Fuel pump module corrosion causing leaking fuel and fuel vapors from the top of the fuel tank. This is due to a design defect as the fuel pump module sits lower than the highest point of the fuel tank and moisture and debris accumulate on top of the fuel pump module. The top of the module is not manufactured with appropriate rust-proofing measures and the materials used leave it prone to rusting and failure, compromising the seal and allowing fuel to escape from the tank. This poses a fire hazard, especially if fuel is able to reach heated exhaust pipes, etc. I took my vehicle into a a gmc dealership and was denied repair of the vehicle or reimbursement for repair. There was a special coverage for this vehicle that has since expired, proving that gm is / was aware of the problem. Given the numerous complaints of this exact same issue, this should be escalated to recall status due to the inherent safety issue and fire risk.
