Read complaints for GMC ENVOY XL (2002)

Transmission will not come out of low gear cold. Has been in 4 times for what they call "computer software upgrades" now the transmission slips into low gear while slowing, they tell me this is normal. The car has been in the shop 5 times for the above issue since we took possesion brand new.

I was involved in a accident on 2/21/08 at 2:00pm the accident involved three cars. I was driving a 2002 gmc envoy 1st car crossed three lanes out of control i hit the car and another car hit me from behind the approximate speed was 45 miles an hour.my airbags did not deploy nor did my seatbelts lock causing me great bodily injury by hitting the steeringwheel and forcing my legs up under the dashboard.

In an accident on i75 when forced off road into trees ahd large tree dent in front fender. Airbag in front never deployed and driver side airbag had holes blown in it that damaged my left hand and armrest impact caused kidney to rupture and bleed.

Recalls that are seriously affecting the car's safety that cannot be repaired because the service call has closed, but was bought that way without knowing. The wiper motor works when it wants on the driver side, preventing clear safe vision during rain, the 4 wheel drive is stuck in 4 wd, the front suspension possibly cracked, the headlight doesn't face straight on the road, the air bag on the passenger side has defect that if deployed can cause bodily injury to the passenger, license plate only works when its slammed shut, and have issue with the electrical under the dash that apparently fails to comply with the requirements of federal motor vehicle safety standards no. 101, "control location, identification, and illumination" and no. 208, "occupant crash protection..but yet gm wont repair it !!!all of these are prior recalls, but because i wasn't the original owner and didn't take the car in when they were first announced, gm refuses to make my envoy safe from causing me or my kids harm. Because the first owner didn't do it, or because its too late.if a year make and model of a car has a recall, why does it matter when the issue surfaces, its obviously a cause for concern, why not repair it?

Air bag deployed for no reason.i was sitting in the vehicle in the garage and just started it and the driver side air bag deployed.the air bag light had come on once or twice while driving but went off.

For i have a 2002 gmc envoy that is having brake problems and the answer that i was getting from the dealer was that my brakes were low, well i changed them and the problem is still there, for at times when holding down the brake the pedal will stop and then drop about an eight of an inch ( as if there is air in the lines) and i don't know if electrical problems are thought of as dangerous, but i have them too.

Exterior lights, interior lights flickering,,,cluster gauges changing state on their own,,,

As i was driving down interstate at 70-75mph , the headlights, dash lights, all the lighting just shut off! i had no idea what to do. I was on one of the most dangerous interstates, known for fatal accidents... And i'm driving in the dark without lights! i quickly moved to side of road and shut it off in case of faulty wiring/fire hazard.after approx.a five minute phone call, i started car, lights worked. Started driving again, approx. 10 minutes down road, lights shut off again.i hope this problem is resolved soon! this is dangerous and can kill people!

2002 gmc envoy - the cluster package on my truck has completely gone out, i can not see anything on my dash board and when i took it back to the dealer for repairs due to the recall # 03v096000, advised its for calibration only and my vehicle needs a cluster replacement. This is a hazard the cluster package will not restart this is a daily operation.

I don't knowwhy there is no in investigation when there's alot of the same vehicle going through the same problems my 2002 has 118 000 and it had alllllllllllllllllll of the problems that everybody complained and even more than what's already there written all u waiting for is something really bad to happen then u recall when is to late the transmission was repaired completely and there again the same problem in less than 3 months 4wd has been sent to fix more than 6 time still don't know what's the problem, breaks squeaks all the time, every time it rains got to stop cant see cause of the wipers, the seat belt ripped on the rear side, the clutch stays stuck on while driving, heaters don't work on number 5 it will turn off, if i put the heater to heat all around my vehicle turns off, the front wheels one is more apart from the bumper than the other and when it snows with out the 4wd u don't go nowhere it gets stuck everywhere or slides............. Hope there's help.

When driving the vehicle all dash lights and gauges just stop working. They will come back on but this is a safety concern while driving on the highway. Also my headlights go on and off i have changed out the bulbs thinking that was the issue and no its not. On my way to work this morning at 530am they stopped and have not turned back on causing me to pull over and now missing work to figure out the problem. This has been an ongoing issue since the beginning of june and the problem seems it's getting worse. I can't drive 70 mph on a highway and have my headlights just stop working. I also smell gasoline inside my vehicle frequently.

My headlight driver module fuse caught fire and caused a fire in my fuse box in which i had to use a fire extinguisher to put out. The dealership informed me that the fuse got hot and instead of shorting out and blowing the fuse it caught fire. Had i not been in my driveway my vehicle would have burnt completely to the ground. This imposes a major safety hazard. The vehicle has been sitting at the dealership for 3 weekswhile gmc decides what they will do.

I bought the car used feb. 2011 about march 2011 sometimes when it is started (no specific start time) the check engine light will be on (not always) and the car will die while driving approximately 25 to 35 miles per hour.this is not a all the time problem, and i cannot find a reason why some days it does this and some days it doesn't.also sometimes the cruise control works and sometimes it doesn't..also sometimes the wipers stop in mid swipe.

I was driving on mechanicsville road at 45 mph as is the speed limit there.the car lurched to a stopped.the emergency message read, "major brake failure, go immediately to the dealer.the service manager said he had one such incident with a gentleman earlier, and it was a break in the gasket leaking oil onto the brake sensor soaking it with oil that lead to this failure.it turns out that is what exactly lead to my brake failure.the gasket broke and leaked oil onto the break sensor causing the breaks to fail.

General quality failure. Just a few of the problems 1. All of the recall notices 2. Front end bushings 3. Rear end bushing 4. Air conditioning replacement 5. 4 wheel drive engagement. 6. Door steps fall off 7.love the vehicle except that the dealer shop forman gets to drive it more than i do. Had a 1999 blazer prior to this and it had quality issues also. Definitely go honda or toyota next time.

Ive notice my front headlights have been getting worse for me to see at night. I don't see whats in front of me while driving at the last minute, anytime at night while driving i don't see turns, objects and other things till the last second. I haven't had a accident due to poor visibility.i feel gmc is liable for this problem,i feel the gmc envoy was made a lemon and the whole suv should of been recalled because us envoy owners are stil having the same problem certain envoy only had as gmc claims only envoy with this vin number or the year it was manufacturer in or state .all 2002 gmc envoys xl 4x4 need to be reinvestigate again under the lemon law act

My rear high mount stop lamp attached to the lift gate window has became detached yesterday on it's own. It seems that it's fastening holding it down had loosened and broke. It is now hanging from it's wiring and needs to be replaced, rewired, and mounted. I believe this is similar to nhtsa campaign number: 04v527000, where vibration and heat from normal driving use played a factor in uncovering another defect in theexterior lighting:brake lights.

On our 2002 gmc envoy, when driving in heavy fog or any type of falling snow the headlights shoot a beam of light straight up.it looks like what the searchlights look like in old war movies.the reflection from the light on he fog or snow really messes up the drivers vision because it effectivly blocks the sight of anything past the hood. We talked to the dealer about it and the service manager said that we weren't the first to compalin but until gm did a recall, he couldn't do anything about it.

The contact owns a 2002 gmc envoy slt. The contact stated while driving at 60 mph, the low beam lights failed. The failure would occur intermittently and did not affect the high beam lights. The dealer advised bringing the vehicle in for diagnostic testing. The manufacturer stated there was not any recalls on the vehicle and would not provide any assistance. The failure mileage was 133,000 and current mileage was 135,000.

Headlights, lower beam lamp socket keeps burning out. Has done this since purchase in 2003. Tail lights did same thing and replaced assembly under warranty. Dangerous to drive at night because you don't know when they are going to burnout. Has happened four to five times.

Check engine light turned on. Taken vehicle to the dealer and found that there was a leak at the filler pipe and fuel tank which allowed fuel and vapors to escape.dealer will repair for $900.00.

Strong fuel smell in my driveway, car leaking gas around the tank area.

I own a 2003 gmc envoy xlt service engine light is on returned the vehicle to the dealer and was told this is a cracked fuel tank. Dealer showed me where the fuel was leaking it was leaking on a weld that attaches the filler hose to the fuel tank. This certainly isn't a wearable part and it doesn't receive much corrosion due to being a florida car. There are many forums on the internet and many vehicle owners that have the same problem. I would think that a fuel leak may lead to extremely hazardous situation for all motor vehicle owners. I understand an investigation has been raised and closed. It is unfair that gm manufactures a fuel tank that could be a risk to its consumers. This case needs to be revisited and reopened.

2002 gmc envoy xl has a problem when i fill with gas it does not shut off but overflows onto the pavement underneath the car.

In late 2007, my wife began smelling a strong odor of gasoline coming from in and around our 2002 gmc envoy xl.the odor is present whether the tank is full or near empty.

The gmc envoy xlt experiences a total loss of power under the following conditions.when the fuel tank isat or below a quarter tank of gas the vehicle's gas pedal becomes inoperable and the forward velocity is lost to the point that if you are in traffic the vehicle will immediately began to slow down resulting in a completely hazardous and unsafe situation where the driver has no choice but to pull off the road or be rear ended.this has occurred on several occasions only under the conditions described above.several gmc envoy xlt owners have expressed the same situation.this has been reported to gmc in 2005 but it appears that the problem is known but they aren't accepting responsibility as a manufacturer.possible indicators may be the fuel pump assembly, fuel pressure regulator, or some other vital componet in the fuel system.i am sure gm knows.

Noticed the smell of gas.took to dealer where purchased.fuel pump was fine, but the tube had corroded.extended warranty purchased will not cover this because the pump did not fail.failure was due to corrosion.the vehicle is only 5 years old!cost estimate is over $600.00 to fix. Have to replace pump also.when repaired, i will ask for the old part.this vehicle has been in shop for repairs more than any one i have ever owned. (front wheel bearings went at about the same time, but were covered under the warranty).

Leaky gas tank on 2002 gmc envoy xl.48,000 miles.found by dealership, recommended new gas tank for approx $500 plus labor.service bulletin exists to look for crack in tank per service department.

While filling my 2002 gmc envoy, i observed gas pouring out of the top of the tank down over the rear axle and near the tailpipe.i noticed this because the gas pump did not shut off at the appropriate level.i called gmc and reported it.they were at first reluctant to give me the agency i could report this too but after speaking to a supervisor they finally told me i could report the possible defect to the nhtsa.

I have a 2002 gmc envoy that is apparently experiencing a fuel vapor leak.i took it ot the dealer (franklin gmc, tn) and he said it was a known problem; however, gmc has not initiated a recall process.he told me i could either wait for a possible recall or pay $900 to have the entire fuel tank replaced.i asked him if he felt any repsonsibility for notifying me of the known problem and not remedying the solution and he said it would have to be approved by gmc.obviously gmc has taken the position that they would rather pay lawsuits instead of correcting the problem.sad!

The contact owns a 2002 gmc envoy xl.the check engine indicator light illuminated and the vehicle smelled of gasoline.the dealer diagnosed the failure as needing a new fuel tank on three separate occasions.the contact has the repair invoices.the current mileage is 150,000, and failure mileage was 16,742.

2002gmc envoy has an ses illumination accompanied by a fuel odor,and/or a few drops of fuel on the ground when refueling the vehicle. This is caused by a fracture of a weld on the fuel tank inlet check valve (icv). The icv islocated above the full fuel level. A fracture in this area may allow fuel vapors to pass through and allow droplets of fuel to accumulate on the side of the fuel tank as it passes over the fracture during refueling.

Fuel tank has leak at joint where filler pipe and tank join allowing fuel and vapors to escape.smelled fuel inside the garage. The dealer service manager said that the weld had failed, that it is a manufacturing defect, and that they had replaced the fuel tank for2 other envoys for the same failure.there was no prior repair on the fuel tank or removal of the fuel tank.

I noticed a puddle of liquid under vehicle . So i checked it out and found to be gas looked under vehicle and seen that the gas tank had stains all over it leading from the filler neck where it attaches to the fuel tank.

Vehicle has a inlet fuel leak, a known issue on thegmcenvoy xl 4x4, but has put a 150,000 mile cap on the recallwhich i find negligent as the issue still exist regardless of mileage, just seems like a way to worm out of responsibility.

The vehicle's rear passenger side lock broke without warning. As a result, the door would not close and owner had to tape it shut. The cause has yet to be determined. *la

In a matter of one weeks time we had 2 door locks fail on the passenger doors of our gmc envoy xl.the latch that closes the door failed and one of the doors opened while driving the car.i had the first latch on the passenger rear door replaced on september 20th and the same thing happened with the driver side rear door on september 25, 2005.this time i was not driving just putting my child in his car seat and the door would not close.i am talking with gm about this problem because the dealership told me they have changed quite a few of these.this is a major safety issue and needs to be a recalled item.i only had the car 3 years and a part that can cause such a deadly consequence should not wear out.this needs to be investigated.

Rear passenger side door was defective and was replaced at least 3 times.since the last repair the door lock was defective again. Consumer tookthe vehicle back to the dealer for the same repair. Currently, passenger's rear door was defective as well.

Dt*:the contact stated the rear hatch window opened on its own intermittently.the dealership was unable to determine the problem.also, the rear passenger door would not operate intermittently from the outside.the dealership adjusted the striker and cleaned the door jam, but the problem persisted.

The rear window on the tailgate pops open about every other month. The dashboard display advises this has happened but it can be easily heard when the latch pops. This has been occurring for several years. The date below is the most recent occurrance.

2002 gmc envoy with 31,000 mile experienced transmission failure (no reverse). The dealer said that it was the "sunshell" gear and normally would cost $2300 to repair, but, out of the goodness of their heart they would only charge me a $500 deductible (i assume it is on some type of warranty that they have) plus fluids, so my grand total would only be around $600. On the surface this seemed like a good deal but after a little research it turns out there are many other envoy and trailblazer owners who have had the same problem. It is clear that there is some sort of defect and appears gm has it covered under some type of warranty and is sticking the consumer with their $500 deductible when they should be paying for the entire repair.

In 10 days, had the transmission go out ($3200), exhaust manifold gaskets start leaking ($400), 4wd switch ($250), automatic transmission park lock in steering column ($250) and now i have a 4wd service light on.the dealer has been totally unhelpful.although i am an engineer at a tier 1 u.s. Auto supplier, i will be looking overseas for my next car.

Transmission failure.

My 2002 gmc envoy seemed to be running fine.one day on the way home, i heard a loud bang and my rpm's seemed to go up. It almost made me swerve into oncoming traffic due to the distraction.when i got to where i was going, i found out that i had no reverse, and it shifted extremely hard between 1st and 2nd gear.dealer told me they never heard of it, but it needed a sun gear, approximately $2,000 to fix.i opted for the new tranny for $3,200.

The transmission on my 2002 envoy xlt went out this morning on my way to work. I barely missed having an accident while passing a semi and injuring myself and others. The envoy has 69,000 miles on it and the transmission should have lasted much longer. After exploring some web sites (http://townhall-talk.edmunds.com/direct/view/.ef15323) i found that other owners of envoys and trailblazers also experienced transmission failure. An immediate recall should be issued. Cost for replacing the transmission is $1,500. We were so thrilled with the envoy and brag about it all the time. We were considering buying a new one next year but we won't if we do not get reimbursed for this transmission repair. Signeddaniel and diana trabel812-623-3440very disappointed envoy owners

The transmission would "clunk" upon starting and stopping. One day while driving there was a bang and then the gears would not shift from 1st to 2nd without revving the engine very high and then letting off the gas. The next morning there was no reverse. The dealer said it was the reverse sunshell gear that broke. It was replaced.

Dt*:the contact stated while exiting the expressway at 45 mph the vehicle lost all transmission control.the engine revved and the vehicle coasted to a stop.the vehicle was put into park however, the vehicle still rolled.the vehicle was towed to a dealer for inspection.upon inspection the transfer case and module needed to be replaced.there is a nhtsa recall #01v334000, regarding the transmission and transfer case.the vehicle has the same problem as indicated in the recall however; it is not included in the recall due to the vin.no repairs have been made.

Transmission failure.

I have had three total transmission failures. The first was in dec, 2002 at 14,000 miles. The second was in dec 2003 at 36,000 miles. The third was jan 2005 at 58,000 miles. Each time the dealership repaired the car but can not determine the reason for the failure. The last failure was with my five year old granddaughter in the car and we were pulling into oncoming traffic. Since they have not determined the root cause of the failure i see no reason to think it will not happen again.

The cable connecting the shift lever to the transmission pulled lose and locked the transmission in the pre-failure state. If this happens when someone is shifting into park, they may not realize that the transmission did not go into park and the vehicle could roll causing an accident. The plastic connector on the shift cable is located very close to the exhaust pipe and appears to lose high temp over time. (the ears pulled through).

Computer that activates the four wheel drive is inoperable. It goes into sleep mode and consumer doesn't know that he is in 4-wheel drive. Consumer contacted the dealer, who updated the computer. It seems to be fine.

The contact owns a 2002 gmc envoy xl.the contact stated that he has been experiencing the same failures as noted in recall # 03v096000 (electrical system: wiring: interior/under dash).he has taken the vehicle to the dealer, but the failure still persists.the contact stated that the seat belts continue to lock and the windshield wipers are malfunctioning.the wipers have been replaced numerous times and the failure causes limited visibility in certain weather conditions.the suspension for the arms of the ball joints was replaced and the vehicle continues to shake, shimmer, and make a loud noise.the vehicle was repaired, but the failures are ongoing.when turning, the steering wheel hesitates and causes the vehicle to jerk uncontrollably.when the windows are down, the interior lights dim due to an electrical short.the tires were changed four times, but continued to fail.the contact stated that the brakes have been replaced repeatedly.the dealer stated that the discs were failing due to adverse weather conditions.the current mileage is 68,000 and failure mileage was 38,000. Updated 1/15/09 the catalytic converter, the camshaft, and engine coil was replaced. The check engine light is still on. Updated 01/21/09

Dt: 2002 gmc envoy xl -the consumer is having the same problem as the larger gmc vehicles that were recalledregarding the anti- lock braking system.while driving at high speed the vehicle starting slowing down and locked up.the consumer was able to drive to the dealer.the anti- lock brakes were repaired on the truck at a cost of $1400.the consumer had the repair done about a year ago.there was no recall on the envoy for the abs.

Dt:the contact states the abs brakesare not activating properly.the brakes will not hold.the vehicle was taken to the dealership multiple times.they have been unable to diagnose thecause of the problem.

The trim containing rear stop light located at the top rear of vehicle broke off because the clips holding it to body of vehicle sheared off.

For this auto has been in the shop about twenty times and three times for a water leak that they can't seem to fix, it seems like every month there's a new problem, and i have spent about 19000 in this car and i'm afraid that i will have to spend money that i should not have to.

Dt*: the contact stated while driving various speeds, the front bumper bounced up and down, and fractured the plastic molding.afterwards, a rattling noise came from the bumper.the vehicle was inspected by a dealer who determined that was the way the bumper was designed.the manufacturer was notified.updated 10/25/2006 -

Dt*:the contact stated the rear hatch window opened on its own intermittently.the dealership was unable to determine the problem.also, the rear passenger door would not operate intermittently from the outside.the dealership adjusted the striker and cleaned the door jam, but the problem persisted.

The rear hatchback glass shattered on my 2002 envoy xl for no apparent reason. The car was parked. This is the second time since owning this vehicle that we have had an issue with the hatchback glass.the first incident was in aprox. 2003 when the glass came loose from the hinges and dropped. It was replaced free of charge from the gm warranty.

Noticed the smell of gas.took to dealer where purchased.fuel pump was fine, but the tube had corroded.extended warranty purchased will not cover this because the pump did not fail.failure was due to corrosion.the vehicle is only 5 years old!cost estimate is over $600.00 to fix. Have to replace pump also.when repaired, i will ask for the old part.this vehicle has been in shop for repairs more than any one i have ever owned. (front wheel bearings went at about the same time, but were covered under the warranty).

The rear window of the 2002 envoy xl exploded while sitting in the driveway.

Loss of engine power preventing passing on highway was caused by failure of the gas pedal (#15150990), which had to be replaced (parts and labor: $211).*la

I took my car to jay auto mall in columbus ga. And was told they would not repair the flap on the washer flap that covers the hole that delivers the windsheild wiper fluid to clean the windsheild. I was told that they would have to breakdown the complete delivery system of the wiper fluid to fix the problem. The delivery system works fine for the passenger side. All i need is a repair of the wiper flap on the drivers side.can you help me?
