The contact owned a 2004 gmc canyon. While driving 45 mph, the contact's vehicle was rear ended. As a result, the contact's vehicle crashed into the preceding vehicle. The air bags did not deploy and the seat belt pre-tensioner failed to secure the contact, which caused her face to strike the steering wheel. A police report was filed. The contact sustained injuries that required medical attention. The vehicle was destroyed. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and carried out an investigation. The failure mileage was unknown.
I am the original owner of a 2004 gmc canyon pu,purchased on 06-10--04.on 05-10-06, i took the vehicle to my local gmc dealer in southern ca. Because the airbag light on the instrument panel stayed on.the vehicle mileage at this time was 42,220.the problem was taken care of at no charge.on 12-28-07, i took the above listed vehicle (mileage 74,456) into my local gmc dealer in southern az. Because the airbag light on the instrument panel again stayed on.an electrical diagnosis of the system revealed a faulty pre tensioner.the service consultant told me it would cost over $300 to install a new pre-tensioner.he said he also called gmc hq to find out if the charge could be waived and was told no.they told me that if i was involved in a crash, the airbag might not deploy.i did not get it repair at that time.i wrote to gmc hq about the problem saying it was a safety defect and after consulting with the az dealer, they said no to my waiver.i would like your agency to look into this mater to see if other gmc models have had the same problem.please contact me.thankyou
Had an accident where i rear ended a car at about 25 mph and my airbag didnot deploy however the airbag light came on.
Has been a problem for some time and was told to report to this site my passenger air bag light stays on, truck is a extended cab so checked the wiring in the doors and they were broke in passenger door so i repaired them thinking i found the problem and light still stays on and radio will not shut off when drivers side door is opened also dome light does not come on but will when the passenger side door is opened?????? dealership just wants $$$$$ to check the codes and more $$$$ to repair the problem that is occurring from their poor design from what i have read i am not the only one that has this problem. I'm afraid the air bag will not work on passenger side if an accident happens? also checked the wires under seat and they look fine?
I went to work this morning and my 2004 gmc canyon truck was running fine, about 2 hours later i ran an errand, still no issues with the truck.around 2:00pm i went to run another errand and smelt something like burning plastic, i opened my truck to find that my front passenger side door was smoldering.the truck was full of smoke and there is now a hole in the side of my door from where the plastic melted!i have no idea how this could have happened, but this is my only source of transportation and i often take my granddaughters on trips with me.i plan to take it to a gmc dealership and have them look at it so maybe they can tell me what caused this problem.also, the back seats in this truck block a lot of the view out of the rear window causing major blind spots.since i have only had this truck about 2 months i plan to address these issues and sell the darn truck!
Got recall notice in late 2014 early 2015 notice of recall on truck for ignition switch. I have owned the truck since i bought it in 2004. I got a recall notice in the time frame above to bring it in. I took it to then stanly gmc in sherman texas, now parkway gmc. The parts manager said because i was outside the mileage there was nothing they could do. To day i saw an article in our newspaper about the poor recall percentage on your notices. I took mine in as the article said you would like me to do. The service manager at that time made me feel like i was a nuisance. I have had no problem yet and intend to keep the truck for another 10 years or so. If i do ever decide to trade for a new truck i'll keep this event in mind. I'm 72 and would like to know why you put a limit on the time before the recall expires. A problem can bea problem no matter how old the truck or car is as long as the original owner has it. Thank you [xxx]information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).
The gmc passlock lockout feature is a pain in the rear of nearly every car/truck owner having this feature. Today, for the umpteenth time, my vehicle would not start when i tried to start it up after fueling. My truck was stuck at the gas pumps, obstructing other patrons waiting to gas up. I sat waiting for about 5 minutes and tried starting it again, while getting dirty looks from other people waiting to gas up. Of, course it didn't start because i hadn't waited the requisite 10 minutes. Finally, i got out and pushed the truck away from the pumps by myself (i am 72 years old) and then waited 10 minutes and finally re-started my vehicle. I have experienced this aggravation of my vehicle not starting many, many times during the 14 years that i have owned this vehicle.i will never buy another gmc product!gmc should be required to issue a recall and fix this problem once and for all.
I have a 2004 gmc canyon, purchased new in feb. 2004.it is equipped with the gm passkey ii system.this is intended to act as a theft deterrent by shutting down the flow of gas to the fuel injectors if someone attempts to start the vehicle with a key which does not properly register electronically with a starting module in the vehicle.the customers key has an embedded chip which sends an electronic signal to the starting module.if the signal received is misread the vehicle will not start.the problem is that after about 5-7 years the system starts to fail and does not properly read this electronic signal, thereby shutting down the flow of fuel to the fuel injectors.as a result, the consumer, using an original key, cannot start the vehicle without first resorting to a ten minute procedure to insert the key in the ignition, turn it to the accessory position and waiting until the module re-registers the key.instead of acting as a theft deterrent, it acts as a consumer deterrent!an internet search, using the phrase "gm passkey ii problems" will turn up hundreds of disgruntled consumer complaints.this is an inherent design flaw in all gm vehicles produced since approximately 2000.consumers report going to their gm dealerships and being charged $450-700 to replace either the starting module or the ignition switch, only to have the problem re-occur moths later. A private auto mechanic will refuse to work on the problem to by-pass the passkey ii system for fear of lawsuits by insurance companies if the vehicle is subsequently stolen.i spoke with a gm representative today after filing an internet complaint with gm.i was told gm would not do anything unless i first took my vehicle to a gm dealer for a diagnostic check (at my expense) since the vehicles warranty has expired.in light of the nationwide magnitude of this problem, and the impotency of the consumer (other than boycotting gm products in the future), i feel a nationwide recall of all gm vehicle.
2004 gmc canyon, 113,000 miles. About a year ago started having starting problems. Changed fuel pump, out of my pocket, truck out of warranty. $400 later truck still had starting problems. Noticed when it won't start passlock light is on. Have to wait 10 minutes or so then it'll start. Happening more frequent now. Dealer wants $90 to diagnose plus cost of parts & labor. I've noticed quite a few other canyon owners having same problem. How many vehicles will this have to effect before recall is done? this problem has been going on with my truck since 2008. I have just dealt with it since i don't have the money to dump into the dealers hands while they play the process of elimination game.
I just read a jalopnik article on a recall of the g3 hummer and the question why the canyon/colorado was not included.a few years back the blower fan quit working on low settings.i found a tech tip that suggested i replace the fan resistor, which i did.i remember when i replaced it there was brown marks on the resistor and plug at the electrical connectors.while i did not suffer a fire like some others, this is a real problem with these rigs.thought you should know...

The brake light out was a safety concern for tailgaters.so i took to mark christopher gmc dealer, ontario ca for repair because of two same recalls on the vehicle plus transmission oil change.original estimation of cost was 305. The dealer decided to charge me 155 for transmission oil change and labor, $16.75 for a defective/malfunction brake switch and $200 on labor.they told me the recalls was done already on the vehicle and there is no warranty on the second attempt. The final estimation of cost was $377. I don't recall the date that it was serviced. How can gmc assures that the vehicle recalls was done properly? i'm very disappointed with gmc and it recalls. I felt like i got rip off by the dealer. Beside, i don't know if they ever change my transmission oil filter and casket along with the transmission oil change.
Climate control fan only works in position 4. Took vehicle to dealership. They said it was a resistor on circuit board. They swapped it out. Less than six months later same thing. Took it in and didn't have them replace it. They did however disconnect connector to motor, it wasburnt and slightly melted. Why are they not investigating this. I assume that the condensing camber doesn't drain properly, thus impinging on squirrel cage blower, thus higher starter amps required and that is how you overcurrent this connector and resistor.

My 2004 gmc canyon has, for the pastyear, quit starting due to anti theft passlock system installed on truck. I have on two separate occasions thus far been involved in an emergency situation that could have been further prevented but the anti theft passlock stopped me from starting the vehicle. This specifically is a widespread problem that gm is aware of and has made no recall to date on the issue. There are safety and emergency situations being caused by this defect. Please research and assist any way possible.
The contact owns 2004 gmc canyon.the contact stated that the ignition failed to start.the contact mentioned that the ignition had to be turned lightly and released quickly in order to start the vehicle.the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who was unable to diagnose the failure.the manufacturer was notified of the defect.the approximate failure mileage was 129,000.updated 9/11/14updated 1/20/2015
After reading a post from the 116 affected gmc canyon owners i have the exact same problem. Last month june 2019 while driving home from work my acjust quit working (hot weather in sacramento), no matter what speed it was on 1 through 4. I also smelt a burning smell. Today while driving my truck to the realer to get it analyzed i hit a bump and the blower started working again on speed 4. Bob from john l sullivan chevy just called to confirm the diagnosis...the connector that connects to the blower was melted and the resister was burnt.

Rear turn signal lights, brake lamps and head lamps experience permanent loss.sometimes when the vehicle becomes wet the cruise control stops functioning, the power door locks stop working, the power windows stop working, and the power rear view mirrors stop working. Also there is periodic non-functioning of the remote key entry.as of 11/10/2006 the rear tail lights have been replaced twice and one head lamp at owners expense. Currently a third brake light requires replacement. On nov. 10, 2006 i took the truck in for repair an mentioned the recall on this particular problem. The dealership said that gm has not issued a recall and that the owner would have to pay for the repairs. I am aware of the "nhtsa campaign number 06v-139" and gm's april 26, 2006 response to mr. Daniel c. Smith, associate administrator for enforcement, nhtsa. Although the recall references only the brake lamps and possibility of cruise control failure, i believe the problem is further exasperated with the other afore mentioned electrical problems. Consequences present themselves in the form of distractions to the driver when trying to drive and make adjustments to the following electrical componets when they fail to function: door mounted rear view mirrors, lowering of windows in order to pay for highway tolls, rear brake lights and turn signal lights fail, and reduced head lamp failures.
Reduced power light came on the dashboard and i had no power. This has happened 4 times since july 2013. It has happened 2 times in april and now again. It is going back to the garage on tues.getting ridiculous and expensive! when it is put on the scope it keeps coming up with the throttle position sensor fault.
My truck is failing to start at intermittent times. Have checked the starter and alternator but the lights work and the battery checks out fine.after about 15 minutes the truck will start and run normally. I had the fuel pump changed as i was told this was the problem but the problem persisted.i changed the fuel pump again thinking i received a defective fuel pump but i am still having the same starting issues.i have reset the computer in the truck hoping this would help but it has not. This starting issue occurs about every day and usually when i need the truck the most (i.e. To and from work) please help with any suggestions or solutions you may have!
The contact owns a 2004 gmc canyon. The contact stated thatthe vehicle was sitting parked with the engine shut off when it erupted into flames. The fire department was able to extinguish the fire and advised the fire originated from under the glove compartment. The vehicle was not examined for the cause of failure. The vin was not available. The failure and current mileages were unknown.
Engine will not start at variable times, had engine scope it show some kind of electrical problem, but could not pinpoint where. Turn on key and every thing is dead, had battery check it is ok. Purchased new 2004 canyon and have only 13,000 miles on it, a darn bumper. Need help.
Gmc admits that there is a major problem with the 5 cylinder motor. They know that there is documented evidence with the cylinder head leaking air, causing trouble with idle, and truck speeds, but they refuse to produce a recall even after allthe money that is dished out for this truck. The truck will go died at stop signs and is in constant misfire state while driving down the interstate, not to mention the gas mileage that is wasted because of this issue.!!! my vin number is [xxx]. Truck has 142000 miles now and is constantly going dead when the wheels are turned hard, or just sitting at stop signs or red lights.!!!information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).
There is a high pitched whining coming from the engine whenever i use the air conditioning. The whine is not constant. It sounds like it makes the noise when the air conditioning compressor kicks in. I bought this vehicle on 4/29/2004.
Notified jof defect by gmc that engine intake valve seats are subject to abnormal wear, possibly resulting in misfiring and rough engine idling. They did not issue a recall, merely advising owners to take car to dealer if problem occurs. I maintain this is a safety issue. What if the misfire ignites the air filter? what if the vehicle stalls in traffic? what about pollution and cafe issues?
2004gmc canyon exhaust manifold broke and fell off while i was driving .
The consumer was having problems obtaining a window sticker for 2004 gmc canyon. *mr the vehicle whistles very loudly while in motion, almost causing accidents, especially at night. *sc
I have a 2004 gmc canyon and was pulled over and told that my brake lights were not working. When i looked up how to fix this problem or possible causes ( the bulbs were fine ) i noticed that there were a lot of hits for a recall for this exact problem on the exact make and model. The turn signals and night time lights all work fine, but no luck with any of the brake lights.

The brake light switch fails and we lose the brake lights and the cruise control. It has been replaced 2 times at the dealer and once by me after the recall under pe05065.
The brake lights on my 2004 gmc canyon have failed 4 times since i purchased the truck in may 2004.the dealership continues to insist that the problem is a faulty break light switch.however, the replacement switches continue to fail.

Dt*: the contact stated while driving various speeds and depressing the brake pedal, the brake lights failed intermittently.the contact replaced the brake light switch.the dealer was not alerted.
Cruise control failed in june 2006.rear brake lights failed in september 2006.found nhtsa id 06v139000 and showed to dealer service.however, they and gmc indicate that there was no recall on my vin.had to pay $149.36 to repair and missed work because it took all day to get part and install.gmc would not reimburse until it a recall for my vin is announced.
Dt*:the contact stated while brake pressure was applied, the rear brake lights failed to illuminate without warning.additionally, the cruise control failed to engage.the contact referred to the owner's manual that stated the brake lights switch and the cruise control are connected by the same wiring.the vehicle was not inspected by a dealer, but the dealer was alerted.there is a nhtsa recall # 06v139000 regarding the brake lights.the vin was not included in the recall.

I own a 2004 gmc canyon, and someone parked too close to my driverside for me to get into the vehicle, when i went to the passengers side i discovered there was no lock in the passenger door. I do not have keyless entry. I was trying to get into the vehicle to reach my medication. I had no way into the vehicle. The dealer did not disclose the absence of a passenger side door lock. This cannot be safe, what if a child was in the truck.
Concerns regarding no key lock on the passenger side of the 2004 gmc canyon.*mrthis vehicle has manual door locks, an a key lock is no longer provided on the right door. Consumer states this could be a problem in the event that emergency access were required.
There is no key lock cylinder on the passenger side door.*mr
I recently purchased a basic2004 gmc canyon (i.e., no power windows/locks).i was not informed that the passenger door did not have a keyed entry.i recently saw another complaint regarding the same issue on the nhtsa website and have seen other comments on other websites.additionally, a friend also bought a basic 2004 colorado and was not informed of the lack of this feature.aside from the nuisance in not being able to open the door directly, i agree with the other complaint on the nhtsa website that this is a potential safety issue if the driver's side door is blocked and a child or other person becomes injured or sick and you cannot open the passenger side door.personally, i believe that gmc should offer to correct this problem on these basic trucks or at least offer the modification at a reasonable price.i e-mailed gmc regarding this issue but the response basically skirted the issue.i also included the above comments to gmc on the customer satisfaction form.
For over 1 year now my 2004 g<c canyon has had intermittent brake problems. The abs brake sensors are bad just like on the full size trucks. I am dissapointed that this model is not included in the recall for abs brakes. My brakes lock up when first used then when they get warmed up the seem to work better although still grab very hard.
I pulled into the parking area of a grocery store and stoppedin the driving lane of the lot. Upon backing into a parking spot, the shift lever moved freely in my hand and would not shift gears.i rolled forward into a parking spot and called aaa assistance.upon aaa's arrival the technician crawledunder to truck and reattached the transmission cable.over the course of several weeks the cable came off the transmission linkage several more times.i made an appointment with the dealer to have the linkage replaced. The end of the cable was made of plastic and appeared corroded.

Dt:the contact stated the front left axle cracked. There was a loss of fluid, and the vehicle started to make noise. The dealer offered no free remedy because the vehicle was out of warranty. The manufacturer has not been contacted. Updated 12/14/05.
When driving, the vehicle would automatically kick into 4-wheel drive when making a turn in either direction.the vehicle has been doing this for about 6 months.there is no warning.when it kicks in 4-wheel drive, it stops like the brake is on.the consumer was almost involved in several accidents .the vehicle is regularly serviced.there are no other problems with the vehicle.*sc
My complaint is that in my2004 gmc canyon extended cab.it doesn't come with a passenger air bag on-off switch. My 6 year old child has to sit in the fold down seat in the back.the problem with this is the seats have no head rest so when she is properly belted in with the use of a booster seat it putsher head 3 inches from the glass of the rear window.the shape and size of the seat doesn't allow for the use of a larger style booster seat.she has already hit her head once on the side during a sudden turn to avoid an other car but if i am ever rear ended she will definitely hit the glass because of no head rest.
While driving the abs system will begin to engage, sometimes preventing me from stopping normally. After a few minutes of the abs engaging i will get a abs fault reading on my dash. The truck will then brake normally.

Brake problems-pulsating brakes, rotors and drums have been resurfaced and replaced numerous times within 15 months and 12,000 miles. The problem has still not been resolved.
I purchased 2004 gmc canyon used from dealership.i took vehicle home and within a couple days the abs light came on and would not turn off.i took vehicle back into the dealership and they looked at it and returned the vehicle to me.they said if it comes back on to let them know.within a week while driving down the road the abs light came back on and stayed on.took vehicle back in and they looked at the brakes and found something on them.they removed the gunk as they said and said it was a recall and was no charge for me.i have not found anything about a recall due to the abs staying on.
Had abs and emergency brake lights on already.
-the contact is calling regarding the lack of a key lock on the passenger side his 2004 gmc canyon.the contact feels that this is a safety issue for his child and wife or for anyone who sits on the passenger side of the vehicle.the contact states he has never experience this before in any of his gmc trucks in the last 30 years.
Undercarriage rust caused spare tire/wheel to fall from under the vehicle.
The contact owns a 2004 gmc canyon. While the vehicle was at an independent mechanic for routine maintenance, the contact was informed that the rear subframe and the truck bed were severely corroded. The contact was informed that the vehicle was unsafe and should not be driven. The local dealer stated that there were issues reported about rust to the rear subframe of some similar vehicles; however, there were no recalls to repair the vehicle. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted. The approximate failure mileage was 154,000.
On october 5, 2016, i took my truck over to my mechanic to have my brake lines bled as i replaced the right front caliper. When they took the right front tire off, they had shown me that the lower left control arm mount was going to fail. There was no failure as of yet and the vehicle was stationary when the problem was found. It was severely rusted out and cracked, as well as the frame and area around it was severely rusted and holes were visible.so i drove it home and took it over to a welder that has done repairs on the truck before and he said that it was too close to the suspension components and he wasn't going to fix it. So, as of now, i am looking for someone who specializes in automotive welding, but there not too many people here in my area who specialize in this kind of work. Inspection is coming up and i doubt it passes. Mechanically, i have has few problems with this truck and would much rather fix it than get rid of it. Pictures i am posting show the severity of the damage.
Truck frame has totally rusted out with only 80,000 miles on the truck. Body shows nothing, but the frame is disintegrating.i recently purchased this based on pictures which showed an extremely clean body and interior (true).got it delivered to my mechanic who called me to show me the holes in the frame!
The contact owns a 2004 gmc canyon. While driving 35 mph, the contact heard an abnormal rattling noise coming from the rear frame. The contact drove home and then took the vehicle to an independent mechanic who determined that the frame was severely corroded and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The dealer was not contacted. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact that the vehicle was not included in a recall. The failure mileage was approximately 119,730. A portion of the frame has completely rusted through right in front of the rear tire on the driver side.water must have gotten trapped inside of the box frame due to lack of drainage holes and a 12 inch section on the bottom of the frame has completely rusted off.one of the vertical welds going up the side of the frame has also rusted through in this spot.this vehicle is only driven on paved roads in urban minnesota.
The contact owns a 2004 gmc canyon. The contact stated that while driving 30 mph, after driving over train tracks the vehicle made a loud noise. The contact mentioned that after inspecting the vehicle he noticed that the frame was bent in half. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who did not offer any assistance since the failure was to do to a manufacturing defect. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure who did not offer any assistance since the vehicle was no longer under warranty. The failure and the current mileage was 94,000.
We had some repair work done and were told that the frame was rusted out so badly it was ready to break in half, leaving us with a car that is undriveable. This appears to be a common issue with other models of gmc trucks and the issue is not being addressed. Major safety issue!
I have a 2004 gmc canyon with no key hole in passenger side to unlock door. It is a extended cab rear seats for kids. When i parallel park in street i have to take my kids into oncoming traffic to unlock drivers door while they are in harms way. They could get hit by a oncoming car heading towards us.i feel it should have a safety recall on it.the 2007 models have a key hole in both doors ifeel mine should have one as well. The dealership didn't inform me about the defect.gm doesn't care about their past mistake, but they fixed the new models with key holes.they don't feel i have a valid claim worthy of getting a key hole in mine for my kids safety, they shouldn't have to enter the vehicle from the street.it's a safety issue.
Both of my tailgate straps broke 3/30/2006.

Skid plates were not installed on the consumer's vehicle although they are listed as standard equipment for his model.the consumer wanted skid plates installed on his vehicle as the package described or would like $500.00 to have it made.*tc
Shimmy, vibration, even small potholes jar the steering to either side.

The chassis has become severely rusted on left side where front of leaf spring is bolted to it. It is about to break off and it has been denoted as "unsafe to drive" by the local gmc dealership. Truck has been well-maintained and is in good condition otherwise. It has been garage-kept for the last 10 years. I bought it new 9/2004. The dealership just discovered problem today when i was having other routine work done.

Purchased 2004 canyon crew cab with 2.8l 4 cylinder, automatic and 1sc sle option package.truck appears to have vibration in body that occurs at different speed when a steady speed is held.usually shakes/vibration is most noticeable at 50~60 range.have has tires replaced twice, wheels checked and dealer has been unable to find source of problem after over 5,000 miles.problem appears to be design flaw in canyon suspension design.currently in dealer for third visit to try and correct.truck has had problem since day one and per dealer service manager all of his trucks on lot have similar problems.
Frame rotted out where leaf spring connects to frame
Vehicle hasvibration in it. Found the tires were bad. Consumerhad the tires replaced and balanced. However, that did not correct the problem. Contacted the dealer. They did a eva testing on it,consumer was told the vehicle met their standards. However, the vibration problem recurred.
My 2004 gmc canyon was found to have both front tires completly worn out along the inside edge at 10000 miles, gmc has several sevice bulletins about this problem but say they don't know what caused the tire wear and will not cover it under the warrenty
Shimmy, vibration, even small potholes jar the steering to either side.

While driving on local streets or highway, at any speed, a vibration occurs from the front tires.sounds and feels like a rock is stuck in the tire (shimmy). This happens every time vehicle is driven and sometimes more noticeable then others. Dealer rotated tires and state that no defects were found
Undercarriage rust caused spare tire/wheel to fall from under the vehicle.
The contact owns a 2004 gmc canyon. The contact stated that one stud broke off of each tire on the front driver side and rear driver side of the vehicle when the tires were rotated.
