Was at a complete stop signaling for a left turn and other driver hit me from behind at aprox. 30 miles/hour.airbags did not deploy, although my seatbelt locked and i was slung forward, missing the windshield by only an inch or two.

Air bag light flashes on and off.indicating it is deactivated according to town ford dealer in redwood city ca.vehicle only has 39,000 miles on it.vehicle is 2001 ford ranger xlt 4 x 4.5 years or 50 mile warranty which i do not fall under because i do not drive much, and regardless of my low mileage the dealership will not honor this defect.this is the second major defect i have found on this vehicle.there was an recall on the egr sensor, which appeared at around 36,000 miles.because i drive rarely it didn't occur until it's 7 year and again i was penalized for "going green", and had to pay for this full repair.can you please assist me to find out if this airbag is an actual defect.ihave seen other discussion groups mention the ford ranger having the flashing air bag light at early mileage.

"takata recall" i have been having problems with the air-bags on my 2001 ford ranger edge 2wd extended cab small pickup truck. I am afraid they're air defective and need to be repaired or replaced. Could you please inform me what i need to do. [xxx]information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).please tell me what i need to do *pm

At fault driver turned left in front of me while i was driving approx. 40 mpr. I was unable to stop. Totaled the front end of my 2001 ranger. I suffered broken kneecap and sternum. Airbags did not open. Ranger towed ..

It had been raining and it was slushy out,my truck got pulled by slush and i hit a guard rail almost head on and bounced off of it and wound up right on the edge of the inside lane of the highway once the truck was stopped my airbags went off, i then had an asthma attack from the powder that came out of the air bags. How ironic that the passenger side air bag was shut off yet it still went off.also when my truck went in the shop to be fixed i found out that both seatbelt pre-tensioners had to be replaced since both of them had broke yet i was the only one in the truck.this truck was fixed by a ford dealer.i would like to know why the seat belt pre-tensioner on the passenger side broke and i would like to know why the air bag went off when it was shut off. I have pictures of the accident and the damage that was done.i asked the ford dealer why the air bag on the passenger side had went off and why the seat belt pre-tensioner had broke and all they could tell me is they did not know.i do not agree with that answer and i would like this to be investigated.i had to pay double of what it would have cost me to replace one air bag and one seat belt pre-tensioner.

Hit a pothole while turning left ; leaving a restaurant.lost control of vehicle for a moment.hit curb on the median, airbags deployed; crossed over grass median.was blinded and drifted over onto oncoming traffic, and back into parking lot wich was my initial departure point.

2001 ford ranger was involved in a front end collision yet the air bags did not deploy.*mr

The passenger seat belt doesn't latch and the airbag light illuminates sporadically. Occasionally for the entire trip and sometimes it goes on and off throughout the trip, yet other times it functions properly!

To begin when i got the truck the air bag light would never go off when ever i turned them on and off. Which made me wonder weather they were ever really off and considering you can't fit a car seat in the back seat i had to put it in the front seat. Then when my wife was driving the spare tire fell off the truck while she was going down the road. Here recently she was driving and some one stopped her to tell her that something fell off the truck about 2 foot long. She called me and said the truck was still running so i told her to just try and make it home and i would look at it because i didn't think it was that serious. Once i started looking at it, a canister had come loose from the truck because the frame broke in half where the canister was connected to the truck because the truck was so rotted. She got the truck inspected in october. I feel that the dude that inspected it should have noticed the frame almost broke in half. I am very disappointed with this truck i have done nothing but put money into it.

I was involved in a high speed collision in my 2001 ford ranger 4x4 pickup on the morning of tuesday, february 10, 2009.i was driving along a county road at 55 m.p.h. When a 2003 ford ranger suddenly made a left turn in front of me.i had the right of way as the other vehicle was stopped at a stop sign before deciding to turn.i could not avoid the other vehicle and struck its driver side door traveling approximately 50 - 55 m.p.h. With the front end of my vehicle.my airbag did not deploy, and i sustained severe whiplash, seatbelt bruising, bruised shins from hitting the bottom of the dashboard,, as well as torn muscles in my neck on either side of my larynx.on august 1, 2008, i went to the ford dealership in my town to have a recall repair performed on the airbag in my truck.were the crash even more serious, the failure of the airbag could have resulted in more severe or even fatal injuries.as of now, i have many months and possibly years of physical therapy ahead of me.i am very concerned and disappointed that the airbags did not deploy in a high speed front end crash as they were designed to do.i believe my injuries would be much less severe had they deployed.

I was driving 20 mph when i press the brake and the pedal went to the floor,a fire started under the hood, i noticed one of the brake lines was burning. Put fire out andtowed the pick up to the shop where it remains.

I was driving in the snow in 2006, when a loud squeak could be heard from the engine compartment.i had the truck service from an independent mechanic.they changed the belt tensioner.this wasn't the problem.the truck continued to squeak at all speeds and all temperature conditions.since then, i have taken the vehicle into 3 different ford motor mechanics and 2 independent mechanics.no of them know exactly where the noise is coming from.it was thought he be the belt.the alternator was replaced, belt tensioner, new pulleys, and 3 different belts.and quess what, the truck still squeaks.i have temporarily fixed the problem with a lot of wd-40 on the belt.but why can't anyone tell me what is making the squeak and fix it.i've suck about $3000 into the truck.i refuse to spend anymore on other mechanics ideas.

Had electrical fire in steering column after just starting vehicle while still in park..

2001 ford ranger throttles up to as much as 3000 rpm at stop while brake is engaged. Some times causing vehicle to proceed into intersection dispute braking(because truck was coasted to stop and brake was at the end of its travel).

I sent in a hard copy letter and an e-mail to ford service in june of 2009. Upon stopping at a party store with my foot applying pressure to the brake pedal, my ford 2001 ranger v6 xlt 4x4 motor suddenly accelerated nearly going into the store.i tried to stop it by shifting into neutral but it was too late.the only thing, which prevented me from crashing into a wall and possibly severely injuring myself or someone else, was a protective post which stopped the vehicle the ranger went over the top of the cement post and was wedged between the bumper and frame.i turned off the ignition to stop the engine..needless to say, severe bumper and front-end damage was done. The range has 35,000 miles.this is the third incident of this dangerous condition. I was stopped at a traffic light at gill and freedom in the spring of 2003 when all of a sudden the ranger accelerated through a red light.i jammed the brakes and nothing happened was able to put gear shift in neutral to stop vehicle.there was no traffic and no damage to ranger.second incident occurred in the parking lot of walled lake western high school.used same technique to stop vehicle after it jumped a curb and ended in the middle of adjacent street.again, no damage.this happened in 2005. I have additional incidents that were reported by othershttp://www.carcomplaints.com/ford/ranger/2002/brakes/accelerates_when_applying_brakes.shtmlin 2010 a similar incident march 12th 2010 was reported by a nissan pickup however, the safety post were not present just the curb on the side of the building of the same gas station/party store located at grand rive and drake in farmington hills, mi.the nissan pickup went right through the window shattering glass window into the party store.a police report was file with the farmington police department.these incidents might not be related to current toyota

Ford sent out recall notices for faulty texas instruments speed control deactivation switch. My 2001 ford ranger was included in the recall. I took my 2001 ford ranger to a certified ford dealership. I picked up my 2001 ford ranger from the dealership, and now the truck stalls out in hot weather. If i use a/c, it stalls out. One day it stalled on a city street, and i was forced to drive into a iron fence. Please help. [xxx]. [xxx]information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

Failure of the 4x4 control module where vehicle will unexpectedly shift out of 4wd causing a near hit with another vehicle.upon doing research found that many other ranger and explorer owners are experiencing the same thing.

My 2001 ford ranger rear safety lights (tail lights, brake lights, and turn signals) will only work when my tilt steering wheel is in the full up right position.i can drive the vehicle in this condition even though it is a little uncomfortable. My wife must place the tilt wheel in a lower position to drive. Since there are no rear safety lights when the steering wheel is in this position she cannot drive the vehicle safely.

Door ajar light stays on due to faulty door latches and switches. Prevents door from closing all the way and also prevents the interior light to shut off. Doors shut but don't latch fully which can cause the door to pop open. This should of been a recall a while ago. When talking to my mechanic and a few other people with a 99-01 ranger extended cab 4 door they have had the same problem. My mechanic says this is a known ford problem. I fear that someone in the back jump seat will be leaning up against the door and it will pop open when going down the road. I am in the process of getting this issue corrected but it is going to be a costly fix that i should not be responsible for since this is a ford ranger problem and i am not the only one having it!!!

The tires have been a problem ever since i bought the car. I have asked the dealer to replace them to no evail. The battery went out, the power window on the driver side died, the brakes have been repaired twice the seat belts on both driver and passanger seats replaced the tramission has gone out twice the computer/brain to run the truck has gone out three times.i dont think i can take this truck breaking down all the time for to much longer. Iam in a rental car more then in my truck. Help. (dot number: w2uu ifotiresize: p225/70r15)

This problem is caused by memory shorting in the engine computer and is partially corrected by disconnecting pos battery terminal switching ignition on/of several times than reconnecting pos battery terminal and starting engine without touching throttle . Than let motor warm up completly , than drive gently until computer memory is reprogramed. Thispartial fix came from jacobs electronics not ford which charged me $75 to tell me it was a memory short in the computer. They also believe that the spark booster caused the problem which is impossible because it occured when the truck was new to me at 22 miles. This memory problem if not corrected requires excessive throttle input to start the truck in first gear to avoid stalling which is a safty hazard. Additionally the computer has calibration difficulties which result in slight missing or roughness while driving normally even with the spark booster which greatly helps engine performance and reduces emmisions. The tail pipe has no carbon deposits in it.when ever and if an after market computer becomes available for this vehicle i will install it.

Problem 1-vehicle regularly stalls or idles so low power steering and power brakes are lost.problem occurs when slowing for and entering corners and when coming to a stop.local dealership tells me this is normal and to not worry about it. Problem 2-clutch does not engage when pedal is released.after a moment it releases on its own accord and truck jerks forward violently.clutch slave cylinder has already been replaced once.

My 2001 ford ranger 3.0 liter automatic hasa lot of pre-ignition under load, regardless of outdoor temperature.i have had 2 different dealerships say there is no way to change the timing to relieve the symptoms.an independant shop told me that that there was a ford technical service bulletin addressing the issue.he said that the problem comes from a control module that changes the engine timing as needed for maximum performance.is there such a cure for me?

Dt: the bed iwas twisted, found out it was dropped on the passenger's side at the factory. The wiring harness was pinched, found out that after driving on thehighwayat 70 vehicle shut off. The doors popped open. Took to body shop, they did not touch anything, they measured against ford spec's.this is in court.

I am writing this message to inform joe the auto driver about a situation i encountered.i own a 2001 ford ranger edge with 28000 miles.the manufactures warranty ran out and the extended ford warranty kicked in with zero deductible.the vehicle has been laboring or buckingwhen it would come to a stop.i brought the vehicle into red mccombs ford ofsan antonio, texas. They promised to have the repair done the next day. I received a call the next day that the repair was complete and i could pick up my vehicle. I gave my name to girl at service desk for the paperwork. She seemed to have a problem finding my paperwork. After spelling my name in english, spelling in phonetics (echo, delta, etc), and finally writing in a piece of paper she still could not find the paperwork.then, she called service advisor who brought his paperwork and still could not find my paperwork. To make a long story short after forty minutes the paperwork was found on another pile right in front of the service girls desk. She then presented me with a bill of $65.00 for the repair.i told him that i had an extended warranty with no deductible.she called the top service manger and he told me, that repair didnt involve a part change; i would have to pay a diagnosis fee.my patience had just been surpassed and i demanded to see the top gun at the dealership.i was taken into the office of charles hylton, service director who proceeded to explain the same story.at this point i was at my wits end and decided i would split the bill; however, this was the last time they were going to see me. He then trumped me and offered to pay the whole bill. I explained that this should have been offered at first.i feel they attempted to wear me down, so i could just pay the $65.00 and move on by my business. I have no co-pay and they knew it! i wonder how many joe drivers have faced an issue like this.

After loosing the battery (power loss) my 4x4cm (4wd control module) went bad on my 2001 ranger 4x4 truck.this caused my 4wd to not function at all.i had to replace the 4x4cm with a brand new one.ford has updated the part.the original part number is 1l54-7h417-ac and the new updated part number is 1l5z-7e453-ac.

When the steering wheel is tilted in any position other than completely up, both my turn singles (front and back) and high beams will not work.

The contact owns a 2001 ford ranger. The contact stated that while driving approximately 65 mph, he noticed smoke coming from under the hood. The vehicle was maneuvered off the roadway where the contact noticed that coolant was leaking from the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to the contact's residence. The contact, a certified mechanic, replaced the thermostat housing on three separate occasions due to a fracture. The failure was recurring. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the problem. The approximate failure mileage was 200,000.

Intermittent starting as if there is no fuel going to the engine. Shut off valve checked, basic trouble shooting done, as i understand doing research, this has been on-going issues with ford rangers doing this. Is there a fix for such?

I was driving approx. 40 mph when my vehicle suddenly sped up and the rpm went from 1.5 to 4.0 without my pushing harder on the gas. I tapped my brakes and it took a few moments to disengage. In the course of 40 minutes it did this 5 times. I checked to make sure the floor mat had not gotten pushed under and it was not. The vehicle just sped up on its own.

My 2001 ford ranger 3.0 has a idlewhen im depressing the clutch idle would stay around 1,300 rpm. Happens usually more when ac is on.

The contact owns a 2001 ford ranger. While approaching a stop sign, the engine would idle violently and act as if it would continue to accelerate. The contact had to depress the brake pedal with extreme force in order to prevent the vehicle from moving forward. The dealer could not determine the reason behind the failure. Several repairs, unknown to the contact were made to the vehicle; however, to date, the failure persists. The failure mileage was 130,000 and the current mileage was 140,000. Updated 02/23/10. *ljthe consumer also stated the engine would stall. Updated 08/12/10

Failure of the camshaft positioning sensor gear. The gear stripped on the camshaft and caused the oil pump to shut down causing the main and rod bearings to seize up.

Truck vehicle was shifting into reverse and a brake failure prompt the driver to switch into drive and suddenly the vehicle spun off out of control(burning tire) and it took off very fast without even touching the gas pedal. Driver tried to stop it but nothing worked.

Thissituation has occurred at least a half a dozen times, when the vehicle is running and in gear with the vehicle at or near stopped, the engine rpm increasesdramatically, if the driver is noton the ball, the truck will surge forward, so far i have been lucky and there has been noting in front of me or i have been able to turn off the engine. Today the rear tires started squealing when this happened.

Dt*:the contact stated upon inspection of the vehicle the ball joint boots were noticed deteriorating.the vehicle was taken to the dealership and they replaced the lower ball joints.the manufacturer was alerted.the upper ball joints failed as well. The timing cover gasket was replaced. Updated 03/22/06.

Intermittently while drivingvehicle stalled and wouldn't restart.dealership has servicedvehicle several times, and performed a diagnostic test, but they were unable to identify the cause of the problem.

2001 ford ranger had just thrown a rod through the oil pan. *mr the anti freeze was leaking into the oil and locking down the motor. *sc

Heard loud rattle under acceleration.have a hearing loss so i could not hear the sound.my son brought it to my attention.took it to the dealer and he diagnosed it as primary timing chain rattle.attempted to get ford to fix it.no luck.

I have a 2001 ford ranger edge. It has a 3.0l v6 engine, a 5-speed manual transmission. It has approximately 108,000 mile on it. I recently had a component fail in the internal engine. It was a cam syncroziner. It cost $467.08 to repair. I was told that this was an extremely common problem by my local ford dealership. I was also told that if this component is not fixed immediately, that it could cause the oil pump to the engine to fail, resulting in the engine losing power. This could cause the loss of brakes, and steering. I was told by several other ranger owners to recommend this to the nhtsa. It should be recalled and all 3.0l ranger's should have there synchronizer repaired or replaced. This component failing could result in major engine damage, injury and death. Thank you!

When drivingvehicle will without any notice stall out onhighway. Contacted dealer, and the dealer cannot find cause.

Vehicle experiencing loss of power whenever air conditioner is being used. Vehicle been in dealer shop on three occasions, and problem still reoccurring.also throttle positioning sensor was replaced, also tachometer is acting erractically transmission not shifting properly.vehicle lost power while coming to a complete stop for a traffic light, consumer hit the vehicle in front of him due to brakes also failing, there was no damage to either vehicle, clutch pedal goes soft, consumer has had to pull pedal up at times, dealer can not find any problems.

Vehicle stalls when making either right or left turns.engine shuts down , causingvehicle lose power. No accidents so far.

Date of purchase smelled rubber on the drivers front wheel. Truck bounces all over continues to do so, this causes poor steering control as well.brakes alternates from grabbing or slow in working, pcm has been reprogrammed, yet the whinning in the engine or drive train continue.suspension very weak, vehicle leans to the right on the curves and steering control is dangerous.

This truck that i am leasing has so many problems that i just want to get out of it. No safety defect mentioned.

While driving engine light came on. Driver noticed vehicle's timing was off,and it was losing power. Cause was unknown at this time.please provide any further information.

I have had nothing but problems out of this truck.itstarted off by having a bad ignition peice to where some days it would start, some it would not.next, the air conditioner leaked and filled up my passenger side floor board on a trip to the beach.then the engine begins to stall.it does not always stall at the same speed or temp. Or anything.i took it to the dealer, they tried fixing it, nothing happened so i took it back again, the still could not replicate the problem so they installed a diagnostic machine which was suppose to give the dealer feedback on the problem, which it did not.so i got the truck back and the same day it did it twice.it still does this about once a day.which day will be the day i am merging across 4 or 5 lanes of traffic and the engine stalls and get run over literally??after all this is still going on i left my house to go to work and i merged into traffic, then all of a sudden the truck dies, loses all power, the check gauge light appears and the oil pressure drops to nothing.i drove it to work ad it did it again so i got ford to tow to the dealer where they fixed the problem.they said it was just part of the computer, and it was no big deal.it is a big deal when you are in morning rush hour traffic and your vehicle loses all power.these are all very serious concerns, i am a captain of a fire dept. And safety is my #1 priority, not just for my self but for everyone around me.hopefully something will get done before the truck stalls at abusy intersection or on the interstate running 70 mph and someone gets hurt or killed.thanks for your time.

Fuel gauge is very innacurate, poor mileage so far (600mi.) engine suddenly shut off while the vehicle was in motion (thank goodness i was coming to a stop at the time) brake line covering is being abraded by contact with the leaf springs (lr).

Whenever vehicle runs over a bump or a pothole it causes rear end to kick to the right or to the left.dealer replaced front and rear shock, some improvements were made, but the problem still occurs. Consumer states that the vehicle oversteers when pressure is applied like during a turn, the problem seems to only occur when the left side of the vehicle hits a bump.engine light illuminated.

While driving and with no warningengine motor will go out, and thenvehicle will start to decelerate. Dealer notified.

After the vehicle was checked the engine started making noises and the vehicle would stall.

Consumer contatced dealership for engine stalling. Dealer stated that pcm module was programmed incorrectly, causingslave belt and clutch to work improperly on a intermittent basis. Please provide further details.

Truck exhibits idle dip below 500 rpm during deceleration when almost stopped.truck tries to push through stop, engine nearly dies once truck is stopped engine corrects and idle returns to normal.

I have problems when i stop sometimes the engine stalls. I also have problems when i am on the open highway with engine running uneven it kind of skips or surges slightly.the engine light comes on and flashes at or around 4800 rpm.i have been in for service and the dealer says ford is working on all the problems i am having.i do not want to have my ford edge stall at a busy entersection or on the highway .hope this helps spur someone on so i can get a faster fix for my problem.thanks.

Engine control allows rpm to stick above 2200 rpm when depressing clutch to shift.after shifting rpm wont come down until clutch drags it down.this caused wheels to break loose on snow resulting in a bad skid in the mountains.dealer has had vehicle in 5 times to fix but can replicate problem.problem is intermittent with about one occurence per day.occassionally it will repeat 9 or 10 times in a row.factory engineer promised to get a recording diagnostic device that can be connected and started when problem is present, but has not followed through.winter is coming and this is a serious safety problem on the icy mountain roads i commute on.

After starting the vehicle consume heard a loud rattling noise coming from the engine.dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem.however, mechanic determined that the problem was due to timing chain failure.

We purchased a 2001 ford ranger in october of 2000. In 2004 the pinion seal began leaking and there was an intermittent clicking/squeak in the drivers front side.the pinion seal was replaced and fluid was topped off.as well the excluder seals were replaced and lubed to repair the clicking squeak.this was all done under the warranty. On 05/24/05 the trucks check engine light came on.it was taken back to crater lake ford and this emissions issue was fixed and we were told we would have to pay 203.39.after much discussion regarding the warranty and the fact that though this is not covered there should have been no issues this soon, we were finally told that there was a possible problem with this and they adjusted the bill to 18.49, did not charge the warranty an amount.however, they put on the receipt that the pinion seal was again leaking, though they did not mention this to us and did not state that they would fix it and that it would be covered. We have the best warranty that was available to purchase when we bought the truck. We tried several times to get the truck in, our schedules being very hectic.we took the truck in today, and were told that the pinion seal was not part of the warranty, that there was only a 12 month 12,000 mile warranty on it, even though they had fixed itunder warranty over 3 years after purchase and it has begun leaking by there estimates less than a year after they replaced it.of course this did little for our disposition and we took the truck and left.we have contacted customer service at crater lake ford and at ford motor corp.now we receive a call stating that the services we were being seen for are covered and that we need to bring it back in. However, the seal is obviously an ongoing issue. We want them to fix the problem that is causing the pinion seal leak.they want to simply change the seal again. We want them to fix the problem, not the symptom.

The contact owns a 2001 ford ranger xlt.while the vehicle was parked, the contact noticed that the rear wheels were sitting lower to the ground than usual.the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where the rear suspension was repaired.a few years later, the vehicle was taken to an independent repair facility to be inspected where the contact was informed the entire undercarriage was severely corroded.in addition, the hinges which held the fuel tank to the frame were severely corroded. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 67,000 and the current mileage was 104,000.updated 01/25/11*ljthe vehicle also had an evap leak.

2001 ford ranger with broken spare tire cable. Consumer states that when he went to change the tire on his truck the spare tire wasn't there and the spare tire cable was broke. Mechanic stated that either the cable was cut or had been pulled.the consumer stated it looked as though the cable pulled free of the bracket which held the wheel and the wheel fell to the ground at some point.

The contact owns a 2001 ford ranger. The contact stated that the tail, hazard, and brake lights, as well as the turn signals were malfunctioning. The vehicle was taken to an independent repair shop where they were unable to diagnose the failure, but stated that it could be related to a defective switch. All of the light bulbs were replaced as a temporary solution. The failure continued. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure, but offered no assistance because the vehicle was not included in any recalls. The failure mileage was 165,000 and current mileage was 180,000.

Consumer states there is a problem with the rear stop light socket and installing a bulb. Dealer/manufacturer was not notified at this time. Nlmconsumer states that the socket is junky, he had to bend the contacts for it to work.*jg

Rear frame on ranger is rusting.the slot where the gas tank strap hooks on to the frame has rusted awaythis caused the gas tank to dropthe whole back frame looks bad.

The vehicle uses up to a half tank of gas for about 44 miles without using a/c or heater.

My 2001 ford ranger's rpm's drop suddenly when slowing down.once i come to a complete stop the rpm will surge or the vehicle will quit.i have to put one foot on the brake and the other on the gas to keep the car running and stop the surging.

Consumer states that the vehicle experienced a gas leak.

Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6)i was driving my ford ranger, (2001 xlt automatic transmission) in an attempt to warm up the truck as the transmission had been acting up as it was not shifting as well as it should into higher gears. The truck was having trouble going past 10-15 mph before shifting gears and was going much slower than normal. As i drove around the parking lot where i work to warm up the truck, it was not going as fast as normal and it warmed up in about 20 minutes. I checked the transmission fluid and it was at a normal level. I turned off the truck and checked the oil which was in the normal range. I proceeded to go to qt and get some gas and on my way back to work, i went to stop at a red light and was almost stopped when the engine started revving up and took off at a very high rate of speed while my foot was pushing the brake pedal down as hard as i could. I then could not slow it down at the next light enough to make the right turn safely. I had to make a u turn with both feet on the brakes and after putting the truck in neutral and pushing the emergency brake, i had to put the truck into neutral and cut off the engine to turn into the parking lot where i work. I thought maybe i had hit the accelerator by accident and had a co-worker watch as i cranked up the truck in neutral. The tires were spinning like crazy and the rpms were way up. I had to turn the car off quickly as with the parking brake on and both feet on the brakes, it felt like the truck was going to take off at any time. My truck is parked with the check engine light on and i am scared to get near the [xxx] thing. I have a call into my mechanic now.

On nov. 22, 2008 my son jeremiah gohn was killed as a result of a fire in the cab of his truck.

When trying to fill the gas tank, the overflow system(?) doesn't work properly.you cannot have hardly any pressure or, as you fill, the gas spews out of the tank before the safety feature on gas pumps can turn off.gas spews down the side of the vehicle, out onto the ground, onto my hand, onto my feet.this creates a combustion possibility at the gas tank as well as the gas pump.this occurs about 99% of the time when i try to put gas into the tank.it doesn't matter how full the tank is.this is an ongoing problem.i've been told that the only way that it can be fixed is by dropping the gas tank.i've also been told it is occurring in other, newer ford pickups.due to the possibility of fire, this should be investigated.thank you.

While starting vehicle my wife was notified by her co-worker that gas was leaking onto the pavement under the driver's side of the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to our dealer where we purchased the vehicle. We were told by the service manager the high pressure fuel line was damaged possibly by road debris, which we had replaced by the dealer. However being the vehicle is a 2001 ford ranger pickup truck with 42,523 miles i feel this should be a safety concern due in part that if my wife's co-worker did not see the problem and my wife continued driving the vehicle certainly a fire and possibly serious injury or death could have occurred.

Fuel pump and mechanisms to support correct operation failed upon ignition in driveway.it is second report given to the nhtsa and it is possible if vehicle is hot explosion could occur.

Fuel pump cracked.as a result, fuel poured onto the muffler.consumer iwasconcerned that the vehicle will catch on fire.

While driving vehicle fuel pump failed at speed of 35-50 mph and emptied 3/4 of a tank of gas unto roadways. Weater was damp and wet,hot weather or different circumstances could of caused injury.

Dt*: the contact stated while driving various speeds, the engine stalled without warning.the vehicle was maneuvered off the road.this occurred several times before the vehicle was towed to the dealer replaced the fuel pump. Updated 11/30/06.

I smelled gas while driving.i checked under the hood and gas was spraying from a leak.the leak was caused by abrasion where the line contacted a hard plastic "protective cover".it could have blown up!this appears to be a defect.

The vehicle shook and the engine failed completely when the consumer accelerated to a speed of 89-90 mph. The dealer indicated that the vehicle was equipped with a fuel cut off device which could cut off fuel at a speed over 85 mph.

Fuel tank level sensor does not accurately indicate level.ford claims they know about this problem but cannot tell me when they will provide a replacement part and fix the vehicle.

Fuel tank over flows when filled, causing gas to run onto the ground.this. In turn, creates a serious fire hazard.

Fuel guage not reading properly, reading empty, it take 12 gals. To fill the 19.5 gal tank, also moving off full after 20 - 30 miles after fill up, dealer says this is normal, please advise.

Engine check light illuminated indicating a malfunction with the high pressure fuel system. After inspection it has been determined fuel was leaking from the top offuel tank. Dealer replacedfuel tank seal. Leaking was approx 1 ft from catalic converter. *yd

Fuel gauge is very innacurate, poor mileage so far (600mi.) engine suddenly shut off while the vehicle was in motion (thank goodness i was coming to a stop at the time) brake line covering is being abraded by contact with the leaf springs (lr).

Fuel leak from top of fuel tank. (high pressure fuel outlet nipple leaking on fuel tank module). *la

Fuel guage drops quickly to one quarter or there abouts and then stays there for a long time.

Corroded supply and/or return gasoline line leaking gasoline in large volumes, resulting in danger of fire and/or explosion.vehicle towed to repair center, awaiting a new line to be transferred from one dealer to another because the ford warehouse has zero lines in stock.

Chassisis severely rusted. You can break chunks of metal off with bare hands.both rear shock mounts have rusted off. Straps that hold gas tank have rusted through. Cross member holding tranny is severely rusted. Gas tank fill tube is severely rusted gas vapor return tube rusted off. Whole chassis.the whole frame is so rusted i am afraid to drive the truck.truck only has 155,000 on it and has always been maintained (have all service records)

I purchased a 2001 ford ranger on february 3rd 2014 from columbus auto body resale.we took the vehicle in to repair the tire to find out the gas tank was hanging off the truck and could not install the gas tank straps to secure the gas tank because the frame is to rusted. The truck is unsafe to drive.

Symptoms included engine stall during highway and uphill driving. Stopped at fuel station to fill tank; when tank approached full; sound of structural failure noted followed by large fuel spillage from tank area (saturated truck rt rear underbelly, ground, rear tire, my shoes and lower portion of pants). Subsequent inspection revealed gas tank strap detached from frame due to severe and widespread frame rot. Tank apparently hanging from remaining corrosion damaged strap and fuel filler neck (caused tank to tilt backwards; starving engine of fuel during uphill or dynamic driving). Fuel filler neck was also severely rotted and finally failed during fuel fill causing entire tank loaded with 16 gallons fuel to become detached at sharp angle.following incident; vehicle professionally inspected revealing extensive frame and suspension component disintegration due to premature failure of ford designed sub-standard materials. Large areas of material missing from both front frame members (rear of engine), large holes in frame areas forward of rear wheels (where fuel tank straps attack), severe and widespread frame and suspension component corrosion.vehicle condemned by inspection personnel; now sits idle in driveway. Ranger purchased new (year end, 2001) with dealer rust-proof. Vehicle regularly maintained and kept free from road salt with regular underbelly wash. Vehicle only had 120,000 miles and looked very clean on exterior. I have owned many vehicles in my 35 year driving history; never have i experienced anything like this prior. Ford obviously used ultra-sub standard materials in ranger critical suspension component designs; without regard for the safety of unsuspecting owners. This is criminal, it will only be a matter of time before people are injured or killed by these design defects.

The right rear leaf spring shackel broke off from the frame due to rust. The spare tire carrier failed due torust and caused the spare tire to drop. The steel shield under the gas tank dropped down due to rust.

Entire frame rusted out-gas tank-rear shackles-bumper fell off.

The gas tank support which was a part of the frame rusted off.

Frame is rusting away. Both rear shock mounts. Gas tank holdingstraps.both chasis rails are rusting away with big chunks of steel falling off. Trans cross member rusting away

Takata recall. My vehicle was stationary when i got to work i nothing my rear bumper fell off with no given warning and i didn't hear it hit the ground i got home and looked under the frame and noticed the whole frame was rotten away and is not safe to drive

Noted piece of metal dangling from rear of truck. Took vehicle to my mechanic and was shown that driver side gas tank strap had rusted away from mounting bracket. Toured underneath vehicle while it was on lift and was astonished to see the rust thru on all components of underbody. Frame, fuel and brake lines, mounting brackets etc. Mechanic unable to find a secure part of frame that would hold temporary repair. {auto body mechanic made temp repair}. The deterioration of this vehicle goes way beyond normal wear and tear. I have maintained this vehicle through its 80,000 miles and the body and paint look perfect. It is a life safety catastrophe waiting to happen. I babied this truck and planned on keeping it many more years. I can't even sell it now due to complete deterioration from premature rusting.

Consumer called complainingwhile driving the vehicle. The interior light is intermittently and can't see the back of the vehicle. Dealer has been notified and nothing they can do. Please provide further information. Ts

Dt: consumer stated the driver side door ajar light comes on intermittently.the vehicle has been taken to the dealership, and they stated it was a bad switch in the door.they want to chargeconsumer $127 to fix it. .this started approximately one to two weeks ago.this could cause dome lights to stay on and drain the battery.

I purchased a new 2001 ford range in nov of that year. The truck came with a hard fiberglass bed cover. It has a locking system and a safety latch at the inside of the top. This safety latch failed when i was in the bed and the top shut down. I have contacted ford about the problem. They have said it is not their responsibility to fix this as they claim it is an aftermarket accessory. The truck was brought into the dealer before the original warranty was up. The top is listed in the owners manual and it was part of the truck at the time of purchase. If my kid's had been locked inside the situation could have been worse.

The contact owns a 2001 ford ranger. While making a turn, the door ajar warning light illuminated. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The vin was unknown. The failure mileage was approximately 110,000.

Door will close, but will not remain secure , it opens whenconsumer drives around a sharp turn.please provide any additional information.

While standing on tailgate both cables broke at the same time, the tailgate droppedto the bumper and i fell to the ground.

I was parked in my driveway, when i reached to release the parking brake.as i pulled the release handle, the bracket and release handle fell onto the parking brake pedal; upon inspection, i noticed that the bolts for the bracket had fallen out without my knowledge.i attempted to put the bolts back in, but only one of them would go back into place, and that one only lasted for a short time.

When i look up my ford ranger 2002 pickup truck and attempt to look at the power train option it comes back with a error on the screen with the commands"get-in-......."it does not give me any search results.

Failure occured while coming to a stop in heavy traffic. There was no heavy application of break or hard stop. There was the metal clunk sound, then while moving from a stop, there was heavy rattaling and bumping felt up through the shift lever. Same complaintas documented by 10119127.

On the date listed, the transmission failed to go into reverse.the repair shop told me that the ford ranger is notorius for transmission problems that include: 1. Failing to go into reverse, 2.failing to go into forward after stopping, 3.jumping gears, or slow gear changes.this information has been confirmed by other shops as well as a google search.in fact, the problem may be severly under reported as ford dealerships may list as other problems and smaller shops may not link the problem.this is a very costly repair, so i'm sure ford does not want to be forced to recall all of the rangers, and it appears that this problem does affect several years of rangers on the market.please google ford ranger transmissions, and look at the amount of complaints.look at the blogs and groups that are complaining about this issue, which if it involves the vehicle moving forward, could impact the passengers if the problem occurs on a freeway entrance ramp or subdivision streets.this is a widepsread problem that is under reported and is not being addressed, and it needs to be examined in more detail.

The automatic transmission performed erraticly.transmission had a tendency to not shift into overdrive upon cold a start.after several minutes of operation, the transmissions performed normal.please describe details.*ph

This complaint is about a ford ranger edge supercab 4x4.i have had this truck barely over 2 years and it has 45,000 miles on it.about one year after purchasing the vehicle i started having transmission problems, the "overdrive off" light flashing and funny shifts from first into second as well as a hesitant acceleration followed by a small jerk.i took it in to have it fixed and apparently it was.about 3 months later the transmission started acting up again in the same fashion. I took it in and once again thought it was fixed until a few months later it started doing the same thing. By this time since i thought the truck was finally fixed i decided to add a 4" suspension lift and 33" tires.when i took it in they told me i need either a new transmission or to have this one rebuilt and that the warranty would cover the cost.after about a week in the shop and torn apart they called and told me the warranty co. Did not want to pay for the rebuilt transmission because of the "extensive suspension mods" and larger tires.let me remind you, i had it in 2 times before the lift was put on for this same problem that has not yet been fixed. After a bit of arguing i decided that i wasn't going to win and that i need a truck.so i am now paying $150 a month for the $3000+ for the work and rebuilt transmission.now, after about 4 months after the work, i am experiencing the same problem yet again...can someone please advise me on how to take care of this problem ???thanks, aaron.*nlm

Vehicle has no second gear. Consumer questioned dealer, who informed him that was howvehicle was designed.

Automatic transmission started shifting hard, overdrive off warning light came on and started flashing. Took car to dealer and they said transmission was bad. This vehicle only has 79000 miles on it. Showed them maint. Records, they said there was nothing they could do. $2800 repair bill for new transmission.

Ford ranger xlt 2001 transmission problems.i have owned this vehicle from new and now just outside of warranty based on mileage, the transmission is needing rebuilding or replacement.the vehicle has only 38412 miles total on it, warranty coverage only lasts until 36000 miles or 3 years.vehicle was purchased in august of 2001.no special operating conditions have existed for this vehicle (i.e. Towing, heavy equipment or item hauling).this vehicle began very early saturday april 10, 2004 flashing the o/d off indicator light on the dash panel.i took this vehicle to a local ford dealership where they indicated that the obdii system was registering 3 different codes having to do with the powertrain system.the codes registering were p0731, p0733 and p0735.according to the service technician who was working on the vehicle there is a tbs for the code p0733 registering.the service manager who i ended up receiving the bad news from only gave me the option of installing a remanufactured transmission at an estimated cost of roughly $2600.i have also taken this vehicle to an independant transmission mechanic to investigate the issue and see what is actually happening.this mechanic has confirmed that the transmission needs to be rebuilt, but also commented that he is seeing more of this happening with this particular transmission model in this vehicle.he also noted that the trend is that between 30-40,000 miles is the range at when this problem happens.i placed a call to ford motor company's customer relations and they are 'researching' possibilities of financial assistance to repair this issue.the main concern that i have with this 'fix' is that it will be replaced with the same model of transmission and that the problem will occur again in 30-40,000 miles.

Trans shift problem 1st to 2nd shift hard shift started about 3 months ago 2001 ford ranger 4x4 ,started only doing it on cold starts now does it all the time cold or hot have to let off accelerator to get to shiftor manually shift from shift lever.overdrive light flashes as soon as it slams into gear ,trans slip. Ford has had on going problems with trans. Been a auto tech for ford for many years its time to have ford look at the on going problems.

Dt:contact states: she bought a brand new ford ranger in 2000 and she has had to put 2 transmissions and 2 torque converters on the vehicle within 70,000 miles. The dealer said there was nothing they were going to do about it. She wrote a letter to the president of ford and to the new motor vehicle board and to consumer affairs. She has talked to consumer affairs at ford. She has also talked to the representative in dearborn mi.there was 34,000 miles on the first transmission she replaced. The second transmission was rebuilt. The consumer began to feel a slipping sensation when going up an incline. The brakes were replaced.

I was driving to work one morning, and the o/d light (over drive light) started to flash on my 2001 ford ranger xlt 4.0 v-6 4x4 truck.i had no idea in what that meant.i drove to work, i called around and that is a trouble condition on the transmission, i said on the tranny it only has 73 thousand miles on it.i was surprised, and the truck is very well kept up.i took it a well know transmission place to have it looked at, and test drove, along with the computer check, and it came back with a reading "incorrect gear ratio on 3".i was like what is that, he said that is ugly.so i took it and got 2 more inquiries, and 1 from a dealership.all the same 3 rd gear trouble.i contacted ford, and spoke to heather, and needless to say she said that it was only my that has the issue with the transmission no one else does.there was a tsb message put out about this trouble in may of 01, so ford knows there is a problem.its going to now cost me a mim of 1500.00 to a max of 2100.00 to fix this transmission.

Consumer states the vehicle experienced transmission problems.

I have had this truck for only one year and have had many problems. First the transmission went beacause it would not go past 2nd gear and the overdrive light was flashing. It was found to be internal parts and external wiring of the transmission. That same day the alternator went and left me with a dead battery. I have taken it into the dealer about 3 times for rough idle and have been turned away saying the cannot feel anything and that not to worry because its still under warranty. Twice i have taken it in for the front suspension due to a vibration to the steering wheel and truck.all rotors were turned and the front was reallined. Also the truck seems to go through gas a bit too quickly, just about a bit over a quarter tank for every 10-15 miles.

Bought 2001 ford ranger in 2005, 18 months later gearbox needed rebuild due to loss of gear selection on auto box.still the gears sometimes do not engage and the o/d light comes on and gear changes are rough.i believe this is a defect in the transmission from what i have read.

While driving between my job in buffalo, ny, and my home in lexington, oh, i suffered a complete transmission failure and was forced to limp into a local ford truck sales place.the failure occurred without any advanced warning and left me limping along at about 35-40 mph on the i-90 thruway during rush hour with heavy traffic traveling 65-70 mph.by the time i traveled the approximate 10 miles, i had totally lost reverse gear and had substantial slippage occuring in forward gears.mechanics inspected the transmission and discovered severe damage to the transmission requiring it to be replaced.ford tech consultants revealed that this is happening to many ford rangers, but no recall has been issued.apparently, the torque on the transmission was increased without redesigning the transmission or seals to be able to withstand the higher torque.therefore, transmission seals are failing under use, leading to severe damage of the transmission.furthermore, ford has no replacement parts available --- even though the damage occurred on 4/11/01, a new replacement transmission won't be available until at least 4/20/01, an unacceptable situation.apparently my truck won't be able to be returned to me for several weeks.ford tech consultants revealed that they are thinking about a recall, but haven't decided yet.my truck only has 9,200 miles on it --- i have had it less than 4 months.please investigate and require ford to assume its responsibilities by requiring a recall, by requiring timely repairs, and by assuming financial responsibility.i cannot provide the vin number currently because i don't have the vehicle, although it should be able to be retrieved from hunter erie ford truck sales of erie, pa or mark ford of bellvile, oh.thank you for your assistance.

Transmission failure; 2001 ford ranger edge- have had problems with prior to warranty expiring. A tsb for the initial problem was performed by the dealer, but the problem persisted and when analyzed, the same error code came up.

I have a 01 ranger 4x4 with 4.0l engine and 4.10 rear end. I continue to have an intermitant shudder problem from 1-2 and then again from 3-4 (around 2500 rpms) and 4-5 (around 2100 rpms). I have had the transmission serviced several times and had the following repairs performed:1. Replaced driveshaft2. Overhaul valve body3. Pcm reprogrammed4. Replaced valve body5. Replaced valve body again6. Overhauled transmission replace overdrive drum due to an uneven surfaceso far, i have had over $2,500 in repairs (all under warranty luckily).however, the shudder is still there, although it is not as harsh as it once was. A new problem has begun in the last few weeks, now when you put it in gear, it takes several seconds before it engages. In fact, you can sit there with your foot on the gas and it won't go. Once the truck is warmed up, this is not a problem.the shudder that is felt is erratic, but can be made to shudder if driven at the correct speeds.

Consumer stated:there was a rattling noise, primarily in the power train area,it madenoise when the accelerator was applied. It would happen when the consumer reached up to 2000 rmp's.

The contact owns a 2001 ford ranger.after the contacts vehicle was repaired under the speed control recall, the transmission began to fail.while driving between 50 and 55 mph, the transmission automatically shifts into neutral and the engine revs.the vehicle also shifts into neutral whenever the cruise control is engaged.the vehicle has been to the dealer twice regarding this failure.the dealer stated that the speed control recall repair was not the cause of the transmission failure.they stated that he needed a new transmission, which will cost $1,300.the nhtsa recall id number for the speed control was unknown.the current mileage was 66,100 and failure mileage was 65,800.updated 09/25/07

The consumer had problems with engine acceleration.it happened at different times. Dealer was contacted, and stated they were not able to find anything wrong withvehicle.consumer added, the transmission shifted before the vehicle accelerated uncontrollably.

Consumer contatced dealership for engine stalling. Dealer stated that pcm module was programmed incorrectly, causingslave belt and clutch to work improperly on a intermittent basis. Please provide further details.

The gear shifter stuck in park. Consumer had to giggle the shifter to remove it from park into drive. Two days later, while making a left turn, the steering wheel locked up. When this occurredconsumer heard something break loose in the column, followed by a rattling noise. The steering wheel unlocked afterbreaking loose, anda rattling noise occurred. Prior to this failure when the steering wheel was turned there was an abnormal clicking noise. Dealership refused to take the steering column apartto inspect it until they could duplicate the failure. They were only willing to replace the steering pump, but the failure was in the steering column.

2001 ford ranger--automatic transmission, remove ignition key and it can easily be taken out of park.key in ignition with engine running, i no longer have to press the brake to get into any gear.i have experienced this same problem in february 2003 when it was repaired by local ford dealer.

I parked my truck thursday night february 8, 2007. I placed the truck in park and removed the keys. When i returned to my truck early the next morning, i discovered that the truck was actually not in park, even thou the keys were out of it, and the shift indicator showed the vehicle being in park. Had the truck been parked on an incline it could rolled away. I found the head of a small screw laying on my floorboard which have broken from the shifter. When i repaired the truck on sunday i discovered a very disturbing situation where the gear selector is attached to the transmission cable. The assembly is held together by a small 6mm screw, which the head i found on the floorboards. This happened at 99k mileage.

Vehicle jumped from park to reverse whileengine was not running andbrakes were not depressed. Dealer has been contacted. Please provide further details.

2001 ford ranger 4.0 automatic.erratic shifting during cold weather until the vehicle warms up.have talked to many others and the problem according to some dealers is the transmission cooler is placed to far foreward of the radiator and the transmission fluid gels during cold weather.talked to our ford dealer in town and they say alot of the escapes that use the same transmission and cooling system have lost transmission due to this.the same transmission is also used in the mazda and my boss at work just had his go out at 15,000 miles on the vehicle.it seems ford knows about the problem but is not inclined to do anything about it.my vehicle during cold days ( below 30 ) acts like someone is putting the clutch in and out very rapidly when the automatic transmission attempts to shift when it is first driven.had it at the dealer last year before my ford warrenty expired and they found nothing.of couse if was above 40 that day.any influence that could be brought to ford to address this issue would be helpful.it seems on the vehicles they are fixing now, ford is putting in another safety valve in the cooling system to address this issue so all of the transmission fluid won't blow out.thanks for listening and i hope you can help.ford won't.

Loud squealing coming from the front axle: excluder (dust) seals.my local ford dealer has replaced these seals twice already. Now they have went out again. The noise is extremely loud and embarrassing. I have no doubt i'll get a ticket for faulty equipment if an officer hears it. I don't even want to drive it due to the noise.now that my truck is out of warranty, i fear ford won't fix their defective parts.i have contacted the dealer who replaced them the last time; however they have not returned my call.on a side note: i take meticulous care of my ranger and never abuse it. There is no way a seal like this should go out this many times, and from what i've read there are several people with this problem. Ford needs to fix their defective parts once and for all.

Consumer states that the front cv joints are making a "cracking" noise when turning corners or applying the brakes.dealer diagnosed that the seals were defective and replaced them. 1 week later cv joints began cracking again.

While driving and approching a freeway entrance the vehicle stick shift became very difficult to shift. Finally when entering 5th gear the vechile slipped into neutral and the stick shift froze up. I had to coast of to the side of freeway and be towed to nearest ford dealer. The diagnosis was a faulty master and slave cilinder and a faulty clutch system.this vehicle is only 3 year old and has 53,000 mi. I feel that this is a premature system failure.

The clutch pedal gets almost to the floor before the clutch will disengage. This problem comes and goes. I am concerned that it will not disengae at all at some point. There has not been an accident because of this yet. I have not fixed it yet.

Consumer states while driving clutch pedal fell to the floor, and would not come back up. Took to dealer and they stated the pin on master cylinder fell out.please provide any furtherinformation. Ts

While trying to shift from second to third gear clutch pedal moved freely, consumer unable to use clutch to shift. Gear lever had to be forced into gear. Please add further information.

While slowing down at a stop light i tried to engage my clutch pedal and gear became stif, and i could not shift out of 4th gear. The clutch pedal would travel down to almost the floor and not come back up. I got the gear shift into netural and sat for the light. The clutch pedal slowly returned to it's normal position, i depress it again and there was alot of free travel, but i did get it into gear and drove right into a earnhardt dealership that i was going by.i had taken my vehicle into have a similar clutch problem check out last month at the same dealership earnhardt and they could not fine any thing wrong through computer testing.they are saying now that it could be the clutch master or a clutch slave component. The vehicle a ford ranger 2001 has under 36,000 miles and just over 3 yrs old. I have an extendedwarranty with western national warranty scottdale, az 85255 they say they don't cover these components. I never recieved a copy of the policy. I am waiting on this information to be sent to me. I do not under stand how these component with less than 36,000 miles and mostly highway driving go out.

I have a 2001 ford ranger 4-wheel drive off road. It has 22.000 miles on it. I have driven it approximately 10 (ten) miles in 4-wheel, never off-road. I had all oils changed and analysed to ensure no hidden problems. The results are: transfer case (first test) abnormal amount of copper--critical amount of aluminum--critical amount of silicon. Secont test--sikicon levels high--wear metals high--front differential--modearqate levels of dirt--wear metals high--rear differential--nickel level appears high---transmission--test indicate no corrective action--engine--tests indicate no corrective action (i have changed oil and filter 7 times). Ford motor company claims if no problems are current there is no problem. Oil contamination leads to problems. Ford motor comapny is selling defective equipment doomed to fail.

Consumer states that the front cv joints are making a "cracking" noise when turning corners or applying the brakes.dealer diagnosed that the seals were defective and replaced them. 1 week later cv joints began cracking again.

While driving at approximately 40 mph on a country road the vehicle began to vibrate.the driver pulled over, got underneath the vehicle, and pushed on the universal joint which was tight.the circular sound damper broke off.the driveshaft caused the vehicle to shake.the owner later contacted the manufacturer, and was told that there was nothing they coulddo.this problem caused rattling and the vehicle would become hard to control on the highway.the consumers warranty had expired and there was nothing that ford would do to help with the problem. *sc

Vehicle has a constant vibration, and a very heavy vibration at 65mph.it comes up through the seat and the steering wheel.i have had several people tell me it sounds like the drive shaft.dealership says it has a harmonic imbalance in the engine, and ford does not have a fix for it yet.i was told i have to wait until they do, or just start throwing parts at it trying to find a fix.i was told "their engineers are working on it".have inquired since and found they still have no answer.if it is the shaft then i could end up catapulting myself and my vehicle.it has an aluminum shaft (from what i have been told), not sure if that has something to do with the problem.i am very concerned about my safety and the safety of those around me.i would like to have the problem fixed.please help me force the manufacturer to research and resolve this problem as soon as possible.thank you, sincerely, [xxx]. I'm driving a lemon that i purchased from crain ford in benton ar. After 20 months of hassles from crain and ford motor, i am still driving a faulty vehicle that the maker can't diagnose, yet i'm told that it is safe to drive the vehicle. Ford closed my case and neither party has been helpful at all.

Driveshaft sheared off at highway speeds, causing loss of control.rear end locked up.there are alot of ford rangers out there and this could happen to someone else.our dealer said they had never heard or seen this type of problem before.we thought this problem needed to be reported.

The shift knob of my stick shift slips off leaving me in neutral as i shift from 1st to 2nd or 3rd to 4th gears.this has nearly caused 2 accidents where i was almost rear-ended as the knob came off while i was trying to accelerate into traffic.this prevented me from accelerating into the traffic flow.because i was stuck in neutral i had to coast (one time while merging onto a freeway) until i could get the knob back on and complete the shift into a gear.

Transmission failure

I was driving my 2001 ford ranger down the road, i pushed in the clutch to change gears and something popped.my clutch pedal was now incapable of actuatingthe clutch to change gears or put it in gear after i put it in neutral.i had to jerk the gearshift out of gear into neutral and stop as traffic had stopped for a red light.we had to push the truck out of the way of traffic.after examining the engine compartment, i saw that the clutch hydraulic line that attaches to the clutch master cylinder had popped off.the roll pin that secures that particular connection had worked itself loose and allowed the line to pop off.the next day i removed the clutch master cylinder, reservoir, and hydraulic line.all the parts were still good, so i bench bled the assembly, installed, and bled the clutch slave cylinder.upon further investigation, i read that ford had issued a technical service bulletin regarding this exact problem and issued a free fix if a customer has this problem and the truck is under warranty.well, my truck isn't under warranty and fixing it myself was a hassle.i don't need my clutch parts failing like this when i'm crossing an intersection nor does anyone else.it's a major distraction that can cause an accident.even if this problem doesn't qualify as a recall issue, they could at least mail me a cotter pin with a letter telling me to look out for this problem.the tsb number is 01-24-1 dated 10/01/2001.

The clutch would not go into gear when it sat for long periods of time, the vehicle was taken to the dealer twice but they were unable to find the problem. *mj*nlm

I was driving on a residential road, coming up to a third speed bump.i stepped on the brakes to slow down a little bit and my engine revved and started going faster.i hit the brakes and my truck spun out, off the road and stopped.the seat belt harness did not lock up; the shoulder strap stayed loose, and my head was being hit against the steering wheel.then, somehow i fell out of the truck.this has never happened before.05/17/13 i took my truck in to get the recall fixed, and get everything checked out.

I can't buckle my seatbelt. The mechanism james when i attempt to buckle my seat belt.

The contact owns a 2001 ford ranger. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 35 mph, the driver side seat belt detached from the buckle without warning. When attempting to re-attach the seat belt into the buckle, the latch failed. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the seat belt and seat belt buckle needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact stated that the nhtsa campaign number: 017v227001 (seat belts) directly relates to the failure experienced with the vehicle. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that the vin was not included in the recall. The failure was mileage was 140,000. Updated 02/26/16*ljupdated 03/14/16.

The passenger seat belt doesn't latch and the airbag light illuminates sporadically. Occasionally for the entire trip and sometimes it goes on and off throughout the trip, yet other times it functions properly!

Driving down the road my seat belt pops out randomly any phase of driving after i latched it and pulled on it to check. This has happened numerous times now.

The contact owns a 2001 ford ranger.while driving 55 mph, the vehicle slid on a patch of snow.the rear wheels lost traction and the vehicle flipped over twice before crashing into a tree.the air bags failed to deploy. The vehicle struck a tree.the driver suffered bruised ribs on the left side and a stiff neck.the passenger sustained major bruises everywhere including her back, legs, and wrists.she also sustained a severe bump on her back and minor cuts.the vehicle was towed and is currently parked in the contact's driveway.the vehicle has not yet been inspected by a mechanic or dealer.the contact is assuming that the vehicle is destroyed.he will wait until the spring to check the frame on the vehicle; however, he believes that the passenger should not have sustained that much bruising and injuries.the contact also believes that there is a defect with the passenger side seat belt.during the crash, the seat belt did not tighten up, which allowed the passenger's body to jerk around and become bruised.a police report was filed.the current and failure mileages were 82,000. Updated 02/05/09 updated 02/09/09.

Passenger side seat belt receiver unlatches seemingly at random while vehicle is in motion. The red button does not fully return to the top of the unit which may cause the unlatching. Bodily injury could occur in the event of a crash. There is a nhtsa recall on some 2001 ford rangers for the safety belt but the service manager of the local ford dealership claims there is no outstanding recall or programs on this unit.

No accident.my complaint is both seat belts unbuckle intermittently without warning.i am paying out of my own pocket for this default. The local ford dealership claims my vehicle's vin number does not apply to the recall...stating both buckles were fixed before the truck was originally sold.i have a hard time believing that these belts were replaced.the costumer service manager said it is a coincidence... ??i bought this vehicle for my teenage son so i am having them put in tomorrow. The driver's seatbelt alone is $250.00 the passenger's seat is $185.00 and labor $150.00. I have never heard of cars/trucks having seatbelt issues...and then to be so costly. Just very disappointed.

Passenger seatbelt releases randomly for no reason.

Seat belts constantly coming unbuckled. While driving and stopped

I have a 2001 ford ranger super cab 4x4. I was told by the delaware co. Health dept. Childseat tech. That this vehicle will not safely accept a car seat due to the seatbelts being mounted to the doors. She refered me to your site for further instructions in the matter. Is this a true statement? what can be done to correct the problem?

The contact owns a 2001 ford ranger. The contact stated that the front driver's side seat buckle could not be safely secured without making an adjustment each time the seat belt was used. The instrument panel would illuminate when the seat belt was not secured and once the adjustment was made manually by the contact the warning sensor would go off. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer, who diagnosed that the front driver's side seatbelt buckle needed to be replaced. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 15000.

Seat belt comes unlatched at low speeds upon hitting bumps.

The driver seat belt buckle unexpected unlocks while driving. It has been happening multiple times before.

The contact owns a 2001 ford ranger. The contact stated the drivers side seat belt did not lock in place and opened while driving. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who stated that the failure was not covered under nhtsa campaign id number 01v227001(seat belts: front: buckle assembly), since it was closed. The dealer advised the contact that the seat belt could be replaced for $600. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and offered no assistance. The failure mileage was 104,000.

Both drivers and passenger seat belts came unlatched while driving. I have informed ford motor company customer service and they indicated that there was a recall on this issue, however they had replaced the belts with defective ones that sporadically come undone while driving. Customer service indicated that they are not under warranty, at this time.why are they not responsible to replace with ones that work.if i buy new ones, will they be defective. Customer service could not respond with an answer and is avoiding answering.

Airbags partially deployed when i stopped quickly. There was no contact or exterior damage to vehicle.

Seatbelt unlatches at random. Seems to be more likely to occur when it is hot outside.

Driver side seat belt retracting mechanism came apart and made seat belt inoperative.i bought a new seat belt and replaced it.replacement seat belt did same thing 9 months later. Dealer replaced it free of charge.3 months later same thing happened again.dealer replaced it again.3 months later it broke again.warranty on parts is for 1 year so i am liable to replace it.i am concerned if they are made this poorly, will i be protected in case of a collision.the mechanism is held together with small plastic tabs that breakoff and cause the seat belt mechanism to come apart and not retract.

Consumer was involved in an accident and his seatbelt equipment did not hold and his air bags did not deploy. *mr the consumers skidded across the road and struck another vehicle head on.(model/xlt) *scrq04011.*pco

Dt: the contact stated that someone was driving this vehicle and had an accident. The seat belt on the driver's side did not hold the contact back, and hit the steering wheel. Upon impact, the air bags did not deploy until after driver hit steering wheel. He said the fuel safety cut off switch did not work because he could start the vehicle without hitting the circuit breaker. The contact was going about 35 mph, slid into a car at a green light. Dealer and manufacturer have not been contacted yet. Thecontactwas injured. The police came and a report was taken. Vehicle was totaled. Updated 11/29/2005 - the seat belt did not properly restrain the consumer resulting in multiple breast contusions.the air bag deployed after the consumer's head had already hit the steering wheel.

To follow up from a previous post on or about aug 8, pertaining to the drivers seat belt. I went to the ford service represenative yesterday, 13 aug, and was told that the belt would be in tomorrow (today 14 aug). And i did not receive a seat belt. This has gone on for over 2 months, and i still feel insecured about having to drive without a seatbelt. Please reply to let me know if anything can be done. Thanks.ie04074.*pco (not related to rq)

The contact owns a 2001 ford ranger.the contact stated that the seat belts have failed on multiple occasions.within ten minutes of use, the seat belts loosen and fail to remain fastened.the vehicle was taken to the dealer and they were able to duplicate the failure, but could not figure out how to perform the repair.as time progressed, the failure became more frequent.the contact returned to the dealer and they informed him that the seat belts needed to be completely replaced.he discovered nhtsa recall number 01v227001 (seat belts:front:buckle assembly), but the dealer informed him that the recall was repaired when the original owner had the vehicle.the contact feels that this is a safety issue and that he should not have to pay to have the seat belts replaced.the current mileage was 98,000 and failure mileage was 50,000.

Dt*:the contact stated the passenger side seat belt releases from the buckle without warning.additionally, the tailgate cable on the driver's side broke while attempting to open the tailgate.the vehicle has not been inspected by the dealer; however the manufacturer was alerted.

Passenger-side seat belt becomes un-buckled at random times.the buckle initially engages and seems to perform correctly, but at any moment it may disengage from the latch.i reported this problem to five star ford on 7/24/01.they "tested" the belt latch and reported it was ok.their "test" is defective.the belt continues to become unlatched at random times.i returned to five star ford on 8/21/01 and complained lots and demanded a replacement latch.they informed me of the recall, and told me they are ordering a replacement.i can't believe they didn't replace the latch when i first reported the problem in july!their "test" does not detect the random-behavior failures that occur with this seat belt.this should be a total recall and replacement, whether their "test" dictates it or not! it is over 2 weeks later, and still no replacement part for me, and seat belt is still unbuckling. Was at a complete stop signaling for a left turn and other driver hit me from behind at aprox. 30 miles/hour.airbags did not deploy, although my seatbelt locked and i was slung forward, missing the windshield by only an inch or two.

Dt: seat belt retractorfailed on the consumers 2003 ford explorer .the consumer took thevehicle to the dealer and they said this happened all the time. The consumer was involved in a car accident and the air bags did not deploy at40 mph .the consumer had to manually place the seat belt back into its position it did not retract. The dealer informed the consumer the springs were weak and they would fail again if replaced.

The drivers side shoulder belt first locked up, then it pulled all the way out and will not retract. I took the vehicle to the dealer, but they did not take the rear door apart to see what caused the trouble. My children received a phone call in early july that the part would be in around 23 july. To this date, aug 7, i have not received a call yet. I have called to local ford dealers to find even an off color belt, but none are to be had. I fell unsecure, and even guilty driving this vehicle without a seatbelt since it is a law in this state, and i have to drive on an army post which is the law there also. I have also tried everthing i can to get this fixed. I even took the door apart to see if the mechanism could be fixed (which was more than what they did at the dealer), but it is un-repairable. (i have 20+years experience as an army mechanic) i would have even tried to switch the belt with the passenger side, but it will not work (the truck is a 4-door and will not swap out).thanks for your time.

2001 ford ranger with speed control recall. Consumer states that he was informed that no replacement harness was available. When the harness was available after the repair the abs and airbag warning lights illuminated.the consumer stated the brakes have started to grab on initial brake application. Which caused the vehicle to jolt to a stop.the consumer was informed the harness disconnection had nothing to do with the warning lights illuminating. The dealer stated the air bag problem was due to a seat belt problem.

Right front seat doesn't slide or tip forward enough to get into rear of vehicle. Also, can't reach in to fastened safety belt when a childis in rear.contacteed ford, and ford stated thatwas the way vehicle was designed.

My driver side seat recliner feel backward during a quick stop. The recliner pin appears to have broken. In order to drive the vehicle i must prop up the seatback with a box so the seat will not fall backward, which would make the vehicle unsafe to drive.

Dt*: the contact stated while driving 35 mph, the vehicle slid on black ice and rolled down a hill.the driver seat back pushed forward trapping the driver, and caused minor injuries.a police report was taken.the vehicle was towed to the tow yard and later deemed totaled by the insurance company.the dealer was not contacted.

Consumer has extended cab with seats that face toward the door.seats don't have good support or stabilty. Occupant's head hitsback ofseat whenbrakes are applied. Complaint hasnot beeen filed with manufacturer.

Bolt in drivers side seat sheered into 3 pieces causing the back of the seat to fall back rapidly while i was driving.

Undercarriage and frame has excessive rust problems causing parts on frame to fail and fall off.

Picked up kids from bus stop (5 and 6 years age) with 2001 ranger parked in gear on gravel driveway grade with emergency brake engaged. Loaded kids and myself, started vehicle and released emergency brake. Brake pedal went to floor, vehicle took off down hill. Pushed and pumped pedal hard to engage rear brake valve; no rear brakes. Engaged emergency brake (now at considerable speed on grade). Left rear wheel locked skidding vehicle to right side on gravel drive, corrected with steering avoiding roll over. Subsequent inspection revealed extensive premature corrosion to vehicle frame, suspension and brake components. Both front and rear brake lines compromised with catastrophic failure during emergency.my kids and i could have been killed or injured because ford saved a few bucks using below standard imported steel. Ntsb; are you in some way being paid-off by ford to ignore the thousands of safety complaints and incidents associated with extensive corrosion on these vehicles? do not even attempt to assign blame on salty eastern roads; many other vehicle driven under identical conditions do not fall apart so consistently and completely. Many undercarriage parts on my ranger are not even recognizable due to near complete disintegration. My truck has an 'a' title and was rust proofed prior to delivery. I take good care of my vehicles and regularly wash undercarriage. How many people will be injured or killed before action is taken?

I hit the brakes and the pedal went to the floor.i was lucky that i was going relatively slow and there was no traffic.brake line from abs unit to rear brake hose had failed.i am surprised that this hasn't been a recall as i have two friends with ford rangers who have had the exactsame failure.one resulted in as crash.i also informally ask other ranger owners and many have had the same failure.i have owned many other cars, for longer time periods and far more mileage without this kind of failure.

On several occasions attempted to apply brakes and with brake pedal clear down to floor, vehicle continued to move, seeming to accelerate, rather than slow down.first few times this happened, there was no one else in front of me or my wife at the stop sign, but today, there was.i had to swerve into the ditch to avoid a pile up.this occurred at 35 mph.damaged a fence and parked truck on someone's personal property.minor damage to the ford ranger. Did not get problem checked out the first 2 times, as this occurred when wife was driving and the problem went away and was forgotten.i will definitely be taking it to the shop next week to have this checked out.based on the other complaints, this seems to be a common problem with these rangers. How many others just haven't been reported, or perhaps died due to failure of the brakes and couldn't report the problem???

Brake pedal went to the floor, while attempting to slow down to a stop. As i was approching stopped traffic, and put my foot on the brake pedal to attempt to slow down. The pedal went to the ground and the truck continued to move. After several attempts at the brake pedal, the rear wheels locked up but the front did not. Causing me to almost spin out on the freeway going about 65mph. The local ford sercive department says it was due to a panic stop that the brake fluid boiled and the pads over heated. But i did not attempt a panic stop. I was going 65 for about 10 minutes, when i attempted to slow down the brakes simply failed. They are charging me for new brake pads, seals and a complete brake fluid flush. Almost $350 dollars.

In 2001 purchased a new ford 2001 xlt ranger from a dealership.in march/april 2009, at 76,000 miles it became necessary to replace the entire rear brakeline system due to rot.in dec /jan 2009 the bed of the truck and the rear bumperbecame loose.in the early spring of 2010 the rear bumper fell off in my hands.the vehicle was set for service at an auto repair shop.upon inspection the frame and bed attachment, leaf springs and frame attachments, main frame, were corroded and rotted with visible holes.the vehicle was deemed unsafe to drive.the repairs have not been undertaken because a suitable replacement frame is unavailable and repairs at this time are unaffordable.

The rear brakes locked up which caused the vehicle to skid.

The vehicle came from the manufacturer with the wrong rotors. After 19 miles, the rotors and brakes were changed, and again at 32 miles.

Consumer was braking for a speed bump whenbrake pedal went to the floor, when the vehicle wheels hit the speed bump both air bag deployed, as a result the driver lost control of the vehicle and ran into a ditch, and allairbags deployed.. *nlm

The contact owns a 2001 ford ranger. The contact took the vehicle into an automotive center for a routine oil change. The mechanic showed the contact where the metal on the caliper was deteriorating and flaking off. The contact had no prior problems with the brakes before being informed by the mechanic. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer had not been notified. The vin was unavailable. The current and failure mileages were approximately 44,000.

I was advised by the ford dealer where i bought a used ranger that the rear brakes had been replaced. Upon my own inspection this proved not to be true. Do i have a legitimate complaint and who do i contact for follow up?

Consumer attempted to apply the brakes, however the vehicle failed to stop.

The contact owns a 2001 ford ranger. The contact stated that the brakes on the vehicle did not function properly when it was foggy, cold, rainy or damp. The brakes were replaced several times but the failure continued. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer who stated that the seals on the rear axle leaked fluid onto the brake pedal. The vehicle was involved in a crash in 2009 that the contact believed was due to brake failure. The failure mileage was 250 and the current mileage was 102,000.

The vehicle experienced extended stopping distance. Tsthe dealer attempted to fix the problem twice with no success.

Truck vehicle was shifting into reverse and a brake failure prompt the driver to switch into drive and suddenly the vehicle spun off out of control(burning tire) and it took off very fast without even touching the gas pedal. Driver tried to stop it but nothing worked.

Complete brake failure due to a leak over the rear driver side wheel. This occurred at low speed (10 mph), and i was able to stop the truck with the emergency brake.i thought the braking systems in modern trucks have redundant lines so that if there is a leak, only half the brakes fail?

I was driving 20 mph when i press the brake and the pedal went to the floor,a fire started under the hood, i noticed one of the brake lines was burning. Put fire out andtowed the pick up to the shop where it remains.

The contact owns a 2001 ford ranger.while drivingapproximately 60 mph extreme pressure was applied to the brake pedal.the contact stated that occasionally you can feel the brake pedal pulsate when the anti lock braking system engaged but the brakes did not pulsate. The vehicle began to slow down instead of coming to a stop. The contact stated that the failure occurred several times. The vehicle was not examined to determine the cause of failure. The failure and currentmileages were 36,800.

This is the most unusual failure i've ever heard of on a vehicle.mechanics have never even heard of these parts failing. How do all four abs brakes failed simultaneously?pedal pumped wildly (3-4 inches 3x per second) and i don't know how i did not die.

Traveling approx 68 mph i swurved to avoid going off road.as i jerked the stirring wheel to my rt then back to my left i stepped on my brakes with a hard and consistant presssure, causingmy front breaks lockup, which resulted in me losing control of my truck it !!spinning out of control i went only to come to rest after a frontal impact of approximately 55 to 60 mrh as well as a rear impact speed at this point unknown. Besides my front breaks locking up, neither mydriver or passenger sideair bags deployed.

Ford 2001 ranger was notifiedaugust 2007 of a safety defect with the speed control wiring.i went to my dealer, and was told thenew wiring harness was not available, but the existing wiring was unplugged, which would disable the cruise control, & the new harness would be available in november.immediately, after the dealer unplugged the speed control deactivation switch (scds), there was a fault light for the brake anti-lock system.i went back to the service department and ask why, & was told there was no connection to the speed control sensor.they said they 'fixed' the problem, and i drove home.in less than two miles the anti-lock brake light came back on.the next morning, the light came on twice while driving to and from work.again the dealer said it was not related to the speed control problem.however, i have visited several web sites where many other people are also having the identical problem, which only started when the scds was disconnected, while waiting for their new wiring harness.when this warning light is on, the anti-lock brake system does not work. When i reconnected the scds, the warning light does not turn on and the anti-lock system works normally. I have called the dealer about this problem, and to ask when i can get the new wiring harness installed.i am being told the two problems are not related, and that there are not enough new harness kits available. I choose to have better brakes every day, so i have reconnected the scds until i can get the new wiring harness installed.how many other people are doing the same thing?how long is reasonable for ford to delay getting the new harness installed?

No summary listed for above vehicle.

While driving at any speed andapplyingbrakes vehiclepulls to the left or right.also, at slow speed applied on brakes and brake system will lock up.

On 4 different occasionswhile driving at 55 mph and braking hard, pedal goes to a stop and abs releases. But, does not continue to pulsate, causing a longer time to stop.

The tires have been a problem ever since i bought the car. I have asked the dealer to replace them to no evail.

This vehicle has been repaired twice for front brakes pulling hard to the left fixed twice and dropped of again for the third time on 12/08/01.i am very concerned with the safety of this vehicle and the faulty braking system:rotors, pads replaced twice , hoses all have been replaced prior to 12/08/01.

While driving and applying brakesdriver can hear a loud noise. Dealer has been notified. However, cannot find cause.

Driving on an incline of about 30 degrees and stopping on the incline applyi the foot brakes, after releasing the foot brakes the car would roll backwards.while coming down on the same incline and stopping on the incline with the foot bakes and selecting rev and releasing the foot barkes the car would roll down the incline. Took the car to the dealer for a check of the problem. They ran some test and said that this was normal. I disagreed, the truck is still doing the same thing.

Fuel gauge is very innacurate, poor mileage so far (600mi.) engine suddenly shut off while the vehicle was in motion (thank goodness i was coming to a stop at the time) brake line covering is being abraded by contact with the leaf springs (lr).

Right rear brake line is rubbing againstshock absorber and can result in loss of brakes while driving. Cause unknown. Dealer notified.

The brake pedal and gas pedal are too close together and the travel of the pedals overlaps making it possible to accidentally press both petals at the same time.this ocurred in the winter when i was wearing heavy boots but is possible at any time.

When appling brakes, pedal goes all the way down to the floor and causes vehicle to pulsate, brakes do not hold.dealership is aware of problem.the consumer applied brakes for emergency, but the vehicle went 20 ft before coming to a stop due to booster pump failur.

The brakes failed due to insufficient vacuum pressure under certain normal driving conditions.there is no brake power if the accelerator is open enough for the engine speed to reach 2500 rpm, during cold idle (after start up), frequently after rapid acceleration in an emergency situation where the brakes are then applied. Dealer agreed that this was a dangerous situation and replaced the brake booster (twice), brake master cylinder, and finally the entire engine. Condition remains the same. Dealer and ford engineer now state that it is operating as designed - evidently designed to fail in critical situations.

The contact owns a 2001 ford ranger. While the vehicle was parked in a parking lot, the contact noticed that parts of both the right and left side of the steering wheel were melted. The failure occurred without warning. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. 2001 ford ranger with 86866k.in around sept2010 i heard a thump and banging from the back. Upon home i looked under i saw that the shackle mount rotted and broke on the driver side. After i removed the shackle mount on the passenger side i saw rot through the frame as well heavy flakingrust thro-out the entire frame. I called ford and they said in a nut shell too bad.

I took my ford ranger to be inspected and was told the rear bumper mount had to be fixed due to rust. I made an appointment to get that fixed and when the garage that i took the truck to went to fix the that problem they told me they couldn't fix it because the rear frame was rotted. I had been running the truck before this problem arrived so now i have a vehicle with only 169000 miles on it and it wont pass inspection. The rest of the truck is in good condition. I have a g m c pick-up with 230500 miles on it and the frame is still good.the consumer requested an update. Updated 10/23/2017

Rear frame rails have rusted through in multiple areas. Right rear shock mount to frame has broken off and left a large hole in the frame rail. Right side rear frame rail has a large crack completely through it.

The spare tire mounted under the bed rusted off and fell off unto the highway.

Paint clear coat is chiping and peeling around most of the vehicle .

2001 ford ranger.consumer writes in regards to defective tire mount.the consumer stated the full sized spare tire on the truck, was mounted under the cargo bed. It was being held in place by a stranded steel cable, one end of which was attached to a swaged steel fitting which went through the central hole of the spare, the other end to a winch which lowered and raised the spare. Recently while driving, the consumer heard a thump and saw the spare tire had fallen out of its storage place and was sitting in the roadway behind him. When he inspected the mechanism, he found the swaged joint between the steel fitting and the cable had corroded and failed. Fortunately, when the failure occurred he was driving at a slow speed through a parking lot and no damage was done.

My 2001 ford ranger pickup with 89,000 mileswhich is always parked in the garage at night had both tailgate cables snap in the middle while my knees were on it. I was reaching for some groceries inside the canopy and both cables snapped, causing my knees to be hurt and my tailgate dented on the bumper. I went to gresham ford parts departmentand they told me it was common. I also read other peoples experience on the same issue.although the tailgate cables are covered in a rubber/plastic coating, the ends are open leaving water to access at these points and to pool in the middle when the tailgate is shut.thus leaving the braided cable to rust in the middle. It was suppose to hold 500 pounds of pressure and it broke on my 180 pound weight. It could have caused more injury if i had been standing or loading something heavier on the tailgate. Gm and chevy had a recall on this exact same issue. They replaced the cables with a sealed end.i called ford on nov 24, 2008 and they said that there wasn't any recall and couldn't help me. This problem needs to be fixed before someone else gets killed. I was injured and my truck has dents because ford refuses to address the issue. They could issue new cables during maintenance visits or inform owners before someone else gets hurt.

I bought my ranger 12 months ago. 6 months ago i noticed the bed of the truck was starting to lean to the left. Also the spare tire came up missing. I thought it was stlolen but upon inspection it had simply rusted the holder under the truck and fallen off. 3 months ago the truck started making a grinding noise upon braking. The right front a arm had rusted and broken off the frame. A mechanic had to weld a piece of metal to the frame because there was nothing to weld to. Then i finally decided to look under the truck and was shocked at what i found. The bed floor was nearly non excistant. Rusted almost completely gone. The spring shackle on the right which is attached to frame with a bracket were sticking up against the bed liner, the bracket completely gone. The tube that holds the right shock absorber is completely rusted off, the shock absorber just hanging there. Mechanics have told me theres no way to repair because theres no viable metal left to weld to. Its simply rusted away. So now im left with over 3 more years of car payments on a vehicle that's useless. I will upload pictures as soon as i can. Thank you. Went to have the truck inspected when they notice that where the spare tire went it was rusted through. This was all noticed when the truck was sitting still being inspected

Rusty frame,

Rear leaf spring hangers failed & separated from the frame due to corrosion causing the leaf spring to damage the bed of the truck as the leaf spring drove through the skin of the truck bed.

Rear spring shackles rusted so bad they broke apart and started to come through the cargo bed. Now the entire rear section of the frame is so rusted i am afraid to use the trailer hitch. Front section is also severely rusted. This truck only has 55000 miles on it and i am afraid to drive it. I have owned fords all my life and have never had an issue like this before. I can understand some boy panel rust, but to have the frame completely disintegrate is totally unacceptable. Ford needs to be required to fix these trucks or buy them back at a fair market value.

The contact owns a 2001 ford ranger. While driving, one of the vehicle's spare tires and half of the rear bumper detached from the vehicle. Upon further inspection, the contact noticed that the front frame was rotted. The contact stated that the vehicle was diagnosed by an independent mechanic who stated that the front frame needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The dealer was not contacted. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 80,000.

The contact owns a 2001 ford ranger. While servicing the vehicle, the contact noticed that the frame was corroded and fractured. In addition, the suspension was corroded. The vehicle was unsafe to drive. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 58,000.

Frame has excessive rust/corrosion.

The contact owns a 2001 ford ranger. The contact stated that upon inspection, it was found that the frame was severely rusted. The vehicle was taken to a private mechanic who confirmed that the frame was perforated due to rust. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was 151,238.

Noticed my truck was sitting crooked. Took it to repair shop to have repaired. About 2 hours after i dropped it off the repair shop called my phone and asked me to come to their shop. The mechanic showed me the rusted spring shackles and rusted spring hangers and the rusted frame. This shop would not put my trailer hitch back on because he said my rusty frame would not hold it up. I took my truck back to a ford dealer for them to look at. They told me that the truck was paid for, warranty was out and as far as they were concerned the problem was mine. I tried to tell the dealer that this didn,t happen overnight. He didn,t care. I have had parts of the frame plated so it wouldn,t break into. Gas tank brackets have rusted off. Main front crossmember has rust holes in it. This truck was only 7 years old and its junk. Tried to trade it off at a dealer first thing they look at is the frame. The dealers know there is a problem with the frames rusting. And mine is not the only one in the area with rusted frame problems. My son has a 2004 ford thats almost as bad as mine. I have a 1955 ford truck that has a better frame under it than my 2001. Sad but true. I took excellent care of my truck for those first 7 years but who crawls under their car or truck to check for rust. You expect some but not to this extent.

Rear frame on ranger is rusting.the slot where the gas tank strap hooks on to the frame has rusted awaythis caused the gas tank to dropthe whole back frame looks bad.

The consumer stated that the roof insulation appeared to be coming loose or was missing a piece.

Bought a used 2001 ford ranger after driving it for a month or so shocks were really bad looked underneath to find two clean cracks through from near back shocks not sure if bad shocks are to blame or weak frame

Was changing a broken adjuster on rear brakes and noticed the frame at the rear shock mount has large cracks in it on both sides. The concern is the stress placed on the cracked frame as that is where most of the strain is placed. That portion of the frame has a bunch of rust causing the metal to pit and likely weaken. I'm speculating that the metal used was inferior or that the shock plate was mounted in wrong location. The frame will require welding which will not be as strong.

Failed nys inspection due to structural cracks in frame.additionally the bracket holding one of the fuel tank straps was completely rotted away leaving the tank suspended by only one strap.

The contact owns a 2001 ford ranger. After examining the vehicle, the contact noticed that the entire frame and sub frame had cracked and rusted through. The vehicle was taken to a local mechanic on several occasions, where the leaf springs were replaced each time. The failure mileage was 110,000 and the current mileage was 140,000. The vin was unavailable.

The entire frame has rusted out.rear leaf springs frame cross members, cab mounts,i would never buy another ford.

These are pictures of the frame on my ranger. The frame is rusting out and it only has 76,619 miles on it. My mechanic found this when i was having the brake line repaired and he lifted the truck.

I noticed that there was significantly more rust than there should be. There are places where the frame has rusted through. It is a major safety concern. I researched the issue and found several others with the same concern. I also found that toyota has previously recalled several vehicles for the same issue.

All 4 rear shackles have been replaced due to rusting away. Also driverside rear shock where it attaches frame rusted off. The bed has rusted off of the front 2 bed mounts

Frame is rusting away. Both rear shock mounts. Gas tank holdingstraps.both chasis rails are rusting away with big chunks of steel falling off. Trans cross member rusting away

The contact owns a 2001 ford ranger. Upon inspection, the contact was informed that the vehicle frame experienced severe corrosion. As a result, the vehicle was no longer operable. The dealer was not contacted and the manufacturer was not notified. The failure mileage was approximately 82,000.

Entire frame rusted out-gas tank-rear shackles-bumper fell off.

Bought the truck and a few weeks of driving notice the bed was off center.put truck on life and found whole frame is rusted out.

The front cross frame has rusted to the point of being unsafe as has the rear

Chassisis severely rusted. You can break chunks of metal off with bare hands.both rear shock mounts have rusted off. Straps that hold gas tank have rusted through. Cross member holding tranny is severely rusted. Gas tank fill tube is severely rusted gas vapor return tube rusted off. Whole chassis.the whole frame is so rusted i am afraid to drive the truck.truck only has 155,000 on it and has always been maintained (have all service records)

Rear frame has rusted through. Rear driver side spring mount has rusted and broken from the frame. Rear bumper mounts and spare tire mounts are rusted out. Vehicle was stationary when problem was discovered .

Body frame rusted to the point i noticed the bumper was hanging down on drivers side, as i looked under the truck in my driveway i had seen the shackle was broken and the plate over the spare tire was cracked which could have cause the tire to fall out from under the truck or bumper which was not connected on drivers side because of rust also frame had to be repaired these are the repairs i had done, replaced rear frame section from rear axle snubbers to bumper, replaced rear shackles-replaced right side rear frame shackle mount repaired crossmember for gas tank right side-repair right front frame rail round contro; arm to trans crossmember cost with labor $973.69

Back half of frame rust out crossmembers and gas tank bracket. Becomes unsafe

Takata recall. My vehicle was stationary when i got to work i nothing my rear bumper fell off with no given warning and i didn't hear it hit the ground i got home and looked under the frame and noticed the whole frame was rotten away and is not safe to drive

I bought this truck used. This is the first vehicle that i've had the frame rust out. I just had some work done to the truck and my mechanic said that a chunk of the frame fell off when he lifted the truck to do work to the brake lines. I've already had welding work done to the truck right after i bought it because it wasn't disclosed that the frame was rusting out. This has been an on going issue. The attached image is from when i had the welding work done the first time.

Serious structural frame rust affecting areas related to suspension (shocks, brackets/shackles of leaf spring) while the rest of the truck, including the body is generally unaffected by any serious rust.

Since i have owned the vehicle i have had many issues with the frame of my 2001 ford ranger edge.at one point i was driving down the road and i heard a little noise so i stopped and the spare tire came rolling by me down the street. One of my leaf springs cracked so i had my mechanic check it out and he said the frame was all rotted out and that this was very common for this year ranger. He said the shackles that hold on the leaf sprig were broken because of rot. So he braced up some areas with metal and installed new leaf springs and shackles. The bed of the truck is tilted because of the frame. I cant give you an exactdate that this first happened but i believe it is around the date i put down. I get nervous towing my boat or my pop up trailer because of the frame.

I bought this 2001 ford ranger edge, regular cab from a dealer in connecticut.the exterior body panels themselves looks immaculate not a spot of rust anywhere, however, after i had driven home the vehicle and had my family mechanic look it over he discovered there are two locations where the frame has completely rusted/ rotted through (over 2 inches in diameter) on the driver side of the vehicle just in front of the rear axle, adjacent to the gas tank.this vehicle only has 89,000 miles on it and was very well cared for.this mechanic then told me that this will eventually lead to this vehicle being unsafe to drive and that the vehicle is borderline unsafe to drive in its current condition.

The contact owns a 2001 ford ranger. The contact stated that the rear frame was completely corroded. The vehicle was taken to a local mechanic who advised that the material used to build the frame was defective. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure who did not offer any assistance. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and the current mileage was 120,000.

Rear leaf spring bracket hasexsessive amout of rust and will break off.

The frame rusted out and bent out of shape in the rear end.

The contact owns a 2001 ford ranger. While driving 25 mph over a railroad track, the spare tire loosened from the vehicle without warning. The contact pulled the vehicle over to the shoulder of the road, looked underneath, and noticed nothing but rust where the frame for the spare tire was located. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The dealer and manufacturer were not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 136,092.

Frame supporting spare tire carrier fell off causing spare to drag. Also have in the past had both rear leaf spring mountsand shackles break off the frame to excessive rot.

I purchased a 2001 ford ranger xlt two years ago and when i went to get a sticker on it last year i had to put a lot of money into having part of the frame replaced due to rot. This year i took it to quirk ford in augusta to see what it would need before my sticker and was told that even if i get the basic regular maintenance done to get a sticker ($3k) it would never get a sticker again due to the rot in the rocker panels and the frame. I've contacted ford as it is only 8 years old and shouldn't be in that condition. They will do nothing about it. I am stuck with paying the remainder $5800 i owe on the vehicle and i can't get out of it due to the negative equity because of the condition the vehicle is in. I am the only source of income for our family of 3 right now and i can't afford to make two vehicle payments. I live too far from work to walk. It really upsets me that i'm stuck with no options for an issue that shouldn't even be. Isn't there something that can be done about this??

2001 ford ranger frame is rusted out bad. There should be a recall on this since so many people are having the same problem. Ford should be ashamed of themselves for making a vehicle that the frame only lasts 15 to 17 years!

Frame is rusted badly at points where control arm connects to frame and cross members where holds gas tank. Body is in perfect condition and only issue is in the frame . It's unsafe to drive any longer. If control arm breaks off the frame could cause serious injury or death to passengers and others on highway.

The salt on the roads rusted the frame horribly causing holes and weak points through the body.

Frame was noted to have severe rust damage to rear portion of frame, however, the front portion ofthe frame does not show such damage.i have done research on this issue and it seems to be so common that there is an after market frame repair kit for this specific vehicle. The truck has no other issues.i believe that it sould not be much to ask to have defect repaired by the manufacturer to avoid safety issues.

Sparetire assembly rusted completely tire and full assembly fell off onon highwaycreated a hazard and almost an accident. The truck was in motion doing about 50 mph.

Undercarriage and frame has excessive rust problems causing parts on frame to fail and fall off.

I purchased a used 2001 ford ranger, went to have it inspected and there was severe rust underneath of the frame to the point the inspector said it was highly dangerous to be driving my vehicle around. Would like to know if there was any recalls for the trucks frame underneath? will provide pictures if needed.

Ford made a extended cab with back doors.by ford eliminating the b-pillar or post. Front door is just latch to the rear door without a post to support it.which can result in minimal strength and protection against side impacts.*jg

The contact owns a 2001 ford ranger. The doors warning lights remained illuminated indicating that the door was ajar.the ford dealer was called and stated that they are not repairing the vehicle because there wereno recalls or valid warranties related to the failure. A local mechanic repaired the vehicle. The failure mileage was 34,000 and the current mileage was 170,000.

The door gaskets aren't well adjusted causing water, snow and dust to get on the seats.

On march 22nd, 2004 mclean ford service department in pine plains, ny replaced the roof support on my ford ranger 2001, which was cracked. Today, december 19th 2004, i went to mclean ford service department where they determined that the roof support has again cracked.the initial repair was done under the 36k miles/36 months original warranty.mclean ford service department is saying that it is not under the 12k mi/12 months parts and service warranty, since it was done under the original warranty and it does not extend beyond it.since the roof support has cracked again i consider this a part defect, but neither the dealership or ford co. Wants to acknowledge this.

B pillar roof support structure missing.

Both tailgate support cables broke and dropped me about 6 inches as i was sitting on the tailgate, 10-6-2007.

Both tailate cables on a 2001 ford ranger truck broke while my husband was on the tailgate a few months ago.minor injuries, but could have been serious!gm is not the only company with faulty tailgate cables!we replaced the cables at our own cost.

Dt*:the contact stated the passenger side seat belt releases from the buckle without warning.additionally, the tailgate cable on the driver's side broke while attempting to open the tailgate.the vehicle has not been inspected by the dealer; however the manufacturer was alerted.

The frame on my 2001 ford ranger has completely rusted through just in front of the rear springs on the drivers side. The truck only has 80,000 miles on it and is otherwise in excellent shape. There is no rust on the body. It is now unsafe to drive.

Rear portion of frame and leaf spring brackets rotted frame has rotted through.

I have a 2001 ranger edgeand the bumper mounts . Rear shacklesand support plates that hold shackle have completely rusted and now the springs are sitting up against the bed of the truck also where the support plate mounts to the chassis there are huge rust holes so it can not be repaired . This truck is only 10 years old!!!! what can be done.

2001 ford ranger 2wd 52k miles.rear frame rotted through at leaf spring brackets. Leaf spring brackets and shackles rotted apart from frame. Crossmember at fuel tank rotted through.spare tire crossmember rotted.major safety issuethis may be related to road salt use but my other (older) vehicles never rotted out to this extent.not sure what my final fix will be yet, but it will involve some patching and welding.would like to replace frame, or at least back half of frame to feel confident that vehicle will be safe and last long enough to reach 100k miles.disappointing failure from an american manufacturer.

The frame on my 2001 ford ranger has rotted away. It has been deemed unsafe to drive by my state inspection center. I have been driving this truck with my children in it and it has been unsafe for quite a while without me knowing it.. It only has 95,000 miles and is now unusable. It is the truck i use for my carpentry work and i am now out of work.

The contact owns a 2001 ford ranger. The contact stated that several portions of the frame, fuel system, and brake drums were rusted. Both the rear and front ends of the frame were suffering from severe rusting and the fuel filler pipe was also rusted. In addition, the cross member was also rusted. Door swellings started then a long list from the body frame to engine and transmissionfaliure occures when the tempature changes vehicle was leased brand new!!!!!!!

I have a 2001 ford ranger and have a really bad rusting issue on the rear frame.the front half seems fine but the rear half is rusting really bad and i fear that since i have had large chunks of rusted metal fall off that more critical parts may be weakened by the bad rust.i belong to a ranger forum and know that many have the same issue as me.

2001 ford ranger 4x4 extended cab - frame is completely rusted out in the rear and has holes rusted through in the front where suspension parts are mounted. Frame rusted out completely at rear spring mounts they broke loose went up and hit bed one side poked hole in bed. I called ford and asked if they would do anything about it as toyota has recently recalled trucks that have the same problem. They said they were not. If i would have been driving 70 mph on an interstate when the rear brackets broke loose someone could have been killed. This is a serious problem and should be addressed as toyota has.

The contact owns a 2001 ford ranger. The contact noticed that the frame was rusted. Both the dealer and manufacturer were informed who advised the contact that there were no related recalls and offered no additional assistance. A privatemechanic inspected the vehicle and stated that the frame completely corroded. The vehicle had not been repaired. The current and failure mileages were 57,000.

Rust on the frame of my truck has resulted in the truck need a new frame or i will have to junk the truck. Started in 2009 the bumper fell off and i had to put steel on the end of the frame to support the bumper . In 2010 the spring hanger broke and i was told that the frame was gone , from the back wheels to the bumper.

The contact owns a 2001 ford ranger. The contact detected that the main frame exhibited large holes, broke and was covered with an excessive amount of rust. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for inspection. The technician stated that the frame was faulty and poorly designed. The rear spring mounts were replaced as a result of the rust corrosion. The failure mileage was 83,000.

The contact owns a 2001 ford ranger. The contact stated that while inspecting the vehicle, it was discovered that the rear leaf spring shackles had rusted and separated from the sub frame and punctured through the bed of the truck. The cause of the failure was not diagnosed or repaired. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was indicated that the sub frame was so severely rusted it would not pass inspection. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 140,000.

I have a 2001 ford ranger, which now has 96000 miles on it.i purchased it new.at approximately 90000 miles, the rear spring shackles rotted off of the frame.i was driving when this happened, and the truck bed dropped down on to the shackle ear with a tu=hud and shook the truck.the spare tire storage housing has also rusted away.

The contact owns a 2001 ford ranger. The contact stated that after placing tags on the vehicle, she noticed that the frame was severley rusted. Went to rear of truck and found bumper had broken free on the drivers side. Looked under the tuck and found that the entire frame in the rear is rotted and the leaf springs are in danger of coming completely off. The bumper is entirely free from the truck. The passenger side of the frame directly over the tire is cracked completely through. This is the worst frame i have ever seen and have lived through the 70's american car manufacturers mess.

I have a 2001 ford ranger 4x4. The frame is rusted and has rot all over it. The truck was just sitting in my driveway over night, i came out to go clean my truck and the spare tire was on the ground. I take such good care of my truck, but the rear end is just killing me. Please help if you can.-thank you,[xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

My 2001 ford ranger xlt displays a rusting frame that is not in line with the mileage or condition of the vehicle.the bracket holding the rear leaf spring has rusted and broken loose, allowing the spring to rest against the bottom of the bed of the truck.this is the 2nd bracket to rust completely thru, and again, as stated, the frame shows signs of severe degradation.

I went to a auto body shop to get a estimate on some minor body work, during the inspection process the auto body rep found the frame to the rear of the rear tires was completely rusted through on the drivers side to the point the rear spring shackle was the only item holding the axle in place. Upon checking the complete frame he determined the complete frame was rusted away to the point he recommended the vehicle not be driven. Ford also discontinued this frame so i can not purchase another frame and rebuild the truck on a new frame. Note this truck was rarely used in the winter and was washed often. Previously a fuel line had to be replaced due to rusting in 2004, which i reported to the nhtsa and never heard anything back regarding that complaint.

I attached a yard trailer to the receiver hitch and as i pulled out of the yard the hitch pulled right off the back of the truck. I looked under the truck and saw about a foot of the rear frame rails were completely rusted away on both sides. Both rear leaf spring mounts were broken away and the springs were pushed up onto the bed of the truck.this truck has less than 60,000 miles on it and no apparent rust.if this had happened on the highway the trailer would have gone sailing down the highway possiblycausing an accident.both rear springs detached from the frame and if i had been on the highway, there is a good chance i would have lost control of the truck.

Passenger side rear spring shackle bracket rusted and broke off of frame. Frame, especially near rear of truck, is badly rusted.

The rear leaf spring mounts, shackles and frame where it mounts have rotted through resulting in the leaf spring breaking loose from the frame. Also, the front cross member of the frame is disintegrating and shows signs of imminent failure.

This vehicle has less than 100k miles on it and i've already had to repair the frame multiple times.the first incident was the cross members in the rear rusting off.the next incident was the frame breaking behind the drivers side bed between the shackles.i could literally flex the frame 4 inches up and down at the pivot point.i found this break while parked but had to miss class because of the severity of the frame.my trip to school has many sharp off ramps where high speed traffic and braking occurs.i'm certain if i had driven to school that day i could have been killed.while repairing this break i found where previous owners had fixed the rear bumper mounts and rear cross member.after taking my truck in to replace the tires, i was informed of yet another major frame issue.underneath the drivers seat on the frame is a huge rusted hole with a crack starting to form down the center of the rail.this will need repairing immediately.this being my first ford vehicle, i am extremely reluctant to buy a ford ever again.i could understand if the truck had 150k+ miles but it still has less than 100k miles.i owned a 1992 chevy s10five years ago and it had almost no rust on the frame even though it was an out door truck.ford needs to do something about this before someone is killed.

The contact owns a 2001 ford ranger. The contact stated that there was an abnormal noise coming from the rear of the vehicle. After servicing the vehicle, the contact discovered that the rear driver side frame was rusted and cracked. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 190,389.updated 6/8/15

Rear of frame hasrusted away. Rear bumper is ready to fall off. Left spring up against bed floor. This truck has the original exhaust on it no other problems ever i use ford 5w20 syn. Blend oil, changed every 3,000 miles. Guess i wasted all that money?? i get 24 miles to the gal. Highway. Now i cant take it there. Still looks good setting in my driveway. I am 68 yrs.old, my only veh. No money for another vec. Now what???? thanks for letting me ramble.........[xxx]information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

Rear wheel assembly (wheels, axle, leaf-springs) became detached from frame due to severe and premature frame and leaf-spring bracket corrosion (failure caused abrupt pull to center of highway at speed, fortunately no accident, since i am a pretty good driver). Subsequent inspection revealed extensive corrosion associated with vehicle frame and critical suspension components. Leaf spring brackets and various other suspension components noted to be manufactured from ultra-low carbon steel (known to turn to dust when exposed to weather). Vehicle is a 2001 with only 113,000 miles; truck is basically junk at this point with no chance of replacing the numerous components effected. I replaced the leaf-spring brackets; however i am fearful to drive the vehicle since it may kill me. Good job ford instilling customer safety, satisfaction and quality engineering. Hope the few bucks you saved by usingsub-standard materials on critical suspension components was worth it. I guarantee my family will never purchase another ford product.-husband, father of two...

Right rear is two inches lower than left side, frame is rusted through.

While driving along the interstate i-65 my rear frame fell off along with the spare tire it was due to rust on the frameit also took the rear leaf spring shackles on both sides causing the springs to penetrate through the floor of the pick up bedi hear tell this american made truck has a frame that was made in japan. Knowingly if the frame was made in the usa it would of had copper in the blend of steel which slows the problem of decay by rust. It would be unheard of if ford declines to recall these defected frames for who does clean the pockets of the frames on their personal vehicles?

I own a ford ranger and the frame where the leaf springs attach has completely rotted out!is there anything i can do?

Front wheel driver's side just fell off the frame due to extensive rust. Wheel is hanging by the spring only. Inspection of the entire frame shows very extensive rust and it looks like swiss cheese.

Failed component 2: frame ahead of leaf spring shackles on both sides.left was completely fractured and right was 1/2 fractured.right shock strut mount broken.driving around town hit several bumps in road due to road construction.when i parked the truck i noticed the truck bed was leaning to the right.further inspection revealed a cracked frame. Took it to the shop and they said it wasn't safe to drive.they removed the bed and noticed extreme rust and a 'paper thin' frame.. Said it would be difficult to find good metal to weld to.i noticed that ford had a recall on the 2004 ranger frame.

Framein rear of truck rusted badly, rear shackle mount o pass side extremely bad with holes completely through the frame in multiple places. Rear tire carrier completely unusable.

2001 ford ranger was taken into auto shop for routine maintenance. The mechanic inspected the vehicle and found the rear spring shackles and the frame rotted and about ready to fail completely. The springs were found to be pressing up on the bottom of the frame. Also noted bumper was about ready to fall off. All of this due to severe corrosion of the frame. No maintenance was performed on the vehicle and a recommendation from the mechanic to remove the vehicle from the road was advised.

I took my truck in for tire repair and service technician found severe rotting where leaf springs are supposed to be connected to the frame.there was a total disconnect at this location which explains the loud banging that i've been hearing.this is on the drivers side.he advised me that on the passenger side, it was the same situation but it wasn't disconnected yet.he advised me ford rangers have a problem with this.i went online and discovered a huge volume of complaints regarding this same issue.some complaints said that they were driving when their truck bed gave way and collapsed while in the truck was in motion.this truck was handed down with low mileage and little reason for all that rust/rotting in the frame of the truck.i was advised that had i been carrying a medium or heavy load the bed could have given way, and that could have been in motion.

My frame has corroded to the point that it is unsafe to drive. Mostly all of my undercarriage bolts and supports have rotted through the frame that there is not enough frame metal to make appropriate repairs> including gas tank filler pipe, gas tank support straps, shock supports, muffler mounts, side step ups, and side panel: brackets. This truck has not been abused and i feel a frame should last more than 13 years.

Severely rusted frame rails, rear bumper in danger of falling off of vehicle!!i just arrived back in massachussetts from winter in south carolina, started to prepare my ford ranger to go back on the road, observed that the rear bumper appeared to be hanging lower than normal. I tugged on the rear bumper and found that i could easily move it up or down, crawled under the vehicle and observed that the rear frame rails were so rusted that the bumper is in danger of falling off of the vehicle, spare wheel well and lifting mechanism are severely rusted as well.

I had my truck serviced and the mechanic said the left front frame holding the suspension was rusted.

Frame is rotted everywhere for the most part spare tire is about to fail off isn't safe to haul anything in the bed

Dt:the caller said both front ball joints were defective.the vehicle was makingnoises in the front end.this was the only indication that something was wrong.the dealer told the consumer that there was nothing wrong with the vehicle.an independent mechanic told the consumer that the ball joints were bad.the mechanic told him that the ball joints should not go bad at that mileage.the manufacturer offered no help.the consumer did not know if the problem was with the lower joints.(11/15/05)the noise was coming from the drivers side front tire.the consumer was informed that the noise was coming from both ball joints and the cv joint.*sc

Takata recall. My vehicle was stationary when i got to work i nothing my rear bumper fell off with no given warning and i didn't hear it hit the ground i got home and looked under the frame and noticed the whole frame was rotten away and is not safe to drive

I brought my 2001 ford ranger in for it's annual new york inspection.the inspector pointed out that the frame was dangerously weak due to rust by the rear shackle brackets which the leaf spring is attached to.i had these brackets replaced a few years early because one rusted out and broke.i would hat to think what would have happened if my frame failed while on a interstate at 65 mph.i am 63 years old and never did i have a frame rust out.i took the car to a shop which welded new steel on the frame both sides.

The spare tire rusted off and fell of when driving and shock mounts also broke due to rust.

The gas tank support which was a part of the frame rusted off.

Serious structural frame rust affecting areas related to suspension (shocks, brackets/shackles of leaf spring) while the rest of the truck, including the body is generally unaffected by any serious rust.

Took truck in for service and was told the spring shackles were rusted and had to be replaced.

Undercarriage and frame has excessive rust problems causing parts on frame to fail and fall off.

Rear frame on ranger is rusting.the slot where the gas tank strap hooks on to the frame has rusted awaythis caused the gas tank to dropthe whole back frame looks bad.

Truck has 86,000 and looks like brand new condition, however, the frame is badly rusted, our auto mechanic has told me that the trucks life is coming to an end. Contacted ford and they said there is an ongoing investigation and they can not comment at this time. I asked if they would help pay for a frame replacement which they declined.

The rear leaf spring mounts, shackles and frame where it mounts have rotted through resulting in the leaf spring breaking loose from the frame. Also, the front cross member of the frame is disintegrating and shows signs of imminent failure.

Frame rusted to the point of breaking.

The right rear leaf spring shackel broke off from the frame due to rust. The spare tire carrier failed due torust and caused the spare tire to drop. The steel shield under the gas tank dropped down due to rust.

When going to install trailer hitch i found that spring and shackle brackets are about to fall off due to severe rust perforation.also bumper brackets are compromised by severe rust perforation as well as entire spare tire compartment. I have found several forums where the same complaint has been reported and i feel it is a safety hazard due to manufacture of the frame metal.i am concerned that my bumper is going to come off while driving or spare tire or leaf spring shackles causing an accident. Surface rust is expected but total perforation of metal from rust on vehicle this old is not acceptable and is a defect in the metal.

Rear frame has rusted through. Rear driver side spring mount has rusted and broken from the frame. Rear bumper mounts and spare tire mounts are rusted out. Vehicle was stationary when problem was discovered .

Bought a used 2001 ford ranger after driving it for a month or so shocks were really bad looked underneath to find two clean cracks through from near back shocks not sure if bad shocks are to blame or weak frame

Frame rusted even thou we paid for undercoating no accident trying to prevent accident without scraping the vehicle can send pictures, but this form does not work

While inspecting my vehicle before attempting to repair the bracket on the exhaust when i noticed large chips of rust and decay on the entire frame of the vehicle while the body and engine bay are completely un damaged, the rust on my vehicle is far worse then should be on my vehicle with less then 100,000 miles.

I own a 2001 4x4 ford ranger xlt. Body, interior perfect condition. Always garaged, just over 100k miles won't pass inspection. Frame rotted out! ford should replace this frame or buy back the truck. It is useless to me in this condition. I was told that repairs could cost up to $2000 or more. I feel ripped offby ford motor company. This is my last ford.

The contact owns a 2001 ford ranger. The contact stated that the vehicle made a noise by the wheel bearing. The contact took the vehicle to a certified mechanic and was informed that the wheel bearing needed to be replaced. The certified mechanic also stated that the frame and the leaf springs were severely rusted, causing the leaf springs to detach. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failures. The approximate failure mileage was 182,000.

Thank you.

No maintenance was performed on the vehicle and a recommendation from the mechanic to remove the vehicle from the road was advised.

The problem is a non-compliance of the installed springs and shocks assembly.the whole truck bounces over a bump instead of the suspension compressing and absorbing the shock.the results are that the back end of the truck bounces to the right or left and makes me almost lose control of the vehicle.the vehicle ended up on two wheels on one occasion and almost rolled over.the vehicle finally settled back down on all four wheels and i was able to continue on my way.

Passenger side rear spring shackle bracket rusted and broke off of frame. Frame, especially near rear of truck, is badly rusted.

The driver's side rear shackle welds broke for the leafspring support.it made a clunking noise, so i checked it & seen that it was broke. Were then i noticed the truck box being lifted on that side.

Entire frame rusted out-gas tank-rear shackles-bumper fell off.

Rear frame rails have rusted through in multiple areas. Right rear shock mount to frame has broken off and left a large hole in the frame rail. Right side rear frame rail has a large crack completely through it.

Sparetire assembly rusted completely tire and full assembly fell off onon highwaycreated a hazard and almost an accident. The truck was in motion doing about 50 mph.

Rear leaf spring bracket hasexsessive amout of rust and will break off.

I had my truck serviced and the mechanic said the left front frame holding the suspension was rusted.

Severe rust on frame. Rear spring hangers broke. Spare tire holder rottedand needed to be removed. Cracked frame behind front spring hanger of right rear spring. Driveline in good condition as was the rest of the body.

Frame rusted in several places behind the cab at the rear spring shackles. Frame cracked both sides and bed is up against the cab and ready to break intwo. Ford will not do anything. 145 k miles and the rest of the truck is in very good shape everything works except the cruise and is a loaded edgeā€¦..very upset just had a transmission rebuilt in it. Love the truck all the one i have looked at have the same issues over several years on fb marketplace and cannot find a good frame in any salvage yard. Didnā€™t toyotaā€™s have the same issues and they had a recall. Why doesnā€™t ford have one? call ford directly and they wonā€™t do a thing. Tried selling as is and replacing but canā€™t get a buyer for what i have in the truck. Trying to find a good frame to fix it now, but there are none out there. Very dissatisfied.

While driving vehicle would start to vibrate/ shimmy, higher the speed shimmying would be worse, consumer wouldgrip steering wheel, and would behard to maintain control, had taken vehicle to two different dealerships, each mechanic just rotated the tires, this failed to correct the problem. Goodyear replaced all four tires. Rts wrangler p235/75r15)

Front wheel driver's side just fell off the frame due to extensive rust. Wheel is hanging by the spring only. Inspection of the entire frame shows very extensive rust and it looks like swiss cheese.

This is in addition to a previous complaint that i filed earlier today. I own a 2001 ford ranger 4x4 xlt. Body and interior all perfect. No rust on body. Frame is rusted through in back of area that rear shackles are attached to. Shackles themselves have been replaced two years ago. Truck will not pass inspection and i am told cost of repairs could be around $2000 or more. The mileage on this truck is just over 100k. I am very disappointed in ford motor company. I've owned many ford vehicles, some a lot older than this truck and never experienced anything like this.

At 6k mi while making right turns at speeds 30 mph and lower, there was a distinct vibration in the front end.ford replaced the steering rack.now at 23k mi same exact problem is back.

Right rear is two inches lower than left side, frame is rusted through.

Vehicle wanders and it is difficult to control, the rear end has excessive roll at highway use, lack of control exist when the road conditions change.

During my annual inspection it was noted that the rear leaf spring bracket was rusted off and part of the frame had rusted away.would not pass safety inspection....

While driving 57-67 mph there is a constant vibration. Engineer from ford stated it was a characteristic of the truck.ford recommended and installed new goodyear wrangler tires on vehicle.

Rear leaf spring hangers failed & separated from the frame due to corrosion causing the leaf spring to damage the bed of the truck as the leaf spring drove through the skin of the truck bed.

Frist, rear spring shackles rusted through had to be replaced, now rear frame where the shock tower hooks up is completely rusted through ( frame is severely rusted to on safe condition )in motion heard a loud rattle pulled over to see what it was .we have pictures but could not download them on this form.

I own a ford ranger and the frame where the leaf springs attach has completely rotted out!is there anything i can do?

All 4 rear shackles have been replaced due to rusting away. Also driverside rear shock where it attaches frame rusted off. The bed has rusted off of the front 2 bed mounts

The frame on this truck has rusted to the point where it is unsafe to drive.the rear bumper actually fell of the vehicle while it was being driven.i took off the bed and cut off the rear part of the frame and welded on a newrear section and put on new leaf spring hangers and re installed the bumper a few years ago and re coated the frame with paint but now it has gotten worse to the point where i can no longer drive it as there are actual holes rusted thru.it needs a frame replacement or it just a parts vehicle.

A piece of tire flew off and made a loud thud sound in the wheel-well.tire then began to fly apart while driving at 65mph.truck began to swerve off the road when i began to apply the brakes.tire came off the rim before we could stop.bell ford and firestone dealer told me the tire was not under warranty as it happened while i was driving the vehicle.they called it a "road hazard.""hazardous tires" would be more accurate.another couple brought in a tire just like ours with the same problem.we were both turned away.we have replaced all five tires on the vehicle because of the nature of the situation and the danger we felt.i have had flat tires on the freeway before, but i have never had a tire disintegrate into hundreds of pieces or come off the rim like that.please advice nhtsa of poor quality of this firestone product which ford motor company uses on their new vehicles.thank you for your help to the comsumers. Vehicle is pulling to the right side.right/front tire feelsas if it is going to buckle up undervehicle. Please provide any further information.

While traveling up hill and making turns consumer noticed steering wheel vibrating. Dealer has been contacted. Dealerencouragedconsumer to put more miles on vehicle. Vehicle has rough idle when waiting for a light or a stop sign,it doesn't matter if it is in gear or not.

Consumer stated thatfront end is wearing. Dealer notified.

I have a 2001 ford ranger 4x that is mainly used for driving to work.it is only taken off the pavement to unload materials or remove wood, etc from the back of my property.i had new tires put on at 75,000 miles and was told that i needed wheel alignment.since i questioned this, i took it to the dealer for the alignment.they told me that my ball joints needed replacement for $500, which i also doubted.i told them to do the alignment but not the ball joint replacement.i have had no reason to suspect that the ball joints are bad but if they are then i would like to have them replaced.i am 65 and have gone through a lot of cars.i have had some for nearly 200,000 miles but this is the first time that i have been told that the ball joints need replacement.i have contacted ford and they provided not help.they said to take it to a dealer and that they will probably charge me to look at it.

I have a ford ranger edge 2001. I purchased it jun 11 2003. Thank you. The vehicle came equipped with a spare tire that was not the same size of the tires that were already on the vehicle, also the spare tire does not fit properly under the vehicle, the tire binds up on boths sides and is within an inch of the exhaust pipe.

Sparetire is 15 inch, other 4 are 16 inch, and spare is not clearly marked as "temporary"creating potential unsafe and mechanically problematic situation if spare is installed for more than a short period/distance.

Spare tire is not the same size as regular tires, regular tires are size 24575r16, and spare tire size is 23575r15. Owners manual states that all tires should be the same size.

The consumers vehicle had 16 inch original wheels and tires, but the spare tire and wheel were only 15 inches.consumer feels this is illogical and could pose a serious problem.consumer thinks ford should correct the problem by mounting a 16 inch tire as a spare instead of the 15 inch.*jg

The spare tire mounted under the bed rusted off and fell off unto the highway.

My tires on the vehicle are 16" and the spare tire is 15" the problem is the spare tire being a smaller size than the others is that it can cause an accident or make the vehicle roll over or damage the differential of the vehicle i want to stress that this is not a "donut "tire. This is suppose to be a regular tire accoding to the owners manual if it was a "donut " it would be labeled as such it has no such markings. I contacted the dealer and the manufacturer and got the same answer from both that's the way you bought it that's the way it is so i assumed that they shipped out many vehicle that were equipped that same way it is a safety issue to not notify the owner but it will also in my opinion cause an accident ie.rollover vehicle parts failure thank you for your time please keep me notified of your findings. Thank you signed estel keefer.

The vehicle came equippedwith a "15" spare tire.if the tire was used with the 4 wheel drive engaged, it would put a bind on the axle and cause it to break.16 inch tires won't fit under the vehicle.the manufacturer was contacted.the consumer felt that the dealer should replace the tires with 15 inch tire and wheel with 16 inch tire and wheel.scc

The spare tire rusted off and fell of when driving and shock mounts also broke due to rust.

Consumer states that the spare tire is too small for vehicle. Dealer notified.

Rusty frame,

The frames on these vehicles are pure junk, they break usually on the drivers side right in front of the rear spring shackle or at it, mine is broke just in front of the rear spring shackle of the rear part of the frame. If you go searching for a frame, as i have, you will find almost all of these vehicles in description will say the frame is shot which is the case of most fords it seems anymore. It would have been a good truck if not for the frames rusting down and possibly causing someone to have an accident and lose their life over this if they don't keep check on these tucks. This truck was an every day work vehicle and i ended up having to park it and find another one before the chaos started with it.

The paint on the hood is cracking.

2001 ford ranger frame is rusted out bad. There should be a recall on this since so many people are having the same problem. Ford should be ashamed of themselves for making a vehicle that the frame only lasts 15 to 17 years!

Dt*: the contact stated while driving 15 mph on neighborhood streets, the spare tire fell from underneath the vehicle onto the road.the vehicle was driven to the dealer who determined the cable holding the spare tire fractured and needed to be replaced.updated 10/30/2006 - the spare tire was a full size spare, not a temporary spare.

While driving engine light came on. Driver noticed vehicle's timing was off,and it was losing power. Cause was unknown at this time.please provide any further information.

Had left work and driven approx. 12 miles driving on highway. While going through next town driving at approx. 35 mph, driver smelled smoke .proceeded approx. 3 city blocks and pulled vehicle over on side of road. Upon opening hood of truck, found engine engulfed in flames. Total loss of truck due to under hood fire.

I purchased a 2001 ford ranger edge, 4 door, 4 wheel drive pickup truck from the nykar store off of ebay motors in january. The ad falsely claimed that the vehicle was in great shape with no mechanical damage disclosed, but soon i discovered that the frame has severe rust damage that was covered up with filler and undercoating. The frame, where the control arms connect are so visible rusted around the mounting bolts that the holes are large enough to put my fingers through, at least once all of the flaking rust, filler and undercoating were removed. The truck is totaled. It will require a complete frame replacement which will cost more than the truck is worth. I purchased a truck that is totaled from a dishonest dealer, but the frame should not be rusted this bad. If i had hit a pot hole, one or both of the front tires could have sheered off and caused a serious accident or personal injury. Please advise me on the best course of action to take in this situation.

Frame is deteriorating due to severe rust.the rear bumper is also rusting away.i am afraid to haul heavy loads which could cause the frame to collapse.the step rails rusted so bad they had to be removed from the vehicle.the body and paint are in good condition.

Frame rot ,structural crack in left side rear, did not pass nys inspection

The frame just in front of the rear tires on both sides is getting thin with small holes in it. Also the crossmember behind the transfer case that holds the front gas tank support is rotted out pretty bad and should be replaced. The rear leaf spring shackles are getting pretty thin and will need to be replaced soon.

Frame is rotted everywhere for the most part spare tire is about to fail off isn't safe to haul anything in the bed

This was purchased in march 2016 at the time of inspection did not notice frame damage. Took to shop and was told frame is dangerously rusted. At further inspection frame is rusted through on the front right corner and mid section of truck. Truck has 131000

My client is scheduled to undergo 2 cervical fusions as aresult of a rear end motor vehicle crash. His ford ranger has no headrest as such but rather is designed with a glass partion to act as means for stopping head's movement. Amazing that ford "complied" with federal standards using glass partion. Who ever heard of a glass headrest?

The rear of the cab/front of bed at the frame has extensive rust. This causes the truck to sag badly and become unsafe

The gas tank support which was a part of the frame rusted off.

Back leaf spring rust out.

2001 ford ranger speed control did not work.because my truck was not on the recall list, the servo was replaced for $316.90.speed control light on dash never worked, blinking theft light blinks constantly, and a wiring odor is noticeable.after replacement of servo, the speed control still does not work. The truck has approx. 34000+ miles on it when it went into the garage for this work.my question is why, with so many apparent electrical problems, this truck was not put on the recall list?

I received a recall notice in august 2007 for a problem with the speed control deactivation switch on my 2001 ford ranger pick-up truck.the dealer does still not have the parts to fix the problem.this is not a reasonable time to have to wait for these parts.

In august i received a recall on my 2001 ford ranger. After 8 attempts to set up an appointment to have the fused wiring harness installed, which they never had in stock,i was told that they would disable my cruise control.i believe this in not a repair and is trading one problem, a possible fire. For another. I believe that a cruise control is a device to control speeding and a safety device.

While driving at 45 mph i slowed to make a right turn and almost went through the intersection into the woods. I thought that the truck might roll. Upon inspection, my left front tire was nearly flat. When i brought the wheel/tire to get it repaired i was told that the wheel had rusted through and the tire was okay. The folks at the wheel & tire place showed me how the wheel was designed to trap water and were very familiar with the problem. I notified ford, who ignored the design-flaw aspect, and told me i was out of luck since there was no safety recall. I hope that changes.
