all of the ball joints (upper and lower) would need to be replaced on my vehicle.the cost of these repairs were $499.60.my vehicle is only 3+ years old with only 38,985 miles on the odometer.i also noticed that there were two other defect investigations on gmc ball joints on the 96 gmc jimmy.i filed this report because i could have been severely injured or killed as a result of these defects in the ball joints.

Had to replace all 4 ball joints nd according to shop that fixed it this is a common problem with jimmys like mine.dealer said there were no recalls on mine but i checked on line myself and other 1996 jimmys had been recalled but they didn't include my vin #.when trying to get information from gmc as to why they said it could be due to where the vehicle was made or that the ball joints used could be from a different manufacture.they refused to give out that info. Saying it was confidential. I tried going throught the bbb and when gmc got the complaint a lady called and said bbb would not help me and that there isn't a court in the country that could get the info. On where vehicle was produced or what ball joints were used on mine.since mine is driven by my wife, has never been off road or abused, that the ball joints wore out before the tires, and that gmc has recalled similar vehicles leads me to believe mine were defective also!i have all the correspondance via email with gmc if you would like a copy.thanks and please advise how to proceed.ben shown feelling helpless against gmc.

This is listed specifically on nhtsa as a safety recall for my vehicle (4wd 1996 gmc jimmy).i was told on a recent safety inspection that these ball joints have failed and that a crash can result.however, the dealer says it is not applicable to my vehicle and that gmc will not pay for it.the nhtsa notice makes no mention of manufacturer's dates or particular vins, so it seems odd that there is a known problem with this class of vehicle and yet somehow it is not applicable to mine.

My 1996 gmc jimmy has had ball joint problems (upper and lower replaced at 40k, 79k), abs problems (recalled to change s/w, failed at 80k) and windshield wiper problems (intermittent failures at 80k). All of these problems have had recalls, but when i contact gmc they tell me my vehicle is not included (vin [xxx]). What i don't understand is if my car is failing with the exact problems mentioned in the recall notice, then the problems seem to be more widespread then gm is willing to admit. *nlminformation redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

I was on the highway going at the speed of 45mph when the ball joint on the front passanger tire broke, causing me to go through 3 lanes without warning and almost flipping my car over. This is not the first time where i have almost lost my life due to manufacturer defects. Last year while driving on the highway, the wipers went out on me in the middle of a thunderstorm. The wipers died out on me a total of 6 times in the last 2 years with over 10 visits to dealers for repairs. The ball joint cracking caused the cv boot to be damaged, the stabilizer lines were damaged, the line cover was damaged, and the dealer found that all 4 ball joints were severly bad - not because fo driving but manufacturer defect. The car is only four years old how could so many things be bad on a car that isn't even 4 years old. The warrantly co. And manufacturer refuse to be responsible for damage caused to other components because of the broken ball joint. The engine cooler line is also bad, including the clamp which has been replaced already by outside source. The wipers have shut down more than once and it took over 10 visits to get them fixed - including paying out of pocket expense of $433.00. The car has almost cost me my life more than 6 times on the highway at high speeds. Sorry to say - this car has been nothing but a death trap from day one.

This is the third set of balljoints i will be putting in. Its crazy !

The front driver-side wheel assembly, as vehicle was moving, eventually sheared off . The ball joint broke away from the wheel. The vehicle has been regularly serviced, oil change/lube etc. All receipts retained. Probably would've been a very serious accident if i was on the highway. I feel this is a major defect in the vehicle, and people should be notified. The vehicle has never been off road and there are no "hard" miles on it.

I own a 1996 gmc jimmy suvmy windshield wipers would intermittently just stop working. They progressively got worse, but would just as mysteriously start working again. I could not see anything, but managed to exit the highway without a crash. Needless to say this is a serious safety hazard!
