Just this past two weeks, we traded trucks.we received a 1992 ford ranger.during the smog test it was discovered that thefuel filler neck was cracked and required replacement.the part cost $241 , labor $175 which was a costly smog check.we have found out that this type of repair is very common in ford rangers, especially the older ones.the ford co. Has now redesigned the part, and there has been no recall or offer of help to the people who have the poorly designed fuel filler neck.you asked how often this occurs - quite often - the two times i was in the office of the repair shop, i encountered 3 other customers that were in there for the same reason !!i would say that is too often.and, i would like to ask the ford co to replace the poorly designed fuel filler necks and pay for the labor involved. Additionally, i think that this information needs to be made known to the public, so that they will not be driving around with a potentially hazardous fuel vapor leak, and that they can get somefinancial help when it is time to smog their truck and this problem is discovered.carolyn neuman

In december 2000, our '92 ranger received a diagnosis that the brake power booster had failed but when the power booster was removed it was discovered that it was full of gasoline due to a fuel pressure regulator failure.in fact, all components connected to a vacuum line now contained gas instead of air.in late february 2001, the ford motor company announced a mandatory recall of their '93 f-series trucks which contained a fuel pressure regulator that could fail, leak fuel and cause a fire.until the recall, not even ford mechanics and online research could explain what happened.now that we know the cause, we still can't get our truck repaired because it is not a '93 f-series. We were told by atchley to contact ford directly and have done just that. Ford refuses to repair our vehicle because there have not been enough reports of our model having this problem.any assistance you may be able to provide would be greatly appreciated.with two working parents and one working vehicle, our lives have been less than stress-free these past months.

Fuel odors are inside and the outside of the vehicle.the dealer inspected vehicle, and determined that fuel line needed to be replaced.the consumer feels that this is a design flaw.the leak is active when stopped, and after stopping, the leak continues until the pressure is relieved on this high pressure fuel injection line.the leaks are located where the power steering hose rubs against the gas lines.*scc

During vehicle collision the shoulder seatbelt broke causing injury to consumer due to fastner failure.*mjs

Frontal collision impact 12:00 position, lost control hit a tree, lap/shoulder failed in rear seats speed 30 mph.tt

Right front upper spring seat bracket (part no. 5a318) has prematurely rusted through allowing body to drop onto front tire.it appears as though a thick plastic coating on the part allowed moisture to be trapped causing premature rusting.upper part of spring seat bracket pushed through fender linerinto engine compartment.in viewing the complaints for this model year truck there appear to be numerous similar events on the apparent defective right front upper spring seat bracket.

During a front impact collision, the seat detached from the frame while an eight (8) year old child weight 80-90 pounds was belted into the seat.this seat failure resulted in multiple facial injuries to the occupant.

Front seats dislodged during a rear end collision, braking seat backs and flinging passengers into rear window, causing injury.

While drivingthe back support on drivers seat gave out, falling backwards.dealer has been contacted. The next month the passengers seat broke in the same location causing the seat back to collapse also.

Both seat latches are broken (driver and passenger) causing seats to fall back.

While driving my 1992 ford ranger xlt pick-up truck the drivers seat mechanism without warning or any action to initiate the failure emitted a noise and suddenly failed.my torso immediately fell backwards as the drivers seat reclined completely.fortunately i was able to control the vehicle and avoid any accident, collision or injury save for a bit of a strain on my abdominal muscles which was not serious.the seat will not return and stay in the upright position nor will it latch down securely (to prevent from sliding forwards and backwards).the failure has rendered the vehicle unusable without repair or replacement of the drivers seat.i am concerned that should the failure have occurred at any other time i might not have been able to control the vehicle and serious injury or damage could have occurred.if this event can happen in other such vehicles owners should be warned to inspect this mechanism for wear or whatever caused it to fail.also i am reluctant to have it repaired by replacing it with a used seat since a used part may be just as unreliable.i understand that new parts are no longer available from ford in order to replace the inoperative drivers seat.

Abs computer failed again after ford dealer replaced original. Upper shock/spring mount completely rusted away causing loss of steering and suspension. Local dealer refused to review for possible manufaturers defects.

Door latch cable failed, causing power lock actuator to malfunction prior to recall (92v-006).

Inside door handle no longer works due to a broken cable linkage during cold weather.ford says my vin is not part of the recall group.other people that have had the recall performed have had the same problem occur again.if my vehicle is not part of the recall group it would mean that it has the updated cable, yet this "updated" cable also has a history of breaking.why not a recall on the updated cable that was supposed to fix the problem and didn't?

The cable broke from the door because it was cold outside. Owner cannot open the door. Dealer replaced cable under recall and ever since then the cable the door has not been working.

I own 92 ford ranger. Last thursday,5/15/2003, while driving to work i noticed my passenger side front lower than the rest of the truck. After i parked at work i investigated and noticed that the shock/spring tower was rusted so bad that it was almost ready to fall off. The spring was bent backwards and the shock was broken at the bottom. At the ford dealer, the mechanic said he had never seen anything like that. He also told me that they only make that part for the right side? the left side looks like brand new. Apparently only the right ( passenger ) side rusts out and not the left. It seems that metal is inferior and can cause a serious accident. Ford must know about this problem because they only make the part for one side and not the other. I can't find any recall info on this. Besides the $800.00 cost to repair, this can cause a serious accident.*nlm

The carriage that holds the spring broke causing frame to lean / tilt. Dealer said the carriage has to be rivited back onto the frame.

The vehicle was discovered in the morning with the front right fender resting almost on the tire. Investigation showed the spring support broken and resting against the aft wheel well. The vehicle has not had front end damage and has been rust proofed numerous times. The support appeares to have corrosion failed. The repairing dealer [ford] had never seen this before.

Consumer stated the front passenger side frame dropped from the vehicle causing damage to the front passenger side shock, the part failed due to excessive rust.

We are an independent repair facility. We have observed this problem on multiple vehicles from 1990 through 1993. No safety defect listed in the summary.

I have a 1992 ford ranger the passenger side spring tower mount is completely rusted and the front shock and spring have dropped making the truck unsafe to drive the brake line was smashed when it gave way.my boyfriend also had a 1992 ford ranger that this happened to causing him to wreck and total the truck so we had to junk it. I wish i would have known it was a common thing for the 1992's only on the passenger side.it must be pretty common as ford has made a replacement part!!!!

Abs computer failed again after ford dealer replaced original. Upper shock/spring mount completely rusted away causing loss of steering and suspension. Local dealer refused to review for possible manufaturers defects.

I was preparing to exit the highway when i heard a loud pop and my truck pulled hard to the right and the front ringht side dropped down. I pulled over as soon as i could and looked under it only to find that the spring saddle had deteriorated away to nothing! it actually fell apart into flakes of metal in my hand! i checked the other side and it was fine. I eased it down the ramp and onto the lot i work at (i work for modot, right next to the ramp)i called to ask the dealer about it and i also called ford. Neither seemed very interested. I have talked to six different mechanics and none of themhave ever seen this part fail unless the vehicle had been wrecked or driven very roughly! my truck looks like new and it has not been damaged like that. I wash it regularly, so rust is not a problem. Only the one part failed, not both or several other parts of the suspension! i explained to the dealer that i had told them it pulled to the right when i had had it in for service before but they couldn't find anything wrong. It is my belief that this part was defective all along and when it disintegrated, i was lucky that noone was hurt or killed when the truck jerked to the right! there's no excuse for a part like this failing under anycircumstances. I have the part and pictures of it. I intend to have it tested in a lab at one of the local colleges. Thank you.

I noticed that my truck was beginning to lead toward the right. After close examination , i discovered that the shock absorber and front suspension spring housing assembly was completely rusted away and the spring itself was bending in a horizontal position. If it had let go completly, it could have taken both my fender and brake line. I have never heard of this part ever rusting away on any car or truck and neither has anyone else i have asked. They don't have a special repair kit for this problem so i believe this is a defect in the steel itself. It is only on the right side and not the left.

Housing for shock and coil spring broken on front passenger side.

Rt front upper spring /shock mount rusted completely through causing suspension collapse and shock failure - at highway speed - rust was hidden by coating on plate - no rust on balance of truck. Rubber bump stop destroyed-not able to be replaced, no longer available from ford

Right front sagged.pulled over saw fluid leaking look in fender well saw spring hanger rusted out and spring push up into inner fender and brake line broke

Vehicle wanders sideways.

Failure of the right suspension, collapsed. Upper spring seat and shock mounting bracket rusted out and broke off. Dealer assessed the failure along with a ford field engineer. Conclusion was that there is no history of this type of failure in ford's records and no recalls. Blamed the failure on accident damage that was evident by new fender on the truck. Dealer was advised that no suspension or frame damage was sustained in the accident and was advised that the repairing shop could be contacted for that assessment. Dealer advised that insurance company should be contacted for possible coverage.

Spring tower deteriorated prematurely and collapsed while driving along highway, causing vehicle to swerve almost losing control. There was no warning of what was happening. I even had the vehicle serviced the day before, and no appearentdefect was detected. When i confroned the service writer at the ford dealership ,he told me this was a common problem for this truck. Further explained that the condensation from the ac drips on this part causing it to rust and fail sooner. He informed me the parts were in stock. The price was about$100. For the part and aprox 200. For labor. He also recomended another shop where i could go and have done a little cheeper.so i checked with them , they also told me this was a common occurance with this type of vehicle. Lately the've done several. I think this needs some investigation. I think i was fortunate not to have crashed. This are a large number of this vehicle on the streets. Something needs to be done. Please feel free to contact me (708) 417-8104 or (708)422-1699 thank you. Ak

Over the course of about two days, i noticed a scraping noise coming from the right front wheel.on the second day, i noticed upon approaching the truck that the right front fender was almost touching the tire.removing the wheel, i discovered that the upper spring seat had deteriorated to the point that the coil spring was thirty degrees from its original position.the sheet metal in the seat crumbled in my hand when i took hold of it, and the housing was torn 75% of the way through from front to back.at high speed, this vehicle would have been a death trap.i note 15 similar complaints in your database.left side spring seat is perfect and intact.

Right front upper spring rusted out and collapsed.body of vehicle rubbing the tire.had a total collapse happened at highway speed, loss of control and brakes would occur according to the repair facility (midas). Left side upper spring seat appears to be in good condition.estimated cost of repairs $225+.

Front coil springs bracket broke after consumer parked the vehicle. Contacted dealer, and the dealerwasaware of problem, but had not remedy.

Shock absorbers were making noise. Consumer checked underneath vehicle and foundright upper spring mount had rusted consumer states they started to bend away from the spring, the shock had broken completely free.

My wife was driving to work when she heard a loud noise in the right front of the truck. The right side of the truck dropped down. On her way home, the brake and abs lights came on. By that time she was home and told me what happened. I checked the master cylinder and it was empty. Looked under the truck and saw the bracket holding the right coil spring had rusted away. The bracket on the left side was ok. Had the vehicle towed to a repair shop. The vehicle is still in the repair shop.

We hadjust departed home and had been on interstate 5 in seattle for a couple of miles when another driver pointed out that we had a problem. We pulled off the freeway shortly and saw that the rear driver's side tire was in bad shape. Apparently, the forward bias of weight made this unnoticeable to us. We had not sensed any impact with a road hazard but had to assume such had occurred. By the time we had stopped the tire was completely unrepairable, but i could not say if it was due to tread separation. The tire was subsequently taken (7/30/99) to a local firestone dealer where a new atx tire was installed. In light of the recent recall this incident took on more significance in our minds and i have taken the precaution of purchasing new tires (non-firestone) for the truck whether or not there is any recall of the size atx tires i had removed. I thought it a good idea to send you this information to add to the research.( dot number: tire size: 21575r15 )

My wife was driving up mt. Lemmon, near tucson, az. The vehicle was not overloaded. She pulled over when she heard a loud noise that was apparently due to the separated tread section (about 1/3 of the entire tread) hitting the inside of the fender well. The tire pressure was checked regularly, including the morning of the failure. The failed tire was purchased on 08/23/96, failed on 06/28/98, had approx. 35,000 miles on it, and was in otherwise perfect condition.i don't have the exact dot# for the failed tire, but i can tell by my receipt that it is on of the following: hyhyr3b485, 276, 246, or 226. The failed tire was replaced at a pro-rated cost based upon tread depth by the place of purchase; the base exchange service station at davis-monthan afb, tucson, az. They were puzzled by the disintegration of a relatively new tire. I was too...( dot number: hyhyr3bxxx tire size: p215/70r14 )

I had 9 flats and 2 sidewall failure within 3,000 miles, i when to the ford dealer and was told i needed to go to firestone dealer, i wanted to get the tires adjusted, because the tires was to prong to punchure (to soft). I got no help from either dealer. I talked to a firestone rep. What a total waste of time. I purchased 4 new cooper tires( dot number: tire size: p215/75r15 )

While making a right turn right tire fell off. Consumer was unable to travel. Dealer has been contacted. Consumer states that while making a right turn, front right tire rolled off and caused the vehicle to hit pole and damaged some part of the vehicle, there was one injury.

The vehicles firestone tire had trade separated and the consumer wants reimbursement for replacing them, tires were not covered by ford's replacement program or any firestone recall. ( tire size p195/70r14)

I was driving from sacramento, ca to fresno, ca.outside of merced, the top layer of my tire peeled off, causing my vehicle to go out of control.the tire flap slapped into the back rear panel of my truck, and damaged the back panel, tail lights, and tailpipe.i believe that accident would have been much worse had i not just been returning from aadvanced driving school for law enforcement officers.we filed an insurance claim and tried to get the insurance company to subrogate the claim to firestone, but firestone said that their tire was not defective.we had a mechanic look at the truck just two days prior to the accident.he told me that he thought the tire might be defective and that i might want to get it looked at.unfortunately, i didn't have time to check it out before the accident.( dot number: tire size: fr480 )

Consumer was inspectingtires and noticed thatdriver's side rear tire tread had began to separate oninner sidewall oftires.dunlap tire, there were no injuries.

In july of 2001, we were given a 92 ford ranger, to give to our oldest son when he got older, by my mother in-law (who was his w hole world) that passed away at the end of that month.we decided to move to idaho in august, so we went to uhaul to get a trailer to haul our stuff.uhaul attached a 6'x12' trailer to the truck and said our truck would be able to pull it from vancouver, washington to boise, idaho with no problem.we left for idaho august 17, 2001.we took i-84 east and broke down just before dead mans pass on the hills just east of pendleton, oregon.uhaul towed it to boise and we had to call republic western insurance inc. Who represents uhaul.we tried desperately to work with our adjuster, brian vannen, and the vice president of the company, tom latush.we asked to have our truck fixed by al's car care in boise.at first they towed it there.however, when al's car care mechanics said that it needed a new engine and transmission, and possible a new radiator, as a result of the trailer it was pulling, they sent the truck to homedale auto salvage in homedale, idaho with out our permission on august 28th.then they told us they would not move it somewhere else despite our rejection to the shop it was at and they were going to put a engine and transmission in the truck that had 14,000 miles on it, the truck would only take 7-10 days to fix, and it would have a 1 year warranty.three weeks later, september 18th, they said it was done, and we could get it back.when we arrived at the shop to pick it up, we discovered that they lied to us andthe engine and transmission has at least 67,000 and the name on the receipt said jerry's auto clinic in caldwell, idaho.both the shop and the insurance company were rude to us, lied to us, and gave us death threats.we called the insurance company immediately and told him that we did not trust the work that was done because it was not running right.we also told him we were heading back to portland, oreg

Oil pressure gauge stopped reading pressure.rattling heard in valves.engine quit.everything shut down.

The paint on the hood and roof of the truck is peeling.the dealer called it paint delamination and admitted it as a factory defect.however since my 3yr/30000mi warranty was expired there was noting they could do.i persuded the issue with another dealer and got the same story.i called the factory consumer service line and they refered me to the reagional manager for the northwest.he never returned any of my attempts to contact him.i returned to my orignal dealer, got the same story, but when they looked up the vin# for my truck they had it registered to someone else and told me since i was not the original owner, there was nothing they could do for me.i argued the fact that i was the orignial owner and could prove it.they told me that would not make any difference.i left the issue allone for the past 3 years until i read an artical in the oct 1999 issue of consumer reports.so i decided i would pick up the fight again.thanks for listening.

When vehicle started in neutral, it was put in reverse and throttle went to floor without anyone touching it, vehicle took off in reverse , front wheel hit building bending axle and other components this happened about 30 days prior without any damage.

In two occurrences whilecruise control was activated and tapped on brake pedal, vehicle kept accelerating at a higher speed, which mayhave caused an accident. Cruise control problems occur when both the abs and parking light illuminate.dealer could not determine the problem. *ml

When releasing gas pedal, engine does not slow down, continues to run fast, causing lurching and jerking; caused an accident, vehicle hit post.vehicle has been in for service approximately 20 times and problem still exists.turn signals cancel pretmaturely, if the steering wheel is turned a few degrees when the signals are activated, the signals cancel.

The consumer was pulling out of a driveway when all of a sudden he experienced sudden acceleration, and crashed into two other vehicles and a brick wall. *sc

My 1992 ford ranger spontaneously combusted on the morning of june 6, 2006.the cruise control went out unexpectedly and wouldn't start.i left it overnight and received a phone call from the police at 5 a.m in the morning saying my truck was on fire.apparently it had caught fire (while it was off) and completely totaled the entire vehicle, leaving me at a complete loss (insurance did not cover this type of claim).being a 19 year old in college this came as a complete nightmare financially.ford has refused to do anything about it.i will never drive a ford again.vehicle was towed to a nearby junkyard, where the brand new 1,000 clutch and new tires were removed and sold for someone else's profit.i got nothing.

Vehicle failed to decelerate when cruise control was engaged, driver depressed the brake pedal instead the vehicle accelerated.

Consumer started the automobile and immediately it took off, going through his yard and then into his neighbor's yard. Vehicle finally came to a stop when it hit a pole. No injuries. The steering wheel was in a locked position all of the time.

Truck was warming up with me in it around january. I went to open the door from the inside, their was no response and was stuck in truck. Eventually, i was able to get out of the rear sliding window. I was and am never able to use my passenger door again, from the inside or outside.

Windshield leaks & frame rusting. Suspension bowed main structor arms. Engine passing oil from day one of ownership.interior door plastic frame cracking. Dimmer and turn signal switch shorts.

Transmission manual failed output shaft at 20 mph replaced internal gears gave out at 65 mph.//abs brakes became spongy & lock in rear pull to right in front .//headlights began blinking off &on after 15 minutes of driving.//transfer case split while in 2 wheel drive at 35 mph.//front suspension giving out can't align front end ,eratic steering & worn tires.//rear springs slipped out on left side axle slid forward to body.//heater began rattliing ,more as you turn fan up.

Consumers dash area burned down overnight. The stereo and heater compartment area also melted. The vehicle was parked and in the off position.

There is a defect in the side mirrors of the '92 ranger.they lose their ability to maintain position after approximately 2 years of use.i've gone through two sets of mirrors (both sides).my side mirrors "collapse" when i drive over 45 mph resulting in a very dangerous situation-i have no rear visibility to the sides.i have difficulty changing lanes.i've spoken to the local ford service department and was told that this is a common problem and my best option would be to buy aftermarket mirrors (not ford/motorcraft), unfortunately i have not been able to find compatible aftermarket mirrors. This has been a nagging problem for me as it appears it has been for others.

Mirrors flop over due to wind / slipstream; bad design; many close calls changing lanes on freeway; cannot find a better substitute that will fit this model.

Consumer states while driving on highway, and tried to change lanes she has to roll down her window to hold the driver's side mirror in place, because the mirrors would blow against the windows causing her to not be able to see, all the consumer can see is the pavement outside of the driver's side door, consumer has tried to find some type of screws to tighten the mirrors but there are no type of screws on the ball and socket mirrors, passenger and driver's side mirror are extremly loose and consumer has been forced to order another set of mirrors from manufacturer.

Driver and passenger exterior rearview mirrors flops loose at speeds over 40 mph; no way to adjust; difficult for driver to check oncoming rear/side traffic.

Rear view mirrors blow in towards windows.

Rear view mirrors flap into windows when going over 50 mph or over, no visibility, replaced several times.

Rear view mirrors continually fall down in adjustment while driving, can not be tightened properly, visibility problems. Mjs

Exterior mirrors are folding against the vehicle ,and there is no way to deal with this problem besides replacing the mirrors.

Read brake drums have warped 3 or 4 times each side, makes brake pedal pulsate.turned by dealer once and possibly replaced once, constant problem.have smelled melting wire insulation several times. Outside mirrors fold back over 55 mph. Replaced once, still problem. Gas tank drips gas, plastic tank in contact with metal crossbar. Appears to be original installation problem. Need warranty fix on this.

While driving at highway speeds side exterior mirrors fold in.owner bought replacement mirrors, but these had the same problem.dealer has been contacted. *ml

At 55 mph and above outside door mirror folds in towards the inside of vehicledue to the installment of the bug/hood deflector/passenger's side door outside mirror was not affected.

While goingat a high rate of speed would not be a able to seea large vehicle coming from the other direction. Due to both side view mirrorsflapping inward.

Left side view mirror collapses when vehicle is driven over 50 mph due to high winds.

Exterior rearview mirrors loose/flop in the wind, causing poor visibility. *sd

While driving about 40 mph the rearview mirrors flopped down because of the wind. Problem not corrected.

Right hand exterior mirror moves out of position.

Outside rearview mirror will not holdits position, keeps moving, and causing poor visibility.

While driving 35 mph and without warning, exterior mirrors will fold in, consumer would be unable to view or use the mirrors.

The right front wheel separated from the vehicle.

The passenger side wheel was rusted.

The wheel hub broke, causing the wheel bearing to be chewed up and pushes the brake pad away, causing grinding.
