Was in an accident and the airbag didn't deploydid some research on the internet and found out there is a wire under the driver's seat that is too short.if someone tall like me pushes the seat back all the way it stretches the wire and causes the safety system to error and shut off.an airbag warning light lights up on the dashboard.ford issued a bulletin to the dealers and are well aware of the problem.i've read cases of people being charged $600 to fix it.

Air bag sensor light remained on.the dealer inspected vehicle, but could not solve the problem, the air bag sensor light continued to stay on.the dealer installed new wiper blades.

On 12/14/03 i was driving east at 50 mph.when a car ran a stop sign and a flashing red light.my ranger edge fully impacted his vehicle directly in the passenger side at 50 mph.the air bags did not deploy.i pushed his vehicle off of the right side of the road and into a telephone pole which broke and came down across the top of my truck.i was wearing my seat belt & shoulder harness.i was knocked out for approximately. 20 minutes.i sustained injuries to my right knee, left elbow and to the back of my head.the front end of my ranger edge was pushed back into the engine compartment about 16 inches.this impact covered the whole of the front end of the ranger with enough force to bend the frame of the truck between the back of the cab and the front of the bed.i have officially informed ford and sent all the required information including pictures but have not received a response from them.they said they might do an investigation??? *la

Seat belt never stays connected ( pops out) all speeds. (5 yrs) i asked dealer about fixing he said my warranty expired buy a new one (ford does not care about safety after warranty date)the airbag light will stay on for a week then off for a month then repeat ( 5 yrs)door ajar light has never turned off (maybe it will burn out so i don't see it anymore)tailgate latch replaced 3 times ( dang that cheap plastic)front end realigned numerous times (anti nascar, always turns right)engine shudders bad few times a year(bad gas maybe once, others probably not)coil pack replaced twice (im still under 60,000 miles)rear window leaks also :)

Hard front end collision with telephone pole. Ice on road. Total damage, vehicle status is scrap. Driver injury. Head and jaw. Air bag did not deploy. This is second front collision. First collision, vehicle was repaired. Struck by wrong way driver. $3400 damage. Air bag did not deploy. Repairs at ford dealer, st. Louis , mo.

Off roading in a 2002 ford ranger 4x4 equiped with the off-road package.was going over terrain and the airbags deployed. The approx. Speed at the time time was less than 20/mph. I was in 4x4 low so high speeds were not possible.upon entering the terrain the airbags deployed. There was no front end damage or any collison.redlands ford the dealer, ordered and inspection from ford. To date neither redlands ford or corporate ford had provided written documentation of the inspection or any results from the inspection. Only saying that the airbags operated within parameters.

The contact owns a 2002 ford ranger. The contact stated while driving 30 mph, the air bag warning light was illuminated. Neither the dealer nor the independent mechanic was not made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and referred the contact to file a complaint with the nhtsa. The failure mileage was approximately 50,000.

I was going home from work at about 15:45 on colorado highway.66.i was traveling east bound at 65 mph when the airbags went off in my 2002 ford ranger.because of this i ended up crossing the opposing lane of traffic and into the ditch.this caused the front end suspension to be damaged.i contacted ford about this and was basically given a run around for 9 weeks.on april 13, 2006 ford contacted me and said that their engineers had determined that the airbags went off because i went into the ditch not before. So they are not going to do anything about this. Fortunately there were no fatalities or accidents.

I am afraid to drive the truck now because if the airbag goes off, it will hurt me.

Truck hydroplained and hit the median wall at 50 mph. Neither airbag deployed.

My airbag light came on with blinking 4x then 7 times.the ford dealership said the reason my air bag light came was because the connection was dirty.my question to them was why is their electrical connections in need of cleaning?then they turn around and charge you labor to clean the connection.

The airbags failed to deploy in a head on collision traveling 50 mph

Airbag light came on.dealer said harness under front passenger seat came undone from moving seat back and forth when entering rear seat of vehicle.they reconnected harness and cleared computer lightcost $162.50 to reconnect harness . Would like refund from ford for defect in wiring harness.no new parts involved in fixing problem with harness. I had48,678 miles guaranteed for 50,000 miles.

After my 2002 ford ranger was recalled for a cruise control issue, i kept blowing fuses.in taking it in to my ford dealer they indicated a short within the driver's side airbag deployment system.went through about 20 - 10 amp fuses before i could take it in.failure of a safety item like the airbag should not happen especially with less that 70,000 miles on the vehicle.

My son was driving his ford ranger xl 2002when due to a pedestrian, the car in front of him slammed on their brakes causing my son to rear end them. Snowy weather was a factor. The brakes didn't catch as they should have. His airbags blew up, not deploy- blew up and caught fire! the steering wheel blew up! extensive damage occurred to the steering column steering wheel and dashboard components. The starter went out and the truck would not start. Insurance deemed the truck totaled. Obviously the airbags were defective!! was there a recall concerning any of these components that we were never informed of? what compensation is available to us for this obvious manufacturers defect?...updated 02-03-15

My son was involved in a single vehicle accident when he drove into a sandy ditch while avoiding another vehicle. He hit a sand hill head on, at approx 25 mph. The ranger/edge was totalled, no one was injured, but the air bags never depolyed. The body shop looked at the vehicle and determined there are no air bag sensors, or air bag harnesses for the sendors located in the front portion of the truck. The shop called ford and requested a diagram of where the sensors and wiring should be. Using the ford diagram it is obvious there were no sensors or wiring. I am wondering how many other ford rangers / edges are out there with no sensors at the front bumper. Contacted ken grody ford and talked with the service manager who did not appear concerned. He directed me to the ford complaint department.

Labor day 2002 my 2002 ford ranger 2.3 let me down. Approx. 4000 mile on itleaving sequim washington on hwy 101 going to port angeles washington, i was traveling 55 miles hour.all a sudden i smelt gas, then my ranger started to spew out lots of black smoke.the motor quit and i pulled off thi hwy. It won't statr up.called the dealer, they were just closing up time 4:30 pm labor dayi sopke to a saleman, servide dept not working, no one to help me.i told the salesman i would go back and try to start it, if i got it stsrtid i would take it home. No help the ranger was insured.i went back, after a few times i got it started. Black smoke waw coming out of the tail pipe. I revered the engine up and was able to drive it home in second and third gear maintaning 35 to 40 miles an hour.gopt up the nex morning the ranger would not start till i tried it several times.it did start and ran pretty goog but with ignition troubles.traveling, motor running1800 to 2800 rpm in 5th gear ranger felt like it would shift up and doun. Timing was chaning. Some time engine woul shut down then come back on.ford dealer can't fined any thing wrong. Approx 16000 miles later i took ranger to a garage. There computer showed the engine woud drop two clynders now and then. Shut down and right back on. Took ignition print out to ford dealer, they still say there is nothing wrong.

The contact owns a 2002 ford ranger.the contact was informed by his neighbor that his vehicle was smoking in the driveway.the contact noticed black smoke coming from the vehicle.the fire department disconnected the battery and stated that there was electrical failure.there were no flames present, but a fire report was filed.a case was filed with the manufacturer and they stated that the anti-lock braking system caused the failure.no repairs were made to the vehicle.the vin was unknown.the failure and current mileages were less than 99,000.

I have learned of this "auto rev limiter" function on my 2002 ford ranger pickup. I noticed this when clearing some cleaning fluid form the intake of the engine. It limited the engine to 3500 rpm were it oscillated. I have heard of other instances of a governor set at 85 mph on this truck. I feel this is un-necessary for ford to install this and not mention it in the owners manual. If it is mentions i do not see it. I feel this proposes a risk factor in drivingor passing when a little extra speed may be needed. I have not exceeded 85 mph in this truck and knowing it is limited to this speed helps me judge weather or not to purchase another ford with this restriction or if i need to act in an emergency what the truck is capable of. It needs to told to the buying public before a purchase is made on this truck.

Cant cotrol car want to lunge forward or stall hard to drive like this i am told it is the (etb) also door will not stop chiming

I need help. I was driving from my childs school the other day, while accelerating down the hill the car suddenly shut off. I lost complete control of the car and if it wasnt for the parking lot to the right i would have come upon a red light may have been in a major car accident. On august 11, 2003 i was driving to a scout meeting, while coming upon a stop sign i proceeded to tern on my head lights and the same thing began to occur. All of the instruments went off and suddenly came back on. But because we bought this car from a used car dealer i dont know if it is still covered under warranty. But after reading a lot of the horror stories on this site about people having problems with there rangers also i am considering getting rid of the truck.

My wife and i were driving on hwy 79from palistine tx to jacksonville tx thursday 7/11/2016 when we noticed smoke coming out from under the truck we pulled over and noticed fire under the hood i tried to poor water on it all it did was just get worse and our truck all my work tools my lively hood blew up.

Truck combustion while parked on private property. No investigation by insurance company. Fire dept classified cause as unknown.

Dome light wont shut off & door ajar light on . The dome light could start a fire.

I am having multiple problems with my 6 month old truck. A strange oil loss that was loosing 1-2 quarts of oil a week, now fixed for the moment. The clutch disengages if any pressure is applied to the clutch pedal and will not engage until the pedal is fully released, dealer claims its normal. Various electrical problems with this heap, including failing sensors, interior light coming on when it wants to, and the check engine light comes on occasionally. This truck has starting problems sometimes, you have to crank the engine for a long time(up to 30 seconds sometimes) before it will start. Had to have a tire replaced with 1066 miles on the vehicle because some of the tread was beginning to come off, vehicle was realigned at the same time to cure a pull to the right which did nothing still pulls to the right. I have tried to get in contact of ford motor company to get this vehicle replaced under a lemon law to no avail. I get told a story and put off, the dealership i bought this thing from does the same thing tries to fix it to no avail and puts me off. I paid 15 thousand dollars for this truck and now may lose my job because it is not dependable! something must be done this is not how to treat a repeat customer, this being my 4th ford product and my last. *nlm

Door ajar light stays on after car is started and interior lights stay on for about ten minutes after vehicle is stopped before going out.does not happen if very cold 20 degrees f, or less.also drivers door will partially open occasionally when driving to the safety catch position.door opening is normally at lower speeds, less than 30 mph and mostly when going around turns. Started almost a year ago.

The consumer states that vehicle rocks while driving.the consumer had taken the vehicle to the dealer, and the dealer suggested that the spark plugs needed replacing.*mrthe consumer sates that the vehicle goes at a rate of 2500+3000 rpm 202 ranger, shakes in the net or park.the engine cuts out and jerks at high speeds, also when passing vehicles or trucks on the freeways-cuts out, its very unsafe, and the brakes pulsate/shake when applied at highway speeds.(6000 rpm, plus the speedometer shows 120 mph)certified mechanic(s) have stated that there's something wrong with the vehicle.*scc

The 2002 ford ranger was coming to a complete stop at about 3 mph, when all of a sudden the truck accelerated really high. I threw the gear selector into neutral and it continued to race but the wheels were no longer spinning, i hit the gas pedal and then threw it back into drive with no further problems. This is very concerning and i need help please. Thank you.

Engine error code p303 displayed and engine missing on that cylinder.ford tsb 05-26-3 states head replacement necessary to correct.this appears to be a generic issue with the 3.0 liter vulcan engines,. Car will not pass emissions inspection until this is repaired.

Engine ejected spark plug from cylinder number three. Mechanic said it is a common problem with ford vehicles manufactured with an aluminum head. I am fortunate that this occurred while accelerating from a stop sign at only 20mph. At higher speeds, the mechanic said the spark plug may have ejected itself straight through the hood after which, the engine often catches fire because of the gasoline spurting out of the cylinder. Repair included a helicoil tap kit and new spark plugs. This is a very dangerous defect and should be addressed by ford and all government safety agencies. This truck has very low mileage for it's age and has been taken very good care of. There is no reason why this should have happened other than faulty design and use of an aluminum head.

I have a 2002 ford ranger 2.3l 4 cyl an when i start to drive my car will shift from 1st to 2nd so rough that my car jumps forward and then my overdrive light starts blinking and then everytime i press the gas from stopped it shifts very rough. I have been researching this problem and seems like a lot of people have this problem with this model. Also when i take off there is a loud vibration sounding like it is coming from the dash or engine compartment i don't know what this is about but figured i would add that in.

I was coming home from work and i went to park my truck in the front yard. When the truck was about to stop the engine roared, as if i really hit the gas pedal and i had to jam the car in park to get it to stop.today, as i was coming home from work, i was coming to a four way stop in a school zone. When i was almost stopped the truck engine accelerated and ihad to put the truck in park to get it to stop. I need to know is there a recall from ford for this. I cannot let anyone else drive my truck for fear it will happen to them and they will not know what to do.

I own a 2002 ford ranger with a 3.0fev it has had the problem related to nhtsa id 10018746, ford tsb 052212.while the truck was under warranty the dealers could not "find the problem" after the warranty ran out they found this issue and are willing to fix it for several hundred dollars.

I owned a 2002 ford ranger with 45,000 miles on it.my daughter was driving it and came to a stop at an intersection after exiting an expressway.black smoke started coming out of the engine compartment.within 10 minutes, the trucks engine compartment and cockpit were completely engulfed in flames and the truck was destroyed.

This vehicle is unsafe at high speeds.recently i bought a used 2002 ford ranger xlt, w/ 4.0 liter engine, and i noted the 125 mph speedometer. Last evening an 18 wheeler cut into my lane and i quickly accelerated hitting about 90 mph on the interstate to avoid being crushed.however just as i was clearing the front end of the semi the engine began to faulter andthe vehicle began to slow.pressing on the accelerator didn't increase vehicle speed or engine rpm.i was scared out of my wits.i called the dealership that night and they agreed to look at the vehicle.which they later deferred on (basically they knew of the defect).after talking to several service department reps at the dealership i was told the fuel ejectors are designed to cut out at high speeds.i pressed further and talked to other dealerships to find out the vehicle has been deteremined unsafe at high speedsby ford, so this safety feature was incorporated in the vehicle.i got little "positive" responses when i asked why a)the speedomoter went to 125 mph (noting that oler vehichles manufactured in the mid to late 1980's only had 85 mph speedometers) b)why am i paying several thousand dolars for a 4.0 liter engine and c) why is this unsafe condition not disclosed anywhere or at any time during my purchase?i asked if fatty foods are bad for me would i pay full price for a 2 lb. Steak and only be served a 6 oz. One?he had no response.

Having issues with my truck i thought might be transmission now the dealer says it is a cam sensor. The truck sputters and stops causing several near misses this has been an issue for several years but the dealer was not bale to find the problem.

The contact owns a 2002 ford ranger. While driving 35 mph the vehicle began to over heat and smoke came out of the engine. The contact was able to stop the vehicle and shut the engine off; however, as soon as he shut the engine off, the vehicle caught fire. The contact attempted to extinguish the fire and was unsuccessful. The entire vehicle was engulfed in flames and was completely destroyed. The cause of the fire has not been determined. The vin was not available. The failure mileage was 146,000.

Dt:the contact stated while driving on the highway the #3 spark plug blew out of theengine. The vehiclewas towed to a mechanic. Contacted the manufacturer, and the contactwas told this problem was not covered under warranty. Repairs will be made at the contact'sexpense. Ak

Intermittently while driving 35 mph vehicle stalled.vehicle was towed to the dealership and kept for two days, but could not duplicate or correct the problem. *mr

Consumer wasdriving aproximately 10 mph, andwhile making a right turn, the vehicle stalled. Consumer lost control of steering and brakes.

Since about 10,000 miles my engine has made a crackling noise under acceleration.'ve talked to many other ranger owners who are having the same problem.some of them said they took their trucks to a dealership and the service department said the noise was from the timing in the engine and the problem could not be fixed.it was to my understanding that if a automotive company makes a mistake and it is not easily repairable and is frequent there should be a recall so the problem could be fixed.i'm going to sell my truck in the spring because of this problem.i have no idea if this timing problem will have any long term effect on the engine itself but i do not want to wait around and see since ford only offers a 3 year 36,000 mile warranty and i have 45,000 miles on my truck.

The contact owns a 2002 ford ranger. The contact stated heheard a clicking noise coming from the engine while drivingvarious speeds. The vehicle was taken to an independent repair shop where the contact was informed that the timing chain needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 32,000 and the current mileage was 58,300.

A rattle in the engine compartment of a 2002 ford ranger (64,000 miles) attributed to the timing chain. No damage yet, but ihave asked around and found this to be a widespread problem and in some cases, leading to engine failure.

A plastic water heater control valve in the vehicle cooling system denatured and crumbled, leaking coolant out of the vehicle which could have caused an engine seizure had i not been aware of the situation.this is the second plastic part failure (first was the thermostat/temp sensor housing) which failed and leaked coolant during the warranty interval.cooling systems are no place for plastic parts.

Truck pulls to the right especially at highway speeds. At times severe vibration and rubbing noise. Safety definetly an issue when driving vehicle. More recently 4x4 engaged & truck tilted to front right and made loud grinding noise, could only drive5mph or so. Put in reverse and was able to drive it at highway speeds but still pulls, vibrates and is getting worse. Now, a oil leak found. Also, anti lock brakes are locking up. Fan motor cooler not working correctly.

Intermittently while driving there wasvibration in the rear end of the vehicle.tires were rotated 4 times, but the vibration still occurred. Also, at 5,000 miles, cooling fan bearing/hub squeaked because of moisture build up. The fan belt was replaced.squeaking noise recurred at 10,000 miles. Dealership lubricated the fan belts. But, the squeaking noise recurred at 35,0000. The fan belt needed to be replaced again.

2002 ford ranger. Consumer writes in regards to safety defect with plastic intake manifold *tgwthe consumer stated recently while driving, suddenly and without warning as he left off the accelerator to make a turn , the engine rpm's dropped and the vehicle started idling erratically and almost slatted out completely. The consumer read on a website where a plastic plug could come out of the front of the plastic intake manifold. He removed the power steering pump and soon after, he discovered the plastic plug and about a 3/8 hole in the intake manifold. The hole caused the vehicle to loose vacuum in the system, therefore it was the cause of the erratic idle/stall. The consumer stated he welded the part back together after learning it would cost anywhere from $500-$1000 to replace.

The contact owns a 2002 ford ranger.the contact stated that the check engine light illuminated.the mechanic replaced the thermostat unit however, after the repair the vehicle continued to leak coolant. Upon further inspection, the mechanic found a small hole in the engine block.in addition, he found that the engine block rusted.the current and failure mileages were 62,000.

While turning a corner the vehicles engine shuts off.vehicle will start right up again, consumer feels unsafe because the brakes and steering go out. Cause of stalling is unknown.please provide any further information. Mr

I had a pinging, they changed a sensor, it went away for a while and now it is back, then they cleaned the carbon out of the engine and now it surges, and still pings. They put it on a machine and the machine said it is ok. I am not satisfied.

While starting vehicle and warming up, engine misfired, had to refill fuel constantly.dealer has been notified however does not have a remedy for problem.

While accelerating or attempting to pass another vehicle the engine starts to cut off like it is starving for fuel. Started happening about 1 year ago and continues to this date.

I boughta 2002 ford ranger in april of 2006 and now there seems to be an issue with the oil pressure sensor on the engine failing the sensor causes the gauge to "twitch" i bought the vehicle with this unknown defect has there been a recall on this matter? i have visited some on line bulletin boards and it seems to be a common defect.

While driving engine produces a knocking sound. Theconsumer stated that the vehicle doesn't run properly on the 87 octane gas. The engine had a spark-knock condition.the consumer feels this type of problem is unacceptable for a new vehicle. *ph*nlm

The vehicles engine shuts off as it is being accelerated, or at cruising speed. The engine is the only system affected but causes vehicle to be undrivable for around 5-10 seconds until vehicle puts itself back in gear after shutting off.this occurs randomly sometimes right away after vehicle is started and moved or other times after longer periods of driving. It has occurred repeatedly, when the vehicle engine comes back and it does put itself back into gear and you start to accelerate again it will cut off.it has caused operator not to be able to accelerate to merge onto highways, pull out onto roads, or to maintain cruising speeds in roads or highways.it has been taken to ford dealership for repairs 3 times. Each time the engine control relay diode has been changed and blamed for problem. The vehicle has been connected to computer and driven(first time at ford repair shop), the engine has cut out causing vehicle to stop accelerating and the computer shows that nothing is happening. It continues to read that the vehicle is running fine.i have personally replaced coil pack, and throttle position sensor.the first time diode was replaced the vehicle ran for almost 8 months then problem recurred. It was taken to ford and diode replaced again, this time lasting only 2-3 months. It was taken to ford the 3rd time for diode to be replaced, this time lasting only 2 weeks. I called the ford shop and spoke to manager and was told that the entire wiring harness would have to be replaced because they could not figure out why the engine was cutting out. I was also informed that the wiring harness was not available for them to get and that there was nothing they could do to fix my vehicle, so i was to continue to drive it even though the engine shuts off while driving.

I get 14 miles to the gal on the freeway the sticker said 19. The engine shakes at idle. It has a lean idle miss. The shaking is very bad at times. Transmission does not shift right, causing bad gas mileage. I have taken it to three different dealers they all say there is no problem. But 14 miles to the gal is not acceptable.

Ford is knowingly selling a defective engine in their ford ranger.my factory ordered truck has what could be described as a severe, constant "rough idle".i have had it back to the dealer a number of times (the first time was 2 days after i purchased it).ford has sent their district engineer to look at this issue.he performed a "g-force" test which registered 0.6.ford service agrees that it has this issue.ford's stance is that all 2002 rangers have this issue (nuisance is the word they used) and they are not going to do anything to "fix" it.the engineer told me that ford implemented "softer" motor mounts to try and allieviate this issue which my truck already had.so ford is very aware of this issue.the model i test drove did not exhibit this issue.ford's stance is that it is my fault for buying this vehicle.in other words, if i wanted a smoother idling engine, i should have purchased a different manufactuer's vehicle.this may not be the proper forum for this type of issue, but i wanted to make the government aware of what ford is trying to put over on the consumer.as far as ford's contention that "they all do this" i would have to disagree.i have been to all the "ranger" forums and user sites and no one is reporting this issue on their 2002 rangers.please help if you can.

2002 rangers are apparently equipped with a speed control chip that limits top end speed and rpm's. I was not informed that my vehicle was going to be crippled by this device or i would not have purchased it. When driving in the western us, this limiter has almost caused me to be in an accident 4 times. Ford should be compelled to tell buyers that this vehicle has a speed limiter before the sale is closed.

The vehicles engine idles roughly which causes the vehicle to shake. I noticed this problem instantly after picking up the vehicle from the dealership. I had taken it in to dean sellers ford in troy michigan with 500 miles on it and i was told that it was a new engine for the ranger, and it was suppose to drive like that. However, after continuing to drive the vehicle and experiencing stall outs i believe there is something wrong with my engine. I started up other rangers at other dealerships and yes, when first started the idling is rough but then kicks down to a normal running idle. I have had a service tech. Agree with me that the idling seems to be rough on my vehicle but nothing has been found to correct the issue. Nor has anything been found on the stall outs. I have also experienced "jolting" or "surges" of power while driving. Attempting to speed up 5 or 10 mph produces a jolt forward as though you have gunned the engine, at times it feels as though the vehicle is speeding up on it's own. I truly believe ford is manufacturing faulty engines with this particular vehicle and i am completely 100% unsatisfied with my purchase of this vehicle. I have owned a 1995 ranger and had never experienced a problem with that year line. Someone of authority needs to investigate this vehicle and consumers should be compensated for the many issues ford has with ranger engines. Your assistance and power is much appreciated.

Purchased a new 2002 ford ranger 4x4 4dr xcab with the 4.0 engine.vehicle identification # [xxx], on september 14, 2002.after coming to stop, engine has surged. First time rpm went to 1500 and could keep the truck in place with brake pressure. Took to dealer for 3000 service in december and reported problem. Dealer performed normal 3000 service and found no problems, however they asked to be informed if it happens again.this time engine surged to over 3000 rpm and could not keep truck stopped pushing into another truck in front of me.we hit bumpers and the only way to stop my truck was to slam the transmission into park. Are there any other reported problems of engine surge like this.using regular gasoline in the tank. Taking truck back to dealer for inspection. Vehicle has stalled out while driving on three (3) occasions and was prevented from stalling on one other. First occurrence was on 06/14/02 with approximately 2800 miles, vehicle was traveling approx. 15-20 miles an hour and turning into a parking lot. Second failure was on 07/09/02 with approx. 3650 miles, vehicle again was making a turn at approx. 15 mph. This failure occurred the evening of picking up the vehicle from jerome duncan ford for service. However, jerome duncan refused to itemize this problem on their repair list because the vehicle was currently running and did not stall out in their possession. Third failure occured 08/11/02 with approx. 5700 miles, vehicle was traveling at approx. 25-30 mph attempting to turn or curve to the left. Each time this "stall out" has occurred the engine has been warm and the gas tank had 1/4 or more of gas in it.i prevented the fourth occurrence from happening when stopped at a traffic light and giving the engine some gas while keeping one foot on the brake. I have taken this vehicle in for servicing for this problem 3 times, however, 2 of the times jerome duncan ford has refused to document it, saying the vehicle is running and appears to be in working order. Only once has this vehicle been documented with a ford dealer for issues, russ milne ford 24777 hall rd. Macomb mi 48042 (810) 948-7700. The technicians there have not been able to determine the cause for the stall outs. I will once again take my vehicle in and have this problem documented to ensure my case under the michigan lemon law. Because the vehicle "stalls out" all power is lost, enabling me to steer properly and possibly endangering myself and others. On the second occurrence i narrowly missed a head on collision. I would like this matter investigated and would appreciate your assistance. Thank you.

Exhaust odor after engine reaches normal operating temp. The odor is like rotten eggs, sulphur, phosphorus. Problem began when vehicle was approx. 9 months old with less than 10,000 miles. Vehicle was bought new and is a 2002 ford ranger with 4.0, auto, 4x4. Vehicle now has 17,405 miles and has been back to the dealer 4 or 5 times without resolve and is about to go back again. The dealer said they have done everything ford has advised them to do and they do not know what to try next. The dealer said ford will not authorize replacing the catalytic convertor because the problem would start over again when the new convertor "burns" in. The dealer told me the first time it would go away in approx. 5,000 miles. The smell remains and, if anything, is getting worse. The frustration began when i took the truck in the first time for the exhaust odor and a severe jerk when putting the trans. Into reverse. The service manager said the "jerk" was because the vehicle (10,008 miles) was getting "broke in" but the smell was due to the convertor just "burning in" because it was new! i've had 5 rangers since 1996 and purchase 3 other vehicles since 1990 and have never had this odor in any of them.

Ford 2002 ranger driven by my minor son to school approx 3 miles.while stopped at a traffic light, a motorist behind my vehicle alerted my son the vehicle was on fire.my son and other motorist pulled into next available parking lot where the other motorist was able to extinguish the fire on the driver's side taillight with worl gloves. At approx 8:00 a.m. I drove the vehicle directlyto original dealership to report the vehicle fire and determine repair cost and payment method (owner vs. Ford).hall ford could not initially identify why the fire started in the taillight and forward incident report to their regional manager, who in turn, forwarded the report to ford customer service division.i received a letter from ford customer service division on nov 28, 2006 that suggested i go through my insurance company who could file subrogation claim against ford motor company.the cause of the fire remains unresolved.there is no reason for a taillight to catch on fire unless there is material defect.without the alertness of another motorist, the fire could have continued up the wire harness and pass the fuel nozzle.

Turn signals began to fail to flash on occasion. A loud buzzing sound seemed to come from the flasher. A slight pulling back on the indicator stalk will sometimes cause the signals to work. This, however also causes the headlights to flash (flash to pass). The windshield wipers also come on occasionally when the turn signal is activated. Happens with both right and left turn signal. I am awaiting appointment to have repaired.

2002 ford ranger, turn signallever does not engage when turning left (blinker malfunction).the consumer stated the right turn signal did not engage at times, but was less frequent than the left. The dealer failed several attempts to fix the blinker problem before finally giving up.

While drivingfuel tank started leaking. Dealer notified. Please provide additional information.

While looking under my truck i noticed that the gas tank was hanging down on one end (rear) almost theground, upon further inspection i found that one of the two straps that hold the tank up to the underside of the truck had broken loose, the part that attaches the strap to the truck frame had rusted away, i feel this is a very dangerous condition and could have been catastrophic.

The contact owns a 2002 ford ranger. The contact stated the fuel lines on the vehicle were dry rotten and broke. The contact smelled gasoline and took the vehicle to the dealer to have all of the fuel lines replaced. The vin was unknown. The failure mileage and current mileages were 100,000.

2002 ford ranger xlt, 4.0l, difficult fueling truck, gasoline just spurts back out of the refueling nozzle even on the slowest gas pump setting, reading several other complaints of the same problem, this is also an environmental issue due to all the excess gasoline running out of the nozzle. The venting system is defective.

After filling gas tank, vehicle was driven approximately nine miles and went from a full tank to less than a half tank of gas. Vehicle was covered in gasoline. Vehicle was towed to nearest dealership for repair. After review of nhtsa web site identified that this is not an isolated incident.concerns were raised with repairing dealership as well as selling dealership. Requested failure analysis of failed part to determine root cause of failure, informed that dealerships do not have personnel trained to do this. Informed dealerships that i do not feel vehicle is safe and would like them to take the vehicle back due to it only being 35 days old and 1700 miles, told them that i would consider the purchase of a different ford vehicle. Was informed that ford does not have a buy back program and any negotiation would have to be dont with regional ford rep. Waited until 12/11 to her from rep and she was in a meeting and told me she would call me back. After not hearing from rep for over a week i began to leave her voice mail and still did not get a return call. Continued to call customer relations line and dealership and still did not hear anything on my concern. Finally heard from ford rep on 12/15 and was offered and esp 5 yrs 75k miles, informed rep this was unacceptable due to the length of my time that was wasted on this issue. Rep informed me that there is not a problem with the fuel line on the ranger, i informed rep that there are other documented cases of this on the nhtsa web site. Ford rep became defensive and ended up hanging up on me. While waiting to hear from this rep i requested a dsb application and it took three requests to finally get one, this took from 12/21 until 01/16 to recieve, never recieved a phone call from dealership after requesting dsb app as informed by customer line that i would. Currently in process of submitting dsp app. Problem unresolved pending results of dsb.

As i was driving on an interstate highway, i attempted to pass another vehicle. The other vehicle sped up; i slowed; he slowed; obviously a game of some kind was being played that i wanted no part of, so i tried to get away and when i hit 85mph, my vehicle ceased to accelerate and began acting like it was starved for gas. I spoke to my dealer and ford motor company and learned that the vehicle has a "rev limiter" which is apparently a governor that stops all acceleration at 85mph.as far as i have been able to determine, ford is the only vehicle made that has such a limiter and it cannot be removed or altered. When i asked ford why, i was told it was for my own good since speed limits are maximum of 70-75 mph across america . I then asked why the speedometer went to 120 mph and they said the vehicle was designed for it but ford chose to not let drivers exceed 85. I asked why ford felt compelled to hold a driver to 85 when every other manufacturer did not and how safe was it to allow me to go only 10mph over the maximum speed when that also meant i could go 55mph over in an area posted for 30mph. Same answer--for my own good. One of the many problems with this is that in rare emergency occasions (such as passing an 18 wheeler and someone ahead pulling out from a side road coming in my direction--there are probably better examples), i may be past the point of being able to slow down or another car may be behind me, and we all get killed because ford decided their cars should go slower than every comparable vehicle on the road. I could understand all cars topping off at 85, but not only one--and not one that has every indication it would go faster in an emergency and ford never telling you anything to the contrary until the emergency occurs. This may be the first, or only, complaint you ever receive about a car going too slow, but it was a real problem and i found it extremely frustrating and dangerous.

Slowing down while coming up to a signal light, as i made the right turn the truck suddenly stalled and the power steering and brakes became hard to handle. The truck however started up right away but had a loss of power for about half a mile to my home. After turning the truck off and starting it up again, the truck ran fine until the other day when it stalled and lost power again. Took the truck to the dealer and they said that they could not duplicate the problem. Reading all the similar complaints about the ford rangers has me thinking that something is definitely wrong with the ford rangers.

This is the second ranger i have owned that has had this problem. The gears in the rear differential are grinding and the pins are loose. I had shop take off rear diff cover and they verified metal shavings/shards in oil and loose differential pins. If the pins/gears lock up the rear wheels could lock up and cause wreck. There is a recall for the this issue for manual transmission model rangers but not auto transmission models. Look at carcomplaints.com and you will see others who have same issue with auto trans models (i am sure other sources have same complaints). There was a recall on 2002 ford ranger fx2 axle but only for manual transmission when research shows it does it on automatic ones to. Looked up recall documents and symptoms and everything was the exact same! i do have recall number 02s32. Had to be towed home...

I, among others own a ford ranger xlt 4.0 liter. I recently replaced my battery and lost my four wheel drive. After some involved research, i discovered that this is a recurring problem with fellow 2001, 2002 rangers. Ford's refusal to claim responsibility for this engineering flaw is unsafe, unfair, and unacceptable. Ford is making a fortune from this unfortunate situation and it needs to be addressed. This is criminal!

2002 ford ranger, automatic, extended cab. Slowing down to pull into parking spot and rear tires lock up, sending truck into skid. Once stopped, cannot move truck, even in neutral.

At 55 to 60 mph vehicle jerks and lunges. Took vehicle to dealer, and they stated this was normal. Consumer believes that the vehicle is defective.

Transmission will jump gears while in park and surge forward with no warning. Cause unknown. Dealer notified.

02 ranger 4x4.ford is using jucky valve body on there auto transmission!!!this problem make the transmission slip & slow shift.on the ranger station this is the biggest problem on ranger& a big one on explorer.

Consumer states that vehicle was on a slight incline, lifter feet off of brake, vehicle drifted backward, with vehicle in drive gear. Contacted dealer.ts

A grinding noise would come fromtransmission when gear changes from 1st to 2nd, and severe vibration would occur when driving 65 -70 mph.vehicle been todealer on several occasions, and no correction could be found at this time. Feel free to provide any further information.

It shifts the first gear extremely hard, once this happens, the overdrive light blinks..after doing some research i understand this a common problem with this year ford ranger

Replacement of transmission in a 2002 ford edge ranger. This transmission went bad with no indication of a problem until the day of failure. The vehicle had 51000 miles on it at the time of failure and the truck was maintained according to manufacturers suggested maintenance. According to the dealer where the repair/ replacement was made, the torque converter had been seizing for some time throwing shrapnel into the transmission and the entire unit needed replacing.

I have a 2002 ford ranger, shortly after i purchased it the air bag light started flashing and then the o/d light started flashing and the transmission started shifting really hard into second gear.i took it to the dealership and they said the transmission needed replaced and the airbag switch was bad..from what i have read this has been an ongoing problem with this type of transmission since it came out.it is a sealed transmission, in that, the fluid cant be checked.it's very poorly designed and ford doesn't want to do a recall even they are aware of the problem....

Rough or delayed shift 2nd to 3rd, 3rd to 4th. Been to dealer and charged 800.00 for updated valve body. No better.independent shop showed me a seal that fails on many rangers causing same problem. Vibration at 65-70 and grinding sound when accelerating hard from stop.

Brake and rotor problems on ford ranger.rotors had to be turned and front tires had to be replaced at 12000 miles because the rotors became warped and vehicle shook violently.same condition is occurring again at 35000 miles and dealer refuses to fix under warranty.transmission has also been overhauled twice due to malfunction.

My ford 2002 ranger edge pick ups automatic transmission fails to shift gears under acceleration such as taking off from a light or merging on into traffic. The transmission will shift from one gear than not go into gear leaving vehicle on of gear and without forward motion. I have had problems getting across interceptions and onto the highway.have to remove foot from accelerator for several seconds for transmission to find a gear to shift into. Ford motor company has some service bulletins regarding shifting issues but fall way short of correcting this safety issue.this has and is an on going issue since the vehicle was new.

Transmission in 2002 ford ranger is a piece of junk,my transmission has done it all, failed completly with only 12,000 miles, then the dealer gets it and the parts changers, not mechanics don't change enough parts(left torque converter full of garbage) i was a ford man for years now i will never ever buy another piece of ford junk!!!!!

2002 ford ranger o\d light flashes and transmission shifts hard and inconsistently.

Transmission shift problems on 2002 ford ranger.delayed shifts; rough shifts; overdrive light blinks indicating transmission fault; servo cover blown off allowing transmission fluid loss - inoperative vehicle.

The transmission disengaged while driving. Checked the transmission fluid level, and noticed that it was very low. I brought the fluid level to normal levels, and noticed that it leaks transmission fluid very badly.

Truck still not shifting properly after complete overhaul by ford on 5/22/04 ( complaint odi no. 10215891). Ford service department road test truck and verified problem. Called hotline (5lsb2012) r&r to overhaul, found sticking valve in main control(7a100), resealed trans.,replaced main control and torque converter, flushed cooler lines. But i returned the truck complaining that there was a grinding wining noise and still not shifting right.service manager road tested and said there was nothing wrong.work was performed at 60,206 miles and now at 90,125 miles i can't drive the truck because the transmission s broken again. The problem is he transmission was never fixed properly at the first over haul or the second time it was overhauled by ford. Now i have a truck with a transmission overhauled twice by fore and needs overhauled again. Now ford informed me that the warranty is out and they can not help me.

The contact owns a 2002 ford ranger. On several occasions, while making a turn, the vehicle stalled. The contact stated that the vehicle also lost power steering functionality and braking ability. Using an obd diagnostic tool, the contact was unable to retrieve a fault code. The contact stated that the vehicle was taken to allan vigil ford of fayetteville, inc (located at 275 glynn st n, fayetteville, ga 30214, (770) 461-1151) where it was diagnosed that the pcm needed to be flashed. The vehicle was serviced, but the failure recurred. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 25,000.

Car would not shift into overdrive.gear indicator stuck in drive, even if vehicle is in parked.preliminary ford inspection revealed 3d gear failure.

Vehicle locked up in secondand third gears. This caused the rear brakes to lock up. As a result, driver lost control and hit a fence.

Auto transmission on 2002 ford ranger edge with 43000 miles failed due to torque converter failure.vehicle not used for towing or hauling.required complete overhaul of transmission.

Correction to my original copmplaint my 2002 ranger rear tires got stuck in a lil snow on the street and as they hit pavment while moving foward i heard a pop from the rear then heard a few more while turning corners and had a rear end lock up. Took to dealer on flat bed and they told me that my rear differential carrier had snapped (rear axle housing) and they will not fix it. Rear axle housings do not break like this and there was a recall on the 2002 fx4 manual trans rangers for this same reason and feel the autos need to be recalled before someone gets killed or hurt. Consequence is rear end lockup.

While driving vehicle got stuck in the snow. Consumer was able to get out of the snow when all of a sudden a loud pop noise was heard from the rear, causing the vehicle not to move. Took vehicle to thedealer for check up, and results showed that the rear axle needed to be replaced.

A loud knocking and grinding noise was head coming from the front of the vehicle.consumer took vehicle to the dealer for inspection, and mechanic informed determined thatfront driver's side and passenger's side axles/tires, and other parts needed to be replaced.consumer informed the mechanic that problem recurred.

The clutch failed with less than 100 miles, would not disengage.towed to dealer. *yd

I have a 2002 ford ranger that when i got the truck it had to have the slave cylinder for the clutch replaced which the dealer did, and the truck only had 18,000 miles, but then again before my extended warranty ran out, it went out again at about 52000 miles, and now it has happened again, at 66,000 miles, the slave cylinder again for the clutch, and i am not new to driving manual transmissions, i am 47 and learned to drive on a manual transmission when 16, it also upsets me that ford said my extended warranty for the second repair did not cover the clutch slave cylinder, and i do not believe a vehicle should require this part to be replaced approximately every twenty or thirty thousand miles.i also believe since i purchased a manual with an extended warranty it should have been covered, my son also has a 2000 ford ranger and he recently had the same problem and we both have the v6 with 5 speed manual transmission.

Dealer presented vehicle as repaired 12-22-1 (replaced slave cylinder for clutch). Was still not disengaging. Still at willey ford.

I took my 1 year and 2 month old ranger to the dealership to correct a problem i had been having with it not going into gear.the condescending man at the dealership told me after a 5 minute look at my truck that i needed to have my clutch replaced, and that it was out of warranty by 2 months.in calling around to get prices on the replacement of the clutch, i was almost unanimously told that it was next to impossible to have a clutch go out in a vehicle in that short of a time period, when it has not been abused, which mine has not.in researching this, i have found that a lot of people have had similar problems with the clutch on the 2002 ford ranger 3.0.

Clutch slave cylinder failed on a 16 month old ford ranger 5 speed, 4 cylinder.

*nlm

The right rear axle flange separated from the axle, nearly causing an accident, starting a grease fire in the axle housing, and damaged therear body panel on the right side.

At approx. 26,500 miles vehicle made popping/clunk sound accompanied by a jerking movement when turning.especially slow turns after making a stop.sound came from rear end.1 or both rear tires would bind in slow corners and skid.ford dealer confirmed broken gears in differential.2002 ranger ext. Cab with manual trans, 4 cyl, 2wd.$1,650 to repair.ford will not assist in paying for any part of this.evidently ford is satisfied with their bread and butter trucks failing so quickly.this is how they lose a customer for life, by not standing behind their vehicles.too many reports of this failure for it not to be taken care of by ford.very angry, ford, your huge losses are well deserved.

Nhtsa campaign 02v035000; ford issued an rear axle differential case recall. This vehicle is not included in the recall, but has a bent axle in which it could break. The vin is outside the remedy scope.

The differential housing leaked fluid. A recall was issued, however this vehicle was not included in the recall due to vin.

The contact owns a 2002 ford ranger.while driving 2 mph, the contact heard a loud grinding and clunking noise.he also noticed fluid leaking from the rear differential unit.the dealer stated that there was a fracture in the rear differential case.the dealer and manufacturer stated that his vin was not included in nhtsa campaign id number 02v035000 (power train: driveline: differential unit).the contact felt that his vehicle should be included in the recall.the failure mileage was 35,000 and current mileage was 80,000.

Dt*: the contact stated the rear axle differential was damaged and needed to be replaced.the service dealer determined the rear axle differential could be changed at a charge. The contact expressed concern that this was a defect.updated 11/30/2006 -while driving the rear of the truck shook profusely.an independent repair facility determined that the rear axles were cracked and the entire rear differential should be replaced.the consumer was informed of a recall related to this problem.the consumer contactedthe dealer who admitted there was a recall but stated that it had expired.the consumer contacted the manufacturer.the customer service rep explained that the recall hadn't expired it just didn't exist for the consumer's ranger.the service rep when on to tell the consumer that the recall was fir 2002 ranger 4x4 with manual transmission.the consumer's vehicle has an automatic transmission.

The contact owns a 2002 ford ranger. While driving approximately 35 mph on an icy road, the vehicle skidded, followed by a loud sound of spinning tires. Suddenly, the vehicle began to lunge forward. The contact was able to gain control and continue driving to her destination. After the vehicle was parked for six hours and restarted, there was no response when pressure was applied to the accelerator pedal because the wheels locked.a mechanic inspected the vehicle and unlocked the wheels. The brakes would not function effectively after the wheels were unlocked. Also, the four wheel drive would not operate upon engagement. The vehicle had not been repaired. The failure was related to a recall defect under nhtsa campaign id number 02v035000 (power train: driveline: differential unit). The recall pertained to manual transmissions which resulted to the vehicle not being included. The failure mileage was 73,000. The vin was unavailable.

1) events leading up to the failure: normal everyday mode of transportation via highway and surface streets.2)failure and consequences: the rear limited slip differential unit of my 2002 ford ranger fx4 automatic transmission vehicle broke causing the truck to stop abruptly nearly causing an accident.the rear limited slip differential unit exploded causing the gears to break and stop the vehicle from driving.i had contacted the manufacturer (torsen) of the differential unit and stated the unit i had was recalled according to the serial number.ford motor company negelantly did not recall all vehicles with the recalled differential units.3) the truck's rear differential unit and gear was replaced with oem ring and pinion gears, bearings and similar type limited slip differential unit from a different manufacturer (detroit truetrac) from which was orginally installed in the vehicle. Cost $1,400.00.

2002 ford ranger fx4- automatic transmission.vehicle had approx. 65k miles at the time of incident.drove vehicle normally, started noticing "clunking" sound coming from the rear.mechanic diagnosed as a cracked rear differential unit that was very close to causing axle to lock up.parts replaced by my mechanic at the cost of approx. $1500.sounds very similar to recall #02v035000 concerning manual transmission version.

Recall 02v035000; while driving the vehicleconsumer noticed a low hum coming from the back of the vehicle. Hum starts to get louder. Tookvehicle to the dealer, dealer stated rear end was bad. Please provide any further information.

2002 ford ranger stalled. The drive shaft jerked and slammed when accelerating in drive or reverse.the drive shaft assembly was replaced but that did not solve the problem.

Slight jerking coming from drive train when lightly accelerating and braking. Dealer replaced driveshaft in aug. 2002, problem went away temporarily, came back and returned to dealer. Was told there is no repair available. Called ford motor to complain and got no satisfaction.

When pulling up to a stop truck rattles with an awkward sound.dealership has made several attempts to correct, but with no success.ford has sent out a tsb on this, but even that has not corrected the problem.a factory representative spoke with the owner and basically told him that the truck waslike that.the engine is 3.0 litre w/5 speed transmission, edge series model pickup.please describe details.

While shifting and decelerating the consumer heard a clunking noise.the dealer denied any problem with the vehicle.*nlm

(1) grinding noise coming from front transfer case on 4x4 drivetrain, noticeable at 30 to 40 mph..precent at all speeds more apparent at speeds described, at high speeds 40 to 80mph grinding noise masked by wind/road noise. Noise started at under 20000 miles on vehicle, vehicle currently has 27k miles and grinding/noise is more pronounced.(2) no apparent component failure yet, several ranger 4x4 owners have this problem.(member of a ranger forum of 1000+ members). Will it cause premature failure of front drive line components leading to crash and or death?(3) dealership is aware of the problem, only way to correct it is to use harder tires; dealer will not recommend goodyears which is what is installed by the factory.

The seat belt retractor on the drivers side will not retract the belt more than a few inches. The remainingbelt falls onto the door opening and gets pinched when the door is closed. This damages the belt.

The contact owns a 2002 ford ranger. The contact stated that the driver's side seatbelt would unlatch erroneously while driving and could not be properly latched after trying to secure it again. The vehicle had not been inspected by a dealer nor repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was approximately 50,000.

The contact owns a 2002 ford ranger.the contact stated that the vehicle was not equipped with the proper seat belt in order to safely secure a child safety seat.the child seat manufacturer noted in the warning section of the owners manual that the child safety seat can not be secure utilizing the door mounted seat belts. The manufacturer advised the contact that the anchor to accommodate the latch system could be retro fitted in order to properly secure the child safety seat into the vehicle.the vehicle was taken to the dealer.the technician was not able to locate the parts that would allow the latch system to be retro fitted into the vehicle.the contact had not installed the child safety seat in the vehicle.the failure and current mileage was 151,500.

Drivers seat belt releases on it's own while driving. Happens at least 5-6 times while driving. Can happen right after engaging or any time after engaging. Does not matter if driving on smooth or bumpy roads, it will pop off. It happens everytime i drive. Have almost been injured from having to stop fast and was not held in the seat because it came loose. Part is going to be replaced when i can get one.

The seat belt on the driver side does not lock, and as a result it's causing the airbag light to go off and it flashes code number 46 as for the seat belt tensioner.

2002 ford ranger, seat belt come undone while driving.every time i drive the car, it comes undone at leased 5 times a day while driving every daysince i bought the vehicle.went to ford and they wouldn't even look at it.just told me to buy a new one....which i couldn't afford, also the plastic handle on the tailgate breaks off every couple of years, and i have to replace it.

Dt*:the contact stated while driving 55mph without warning the driver side seat belt anchorage came loose from the vehicle floor.upon inspection the dealership determined the anchorage wire cable frayed.the seat belt anchorage needed to be replaced.

As i was driving on the interstate going about 60 mph, my seat belt (driver's side) came unbuckled. As i attempted to buckle it again, i was unable to get it to stay buckled.i contacted the local car dealer who asked me to bring the vehicle in for them to inspect. Upon inspection by thedealer where i bought the truck, i was informed of the need to have the seat belt connector unit replaced. This was done the next day, and i have retained the replaced part.

Passenger side seat beltdisconnectedwhile driving.consumertook the vehicle to the dealer for inspection, and mechanic replaced the seat belt assembly.

Driver side seat belt won't stay buckled.vehicle is out of warranty due to mileage.

Consumer states thatdriver's front safety belt latch plate does not lock into the buckle when attempting to secure.consumer does not have the protection of safety belt when driving.

Dt: contact states driver's side seat belt will not latch.this component is not covered under the warranty.the service dealer stated the buckle assembly needed to be replaced.

I was backing my 2002 ford rangerxlt into my driveway and when i stopped the driver side seat back gave way without warning and i slammed into the back of the cab. When i looked around the seat i saw two bolt heads ...they appeared to be sheared off. My seat back will not stay or latch any more.

Consumer complained that the front passenger seat rattled while driving at any speed, and when the seat was not being occupied. Vehicle had been to the dealer on three occasions. They replaced the seat tracks, but problem recurred.

We are original owners of a 2002 ford ranger xlt now with 57,000 highway miles, always garaged/washed/maintained, little driving in winter (mostly in summer), always ford maintained/serviced at same dealership, body/engine/transmission in great shape, will likely fail inspection this sping because frame and frame components are severely rusted out.- severe rust on the entire frame including both cross members (engine and transmission), arm bolt points and control arms.- frame also has severe rust down both sides to rear bumper, rear axle and differental, leaf springs and all mounts.- the passenger side stearing knuckle is delaminating.- all brake lines have failed while driving: first the rear brakes including all axle couplings and drum couplings; second the front brake lines failed at the disk brakes and rubber couplings.all brake tubes had to be replaced from the master cylinder to the wheels. -service manager is worried about front cross member failing under the engine, middle cross member failing under the transmission and the gas tank brackets/straps. - the frame and members and mounts must be replaced; the rest of the vehicle is mechanically sound.service manager said no repair was possible to frame rust is so badpictures can be provided and/or vehical inspected by nhtsa if desired.all brake lines and couplings performed around august 29, 2019.

When the dealership disconnected our speed control (recall) the abs light came on and stayed on which eventually led to failure of the rear brake system. They would lock up while going down the road. We had to have the rear brakes and wheels rebuilt and spent over $1,000 on repairs. When the abs light came on immediately after disconnection of the cruise control the dealership check it out and said it would be fine. I have a hard time believing that this vehicle just developed a sudden brake issue that just happened to co-inside with the disconnection of the cruise control. What is even harder to believe is that once it was fixed the brake light magically went off.

I've owned my 2002 ford ranger since new and have had all service performed by the dealer.the vehicle has 60,000 miles and was serviced under a contract purchased with the vehicle when new.issues with the brakes started within the first year of ownership and have steadily worsened since.the complaint has been submitted to various dealers at least ten times with no trouble found.one failure mode i have observed resulted in three very close calls where the brake pedal is firm, but the vehicle does not slow.pressing the brake harder does not increase braking effectiveness.in one instance, i was forced to drive off the road to avoid (killing) a pedestrian.a second failure mode is the opposite; a slight amount of pressure applied to the brake pedal results in the front brakes locking.a third failure mode is where braking results in a violent shimmy, which caused me to lose control on snowpack and slide off the road.none of these failure modes has been consistent, nor have they repeated at the dealership.i am very concerned for my safety and that of those around me.my research has revealed many folks with similar issues.

Consumer complained about a brake problem.the brakes on one side of the vehicle wore normally but the driver side front brake was completely destroyed.consumer purchased an extended warranty which was to cover the vehicle for up to 60,000 miles. Dealer will not honor the extendedwarranty.

On february 1, 2007, i was slowly following an suv in a crowded parking lot as we both looked for a parking spot. The suv stopped.i applied the brakes and then suddenly my 2002 ford ranger accelerated.the tires squealed as the brakes fought the acceleration.i hit the suv from behind.the suv pulled forward and the ranger continued to accelerate an hit the suv again. I shut off the engine. The ranger was towed to a body shop.when the body work is complete i will have the ranger towed to a ford dealer to address the sudden, unintended acceleration problem.

Sudden stop with brand new vehicle equipped with abs, brakes immediately locked and vehicle slid sideways.

Driving a 2002 ford ranger with 19,831 miles, a loud noise in the back of the truck occurred, braking was impaired, the brake petal was going up and down. I was able to bring the vehicle to a stop avoiding an accident.on december 2, 2003, joe taylor ford in seneca, pa , "verified concern found rear wheel cylinders froze, springs rusted, drums warped and adjusters frozen replaced all components."in addition there was brake shoe failure.staff at the dealership noted this was typical of 2002 rangers and stated we were in serious danger in driving the truck."this is a serious safety hazard and one that has been occurring frequently in rangers and f-150's."(per staff)in addition it relates to nhtsa item 620159 and 10002516.the premature failure of the drive shafts (which i have had replaced for loud noises, is probably being caused by rear brakes that are constantly on.i have also had this truck back to the dealership three times for a slipping transmission.the ranger brake lining was inspected and it came off in chunks and the drums were warped due to heat. This ranger is under its original 36,000 mile guarantee and i still had to pay for part of the repairs.this truck has a brake safety problem.our truck has never been in the water and has always been garage kept.brake cylinders and adjusters do not freeze in 19,000 miles unless there is a serious quality problem.we have dealer documentation to show what work was performed and the $58.30 paid for brake shoes on this one year old truck.we tried to resolve this issue with three managers and they all said that is the way it is.i am very concerned for the safety of others with drive shaft problems.please have their rear brakes inspected as soon as possible.thank you.

While driving up a hillvehiclesuddenly accelerated backward. The driver applied the brakes, and brakepedal went down to floor.this caused the vehicle to hit a tree.consumer had the vehicle towed the mechanic, who could not duplicate the problem.

Received a recall on my speed control.made a appointment at dealership to replace defective part and they disconnected my speed control, but ran out of parts. The dealership and ford motor company have been contacted about the availability of this part[scds] and they tell me january or february 2008. I have been without speed control for over 4 months. As soon as they disconnected my speed control my anti-lock light on dash has been coming on occasionally. The dealership has been informed of this. I am concerned that this could affect my ability to stop or avoid a collision.

I have a 2002 ford ranger, i have took it in 4 times for service on the brakes.they tell me now they find nothing wrong, but the shaking stering wheel continues. Long lewis ford of muscle shoals,al is the dealer.

After complaints to the ford dealerabout shaking in the front brakes that they could not find, i took my 2002 ford ranger with 27,000 miles on it to my local mechanic who is a napa service center.the shaking became very bad and the mechanic would fit me in the next day to resuface the rotors.they found the silver metal on the rotors was flacking off and they were warped to the point that they could not be turned and were not usable any more.when i got to the garage at 4:30 pm all i could do was have them put on new rotors so i could have transportation to work the next morning at 6:00 am.when i called the dealer the next morning, they said they would not do anything because it was not done at the ford dealer.i did not ask for payment for the work, just for coverge of the defective rotors.

After 25000 miles, the steering wheel would shake violently when braking at highway speeds. Took the vehicle to the dealer. The dealer found that the rotors were warped. The dealer asked if i did a lot of stop and go driving. I explained that i drive 4 miles to the freeway, 75 miles on the freeway at 4:30am, barely any traffic, and then 2 miles to the building in which i work. So no, i do not drive in stop and go traffic.the dealer did not want to cover the rotors under the 3/36 warranty, he said that the brakes were not covered. I explained that i understand that brake pads were not covered, but that the brake rotors are not a consumable items. After 3 days of arguing with the dealer, they finally replaced the rotors under warranty.25000 miles later, i have the same problem. They are replacing these rotors for free.someone should look the rotors on the 2002 ford ranger xlt extended cab 4 dr.

I have a 2002 ford ranger xlt ext. Cab and the brakes started some squealing around 23,000 miles. Well, i took the truck back to the dealer and they had to resurface the front rotors and rear drums. The dealer i think did a great job, it took them 4-5 hours, although they did it at their cost. The pads they said were ok. I talked to ford already (due to a survey i filled out), and they said they would pass it on to their engineers.what gets me is i also own another ford and thebrakes have never been touched at 68,500 miles!now i have got almost 25,000 miles on the truck and when they heat up and/or you apply them they are barly squelling again. So i guess i will have to either take it back to ford or get another truck brand. It seems ford knows something because go look at new ford ranger's at a dealership and the brakes are bigger & better!

Vehicle locked up in secondand third gears. This caused the rear brakes to lock up. As a result, driver lost control and hit a fence.

I took my 2002 ford rangertruck in for inspection and i was told my truck was uninspectable because my frame, crossmember, front aarms are rusted thin. It only has 80 some k on it i only have it for 2yearsi don't drive very far i bought it with 74k.

The steering mechanism wouldlock up, unable to start vehicle. Between putting it between park and drive it would start by shifting it. Local ford dealers would state nothing was wrong with it. Now, i need to replace the battery every three months.now it won't even start. Starter is okay because when i turn it over it clicks.it's not the fx package, a 2002 ford ranger.

The steering wheel contained an excessive amount of play.. The steering failed on three occasions. The power steering pump was replaced.ph. The head light bulb was replaced, and the door latches were lubricated.

The contact owns a 2002 ford ranger. The contact stated that the driver was traveling 30 mph when the vehicle began to steer veer to the left. The driver crashed into a tree. The driver was killed from the impact and sustained severe injuries. The air bag did deploy. The fatal injuries to the driver were caused by the impact from the air bag. A police report was filed of the incident. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 150,000. Updated 03/04/15*ljthe consumer stated the airbag exploded with great force. The autopsy says he died of multiple blunt trauma injuries to the chest and head. Updated 10/15/2015

Vehicle failed to start due to anti-theft system locking mode kicking in.vehicle showed no signs of having power, and wouldn'tstart until the following day. Dealer stated that ford engineers were looking into the problem. Please provide more information.

While driving at 40 mph vehicle crashed into a pole head on. Upon impact, driver's head hit the windshield. This resulted in a concussion. Driverhad been in and out of the hospital for severe headaches.manufacturer was providing no assistance. Vehicle is currently parked inconsumer'sdriveway.

Vehicle was going 40-45mph and upon impact, passenger's front tire fell due tocarter pin possibly not being attached.bracket where the carter pin was held didn't show any indentations or fragment pieces ofpin being in tack.dealer was notified, and stated it was very unusal for this type of impact. *jg

This truck is rusting from front to back.the main frame and all connecting parts. I have had to replace numerous metal parts. There has to be some kind of defect either in the metal or this truck was never undercoated. It has 84000 miles and i have been replacing parts since 75000 miles.

The contact owns a 2002 ford ranger. The contact noticed that the right rear passenger frame had rusted. Both the dealer and manufacturer were notified who informed the contact that there were no related recalls and did not provide any other assistance. The vehicle had not been diagnosed or repaired. The current and failure mileages were 92,000.

Bracket for spare tire rotted, tire dropped off, no car in back of me, didn't know what happen at the time, that happened 6 month after i bought it, the other day the frame cracked in half. Car dealer ship sold truck to me roughly 15 month agotruck is totaled. Insurance adjuster said whole frame and under carriage is rotted? help. Exterior of truck looks brand new? help

I recently check the underside of the vehicle and found out a missing sparetire and also a very loose rear bumper and the cause of it is rust, very bad rusting on the frame, mostly on the rear end.

Rear spring hangers rotted and failed andboth sides of frame rusted bad..spare tire holder rusted rotted and broke letting spare tire and rear bumper to drop down. I caught it before it made it to the road.we were on the road when the right hand side came down.left side happened a year before the right side[estimate].

At the annual safety inspection it was determined that the rear frame has been perforated by rust. I was informed that this is a common problem due to how the frame is shaped where the spare tire attaches. An otherwise mechanically sound and solid vehicle is no longer driveable.

I noticed my vehicle had a slight sag to it so i took it in to an independent shop, the mechanic gave me horrifying news, stating my vehicle was unsafe to drive due to the frame being excessive rotted out, he showed my where the spare tire was being held on the rust had eaten away the support and said i was luck not to lose the spare on the highway. Also the gas tank supports were completely gone. The truck has 67k miles. The outside looks beautiful and clean you would never tell by looking at the truck that the undercarriage was rotted. I find it absurd that a truck well taken care has turned to this... The mechanic said the only way to fix this is to replace the frame, which is very expensive, so i'm left with a unsafe pile of rusted metal.

The truck frame has multiple spots of severe rust that caused it to snap in 2 making the truck unsafe to drive. One of the areas is next to the gas tank (where it snapped) and the rust does not affect any other spot around the frame in this area. I was making a wide right hand turn on a highway on ramp and it snapped.

Brought truck into service centerfor noise in front.raised truck to inspect---- complete undercariage rusted beyond belief, front to rear bolts, nuts, brackets, frame, shocks, etc.main concern is frame, brake lines --- had to have rear leaf spring support and bracket replaced because it was ready to break. Had shocks replaced because they looked like they could bust at any time. This is a truck with less than 32,000 miles --- body still looks great but underneath is questionable is there a recall or something i can fall back on ????

Rear shake bracket rusted off

The contact owns a 2002 ford ranger. The contact stated that while stationary during an oil change, the vehicle's frame bedding was discovered to be severely corroded. Underneath the vehicle, there was a noise coming from underneath the vehicle and the frame encountered the bedding causing the failure to progress. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 123,546.

Front frame spring pockets are cracked.main frame near transmission mount bracket cracking, back rear frame sparetiremount gone..matel missing no back bummer.both main frame under cab are rusted starting to crumble .

The contact owns a 2002 ford ranger. The contact stated that the vehicle had not passed inspection due to rusting on the axle and the subframe on the front driver side. The contact stated that the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who stated that the front frame was unable to be repaired. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 56,000. The vin was not available.

The frame has completely rusted out. The spare tire rusted off while driving.

Truck exhibited a 'clunk' noise from left rear when traversing a bump in the road.i took it to the dealership where i bought it new and have had all maintenance and repair work done.service manager said no repair was possible'frame rust was so bad a new leaf spring, etc. Could not be attached and it was unsafe to drive.see attached invoice.i had the truck towed to my home and it has not been driven since.(date of occurrence is approximate.it became worse as time went on and occurs at any speed.)

The contact owns a 2002 ford ranger. The contact stated that while driving 55 mph, the spare tire holder fractured, causing the tire to detach from the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where they stated that the spare tire bed was corroded. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 130,000.

Excessive rust underneath.leaf spring hangers failed at 11 years/120k miles.spare tire winch separated from truck at 14 years/155k miles..an exhaust mount has rusted away leaving the exhaust system marginally supported- uncertain of when this happened.logging this complaint due to the gas tank strap failure.one gas tank strap separated from underneath the truck bed approximately one month ago - age 14.5 years, ~160k miles.with the spare tire, i noticed it hanging low (3 of 4 fasteners had pulled away from their mounts), and with little effort, was able to have it fall off.had the remaining fastener failed on the highway, obviously bad things could have happened.with the gas tank strap, luckily it separated from underneath the bed rather than from the frame, and i could hear it rubbing against the drive shaft.the other strap was able to carry the entire weight until i was able to secure the gas tank.

Frame has extensive rot resulting in an unstable handling feel to the truck while driving. Also the leaf spring mounts are rusted through and about to fall apart, i feel the truck is no longer safe to drive.

I bought this truck from a dealership in jan 2010. Truck was in good shape, had frame check out before i bought it and looked very good. Truck had only 48000 miles on it. In jan of 2015 the truck bed sat a little crooked check frame and seen a crack on frame 3' long by front shackle. At that time truck only has 94000 miles on it. Took bed off and found more areas that would need adressing soon. I tried to keep truck under side clean during the winter, i guess the stuff the state uses on the road was to much for the truck.

Spare tire mount fell off truck going 50 mph. Could have killed some one. Mounts were totally rusted off. Since then have had to weld frame several times to pass inspection. Frame is not going to pass again this year on a truck with great engine, tires, brakes, etc. Land fill here we come. Something was very wrong with the steel used in this frame. There is nothing left.

The contact owns a 2002 ford ranger. The contact stated that while approaching a stop light, he erroneously depressed both the brake pedal and the accelerator pedal and proceeded through the light. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer for inspection. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 20,000. The vin was not available.

Truck failed nh safety inspection 4/10/2021 due to badly rusted frame.

Frame is rusting away. Front coil spring pockets cracking.frame near front control arms are rusted, and cracking.back frame spear tire bracket are gone.frame rusted backleaf spring shackelsno matel frame for back bumper mount.

Rear leaf shackles replaced, rotted from frame, last aug 2014 to pass inspection.this winter 2014-2015, the spare tire carrier frame rotted and fell from the vehicle, including the spare tire.now, upon inspection of the bed appearing crooked, the drivers side frame in front of the drivers side front leaf spring mount is totally rotted.this has caused the gas tank mounts to the frame to break.it has also caused the bed to twist and the entire rear end of this vehicle is now only supported by the passenger side frame.

While driving 25 mph the fiber glass cap that covers the pick up bed flipped up in the front, causing the hydraulic pistons to break free and fling into the road.this incident caused the cover to split straight down the middle. Dealer and the manufacturer had been notified of the problem.

The contact owns a 2002 ford ranger.when loading items into the vehicle, the contact noticed that both tailgate cables failed and caused the tailgate to slam down.the tailgate struck the bumper and was damaged.the contact believed that the failure could cause serious injury.she spoke with the ford dealer and manufacturer and they both declined to assist.the purchase date was unknown.the current and failure mileages were 86,000.

While loading a generator onto the flat bed of a pick up truck with the tailgate down both of the support cablesbroke and caused the tailgate to falldown. Both support cables showed signs of corrosion. No injury, except minor burns onconsumer's arm and legs.dealer and manufacturer were notified. Both informed the consumer that problem was not covered under a recall.

The contact owns a 2002 ford ranger. The contact stated that while traveling approximately 30 mph over a road bump, the rear frame became detached along with the cross member, causing the spare tire to fracture. The contact inspected the vehicle and noticed that the two cross members, the frame bedding and the rear frame was rusted and corroded. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 93,000.

My son was traveling on a 4 lane state hwy at about 65 mph in the outside lane when the driver's side back tire flew off.he said all he remembers was that the trucks rear dropped on that side, spinning the truck to face the opposite direction, and causing it to rollover numerous times until it landed in the ditch on the opposite side of the hwy. Not to mention it had to go up and embankment to get there.he could have been killed or seriously injured.dps , wrecker driver, my husband and my son could not find the tire, which still has the brake drum on it.upon inspection it was noted that left rear axle broke behind the flange where the lug nuts go.i am told this must be a defect because you rarely hear this happening.dps and wrecker driver stated that vehicle had good tires and looked as though it had been well taken care of.it is a 2002 ford ranger edge.

The contact owns a 2002 ford ranger. While driving approximately 25 mph on normal road conditions, there was a loud noise coming from the exterior of the vehicle. Suddenly, the spare tire well detached from its frame and onto the road. A replacement spare tire well was installed at a local repair shop. The vehicle was later taken to an authorized dealer who stated that the frame exhibited severe rust and corrosion. Thus causing defects in the fuel tank strap and transmission cross beam. The brake line and shackles were also damaged. The vehicle was not repaired when the complaint was filed. The failure mileage was 70,000 and the current mileage was unknown.

The contact owns a 2002 ford ranger. While performing maintenance on the vehicle, the contact noticed the frame was rusting. Over the course of a few years, the rusting had progressed and worsened. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer but the failure was not diagnosed and the vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 30,000 and the current mileage was 81,000. I purchased this truck 1 yr ago . I took it in for inspection and found that it had severe rust problems . The shackles for the leaf spring had completelyrotted away causing the spring to rest upon the box. The restraintfor the gas tank was rotted to the point that tank was about to fall off.there was severe rusting of the frame , especially in the rear .obviously, the truck failed inspection.

Frame is rusted and rotting away, bought it from dealer 1/21/2015. Found out truck was in bad shape 1/23/2015 after getting oil change from local shop.

My frame is completely rusted despite the body, engine and interior being in good shape. My spare tire mount rotted and the spare fell off. One of the crossmembers that held the evap canister completely broke off as i was driving staying attached only by the electrical connector. The frame on the passenger side completely severed just forward of the axle. The leaf spring is the only thing holding it together and those shackles look like they're ready to go. Ford sucks!

I took my 2002 ford rangertruck in for inspection and i was told my truck was uninspectable because my frame, crossmember, front aarms are rusted thin. It only has 80 some k on it i only have it for 2yearsi don't drive very far i bought it with 74k.

A loud thunk, rear driver's side dropped, immediate stop at mechanic's shop, extensive framerust andriveted construction of shackle bracket hangers and shackle bracket had caused the shackle bracket hanger to break from the frame. The spring was shoved up against the truck's bed. At highway speed this could have been deadly.mechanic said both shackle bracket hangers and shackle brackets would need replacement with probably new metal welded to the frame to ensure the new shackle bracket hangers would be stable.also, mechanic stated the frame was rusted to a greater degree than usual even for new england.with 107000 miles, this should be unacceptable for us.there are accidents and deaths waiting to happen.there has to be something done.more to come once i go to the welding shop today (8/1/2013).read online ranger forums to see how prevalent this frame rot issue is.

Yesterday i had something go wrong with my ford ranger and i needed to have it towed home. This problem will be the end of my wonderful trucks life because the inspection is also due and i have been told that due to extensive rust and a cracked rear frame, my truck will never be able to pass inspection. The body, interior and engine are all in great shape. The spare tire support is almost completely eaten away and the gas tank supports rotted away years ago. My mechanic had to rig a wire hanger for the gas tank. While my truck was on the flat bed, the mechanic mentioned that rangers are know for the frames being eaten away. I have been doing research and understand now how common this problem is. Why has ford not recalled this poorly made frame just like toyota did? is it because not enough people have died from it???

Rear crossmember rotted off charcole canister and spare tire fell off while driving why shouldn't ford be responsible when goverment makes toyota responsible for there frames.

When pulling into a driveway, i heard a loud crack from the rear of the truck.after inspection, the rear frame had rusted to the point where the leaf spring mount detached from the frame.if this would have happened while hauling a load, or pulling a trailer at highway speeds, it could have led to a crash.

Vehicle has a slight vibration at 65 mph that increases in severity as speed increases. At 85 mph it has a very pronounced vibration that must be considered dangerous. Vehicle was returned to dealer four times. The dealer essentially told customer that ford would not warranty a vehicle over the legal speed limit. This was the final answer after several attempts were made to convince the customer of other causes, most of which were essentially ridiculous. (the customer was in the auto repair business for 17 years.) the customer took the technician for a test drive to demonstrate the severe vibration. The technician proposed the possibility of a defective rear drive line. The technician's supervisor then drove the vehicle himself then stated the vehicle definitely had a pronounced vibration, but ford would not warranty the problem. Since the vibration was discovered while passing an obviously intoxicated driver (for safety reasons), the customer definitely considers this a safety hazard. After viewing several other complaints at the nhtsa site, it is all to obvious that this answer/refusal is becoming a very common practice among ford dealers.*ph*nlm**dimsii ivoq entry posted after 12/12/02 cut over to artemis**769763

I was driving on the highway and the spare tire fell off and was dragging under the truck. Looking under the truck i noticed lots of rot? this truck is in great condition not a spot of rust on the body but the frame is a rotted mess. This should not be happening to a ten year old truck. P.s if the tire ever broke away from the truck completely it could have caused an accident.

Rear bumper and spare tire holder rotted off .. Rear shackles on both sides.. Gas tank straps and crossmember that holds it up... Now the frame has rotted in half right in middle of truck... Spare tire fell off while driving

Per the advice of my mechanic, while repairing my rear brake seals, they suggested i have the leaf spring shackles, hangers & bolts replaced before i have a serious problem.i had the work done and i did not re-attach the spare tire.its in the cab.

I bought my ranger new, it currently has 232,000 miles.frame rust is so bad it is unsafe to drive.rear spring shackle mounts rusted away, bed is resting on springs.rust rains from underneath when hood is allowed to close.brake line mounts are nearly gone, as is gas tank straps.i have never seen frame rot this bad, even in northern states where road salt is used.

Rear tire fell out onto road, rottedcarrier , frame rotted at axle, cracked in half while driving on highway, rear end shifted, can know longer drivevehiclesafely, had to buy new truck days later! body in good shape, frame totally rotted! so many other complaints about same thing on googlesearch.toyotatoyota had same thing, we called all their trucks and replaced all truck f we called all their trucks and replaced all truck frames frames, still to this day ford has not recognized a major problem with their frames!!!these vehicles are a major safety hazard on the road and a recall needs to happen !!

Took vehicle to mechanic because of tapping noise coming from front end. Mechanic replaced bushings and support rods on both sides but the tapping noise persisted. After returning to the repair shop, the mechanic pointed out that the boots on all upper and lower ball joints had rotted out and apparently led to premature failure of the ball joints. Since the vehicle was purchased new, kept in a garage and has had minimal use of only 10,000 miles over eleven years, the mechanic said he had no other explanation as to why they need replacement after such low mileage. I've already spent $242 for the bushings and rods. Now, it sounds like it's going to cost another $1000 to replace the faulty ball joints.

Rear shake bracket rusted off

Was pulling into friends driveway when i heard a cracking noise when i checked the left rear spring hanger pulled out of the rusted frame. I pulled off the bed of the truck and found several areas which were severely rusted including the spare tire carrier and the straps which hold up the gas tank. I am the original owner of the vehicle and have lived in pennsylvania the whole time.

Ford sucks!

I purchased this truck 1 yr ago . I took it in for inspection and found that it had severe rust problems . The shackles for the leaf spring had completelyrotted away causing the spring to rest upon the box. The restraintfor the gas tank was rotted to the point that tank was about to fall off.there was severe rusting of the frame , especially in the rear .obviously, the truck failed inspection.

The contact owns a 2002 ford ranger. The contact stated while changing fluids, he discovered a broken shock on the rear axle. Upon further inspection, he noticed the front shock tower mounts and the frame were fractured. The vehicle was taken to a private mechanic where the failure was confirmed. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was contacted about the failure. The failure mileage was 171,000.

Front left wheel bearing is going out with just 77,000 miles on the vehicle.

Bracket for spare tire rotted, tire dropped off, no car in back of me, didn't know what happen at the time, that happened 6 month after i bought it, the other day the frame cracked in half. Car dealer ship sold truck to me roughly 15 month agotruck is totaled. Insurance adjuster said whole frame and under carriage is rotted? help. Exterior of truck looks brand new? help

The contact owns a 2002 ford ranger.while driving at low speeds around 20 mph there was a popping noise in the front of the vehicle. The noise was also heard while making left and right turns. The dealer stated that the lower ball joints had excessive pry and could possibly separate. The lower ball joints were replaced at the owners expense. There have been no failures since the vehicle was repaired. The failure mileage was 37000 and the current mileage was 44000.

Upper ball joints inadequately lubricated leading to premature failure (3 in 50,000 miles).

While driving at 35 - 40 mph right rear end completely separated and fell off the truck.when this occurred driver lost control of the truck, but didn't have an accident.dealership indicated that a pin inside the rear axle assembly sheared off.please provide details

Problems with tire equipment on 2002 ford ranger.*mrtransferred to ovsc.

I recently check the underside of the vehicle and found out a missing sparetire and also a very loose rear bumper and the cause of it is rust, very bad rusting on the frame, mostly on the rear end.

The truck came with a 15" inch spare tire. Thge dealer indicated that when this tire iss used on the truck it causes the rear end and the trainee to bind and go out because the truck leans. The other tires on the truck are 16" inches.

All four of the vehicle tires (original equipment) are showing sign of premature wear with less then 30,000 miles. Please provide the tire information (make, model, tire size and the dot numbers). The dealer was notified.

*nlm

R door power window inop fixed prolemnoticed paint peeling on hood edge took in for repairs they repainted only around the edges, picked up truck today needs to go back so they can fix tape line on edge of hood and found another chip where they just painted

The radiator on my 2002 ford ranger had to be replaced on march 5, 2004.on march 17, 2004 a 30" x 7" x 6" plastic deflector located behind the radiator dropped and caught a ridge on a snow covered road sending the truck into a snow covered embankment. When i went to whaling city ford and told them what happened and said they must not have put the deflector back on properly they said the deflector must have come off as a result of striking the embankment.they claim that marks on the deflector show it got damaged at that time.however, other than what happened to the end that dropped to the roadway, the marks on the deflector are from having to twist and turn the deflector to break it off from the driver side of the truck since the truck could not be driven with the deflector hanging half way off and scraping along the road surface.the radiator did not get damaged and the radiator is forward of the deflector.the impact with the embankment was so slight that the air bag failed to deploy and that would not have knocked a properly secured part off the truck.there was no damage to anything other than the bumper from the impact with the embankment.furthermore, the side of the deflector that dropped had a plastic pin (meant to hold the deflector in place) still in the middle of three holes while the other two holes appear to have had nothing in them.we filed a complaint on ford's web site on 12 apr 04 and they have, at this writing, refused to help.they have also refused to answer any questions we submitted by e-mail.we have the failed part and are willing to show it to anyone who is interested.

The rear strap that holds the fuel tank is hanging down. On closer inspection, the mount that is connected/part of the frame has completely corroded and is now missing. I only noticed the problem when the "check fuel cap" and i started to try and locate the problem.

Frame is rusted out. Just noticed during servicing vehicle.

While the consumer was driving intense heat comes from the dashboard. Took the vehicle to the dealer and the dealer unable to remedy the problem.

Have tried since the vehicle was new, to get out what appeared to be water spots.took it to the dealer, they "acid washed" it two times.it looked better, but was still spotted, and now scratched. I have tried waxes and polishes of many brands and they still remain.the truck has only 6000 plus miles, always washed and garaged. The color is dp wdg blue.

Rear bumper and spare tire holder rotted off .. Rear shackles on both sides.. Gas tank straps and crossmember that holds it up... Now the frame has rotted in half right in middle of truck... Spare tire fell off while driving

Transmission stuck in 4x4 low

2002 ford ranger xlt, failed inspection because of severe rust that developed on the front left sub frame, a arm bolt points and control arm points. The extent of rust is so severe that the mechanic doesn't believe the vehicle can be salvaged, because there is a nothing solid enough left to weld a patch or replacement piece to. Thetruck body is in perfect shape no other rust except the frame. The damage was only visible when the factory front skid plate was removed by the inspecting mechanic. The trucks factory warranty at the time of discovery exceeded the ten year time limit, but was still under the mileage portion.

My 2002 ford ranger was part of a recall pertaining to the cruise control starting fires.i received my notice and took it to a dealer in early october 2007.all they did was disconnect it.they said that i would receive another notice in a few months when a replacement part arrived.as of january 5, 2007, this has not occured.i contacted ford and they just gave me some canned response about a back order and parts not being available for several more months.since they disconnected the unit, my abs light comes on.the disconnection occurred from the brake's master cylinder.all they did was put a piece of electrical tape over the female end of the disconnected point.it was coming off as they put it on.my concern is that a manufacturer can "recall" a product only to disconnect it, and in doing so leave the consumer without a feature they paid for, and more importantly, with a "mickey mouse" manner of doing so that may be causing other problems.i worked for a lighting manufacturer.we have had cpsc recalls.however, i never recalled our recalls just being the unplugging of a fixture with an open promise to correct the consumer problem in the future.how does ford get away with this?

Recall of speed control deactivation switch for 2002 ford ranger, i have been to the dealer about eight times and they never seem to have the part for repair, all i get is the parts have not come in yet!!my control has been de-activated by the dealer but no action for repair of the recall.

2002 ford ranger speed control recall. Consumer states that the problem could not be repaired due to the lack of parts. He states that the parts are still not available. He would like to know when the parts will be in.

Recently my truck unintentionally accelerated as i was backing up in driveway causing an accident. When i picked up truck after collision repair, it suddenly accelerated on highway causing it to fish-tail our of control and nearly causing another accident.

In august you sent me a letter on my ford ranger (scds) speed control. I"ve made three attempts to get it fixed. But every time i take my truck in they always tell me they just ran out and the parts are on back order. I called again today and they tell me to call back on december 2nd. What kind of run around is this? and who is going to be responsible for my truck, car, garage and everything else that is in it?

Received a recall on my speed control.made a appointment at dealership to replace defective part and they disconnected my speed control, but ran out of parts. The dealership and ford motor company have been contacted about the availability of this part[scds] and they tell me january or february 2008. I have been without speed control for over 4 months. As soon as they disconnected my speed control my anti-lock light on dash has been coming on occasionally. The dealership has been informed of this. I am concerned that this could affect my ability to stop or avoid a collision.

The contact owns a 2002 ford ranger.in august of 2007, the contact received a safety recall notice for nhtsa campaign id number 07v336000 (vehicle speed control).she called the ford dealer and manufacturer in january of 2008 and was informed that they did not have the parts and did not know when they would be available.there had been no failure to date.the current mileage was 45,955.updated 02-14-08.

Recall letter stated speed control required replacement. Numerous calls to manufacturer over last 3 months to effect repair resulted in me being informed that they did not have the repair parts. The last estimate i received was 3/08 - eight mounts after i received the letter. Ford does not seem committed to repairing this dangerous defect.

Thank you.

Transmission will jump gears while in park and surge forward with no warning. Cause unknown. Dealer notified.

I received a recall from ford in august 2007.the recall number is: 05s28.i tried to schedule an appointment in sep. 07 with superstition ford in mesa, az.i was told that the parts were back ordered and that they would put my name on a list and call me when the parts were in.i did not receive a call from that day in sep., and therefore, called them again today, jan. 28, 08.i was once again told that the parts were ordered in aug. 07, but had still not arrived as the date of my call.i was still on their list with many others to get the recall scheduled and satisfied.i strongly feel for this recall that the time interval is unreasonable and unsafe.

The contact owns a 2002 ford ranger.the contact received a notification for nhtsa campaign number: 09v399000 (vehicle speed control). However, the part to do the repair was unavailable. I received a letter in aug, 2007 about a speed control device on my truck that was bad.said to go have it disconnected which i did.i am still waiting for the part and was told on 2/14/08 that the part still isn't available.i would like to know what is taking so long to get this fixed.thank you

Received a recall for my vehicle may 07 as of today i was told by ford that it will not be fixed till late june 2008 or later. So i am driving a truck that i am paying for that has no cruise control and when this disconnected my cruise control without telling me till after the fact, it also disconnected my abs system. So now i have no anti lock brakes -hardly any brakes and no cruise control. This is totally unacceptable. Why did they disconnect the system, knowingly without telling the consumer they did not have the part in stock. So i am driving a unsafe vehicle in my option.

The contact owns a 2002 ford ranger.the contact received a ford recall notice in august of 2007 for nhtsa campaign id number 07v336000 (vehicle speed control).he called ford on four separate occasions and they continued to state that the parts were unavailable.the contact feels that the wait is excessive.the deactivation switch has not been disconnected.there had been no failure to date.the current mileage was 46,000.

I recently purchased a 2002 ford ranger.on march 11, the vehicle would not stop as i was turning around near the new philadelphia post office around my lunchtime.i had my foot to the floor and the vehicle would not stop.i ended up hitting the concrete ramp at the tuscarawas county educational building.the tires continued to spin even though my foot was to the floor and i was hitting the concrete barrier!this is the second time i had experienced this however the first time i did not hit anything i just jumped the curb at my apartment.i thought the first time was my error because i hadn't been used to driving a truck.also, after the first time i washed my truck i noticed paint chipping off of the flare... Only the clear coat is chipping...i have taken the truck to ford (humphries) and the service department made some adjustments but were unable to repair the dented bumper because ford advised them there were no recalls.ford has also sent me a letter stating it is an insurance matter.my goal is this: i do not feel i should have to pay anything to get the problems fixed.i want the dented bumper repaired and the chips in the flare repaired.i do not have $500 to wait to be reimbursed on either.what can be done to help me? nlm

The contact owns a 2002 ford ranger.the contact stated that ford motor company is taking too long to repair the vehicle speed control for nhtsa campaign id number 07v336000.he stated that he paid to use the cruise control feature on his vehicle and should not have to wait until next year to have it repaired.there had been no failure to date.the current mileage was 35,000.

The contact owns a 2002 ford ranger.the contact received a recall notice regarding the potential of an underhood fire in his vehicle.the dealer stated that the parts for the recall repair would be unavailable until the fourth quarter of 2007.the dealer also stated that the speed control deactivation switch cannot guarantee that there will not be any leakage, which poses the threat of an underhood fire.the failure could occur whether the vehicle is parked or in motion.there had been no failure to date.the nhtsa recall number was unavailable.the current mileage was 80,700.

Recall#05s282002 ford ranger august 2007letter asking me to contact the dealer - sunset ford. I have been given a new date for the part to be in each time i have called(this says underhood fire can be caused by the speed control).i called in august, september, november, december and today jan 9 2008.i am now told, call in april and "see if the part is in" ???????? this stinks of a bad car from a company that doesn't care!i don't want a problem or a fire!

The contact owns a 2002 ford ranger.the dealer stated the parts for nhtsa campaign # 07v336000 (vehicle speed control) would not be available until october due to the parts are on back order.the current mileage was 64,000.there had been no failure to date.

I purchased 2002 ford ranger edge 4x4 used in aug 2005 w/36k on it. I had it 3 weeks when it suddenly accelerated and wouldn't stop with the brake to the floor. It skidded 70 feet jumped the curb and drove on our lawn and back on the street before i put it in neutral and it slowed enough to stop just inches from the rear end of a parked vehicle. I thought i may have done something wrong since this was my first truck in this class so i read through the owners manual and couldn't determine if i had done anything wrong. I telecommute from home and don't drive often so it was weeks later when it happened again this time going up a hill on wet pavement, the truck fishtailed and went into the opposite lane. Thank fully there was no one in the other lane. I took it to my mechanic who could not determine any problem and it wouldn't replicate for him. It has happened a number of times since then and i have had several near misses and am frustrated that no one can fix this dangerous problem. Our 2nd vehicle has died and now this is our only transportation and since i owe thousands on it still i am stuck-will get nothing on a trade in and cant in good conscience sell it to anyone with this problem.

Vehicles cruise/speed control malfunctions disengages and engage on it's own.stops working with out notice causes vehicle to decelerate rapidly without notice.will not engage again after shutting it off for long periods of time.sometimes vehicle in speed control mode will start surging and then control stops working all together.vehicle has 49,499 miles.

On october 30 2002,i was driving a 2002 ford ranger,my wife and i were going to k-mart and just as i was turning into the parking space,my ranger just took off and i had my foot on the brakes trying to stop my truck, the engine sounded like it was running wide open and i did manage to stop my truck within eight feet.but by that time i hit a shopping cart and a wheel/chair sign.the shopping cart wedged between my truck and the dodge neon that it hit.and did damage to.and the sign bounced off my truck and hit another car,but it only put a scratchon the other car.there was an witness that heard and saw everything.and now my insurance company will not renew my policy as of july 18 2003.i did take my ranger to the ford garage the same day to have it tested.and on november 10 2002,my ranger did the same thing again, but thank god there wasn't no other vehicle close by and i did get my ranger stopped.so now who do i need to turn to for help....rlp ps.this accident was reported to the k-mart police.*nlm

-the contact owns a 2002 ford ranger. The contact was driving approximately between 40-45 mph; proceeding to make a left turn. While braking the vehicle increased acceleration. The vehicle was able to slow down after several attempts. The failure occurred intermittent and more frequent when the air condition system was activated. The vehicle had not been repaired for the malfunction at the time of the complaint. The failure mileage was 34,000.

Ford motor co. Issued recall 05s28 in august 2007.i took my 2002 ranger in on 01 sept and was told parts were not available.check back in late nov.this is a recall problem with the cruise control, and the dealer disconnected it, stating that it was a fire hazard.i took the ranger in on 08 dec and again was told parts were not available and that the dealer had no information as to when ford would send the parts out, except that it would be some time after the new year.in the meantime, i am without use of the cruise control, which is of great benefit to me when traveling.in my opinion, 4+ months is far too long to have to wait for ford to correct a problem of this sort, especially since even the dealer has no idea when parts will be available from ford.this recall inaction has all the appearances of deliberate neglect.

While driving up a hillvehiclesuddenly accelerated backward. The driver applied the brakes, and brakepedal went down to floor.this caused the vehicle to hit a tree.consumer had the vehicle towed the mechanic, who could not duplicate the problem.

I have had multiple issues with my vehicle speed control since i bought the ranger edge pickup since 2002. The dealership has changed hands since is now landers but was called crain ford lincoln mercury.what is happening is the speed control is disengaging when activated and not activating when turned on and then working some time after it has been driven a while. I have 105,000 miles estimated but when engaged i have had it disengage numerous times while driving. This was checked by ford dealership over 7 times since 2002 and they stated could not find any problems at all and stated everything is ok but the problems still persist and it seems once the truck gets warm it starts working but stops working as well. Even sometimes when the truck hasn't been running very long the speed system want engage at all while driving the vehicle. It is very scary though when it disengages and you are aware that it is not working while driving on the interstate and could cause someone to run into me if i don't notice it due to the change of loss of speed. Also there have been many occasions when trying to activate the speed control and it will not engage while on the interstate for long drive times. What can be done????
