Starting problems.*sd

Electrical system failure.

A short in ignition coil, resulted in an electrical fire.

Truck caught on fire for no reaosn. It was being warmed up.

While driving vehicle will stop, and there are no power brakes or power steering. Consumer took vehicle to deaelr, and they replaced parts for camshaft and distibutor . Second time a mechanic said it wassame problem, and that those parts that were replaced should neverhave been replaced unless there was a manufacturer's defect.

It is very hard to get the key into the ignition and hard to get key out of ignition. The ignition switch is very loose and moves in and out. The dealer has not been notified about the problem.

Ignition system died without warning, sensor and module failed

Electrical short or shock in the ignition switch, when you turn the switch off the switch stay on causing the battery to die.

Vehicle keeps engaging trying to start itself without a key.vehicle bounces forward until it hits something to stop it. Manufacturer, and dealer never heard ofproblem to find a remedy. Consumer added a toggle switch onwire that runs from solenoid relay tostarter to keep it from starting itself.

Vehicled had been parked for about 7 hours and engine caught onfire.fire inspector said itmay have been blower resistor.

Wiring harness shorted out.

When driving and upon turning the headlights on, the headlights will flash off and on for no apparent resason. Consumer has yet to contact the dealer. Please provide any further details.

Smoke odor from wiring harness, causing vehicle to fill with smoke/poor visibility. *sd

Short in steering column wiring causes turn signals to operate on an intermittent basis.*aw

While driving, smoke in passenger compartment, no interior lights or radio. Later discovered no stop lights or running lights. Replaced headlight switch and underdash fuses. Headlight switch burned and broken, vehicle headlight wire harness melted near one connector. Ford service shop had to replace headlight switch twice because of first replacement dimmer rheostat failure.

Vehicle continually experiences electrical problems causing light flickering, on two occasions the dashboard harness showed signs of melting and burning due to failure. *mjs

Had parked & left vehicle.windows were rolled up.vehicle caught on fire over night & was totaled.dashboard was burned badly.

Throttle stuck at high rpms and gas pedal stuck to the floorhad to turn off the ignition before it blew up my truck.this was supposed to have been repaired in january by ford in ventura and now it is happening again this has happened to so many rangers and one of us owners of will wind up killed.fix this please

The vehicle caught on fire while driving.the dealer had been notified.tswhen the consumer lifted the hood, he viewed the flames coming from the passenger side engine compartment.scc

-the contact's 1993 ford ranger caught on fire.there were no warnings prior to the incident. The contact was traveling approximately 65 mph with an odometer reading of 84000 at the time of the failure. The contact purchased the vehicle on 11/7/06 from a private owner.the throw-out bearing was replaced on 11/9/06. The road conditions were dry and clear.the vehicle sputtered sothe contact pulled off the highway. The vehicle lost power, and a fire started under the hood of the vehicle. Passenger compartment also caught on fire and was destroyed.updated 03/02/07.

Unexpected fire under hood after turning the defroster switch on.while driving in a parking garage my nephew who was driving at the time turned the defroster switch on and all of a sudden there was smoke bellowing out of the vents into the ford ranger pk/u cab.he pulled over to the side of the lot and someone ran up to him and told him to get out of the pk/u because he saw fire coming from under the hood.the guy was carrying a fire extinguished. He told my nephew to slowly lift the hood while he began to extinguish the fire under the hood.the flames where very intense that it melted the heater core cover, wiring, the a/c motor and fan and paint on the inside and out side of vehicle.it also melted the inside of the dash board where the on the other side would be your glove compartment.in the meantime nephew called 911 and fire dept was dispatched and they got there few minutes later and the fire had been put out already but as a precaution they foamed the car engine and unhooked the battery.he was told to not start the truck again and have it flat bedded to garage for inspection and possible repair.i called ford and they took report which will take 7-10 days to get inspector here in fl to look at vehicle.this was a 1993 ford ranger, 2 door, stand bed, 4cyl, manual.this truck just burst into flames with the only cause that mechanics have found so far was the motor burned from the inside out and heated so much that it melted the brackets holding in place and when it hit the heat core it melted it and also the fan motor is melted and adhered permanently to this heat core now on the outside.my brother owns this vehicle since i gave it to him 1 yr ago but they are still family and their safety is a concern to me.this should not have happened and this is as the mechanic claims almost 99% sure it is defective parts.the heat was so intensive even thought it was only for a few mins if that to due so much damage like it did.

Had to pay for a fix that ford knew about, tsb 21-16?, to stop a thumping sound in the passenger side floorboard.the dealer installed a vehicle bypass kit in the cooling system to stop the thumping sound in the passenger side floorboard.i paid $222 to fix a problem that ford should have fixed during a recall.it happened so much that they had a tsb on the problem and i found out the fix on fordranger.com.should this problem been fixed as a recall?

The engine oil seals in front and back leak significantly and the timing chain is affected.

Vehicle fire. *sd

Engined overheated ruined head, head now needs replaces

Windshield wipers do not work, especially in heavy rain; motor makes loud noise; also, exhaust system failed, catalytic converter caught fire;abs totally failed

Dealer refuse to correct the problem, recall #95s29

Truck went up in flames while it was parked. Source of fire unknown. Please describe.

The engine wires arch due to design causing vehicle to run rough.

Windshield wipers do not work, especially in heavy rain; motor makes loud noise; also, exhaust system failed, catalytic converter caught fire;abs totally failed

Consumer went to turnventilation fan onand smelled smokecoming from inside of vehicle.vehicle was on fire, fire department was called out.the fire started for the second time while the consumer was traveling home and damaged the vehicle completrly.

Car jack bent when it reached a certain height and stuck in position tt consumer states he had to physically get underneath the vehicle because placement required of jack to properly jack up vehicle, jack placement required by manufacturer is directly underneath vehicle.

3rd brake light (upper cab) has overheated and caused small fire in brake light housing.

Brake light switch broke for the second time and needs replacement. Dealer notified, and informed consumer that part was not covered under a manufacturer's recall. Cruise control does not turn off when brake engaged.

One lens of the fog lights fell off the vehicle while in motion, and the owner mistakenly ran over it. Dealer indicated that fog lights have to be replaced.

There is a lens on the vehicle that is called a fog lens cover that randomly falls off the vehicle at any given time.first the passenger side, then the driver side fog lenses fell off the vehicle.

While driving in the evening the lights started to blink off and on. Shortest duration about 2 seconds. Longest duration about 20 seconds with lights off resulting and my having to pull off to the side of the road without anylights at all. Hitting bumps doesn't seem to cause a problem, so i assume it isn't a loose component. This has happened many times since then on smooth dry pavement. It happens on highbeam and lowbeam. More often with highbeam on. I have also tested the problem sitting still in the driveway. The same thing happens. The problem seems to be getting progressively worse with time.

Headlight lens over time becomes less clear, to point that light output is decreased, presenting a safety hazard.local parts dealer said this is common in ranger and mustang, but i am noticing this with tarus also.dealer wants $120.00 + for each.considered a collison part.problem is part is made of plastic and sun must be destroying plastic.better when headlight lens were glass.

Rear brake lines rub on shock absorbers, not avoidable. Extreme wear evident.also, headlights flash uncontrolably, suspected headlight switch replacement.

1993 ford ranger fuel filler tube is made of steel and mounted so road salt can corrode it.fuel filler tube leaks gasoline on pavement every time i refuel.part is $429 plus install.leaking fuel at the gasoline station seems dangerous, would you agree?

Consumer drove pickup 2 wheel drive to store park it in a parking lot came back out to get in pickup was on fire. Tt

Noticedgasoline runs from under truck when tank is filled up with gas.on 11/30/2010, filler neck onfuel tank cracked profusely as well as fuel inductor line; fuel was pouring out under truck as i watched the gas gauge go from 1/4 of a tank full to empty in 2 seconds. Dealer indicates that original fuel inductor lines (that fits on top of tank)and tank are no longer available from ford dealer. Entire fuel system must be replaced.

Fuel filler neck has split at the tank connection bend. Fuel leaks profusely out of this split when tank is filled. When the tank reaches full capacity, the fuel filler outer hose fills up partially. The fuel in the outer hose then leaks out onto the tank and ground. I am repeating this claim for 2 separate vehicles, a '93 and a '94.

Defectve fuel inertia switch caused momentum to build enoughto flip truck over 5 times, coming to rest on its roof.

Cruise control engaged in fifth gear at 35mph, down shifted into second gear, depressed clutch to release the clutch, fuel shut off did not release impact 12:00

Gas leaking from 93 ford ranger after it is filled up with fuel.the hose around the filler neck is cracked.there is also a strong smell of fuel for a couple of days following filling up the vehicle.

While driving could smell gasoline fumes inside of vehicle.stopped vehicleandchecked beneathvehicle. Noticed fuel was leaking onground. Took to dealership, and mechanic noticedfuel tank was cracked which causedfuel to leak out.fuel tank was plastic , and mechanic replaced it with another type.

Fuel tank, made of plastic, causes fuel to leak out of the tank from the seams. Contactedmanufacturer & the dealer.

Leak developed due to crack in top of plastic fuel tank. Crack was located under support strap. Tanks are currently back ordered from factory which insinuates a problem may exist. Properly engineered and installed plastic components not exposed to uv or impact damage should not fail after seven years.

Plastic fuel tank spontaneously split at a seam near the top of the tank, dumping fuel into an attatched garage.there has never been any trauma to this vechicle.this resulted in a life threating situation for my family.fortunately, there was not an ignition agent present.please investage. I contacted ford and they did not seem to care.the cost to repair the defect was about $500.00.i still have the defective tank.

The fuel tank cracked on the upper portion of the tank in the area where the middle strap crossed the tank which was leaking fuel.gallons of fuel leaked as the consumer was driving.the dealer suggested that consumer replaced the fuel pump.the consumer obtained the defective fuel tank and found no problem with the fuel pump. *scc

Fuel tank crack on the upper portion of the tank in the area where the middle strap crosses the tank.contacted ford motor co., no recalls, therefore, no assistance with the purchase of a new fuel tank, only available from the manufacturer at $335.72.i have owned this truck since new, and it has never been abused or driven over rough terrain to warrant a fuel tank cracking and leaking.

Gas leaks from the filler neck and tank when refueling. The scent of gasoline lingers for a couple of days after fillup.the amount of fuel lost about 1/2 to 1 gallon.there is the potential for a possible fire since this occurs at the gas station, from static electricity or heat from the catalytic converter. This truck has never been involved in an accident or used off road.i am a personal friend of the original owner, who sold the truck to my brother whom i obtained the truck from.

The fuel tank was cracked on the side.

The fuel tank filler seal cracked, causing the fuel to leak out, almost causing a fire.cause unknown. Dealer cannot determine problem.

Neck on plastic fuel tank cracked - fuel leaking all under truck & on floor of garage. Problem was noticed when i started to move truck to go to work.after backing truck out of garage and seeing fuel on floor, i called a for a tow.dealer indicates that plastic fuel tank has cracked for no apparent reason.no indication of impact. Original fuel tank is nolonger availiable from ford.a new style (dealer indicates new style tank and fuel fill are required) repalcement is being ordered and installed by the dealer.what would make a fuel tank crack without some type of inpact? i looked under the truck and a large area of the underside was covered with fuel.i think i was lucky not to have a fire in my house when i started the truck.i had just filled up the tank and there was a circle of fuel about 2ft. Across on the floor of the garage.

While filling up gas tanka hose which is connected to the tank began to leak. Please provide any additional information.nlm

Gas leaking from 93 ford ranger after it is filled up with fuel.the hose around the filler neck is cracked.there is also a strong smell of fuel for a couple of days following filling up the vehicle.

Fuel tank replace due to leakage.believe that leakage was result of hole worn in plastic tank by metal holding strap.strap may have fitted too tightly by manufacturer.

My 1993 ford ranger 4wheel drive pick up suddenly started leaking gas. The dealership told me that the gas tank separated and thats what caused the leak. This vehicle is 4wheel drive, but i never take it off roads and i live in a very temperate climate (the bay area). We have no extreme cold or heat and i find it hard to believe this is normal. I want to make sure this is not some defect.

Gas tank cracked at 86000 miles can't hold more then half a tank.transmission wearing out and driven lightly never used the bed of truck to carry things mainly freeway miles

Passenger and driver door will stay locked, when locked doors will come open.tt

While drivinghood blew open due tohood latch being defective.

While driving on freeway, w/cause unknow hood latch failed, allowing hood to fly up, blocking drivers vision. Please describe details.

The contact owns 1993 ford ranger. While the vehicle was parked the contact tried to apply the parking brake and it would lock in place. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer to be repaired. The dealer was contacted and stated that there was a recall on that year, make and model but his vehicle was not included. The approximate failure mileage was 130,000.

The parking brake has continually failed to engage and slips when attempting to engage the brake foot pedal.it was worked on previously when the truck was still under warranty.noticing the nhtsa site this apparently is a problem with all rangers.i believe a wedge was put in my truck at gateway lincoln-mercury, but this has not solved the problem.

Parking brake does not hold on steep inclines.nlm

Dt: a recall wa sissuedbut this vehiclewasnot included due to vin.whenapplying emergency brake it didn't work and it allowed the vehicle to roll freely. This was for a manuel transmission when parking on a hill.had to leave the gear and turn the wheels depending onwhich way parked. And hope of course it wouldn'troll into another vehicle. This recently happened onjuly 25, 2005.

Truck rolled away twice when parked due to emergency brake failure.

I never received any recall notification on nhtsa campaign idnumber 06e026000.the wedge alluded to in nhtsarecall was installed on the truck and did not solve the problem.the emergency brake would still not lock into place, and now did not work at all.

Vehicle rolled with parking brake on, door hit wall and bashed it in, recall that relates.tt

Brake booster installing mechanic did not refill master cylinder reservoir. Consumer went to dealer for recalls 94s91 and 96s35, regarding parking brake and cruise control, consumer states on the way home after repairs the emergency brake warning light illuminated, consumer was able to turn it off by pulling the brake release knob, within a mile it came back on and would not go off without pulling up on the emergency brake pedal, to keep the light off it was necessary to drive with one foot under the emergency brake pedal, later that evening consumer applied to emergency brake and it would not release, consumer found a plastic wedge crosswise in the emergency brake mechanism, next morning consumer found the brake master cylinder was out of fluid and the throttle and cruise control cables were out of their guides, later consumer attempted to set cruise control and it would not work, all these failures occurred only after 20 miles after recall repairs were completed.

Parking wedge was improperly installed.

Emergency brake recall repairs refused due to unavailability of parts (94v-169).

Recall 94v169000/1. Emergency parking brake does not release at the wheels when applied. Dealer contacted and vehicle does not comply to recall. Problem still exists. Provide further information.

On 1-20-04, i started my vehicle to warm up.i had the emergency brake engaged.however, the emergency brake system failed and the vehicle rolled down my driveway, into my neighbors driveway, and hit their trailer and garage, causing damage to their property and my vehicle.after investigating, i have found that there had been a recall on my vehicle for the emergency brakes, for the same problem that caused my vehicle emergency brake system to fail. However i had never received notification of the recall.in fact, as of the date i am filing this complaint, i called ford dealership in owensboro, ky and was told by an employee in the service department that there were not any recalls on ford rangers that they were aware.

Applied the emergency brake and vehicle rolled backwards, vehicle lost control, hitting wire to service pole.tt

When parked and emergency brake applied vehicle will roll in either direction if parked at a slight incline or down grade.consumer is aware there is a campaign 94591 relating to the condition.additional leaves are building up in the heater compartment.

Emergency brake failed. Vehicle was on about a 30-degree hill facing uphill, manual transmission was in neutral with parking brake set. Vehicle driver was not in vehicle when a loud pop was heard and vehicle began rolling downhill. Previous recall of installing a wedge was performed. Wedge still in place.system is unreliable.

94s91 recall for emergency brake parts unavailable since march.tt

Consumer complained of an emergency brake problem. Consumer received recall 94v169001 concerning emergency parkingbrake: mechanical.consumer was never informed of the recall. When consumer stepped on the brake pedal it dropped all the way to the floor, if he repeated this it would eventually catch.parking brake pedal occasionally does not engage.the problem occurs frequently.*tc

The rear brake cable goes though a oblong hole in the frame. In my 1993 ford ranger the oblong hole edge is now razor sharpe. This can cause a fatique crack leading to frame failure. I used rtv to try to keep the cable away from the edge of the hole. The frame hole is now too sharp for me to mess with. I do not want to get cut. About 1995 i called ford and ask about a new cable. I was told no deal.

Transmission jumped out of gear, parking brake failed to hold, resulting in accident, prior to recall.(94v169) *tw

On my 1993 ford ranger,my brake & clutch mounting bracket failed due to stress fracture of welds. This caused lose of brakes and use of clutch. Ford has a recall on failure of studs on the power brake booster that is mounted on this bracket, but nothing on the failure of the bracket.

Was driving around 50 to 55 mph when i seen smoke coming from truckso i pulled over to see what was wrong and seen transmission fluid pouring out of transmission onto exhaust pipethis has happen twice now don,t know why coming from front of transmission auto3.0 engine only wheni kick it in overdrive ithappens.

Who stated that the transmission failure was caused because all of the oil leaked out of the transmission and that ford ranger pickups for particular years had that problem because the transmission plugs were made of plastic and either leaked or fell out.driver had no indication prior to accident that transmission was leaking and never saw any leakage of transmission fluid when the vehicle was parked.the vehicle was operating normally before the accident.

While driving the rear axle at the connection point to the left rear wheel snapped in half and wheel fell off, causing truck to roll over 2 times.

While driving the vehicle the brakes locked up and the vehicle went off the road.

Abs system failure.tt

On two previous occasions the accelerator stuck - mid 1998 - one on a freeway on ramp and the other while acceleration while traveling 65 mph on the freeway.i put the vehicle into neutral and turned off the engine when stopped - it was fine upon being restarted. I took it into a shop but they were unable to find anything apparently wrong.on july 19,1999, while traveling 65 mph on the freeway, i briefly accelerated.the accelerator again stuck. I tapped on the brake to check if that would help. (i was not using cruise control and seldom use it.)the vehicle continued to accelerate.i then put the gear into neutral - it was an automatic.the wheels then froze/locked which caused the truck to skid and then rollover 1 1/2times.i did not apply the brakes however there were skid marks on the roadway.the truck has been well maintained and other than this problem free.

Firestone's tire problem goes far beyond the scope of the current recall.i replaced my 265/75r15 tires 4 years ago because they (all 4) were cracked all along the outside tread, the same area where the treads are seperating on the 235/75r15.my current set is doing the same!les shwab tire company says that the problem with my tires is definately a manufacturing defect.these tires are all manufactured the same, just in different widths.defects that are affecting one size will be affecting the whole tire line.when will the rest of us get our tires replaced?before or after a major accident?( dot number: tire size: 265/75r15 )

On 17 january 2000 at approximately 11:45 pm the outside 2/3's of the tread seperated from the right (passenger) rear tire. The vehicle was brought to a safe stop with only damage being to the right rear mudflap. The next day, 18 january 2000, the vehicle was taken to national tire and battery in zanesville, oh to have the tire replaced. These tires had approximately 26,000 miles on them. Following inspection, i was notified that the left (driver) front tire was showing signs of tread seperation. I was travelling at 50 mph and pulling a 14 ft aluminum boat to our camp. I had just went to the service station and had my oil & filer changed as well as checked the tire pressure on all 4 tires & the spare. Approximately 1 hour later i was traveling at 50 mph on a state highway and the left rear tire blew. It just did not go flat, but blew. I recall that there were no objects on the highway that caused this. The tire was changed and i observed that the tire looked defective. There were no extrernal markings or punctures to indicate a problem. I brought this tire to the firestone dealer in lafayette,la on johnston street and he said i ran over something, which i knew i did not. He thought i hit a curb, which is impossible since there are none on state hwy 82. He then tells me it was probably low pressure, which i then informed him it was just checked prior to starting my trip. He said he was all out of suggestions. I said how about defective? to which he replied, probably not, the tire is less than 1 year old. He and i observed the tire which shows the sidewall physically tore / separated from the tread without any punctures or markings. He refused to replace the tire under warranty. I no longer buy firestone tires and i am now convinced that it was a defective tire.( dot number: tire size: p265r15 )

Vehicle throttle sticking, resulting in high speed.ttthrottle will stick in very cold weather condition causing vehicle to race at 6000 rpm, the only method of control is to shut the engine down thus disabling power steering and brakes, after vehicle has sat for 5 to 10 minutes engine can be restarted.

Gas pedal broke free from fire wall on interstate, lost throttle control.

Engine rpm remains at highway cruising speed after the accelerator is released or the speed control is deactivated.
