The car has recently began to stall after stopping at lights and intersections, it usually stalls immediately after hitting the gas, pushing me into the middle of an intersection. While vehicle was parked in the garage overnight it caught on fire around the ignition switch, burning the whole front of the vehicle. Manufacturer showed that vehicle was fixed under recall in july of 96. Dealer checked service record and has no knowledge of vehicle being recalled or repaired.

While driving my car from burdines hialeah parking lot, the steering wheel started smoking and i pulled into the first parking spot that i saw. I turned the car off, but the smoke continued to increase andfinally the steering wheel caught on fire. The security guard in the parking lot used a fire extinguisher to kill the fire and the hialeah fire depart. Was also called and came in. When i called my mechanic regarding this issue, he told meit was weird, because he never heard of a steering wheel catching fire. I had the car towed at the mechanic. Once i came home, i checked the internet and found there was a recall for the ignition. I called ford the next day and reported what happened, they agreed that there was a recall on my vehicle. They told me not to have the car fixed until they took a look at it and investigate. In the meantime, i had to borrow a car because ford refused to lend me a car to go to work. It took them approximately 1 week to get back to me and they called me to tell me that they are responsible to have the car fix as they had sent via mail some recall notices. I told them that i never received these notices and that i moved to florida 3 years ago and never got anything from them. I further emphasized that if i did get the notice i would have definitely taken my car to a ford dealer since it would not have cost me a dime. Their representative could not care less. She told me that far as ford is concerned that the fire was my fault and that they are not responsible and would not help/assist with the expensive of repairing the car. In anticipation that i would be able to find an agency that might be able to help me recuperate my losses, i retained in the trunk of the car all theburned parts including the steering wheel in of the of chance that i may find some help.

Nhtsa recall96 v 071 000/imanufacturer's recall 95s28 concerning igturn signal and the headlights would work intermittently when start key chime would continue to go off even after removing the key. Consumer had to tap steering column to deactivate the chime. Dealer notified,and informed that this vehiclewas not part of the recall due to vin. Manufacturer stated that1992 tempo was not involved. Feel free to provide any further information.

E83z-19980-a control assy. & 10 pin electrical connector e83b-14a468-b....seems the chip inside the control panel fails, causing the connector block and the control panel to overheat, therefore melting both, especially around 12 awg (power wires) brn/org in particular. Don't know whether high setting should be avoided to prevent furthur electrical fires...but i feel this problem should be investigated.

The crankshaft pulley on the ford tempo is defective. We contacted the company about it and they told they knew it was a promblem, but that nothing would be done. We have spoken to many ford owners and many mechanics and they all say that this is a problem. I have two daughters that drive these cars to and from college. Onebroke down with this pulley problem and was completeley stranded.ford knows about the problem and refuses to issue a recal or reimbers owners for the huge exspensence of their faultycar componenets.

Tl * the contact owns a 1992 ford tempo. While driving at approximately 35 mph, the contact heard a noise. The contact stopped the vehicle and saw that some of the lug nuts were missing. A local mechanic inspected the vehicle. The vehicle was found to contain no catalytic converter; furthermore, neither the horn and nor any of the electrical component functioned correctly. The contact returned the vehicle to the dealer. The current and failure mileages were approximately 66,000.updated 5/12/10updated 06/11/10.

Upon having a flat tire, i followed the manual instructions and attempted to change the tire by using the factory installed jack.before i could elevate the car high enough to remove the flat, the jack buckled and the car fell.fortunately, no one was hurt.i realize my esp had expired, but the jack certainly is not designed to function properly and safely.the local dealership reported that neither they nor ford would be willing to compensate me for the $40 tow truck call nor would they replace the jack.the tow truck driver commented that he sees a lot of this on ford contours (the new version of tempo).do i have any recourse?ford has not provided an adequately safe jack on this model.

Fuel tank leaks and it has rusted completely out. Owner is very concerned for safety because fuel tank sits very close to muffler which can ignite fuel, causing possible fire hazard.

I really don't know the engine size or cylinders for sure.the driver's side motor shoulder belt has not worked for a time beforei was given the car in november, l997.it is stuck in a position midway in the track.it was not operating properly and then stopped completely.this is a problem equipment on this car and i need to know what i can do about it.i am a low-income senior living on social security and would like this belt to be operational but can't afford to fix it on my income.please let me hear from you.

11/18/96 driver side motorized shoulder belt inoperable..repaired under warranty; 8/14/97 passenger sidemotorized shoulder belt inoperable repaired for $295.00; 8/14/00 driver side in operable replaced again $306.00 (only because i got a $100 ticket ); 9/00 passenger side inoperable again..have not repaired.

The driver side automatic shoulder harness has failed 3 times in this vehicle. At around $150 each time it is getting quite expensive. I have contacted ford motor co. And they said they would turn in my complaint to the proper department. The question i have is that, ford recalled the probe for the same problem but not the tempos. Also i have looked locally and across the nation for replacement restraints at wrecking yards and they have all told me that when a tempo (2 door) comes in that is one of the first things to go. So this is an ongoing problem and should be recalled. I should never have to replace this safety harness 3 times. Your cooperation in this matter would be appreciated. Thank you, steven priddy.

My automatic seatbelt went out.had new one installed ($375.00) less then 2 months later had another one installed (it was found the first replacement was installed incorrectly) now that one is not working which was installed feb. 1999.it has not been working since last june.i put on over 50 miles a day driving to work so the 12,000 miles is out (which i don't understand what has to do with my seat belt functioning)i cannot afford to keep getting it "fixed".now i have no functioning seatbelt on the drivers side.(the right seat belt is not functioning either, but cannot afford to get that one "fixed" at the rate i am being charged for nothing.

Seat belt malfunctions.

Regarding the driver seat belt when opening the car door, the motor belt runs but the seat belt stays in place instead of retracting to allow me in the car seat. Once the lap belt is attached, the panel light flashes constantly that the seatbelt is not working. The retractor only goes as far as the upper left corner of the door. The motor runs but it will not allow the retractor to complete its full ascending and descending position. When i took the car to american ford in glendive, mt - i was told the part and labor would be in excess of $300. This is outrageous, especially when it is a law to wear a seatbelt, but how do you do that when the part is defective. Luckily, there is still the lap seatbelt. Regarding the cruise control - we have been at speeds of 70-75 mph and then the cruise control sticks. Once you turn off the cruise control - the car will continue to go speeds of 55-60 mph without having to press on the gas pedal. We have had this happen several times (4 times coming down a mountain pass - not a pretty picture). We no longer use the cruise control.dt

This is the third of four (1st odi #719304, 2nd odi #719313) complaints i'm fileing against g&c autobody for renting out vehicles with known safety defects for profit. On 01/19/2000 i rented the ford tempo, rental agreement #25778, repair order #000676, while our vehicle was to be repaired. I brought up the fact that the rental was missing the right side view mirror to casey puterbaugh (g&c customer service), she said "oh the parts must be on order". The passenger side automatic shoulder belt worked intermittently and when it didn't i would just get in and lean against it (our 1991 honda accord ex that was being repaired had automatic shoulder belts also). On 02/09/2000 as i leaned forward to get out of the vehicle the belt came sliding forward from behind me at a very fast speed, caught me behind the neck and pushed my head into the door glass and upper door frame above the glass. I took the car to g&c to get another rental and talked to gene crozat, he said the belt couldn't throw me forward and that he wasn't going to pay for any medical treatment. The petaluma police department said that they carry insurance for it. I had to see my doctor for the injury. When i was outside talking to gene about the injury, my wife was in the lobby and said she heard wilbert johnson telling the staff "this guy out here hasn't learned to stay out of the way of the automatic seat belt!". I received a certified letter on 02/26/2000 from g&c. It states, 1)the belt was behind me when i opened the door and threw me (this is correct), 2)it states i wasn't using the belt as it was intended and they are not responsible (how do you use a defective belt correctly? responsibility seems to be a burden to g&c autobody), 3)gene crozat, alayne saturday (controller), my wife and i all agree that the belt is defective re:it didn't slide forward and caused the injury.

The manual lap belt on the driver's side once latched, it would not unlatch. The dealer determined that there was a penny in the female buckle part which would not allow it to unlatch.

Front seat belt automatic retractor inoperable.........vehicle no longer has a three point restraint capability.........unsafe!!!!this is the third failure for the front automatic seat belt restraint system on three different vehicles.i'm the "duty" mechanic for our family and have become quite adept at fixing these restraints.i've replaced the nylon "feed belt" in the automatic retractors.........this is the "failing" part. In my observation, this is a design failure by ford.specifically, the nylon "feed/drive" belt fails because the restraint does not have a closed lubrication design which results in the belt binding in the motor gears and being destroyed as a direct result of dust/dirt entering the seat belt track under normal and resonable driving conditions.in my opinion, this is a ******safety****** issue and needs to be corrected.a quick glance at the database indicates that this is not an unusual problem.i'm requesting that the national highway traffic safety administration investigate.specific questions that i would like to see answered are:1.how many of these automatic seat belt restraint systems are still on the road??2.how many fatalities can be attributed to the failure of these devices??3.what is the incidence of supply requests for these restraints from the "ford"and, a final observation.i suspect that most folks who experiece problems with the automatic seat belt restraint systems on older ford vehicle choose to "abandon" their use instead of paying to have them fixed.there's a "purpose" for government.......the common good!!!

The horn quit working, the cooling fan has quit twice and had to be replaced , now the fan problen is in the wiring , havent fixed it yet, the fuel pump has been replaced twice, the righ headlight hs been replaced 7 times in 3 years, the drivers side seatbelt no longer works , the transmission leaks at the drivers side cv axle and the drivers side cv asle has had to be replaced 3 times in the last 3 years , the max fuel economy is 16 mpg (highway), the engine idles up and down at stop signs , the ignition switch on the steering wheel has came unplugged while driving twice , the a/c has quit working , the clear coat has just about all peeled off , the rear brakes have to be adjusted manually about once every 2 months , the alternator squeels , the rack-n-pinion steering seal bursted so the power steering no longer works , .

While driving vehicle noticed smoke coming from tires, pulled off road, then noticed flames, poured water on brakes, packed it w/mud, after a few hours drove vehicle home. Took vehicle in & had it repaired.

The tie-rod(outer) has been replaced (passenger side) twice within a year since i purchased the vehicle. The problem was found during tire replacement on the first time, and during a brake replacement on the second.there isa vibration when braking from a high speed (45mph or greater).each time the tie-rod is replaced, the vibration goes away for a short period of time, then returns gradually until the vibration is dominate during braking. Usually after about 3500 miles since replacement of tie-rod.

While driving eastbound on route 20 near oberlin, ohio i hit a pothole which was large enough to make my car swerve. The pothole was unavoidable because a car was driving past me in the other lane and at that point. No matter how far i would have gone to the right (near the white line) to avoid it, i would have still hit it. Luckily there was no one behind the vehicle passing me when i hit the pothole or else i would have been involved in an accident. When i got home i noticed some difference in the way the car was driving but payed not attention because it was not noticeable enough to take any action. On the following thursday may 12, 2005 i noticed my tire was set back all the way against the wheel well and there was now a noticeable difference in the way the vehicle was driving and the way it sounded. I took it to a garage shop and they said the sway bar was broken, the tire was set back and from hitting the pothole the tire of the rim had been bent.

While driving the gas pedal pops up and is really hard for the driver to get it down again.ttconsumer was told a slight sticking was normal for this kind of transmissioin, consumer states the sticking is not slight.

Regarding the driver seat belt when opening the car door, the motor belt runs but the seat belt stays in place instead of retracting to allow me in the car seat. Once the lap belt is attached, the panel light flashes constantly that the seatbelt is not working. The retractor only goes as far as the upper left corner of the door. The motor runs but it will not allow the retractor to complete its full ascending and descending position. When i took the car to american ford in glendive, mt - i was told the part and labor would be in excess of $300. This is outrageous, especially when it is a law to wear a seatbelt, but how do you do that when the part is defective. Luckily, there is still the lap seatbelt. Regarding the cruise control - we have been at speeds of 70-75 mph and then the cruise control sticks. Once you turn off the cruise control - the car will continue to go speeds of 55-60 mph without having to press on the gas pedal. We have had this happen several times (4 times coming down a mountain pass - not a pretty picture). We no longer use the cruise control.dt

Throttle sticks causing late shifting of automatic transmission.same problem causes early and rough downshifting.while early downshifting is merely uncomfortable now, this could be a severe safty hazard on ice and snow.also the sticking throttle has required extra braking effort to keep the vehicle from running away.your website lists eleven different service bulletins relating to this problem, and several previous complaints.i have contacted ford motor co about this matter, and they have replied that fixing their defect is my problem.in light of the numerous bulletins and complaints, the potential safety problems(i.e. Loss of control on ice and snow and running away), i feel that an investigation of this defect should be made and a recall instituted.

While using the air condition during a warm day the blower came on and was not able to be controlled by the knob.the air blew at high speed for 10 minutes.i turned off the car and went to shop.returned to car, drove for about 5 minutes and the blower suddenly stopped, the car proceeded another 3 blocks when i notice smoke coming from the vent.i pulled the car over and checked under the hood, no fire returned to the inside of car and saw more smoke.i looked under the dashboard and saw a red glow of a fire which was now burning the underside of the glove compartment.i managed to beat the fire out and burned my hand in the process.i had some one check to make sure the fire was out a,nd proceeded to an emergency hospital treatment for the burns.i did see where there was a recall for the heaters and airconditioners fans for this sameproblem that might cause a fire and i would like to have the damage repaired to my automobile.
